First off, a Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I are very happy with the year devRant has had, and thinking back, there are a lot of 2017 highlights to recap. Here are just a few of the ones that come to mind (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff!):
- We introduced the devRant supporter program (devRant++)! (https://devrant.com/rants/638594/...). Thank you so much to everyone who has embraced devRant++! This program has helped us significantly and it's made it possible for us to mantain our current infrustructure and not have to cut down on servers/sacrifice app performance and stability.
- We added avatar pets (https://devrant.com/rants/455860/...)
- We finally got the domain devrant.com thanks to @wiardvanrij (https://devrant.com/rants/938509/...)
- The first international devRant meetup (Dutch) with organized by @linuxxx and was a huge success (https://devrant.com/rants/937319/... + https://devrant.com/rants/935713/...)
- We reached 50,000 downloads on Android (https://devrant.com/rants/728421/...)
- We introduced notif tabs (https://devrant.com/rants/1037456/...), which make it easy to filter your in-app notifications by type
- @AlexDeLarge became the first devRant user to hit 50,000++ (https://devrant.com/rants/885432/...), and @linuxxx became the first to hit 75,000++
- We made an April Fools joke that got a lot of people mad at us and hopefully got some laughs too (https://devrant.com/rants/506740/...)
- We launched devDucks!! (https://devducks.com)
- We got rid of the drawer menu in our mobile apps and switched to a tab layout
- We added the ability to subscribe to any user's rants (https://devrant.com/rants/538170/...)
- Introduced the post type selector (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...) (which will be used for filtering - more details below)
- Started a bug/feature tracker GitHub repo (https://github.com/devRant/devRant)
- We did our first ever live stream (https://youtube.com/watch/...)
- Added an awesome all-black theme (devRant++) (https://devrant.com/rants/850978/...)
- We created an "active discussions" screen within the app so you can easily find rants with booming discussions!
- Thanks to the suggestion of many community members, we added "scroll to bottom" functionality to rants with long comment threads to make those rants more usable
- We improved our app stability and set our personal record for uptime, and we also cut request times in half with some database cluster upgrades
- Awesome new community projects: https://devrant.com/projects (more will be added to the list soon, sorry for the delay!)
- A new landing page for web (https://devrant.com), that was the first phase of our web overhaul coming soon (see below)
Even after all of this stuff, Tim and I both know there is a ton of work to do going forward and we want to continue to make devRant as good as it can be. We rely on your feedback to make that happen and we encourage everyone to keep submitting and discussing ideas in the bug/feature tracker (https://github.com/devRant/devRant).
We only have a little bit of the roadmap right now, but here's some things 2018 will bring:
- A brand new devRant web app: we've heard the feedback loud and clear. This is our top priority right now, and we're happy to say the completely redesigned/overhauled devRant web experience is almost done and will be released in early 2018. We think everyone will really like it.
- Functionality to filter rants by type: this feature was always planned since we introduced notif types, and it will soon be implemented. The notif type filter will allow you to select the types of rants you want to see for any of the sorting methods.
- App stability and usability: we want to dedicate a little time to making sure we don't forget to fix some long-standing bugs with our iOS/Android apps. This includes UI issues, push notification problems on Android, any many other small but annoying problems. We know the stability and usability of devRant is very important to the community, so it's important for us to give it the attention it deserves.
- Improved profiles/avatars: we can't reveal a ton here yet, but we've got some pretty cool ideas that we think everyone will enjoy.
- Private messaging: we think a PM system can add a lot to the app and make it much more intuitive to reach out to people privately. However, Tim and I believe in only launching carefully developed features, so rest assured that a lot of thought will be going into the system to maximize privacy, provide settings that make it easy to turn off, and provide security features that make it very difficult for abuse to take place. We're also open to any ideas here, so just let us know what you might be thinking.
There will be many more additions, but those are just a few we have in mind right now.
We've had a great year, and we really can't thank every member of the devRant community enough. We've always gotten amazingly positive feedback from the community, and we really do appreciate it. One of the most awesome things is when some compliments the kindness of the devRant community itself, which we hear a lot. It really is such a welcoming community and we love seeing devs of all kind and geographic locations welcomed with open arms.
2018 will be an important year for devRant as we continue to grow and we will need to continue the momentum. We think the ideas we have right now and the ones that will come from community feedback going forward will allow us to make this a big year and continue to improve the devRant community.
Thanks everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2018,
- David and Tim48
A note on devRant community etiquette. I've seen some behavior lately that I want to just mention since it goes against the rules of our community. We've specifically built moderation tools into upvoting and downvoting, and that is how all content should be moderated.
Commenting on rants that you don't think should be posted only gives them more exposure and unfortunately at times people trying to moderate content via comments and rants have gotten abusive towards other members. On the contrary, I've yet to see any of the people these select few members accuse of "ruining the community" act hostile towards anyone.
So with that said, I wanted to make sure this policy is visible, because commenting on other people's rants, especially in a hostile way to stop them from posting, is bannable and we really don't want to see it. Like mentioned before, that's what downvoting is for and it's much more effective since it doesn't boost the content like adding a comment does.
We take content quality seriously and while we haven't been able to eliminate reposts completely, we've made a lot of progress. For directly reposted content, we added the repost detector (https://devrant.io/rants/425054/...) and are still working to improve that and appreciate any feedback/ideas for it.
Like any community on the internet, devRant will always have some reposts and it will always have some content you really don't like. That's what comes along with being an open platform with very little moderation. We get requests to moderate more heavily, but we don't like censoring recent rants and don't plan to do that.
Most of the times people who repost content or an image didn't realize it was already posted. Not everyone uses recent sort and almost always they have no ill intent.
Anyway, feel free to let me know if you have any questions and feedback is always welcome.45
Hey everyone - just a note on rants about politics: we've had a long-standing policy not to really allow any of them. So if you post one and see it quickly disappear from the feed, that's why.
We've gathered a lot of feedback on this and Tim and I both agree that Facebook is ridden with posts about politics and one of the more refreshing aspects of devRant is we've kept it free of that. It's also an aspect of Facebook that many people I've talked to really hate.
Thank you, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.31
EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2017)
@trogus and I have had an absolute blast working on devRant over the last year. However, we're strong believers in only working on a project if you're passionate about it, and over the last few months, we've sadly lost some of that passion so we've to announce, with heavy hearts, that we will both be moving on. We've decided to focus 100% of our energies on our next product, one which we are confident has billion dollar potential: Semicolon JS (http://semicolonjs.com).
So comes the obvious question. What will happen to devRant? We wanted to make the announcement today because we will be officially shutting down the product in 30 days. So that gives everyone a full month to take in the last memories, look at those rants they really loved, and hopefully take some time to chat with @trogus and I about Semicolon JS and what we have planned.
With so many thanks and looking towards the future,
- @dfox and @trogus161
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
Tim and I wanted to reflect on the year devRant has had, and looking back, there are a lot of awesome things that happened in 2018 that we are very thankful for. Here are just a few of the ones that we thought of (this list is not exhaustive and I'm definitley forgetting stuff, so please comment about those!):
- After nearly a year in the making, the completely overhauled devRant web version was launched (https://devrant.com/rants/1255714/...)
- @linuxxx became the first devRant user to hit 100,000++! (https://devrant.com/rants/1157415/...)
- We once again pulled off the greatest April fools joke everrrr (https://devrant.com/rants/1311206/...)
- @trogus started making awesome devComics and http://devcomics.com was launched
- We added a feature to allow rant filtering by post type (https://devrant.com/rants/1354275/...)
- We made it so avatars could have expressions! (https://devrant.com/rants/1563683/...)
- We had a booth at TechDay New York and got to meet some devRant users! (https://devrant.com/rants/1394067/...)
- We made major backend architectural improvements - including spinning up a special high-powered-CPU web server to handle avatar creation and make the creation process much faster (https://devrant.com/rants/1370938/...)
- App stability: mainly Android - we fixed crashes, did a push-notif overhaul, and tried to continue making the apps better and more stable
- A record amount of devRant meetups were held, and we couldn't be more proud about that, and we thank every person who organized one! (just a few: https://devrant.com/rants/1588218/... https://devrant.com/rants/1884724/... https://devrant.com/rants/1683365/... https://devrant.com/rants/1922950/...)
We had a busy year, and despite some things going on for us personally and some setbacks around those, we think this was a very productve year for devRant and that we are going in the right direction. We're continuing to constantly evaluate feedback from members of the community to decide where to take the app next. We're fully committed to improving the devRant community in 2019 and we have a lot of ideas about how we can do that. We're working on some things, but we're not really announcing them yet, so please sit tight for those :) In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you'd like to see improved/added the most as we always like to get updated feedback from the community.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community!
Looking forward to 2019,
- David and Tim26
A devRant Update!
We thought now would be a great time for a devRant summer update on what we've added recently and what we've been working on.
Highlights since our last update:
- We launched devRant++, a supporter program for people who want to help us cover our costs while getting some cool extra features (a supporter badge on rants/comments/profile, reserved spot on our in-app supporter list, ability to edit rants/comments for up to 30 minutes instead of 5, and thanks to immediate user feedback, we also added the ability to post a rant every 1 hour instead of 2, and post comments that are up to 2,000 characters instead of 1,000!) We are extremely happy and thankful for the great response the program has gotten and we plan to continue to improve it using your feedback.
- We added the ability to subscribe to a user's rants. This makes it so you get a notification whenever that user posts a new rant!
- We added an "active discussions" feature (available in the "more" tab on the right). If you're looking to join a conversation happening in the moment, then this feature will help you discover those rants. It shows rants that have recently been commented on so if it's a topic that interests you, you can easily get in on the discussion!
Some stuff we have in the pipeline:
- More fun avatar stuff, including fun new OS/language-themed pets
- More perks for the devRant++ subscriber program - if you have anything you'd like to see, please let us know and we will try to make it happen!
- We will be testing some stuff to help classify rant types (rants, jokes, questions, etc.) in order to create a more personalized experience
- On that note, we're also going to take some more time to do some work on the algo as we haven't done much in terms of improvement since the initial smart algo launched
- Community projects page update - we've been slacking on updating the page and apologize for that. If you have created a devRant-related project and it's not on the community page, please resend it to firstname.lastname@example.org (even if you sent it already) so we can make sure it gets added. Sorry about that!
