Oh my god... Storytime.
A customer comes in with I assume is his father or grandfather.
Customer: I need a computer, but without all the internals
Me: So a case?
Customer: Yes, I need a Dell computer outsides, but without the internal components.
Me: Well, we don't have Dell cases, but we sell custom build cases and they come with a power supply.
Customer: *says nothing, but looks interested*
Me: *walks over to the cases to show him* So this is what the cases look like and we have two types, one for a ATX and one for a micro-ATX.
Customer: *still says nothing, but looks at them*
Me: What motherboard do you have at the moment?
Customer: Well, I don't have anything right now, but I'm replacing another computer that didn't work very well. I'm going to be getting some Dell parts to put in here.
Me: O-okay. So this other computer, I'd like to see it in shop to see what's going on with it.
Customer: Oh, you do NOT want to do that. I hooked it up to another computer and it blew it up.
Me: Huh, that's weird. I'd still like to look at it if possible.
Customer: Oh no, it's all wired wrong and... *some bullshit, but stay with me*
Customer: I am the best at technology. My hand has computer parts in it--government funded. *some more bullshit*
Me: Okay... *I try to bring it back around* Well, I'd still like to see the other computer for myself. So you don't have parts for this new build yet, right? You don't know what type of motherboard you have?
Customer: No.
Me: Well, I would get the internals first, so you know what size of case to get, and then get the case.
Customer: Okay. Thank you for your time.
He shook my hand with his "cyborg" hand and I was tempted to say something about "try not to crush my hand," but elected not to. Also during this entire exchange, the old man continuously farted in the background.22 -
We just put a windows update screen on the new salesguy's computer.
He was so confused!
Detail: he runs Ubuntu as well :P9 -

Upgraded work PC to a SSD. Can't believe the difference it made. It's like a new computer.
Only trouble is, now I can't blame the computer for my slow work...
Maybe I can blame the RAM from now on.9 -
I'm proud of my mom.... She's teaching herself WordPress and photo editing so she can help my dad's business :D
I disagree with WordPress entirely, but seeing my mom(who can barely create a new folder) teach herself something computer related is awesome.13 -

Manager: Hey what was that that you closed on your screen just now?
Dev: That popup? That’s NVIDIA letting me know that a new driver for my GPU is available.
Manager: Isn’t that for video games?
Dev: I mean that’s the reason many people opt into having a GPU but It’s not the on—
Manager: You are NOT allowed to play video games on your work computer!
Dev: This is my personal computer. It’s just an older GPU I popped onto this computer since otherwise it was just sitting in a drawer. My work computer is out of commission.
Manager: Well where is your work computer? How come you are not using it?
Dev: …Because of that blue screen of death issue we talked about yesterday.
Manager: Ok but that doesn’t give you permission to play VIDEO GAMES on your *WORK* computer.
Dev: …26 -

This month's expenses:
- Computer parts to build a new computer.
- Separate video card.
- Hex monitor stand.
- 6 (second hand) monitors

Me: Want to copy this file to another computer
Bluetooth: Use me!
Google Drive: I'm better!
USB: I can help
Network shared folder: I'm in position!
Me: Let me add it as an attachment to a new email and download it on the other computer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯6 -
We moved to a new office floor and got a brand new set up. My new extension monitor died just after 4 hours of use, it was showing a black screen a with couple of colourful lines running down the screen.
Got the IT guy to come and replace it. He says he must test it with a display cable even though the screen was dead without any input source. (Ok fine cbf arguing with you, just do it.)
*Magicarp used splash, nothing happened*
Realising I was right, he gave the ok for another guy to replace my monitor.
Second guy comes to my desk and realised he forgot the electric screwdriver. (Sigh, how long must I wait...) After he finally finished installing the new monitor he plugged the display cable into a random display port without looking.
*Magicarp used splash, nothing happened*
Since the monitor wasn't displaying anything, he jumped into asking me to restart my computer. I gave him "the wtf are you stupid face" and just said "NO". I looked over to where he plugged the cable and asked why he plugged into the "dp out" port.
I plugged the cable to the correct port and monitor was working.
Felt like I can do their job better without any experience in IT support.
PS. Don't play the "please restart your computer" card on me. I also work in technology.2 -
A: Hey look! I have a brand new computer!
B: Oh, so you use Linux?
A: No, I use Windows.
B: Than it's not your computer.13 -
one of our computers at work suddenly shut down. our boss panicked like it was the end of the world cause he knew we couldnt buy a new one and we desperately need the computer. when i came in he started telling me he's gonna pay me extra if i fix the computer
me: *checks cpu and finds out it was unplugged* u sure bout that?
him: hell yea, id rather pay u that buy a new one
*30 mins later*
me: *plugs it back in and pushes power button* its done
>> guess who's got extra money without any extra efforts yay11 -
Co-worker: hey, can you create an email?
Me: yeah, who needs one? There are no records indicating any new people starting for another two weeks.
Cw: if for Stan, he started today. Also he needs a computer set up.
Me: who the hell is Stan and why are there no records of this person?
Cw: he's new, he started today so we didn't need an email or computer before today.
Me: I get that they're new, but what happened to giving the IT department at least 3 days notice on new hires so I can make sure things get taken care of?
Cw: you know how it is around here, nobody gets notice for anything. So can you get that email and computer setup for me, he can't work without them.
Me: I get that we don't actually plan for anything around here and that 90% of my job is fixing that failure, but hiring someone isn't like a system failing, people don't just show up and say "I start today" they have to go through interviews and background checks and other stuff, someone besides this person knew they started today so I don't think it's too much to ask that I get an email when the offer is extended to the person so I can prepare a system.
Cw: well we interviewed him two weeks ago and he accepted the offer last week, he's here and waiting so just as soon as you can please.
Me: well here's an email, the computer is gonna have to wait, I have a lot going on today and I don't have any computers ready right now.
*Seriously tempted to make them wait till next week to cover the 3 days notice I've asked for 100 times*23 -
New setup is nearly finished 😍
Six active monitors right now ran by one laptop (three monitors including the laptop screen), one computer (also used as a server, two monitors) and one real rack server (one monitor).
Also bought a new switch and getting led strips tomorrow.
I already am in love with this baby 😍❤30 -
Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.
Is this what it's like to be smart?36 -

I wanted a computer for my Christmas. Must have been 1987 and I just have been about 8.
A few days before Xmas my aunt gave me a card with £5 in it. I asked my dad “dad, if I was getting a computer I could use the £5 to buy a game”
My dad explained to me that we couldn’t afford it and maybe next year.
Woke up the next morning to a shiny new Commodore 64 AND my own little tv.
Never been happier.2 -
First day on new job. Hardware guy comes to my office, says "Hi, here is your computer" (no eye contact) and leaves a pile of boxes on the floor.
A few hours later I finished building the computer from scratch lol.
Not sure if it was some kind of test or just him being weird 😂3 -

"I can't work, my new computer is so slow. Please make it faster!"
I can't and won't make your computer faster, because you bought it yourself eventhough you said I should send you an estimate for a new one.
And the fucking software you complain about being slow is none of ours and neither did we install it you crackhead.
By the hammer of Thor, don't ever fucking call me again you shitpiece!
Next time you ask me for an estimate, I will give you my stump two-sided axe through your head while laughing hysterically.1 -
I have my best moments but the first time I felt badass about computers was when I was at kindergarten.
There was one computer with one cool game with skateboard. I wanted to play but the other kids didn’t let me.
I thought that if it look like I fix the computer they will let me. I took me month or little more but I made shutdown bat(I didn’t really understood fully) and I added it to the game shortcut from usb.
One of the other kids started the game and the computer turned itself off. Hi tried a few times and then I offered to fix it, I created new shortcut replacing the “hacked” one and the game ran.
From that moment the computer and the game were always free for me.7 -

A friend bought a new PC and asked me to help him set it up. He said he got everything working except the CD drive. He said it took him forever just to figure out how to get the keyboard and mouse to work. "I mean, have you ever owned a computer where the keyboard and mouse had to plug into the monitor instead of the computer?"
He bought a desktop PC, and and all-in-one thinking it was a monitor. He had the HDMI going from the all-in-one to the desktop, and was trying to use the CD drive on the desktop.
Wish you could've seen his face when I unplugged the desktop computer and his "monitor" didn't shut off. He looked at the desktop, and then the all-in-one, and said, "Wait... How is it still on?"
He also had his old USB wifi plugged into the desktop thinking that's what was providing him with an internet connection.11 -
I've installed Ubuntu for her something like 2 years ago, because her Windows installation was fucked up. After that 2 years she aksed me to install her new computer and copy the personal documents from her old computer.
So I backed up all her personal stuff like photo's and so on and asked her if she would like me to install Ubuntu again. Then she said that she would love to get Ubuntu again, because it was much cleaner and easier than Windows 😁.
So, from now on, my mom is using Ubuntu instead of Windows. That makes me really proud of her.3 -
TL;DR Setup computer for new guy @ office, he got mad about software he was missing that we weren't told he needed, so he complained to the director above our department and got us in trouble.
I work for a small company, in which the I.S. Department is 8 people (Manager Included). We do everything from setting up computers and fixing printer problems to writing custom software for in-house use. Kind of a "Renaissance Department" if you will.
So a few weeks ago we were asked to set up a computer for a brand new user, meaning he would need email setup, a domain account, etc. We were also given a (very) small list of programs he would need to do his job. No problemo, took me 30 minutes, and he was good to go.
Last week I met the guy because he was training at the general office and his training computer lacked a few tools. Since I was called to remedy that situation, I introduced myself, told him if he ever had any problems to let me know and I would get him fixed up.
Now today, 5/5/2017, 15 seconds after walking into the door of the department, I am pulled aside by my boss and asked if I setup up the new guys desktop, to which I proudly replied yes. Come to find out the (very) small list of tools we were told he needed was incomplete, so he was missing stuff (how the fuck were we supposed to know that). So what does the new fuck do? HE COMPLAINS TO A DIRECTOR ABOVE OUR DEPARTMENT SAYING THE IT GUYS DIDN'T SETUP HIS COMPUTER PROPERLY! Like holy shit dude, why not send me a fucking email like you did before telling me you needed stuff? I would have GLADLY fucking helped. Now I hope your computer catches on fire. Or you get fired. I'll take either one.2 -
First thing every developer should do when buying a new computer is to download chrome using the built in downloader
1. Just click on start menu
2. Search for "chrome downloader"
3. Click on the downloader icon
4. From here it should be easy :)12 -

