When your IDE is in dark mode but every webpage you visit has a white background... And alt-tabbing makes your eyes bleed.23
My girlfriend is learning python and she figured out how to change her environment to dark mode. I'm so proud of her.13
This is kind of a horror story, with a happing ending. It contains a lot of gore images, and some porn. Very long story.
TL;DR Network upgrade
Once upon a time, there were two companies HA and HP, both owned by HC. Many years went by and the two companies worked along side each one another, but sometimes there were trouble, because they weren't sure who was supposed to bill the client for projects HA and HP had worked on together.
At HA there was an IT guy, an imbecile of such. He's very slow at doing his job, doesn't exactly understand what he's doing, nor security principles.
The IT guy at HA also did some IT work for HP from time to time when needed. But he was not in charge of the infrastructure for HP, that was the jobb for one developer who didn't really know what he was doing either.
Whenever a new server was set up at HP, the developer tried many solutions, until he landed on one, but he never removed the other tested solutions, and the config is scattered all around. And no documentation!!
Same goes with network, when something new was added, the old was never removed or reconfigured to something else.
One dark winter, a knight arrived at HP. He had many skills. Networking, server management, development, design and generally a fucking awesome viking.
This genius would often try to cleanse the network and servers, and begged his boss to let him buy new equipment to replace the old, to no prevail.
Whenever he would look in the server room, he would get shivers down his back.
One and a half year later, the powerful owners in HA, HP and HC decided it was finally time to merge HA and HP together to HS. The knight thought this was his moment, he should ask CEO if he could be in charge of migrating the network, and do a complete overhault so they could get 1Gb interwebz speeds.
The knight had to come up with a plan and some price estimates, as the IT guy also would do this.
The IT guy proposed his solution, a Sonicwall gateway to 22 000 NOK, and using a 3rd party company to manage it for 3000 NOK/month.
"This is absurd", said the knight to the CEO and CXO, "I can come up with a better solution that is a complete upgrade. And it will be super easy to manage."
The CEO and CXO gave the knight a thumbs up. The race was on. We're moving in 2 months, I got to have the equipment by then, so I need a plan by the end of the week.
He roamed the wide internet, looked at many solutions, and ended up with going for Ubiquiti's Unifi series. Cheap, reliable and pretty nice to look at.
The CXO had mentioned the WiFi at HA was pretty bad, as there was WLAN for each meeting room, and one for the desks, so the phone would constantly jump between networks.
So the knight ended up with this solution:
2x Unifi Securtiy Gateway Pro 4
2x Unifi 48port
1x Unifi 10G 16port
5x Unifi AP-AC-Lite
12x pairs of 10G unifi fibre modules
All with a price tag around the one Sonicwall for 22 000 NOK, not including patch cables, POE injectors and fibre cables.
The knight presented this to the CXO, whom is not very fond of the IT guy, and the CXO thought this was a great solution.
But the IT guy had to have a say at this too, so he was sent the solution and had 2 weeks to dispute the soltion.
Time went by, CXO started to get tired of the waiting, so he called in a meeting with the knight and the IT guy, this was the IT guys chance to dispute the solution.
All he had to say was he was familiar with the Sonicwall solution, and having a 3rd party company managing it is great.
He was given another 2 weeks to dispute the solution, yet nothing happened.
The CXO gave the thumbs up, and the knight orders the equipment.
At this time, the knight asks the IT guy for access to the server room at HA, and a key (which would take 2 months to get sorted, because IT guys is a slow imbecile)
The horrors, Oh the horrors, the knight had never seen anything like this before.
What are all these for, why is there a fan ductaped to on of the servers.
WHAT IS THIS!
Why are there cables tied in a knot.
These are questions we never will know the answers too.
The knight needs access to the servers, and sonicwall to see how this is configured.
After 1.5 month he gains access to the sonicwall and one of the xserve.
What the knight discovers baffles him.
All ports are open, sonicwall is basically in bridge mode and handing out public IPs to every device connected to it.
No VLANs, everything, just open...12
Guys google have made a revolutionary discovery, it's going to change smartphones for the better!!!!
(Yes must clarify this is immense amounts of sarcasm because fucking hell google you would think you have all this money that you could work this fucking shit out...)15
TL;DR: If you're an Android user, do yourself a favour and check out https://simplemobiletools.com/ . You're welcome.
