So, I saw this on Reddit, and I thought about sharing it here...
What do you think? It's somewhat accurate, or it can have some changes?

STOP SHITTING ON PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES.
Now, I'm not talking to the people that don't take it too serious, but rather to people that think their language is superior and others inferior. Why shit on PHP? A lot of stuff is build with this, including devRant. For me, I'd love to learn any languages that has a proper use for me. (With this sentence I'm excluding all exoteric languages, because they are useless) If anyone says, Python is awesome as fuck, yeah, I FUCKING AGREE. Anyone telling me anything is crap, I disagree. If it's that terrible, how do you know about it? If it was never used ever in a project, how can you know its terrible? You can't. Unless you coded that thing yourself.
Next time don't waste your time on shit like that. I AM ALSO LOOKING AT THE HOLY WAR APPLE VS MICROSOFT VS LINUX
STOP WASTING YOUR TIME WITH SHIT LIKE THIS.19 -
My favorite languages are
1. Python (3)
2. PHP
3. JavaScript
4. Ruby
5. Java
Honorable mention: C++
Can anyone agree?42 -
New programming language alarm!
The V Language sets the goal to compete with Rust and Go. It's main advantage is appearantly it's efficiency and speed. You can build a basic web server with only 65kb file size.

Once in college I was walking around campus when I noticed that one of the classes were still teaching Fortran to their students as an introductory programming language.16

C++ is like HTML in the sense that everyone wants to learn it as a first language.
DON'T LEARN C++ AS A FIRST LANGUAGE! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING YOURSELF INTO.22 -
Programming Languages are Like Cars:
Assembler: A formula I race car. Very fast but difficult to drive and maintain.
FORTRAN II: A Model T Ford. Once it was the king of the road.
FORTRAN IV: A Model A Ford.
FORTRAN 77: a six-cylinder Ford Fairlane with standard transmission and no seat belts.
COBOL: A delivery van. It's bulky and ugly but it does the work.
BASIC: A second-hand Rambler with a rebuilt engine and patched upholstery. Your dad bought it for you to learn to drive. You'll ditch it as soon as you can afford a new one.
PL/I: A Cadillac convertible with automatic transmission, a two-tone paint job, white-wall tires, chrome exhaust pipes, and fuzzy dice hanging in the windshield.
C++: A black Firebird, the all macho car. Comes with optional seatbelt (lint) and optional fuzz buster (escape to assembler).
ALGOL 60: An Austin Mini. Boy that's a small car.
ALGOL 68: An Aston Martin. An impressive car but not just anyone can drive it.
Pascal: A Volkswagon Beetle. It's small but sturdy. Was once popular with intellectual types.
liSP: An electric car. It's simple but slow. Seat belts are not available.
PROLOG/LUCID: Prototype concept cars.
FORTH: A go-cart.
LOGO: A kiddie's replica of a Rolls Royce. Comes with a real engine and a working horn.
APL: A double-decker bus. It takes rows and columns of passengers to the same place all at the same time but it drives only in reverse and is instrumented in Greek.
Ada: An army-green Mercedes-Benz staff car. Power steering, power brakes, and automatic transmission are standard. No other colors or options are available. If it's good enough for generals, it's good enough for you.
Java: All-terrain very slow vehicle.11 -
Ever notice the similarity between Flat Earthers and people who believe HTML is a programming language?
You can present them with all the reason and logic in the world and they won’t change their minds.13 -
If you need a programming language to develop a programming language then how was the first programming language developed?😵11

So ppl are saying that js isn't a programming language cuz you don't need to compile it, so that means python and php isn't programming either..?13

Hi.
Programming language types are only two:
- Assembly
- All the rest
I'm destroyed, my brain is melted.
Assembly is hate and love at the same time.2 -

I have an idea to make server side html. Just for fun. Or for noobs who just wants to know web development.
Example syntax:
<html listen=80>
... something amazing

Any suggestions/ideas??
(This could also be the much needed revolution for backend)14 -
Javascript is becoming the mostly used language in the entire stack of technology. You can create mobile apps, websites, desktop apps etc... using javascript. Will this be the end of native programming languages?18
-
Just wondering why most of you here hate php. I have multiple live projects using the Laravel framework, runs great and I love it!13
-
I've been using C, C++ and Python for 10+ years and suddenly I moved to a new job where I had to learn and use JavaScript.
I think that it is different, as many say, but it is full of lacks and it's like a pile of hacks to make things work. It's a scripting language used as a programming language. What do you think about it?14 -
tl;dr Do you think we will any time soon move from editing raw source code? Will IDE or other interfaces allow us to change the code in graphic representation or even through voice?
---
One thing I found funny watching Westworld is how they depicted the "programming" - it is more like swiping on a smartphone, a bit maybe like Tom Cruise's investigations in Minority report. Or giving certain commands and key words by voice.
There was one quote from Uncle Bob's "Clean Code" I could never find again, where he said something along the lines, that back in the seventies or eighties they thought they would soon raise programming languages to such a high level they would use natural language interfaces, and look at us now, still the same "if's".
So I feel uncomfortable without my shell and having tried a graphical programming language once this particular (Labview) seemed clumsy to me at best. But maybe there are a lot of web devs here and it seems with them frameworks you might be able to abstract away a lot of the pesky system programming... so do you feel like moving to some new shiny programming experience or do you think it will stay the same for more decades as the computer is that stupid machine where you have to spill it out instruction by instruction anyways?7 -
Doesn't matter if you know a lot of programming languages. There is no greater satisfaction than when you write your first "hello world" in a new language.6
-
Sooooo.... I just read that CSS 3 is actually Turing complete. So ha to all of you that say CSS isn't a programming language. It's been proven that it is. HA. This is the second greatest day of my life, only after finding out that Powerpoint is Turing complete. Yeah.

