So I've got a Linux related job (or, starting at monday). When people ask me what my new position is called, I'll of course tell! Well, I stutter sometimes in my native language. Especially with the letter L.
"so what's your new position?"
"Lllllll-lllll-llllllllllllllllllll"
*mother of god*
"lllllllllllllllllllllll-llllllllllllll*
*OH FFS*
"Llllllllllll-llllllllllllllllllll-lllllllinux support engineer!"
*FUCKING FINALLY!*
"Hey man, you got a new job I heard, what's your new position?"
*please work*
"Lllllllllll-lllllllllllllllll-llllllllllllllllllllll*
*MOTHERFUCKER*
"Lllllllll-lllllllllllllllllllinux support engineer!"
"ey dude, what's your new position? Heard you got a new job!"
*alright let's do this better*
"gonna do stuff with servers and customer service!"
"Ah cool! What system do they run on their servers?"
No. 😡28 -
New avatar options! New bg colors (yellow and blue), new hair styles (short spikey, mohawk, dreads), new shirts, new stuff to put on your desk, and new glass desk13

New guy: There's a memory leak in my code.
Me: You need to free the memory you previously allocated.
New guy: Already did that, deleted everything from my "Downloads" folder and some stuff from my Desktop.
Me: *Long Pause* Have you tried "rm -rf /" yet ?4 -
My parents recently got divorced and sold their house, so I had to go through all my old stuff and found this beauty! A pair of new bateries and it still work! Fuck Yeah!14

Things I've changed since joining devRant:
- started coding more;
- switched to dark themes;
- switched to DuckDuckGo;
- possibly switching to Mint.8 -
A little story that made me really happy. A friend and me was building stuff for fun with electronic in it.
A neighbor child (14) came over and wanted to join us and build also stuff for cosplaying. She is almost done with her stuff and waiting for the painting. My friend needed to program stuff for his arduino. She was watching him.
And now he's teaching her how to program. And she starts to understand that make me really happy to see a new little developper growing there ♡7 -
Ever since I joined devRant, I've been the most motivated I've been in the past 3 years to work on my personal projects and learn new stuff
I freakin love you folks 💞2 -
"Started playing around with C scripting, can you give me a hand with x?"
"Sure. Errr... this isn't C."
"Yeah it is, like the new C scripting stuff!"
"C scripting stuff?!"
"Yeah, the coffeescript stuff! You developers always shorten it to C right?"
😬😬13 -
The Dutch referendum about the new mass surveillance law is a go, fuck yeah!
Also, due to a some stuff, a delay is postponing the start of the mass surveillance to May next year.
A little more time to setup secure stuffs :312 -
This one colleague at my work.
I'm pretty new to a lot stuff and I stress out about some stuff a lot more than the other guys, mostly because I'm scared I might not be able to fix it.
But whenever that happens, I explain this guy what's going on and then, while making jokes, talking in a very calming way, he always knows to fix it in no time!
For everyone who does this, thanks for being there for the little/new guys :)1 -

I'm moving out soon and normally when the hallway is filled with stuff/boxes, the landlord doesn't like that and you might get a warning.
I take that quite seriously and thus always tried to keep it clean.
Now I'm moving in a few days, hallway is filled with stuff and the landlord told he doesn't like that at all.
I can't be bothered much, my new room is already available, good luck with kicking me out now 😋10 -
Realised this today.
One of the things I love the most about my job is the requirement to be creative and hackish.
Sometimes you just have to debug/fix stuff in the weirdest ways and this requires for me to think out of the box.
Something that's very new for me on this level!4 -
Free time... sometimes I want to program, learn new stuff and work on personal projects, but sometimes I just want to be a couch potato and play hours and hours of video games...4

When you've been a developer for 13 years and new kid comes in and shows you stuff you don't understand #kidsthesedays3

My laptop just took a full cup of coffee and didn't blink an eye.
Thank god for spill resistant stuff that works.
Unfortunately I now how to make a new coffee, so it's not all good news.16 -
Alright, with all the horrible internet freedom and privacy threatening stuff going around I'm setting up a new tor relay, hopefully 2gb/s.
Already have one running with an average throughput of 2TB/day but another one won't hurt, would it?
Who else runs tor nodes here? :D14 -
The security/privacy blog.
Get ready for a new blog post, dark theme and a new domain name today!
Sorry, I love to announce stuff 😊18 -
First step to learning Django. Wish me luck!
Trying new stuff always excites me and anxious at the same time.15 -
I've read so many stuff in english that it feels really weird to read something in my native language(german). Especially when they're using german words in their code:
public Nahrung mittagessen;
public Gast()
{
mittagessen = new Gericht("Wiener Schnitzel");
}
are you fucking kidding me?!10 -
YES ! I am Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer! 🎉🙌🎉
This was really a great journey for me, a lot of new stuff learned. I need to say thanks to all great Xamarin University lecturers about the great content.14 -
Just got a brand new car coming from a 1999 Honda CRV and holy shit the tech in these things is insane.. basically drives itself on HWY's, can start it from an app, does all sorts of weird stuff.. obviously it comes with risks of being hacked and all that but damn new cars are wicked these days.7
-
Since my last update, I got a new screen. We reorganised the office, so I got a new spot in the office (corner with no one behind me). Got a monitor stand.
I’m costing the Norwegian people so much. All this stuff I request, is financed by the tax kroner.15 -
This community really motivates me to master my skills and learn new stuff to become a great dev. Thank you!4

Was working in small startup with great people on new projects, but for very low salary and shitty conditions.
Changed job to big company with nice salary and great conditions, but people are assholes and have to work on legacy stuff mostly.
Guess you can't have everything.1 -
Overheard this conversation today:
1: look at this! My shiny new iPhone can measure stuff!
2: how accurate is it?
1: not very, it is pretty buggy.
2: how did the bugs get in there?
3: it is an apple so4 -
Turns out the small company I'm working for is depending almost completely on the new SaaS system I'm building, to appease investors and not go belly up.
I just wanted to move to another country and code some stuff, this is too much pressure.10 -
4 step process.
1. Loud music on the way home
2. Vent to the wife. Because she listens and is awesome.
3. Kill stuff in games. ESO or any shooter.
4. Sleep.
After all that the next day is fresh and new and all is good and right in the world.4 -
That moment that you start typing on your new ergonomic keyboard and suddenly notice that your muscle memory has nearly entirely adjusted to this new keyboard without you even noticing it because you're suddenly typing at full speed while you hardly could type any sentence an hour ago without looking at your keyboard.
This kinda stuff never ceases to amaze me!9 -
I FUCKING HATE PEOPLE WHO ALWAYS BUY NEW STUFF WHEN THEIR OLD THINGS WORK PERFECTLY FINE!

