Client: we want our logo in our new website
Me: ok no problem just give me the....
Client: but we dont want ppl to be able to download it.
Me: excuse me but that is not posible cuz...
Client: where is your faith! Nothing is imposible.
Me: proceed to stare in disbelief....26
Client tests the app and provides feedback ... This sucks! Full of bugs, hard to navigate, nothing works!
1 week later after version 2 client provides new feedback: This rocks! Love it. Easy to use and rock solid!
Changes made: background set to light blue.10
Just watched a video where someone (in relation to the new mass surveillance law in the netherlands) asked people on the street if they had something to hide.
Everyone said no.
"Could you get your phone and show me around?"
Everyone said yes.
"May I take a look at your messages/pictures/browsing history?"
Suddenly 80 percent said no.
"But you said you had nothing to hide!"
"I'm going to take that back."45
Someone at Google: how do we make Android build times quicker?
Someone else at Google: we could make a new button next to Run and call it 'Instant Run' and give it an awesome lighting bolt icon!
First someone: what will it do differently?
Second someone: nothing 😎14
Was watching 'Johnny English Strikes Again' when I discovered a secret message in the movie.
Guys, MI7 is hiring C programmers!11
One of my colleague took 3 week vacation leave. End of vacation time he requested for extending the leave. Company is not allowed him, so he send resignation email. After 1year we get to know in vacation time he already joined new company. I asked him why, he said "That three weeks is trials. If nothing workout he planned to going back to old company." 🤨4
*Working on app for client*
After review - “Can you make that font bigger?”
*Makes font larger*
After review a week later - “Can you make that font smaller?”
*Puts font back to original size*
Another review later on - “Can you make that font bigger?”
*Keeps font at same size and changes nothing*
Next review - “That new font size is perfect!”2
Last year I got an Acer notebook from a guy that stated that "it isn't working". "Okay" I thought, let's boot it up.
> Screen turns on, no splash screen, no hard drive activity
> Well fuck
> Tries to enter BIOS, nothing
> Openes case to reset CMOS
> Okay I think I need to flash a new BIOS
> Acer support site
> "Download the exe to flash the BIOS"
> Spend two hours researching
> Find out that you can flash via USB and by pressing a key combination
> Extract the BIOS binary from the exe file
> Flash it on the notebook
> Splash screen and working BIOS
> No bootable devices found
> Connects hdd with test bench
> Completely fucking dead
> Order a new hard drive
> 3 days later
> Install hdd
> Install Windows
> Finally working
WTF did you do to this notebook to not only mechanically break your hdd but also fuck up the BIOS completely??!!14
We moved to a new office floor and got a brand new set up. My new extension monitor died just after 4 hours of use, it was showing a black screen a with couple of colourful lines running down the screen.
Got the IT guy to come and replace it. He says he must test it with a display cable even though the screen was dead without any input source. (Ok fine cbf arguing with you, just do it.)
*Magicarp used splash, nothing happened*
Realising I was right, he gave the ok for another guy to replace my monitor.
Second guy comes to my desk and realised he forgot the electric screwdriver. (Sigh, how long must I wait...) After he finally finished installing the new monitor he plugged the display cable into a random display port without looking.
*Magicarp used splash, nothing happened*
Since the monitor wasn't displaying anything, he jumped into asking me to restart my computer. I gave him "the wtf are you stupid face" and just said "NO". I looked over to where he plugged the cable and asked why he plugged into the "dp out" port.
I plugged the cable to the correct port and monitor was working.
Felt like I can do their job better without any experience in IT support.
PS. Don't play the "please restart your computer" card on me. I also work in technology.2
New interview question: “You’re stuck on a deserted island with nothing but stones.. what’s the fastest way to escape?”2
My start in new company....
HR: you will get a Macbook from us...
One Day before first Day:
I Picked up the laptop from company...opened the case....
No Macbook, but HP 😂😂😂...🤷♀️
First Day at new company:
PM: you will be using Ps, Sketch....
ME: how will be the licence costs payed?
PM: it is already installed...
ME: wait, what? It's nothing in my Laptop.. Wait what? Sketch?....I haven't recieved a Mac....
Later in the same Day...
My laptop: Fu*k you!!! Your account has been disabled. Contact your system Administrátor...
ME: wtf????? 🤷♀️🤦♀️
.....to be continued....24
That moment when the development manager says "nothing is impossible"
And then starts to spend the whole day assigning the new tasks.1
Everything was going well, finally could put some money aside and I literally thought 'if nothing breaks down this month, I'll have a good month of savings :D'.
I should definitely not have fucking thought that.
Well, RIP phone. Let's search for a new one.
Last year our government voted out new mass surveillance law through like it was nothing AND with a huge amount of votes in favor and hardly any against. (remember that the government is *supposed* to represent the people of the country)
A few students made a referendum happen, 48 percent of our people came to vote for this.
The first exit poll results are about 50/50!
I'm happy as fuck, damn!
Sorry for this slightly political posts and if this entirely violates all terms, I'll remove it. I thought this fits, though, because of what this new law.15
My first ever programming lesson was pretty awkward. I had zero knowledge of any coding so even the basics were new. Everytime the teacher said "string" I was kinda cringing and feeling awkward, but nobody else seemed bothered. I was laughing inside like the teenager I was, looking around for someone to share a giggle with. But nothing.
The word "string" in dutch means thong. Me not knowing any other uses for this word was a little flustered 😬.5
I was a good programmer.
My teachers always impressed by work..
I was like coming up on my own solutions not from books. Never remembered any algo but still the one who solve mostly every problems
joined companies after college.
I thought I will learn so many new things..
Yes i learned but I'm feeling like I'm losing the spirit of problem solving
I'm just doing same thing, same logic, making similar kind of application with just little difference.
Nothing is like i'm making something new... All I'm doing is using predefined java and android method..
To create some predefined designs and working.
Fucking similar client requirements.
Seems like time to quit job and dedicate myself toward research
I know it's a boring rant... I'm just fucking
Hope hope = new Hope() ;15
What I did wrong during my home office cleaning session this morning:
- put soap on my mouse mat
- snapped my enter key
- vacuumed up my F8 key
- absent-mindedly cut my ethernet cable
- lost my zero key
- dropped my backup hard drive (data was recoverable, but I need a new drive)
- lost one of the nose pads on my glasses
- got a cocktail stick stuck in a USB port
- exploded my mouse by using the wrong type of battery
Things I did good:
Has anyone ever done this?
See no new posts
Sees nothing interesting
Okay... Need a tech break...14
Today was bad day.
- only had 3 hours of sleep
- 1.5h exam in the morning
- work in the afternoon until 8pm
- 1 drive crashed in a RAID5 array
- wasted hours of data copying
- my hands and arms got really dirty from all that nasty trump-face-colored dust in the server room
- nothing new in the west
- I have to get up in 4 hours again to start a new copying task
- I only knew it was friday today because the devRant meme game was reaching the weekly peak
- lists can save lives
- good night 😴2
6 am: 2yo woke up
8:30 am: start work (from home)
11 am: go get breakfast/lunch
11:30 am: work call. while driving. Learn nothing new.
12:00 noon: infuriatingly slow errand
12:30 pm: work call. Learn nothing new.
1 pm: finally get to eat. It's cold. And terrible.
6 pm: 2yo finally goes to sleep (missed nap)
9:20 pm: 2yo wakes up screaming.
9:30 pm: find 3 or 4 tablespoons of leftover tuna in the fridge. No bread.
10:45 pm: I finally finish my work (super-urgent friday-morning release of a next-Wednesday-morning deadline... Yeah idfk.)
11:29 pm: 2yo stops yelling and screaming and goes back to sleep
11:39 pm: finish writing this while in bed.
11:40 pm: Sleep?10
No amount of backend code is seen as progress by client.
Have a web store app project that is running and looking beautifully and is currently connected to nothing.
Got scolded this week for not having any new deliverables.
Spent 15 hours on security updates and database architecture.5
Fuck. My new job in the public sector requires me to sign paper applications to access JIRA or git. It takes them 4 days to process, so now I am waiting at home doing nothing. I’ll still get paid a competitive developer salary, though.
If you are a EU citizen from a country that subsidizes Poland, you can be sure that your taxes are well spent on my couch :)11
What’s the point in a fucking package tracking system when it hardly updates anything?!
Ordered my phone last Wednesday and got an update saying that it was going to be picked up by dhl soon.
Nothing new until today: it’ll be delivered Wednesday.