I don't want to trash-talk anyone's favorite programming language - after all, I get quite pissed if anyone rants about my favorite language, too! I'm not saying that VB .NET is a bad language. It really has its strengths, even more so for beginner devs. But is this guy serious?
https://red-gate.com/simple-talk/...
I don't even particularly care for C# - mostly because I don't like Pascal Case and it's a Microsoft Original and I don't want MY source code spying on ME... But still... every single one of the points that guy tries to make is either IDE-specific, not a big deal or even an advantage in my opinion!
What bothers me the most, however, is the way he subtly tries to force his own opinion upon his readers. "It doesn’t matter if you disagree with everything else in this article: case-sensitivity alone is sufficient reason to ditch C#!" - quote end!
Real sneaky fella.11 -
Happy New Year!
This year I am going to learn new programming languages and they are: Python, Java/JavaScript, C/C#/C++ and the Linux Terminal.
I can't wait!11 -
Newbie-
Today: Loves Java
Tomorrow: loves Python
Next: loves PHP
Everyday: VERY FUCKING CONFUSED!
But, as long as the codes run, we good😏1 -
Anyone have the experience where you are learning a new programming language and you are eager to do stuff with it but you need to use another one for your job? So frustrating!2
-
So, i gonna teach my girlfriend programming... But i dont know which language is the best to start. My first language was Java and im not mad about it. But python isnt a bad decision either. How do you guys think?12

When java was facing extinction, during the JavaScript, Node, and reactive programming hype. It did what it had always done. just adapt to the hype and maintain backward compatibility. We can all learn a thing or two from the humble java. It never rushes, it's patient. Be calm and wait before you hype yourself.2

what do you think about AI(artificial intelligence)? and best language for AI ... i like c++ and go15

I would like to get a little bit into functional programming.
Do you have any language suggestions to learn?15 -
Which language do you hate the most, and why?
Mine is Java, maybe because I've been learning about it since I started to learn programming on class.. getting tired and bored since I met Js and Python10 -

"When developers encounter confusion, they usually blame the language instead of their lack of understanding."
I love this. It's from the You Don't Know JS Book Series that I'm reading. -
Is it me or you also feel guilty for handing over the shitty code that does the job and try to make it better before handing over?
-
The best programming language is ______.
Rant: There is no such thing as 'best programming language'!!!!!?????9 -
Best thing: I started to understand how compilers work under the hood (sort of), was even able to implement a few scanners already
Worst thing: I have absolutely no clue how to continue ._.2 -
I find dynamically typed language a lot easier to read and understand than statically typed language.
What's up with all these interfaces, types and abstractions, its just too much!
I do want structure when writing code, but also the flexibility to test things without the f*** interface/type errors!!!16 -
Question: Does anyone take scratch as a real programming language?
My answer: Hell no! But I'd like to see your opinion below.
Why now? Cuz I'm new to devrant and I saw and as saying that this robot had AI, when what it really meant was you can use our scratch ripoff and use our 10 lines of premade code...
Thanks for putting up with me!9 -
learning a different language can be difficult sometimes. since i already know other languages, i get them mixed up. putting semicolons, putting spaces even though i shouldnt, putting parenthesis or even forgetting some keywords because in another language, its not necessary. makes it difficult to adjust to the new syntax. but the fun part of learning is having more knowledge and experience.4
-
I'm developing a new (just for fun) programming language and I'm wondering what features I should add next? These features are already implemented:
- Printing text
- Variables
- user-input
- Datatype conversion (String, Int, Float, Bool, List, Dictionary)
- lists/arrays
- dictionaries
- Sorting
- Shuffling
- random numbers & choices
- Math stuff like: log, abs, floor, ceiling, sin, etc...
- Time & Date
- Working with files
- If-else statements
- Ternary operators
- Loops (for & while)
- Functions
- Classes
- Error handling
- Importing libraries & other scripts
- Arrow/callback functions
- Escaping (\)
is there anything you often use missing?11 -
Is it just me or does everyone hesitate a lot about what programming language to pick and work on the most? 😑😬3
-
I was talking to a friend, and they were arguing that HTML was in fact a programming language. Their main argument was that you needed HTML to make a website.
I told them you could use something like React, and they said it doesn't count since you're still writing was is basically HTML
As a result, I will be writing an entire and actually decent webapp in nothing but vanilla JavaScript to prove him wrong. Just a <head> section and a body that loads a JavaScript file
Wish me luck12 -
Earlier I used to say "I am good at throwing and catching." After learning Expcetion Handling in C++, now I am saying, "I'm good at throwing and catching EXCEPT in C++."
-
If you're feeling lonely and want a lot of responses in any dev forum, just talk shit about a widely used programming language.2