Dear diary, today was a good day.
A small part of my faith in humanity was recovered after I found about Tibor Kaputa.
Apparently, this guy - like many of us - was fed up with the bloat, bugs, bullshit and 'features' of many of the stock Android apps that come preinstalled on most phones. And so, he decided to make his own.
Unlike most of us however, he actually pulled through. And then he made them open source.
No bullshit permission requirements.
No ads or tracking.
And no, not just 'toggle white/dark mode', I'm talking 'pick your own color scheme', both within the app and for the app icon (!).
And then sync your colour scheme across the entire suite of apps (!!).
Simple UI, with a lot of customizable settings.
And if you get them from f-droid, it's all completely free as in BEER too!
I've spent a lot of time in the last year trying to find software that does what it's supposed to do well, without trying to pull any sneaky bullshit in the background or annoy me with crap that I don't care about in a miserable attempt to show off its useless features.
I'm not a fan of Medium myself either, but the author's article about how his suite of apps was born really resonated with me. If you care about privacy, open source software, and doing things right, you should really give it a read: https://medium.com/@tibbi/...
I'm particularly a fan of the Gallery, the File Manager, and the Music player apps, and the others don't look half bad either.14
That moment when you go blind because you have been coding in Dark Mode for hours and you just switched to something white!3
I've been on dark devrant since it was released and today I was wondering what the light mode looked like again..
*switches to light*
After my eyes burned away I remembered why I use dark mode in the first place and switched back 😂10
Google just annouced Dark Mode in Android Q.
Well it took you 6 years of fucking telling you but hey you added it finally.18
Good news: my department is great and furnishes the developers with a special dark space to work with big monitors in a small, quiet room.
Bad news: someone from sales is camped out in here and the glare from the all-white word documents they have open is causing my oh-so-perfect screen (in dark mode, of course) to be unreadable.
As an added perk, they brought in a laptop and are using that almost exclusively. There are dedicated laptop chairs away from my workstation they could use instead.
Also, the entire room smells like their body spray. My only salvation is that it's almost five and maybe they'll leave soon.3
So, taking an entry course for Java.
Also, you people have corrupted me... Now I have switched everything to dark-themes.12
Apple you drove of delusional suckers! When will your retarded fashion devices finally support WEBP?!
A gallery page with images, and thanks to WEBP, it's 408 kB. Because Google made WEBP and handed out a well documented CLI FOSS compression tool that even can convert the source PNGs to lossy WEBP with bloody transparency. Well done, Google!
Except that Apple's shitty management can't take it that Google actually made something nice, so no WEBP. Instead, JPEG-2000 that enjoys nearly no fucking tool support. The free tools that even can deal with that mostly don't support transparency, and the encoder sucks donkeys so that JPEG still fucks JPEG-2000 big time.
So it's JPEG with matching background for iOS. Fine, but since JPEG's blocky artifacts are much more visible, the compression can't be that high, and it's 769 kB. That's 88% more image data for Shittari than for non-retarded browsers and even Edge! EDGE!!
Oh and if the user changes light/dark system mode according to surrounding light conditions, guess what happens? Yep, since JPEG doesn't support transparency, now it's different JPEGs with dark background via the media query in the "picture" element, and it's another 754 kB download. Bloody 1523 kB instead of 408 kB, that's a factor of 3.7!
Fuck your ass Crapple, with an electric eel!19
Excited for the following upcoming product releases:
Dark Mode GitHub
Dark Mode Jira
Dark Mode Kubernetes
Dark Mode Kafka Streams
Dark Mode WebEx13
I'm the worst with color combinations and I want to enable dark mode on the privacy/security blog!
What color combinations (if you have hex codes or something, please share!) would you think would suit the blog?
Why does Google not have a dark mode for their freaking home page? I have dark mode on everything on my computer then I go to look something up on Google and get blinded. If they can do it for YouTube why don't they get it together on their nearly blank, bright white search page. You're better than this Google. And while I'm on that topic same to you stackoverflow. When I'm copying someone else's code at least let me do it in dark mode.11
I've been using dark mode on google docs mobile (changing the page color to black and text to grey) for two months now that going back to default looks weird.