There are cybercrimes. That means you can be put to jail for performing certain actions with your computer. I’m taking about serious crimes like hacking crucial governmental servers but not about insulting people online. I’m talking about something that’ll make government chase you.
Every action at the computer could be done with keyboard only.
My face when there is finite sequence of keys that you press one by one and then become a criminal. And go to jail.
My face when if you put that sequence into script file, there is file that you double-click and instantly become criminal.
Press here to go to jail. The whole new level of abstraction.
Really makes me think.7 -
Installed Linux on my grandma's computer because she uses it only to browse internet so there was nothing new to learn for her other than how to shut it down which is dead simple and the win10 she had previously was slow as fuck. The thing used to be unusable, now it runs fine, LXDE for the win on slow machines3

Age 19, got a government sponsored chance to go to India to study. Was called to study for Law. But didn't like it. Decided I wanted to change to Computer Science cause that's what I was interested in. Go to India and apply for computer science course but not law despite Parents wanting me to do law because hey Lawyers job is a good status in society.
Got a spot in BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) . Totally new in programming. Started with C. Was freaked out with all the new things. Variables, comments, Pre processors files. All was new to me. Although the lecture tried her best, I couldn't understand her well because of language barrier. It was a mixture of Hindi and English.
Luckily she gave me a book to read, Let us C. That book helped me a ton. I realized I really liked programming. When summer holiday came I taught myself C++ . Then next summer Java. Then Android. Then some Web Development. That was last summer. But I kinda settled in Android and did some projects in it. Right now I am about to sit for my final exam. Then I will try my best to get an Internship or a job.10 -
I'm from the UK. My CS teacher took a dislike to me in junior high school, dissuading me from taking the classes I needed to take computer science at college. I ended up starting an economics major and then dropping out.
With the support of my family and friends I started over as a self taught as a developer.
I'm now a Tech Director in New York and love my job.5 -
Starting to work with a new senior designer in the remote office (red). Spent 4 days explaining to him that we need .png's in multiple sizes for the app, trying to teach him to use Zeplin to let us export them. Everything failed, his manager told him to just send us the .png's via slack ..... has he seen a computer before?11

So my in-laws got a new computer 😑
Yup you know where this is going. Ok so after I transferred all of their data set them all up etc.
They wanted to use "word" and could I set it up for free for them. I said no Microsoft office is not free you lost your license and disk and your old computer is trashed so the better choice would be Google services . So I explained the value of using Google drive, docs, sheets etc.. today and told them how much better it is everything would be on their Google drive so if I got hit by a bus they could get a new computer again and still have access to their data etc... So they said great and so I did.
Two weeks later... Can you set up word for us on our computer. Me annoyed at this point " sure no problem"
I made a shortcut on their desktop to Google docs. Them: oh boy this is great see John all you have to do is click on google docs to go to word! Thanks so much!

I've dealt with dusty computers, REALLY dusty computers, computers owned by smokers.
I've seen dead beetles and earwigs and spiders with their cobwebs in computers and dealt with them.
I've even seen live moth larvae wriggling about in a computer.
But never, have I ever had to deal with fluids. Until today.
I had to take apart a laptop that had been used as a toilet by a cat. It was still wet, but not warm.
And I had to try to get data off of it. But no, the urine was not compliant.
So, already pissed off customer was less happy about the fact that her data would still be a few days away from recovery to a new computer.
At least her frustration wasn't at us.undefined really i really do really really gross but cat pee though it got on everything i feel bad for her6 -
My new computer finally arrived. Now I'll be able to run Visual Studio (which my laptop couldn't while connected to my monitor at the same time). 👍14

Apple flips the bird to devs again...
So I go to release a new version of my app (critical updates and bug fixes from mgmt) and I had just updated my phone. Yeah, that was a fucking mistake.
“This version of Xcode is not compatible with the new version of iOS.”
Ok... update Xcode...
“The new version of Xcode is not compatible with your version of OSX”
WTF?! This version isn’t that old? Fine... update OSX. 5 hours later...
“Hey, just wanted to let you know that we decided to break every one of your web development tool setting and basically nothing works on your computer now, oh yeah, and we’re Apple so FUCK YOU.”8 -
So, I set up my computer after moving and settling in.
Turns out all the jostling killed the pump on my water cooler 🙁 It now sounds like an unmaintained soviet train at full speed, and starts burning up. Poor thing.
Guess it’s time to build a new one. Though parts aren’t exactly available right now...

My University distributes all worksheets over an online system. To access the files one has to download them each time first. So to get rid of all this annoying clicking in the browser, I just programmed a service, which logs onto the website ,crawls trough every folder, searches for new files and downloads them if they do not exist on my computer. Kind of proud as this is pretty much the first really useful program I developed lol8

So I bought myself some computer glasses after feeling uncomfortable looking at a screen with "bare" eyes (I don't wear corrective glasses).
But the other day, I lost them.
I looked for them everywhere, under each grain of dust I could find. They were nowhere to be found.
Reluctantly, I bought new ones. They arrived today, I unpack them, test them, and then do some flat cleaning. I lift some envelope and...
My first pair was sitting there, innocently.
Fuck me.7 -
I really really want to start working.
I have social anxiety, but my mom is really on my ass about bringing in money. I need some sort of job that I can do from home on my computer.
Something related to programming.. Administration.. Whatever. I don't mind having to learn something new to find work.
I have no formal qualifacations.
I don't care how easy or hard it is, as long as I can make at least $100/mo.20 -
One year for Christmas, my dad got me an old tower and installed Windows 98 on it. He also got two old-school PCI WiFi cards so that my "new" computer could access the Internet via his.
I started learning basic web development. I would convince my mom (an English teacher) to buy me books on programming all the time when she was getting her own books at the store.
Eventually, I got a book on Blitz Basic and started making my own video games.
Then GameMaker, Java, C/C++, and more web development and design happened until all the sudden, out of nowhere, I'm a computer scientist 😁
It's crazy how much we owe to our parents. And neither us nor them even realized what they were doing at the time!1 -
Finally D-Booted Ubuntu on my home computer.
Now I'm just waiting for the frantic texts from my wife during the work week telling me "I hate this new system, get it off our computer."

As some of you know I start at my new job on friday. I don't have a development or computer related job, so guess what my first task is?

Now I can absolutely relate to all the printer rants. -

New guy on the team, learning WPF.
He forgot to lock his computer when fetching coffee. I added a transform group in the main window and checked it in to Git. Locked the computer.
He comes back, furious at his computer for turning the application upside down.
Next two hours he was rebooting, flipping the screen, stressing, googling until I finally had to confess.
He uttered a strange sound of short burst of laughter concealed in a relief of not going insane.
It was a good day.
His pull request was rejected.2 -
Today a few friends got together and built my gfs new computer. I just watched because.... I'm a hardware n00b :p
Anyways, it took them about 2 hours building all the stuff together and now we're done installing Windows from via disc. The problem is, it's 2015 windows. So we're updating.
And it already takes more time to update windows than building the actual computer.
Nice!

My father-in-law wants me to buy a new computer for him. He's currently using an old Acer minitower running more malware than real software on shitty Windows Vista. He only uses Email (Outlook 2003), Facebook and Youtube. I'm gonna get him a MSI Cubi Intel N3700/4GB/120GB SSD with Linux Mint and problem solved. No more malware/virus calls from him. I'm installing Mint on Vbox right now and I'm loving it from second 0.16 -
Started a new job today... but I couldn't actually do anything because I had to wait for 4 hours to get an ID card (necessary for computer access because security) only to get told to come back tomorrow to try again. Off to a great start!!
At least my manager realized that this is fucked and filed a complaint against their department. -
It's a new semester and the introductory class for a General Ed is going on.
Prof: What do you want to be when you are done with engineering?
Me: I'd like to be in the security domain but I'm still not sure.
Prof: Then why are you doing Computer Science? You can just get a job as a security personnel.