So, what language should I pick, to start my own programming language?
Or... like how does that work. Say, if you ever wanted to to it. Out of curiousity.
Yes. I'm qualified. That's why I'm asking.question new programming language let's call it 'devplant' you know manufacturing plant... never mind. like a factory had extra coffee today7 -

Is it interesting for a desktop only (expecially Python and C++) enthusiast?

Phps love of nested arrays is similar to that of structured programing and goto statements. You will do a lot of backtracking in both of them to see where things start. God bless PHP.3
-
What's your thoughts on stored procedures(of DBs)?
What are the pros and the cost you found or perceived?
When they are opportune?
Overusing them more than a programming language is an abuse?
I was introduced to a software started initially by economy\finance people which knew a little bit programming, nonetheless their doing became messy though time and at a certain point hired a team of 4 people(from my company) to deal with it, but the approach of the two programmers to build most of the framework on calling stored procedures or queries makes me want to puke, there are almost no layers of separation of concern in place x_x3 -
2 Days ago i started learning Rust, because i was planning to learn for years.
Well turns out, rust is even better than i thought! Rust's STL is basically a blessing, you have stuff like vectors, tcplisteners, etc. in there! So no more self-management of sockets which were necessary to write in c / c++ (without ext. libs)!
Fucking love that shit!! It's so great! :)6 -
I'm in the mood to learn a new programming language. I know python and I enjoy it. I want to learn a new language, but I'm not sure what I want to learn. I enjoy web development, but I want to learn a lower level programming language. Any recommendations?27

I often come into heated discussions with my colleague about whats the better programming language so I want to ask you - what's better:
C# or Java (from an overall standpoint)?19 -
I'm confused about this.

Alright so I'm in need of a little advice.
So I recently decided to go back and practice basic problem solving and from what I can tell now it's just me not used to JS like I am with python but I want to move on to bigger projects and other basic concepts (like manipulation of the DOM) and move away from basic problems.
But my concern is that I'll look at that list and only pick the ones that I feel I understand I can solve instead of the ones I cant. And theres a large list of them and I see that people are doing a lot of them while I'm just doing a few per page. And I'm afraid I'm just not good enough or stupid if I just ignore the basics and move on because the basics are there for you to figure out the easy stuff.
But I really just want to move on and I dont know when I need to. And last time I asked for advice I mentioned I have been programming for a few years, left out the normal accomplishments I've posted on here but I was just told since it's taking me this long I should just quit I tried to rebuttle but they kept telling me no that literally broke me and my confidence so now I'm sensitive to asking questions also fuck whoever that was.4 -
About to start writing a report for my programming languages course, I’m writing it over GoLang, If anybody has any good resources for any information on Go, let me know!
The report extends into the history, paradigms, features, memory management system, and anything else I can possibly find on this language. I can find some pretty decent references on the footer of Wikipedia, but I wanted to see if anybody who actually used Go had anything they’d like to share.
Thanks :)1 -

I came to a new school this year and didn't know anyone. I found out that there is a kid who likes to code, so I tried getting friendly with him.
Well, he knows HTMl/CSS...
Well, he just does Wordpress...
Well, he actually likes design better...
I've seen someone else who was trying to learn JS, learn with him, and the kid couldn't wrap his head around what a function did...4 -

Okay so I want other opinions. So I've been studying for C++ competition and I don't know how to keep learning the language.. for python I just kept finding projects to do or picked a module to learn. But with C++ I was gonna work on the <random> and <string> libraries but after that I have no clue :/13

The thing about me is that I always like to test new language, I like python javascript(node js, ...) and swift but at works I use pho and JavaScript, every time I start a project in a certain language than after some weeks I forget what I learn because I don't use every day
-
What programming language do you guys recommend to learn?
Currently, I know Java, PHP and JS but I want to try something else...
I was thinking maybe C, C++ or C#, opinions? Also, many people seem to praise Python as the new god of programming languages which will solve all of our problems, but until now I ran into nothing but problems really with literally every python-application I have used (mostly incompatibility between certain packages which actually were the required version, I found it very annoying to fix every time). Is that just me or does that happen more often?16 -