I was starting a new manuscript and could hardly work on it because of how weird it looks. I guess I shouldn't have done that in the first place, because now I can't get used to the default anymore.1
Devs: "Accessibility? Not a high priority for now"
Also Devs (in tech conferences): "I can't read, can you please increase the font size?"
"Also, dark mode everywhere please"4

Therefore a feedback is my term of use.
Please post it as a comment (or in the google group).7
When I opened my textbook today it took my brain a second to figure out why it isn't in dark mode.1
I finaly managed to make a dark mode on slack desktop app! Still has some bugs (like scrollbar being white) but works well enough for me. If anyone is interested tell me in the comments 🙂
How i did it (Linux paths but should be the same process for Windows):
You can execute scripts in /usr/lib/slack/resources/app.asar.unpacked/src/static/index.js
Using that i figgured out that slack desktop is basically an actual webview to their website and some os hooks.
Then i just simply packaged up some custom css to be loaded with JS.
Quite simple actually.
Using this method you can create all kinds of plugins for slack, so go wild!3
Just started using Firefox nightly. It has an add on called "super dark mode" that automatically converts ANY site you visit to a dark theme.
#How the fuck did I use Chrome till now.4
Decided to delete devRant and reddit for a few months. Now I'm back, and the first thing that greets me on both is Light Mode 🤢
Thank God that I haven't cancelled my devRant subscription. Once you go black you never go back! 😏5
Been a Windows user since I was a kid in 2005. Switched to MacOS in 2018 due to the nature of my job. Today I went back to use my brother's Windows machine to play some games 😎
Damn! The recent updates made Windows look so good and snappy. The dark mode looks well and the navbar on the Windows App Store is translucent.8
The newest version of MacOS has a new feature: dark mode.
Um, do you really need to update the entire OS to change the color of the UI? Why is that news?5
Pixel 4 has had to restrict brightness and refresh rate to make up for the smaller battery capacity compared to pixel 3.
So you get a phone advertised as 90hz refresh rate, but does 60 most of the time and only hits 90 when the screen is at a specific brightness.
The max brightness had to be capped at about half of what a similar Samsung can do. Deep inside the kernel there is a disabled high brightness mode, meaning without root access and some hacks, you can’t even get the phone it hit its physical maximum. Leading users to complain about the phone screen being too dark.
What a heap of utter shit.
Been trying to tackle this issue for weeks, I was under the impression that a crash happened bc a "white screen" kept getting mentioned, but there's no crash report even remotely related to the reported issue,
When I finally found it,
Lo and behold, the calendar has no numbers on it,
Apparently the issue is only happening when the phone is on dark mode,
It just so happens that I started to use dark mode like 2 days ago,
Debugging does works in mysterious ways,
Finally fixing it feels like reaching that itchy spot in your ears with q-tip and scraped out a giant pile of ear wax, fucking disgusting, but satisfying at the same time,5
I think I might change my middle name to "I told you so"
Couple of weeks ago I proposed integrating a daily process job into an existing WPF application (details of what+why would be too long to explain) and the manager suggested I make the changes
Me: "I can do it, but Jay has the most experience with that application. I don't have his WPF skills"
Mgr: "How hard can WPF be? If it uses the MVVM pattern, it should be a snap."
Me: "Its nearly an 8 year old WPF project with several chefs in that kitchen. I pretty sure I could figure it out, but that is a difference between 2 weeks and 2 days. Integration is pretty straight forward, Jay could probably do it in a day."
DevA: "WPF is easy. MVVM makes it even easier. I worked on the shipping app."
Me: "That's was a brand new, single page app, but yea, it should be easy."
DevB: "WPF has been around a long time and the tools have really matured. I don't understand what is so difficult."
Me: "I didn't say anything would be difficult, I know with that application, there is going to be complexity we need to figure out."
DevB: "It uses the MVVM, so all we need is the user control, a view model, controller, and its done."
DevA: "Sounds easy to me."
Mgr: "If you need more time to work on the vendor project, I'll have DevB work on the integration."
Me: "How is the integration going?"
DevB: "This app is a mess. I have no idea how they got the control collections to work. If I hard-code everything, I can get it to work. This dynamic stuff is so confusing. Then there is the styling. Its uses dark mode, but no matter what I do, my controls show up in light mode."