A note on community etiquite regarding voting on content:
We've always believed that one of the most important and awesome experiences on devRant is getting your content noticed and appreciated by others. If you enjoy a piece of content, you should upvote it. If you enjoy 500 pieces of content, you should upvote them all. People really appreciate others enjoying their rants and comments so let them know if you do! If you don't like content, you can downvote it with the relevant reason. What we don't encourage is voting on content that you haven't actually looked at or spamming upvotes in mass for content you're not even actually reading/viewing. While we don't encourage that, it's not explicitly disallowed so we won't impose any penalty for it.
What is strictly prohibited and enforced is using scripts or automated procedures for voting on content. Anyone who is caught doing that will have their account deleted without warning. While very rare, we caught a couple of people doing that this week and both accounts in question were immediately deleted once discovered. To be clear, this is the practice of explicitly using a script or automation to mass vote on content. You will NEVER be banned/deleted for voting on a lot of content manually, even if you vote quickly and on lots of stuff. We just want to make that clear becuase this is not meant to discourage people from voting, it is only regarding votes not placed by humans. So if you're a human voting on content, you have nothing to worry about, we promise!
Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or feedback on any of this. We love constructive feedback and in the past it has gone a very long way to improving and advancing the devRant community. And as always, thank you to everyone who contributed to the community in any way, we really appreciate it and want to keep making your experienfce better.
~David and Tim (Team devRant)
Introducing new Notif filters! Now on mobile, all your notifications are broken up into category tabs and you can clear each category separately. No more digging for mentions!
Also we just released a new image preview for when a rant is shared on FB, Twitter, etc. which includes the ranter's avatar image. You can see it by sharing a rant on social media, or check out an example here: devrant.com/rants/1036286/image.png (if you change the rant ID, you can see others)45
Introducing avatar pets & a new way to unlock avatar items! Pets include cats, dogs, birds and tigers. We know getting all those ++'s can take some time, so while all avatar items are just as reachable for free by earning ++'s from rants and comments, we now allow items to be purchased in-app based on the difference in ++'s you have to the ++ unlock value of the item. (To purchase, you'll need the latest app version)
Paying for avatar items helps us keep the devRant servers up and running and also is extra motivation to add more fun avatar items. If you have any questions or find a bug, please let me or @dfox know. Happy ranting!38
For about the last 24 hours, there was unfortunately an issue with the algo feed where scrolling did not show more rants. This has now been fixed.
One of our background queues stopped processing for some reason which caused rants to not properly get marked as read for algo.
If you notice any other issues with this, please let me know. Thanks!11
🔥 🔥 Release day! 🔥 🔥
devRantron has reached v1.0.0 today! Here is what you can do with devRantron:
1. @mention someone when posting comments
2. Filters rants with keywords
3. Add emoji when posting rants and comments
4. Get notifications
5. Browse rants, collabs and stories

Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially @Dacexi for designing the app and @sirwindfield for setting up our build infrastructure.
We plan to add more features in future. For example, searching rants, edit/delete rants or comments and most importantly, themes. Right now it has a dark theme by default.
Thank you to the users to opened issues on GitHub during development. Your feedback has helped a lot.
Whenever you find a bug or want a new feature, please open a new issue on GitHub and we will look into it.
Contributors are always welcome. I am still working on writing a article about the structure of the application, I will let you guys know when that is done. It will be easier for you to contribute when you have a bigger picture.
Relevant collab: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/46
We just launched our new stories feature! If you go to the "stories" section, you'll see only rants that are over 70 words and you'll be able to easily enjoy the best long-form rants on devRant!
Just to clarify - all functionality is remaining the same. The main feed will still show all rants. Stories just makes it easier to find fun rants that involve more detailed stories/ranting and helps give them some more exposure.
We hope you enjoy! Feel free to comment here if you have any questions/suggestions about this.10
That "WOW" feeling when your rant crosses 1k mark and is one of the top 10 rants ever... #awesome #lifegoals
Link to shower more ++s: https://devrant.io/rants/163332/...4
Wrote a script that calms the extreme use of exclamation/question marks and capslocked rants, do have to say, it makes it much easier to read many of the rants, it also adds small stats at the bottom of the rant
may sound like it takes the "fun" out of those rants, but it only triggers if the capslock is more than the lowercased letters
wish the devrant webapp was accessible from mobile, to use all them scripts on mobile too25
Update on this: https://devrant.com/rants/1641198/...
I was a little tired but made updated and currently getting a more natural looking tree.27
Rest In Peace My Dad. now he is going to follow my uncle. the best two person and developers in my world. as a lone survivor, your memory will continue to be remembered propagate through my life.
for fellow devRanters, Always love your family more when they're still in your side. doesn't matter how harsh, how bad they are; you can always find the meaning, the values life will give you, and that will be the best presents your parent will give you. Always. stay creative, they will be proud.
the short story of my dad : https://devrant.com/rants/1630147/...37
Welp, I just turned 18 :)
I joined this place when I was roughly 16. I spent nice 2 years here. :)
I saw more people join and have fun and not be toxic. I've made friends here and this community supported me like literally no one had before. I felt like when I was down, people listened and people answered. People wrote funny rants and posted memes which helped me out when I was sad and I didn't know how to rant about it. Everyone here is kind. Everyone here is cool.
I would like to thank you all for being here all this time and I hope to keep seeing all of you here for my next birthday :D9

So... yesterday was the red Moon and Mars was visible and so much more. I took a lot of pictures with my telescope. I also took a 4k Video for 5 Minutes (my storage is now full)
Picture from yesterday: https://devrant.com/rants/1591093/...
I'm a bot made by @xzvf.
My goal is to find all active users on devRant and
collect analytics based on it.
By analytics I just mean things like:
- Total number of users.
- Number of users with x ++ or more
- Number of rants posted in a certain timeframe
- Number of users active in the last day/month/year
THIS BOT WILL NOT TRACK INDIVIDUAL USERS!
Also, it will not ++/-- anything automaticly as that is definitely against the rules.
Disabled fucking arrows keys in vim. Life is hell now.
I will be posting a lot more rants from now on as I am learning vim so bear with me.19
I am on DevRant for quite a while now and I really enjoy it here. The overall atmosphere is great, as well as the community. (Yes, that includes you!)
Since I came here I've learned some very valuable lessons regarding work (conditions), annoying coworkers and programming itself. I like to think of DevRant as a huge ball of experience by very talented people, as well as a great place for discussions about a topic we all love: code. But lately I am seeing more and more memes on here, with titles like "I think everybody know this", "I think everybody can relate" and "Soo true". Those posts have no value at all and are (most of the time) reposted from 9gag or similar networks. Sometimes those "rants" don't even have anything to do with devs anymore, but are only here to farm ++'es. In the beginning I really enjoyed funny "rants", but now the majority of them just annoy me. It becomes especially annoying when you see the same meme three times in 15 minutes.
I'd be in for some kind of DevFun section, where everybody is able to post his or hers jokes/memes/etc, but the current situation just really gets on my nerves.
I hope that I am not the only one who thinks like that, because I really feel uncomfortable ranting about something I actually love.
DevRant feels a lot like home. Not because I'm a pro developer - I'll probably never be one. But because I get to spend time with "my people". It's like when I went to Dreamhack for work and after 30+ years of being weird there were suddenly over four thousand people just like me.
There is no shortage of online IT culture but devRant is unique. It could have become the usual cesspool of hate, misogony, trolling but hasn't. Somehow it gives me hope to se a place meant for blowing of steam turning out to be one of the more respectful communities. So - thanks people! Your rants actually make my days a little better.12
I see lots of rants about lack of sleep, working through the night etc!
People you need to sleep an average of 7 hours a night your body needs this to stop ill health. Working through the night/mega long hours for nearly two years nearly caused me to have a breakdown.
Please be healthy! Working Long hours doesn't make you cool or a more valued employee.6
Whats so nice about devrant is that you see more or less the same people from time to time everywhere.
In comments, notifications, rants, all that.
It's like a party full of nerds like you where it's actually fun to get to know people.:D12
I see software engineering mostly devolving to be simpler syntax, more widespread and reach more range of people, including non-tech ones.
work in progress, context: https://devrant.com/rants/1554316/... (see comments there, for more previews)25
So I wrote a py script that calculated the total no. of the word "fu*k" found in rants -
Here are the results have a look.
Although I expected more, since in every other rant people use the word "fu*k" :/
This is in context with my previous rant -
What the shit!!!
"ah... I'm sleepy, can't tolerate any more", and just go to bed.
While scrolling rants
"hahaha... So true, same happened with me.. bla bla...."
Doing same thing from last 1 hour 40 mins
Even not sleepy yet!!!
It's too addictive. Having so much good posts, much better than fb feeds.... Loving the rants... New experience3
I finally put the "blurred background system" on GitHub.
I simply called it BackBlur.js and I made it to don't require jQuery or any other libraries.
It's now on my new GitHub account: https://github.com/Norech/...
If you don't know what I'm talking about: https://devrant.io/rants/888497
If you want to help me to add more supported platforms, feel free. 😀16
Introducing my parents/sister to devRant. This is way more explaining then I thought but very funny 😅.
Especially explaining the word devRant, the principle of comments and rants and how mentions and tags work is a challenge 😆13
So I was trying to go to sleep and my phone buzzed around 11:35 and it said someone commented on one of my rants so i went and read it, checked out how high my score was. Read a few rants...then a few more...wrote some comments...maybe one or two more...its almost 1am...6
Can we, please, put some substance into our rants? Over the course of the last weeks the amount of rants of the type "%NAME% %SWEARWORDS%" has increased tremendously. You want tell everyone that (for example) Windows can go fuck itself? Great. But why? What is the story behind you're enragement?
Please make this place more fun to browse by sharing stories. Not just a random amount of names and swearwords.4
I think I'm doomed when it comes to posting the kinds of rants that get upvotes. The pattern I've noticed is that profanity-laden rants get more love than ones that are more tame. I was raised old-school, so profanity isn't my thing. Guess I'll just sit back and watch.6
Today a friend asked if I could fix her friends website, it is made in wordpress.
My reaction "hmm ewh wordpress, but I can take a look"
Then it hit me, my friend is a webdev and doesnt want to do wordpress herself.
I might get contacted about it soon and thus more rants may follow.7
So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!2
Basically finished the notification filter script* already, but there's still some small bugs I want to get to first, so in the meanwhile I created a "subscribe" button script**, that simply posts a pin emoji and "Subscribing to the comments".