If you're an aspiring web dev, get comfortable using the command line.
Amazing how many new starters can't restart a service or tail an error log.
I'm not saying it to be a dick, it's just 101 stuff that'll save you loads of time.1 -
First commit message at a new job:
"This is to fix an issue where {issue} was happening because of {reason}. {Detailed description of the exact changes and the reasoning of every single one}."
Second commit message at a new job:

Refactoring
When wrote some abstraction,
commented out the old stuff,
replaced it with the new calls
and after it passes all tests
get to remove all the old crud.

I feel clean again.3 -
I always end up being too busy working on a new features that I forget git commiting every feature so I always end up comitting something like "lots of new stuff idk lol"6

Boss set me up for a last minute certification to prepare for next years new projects. Went through a lot of material in just two days, then had to take the exam immediately after the last class ahead of everyone else. Aced it!^^
What surprised me the most though is how much I still enjoy learning new stuff (wasn't even tech), even after 8 yrs on the job..4 -
A coworker that is producing incredibly bad code and refuses to learn new stuff was declared "senior developer" by my boss. And me with over 20y experience? I am just a junior.. and have to clean up his mess all the time. I guess it is time to find new job.5
-
Worked for the US federal government. Stuff couldn't be used unless it had been approved. Had to us Python 2.6. Python 3 was out by then. Basically anything brand new or even new within the last 5 years wasn't allowed, but was expected to make apps that represented modern web apps.1
-
Question: I'd like to choose a new distro for my surface.
Although I do shitloads of terminal stuff, I'm an eye candy lover. Debian based please :)
I can deal with problems myself if they occur.
Anyone any ideas? (KDE neon/kubuntu/nitrux/mint have already been tried)14 -
Online friends: "So what's your plan for new years?"
Me: "We will do some amazing stuff! This will be fun"
Online friends: "Great!"
*Real condition: alone, no plan, and miserable*
Who else having the same?15 -
Today, I planned on getting started with something different.
I've been thinking of learning some new stuff in Java, which I'm totally unfamiliar with.
So, I thought of creating a widget for devRant.
It is basically a small web browser which only opens up devRant.8 -
I just realized I haven't been using MacOS on my iMac for more than 4 months
I guess I won't buy new Apple stuff in the future😅
Awesome machine but I just like Windows more9 -
When you to busy paying for student stuff and can't afford a new Bluetooth headset.. Don't know why I'm studying software when I obviously should be a an engineer, duh..2

Google -> Niantic -> shit
Hate them for biting off more than they can chew, they successfully fucked up two of their games, now they are launching the third one.. Can you just fix the stuff you fucked up before you continue with new stuff?? Okithxbye9 -
I'm a backend (Java, Kotlin) developer and I mainly design & develop services and Android apps which consume these services.
My team in my current organization (I've been working here since past 2 years) just got merged with another team.
And now the new boss wants me to fix some fuck ups in their project which is written in C#, with some WCF and other stuff.
As this stuff is completely new for me, I asked for some time to get familiar with the environment. But the answer was a big NO.
As a result, "I've started looking out for a new job"
😡😠
Fuckin management screws up everything!4 -
Finally got a job I see myself staying in more than 2 years :) A boss that give us time to write / read blog posts.
Flexible work life.
Working with all the new stuff like dotnet core, docker :) -
This is random stuff.
I wonder what would happen if an innocent new user unknowingly reports a rant written by @dfox or by @trogus themselves.🤔
Maybe a beautiful post or maybe a nice email like
"Dear @... you might not have realized but @trogus and @dfox are the creators of devRant"3 -
How do working professionals find time to learn new tech? Work all weekdays... Shit tired on weekends this happens for few months and suddenly kids are b building ai and stuff and u just feel dumb.. how do you guys do it? How do you stay on top of the game?7
-
Kevlin Henney said it best. Old is the new new. Tech goes in cycles. Lambda functions aren't new, they've been around since the 70's. Microservices aren't new. Linux is built out of small applications that do one thing, and do it well.
So what can you do that is "new"? Different. Learn a new domain. You're front end? Do back end. You're back end? Do some DB. You're full stack? Do some ML.
At the same time, finding the time to do those things is hard. I barely manage to do my job with other stuff going on.
You can also try to be better at what you do day to day. Find someone that's better than you. If you're the best in your team, maybe see if anyone needs teaching.

Just wrote an article about how to code this with CSS. I'm new to writing stuff. Would love to hear what you guys think26

When you stop freelancing because clients don’t spend enough to keep you making enough money to continue freelancing for a living. But then they come back begging you to keep working on their stuff because suddenly they have enough money and a need and because they can’t seem to find anyone who can do it as good as you did. But even with them handing you new cash money all you want to do is not do that stuff anymore. But money.3

Most favorite: Intellij IDEA

What I found so far:
1. Updating Windows Store App UI will refresh running app UI without the need to re-run the app from Visual Studio
2. At work couple of days ago: Pressing Command + ~ will result in switching to different windows of same app7 -
Working on a new project at work; all_of_a_sudden boss goes:
"A client needs the current software to do this thing, can u do it"
Me: "Yea, sure"
One week later: "Yea, Im not feeling this, can we change this, that, and--what the heck is that?"
Me: "😑 aaaaa the exact changes u wanted"

New Year resolution 2018:
Actually read / pass at least 2-3 of the 100+ books/courses on professional topics that I bought in 2017.
And stop buying stuff I don't use.3 -
Dear companies..
There is a fucking difference between:
-pattern recognition
-machine learning
And
- artificial INTELLIGENCE....
Learning from experience is NOT THE SAME as being able to make conclusions out of unknown conditions and figuring out new stuff without any input.8 -
Why ? Why is there no time left for the cool stuff? Spending too much time at work - beeing tired- bought a new rasp-pi - it's already 1 year old - untouched @ home ... just why?
had holidays ... spent 4 days of 7 to recover - just slept.2 -
I hate backendphobia! It feels like so common nowadays. People scare other people with backend being too hard and stuff, and that feeling of scariness is something that infects lot of people. Please stop fearing the backend!
Yes, some backend stuff can be hard, but there's no good reason to fear it. I just hate it when I go to a new team and they all seem to be backendphobics idiots. I've build enough backends to not give in to the fear, pls stop scaring people.11 -
So this dubass left our company but convinced my boss to migrate our new stuff stack to react+firebase...
Already distributing my resume...2 -
Starting a new job tomorrow, old job was a software engineer working on mostly PHP with some mild Java stuff, tomorrow it is Java Spring Boot backend work. Should be an exciting change of pace2

Many people / engineers around me talk about trendy stuff like Cybersecurity or AI and show off what great encryption and neuronal networks they 'have built' ( I would rather say 'using').
I kinda get the feeling of 'Everbody talks about it - no one really knows what's goin' on inside (especially those guys who hate math and even algorithms).'
Am I just stupid or does somebody else here feel the same way? I mean people have been doing serious research about this stuff for years. And currently many kids are coming up with it as if it is easy stuff like the bubble sort.4 -
Management has been promising we'd leave .NET framework for 2 years now. Never fucking happens. A new ASP.NET project was just started last week and yup, OF COURSE, its .NET Framework 4.8.
I'd even be happy with one of the earlier .NET Core versions at this point for fucks sake. I have no clue why tech leads are so happy to create a brand new project on a deprecated framework version.
And yes, I have checked thoroughly. Our whole infrastructure works with .NET Core onward. People are just too lazy to learn new stuff.
Stuff like switching to .NET 6, actually doing unit testing, improving our CI/CD pipeline, refactoring problematic codebases, etc. -> all this stuff is the kind of things they promise me I can work on later whenever I'm so bogged down with work that I'm looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. All empty promises.
Ideally we should be on .NET 6 since its LTS and just stay on the LTS versions as the year goes on.8 -