Me: "The app uses Prism, so the control configuration is in, or around, the startup code."
DevB: "That makes sense. Will it fix the styling too?"
Me: "I have no idea. When I looked at it, some controls loaded the styles from the main resource, other's have it hard-coded. Different chefs in the kitchen, I guess. How far have you got?"
DevB: "I've created invoice button. That is as far as I got"
Me: "I'm finished with the vendor project and I'll be wrapping up the documentation today. I can try to help next week."
DevB: "Thanks. I think we might have to get Jay to help if we can't figure this out."
Me: "Good idea"
Two weeks and only a button. A button? I miss Delphi.3
I think that Google has alien employee's.
NOW Why Do I Say that???
Because all the stock Android versions do not have a "DARK MODE".
If they were human developer's they would have included it.
Same statement is Worthy to all their apps.
Light is killing me !!!2
Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.
For all the hate against windows I built over the now 8 years using linux as my main os. Now I feel windows 10 is quite good.
I got a little beefier desktop lately, been using just laptops from the last 8 years(8D) so I got this urge to get a desktop for gaming, I bought an entry level machine. ryzen 5 2400g, put my lovely linux mint and... the fucking machine was hanging up when the load was too high, and the load was too high too often because react/node etc.
I gave up in less than a day, I just did a quick search and some people said about secure boot or whatnot, some other claimed that ryzen cpus had no problem with mint, I got fed up quickly and did not try any solution with linux. Then I installed windows 10, installed the godamned drivers from the provided dvd ... since then it was a breeze.
The dark mode is gorgeous and no hanging up at all... I'm just sad that mint did not worked soo well. I wanted to have consistency between my laptop/desktop and I loved mint above everything. But well, some things improve while you're not looking at them, win 10 is quite good, I'll keep my desktop as gaming/programming pc with win 10, and well, the laptop will be auxiliar programming machine.
I used to prefer light mode, but switched to dark one day just for the heck of it and now light burns my eyes and makes me cringe7
Sometimes I ask myself why dark theme isn’t the default setting on apps. I mean, light theme WRECKS YOUR EYES!!! How can the common way of designing is to make light theme default or JUST NOT HAVE A DARK THEME!!!!! It’s so unnatural!!!! Anyway...10
Thought the day would never come but... I'm starting to hate android as an operating system...
It's just becoming so inconsistent and fragmented, it's almost at windows level of inconsistent.
Now either google should start regulating the app store and android itself or completely ditch android as a complete stand alone OS.
I would personally seperate android into a runtime and focus on fuschia by building the android runtime into it, that way it could pull system UI element design and such rather than have the user build apps that look completely out of place and don't follow rules like dark mode, theming and the such...
I'm not going to jump ship into iOS because fuck iOS but just really hope google really starting tightening android up else I feel like it's just going to starting breaking more and more into a steaming mess.5
I think I have never seen a splash screen that changed background color based on in-app dark mode setting, of course it is nice to get flashbanged, but it'd be nice not to either.3
With all of them going gaga about Dark Mode everywhere, is there anyone else at all who thinks light mode is so much more easy on the eyes during the day alone at least?36
The Play Store just added even more white to it's design with the latest update.
Once again Google is going the wrong way with their design choices....
Can we please just have a dark mode.1
Slack's latest update just broke the darkify hack. It's 2019, right? It is unbelievable that there is no built-in dark mode for Linux, Mac, or even windows. I mean, they are aware of dark mode. It is available on mobile without trouble. Get it together, slack!12
It was on this day, we give thanks to our lord and saviour Apple, for enabling dark themes for all!!!5
I was trying to watch an instructional YouTube Python video (on my Android phone) while it was dark in my bedroom, and then I remembered that Youtube for Android doesn't have a damn dark mode... NOOOOOOOO!!! :( :(
Why did you do this to us Google!5
MacOS got a dark mode.
Which means iOS is probably getting a dark mode next year.
Which mean Google will probably make an Android dark mode in 2 years.
So for the past few days I decided to create my own personal blog because I wanted to start blogging again. Anyways, I setup a basic WP website (sorry wp haters xD) and installed a pretty cool free theme that I tweaked all over the place.