So you literally go from the first to last status in two updates, what’s the fucking point?
And it's not a good thing.
While we start to think that we get a hang of something, there is new thing coming out.
Result is nobody knowing anything well, nothing is developed properly.
Hardwares, languages, frameworks, methodologies. Everything is going too fast.
Or may be I'm just a slow sloth.14
I had an old rant somewhere about the most unproductive meeting I’ve had.
It was when I joined a new team. I was asked to hold a meeting to solve the issue of why nothing gets done on time and nobody showed up to the meeting on time including the manager.1
Hey @dfox and @trogus, was wondering, are there any plans for items higher than 20K upvotes? I'm at more than 120K now and I'd like a new item and also maybe something to work towards :)
Also, I'm just asking/wondering, I know what a busy life is. This is nothing more than a question, not demanding anything! (I'm deffo not in the position to demand anything)
Manager: We are now using libraries for everything. I estimate based on nothing that this will increase productivity x20.
*Project grinds to a halt while devs scramble to learn/implement new library*
General Manager: Where was the productivity increase?
Manager: Our devs are not willing to learn new things quickly4
Dev related: To actually finish my projects instead of working on different ones, and end up finishing nothing.
I said I was going to create my own operating system. I started it, but barely. I haven't touched the compiler I was working on for months. Oh, and I'm working on an android app related to writing. I started it a while back, and never got to finish it.
My need to stop starting new projects, because if I keep doing this, I'll never finish anything.
Non dev related: To get my manuscript out of the slush pile, and finally published. It's currently in the dreadful querying process.4
The reason why I changed my username ( I'll just be honest here )
I was working on a website. I noticed that entries were submitting yesterday but today new entries were not showing up on database. It was like my database refused to insert new rows but there was no new error in log. I kept trying for almost half an hour, read all the answers on stackoverflow, read docs, tried different methods. Nothing worked. I was fucked up. Completely fucked up.
In frustration, I just stared my database for 10 mins without a single blink, and then I noticed this thing 'showing 25 out of 78 rows'
I clicked on 'show all'
I felt retarded.
Okay I can give an excuse that last time I saw a database was a year ago, but still.. how retarded you need to be to not see this FUCKIN 'SHOW ALL' when it is on the TOP of the FUCKIN TABLE!!6
When you start a new project.
You create a new directory.
You start the IDE and create a new application project.
You type just 5 lines of code for testing it.
Then you compile and run.
You abort and retry.
Half a minute later a window pops up and Norton reports you that an executable has been removed because its suspicious and has a lack of reputation!!!11
Manager: That last dev you hired is working out well. Where did you get him from?
Dev: *Looking at new hire’s resume which only contains a single bootcamp and nothing else*
Dev: He’s a rescue.11
As devs we like to complain about our jobs. But I just want to take a moment and acknowledge how truly amazing writing software is. Nothing else has given me so much joy and happiness. The endless stream of new things to learn, the elusive art of clean code, and deep understanding of systems required for architecture. There is so much depth to this career we have all chosen and I hope you guys love it just as much as I do.5
You know, sometimes I wish I had friends who knew how to code or new a bit about the programming world. Then I could show them my projects and they could help out of they wanted. I could also get them to properly criticize my designs and script. Instead of the ones that just scroll past your shit and say nothing at all, you know, people who would actually give a little bit of a shit. Sigh.6
In 2012 my parents bought a new cordless phone with base station for their home. Worked fine.
Unless sometimes, nobody was reachable - mostly, when they weren't home - of course nobody would answer the phone.
Finally I called them one day, and mom answered the phon - "Hi, we are going to the mall now, when will you come ... bzz" - beep beep. Nothing until I came home.
They just came back from the mall, when I arrived. And mom said - this phone won't work - and took the cordless phone out of her bag, which she took to the mall ... yes. mom - that's no mobile ... I had to explain.
Started testing out the concept of a new application I'm developing (nothing special)
I always seem to play games instead of coding, so I'm developing a trainer which monitors for any open games and checks whether I have coded enough in a day to play games.
If I haven't coded for long enough, it will force close the game and warn me.
Further development to happen.27
Laziest dev thing I've ever done.
An annoying "I-do-nothing-but-delegate-and-make-fuzz" manager proposed to create a new application with redundant functionalities, that would take me at least half a year to build.
Practically, the app would never be used and I didn't want to put effort in that monstrosity.
So, naturally I...
Pressure the right people, schedule numerous meetings, become the project manager for all internal applications and... I cancel the project.4
Have I mentioned lately how much I LOVE the stability of slack (and electron apps in general)?
Got notified of a new message in slack, clicked the channel and this is what I see, even after a restart. No content or UI controls of any kind are being rendered. No workspaces, no loading spinners, no errors, no warnings ... just nothing.
I don't give a fuck about your integrations, apps, giphy, video calls, search, threading ... I just want to read text.
Piece of fucking shit11
How to make your employee suffer, drive them insane and having suicide tendency 101.
Delay the paycheck for 18 days but still asking about task progress like a normal day. Like nothing happened.
I can't pay water and electricity bills that due in 3 days, can't buy medicine,
can't buy gas for the bike,
next week i'm not gonna be able to buy food
The good thing is, i still got the internet, i can look for new jobs and play some games to forget how shit my life right now while the electricity lasts.
I have no suicide tendency, just to make it more hiperbolic 🤣8
Installed Linux on my grandma's computer because she uses it only to browse internet so there was nothing new to learn for her other than how to shut it down which is dead simple and the win10 she had previously was slow as fuck. The thing used to be unusable, now it runs fine, LXDE for the win on slow machines3
- Hey, have you heard of devRant?
- Look I have been a developer for more than 20 years; new IDEs, editors, languages or whatever that is, appear every week and they all just die. I'm sticking to my guns and nothing you can say can convince me to even look at this devCrap or whatever it is.
“There’s too many Firefox quantum rants...”
Lemme let you in on a little secret:
It’s nothing new, get over it.
Apple released a new phone.
Samsung or Google releases a phone.
Do any of you see a common theme? It’s the same people posting three metric fuck tons of posts about recent news. Wow, a tech person sharing tech news, imagine that. It’s just a phase, we all notice it. It’ll go away. Thanks. Have a nice day.13
Apple flips the bird to devs again...
So I go to release a new version of my app (critical updates and bug fixes from mgmt) and I had just updated my phone. Yeah, that was a fucking mistake.
“This version of Xcode is not compatible with the new version of iOS.”
Ok... update Xcode...
“The new version of Xcode is not compatible with your version of OSX”
WTF?! This version isn’t that old? Fine... update OSX. 5 hours later...
“Hey, just wanted to let you know that we decided to break every one of your web development tool setting and basically nothing works on your computer now, oh yeah, and we’re Apple so FUCK YOU.”8
With the new Dutch mass surveillance law comming soon, I am interested to know what you are doing with it?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don't live in the Netherlands?17
There are many ways of development...
Test Driven Development.
Behaviour Driven Development.
Acceptance-Test Driven Development.
YOLO Driven Development.
But nothing in this world is so frustrating as...
Buzzword Driven Development.
As soon as your managers spot a new technology, it needs to be integrated...
For fucks sake... New is not always better.8
My first of "Stop doing" series of rants:
STOP WRITING WRAPPER FUNCTIONS AROUND NATIVE FUNCTIONS THAT DO NOTHING OTHER THEN PASS PARAMETERS THROUGH.
If its not significantly configuring values prior to using in the native function or combining several results, leave it be so NEW DEVS SUCH AS MYSELF aren't having to learn your shitty naming conventions wrapped around every native function to the language. Im a JS dev, not a Dave's witty web stack dev.14
Tried deploying a new nginx server today, wrote the site config manually.
"Alright, done! Let's restart the service and look in the browser how it looks"
# systemctl restart nginx
> Process exited with error code.
> Unexpected } on line 13.
# vim /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/thatconfig.conf
"Wait wtf.. there's nothing wrong with the curly braces.. they're all opening and closing as they should..."
*takes another closer look*
Line 12, missed a fucking semicolon 😑
Append semicolon, :wq, # systemctl restart nginx
Works like a charm 🙄 all because of a stupid semicolon.
Until now I thought that the semicolon jokes were just lame.. but damn you semicolon, you are indeed the superior hide and seek player 😅10
So the new laptop stopped powering on. Nothing I did worked, so I used the warranty service. I probably should have taken the SSD out...18
I pranked my friends ex, nothing bad, just fun. First i screen shorted is desktop, flipped it and made it his new desktop. Then flipped the resolution, so my upsideiwn bf was cool. Lastly I change his mouse behavior, I set it for reversed.
