The main reason we see collabs as a great first paid feature is because requiring payment or 2,000 points serves to be a slight barrier in posting a collab. Ever since I joined devRant, I've been the most motivated I've been in the past 3 years to work on my personal projects and learn new stuff

Last 3 months I mentored our new development trainee. Last night, he presented his thesis in front of other students, profs, and a jury. He received the highest score of all the projects we evaluated, and was even nominated for an award.

I feel like a proud dad. 😅

Finishing projects instead of starting new ones

Free time... sometimes I want to program, learn new stuff and work on personal projects, but sometimes I just want to be a couch potato and play hours and hours of video games...

How come starting a new project is always more appealing than finishing the infinite amount of unfinished projects :'(

Was working in small startup with great people on new projects, but for very low salary and shitty conditions.

Changed job to big company with nice salary and great conditions, but people are assholes and have to work on legacy stuff mostly.

Guess you can't have everything.

Me and my girlfriend just broke up.
I was sad at first but now I can really start focusing on some really interesting projects.

Such as my new secret website that I will release soon. I think you'll like it.

Dev related: To actually finish my projects instead of working on different ones, and end up finishing nothing.

I said I was going to create my own operating system. I started it, but barely. I haven't touched the compiler I was working on for months. Oh, and I'm working on an android app related to writing. I started it a while back, and never got to finish it.

My need to stop starting new projects, because if I keep doing this, I'll never finish anything.

Non dev related: To get my manuscript out of the slush pile, and finally published. It's currently in the dreadful querying process.

Wow. THE CEO JUST DID AN EMPATHIC SPEECH BECAUSE OUR PAYROLL GOT DELAYED.

He ran out of money. Begging for us to be pressured and bear his child that's even dead by now(his projects).

I guess someone said that it's already a sinking ship. I have to row my own boat and find a new course.

- Go to sleep early
- Get up at 5-6
- Drink quality coffee
- Work at your desk not from the bed or couch
- Don't start new projects until the last one is done
- Have a good and healthy diet

Universal law of side projects:

The motivation to invest more time in side projects is inversely proportional to the free time you have!

When you have a deadline, you want to work on 10 new things, as soon as you are completely you just want to a lazy sloth!

Me when I'm updating my projects:

I put some new code in and I tested it all out, I fixed some major bugs and I pushed the update out. That's what it's all about!"

I love learning new and exciting technologies, but I hate that it makes me want to rewrite half of my projects.

So I heard about this new Git ransomware that is demanding Bitcoin if not fulfilled removing commits and projects...

And then I thought to myself...

What will they get my deleting all my repos of projects that I told myself that I will finish one day.

I guess they will be doing me a favor. Doing something that I have been putting off for ages.

Boss set me up for a last minute certification to prepare for next years new projects. Went through a lot of material in just two days, then had to take the exam immediately after the last class ahead of everyone else. Aced it!^^

What surprised me the most though is how much I still enjoy learning new stuff (wasn't even tech), even after 8 yrs on the job..

The Moment when you signend a contract at a new cool company... Good money... Cool projects... nice ppl... And then you see it... 4 spaces instead of 1 tab, what to do? Go back to my old boss and beg for my old job? Just keep using 1 tab as i did in the last 20 years of my life? Commit suicide?

So much to do, so many side projects gathering dust, so many new things to learn.....tomorrow

a little confession: i've rarely used test suites in my projects (due to laziness and lack of time).

i've started a new project and now i HAD to write tests in order to make my PM happy.

Then i had to refactor a lot of code.

IT WAS SO EASY WITH TESTS.
I WAS A FOOL.
STUPID PAST ME, STUPID!

*Started a new job in january - no motivation to study in school.
*Girlfriend dumped me after 5.5 years (she met an awesome co-worker to hang with) - i had to move out with all my shit and find a new place to live.
*Losing friends who i made when i was with her.

*Had christmas and new years with her - shittiest of all years.

So... I'm pretty much dead inside.

But today I laughed in a meeting.

Nearly died of laughter.