On desktop I usually used to post a dot to subscribe to rant comments, but with the new people wave, that was often misunderstood (you emoji users won the evolution of comment subscribing, RIP dot) I'm sure some other people that use the webapp more often, will find it useful too.
* notification filter: https://devrant.com/rants/1424435/...

Guys i got 1000++!!!
It's not that i'm special now.
Just more special than others.
Oh I remember the old times when devRant veterans like @linuxxx or @Alice posted their first rants and I welcomed them!
I even remember that night I gave @dfox the idea of creating this app! "That's stupid.", he said. "If this app should be succesful I owe you some special kind of duck we will produce for some reasons I don't know yet!", he said.
But for real now: Thanks everybody for being a part of this and for bringing me so much joy!8
Continuation of rant https://devrant.com/rants/975261/...
I PASSED THE TEST!!!!! YEAHHHHH
Now only an interview left. Please....
If i fail this interview, no more tries.
Wish me luck.
From this point, all personal projects and requests will stop.6
Well, well, well, my new year's gift:
Someone is jamming thousands of requests per second, and NO firewall. JWT tokens that expires in 3 HOURS.
Now MORE THAN 40K stolen.
But, where did it come from? https://devrant.com/rants/4961285/...16
For the love of God, we don't care that you're failing to get 15 ++'s to get your sticker. Obviously, if it didn't get a measly 15, then your rant wasn't that relatable/funny/likeable. Ranting about ++'s isn't going to get your crap rants any more ++'s5
Recently been lurking more and apart from the new plagues the community is going through at the moment, I swear this app goes through literal anime arcs with random entities that rise up and cause problems, kinda hilarious in hindsight. I will say it's been nice seeing y'all's names and rants again. I know I also see everything in the discord but that's got a different vibe. It doesn't help I just fucking hate discord.
It's also been a weird experience looking at my old rants. I literally found this app as I was getting my start in development and it's crazy to see the progress and put everything into perspective. Holy shit was I CRINGE. Regardless pretty nice.8
HAPPY NEW FUCKING YEAR BECAUSE IT WILL SUCK WAY MORE THAN THE LAST ONE AND CAN WE PLEASE JUST FUCKING STOP CELEBRATING AND GET BACK TO WRITING FUCKING RANTS AGAIN?! BECAUSE I WILL FUCKING DO!5
So... remember my first rants about my network at my last ship?
Well... I had to visit them for an unrelated matter and found out that they are to pass general inspection the next week. Among the inspectors is a member of the cyber defence team. I took a quick look at the network, finding the things I'd expect:
- No updates passed to the server or installed since I left
- No antivirus updates since I left
- All certificates were expired
- Most services were shut down or unused
- All security policies were shut down
- Passwords (without expiration now) were written on post-it and stuck on screens
- ... and more!
I told the XO (the same idiot that complained about them CONSTANTLY) and he just shrugged me off and told me to """fix""" it. In one fucking afternoon.
I. SHIT. YOU. NOT.
The new admin there is a low ranking person who hasn't the faintest idea of how this works, and isn't willing to learn, either. They just dumped the duty on him, and he seems not to care. The cyber security inspector is going to have a field day. Or get grey hairs.
I told the XO that I needed at least a week to get them into working order (I have to re-set up my virtual Windows 2012 R2 server, download 2 years' worth of updates, repair 2 years of neglect etc.). The answer was what I expected:
"You know computers, you can do your magic and get it done in an afternoon."
Thank god I got transferred and don't have to answer to that idiot any more. Now, popcorn time, as I watch the fireworks.
Yes, I am a vengeful guy. I have told them, twice now, of what would happen. They didn't listen. At least now, with an official report on their heads, they just might.4
I miss devRant YouTube cartoons :(
We will be seing more in the future? Gosh i love watching the rants come to life4
Dear Dutch, Belgian and German (and possibly other countries) devRanters, a devRanter is organising a meetup so if you're interested, see this rant:
Thanks! (All credits to the organising person, this just might help to get more reach)9
As a follow-up to my comment on this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1029538 I want to share with you my new project: BinToBmp!
It converts any file into a beautiful bitmap image illustrating all bytes as pixels. Each byte indicates an index to a color table (very happy bitmap makes it this simple).
Useful? No. Fun to make? Hell yeah!
Take a look at it on my github page:
Print your favorite song and hang it on the wall or make a shirt from your latest compiled application. So many possibilities!
More infos in the readme.
Updates coming soon :)
P.S.: The image displays the converted jar.30
Several hours ago decided to quit my job due to insane manager (more in the upcoming rants) without a new job lined up.
An hour ago I got an interview invite from Uber.
WHAT IS HAPPENING
P.S. Anyone working at Uber? Did you have to do much LeetCode? I’ve done two LC exercises in my entire life. Not sure what to expect.10
Parents were awesome. Super supportive, gave me every opportunity. They were open-minded loving people who eschewed personal vice and property to give us a start. They never once abused any of us, and in a family with three girls, we were encouraged to break the mould. We were shown that women could be more than just support to our spouses and baby factories, and more than part time labor in family enteprise.
Thusly my ascendance to a life as an engineer was assured and fully supported by these wonderful people whose folkright earnestness never once inhibited their progressive encouragement of our success as human beings, not just professionals.
And if you believe that, I have a bridge for sale in San Francisco you might be interested in.
I wrote on this topic before it was cool 😋
I do love u ranters
Whenever I feel like I’m not good enough at my trade, I come here to read a few rants. While I am a failure, it’s so nice to know there are even more disappointing devs around.13
Someone should really keep all the funniest rants and do a standup comedy. I laugh here more than watching a comedian on comedy central.4
!rant but story
My quick and semi-ugly solution to save amazing rants and comments forever and more organized.
What it is and it will be:
- archive of rants and comments from devrant that I found very good
- the original ranters will be informed when their rants are archived
- the original ranters and/or the management team of devRant has the right to request the archive content's total deletion
- every single thing on there will be accessible by anyone anytime anywhere (as log as server is healthy)
What it may become:
- anyone can register and save their archive
- dev content archive from other sources
- dev articles blog
What it will never have/be:
- any form of payment
- tracking (I don't even wanna know how many users are viewing)
- non dev related content
I'm willing to create user accounts for anyone interested in very near future. So please buzz me here if you want one.
So far it's a website of Laravel + Voyager + bulma with very minimal custom codes (I had to write below 100 lines of code in total). It is on Vultr server.
I'm gonna maintain and update as much as I can on my spare time. Hence I don't consider this as a collab. However, the code is on gitlab private repo. I'll make the repo public soon as well. Any contribution is gladly welcome. 😄11
I used to kill some time reading devrant some years ago and I just stopped because most rants were basically whinny little teenagers that think they know everything, keepers of knowledge and truth, being clearly crying babies about “ boo-hooo my coworker is not using the language I like” or something they clearly still have a lot to learn about.
Grow the fuck up. I guarantee you that when you have a few more years of experience you’ll realize how little you knew and how great you thought you were when in reality you knew shit.
Hell, I’m on my 16th year of programming experience and what o thought I knew last year had so many knowledge gaps.
Friendly advise, be more humble. You know shit. Get off your high horse and consider for a second you’re not as smart you think you are.
With that said, there are some really good rants here. But it didn’t change much from years ago.10
5 more mins on devrant and I'll finish that project.
Starts project, *buzzz buzzz* new devrant notification. Oohh, I'll just check that notif. Okay, while I'm hear, better check some rants to get it out of my system. Just 5 more mins....1
"Never assume that data useless to your application is useless to all others - we are asking it different questions"
Privacy is dead because we could disseminate valuable data from crap if our lives depended on it, discarding simple key values for over analysed crap metrics every time.
Oh, and it's also screwing us over... if your keen know more about getting fucked go take a look at @linux 's rant about the matrix.org hack
When devRant crashes on my Windows Phone due to scrolling too many rants and still there were more left to scroll. I suppose a higher power is giving me a sign to head to sleep!16
The guy I was ranting about yesterday (https://devrant.com/rants/1243807), told me he saw me posting here... 😅
After further inquiry, he said he didn't read what I was typing or so I hope. He seems to be more quiet today. 😆5
I know my profile contains a lot of Light theme ide rants, but i can’t help but posting more of em 😜4
My worst devExperience since there are dev evperiences for me, was when I had to rewrite a pretty important tool to the new onlineshop we created.
My best devExperience in 2017 was going live with one of our biggest web projects I had to develop all alone and hearing only great feedback. My boss told me there were more than 30'000 visitors one day after going live.
It was and still is quite satisfying. 😎1
today is one the worst day of 2018, after this
I was looking through the websites which were made in the company last year, and while looking at a website I said: "this website is looking total shit, what the fuck is this".
Guess what, the guy who made the website was there and more worst he's my senior, I'm currently doing a project with him. He was not happy with this comment ( I thought the guy who made this left the company ). I totally fucked up.
Now I will search for another job. I can't bear this.4
It seems like there are more lower-quality or duplicate comments on rants these days.
Please, save me some time and show a little respect for members of the community by ++ the comment you agree with instead of adding a nearly identical comment and tagging the commenter.
Additionally, comments like '@commenter 😂' when the great comment is still at +0 generally don't add to the discussion and should probably be downvoted.
Comment if you think you can add something, not just because you saw it.11
It's official, I've come full circle:
"I assume you're not looking for a new opportunity right now, but do you know anybody that might be interested, or do you have someone to refer?"
Yes, let me do more work for you, even though you aren't interested in me at the moment. Shameless linking to a previous post which is the same: https://devrant.com/rants/5404347/...
At this point, I'm convinced its going to repeat until about 2050 when the entire software industry comes to a complete and catastrophic standstill.3
Swipe between rants so you don't have to return to the feed if you read more / comment
New AltRant update!
You can join the TestFlight here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/...
- Weekly Group Rants are here! Now you can finally receive news about and take part in Weekly Group Rants through AltRant.
- Updated the SwiftRant library to v2.0, an update that was long time coming. Thanks to @Lensflare's contributions and suggestions for the SwiftRant library, both of us improved the quality of the library by a metric fuck ton, and more improvements are still on their way.
- Downvoting is (still) broken. this issue will be fixed in a later update.
- Some of the layout in the Subscribed feed is a little broken. This will be fixed in a later update.
- The Profile screen's small title flickers in and out of existence under some circumstances. This will be fixed in a later update.30
brace yourselves!!! we are deploying this weekend... (expect more rants to follow as the deployment continues (or fucks up) )3
I've always thought the "can you hack my facebook accout?" rants a little exaggerated.