Fun right? A typical person might get a lil pussy and have to fix it. Some might even fix it themselves. Regardless have a lil chuckle.
He smashes the monitor and keyboard, left them, both in a pile.5
Client had our company build them a site, they refused our hosting suggestions, and did not want any maintenance on their site.
They eventually left us as a client all together(they were getting other services so they occasionally got an edit or two) and sent several rude emails to delete their passwords so we wouldn't have access to their stuff anymore. I gladly gave the site over to the new company with a solid "good luck." I wanted nothing to do with this client anymore anyway.
Now I'm 9 months down the line and my AM sends me an email that the client wants maintenance. I'm already typing up a ranting email to tell them no, when I decide to check the site. There are WordPress php errors all over the site.
Idk what this other company did, but I want nothing to do with cleaning up someone else's screwups. If I were freelance, this would be a HUGE up charge.7
I won't fix your printer, and me working on your computer has nothing to do with the fact that you lost all your Facebook friends!
Oh. And while we are at it, your new TV has nothing to do with Gmail looking different!2
There’s nothing like opening a legacy system you didn’t build and has for some reason lasted the turn of the century, only to add a new feature without breaking anything.....
Would have been nice if I had written that JS function before saving the other file 🙄
There’s nothing like building in production 💩
i love programming, but have done too many 12 hour days recently.
spent last two days recharging by doing nothing but play the new Doom game.
i have a great job so my boss supports me.5
It's a non-working holiday at the office so I'm at home doing nothing. I asked my boyfriend what to do for the whole day then he said "Spend your day to something you really enjoy".
So I'm building a new project. What an exciting day!1
We needed a design for our Android and iOS App, everything should be done by an award-winning design agency. What we received was only a design for iPhone X. Only mockups as PDF, no icons, nothing. So we requested the Android design and an iPhone 8 one including icons, color codes and whatnot.
1 FUCKING MONTH LATER we got the new designs... They are all the FUCKING SAME DESIGN where some mockups were "displayed" on an android phone, and some on an iPhone. Still no icons though.
3 weeks pass and we geht FUCKING sketch files, to extract the shit ourselves. Thank you for nothing.
It took again nearly 3 month to get a "proper" Android design and all the assets. You could clearly see, that they never did anything for Android but well, we had to work with it. Award-winning design agancy my ass.5
There is nothing better then getting new phone and first thing you do when you came back is flashing custom ROM on it.
8.1 android on 2013 device ouuuuuuu yeahhhhh.12
You know what really grinds my gears? When new employees start shouting out suggestions of what feature we should do.. and how stupid this/that thing now.. or how slow that page is.. or how there's a bug somewhere.
WHAT WOULD'VE WE DONE WITHOUT YOUR OPINION?! thank you so much!!!
+10 points if their job has nothing to do with product or development
SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP
"Linux is shit because nothing works on my new DOM 2017/2018 laptop!"
Yes it's true that nothing will work if you put your finking ubuntu 14.04 installation with a fucking old 3.13 kernel in your new Laptop!
Update. Your. Fucking. System.6
Alright. Two dead Commodores.
Over 15 years before I was born? ✅
No idea how BASIC works? ✅
Internet at the ready? ✅
So far I've checked various chips for visible damage, and nothing except a blown fuse on both machines. Apparently it takes dual 9vAC and single 5vDC. The 9 powers the SID and the video output, the VIC-II heatsink is off, and I've tested the PSU voltages and one of the 9v's is dead. I'll be getting new fuses and a new PSU soon. Any recommendations on other things to check or things to do when they're done? Pic included because why not.12
At work, an idiot who has never worked on machine learning before and understands nothing about it: "You know what, machine learning isn't actually hard. It is just basic statistics and then you download the model online and that's it! There's nothing else you are doing!"
Honestly, i hate ignorant morons who generalize stuff they don't clearly understand.5
Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6
For a large team project, I was working on the website. I implemented a log-in page that took me a bit of time since it was my first time.
He grade that process poorly saying he has seen log-in pages all the time and it was nothing new or exciting...
YOU ARE A PROFESSOR FOR AN INTRO CLASS! YOUR JOB IS TO LOOK AT THE EXACT SAME THING EVERY SEMESTER, SHITHEAD.
Why does every single and small update need to be at least 5GB? And why am I required to update you so fucking often? You are not fixing anything, so don’t even pretend to! Most of the time it is just to support the latest .x update in iOS. Can’t be too hard to update the SDK without updating the entire shit IDE! 😡
And guess what: I JUST UPDATED YOU, SO WHERE IS YOUR FUCKING NEW VERSION??? HOW CAN I WAIT 45 MINUTES AND AFTER THAT YOU DID NOTHING!?! HOW CAN I HAVE THE SAME VERSION AS BEFORE??? NOW I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD YOU AGAIN YOU FUCKING PEASE OF SHIT 😡😡😡1
I'm at a pretty cool company today, learning new stack now. Everyone is helpfull and teaches me a lot.
I remember at my first job, when I just started, my boss sent me a MINIFIED .js file (just one file and nothing else) and said "it doesnt work, please fix this". After OBVIOUSLY not being able to fix it, at that moment, I started to doubt my choice to become a web dev.
I turned out to be pretty okay. But, fucking hell, thinking back, that "ex-boss" of mine could potentially influence my later career decisions and not in a good way.4
Today I quit my job for a new position as Back End developer using a new programming language I totally know nothing about it!!!
I am not sure about my decision... but I would like to take the risk....2
Been sick since Wednesday with a heavy feeling of dizziness and vertigo (BPPV). Basically I got sick in the week I intentionally planned nothing to tackle my workload and get some stuff done, but I was physically unable to work on it until now.
Meeting is on Monday.
Also preorder my new book on O'Reilly, much appreciated.
(No, I am not panicking, pls send help)3
useless fucking client bastards. i sent an email to all clients 2 months ago about gdpr and the impending deadline. Explaining that they need to update privacy and check webforms and internal procedures etc are compliant. I said I would help them implement any changes to their respective sites. Heard nothing from these fuckers... except this morning an email “what does the new gdpr mean for our website?”
FUCK OFF AND READ MY EMAIL, FOLLOW THE LINKS DO THE RESEARCH AND FUCKING SORT YOUR CUNTING SELVES OUT, I AM NOT YOUR FUCKING LAWYER.2
Friday evening. Just finishing new website for my company. (Had to build it with wordpress) Boss wants to bring it online right before weekend. Switch domain to production. Nothing works anymore. Fuck Wordpress. 👿9
It's like musicians and gear acquisition syndrome, coders love to have new stuff even if it's over-engineered, already exists, or redundant.
Hate dealing with tech hipsters 🙄 is nothing tried and true anymore?2
So yesterday i solved 7 tickets on my own for this project while the teammate was "testing".
Solved nothing and checked fb or new everytime i took a look at his screen.
Can comeone please fire this guy?1
Got the cheapest laptop I could find that would run Windows mixed reality.
Installed Linux subsystem for Windows and Ubuntu.
Nothing but giant flying terminal windows across my view of a virtual Seascape.
This is my new home.4
just remembered watching a video where a little shit wannabe programmer was interviewed by another shit wannabe it professional "hacker" and the first shit claimed he designed a new language that is better with a compiler 10 times faster and better than gcc when he demonstrated his language it was nothing but a header file with couple of define statements for different C function.
and this dude was in the news and was glorified by people and shit
I'm glad i left "my" country3
TL;DR - Developers, do not buy HP Stream models laptop unless they are selling at $1.
Cannot even handle Sublime + Firefox + LAMP use case well. On lubuntu OS with literally nothing else on it. Sublime crashes every hour.
Now I am learning how to code using other tools before I can buy a better replacement for it. Failure with gedit; very slow and sluggish. Currently trying Geany.
It's a pain in the ass to learn new tool especially when you are so accustomed to something. 😣16
Oh man, what an unfuckingbelievible situation when you are activating
1) new user account
2) for new cellphone
3) with freshly issued SIM card.
You're waiting for your goddamn verification code to sent to phone. And you wait, and nothing happens and you click "send new code" until you get warning that too many codes has been requested. Then you start good ole debugging. You browse forums, help pages- try this and that, nothing ever works. But you keep trying for two friggin sequential nights. Guess what, you li'l fuckface, you're debugging wrong thing, because suddenly, only the man in the sky knows why, you get an urge to ask someone else to call you and when they do it they hear that your number is temporarily closed. No, the bills are fine, you can call and send messages from that very number, but all the motherfucking incoming traffic is blocked.
