Please stop recommending arch. For real. Stop!
Let's back up. I'm an arch user. Have been for years. I love arch! Like hardcore! But for real, cut it out.
Either they didn't ask and you're being obnoxious or they probably asked "what's a good distro to learn?" Or "Ubuntu holds my hand too much, I want something more consoley" either way, arch is not the answer. Arch is a distro for us stuck up types who like spending all day fixing dependency errors, changing our WM every other week, debating the merits of X vs wayland, and acting better than everyone else.
But here's the thing: I found arch because I wanted something that I could compulsively configure and get really in the weeds. I think most arch users feel that way to some degree. You kinda have to if you want to not be miserable. But many Linux users aren't like that. And that's fine! Let them use mint, or Debian. So they never change their DE. Cinnamon is a great interface! Gnome 2 is totally fine! There's literally nothing wrong with being content with sane defaults and not manually installing every package, and having scheduled releases from a stable source.
Do you tell 7th graders "if you really want to get better at algebra, you should try calculus. You really gain a deep knowledge of math!" No! They will get there when they are good and ready! Or not. It's not a beginner distro. In fact (controversial opinion ahead) it's pretty shitty at being a distro. I have used arch for years! But I don't recommend it to anyone. Because if you want to configure a box for literally 100s of hours (it's never really over is it?), Then you aren't asking anyone about distro recommendations. You've tried them all. You've heard of arch. You been to /r/unixporn.
Stop acting better than everyone else and stop telling people it's better than <other distro here>. It's not. It's different. Very different. And it's not for everyone.26 -

What do you guys think?48 -
Finally got around to installing Arch on an actual machine 😀
I went for deepin since i wanted to try something new. I didn't go for any WMs since the whole concept seems complicated to me but i wanna look into it someday.
Anyways, super happy so far. I boot in < 5s from hitting the power button which is super dope ♥️ ♥️. I did have some weirdness with nvidia drivers (as usual on linux lol) but reinstalling it fixed it.40 -
An Arch Linux user is like a Vegan. If you can't identify one, wait till they announce it to the world!
P.S: I'm a vegan!30 -
So I recently started discarding Proxmox for Arch on my experimental server.. new skill acquired 🙃13
-
Surprise, a "user" maintained repository, is able to host malware, shocker.
https://sensorstechforum.com/arch-l...16 -
That moment when installing arch...need wifi drivers to access internet and need internet to install wifi drivers 😢9
-
Browsed around the internet for a good linux distro to use.
Someone somewhere recommended Arch.
Downloaded Arch and usb booted it.
Tried to install it for 30 minutes and gave up.(😂)
Found a new recommendation, Bunsenlabs.
Now i have installed Bunsenlabs on every device i have (except for my phone & tablet of course :DD)
It's great!
(Image is not related to earlier text)9 -
I've been a lurker for a long time. However, I decided to make an account to let you guys know I use Arch. Thank you for your time.10
-
Me: wow in really starting to love arch Linux, feels good to be away from Ubuntu!
Ubuntu: Yo! 18.04 is here!
Also me:2 -
*sees people on Facebook wanting to get Linux certificates*
Me: naah that's not how I'ma do it
*at le job interview*
Interviewer: "So you apply as a sysadmin.. what are your skills? Certificates?"
Me: "No certificates sir.. but I USE ARCH LINUX 😎"
Me (quietly): "and Ubuntu Server too but that's not as cool :v"9 -
Finally, after 3 tries and lots of experimentation, I have set up the arch system. I am in "deep" love with deepin desktop environment.
P.S. - Still finding a good web browser though firefox sucks so bad right now plus the fonts are super bad.13 -
Thank you Arch Linux community for saying that caring about security (i.e. expressing concerns about NSA's Speck being included as a module in Arch's distribution kernel) means that you're a tinfoil hat. Much trust, very wow! Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.. right?16
-
Got arch Linux working on my laptop.
Installed Budgie GNOME, Cairo dock, Termite, VS Code, Code::Blocks, Android Studio, IntelliJ....
It's so beautiful9 -
Recently started using Arch after a year of distro hopping starting from Ubuntu, to Fedora, to Mint, to Opensuse. I have never been as satisfied with a distro as I have with Arch. I have learnt so much from just fiddling and reading through the archwiki.
Once you go Arch you don't go back.41 -
Arch Linux is officially dead due to fanboys who always says “I use Arch Linux” everytime when they open mouth. It is considered as mental illness so they have to shut down.10
-
Yessss. Took me a few tries throughout the day but I successfully installed arch linux on my laptop :D Any good desktop environment recommendations?23
-
So I've been MIA lately for personal reasons, but think I'm ready to get back into my coding and stuff :) Here's my arch setup that I've been working on recently.7

echo Hello World!
This is my first time here at devRant and I have to say that it's amazing!
Just something to fill this a little more:
Linux enthusiast since 2011.
I'm your stereotypical v̶e̶g̶a̶n̶ Arch user (btw, I use Arch).
Right now I'm learning C and C++(using the QT framework).
Let's the Rant games begin!10 -
This is real. I Used to hop distros like a mad man and I stopped hopping after installing arch and started hopping between desktop environments and window managers. Source: r/linuxmastrrrace16
-
I did it ma! I installed Arch Linux! On a pendrive!! First try too! Now I just have to slowly add things I need and configure it slowly.. Goodbye weekend :')3
-
Arch users are literally like vegans, or guys who study the law - they can’t live normally if they don’t tell you that they use it. Just because you can install it, doesn’t make you instantly a Linux god. It’s like Kali users that they think that they’re hackers if they install it, or MacBook users that think that they are “kool kids” because they have a laptop that thousands of other people have.
Nobody. Cares.10 -
Just switched my girlfriend's laptop from Ubuntu 16.04 to Arch. Every single glitch and issue we were having is gone. She's even got some buttery smooth Wayland going.13
-
So im trying to learn to install arch Linux and it's safe to say... I have no fucking clue what in doing :-D9

When i successfully install Arch on my system.