I'm a Windows slowly trying to convert to Linux (except for stuff that you need Windows for, obviously).
Being relatively new to desktop Linux, which distribution do you recommend with which desktop environment?*
Any tips for newbies? :)
*I'm aware that this could end up in a fight that divides devRant :P19 -
Being a developer is a fucking struggle and no one fucking understands it.
Trying to keep up with new technologies and working with Project Managers that wants stuff to be delivered in no time is what makes you regret your career sometimes..
Maaan I FUCKING HATE THIS JOB!!!8 -
Every new framework be like: 'We are new and better and faster and better. Change quickly cause we are the future.'
Me: But whyyy are you better? 🤔😫4 -
Discussion Thread.
With all the frameworks and libraries available and game engines to develop games, its now easier than ever to build stuff.
With this in mind, do you think its necessary to have a core knowledge of how stuff work under the hood? Or is it okay to build upon and develop new stuffs on the foundations available today?5 -
Just visited my new office! Tech offices are the best IMO. Open office plan, fully stocked pantry, bean bags, and a lot of cool stuff. Wayyy better than my previous job where we literally had desks and a coffee machine.5

Me: *creates a new telegram bot*
User: Hey, compliments for the bot! How did you create that? Did you use HTML or other programming stuff?
Me: ...
The funny thing is that 1 week later I discovered that someone actually created a library to create your own bot with HTML and CSS too. -
Anyone have the experience where you are learning a new programming language and you are eager to do stuff with it but you need to use another one for your job? So frustrating!2

Do you also sometimes have these nights in which you don't want to sleep but instead want to learn new stuff?
Right now I have one of these nights again and I have spent the last 1:20h watching a lecture by a German professor about cryptography. Man I can't wait to leave fucking highschool behind and go to university to learn stuff I am interested in.5 -
1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.
That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.
2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.
That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.
3. Trust nothing that you see.
Bugs are everywhere
4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.
When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.
Good luck -
I wanted a personal website when I was 15. My brother-in-law sat me down, showed me Dreamweaver and told me "Learn this stuff. It will be valuable when you're older." I dragged and dropped and then looked at the resulting code. Then came sites for friends. Finally, college. I still learn new stuff all the time with each project. I couldn't be happier!10
-
Worked on PDF creation in PHP all day. Was really intrigued because I never did that before and learned some new stuff. Nevertheless it's pretty annoying and repetitive to build files in this format. So in the end of the day I can't say if I was productive.2

To those of you who don't know about this, if you have a Microsoft account, you can sign up for Visual Studio Dev Essentials with it. Doing that gives you 3 months free access to Pluralsights, which is a really nice website to learn new stuff. Do check it out.2 -
When you get lazy about learning new stuff...
I realized this is like a marriage and I'm not spontaneous enough anymore.1 -
Anyone else get a feeling that some tutorials are made for trolling purposes? Like, why write an article about the most basic stuff about a particular stack and call it a day? Why copy paste from the docs without adding any new information whatsoever?
Medium.com is the worst offender.7 -
Had a smudge on the monitor that looked like a comma spent about 5 minutes looking at the code before I figured it out. I was wrinting new stuff there and the "comma" kept well aligned2

I am creating a new language. Not like C# but a language specifically for plus, minus, multiply, division stuff

I have been lurking around here for about a month. Finally decided to write about how devRant motivates me. Whenever I read stuff I don't understand it makes me realize I've got so much more to learn. Happy new year :)1 -
I've spent many years in a bubble of 1 backend lang.. but when i started checking out other langs, I got very annoyed that each one has same basic stuff but with different syntax... Can we just agree on something? Ffs!
We really couldnt come up with unified syntax for -
false, False FALSE
OR or ||
def func function
And dont get me started on all the variations of for loops... Its like we are trying make our life hard
Looking at new versions of some langs, looks like they are copying new stuff from one another.. with different syntax.. thanks!
Nodejs trying to look more like she doesnt have callbacks.. while other langs adding callback functionality... Why why why?!2 -

Today I Fucked Up. I tried to do something involving hardware.
I tried to fix my mechanical keyboard by myself with no thought towards how electronics work. My first time using a soldering iron and trying to fix something myself.
I went from needing to replace one key to burning some plastic, failing to get new solder onto the parts to attach the new key to the PCB and getting solder where I didn't want it to needing a new keyboard because I think I've fried some stuff so badly half the bottom row of keys no longer works.
Fucking wonderful.
Guess it's time to buy a new keyboard.
Sigh.4 -
The feeling of never being good.
Even thou I am a new programmer, everyone I meet tell me the same stuff. "You will almost never feel good at something". And yes, I never do, even with things I'm fairly good at I still think I haven't grasped it yet. Always new sites and resources to check out, always new things to dig into.
Althou it is what defines us as programmers. To being able to learn and adapt. To explore and being curious, to learn and to advance.2 -
From the only tech guy (after co worker left) at my old job to 'the new guy' at my new job
Its a fucking flip lol
But at least I'm not dealing with a terrible ceo and growth
Day 3 and they're already trusting me with stuff and not treating me like a child even though I'm asking a million questions
And they're already discussing how I can use my actual background experience to do new unique things for the department rather than just bogging me down with instructions and "do it this way"2 -
I get in to the office today, and I'm informed that my ceramic origami swan (https://devrant.com/rants/1231342/...) fell and broke during office cleaning.
I'm now afraid to bring new stuff into the office for my desk2 -
Replaced a colleague's busted HDD and gave him the old one to copy over stuff.
When I came back, the guy was about to copy over the root folder of the old one over the new one .... And I mean 'drag and drop' not even 'cp -r' -
My senior colleague recently said "Don't go around asking for best practices, it's a waste of time! Just try stuff until it works and commit it".
We were talking about writing code in a new language.1 -
We have so much pl/sql at our company and it really sucks because the "young" generation of devs must convince the pl/sql guys to switch to some more powerful and newer languages like java.
But not everyone wants to use the new stuff or learn anything new. I mean there are some programmers who really appreciate that there is new stuff. They have no problem learning from the younger generation. But some of them just resist any change in that direction, and thats the much higher amount of devs.
Does anyone of you have such experience? What can i do against that?
Is that some kind of "i am too old for this"-trip?13 -
Nobody reviews my PR into test branch
The only guy who reviews it is the new senior dev who isn't yet used to how the company works, leaves comments about useless stuff and doesn't fucking approve
Jesus fucking Christ5 -
As a kid, I wanted to try new stuff. New programs, new games, new websites, new OSs. Those were the days when we had very limited and slow access to internet and cloud was still to be discovered. I had everything on my local HDD.
So one fine day I decided to try out Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Laptop.
I emptied a partition, burnt the image to a USB drive and booted from it. Installation went well.
Somehow I ended up deleting the logical partitions on my Windows machine. Not only I was not able to boot into Windows, my HDD was just one tiny partition. I cried my eyes out. That disk had everything I ever had.
PS: I recovered everything by restoring the partitions.5 -
So the infra folks finally considers OpenStack after doing their own thing that is prone to breaking whenever they add new stuff on the IaaS
ABOUT FUCKING TIME -
When I got changed between 3 projects in one month. Everytime I thought I got it figured out... NOPE. New project, new stuff to learn, comprehend and implement.
Very shitty period.1 -
Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?
Never thought about it until now..3 -