We're currently understaffed for various reasons, especially the ongoing migrations etc.

So a lot of projects are currently in "maintenance" mode (e.g. no new features) - cause we lack the necessary man power.

The meeting was more or less:

Team: We had an ongoing discussion in the team regarding logging and possibilities of tracing and XY suggested we implement OpenTelemetry in *all* projects in the next weeks, can we do that?"

Sometimes I'm not sure If I'm in a sitcom for torture experts.

My current company decided to do all automation in node.js.
Crawling, new projects, processes, all of it in Node.

Fuck my life.

After a month of doing php projects a new python project comes in! Finally!

My boss keeps trying new tech with important new projects instead of trying the fucking new things with anything other than important shit.

I support this let's try better options approach but cmon, be rational about it.

Started at a new employer few days ago. It all started with:

So one of my friends has just had a child and it's already a month old...

Me: everything is ready except for this one old project
TL: we couldn't use it for one of our projects
PM: we had difficulties with the new tool
CTO: we couldn't add our partner's project to the pipeline
Director: *gives me a warning for being incompetent*

2019 goals:

Changing between projects multiple times a day is as annoying as a homeless chasing you while begging for heroin money.

Today was one of these days I had to fix bugs for 3 different projects with completely different devStacks. The productivity dropped to a new low. Being a fullstack dev is awesome, but please let me do one thing at a time, so I can stay focused!

4 weeks in this new job and I fucken hate it. Strict deadlines and non-interesting projects. Only thing is good is the pay. I will wait for next 4 weeks to decide if I want to fucken leave this company or stay.

There’s no better feeling then doing a full server rebuild, modifying several projects heavily to be portable and keep working under new infrastructure and loosing access to dependent systems.

Migrating everything across, firing up Apache.... and BAM the fucker just works and ssl labs gives it an A (it was a giant F with multiple vulnerabilities yesterday on the old server)

Was invited to work on a new startup which had 2 founders and 3 devs including me.
Within 2 years, founders started fighting related to equity and stuff. Those mfs Finally dissolved the company.

We 3 became jobless but continued as a team and with the contacts we got from previous startup we started working on projects outsourced by other companies.

I was the designer, and the other one a passionate android and ios dev, last one was a pro php, node.js dev. We were super productive and fast. Worked together alot until one of us got a really good job in a company.
We still work on some crazy projects, discuss random shit, help each other with their projects whenever we meet on weekends.

Yes!!! Only took one morning.... (changed the Downloader from WebClient to Selenium to get past the bot check, cant find old rant)

Me at every new project

I'm absolutely fed up with all documentation being tutorial-based these days! Well written documentation doesn't start with you creating a new project from scratch.

This is basically how all of Microsoft's documentation starts: Step 1 - Open Visual Studio. Step 2 - Create a new project...

I just checked out their WPF samples repository, and about 8 of the projects won't even compile. Absolutely ridiculous. There's 205 projects in the repository, and of course the one I need is on the list of those that won't compile.

Finishing all my open tasks so I can start new projects and get even more open tasks >_<

Today I realized that I lost it a long time ago...

That sucks hard, every little script I do on the side I feel excited , every functionality I develop on the job is a fucking mirror of some other shit that no one uses on another mirror project that brings nothing new to the table.

Coding is like the minds virus for me. I can't stop, but I sometimes question if it's good for me. Work is ok nowadays, but keeping a balance in hobbies is so hard. When I discover something new that's fun it can eat me up for days. But that excitement can leave just as quickly with very few projects ever finished as a result.

(or working on your own projects that actually have to get produced in the real world)

Axiom #37: It is always a lot more fun to start something new, then to finish the thing that *was* new and exciting when you last tried to finish a thing.

Starting new side projects is like getting myself into deep shit, voluntarily.

1. Plan your work
2. Plan new skills to learn every year
3. Stackoverflow is your best friend
4. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions...
5. ... but make sure not to ask too many of them
6. Don't get burned on one single topic, find other projects to work in parallel or even better work on side projects in your spare time

Always check the licence when you include a new library.