Blender animation playback under
Windows - 9.1 fps
Arch - 10.6 fps
Impressive! Both are too slow to be usable (curse my shitty laptop) but hey, I'll gladly take that 1.5 fps improvement.4 -
This is what I get for wanting to try Arch Linux again.... I even followed a guide so that I don't mess up. 😑 Fuck you Arch Linux and your complicatedness. And fuck you too brain for being Arch Linux dumb.20
-
Mojang released the minecraft official launcher for Gnu/linux, and they fucking have an Arch package! That’s right motherfuckers: AN ARCH PACKAGE!5
-
So what do you guys do when you're bored?
My friends : Browse Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, read some blogs maybe..
Me : Browse through the Arch Linux wiki... I mean,... you know Twitter, Reddit, the usual..6 -
Telling an Arch beginner to try Gentoo is same as telling someone who switched from Java to C to try assembly.3
-
As a total noobass with Linux I tried installing Arch. Why the fuck did I do that.
I fucked up the drive partitions, deleted the Windows boot loader and now neither Windows nor Arch fucking loads.
Can this get any worse12 -
Imagine if, when a Windows version became outdated (So anything before Windows 8, I guess), Microsoft made it available in the public domain.
We could have Windows distributions, just like Linux! Imagine how weird it would sound if you just said to your Linux-using friend, 'Oh yeah, I use arch!' and they replied 'Oh, me too! I love Arch Linux!', and you just stare at them and say:
'What's Linux? I only use Arch Windows.'
...
...
...
'Arch Windows? Are you stupid?', they would reply in utter disbelief.
We all know someone's gonna blurt out 'Yeah guys! I just downloaded Kali Windows so I could learn to hack, I don't know what you're talking about!'
Ah, good times.3 -
Let's make a challenge:
If we put a vegan and an Arch user on the same room. which one will talk first announcing that he's vegan/using arch??14 -
I'm attacking all the guys who run arch and think they are heroes. Just a load of noobs following online guides who want a cookie for their cv or water cooler street cred. Just fo.7
-
I'm resignating from Arch, Ive used it this week for a school project and as a linux newb- I cant do a lot. I have no clue how to print stuff, where to find my connected networks or how to connect to them etc. I like what it offers and I know it can be good but I'm too new to all of this to effectively use it. BUT I'm not giving up, I'll try Manjaro next as I read that it's newb friendly and I really like how it looks.
Also attached an screen of my Arch setup: i3gaps, plasma and whatnot8 -
"Time to install Arch Linux!"
*8 hours later*
"Back to Open Suse!"
Repeat every 4-5 months.
Seriously, I would LOVE to get Arch running on my laptop, but everytime I try to something goes wrong, be it bootloader, audio, cooptimus drivers, undetected network card, window manager going crazy, etc etc etc... and I simply end giving up and reinstalling my backup.
Someday, Arch, someday...4 -

Creating a custom arch Linux live usb.
Need install media with lts kernel and thought I'd go full hog with x/i3 and some of my apps/configs.
Wish me luck.8 -
Cool, I got psx working great on arch :D Took a lot of tweaking but so far the graphics aren't too terrible and no popcorn sound xD which is surprising given the old hardware I'm using.3
-
Enjoying my new dev environment already.
This is a real install alongside my existing windows install. Surprisingly enough, windows has in no way complained about Arch!12 -
First time installing Linux on desktop, I’ve decided for Arch because I wanna learn. Skimmed through official guide, looks hard.
So exciting, I love computers!10 -
Currently installing Arch Linux on my old machine ^^ Gonna revive it as a secondary machine I'll do some stuff on. Maybe. Perhaps.8