I was like 4 at the time, it's one of my earliest memories.
My parents called me into the room with the brand new computer and my name was on the screen and they "yelled" at me for writing my name on the screen. I don't remember my reaction I assume crying and saying I didn't do it. And they just laughed and showed how they did it with ms paint and how I can play with paint too.4 -
I once worked at a small dev shop with a team of about 5. I was the lead but I was also the only backend developer. Since it was such a small company I also managed the Datacenter... which we had in our building. It was messy, but impressive. Although I seemed to be always stressed and felt like my job was always on the line... I do miss how excited I got when I learned something new. I was then able to talk to my boss about how excited I was to learn it and I can't wait to learn something new. I'm sad because I don't get that excited anymore. Now, I'm not really learning anything new, I'm just posting my skills as a developer. It really bums me out. I only wish that I had a degree in computer science so I can become a teacher and see my students get as excited as I was.4

They can't even hold their base clockspeed when doing compiling code. And they become extremely hot (worse then the last gen, which was already insane).
I know devs/creators/editors want the most powerful computer out there, but supporting something like this is just laughable.
Regards, disapointed customer who tested and returned the laptop after 2 days.16 -

Whenever someone leaves their computer unlocked (and if they're using Chrome/Chromium), one of us will install the Cenafy plugin. It has a 1 in 100 chance of redirecting you to a site that plays the John Cena theme any time you load a new page. Trouble is, the tune is so damn addictive I spend the rest of the day humming it.3

This happened when I finished highschool.
I was looking for a programming related career at university, and I had two options: Computer systems engineering or Software engineering. I commented this to my mom.
Me: Mom, this university offers Software engineering. The thing is that the campus is 1 hour from the city and it’s a new career, so I don’t know if it’s a good idea or not.
Mom: Why Software engineering? Don’t you want to be a developer?
Me: Yes, that’s why I was thinking of taking Software engineering
...
Mom: Is not “Software” what is inside the computer? (Inside the chasis on desktop computers)
I started laughing so hard 😂 and, of course, I ran away4 -
If this masterpiece came from my coworker I would smash his computer, burn his house, wipe his gene from poor mother earth. Luckily it came from my new programming student, so I find it adorable and make a post here.4

New guy started today. Nobody knew this. CPO forgot. There was no computer available. He was sent home after an hour of waiting in reception.12

We work in an office where we must lock our computer screens because our screens may have confidential information on them, plus you could do things as the person without taking any blame (ie sending an email).
Anyways anytime someone forgets to lock their screen we always prank them pretty hard. The greatest thing we ever did was in our latest release we had our managers buy us drinks at the pub. Well our managers left to go to the pub and one of them forgot to lock their computers. So we downloaded an image of the blue screen of death and made it full screen, unplugged his mouse and keyboard for added effect, and locked his computer. He came in the next Monday and couldn't log in because his keyboard wouldn't work. He actually called IT to bring him a new keyboard and mouse... then he unlocked his computer and freaked out with the IT guy because there was the blue screen of death. Needless to say he got a brand new computer as well as a new mouse and keyboard.
I'd call it a win win?1 -
A classmate's earphones once stopped working, I went to go look at it. After a bit of tinkering, I said, "The speakers on these are toast, you'll need a new pair." Then, some random kid grabbed the tablet mind you, and not the earphones, played in the settings, and said "Fixed." I then told them, "This is a hardware issue, not a software issue." What's worse? Some people said "So, software and hardware are the same thing."

Today I went to a computer store to buy laptop with my friend. When we were waiting for the store technicians to check the laptop for my friend, we found out that nearly all technicians (about 4, 5) of the computer store don't know how to enter BIOS setup for the laptop :/ How the fuck they become the store technicians if they don't fucking know how to access BIOS setup of a laptop? (one of them even suggested to use a screwdriver (wtf?) to access the BIOS the new laptop o.O)
Don't know what will they do with my friend's new laptop if I didn't tell them how to enter BIOS
(It's a Lenovo laptop, the combination to enter BIOS is fn+f2 and the store we bought the laptop is a large store in our city)3 -
I’m so fucking sick and tired of !devs telling me how simple a feature should be to implement.
Like motherfucker the most complicated thing you’ve ever done with a computer is attempt (and fail) at working with tables in Microsoft Word and you’re trying to tell me how long a new feature/K8s architecture/noSQL aggregation should take to implement?
A monitor cable wiggling loose paralyses you for hours but I’m supposed to bow down to your understanding of what is causing a bug?6 -
My friend: Got new job? What you do?
Me: Software Engineer.
My friend: oh great, can you check why my computer is so slow?
Me: ......3 -
About 8 years ago I had a choice, go developer or system administrator. I chose developer and never looked back.
Then I've spent the last week or so - on and off - perfecting a Boxstarter script to setup our Software Developer laptops, right down to the Visual Studio Code extensions and Visual Studio Code Standards.
Boot up a new computer, join it to the domain and start the script. It's therapeutic to watch.
I actually enjoyed it... am I a closet system administrator?2 -

This was the best hack when I was 11. My computer had a too small fan that was always on max speed, and thus really loud. To overcome this issue I wrapped a thick blanket around the entire computer case. A week later it broke down due to the obvious heating problem, and when it came back from service the repair technician just looked at me saying "Someone has had this computer fucked up intentionally, everything is melted from within. What have you done to it?!" Me being the piece of shit that I was just denied and got a brand new PC for free, nobody ever knew..

I can't get any work done at work... The potatoe they gave me for a laptop is 5 years old, Every day I was approx 2 hours (no joke) for it to power up, open up my visual studio solutions, connect to the VPN, and open my browsers.
Then my fucking shit computer loses connectivity with one of my 2 monitors every 15 min so I need close the lid, reopen it again so it "picks up the monitor" then wait another 5 min for my windows to respond.
Agh!!!!!
It's frustrating too cuz my boss ordered me a new computer 2 months ago. But cuz I work for corporate bozos it took them 2 months just to process/place the order for a new computer. So now I have to wait even longer just to have a functioning computer.6 -
Why it is so difficult to find an internship for a Computer Science Student?
I do have good resume, I am full of energy, I can spend a lot of time on solving problems and development. I can learn new things.
But everyone wants a intern who knows everything and can do miracle for them. No one is giving chance to ones who are in learning phase. Just try us and you will see the potential in us.
Been trying to get a good internship from last 3 months. 😔7 -
It’s really painful how non technical people think all technical stuff is the same.
The amount of times I’ve been brought in to help someone with a printer or WiFi network.
I didn’t do a computer science degree for this.
I’m also pretty sure my last two bosses think fixing the printer is the same as creating large scale systems.
My last boss wanted me to build a Vr chatbot despite spending the last few years building web servers and react/redux apps. I mean I can probably figure it out and it’ll be fun, but don’t think I’m gonna get this done in a week with all my other responsibilities too.
My new boss wants me to singlehandedly build a massive marketplace system that would probably take a team of ten, several years.
Fed up of being around non technical managers who don’t listen to me with my feedback.

Fuck Apple Two-Factor Authentication.
I am a developer with multiple accounts and this two-factor authentication is a fucking joke! I spoke to this idiot on the line who told me that I had to create an administrator on my computer to login to a developer account of mine. I hung up the phone and told her to "Fuck Off"
It's a fucking waste of time. Apple has not had an innovation since Steve Jobs died; each upgrade does nothing new compared with the last one. What's new things are there between 10.14 and 10.8??? Nothing. Except it's a lot fucking slower.7 -

Do not change username in win10.
Messes up ownership.
Ex) You have set your username as Loren. Used computer for a while. Installed bunch of programs.
Then you change your u.c to Ipsum. Some installed programs adapt to new u.c. others dont. New programs set the installation folder to either c://Loren or c://Ipsum making chaos.
Then the computer gets messed up.
...........
Opens Git Bash.
Ipsum-blahblah ~ git blahblah
Close it.

