Ranted about that porn work prank.
Forgot a joke the senior linux engineer pulled with me.
I came back from the toilet and sat down. Logged in. Cursor was on the left screen. Looked away and then back. Cursor was on the right screen.
*wait what? hmm must be my memory.*
*looks away and turns back*
*wait did that cursor just move.....?*
*damn what's up with me...?!?*
*turns around and looks back VERY quickly*
*cursor moves all over the screen*
*looks at front usb inputs*
*notices a wireless receiver*
*laughing from the corner where the senior linux engineer is sitting*

Thank you Java Visual VM... Apperently my program is so good that I now have 8 times my processing power...
That's very useful9 -
Just realized. The only use of port 80 (providing it runs something like NginX/Apache) is (or, should be anyways) redirecting users from a non-secure connection to a secure one.
Poor port 80 😖65 -
I JUST GOT THE JOB OFFER!!! They are paying me well and with full benefits and they are going to pay for extended training on top of that!!
This internship was one of my better decisions! :)7 -
When you login to a server through ssh for the first time with a specific domain or up address, you get a prompt asking to verify a signature with yes or no (on Linux at least).
That often goes well but sometimes when I already did that....:
ssh user@server
*types yes automatically and presses enter...........*

Started working on a pihole alternative a while ago.
I like pihole a lot but one of the features I am missing is to be able to define a list of mass surveillance related domains (Snowden leaks; PRISM program and such) and show statistics based on dns queries containing blacklisted domains, prases/words and surveillance-related domains/words (google/facebook/microsoft/apple etc).
Started working on one based on an existing (php based) dns server which is open source and slowly but surely developed something which worked.
Then, I found out that the php resolving function (dns resolving) uses the system default, which can, of course, be google's dns as well. Changing this would be ideal but while the documentation suggested that it could be done some way, it didn't work for me so I chose a library which can do it with specific dns servers (to use as external dns servers).
This library used a different way of showing the retrieved dns query results and really wasn't in for converting everything by hand so i kinda quit the project a while ago.
A few days ago I thought fuck it and started again.
Now have a working version based on the new dns resolving library and made some other good improvements.
For those who are wondering why I chose PHP for this: why the fuck not?
Happy happy happy.rant php fuck mass surveillance fuck microsoft fuck google dns server yes i love php fuck facebook dns18 -

FUCK YES! I FUCKING DID IT. I'M FUCKING RUNNING I3 ON LINUX ON MOTHER FLIPPING WINDOWS!!!
I'm sorry but I don't have anyone else to share this with. I feel so... empowered. If windows continues to support the wsl, who knows how far they will get. This makes windows so attractive. I still keep using debian on my desktop machine but my laptop isn't so underpowered in terms of software now that I'm figuring this stuff out.12 -
That feeling when you refactor that spaghetti mess into clean beautiful code that passes all tests flawlessly4

I just completed my first live soldering project...
Converted my son's mobile (dangly plush animals and music not cell phone) from using 4 X C batteries (LR14) to using an AC-DC transformer
I hardwired it at 6v and it worked, and I didn't burn myself, and I cut a little gap for the wire and it's really snug so the solder is under no tension.
I tinned the wires beforehand like I knew what I was doing and for once I didn't fuck it up!
Sorry, just had to tell someone. The wife's asleep and she just won't understand.6 -
Why The Fuck do you always have to say "Yes"?
I'm asking for a goddamn opinion. Give me an opinion.
But no, everything I say must be fucking gold 'cause it's always "yes", "you're right", "good idea", "I agree".
It's irritating as hell. It's "yes" even when I say something stupid on purpose.
Learn to say no, for fuck's sake.12 -

So I just finished my first 40 hour work week.
And just an hour ago I had a meeting.
In that meeting I said pretty much this:
"Your old system is rubbish, I want to make a new one"
"Also we can't use the old framework"
"Also it needs to be in a different language that nobody knows here"
And they went for it!
At this point I think I can sell anything to anyone.6 -
Google just emailed me to tell me that I should, "take action against suspicious apps that can access your data"... but the app in question was a Google Drive API token I made for a thing I am personally developing .-.6

A vendor gave us what is turning out to be a very stable storage appliance/software, so we're happy for that. But even so, disks fail. So we need an automated way to identify, troubleshoot, isolate, and begin ticketing against disk failures. Vendor promised us a nice REST API. That was six months ago. The temporary process of SSHing(as root) to every single appliance(60-200 per site, dozens of sites) to run vendor storage audit commands remains our go-to means of automation.7

The day I got hired because my (now) boss saw me showing off my super powers as a dev to some fellow students. He liked that I was so energetic.