What is the most common behavior between Arch users and vegan? 😂😂
I found this comment on a video that had nothing to do with Arch and being vegan11 -
Ordinary people brag about something they did in sports or somethin else boring they
did in their living.
Tech geeks brag about finally succeeding in installing Arch Linux.1 -
Professional .NET Developer here:
After years of using Windows and C# for everything at work and at home, I finally switched yesterday from Windows 10 to Arch and from C# to Python for my hobby projects. Feels good!2 -
So I ended up installing Arch Linux as the primary OS in my laptop, and to be honest, I'm not very crazy about it. Because I'm someone who likes an elegant UX, I spent three days and over 50 reboots and 5 reinstalls just trying to get Plymouth to work correctly (in the end, I just said screw it and gave up.) I know, I probably messed something up in the installation or configuration, but I didn't really want to deal with it anymore.
I'm not a big fan of the pacman package manager; I prefer apt. There were several applications I couldn't get to work properly, such as Steam, the Tor Browser, and Wine. All in all, I've basically wasted a week trying to get Arch Linux to work as the daily driver on my laptop, but I guess it's just not the distro for me.
I'm going to give Arch one last shot with the Manjaro distro. I'm hoping that Manjaro's simplified installation and configuration will produce a more usable (in my case) OS, and if not, I'll probably be going back to something Debian-based.
I'm not at all saying Arch is a bad distro. I know many people use it as their daily driver, and I have absolutely no problem with that. I'm not writing this to debate which distro is better, I'm just writing about my experience with it. Arch just may not be the distro for someone like me. At least I gave it a shot, right?10 -
Haveing Arch Linux on my old laptop. Before Arch it was slow. Now I have OS so minimalistic that there's almost nothing after booting.
I even have to start GUI manualy beacouse I don't need it always.
Almost non of my friends can use it so my data is safe here (I like privacy).
But for downside I imagine useing vim in text envirement during flight. Non tech guys can assume that useing vim is plane hijacking.5 -
The updating process on my Arch installation went banana's... Ugh... I wanted to do some coding and not fix this bullshit :(9
-
Just got one refurbished laptop (x220)
Going to install Arch (first time). Let's see how well it goes :-)4 -
Had given my laptop at the repair store. They were just suppose to do a checkup and then give a choice on whether to repair or not. They repaired it and charged me 2.8K. No unit replacement or anything, just service. I didn't mind it (was actually happy seeing my laptop boot up and not have a blank screen). It's a dual-boot (Windows/Antergos(Arch-linux)). It booted to Windows instead of GRUB. Didn't care too much, because it had happened before and I had handled it.
After I take it back home, I discover that the WiFi doesn't work (it doesn't even seem to be a driver issue). Live boot of arch doesn't have access to WiFi either. Reinstalled GRUB, only to discover it doesn't boot successfully (issues with video card). So, now I'm stuck with fucking Windows WITHOUT WiFi and an arch-linux that doesn't fucking boot.
Gonna reinstall Arch now.
P. S. : Windows is super fast, because I haven't really used it and don't really like using it. I feel very limited by Windows.8 -
Really can't be bothered with installing arch Linux manually... I feel dirty downloading antergos :-/18
-
At first, I was skeptical and somewhat resilient of trying Arch Linux. As a former Debian based distros user, I have to say : once you go Arch you don't go back! Time to 🍚 it up a bit more!6
-
Why do people suggest using arch when they have many ready to go distros.....?
I've heard that chances for breaking the whole system is high and is risky...18 -
Tired of installing Arch, I've made a script to automatize the installation. I'm going to upload it later. :DDD2
-
Alright, who is rigging the "Top Tags" results? Where is Arch?
Arch users: we should aim to get `arch` into the devRant top tags by the end of the year2 -
Tried to dual boot Arch with Windows yesterday.
Everything was going smoothly. Shrunk the C: partition, ran the installer, installed the OS fine. But it was still booting straight to Windows.
So I edited the BCD to point to Grub instead of Wilndows. Then the plan was to boot into Arch, find Windows, and add it to Grub, problem solved.
Wrong. I had forgotten to disable secure boot. Arch and Grub were booting in BIOS mode, but Windows was UEFI. Grub couldn't boot or even see Windows.
So now I was stuck with just Arch. So I flashed a Windows drive, booted from that, automatic startup repair failed. Opened up the command prompt, tried to rebuild the BCD from there. Surely I can just rebuild it and forget about trying to dual boot right? I just want to get back to being able to use my PC.
Wrong again. Didn't find Windows. Had to get rid of the BCD file before I could rebuild it, but couldn't find it. Found out that I could use diskpart to mount the system partition and assign it a drive letter, renamed the BCD, rebuilt it, and finally was able to reboot into Windows.
Learn from my arrogance. First time Linux users should not attempt to install Arch, let alone do it alongside Windows on the same disk.4 -
*trying to install arch linux for the first time*

> system goes into a boot loop
> cant get into BIOS

I have a dream that one day I will build my own computer and install arch linux so that I could say I assembled both hardware and software.2

Found this aluminum Arch Linux sticker on Etsy. I'm sure some of you will enjoy it. I thinking of ordering a few myself.

Well, it took me 7 hours but I finally made it.
I have a functional Arch Linux installation on my new laptop.
oh except the audio fails from time to time but it'll work eventually
and my hard disk starts clicking whenever I reboot even though I keep disabling its "power management"
and for fucks sake will you please mount my usb when i tell you to
and my touchpad doesn't work
but I can code and play games on it so whatever it's functional8 -
Simplest ways are the best - I've choosen Arch for my old computer which is meant to run Kodi. Works like a charm 😍

When you love and use arch-linux based distros but everyone that does support linux only seems to know about ubuntu...4

Am I the only one who thinks the installation process for arch linux should be narrated by Jigsaw from the Saw movies?1

Yesterday evening I installed Arch Linux and switched to Vim. I had my first spontaneous full body orgasm.3

