If I have headphones in
and I'm intentionally away from everyone
and it looks like I'm working
and you want to talk to me
Here's some advice:
DON'T FUCKING TALK TO ME.
If you're curious why, I've compiled a list of points:
1) DON'T
2) FUCKING
3) TALK
4) TO
5) ME
Also, see Fig. 1 below:
(Fig. 1)
| DONT
| FUCKING

| TALK
| TO

Don't fucking talk to me!26 -
Worst dev advice?
My first manager said, "You're young and single. You don't have a family. You should spend all of your waking hours on work."
Me thinking, "I understand the importance of extra effort the first few years but I do have a life. One that I intend to enjoy."15 -
Client: I want all cookies blocked on my computer.
Me: Are you sure? Some things won't work if i do that. Like using online banking.
Client: I don't use it, so it's fine.
*Two weeks pass. I have to come back and see three bankcards laying on the table*
Client: I'm not able to use online banking anymore. Can you fix it?
Come on! You pay me to give advice and help out with problems. The least you could do is listen.10 -
Dentist: Did you follow the advice I gave you in our last sitting ?
Me: Sure did!
Dentist: Great, let's see!
*Inspects teeth*
Dentist: Your teeth look horrible.
Me: I did exactly what you advised me to do!
Dentist: You brushed your teeth twice a day every day?
Me: Twice???
Dentist: Yes, I told you to brush before bed and in the morning!
Me: That's exactly what I did! Sometimes it was hard to fulfill both conditions at the same time, so I had to brush twice, but I managed to do it on the other days!
Dentist: Fucking programmers.2 -
"Don't be the smartest person in the room. If you are, you're in the wrong room."
This piece of advice really holds true and continues to push me into fulfilling and challenging positions in my career.6 -
Friend : This is our logo for the site you are building for us.
Me: Wtf!! This is just a picture with text on it, do you have copyright of this picture?
Friend : who cares, we found it on google and we liked it.
Me: It may create trouble later
Friend: nothing...Just us it, we don’t have $150 for logo design
Me:🧐
After few weeks
Friend: Hey best, we have problem with logo, there is this guy who keep emailing us about copyright, any advice
Me: you know the solution the $1501 -
Mutual on Tumblr: So what distro do you use?
Me: Zorin OS. I really like it. I'm even considering deleting my windows partition.
Mutual: Really? That doesn't count as a proper distro. Real Linux users only use Zorin on a virtual machine. Use Mint or Kali or something.
Me: It counts. It's not different from any other distro.
Mutual: It's okay to be noob. You can always ask me for advice.
Me: But I've been using Linux for about two years. I don't consider myself a noob.
Mutual: If you're using a shitty distro, then you're a noob.
Me: Okay. Thanks for the advice. (In my mind: fuck off already.)
I don't understand the issue with Zorin OS. Is it because it looks like windows or something? :/26 -
Before you start to code write your ideas on a piece of paper ... Everytime I beginn a project I start with coding, this advice is to difficult for me 😂5
-
This is actually an advice given to me:
"Only ever release your code on a Friday, preferably after 6pm. If you're not confident enough to do that, your code is not ready."
Who says dev doesn't require courage.2 -
First time dealing with front and backend web programming. Any advice or tutorials that can help me get on the track with good MVC? I hate having a giant discombobulated mess of an index.php file19
-
The Micromanagement God. The guy would come to the office 64 times a day, go behind my desk, stare at the monitors for a while and ask what am I working on.
He would sometimes ask for explanation of how something works because he never saw it before and then give me advice on how to use that thing he never saw before.2 -
Worst advice?
That must have been that time my boss asked me how to restart rsyslog (Windowsguy and I was on vacation)
- "just do rm -r /var/log haha"
And ONE SECOND LATER I SENT THIS
- "haha jk dont"
Waiting a minute and I get this:
- "well that did not work"
Damnit8 -
Small Me(m): learning some basic code
Senior Dev(d): *walks by and sees my code*
m: hey got any advice on this?
d: learn to use regular expression. *walks away*
m: 30min later... *Mind blown*
And coffee of course ☕2 -
The rants I read here make me want to be a better developer. I started writing tests, linting code and ensuring 'quality code' because of the devrant community. Being a self taught developer, you never really have anyone to thank. But today I would like to appriciate you all for the rants, comments and advice that make us developers become better at our craft.2

Week 66 has taught me that I must actually be quite privileged!
I can't recall any bad advice given to me. It's either been good, or I completely forgot about it.
Or on the other hand, it's all been bad advice and I'm a rubbish developer...3 -
My neighbor(He is 14 I think) pitched this to me and wanted advice since he was going try to participate in the Google science fair.
Him:"A robot that gives you medical advice. You just tell it your symptoms and voila! You've got your diagnosis. No doctor required."
Me: "How are you going to decide what disease the user has?"
Him:" I'm just going to write an if-else ladder statement. I've already got some of the data from this site called WebMD. It's amazing."
Me: "Go with something simple. What you're suggesting won't work out."
He told me I didn't have "Vision".
His ditched his project last week.18 -
I just wanted to say that wk61 came just at the right point in time ^^
My school threw me out a couple of days ago and now I have nothing, so I'm thankful for all of you who're giving advice for job hunting
You guys are awesome! :)5 -
Why the fuck am I - who never had a girlfriend in his life - the person my friends come to to get relationship advice?
Well, I can tell them what no to do...12 -
Thank you guys. Especially thank you @linuxxx. Because of your help, patience and advice I accomplished to setup and manage my new VPS on my own. I even moved to linux on my local machine.
It has been a long path. But I feel confident now. Thank you for growing that feeling in me.6 -
LinkedIn feels like:
- be bombarded with recruiters messaging you
- people you don't know bragging about joining a company
- more people you don't know sharing useless advice for tons of corporate crap
Is just me or anyone feels the same?13 -
I am like the weakest programmer at my job. I wanna improve and get better. Understanding how to write good unit test to reading code. Damn it. I just wanna be better.9
-
Word of advice: never buy the UMIDICI C Note 2.
Bought it myself and it's an utter piece of garbage.
Just bought another phone which runs stock android 7 and Lineage OS might be installable.
Also it can be rooted, good enough for me!9 -
My wife saw me posting on Dev Rant raging about my boss, and suggested I ought to use a different user name instead of my usual one... considering he spends all day using social media I think she might be right... passed the advice on to some friends we are all now paranoid and have new accounts. <32
-
Is it strange that I'm getting more constructive advice from the Devrant community than the co-workers around me?
No lie, I discovered gistboxapp, vue.js, hacker noon and a bunch of other cool stuff through here.4 -
print('I love U world !!')
I'm back !! After being fired from my job (read my prev rants) , after a week they called me and told me that I can return! (If only I promise that I'll control my curiosity and i'll never make the same mistake ever again)
It is just like a dream !!
I'm really glad that I listened to your advice and didn't do anything stupid :)7 -
Life at work these days:
Manager: we’re not getting enough done
My calendar: 1/3 week filled with scheduled meetings
Manager: we need to use ChatGPT intensively. We'll go a lot faster.
Me using ChatGPT to get it to write an automation script: 2 hours wasted with no success
Me starting again from scratch to write the script: 15 minutes to achieve the desired result.
Thanks for your advice boss8 -
Let me share a piece of advice to entry level devs that are getting ready for job interviews that I wish someone gave to me when I was first looking for work straight out of school. Do not focus making yourself look good to this company by trying to make your resume flashy or trying to oversell yourself. Although its important to present yourself sure, but it should not be the foundation for you to base your interview goals around. Rather focus on the company itself. Find out whether the company itself uses modern technology, practices and upholds to project management and the software development cycle, find out how they work, communicate and develop as a team. Simply put focus on whether they are worth working for instead of looking like your worth being hired. Can they collaborate, communicate and solve problems efficiently. Otherwise you may end up getting hired and hating your job. Just a thought and some advice on my own experiences. Hope it helps someone.3

