Sales employee Bob wants a clickable blue button.
Bob tells product owner Karen about his unstoppable desire for clickable blue buttons.
Karen assigns points for potential and impact (how much does a blue button improve Bob's life, how many people like Bob desire blue buttons)
Karen asks the button team how hard it is to build a button. The button team compares the request to a reference button they've built before, and gives an ease score, with higher score being easier (inverse of scrum points).
These three scores are combined to give a priority score. The global buttonbacklog is sorted by priority.
Once every two weeks (a "sprint") the button team convenes, uses the ease scores to assign scrum points. Difficult tasks are broken up into smaller tasks, because there is a scrum point upper limit. They use the average of the last 5 sprints to calculate each developer's "velocity".
The sprint is filled with tasks, from the top of the global button backlog, up to the team's capacity as determined by velocity. Approximate due dates are assigned, Bob is a happy Bob.
What if boss Peter runs into the office screaming "OUR IMPORTANT CLIENT WANTS A FUCKING PINK BUTTON WHICH MAKES HEARTS APPEAR"?
Devs tell boss to shut the fuck up and talk to Karen. Karen has a carefully curated list of button building tasks sorted by priority, can sedate boss with valium so he calms the fuck down until he can make a case for the impact and potential of his pink button.
Karen might agree that Peter's pink button gets a higher priority than Bob's blue button.
But devs are nocturnal creatures, easily disturbed when approached by humans, their natural rhythms thrown out of balance.
So the sprint is "locked", and Peter's pink button appears at the top of the global backlog, from where it flows into the next sprint.
On rare occasions a sprint is broken open, for example when Karen realizes that all of the end users will commit suicide if they don't have a pink heart-spawning button.
In such an event, Peter must make Bob happy (because Bob is crying that his blue button is delayed). And Peter must make the button team of devs happy.
This usually leads to a ritual involving chocolate or even hardware gift certificates to restore balance to the dev ecosystem.23 -
I just found out that in our old GUI everything is derived from button :/
Table is a button

I love Asus Products but who thought it would be a good idea to have the POWER BUTTON right above the DAMN DELETE KEY!?!?!?!!?
I often press the FUCKING POWER BUTTON accidentally... GOD DAMMIT...21 -
A customer once wanted a button to sort a table column by name (alphabetically).
We told him, he just needed to click the column once.
The response:
C:"I still want that button!"
Just why...?7 -
This is the prototype of my "Build Button". I press the button and it executes a build process. Keyboard shortcuts weren't good enough for me.15

A couple of weeks ago, I asked the "brand manager" if he knew how to reset printers to their defaults before reconfiguring them, knowing full well that he did not. He assured me that he did. I smiled and let him leave.
He called me yesterday, frantic, because he didn't know how to reconfigure a printer that already had a password. After reminding him of the above, I told him how to put the printer in diagnostic mode and how to navigate the menus. Literally: "Turn the printer off, then hold down the feed paper button while turning the printer on. It will print out a bunch of diagnostics, and a menu at the bottom. Just follow the instructions at the bottom to use the menu"
Apparently following simple instructions is well outside of his abilities. After he spent five minutes fighting with it and complaining, I called him and walked him through powering the printer on while holding down the feed paper button. Terribly difficult.
The next step amounts to "hold down the feed paper button for more than 1 second." He spent ten minutes (ten!) on this unimaginably challenging step, and, frustrated at his inability to outsmart a simple button, he gave up completely.
He literally couldn't follow the instructions on the printout. I've attached a picture to show how ridiculous this is, and it saddens me terribly to report that I'm quite serious. he was literally unable to figure this out.
HE SPENT TEN MINUTES TRYING TO PUSH A BUTTON FOR >1 SECOND! TEN MINUTES!
That's what was too difficult for him! A button! With written instructions!
I can't even.
But the kicker?
Now he and the bossman want me to drive half an hour so I can push a button for ~1.2 seconds because they're utterly incapable.
I'm soo done.
So. done.7 -

Friend: (shows the action to me)

Today I have encountered some interesting piece of code:
In order to make a button disabled, the text of that button is assigned a grey color.
And in the click handler, there is a check if the color of the text of that button is grey, then return from it and do nothing.
That might be the ugliest hack that I had ever encountered 😆11 -