Update to my previous desire to install Arch Linux on my MacBook...
Well, I installed it, played around a bit... now gonna install OS X back... primary reasons being the fact that there r a lot of things which u must do to get arch to work perfectly in MacBook... ( special kernels and stuff ) and I use an iPhone 😐... in other words, m locked to the ecosystem... for now...
I was so hoping to use arch... it wud have been amazingly fast on the SSD... 😍😍
No m not gonna use VM since it’s not fun 😂😂
Wish iTunes worked in Linux too ☹️😕7 -
These ignorant comments about arch are starting to get on my nerves.
You ranted or asked help about something exclusive to windows and someone pointed out they don't have that problem in arch and now you're annoyed?
Well maybe it's for good.
Next comes a very rough analogy, but imagine if someone posts "hey guys, I did a kg of coke and feeling bad, how do I detox?"
It takes one honest asshole to be like "well what if you didn't do coke?".
Replace the coke with windows.
Windows is a (mostly) closed source operating system owned by a for profit company with a very shady legal and ethical history.
What on earth could possibly go wrong?
Oh you get bsod's?
The system takes hours to update whenever the hell it wants, forces reboot and you can't stop it?
oh you got hacked because it has thousands of vulnerabilities?
wannacry on outdated windows versions paralyzed the uk health system?
oh no one can truly scrutinize it because it's closed source?
yet you wonder why people are assholes when you mention it? This thing is fucking cancer, it's hundreds of steps backwards in terms of human progress.
and one of the causes for its widespread usage are the savage marketing tactics they practiced early on. just google that shit up.
but no, linux users are assholes out to get you.
and how do people react to these honest comments? "let's make a meme out of it. let's deligitimize linux, linux users and devs are a bunch of neckbeards, end of story, watch this video of rms eating skin off his foot on a live conference"
short minded idiots.
I'm not gonna deny the challenges or limitations linux represents for the end user.
It does take time to learn how to use it properly.
Nvidia sometimes works like shit.
Tweaking is almost universally required.
A huge amount of games, or Adobe/Office/X products are not compatible.
The docs can be very obscure sometimes (I for one hate a couple of manpages)
But you get a system that:
* Boots way faster
* Is way more stable
* Is way way way more secure.
* Is accountable, as in, no chance to being forced to get exploited by some evil marketing shit.
In other words, you're fucking free.
You can even create your own version of the system, with total control of it, even profit with it.
I'm not sure the average end user cares about this, but this is a developer forum, so I think in all honesty every developer owes open source OS' (linux, freebsd, etc) major respect for being free and not being corporate horseshit.
Doctors have a hippocratic oath? Well maybe devs should have some form of oath too, some sworn commitment that they will try to improve society.
I do have some sympathy for the people that are forced to use windows, even though they know ideally isn't the ideal moral choice.
As in, their job forces it, or they don't have time or energy to learn an alternative.
At the very least, if you don't know what you're talking about, just stfu and read.
But I don't have one bit of sympathy for the rest.
I didn't even talk about arch itself.
Holy fucking shit, these people that think arch is too complicated.
What in the actual fuck.
I know what the problem is, the arch install instructions aren't copy paste commands.
Or they medium tutorial they found is outdated.
So yeah, the majority of the dev community is either too dumb or has very strong ADD to CAREFULLY and PATIENTLY read through the instructions.
I'll be honest, I wouldn't expect a freshman to follow the arch install guide and not get confused several times.
But this is an intermediate level (not megaexpert like some retards out there imply).
Yet arch is just too much. That's like saying "omg building a small airplane is sooooo complicated". Yeah well it's a fucking aerial vehicle. It's going to be a bit tough. But it's nowhere near as difficult as building a 747.
So because some devs are too dumb and talk shit, they just set the bar too low.
Or "if you try to learn how to build a plane you'll grow an aviator neckbeard". I'll grow a fucking beard if I want too.
I'm so thankful for arch because it has a great compromise between control and ease of install and use.
When I have a fresh install I only get *just* what I fucking need, no extra bullshit, no extra programs I know nothing about or need running on boot time, and that's how I boot way faster that ubuntu (which is way faster than windows already).
Configuring nvidia optimus was a major pain in the ass? Sure was, but I got it work the way I wanted to after some time.
Upgrading is also easy as pie, so really scratching my brain here trying to understand the real difficult of using arch.22 -
I just saw people speaking about arch linux. Seems like there is not a lot of people using arch here. So I may be the only one on Gentoo? :'(10
-
Is using Arch Linux the nerd equivalent of being vegan?
Like they have to mention it to everyone.
Btw I use Arch and am vegan.2 -
I'm in the middle of installing a dual-boot arch along side win 10 in uefi mode and i'm pretty sure something will fuck up 😬😬2
-
So I tried installing arch today. Spent all day trying to fix grub to be able to boot arch,Ubuntu and windows along with Intel microcode working on both arch and Ubuntu. But alas , I could not succeed and I cannot boot into Ubuntu now. I am going to reinstall Ubuntu tomorrow and leave arch for sometime later.2
-
Fuck arch.
I know what you're thinking
"arch isn't that bad he's overreacting"
WELL I'M NOT OVERREACTING!
Thanks to me trying to install Arch i cant get my laptop to boot. It just say some thing about network boot failing. I cant go into BIOS either. It doesn't work! I cant even boot from usb!! It still just say some thing about network boot failing, shows some weird black screen with a black bar at the top left and after a while shows some thing about network boot failing again and that repeats9 -
After the base installation of arch linux..I am trying to install the display server,Nvidia driver.and i3 wm...but getting errors..
Shall I install Display server xorg after or before the installation of Nvidia drivers??
What is the proper way to configure xorg and Nvidia?
When I give the startx command it is showing black screen....
@deadlyRants18 -
I use arch?rant i am a poser i actually just use manjaro love you all not really a rant i use arch i use arch linux4
-
I just switched from Arch to Fedora...
I know I know that all the cool kids use arch, but right now I'm not up for checking out random gdm bugs or some other manual tasks. I need a stable, fairly supported and well maintained distro and fedora just works!11 -
Fuck Arch wifi handling!!! Why can’t you fucking just have the needed software in the base package!!! Because when you take YOU FUCKING USB INSTALLATION SOMEWHERE THERE’S NO ETHERNET!!! You’re FUCKED!!! What’s the point! Now I need to boot from my lubuntu usb dual boot install, FUCKING INSTALL the Arch iso, VirtualBox and then the needed wifi packages!! Fuck!4
-
Seriously though.
Why use Arch. It sounds like headaches.
What is the benefit. Like, I used to have fun with
tweaking systems and so forth, until it became
not so fun when I had to actually do it to make
money, like server admin on my websites.
From the sounds of it, setting it up takes hours, none of the packages are quite ready, it takes google research and troubleshooting for common tasks, etc.
Why not say, Ubuntu, kde? Or whatever.13 -
Actuall live footage of me trying to install and configure VMware to work on arch at the moment...
(I might be a little fucking frustrated)8 -
Been thinking of doing this for years. But I think I'm finally gonna try it.
I want to dual boot my PC. Probably gonna go with Arch Linux + Plasma KDE.4 -
Arch has a great default package manager, and it's the basis for why I love Arch as much as I do.
A completed install is pretty minimal, and as a user who knows what apps I want, that's perfect for me. When I've used any other major distro of late, my post-install activity mostly consisted of removing software, changing defaults, and otherwise swimming upstream against the intent of the distro's maintainers.
With Arch, I start with a more or less blank slate, and then add the components I want to it. It's so intensely satisfying to have a system that is composed almost entirely of software I explicitly wanted to have.
The result is a system that behaves pretty much exactly the way I want.
Any other Arch users want to weigh in on what they like about it?12 -
In follow up to my last rant.....
A friend just informed me that I should enable dhcpcd to get networking in arch...
I was typing dchpd......
why don’t I read things more carefully
I’ve been at this for hours and I just installed ubuntu alongside arch because I need my laptop for tomorrow. Ugh -
Just installed Arch for my first time. Using lxde right now but sadly theres now way I can rotate my 2nd monitor (since I have it vertical). What desktop environments do you guys use? Should be lightweight/fast/not many animations and shit.14
-
I've decided to change the key components of my Arch Linux system. Of course it's not gonna be quick but here's my plan:
i3 -> bspwm
VSCode -> GNU Emacs
What do you guys think?13 -
Ah. The joy of installing arch fills through my veins...
I so did not miss installing it twice just to get it correctly installed... But m addicted!
FML2 -
TIL that you have to run Arch on everything including servers in order to be considered a competent system administrator19