Then it happened to me twice.
For fuck's sake, is that damn social media site so ingrained in your puny little brain that you can't ask me something else? Is "what do you program" not the more obvious question?1
Happy birthday devRant!
I miss those early days which had more rants but still, to the best dev community ever 🍺 🍻🍻🍻
All these Windows Update rants and I haven't waited more than 5 seconds for win to boot in the last two months...2
Hello devRanters. I'm new to this community but I've already started feeling comfortable here. You guys are great!
I don't understand why there are more rants about front end developers. I hardly see any rant by a system developer or a security analyst.10
Alright. It's one of these rants that everyone despises. The help me rant. Now before you tell me to google, I have, but I want a more personal opinion on the matter.
I am fluent in JAVA, C#, C++, and a few more, but I have never done web development.
I want to get the fuck out of my current job (I got screamed at because I didn't do the PABX guy's work - I am a fucking programmer not a technician), and start a venture there.
Now I know that I have to learn HTML, CSS, JS -> what more do I need to know to code a fully functional website? I don't mind learning any languages, I like learning. It sounds naive and perhaps stupid, but I am asking for some educated opinions.
Thanks, and soon I will be the fuck out of this hellhole.5
I've been spending more time reading rants than working the past few days. Thanks for enabling my procrastination devRant! :)1
I see more jAsEd* rants again.
* a jAsEd rant is a rant which is doomed by multi-jAsE comments.9
Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.6
My developer career has ended before I even start. After failing to get a job, I have started a business men services company. Maybe in the future, I will include software development to the business. So no more rants from my side at least for one year.
Fuck you all fucking retarded companies who wants junior developers with the same experience of senior developers.6
Would anyone actually be interested in POC'ing an open source alternative to devRant? Unfortunately it seems that this platform is going to the ground with little to no maintenance and even pipeless.io giving 502s.
I wouldn't expect anything real proper of it but could be a fun community project. Would require some planning though and probably more than just the odd person contributing.
Context in the middle of this thread: https://devrant.com/rants/9889646/...39
Finally joined the 1000 club! And 5 more ++ on one of my rants and I'll get a stress ball. This week is really going well1
So... After this bullshit https://devrant.com/rants/1523838/...
Me: hey boss, so.. I made a list out of those PowerPoint's on Trello ( more than 50 cards ) , can we sit later to priorize them?
Boss: well.. We can but for me all those are important. And we are gonna have those other requests (THIS IS THE HUGE ONE) next week.
Me inside: aaaaahhhh... Scream to your faceeeee!!! I'm gonna kill you and use your skull as a fucking mug!!! Motherfucker!!!
Our deadline is end of this month :)3
Devrant is making my coffee breaks more fun.
I think we need some kind of new/unread thingy. I try to read rants but I miss some.1
Inspired by @COD4's rant here: https://devrant.com/rants/3080528, I decided to go overboard a bit and catalogue (almost) all my unused Humble Bundle keys.
Given that there was well in excess of 300 of them I decided a more structured distribution mechanism was needed.
If you want to see if any are interesting for you, check the repository here: https://github.com/kwilliams1987/...
I have 5 more months of Humble Monthly to do still but need a break now...17
Why I love this community : I posted this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1084912/...
And by once @Root wrote a comment about lmgtfy, I was looking for that since more than a month didn’t remember name and by once I got it without asking!
Thank you @Root and this fucking awesome community.
Hope to spend happy coming years with y’all!17
I basically fried my rc255 rfid reader.
Bought two more and got them working!8
I finally did it ! Bought a 10 Gbits network card.
(You can search prev rants on it. My internet connexion became almost unlimited and I felt that 2300 Mbits were bottlenecked by 2.5 Gbits card).
And yes, I have more speed now !!!!
Do I need it ? Nop.
But as long as my line stays in this "unlimited" mode, I want to use it !
3200 Mbits !!! Ping goes to 2 instead of 1 tho. With "old" 2.5 Gbits card I always had 1.
Edit : Added screenshot for lazy people7
It's funny to consider that my previous rant (https://devrant.com/rants/4510906/...) before I stopped checking this platform as regularly was about what the perfect job would look like to me
Because I just landed it today, people!
Signed with a very chill, medium sized, local dev company that appreciates me as much as I do appreciate them. Starting next month I won't be just a random intern (although they never treated me as such anyway) anymore but a professional developer, with even a slightly more important pay than what you (at least I)'d expect for a junior
Adios annoying courses and mediocre marks, now the fun begins!14
I'm afraid if I post any more rants about how much I'm hating this job search, someone might actually start planning for my murder.12
* You can barely keep your eyes open
* Reading rants becomes impossible
* You decide to go to sleep
Brain uses overload
* You mind is flooded with creativity
* You don't feel tired anymore
* Your phone is suddenly back in your hand
"Brain, why did you so that?"
Brain: "Because fuck you I guess. I wanna read more rants!"1
Is it just me, or is the rants longing for stickers and balls (sounds vaguely euphemistic) becoming just a bit too common?
I love some good stickers as much as the next guy, but wouldn't it be more fun to have them for something more, well, rant-y?
But by all means, keep ranting about what you think about, I love all of it.3
This is why you should make a knowledge database and never trust the internet to keep things
Two quality rants with a lot of useful information I favorited are missing, surely because their authors removed their account
Lesson learned. One more resolution to apply for 202112
My rant is that I low key hate devRant.
I'm 23, I'm an average software engineer, with some expertise in machine learning and with a decent job.
But seeing all your cool stories, skills and rants makes me feel like I don't know shit and everyone else is just more driven, skillful and passionate, taking care of a 1000 pet projects at a time and dominating their work routine.
Oh impostor syndrome, how I've missed you!
P.S.: I still love your rants, keep them coming.2
Oh I've had loads (and still have) of projects that got me to learn cool stuff! To keep them separate, I'll post some in different rants.
The thing that has helped me most over time (it didn't teach me cool things but it's very useful in general) is that, when api's have rare limits and you need/want to use them more often than is really allowed: you write your own alternatives.
I've especially had this with a geoip api's. Needed one for nearly every project but hit the rate limits with every goddamn service.
Wrote my own in a weekend and no rate limit hitting since then!3
Apparently I'm surrounded by morons...
For the past 7 days since I was ordered to learn react wich originated this rant https://devrant.io/rants/805055/...
I somehow know more of it then my team that is on it for the past month or more.
Looks like the "standard" is to pass refs everywhere instead of proper props/state utilization.
At first I was confused by the usefulness and credibility of it but after a literal 1 fucking minute google search I found it to be a bad practice discouraged even by official docs.
Wtf? No one read the docs?2
It's been around 24 hours since I posted https://www.devrant.io/rants/526991..
AND IM STILL FUCKING WAITING
And what's more he wants to start testing tomorrow morning and I'm an hour from going home and I still have to take the code he writes and attach it to mine and just ahh!!
On the bright side I've caught up on a lot of YouTube videos I've missed2
Are devrant servers dying? Algo sorting doesn’t load more rants and recents sorting is kinda wonky.
I tried official devrant app on ios and joyrant with same results.
This is kind of a test if I can still rant or not.11
I asked my teacher if i would be allowed to use lists in final exam. (If you read my last rants about him you'll know he has a fetish with arrays) He allowed it! I'm feeling so relieved!
(He changed his mind more than once for the last few weeks, but this time he made a clear decision and he will stick with it. He even promised it.)
No more fear now, I know I can do that 😁
(Hopefully this is the meta rant to kill meta rants)
I'm fucking sick of devrant.
New users posting shit memes with the wrong tags.
But worse are old users complaining about said new users, or just beginner devs from other sites
Yes, some people need stack overflow every 5 minutes.
Not everyone has the capacity to understand every documentation.
Not every documentation is updated or entirely correct.
Not everyone has more than a year or two of experience.
Don't be part of the dumb circlejerk. Just complain about your bullshit boss, coworker or tech.11
I scroll devRant more often than any other app now. Such fascinating tragedies and lol-worthy rants in here. I'm pretty sure I've shred tears using this app.2
Continuation of https://devrant.com/rants/4725253/...
So I didn't get the time to post an update this morning, so an afternoon post will have to do. Today's walk was just a little past 12km, giving us all some hope to get it done in a reasonable time. The first six or so kilometers were quite harsh with winds reaching speeds of at least 15 m/s, probably closer to 20. With the rain smattering like tiny bullets our morale was pretty low. What kept us going was the knowledge that just a few kilometers ahead lay a valley a few hundred meters below our current altitude, promising warmer air, and most importantly, less wind.
As we approached the valley we could see trees appearing over the horizon, a good sign as the Swedish Fjäll generally isn't very inviting to trees, and from this point on our walk became more and more pleasant. During lunch everyone could feel the feeling of achievement lingering between us, and another three kilometers later we arrived at our cabins.
So here I am, sitting in a couch in a cozy cabin. Most of us just left the sauna, and in an hour or so we'll have a great meal and probably some celebration. Tomorrow I think we'll just chill out, perhaps pick some mushrooms, and then head to the train to wake up the next day in Malmö, ready for another week of work. Who knows, perhaps I'll even have time to squeeze in another update.
Cheers, time for a nap.6
Fucking hell mates, for me reading the rants is more addictive than fucking 9gag was back in the day :D2
guess what - it’s my anniversary of first joining devRant. I joined exactly 0x16d days ago, and it’s been great.
ive learnt so much, made more stuff, and y’all are great.
id like to follow up on my resolutions from last year ( https://devrant.com/rants/364344/... ), and im proud to say i did everything except the 3d game (i was looking opengl and got distracted by opencl).
when i first saw devRant, i was on a plane, coming home. i saw a news article and decided to check it out, and when i joined i quickly realized i was the second youngest on the platform. one year, 316 rants, 2181 comments, and a score of 18594++ later, here i am.
thanks for this wonderful platform!20
I'm seeing a lot of these rants today and I just felt jealous so...
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!!
You can pivot to something more your pace like whittling or something...
@dfox suggestion, when I'm in the "Top Rants" section, can it be able to swipe left or right to change the tabs Day, Week, Month, All. It would be more efficient to see other rants 😉3
So after 5 months of complaining and ISP denying that the modem was at fault for the issues ("because they'd get more complaints if it was") while trying to rip us off as well, they finally gave in to sending us one of the modems "intended for their business users".
Low and behold... I haven't had any issues yet in the past few days (as opposed to having issues between 3 and 8 times a day).