Yesterday night I was driving by train. And I overheard a random dude how he is studying computer science. Drunk me decided to give him some advice, so I told to use github. Instead of using ubuntu he should try out arch or gentoo, to learn how all parts work together. But because I was pretty drunk, I probably confused him more, then anything else. Oops.11

Worst advice about programming...
My discussion with my company sistem admin :
Me : you must always think that users are dumb and will make mistakes (like putting letters when db saves as number)
He : users must learn, if they make such mistakes its their fault.
My claim: I learned early in school to always assume that users are stupid and will always find bugs and exploits by coincidence. So protect your code from bad imput8 -
I managed to get a new dell XPS 15 with uhd display, 16GB RAM and a nice i7 for work.
My boss previously asked for advice from me for which laptop to get, he ignored my advice which was for him to get a nice surface book pro for his excel activities
Instead he got a shitty Mac book air (who are these people who like the airs?). As his cto I was upset he didn’t trust his tech guy to choose him a powerful laptop that was useful.
Anyway, he saw my new laptop this week and a contractor was admiring it. My boss then said why didn’t you tell me to get this one? (The surface pro is the same spec but with tablet and pen ability).
What a dick. I’m still mad he didn’t listen to me. And now he is saying I never told him.
Macs are shit btw. This dell is great and I don’t know how we lived without uhd screens before.14 -
People telling me what to do. I am 19 yo. I havent got into university, i have passed the bachelor's degree exam with 83.5% in computer science, i am employed in web development and i like it. Im not even thinking about going to university for now, not even getting a driving license, the stress is too big for now. I love traveling by bike. I enjoy listening to heavy metal and hard rock and I love peace more and i enjoy talking with people.
The biggest hurdle is people who tell me "do that because everyone does". And I'm not talking about my mom. She supported me everytime. I'm talking about people who doesn't belive in someone's knowledge and bothers the others. It's good if you give me advice and talk with me about it, but never be strict about that advice.6 -
!rant !!questionTime
So I’m currently looking as a side project to build a web based game using canvas / webgl possibly, I don’t really want to take up iOS/Android dev to do this.
This is a new field for me being mostly a ecommerce guy rather then game dev, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows off a good starting point and decent frameworks to get me going.
I came across
http://phaser.io/
and it seems at a surface level semi suitable.
I’m not looking at doing anything overly complex, basically drag drop functionality for the interaction to navigate a sprite around mazes at a top-down level with I guess collision detection for when you turn the wrong way.9 -
I was struggling with a task on a project and decided to call the colleague, who's working on this project as well (he built it, I am just on-boarding) to get some advice.
Literally the first thing he asked me was: "have you seen whom this task is assigned to?"
Fuck! So I spent about 1.5 hours on not finishing a task that I shouldn't have worked on in the first place. Great.5 -
I hate being so insecure. I don't start developing an idea because I think I won't be able to do it, I don't code together with someone who is better than me because I think they'll make fun of me or think I'm doing it wrong, I don't speak up in class even though I probably, definitely, know the answer. I feel like I'll never get anywhere if I remain this way. Anyone have some advice? Thanks11
-
You know you have some power, when your boss asks you for your opinion and advice about how to structure an upcoming project and which technologies and frameworks to use.
Give me that raise already.1 -
The best dev advice that I had was when Google Apps recommended me DevRant, related to the apps I had installed. I learned so much since them.
-
Not particularly advice, but taught me Git, React, Node and bought me pizza whenever I succeeded in a task3
-
God: you qualify for reincarnation. What advice from past life do you want me to retain in your memory ?
Me: never forget to write those unit tests!2 -
"get lost"
The fucker was just saying he would not help me, but in the end I should have taken the advice literally and got the fuck out of that fucked up place. -
This seems like a good place to give this advice: whenever I'm having a bad day, my console consoles me.2
-
Interview at amazon on Monday, wish me luck! Any advice? I've got 3-4 years experience, so not grad but not huge amount of experience.7
-
I've been programming for a career and as a hobby for more than two years now. I want to start contributing to some projects on Git hub, but I'm not sure where to start. What advice do you have for me for first starting out on Git hub?6
-
Is it just me or Social media has made everyone philosophers automatically.
Like pretty dumb and hopeless folks you know in real life be posting some smart and motivational shit they copied off of some random site.
Dude get your dumbass off my screen mehn...coming around here giving advice on how to make my life better...have you seen your life lately?
It can't be just me...13 -
So, I want to start a blog where I can post the result of my research and showcases as tutorials... I though that if I'm doing it for my job, it could help somebody else.
What would you recommend me? Any advice?6 -
Don't remind me of that hackathon 😑 My advice: don't go there without being prepared, team wise, tool wise and skill wise. And whatever happens, don't forget to have fun.1
-
Not a rant, need advice
I recently signed an offer with Facebook, today Uber offered me a similar position with much more stock compared to Facebooks offer. What's the right thing to do here?
Should I go back to Facebook and ask them to match? Give up fb and move to uber ?29 -
Best advice a dev gave me? So much/many over the years.
I shared this one just last week to another dev..
"If you are writing a lot of code to do something, you are probably doing it wrong."
- Marco Cantu - Borland Dev Conference -
So I went to the store earlier today and an autistic young lad gave me one of the best pieces of advice anyone has EVER given me.
“Don’t let the haters stare into your eyes 👀”.
It took me a few hours for it to sink in and I now understood what he meant.
I feel better, enlightened, much more in control since I heard that young lad tell me those wise words of wisdom.3 -
Have to do a jee project without any knowledge in java, in 2 weeks.
Why ? My classmates put me in a group when i wasn't here, of course they know nothing and are not going to code..
Fuckkkkkk you!
Well, any advice with jee ? Where should i start to get a good grade x)9 -
my cousin wants to buy a new phone and asked for advice. (with advice I mean saying what he wants and hoping I agree)
*talks about lumia 930.
me: you won't be able to use these apps x,y,z......
him: why not it has better specs than mine. bla bla.... you will see.
week later
him: phone doesn't have Play Store installed. can you do it?5 -
Dev friend: Happy in your job?
- Me: Kinda, don't see myself doing it for another 35 years tho.. :(
Dev friend: Go back to school, learn computer sciences and get a dev job. You'll love it.
So now I'm back in school, no regrets whatsoever. Without a doubt best advice.. :) -
Literally the first rant I made when I joined devRant was about this very piece of advice.
Me: "The build in testing is broken, this is how we fix it"
PM: "They haven't noticed yet, work on the feature request"
https://devrant.io/rants/225727/...2 -
Looking for some advice....
So I'm a web dev that works remotely full time from home which I love, I'm expecting my first child in late march which is really exciting but I'm starting to think about how it's all going to work with the missus home for at least 12 months and of course a baby that (without sounding horrible) is going to be a big distraction to me when I'm trying to work.
So just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there in a similar position or that has gone through the same thing and how you did it? Is there any advice you can give me?
Appreciate any thoughts.13 -
Hi.. one month ago i started to learn JavaScript (my first programming language)
In the 2nd proyect we create a Data dashboard i do my very best effort to create Js funcional code and other 2 girls works in css and html.
Im really proud of my work (1st time!)
A few guys told me JavaScript is awful and difficult but in a few weeks we will start in jquery.
In 2 weeks im gonna participate in Angelhack Santiago Hackathon 2018
I need an advice for me its a really big step10 -
College male computer science student here:
Even when I find attractive girls who want to date me, the thought of it stresses me out. In reality if I can truly chat and have a good time with a girl she has been friend zoned.
Advice anyone?8 -
Biggest mistake I've made in my life is assuming other people knew more than me and asking for advice and integrating their advice. I suffered many years being tortured by terrible advice that had no actual relation or usefulness in reality but caused me stress to have to follow, and I was too inexperienced to know any of this.
The other problem with bad advice is; how do you know it's bad advice? If you got the advice when you were naive, and you followed it, never strayed from it, you will still be naive in that area, because of the dutifulness by which you stuck to that advice. You literally imprison yourself, forever, especially if you are very good at putting effort in and have high conscientiousness, reliability. You will never know you were wrong.8 -
Once a fellow dev gave me the advice of always questioning the enhancements and fixes that are asked to be done. She said i should always ask things like is this a legitimate enhancement asked for by the client? Is it really required? Will it alter any existing established flow of our system? Etc.
At least I found this helpful because it saved us a ton of unnecessary work that would later have to be rolled back. -
Here's an advice to you guys:
Ever look at your mailbox and think it's so full of junk?
Archive all your current emails.
Then next time you get any spam emails take the time to unsubscribe or block the sender.
Trust me, life is so much better after you've got rid of those craps. And it's not that hard like it seems. In a week you'll probably get rid if 90% of those.3 -
Instead of accepting reality like a big man and acknowledging that making software with a cargo culted process that has no function in organizing the development work, the boss is insisting I'm to blame and wants me to "take responsibility". Taking responsibility my *****. I slay the dragon in its lair.
Since I'm leaving, I tried to give him some sincere advice, totally flipped him out.
#6 days left. -
Why invite me to a 3 hour meeting where my old manager just pretends I don't exist and is trying to push me out of the project completely?
He's just bitter because I asked my new manager advice because he was too busy trying to get a new job at a different company.. rather than being my manager. -
The presumption of incompetence:
Has this ever happened to you?
Starting a task and chatting with a fellow dev-- my first time implementing analytics in this particular app. I mentioned to them that I've been doing analytics implementation on various apps at our company for years, but our current apps' analytics setup is the most intense and this will be a good learning experience for me to dig into.
They responded by sending me code snippets of existing analytics implementations to help me. Not hidden or lesser-known classes, very obvious ones I already had open and was working off of. With advice like "just search the codebase for 'analytics' and 'trackPage''" lol.
I like this person a lot, but this definitely caught me off guard. It felt like something her obtuse manager would do, but not her. This would probably not be a big deal to most but I'm so used to being given unsolicited/unhelpful/irrelevant advice from male devs, and having to be pleasant and thank them, this one was tough to witness.
How do you respond to unsolicited "help"? Does it bruise your ego the way it bruises mine? lol12 -
!rant && advice
I am an Android Developer, but about to start my final year. I got a mail from a company telling me saying...
"... and we are looking for problem solvers like you.
We Invite your CV and look forward to hearing back from you."
Stupid it may sound, but how do I reply to them? Do I also send a cover letter? If yes, what do I write? What do I mention in the email?
Thanks.1 -
Started my internship web project. Found myself relying a bit too much on stackoverflow and google for backend and frontend help and it's making me feel a bit too guilty. Any advice ?5
-
I really don't know how to please StackOverflow people. I did my due diligence on a bit of code but, like we all do, I got stuck and needed a bit of advice. I posted clearly and concisely and still my question got downvoted twice. What do they want? For me to post the question AND the answer? Only ask Ph.D.-type questions? Why am I never good enough for these people?!4
-
I'm starting my own business, I don't know where my future will go, and what I will achieve. I'm confused
please give me advice if you can12 -