Arch linux, iscript.sh

Finally decided to give Arch Linux a go on hardware.
I've never had so much fun installing a distro before.
I chose Deepin as the desktop environment, it's fucking beautiful.
(I somehow didn't really take to i3, I prefer a full blown environment like Deepin).
Since it's my first time using Arch and Deepin, do you guys have any advice? How you like to use and maintain Arch? Any tips? Productivity hacks? (Besides a tiling WM)2 -
You know you're bored when you boot up a random arch iso and just start seeing how fast you can break an install .-.4

Bumblebee Status, as requested in https://devrant.com/rants/2248495/...
Arch Linux, i3 wm, bumblebee-status. i3 config open in window.
Can't wait to bloat it up even more with a pomodoro timer and custom stuff!
(music: Bach: Prelude and Fugue No 11 from The Well Tempered Clavier Book 2, played by Walter Giesking, so highbrow lol)3 -
Nah I'll quickly fix my arch installation, can't take that long...
- my brain at 12pm (about half an hour ago)
Plottwist: I didn't fuck up the whole system and it's booting again.
I didn't expect that myself -
So I think I'm gonna give vscode another chance. I've heard so many good things about it, maybe I just didnt use it long enough. Let's see how well it works in arch xD2
-
So I installed manjaro over ubuntu lately.. because Ubuntu w/ gnome is fucking retarted and manjaro is a fucken bliss.
Guess what.. I'm using arch btw.8 -
Company's main server got an upgrade and I am installing the new one from scratch now.
The new server hoster has custom images and CDRoms. One of them is called "Arch Linux"...
I... I am very attempted! -
Uno questione:
Seeing as linux might be going down the shitter soon, could the, 'btw I use arch", meme be replaced with, "btw I use OpenBSD"?
Like I did with the last question, have a snek.12 -
Rant about my stupidity.
*Deep breath*
For a full day I've been trying to get the desktop environment on my fresh Arch installation working(on a spare laptop).
Guess what? I was running startx instead of startxfce4 and wondering why isn't xfce4 starting.
Guess I have more such stupid acts to be encountered.2 -
I have a gaming laptop with a 125gb ssd and 1 TB secondary drive. Ssd has just 20 GB free.
I wanna dual boot windows 10 and arch. Most of the secondary drive is full of steam games. Win 10 for gaming and arch is for projects.
What's a good way to partition the drives for arch? I can't guess how much space either will need in the future. And what do I do with the other drive?7 -
Tonight I spent 5 hours installing arch. After seeing everything go smoothly I do the final reboot, only to watch the grub command line appear on the screen. I tried to boot into my arch installation but it kept talking about kernels missing and stuff. I thought I learned a ton but Fuck me. Now I'm installing neon kde just so I have my fucking linux desktop ready. Maybe someday I'll make it...3
-
Today, i set up my first pure-Arch environment and I can say,
It's freaking awesome.
Sure, its more difficult to use than Ubuntu, but damn, its really just the system I want.3 -
TL;DR: Fuck fucking Arch fucking Linux. Gentoo. Yay or nay?
So over the last few days my arch install has gone to hell. A small install of a package brings up some other update as it needs an updated version, then shit starts to segfault. I've been compiling anything and everything from sources rather than using pacman, and it works great. My DE has an issue with animations and does a FULL FUCKING KERNEL PANIC when I as simple as change what virtual desktop I focus. I'm genuinely so fucking done with Arch and I wish to change. I'm not touching Ubuntu with a 10 foot pole, nor any other Debian shit, so I'm wondering whether Gentoo might be it. Anyone got experience with it? Worth a shot for an experienced linux user?6 -
I have a lot of free time now so time to move from Debian-based to Arch-based distro :D
I simply can't choose so I just picked up Antergos. Heard a good thing or two about Manjaro but eh for now let's just randomly pick.
Once I get familiar with this, probably will move to Arch Linux itself.2 -
I've been using ubuntu for more than 2 years now and would like to know why arch is so popular. What advantages does it have over other popular distros?5
-
Last weak I tried to use Linux Arch on my VM. The only Linux distribution I'm used to is Ubuntu and the fist time I launched Arch I completely forgot that it was " do it yourself ". And that the ISO isn't actually a fancy installer like the Ubuntu one.
So I started following a guide and found out that the arch wiki is actually the way to go.
I searched for 1 hour how to change the keyboard to swiss-french which was actually pretty simple.
After that exhausting research that made me realise how ignorant I am with UNIX universe, I finally tried to install the thing.
When I was done installing, it didn't want to boot after I restarted. I got stuck at the 'Booting...' screen. After a few tries I lost all my energy and motivation.
Tl;dr: Tried Arch Linux, realised I had no idea, gave up after a few tries4 -
