So I have this friend of mine who has learnt Python at good level (that's what he says) and is with me in all classes in college. I have worked with C, C++, C# and Java only and hated Python when it was taught (wk44).
So the following happened in the last 2 weeks:
Once he wrote a Python function in terminal just returning a hard coded string (lame right) and will show me how cool is it and that it is sooo much easier.
Whenever we do a mini project together he will force that we use Python. Even in Image processing when everyone is ready to work on Matlab, he insists that Python would be a better option.
We asked that this XYZ is very easy to implement on Matlab.
We then had to listen about the large and great community of Python and that it has Libraries for everything and that it is the greatest programming language ever.
One day he saw my C# project for DFA and NFA simulation which was the greatest project I have "completed" myself, and went like "Hmph, if I was you, I would use python and make a more "professional" code" (then went on arguing as always)

I self-training on PHP, Ruby, Python, C# during 1 year without knowledge in programming. Now I finally find a job as professionnal web developper, without degree !

This happened when I was on third semester of the career at university. I had my first boyfriend, the "Python" guy. He has that nickname because he used Python as his main programming language and nobody on the classroom used it.

In a few words, he was a... horrible human being. He talked down to me almost all the time, saying to me that my country was sh*t (he is from United States, and for a reason he never wanted to told me, he cannot go back to his country), that my university was sh*t and he said "you're will be lucky if you rot programming in a chair".

As you might wondering, yes, unfortunately it was a toxic relationship. Once he said he wanted to kill the teacher because he though that he hacked his laptop D:

He claimed that he was going to teach me python and security stuff, bla bla bla, but nothing. I learned python by my own.

I almost lost my faith in dev future because I though that the only ones that could have a real future in programming where people without ethics and only if they have a friend or a relative on a company.

The saddest part was that I dated him because I love smart boys, but he was just an idiot that, furthermore, wanted to change me (he pressured me to have tattoos, dye my hair and have sex, things that, of course, I didn't do).

I found courage to break up with him. I waited until the semester ends (in order not to lose my programming final projects) and, the day after the last day of class, I broke up with him.

I recovered my faith on programming when, next semester, one of the teachers invited me to give a python programming workshop :D and I gave two python workshops, and two of mobile development.

Now I'm working as a junior .NET developer. Thank God I broke up with him before the relationship became even worse. "Python" wanted to marry me after a year! O_O

Getting stuck on a problem for 1 and a half hours when you realise Python was aliased to python version 2.7 instead of 3 :(

I’ve been programming with other languages than Python for so long that when I finally had to pick up Python to help teach my friend some python I felt like I was rediscovering a past life.

With Python I feel like King Fucking Arthur with the Holy Blade Excalibur, armored up and ready for fucking war.
When I’m writing a script I feel like I’m parrying and piercing my blade straight through that fuckers chest and slam them into the fucking ground. And leave their bleeding out cold dying body on the fucking ground with no hope in their eyes.

Although when an indentation error occurs I feel like I just fucking tripped over a fucking pebble and apparently stairs were nearby and I bash my head on all 1024 steps, get to the bottom to just to get some fucking Java Chad punt my fucking head like a fucking football screaming random reasons to not use python.

This happened yesterday. It was a Friday and I didn't have much time to implement something that I was asked.

I was supposed to get the cpu temperature from a host device and send it to the server. Instead I just used random.randint(x,y) (python random function) with x,y linearly dependent on cpu utilisation (cpu utilisation is easy to get).

The ability to generate random numbers on fly has to be on of the coolest things that you can do. You can almost fake anything using them properly 😅

That being said, why on earth do they use fucking drag and drop programming? I would argue Python is easier to learn and infinitely more useful, and this is coming from someone who can't stand Python.

So far the only thing that I can think that the Hour of Code achieves, with drag and drop programming, is people possibly getting into Scratch, and fuck Scratch.

At many places, first programming course is Python or JavaScript. Our university first teaches C. I feel its a great language to build up programming skills. Tough then formers and that's what makes it more beneficial.

Python code is shorter but for me much more "logical" & easier to read is Java. Maybe it due to fact that I don't understand what is going on under hood so shorter code feels incomplete?

First I helped her with coding the Newton-Raphson method in Python (she has background in Mechanical Engineering).

I have 6 years of programming experience, so I'm the go-to guy at my college when someone's Python code doesn't work. The amount of unfathomably obvious problems I've fixed for people makes me wonder if some of my classmates are incapable of reading.

The programming teacher was interested in Python, so I showed him what a script we made in Java would look like in Python, and he was so impressed he is thinking about completely changing the learning plan stuff to teach Python instead of Java. Now I'm not sure if I should've done that, because I was interested in the Java stuff and things and the other classmates would probably be completely confused if we take such a turn. :S

Imagine the horror of learning C programming with manual memory management, pointer arithmetic and without your cool utility libraries after programming for 2 years in Python just becoz it's in the fukin syllabus!!