I was thinking of cool things to add while I'm just in that setting up phase and I really admired that whole dark/light mode toggling feature :) so I spent the past day or so creating my own and it works finally, even across different pages! So i thought I'd share. (Please excuse the BS posts, its strictly for testing. Havent actually started writing posts yet xD)
Heres also a link to this terrible js file I wrote that controls the logic lol (I'll have to refactor quite a bit but it works)
Any feedback is appreciated as I'm still just developing it :)14
@Apple: I would just about kill for you to come out with dark mode for default OS X apps: safari, messaging, etc.
PS. Please don't drop the Mac Pro line.
PPS. If you do, please open OS X up to install on any machine 😘1
I think dark mode is the best thing ever invented and glad devRant has it, otherwise I would have been blinded by my bright white screen.
*Awkwardly starts playing Blinded by the Light song*8
I am fairly convinced coding in a non dark mode editor will slowly ruin your code due to excessive exposure2
Dark mode on MacOS Mojave is a great addition, but why is it that we have dynamic wallpaper based on time of day and yet there isn't a way to switch between light and dark mode the same way?4
How to enable dark mode for every application in windows?
Basically just inverts color but it's good enough for some text editor or reading fully white background excel, word or PDF which sometimes hurt my eyes at night especially...
Just don't use it for any movies please :D6
Safari is such an underrated browser.
It's damn beautiful with the new Mojave dark mode and the developer tools are excellent.
The performance is identical to Chrome and the memory consumption is much smaller.
I seriously encourage everyone on macOS to give it a try.
P.S: This is coming from a person who has been using Chrome since its release.43
Just when I thought Microsoft is going in the right direction with the launch of dark Surface products and dark mode for Windows, they took all my hopes away with their shitty Windows Update thing. Completed download and rebooted to find out that the update has vanished. Great, thanks for wasting my data, Windows. :3
Light theme + inverted colors = devRant supporter dark theme. Also, when you browse through Android in this mode, you can get some design inspiration.8
What's your favorite vscode theme ?
Personally i use one dark pro and i am looking for a new one maybe.
When I was younger I went to computer camps. We would basically play LAN games the majority of the time.
One year we played Jedi Knight Dark Forces II.
This game was super easy to hack since you would just save a local version of the file and it would override the game.
There was a god mode that you can download which would give your character 1 million in health and never die.
I then modified it so I had a health of 500. This way if I wanted to prove that I could be killed I would just call the kill command 4 times to bring my life back down to 100.
Music, but if it has words they need to be foreign. J-rock, deadmau5, gogo penguin, carrion... All are good.
Dark themes everywhere unless it's java, because it helps me compartmentalise my languages.
Second screen hooked up with the stuff I want to be viewable all the time, as it doesn't change when I switch workspaces. (bug or a feauture?)
Door shut to muffle sounds from the rest of the house, window slightly open so I don't suffocate.
Pomodoro timer on, but put phone into silent mode so no notifications disrupt my focus.
Drinks and bathroom breaks happen in the 5 minutes between pomodoro sprints. Food happens in the 15 minute breaks.
Extra RAM stick is in the mail so I lose less time waiting for android studio to exhale or whatever it's doing as it holds up the whole computer.
I might just do the java parts of my project in bluej if this ram stick doesn't alleviate my problems. I could go outside and drink mud through a metre long straw with a filter on the end sooner than android studio gets unstuck.
If anyone can add more sensible ideas I'd be happy :)1
This extension is awesome. You can have dark theme on every website. Although sometimes it fucks up the website layout a bit.
God bless that person who created dark mode for Chrome. Maybe Goo can learn from MS and give a optional dark mode to everything they build.
Why don't all websites have a toggle for dark / fuckall mode ? How else are devs supposed read all the shit they post ?2
Can I please have Mojave now?
I want all of the cool new features(Read: I just want systemwide dark mode now please.)
Then I can drop £250 on a Space grey mouse and keyboard, to complete the set.4
Are we at the point where the MVP of every dev app (at the very least) should have a dark mode?!
I have seen app reviews that literally said: "Great app! Love it! Giving a 4 because it doesn't have dark mode!"
Hey @dfox , after using this awesome app for some time now I thought about Posting some feedback about some stuff which may can be improved in future releases:
Maybe it would make sense to seperate the notifications in two areas: one area for your received likes and one area for comments made on your posts or posts you comments on. I often find myself not seeing when someone commented on a post because of the many like notifications.