Company paid 1,500 usd per laptop (dell somethings) for them to just be azure access clients
We can't use outlook or teams. Or even IDEs on them to take advantage of the really good cpu and ram. We have to use the OTHER company device for that stuff
Ohhh and all our azure stuff is getting mac restricted so only the new laptops can access so basically forced to jump back and forth all damn day
Sometimes I feel companies enjoy wasting money3 -
Working with Electron is a nightmare...
"Hey you have a working app? Nice, here is the new Electron version which breaks everything! Now find out how stuff works now, because we won't tell you! Good luck"7 -
My biggest insecurity is that I missed out on new technology. I've been stuck on my last job working and maintaining a Magento store and doing only boring stuff, fixing bugs in php, etc. I it's been like that for 3 years but before 6 months I've switched jobs and now I'm learning new stuff, feals good :D1
-
Throughout the years I slowly bought more Arduino boards and stuff. But then RadioShack closed shops in my country. So my inventory has remained relatively small.
But now I have been given a ton of stuff. Boards, sensors, wires. More than what I know what to do with.
Someone, please give me a cool project to make.8 -
hello guys u guyz look awesome
I am new here also I am new for all this stuff as I recently completed my 12th
I love coding and I want to make my career in this field.
I hope u guyz would help :)5 -
Ran an app release yesterday, adding some new stuff and fixing a few bugs. Was scared this morning because APM didn't have any errors and the app was already in use by half of the userbase.
Turns out it's the most stable release so far! Day's all good again :D -
Udemy is having a sale. Offering lots of courses for 10$ only. Thought it'd be okay to share with fellow developers eager to learn new stuff.7
-
Can you recommend me any 13 inch notebooks. I want to buy a notebook to use as my main workstation.
I mostly do web / Android development but also looking to get more into ML so a good graphics card would be good. I will put linux on it but I am not sure about the distro yet.4 -
It has been a while since my last tale. I think it was about me starting a bootcamp...
Well, a lot of things happen since that:
• I did the bootcamp: three months of code-sleep-code, but now I know a bunch of new stuff.
• I gained my passion/love for develop again.
• Made new friends.
• IDK how became the CTO of a startup (which failed, shame, but I did learn a lot of new stuff again. Plus it wont failed because of the tech side (damn business not doing his business part...)) for about 6 months.
• And next week I will start at a new job (yaaay, income again!): they give me a nice 2k laptop, work from home if I want, nice salary...
So, I think I am ok.
PD: Sry if something I write is wrong, english is not my native language. -
I've been programming for 5 years now and every single day I find stuff I have to learn like trending frameworks or git stuff. Otherwise I'm considered nothing.
-
> Developer in a company that builds Enterprise Applications with web client and stuff.
> Had an really nice website a which colleague made with joomla as base.
> New CMO thinks it would be cool if he could change more details.
> Company now uses some cheap ugly website builder.
WTF is wrong with u O.o -
I'm picking old manuals and documents for recycling, enough to fill one handcart.
Just found a letter from old girlfriends and lovers, and a folder full of a closed form of soft non-gender hentai...
Why do I find homoerotic hentai art better then more normal hentai... I don't know, but I still do.
Well, I'm just gonna save a few... hehe
Btw, also found some paintings and drawings I forgot I've done, 15 years ago. :D2 -
Aha, more c++ knowledge. An implementation of a List (already provided by vector).
Lots of learning here, including use of the placement new operator, which is required for containers like this because if you just use the normal new operator, the buffer will construct a million items.
Also, the buffer is of type char*, not of type T, which really confused me in the beginning.
Lastly, with placement new, you need to call destructors yourself.
Interesting stuff.1 -
Back 2 school tomorrow (and a new one)... Hoping that computer class will be interesting and no shitty stuff6
-
Studying human languages.
They are so much more complex than a programming language and full of irregularities and stuff you can't really learn but have to 'feel'. This helped me a lot developing methods to learn new things quite easily and knowing foreign languages are kinda useful when I have to communicate with people too.3 -
when i'm new to this mac stuff and spend 20mins trying to install packages only to find they are actually pre-installed...
-
Here's my new function:
/**
* Output Debugging information and Die
*
* @return hopefully
*/
public function odd()
{
//stuff here
}
Hopefully, you don't have to ODD too much when you write code... like I have to do right now
fuck sakes1 -
I was searching for an optimized daily timetable which includes programming , learning new stuff , etc.
It would be great if you share your daily routine with me so I can maximize my performance.
Thanks 👍10 -
When the graphic designer adds new areas (divs, icons, sliders) to your website mockup without consulting you.. You ask why he added them.. His response... Just drag and drop the new stuff in.. I think he think I make websites in Microsoft Word.1
-
My computer just take fire. Hmm i think he dislike the new installation of windows :/
Well, be happy to have some other stuff for work !1 -
So I created my first Babel plugin today.
I think I'm hooked. This stuff is really cool, kind of opens a whole new world for you ☺️6 -
The only way for me to learn a new language/framework is by building stuff with it, or heck writing shitty blog posts.
So here's one on Elixir

