In an effort to deal with the number of “top priority” tickets, management has come up with a new priority level, “urgent”, to help differentiate between tickets that are “top priority” and tickets that are actually “top priority”.
So as you can guess all tickets are now codified as “urgent”.
I’ve suggested management downgrade some tickets back to merely “top priority” as we’re clearly right back where we started with it being difficult to determine which order to do tickets in.
They’ve ignored my request as the bletherings of a clearly unenlightened peon, and have instead came up with a new priority, “mission critical” which will be reserved for the most hallowed of emerg— oh no wait everything is now “mission critical” who would have guessed?
So “Top priority” is the now lowest priority a ticket can have…Naturally.18 -

Yo, is this devrant or spamspace???
Like, do you even fucking work, mates? Are you a dev? How doesn't a fucking legacy code piss you off on a daily basis? What are all the ways you want to respond to your customer's/PM's abuse? Does your lead dev even know jackshit?

... so... maybe not that much of a thing, but i think it is:
a gal (27 years old) i started teaching programming two weeks ago, who had literally no previous experience with programming, algoritmization nor c#...
... just now, after 3 lessons of 6 hours altogether, and after yesterday when i explained to her what arrays are and reminded her what loops do...
... invented bubble sort. on her own. no googling. on paper. no "trial and error code typing and running".
i'm actually pretty proud of her :)
... putting the algo concept into actual code will still be a bit of a struggle, but yeah, hell, can't help thinking that she's actually pretty smart :)
(p. s. fist lesson was i drew uml of a fibonacci algo and forced her to understand what it does, second lesson was i explained the minimum required c# syntax for her to be able to implement it and forced her to write it (with as little help as i could), third lesson was the concept of array and "okay, now here's array of numbers, make a function that will sort them")
looking forward to what will happen when i explain recursion and nudge her towards quicksort O:-)8 -

Because DevOps in a lot of organizations is really “help desk for clueless developers”, conversations like this happen a lot:
Dev “hey the thing seems to be not working right”
Me “what does that even mean? I need you to be a good deal more specific. What thing. What isn’t working?”
Dev “I dunno”
Me “Are there error messages?”
Dev “yes”
Me “….would you like to share them with me?”
Dev *sends error*
Me “ok did you actually read this error message?”
Dev “yes”
Me “…so you’re good then? It says you’re trying to use a variable that hasn’t been declared yet. You should fix that. “
Dev “…”
Me “good luck”14 -

OBS is advertised as the expert's screen recording and streaming tool, every list on the internet makes it out to be some incredibly difficult program not recommended for newbies.
It's also the only linux screen recorder that works out of the box on Pipewire, records both microphone and system sounds and all configuration was to
1. select recording as my main use case in the setup wizard which is a very verbose English popup, then accept all defaults
2. add a new source, following the instructions written in the box which are also the only instructions on screen after application launch
3. set the output directory (optional) by going to File > Settings > Output > Recording Path, all of which were the first items I guessed. If I had not done this, it would've written everything to my home folder which is a bit dumb but not confusing at all
4. click Start Recording
5. click Stop Recording when done
Some newbie-oriented screen recorders have a more complicated setup procedure than this super advanced experts' tool don't touch without safety gloves and a degree in video engineering.11 -

I have this pact with my neighbor - if someone delivers a package to them, I knock on their door when I notice it to let them know and if they don’t answer, I take it into my apartment and leave a note. Same goes if she or her kids see a package delivered for us and we don’t answer.
So last month, we have a flooding incident in our complex and her flat’s damaged so they have to leave to stay at a hotel for a bit. It’s only supposed to be until the 20th (of last month).
So when she gets a package a few weeks ago, I knock and when there’s no answer, take it into my apartment and leave a note.
Note stays on the door for days.
And then it disappears, so I assume she’s home.
But she never answers the door.
And then I see workers in her place.
So now I don’t know if it’s the workers who picked up the note or if she was back and I missed her.
But it’s been a couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry about her. Like, the day of the flood she almost died and I ended up coming over to help (getting her oldest to do CPR, talking to 911, trying to keep people calm), so I know she’s not feeling great lately.
And I’m the kind of idiot that never thought to exchange numbers.
So I’ve resorted to internet stalking and messaging her on Facebook.
And knocking on the downstairs neighbor’s door since I know they’re related. They didn’t answer. I’ll try again later.
I have no idea what else to do. I mean, I don’t think I can contact the office and be like “Can you please provide me contact information for my neighbor? I have their stuff. Thanks.”