Nah lads, surely wasn't the piece of shit old modem that is known to have a severe design flaw right? :^)
Must have been my router and devices behind it right? :^)
I swear my co worker said we were meeting at the data center at 10pm all week! I call him and he says 10:30. Wtf?!!! Well guess I got some time to read more rants.2
Can't we just write rants in html? I mean I'm enjoying devRant really well so far but adding html tags and so would make me love it here even more13
Building on https://devrant.com/rants/1654019/...
It's coming along nicely, I've been working on different themes and I'm still making the tree more natural.
Next is to make the number of branches each time more random, and then I'll maybe add leaves. I might even add a day/night cycle, but we'll see once the code is further along and the automatic background updater is made.4
In relation to https://devrant.com/rants/1643249/...
The tree has started!
The lovely pycairo package was super easy to pick up, and I made a rather shitty looking fractal tree with it!
Next step is to figure out a color scheme I like, and to make the tree look more natural/better.
It's happening guys3
!rant is a logic operator, right? As in NOT rant. So why do I so often see them on actual rants?
And for that matter, who cares? If there's a [Read More] tag, you'll click if you want, regardless.
Why is this a thing?8
After seeing so many rants about firefox quantum, I decided to give it a try. And now I am stuck at this screen for more than an hour. Is it windows or firefox? Guess, I'll have to look for the full installer.11
Tomorrow's my first day as an SRE intern.. wish me luck fellow devs and engineers :)
More DevOps rants coming in the future with my best mate @tahnik who is also starting his software engineering internship on the same day coincidentally in a different company2
I've come back to devRant after, don't know, 2 years, and I get the feeling that this place is much more... hostile than I remembered.
I understand that this is a place to let out frustrations and vent a bit, or post stories and stuff, but I browsed the comments of a few rants, and I'm surprised at how many times I see friction between users, and insults thrown around.
Maybe I shouldn't have come back here8
I'm attending more meetings than I ever thought was possible. Low-key kinda miserable right now. Shout-out to my younger self:
Is it just my preview or are there more rants with the topic "lazy"?
It's almost like devRant is trying to tell me something. 😐
I started doing teaching assistance in an Introduction Course to R (for the 3rd year in a row); for the big majority of them, this is the first course where they learn some basics of coding.
Now, I know many of us were the same when we started, but sometimes I wonder... have I ever really been as lost as some students? I mean, I had to teach to a student how to move a .txt from the downloads folder to another folder. Wasn't this supposed to be the digital generation?
Even my code is never as frustrating as teaching a programming language... I forecast more rants in the following days!8
Come on devRant! I’m getting really annoyed when clicking on rant that has [read more] at the end since it is a gamble to kill this iOS app you have made. Every ~5th click I get app terminated. Then after I reenter the app, I lost where I was. Thats why I ++ all the rants I have read, even those who don’t deserve it :), so I can scroll quickly and see which are not ++’ed.3
How do I exclude most non-programming related posts from my feed?
I don't want to see Facebook-like topics about weather and housing in my Devrant client.
I know I can use the toggle switch to exclude tags - and I have excluded some (like Jokes/Memes) - but the non programming rants keep coming.
Any tips on more tags to ignore?9
I just read some of my old rants and it's no wonder I don't have more likes. Even I had trouble figuring out what I was talking about.4
Heya devRant people, I haven't been here for a while so I think I may have lost the touch with my rants. But no matter.
Ok, here I go.....
FUCK NUGET AND FUCK VISUAL STUDIO, THE FACT THAT IT KEEPS REDIRECTING A REFERENCE TO THE FUCKING AZURE SDK IS PISSING ME OFF. EVEN MORE SO THAT WHEN I RENAME THE FUCKING .DLL ON THE AZURE SDK SO IT DOESN'T REFERENCE IT, IT JUST DOeS NOT FUCKING RECOGNIZE ANY FUCKING .DLL I POINT IT TO, EVEN IF THE PATH IS CORRECT.
FIX YOUR SHIT MICROSOFT.
(Sorry for caps, I'm just really frustrated.)
Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.10
skyRant, an unofficial devRant client has received a new update!
You can now read devRant's unofficial magazine in the app! Plus, view the latest matrix messages. The user interface has been updated too! [and more]
Read on it over on kbin.melroy https://kbin.melroy.org/m/drbboard/... or even in the new skyRant magazine page!
Note: any previous version of skyRant must be uninstalled before updating. Download from here: https://devrant.com/rants/6573682/...
here's a preview!1
Continued from https://devrant.io/rants/918357
Made the switch
I think I'll be saying bye to Atom. VSCode seems to be far more snappier.
The transition was pretty painless too. Vim and eslint integration seems to work just fine.3
Reposting this rant for more visibility. I do not like to repost, but this is really important, people's privacy is threatened.
Just came across a few rants blaming coursework, which doesn't have anything to do with programming. To them I wanna say two things:
1. Programming is modelled on everything other than programming. So it helps to know a bit about that 'everything'.
2. The famous author James Altucher has had 14 careers in 25 years. Not 14 jobs. 14 careers, including photography, authorship, entrepreneurship, finance planning, and more.
So stop bitching and eat your frog/broccoli.7
Sort of follow up to: https://devrant.com/rants/1351833/...
Now I can turn on/off my PC over the Internet. A little hacky but it works like a charm.
I'm using an Arduino IDE compatible ESP-12E with on board WiFi and a homemade optocoupler (LED + photoresistor).
Hopefully more projects like these are coming 🤗4
(https://devrant.com/rants/1629853/...) An update to my rant.
So my cool team lead and a fellow dev are putting down their papers next week.So thats 3 folks out of your team of 5 leaving . Lets see how our manager handles this by hiring more underpaid interns half of whose work I did and ends up telling me its not "talent" that matters but your "Attitude" .Well fuck your attitude Mr.manager I've already got 3 offers.1
I was away from devRant for more than six months. It is good to be back. How I missed this!
Just spent hour browsing through the rants. So refreshing. Also so many improvements and new features to devRant, developers are busy.3
Update to https://devrant.com/rants/1415880/...
After numerous emails back and forth my colleague finally came to the conclusion that the customers WSUS is responsible (i might accidentally forgot to mention that in my original mail, oops :) ) but also blamed one of my other colleagues for enabling deduplication on the servers so he can't reliably tell wherever a hard drive is full. (??!?)
But anyway, no beeing sorry for him beeing wrong and impulsively blaming and disabling my scripts, because of course he's not.
I really god damn hate this guy. Were it not for this beeing devRant with a focus on devs i'd have a lot more stories of this special snowflake.1
Stuxnet's job quest part 3:
(TLDR for the two parts: I'm interviewing for a job at the tech support center at my uni. Had a phone interview last week, questions like they asked below.)
So they called the me Wednesday and asked to set up a face to face interview. I go in on Wednesday for the interview.
What kind of questions should I expect? Similar to the same ones asked during a phone interview, such as:
• If you could be anyone, who and why?
• What do you know about us?
• Steps you'd take to troubleshoot issues?
• Explain a virus to a technologically illiterate person.
Or are the face to face questions more in depth and I should prepare a bit more?2
I switched my job a few months ago.
And now instead of having daily rants in our team lead's channel on slack on how I wish to inflict physical harm on one of my interns (and I'm talking interns that would just interrupt a daily to make their breakfast), and having something to bitch about because our method of version control was using the IDE's history.
And that I came on here to make another post about the times that I brought up that we should address our technical debt, and only being met with "we don't have technical debt" by our CTO.
I now have a good dev environment, with also a lot more trust given to the employees, where I actually don't have much to complain, and 0 reason to really post rants about my work here :D
(and the previous company I worked at got sold and merged with another, so I jumped that ship in time :P)
After 2 weeks of ranting I have honestly ran out of rants.
Either my life as a dev is too good or I'm clearly not coding enough.
The later seems more plausible.
Reading IE rants on here and I'm confused.
If a client/boss asks to have something work in ie 8, for example, why can't you just say...
"No, it'll waste a hundred hours in Dev time, costing you at least 5 grand or more. please have your users upgrade to the latest browser, it takes them five minutes."
Or am I just naive
Just... Why can't you say that.8
Bumblebee Status, as requested in https://devrant.com/rants/2248495/...
Arch Linux, i3 wm, bumblebee-status. i3 config open in window.
Can't wait to bloat it up even more with a pomodoro timer and custom stuff!
(music: Bach: Prelude and Fugue No 11 from The Well Tempered Clavier Book 2, played by Walter Giesking, so highbrow lol)3
Continuing the trend of devRant stressball entering places! Previous attempt: https://devrant.com/rants/6483141
Within FSF conference, LibrePlanet 2023, there is a temporary Minetest server. More info and art: https://techhub.social/@vintprox/...2
Quick question/update over a previous rant.
My netbook battery status was always 100% on Lubuntu 18.10, I switched to Xubuntu and the same happens, but it reports correctly with Puppy Linux (old version). I thought the problem was in the battery itself, but now I think it's due to some broken drivers in newer version of Debian-based distros, or it is a bug in newer Linux kernel. But since I have no time to spend on a spare netbook, I'm not willing to test more options.
Anyone has a clue? 🤔
Is it just me or does anyone else hate the "MORE RANTS" feature/option of Devrant.
Can't we simply have a scrolling featuring with never-ending set of Rants the same way as reddit does??
:( :( :(3
Referring to this, about best programming languages,
I’m more disturbed about Go didn’t make the list. At all.1
Have plenty of rants with enough ++ but I haven't requested stickers yet. Because i don't want to put them on something that i will end up throw away anyway. Besides from my gf, there is notting I'm attached to.
In this electronic age i which there was something more useful.
- email forward for email@example.com
- custom profile fields
Just don't see the fuss over stickers. Maybe when i was 12 but that's 2 decades ago. But then again. If there were no rewards, it wouldn't really make a difference for me.9
Was going through my rants and started deleting ones that I thought were dumb. There were more than a handful. What I did *not* know was that your +1 status doesn't keep past +1's. If you delete a rant - those +1's go away...lol serves me right for posting sub par rants in the first place, dont you think? 😝2
Update on my devRant client SwiftUIRant:
I’m experimenting with some UI changes compared to the official app.
* vote buttons are laid out horizontally and placed above the rant to not waste space on the left side.
* comments count shows 0 comments instead of disappearing.
* rants are not cut off but visible in full length (I plan to add a toggle setting for that)
* creation date/time is present in the feed
* date/time formatter uses the current system region and the language english. So no more awkward American dates for non American users.