Stop recommending arch
Start recommending arch wiki
These nerds spend so much stuff in their system that every weird shit and behaviour is there6 -
Can someone brag about using Arch when he spends more time using a live Ubuntu system to fix his Arch installation than actually using Arch?
Asking for a friend.7 -
I'm gonna be installing Arch for the first time, and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations.
I'm mainly interested which filesystem and system (aka systemd) thingy should I go with. But fell free to leave any other suggestions.15 -
Just installed arch on my laptop...
I've always been a Debian guy before so blimey that install was painful but I'm glad I've done it.
I then installed sddm, for some reason it seems to be an old version maybe? I was expecting the look of sddm you get in kubuntu, any ideas?3 -
I'm the maintainer of the Godot Engine package in AUR, some users have commented on the package that they would like to see it in the community repo of Arch Linux, but I have no idea how that is done.
Any pointers?8 -
If you are using arch and are making packages from the aur all I can say is use makepkg -s because then it will install all the dependencies for you.
Yay5 -
Guys, I have something to say. I've used Arch Linux since probably a couple months after I started using Linux. But today, I'm going to install Fedora on my PC. It's my gaming rig at this point (that really needs some upgrades), and it seems like Steam breaks on Arch every week.
With that system, at this point I want something I can just install, do some tweaking, and go.
Anyone have any other distro suggestions for a gaming rig?7 -
I had a long weekend so am installing Arch from scratch! Super fun but hard to get wifi working...3
-
I've spent months with like 200ms+ ping and I just read the Arch wiki for my network card for the first time. Turns out its a common issue that is fixed with one dam kernel parameter. Now my ping is <30ms. Linux just be like that ig.4
-
I want to buy an old computer and start playing with Linux Arch. Sounds like a lot of fun and frustration at the same time... I'm so excited!1
-
I'm actually setting up a server that's supposed to have a very good uptime with Arch Linux
ha
I use Arch btw13 -
What the fucking shit, Arch. In what universe/reality is a user expected to easily/quickly address GPG/PGP bullshit when they install Arch. It's already hilarious enough as it is for the user to input every single command in order to install the thing. -- That's actually what's great about Arch; you get return and assurance from each command. -- I understood the fact that you need the latest ISO release in order to even install Arch, but now, if you decide to pacstrap linux-hardened, or god forbid, a package that is who knows what, less maintained?... fuck knows what will happen.
The fantastic part, is that you can't do shit when you're in an arch ISO install. All of the simple and possible solutions that involve GPG DBs/keyrings/etc require you to have the all of the shit installed already; which is fucking impossible if the package manager is bitching about keys not being imported. The most fantastic part, is that there is probably some complete bullshit, ultra-exclusive command or simple solution that will fix this crap. - And if you even dare ask the Arch forums, you'll be branded as a "newbie" and sentenced to read the fucking wiki. - ??? -- That's not a fucking good thing. -- The majority of people who are installing Arch right now, are people who are installing it for the first time, and chances are, most of those people have no fucking clue what is happening; they're learning what is happening. Furthermore, they're probably the kind of people who aren't inclined (or they don't know how) to scour Google or the Arch forums for answers to vague, lazy-ass error messages. The whole point of this thing is show and confront the user about what they're installing and what they want on their computer. Holy shit. This is all the more reason to ensure that total, stupid, ambiguous bullshit errors do not occur. -- "error: key "dogshit master <dogshitmaster@dogshit.org>?" could not could not be imported". -- That's it. That's the error in it's entirety. For a fucking OS install. What the fuck.16 -
I'm discovering all I can configure with Arch... just figured to tell you, since if I don't do it doesn't count, right?...1
-
I just love antergos, haven't updated in like a month, because wasn't using my laptop as much, booted it up, ~200 package updates, it failed because one file needed to be deleted as per announcements (I now subbed to those) and all updates cleanly went through.
Last time I didn't update a week on arch, it broke ~6 core packages and my dm, never thought I'd be on a pretty much arch release, but without the actual bleeding edge issues. -
Man it is nice to be back on Arch after 3-4 years. That install is way easier than I remember too. From USB to pretty much set up and ready to go in about 30 minutes is pretty amazing.2