That's why you didn't get your verification codes, bitch.
Thanks for nothing, carrier.2
Fuck Apple Two-Factor Authentication.
I am a developer with multiple accounts and this two-factor authentication is a fucking joke! I spoke to this idiot on the line who told me that I had to create an administrator on my computer to login to a developer account of mine. I hung up the phone and told her to "Fuck Off"
It's a fucking waste of time. Apple has not had an innovation since Steve Jobs died; each upgrade does nothing new compared with the last one. What's new things are there between 10.14 and 10.8??? Nothing. Except it's a lot fucking slower.8
Nothing interesting. Just 11 GB ram using and increases steadily. After restart app the bug was again. Okaaay, I thought. I reboot my PC, but bug was adamant. Well, then I update phpStorm and everything became fine. Ok, JetBrains, good idea to say user about new release version and make update:) Seriously, it works fine. I think every company should adopt this idea:)8
So I’m working on a project right and I don’t run it after writing 104 lines of untested code and it doesn’t work.
Which is expected but then I do some stuff and fix that, I get a new error which is great cause I’m getting closer.
Cut to tonight. I’m trying to hunt and kill this bug. And after doing nothing but copying the code to another text file so I can upload that copy and get help.
I decide to run it with a little just print statement in it to make sure it’s definitely broken and I’m not asking online for no reason.
And.. it works.. WHAT???
I uncomment the rest of the function and get rid of the print statement and scream because ITS WORKING!!
I MEAN IT HAS BUGS BUT THEYRE BUGS I CAN FIX AND FOCUS ON AFTER I FREAK OUT ABOUT IT WORKING AFTER ME CHANGING FUCKING NOTHING.10
You know that figurative bonner you have when working on new/exciting projects?
I used to be like that here...
Today I realized that I lost it a long time ago...
That sucks hard, every little script I do on the side I feel excited , every functionality I develop on the job is a fucking mirror of some other shit that no one uses on another mirror project that brings nothing new to the table.5
I got a new PC.
Began to install shiz.
Theres nothing more annoying that power outages.
Made an Android app a while ago. I needed some pet project so I decided to go with Java for Android. First time, no experience at all.
So everything went ok, I had a little help from a colleague, structuring code, and pushing to the store. Work done app was doing ok.
A year later I came back to this project. I needed to fix a bug - date time and daylight savings crap. 😥
Spent a week on it. Ready to push a new version to the store, with some extra features! Build apk. All good.
Wait. I need to sign the APK? Wtf. I had to format my hard drive. How do I recover my fucking certificate?
*Google's for a while*
No fucking way. I can't restore the certificate. Or get the keystore back. The solution is to create a new app with a brand new package name?
Thanks for nothing, I'm done with Android development.9
Got a new job last October. And so far, I've nothing to rant about, it's absolutely perfect, too perfect.. Me scared of karma3
The philisophy I am following for building my new PC isn't "What can I do with this kind of hardware", it's "what CAN'T I do with this kind of hardware"
I stop shopping when my answer is "Nothing"2
Working in a startup company acquired by some €^%€*^^ from singapore, second month no sallary(the first Local CEO) paid us.. now nothing...
I went to new interviews today.. HR and later 2 hours C# Coding test... definitely I was fucking good in the test, they called me hours later with positive feedback and new interview tomorrow , and they want me to team lead now 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 positive vibrations guys🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻4
Okay so today I opened a link to buy a screen for my Raspberry pi on my phone(Chrome browser) and was simultaneously using FB on my Laptop in mozilla.
And that very moment I had ads on FB to but that screen.
Now I know it's nothing new, but at the moment of realization it just felt so creepy.
Privacy literally doesn't exist anymore!18
Sales sold to a new enterprise client ecommerce solution tailored for small/local businesses as enterprise solution.
That software is able to handle hundreds of products, but we are trying to insert over 200k+ of them.
After inserting around 10k, the whole system dies and nothing works because all requests time out.7
Got onto google for a little while. (Im sad from it) @linuxxx will hate me now.
But what i saw was some company presenting Smart Mirror like if they invented it. Ohhhhhhhh man did i get angry so i posted photo of mine now broken one and even with more stuff then their and posted it to their FB page and wrote comment to it saying that this stuff was here for over 5 years now and that its nothing new and its pretty cheap to do.
I was boiling inside when i saw it so i must have made a rant about it.1
Yesterday night, pushed code that work normally to prod server, website down, internal server error, too many connection to MySQL server, tried to fix it for 4 hours, nothing to do, removed the new code, still the same problem, in my head, I told myself that I'm not good at programming (not the first time), send an email to the host, they tell me the problem is from them and they fixed it. And now I know I'm not bad enough.2
*right click on image*
*spams right click, thinking about getting a new mouse*
[small modal shows up: "this content is protected!"]
*laughs in developer's console*
I never thought I'd get to see a website that "protects" its content by disabling right click, I'm moved :')3
Last night I dreamed that I figured out a new complicated computer language... it was the best feeling until I woke up and realized it didn’t exist and all that work was for nothing!! Why can’t dreams be more productive?!4
Certainly considering handing in my notice soon.
1. Paid minimum wage with no prospect of a raise
2. Spending £200 a month on travel
3. Traveling for almost 4 hours (70 miles) a day on bus and train
4. Promised training but nothing produced for 8 months
5. Expected to now pay for further travel
6. Not taken seriously...
Yep, need a new job in the Birmingham, UK area19
> Have nothing to do with programming
> Starts shitty coding bootcamp online, possibly for free
> Learns html/css/js course
> Builds to-do app (dont know how to deploy it with anything but github pages, but who cares)
> Takes a week to finish course
> Gets e-certificate and posts it on LinkedIn
> Adds web and front end dev as Professional Skill on LinkedIn
> Complains how bad the tech industry is for 'new entries and beginners'2
I am just as popular as my Dad but nothing like my Dad. Did I mention that I make new babies everyday.1
Always include import statements. Always. No excuses. I don't care if you can't be arsed to copy-n-paste an extra bit of code.
Nothing worse than trying to learn something new, copy-n-paste a sample code then your wonderfully helpful IDE asks you which of the 8 matching packages you wish to import.
When someone asks me, "where did you get that", I don't simply say, "a shop"!!
If you don't include your imports in answers then I hate you.6
Sat for hours programming in a great new feature. At the end I tested it... and nothing happened. It didn't even have any effect. It just continued as normal. Talk about deflating enthusiasm...2
If nothing new is posted here I go to Facebook. If I exhaust the feed there I come here. Such has been my life for the past one hour 😶
Several months of work got deployed and suddenly the app stops displaying user submitted images. No new changes that looks related went live and the images seem to be stored and read by the code. Nothing looks odd about it other than images not displaying. 4 hours of frustrated developers later an accidental newline at the top of a routing file is removed and all is fine.1
Can you rant about yourself?
I was reading about the AWS outage, with little to no interest. I didn't know what it was and thus figured it wouldn't affect me.
Some time goes by and I come up with this 300++ vote post. I'm witty, I'm smart, but when I want to upload a photo it doesn't work.
Must be the app right? I restart, nope nothing. Whatever..
Sometime later I have a dashing new photo for tinder. Surely to give me all the matches. Nope, can't upload it.
Must be my phone or Internet then.
Restart everything, nothing is working. Complete madness, no devRant upvotes and I'm still single.
I surrender, give up. Which is one of the worst things to do for me as a dev.
Today. Which is the cherry on the cake. I finally see my connection to the incident. I feel stupid and annoyed by myself.
God dammit Julian, pay attention.
Can't do anything else (level it and such) until I get new motors...
the steppers I ordered one month ago returned back to China, FUCKKKKKK
one more month waiting.
So many project ideas.... nothing concrete.
What should I do now? Did my BT controlled car, the CNC, ... Any ideas?9
I'm a dev and I like to rant
And who says it has to always be about Dev stuff ?