Speaking about the likes I sometimes click on the Username to see who liked a post. If you don't hit the username you are taken to the post instead of the profile. Maybe it would make sense to make the username a little bit bigger or give it some button like layout to make it easier to click, because I often find myself not hitting the username correctly.
Dark Mode is a great Feature, but it would be even better if you could choose when to use darkmode and when to use lightmode based on time maybe, so that those two themes automatically switch.
These are just my 2 cents, which in my opinion would make the app even better than it is and which you may consider in some future releases.
All in all I really like this app and the Community is great, so thanks for creating it. :)4
Youtube: Here's a new dark mode! Oh and it's not complete so we're reverting to GLARING white and old UI when you upload stuff.
I mostly can’t see properly on dark themes. Thank you light themes for existing. I use slightly dark themes for IDEs though (One Dark)4
Every time I use an application that has both light and dark mode, I always use dark, and when I decide "Hey, I want to try light again" I immediately regret ever clicking the option.4
Anyway Github has launched its app.
Positioning as a social network and trend aggregator is becoming increasingly clear.
It doesn't make much difference to me, I almost always prefer the web version and Github's works well.
But do you know what we really need?
- Native dark mode3
Time for a 00:30 rant that has no structure!
(There is a theme tho)
TI-BASIC optimization (framecount is from TI-84 Silver, with the higher Z80 clock):
"0→S": 3 frames
"DelVar S": 2 frames
(Variable "Ans" holds the last answer given to the normal calc functions. This makes it blazing fast to use [for some reason])
also refreshing the real TI-8x line's LCD at its actual, normal rate is bad and *SOMEHOW* ends in LCD overvolting (makes parts of the LCD blue instead of dark gray) after ~15 frames. The TI-8x line's normal OS thing refreshes the LCD at 30-45FPS depending on their clock speed, the LCD is native 80FPS. Just figured i should point this out. (Yes, TI, you do make hardware, it's just that sometimes you should make it when SANE)
why the fuck did they make a multitasking machine that runs on a Z80 at, like, 7/8 the original Gameboy's speed (the B/W DMG, the original. The CGB had DoubleSpeed mode.)1
Why Google, maybe you should have another think about Android night mode. I like the feature but for real! Dimming my display at 15.24, that's 03.24 PM for you non military time guys. I am not about to go to sleep soon! True, the sun is down and it's dark but still! This must even more silly closer to the polar circle where the sun does not rise at all.11
Just in case anyone didn't know this, there is a dark mode for the web version of devrant. Just click the 3 dots on the top right and click settings. Just watching out of those of you who didn't know 😉1
It takes a fair bit for me to enjoy an online course, let alone want to recommend it.
if anyone is looking at using their "free" time learning something new during these troubling times, i would go look at the Packt Courses.
@whocares suckered me in the other day, and i have to admit, i dont regret it.
So with that i would actually say to anyone wanting to get into:
- Data Science
then checkout these workshops.
you can actually enroll into all of them using the free coupon, so theres that ☺
one down side is the lack of dark mode, but im sure we all have browser extensions for that.3
Dynamic wallpaper seems to only work in light mode for the OS. The dark mode version just shows the night picture the whole time... #fail #imcryingrightnow #ios6
@dfox. On dark mode when scrolling on dark theme the dividers flicker.
Anyone else who experienced this??
P.S on iPhone XR.10
I just found out VSTS has dark mode option. Thank you, MSFT, for caring about all the dark souls out there.
They have added dark mode in windows/ Azure/ edge/documentation pages/ Visual Studio/VS Code. _/\_3
So macos Mojave is out and it's super smooth!
Finally high Sierra's bugs have been ironed out.
Also System-wide dark mode!1
Anyone knows a good way to enable dark mode for any website? I used to use the Stylish plugin for firefox to get dark themes on sites I am visiting frequently such as github, gitlab etc however most of these themes broke pretty often.
Are there other ways to dark theme websites, in a way that is more reliable and doesn't break on every second website visit? ._.4
Just updated macos to Mojave and I'm not liking the look so far.
The menubar text fades too much on inactive monitors. Inactive text in other apps fades far too much. The dark mode is too dark.