What do you think?17
Dev rant needs to work more on their algos to show rants! Since I posted one bout php , every other rant I see is bout php now and I think I just shot in my feet with this rant 😂oh whatever.5
Is it just me, or are ++' much easier to get by nowadays? Back, in my early dR days, you saw one, maybe 2 posts with more than 50 ++. Numbers over 100 meant that it is definitely worth reading. And now, almost every second rant has got 50 ++ and more, and TBF most aren't even that quality rants that they used to be.2
If ever @dfox rants here of issues he may be facing with devrant I guess it's safe to say with all the devs here... we'd me more than glad to help
@dfox @trogus would you guys mind sharing some statistics on devRant? I've been very curious about the following metrics:
- Daily active users
- Weekly active users
- All time rants count
- Monthly comments count
- Total users count
Thanks for reading and thanks even more for making this beautiful platform 😃9
I’m currently working on the profile view in JoyRant, which turns out to be much more work than I thought.
Anyway, after many iterations on the appearance, I’m now finally satisfied about how it looks and works. Especially the category picker (Rants, ++’s, Comments, Favorites).
What do you think? Do you like it?4
Ok so some of you have probably seen my previous rants about my computer science teacher and our project but I'm just going to summarize all of them and share with you more of my pain.
1. He edits in the production environment. Its a laravel project and he is creating test database migrations IN THE PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT AND SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH FROM MASTER AND DEV.
2. He edits in vim and doesn't follow codestyle even though I printed him off a piece of paper and emailed it to him.
3. He doesn't have any ethic when it comes to more complex things like laravel homestead.
4. He doesnt want me to release features even though he takes really long to do them.
While I love vim and it is my editor of choice, some things should be done in an ide. This is really annoying me and I'm really just considering handing him the project if he can't follow basic outline.6
I NEED MORE ANIMATED RANTS!
no please make more of them they were amazing, especially the GODDAM SOUNDS AT THE BEGINNING AND THE END! SO FUCKING AMAZING!3
When you are listening music and reading devRant, the only thing you concentrate on is reading. Because sometimes rants are more interesting than your music. 😀1
Bug (or feature ?) report
I don't know if it's a bug, a feature, and something that just happens to me.. When I view someone's profile and I want to scroll down to see the rants, the "first scroll" stops at the end of the profile. Then I can scroll down more. And after, if I want to see the profile again I can't scroll up. I ended up finding out that tapping the username lets us see the profile again. I'd like to point this out because the behavior seems kinda weird to me, I don't know what others think about it5
In reference to https://devrant.com/rants/2340071/...
I feel like the elf on the shelf.
Maybe I need more elfpussy at work.
I mean, while at santas workshop. These workplace benefit man, just aren't cutting it.
Ms. Claus just ain't doing it for me no more.
Half chub is best I can do. Fedex won't ship little blue pills to the north pole this time of year. Doctor won't prescribe any more either. Says "you have a problem john."
No shit doc! I ran out of my god damn dick pills and have to code my little elf fingers off in order to make MurderSimulator 9, VA-Denied-My-PTSD Claim DLC Game of the Year edition for Santa's evil subsidiary, Activision.
Chinese sweat shops got nothing on north pole gulag elf slave farms!
IPhone speech to text has come a long way. Definitely has improved. Real-time dictation rather than batching it.
I am currently doing approximately 50 percent of my rants by voice. In fact the rank you are reading I did by voice.
You can easily do punctuation such as a period, new paragraph, new line, caps and lower case. The speech recognition is excellent even with my New York accent and it learns the more you use it. Rarely does it get a word wrong.
Editing still has to be done manually and is a pain but that may change as dragon already allows you to do in-line editing. iOS speech to text has already surpassed dragon in some facets.
I do have to press the add new and post buttons at this Time to post my rants. But that may change as the enhanced dictation on the map allows you access to specific commands.
I will keep you informed of progress and I will be testing on android over the next few days as well.4
My partner just told me that the guys that will "take care" of a project that we developed (see this rant https://www.devrant.io/rants/69328) apparently don't know anything about Android or iOS because our ex-client emailed him asking some questions on behalf of the new team like what is Swift and on what language do you develop for Android.
What bothers me more is that apparently we are too expensive but they are planning to get rich 😒
So at the interview this past Friday, they basically said I got the job and they'll send the paperwork. So then yesterday, I got an email saying "we offering x and can review for a 'more feasible' offer after pronation"
Now previously in this story I mentioned that they were offering 47% of what I was making before but it I really need the work. Now they want me to take even less than that. I think that's actually really dickish since numbers were already discussed and with what they offered I'd actually be loosing money!
They said I could be completely remote(I guess to try and justify paying me less) but it's still not good enough and don't actually want to be 100% remote straight off the bat. I've told them I can't take a cent less than the number first discussed and they said they'll need a few days to discuss it which is an additional frustration as I wanted to start on 1st Oct (tomorrow at time of writing) and they wanted me to start on the first as well.
Basically I think the devs like and want me but the bean counters are trying to save every last penny they can. I think they'll probably agree to pay the original amount but only start me in after a while so they can pro-rata the first month and still give me what basically amounts to loose change.
I really wanted this one to work out as I got good vibes from the devs and I am just so tired of looking and dealing with full of crap recruiters7
# continuation of https://devrant.io/rants/2195230
I replied, that I need the pictures as seperate jpg/png files and that he should upload it somewhere for me to access them.
and well, he did - i was suprised ... BUT
he srsly just did screenshots of these pictures from whithin the pdf file - ON HIS PHONE.
u have ever seen an apple phone these days? those with the missing home button? yeah, you have a digital on screen overlay home button now. and guess - it is in every picture.
I dont care any more. it goes online as is....
tiny, pixelated pictures with beautifull shiny white on-screen home button on them. this is how we roll these days!2
It's been a full month. Today's my last with Debian.
Funnily enough, I was so looking forward to switching off from Ubuntu, but I'm almost sad switching away from Debian.
Which is kinda weird for me, before that I kinda assumed they'd be the same thing, and "If you see one you see all the rest"
Apparently I was wrong. I thought Ubuntu being "Debian based" basically just means "Debian with extra steps"
But holy fuck was Debian just more stable and less annoying.
Tomorrow: Elementary OS. Have a few friends who are Apple fans, and use Macbook with macOS as their main system, so I wanna try elementary to see if it's worth suggesting in case they ever get tired from Apple.1
a few ideas for the future:
1) When you have just unlocked the ability to use a new item for your avatar send a notification i.e.
"XXXXXX just +1 Your comment, you can now get a pet tiger!"
"XXXXXX just +1 Your comment, you can now choose a new t-shirt"
2) Rant categories, i.e. Clients, colleagues, OS, jokes, !rant etc...
3) the ability to view more then the last 30 rants of a users profile1
Had some great feedback on my discrete interface for devRant.
I just published a new version on: http://www.jsrant.com/
Now you can actually load more rants and select the sorting method.6
this is a very Stupid idea so i wont put it to the dssue tracker. but. how about enabling people to host their own devRant servers with their very own rules? this way, the main server will have a bit more breathing room and common interests could have a shared server.
the client Would have the current buttons + empty buttons that can be given a special function from server side.
also, it would be possible to view rants from multiple servers (color coded so theres no mixup in button functions) in one feed.
the client would come with the main server on first start up. the most popular servers would be listed in the settings. also, rants with 50++ would automatically be put into the main server.6
hmmm more rants about Linux than about Windows?
Actually analysing better, most of "rants" about Linux are actually expressions of love.
I can't find however any expression of love for Windows.
So the question remains open6
Following this rant\story:
I've finally found a job that I like both from the compensation point of view and the job itself 😁🎉
Can't be more happy.1
DevRant should have a questions and awenser in the more tab so when people have question about DevRant, jobs and other things other people could awenser, I belive that is a good way from keeping rants and memes in a place and Q&A in other place2
I feel a little bit lonely when reading all the rants about Windows 😞 Are there more people like me who really can't work with macs but love Windows pc's? I mean, they are fast too, and customizable, and fancy, and work almost always.16
That moment when there are no more new rants, you check algo, latest and read all top and you just sit there lookong at the screen...
(inner self: start working on your side projects !!!!)
Is it just me or is there a serious problem with devRant not loading more rants once you reach the bottom2
rant && !rant
I started my Internship a couple of months ago, but it didn't live up to my expectations.
> The good things:
- I have a structured internship programme, where we are given a independent project to complete during the internship, so all the work is slow and nice, so no unreasonable deadlines.
- Cool-ass supervisors (and smart too). They let us leave if the we don't have any more work planned, no sitting until the end of office hours, so go home early and SLEEP.
> The bad things:
- Shitty-ass people. But I've to deal with them once in a few weeks, so not that bad.
- Restricted wifi, but some websites can be accessed for memes. So, knd of fine.
- NO BRAIN-FUCKING EXPERIENCES FOR RANTING. I thought I would start my internship and meet retarded people and post some rants but NOOOO, someone had different plans for me (that 'someone' is LIFE, just in case if you are wondering)
- Kind of disappointed about material for rants, but 10/10 it's been a good internship.2
Jesus fucking christ.
I posted two rants today, both about trying to get my SD card reader to work on my arduino due...
After spending my whole day debugging, rewriting my code multiple times, cutting off anything that wasn't strictly necessary, writing my code procedurally, I finally decided to go and see what the library I HAVE to use is doing under the hood.
uint_fast8_t is NOT 8 bits wide on my due...
The bitshifts were "overflowing" (not really, just taking more space, which it had access to) meaning that my data was getting corrupt.
FUCK YOU FOR TAKING A DAY OFF MY LIFE1
So about that job offer (https://devrant.com/rants/3654950/...)
After a weekend of deliberation, I’m going to turn down an offer with a roughly 40% raise to my current salary and the opportunity to work with a language I rly like. Sounds crazy, eh? Maybe it is, too.
However, while the raise woul’ve been great, the job itself sounded interesting enough, and I didn’t think I’d pass on such a chance, I do value my current position, colleagues, the atmosphere at the office, the way - while a little underpaid - we are taken so well care of as employees by our management. It does make for an environment where going to the office and doing your job is a joy.
I think the company I work for rn has more to offer for me, and I have more to offer to them. It’s not my time to jump the ship just yet.3
Continuing my story from this post:
So today I've been working on building a backup for my dad's EOL PC by porting his files to a dropbox backup. He didn't have any backup solution to speak of and was running a taxable business...