So!!! I ve spent 2 days as a junior dev and I feeel not well... 1) I am the worst dev in the company with no experience 2) brain-dead 3) feel like I wasted 2 days and learnt nothing, I guess in theory it's something but realistically I had no "it clicked" /pure genius /astounded myself / made major new brain connections moments
So what's going to happen now. ? When will I wake up? How do I wake up ?12
My most useless meeting was probably the review meeting for a new team I had to consult for a short while for. A review to find why nothing gets done on time. Everyone showed up an hour late, including the boss.4
Another one of my job recruiter ranting posts
I couldn't add all of it in but they want a senior developer with 4 years of experience (which is I don't believe is senior worthy) but pay peanuts ($25 -$35, is not a lot in New Zealand)
I don't understand how companies can expect someone to be able to be in charge of all their development and expect to pay absolutely nothing, no wonder there are more companies that want to be contracted for work, then being tied down
Oh yeah and the recruiter couldn't even be bothered typing senior mobile developer, they just typed software developer.. fucking lazy
What a fucking joke...2
Do you know this:
Sometimes you come in to work develop a little bit and theres nothing to do for the rest of the day. You ask multiple times - still nothing. You have 10 minutes left until you can leave and your boss hits you with "oh dude here is a new project and it has to be done now"... THAT FUCKING SHIT TAKES LIKE 3 HOURS TO BE DONE AND YOU JUST TOLD ME NOW THAT IT HAS TO BE DONE TODAY OMG2
FX [ Change ISP... ]
"We'll send you a new router before the change over!"
Nothing in the post today..
Changeover is tomorrow..
So, its going to arrive tomorrow then.. ?
(Password/etc. is in the box with the new router..)7
Oh my god, this client. Everything is equally important. When finishing a feature halfway, a new future gets priority. Nothing is finished, this whole app is a bunch of loose ends. FML.3
Watching reviewers on a website review the new Eminem album 12 hours after its release is like watching a 10 year old review a scientific paper by Stephen Hawking with a quick skim.
Yes, the child should be entitled to their opinion. But No, no one with any sense should be listening to this child’s opinion.
If you gave a lil pump “album” a 7/10 and Kamikaze a 4/10 then your opinion is invalid, end of story.
But it’s all good. 95% of people are stupid and that’s just how it works, it’s nothing to be angry about. Just try to be in the 5%.
End of rant.8
The display on my new RPi4 doesn't work properly. Plugged the SD card into a model 3 and everything is fine. RPi4 boots and I can SSH into it but any display I connect it to detects nothing.
Fuckin piece of shit.10
1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.
That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.
2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.
That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.
3. Trust nothing that you see.
Bugs are everywhere
4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.
When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.
During the summer I was part of a three person brand new software team. One of my co-workers had a rubber duck, and explained rubber duck debugging. I brought in my own duck and it turned out to be identical to hers. On the last day I left my duck there with my other co-worker, so now they will both have ducks to talk to when nothing works! 🐤🚫🐛4
The moment I need internet to do things (npm with angular), but the company moved to a new building and internet is screwed. It'll still take a while to set up. So now I'm sitting here, ranting on devrant and doing nothing.
My exact face and thoughts right now:1
Some years ago but it's funny.
The company give to me a new laptop with windows Home Edition,
After few months I have installed Pro Version.
1 month later the laptop didn't work anymore, nothing on display, no beeps, zero.
Tried to replace ram and check but nothing works.
The CTO asked the supplier and they asked about SO, and they said it's not turning ON because i have installed Windows Pro.
Than the CTO had a brilliant idea: try put the hard disk in another laptop and install Windows Home, and put back in the defective one. I refused to to that, it's stupid and he insisted, then I put the laptop in his desk and I said: if you want do this you can do, im not stupid enough to do this.
He got really mad, 1 week later i got a brand new one 😅5
I was working on a new feature for this legacy project.. Just minding my own buisness then all out of the blue I got an email from our client (before the email I exported the live database because I needed to reproduce a weird bug) saying the sync stopped working
The database needs to sync every 15 minutes because it has a master-master relationship with a 3rd party database..
So I was like shiiit! Did I do that!? So I checked the logs, nothing... I called the 3rd part to check if they have problems, nothing.. Then I checked the network logs... Again all fine... 30 nervous minutes later, I got a new mail... Saying it finally synced... Still have no clue what happened or if it ever was a problem... God damn clients man...
Mom: hey I can't get into the phone, the PIN and PUK aren't working. See if you can fix it otherwise you'll have to go to the communications company to ask for a new card (my mom is working and can't do it)
Me: //gives it another try. Doesn't work. Searches online. Yep, can't do anything, it needs a new card
Me: sorry mom, you have to get a new card, there's nothing I can do.
Me: why did you ask me for help, again?
Mom: well because you can do things and fix things and so, and I thought that maybe you could fix it
I am bored !!! No feature request and No bug was reported from last 2 days... Nothing to resolve today.. I am thinking should I create new bug and release it as feature??5
My head hurts.
I have a lot of new shit to learn (previous rant), processes to adopt, and missing requirements to chase. Last time, we spent four hours in a meeting that's gonna happen every two weeks and now I also have to allocate time to teach this other developer. Who the hell taught me when I was new?! Just kidding, such is my life, teaching despite not being taught.
All of these while I'm working on my own tickets then the scrum master asks me to read up the Confluence pages and build the backend for the new version. Nothing that I can't reason with since I'm working on something of higher priority but all of these are lodged into my brain and it's hurting.
Time to write things down, ignore them for a while, and take one step at a time.
Nothing more refreshing than seeing the code definitely do the opposite of what its line comments say it does in the first file you open to get to know the new project 😅
not sure if this totally classifies as a rant, but here goes:
so my Pi is giving a lot of problems. can't install software, keep getting weird error messages. so I try DD a new image onto the card. does not work at all. tried on three different machines :D
next I try run rm -rf /
it's obviously totally fucked. nothing works. pull the plug and plug it in again to see what happens.... it boots up again :D all the commands are back. no files are gone.
and that's when I was like fuck this and I returned the sd card :D2
Just dd'ed my root partition. Nothing important lost. Had this system for last 2 years. Maybe time to try some new distro.6
What time do you get up on work days? I'm starting to think I should have me time in morning (reading, learning, coding my own things) before going to work.
I've think I've come the the conclusion that this job/team is sorta chaotic and tedious and there's no skill growth. Not learning anything new. Usually just something broken, integrate some new feature, build something that I've already built before but differently for this specific case. Nothing fun or challenging, or new.
And also tired of trying to be a "role model", make things right. I tend to like to keep things orderly, documented, well tested and clean but everyone else seems to just bulldoze their way to get whatever they need, leaving a mess behind... It's been like 2yrs already but the technical debt seems to be growing not shrinking...18
Not exactly a dev enemy, but similar.
A new radiation protection regulation has been in force in Germany since 2019. October I finished a super duper important document for this and this has been with the TÜV ever since. First there is nothing happening and then there are allegedly inconsistencies in it, which, however, all of which were due to shoddy work with the "expert."
There is a german word for this type of person: Krümelkacker.
He faults every little thing in side-by-page letters, causes long delays, and in the end is often wrong.
But I have to work with him -.-6
Two new Laptops arrived at our office today. Tried to install Manjaro on a USB with different Windows Tools because Windows Laptop was the easiest to access. Nothing Fucking worked!
Searched and found a Linux laptop.
First try success
dd is love ♥️3
Have no Degree (the paper, I did study), currently doing a master to actually get the damn paper.
Have been working with a good pay for a few years now.
The Degree will help pass some HR filters on the dumbest companies, but sometimes you do want to work there.
The degree does nothing in the new professional word in this profession.
BUT sometimes, a degree gets you information that you will not get on your own that help you grow faster. Talking about the basics that everyone says are useless... But they are not.
Took some leave recently to interview for a new job. Back to work to find that I have nothing to do. Asked for more work and got nothing. This place just gives me constant reminders of why I'm looking elsewhere4
I'm a tech lead for a new agile project for a manager who knows nothing about agile. Having to work on a chart that shows exactly how many sprints each milestone will be and when it will complete for like, 17 sprints from now when requirements aren't even set. Wtf?7
What a day.
Reviewing and merging a months worth of work, configuring cloudformation for the new changes, and deploying to the staging environment when err mer gawd AWS decides to shit it's self.
Nothing like spotting "rollback in progress" and then not being able to access the EC2 instance... or ANY instance for that matter, from the console, so I'm like fine , I'll just wait for the roll back to finish.... it's usually only 5-10 minutes but no.... 3 hours later.
Guess I know what I'll be trying again tomorrow.