Two years ago, I developed an security app for Android as a school project. I didn't like teamwork at school (you know, you do all the work and everyone else is getting the same grade you receive, specially if you are the nerd of the class), actually I hated it, so I made it alone.
Its name was "Alex" and was a simple "panic button". You can configure two emergency emails and phone numbers (contacts only, not police) and, if you're in danger, you just have to press the button and the app is gonna send two messages/emails to your contacts: the first one, to tell where are you (GPS, only the name of the place) and that you're in problems. The second one with an audio/photo file of the situation.
Sounds like a great app, and I tested it few times. The reason I didn't continue with this is that I got my first job and I had not time, and that, tree or four months later, the government (of the city) launched a similar app. Less sophisticated, but I think it's still useful: "No estoy sola"(I'm not alone). I haven't tested it cause I don't trust on the authorities, I'd preffer to send my location to a friend through messenger app instead.
I don't know if I should re-work this app (I didn't released it, I just have the beta) or work on something else. I'm afraid that, if I release it, someone could die or get kidnapped because of a bug or something going wrong with the app :c What do you think?5 -
Some websites are a disgrace to the internet and I wish there was a service that terminates them on a daily basis.
Really though, can you do some simple research about your users and see what will make their life easy?
You put the most important button of your website in a place where the I have to scroll down and looks for it. The beginning of your page has a stock picture that has no meaning or relevance to the topic of your page. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
And your button, it doesn't even look like a fucking button. It looks like a normal text, which doesn't even react to hovering. At least change the cursor to pointer so that I can understand that it's a button.
Fuck you, your button and your useless stock picture.3 -

If you are teaching a newbie HTML and basic JS using ES6/ES2015 features, the "Hello World" app probably would be:
<!-- index.html -->
<html>
<body>
<div id='container'>
<h2> Enter a Name and Hit The Button</h2>
<input id='name'>
<button id='change-name'>Say Hello</button>
<h3 id='name-display'></h3>
</div>
<script type='module' src="./index.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
//index.js
import {sayHello} from './hello.js';
let displayArea = document.getElementById('name-display');
let input = document.getElementById('name');
let button = document.getElementById('change-name');
button.addEventListener('click', () => {
//displayArea.innerHTML = "Hello World"
displayArea.innerHTML = sayHello(input.value);
});
//hello.js
export const sayHello = (name='World') => {
return `Hello ${name}`;
};

When it takes 30 minutes to find a power button in lenovo idea pad.
Whose idea was it to put a power button in bottom left side????5 -
My brother came to me with his phone today to ask me if I could turn it on with my computer, because his power button is broken so I proceeded to attach it to my lappy and boot it with adb just to find out I can't do anything because he hasn't turned on USB debugging!
I managed to get into his recovery which helped nothing because in order to navigate in the menu the power button has to work
Uuuugh I hate this ...39 -
TL;DR: OMFG! Push the button already!
I've been away on paternity leave for quite some time now. Today is my first day at work since the end of July.
Just a couple of days after my paternity leave started, I was contacted by one of the managers because a tracking and analytics service I had made some months earlier had halted.
Now, I did warn them that the project was fragile and was running of an old box in my office. So they shouldn't be surprized if it came to a halt every now and then.
Well, so being on my paternity leave and all I didn't want to spend time fixing it. I had a child to look after. So I told the manager that the box probably just had shut down. I think there was a power outage the day before, so I probably thought it was the cause. So he probably just had to turn it back on. I also told him the admin u/p in case he needed to restart some services.
Today, the CEO enters my office telling me to get that thing fixed. Because that manager apparently couldn't find the power button.4 -

PM and UX designer talks.
About a feature on android with viewpager (swipeable views) and a header with buttons.
PM : We need a back button and a close button on the header.
UX : A customer will be confused by both, with the swipe too.
PM : Then we need a close button alone.
UX : Customer will search for back button and not everyone might swipe left.
PM : We need a back button alone.
UX : Customer might not know how to close the view. He can't keep going back back back.
PM : we don't need any buttons.
UX : Customer should find it easy to close or go back.

My pm requested me to estimate few tasks on a new project(single page app), the problem was that he was creator of these tasks, so we ended up with
- Create back button
- Create next button
- Create table with contents
... etc
As I prefer to take things literally I estimated each task as they literally should (5 min for adding buttons etc). So all tasks together were estimated for about 5h, while whole project was estimated for 100MD. After few talks and discussions we ended up with:
- Create back button
- Create back button logic
- Create next button
- Create next button logic
etc1 -

Looking for a second opinion/validation.
*Me: “Perhaps this simple and concise way to ensure the user doesn’t lose their data before they leave the page that requires non-zero yet minimal input from the user. (Read: ya gotta push a save/submit button)”
*Everyone else: Let’s pretend to read the user’s mind and perform relatively complicated functions behind the scenes, of which the user will most likely be unaware, that will add an undetermined amount of complexity to the development because we think it’s “where things are going,” by saving the value of a certain HTML element as it loses focus.
Edit: this is an exclusively-internally used app.4 -