"if you wrote good Code, you dont have to debug it. But if its Bad Code, you will spend 90% of your Time Talking to a Rubber Ducky"
-Me right now
(Or someone other but probably me)1 -
My first rant here, I just found out about it, I don't have much of programming background, but it always triggeredmy intetest, currently I am learning many tools, my aim is to become a data scientist, I have done SAS, R, Python for it (not proficient yet though), also working on google cloud computing, database resources and going to start Machine Learning (Andrew Ng's Coursera).
Can anybody advice me, Am I doing it right or not.?2 -
Me and my coworkers are pretty lucky. Your head of development is a developer himself and our CEO listens to developers on advice and actually tries to understand which parts are hard to build and which parts work very well.5
-
Background story:
One of the projects I develop generates advice based on energy usage and a questionare with 300 questions.
Over 400 different variables determine what kind of advice is given. Lots of userinput and over a thousand textblocks that need to show or not.
Rant:
WTF do you want me to do when you tell me. It's not giving the right advice for the lights.
Why the for the love of.. do I need to ask you everytime. If something is not working. Tell me what and for wich user. Don't tell me calculation whatever is not working, I don't know that calculation. Your calculations are maintainable in your cms.
And how, like I really wonder, do you expect me, when not telling me what user is having this problemen to find and fix it, You just want me to random guess one of the thousands users that should be given that specific advice?
FCK, like 80% of my time solving problems is spend trying to figure out wtf your talking about.
And then what a miricale the function is doing exactly what is it doing but you forgot a variable. It's not like the code I write suddenly decides it does not feel like giving the right answer.3 -
"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work." - Chuck Close

I might have asked this before, but since everyone on devRant except me is familiar with Git, please help me out a bit.
1. Should I use Git for a personal (game) project with a friend? (We'll work together via skype since we live far away from each other)
2. Noobs call Git "too difficult" - it seems difficult to me as well, what's your best advice (or resources, Git alternatives) to pick it up easily?
3. Will I have trouble with my slow internet (4mbps down 0.2mbps up)?16 -
Never designed a website before. Decided to go against my team's advice and use React. Neck deep in my own shit and nobody can help me because they don't know React. Should've just done it the boring way. Fucking pray for me people. It's due next Tuesday.... 😭2
-
Not so long ago, I used to talk to Devs for advice.
And now people are asking me for advice in their paths.