Got a new job, joining next week, feeling scared and wondering how my co-workers will be, and if I will be abke to do assigned work properly ! I know the stuff but still..3
-
21 hours before the big release:
"Oh, hey, we just got 'round to taking a look at the new version and we've got a whole list of stuff we need to change."4 -
Haven't been on here for quite a while.. mostly worked as a graphic designer from home the past year. End of 2021, I'll transfer to the RnD department at my job to become a developer and help out with the front end part (because you know.. I do design stuff). Ok No probs, I have done some basic stuff, jQuery and (god forbid) wordpress stuff, should work out. New boss tells me to learn VUE so that I become a Vue frontend developer aaaand.. I'm shitting my pants with imposter syndrom dribbled all over things.. sigh.. luckily it's the weekend so I can take a beer and think about my future. 🍻1
-
FUCK UPS. Fucking dickheads killed our XML api a month ahead of schedule, and now I'm having to quickly implement stuff for their new api, and their docs are fucking dogshit. Seriously, the united parcel service can burn to death in a god damn fire.1
-
I don't understand how can Wikileaks be still active and publishing new stuff... Shouldn't it be like "pwned" by CIA or NSA or something? Can I trust whatever I see on that website?10
-
Did everyone else's Discord just freak out and make it seem like there was new stuff in all of the channels on all of the servers?1
-
Joined a new workplace. Lead wants me to research on the available list of certain frameworks.
But they have already built a couple of services using certain frameworks and they don't seem to be having any issues with them.
I asked why look for new ones when you already have stuff that work for you and they're like "It's working - is not a reason to not look for new ones".
I mean WTF? Isn't "Don't try to fix things that are not broken" literally the point?4 -
everytime i get a new, slightly better hardware i think to myself "how was i living until now, and how could i ever go back", which means I'm spending more money on stuff as time progresses. I'm not complaining tho, the audio in this phone is ridiculous
-
Gonna teach someone conpletely new to programming some C#. What are some good exercises I can give them to understand general programming well?
So far I'm thinking FizzBuzz, some progressively more complex math+logic stuff and maybe fibonacci using recursion.11 -
Goin on vacation tomorrow night... As expected to have two more days.
Started packing everything for my new addiction...
I usually take two cases, with everything I want, even a laptop. So space is already filled except my stuff and clothes.
Already have 3 cases... only with electronics stuff :D1 -
So a rant ago I was actually ranting because I couldn't think of how to do anything and such. Fair reminder I'm still kinda new so I decided to program small stuff to build me up so I can learn. AND I JUST MADE A PASSWORD GENERATOR ON MY FIRST TRY!!5
-
Lots of stuff for my new rig is being delivered today. Sadly mobo+case won’t be here until Monday 😭😭😭2
-
You got it all wrong, it's being a dev that helped me a lot in a lot of domains: organization, logic, basic maths that I kept struggling with for years, and the love to learn new stuff everyday
-
Anyone else experience "coder's block"?
No, this is not burn out. I've been learning alot of cool new stuff lately...but no clue what to start doing with it.1 -
What language would be most suitable for little graphical apps?
Like fractals, animations, and random visual stuff.
I like to learn new languages, but I never know which ones to turn myself to...
My requirements (all optional):
0- Can output visual stuff
1- Cross-platform
2- Documented
3- Not python
Thanks in advance :)11 -
Hey devrant, what do y'all listen to when you're working? What gets you in the zone?
Personally, I listen to a lot of chiptunes, some Opeth, Black metal, 70's, and lately, a lot of Mega Drive. Awesome stuff, but it's admittedly a weird mix. Always looking to find new stuff to listen to.16 -
so now that ai and all that machine learning can differentiate between images n stuff, what could be the new captcha‽ 🤔5
-
What book/video/resource do you know that explains complex stuff in a simple and fun way?
I recently found "Carfting Interpreters" by Bob Nystrom. It explains how to create a new scripting langauge from scratch, It teaches you a lot about interpreters and compilers and virtual machines. And it's free!
http://craftinginterpreters.com//1 -
I'd love to get some feedback on my new insta page: http://instagram.com/dailycsscode
I will post some css tips especially for beginners but there will also be useful stuff for adavanced people7 -
Well I have moved all of my iPhobe stuff to my new Google Pixel 2. Time to see what happens now...3
-
At my new job, we use WordPress. So obviously there's shitload of stuff to rant about. But because of those shitload WordPress stuff, I don't have the time to rant about it, and after work , don't wanna think about it.1
-
Normal Developers: We will learn some new stuff by joining Devrant.
Me: Let's complete the task asap and grab the cool swags1 -
Expected university to teach me. Find out my expectations were wrong. But I learned how to learn stuff. Now I work on thing that I want and when I stuck, I learn new stuff to overcome. Still don't know much but tryin'1
-
3d Prints.
So... At this time we think that everything is already invented...
And I keep making new stuff...
New Idea, mini vacuum cleaner... only found one design online and was so badly done... So I made mine.
Happens all the time... Search, nothing I like, do it myself. And worst, I'm not even good at CAD programs lol.
Any Ideas for tools to make?4 -
I see bad data and thought to myself, "I'll be able to fix this with a simple regex." A month later, I'm still finding new data patterns. Never give users the ability to store all of their data in a huge textarea box where they can make stuff up.2
-
There is a job fair coming up next week and while i dont really want to find a new job, i thought this would be a good excuse to update my cv a bit.
My question is, do you have any templates/frameworks/anything you usually use for stuff like this? I always throw together some bootstrap page but i want to learn something new.1 -
Working on a project in which the work is planned around what I'm already good at, isn't much use.
Yes, the person who is paying for the project, would want only someone with experience (good experience) to work on the project.
But really I'd like to work on stuff which will be challenging (in terms of learning new stuff). So yes, I'd like to get paid for learning! -
Who is doing this to me *sobs*, mongoose or MongoDB? 😥😥
I'm adding new records (array) to an embedded document, but the first record to be added gets duplicated, even with the same ID and stuff :(..
Was using Callbacks, switched to promises, still the same.
😥😥😥😥😥4 -
In my new job the main task of the team is to refactor 16 old java apps, when I was about to shot myself they told me I was going to another department.
Still have to deal with some old ass stuff(cobol and a few old Java apps) but it’s mainly new projects.
I guess there’s still a god above us.4 -
So far, devRant has severely damaged the 'I need to pay someone to rant too about my work' industry and caused a boom in the 'these guys have an awesome set up; I want a new monitor' industry. Social media guys! Powerful stuff1
-
When depression is hovering your back, it sucks when a potentially project breaking API update from a third party appears with shiny new features and your team glamour that we should implement it soon, but internally you scream that will break so much stuff and clients will be mad at you
-
developer/programmer AND new friend
-what do u do ?
--- i m programming application for android and ios and some stuff with php for client ...
- hm ok can i ask you something for my pc
--- hm ok of course

So, I took the plunge into a new dostro base, and now I have Manjaro installed on both of my daily drivers. One question I have... What are the advantages/disadvantages of different term shells? It offers bash, zsh, and fish. I'm used to bash, but I once chose zsh by accident and it looked interesting.
Also, general new Linux distro advice? No apt ; _ ; it's hard to install stuff now xD2 -
I got the responsibility for a project using Google App Engine the first time.
It is exciting to use the whole work day learning new stuff and read the documentation of a service you never worked with :] -
Went to visit a friend at a junkyard I worked for 6 months and brought some stuff I found there...
I new there was a DC motor on this piece... And what a goodie. To bad I only brought 3 hehehe1 -

The new twitter developer stuff is SHIT.
I need to apply now for my small app I use wanted to build this evening as an automation site project. Can't you cunts just give me access to this api so I can finish my projects.
How the fuck should I describe in 300 characters THAT I WILL BE TWEETING ONE TWEET PER WEEK NOTIFYING ABOUT A NEW EPISODE.
Now I need to fill 80 more characters with some dumb stuff just to be able to apply.....5 -
How so you guys motivate yourself when starting a side project/learning new language/technology? I am having some problems sitting down and working on my own stuff :(4
-
Just learnt some new stuff today and I apologize to whoever is maintaining my spaghetti code.Just overhaul it buddy.
If it work don't touch it practice 🤠 -
Finish education, get job
Finish my react page

Move all server stuff to linux
Move from jbod to raid 5

Youtube: Here's a new dark mode! Oh and it's not complete so we're reverting to GLARING white and old UI when you upload stuff.