A customer brought in an older, beat-up machine and told us it wasn't booting. We noticed that his power supply was damaged, but checked it in for other diagnostics.
I found out he had a corrupted operating system, but with everything else on the computer, I didn't recommend fixing the computer.
Now, for reference, this is a Windows 7 computer with 10GB of RAM. But it also has a bent side-panel, the front-panel is hanging on by a thread, and it would also need the new power supply -- all of which would be over $200 USD.
When I finally relayed this info to him over the phone, we started talking about the system.
Him: So what do you think?
Me: I mean, this computer has some good specs, but with the damage, I wouldn't recommend repairing the computer. Now, this is your computer and you are more than welcome to tell me to shove it, but I'd recommend replacing it. We're at the breaking point of doing whatever you want to do, and it's your money that you're spending, but in my professional opinion, I don't think it's worth saving.
Him: Well, okay. I'll come in later and see what options I have6 -
I'm usually very careful with *everything* except today, I spilled half my water bottle on my personal laptop which I was using for interview prepping and while I had no plans to buy a new computer for the time being (not by choice lol). Here's a photo of my 5 year old boy.10

Seriously fuck this week4 -
My sister's laptop ate shit the other day and she ordered a new one. She got me thinking about my five year old rig, and how it was starting to show its age, so started half-heartedly pricing the stats I would want in a new machine on newegg and Amazon for fully assembled machines, and was always getting gouged or having to make some kind of sacrifice for another feature.
So after my wife responded to me trying to sound offhanded about buying a new computer by only rolling her eyes, but not actually raising any actual objection, I committed to the idea and started searching in earnest.
I realized that a fully assembled machine would always cost more, be underpowered for its price, be basically impossible to upgrade, be made of shitty parts, and always require some kind of compromise on my part.
Normally in the past, i would go to the barebones section on Pricewatch, order the basic stats I wanted, and fill it in myself after that. But it appears that Pricewatch might be dead. So, for the first time since probably 2002 or so, I'm building a computer in its entirety.
I'm really excited. Everything should be here by the middle of next week.2 -

I studied in a small school and every year we had computer classes, but most of the times, it gets cancelled or we just sit and browse and sometimes few of us don't even get a computer.
In that time, the only reason I was attached with the computer was due to games.
Our curriculum mentioned HTML, CSS, Access and Excel, which none of the teachers taught us for past 2 years. I wanted to learn all does, but gave up since no one cared about it.(please note that time, I didn't know even to use YouTube or W3schools to learn stuffs)
Then, a new student joined in our class and also a new computer ma'am joined our school. Both of them turned out to be really fun when it comes to learning computers.
She was active during last sessions and teach us HTML, CSS. I even started writing blogs which she taught. The most surprising part was she was super frank. She went beyond her duty, and taught me what Facebook is, how to use it, and opened an account for me which I am still using it, and she sent a friend request to herself. (In lab, past teachers would shout to students trying to open fb. All of them were super strict.)
She was kind and friendly, and during theory classes, the new student in our class would answer every single question. Then, somehow we both started sharing sits in computer class, and he will tell me answers and we both raise hands to answer the question. My teacher will also keep asking interesting questions which made me more inclined to computer science.
My story isn't related to learning a programming language or an algorithm, but it was the wave that brought me closer towards CS and after 2 years, I joined CS in University and till now, haven't look back and always thanked both of them, my respected ma'am and my dear friend, who inspired me and brought out my curiosity towards computers.
Note: My friend is doing Medical currently and when I teased him that I did CS and now, I know more than you and this time, I am gonna whisper in your ears if someone asks any question, to which he replied, I accept I am doing Medical, but I still love computers and know a hell lot about it.
My teacher got married and she also got a cute baby. We talk occasionally in fb and she is going great too.
I hope to meet both of them someday soon. -
As much fun it is to code and create new features for users. Take a break from the computer and spend time with real people.
A few years ago I would stay at work to get tasks done. While everyone in the office would go home I would stay and finish some task. After doing that for a few months my wife started to yell at me.
It made me realize that no matter how important a new feature, a bug or optimizing code is family and the relationships you have are more important.4 -
Saw new issue on jira. When look, they are like my computer is slow or I cannot any buttons in Excel.
For fuck sake, don't send stupid tickets, we already got stupid projects the company took from the others without consulting to the IT team.
There are about 600 tickets every month and most of them are issue because of their stupidity not the software (they never read the error message). And no we are not IT support, go ask those ppl for your computer issue.1 -
I ordered new computer by separate parts so I will have what I want. Choose to not be delivered by mail but pick it up by myself, so it will be faster. Boy I was wrong.
First of all one part was not available so I have to wait one week longer. Then after a week they say I can pick it up. But I was on vacation.
Finally I was back so I went pick it up. Came there and they said they can't find one part. It supposed to be there but they can't find it right now.
So now I am still waiting.4 -

Ok guys. I have a very important question to ask you.

Linux tip: if you're setting up a new computer w/ a fresh install of Linux or you got some new device you'd like to make Linux friends with, don't start by searching for drivers. Start with upgrading your kernel to the newest Mainline version you can. It's very likely it will bring your devices' support with it.
Damn I didn't think I'll like my P1 gen4 THIS much. Even better with a flavour of LMint!10 -
I got a little jaded at work (the normal officer politics stuff), so I started doing less work, and reaching out to recruiters.
My boss noticed I was having a go, reached out and offered a raise and a new computer. I told him I'd have to research market value for the raise.
In the mean time I got an offer for 50% more than what I'm making now. I'm heading to him today with my research in writing. Either way I'm getting that raise!7 -
Why do people always start new projects a month before the company closes for Christmas?
I told them how tired I am, plus they know I've just come out of final year computer science degree exams, and at the end of a massive code and infrastructure migration. My brain is absolute paste.7 -

Microsoft's new dialog messages in their software are pretty annoying. "Want to save your changes?". "Oops, something went wrong!". "Your PC ran into a problem it couldn't handle...".
I feel these messages are unprofessionally written and that they lower the bar for acceptable computer (and English) literacy in this day and age.
Its not like I think they should give a stack trace everytime something happens but just don't dumb it down any more!7 -

Don't feed the pigeons.
A cautionary tale.
When you feed the pigeons they keep coming back. They don't stop pestering you for help, and they don't ever listen to you.
I gave my father-in-law my old laptop, and installed the latest version of Office 2016 because I'm a nice guy.
Now, every week at family dinner there's something he needs me to help him with.
Mind you, his previous computer had Windows XP and the one I gave him had Windows 7. So it was quite the texh upgrade for him.
Except one of his octagenarian siblings wrote a family recipe book, and wrote it in Word Processor. (because Old People!) Well fuck of course it has pictures, clip art, special formatting, vertical and horizontal lines. It worked fine on XP because Word Processor was supported by XP.
The following is me explaining to him over the phone why his recipe book wouldn't load into Word. I was in his house picking up 2000 rounds of ammo for my and my wife's pistols (target practice) while he was out and about.
FIL: "It's the link on the desktop. It comes up in Word on the old computer but when I tried to put it on the new computer it wouldn't work. I used a thumb drive."
Me: "Okay well I tried to..."
FIL: "I don't know why it would work in Word on one computer and not the next."
Me: "Okay, well I clicked on the link to the file on your old desktop and it opened in Word Processor, not Word."
FIL: "No it opens in Word on the old computer, but it won't open on the new one."
Me: "It opens in Word Processor on the old computer, it won't open in Word on..."
FIL: "Which computer are you sitting at? The old one is on the left." (as if I wouldn't recognize the computer I had for three years and just gave him a month ago!)
Me: "The old one."
FIL: "Okay so it should open in Word on the old computer."
Me: "It won't. It will open in..."
FIL: "I was thinking maybe it had something to do with a screen that popped up when I logged in to the new computer. Something about antivirus software?"
Me: "It will open in Word Processor on your old computer, but it isn't formatted..."
FIL: "Yeah, it's a '.-w-p-s' file so it should work in Word."
Me: "Word Processor is a different program from Word. This opens in Word Processor."
(long silence)
FIL: "So which one do I have?"
Me: "You have Word Processor on the old computer."
FIL: "So how do I get Word Processor on the new computer?"
Me: "You don't. It is defunct software, it was discontinued ten years ago. You can try to get a converter online, but there's no guarantee it'll work."
FIL: "Alright, I'll be home in a few minutes. I'll take a look then."
This was at 10pm last night, and I'd been out all day since 7:30am. He still didn't believe me that the book was written in Word Processor until I showed him the different startup screen for Word Processor, where it says "Word Processor" plain as day.
I fed the pigeon. And it looks like there's more of this to come.3 -

I don't want new features or updates anymore. Almost every OS gets bloated with new features I don't want, while also breaking backwards compatibility and a working setup.
Phone? Apps not compatible anymore since update or just disappearing from the phone.
Computer? Often unstable updates, and since this has happened many times before I try to delay updates as long as possible but then caves in from the annoying update notifications.
Would love to get security updates, but come on, stop it with the bloat apps. Let me just uninstall the features I don't want and let me opt in instead. Make it possible to build extensions and plugins to customize behaviour. Why does software have to spoil like this?2 -
Just bought a laptop for my grandma. She is a very intelligent person, used to be an engineer and traveled across the globe, but she missed out on the computer revolution. What advice do you have for someone who has plenty of life experience but is completely new to the internet?9 -
I actually only started programming a little less than two years ago. I entered my freshman year of college as a mathematics major, but as time went on I ended up enjoying coding in C++ much more than trying to work out partial equations.
I have since become fascinated with many aspects of computer science, mainly web development and systems programming (I discovered Linux and the command line only a year ago and I'm practically in love). I've since been working for a couple fairly new startups with duties from developing a mobile native app in AngularJS/Ionic to migrating content to new servers and developing custom themes on WordPress. I have deep, deep aspirations of eventually being employed by Google as a Senior Software Dev (although I'd definitely prefer working for a company that would allow 100% remote work 😁). I've even finally began developing my own projects, ranging from a URL shortening service to a basic online encyclopedia.
I wanna spend the rest of my life doing this shit. Hell, I hope I die at my computer.1 -