Anyone has had similar experiences?1 -
I admit i don't like JavaScript... not one bit and mainly because it is not strongly typed. The idea of Typescript is interesting.
Anyways, i decided to jump in and learn Angular... So do you guys have any advice for me?10 -
Hello everyone! 👋
Work on Chaaat is going rapid so far. We got our own js.org domain – https://chaaat.js.org
We now need a designer help! All we need is to create a simple SVG icon we just can’t draw ourselves.
We are always open for contributors! If you’re intern or junior developer and you want a real world experience with NodeJS/Express, REST API, OAuth2, MongoDB and React/Redux stack with detailed code reviews from senior developer, we’re open for your contributions. No experience required.
Cheers!11 -
Most memorable co-worker for me is my senior dev at my first job. He is awesome. He taught me everything and he never complained even if I ask some basic things and never got irritated when I made dumb mistakes.. he just simply explained and ask not to repeat that mistake. He gave me one advice that never ever be egoistic about your code, Yes you can feel proud but don't be like I will never tell or explain to my junior ones. Cause of Him I am good mentor/trainer also :) along with developer. Thank god at my first job he was mentor.
-
I found xss on the software the my school and many other schools use it. The bug is on every page of their website.
I reported the bug to their team, they fixed it and didnt even reward me.
What do you ranters advice me to?7 -
hey guys...
i need to create an application with video call and streaming...
i was advised to use node or golang as backend.
Does anyone know or have an advice to me or do you about a library or framework? other language, database? idk
thanks to all of you3 -
I've seen a lot of people design great websites here on DR. Since I'm being dragged into quite a bit of front end, I've decided to quit complaining and up my design game. Suggestions and advice on good design considerations?
Our creative lead sent me a few reference websites that had a lot of "wow factor". It had stuff like trailing text animations, slow motion menus and what not. For some reason, I found all of it to be annoying and pointlessly bloated. I'm more into minimalist design and simple transitions but idk if this is just my taste or lack of competence in making such fancy ass design that makes me not appreciate such sites. I need advice and I'm not sure on what. You'd probably know what if you've been in a similar situation before.14 -
me giving advice to beginners: don't feel bad about your code. as long as it gets the job done, it's good
also me: don't look at my code. it's terrible!10 -
My friend started giving me advice without me even asking. She didn't listen why I chose to do something but kept on saying it's a wrong decision and why I will regret.
I asked to some people in my network and they agreed with me.
During the conversation with my friend, I felt very furious ans once tried to stop her calmly but she didn't listen, in the end I hung up by saying that I'll talk to her later and ended the conversation without getting into shitty conversation.8 -
Noob: How do I start my career in web development, do I do a course in Coursera, Udemy, or...
Me: Don't do any of this, use Mozilla MDN web doc.
I really wish the younger me followed this advice when starting up...3 -
Just found out I have more work than I can manage stacked up until mid 2018 - all for me and where I am a single point of failure. I have several manager fighting for me and some smaller pieces of work mixed in too.
Any advice on how to get a raise while my stock is high?3 -
I am 17 years old, and I am trying to learn programming. I am currently trying to learn something in BASH. I have also used some JavaScript and Python to get a grasp of some concepts.
It is very satisfying when I am in the mood, but I often find it hard to find motivation to learn. Does anyone have any advice for studying techniques? General advice would also make me very grateful! :-)
I hope this is OK to post here..5 -
Started to learn java! Loving it so far.. Coming from Python 3 i thought this was not gonna be easy but so far so good.. Can someone give me some advice or tips on what to tackle next after java?17

Heyyy DevRant Fam! It’s definitely been quite awhile since i have posted in this amazing community and I apologise, i’ve been extremely busy with my uni work and just life caught up to me 😅, also as always I really hope everyone is doing very well wherever you may be as always :-).
I’d love to ask you guys a question that has been on my mind for a while now 😊, I’ve been thinking of making my own password manager for a side/fun project. What I’ve been doing is I’ve found a open source project on github and downloaded it , loaded it up and read through some code, from memory the project is called ‘keepass’ and its written in c++!.
I’d love to get some advice from you guys, how do i go about learning and understanding open source code :-)? What is some advice you can give to me? Anyways I’d be very grateful for any piece of advice :D once again as always hope everyone has an amazing Sunday night and long weekend, wherever you may be!.
Thank you for reading my very long post sorry for rambling on 😅.

Call me an idiot... Yesterday I just installed Arch Linux. Guess what happened?
I formatted my fedora-drive and then noticed I destroyed my bootloader. Please just kill me😫 Anyone had such problems too and maybe could give me some advice how to fix?5 -
I wanna buy a RasPi, what's your advice as to what model I should get?
Its purpose would be being a web server, mainly. Also, if you have any suggestions for addons or additional stuff, please let me know :)23 -
Let me share a million dollar worth of advice with y'all
RGB makes your code run faster and gets rid of errors. If it doesn't work, you're not using enough RGB.7 -
You know when you are suddenly push to a new position that you are not familiar with?
Well I just became a server database/cloud expert. Fuck me.
Been Googling for a while now. If anyone has any advice, I'll appreciate it.
Anything free and open source, even better.6 -
I am going to an AI conference in Berlin (which is kinda far away from me) next month.
I am just learning AI & ML and integrating them into a personal project, but I am going there to meet people, learn and gather info.
Do you have any advice on how I could network with people that are masters in this area?11 -
Client can't pay me and has asked to pay me in four installments spread across on month. Surely to all hell, if you don't have the money, don't hire a goddamn developer!
This job was decided before I got advice from you guys about getting a contract as well!4 -
The best dev advice a dev has given me is to write clean and structured code from the very start of every project. Changed my life in general.
"How you do one thing is how you do everything." -
Is anyone addicted to anything other than coding? :)
(Totally not a recovering addict looking for reassurance >.>).24 -
Client wants something that makes no sense in UX land. We tell them that it makes no sense. Client doesn't listen, tells us to do it anyway.
We do it anyway. Client has doubts about a small detail of the implementation. And asks us what our advice would be.
My advice would be that you start listening to the professionals. How am I supposed to give "advice" on a detail of something I disagree with in general?
Her: "I'm going to cut off one of my hands."
Me: "I recommend you do not do that."
Her? "Would you cut off the left or the right hand? I can't decide."
Me, saying: "I have no preference in this."
Me, thinking: "You should cut off your fucking ears, you're obviously not using them."2 -
We all have that moment in life when we feel that people around us are just there to -use- you. Honestly it feels annoying when the majority does. My friends noticed that a lot of people used me to help in their tasks. I usually don't say no, I find every opportunity to be a learning one.
A friend of mine, after hearing our stories, said something to me that has ever since stuck to me:
"if people don't use you, you're useless".
Honestly, I find this to be one heck of an advice. Certainly has made me feel like I'm on the right track! -
Whats the state of mobile development skills demand atm?
Thinking of getting into crossplattform development with flutter or kotlin or enhance my dev skills in native android development (10years exp.) and create me a base project with jetpack compose.
Advice appreciated.3 -
My parents didn't mind. Since childhood, they used to tell me that I can choose my profession freely. I tried with medicine. Burned lots of €s and lots of time. And then switched to IT. Parents did not get in my way - on the contrary, helped me wherever they could. And allowed me to shoot my own foot whenever I was so stupidly determined to.
I believe it's the best kind of parenting -- allowing your children to make their choices, their own mistakes and learn from them while suggesting a piece of advice along the way. -
I don't know what's wrong with me..
Within one day I basically lost interest in everything I do. I just don't see the point of all this anymore.
And the bad thing is, that I don't even know where that comes from so suddenly, everything is going fine, but still.. Life just feels like pain at the moment.
Don't want do drag down someone else with me and I sincerely apologise if it's too late to mention it at this point, just hope that maybe someone here can understand what's going on or give me some advice on how to fix my situation.7 -
So my co-founder, tried to outdo my equity in the company, by asking me to give up percentage of our equity for his father, so that he could have the leverage.
He is not talking to me since then,
When I said politely to piss off.
Just because you are a techie people try to abuse you
Any advice ?9 -
Anyone have professional advice for a relatively new and young dev (me) on how to develop a cross platform app for what is effectively a startup?
I’ve basically been indecisive over the past few months and I thought I’d decided on Xamarin but flutter looks better and more productive and ughhhhh
I don’t really know what to pick and I want to do this right the first time.7 -
Maybe I don't even want to understand what "programming" means. Although I keep visiting StackOverflow almost daily to find useful advice on topics that do matter to me, when I post a question myself, they mostly get deleted for being "offtopic", not real "programming" questions, prone to attract "opinionated answers" or too much concerned about usability in real life? 🤔8