I don't know what's more frustrating, my old man not having a backup when he knew he was supposed to or the 11 hours to back up everything on dropbox for him.
Time to make some tea and continue my REACT work with this in the background I suppose. :)
Follow up to this:
So we had today a meeting....
To restart the project, as the current state is garbage.
Turns out the whole team has after two weeks of being left alone with it - kinda like the rant says - zero clue how lucene works, what it does, what its for.
In case anyone of you wonders why some managers are micromanaging biatches, there you have it.
The whole meeting had more "oooh"... "ehm".... "eh"... and other fillwords just to cover the shame of not having any clue at all.
I'm really disappointed that a team of up to 5 people really thought they could pull a stunt of "fake it till you make it". Collectively. Really noone had a real clue.
Now to an interesting discussion: How would you devs reprimand them?
Just curious. Firing is out of option, for several reasons, e.g. law.
Serious answers, I would be really curious. :)
I'm feeling sad for the socks metaphoric in the last rant btw.
Even a cum socket deserves more dignity than them imho.6
I want to suggest a feature that can help/encourage people to post rants more openly on devRant.
How about anonymous posts, like on Quora?
Pardon me if this feature request is already raised.2
Hehe I'm back peeps 😭 missed this community so much. Hope I can read yall's rants and have a pleasant laugh :3.
Also, I've ripped apart my android app and I'm rewriting it using Flutter. Yes I did that. I don't regret it though. Does Google have more control over me now or less? I have no clue. The whole dynamic vs. Shutdown framework risk benefit balance out I assume.10
I see all kinds of rants here about how coworkers and bosses know nothing about programming. And I'm over here like, how'd they get a job? I feel like every company wants you to be a code ninja rockstar badass, and they're constantly telling me they're pursuing these other unicorns, not me. What gives? I don't know everything, but I know more than done ranters coworkers and bosses. Fuck.
Next personal fail ...
Turned out that wavenet is sequential so it needs previous step to predict next.
Quite obvious when you look at how people speak sentences, they hardly stop in the middle of the word.
need to think how to proceed next, how to cut sentences.
Watched deepvoice3 and some accent models from baidu.
I can generate 8 sentences at a time, each takes 8 minutes so if I cut between words and got last mels between words right I can get 1 minute but I need to store model somewhere.
I forgot my machine learning and speech synthesis skills from previous life, time to load more skills ...
Bug Report / Feature Request.
Just 2 things that bother me with the web app.
1. You can't modify rants or comments - only delete them.
2. On the profile page the web version does not replace line breaks "\n" with html breaks "<br>". (See the code on my profile on mobile vs web.
Just thought I'd mention them since I use the web app more than the mobile.5
Editing rants i wrote more than five minutes past.
Edited on my Huawei P8 mini lite with dual sim slot, golden color with 32gb sdcard.3
I've mostly taken a back seat these days. So many rants come in, it's a little bit more fun to just lurk now.1
My new favourite is
Got me out of a jam this morning. For more context see: https://www.devrant.io/rants/220317
Soooo I am an apprentice who just started his third year. Everybody in my team (3 ppl) left for better jobs.
I am now basically front and backend lead, teaching four new employees our restapi, web and javafx frontend.
At the same time I fix errors happening in production and develop new features.
I guess there are many great rants to come, so stay tuned :D
Going to write about things like tests that got disabled months ago after migrating to gradle, no documentation, finding out how to set up new development workstations with an outdated script missing important steps, management, print debugging in production and much more :)
Oh and it is not that bad, I learned more in the last month than in the two years before. (not saying my team was bad)1
To give my own old rant here a bit more background:
Cloud solutions offline for some customers, a bit longer than a week...
Bamboo release fucked up...
They've withdrawn the new release 8.2.0 and instead went for 8.2.1 ...
Well just because you had to give everyone admin rights in an minor release as they fucked up permissions, who cares.
So apparently there's a trend in non-educational games teaching kids how to handle real life crisis.
Last week I witnessed a 14 yo girl handling an anxiety attack of a grown ass person and she learned that from Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey - https://devrant.com/rants/6229469/...
Now I hear 12 years ago there was a boy who saved his sister from a moose attack by... taunting - a skill he learned from World of Warcraft: https://nextnature.net/story/2010/...
Anyone has more stories like this?8
It's been 3 days since I started my dev job and it's been pretty stressful. I could have posted at least 3, maybe 4 rants each day. Mainly about trivial bullshit that I let get to me.
Lets just say it came to a head today and that's when one of my bosses, who doesn't even really need to know who I am, decided to help me out. No reason why, just being kind.
I get home to find my other half had been making my lunch for me for tomorrow and had made dinner for me as a surprise. Didn't ask her to do it, she just did it out of the kindness of her heart.
It just made me realise that I'm actually surrounded by great people who I value a lot and appreciate more and more each day.
Bug in the Webapp
(maybe its already been reported before...)
If you load the new top feeds
the button "more rants" opens
This URL doesnt work. Its reloads page 1 of the "all" feed
don't work ("page not found")4
In my university days, when I used to spend time elsewhere than curriculum classes : "You're not getting anywhere if you don't get a degree in whatever you want to work with in your life."
Today I earn more than all the cousins of my age combined. No more rants from anyone, anymore.
I might not have a professional degree, but my family still sees me as a responsible person.
First day of new job. No more rants about Blue Prism, that's in the past now. New year new me!
Time to go back to rant against backend developers and their fucking Laravel.
First lesson of the day: if I see another select2 I'm gonna commit war crimes. You see this nice plugin for jQuery, you use it everything's so cool and modern and you think you're the smart one of the team 'cause you don't know you've just polluted an otherwise perfectly fine web page with the dirtiest js shit you could possibly find, just because you didn't feel like searching one more minute for whatever replacement for a drop down you can easily find.
You're not the smart one. You're a criminal.4
In a class right now. The rants are more interesting than what the professor is teaching!
How our professors teach:
Step 1: Open up a PDF of the subject book.
Step 2: Read everything line-by-line.
Step 3: "Refer the internet".
Yeah, because I don't have the book to read the shit you're teaching.1
If anyone remember my suffering with the devops team of my company, it just got worse, the dude who knows shit about devops and development got suddenly promoted as leader of the devops department.
if that isn't luck then i don't know what is, and in the last two months hasn't been any improval at all of the "new" architecture.
for more context:
I got a question about the devrant api.
I’m trying to query the 1000 most recent rants with the /rants endpoint. Trying to get 50 rants per request.
After about 550 rants queried, the api response starts being essentially empty, but the success flag is set to true.
Am I running into some underlying limit preventing me from viewing more rants?7
The moment when you really want stickers but you realize that you have more ++'s on comments than on rants...
Best boss ?
Well, on Friday we learned our business was shutting down, bankruptcy.
Other new recruits have had a 10 days notice. My boss had me a 30 days notice instead, and have been fighting day and night since then to find a new investor to buy our solution and hire the team with it, comforting me that I will be part of that team.
Feelsgood to have a boss having your back :-)
(see previous rants for more)3
DevRant is fun for me these days, more now than ever.
People create bot accounts, post content off of ChatGPT/post OG rants which we all shit on, except one guy. You know who that is.
Some try to force their projects on us, while being homophobic, racist and 10 other things. One of them grew on me, ngl.
Some are talking about me everyday but too scared to tag me, cuz they know I will blast their ass, and have, in the past.
Some people I had beef with, one of them is now a friend of mine. The others, not so much.
Should be a sticky post: https://www.devrant.io/rants/93206
Should at least be bumped monthly, for new ranters...
Click devRant to refresh, no more scroll to top, as @pelonchasva pointed out.1
Does anybody else feel a little sad when reading rants or negative comments concerning frameworks you've used a lot or maybe even more in case you're still using them?
In my particular case I just read some comments tackling Angular - and I do not want to say, that those comments aren't justified. We're currently living in a more than ever fast-paced front end framework world and Angular is simply not state of the art anymore.
So I do not want to start a "what's the best framework" discussion here, that's not my intention.
This is more about the feeling you get when you've built a lot of stuff using a framework, maybe you have still projects running on this framework or even contributed.
Either you do not have the time to switch to another framework yet or you're even still somehow satisfied with the way they're working.
However - reading all this negative stuff about such a framework is sometimes not that easy.
..or am I just some kind of strange, sentimental developer guy? ;D10
Update to Doomsday !rant which can be found here: https://devrant.com/rants/1000628
Hey Everyone I'd like to let everyone know that I finally found the original file for my Doomsday Algorithm and thought it would be fun to show you the dirtiest code I've ever written (I was 12 when I wrote it).
here is the github link, https://github.com/LiamHolmesEPD/... , and I'll likely update it will more cleaner languages in the future.2
So, about the devRant meetup(see previous rants), I didn't really hear anything about tomorrow, so just in case, I'm continuing with my proposal, it seemed more people were up for Sunday then Friday, so post the time you are free at on Sunday, along with your time zone(or UTC/GMT for privacy)30
As I will have a new job soon and it seems likely that it will be in network api design I wonder if you have good book recommendations on the topic.
I already have "clean code", "clean architecture" and "design patterns" in my pipeline, so I need something more specific on designing network (restful) service apis.
(This is a follow up to https://devrant.com/rants/1828903/...)3
Half a year later, absolutely NOTHING has changed. Except I have more work on my plate in addition to that big project and those integrations and shit… I’m fucked. So badly need some time off, but ain’t got time for that.3
New AltRant release!
- Transitioned to URLCache-based caching solution for attached images for much faster loading times
- Fixed many layout issues
- Finally added "more info" button in profile screen after 2 years of the feature being absent from the app
- Fixed many different crashes
- Added rant refreshing
- Added double tap to upvote on rants and comments
- Added creation date/time indicators on rants and comments
- Added comment count indicator in post cells in feeds
All users are required to test every aspect of the app.
I worked really hard on all of this to improve every single aspect of this app - from responsiveness to crashes and layout glitches, while also adding many features that were absent for a crazy amount of time! Please enjoy!
The last build will expire in a week from now.4
When seeing all those rants about freelancers whose clients just "disappear", I wonder why a library /framework that purges / blocks the application hasn't been made already.
Just to be clear, I don't mean web apps in particular, but more like desktop applications1
Heres a rant: Why do comments not show on my ++'d (Oh I see what you did there, clever) posts? I ++ comments wayyy more frequently than full rants, weird design choice.3
I wish we can re-share ( retweet ) some rants and stories on devrant. Like it's a need more than a feature.9
Follow up to this rant/story:
I have my final interview this week and I am very excited and the more I think about it I get nervous.