Started a new job not super long ago with the intention of "learning new tech" and so I get my wish, I'm thrown into a project as the LEAD ENGINEER
And my junior dev proceeds to run circles around me and I know literally nothing about what is going on in this project aside from the architectural / feature planning discussions I've had with marketing/junior
I've been trying to learn vuejs for what seems like weeks and weeks and I'm just not "getting it" I come from a strong oop php background and this paradigm is using tons of tech I know basically nothing about. Every time I talk to junior I get super depressed cause he's speeding along and I'm still completely clueless.. what the FUCK do I do7
Hate my fucking ‘Logic’ class. Teaching us if, or, and, etc statements and when something is true or false so far. Fair enough, part of logic. But fucking 6 classes on the same topic, isn’t helpful. Especially since it feels like the same shit I learnt myself when I was 13 and a junior in High School.
People are all surprised at it, even the Computer Science majors. This shouldn’t be a shock to you on how these statements work if you’ve coded for a few minutes in the University. You should’ve learnt it in your first programming class.
Ugh, just how I feel about this class. Have to take it to get my degree, otherwise I would’ve dropped it by now >.> Waste of time and money for me.12
As a developer you have to learn!
Your whole fucking work life!
I totally give you credits for being a good programmer in 1990, but you have learnt NOTHING in the last fucking 30 years.
If you don't know anything about MVC....
and nothing about object oriented programming,
and nothing about all the new cool features,
SHUT THE FUCK UP!6
That joy of finally having them all passed.
I had stupid mistakes like: insertNewItem, but inside I use update T_T
project still fairly new, but this time I decided to write unit tests as I go instead of delaying till the end and writing nothing lol
Its so disheartening to see how easily replacable you are if you work for someone else, no matter how hard you worked. The moment you say " I am resigning", the behaviour of your manager changes so dramatically. Its like you don't exist anymore. No more new interesting work, no nothing. Why!!!!7
So the new guy convinces my employer that he is a Machine Learning Expert. Nothing is wrong until He even convinces my employer that he can do Machine Learning with HTML (<==== is not a Programming Language); This is the time my IQ instantly dropped to ```Patrick Star```.8
Perhaps one of the most important things I will ever learn in life is how powerful regularity is. Read up on a topic once? Understand nothing? Read more random shit on it. Keep reading. And then stare in awe as things fall into place.
I'm writing this out not because people don't know this. Almost everyone knows this. But it's nice to be reminded of it. It's nice to be reminded that learning new things and honing bew skills is never easy. It's nice to be reminded that there's great knowledge and skills waiting to be learned.
This is not meant as motivation so much as it is meant as a reminder. Our colleagues may be garbage. Our clients may be garbage. Our bosses, the interns, the new dev, and almost certainly ourselves, are almost always garbage.
But if you've learned 1-2 new things today, the day wasn't garbage.
I'm just learning move semantics...
New CTO pushes policy change to all browsers to open Facebook Workplace on every new tab and as start page.
Locks option to change it.
This also kills restoring tabs from past session.
New CTO handles the complaints
'It's fine to complain, we don't even have to agree. If this is important to you, then come up with a suggestion on how to solve this for all our employees. Business equirement is that one page is shown at startup, that's it. This has nothing to do with Workplace.'16
Just posted a comment, and I realise it should be a rant.
In reply to stalkCoder (i think):
| At first there was nothing
| $: git init
| And then there was light
A new creation myth appears.
$ git add --all
$ git commit -m "Update 32 at 2:48 AM"
$ git push
The new creation myth is destroyed by the pure rage of a thousand Git commit message standards.
Some days ago I was talking to the main IT guy at my new job, we still work on different dept so I don't know anything about him.
As I start come general chat I begin to realize He don't know what a repository is, what the GIT for github mean or even nothing about the ancient CVS.
I'm starting to worry about where am I.6
Wow.... FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!
I just destroyed my raspberry. Miscalculated the resistor I need and RiP. Took 2 seconds and BOOOOM. Nothing is working anymore :( 2 weeks of wasted free time. Guess I'll have to buy a new one. Want to finish my project so hard10
TL;DR Shit programer trying pass off stealing code as "Recycling"
Client hires senior dev. He lied and knows nothing. Has been causing havoc in production since day 1. My crusades to defend production have been without much success.
Since he wants to LITERALLY put his name on every big project, he finds any reason to make a new version of it (or make a slight astetic modification) to say he did something.
The client doesn't know or care about the programming side of things. Which means it is incredibly difficult to get him to understand the issues this brings. Not to mention that the "senior dev" is acting as a consultant to the client, altering the facts.
The piece of shit, is trying to make a new version of a big project. It was originally made by my mentor. Again, if you are using someone else's work to complete your own, I don't care. But if you take 99% of another person's work and then say...
"I took and existing project, which was similar to what I'm trying to make. Then I modified it to fit our needs."
Fuck you man!
You took someone else's work. Now you're trying to present it as your own. No references to our team. Again, there is literally nothing new about this project. It's exactly like the original. The client didn't even ask for this.3
That moment when you have hundreds of lines of code for your website, then you wanted to add a simple modal which looks great on w3school.
Then you recreate the modal on your site, click the button and nothing happens....
So now, you are spending hours trying to figure out why it's not working, new file to test, tried another modal concept, change the CSS, refresh the page until the F5 button doesn't even work anymore!!!
To find out, there is a extra "." in the href file tag plus the tag is in a id not a class
The longer I live, the longer I am unsure what the meaning of my life is.
Yes I am a creative person in a way that I can create something out of nothing, but unfortunately all my work is almost invisible. Is the meaning of a developer guy to be a magician? He does something and *wooosh*
//magic happens here
there is a thing which he forgot how it works within a month. Why can't I just talk about my work with other people than those from the IT business? I don't think to be that important, but sometimes it appears that without you and me nothing will really work nowadays.
And to be honest with you guys, I am too slow. I can adapt new concepts and new programming languages, but I feel like getting overruned by all that new stuff appearing each day. Am I supposed to be that super hero named"superbrain"? Is that still healthy?
wtf, my life is a miracle, an oracle and a hurricane (and some times it is even great)!
I am confused!1
I want to cry... Fuck it.. shiit. .. :( :( ;(
Wasted half of the Weekend to Setup MySQL on my vServer which uses ssl encryption, have specific User and so on.
Thought: well, the User mysql is not so good as a Name. Drop it, you don't need it.
What did I? Instead of Drop User mysql , I typed Drop Database mysql.
Fuck that fucking Shit. I'm so sad right now. Broked the complete MySQL Database. Nothing is working anymore. And the server is new, I've Just made One Backup. Deleted this a few hours ago.. also accidently.
Help me :( Shit :( so sad :( Now, I don't have Motivation anymore to work with the vServer :(3
Managed to get my awful phone rooted and Lineage working on it despite it not being supported on my phone.
I actually really like my phone now, its almost like a brand new one.
I know nothing about phones, so this really was a cool accomplishment for me. I bet there are a ton of new things my phone is capable of now that I don't even know about.
So far, I am very pleased and excited to learn how to use my phone to its full advantage from now on3
I had a week off. During that time nothing new was pushed to remote by my boss.
On the last day, before I started working again, literally Sunday night, a pile of garbage non-urgent changes were pushed directly to remote.
I guess it wasn't possible to wait another day for a review. I didn't really care much at that point, but it was just another confirmation, that quitting is the right thing to do.1
L1 support requested to terminate an EC2 instance on which one of our apps seemed to be misbehaving. The node was terminated after few min.
L1 later realized that that instance didn't belong to that app, but instead it was one of the RabbitMQ nodes.
Then, after some panicking we remembered that HA was enabled, so nothing should've been lost.
Later, we realized that the recent RMQ upgrade necessitated a new cluster on which HA was NOT enabled!1
WTF!!!! I come back from a 1 week vacation and nothing has been done and some things seem to have gone to shit...
I transferred the responsibility of running and supporting a report thats supposed to go live to someone else. I show up today and check and well none of the reports for the last 2 weeks were run (first report was already late).
I sent out a few emails asking for feedback on a new JSON log I wanted to add so it can be used by ELK. The people I was asking (a senior dev on a sister team that shares ownership) never replied like he said he would.2
Nothing really successful, but someone once wrote an article about my old buggy version of JS select plugin...on website noone visits :( Anyway, I think, the new version is pretty good and fast and would be happy to see it somewhere, especially search is fast af.
I have one more project which could have been successful. Never finished, never ended and never used...no time for it...
I had joined a new company and got access to their codebase. They were updating password on MD5 hash of user name and their email in get request. No password validation, no token based authentication, nothing.
That's it, you get change user password.
I just migrated Test data into Production. If I start a new project, Murphy's law indicates that my phone will ring, and the migration will have been a total loss.