Health anxiety is funny.
a pendulum between
"oh no, what if I have x and die"
"jesus christ, this anxiety is too painful i wish i was dead"
death is a fucking tease.
anyhow, just venting, not promoting self harm, if you are having thoughts of mortality contact your national suicide hotline.
also, not trying to be a dick, but id appreciate receiving no advice, just a "i hope you get better" will help me a lot.3 -
I think about learning a lisp-family-language , but since there are plenty of them, I don't know which one to choose.
I've mostly coded in Go or typescript before.
Can any of you give me an advice with which one to start ?2 -
Just finished fourth interview with a company (fuck me) for a solutions engineer position (I am a self taught dev that is transitioning to technical roles from a pretty "soft" background with the hope of being in a software engineer role within three years). Anyone have any experience with the solutions engineer role and some advice about it? Note: this IS an invitation to rant about solutions engineers so I know what NOT to do.4
-
Hi devRanters, hi you all.
I really appreciate all of you that are patiently reading, humorously or not so humorously commenting and wise or not wise giving advice to my semi-serious rants.
It's a great stress relief for me in this moment to know somebody it's out there listening to my stupid problems.
And probably will also improve the life of people around me.1 -
So the guy I replaced as the senior dev on my project (because he was lazy) is now trying to give me advice on how to cleanup my code.... This is the motherfucker who blatantly copies and pastes from one library to another and pushes the code without doing ANY testing and so I had to spend many weekends cleaning up his pile of shit code, and now I have 3 new tickets labelled 'style updates' that he wants me to merge in.... Fuck him, I'm not merging his code4
-
I love when people who still use Windows 95 style on their desktop give me advice about my mockup design.

How the hell do I manage time as a dev and a project manager (sorry I'm new to the role of doing both and everything is hitting me all at once, any advice is appreciated)7

Recent discussion with ele gave me an idea to post this question here.
Which type of company should a fresh CS graduate work for? A corporate or a startup or a SME.
My advice for newbies is on SME for first few years. Then decide on your own based on your personality and career goals for future years.16 -
I got a rubber duck that can say what my code is doing wrong! Well, actually it is my brother that just gives me advice on how I can make my code work lol1

Hello guys, I really need some advice today...
I'm currently 18. I got accepted in two pretty equivalent colleges. One is in my city, 1h with the bus, and the other one is in another city.
Both are somewhat equivalent schools, the one in another big city is much nearer to other colleges I'd like to go to later (this one will last 2 years, then I'll have to go to engineering school for 3 years).
I have to decide monday where I'll go. It's horrible.. here, in my city, I have the person I love and the comfort of living by the parents (even tho it's a discomfort too). But the other city attracts me a lot too, independance does too.. it's horrible, I can't decide, I don't know if it's a good idea to leave, and I fear having regrets if I stay.
Have you some experience to tell me about? Some regrets you have? Or basically some advice?
It would help me so much, thank you!!8 -
Hey guys! So I need advice/strategy’s on how to let someone go in your life. It all started when I became friends with this person through other mutual friends, at first I didn’t even think twice about him. But now we started talking more and I realize he’s funny and nice, however, he does do some pretty bad things I don’t agree with. And whenever we are in public he ignores me and goes off with my other friends, how do I stop stressing about this. I really just want to let go of this person and move on, go back to not even thinking twice about him. I need help on how to do this, thank you so much for your time and advice.5

Hi guys some advice would be appreciated.
I’m new here but have followed for a long time. I enjoy coding in my spare time, particularly web development but I am looking to make it my career.
Currently I work in mental health as a social worker, but ultimately the stress of the job and life in general has led to me being detained in a psychiatric hospital. So I’ve decided I need change.
I want to start a career I want to be in and that is as a developer. In terms of education, I started a degree in maths/cs a long time ago but stopped due to life events at the time. All the rest of my qualifications are around social work.
I’ve been doing my best to learn with Udemy and free code camp. Mainly looking at JavaScript. I also used to work in a charity where I did some (bad) php development and front end work.
Are there any self made developers out there who have any advice for me? I’m looking at doing a bootcamp but dunno if that will help at all.
Any help or advice would be really welcome. Cheers guys :)23 -
i want to start learning C but i dont know what book to get , can anyone advice any books or source that will help me learn it !8

I have a programming tutorials website I built from scratch in the PHP framework Laravel 5.4. Recently my friends have been pushing me to use WordPress instead.
I haven't worked with WordPress yet but I just hate it. I always think that it will not give me the flexibility I might need when adding new features.
This has put me in great doubt and anxiety about what I'm doing.
Is wordpress a better choice? I'm I just being lazy about the WordPress stuff?
I'll appreciate any advice on this.6 -
Hi there everybody! Just joined the community, an aspiring Java developer (just started learning a few months ago so I am nowhere near calling myself a "Developer"). I'm committed to becoming a developer, and I am trying to join every community and every conversation out there possible to immerse myself as much as I can. Any advice, guidance, people/conversations here to look out for, anything that will help me in my Journey would be greatly appreciated!9