The time has come. I need to write another backend service. I need to choose the tech stack.
PHP is not an option
NodeJS is too resource intensive and a callback hell.
Python is too slow + I dislike it for larger projects.
I fear doing a java backend because of the bad things I heard about some.....
I love c style languages, so Go would be perfect. But it has one thing I CAN'T STAND: NO SEMICOLONS! AAAAAGH! I wish I could get over it but I can not.
Help me, I can't choose......53 -

So I decided to positively tackle the negative energy surrounding me these past few days. I tried to be productive. I went overboard, of course. Where is the fun in normal?
I wrote down all the urgent tasks I must die-die finish. Anyone closed with Asians will know the severity of the die-die and must combo. I started with tasks I have to finish in 3 days. Then in a week. Then in 2 weeks. I ended up creating more than 25 cards across my respective Trello boards.
The tasks that come to me always need minimum 3,4 working hours. Literally. The furthest deadline I see is Oct 15. The tasks I counted is more than 25. No appointments nor meetings were counted yet. It is not impossible. If I finish 2 tasks per day, 14 days is enough to complete all. I might have to continuously work 2 whole weeks of course. But it is still fine, right? Right, guys? Right? It's doable. Right?
I won't get any unskippable appointment within this 2 weeks. Right?
I won't get new tasks to finish within this 2 weeks. Right?
I won't have to guide other people how to do their tasks within this 2 weeks. Right?
I won't have to work other people's tasks when they absent within this 2 weeks. Right?
I won't have to entertain any annoying client because customer service team can't deal within this 2 weeks. Right?
I won't have to do other personal tasks within this 2 weeks. Right? (Like helping with creating a wedding slideshow for a friend marrying on Oct 28)
My life is totally fine. Right?7 -
So my gas bill (for heating and warm water) is so low that my provider wants to send someone over to check the counter on it.
They can't put one and one together and take into account that my power bill is like double the amount they calculated. -
Worked as the hardware QA for a storage company. Some tests took a week to set up and several weeks of scripts to run through for IP-SAN certifications. CEO's little pet came downstairs and asked if I could tear down some of the raid configurations and "make all of the lights on the servers blink a lot". He had some clients he was working pretty hard.
Sure... your blinkin' lights just set this release back almost a month.3 -
I used to collect rubber ducks back in college. I was absolutely crazy about it and tried getting my hands on almost all different types available like the Punk duck, the Pirate duck, the Weed duck....and so on.
I met this girl who was into the same thing and we ended up banding together to create a sort of webpage where we'd write crazy and hilarious origin stories for each of these ducks. We'd go to great lengths to create ridiculous comic book style encounters between them and had a lot of fun doing it.
We dated for a while but it didn't last.3 -
A burden has been lifted off of me. The burden of social media. I hate it with every ounce of my soul(except twitter and devRant). The amount of time wasted it is unreal. Deleted my instagram last night and my snapchat this morning. It feels so good!!!!! Sure my classmates think I'm crazy but it is worth it. No negativity more time to focus, work and game. I think it is a huge win.6
-
Warning: this is not a rant. I'm too happy and excited to rant right now.
Today I "finished" my first webpage!!!
Wohooo!
It's the blog I'll use. It's currently offline for obvious reasons but I intend to put it out there when I have more confidence on my skills and some content to put in it. I only used django, html and css, and I really dig the looks of it. My gf liked it so it can't be that ugly.
I still have a lot to learn with django, and I will add a thing or two to this
webpage but now I feel confident enough to make the backbone of my first real project : a platform to ease essay writing for history students. It's something simple for students to keep track of their essays thesis and ideas but also the bibliography they'll use and the thesis and ideas they think each text they read for the essay has. I intend later to extend the functionality so it can store all the texts the user has used in some useful and atractive manner so they can keep track of everything they've read, share it and use it for later works.
I'm so fucking excited I can't fucking sleep (it's 3 am right now).13 -
Do you want to run the script? Yes, No, Print. Wait what?
What is the intention of 'print'? Will it print the question out for me? :D6 -
Oh so you have a merge conflict this weekend? The only time of the week I try not to think of ripping your nob off, tying a noose around your neck with it and drowning you in a well full of piranhas? Right, right...
How about you take that dick that you've been trying to locate since you were 5 and practice choking on it every day till you die just so you have enough experience to suck demon dongs in hell for eterniity! I seriously hope you die of cancer you fucking wankstain!
How about you go home and keep disappointing that whore of a wife of yours, you know that stinking pile of shit that you stick your dick in every two weeks?2 -
So i went back to school to retrain and enter the dev world. It's a 2 year school, half done in a classroom and half by working as an intern.
Working as an intern I've had to deal with some off-shore colleagues with plenty more experience than me. Like 5 years, 8 years etc.
I will probably rant every now and then about these guys, so that's the reason for the above short intro.
Today, one thing that just left me speechless. We have a standup robot on the team slack channel. Most epic answers ever, by this guy: "Yes".
I just have no words for this, so.. enjoy.
Oh, he updated his answers afterwards, but left the first one with "Nothing". Let me know if you guys wanna see the updated one too.
P.S. Hello Ranters!7 -