Finally gifting my sister, on the occasion of my sisters recently born baby's 21st day..,
My old laptop with Linux installed and with an update to Samsung evo 860 ssd.
She is new to linux, not so new. Hope she will find good stuff to prepare for the next job as she is on maternity leave.1 -
Always learning new technologies, solutions, and stuff, never afraid to leave my comfort zone, and learning from my or others' mistakes.
-
When learning something new, say a new language or framework, do you go through the docs or tutorials, or do you just learn by doing and figure it out as you go?
I like to learn by doing and getting a finished project and start modding and changing stuff. what do you guys do?17 -
Does someone else have that too?
Sometimes at night when I'm creating something new (or adding to something) and I get into that zone when stuff suddenly works better than expected or when the thing I'm making is just awesome, I feel a need to turn on "evil" music, such as music with deep voiced male choirs, the soundtrack of Portal 2, some classic music like those evol geniuses in movies or comparable.
It just makes me feel like I'm gonna destroy the planet once my evil creation is done. -
I posted a photo of my setup a while ago, for week 119 ( https://devrant.com/rants/1675608/... ). I have now upgraded my keyboard, mouse and screen and thought I'd share a photo of it. Have a fantastic weekend. I know I will!1
-
Prigression is stopped at the current job. I work with PHP, java and other related languages aaand jquery. I feel like I should start learning vue/angular and rewrite the 2000line jquery mess i have now for one of the projects.
Working as a freelancer after work - how do you guys find time to learn new languages/libraries and have a life at the same time?2 -
!rant. Doing some great new stuff at work to make our dev team's live easier. Finding out how to use Docker for our automated test setup, that's killing 2 birds with 1 stone.4
-
If you don't have enough curiosity to read and know more about technology and how to implement new stuff then i have very bad news for you
-
what's your thoughts about the new windows terminal thingy. Always ran Ubuntu on top of windows in a virtual machine cause college and stuff. but what do you guys think?17
-
So a hackathon is offering its winner a nice amount in neo-coins . Is it worth going? I don't know much about bitcoins and cryptocurrencies except that they are pretty hot stuff in finance market. And this seems to be some new name in virtual money2
-
Just because you are new from university and don't understand the stuff this oh so very important senior developer does, does not mean he is doing a good job.
Latest when he leaves the company and you stay behind maintaining and extending the project you will notice...3 -
Working in IT all day at work (not coding), yet I am excited to come back home to code and learn new stuff I don't do at work... Difficult to resist, too much cool stuff out there every day!!!3
-
Just started my first small laravel project (a chat app). current state: i can chat with myself -awesome! Almost forgot about this good feeling learning great new stuff :)1
-
First XLR microphone setup, €265..
Sending my USB mic back.
I really hope im satisfied with the new stuff when it arrives. -
News Feed for web dev trends/news?
I don't want these "how to do some weird shit with divi" kinda-news, I want to learn about new trends, frameworks, stacks, tech n stuff, especially new js features. Mainly webdev but other dev-stuff, too.
And if someone has a better reader than feedly for such feeds, pls let me know.3 -
In the middleschool we have teacher who wasn't very skilled. We were learning about copying files, creating folders, writing in word...
So me and my frend were bored and do other stuff, talk loud and joking.
Teacher than got angry at us and want to punish as. So he made us show, how to creat new folder in explorer. Thinking we would know.
Me and my frend did it in sec. He just stood there in silence and didn't know what to do. We continue to do other stuff. -
Tmw you realize your new shiny laptop has issues with linux.
Gonna have to do some grub stuff, the shipped kernel doesn't support my skylake gfx :/6 -
That feel when you're saving for a laptop and trying to work on a project for a client but your laptop is quite old (3 years and 5 months in my case) and decides to go crazy when for months ago, the same stuff open wouldn't lead to a variety of freezes.
I mean, there's new specs and stuff but spending in the £1-2 grand on a new one (at least one more up-to-date and with better specs) isn't going to happen anytime soon especially with the new job coming soon.
At least, I can do some of the stuff on my phone 😅. -
... I'll be honest.
I think something in my mind is fucked.
I can not work repetitive tasks.
I can't. I can't. I fucking can't.
My primary task should be to program stuff. Not configure bullshit for a living.
I just want something challenging, something new, something interesting.
BOOOORRRREEEEDOOOMMM5 -
Okay, so we've learned nothing new.
A degree is a useless waste of time and nobody cares about it.
Said by someone who's currently in school, and will learn the basics of the stuff I'm currently doing day to day in about roughly three years.2 -
I recently tried to prototype a few pages for a new webapp I'm working on and--because I'm a masochist--decided to try something other than Bootstrap. It seems that no one can support backward compatibility and even Foundation's examples don't work with their current version.
Folks, add new stuff all you want, but don't break what works. If you do, at least update your damn example code! -
Da fuck is doing AWS redesigning the UI to a new style? It is even worse, what the hell is this new crap? They have a lot of unresolved stuff with their services but yeah... Let's do a new UI, as if the ones working with AWS would care about a "cute UI". Don't change the shit that it's working and we already know.3
-
In the past 3 months I worked on a new frontend project at work using "new things" like vue.js and webpack including Babel polyfills on production for the first time. Now the project is almost done an I've been sent on to other tasks on our older projects to help follow the deadline at these projects.
It is a hard cut to switch my head back to the old legacy code after this long time only working with the new stuff and technologies. I feel much less productive at the moment, because I know how much time I could safe if I just could use the new technologies. But there is now way around this. Finally I now have to maintain Symfony 1.2 and jQuery again instead of building new awesome stuff in this exiting new technologies.1 -
I'll be challenging myself as I'm new to linux stuff next awesome thing I find is vim.
I'll be using it as my editor.
Damn I really like being on linux windows was just boring shit1 -
sooo, new job. more complex stuff to do. i thought. turns out some project have memory probs. guess what, it's sharepoint! *sigh*... very hard to find the code in trouble.
learn sharepoint and it WILL come back to haunt you!2 -
Why are devs at google making it hard for android developers? They release libraries so frequently and completely overhaul everything. It was fine till a limit. Now again they are releasing jetpack compose which is a completely new thing. I don't have problem learning new things but the rate at which they release new stuff is far swift than other frameworks. For example they release a new dependency injection hilt while recruiters still look for dagger 2. Android is just getting overwhelming. What are your thoughts?4
-
I’d either advise a small break where you just focus on other hobbies for a few and let yourself relax,
or I would say learn something new like a new programming language, or a new area of programming (like game development or web development) and just try to make your own projects and stuff that you find fun or new,