A noob here, please don't judge too hard.
My major is maths and philosophy(mainly doing logic in philosophy), and even though we had python in maths, it's so basic I don't even think I can say I learnt anything (sololearn on my phone taught me more lol)
Does anyone have experience of transferring to IT after or during a maths degree? Not rly asking for advice, just want to hear life experiences and maybe learn something!6 -
So I think I know the theoretical stuff about js but I have trouble implementing them on my projects.
Like I'm clueless and don't know what to write. (these are my very first projects)
Is it normal?
Can you guys give me some advice?14 -
"The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. ... All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself."
--Chuck Close
Motivation, inspiration... works for either.1 -
I started my first job as a junior JS developer a month ago, and I'm quite overwhelmed with all the things I don't know. I feel like the knowledge gap is vast between my colleagues and me.
So what's the best advice you can give for me and how I can keep improving myself. I used to take many online courses before I started, but now my time is limited, and can't watch as much as before :(8 -
Gonna be applying for college. Gonna major in programming.. I've always read the horror stories.. I hope my teachers arent retarded and dont make me use shit software..
Any advice?..3 -
Been thinking about this a lot and I'd love your thoughts. Recently a friend was starting in dev. They asked me for some advice. I just said "be humble and hungry". I've built my career on that phrase. Be willing to listen and willing to put in the work.
What is your best advice for the young devs out there?4 -

Thankfully I've been lucky enough to work with many brilliant people. The best being the ones who are enthusiastic about sharing tips, tricks and helpful advice to new people. Little pieces of advice from old colleagues have followed me throughout my career, for sure.
By contrast, people who sit in a dark corner, bemoaning everything and being completely unwilling to help can have enough negative impact to cause talented people to leave. -
Hey guys! Can anyone help me with coping up with very low savings? I have been looking for freelance jobs, but I haven't gotten any clients. Any tips or advice that may help me get myself out of this pinch.(BTW I live in India/and am a college student. 21yo.).7

Ok guys n gals, I really need help with this one. I have been offered a position at a company with a nice salary but I really don't feel the company's product, furthermore I think that the industry cut they are working in is one of the most boring ones. Thus taking this job will mean that I will be turning on almost everything I believe. Another thing is that I will have to relocate to a town that I really don't like.
On the plus side the team looks great. Everyone seems really friendly and I am certain that I will gain a lot of experience. Also I'm a recent grad and I've been looking for a position for a couple of months. I know that this looks like a dumb dilemma but for me it's not. I'd really appreciate your advice..8 -
hi guys, I applied for a job and I passed a coding test. Now they called me for interview tomorrow. It will be an 2 hour on-site assessment group assessment for them to see how I think and work. I am a fresh graduate. Any advice? Feeling bit nervous9

I am starting my web development business and i intend to focus on building mainly custom ecommerce solutions to small and medium businesses or large ones too. I am just about to launch my first project and my client has been great.

I like advice mainly on how to find new clients.2 -

I cant really contribute much to this wk because im mostly doing dev stuff in my free time.
But league and, well, strategy games in general taught me a lot about micromanaging stuff and thinking ahead. My advice is, if you wanna get better at most mental tasks, go download lol or grab a copy of cities or eu4 and play for half an hour every day.9 -
Is it just me or have you all be noticing a significant increase in the number of posts on devRant asking for simple technical assistance with code and packages?
I've always had the opinion that asking for personal advice here is fine but technical stuff should be kept for StackOverflow and other such forums. What is your opinion about that?2 -
How often do you go for an interview? A senior once told me to go for job interviews regularly to know where you stand. WDYT of this advice?5
-
I have become so fed up with the BS people say that now if someone gives me an advice, I do the exact opposite just to fuck with them.4

"Oh just promote the fixes already! Don't worry, it won't break other stuff."
Not the worst advice maybe but certainly something that got me doing a lot of rework. I freakin' hate rework.2 -
So I'm a final year comp sci student, and really struggling to find a job. I've been applying a lot, doing assessments e.t.c, but people don't seem to like me when they meet me. Am I doing something wrong? I normally research the company as much as I can and try to show how much I know, and try to give the best answers I can think of, but I'm not sure why they don't like me. Any tips or advice?13

So yesterday, I was testing some new features that I just implemented in this project at my internship. The thing did not work.
Today, I came in, literally changed nothing, opened up the test again, and now the features work perfectly fine.

This advice made me happy today, so I want to share it with you guys!
1. Never overspend your income.
2. Never live your life full of jealousy and resentments.
3. Great opportunity doesn't come often, when it comes make sure you take action.
[If you want :) share some other great advice you've heard]4 -
I’m working on a side project just to not die from the repetitive college workload
I want to public the GitHub page so I can get more feedback then when I occasionally can show my teacher. As well as get advice and ideas from a larger group of people who all have more knowledge and skills than me.
But every time I think about pressing that button to show the world, I get worried about embarrassing myself, like this is my first large scale project all on my own. Using tools and a language I’m teaching myself in my free time with occasional advice from my teacher. What if it’s so horrible I just make a fool of myself
What does devRant think??1 -
Actually not a rant, I just want to share my happiness with you guys. Finally I broke out of a startup, and got accepted to an international big company. Cannot wait for the things I’ll learn there, it’s so exciting! (Yep, this is a very big milestone for me as an autodidact programmer.)
Any advice you can give to me? What was your biggest achievement so far in your carreer?6 -
So guys at the moment Im working at a medical company as a business temp but I really like it here. At the moment they know me as the tech guy. I want to be the official systems administrator here but don't know how to go about doing that.
I have a strong Linux background but everyone here uses windows.
I think that they need a server but I don't think I can just go up to my boss and say "hey, I know I'm not certified yet but hows about you give me money so I can set up a server for you?"
I need advice.5 -
When I started developing and was skeptical on my efficiency, one of the first things someone said to me was, "honestly, as long as it works, they'll be happy."
Aside from encouraging bad coding practices, would any of you give that same advice?2 -
I'd like to thank a certain person, who will remain unnamed, for some amazing advice and feedback. There are some truly great people out there, and you wont know until you go and look for them.
She showed me I'm not Brain (knew that one), but I'm probably not Pinky either.
Though I still desire to build giant robots and topple cities like Godzilla playing jenga.
Dont let your memes be dreams.3 -
OK - so I have a new job which I am loving but I am needing to use a Mac book which is a little frustrating. Coming from Linux with I3wm I have stuff just so.
The biggest change I miss is that I can't hover the mouse over windows to give them focus. Also middle click pasting would be awesome. Does anyone have any advice / solutions to make me feel at home? -
Been dabbling with it here and there and I’ve decided I’m going to attempt to fully switch to vim as my main editor, so any advice to make me want to keep using it or that people should just be aware of when starting with it?5

Advice needed!!
I had a telephonic conversation a few days ago with a startup and they said they would assign me a task the next day. At the end next day I emailed them asking about the task as they didn't assign me yet. They replied saying they would assign it the next day.
That day was yesterday and I still didn't get a task.*What do I do?* I don't want to look desperate but I'm in short of time and won't be able to manage if it gets more delayed.3 -
i need advice, is this a good database structure? this is a comments table with foreign keys to users and posts table. the post_id and user_id can be repeated a lot of times so i wondered if i missed something here. i kinda forgot the 1/2/3 normalized form rules, so can someone give me a quick refresh? is this current structure good or should i change it?4