MESA 19.0 is better and better each day. Its just crazy tbh how good it is.
Linux 4.21 is going to give me huge boost also so yeah WIN WIN.
On mesa 19 and linux 4.21 and dual channel memory (Yeah i have single channel in notebook. Sad i know) then im in parity with windows. And sometimes even better. Muhahahaha4 -
Dont blame me for making Minecraft plugins, but holy shit i really hate stairs right now.
Im modifying some old code of mine to add extra features, and i just need to be able to rotate stairs 90, 180 and 270 degrees, then im past this bump.
Stairs get their direction based on a byte value that makes no fucking sense to me.
North = 3
West = 1
East = 0
South = 2
Ive been drawingto see if that made me go "oh like that", checking if the bits of each value had a system, and now im here.
Titshit.
I dont know who made it like this, but i really dont want to make some static switch or if/else statement to process this directional trash. I want it flexible.
If you spotted a system to the numbers, please mail me a rock, and then tell me how i fix this.13 -
You would think developers would have some intelligence...
*Side note: If you're building a sort of SDK, please for fucks sake never force me to use XCode, and make sure that it actually fucking compiles without me having to fix your code" -
Here in Spain instead of calling it CS we use the term "Informática", which is closer to the broader IT. Which means that hyped me enrolled in all the "Informática" courses since high school, only to be shot in the face by yet another "Let's learn PowerPoint" course. I honestly hate that.
I've been giving small courses (one week long) to kids at age 12-16 about real programming, starting from scratch to real-world arduino or Java, because that is what I hoped I would have found at their age.1 -
Here I go again, bitching about my job.
Might help though, I'm in a bleak and dark pit right now. Metaphorically, not actually.
I've had good times and bad times as a dev, same as anyone else doing pretty much anything else. Lately, it seems like there's a lot more bad than good though. I'm getting tired of the constant stupidity, bad communication, and frustration that comes with the territory, and I've been thinking of getting out of development altogether. Unfortunately it might be the only marketable skill I have. It could also be that I'm just a totally abrasive dickhead, and I'll inevitably be unhappy doing anything, but I can't be sure. Gotta account for the common denominator.
What I can be sure of is that in the last four months, my development team has gone from three people to just me, and very few people are applying to my company (we have a 1.8 rating on indeed last I checked, with some very illuminating reviews). Those that are applying end up rejecting whatever low ball offer the company makes them. We've gone through at least a couple of people in interviews so far.
Meanwhile, I'm the bottleneck through which every single piece of actual work passes, while the five non technical, non dev yes-man leeches in the dept sit on their asses and throw impossible timelines at me. That includes my boss. He doesn't back me up on anything. Ever. Still, I don't half ass anything. Intentionally. The work that I do is mostly quality.
The worst part is that it wasn't always like this. I absolutely loved this job when the workload was distributed, and I had friends to work with. I didn't even know about the bad reputation we seem to have, but I seem to have a gift for finding places like this. Tomorrow morning, I have a meeting about why my work has been slowing down. No idea if I'll be fired or not, but whatever. All projects will be at an indeterminate standstill if they cut me loose, so maybe that's "security"?
Anyone else been in and survived a situation like this? Did you stick it out or roll the dice on another job?5 -
Today my boss granted the intellij Ultimate license. It's a good day.
(even though eclipse isn't that bad I like intellij more)1 -
Wtf is this shit? First, I'm waiting over 30 minutes for this shitty piece of software to update, to then be presented with this. I'm kinda speechless. So Windows has just become even more bloated and shitty, or has it always been like this, but now, they just have to inform about it?5

Just got asked to fix a friend of my mom’s (whom I have met all of once) brother’s computer. 😒

welcome to devRantRant, where we rant about the types of rants we don't like rather than just ranting about our own lives and experiences
who cares if you dont like a rant? do you REALLY think anyone's gonna care if you rant about not liking it?7 -
I just fucked up!
So I was invited to an afterwork beer because some guy out of our project team left...
I was there early and run into the lead of HR for my current department... (I am still in apprenticeship, last year, so she is not <yet> responsible but if I want to stay she is the one who decides)
I said Hi, and she asks me to sit down.
After a while she asks me (out of the blue) If I want to stay!
I was surprised!!! I am considering multiple options atm .... I was not able to formulate a proper sentence all I could say was a simple "yes"...
... and with all the things going on in my head at this moment it might not have been the most convincing one....
I am screwed! Fuck I worked hard the past three years9 -