TLDR filling disk space
Filling almost all c drive and buying more and more external storage.
When downloading new software, open file explorer -> my computer -> press f5 every 10 seconds to see your drive taking place. -
Getting a new laptop tomorrow, and was planing the process of setting it up.
Steps for new windows computer
1. Delete all included software... all of it.. call an exorcist if needed. Cast out the demons. Seriously, fuck you norton, and fuck you mcafee.
2.Use Edge to download ANY other browser.
3.edit system files to disable Edge, because fuck Edge.
4.install linux subsystem.
5.intall linux software like git, and use git to restore rc files.
6.party all night (code)7 -
So a while back I got a new Mac book pro for work, and it was nice for a while, until the keyboard broke, so I gave it to apple so that they would 'repair' it, and although, they gave me a new keyboard, the keys were still garbage, and a while later broke again... and this is the second time that I've had to spend a week without a computer because of shitty butterfly keys... 😢😢😢2

Ok...... first day in office at a new tech company
since 9am till now 15:42 (CAT) I haven't done anything besides sitting on my computer and googling shit
and everyone at the office is busy with their business and avoiding me5 -
I was wondering !
As a computer geek I would like to know everything from mathematics to programming , robotics and machine learning but as I go , new technologies appear and it's
just like an endless while loop!
I don't mean I wanna stop learning new things but just looking for a more effitient way for doing this!
Any idea about this?1 -
I used a 8 years old phone as a Wi-Fi adapter for my new computer, while I got the cable.
Not the hackiest thing ever but the hackiest I can think of now.2 -
I study Computer Science. At school we have a little project group that help others students in different fields with their computer problems.
A guy came and he says that he tried to removed the jack from the audio jack - he broke it for whatever reason - with a stick with hot glue on it's tip saying he saw this on Youtube. The glue got stuck in the jack... We had to buy a new headphone jack card for his laptop. -
Can I please rant? So my Acer Computer started misbehaving and turned my firewall off by itself a few weeks ago. After that, the dumb thing decided to revoke my admin rights, and since I was the ONLY admin, I have zilch admin privileges, can't download any apps, and can't make any new user profiles.
How in the living fu*k am I supposed to do my schoolwork and homework for school on a piece of sh*t computer I paid lots of money for? I have tried the built-in admin trick, and it did NOT work. My other user account I can NOT open, as Windows 10 states that "you need an app to open this".6 -
Sometimes I think that my computer is possessed.
The story goes like this (typical): adding a new feature creates a bug with something that worked perfectly until now. I find and solve the bug in a few minutes. Now the spooky part: with that sort of bug, even the code that worked up to now shouldn't have worked. But it did. Does someone knows a good Ghostbusters service?1 -
my wife is setting up her new phone that arrived today. maybe i am a bit jealous. on the other hand i dont know how using devrant, reddit and duckduckgo justifies a new phone. better save this for my dream computer.7
-
This is the worst possible thing that can happen, when you setup a new computer.
I live for about a decade on ubuntu. I got an invite for a LAN where games are being played that I cannot run with wine or are not ported to linux.
Fine I get an old harddrive and setup a fresh Windows 7. I have a little update script that takes care of updating and restarting.
BUT I CAN NOT DO ANY UPDATES.
As you can see in the picture the original Windows 7 installation disc that was part of my computer did not carry the matching NIC drivers.
A friend of mine gave me a spare WiFi dongle. That did not bring its drivers on the USB dongle but on disc that he lost.
WHY?! HOW?! This is not plug and play. This is a part that SHOULD be plug and play.
After I got an other WiFi dongle that was plug and play, I could finally download the right drivers.
Why can the Windows 7 disc that was part of the computer setup not contain the right drivers, but a ubuntu 12.04 live disc can?!

Past two years when I was in 7th grade, my computer teacher taught us the first programming language ie Python. At first, I just copied the syntax in my copy, and in the evening, I searched for it on YT
This introduced me to a new world of programming and I started learning it further3 -
We got new workstations today and the following happened:
Me: We got your new workstation but your screen doesn't have the right input to use it, so we'll exchange it too.
Her: No! I love that monitor!
Me: Well you won't be able to use the computer if you don't wanna change it.
Her: There has to be a different way!
Me: Okay I'm going to get some adapters and we'll try again.
After literally 30 minutes of searching I finally made it work.
VGA->DVI->HDMI->DisplayPort
That just felt so wrong.
Me: So it works now
Her: Thanks but why does it look so bad?
Me: It's because of the old monitor.
Her: Oh... *10 seconds silence* Then I'll get a new one.2 -
I am seeing a lot of people infuriated a lot about windows10 updates.
And I am just sitting here on win7 with disabled updates.
Waiting for some free time to fetch my new computer with ryzen, throwing some linux dist on it and virtualize the shit out of windows for gaming only.5 -
My biggest data loss and also contributed in me getting into computer stuff was when dad formatted the computer before I was able to take a backup, felt so bad at that time it had all my photos from school with friends.
So instead of crying in the corner and me not knowing they can be brought back, at least half of them, I started learning how computers work, how software work, what type of software is out there ...etc. Though that brought more work for dad having to format my mess every month of so XD
But I ended up learning a lot of new things. Then one programming class at school sent me into the dev world2 -
Family's out. Sunny Saturday. Summer time. ... ... got a SSD from company: stays home installing dev tools and what not just to check new speedy computer.

So all my friends keep calling me a negative person because I always correct them on how easily they can be hacked.
Friend: Hey (my name) I am going to buy a new computer and I will make you happy and not download illegal games on to it.
Me: That's a really good idea. Now shouldn't you also buy a virusscanner or at least make a full system back-up in case you get hacked.
Two days later
Friend: Yeah I got my new pc and can now finally play Kerbal Space Progran on it. It's stupid though that this dlc costs money so I downloaded it illegaly. But don't worry. I'll stop doing that from now on.
Another two days later I am spending my whole day trying to fix his computer because he downloaded a Trojan Horse that took over his computer and he had no virusscanner or back-up.
The problem is that I am 99 percent sure that such a thing is going to happen again and he'll be standing on my doorstep to fix it for him. Just let the doomsayer that is good with computers fix it and repeat the whole process all over again😒.7 -
had to cancel my presentation to a client today
apple is taking their sweet time to review my app.. im on week 2 right now...
No new computer for me yet this week...11 -
School just started. New computer teacher seems like a bitch, hopefully her skills justify her attitude.5

Hi. Im new to programmings on computer. Im learning css programming its so difficult. How long do i need to learn css programming so i move onto html programming ?12

I had a coworker that NEVER restarted his computer or installed updates of any kind. Any time he showed me some code I got distracted by the "new updates are available" popup that was always there in his IDE.
I can't even imagine the backlog of critical security updates that were waiting to be installed when we left after 3 years.3 -
We hired a new developer and our manager (that was not involved in the hiring process) is impressed he actually manages to boot up his computer.
He spend a full 3 days trying to install python, not even setting up our own applications.... Just python...3 -
Yay Google + leaked info!!
New old news again :P
Come on people if you want something to be safe you DO NOT I repeat DO NOT send it to someone else's computer. That's it. Fuck firewalls fuck av fuck it all.1 -
I am really thinking of switching my main computer over to linux. I’m getting pretty tired of windows bugs and I keep finding myself wanting to use linux commands. The only reason I haven’t switched is MS Office products and video games, but I suppose I could make a new windows image just for that and dual-boot...13

Moved to a totally new city to start a new job, thought it'll be amazing as the company is good. Came and saw a bunch of motherfuking smokers who smoke at the main gate of the office, the HR does not respond to my queries, doesn't have time to interact with a new recruit, and I have still got no company mail or email id. And oh, I have the entire GitHub access and the android code cloned on MY PERSONAL COMPUTER, the rights to which were given by the CTO himself.
Guess what, time to say bye to this shit. I'm moving back.3 -
Helped an elderly neighbour to fix his landline connection, since it broke down.
Somewhat an emergency, cause he don't have a mobile phone.
It seems, this got around and another neighbour asked if I could plug in his new printer and install the drivers.
Gosh, RTFM and don't buy hardware you can't handle.
No, I won't fix your computer. -
When the new head of the Computer Science program at our university comes to our help desk and needs help getting a Kali Linux box to connect to wifi... we have lost all hope (back story this guy is only head because he was the only one to take the job. he is a total tard... it's scary)2
-
Computer at work is almost as old as the first wheel and super slow... Will they let me get a new one... Nope.4
-
Because my new computer has had no internet connection yet, windows couldn't install drivers to display any resolution above 1024x768.
That looks silly on my 1920x1200 screen.5 -
As a teenager learning to code on a computer given by my parents
It hurts to see announcements like mobile development has some limitations on 32bit, or Github Desktop, Adobe XD and the new Unity only supports 64bit8 -
I did a backup of my computer on a new harddrive. I know it's on me for not checking this, but how difficult it could be for the software to check if there is enough space on the hd for the whole backup BEFORE starting it, instead of in the middle of it?? 😥
-
My computer just take fire. Hmm i think he dislike the new installation of windows :/
Well, be happy to have some other stuff for work !1 -
Worst dev experience: Started vim, could not escape, had to get a new computer... 😐
Just kidding, everything was good 😜 -
Back 2 school tomorrow (and a new one)... Hoping that computer class will be interesting and no shitty stuff6
-
So, since a few months, my school has a new shiny building,
but we are still not using it because the computers are not correctly set up.
Some idiot installed the wrong drivers for the Windows installation
and that's the reason some classes are still located in containers without a computer...3 -
i cant touch computer for two days, and it make me a strange feel. maybe its a good thing . through travel to relax myself.have a funny day and then start a new coding life😁.this holiday is a long time, after this travel .also have enough time to Learning some good framework.3