I have got ton of great colleagues that I have worked it and consider myself very fortunate that they were hunble and patience enough to deal with me.
Having said that, it would be evident that I have gotten some great advice too. In fact those minor comments here and there made me who I am today (a much better version of my past self).
One advice that I got from my South Korean colleague, who was based in Singapore and used to collaborate with team in Pacific time (US west coast) at odd hours uptil of 12 AM almost everyday.
When I was new, she kept telling me to get enough rest and not burn myself out. In early days I was very excited about the new stuff.
She said, 'Floyd make sure you set yourself up for a marathon and not a sprint.'
Damn! That hit me hard. Not just from a professional stand point, but also from a personal perspective, I realised that I need to slow down, enjoy the details, live those moments, and let shit go.
She is one of my favourites.3 -

Young aspiring dev asking for career advice here. I have to choose between two job offers:
1. The first for a larger company that mainly works with a top-tier company's solutions.
2. The other for a smaller company where I have more freedom to choose a stack.
I'm not really straight out from university. I'm wondering about what would be the most developing for me personally and professionally. Does the size of the company matter? I work hard and like to be rewarded for hard work, where is that more likely to happen? Should I choose from what stacks I prefer? Salary?
Do you fellow devs have any other input or advice? Perhaps guidance on other questions I should ask myself?2 -
So sick of my coworker explaining to me how I should do a task. Dude, I've already planned out how I'm going to handle the situation. If you really want to help, wait until I create my pull request, review it, and then make your suggestions there. Unless I ask for your advice on how to do something, I don't need you to tell me how you would do things, especially since i have, what, 5 years working in the framework when you have 2 months?

I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company?
Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day.
Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future.3 -

Hi,

Hey ya'll, I was wondering if you could give me a career advice. I'm a front end dev with about 3 yrs of experience, and would like to do more cloud architecture/devops. How would I go about it, considering that I've only used aws, gcp, and azure for my hobby/side projects? Should i get certified? Who would hire me?
I'd really appreciate any advice/tip!17 -
Hey y’all. I’ve worked with a couple startups and live in a third world country. Recently I received an offer from a Fortune 500 company to relocate to a first world country. A couple of buddies and old workmates who know about this are discouraging me to take the offer with claims that there isn’t much to learn or gain in those companies, but there hasn’t been much learning or career growth gained from the local scene. My question is if anyone has any insight kindly advice me on what the right move is. Because I feel I’m gonna go for the offer.5

I need advice!
I have a project idea that involves creating a cross platform gui but I cannot decide on a framework.
I have been toying with the idea of electron(ugh please no), c++ with either gtk+ or qt, Java with JavaFx.
I really want to be be able to create binaries for Mac windows and Linux while keeping bundlesize low and efficiency high. With this in mind I am leaning towards a c++ implementation but qt (which seems to be the best option for this route) has an insane learning curve. Is there something I am not thinking of that would satisfy these requirements?10 -

Andy Hunt was a great devRant podcast guest. His advice on successfully implementing agile and client psychology already has helped me.
Who do you think would make a great guest and optionally why? Maybe @trogus and @dfox could tally our ideas and try to book them as future guests. -

When you are stuck in a job you don't particularly enjoy due to outdated technologies and among other reasons but still need to get the work done, how do you come home and do more coding? I am personally so drained that I cannot even look at a computer anymore, maybe someone can chime in and give me advice as to how to break out and not be stuck in the same place for the next 10 years?3

I switched from a full stack dev to quality assurance job because they offered me 2.5x my pay but now no company wants to hire me....and I really want to get into cloud now and eventually become a cloud developer, I am learning linux and have taken the AWS cloud practitioner essentials course but still not getting anything yet, any advice?

Not a rant but a helping request.
A friend of mine just asked me if I can make an ERP System for his father, he wants to take control of the inventory, and the merchandise decrease.
Any advice of which database would be better for this job since I don't think he is going to pay for a license or something like that.
I was thinking using MySQL and C# or maybe Java.
Any comment is well appreciated ☺️7 -

Maybe someone can help me out here...
I'm doing a small robotics project, where I'm building a line following robot.
That in itself is fine, and it works, however, the robot also needs to navigate through a maze.
The thing is, I only have access to two sensors, 1 light sensor, and 1 color sensor, meaning that I can't detect junctions.
Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how I could approach this with my restricted sensor count?2 -
Looking for advice.
A client has asked me to set up a PoE CCTV system capable of being monitored off-site. I've looked at various camera systems but all of the apps (I'm checking Play store) have bad reviews.
Rather than using an NVR I'm wondering if it's possible to use Linux or Windows on a PC connected to a PoE switch (and the internet.
Anyone done anything like this and can recommend software?6 -

I am about to change job, leave my first company to another, hopefully better one. I have one offer for a multinational company, plus training perks and an offer from a smaller one. They roughly give me the same money. Did a trial day in both of them and they seemed ok to work...
Everyone I talked to, told me to go for the small one, but I really don't know what to do.
Any ranter have carrier advice?5 -

Hi friends, I would like to ask someone who is more experienced in the field than me about C# and web development.
I am currently just a front end guy, with no real experience in back end - but I've been learning C# for game development with Unity for some time and wanted to ask if c# could be a nice direction for my back end learning?
Is it viable, good?
Any advice is highly appreciated ☺3 -
I don't have any real world dev experience yet. I also dropped out of my Engineering study to start learning code on my own. But I did apply for an internship/traineeship. I just started out ( 1,5 months). I got invited for an interview and the big day is tomorrow. Super nervous. I expect no for an answer ofcourse. But what are ways too turn the tables around and possibly get this job?3

Okay so I want other opinions. So I've been studying for C++ competition and I don't know how to keep learning the language.. for python I just kept finding projects to do or picked a module to learn. But with C++ I was gonna work on the <random> and <string> libraries but after that I have no clue :/13

Guys, I need some advice. I finally got a customer, and I'm trying to convince them to let me add SSL encryption, but they don't want the extra costs involved, that hosting providers tend to charge.
I don't really know of many hosting providers, as I run my own server, so I was wondering if people could recommend anyone that can let me run a nodejs backend, using mongodb?8 -

Need Advice:
My whole life, I have been a sole developer. Most of my project was a single person. I was responsible for the frontend, background, server deployment, and everything else. I liked doing the thing my way.
After working like this for a decade, recently, my company hired a second developer to help me (So I can do the management of other projects.)
The biggest challenged that I am facing right now is the difference between my thinking of a problem or the way to solve problems compared to the other guy.
There are many things that he and I do differently.
I need some advice on how to work in teams. I how to manage things better. -
I really need some advice.
So the company I have been at the last year and a half wants to give me my first compensation evaluation at my two year mark. It makes me feel underappreciated and just unhappy, so I'm starting to look elsewhere.
How should I prepare for interviews? Cracking the Coding Interview, then Leetcode (free), then Leetcode paid (Pro), then ??? I am frontend so I don't deal with BSTs and such ever.
Any advice would be appreciated on how to proceed with my career.1 -
Am i the only one who stop watching conference whenever a Windows developer comes in and try to give his piece of shitty advice cause trust me guy 99% of times this advice is linked to some shitty promotion of their twat service their cloud, test labs whatever . Fucking waste of one hour . Microsoft is a bag of shit company

I'm about to send an email to a client with some well-written recommendations and advice in it. I swear that if he calls me quickly like he usually does, and before sufficient time has passed for him to actually read and grok what I've written, I will ignore that call and wait until tomorrow morning to get back to him. RTFM, dude!