This time one of the senior devs from last time will be present, some dude from the business department and another guy who had no information on the internet about himself.5
Seeing articles and stories and rants here of other devs gives me anxiety when they mention CS concepts and algorithms and stuff. My college teaches IT and not CS, so none of that more complex stuff. I begin to fear my hiring potential without that knowledge.
Luckily, there's online resources everywhere.7
So if you recall, my last rant was about last minute, supposed critical-severity, ASAP due date requests being made, and me telling them to fuck off.
So today the boss' boss' boss called down and said a different task needs to be done by end of the month.
So now my current tasks get pushed to next month, and the person who needed their task done ASAP will now more than likely get it by mid june. Amazing.
And if you've been actively following my other rants, this is the same section manager that sends a quirky email out at the end of every night about what she's been fucking with lately.
I WANT OFF MR TOAD'S WILD RIDE
I guess now I have to rant more to unlock more avatar customisation, guys with +4000. Your rants will payoff 😅🤑
The best part about my new side hussle i discovered (a glitch in the matrix) is, no one is going to believe me that i earn $200/hour, and soon just over $1000/hour as soon as i learn how this fucking nextjs syntax works. Once this is set up I'll be able to earn over $1000/hour on autopilot, every morning when i wake up I'll see at least $8000 in my bank, money generated out of thin air. If i don't make more rants in a few days I'm probably in jail8
update on this
My first interview was kinda okay, I think I'm not in the mood to join them as well. They have to create a web app and they are considering Angular and React but they're more favorable to Angular which I haven't used yet.
Second went pretty well as per my expectation, those guys using React, Vue in which I'm more interested and they seemed friendly to me. Instead of stupid questions (tell me about yourself bla bla bla), they asked the only logical question which was more related to work and my experience. In the end, they asked me about my salary expectations and joining period, and I'm feeling positive about it.
Now I've to wait for next week to get a response from both interviews.1
I saw few rants about "working in a box". Isn't that legacy technique and we all are now working in open space?I have auto adjusting chair that costs more than my month salary, desk which raises when I push button, console rooms etc etc
Still some thinks that we are slaves of companies working 'in the boxes '. If you are on devrant and you agree with this kind of jokes I must say that you have chosen a bad place to work ;(
Idea for devRant:
What if, when someone responds to a comment in a rant, it "links" said comment? Like the "Reply" function on Telegram?
Yeeeeeaaaah, I know that would technically be considered copying, but Whatsapp copied it and no one said anything, so... 😒
I think it would make things a lot easier when conversations in rants become more chaotic.
What do you think?5
Update 2: https://devrant.com/rants/5446637/...
Not saying that my boss is wrong, but the way he gives feedback and teach me is just awful. Just today, a new colleague told me that one of the ex-team member quit because of our boss.
Anyway, the activity I was working on, I nailed it.
In morning connect, boss specifically told what he was looking for and made me do a live task and gave feedback. That made me realised what he was looking for.
I spent the day completing the activity. When I showed him, his jaw dropped.
He tried to pick on few things, but failed to do so.
He loved the output. Praised me and my persistence. Finally, the history repeated itself, and I learnt more about communication.
Possibly my weakest point out of all, where I was failing in interviews and had to fix that. Now, I got some pointers and will work on it to excel futher.
Yes, things were stressful, but I came out to be stronger.4
Holy shit. Do NOT open a Wells Fargo banking account. On top of their ridiculous password limitations, your password is NOT CASE SENSITIVE. I tested. Caps lock, no caps, a mix, it doesn't matter.
More info on the password limitations at my other rant https://devrant.io/rants/905148/...3
Fuuuuu I tried sideloading the devrant app on my Android watch but it kept crashing so I did a logcat over ADB and saw they use function that don't work on watches. So Damm sad I wanted to watch some rants way more sneaky5
i think i will start a thread of my rants against the new mnc laggards that i am supposed to join.
me vs my new job : part 4/n
so today is 29th, and after going through a major EXHAUSTING paperwork for the last 2 days (which included e-signing of papers from a literal govt portal that was down 90% time and i had to manually do polling on it to get it to work), i finally have the onboarding papers ready and i headed to office for laptop collection.
i was told that today the only formality that will happen is the laptop collection, so i scheduled all my personal stuff accordingly and planned to just goto the office, take the laptop and come back home. hardly a work of 3 hours, lets get it done by 11 am.
how the fuck did i forget that this is a sloth company :/
- i reached office at 10, and my spoc was not picking up the phone.
- after multiple tries, he picked up and told me that he is on leave and gave me the number of another.
- the other guy was not picking up, so i called him back. he said that the guy will start his shift at 11, so call him after 11 (?)
- i ended the call and bashed straight into office. asked someone where he sits, went there, and his mates told me that another guy was supposed to attend to me (hopefully i got saved by another redirect, once that guy had picked up his phone)
- what's more, the other guy told me that he had mailed my HR that i should be coming at 2 pm to recieve laptop(!?!) and laptop will not be ready before that.
- my hr fucking didn't tell me this and now its 11.15 and i am sitting in the lobby waiting for my laptop with no food, water or shit inside of me :/
with fuckery like this, I will either surrender and become one of the laggard like them, or become a rebel, just do my work and shit on their timings and redirects, and soon leave for a better shit :/

So yeah, kind of had to figure out the semi-hard way that Yew really isn’t prod ready yet (as they clearly state somewhere). Too bad. Or maybe because I don’t have the experience in Rust to overcome some of the issues I’ve had... so it’s back to plan B, id est Vue with TS. At least I got much of the thinking work done already, so I could just write the damn code - and the stuff I had problems with in Yew were all simple for me in Vue.
Or that would’ve been the case if I hadn’t decided to use the newer composition API instead of the options API already familiar to me. Damn it took me all day to wrap my head around it and I’m sure there’s much more head-wrapping to be done. Still, I’m likely done with this at least 2-3 weeks before the deadline, so I can maybe spend the some time figuring out the Yew implementation, too... not sure why, but maybe it ends up better?1
I often read rants, and I can see how everyone gives for granted that we have to overwork, work until night, work on weekend, work when the boss asks us, read the email, work until you fixed that bug, and so on. I mean, I don't see anyone ranting about this, I just see that this became the background of other rants, something that's so normal and we are so accustomed that we don't even consider it a problem anymore. I was wondering, is it just me that gives value to his own free time? That would rather read a book, watch tv or stay with friends? Or at least being able to tell a friend "we'll meet for dinner" without the fear of a problem blocking you at your job. Why should I be paid less than average in my country and work more, making the benefits still less concrete? I think I have a good brain and I chose this career because I love it, but if I could born again I'd be a doctor or a teacher3
So one of my rants got ++ more than 30, I was wondering like how long does it take to get those laptop stickers ? Bcz I have seen rants saying either they haven't received it or got after a year or so..
I would love to hear your thoughts about it ..
Hi @dfox I saw an android user report this bug recently as a rant, and now I'm seeing it in iOS (latest app and os version).
Scrolling to the bottom, no more rants load. The little message shows stating that more rants are loading, but when you keep trying to scroll down there are none.
When I change the sort order from Algo to Recent or Top, I can't reproduce the issue. Seems to be only Algo.
Have tried killing the app and restarting to no effect. I hadn't noticed this bug last week interestingly, but can't confirm whether that's just coz I didn't scroll enough.2
A better profile page would be nice, preferably with a picture and collapsible header area for more view room for rants that the user has posted.2
My family thinks I create proper value in a prestigious field of work and are aware of the amount of effort it took to get here and are also more or less up to date on what I'm currently up to. Unusual, after reading the other weekly rants :)
So, the customer I was talking about 2 rants ago messaged me back. He still wants me to create the script. He says: "you don't have to rig it on purpose, just add the option to make it more or less rigged. I'll pay extra". So he still wants me to create the website but just don't rig it on purpose. I yet again debunked the offer to just stay safe. I don't want to block his emails tho because he is a good customer, he buys a lot of my scripts.3
I just noticed something.... I think I read more rants if they're displayed in pages with a scrollbar instead of infinite scrolling in the app.
Guess the rewarding feeling of reaching the end of a page helps?
I just wanted to say that most rants I saw today were great. Loads of original pics and good stories. This, while others think devRant is becoming more and more of just a repost forum. Any thoughts?1
Building on yesterday's rant (https://devrant.com/rants/3110183/), after sleeping on it I realized that using groups was completely non-necessary, so I got rid of them and got a much more efficient (and faster) function:
Also, I've got these in a repo: https://github.com/chabad360/...15
I really hate it when you are reading DevRant on a public wifi network, and the network decides to drop the "more rants" packet, that you are blocked from loading more rants. Why do most applications stop loading more pages after a single request times out, it's really annoying2
How is the weekend going so far?
I am getting more rejections from a number of GmBHs in Germany
Previous Week :https://devrant.com/rants/9023980/8
Today, I went on the history of devRant that earlier how people used to post undefined rants. Even some who have knowledge can do it now!
I searched a lot about devRant on different media and got some bits
Here @AlgoRhytm asked a question on stackoverflow
I kept reading there chatlogs
Many people joined and left this community (Sounds too bad). We lost many legends like @Linuxxx, @Skayo and more and more.
But still there are many good one remaining from ages like @Root, @Jilano, @theabbie and more and more
I don't know what I am conveying to you people but I will try my best to stay tuned with devRant because I love it.3
Any suggestions for a good starting point for learning to do more with neural nets? Not interested in image recog so much, but would like to see the cutting edge of textual pattern recognition... I dunno, I don't even want my expectations to color this... whats do you guys find most interesting and enjoy playing with? Python is preferred but I'm grateful for any tips/links/ideas/rants you might share!
I don’t know how to start, this is in fact my first time installing this app on my phone which I got from last year. Even with my previous phone, DevRant was installed and it’s always been my go to app but I think I’ve been so busy with work+everything else, I somehow forgot about this community. I first discovered this 2016 which I actually got the free stickers(thanks @dfox).
Now I’ll make sure to be more active here and read through some rants.👨💻2
Following my last post, just looked up the Win 11 features....
Yawn.... Feels like more trouble upgrading than staying on 10.
Just saw this rant:
Then I remember an article about MS business groups being unproductive in remote work mode:
Are you guys more productive in the office or remote? If going a hybrid setup, what would be a good office/remote ratio for you?4