So this is my last few days with Linux Mint, I will miss you buddy. Either tomorrow or the next day(Switch day is the 10th but I don't know if that's what I want to spend my Friday on, so I'll probably do it a day ahead of schedule) I will be switching to *looks up my distrohop list*, oh boy, Arch Linux. And after reading the installation page on the Arch website, I am now a bit terrified xD
Well, here's to hoping I don't accidentally format my /home partition lmao -
The unix shell syntax is weird looking.
Gonna learn it next. Using Arch without knowing how some scripts work isn't optimal.1 -
I was about to reinstall Arch Linux when I've just realized that I can fix the problem with just reinstalling/reconfiguring GRUB.
Thinking just saved me hours.2 -
God, I wish there was a hybrid distro, between Debian and arch.
A big as fuck repo and update-alternatives like in Debian, but with pacman and makepkg.
Oh, and without systemd.5 -
Just finished installing arch linux on my notebook. Using kde plasma 5 but no it doesnt scale properly on my 4k screen3
-
Riddle me this: (Arch) Whenever network connection is lost, NetworkManager freezes for a good 10s. Neither nmcli nor nmtui nor client applications get anything back from it during this time. After that 10s, it detects that the connection was lost and continues normal operation.10
-
I've just fucked up my ssh config on one of my arch VM... Had to destroy it and make a new one ...
Fml -
Kinda annoyed that I got arch just so I could have a light weight Linux experience, after a day or two of setup I have over 800 packages installed with not much difference from my old mint setup.1
-
I should do school work.. But instead.. I'm attempting to install Arch on my other laptop :D first issue.. Can't even boot 💿
Gonna be fun5 -
.NET Core broke cause of the recent ncurses update… And I just HAD to do a full system upgrade on my Arch laptop right… Guess I'll try to downgrade ncurses now…
-
So it seems that my experience with arch keeps me coming back to the arch linux newbies corner site xD I guess that says it all. On the plus side, I'm learning a lot 😊
-
"I use arch btw"
Now I can say it too.
(On the mac, using the terminal)
arch -arch x86_64 gem install5 -
Serious question, looking for actual educational answers: I've used Linux for around 5 years now, but what, from a practical user standpoint, makes Arch so much "better" than other distros, as many seem to believe?4
-
I'm setting up my Linux environment
This is what I'm thinking:
Dual boot: Arch(anarchy)/windows 10
Linux:
Xmonad ->
Parths terminal deploy ->
Vim ->
Snipmate,
NERDTree
Suggestions?4 -
I've recently found out that you can have Arch on termux! It's amazing!
I'm currently installing pantheon to it! -
Should I switch to arch?
I really like its idea of being a rolling release distro.
Currently on elementary os after trying various other ubuntus and Debian (and using them some time)22 -
I just switched to void from arch, dunno why. It is really cool and has runit. And XBPS is actually 3x faster than Pacman. And I have 1Gb of ram, Arch used 950Mb BSPWM, Void 300 with XFCE.
Really a good distro2 -
At the risk of starting a war I have to ask...
Should I use Ubuntu or Arch and why? I've always used Ubuntu but have seen a lot of people talking about Arch. Maybe it's time to make the jump?17 -
friend: what os do you use?
me: arch linux
friend: what de do you use?
me: i3-gaps
friend: what editor do you use?
me: vim
friend: what file manager do you use?
* thinking i will say ranger *
me: vim-fs
...
friend: what browser do you use?
me: chromium+vimium
and that's when he lost his mind.10 -
About Linux distro.
I've been using Ubuntu for about two/three years now. I'm feel rather comfortable with Linux, but am not quite sure I'm at Arch level yet. What distro would you recommend for a mid-level Linux lover?8 -
Why does everyone talk about Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora for Linux based operating systems. Why not Zorin os or Arch.5
-
So I am really happy/frustrated right now.
I successfully booted into Arch Linux
Bluetooth headphones sound like I am talking on a phone.5 -
Ayyy, spent an hour installing arch, another with the desktop environment and another cause the audio and a whole other set of problems came up. Safe to say was the most frustrating yet the most satisfying install. If only all installations weren't a boring point and click.1
-
Finally did it!
Replaced my desktop pc (which I use for gaming) which had Windows 7 with Arch Linux! It was not hard because I already use it on my laptop.
OK it was a bit struggle with nvidia and cinnamon due to missing libraries I had to install which I don't know before.
But it is possible to play games on Arch?
Yes definitely!
CS:GO - works (native, steam)
League of Legends - works (wine)
World of Tanks - works (wine)
All I need is working (:1 -
Linux, you never fail to amaze me!
Started using Arch based Manjaro with xfce de couple of months ago. Everything was mostly fine even though I've never used anything that was based on Arch but it had a learning curve.
Couple of weeks ago I couldn't update my packages, I thought it would fix it by itself but I was wrong as you already probably know.
So yesterday I tried to manually fix it. Famous last words. After a lot of googling, trying some terminal commands - and failing, I see a warning labek on some text on the arch wiki - sudo pacman -Syi --force. I said fuck it and did it. Let's see if it works, I try to install a package, I mistype the name, press backspace - it puts a space instead of deleting?!?!?
I tried restarting, googling - nothing...
Guess I'll switch back to Debian based OSes.5 -
Don't you hate when you wanna install arch on your 6 year old laptop but it turns out it's uefi when you have already made partitions that is ext4 when you should have made it fat and then when you remove the partitions and do everything all over again you get some bullshit error when trying to use arch-chroot!
-
Well i fucking hate my life right now.. I had a running arch linux installation with i3 as my windows manager.. dont need a desktop environment.. i don't know what i've done but it doesnt boot anymore..
Guess i will reinstall it8 -
Currently attempting to install Arch Linux for the first time in a VM... because I'm bored. As a Pop!_OS user, I am actually starting to miss my graphical installers.
-
Why am I so curious?
You are always talking about Arch linux. Well, I got a second hand (very old) laptop to use as a backup, as I am going to working from home and I just have a desktop pc. So I decided to install Arch on it just to know how does it works. After this first experience, I would change it to a lubuntu (I am talking about a Celeron with 2GB RAM).
Well... I managed to install Arch. It is up and running. Lot's of problems to fix yet, sound, native wifi (I am using a wifi adapter that just works on any linux distro) etc but I am fucking in love with Arch! And I can't use it to work, as it is very unstable and I really need everything always up and running to work. I cannot have any glitch with the computer or I can lose a deadline.4 -
Failed installing Arch Linux....tried installing it three times
But at every boot what I get is Black screen with the cursor (underscore) blinking on it
I followed their official installation guide
Do anyone know how to resolve this problem?12 -
I'm so fond of "joe" as the main console editor.
But Arch Linux hasn't it in the repos. Screw you Arch! Keeping Fedora.3 -
As somebody who is used to Ubuntu (I just love the simplicity of just running an apt-get to download packages), should I switch to Arch?
Please only give factual reasons, not just "yes, cus it's arch"6 -
Cheating and using Arch-anywhere for my first foray into Arch after 3 hours of manual confit and computer failing over.4
-
had a blast helping a pal install arch (and setting up the necessities, like i3-gaps, neofetch, wal, etc...). tonight was awesome.
PS: i can recite any basic arch install by memory now, EFI or BIOS, and i'm slightly better at navigating vim now5 -
Finally, installed nvidia drivers on arch linux and I can watch videos without screen tearing.
It took me 8 months to figure out to download the main driver from their site instead of using the commands mentioned in arch wiki.15 -