I need some advice about setting up monitoring. For background I have 4 gameservers and it is already hard enough to to develop them, but I am also responsible for support and monitoring of bugs/logs and other shit.
I can't disconnect from my work anymore.
I want to setup some kind of monitoring system, that would check constantly on my gameserver mysql databases and show me charts of what's happening over time. In that case I could have a quick glance at some dashboard and wouldn't need to waste my time logging into game and checking everything.
I would also need to setup some notifications in case shit goes down.
Any advice what could i use for that?2 -
I have been learning android dev in android studio for the past 20 days from the book "Head First Android Development" and as I am starting new chapters, there are always new methods, inner classes... of new widgets getting introduced to me and it's getting hard to memorize all these stuff!

" Whenever we are stuck in a life situation, ask yourself 'what do i want in my life?' "
Yeah people are nice enough to give you this useless advice. I would rather like if someone showed me things that i "should be wanting" in my life :/
I had always been a member of a family where adjusting is a common practice. And now everything seems useless when we could simply "adjust"2 -

I need some advice on how to separate workstations. Currently I'm working with 6 projects at the moment and sometimes I use my PC, sometimes win laptop, sometimes macbook and it has become a mess.
Ideally I would like to have separate windows/mac instances where I could have project specific stuff installed. Having different windows accounts is not an option since I'm not sure if I will be able to multitask between projects effectively. Separate windows desktops also is not good enough for me. Buying multiple PC's as well. Maybe some cloud solution would be the way?
Can anyone advice on this?11 -
I had a client with an ongoing project. Everything was going fine until her boy-asshole-friend talked to me by phone... He was so ignorant.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about the ignorant who doesn't know anything. I'm talking about the ignorant who doesn't know a shit but he is talking about it and refuses to get a professional advice. He told me explicitly: "Don't use test server for testing your project. Do it directly on production"
Unnecessary to say that my client "suspended" the project.1 -
Got rejected, need advice.
I had an interview for a remote company in Singapore, they said they found a better candidate in the end. I really wanted this job because they would've paid me 12-15x my current salary. Ofc I understand that I'm still a Junior and I'm not an attractive candidate, so my question to you is, other than my years of experience, how can I make myself stand out from the crowd?3 -

I transitioned from js to c# about 4 weeks ago for my first job in the industry. It has been a really rough 3 weeks for someone who hasn't had any OOP experience. I've been trying really hard to ramp up, but I'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around some of the advance c# topics (e.g. interface, extension methods, etc.) Does anyone have good resources or advice to help me get my feet wet?4

People giving advice: Have you told your boss how you didn't like his approach? If you don't tell them they can't improve.
me: No, but it's easier to just find another job than risk getting fired. Another day he asks me to do dumb stuff is another day of wage earned while I'm given permission to put off the more serious stuff -
Honest question.
Developers that don't work for a company and that don't use freelancing platforms but are successful, you're making good money, how do you guys do it? What advice would you give me, I really just started out as a developer a few years ago and I can say I'm still struggling but have high hopes for the future. Any advice is okay.4 -

My senior software engineer keeps telling me my tasks are trivial but doesn’t explain why they are trivial. Sometimes I feel like I’m wasting my time. I find it increasingly difficult to talk to him because I don’t feel like I’m doing a good job. I know everyone learns at their own pace and I am learning new things and concepts every day. But I don’t feel like I’m learning well or fast enough.

Learning how to build micro services using Spring Cloud. As I'm not familiar with this architecture, the company's lead engineer suggested me to do research & development on it, recommended me to follow official guide lines before involving me to the current under development project.

I've got a basic understanding of c ++ and recently been asked something that's left me stumped. Am I able to take audio data (A sign wave as an example), output some of that data to a buffer that then directly outputs it to an audio device or speaker, without saving the data to an audio file and playing that? Been looking around Google (,Still am) and I'm not finding anything exactly the same that's answering my question or one that gives me an idea on how to do this. Any help or advice would be appreciated, even if it's only pointing me in the right direction1

Hello everyone,
I wanted to ask for advice about hosting providers. Specifically looking for vps servers.
I'm currently using OVH, but I got some recommendations that would give me a lot more for the price.
The recommendations I got were Contabo, Hetzner and Netcup
Maybe some of you have experience with those Providers and can recommend one, or maybe even some not on that list.
Thanks for taking your time to read6 -
I've been wondering what laptop I would want to buy next year for uni, I was considering buying a regular windows laptop then downloading a Linux based OS, but I then discovered this laptop company called System76, which sells Linux based laptops out of the box. Hey all! I'm gonna be graduating soon from grad school and I'm starting to realize that I have no idea what I wanna do with my programming career!
I currently work as QA but have been really working towards being a programmer but the only problem is that I really dislike web applications ... specifically front end.
With most jobs being full stack web apps, I feel like I'm really gonna be limiting myself once I'm applying for junior software engineering jobs.
I'm just wanting your thoughts and some advice on what I should do since in still trying to figure things out. The only goal I have in life for my career at the moment is to be a software engineer.5 -

Greets. I need advice. And before reading just skip me with classic things you can't - you shouldn't. As i am Windows user last 20 years, I never actually used any other os (running ubuntu on vm occasionally doesnt count). I was thinking between Fedora, Arch and Debian (i dont want Ubuntu), but also what it should be a main key of my decision is good documentation backed up distro. Thanks in advice if you are willing to help my decision2

[ADVICE NEEDED]
I'm just going to graduate, and I got a job as S/W engineer(trainee) in a small (500 odd employees) company, which uses salesforce, SAP and sharepoint technologies! They are most probably gonna put me in salesforce or SAP. Is it good enough for `me`(read my background), I'm kind of confused, should I go for higher studies?
BACKGROUND:
very average student, but swift at learning technologies, never really got interested in competitive (otherwise I had a real good chance in top companies), I kind of have good IT skills - proficient in python and angularJS, but recently I have got into ML and done some projects!
Okay here's the part, I know it's important for a fresher to be good in data structures, I'm indeed good in parts which I have used! I haven't used AVL tree in any of my projects so I don't know, nor I have ever used bitwise ops!
I think I want to get into roots of ML (some people say I'm fickle but IDC), I think if I take the above job I may loose my interests or may not have time, Please advice.

In my current job, I feel like I'm not learning much as it like I'm stuck. I also want to work at Google, which has been a childhood dream of mine. Additionally, my upper management promote on using GPT to write code which I feel like it's not a good thing as a younger professional seems like my development skills is depricated. The worst part is that I'm unable to allocate time to learn new things on my own. I want to leave this job to focus on practicing my development skills through popular open-source projects, and by doing LeetCode and Codeforces. However, I'm afraid to take decision because of the current tech job market.