Thought getting a mechanical keyboard would be a good choice. Now i enjoy more using my laptop for coding than my main computer, because of the headache i get. Gotta get new keyboard.3

I got yet another scammer calling me, this time it's something wrong with my computer LOL calling from Microsoft.
I flat out said this:
OH so you're a scammer right? Because there is nothing wrong with my PC.
I know I was supposed to post the other number on 4chan, but where exactly would I do so? there are so many categories and I'm new to 4chan
The guy hung up immediately!
Here ya go: 05967175950 bastard deserves to go to jail scamming normal PC users out of their information!3 -
Not a whole lot. But when I was 9 I started trying to fix an old Compaq computer that my parents replaced. I never actually got it to work but I did tear it apart and put it back together. Eventually a friend's parent gave me a a Dell that didn't work. Figured out it just needed a new HDD. Around that time my dad (who is literally the textbook definition of technically challenged) got a old textbook about computer hardware from a friend of his that was a bit of a hobbyist. This was in maybe 2006. The book was from 1988. I don't remember the name but it's somewhere in my parents house still. I didn't get much out of the book. Time passed and I started building computers. For myself, the local library, my friends. I ended up going to college for business while building computers on the side. I was making pretty good money for the amount of time I put into it. Eventually I ended up switching careers. My parents didn't really help me get into software but they offered encouragement. And a book from 1988 about computer hardware... So that's something.
-
I just got a new computer, and obviously it comes with windows installed. But I go too used to Linux and now windows just feels weird.6

When you really need a new computer, but you have to pay tuition.
Laptop has pieces of plastic breaking off. Please not the screen!1 -
Does anyone know of a "formattable" ARM tablet that I can install whatever I want (maybe even dual boot), make upgrades... That is, that I can take advantage of the fact that it's a computer?
I'm a software developer and I'm tired of having to "buy a new gadget" just because the vendor doesn't want to update Android anymore.
Is there anything on the market that isn't expensive like Raspad or ugly like CutiePi?
NOTE: I live in Brazil, Pine does not deliver here.4 -
My office computer ran out of hard drive space so I asked for an upgrade.
Instead they gave me a brand new computer with awesome specs and a mid-top tier graphics card, so now all I want to do is play games.
Productivity may drop...2 -
One of the most annoying things I find about being in the field of Computer Science: you have to read thick book after thick book, just to stay ahead or on par with technology.
Oh, technology x came out. New item appears in to-do storyboard: "read book x". Oh, only 900 pages huh? Oh, deadline this week huh? There goes my weekend.
What's this? After having read book x, now I have to read book y and also read about design patterns again?
Sigh.17 -
Buying a brand new laptop, I think I'll save some money and get an i5 instead of an i7 and then turn around the next day and decide I hate money and I love having a computer that's more powerful than I need it to be.7
-
I just finished my second semester of computer programming. I then say to myself : "Let's use my new knowledge to make the program I worked on for fun two years ago better and more efficient!".
It was a bad idea. -
We recently hired a new head for one of our office districts and I am absolutely horrified how bad she is at using computers. It’s like she has never used a computer before!
Where do they get this guys and why do they hire them!?1 -
Rant but also !rant
When I got the new remote dev job, there was no laptop purchase involved. We were down a computer at home when a desktop died and there was a lot of sharing going on with only one laptop. So we spent more than we planned to for Christmas and bought a replacement for the dead desktop so I could have more use of one for my job.
Yesterday my new boss says "Oh, we should get you a new laptop. Here's some money."
Oh well, at least this way there is more to go around!3 -
Am I the only one getting PTSD from Word? I fell like every time I get a new computer It somehow gets even slower.4
-
Just moved my computer up to my new office... just to find that I'm suddenly having a driver issue (I think) that wasn't there before.
Basically my audio and mouse pointer hang for 1/10 of a second every few seconds.
The bad news is, it seems to disappear when I disable my wifi card, which I kinda need for my internet.. and I already have the latest drivers.8 -
me: you know you don't have to install all those common programs manually every time you get a new computer from IT, use Ninite.
college: oh I'll definitely check that out
*continues installing manually*1 -
I just went to a new barber for a haircut. Costed me $8. The barber earned $8 in 20 minutes and immediately went to cut another guy. This means the barber earns $24 per hour.
I, a software engineer with a computer science university degree working in IT tech field as a java backend software engineer on complex government software that sells gas & energy, get paid, and I will be exact to the cent: $3.75 per hour.
This means a barber earns 6.4 TIMES MORE per hour than I do as a software engineer with a computer science degree.
This also means that, it takes me 1 WHOLE DAY to earn as a software engineer with computer science degree, what the barber earns in 1 hour.
Therefore, this further means, after all of life expenses food bills rent taxes etc, that i can barely afford to go to barber. A barber for $8, is not very cheap for me as a software engineer with computer science degree.
I can not explain the utmost disrespect towards me and disappointment to be working as a software engineer with computer science degree.
I, as a software engineer with computer science degree, feel like I am used as an african wage slave to work extremely hard jobs for a below average wage. I am saddened and disgusted. This is shameful and must be illegal.
After all of what I've been through and everything I've seen, it turns out school was everything BUT the path to success. School was a path to failure... A path to eternal wage slave and poverty...14 -
I started a quest to learn a new keyboard layout. And of course the twist thing that pops up is dvorak.
Dvorak has a lot of mixed reviews though so after some more research I learned about Colemak.
For the past week I've been practicing a little each day on my computer and I switched my phone to Colemak.
But I'm doing pretty good I think for just a week. Wish me luck dev family.3 -
I don’t understand why people hate windows, especially windows 11??
Running Windows 11 on a Dell Latitude 3520 with an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, I was able to go from the computer completely shutdown to a new 3D unity project fully loaded and ready to go in only 1 minute and 25 seconds!!! That’s from completely shutdown!
I haven’t overclocked the PC or anything and have used half of the 465GB storage!20 -
I am again utilising flowcharts for the structuring of my computer programs and strongly recommend to all of you similar behaviour; this facilitates the process of programming, because new tasks can be easily added and removed, and errors can be quickly spotted.3
-
Does the computer push all dots up 1 line and create a new line, or just reset the current line once it reaches the end? *insert uglyfied thinking emoji*5

So... My brother got his computer when I was 6 years old... It was a 286 with the new 64mb HD and the screen had 16 gray scale color...
Latter it was given to me when my brother got his 486dx2 and I did a course in ms-dos and batch scripting.
That's it, lots of sfigher, puzzle bubble, Dina blast, wolfeinstein 3D...1 -
I've just finished installing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 on a new SSD installed on my wife's computer; it's so relaxing the fresh air of a new Linux distribution installed.3

Why am I incapable of studying human languages that I can use to communicate with people I genuinely want to talk to, but will use all of my spare time to learn a new computer language that I’ll never use!?1
-
Does any of you write notes about what you learn in your day to day job? I recently covered a colleague that went on vacation because the product was going to be shipped during his vacay and I was assigned to do some tweaks, since I am the only one on that team that also knows frontend apart from him. My job is computer vision and he is a frontend dev, so when I sat to take a look, I started to learn new tricks for frontend and I felt the need to write them down because when I go back to my routine, I will forget them since I won’t use them for computer vision. However, knowing frontend is always handy.. do you guys take notes on stuff you might not touch again but it’s useful to keep somewhere?4

I prefer starting from theory and then proceed with practicing. For example, to learn haskell and deeply understand it, I started by taking a course in category theory and I already have a degree in computer science and then start writing actual code. The same with JS. I started with theory for JIT compilers and studied how V8 works, how it utilizes event loops and how they are implemented in the kernel. Then I started experimenting with code and demos. It's a success path for me, that has worked every time with every new technology.2

I want to buy a new computer + display + speakers and now, I have to decide, whether to buy the one with a GTX 1060 3GB, a better display and better speakers, or the one with a GTX 1060 6GB, and not that good display and speakers.
Damn, my brain hurts...15 -
One of my supervisors once said: "A computer without mutable state is just a glorified electrical heater."
Meaning that at some level you'll need some mutability.
A processor/memory unit without mutability is not worth very much, except if you want to build a new one for every clock tick...3 -
I work for a tech company, centered on computer vision and video processing. I mean, we're not exactly the most Web centric company I grant you. That said I've just noticed a post on LinkedIn a couple of days ago celebrating our new start. The URL?