If I sit and do nothing, Murphy's corollary tells me the data migration will be a success?3
I was cozy at home, coding and talking trash with my duck, then "real" life called and now I'm out in the cold. Nothing new here, just wanted to complain about something 😓
I'm fairly new here, so I can't wait to see that one person who knows nothing about tech or software development/engineering join devRant and have no clue what anything is.
upgrade to the latest pre-release of Xamarin forms for a shiny new feature, now nothing works even after reverting. You'd think I should know better by now.2
Received a new HP Probook 640 G2 laptop for work, everyone else has theirs as 64bit machines. Yet the idiots who handle hardware and software installs installed windows for a 32bit machine. Well at least I get waste half a day and do nothing while they redo everything and then I have to still get shit done later.
When you have two managers and one of them is trying to screw you into a position on his team even though you have made it clear that you want nothing to do with that type of development.
I am looking for a new job now...3
Aight I’m new to this thing but it’s cool. I’m good with basically nothing but python and pygame. I know HTML and CSS but that doesn’t even count. Welp if someone want to work on something with me to motivate me to learn something be my guest I need help
happy new year! what do yall have planned for this year? I'm thinking about writing me up a miniature jarvis to automate my Web Development business, nothing really special just automated invoices, website installs, calendar, contract signing, etc. where all I have to do is type up a requirement list and code2
Just moved countries and started a new job at an awesome company, which is so great I have nothing yet to rant about.
Oh here goes: almost three weeks with no internet at home and no end in sight.2
Nothing like a new full stack position with three frameworks I have no knowledge of to make or break me
Shouldn't the following actually fucking work? Because right now, changing it does fucking nothing.
And in the relevant css file:
margin: 0 auto;
Edit: Jesus fucking christ I'm blind. Had the css href attribute misspelled as 'hred'.
Shoot me now. Just get it over with.5
Finished my planned work for current sprint 3 days early. Nobody needs help, nothing to do until new tasks are given out. Expected to feel great. Feeling useless.4
Hey, I have a cool idea about a new way to solve a problem our users are having!
Type type type, now I have a working prototype! Show it to the team, everyone loves it. Polish it a little, it works really great!
Now let's test it on an iPad like the ones our users have... Nope, nothing works, undefined is not a function.
F*CK YOU SAFARI, you're why we can't have nice things. 😤
Nothing feels better than seeing yourself doing better as a self taught web developer compare to some jsackass with a CS degree who talks about what he learnt in school couple years ago. Who cares? You can't do shit at work and I don't even know why you work here if you have no desire to learn new things. If he graduated in late 90s he would still be coding in PHP 3.0.2
Okay so one of my friends got an offer for a more powerful server with 128GB RAM, ok processor because the current server load is high. When they got the offer of the new one I saw there was in the licenses part, Windows Server 2016. Which to me seems worst thing you can do for just using PHP, MySQL and nothing active directory or really windows specific. Can some of u please write in short why use linux for servers instead of shitdows. And it would clearly cost much less. Because I guess if other tell it they, the client, will agree...16
Company logic: "we need a new software manager for the program. This guy has worked on every piece of our product. Including as team lead of one of the teams. But wait he has never signed time cards. We better bring in this guy who has been in the company less than a year and is a known job shopper to do it instead."
Long story short, I am getting a new software manager that knows nothing about our product. Fun4
Got my new pc up and running, asrock x370 killer sli/ac mobo, ryzen 2200g cpu and radeon rx550 with 12g ram (don't ask). Nothing fancy but sure beats my old am2 system! New pc is so quiet :D9
Some days as a new programmer I feel like a complete loser. Spent 6 hours trying to solve a problem and nothing has worked. Ugh gonna have to try to sleep this one off...5
For the past week I've been rewriting an application with just pure php, html, js and css (with a sprinkle of bootstrap), and I gotta say that in this new modern world of frameworks & CMSs, it feels great building a "problem solving" application with nothing but my bare hands!4
I got yet another scammer calling me, this time it's something wrong with my computer LOL calling from Microsoft.
I flat out said this:
OH so you're a scammer right? Because there is nothing wrong with my PC.
I know I was supposed to post the other number on 4chan, but where exactly would I do so? there are so many categories and I'm new to 4chan
The guy hung up immediately!
Here ya go: 05967175950 bastard deserves to go to jail scamming normal PC users out of their information!3
Just reinstalled my laptop. Went from Elementary's Gnome Desktop to i3 Window manager. It's nothing new. Used it before. But I love how it feels like a completely new device.2
So since starting my new role I have had nothing to rant about. That changed today.
HR waited til one day past payroll cut off to issue my paperwork. Meaning I get paid at my old rate this month and then get back pay in my November pay slip.
Those mother cunting bastards waited one day extra to screw me for the whole month.
I've been waiting since the end of September for these twat monkeys to get off their rotting arses and sort this and they do it one day late.
It's a good job that I don't know where they are located, nothing good would be waiting for them if I did.
As this got cut from the tags:
HR please kindly go find a rotting puss filled dick and shove it up your lazy fucking arse you pitiful wastes of human meat bags.1
"We're scanning the code at the office tonight.
We're looking for bugs to start up a fight.
There's a melting feeling in our brains.
But it's nothing new, you know it drives us insane."
Metallica - Build & Deploy
To be fair, I don't have my degree yet (just two more semesters...) but I'm working as a dev second year now and studying is really nothing compared to real-world experience. Yeah, I know I haven't said nothing new.1
i hate to admit it, but android chrome new tab sometimes provides some amazing programming news.
like this one about rust fuzzing.
i know little about rust and nothing about fuzzing (although I did know about a similar concept used for videogame testing).
damn, this is the type of thing that makes me want to become excited to learn a lang.3
When you get talked into a new job by a friend and leave your old one. Just to find out the new place is nothing as advertised and you dislike it more every second 💩
is there anyway for me to not get bothered by the fact that my team mates know that i have no task / work in hand ? as per development cycle, dev has 10 story points = 5 days . after that it is going to get tested for next 5 days and after that new sprint starts and this goes on .
i have given my work in first 5 days. now if testers don't come up with bugs, then i technically doing nothing. i love doing nothing.
but everyday i have to give status on standup that what i am working upon and nothing is a suspicious answer :/9
Would anyone willing to give my new web app a test run email me at email@example.com
nothing in it for you but a "thanks" and the warm glow of finding all my mistakes I'm afraid.28
New job, new city, my job is very good & coworkers as well, but since I'm an introvert I'm not good at making new friends, I'm not socializing other than talking to my colleagues at during office hours. After office I come at my flat and do nothing wish I was good enough to have friend. Or some girl to hangout with its so lonely during weekends.3
Spaghetti codes makes a person feel frustrated, non-productive even slightly depressed, and even do refractoring takes time of production and slows things down in the short term there's nothing like that "new feeling " after you successfully re-organize and re-structure a project.
The skies seem more blue the motivation re-appears and new ideas make the project feel worth it of your time again
Test A succeeds when run solo. Test A fails when run in conjunction with Test B. Obviously, some kind of messy state that isn't isolated per test.
I realize what it is, so I add a new feature to address it.
Test still fails, it had nothing to do with that.
I finally realize what it was. One liner fix.
Yay for a new (useless?) feature that isn't getting backed out.
So... At this time we think that everything is already invented...
And I keep making new stuff...
New Idea, mini vacuum cleaner... only found one design online and was so badly done... So I made mine.
Happens all the time... Search, nothing I like, do it myself. And worst, I'm not even good at CAD programs lol.
Any Ideas for tools to make?4
Working on a project.
New gradle update comes out.
Updates his gradle.
Nothing works anymore!
Moral of the story.
This is why you should mind your own business.
The double-edged sword of teamwork. I'm an indie Game dev, so I have no choice but to work with others of completely different fields. I enjoy it and I get a lot of motivation seeing things done and learning many new disciplines, but team projects have so many downsides when you have to handle everything from programming to cinematography that someone else was meant to do.
My final team uni project I even had to do our music composing cause our sound effects guy did almost nothing in 6 months (he wrote 6 midi notes in 2 weeks at one point).
I ran my PHP script file in Firefox, only to be greeted by everything else but my webpage. I scanned through the errors and looked them up on Google. As I was only restricted to a basic text editor, I had no choice but to prepare myself to look through hundreds of lines of code spanning across different files in my project.