Day 1 . Change of my PC from laptop to PC. All ok
Day 2 . My work place chief says me they order me a new SSD... Damn I've just done the installation of ARCH.
Day 3 . I reinstall ARCH on the SSD drive leaving the old HD as home partition..
Last day a collegue says me to leave the home partition on SSD and linking the permanent forlders on the old HD...
Never ending story... -
I just got a nice 240GB SSD and I'm puzzled by a thing: should I dual boot it with Windows 7 and Linux Arch?
I'm only keeping the windows for the games that "obsesses" me (was thinking of having a small 60GB partition for Windows, since I can barely play any games on my Sony Vaio) and I'm spending the rest of my time programming. But also I would have time for more things if I give up gaming on Windows (like reading, jogging)... I do not know what you do... My heart says Arch only but my mind says Windows also... what would you do? -
The moment you install arch Linux on vm, and you are faced with a terminal with no idea what to do.. #helpmearchmasters5
-
Good arch based security/privacy distros? I only know about BlackArch. Are there any good alternatives that are also pretty userfriendly for everyday work/development tasks?2
-
Entered into Arch club recently.
I've installed i3-gaps on my arch but looks very bad.
What I am missing?🤔9 -
Why is there so much hate towards Manjaro Linux and so much love towards Antergos ? I mean, it's still Arch, right ?
It's just that Manjaro has its own repos but you can still use AUR.3 -
Tried installing Arch the whole day... Always crashing at the booting sequence due to nouveau failure. "Pointer to TDMS table invalid" and "Pointer to flat panel table invalid"... Can't even login into the shell.
Fuck this shit... Has anyone tried Devuan? -
Anyone who got the latest photoshop version running properly on arch Linux? If so, how? I wonder if it works well on wine?3
-
I was thinking of switching from Antergos to Arch but im afraid i cant keep track of all the software i have. Is there any way to easily keep track of all software you have when switching os?1
-
Installed Kali Linux alongside Arch Linux. Earlier I was using systemd boot manager. Now that I've installed Kali, grub was installed along with it. Now when I boot arch via grub it's not loading.
Some of the daemons are loading and then it stops there itself.
Please help...13 -
Hi
any of you guys had problems with electron/puppeteer, especially trying to load pages using proxies
I'm using arch linux3 -
Successfully upgraded my Arch Linux system without breaking any software.
It's a good start for today.5 -
Before installing Arch Linux, I failed to see why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
After installing Arch Linux, still have no idea why I'd use it over Ubuntu.
(Still using and loving it though, after 3+ months.)1 -
Feel strange when I see recommended rant's and they are about someone trying install something (generally using the lord and saviour tux's best distro, arch) and having issues when I'm sitting here and just did it through pacman with no issues whatsoever... I might just be lucky I think...3
-
I am back to DevRant after about 2.5 years.
scrolling to some posts for a feew days now. I am wondering - is no one using arch anymore?
I am! So you know for sure now!10 -
!dev
ok tumblr and google photos BOTH tore up the quality - h
but here y'all go
https://parkcitymedia.tumblr.com/po... -
Definitely ricing.
Trying wms other than i3 on Arch Linux. Looking things to customize and feel awesome eventually.3 -
And here I am... Trying to do this again, just out of curiosity. I must like inflicting pain on myself because it's the 4th time I try to do that. Every time I tell myself it could be some valuable experience, but everytime, I give up in the middle because I have trouble focusing on that thing.... Oh well, maybe this time it will be the right one.
Arch︵ /(.□. \)<-me12 -
Soon I'll reinstall my linux system. (Currently Antergos + KDE). People keep mentioning arch, i3, and rice. I wanna give it a try. Any suggestions or hints you guys can give me beforehand?2
-
Serious question, what is the use case for Arch? From all that I hear about how complicated it is it doesn't sound very practical3
-
Hmm ... currently using manjaro (arch). Worth giving gentoo a shot? To those of you who use it on a daily basis, - can you recommended. Would you advice against it? Is it hard to get used it to it?6
-
Why is Arch User Repository considered as a strong point for Arch and Arch-based distros? is it more reliable than the way Ubuntu manages packages? is it ok to trust some guy that made a version of a program you need to run? why most of the programs that have a linux version are only available for Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora (made by their own developers)?13
-
Why the fuck does Arch ship with NTP installed but disabled by default? I know it's a DIY OS, but this is just plain inconvenient with no perceivable gain.12
-
I want to use a old (like around 6 years or so) old laptop with a i3 as controllcenter (for music, smarthome and stuff), writing machine and for some light virtualization maybe. It will run Arch (because i want toll tinker around with arch, so much fun ^^) and i just want to know your oppinions: Good Idea, Bad Idea and do you think it will even be working?1
-
So it's been almost a whole day and I've still not managed to Install Arch with LUKS/LVM and grub2. Time to give up? Yes.4
-
Spent an hour today trying to start arch update because gstreamer0.10 made me first delete a buttload of packages. Why did I even install it in the first place 😩
-
Does anyone know of a docking solution for laptops compatible for Arch Linux? The pluggable usb c or usb 3.0?
If anyone has had experience using any particular docking or any other alternatives, I’d appreciate some insight.2 -
How yesterday should have ended:
- completed vimtutor
- Arch installed on my laptop
- arch rice (essential)
- arch configured to consume as little battery as possible
How it ended:
- no working pendrive found in my house. FML
I know I already posted a rant/meme on installing Linux (I gave up cause too many problems) but this time it was for real. I'll try again today with a borrowed pendrive.1 -
My first tech blog about an issue I faced with arch. Your inputs please !
http://simplysanad.com/blog/2016/...3 -
I was thinking about installing Linux on my laptop and I was reading about the various distros for beginners and I came across Arch Linux, it seems not to be liked by this comunity. Why is it? What distro would be better?8
-
Anybody got good source of how to install Arch Linux alongside with Windows? Cause arch wiki is killing me.11
-
How to change gtk theme in KDE only for small amount if apps? My Eclipse suffers from breeze-gtk, foreground and background are same color in some places
P.S. I'm on Arch Linux distro -
Fuck Arch Linux
Love the AUR, but the fact that every -Syu I've done led to system wide failure is unforgivable
I'm coming home Fedora, also screw you Debian and your broken packages9 -
What is up with the trend of people using arch & manjaro linux lately? I've just been noticing that trend recently, especially on here4
-
i've been using debian with xfce for 2 years, and i'm now planning to migrate to arch with xmonad for some freshness. i'm reluctantly peeking out of my comfort zone and sniffing like a cat, any tips appreciated.
-
Manjaro or antergos?
I've only tried antergos so far, and it looks really promising, but some people say its bad... 🤔
Looking forward to switch to one of them though, don't feel ready to go pure arch yet 😅4 -
random rant:
as much as I like manjaro, and antergos is very nice looking, and sometimes arch bang is just easy and good:
they are not arch. yes they are arch-based. but you are not an arch user. you are a manjaro/antergos user. please do not call yourself arch users. and especially do not ask questions in the arch forums. all of these arch-based distros have their own forums for a reason.
that is all...3 -
Anyone who can point me into a good direction of linux customization? I want to customize my desktop experience. Like console style and such. I was thinking of arch but never actually made it trough setup.3