That starts http://localhost/ -
In school we mounted a USB receiver for a wireless mouse in the teachers computer... Since we had only 15 minutes left, heute quit the lesson since he couldnt get a new one in time...
The good old days -
Nothing quite like having to almost wrestle with IT to get a new computer that has more than 8gb of RAM in 2020
. Next time, I fear that the option they will give me for a new one includes Windows XP and 2GB of RAM and they will call it a "stallion" of a laptop.3 -
One hour to go and our plane will set off.
It wasn't a good idea to read Homo Faber before this flight.
My German Teacher says he's waiting for a new Film of the book. Instead of this "engineer" back in 1954, you should just a computer nerd xD
I wanna see that1 -
Well I used to play games at my Father’s computer, it was an old FPS online game really fun, I played it like everyday when I was 6 yo. Two years later the computer broke and we had to buy a new one, so my father insisted that we buy two computers, one for him to work and one for my own computer and assembled it myself. I thought myself to do it by a book and took me like 2 weeks to figure it out and assemble the whole thing. I love every minute of it.1
-
Somewhat new to Linux and tried to install it on my usb so I don't affect my computer. Installed and an error saying could not install bootloader and booting from that usb just shows a blinking cursor and trying to boot back to Windows shows grub rescue as it doesn't recognise something. Might have to experiment with changing from legacy BIOS to UEFI. But I just hope nothing has happened to my windows4
-
I hope people don't use container to workaround dependency issues. That's like buying a new computer because you don't know how to upgrade a tiny software. We should learn how to manage things properly, not wrapping shits up and pretend it is clean4
-
Story of my life - Feature creep, creeping featurism or featuritis is the ongoing expansion or addition of new features in a product, such as in computer software. These extra features go beyond the basic function of the product and can result in software bloat and over-complication rather than simple design.
-
I'm going to talk about ancient history. When I was getting started with computers, my dad got me a Radio Shack Tandy computer (yes, the ones you had to use a TV as a monitor). The damn thing was broken from the start, I'm not from the US, so returning it and getting a new one wasn't easy.
He managed to find some place to get it fixed, got me started with Basic, and here I am. -
when the you're waiting like a dog at the window for the postman to come and he still doesn't have your new computer parts😥2

I logged in a Remote Server, where Bi-Directional was disabled.Didn't allowed copy-paste and needed to upload a new Web app release.
Hack: just inserted usb flash drive in my computer and remote server recognised that as external.
Deployment completed!4 -
First of all... What I really like is computing. Wearing a language T-shirt and defending a framework as a New World Order activist is not me. What matters is to make the computer perform the task that I programmed, in a way that it is easy to maintain and that it executes quickly. User needs to like and operate fast. And the computer should be respected and not make it work its ass off just because it needs to load my fancy libraries. Whether the task will be done in C, C++, Go, PHP, Java, Ruby, VB, or whatever the fuck it is doesn't matter.
Fed up with people shipping a simple 2kb utility with 2GB of runtime dependencies.
IT is the only profession that advocates branding and specializes in a single tool. I've never seen an electrician who only uses a single brand screwdriver.
Fuck you fan boys.1 -
Paraphrased wise words from lecture by the one and only Donald Knuth:
If you want to learn something new, don't try to learn by explaining it to another human. Make a computer do it instead because then you'll have to truly understand how something works for all cases.1 -
My 7 years old computer broke down :(
Finally I have a good reason for buying a new computer. It will have twice as much RAM, SSD drive will be more than 4 times the size of the old one, processor will be 5 generations newer and the graphic card will have 3 times more video memory.17 -
er guys... I don’t think i can code anymore.
I was unable to do anything for like 2 weeks while i was away and it’s been a month since i got back and like... I’m blanking out big time. I sit and stare at my computer and everything but there is like 0 motivation/interest. I’m fairly new to it tbh so i thought this is was a good time to try new languages but still no.
Any ideas or advice please? It’s like come weird ass code block.3 -
Finally got around to some real video encoding work on my new computer but noticing it's not blazing fast...
And more work is still handled by the CPU... But I thought video processing is handled by the GPU, which seems to be barely used at all. I'm using Handbrake but I thought the whole point of dedicated GPU was for intensive graphics and video processing?6 -
Never used a mac computer before but I need a new laptop and I'm considering the option of getting a macbook. I use ubuntu so I would have a dualboot but I would really want to get into iOS development. Does anyone have experience with running Ubuntu on a macbook? Does it work well out of the box? Is there anything I'd need to think about?7

I spent all day at work writing new features and even fixing a few bugs on our ticketing system. I just pulled out the computer at home to continue working and realized I never pushed any of the code. 6 hours of work sitting in limbo all weekend now. I wanted to finish testing that code before starting on the next feature.
Do I start the next features and finish debugging everything on Monday or do I take the weekend off? -
So. I began college this year. I will be majoring in Computer Science. There first thing as a new student I did was signed up for the Computer Science Club and excited for the new adventure I asked, "What are we going to do?
President: "Nothing. We don't have any programmers or budget. But you can do whatever you want."
I don't know what I felt: maybe lost? a little dead inside?
What a disappointment.6 -
Everytime I get angry and frustrated in front of the computer, I simply take a deep breath and go buy a new icemat.2

I am getting my first apartment next Saturday, and it's awesome. And I was thinking of buying a great desktop computer because my laptop is getting old and I want a real desk with a real modern computer, also as a symbol of my new life coming. It would have costs me around 1300€, but guess what, I just spent that yesterday to pay the real estate agency, the deposit, and the first rent for that apartment 😭 I guess I'll have to wait again for that new pc...10
-
Soo Guys,
I am thinking of a new Laptop for developing abroad. Also because my PC is to much power crunching.
I first thought of an MacBook. Thanks to my human intelligence I have thrown away this idea.
I may want to use an surface pro (not the beefiest one, just like i5, 8gb RAM and 265ssd) or an laptop with Linux flash.
Because I am used to develop in Windows environment I might choose the surface. I really love Linux but as I progress in my (jet many, but not enough) languages I might stay at windows.
I wouldn't choose any HP or Lenovo laptop any more, only bad experience.
What do you guys think? Any other opinions?
Edit: I want to use it for:
- WebDevelopment
- Java Application Development
- C#/C Development
- Server Development
- Game Development
- Network Adminstration
- Server Administration
- Some Random Stuff6 -
Does anyone else have fortune set up to run every time you open a new terminal?
And people ask why I'm almost always smiling at my computer2 -
I once had a group member that didn't want to download Android Studio to keep his computer as new as possible. He wanted to code directly from github.3

Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -
Does this happen to you guys too?
Yesterday I was coding auth for node.js with help of tutorial (I'm pretty new to node.js). I was pretty sure that I understood how it works and I turned off my computer. Then when I was in bed ready to go to sleep I tried to go through the code in my head, but I completely forgot everything I wrote. I guess I was just copying the code without even noticing I didn't know how it works. Now I'm trying to learn it once more. -
Got a new idea in mind...by the time idea reaches pen and paper and computer ( I hear a voice back of my head...."Is that what you were think of, think of something NEW it's already implemented!")

I was 7 years old, and my mom’s friend brought me their old computer as a new year present. I was absolutely happy that day, because I wanted my own computer as far back as I can remember. I spent that evening exploring russian psychological (!) sex quiz (!!) with pictures (!!!) :D I found it on C:\
Actually no, there is an earlier memory. I was four, and I really wanted to mess around with my sis’ computer, it was some kind of holiday, maybe the new year as well. They won’t let me do it, and being an engineer, I took a rectangle-shaped candy box and made a “laptop” out of it. I remember drawing the screen, the icons and stuff. And plastic mold that actually handles candy, I turned upside down, and the candy cavities became sort of “buttons” I could press.2 -
If you have an old computer, here's what to do:
1. Find a tall building with a window, preferably on the top floor.
2. Throw your computer out of said window.
3. Enjoy your new computer!3 -
Just interested, I am self employed, have been for over 12 years. As a matter of self inflicted policy I buy a brand new (desktop) computer every 3 years. For those company people how often is your kit replenished?3
-
Just bought a new, cheap laptop for travel purposes.
It turns out I cannot start Windows 10 without giving Microsoft my phone number or an email. And the installator asks me if I agree to allow the apps to use „advertisement id”. It doesn’t ask if I like rough pegging.
Luckily, there’s a lot of temp e-mail solutions and I happen to have internet access on my other devices.
Then I have to spend 20 minutes uninstalling all the crap Asus preinstalled on MY computer. Seriously, when did I order „Asus Giftbox” or McAfee virus? The Asus-crap deinstalator displays a screen where I am asked to create an Asus account.
Question to apple funboys: is the experience the same when you buy a new Mac?12 -
I don't know what but our customers have put new terms in our contacts. That essentially make us liable if we don't take certain measure to protect the access to stuff.
To me that means I have to log out of my computer whenever I leave my seat. I was told its not necessary if I go to toilet. So I set the computer to require login after 15 min of not doing shit. Usually I remember that and log out manually so that's just precautions measure.
Today before I got lunch, I forgot. And my boss happened to notice my computer was on within that 15 min after I left.
I got a warning.
Fuck this shit. I now set th timer to 1 min.
Now I need to login again and again if I'm reading docs or article.
Fucking shit.2 -
Working code?
Or fake compiler?
Fix a problem?
Or buy a new computer?
Bring a flash drive?
Or bring a hard drive?
Use water cooling?
Or use an ice cube on top a processor and memory?
Drink some coffee?
Or eat a healthy breakfast?
Do you make hardware?
Or software?
These are the problems programmers face from old people as employers or relatives trying to find something to relate to. -
Need advice for buying VR capable PC or laptop.
Basically, I want to start developing VR applications and run VR games through Virtual Desktop or Air link through Oculus Quest 2, which I will buy next month (no, I don’t have money to buy Valve Index and invest in new stationary computer), but I’m not really sure which setup I should buy. I really don’t want to spend more than 800 € for a computer. Can anyone share their experience and computer parts bought or recommended?
Thanks in advance! 😊7 -
I just made the switch from Windows to MacOS.
After a couple of days working i couldnt believe how efficent ive become!
Even though i am pissed that there is no SD-Card reader. -
I was in the first grade and my dad worked at the government as a budget officer. We didn't have a computer at that time, though. So, my Dad let me use his PC at his office. My first interaction with computers, started with just one program, Microsoft Word, which Dad used most of his documents.
What I did to immerse myself with computers for the first time as a first-grader was by typing my name in Times New Roman and printed it with my dad's printer. I was very impressed of how a computer can do at that time.
And that sole program was my starting point of my fascination with computers and how it motivated me to learn more about computers. -
I thought I'd actually stick with a Ubuntu for once. But, Elementary OS looks so cool... Apparently it is also quite fast and lightweight. I might actually put on the work to transfer from Ubuntu. Ugh.. I'll at least try and wait till I get my new computer and try it there.....3