My first rant here, I just found out about it, I don't have much of programming background, but it always triggeredmy intetest, currently I am learning many tools, my aim is to become a data scientist, I have done SAS, R, Python for it (not proficient yet though), also working on google cloud computing, database resources and going to start Machine Learning (Andrew Ng's Coursera).

What's the deal with Python? All the young devs coming out of school are so centered on it, but honestly I can't think of a project that I've had where it was even considered being used. Am I missing out on some hotness here? I know some schools are moving away from Java centered education to Python to help ease people into programming. - Learned C, using two good books: K&R C and Zed Shaw's "Learn C the Hard Way" (back when it was still in development and was free to read on the internet)

Started studying physics at uni. Frist semester i had to take an introductional course to scientific programming in Python. Thought i would hate it. I was very wrong. Loved it. The next semester had no programming and the physics was so not what i expected. Dropped out and began studying computer science instead. Im now in my final year of my bachelore's degree, planning my master's.

They call Python, C, Java, Ruby, and stuff like that programming 'LANGUAGES' for a reason. I just wrote a Python dictionary literal in my C# code and was clueless as to why it was failing to compile for five minutes straight. Maybe that was because I was working with Python like 30 minutes ago.
It's like I have to have one 'brain' per one language and need to switch between such 'brains' to write code in another language. And such switches take time.

Past two years when I was in 7th grade, my computer teacher taught us the first programming language ie Python. At first, I just copied the syntax in my copy, and in the evening, I searched for it on YT

This introduced me to a new world of programming and I started learning it further

No best story, but definitely a worst human to ever exist. The first day of can class, I asked this guy what language we would be using, and he sincerely said "English". This man thought I was referring to that, legitimately. Never for one second did he think that I meant programming languages, since we ARE in a cs class. He then said that for programming languages he wanted to do Python and or html. I lost all respect for him the first day.

I've got quite excited that they changed a program at my university and they decided to put python instead electronics at first year. My younger friend came to me with notes from the lectures and asked for help. It seems that my university thinks that starting learning programming with overloading operators at first class is a good idea and they say that python 3.x isn't used widely yet, so they will stick to 2.7 during course.

It's an irony in my case. Python is so simple and fast to implement that I end up doing all my projects ( web dev, ML, crawlers, etc.) But still I can't use Python for solving competitive programming. Python seems unknown if I don't have access to google. Way to go to learn Python. Though able to think Pythonic nowadays.. ;p

I'm fairly new (less than a year) to programming and I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are about this.

Is taking college math courses necessary to be a good programmer?

I am learning online and I'm worried I won't be a great programmer without all the math. The last course I took was Trig :/

A friend suggested that I'd start learning a scriptable language like Ruby, Python or JavaScript instead of beginning with HTML and CSS, until I feel comfortable with programming.
I want to be a web developer and Ive learned some HTML.

My older brother introduced me to linux and android custom roms when I was like 11. So I flashed my old sony Ericson phone with custom roms from xda and tried Ubuntu live CDs on my mother's old 40gb hdd laptop.
But my introduction to programming was when I saw some videos about the raspberry pi on YouTube.
I was like 14 and programmed basic scripts for my raspberry pi in nano over putty or notepad++.
At first I didn't even knew to intendent but in the process of my first project (Python sunrise alarm clock with tts) I learned many valuable things about Python and Linux/Debian.
The years after that I learned more with my now multiple RaspberryPIs, Arduinos and other hardware.
So in conclusion RaspberryPIs, the diy/open source community and especially my brother introduced me to programming.
I am now doing bigger projects with my brother and have (really basic) knowledge of java,Javascript,php,html,Arduino/C++ and Python.

Anyone here worked a whole lot with low level programming?

I have always worked with high level languages like Python and C++, but I’ve also had an interest in working with embedded systems, real close to the metal.

Any directions on where I should go to start learning low level programming? Sites, languages, etc?

First day in introduction to programming. We were the first course to learn Python instead of Java. The whole lecture consisted only of what Python is good for and how powerful it is.

Yesterday, I started taking the new programming classes in my school. I am utterly disappointed, before even teaching my classmates who are new to programming some basic python or javascript, the teacher started the class with teaching arduino and C and because of that many of my friends have since dropped the class and we are only 3 left out of an original 20.