Smartphones ruined social media. msn, yahoo, ICQ, even Facebook for some years - i loved them before. When you felt lonely you just looked who was online from your list and said hello and chat a bit because most likely the person sat in front of his or her PC and had time. At least it was indicated by the online status. I miss this feeling sometimes very much.
Now that everyone is online all the time this is gone. Among grown ups you only write someone if you have something important to say like setting up a date or what, and among the younger you send only memes. And even if you start a conversation you don't (and can't) expect a real time answer but see it as so called async comversation.random the good old times old mans complains blame it on the media i did not always hate social media5 -

The Project Management Triangle "fast-cheap-good (pick two, you can't have all three)" is something I've never agreed with.
How would you promise to build something good & cheap?
Doing it slowly will not really make it cheaper. The cost is usually development hours. If it takes 40 hours to make a good product - doing it 2 hours per day isn't going to make it cheaper.12 -

Me: Thanks for the invite. But I’m not a good role model for this.
FC: Why not? You’re a successful engineer!
Me: So I used my full tuition university scholarship on an art degree because I was too depressed after a long physical illness. Oh, and for some reason a lot of y’all assumed I went to a private uni when I went to the public uni. Then I went to graduate school immediately after and during a recession and ended up with tens of thousands in student debt. Then I did a lot of part time jobs before going to a shady coding bootcamp. I’m lucky to have encountered an advocate and a company willing to take me on as a junior dev. I’m pretty sure I was a diversity hire and I was definitely underpaid. I’m lucky to have moved on from there and to be thriving now. Oh my god, GDScript is the single biggest piece of shit scripting language I have ever witnessed. It somehow manages to combine the very worst things of dynamic typing with the downsides of static typing, all in one bundle of utter shit
Imagine you have two game object scripts that want to reference each other, e.g. by calling each others methods.
Well you're outta fucking luck because scripts CANNOT have cyclic references. Not even fucking *type hints* can be cyclic between scripts. Okay no problem, since GDScript is loosely based of Python I can surely just call my method out of the blue without type hints and have it look it up by name. Nope! Not even with the inefficient as fuck `call` method that does a completely dynamic-at-runtime fuck-compile-time-we-script-in-this-bitch function call can find the function. Why? Because the variable that holds a reference to my other script is assumed to be of type Node. The very base class of everything
So not only is the optional typing colossal garbage. You cant even do a fucking dynamic function call because this piece of shit is just C++ in Pyhtons clothing. And nothing against C++ (first time I said that). At least c++ lets me call a fucking function6 -

Good Morning! (it's morning here in my area) My coworker gave a good word today "Don't work for an arsehole until forgot to work for yourself" and "Working for a company who under appreciate you is like having sex with a zombie , the more you remain inside, the more part of your penis disappear"
hahahahaaha and today is his last day..6 -
Good morning devs let’s rock this weekend 🥳

Are antiviruses worth it ? My subscription expired a few days ago and they're pestering me to renew it. Will Windows Defender be good enough ? Do I really need an anti-virus ?15