or maybe focus on something different in tech, like try IT, Networking, Security, etc.
I suppose it would depend on the person/circumstance.2 -
Thinking of logging into work to do a side project and learn some new tech.... bc I don't have time to work on it during the week...
And there's no personal use case to do this stuff...2 -
Starting my first tech internship as an IT intern at my dads work. I’m super excited even though I know nothing about IT lol. I’m excited to learn and be exposed to some new stuff tho2
-
I am looking for a better job, to do that I expand my knowledge by learning new stuff after work. I do this to have a better live, but my relatives pulling me down...
My wife complains that I am always at work, even if I tell her I do programming as a hobby and I learn new stuff to get a better paying job.
In contrary my parents always say that I am lazy bum, because If man doesn't work with his muscles, they don't consider this as a real job.2 -
Hello fellow ranters!
So I just switched companies ( free from hell...rants if wanted) and now I'm facing a ton of new things I never worked with. Honestly I'm a little bit scared and thus I want to prepare a bit for the new stuff ahead of me. ( I'm a junior developer with only 4 years professional experience )
What are good resources to get some knowledge in the following topics, so I wont look stupid on my first day at the new company?
Docker
Microservice
DevOps ( CI/CD, Kubernetes )
I know some basic stuff to describe what these words mean but no work experience at all for these. My old work was purely monolithic Java EE 😅
Resources should be in English or German.
Thanks for every help!! 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️6 -
Do marketing teams are really so retarded to believe that if you spam your new customer's mailbox twice a day with "we missed you", "take a look at our new products" etc etc email/newsletter bullshit it will actually entice them to buy more stuff? Bro, it just makes everyone dislike you, makes you look desperate and it's just straight-up annoying. Unsubscribe and no longer bothered to buy anything from you.2
-
Installed a new ionic plugin and no matter what I did it seemed unresponsive.
The plugin has a breakpoint in it ...
Fun stuff1 -
Took few weeks break from coding, social media and stuff like that. And holy cow things have changed. Over 9k new rants here, bunch of new js frameworks, Instagram got some security issues..
I'm just amazed.7 -
Main reason is not being maleable, rejecting new stuff as the field changes constantly. The rest can more or less be tolerated (what can be tolerated for any other job, that is).3
-
The integration of technologies project I have this year. Not yet finished but I already learned a lot of very cool stuff.
First, I learned a new programming language + framework (Ruby on Rails)
Second, for the first time, I implemented a continuous deployment pipeline with Capistrano and Travis ci.
Third, first time I programmed a Restful API.
And more cool stuff coming up ! :D
I freaking love learning ! -
Must have software on Linux (Antergos + KDE)? Looking forward for new stuff that's worth checking out.8
-
It's been 2 years since I got a result for an issue while googling. Whenever I post something on SO I get 0 responses because no one knows :(
Highly optimized code, compiler errors and working with "new stuff" ftl :(2 -
It's ok to deal with PHP.
It's (kinda of) ok to make new stuff with It.
Stop pretending that it's not broken.
(I know php8 blah blah, but let's face it, without a good framework it's unmanteinable)
I dunno, i'm just frustrated by the low salary that PHP give to me.17 -
MFW I'm looking at my own code for generating images with packer & vagrant last updated two years ago and so much new stuff has come along...rant packer hcl2 feel like starting all over again stay in the game or die from brain aneurysms vagrant
-
The code I'm working in always has problems with stuff like "Object obj=new Object();" or "List stuff=new List;" without type specification, but now I found the summit: "private void methodName(Type parameter) *throws Exception*"
-
Can't believe I'm about to say this, but:
Systemd-container is a rather cool SysD extension.
It allows me (Root on most servers) to switch to a customer account in a completely new session, setting all the .profile and .bashrc stuff up, so I can do stuff like control their rootless docker, and no longer have to add my SSH key to their authorized_keys file then re-login under their user.
Nice.1 -
Hey guys...
Looking for a Framework or language that has:
- multi-platform (Windows + Android minimum)
- Easy to design GUI
- Native
- Can use file databases like SQLite
- Can use serial, BT, Wi-Fi to send-receive data.
I already used Python + Kivy but I think there must be easier frameworks for this...21 -
I want to be more tech savvy. I love programming, am fluent in Java and have no problem in pickung up new languages from time to time. But I’m really not a tech person. I always feel like I lose my grip on things when it comes to servers, web stuff and databases.2
-
to lazy to open atom, open git, to commit and push to add/test some features on my website, just used the chrome console to add and test new stuff 🤷♂️
-
According to Lunduke, Google code has now 25% AI generated (only new part I assume) code and is doing layoffs because of that and prevents raises. We wouldnt be replaced by AI but if we work so fast with it, some still are if there's not enough work left anymore. But I also think that Google is the type of company where most people are doing unimportant stuff anyway. What sick stuff they must have with so many developers. There's not daily a new product or so30
-
I am real tired of learning new stuff every day to keep up with technology I just wish someone invent some sort of pill, so when angular js, 3.0 released or vuejs or python or ruby or any new discovery , we just go buy a pill drink it and get smart, sorry if I offended you that how dum i am and that's how I feel lmao3
-
Hi devs! I am about to make some app for Fedora, but I'm kinda newbie. I know basics, but i wanna learn new stuff. Okay, straigth to the point: What would you recommend me to make and in what language?6
-
Even though my first rant was a rant ranting about rants this is definitely my favorite devForum so far. I'm new to this stuff so I've been checking out a few of them.
Plus I'm learning new stuff. Every time I don't get a joke I head over to Stack Overflow till I do. Probably not the best use of time but it helps to take a break every now and then. -
So people are getting new jobs left and right, and there are several others looking for new jobs including me...
Well... now the CIO is following people around the office and watching them walk to their car and stuff. To me this just makes the situation worse.
If he's so worries about people leaving then why doesn't he hire people instead of trying drive everyone out? -
tl;dr Which new laptop + Linux distro combo should I get when seeking for minimal configuration and maintenance hassle?
Hey devRant gang!
I'm looking for a new laptop: which one is supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu based Linux distros like Elementary OS?
Why Elementary OS you ask? Well, I want to move away from macOS and/but keep the minimal (and pretty) design/interface!
But: I don't want to waste time configuring stuff after install or a kernel update. I don't have time for that: I need to get shit done.
As much as I dislike closed source/evil corporate stuff the fact of the matter is that my MacBook Pro Just Works (and lets me get shit done).3 -
I decided to start learning Rust, mainly to work with REST API's, any recommendations? Or do I look out for another language?14