Guess I'll get used to it. Eventually1
I ranted about my new laptop and linux mint on it https://devrant.com/rants/1919501 and I said there will be a rant about the OSs I tried
So my new laptop is the Xiaomi notebook pro, with the highest config: i7/16g/256g/mx150 gpu/alu body/10h battery/perfect keyboard/great screen. Its Chinese, but Xiaomi... you kinda expect flaws, problems, but i watched all the reviews and knew about all the things, and the price was 35% down (836 + taxes = 997EUR) for a macbook pro clone? its a no brainer.. but i had a rattling vent (fixed with shoe glue lol) now its just loud in windows but not in linux, strange
I changed the Chinese windows on it to EN... worked perfect... but... It has 2 slots for NVMe ssd so i bought a 500gb one for the second slot, I put windows on that (because games, occasional insta story video edit, big files, anyway...) and put Ubuntu on the 256gb original ssd.. (to develop on that) and it was slow as fuck, I got errors all over the places, problems I never had before with ubuntu.. and mind you Windows had over 3000 MB/s for read and almost 2000 MB/s for write speeds on that disk... I was disappointed af. MIND YOU all my life I had Ubuntu on secondary old/slow laptops/pcs working JUST FINE... I still don't know what the fuck happened.. the ui was choppy to say the least and I just was not ready to accept that on this HW while windows worked like a charm (yuck)
Then I went with Manjaro (based on arch, here on devrant people like that stuff, must be great)... well after I installed it, it booted up to the login page and black screen... something with the MX150 GPU according to the interwebs... by this time I was so frustrated and in time stress because of my flight home for xmas that I decided not to fix Manjaro but to go with another flavour
Linux Mint it is... everything kinda works out of the box, like they say... it has dark mode everywhere in the settings without downloading some bloated theme or plugin like on other flavours. So I sticked with Linux Mint. Im not saying its perfect, but I have it for like a month now and all its flaws are these small irrelevant settings not working, utilities like the battery showing funny numbers in the post I linked in the beginning.
Other than this I want to ask you guys. In all 3 distros I tried, they all had text scaling issues everywhere (os, apps, web). I think I have a regular fullHD display, its sharp, but I mean... I never expected resolution or scaling issues or things like that. On Windows I never had those scaling issues... other than the famous win10 "blurry apps"3
I've finally been so agitated at G+ I need somewhere to just vent.
So for context. What I'm talking about is Google+, or more specifically, the Android app. The website is bad in its own way, but that's not here nor there. No opinions on the iOS version, as I simply REFUSE to touch iOS.
So anyways. The platform itself honestly is not bad. With competent developers behind it, and them actually listening to their dwindling fucking userbase, they could easily turn it into something successful, but the issue is that they just aren't
You see, it's almost like they change dev staff every 6 or so months. Why do I believe this? Because the GUI changes about that fucking often. They also have a history of forcing updates, but allowing you to use an older version, just horrifically slapping on a new and unwelcome skin. This isn't an isolated practice by any means, but it's by far the most prevalent here.
So, now a list of some of the issues the current version has:
-After about a week, the app becomes unstably slow, to the point of it taking about a minute to refresh your home feed, or an individual page.
-Searching is never good, always being slow and rarely giving you who you asked for.
-Transparency is non fucking existent. There isn't a development roadmap to speak of, and when something happens we get it second hand from staff in a "G+ help" community.
There is a solution for the first one, going and clearing the data/cache, but really, the end user shouldn't have to regularly do that. Not to mention the storage space Google apps IN GENERAL fucking take up. Why does Google Play Services regularly use 250MB? (For most people, this really isn't much. But when you only get to fucking use 4 GB of internal storage it's a giant fuck you.)
Bah, back to the topic at hand.
There isn't a good solution to searching, or for transparency at the moment.
The spam filter is awful as well. REGULARLY letting obvious spam pass, regularly blocking and filtering genuine users. It's real annoying that the Android app itself doesn't have support for seeing these flags outside of rooting through the settings a bit, but still. The web and iOS versions have this already.
Oh, it also completely lacks a dark mode like most Google apps for some fuckin reason.
That concludes my random 1:30 AM rant about something I have no ability to change, except hope in vain that someone who has the ability to change this forwards this to the developers of G+.