Finally!! The rust team fixed the environment setup thingies for Windows. Finally! I can run rust without needing to do all those bullshits like downloading things manually and installing thingies.
Thanks rust team. Good job5 -
Tired of seeing people showing off their bootcamp certification on LinkedIn as if they had just climbed Mount Everest, and as if they were about to enter the most glamorous field of work one could imagine.
OK I went through a bootcamp myself but I certainly knew I was still a baby upon completion of the journey and still consider I have a veeery long way to go today after two years of dev work experience. Also I knew working as a developer probably wouldn’t be as awesome as these bootcamps make it out to be. In fact it’s everything but glamorous when you take into account the stress, the dynamics with coworkers, POs, PMs, shitty management, wacky clients, weird demands, deadlines etc.
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy being a developer and have more or less been able handle the workload and expectations. But for goodness sake stop drilling into bootcampers’ heads that it’s gonna be amazing and that they’re doing incredible things. Congratulate them for their hard work and then wish them good luck because they’re going to need it. Bootcampers, stay humble. Be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best3 -
I'm gonna start my first internship ever in two weeks. Have you any advice to avoid trap and make a good entrance in the company ?7

I have connections in a country with low wages, so I can get cheap but ok/good quality devs.
What is the best way to leverage this?14 -
Just finished a little proof of concept of a reprojected multisample antialiasing technique and daaaaamn it's looking good. First time ever a rendering technique I invented isn't complete shit so that's an improvement
It still has some (pretty big) issues with both spatial and temporal ghosting but I have some ideas in the pipeline
I wish I could show you guys comparison images but as it turns out most anti aliasing techniques look pretty good on still frames but only the good ones stand up under motion and I don't know of a good way right now to capture pixel perfect clips like that5 -

A good conversation must be like a mini skirt. Short enough to cover the subject, long enough to retain the interest.2 -
Maintaining a good mood, listening to Avicii and electro house music the whole time at work.
It works so far, no more Kendrick Lamar or NF. -
There are as many "good practices" as there are developers. Everyone holds the absolute truth. (At least it’s the feeling I get, and it drives me crazy sometimes)1
-
Ok, now marketing people are just baby talking at this point. “The bad guys are this and ur a good adult - if ur really a good boy u will contribute to the movement in buying this product”. I’m starting to realize how dumb we actually are individually again and I hate it.10

I wish Slack had a block feature. On a social Slack, someone lashed out me and started accusing me of horrible things. Admins did nothing after I complained and said my anger wasn’t in proportion to the situation. Fuck that.
The lasher out accused me of ableism, povertyism, and condoning human rights violations. It was so outrageous that even a bystander tried to intervene because lasher out was clearly acting out on a trigger and I had not done anything to deserve it.
I had this problem with the lasher out before, but this time they went too far.
So I have one less social platform to engage with. Good riddance. I’m not participating in a place that is not a safe space.
I thought Facebook would be the one I unplugged first.12 -
I have no friends and seriously talking to my co workers give me more stress, so I avoid them. Not all but most.
How to find good people around here, I'm having no idea.4 -
I am never in my best form when I'm fully conscious and logical.
I have to be semi conscious for good ideas to come out.
from what I've experienced so far.2 -
My workflow would greatly improve if my stakeholders would just communicate when they make changes to the systems that the website interacts with. It would also help if they didn’t lie when they make a f*** up. Lack of info and lies don’t help me solve the issues they created. But I realize asking for this is like believing that Santa is going to send me a puppy for Christmas.

Developers celebrate new Safari browser features. Nice! Good work! But when will Apple ship the new Safari to older macOS and iOS versions?
That would increase compatibility and reduce planned obsolescence, Apple! 🍏🍎👿4 -
Why am I like that....
All is good, there is ONE FUCKING request which is slow.
Why, why I'm searching it ? For fun I guess !4 -
To my review of 2021 ... a good lesson was learned.
I was doing so much for my company.. late night workings.. team handling.. client handline.. to name a few.. But in december they broke my heart.. Altough after little negotiation I was able to get a good package but somehow I Realized this is the time to switch.
But am at good position in my current company so I just cant go away for few pennies. I have to check for company's culture.. my tech stack.. etc too..
But I am determined to get a good job and packge with Challeging tech stack in 2022.
Hope this 2022 Bring brighter future to all of you .. Happy New year -
thought will get a good job just by computer science degree, 2 years in and my misconception faded away T_T6

