I use a lot of dev tools, but one of my favorites is the Linux screen utility. It's awesome to be able to keep shit running on servers whether my laptop stays connected tot he server or not. It's great for jobs that take a long time, can't get interrupted, etc.

One day I was facing some issue with Outlook and I raised a ticket to get it resolved. I got a call from the Service Desk lady after some time and it went this way:
Lady: Hi I'm calling from service desk, what is the problem?
Me: (I explained the problem).
Lady: Can you please share your screen and give me the control so that I can solve the issue?
Me: (I shared the screen and gave the control. She solved it!!)

I tried searching her FB profile with the help of her name, but there were too many results.
I started searching on Linked In instead, I found her profile this time. I was trying to enlarge the profile pic and suddenly a message popped up - it says
"I'll share my better picture with you on your outlook ID but you may please stop sharing your screen??"

I feel awkward when my boss is creeping behind. Of course, I can switch the screen in a hurry, but such behavior is suspicious, and sometimes I don’t notice him. So, in order to switch the screen without being suspected, I create a system that automatically recognizes that he is approaching to me and hides the screen.

I had this prepared in advance and executed on April 1st few years ago.
1. I wrote an app in Python that would autostart self & listen to UDP multicast and spam screen with message boxes once a special "magic" UDP broadcast kicks in. The app had minimum dependencies and used native libs for GUI to achieve this.
2. I posted this app source code on sprunge.us and remembered the short URL.
3. Once one of my coworkers left their PC unlocked, I opened their terminal and executed '$(wget -c sprunge.us/ASDF)' and closed the terminal as if nothing happened. I infected almost all machines this way.
4. On the April 1st I get to my office, open the terminal, send a magic UDP broadcast packet anf enjoy the chaos.

There are some extremely competent, blind developers where I work. They have a tool that read screen elements out loud to them.
At first it was chocking to see they work with the screen off. It makes total sense though, however this thought never crossed my mind before. Their headphones serve as screen to them, which is pretty cool.9 -

This is simultaneously the best and worst welcome dev screen I have ever seen. I totally want to get an Angular/React/Java tatoo on my neck, grow out my beard a bit, start drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon and drive a Volvo 240.

Just got a new monitor (HKC NB34C) and connected it to my PC (which didn't have a monitor at the time)

FUCK.... My laptops LED screen just got a dead px stripe.... And the bad thing is that it is allmost in the middle of the screen.... Oh and it is 60px in length and about 3 px in height!!! And no signs of physical damage to the screen.... so they just died!!!!

OBS is advertised as the expert's screen recording and streaming tool, every list on the internet makes it out to be some incredibly difficult program not recommended for newbies.
It's also the only linux screen recorder that works out of the box on Pipewire, records both microphone and system sounds and all configuration was to
1. select recording as my main use case in the setup wizard which is a very verbose English popup, then accept all defaults
2. add a new source, following the instructions written in the box which are also the only instructions on screen after application launch
3. set the output directory (optional) by going to File > Settings > Output > Recording Path, all of which were the first items I guessed. If I had not done this, it would've written everything to my home folder which is a bit dumb but not confusing at all
4. click Start Recording
5. click Stop Recording when done
Some newbie-oriented screen recorders have a more complicated setup procedure than this super advanced experts' tool don't touch without safety gloves and a degree in video engineering.11 -

I probably mirrored my phone screen to a random tv in the neighbourhood because as soon as my finger was about to touch the name of my tv, a random tv swooshed into it's place.
WHAT THE FUCK THERE IS NO FUCKING NEED FOR THIS FEATURE IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY ACCESS POINT AROUND, THERE WILL BE ONE IN 99% OF ALL POSSIBLE USE CASES.

Wanted to play a new game this WE.
It's quite demanding so decide to boot into Windows, because NVIDIA driver support.
Haven't booted Windows 10 in a month so I start early in the morning to do the updates.
After about 3 hours all Windows and steam updates were installed and I finally start the game.
I play for a couple of hours until suddenly - blue screen
I rebooted and was faced with another blue screen right after the Windows logo. Didn't even reach the login screen.
So here I am with a Windows install that is stuck in a boot - blue screen - boot - system repair - blue screen loop and a shitty gaming WE.

Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.

Here's an issue I've been having with my PC for the past year;
*gets blue screen of death* (every 5 mins)
*takes out my second pair of ram cards, blue screening stops*
*waits a day, puts cards back in, has no more problems for 1-2 weeks*
*gets more blue screens*
*repeats*
If I leave the cards out, the system NEVER has any issues.
But, I can't play games smoothly on 4gb of ram.