Dear @dfox and @trogus
I'm writing this here because reporting such issue to GitHub doesn't seem to do it's justice.
It's been happening for like HALF A YEAR.
AND IT'S YET TO BE PATCHED.
WHY. WHEN I CLICK THE BACK BUTTON ON MY PIXEL 2 XL (ANDROID 9). ALWAYS CLOSES THE APP?!?!?
Yes, this is a rant about DevRant, I have no complaints other than this exact one.
It's been happening for way way WAY too long, and never been patched.
Please don't reply to me "why don't you report it on GitHub?" ITS BEEN REPORTED OK?!
I've always loved DevRant since I first joined, but this issue is preventing me from browsing it every time. It's jus irritating.
Please, @dfox and @trogus, try and for once take the time to try and fix it.
Thank you.5 -
css frameworks are a sign your ui/ux team is an empty bag of chips.
vuetify examples look like toys in their docs and work that way in prod. if you put any two vuetify components together on a page you basically dont have a website anymore. mx px are indicators that your styling abstraction is so bad that adding 8 resize shims to every single node on the dom is the correct solution to your visual spacing dilemma.
css offers so many powerful tools out of the box now, and it takes like a week to actually learn them. instead, we cloak all the functionality and expressiveness of modern css in black-box m a t e r i a l d e s i g n and pretend like obtuse blobs are a viable substitute for coherent, accessible, user-friendly ux.5 -

Dealing with React's setState and looking through all the possible lifecycle methods was so frustrating today.
It should have been a simple thing to disable a button, via the disabled prop, on click. I thought it would be enough to say
this.setState({ disableButton: true });
someSynchronousCode();
this.setState({ disableButton: false });
in the handler ... but it wasn't. The button would still be active for about a second after clicking. I tried several things like converting the synchronous code to a promise, trying componentDidUpdate with a comparison. It all failed. Interestingly enough removing the 2nd setState immediately disabled the button, though making it permanent.🙄
I've found a solution which seemed a bit hacky, changing the state back depending on another variable in the render method.
It seems so wrong, but it was the only solution I found after several hours.3 -

Linkedin can you please remove this No Thanks button from the mobile app. Its the second time I pressed it while I was actually trying to press the Back button, for a job opportunity message from a company I am interested in. 🤦♂️ -
Anyone here remembers DemonStar, the space shooter? Back when my aunt lived in our home (i was around three or four years old then, i think), we used to play single player together. She would press arrow button and i would press Ctrl button.

I just animating third type of button. Now i have.
.link.type-button - standard button with default, primary and destruct color, small, default and large size, animation on it's back, selectable icon.
.link.type-roll - wierd type of button, with only icon visible and text on hover with some wierd shit animation, selectable icon ofcourse. Various sizes and colors as well.
.link.type-more - More or less static link with right arrow and ofcourse animation on hover.
So one site has three types of buttons with various properties.
And thinking about how overengeneered JS world is.
Fuck you JS world.6 -
I can't count likes form my database for an specific post. I made a function that will count all the like by "post.id". It shows the like on the web page when I clicked on like button and it disappears when I refresh the browser. but likes are still remaining in the database but it won't appear on the webpage.
Here are the flask code:
def like_count(post_id):
if request.form.get('like') != None:
if (Like.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).all())==[]:
return 0
else:
return Like.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).count()
else:
return 0
def dislike_count(post_id):
if request.form.get('dislike') != None:
if (Dislike.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).all())==[]:
return 0
else:
return Dislike.query.filter_by(post_id=post_id).count()
else:
return 0
Here are the html code:
<!--dislike-->
<form method="POST" action="">
<input name="dislike" value="1" class="input-style" >
<input value="{{post.id}}" name="post_id" class="input-style">
<button class="fas fa-thumbs-down" class="like-button" >
<div class="like-count" >
{{dislike_count(post.id)}}
</div>
</button>
</form>
<!--like-->
<form method="POST" action="" >
<input name="like" value="1" class="input-style" >
<input name="post_id" value="{{post.id}}" class="input-style" >
<button class="fas fa-thumbs-up" class="like-button" >
<div class="like-count" >
{{like_count(post.id)}}
</div>
</button>
</form>8 -

I just discovered there's a "subscribe to user's rants" button hidden in the options of a rant or profile. Why is this not a big, accessible, visible button?
So many times I lost good rants from a few folks around here (only to discover them weeks later) and wished there was a follow functionality in the app. Turns out there is, it's just hidden. WHY?2 -
Dear great ux lords at ms azure devops, could you make the whole freaking button clickable instead of just the text inside of the button?1

Having only recently upgraded my mouse to something with more buttons I realise I've been seriously missing out. A button to copy text, a button to paste and a button to take a screenshot has just saved me precious time.1