Client wants to containerise their app, set up another containerised app to handle a set of RSS to xml jobs (which should be kept separate as they're fucking huge and disgusting. Like 800mb xml files. Several of them. Which need to be parsed, corrected, looped over and to generate html) and then ship it all live... by next week.
I haven't used any containerisation tools before. I have no idea what I'm doing. Jesus take the wheel!3 -
Most of us have scary stories about professors that think that they know about what they are talking about when it comes to teaching comp sci subjects. Shit is so backwards in most parts of the world with teachers showing outdated or completely pointless tech.
A friend called me the other day asking for classic ASP help because it was being used in his web class. Another was asking me about flipping c cgi web scripting. Wtf are schools teaching? Having the drive to LEARN actuall useful topics that are relevant on the market is hard enough as it is...shouldn't schools help at least a little bit? I was lucky, we were thaught Java, Python, cpp, js, sql, html5, css3, php, ruby and we had classes for node (for those interested) and asp.net mvc. Those were RELEVANT and good classes and while some outdated tech was good the rest is just bullshit. Specially since most teachers have 0 market value as develpers...but hey!! Wtf do I know! Of course my word is shit against all them doctorate and master degrees.
Gimme a break. School can be great. But a lot of the leadership there is toxic af for our industry. And while I appreciate the effort in me being thaught modern languages (and thaught is a hard word since I already knew how to program way before going to school) i still remember a teacher taking points away from an assignment for not using switch statements in Python...despite my explaining that there was no such thing (you can go around it by using a lil technique using functions, its pretty cool..pero no mames)
Or what about the time I mentioned to a fellow student how he could use markup for having more control with his windows forms while the very same teacher contradicted me saying that shit was not possible. Or the guy at the school in which I work teaching intro to programming using fucking vba...fk man if you are going the BASIC route at least teach them b4j or something fuuuuck.
I had good teachers, but they were always cast asside by dptmnt heads as if they knew better. I just hate pendejo teachers I really do.
Chinguen a su madre, bola de babosos.rant remembering uni yes asshole gnu linux is a viable alternative i still love coding fuck bad teachers fk the system11 -

So a rant ago I was actually ranting because I couldn't think of how to do anything and such. Fair reminder I'm still kinda new so I decided to program small stuff to build me up so I can learn. AND I JUST MADE A PASSWORD GENERATOR ON MY FIRST TRY!!8

To my surprise I'm actually on target with my ongoing projects. Going to have a decent amount of time off this Christmas.1

Was testing an editor for writing technical documentation. Asked their support:
Hey ___, am I right in thinking you can't paste images directly from clipboard into a document?
Couple of hours later:
Hi ___, yes, you can add images by uploading them: <url>
The URL they provide has no examples of being able to paste images directly from the clipboard. provides Trying to figure out if this is yes-but-no or no-but-yes. -
Took me like an hour to finish the final assignment in a class where each project gets progressively harder. I was shocked, I was like “there’s no way it’s this easy. What did I do wrong”
Turns out the assignment I did was not even for marks, and the actual final assignment is completely different and MUCH more difficult.

I wanted to automate the install of a toolchain which had just a manual install script. Piped `yes` into the installer and it worked just fine. Only downside, it always installs to 'y' 😅

A question, because we currently discussing it at work:
We want to add a permission role system and we will have kind of fixed permission roles like a role without any permissions, a support role with some permissions and an admin role with all permissions. Should I add role entries in migrations?
The role system wouldn't be very generic anymore.
But we need e.g. a default role for new users and I don't know how to do it, without a fixed role in db.
Maybe you all have an opinion on it.2 -
About a month ago, one billion of Yahoo Accounts has been compromised. Today I received two emails from yahoo in my gmail accounts, they were saying that my yahoo password has been changed and my recovery email has been removed (+ a lot of warning emails of old accounts of forum and games that were receiving unknown accesses, but nvm). In the email which informed me about the recovery, I saw a link that would have allowed me to restore the old account, but before to click I thought "Wait! I had like 10 yahoo accounts. What account am I saving?" I check, I read, I read again, but nothing, no information about it in the text. Nevermind, there's a link. This link will be related to a specific account. Right? Wrong. I click, it sends me in a generic page. The link is mute. I attach a screenshot, you can see where the link points in the left-bottom corner. So now I know that one of my accounts has been hacked, I don't know WHICH account has been hacked and I'm not able to recover my account. Luckily it wasn't my main inbox!5

Well this is epic... The GitHub acquisition is so big, my dad just emailed an article to me about it...
He's a Dev but he's not usually up to date on tech news...
I'm sorta confused, I see a lot of about in Algo about this but didn't we know already like 2 days ago? -
I have discovered the power of YourKit. Really helped me track down the problem of a ton of threads and a slow application.

Only 1 thing FF Quantum is missing, the rendered network preview :( Sure it sends back the html which I can drop onto an about:blank but it's an extra step I'd really rather not have to do

On hold with a automated call system trying to speak to a rep:
"you are currently caller number 8, the estimated hold time is 1"1