Had to refresh a group session in my program, spent 15 minutes looking at my phone, put my bare feet on my desk and did this thing where I lean back in my chair and stick both hands in my pants, possibly smelled one. Thats when I realized my camera was on the entire time. Was also the only other person on stage/presenting so my screen was directly next to the instructors face cam.

When I just started programming I aways added fake loading screens and hard-coded login screens to my c# applications because it looked cool..
But I also always added an invisible panel to the top right so whenever you click that it would bypass the login screen.
I had to do that because 1. I will forget that password after 2 seconds, 2. I got no time for that login screen.2 -

What aren't there any 2k 32 inch 144 Hz monitors out there that are: flat. I want to upgrade my home setup from a 24" setup, which is, you know, flat. Even back in the days of the CRT monstrosities I've spent a premium on getting a flat panel, as the outside curvature was a technical obstacle to overcome.
I don't understand the need to curve the display. It distorts the lines, hinders other people looking at your screen as you have to be in the right spot, and every camera records on a flat surface. Why should it be a good thing to go curved?

I know it's a battery, because I had the same issue some years ago when I replaced the died original one with a cheapo made by GreenCell. Boi that was fun - I saw my laptop do miraculous things I never would've thought of! Screen flickering was one of them. As soon as I replaced that turd with an original one all these magic powers went away.14 -

Someone should make an app which takes a screenshot of your laptop screen and sends it to your phone when you take a picture of your screen using the app. And immediately goes into crop mode. Not sure how to do it exactly.. It can rely on local wifi to send data with minimal lag, maybe have a QR code icon locked to the launcher, always visible on screen to detect it's your screen.

Stuck in writing some e2e tests for 15 hrs. Decided to say fuck it and go to bed only to wake up and solve the problem in 15 mins. Again sleep is the best debugger man 15 hrs is alot of hours staring at a damn screen.2

A few years back I was still using a CRT screen and I used to degauss it quite often as a result of having my speakers right next to it. Nowadays I use an LED screen but now I started getting this kind of "degaussing" effect where my vision shakes and waves and I get it quite randomly when looking at lights of different frequencies. (Like the Sun and my phone's screen) It only lasts like 2 seconds at most but I'm wondering if someone has the same problem as me and I would be quite interested to know if this has been caused by the CRT screen or something else.3

When i start an application, i WANT IT TO START. What i don’t want is your bullshit, custom, logo and splash screen infested piece of shit launcher to start up, with the only option of loading a project or file up, or worse than that, when the only option is to start the fucking application, which should have already happened.

So got my pixel 2 XL screen replaced after months of waiting on the part, took it to my usual repair guy and it was fixed within the hour, everything was all fine.

Do you usually spend some of your time learning new programming language/pattern/technology? I mean, I am not the type of person who does same thing over and over again, also like learning new things (I spend a lot of time per month studying new things), trying to get experience and trying new technics, but other side of me thinks that I need to be the best in one of them... Devrant bug: If the screen size is changed (by resizing app in multi-view) content disappear.
Apps should be able to cope with screen size changes during runtime - check android documentation, especially for Nougat.

I found Firefox to be a winner today. Chrome was flashing the screen in full screen mode when the subtitles would update for JoJo’s bizarre adventure. Firefox fixed it yayyy1

I have a pair of older TVs that contain data readouts. However, because the screens don't always update they are susceptible to screen burns. I'm looking for a screensaver or something that could move around on the screen but not completely make the data disappear. The current running thing we have are the Windows Bubbles screensaver. This allows us to still see the data but it freezes the screens. (No data update)
I need something that will save the screen but still allow the browsers to do their screen updates as usual. -

I’m loving the hugely enhanced privacy measures and the “screen time” feature which really breaks down your device usage into tangible data bites. It’s depressing to me when I see how often I pickup my phone, how often I’m on it, how many notifications an hour I get etc.
I’m really going to take advantage of these new tools to extremely minimise my phone usage. -
Just curious what done dev's would prefer screen wise for smart devices like watches and the like...
The long battery life of a colour e-ink display but have the muted colours.
Or an OLED screen with the high contrast and vibrancy, but with much lower battery?4 -