Very nearly GPLed a large amount of commercial code by not checking this in one of my first projects out of uni.

Luckily someone else noticed and the library in question turned out to be dual licensed so it turned out ok in the end.

Finally had a weekend to myself to work on some projects. I got my hands on a Sonoff switch. Did a manual flash of some new firmware and got it setup on my crappy old washer to do a little DIY smart home upgrade.

Always nice to get to do a personal project 😊 Just wish I had time to tinker more.

I like that he's doing AI research, but it's annoying that the day after he tweets something, everybody's telling me that Elon Musk already invented true AI.

These companies are basically just think tanks, so why not call them that?

I'm starting a new job in a month!

I'm simultaneously excited and anxious about it.

Excited because I get to work on some new cool projects, use new tech, get great pay and benefits, and it really seems like a great place for me.

Anxious because I am currently on sick leave with stress, because my current job wore me down. Not so much the tasks themselves, but the atmosphere and attitude of management. So I have to hope that I can manage to get enough rest in the coming month that I am well enough to perform well at my new job.

I am always excited when I see new JavaScript framework. Not in positive way, but still excited.

Why? Because I have so much to choose from. And I love half finished projects.

When I was new to GitHub, I used to think that the projects with “build : passing” were the only legit projects :p

How do you get new employees?

We have a lack of personnel in our company. We do not receive applications via job advertisements or advertising.

Our company is modern, has good project planning and employees receive company cars. Projects made in react, node, php, java and python.

So, how can we find new employees? Which way are you going?

What you could have:
- simple project structure
- common lib with modular logic
- import logic as needed in you services

What you do:
- waste months to write an opinionated framework that works only if used in a super specific way
- have a fat sample project as example
- use a code generator to copy and rename the said sample project whenever you create a new service
- have everything break whenever something new is added in the framework
- oh and keep the framework in active development while others work on the client services, so lots of things will break often and out of nowhere

Fucking god, i hate when people make pet projects out of work projects

Wake up in the morning and my girlfriend told me I have been mumbling about bugs all night. God, I need new projects, so tired of maintenance work

It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:

I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!

The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)

I hate when I it's night, I have ideas/want to work on my projects or study, but I'm way too tired..
I can't work, because I will only develop new bugs
I can't study, because I can't receive information anymore
And I can't fucking sleep either because I am constantly thinking about how much I WANT to do.

That I'm Not working on my personal projects after university or work and beeing to lazy to even start learning a new language.

I'm so fucking done today.

The VB project I ranted about earlier was apparently just the top of the iceberg of madness that is my workplace.
So the same ninjacoder who managed to code himself as a dependency in the VB project apparently had his greasy little fingers in a bunch of other projects around here.
A script for automating new workstation installs that went haywire last week had traces from this Omnipotent mastermind all over it. He got us this time with static urls and zero errorhandling.

Getting so done with undocumented projects that I have to dig through several hours just to find and fix.

When the CIO referred to our entire backend system as a "heritage" codebase in a press interview.

Cue every backend developer scrambling to change projects, every manager scrambling to reassure the backend developers, and HR scrambling to hire new backend developers.

I use /tmp for random stuff. So if i forget it, it gets deleted when I shut down my PC.
Its really effective against data cluttering.

But NEVER use /tmp for code testing or even new projects!

• Learn new things!
• Continue my programming projects (mostly C#), and eventually publish them!
• Create more programming side-projects!
• Create more music, of various genres, and finish unfinished tracks! (I love music 💙)
• Buy a violin, or another instrument! (I already play harpsichord and piano, and I love them both)
• Buy a new PC setup! (maybe?)
• Get a driver's license!
• Create more music sheets!
• Create more custom maps, on rhythm games! (like osu! or Cytus / Cytunity)
• Make new friends, and meet with my older ones more!
• Go to places, new and old!
• Open myself more to others! (I'm kinda shy)
• Do my university's exams, properly!
• Do my conservatory's exams, also properly!
• Try drawing!
• Try all sorts of new things!
• Get a cat into the family! (I love cats, but I never got one because I don't know how to raise them, yet)
• Be more confident about myself!