PM: Can we setup this new server today ?
Me: Sure, where is the ESXi setup CD ?
PM: ehh, wasn't in the box ?
Me: nah
So Finance team can't ctrl+c, ctrl+v from what we send them and actually buy stuff we need :D1 -
Working with external teams on this new project involving pretty sensitive stuff like bank transactions.
Talking about user flow and how to handle authentication, like 2-factor and stuff.
Newish guy on external team (though experienced) says they have a proposal.
Security Questions.
... like "What was you first car" security questions...
awkward silence in room...8 -
Time flexibility, free food, remote job, a great place to learn new stuff and a great environment to work with no shitty developers.
-
Anyone with experience with system 76? Need a new laptop soon and I am intrigued with their stuff. Used Linux for some time so not worried that, more about build quality etc.11
-
Heading to NDC Minnesota for the week. Hopefully going to get a chance to learn some cool new stuff! If anything it will be a break from work and kids, and maybe some time to actually code!

I used to run linux with photoshop and illustrator on wine but I recently switched back to windows so I can run the adobe stuff natively and im using the new linux subsystem and honestly , it works pretty darn well.3 -
I have been learning android dev in android studio for the past 20 days from the book "Head First Android Development" and as I am starting new chapters, there are always new methods, inner classes... of new widgets getting introduced to me and it's getting hard to memorize all these stuff!
Can someone give me some advice? In serious need of help.
Do all the professional android developers keep a guide with them while they are developing apps?5 -
after moving back to my home country, buying an apartment and after my career started to head to nowhere because there is nothing to code for me in work, just manager stuff, I am returning to coding after work to get back into shape, practice more, learn new stuff (and the old stuff)
wanted to create a small webapp with laravel/vue, holy fucking shit how hard it is (for me) to setup your env
install composer -> command php not found
o.O im pretty sure i had php on this machine HOW THE FUCK WOULD I HAVE ALL THESE PROJECTS HERE THEN
install php8.1 -> no such package
-.-
upgraded to ubuntu 22.04, install php8.1, composer
create new laravel project -> 3 errors, missing laravel/pint, phpunit
* visible confusion * i told you to create a project, if you need it, why didn't you... oh, wait
composer install -> same
well, * looks left, looks right * --ignore-platform-reqs
but still getting the chills from a new project, now I go sleep and tomorrow I start my journey to get back to business, wish me luck -
I try to find new stuff which is related to what I already know or is close. I like learning new technologies and techniques 😄. By this I continuously gain more knowledge thereby making me a better developer.
-
deadlines and digitalocean can suck my kiss. if deadlines are made by not talking to developer and digitalocean with its ssh stuff. figuring that out for 2-3 hours with new keys resetting passwords online console. then switched to freaking heroku, was up in 5 minutes
-
Building up me getting off my break of programming by doing a few small exercises each day testing new small front end stuff (since that's what I'm learning rn)
-
This moment when you have to read a 3k lines long Service class to plug a new process on the legacy one, and wonder if it wouldn't be just better to rewrite stuff in parallel instead of reusing and bending the old one
Everything is so tightly coupled that I would have to refacto all this and extract methods but I don't have time for that, and the chance of breaking stuff is insanely high -
I want to ask if your project manager assigns a task and ask how much time it will take to complete it which is particularly a new stuff, how you guys give a tentative date. It's freaking impossible for me to tell.3
-
0. A way to learn new stuff similar to what's on the matrix.
1. An AI assistant with advanced logic like J.A.R.V.I.S
2: For Linux to outgrow stupid Windows and Mac xD -
Getting a pretty big project for a new feature on the main site, and getting called to change stuff on the existing features every day....
-
Hey guys, I'm new to coding and DevRant. I was looking for some ground to learn some cool stuff but don't know were to start. What are some good languages to start? I know Python and VBA for now. What are some good sites for learning??4
-
So I was moved into a smaller Cubicle until my new one was built. There was some brown stuff on the side, and my third monitor won't fit.
But at least I found a working keyboard.2 -

I'm looking for a project idea in cyber-security...

I'm good with x86 assembly, c, c++, python and shell scripting.
I'm very well versed with Linux operating systems and basic networking stuff.
I'm willing to learn new concepts11 -
Has somebody some good ideas for a new Raspberry Pi Project?
Or something whats really useful?
(Something without buying stuff just with the rpi)9 -
Pretty new in my company.
Every time i ask something like vcs or other stuff they just tell me do it this or that way, because it's 'grown historically'... I can't hear that anymore... They just don't give advice and show me how to do stuff but not explain... And always say the two words... I can't hear them anymore... -
Turning to Devrant to search for researchers because THEY ARE NOWVERE TO BE FOUND!
Like i think research is cool, researchers create the stuff that developers will use later, but unlike them, there isn't any community or even indian tutorials.
As a new research student myself i'm both delighted and terrified.2 -
New to the the electronics stuff and I'm building a word clock. Recommendations for a microcontroller that has at least 22 outputs (22 words to light up). Something from Arduino? Also need to plug in for power and use an RTC.5
-
Instead of deprecating the class and adding a comment, why don't you just replace it with the new stuff? ffs, we estimated for replacing!
-
Since Google forced me to switch to the new Google News, I get only clickbaits and unrelevant stuff. Can anyone recommend me a news reader that lets me select sources and categories?1
-
knowing new technology in the trend, told the seniors, and have a discussion on that new stuff. Good way learn old and new technology at same time, cause they like to compared news with the old one.
-
When you ask a question on HN, hoping it will become one of those awesome resources for learning new stuff to use in your small pet project, and it only gets 2 votes and just sits there for the past 3 days...
-
So the flutter keynote was yesterday, amazing stuff were demoed and amazing stuff were announced, one of them was my speculations which I did in this rant:
https://devrant.com/rants/1883654/...
And that's the Flutter for Web! also known as Hummingbird, I think this is the new era of cross-platform developing! :D1 -
My workflow pet peeve is the length of time my PRs get merged into master
I have to create new features, but sometimes I have to work off current HEAD, which is technically old since I need stuff off a new branch.
Ideally we merge into master, then create a new branch off that. It's nothing major and there's loads of ways to get around it, but I'm used to the flow! -
Always keep pushing your boundaries.
Don't stay too long on anyone thing
i.e. Keep learning new stuff once you are confident about the old stuff.
Don't worry about the language, pick up one and get started. -
Did you ever use ZFS?
I want to build a linux-setup with some cool new stuff I didn't use so far and ZFS is among them.8 -
Do you guys listen to any programming podcasts which do not just center around one particular programming language? Any podcasts regarding topics like universal programming concepts, history of programming etc. At the moment I'm listening to Command Line Heroes (from RedHat) but I have almost listened to every episode and need new stuff :)
-
So I got sick of fixing my graduation project's repo, it had so many things that need to be removed, so I just created a new one and copied the stuff I needed.
-
hmmmmmmmmmm
Gonna have to be instrumental music, be it movie soundtracks(Star Wars <3) or whatever randy dandy music I have, like Sabaton.
Also my never ending promise to myself to finally install a new Linux distro on my main machine with KDE Plasma.. dat stuff gooooood -
Maybe I'm late to the game here, but I think the new "Reason for downvote" dialog is pretty wack. I downvote stuff I dislike or have seen before. I report stuff that's offensive...1