I hated the slight ghosting on VA; however I gotta say that VA did have one major advantage over both of my old and new IPS:
On a sunny day, the VA panel reflected literally NO light, so it was always readable. But both IPS's suffer from ambient light; the only way to work comfortable with them was to close curtains during the daytime ☀️5 -
Okay, legit.
I have protanopia (red color blindness) and red text on a screen is always difficult to focus my eyes on. It's like I have different focal points for the screen in general and red text. Is this just a me thing, or am I onto something?12 -
After coming back to my desk I cannot unlock my screen. So again I have to go to my Mac or even Windows to google my shitty Linux problem. Nothing particular turns up. So I switch to another tty and rummage through the process list. Kill some java that took 11GB of RAM and Firefox that always keeps some zombies. Nothing.
Grep the processes: oh let's nuke "light-locker". Bingo.
The only downside of this brutal unlock: I cannot lock the screen again. So in any case another reboot? Wasn't this the standard repair method of that other OS that should not be named?3 -
Anyone know of a free screen sharing application for Windows for mirroring my Android device. Vysor is ok but I don't want to pay for anything. Ive tried wireless mirroring but that is slow, so I prefer USB connection. I am looking for a free, no ad, program that is fast.3

Any iPhone app developers. desperately looking for a very basic app that controls iPad screen time. For example between the hours of 9pm and 9am the screen is locked and requires a passcode to use it. The passcode has to be different to the device passcode to be set by parent. Set for weekdays etc. a bit like you would set central heating. apps out there are way too involved and based on setting individual app time. Hope someone can do this, i guarantee it’ll sell. Keep it simple.1

Some long thoughts about state of desktop operating systems.
I always hated window management on desktop. There is basically no difference in usability between mobile and desktop in terms of application management. There is still finite amount of apps you can have in focus and you need to switch between them so they’re left from your screen.
What you end up is finite amount of screens you can connect into your computer or pounding switch context shortcut every other second.
We pushed computing so far and screen resolutions doubled from 1024x768 but the active desktop size is still the same.
For me adding additional display to laptop is not an option. What I love with remote work is that I can lay in my bed or on sofa or wherever I want to and write some code. My point is I don’t want to be stuck to my desk if I want to write / debug something.
Back to the desktop I think there is missing part of our state of desktop right now. The most we have are virtual desktops we can switch between but we can’t get parts of two desktops on same screen.
What I would love to test / develop is smooth infinite desktop with pinch and zoom - drag and drop navigation between my apps.
The problematic thing is determination of where user want’s to focus - is it fullscreen app or multiple apps on same screen and how to handle partially visible windows.
But I would love to test it. Maybe one day I switch to linux desktop just to try to implement the infinite desktop as an alternative to virtual desktops.
Maybe some rich frustrated kid would make it someday while I’m stuck at working my shit ass to pay for being able to have a decent life on this fucking planet…

When a new developer joins my friend's company, they have to work on such screen for trial period (3 months).
There is also no second screen.

I often see desk setups where there is a screen on the top of everything.
Isn't that really dangerous for the eyes? Afaik you should always look down when looking at a screen10 -
The little things are what makes you happy.
It was really annoying that screen doesn't work after an su. It makes sense, but typing "script /dev/null" everytime (and remember to write "exit" after it so bash history works again) is annoying.
So a little script to "/bin/scrn" with the following content made my life better:

Never worry about screen after su again! Tech life is great, isn't it?4 -

When I run a full screen app (a game) on my MacBook with an external monitor, how can I run the game on that monitor? It starts full screen on my MacBook's screen and can't be moved to the other screen. Well, I can move the 'window' (it's borderless) to the other desktop, but it immediately minimises to the dock. Opening the app again moves the window back to the first screen.
So in other words: how do I properly do display management in Wine?1 -

Any suggestions on how do I extend my screen to 2 external monitors with 1 HDMI out?
Tried video streaming from USB C out to HDMI in but that isn't working.
My single HDMI port supports upto 4k output so we should be able split and run upto 4 1920p monitors.
Not sure which adaptors would work for this.10 -

In the old XP days, if a colleague left their screen unlocked we'd take a screenshot of their desktop and set it as the desktop wallpaper. Then lock the screen and drag the unlock dialog off screen.
When they came back to their computer they would frantically click on everything not knowing why nothing would work. -

It has been a few months now
And I'm not going to a shop if I can do it myself a lot cheaper.
I'm actually looking into how to repair it and what stuff I need, so far I know about b7000 glue to keep I water resistant after the repair, of course some prying tools, maybe a hair dryer, and of course the screen itself, anything missing or am I good to go?
Naturally, im gonna post rant if my repair fails... -

I was on my way to buy a screen protector for my phone cause the one they put at the factory was peeling off and unfortunatly I dropped it just before arriving at the shop, fml well at least it's not that visible and it give me a reason to buy the new Huawei mate 20 pro when it's comming out -
Is it bad practice to write a line of code longer than the screen, meaning you need to scroll on the X? I've had one lecturer who hates it and one who doesn't give a shit and I'm not sure of the standard8