And... yeah, I guess that's it :D

I’ve been out of steady work for almost 2 whole months now but things are starting to look up...

I’m super stoked for some potential client projects!!! I have one client that wants me to completely rebuild their businesses infrastructure, PC refresh, server upgrade, network overhaul for 3 sites, and more. This new client has a business partner with another side business and wants to discuss potential work/projects. And I’m going to be discussing a potential contract deal on Thursday to develop a custom software for another client.

Guys, I had my first REAL developer interview today. Without jinxing myself, I'd like to say it went really good. We discussed the companys upcoming projects, what they expect from a new developer, etc. but some thing that bothers me about it is there was never any discussion about my expected compensation. I'm not sure if this is common or not, but we'll see.

Side projects teach you more than anything, I learnt all the new android technologies by working on my side projects

Was trying around new features in new version of a build tool. Tried setting output dir to parent folder (..). Turns out the tool first cleans everything in the output dir, lost all projects...

You can now group projects in Android Studio and even add icon to them.

Right Click on Project -> New Project Group
Right Click on the Project -> Move to Group

My boss has told me he now doesn’t think we can afford the new property management system we desperately need to do most of the projects this year.

He has now suggested that I build a new one for the company to use from scratch. Oh and in the same timeline as buying an off the shelf product.

I'm really terrible at managing personal projects. I'm often procrastinating (I guess you could say I put the 'pro' in that word) or lacking motivation. I rarely complete projects because I always start something new and forget about the other projects. I have had a Sublime Text window minimised and related browser tabs opened for a year now and haven't touched it in months. I'll get around to it some day.
Some of these projects could be making a few dollars (hopefully more) if I complete them.
Has anyone got any tips to help me stop procrastinating and motivate myself?

Recently, I have planned out my weekends to learn new stuffs.
And guess what, since I needed a project to start with, I have taken devrant related projects.
Example: Writing a python library as devrant api wrapper.
I have few other stuffs to learn too which I will begin once I finish this. That too most probably will also have some relationship with DevRant..

One of the projects started a year ago was to replace our tech/status dashboard. Two of our new people were even dedicated to developing it full time for 6 ~ 8 months. I found out today the entire board is gone, and it's been replaced to a link to Service Now.

Nearly a year of work, completely flushed down the tubes. Glad I wasn't on that project.

I've just started my new career with a job in IT operations and I love it. After my electrical engineering degree I fell into a job as a website manager for a small company, I self taught html and css and I knew from then that I had found a job that didn't feel like a job. I'm​ excited to learn everything I need to know to progress as far as I can go in this industry. In my first few weeks at this new job (where i have my own office!) I've self taught python to create automation scripts for live projects, currently up to my eyeballs trying to figure out how to change the VB code for an excel module.....Then there have been so many other projects and bugs and I love it! Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated!

The feeling, when you learn about a new feature of the language, you've used for over 6 months.
The joy of learning something new,cool and useful mixed the pain, of knowing, you could have written your previous projects easier.

Anyone else feel guilty at work when you're between projects or waiting for a request to be completed?

I usually teach myself something new in that time, but I feel guilty.

my boss this week: yeah no, the other releases are most important for our company. the new project needs to be subordinated and has lower prio, at least lower prio than critical and highly prioritized bugs.
me: so.... who decides which items from which projects i shall prioritize higher than the new project and how much time i shall spend on them?
my boss: it is your job to talk to people, give them estimates and tell them how many items you can work on, so they can decide which items they pick

so basically i'm having the feeling that i need to manage myself here. it will be fun to attend the new project daily standups and tell the new pm all the time that i couldn't do anything because i had no time. anyone else with this experience? is this normal? actually i liked our new pm's attitude "dealing with that is not your job". i should have known it was too good to be true ^^'

Angular 2+, it's just so elaborate, and over the top complicated. On larger projects it easily becomes a mess. I started a new job where I inherited a angular 2+ project, that is terribly made, it's so frustrating. I now use Vue.js 2, and it's just so beautiful, especially single file components :D

New task with a march deadline, our 1 developer (me) will work on multiple projects, while also learning about AR (I'm a WebDev) and creating a commercial ready AR app....