I need a better sleep schedule.3
Macbook - How do you get "True Tone" soooo wrong. If I wanted to automatically switch from light mode to dark mode every 20 seconds I'd ... I'd ... I'm not sure what I'd do, but seriously, that fucking shit has to stop.
Who knew you could make (more or less) everything dark mode in windows 7?
I wish windows 10 could also give the explorer a dark mode... As far as I know you can only use high contrast mode to do that which is ugly af. Why add a dark mode to the settings and start menu but not for the windws explorer?11
Been using Dark Mode for 3 years now but no idea why I didn't start using it before.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't of needed glasses 3 years ago if I did it sooner.3
Fuck you Figma, you don't even have dark mode, working with menus is fucking annoying, and your UI sucks. I'm going back to Sketch for now, see you later bitch.4
Just came across the NERSC Docs (https://docs.nersc.gov), absolutely wonderful open source docs by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center.
I believe they were written as a guide for people that would be using their super computers, but it's a very good linux beginners guide.
Plus, it looks nice (no visible dark mode tho...).
Screw you white flash of new chrometab, why must you blind me in the dead of the night?
Also why is there no real "force websites to dark mode" addon?
(currently using high contrast + uBlock-O CSS rewrite for daily sites)5
My younger bro started Coding today and the first thing he is asked me was if Jupyter Notebook has a dark mode or not.1
Any app which you use for long periods of time should have a night mode.
Night mode, for color optimizations for dark and to prevent straining of eyes.2
A question guys, I'm looking for a DB client. We are using SQL Management Server Studio, but its way way overkill for a frontend guy like me.
- Needs to be simple
- Must support MSSQL
- Plugin support and/or dark mode
- Free and/or not too buggy evaluation (like Sublime or Winrar)
- GUI should be reasonably modern
- Should also be native. Our database is a denormalized mess.6
Apparently Android Pay released for Canadians some time ago, because it's on the front page of the google play store. I really want to use it cause remembering to carry a card around is tough work, but I'm failing the safetynet check.
My only choice, it seems is to revert to a system where I don't have root. I was thinking of installing lineageos, but I'd be giving up some pretty serious things that I've gotten into with Resurrection Remix.
The fling navbar would be gone, I'd probably be able to deal with that but I just find it a way nicer experience than the traditional android navbar.
I might not be able to use Google Assistant, not sure if Lineage has it
And (worst of all), if I revert to a system without root, I won't be able to use my system-wide dark mode from substratum (I'd also be losing battery optimizing features from greenify, which is just another downside)
Existing Android Pay users, is this worth it?10
Try playing T-Rex game in chrome with dark mode enabled. For me, this looks like a bug, but maybe it's a feature!1
Everyone have their favourite IDE, but to me Plunker😊 has been a great one it has hell of capabilities and don't forget about the themes it has.. *dark mode* 👌
Every damn time I wanna make sample code ..voila plunker it is ! Best for Mean stack development 👈
Am I the only one who loves it ??1
What mysql client do you use in Mac with Dark mode? Table plus free is good and was thinking on purchasing it but sequel pro have better user experience. Currently no dark mode in sequel pro. Thanks! 😁8
I can't sleep so I'm making a dark mode userstyle for dndbeyond. The only one I could find on userstyles.org is from 2017 and doesn't darkmode everything2
I have a question about Android dark theme
I've added dark theme support for my application using 2 different themes declared in styles.xml.
On official android developer site:
"In order to support Dark theme, you must set your app's theme (usually found in res/values/styles.xml) to inherit from a DayNight theme"
and this is what I've done. I've also created colors-night.xml to avoid modifying colors that cannot be modified in styles.xml by coding and this works too: when dark mode is activated from device system, colors changes automatically.
At this point, I was wondering which is the best way to implements dark theme: creating 2 different themes, using colors-night (and drawable-night) or a combination of these 2 ways?
Me just now:
> finishes adapting an app for my purposes in android studio
Time to export a signed apk!
> successfully locates the keystore I generated a year ago
> even remembers the passwords
Nice! Now I can finally close Android Studio!
One second after I close it:
Shit, I forgot to enable dark mode
> reopens android studio
(The dark mode normally becomes accessible through in-app purchases, but since I built the app from source those don't work)3