My company don't want to buy me a new computer: Im stuck with 2012 Dell. No kidding. And I am supposed to run 10+ docker containers all the time, plus java IDE.
Of course, I bought a new computer - by myself. Fuck my company. I don't have time for stupidity.3 -
Manager: we really need to get X live, do you think it's possible at the end of today.
Me: well everything pretty much works as it should but we still need to go over some details.
Manager: that's fine, just ship it we'll go over it on Monday.
Me: you got it
Message from manager at midnight: link X shouldn't open in a new tab!
Me: rolls eyes, opens computer :-/2 -
Just finished building a new Linux workstation that my company bought me! That Ryzen 2700X is just ridiculously fast! I'm not talking about irrelevant FPS benchmarks on some hip game...
I'm talking about compile time for the Linux kernel and buildroot!
Long story short, is about 5x my previous workstation with a Xeon 3.
Now I wanna get my hands on a 32 threadripper for my personal computer!! -
Hello. I have been doing IT for a very long time. And my computer is outdated. Where can I find money for a new computer?12
-
I haven't even turned on my old laptop for a year. It's about six years old and becoming sluggish with modern software. Now I want to participate in a workshop for Raspberry Pi that requires you to bring a computer.
I feel like I should get me a new laptop, and knowing myself I'd get something in the upper mid range that gives a good bang for the buck and is slightly more pricey than I originally intended.
But I think it would be a very ridiculous thing to do, because afterwards it would just stand there while I do everything on my stationary computer, tablet and phone.
Maybe I'll throw in some lightweight Linux distro and see how far it takes me.
And feel like I should get me a new laptop.4 -
Hey guys, if you are a member of the computer class in school, what would you do in the festival in which you introduce your class to others and do some interesting activities.
I need to answer this question in a school computer class new-person Interview so I would love to get your help!
For example, playing a game we made etc.
Or some mini game ideas4 -
So I decided to buy a new graphic card to fully enjoy my PC games. Once I set it up it sounded like the fans were working too hard,so I decided to open the computer case and clean inside.
And now it doesn't boot anymore. Nothing at all on the screens.
I don't know what I did, only the fans are turning when I press the power button. Even the led on the front of the case is not blinking anymore.
I have enjoyed my new graphic card during one hour all in all. Frustration is high.8 -
Just arrived my new computer. I bought it from an unknown company online and it's always ok.
Ty god of computer, i will sacrifice a floppy for you tonight.1 -
Fuck you mysql and your new fucked up 8.0 login. Fuck you 100 times. Now I need to restore my computer because of you.4

! a programming moment
My ah-ha moment was when i got to know that I could play metal slug on it.
I had gotten a CD consisting of neo geo ROMs on it
and that was one of my best moments in life.
I had never thought that i would have an arcade machine at home
I even invited some friends over and showed them that I had Metal Slug on my computer. -
Damn computer.
Hey guys!
Have a problem with my custom made desktop.
On games, after 5, 10, 20 minutes the PC freezes and I have to restart.
It's not the graphics card, but I think the CPU is overheating.
It's a new i5 8gen Hexacore, shouldn't be overheating.
Any tools I could use to diagnose what is happening?
Thanks6 -
Hello, i am new here and I saw a lot of great people with good advices, so here I am. I am new in sysadmin field and i need some advice from you. Now I watch CCNA videos and practice in packet tracer. What do you recomand? Videos/ programs/ OS . ( i am a computer science student).4

Is it possible to automate connecting new chromecast to wifi for the first time ?
I am interested in program that will detect new device and configure it.
It could also work by connecting new chromecast to computer usb port.
Anyone seen something like that ?3 -
A husband and wife are trying to set up a new password for their computer. The husband puts, “Mypenis,” and the wife falls on the ground laughing because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”

That feeling when sales tax from buying a new computer goes towards that Sublime Text license you've been putting off...

Starting a new job. The people are cool. They explain me the project. I open my computer and I’m not admin of it. Why it’s not automatic to add dev like admin of the machine. It’s fun to pass the first day of work waiting to learn the job. Please let me install my IDE and tools that I need to work with.10

Started applying to colleges this week for Computer Science! I'm pretty new to it, but I really like it so far and it seems super interesting.8

Hi!
Need to get some of your opinions about computer. I have always been using IBM/Lenovo or HP with Windows as operating system, due to work needs and policies. But, this weekend I purchased a new apple MacBook Air, and I want to know what you think about my choice. It is just for personal use, so I will continue to use my hp with win10 at work (needed for the erp system I'm consulting).
I choose MacBook Air as my personal computer because I think the hardware and chassi is a bit more premium to a pretty low cost, looking on hp or Lenovo with the same class of chassi and build is at least 150% more expensive. Let me know your comment :)2 -
What’s hot in theory and new developments in computer science ? I feel ai and vision appear to have stagnated a long time ago
Maybe it’s just because I got stuck with you people for no valid reason other than you people took over large sections of the USA to convert them into hamster wheels
Only for humans not the kind you shove up your own asses -
So, I did Ubuntu 18.04 updates today. Apparently doing so broke the sound on my computer. 18.04 is not new. It has been working fine for over 3 years and none of the other updates broke the sound. How do we get to 2022 with Linux being over 20 years old and it fucking breaks the sound on an update? I don't even see shit like this in Windows 10 any more.8

Im not “senior”, but I’m maybe middle level but anyway....
Learn good object oriented design!
Have a decent computer science background!
If you don’t know a certain framework or “tech”, google it and learn it quickly! Most of the “hot new techs” can be learned rather quickly by anyone who has a strong foundational understanding of programming and computer science. Its not sacred knowledge reserved to the chosen software prophets lol -
Hey devRanter? I want your opinion on the Surface as a programming laptop-ish. I need a new computer for travel and I have an hesitation between the Surface with a i5 and SSD 256GB vs a more classic laptop.
If I may ask for your favorite feature as well?8 -
Learn more about networking, revisit computer science fundamentals, memorise agile frameworks, practice DDD properly, learn about basic property and conveyancing law for my new job, get through 1 tech book every 2 weeks, revisit Linux as it's been a long time, learn the basics of developing and deploying with azure, learn terraform and docker, finally finish building my own product that has been going for 3 years now, continue learning about mobile development and build a mobile app for my new product.
Should be fine xD5 -
Im about to start my last semester in my degree.
I've this feeling of starting to learn a new technology alongside my course.
Lately I've been doing android dev using flutter
Any leads?
Am a Physics/computer science student by the way. -
Any gift recommendations. My birthday comes up in a few days and he asked what I wanted as a birthday gift(gifts are supposed to suprises but being able to choose is good still).
However I cannot ask for electronic gadgets. That knocks a lot of stuff of. The exception is that if something does not make me spend more time on the computer that is allowed. Kinda weird. For example I can ask for a printer or medical equipment like oximeters since that wont make me spend more time on the computer. Both of these examples were given by my father. I could ask for a new printer however we still have a printer but it is currently in the shop since it is not being used and the shops printer broke and is hell to replace since they need chips to verify toners and you need to get those chips separately from what my father told me and the shops printer should be repaired in a few months since lockdown was lifted a few days ago and I won't need to print something since everything is online and they don't need to show student projects yet.
Thia knocks a lot of hardware off since by definition if I am using hardware I still need to code it to do something which is more time on computer which is not allowed. So no fiddling with aurdino or rasberry pie or whatever is the most used hardware kit.
I can buy some course or a book to learn something but I already have problems with consistently learning c# with a good book which will lose value in November and that most topics I would like to learn like computer networking or some new language are practical which is more time on computer which is not allowed.
So the only thing I can buy are some books to enjoy reading for fun or some school books like a science digest book like Together with or the ultra popular maths reference book RD Sharma
So what things should I ask which comply with the rules my father has laid or just skip this thing1 -
Left the backplate for aircoolers in Canada, only brought the one for the water cooler I gave away here... So I'm patiently waiting for the replacement to come... 😇
Just kidding, I took the water cooler backplate off, got some twist ties, and strapped the new air cooler on. My computer hasn't caught fire yet. 😎 -
Finally back using my pc after a long time trying to buy a new battery for my UPS (I don't want to risk my computer during a power outage in this fucking country)

Every brand new computer should come with a manual named appendix A: how to install google chrome with internet explorer.