Although some of you might say that arduino is a good introduction to programming, I believe you should teach a kid basic python or java before getting into arduino or raspi..etc

This was in 1st semester and our CSE course went under some major course revision. Python was to be taught in place of C. Now the professor we had was very famous and we were excited to be in his class. But little did we knew he had no knowledge of Python at all. He used to tell the lab assistant to teach.It was so bad that I lost all interest in programming!!
But we all studied python later in our winter holidays for further courses.
Next semester we had OOP and this is what happened:
1st lab:
Professor(different): I expect you have basic knowledge in programming so I have uploaded.
Every question was related to structures in C.
In the same semester, we had data structures where we were 'expected' to know C or C++.
Later we came to know that Python was not going to be of any use in any course ! First semester went into dustbin.

My (younger) brother used to be way better than me at programming. He was making all this cool stuff (mainly Arduino).

I learned to program to make cool stuff like him basically. I learned Python to start since someone told me it would be easier to start with (it was).

I made a bunch of small programs (shitty things to help with homework, text based game, etc).

Eventually took programming classes in university.

Now I do C++ for a living.

Is there is an extension in VSCode where the ";" is added (when needed) if the file extension is for the programming language which support ";" ?

I been switching back and forth from the python and C++ and my sub-conscious is killing me.

Coding with python and calling it programming is like printing out pictures and calling it painting.

Is PHP really that bad? All my programming friends kinda despise my willingness to learn Node.Js or Ruby instead of python...

In searching for 2 days now if python is a scripting language or programming language, it seems to be a Neverending discussion...

Any other people here that find Python to be actually a harder language than Java? With Java it's much easier to keep track of your code and to track what variables refer to certain object types.

It feels like Python has much more quirks and feels therefore much more inconsistent as a language. Object oriented programming is more verbose with static methods and decorators being vague for example. This makes it harder to grasp concepts like design patterns and SOLID principles in Python imo.

As a novice programmer, learning about the logging package in Python and how to utilize it is really exciting to me. It's basically what I've been working with recently (besides the script for macOS that won't fucking work).

Guys, do you agree that C++ is getting overly complicated following the updated versions?

At times I wonder whether I should leave C++ and jump to python as my goto programming language.

You can find so many tutorials, learning paths for C#, C++, python, angular, jss, java, etc.
But literally none for batch file programming (if that's even what it's called) so little documentation on cmd.exe and writing .bat files :'(

So I've made this plan of what I'm gonna learn/practice/study programming wise. Some of it involves learning new languages and I'm always told i shouldnt be hopping between languages but I really want to learn fucking PHP and C# even fucking C to help my python and it's not like its overwhelming but I hate when I get told to not bounce between languages IVE BEEN USING PYTHON FOR A YEAR AND A HALF I THINK ITS TIME FOR ME TO POLISH MY JAVASCRIPT AND LEARN A FEW MORE LANGAUGES LIEK FUCK

Since MIT is giving free access to their courses online, I shall study Computer science web programming with Python and Java
as I thought it would be so cool to have a large snake round my neck as I drink coffee.

I learnt a lot of my java background from Minecraft modding. I even went back a couple years ago when I was learning python and used the Minecraft python api to make my learning a little more interactive.

I'm​ always trying to find cool ways to apply programming to my hobbies, and hacking / modding / breaking the games I play it's a hell of a lot of fun and drives me to learn more

My biggest dev regret is being complacent in my programming ability from way too early on. I learned a bunch of stuff from intro programming classes (which I always brushed off as "unnecessary" and "boring") because I was too ignorant to accept that writing the same Python code over and over wasn't progress. I'm way behind where someone with 7 years of programming experience should be, because I spent 4 of those years writing the same garbage.

I have started to learn Python and have ventured to the usual places to try and learn. Udemy, YouTube, Mimo app, and Programming Hub app.

I'm familiar with programming languages like c#, and JavaScript but have never become proficient in any of them. I'm hoping I can change that with Python.

Im looking for anything I can get. Advice, links, books, not sure what else there is. If it will help me learn and hopefully retain the info than I'm all for it.

I have learnt the basics of programming languages such as C and Python but have not learnt Algorithm and Data Structures in any exclusive way. Although we were taught little about algorithms in the class. So is it a good idea to learn these topics now from any online courses or MOOCs?

My biggest ambition? I'm working on a programming language as a side project right now. I'd like to get it to a point where id rather use my language over something like Python for small scripts. And maybe even do a larger project using my language.

Guys does any of you know good first c++ project. I have a lot of experience with java and python so I am not new to programming, but I want to get proficient in C++ because I am soon starting a job which all lower level programming.

Started with Codeforces. Some solutions in Python exceeded time limit at test #25. Wrote the same code in C++ but this time it exceeded time limit in test #33.

What’s the solution to this ? Replacing cin/cout with scanf/printf doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

When I was 15, I started learning Python solely from the Internet, directly from Python's own tutorial in their documentation actually. Never had actual "formal" programming lessons till I was in university, which tbh, sucks. I'd learn more at a faster pace if I went to the Internet... If only I'm not lazy... 😅