I think it's time to get back to looking for a new job...

First post...starting a new job today, and I will be working as a JavaScript developer (Node, angular). I only worked with Java before this job and my only JS experience is with little side projects. I am super excited to get start working with new technologies. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

I want to start a new website that I can use as a hub for all my side projects.

Will double as a portfolio site but mostly it will just let me share my ideas with friends.

So I taught git to my colleagues. They were happy to learn new things.

I asked them to commit things that they have done with proper message in every projects from now on. I find 50-80 commits to pull in every 10mins. Ughhh. They were committing every single changes they were making. 😂😂😂

Sometimes simple things can overwhelms some people

Personal projects, I think, are 50% of the battle, and projects you are required to complete are the other 50%.

Personal projects encourage you to try new and hard things without too much fear of failure.

Required projects make you learn something and complete it.

Both are absolutely essential to craft a well-rounded dev.

Everytime I find a new open repository, it is really humbling that there are so many projects with creative solution to problems.

After a week of getting new projects thrown at me, I finally get a block of time to start one of the larger, more complicated one.

30 minutes into planning it out, prepping the workspace and diverting 90% focus to said project, someone busts in with a more complicated top priority project that needs done by end of day.

In large projects, eclipse is so bad that rename of a class can last up to whole minute.
make that an new class, 0 references. still whole minute. How can you fuck up so badly???

Visited a friend at their new workplace. Awesome office, really cool interior, nice people, devs are working on cool projects. Started to feel pretty envious.

Then we felt a rumble. Well, it was more like a rrrrruummbbble. Turns out they are located right next to a train track and the whole building shakes a bit when a heavy freight train goes by.

No better way to start off a new year than to wake up to message from the boss telling you that you need to start to work even harder because there are projects overdue and clients has started charging penalties.
Of course he doesn't care that there are only two of us (me, a Junior Android Dev and he iOS Dev) and there are 3 projects, all with deadlines in December 2017 or January 2018.

Hello guys. A newbie to the app. I would like to ask - start a conversation with you about adopting new technologies, if should we follow or just wait? I am a PHP developer. I would set myself around mid to senior level. Since I graduated and I start working on a Marketing/Development Company, I have been develop a lot of websites, platforms with pure PHP, JavaScript, SQL. Later I start using framework like laravel. Now I am thinking about JS frameworks such as node, vue, react, angular and maybe later noSQL. The problem is that there are many new technologies that companies required when you apply. I want to learn new technologies but I don't know if that would be helpful than focus on LAMP and get better and better to that. Many orgs have implemented their own technologies and each company is getting mad to it. You see each company adapt these new technologies even if they don't want em or projects required it. So my question is: are we talking about dramatically speed and light use to server when we use new frameworks like these, previous mentione + etc? Or companies are just trying to look cool by mentioning many techologies while projects could never ask for em? (Nothing serious, I am just trying to make conversation and clear my thoughts by getting others opinion)

Finally.ubuntu on my new laptop with a crucial ssd(275gb) and 8gb ram all working perfectly after so much trouble.now I can get back to my Java projects and learning c++ and perl

I need ideas of projects to develop in my free time, I'm tired of the old technology and ugly projects from work, I want to develop something new, fun, to feel the excitement of coding again ;)

The field does not matter i'm willing to learn.

And , no , I can get another job, that is not an option because of the special benefits it's offering that I can not find in another company(very flexible schedule, I'm a student and need it).

Two months in my new job, no task assigned to me yet. Not even one. There's been a budget reallocation, and the team just got dissolved. Will probably be moved to a new team (or not?). Part of me enjoys the free time I'm getting (I get to work on my side projects) but it's kind of depressing that I can't prove to the company how much I love building things while at the same time helping the company. 😔

Suffering from our first service outage since I've been at my new job.

Guess when it happened? While we have TOO MANY projects going on.