For those using Windows 11. How's it been as a development environment/base OS? Any temptations to switch to Linux? I've been seeing a good number of web developers on Twitter make the jump so I thought I'd ask.20
-
What OS do you use at work?
Are you local admin of your work computer?
If no, how are local admin rights managed?
Do you think that giving local admin rights to devs is a good idea?14 -
Hey all!
What are some good tech books to purchase for a holiday read?
Currently work as an SRE engineer if anyone has specific books relating to that topic however doesnt need to be SRE specific.1 -
Hot take: It's impossible to be a good programmer while relying on the gui. It's a crutch holding you back.28

I feel bad for bootcampers. Their schools tell them to apply for a job even if they don’t have all the qualifications because they will learn on the job. That’s fine if you’re applying for an upgrade in the same career path. But when you’re changing careers, a lot of jobs don’t necessarily have time to invest in you like that.
I do have respect for those who DM me on Slack and ask if the job is open to new bootcamp grads. At least they are taking the initiative to ask and not sulking that they’re not good enough.
I tell them “this role requires experience in x. If you have that, then apply” because I don’t actually know they’re not qualified.
I was like them before. It’s hard to get the first job and sometimes it’s a lot of luck. But the first job will make getting the next one easier.
At least they’re not recruiters trying to convince me to pay them to fill the role.1 -
What a fuck is wrong with GitHub? Almost every day there are a few minutes when requests take ages to load. Is Microsoft messing up their cloud?
(Everything else works correctly. E.g. devRant opened instantly, speedtest measures good network speed)7 -
One good thing about the rona I'm guessing is employers would be more willing to let top performers go full blown remote.
Don't mess this up guys. -
Are there any good alternative forums for stackoverflow that also allow more broad questions and offtopic?2
-
Everyone seems to be obsessed with wordle at the moment so it got me wondering.
How many programmers here enjoy or are good at puzzles?
Personally I don’t enjoy puzzles too much nor am I great at them.
Do you need to be good at one to be good at the other?7 -
Hey

Android OS is officially done in 2022 and belongs on a graveyard with all the other projects that started out good but got ruined later by corporate bullheads1
-
i think 2022 is gonna be the worst year ever judging by the omnicron and i think there will be more covid varients, and they will be more dangerous. the vaccine could just not work in response to the variant and millions of people could die because of that.
it could be a good year, but i don't really agree with that. and judging by the past two years, it doesn't look so good because of what happened in the last two years.
(blm riots, covid, india running out of oxygen for its hospitals, january sixth, etc)
but maybe, just maybe its good, but i don't really know.3 -
Why does .NET keep using XML for its project files? Just wondering if there is something I'm missing and there is a good reason why you'd want to use XML instead of JSON.16

@dfox For some reason, I can favorite my own rants if I send a request to do it manually, I guess that's not... good?9

my fellow nerds, what are your favorite rpg tropes? we're making a little game to raise morale at work, with our colleagues as character, and I'm not very good at coming up with events14

A mentor from my pre-tech days passed away. 😭 It’s so sad because it was unexpected and he was in good health. His peers are still into Facebook, so that’s how I was able to piece together what happened.

What is it with UX designers who have no clue about what makes a good, usable, logical and efficient to develop and maintain UI that users will be happy to use?
The profession appeared out of nowhere a few years back and I have yet to meet a single one who has even basic sense of what makes good UX.8 -
Them new fangled MacBook Airs sure do look good. And this new version of MacOS looks tempting too. 🤔8

Anybody has any recommendations for a good headset that is over ear, has ANC & is wireless with a base station?
If I can't find a good one, I'm stuck with buying my own ANC headphones or using some "noise cancellation" headset, that literally does not cancel anything.2 -

Currently, cause holiday camp for the children
Probably a good idea to collect some social skills there, as that's nothing that is required or learned with my dev job -
Ok so a company from a neighboring country contacted me for a remote job opportunity... the offer was quite good
Now I'm working more on his project even at work than my work project -