When you have too many pots on the stove, you're bound to forget the smallest, most crucial detail.

I've been working at a consulting company (lone programmer) as a Web Dev for about 2 or 3 months and I'm now skeptical about quitting.

I have the liberty to use any technologies I want, unless we get something already using a certain stack. The atmosphere is great and I only work part-time. The problem is that they have me working like a hog on many different projects simotaneously and expect me to meet deadlines despite new projects coming in weekly. Again, I'm the only programmer here, nobody to help me out. I don't make a killing but the pay isn't too bad considering it's part-time.

I've also noticed that my programming activity has degraded since I started working. I feel like I'm slowly losing the motivation I once had to keep working on my personal side projects.

Any tips on what to do?

I am mostly self-taught. If I am (really) interested in doing something new, or if I feel there is a need of doing something, I just do it. Simple.
Learnt a great deal by looking at others' codes (like how things are done, conventions etc), tinkering with the IDE, working on personal projects etc.

In my new job the main task of the team is to refactor 16 old java apps, when I was about to shot myself they told me I was going to another department.

Still have to deal with some old ass stuff(cobol and a few old Java apps) but it’s mainly new projects.

I guess there’s still a god above us.

I got in a hackaton that I don't have the time for because I have 4 delayed projects...
Too late to get out as I'll fuck up my team, and I'm pretty late with the projects already.

I got in a month ago when I was relatively free, but now with each day new responsibilities arise and I feel like I'll never handle them.

About the projects, one is delayed because of broken communication with the client, one is huge and one is the silliest one I've seen in a while.

Some of the software companies haunt their former employees to maintain the projects they worked on before leaving them, even if these companies know they have a full-time new job.

So I discovered WAMP this weekend, it's so nice to not have to work on my prod server when making changes and testing out new projects :)

The Web 3 has coming and I really love that. The descentralized web is a new way for the devs. Some projects was started, like: Patchwork built on SSB protocol (Secure Scuttlebutt), Dat Project wich create the dat protocol for share files in P2P network. The company has been moving projects away from ASP .NET to MVC .NET. One of the cited reasons was improved performance. The ASP .NET projects were not the fastest applications available, but were manageable.

The new MVC .NET projects are slower than snails. Every single page element is trying to do an async call to populate metadata elements. There are sometimes 50 or more controls per page due to the industry this software is used in. FML.

do you experiment with new technology on your client projects (and do you bill (some of) the extra time?) or on your own time (meant for learning)?

For completely nonsensical projects I propose a new metric. Instead of counting how much code is covered with tests, I propose to count how many tests are actually testing the code. They really write more tests than code nowadays

We have a lot of small projects with different domains that we maintain and develop. Most go into maintainence mode now and get no new features. Now our new department lead declared us the SWAT team bc there are no new good projects. This baiscally means we get pushed to other team's projects that have issues with deadlines and support there. So basically we get to projects with fire on the roof and as reward for extinguishing, we get another burning project.

Either that or in the first department meeting where our new boss introduced himself and managed to say in the same paragraph that due to corona we "shouldn't expect any salary increases bc these are hard times" and "his department has so much money and doesn't know where to spend it"

I on the other hand just finished all my projects, guess I'll just sit back and wait.

Imagine you have 100+ projects in java, that became obsolete due to Oracle decision to "improve the language" .
To me, the required effort is not easy to the point that better to invest in migrating the projects to other languages such as Rust.

So I expect to hear for example : "Lets see why we should continue using java"
Instead, you hear : " Oh the new version of java has nice features, lets continue using it".

Then I understood why :

If you start a new language, you are a beginner so if you were a master in Java, then you will not accept to be a beginner in Rust, just like anyone who discovers the language.

Mark Russinovich, the chief technology officer of Microsoft Azure, says developers should avoid using C or C++ programming languages in new projects and instead use Rust because of security and reliability concerns.

Related to previous rant where I was asked to deliver the new UI for an Angular project running in production.

So the good NEWS is that I have successfully missed the deadline. Thanks to my project manager who keeps asking me to implement new features on other projects.