Minutes passed, found nothing. An hour has passed, and I can feel my brain power fading away into oblivion, but I still found nothing. I took a stab in the dark and made a few changes in the code, hoping that it'd solve the problem, only to be slapped with a big fat 'nope' in the browser. I lost all hope for the day and decided to give it a rest and come back tomorrow to try again.
New day, new me, fresh new energy to tackle the code! But after one failed attempt at debugging and I was back to the same state as yesterday.
But... at the corner of my eye, something at the end of a line caught my attention. I moved my cursor to that position, pressed the key on top of my pinky finger down, saved the file, and ran the script. It worked.
Who knew how problematic a single missing semicolon could be :34
So yesterday, I was testing some new features that I just implemented in this project at my internship. The thing did not work.
Today, I came in, literally changed nothing, opened up the test again, and now the features work perfectly fine.
I don't know how to feel about this. Veteran programmers, please give me some advice.1
Decided to search some new music for my favourite playlist
End of the day, pain in ears, nothing worthy found
And I realized that you never can find dope songs by yourself either they won't be offered by recommendations. Discovering them is a fucking random magic.
At such moments I think it's easier to drop any fucking thought about music and entirely forget about it existence
but I can't16
How do we expect the new generation of programmers to learn anything, when nowadays the answer to any programming question is to use a library? Without knowing what the library itself actually does, the programmer learns nothing. Even small things that could be done within a single file, are turned into clunky libraries. Am I missing something crucial?5
There is nothing more beautiful than having to embed legacy shit into an new website because the customer is a cheap arse and doesn't want to budget the whole pissing redesign package of his website.
I hope you choke on the next meal your stinky gullet has to swallow!1
Me: What's this new icon in the app?
* Long press on the icon *
Me: Huh. Ok. I will press it and see what it does.
* Presses it *
You have successfully done what you did not want to do. Congratulations!
WTF! Just tell me what it does when I long press it.1
And here I am again, reading test cases that basically boil down to:
$testCase->foo = "bar";
$testCase2->foo = null;
Why would anyone feel the need to write these kind of tests? They don't do anything. If I set up my mock a certain way, of course I will have that data, esp. if the unit under test only applies the data AS IS. (Funily enough through another component that already has the relevant dummy tests in place making these tests extra redundant and obsolete.)
You would think that one test case with dummy data suffices, yet no, there are like 30 examples that lie to you about apparent business logic cases, yet in the end the way you set up the mock decides what you will or won't get.
What's the point?8
Microsoft has sunk to a new low.
I opened a command window to check if there was an existing python install on the path. It reported nothing back. Zero errors. A second or 2 later it opened up the Microsoft Store so I can find this missing app.
The one last sacred thing was the command line, and you violated it.
FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!4
I started coding by playing really bad video games. After being suckered into using what allowance I had, I started hacking them to make them better. This led to hacking up MySpace... (ha) That led to actually trying out new languages and eventually unity3d/c# to learn proper coding techniques. I regret nothing!
Not been on devRant for over 2 years after joining a new company. Still got nothing to rant about. But at least I'm back, right?2
Seems kinda retarded but it should be trivial to reference a ListBox in a SelectionChanged event doing something like SomeListBox.Items[someIndex] = new TextBox()
in order to replace a simple textblock element with a textbox element that accepts input (replace-in-place), but it's proven to be the most long, aggravating series of unnecessary convoluted bullshit I have encountered so far.
And when I do something like ((ListBox)e.Source).SelectedItem = new TextBox(), nothing break per se but I get no god damn error or feedback, as if it worked, but nothing fucking changed.
I can only assume I'm fucking retarded or like most of the shit coming out of microsoft, WPF is a broken pile of bullshit.
I'd ask on here but every time I ask technical questions I never get any fucking answers. Like a ghost town around here sometimes..11
Nothing quite like having to almost wrestle with IT to get a new computer that has more than 8gb of RAM in 2020
. Next time, I fear that the option they will give me for a new one includes Windows XP and 2GB of RAM and they will call it a "stallion" of a laptop.6
Imagine java is an indigenous language to an island spoken by everyone there.
A non-native visits, and in order to understand them they need to decode their java into meanings and reapply those meanings to their own language.
More non-natives start visiting more and more often, and the javanese naively welcome them in.
The natives happily create trinkets and souvenirs for the tourists, and a market starts forming. The docks get busier every day.
Soon it appears that there are more non-natives on the island than natives, and their polity of origin starts to lay claim to their land.
Fights and legal altercations become common.
Some of the native javanese begin to modify their language to meet the colonists halfway, and some of the colonists begin to learn this new language.
They begin to understand each other more fundamentally and tensions fade.
Meanwhile, the more stoic javanese retain their claim to the island, and fight the pidgin "rebels".
The island splits into Java and Papua New Java. The populace of both claiming having nothing much to do with the other.
Nothing but fun and funerals for any new tourism.
It's so sad.
Let's Make Java Great Again.
Let's Make Papua New Java Great Again.
Let's build a wall.
As a POC I removed all client specifics from a project and made it reusable. Thousands of lines of code. In a day. From a project I knew nothing about in a language I previously used only in school. And it compiled and ran in the end.
Ripping out so much useless code felt great, possibly as good as creating something new, fresh, innocent. I improved on performance and maintenability and found some errors in the process.
After a successfull POC it was time to do it properly. That was a nightmare. A horror movie you want to see through. In the end I felt even better.5
I fucking despise making whatever website that needs to send emails.
The final user won't probably receive the emails bc of spam, the customer wont like this and blame me or the company I work for, but never actually PAY for an email service to send emails.
And almost nothing works with the old-ass domains here in Italy, but people will still use those old-as-fuck emails just because they can't make a new one on gmail or outlook.1
So I messed up xfce system, by deleting some super important files. So I moved to kde. I like it more, but it freezes sometimes, sometimes at uncomfortable times. Any help here? The install is 100% fresh, nothing new installed3
So I'm pretty new to PHP after coming off 5 years worth of Java. So far I've used nothing but standard, out-of-the-box code. Anyone got any recommendations for frameworks or nice tools I could look at? I'd especially like something that could make forms and database interactions easier (my software is a lot of data capturing and reporting)12
This awesome moment when you‘re late into your thesis, find a possible improvement that would require new measurements, but then find out that this improvement can‘t be done with your constraints and there is nothing to do❤️1
Honestly, nothing. I'm just a human. I know I will fail multiple times, over and over. I allow myself to do that, learning and taking precautions for each new failure.
am I the Only Developer that REALLY HAS BAD TIME MANAGEMENT Skills over long projects like come the fek on brain.
look below only if interested has nothing to do with rant
oh yeah and by the way got a new project out3
When Email and Time-sheet is everything in the workplace....
They literally don't care about your work or about successfully deploying project, if you don't have it in timesheet then you did nothing.
They want me to work on totally new things and expect to get the results within week and when I mention this is new and I can't even give estimates, they want that to be in an Email. Like WTF!! you even know this is fucking new thing that only I'm working on, there's no one to help me.
And I'm here learning, studying so I can solve these out of scope requirements with best practices.
And in the meantime they also want me to work one few other things .__.1
> punch into work
> get comfy on the desk
> push previous commits along with new commit
> GitLab showed only the last commit i.e. today's
> check logs, found nothing
> now, waiting for coffee while figuring out why it is bothering me2
Nothing prepares you for Windows deciding your program as a virus for all your thousands of users and having no idea why.
It wasn’t virus related at all. It needed a new signing with an updated certificate. Did the error say anything like that? Hell no .
I have another issue 😬 with one of my Ubuntu laptops. The wifi chip somehow has connection issues. It nearly has no signal. I have to be beside the router to get a connection.
I changed the chip to a new Qualcomm Atheros chip already, but there was no change. I tried a few "speed up your WiFi connection" blog posts. But that also changed nothing.
Do you guys have any advice? :-\27
Have you ever been in the situation "I need to leave this job, my health demands it... But I can't, I need money" ?
What did you do? 😢
I would freelance but I have no idea where to start to find clients...
I would also stop for a while to make a proper portfolio or GitHub profile, since I always worked for companies with code discretion, I have nothing to show to new employers 😕2
Okay, so we've learned nothing new.
A degree is a useless waste of time and nobody cares about it.
Said by someone who's currently in school, and will learn the basics of the stuff I'm currently doing day to day in about roughly three years.2
Rant two of monday!!
We are in a new office. Bigger than the previous one. Fine.
We are away from sales team (check previous rants about sales team and their hero #boringman)
Cool. We still hear him and them but it's better.
Boring man stops by tech team table to ask how many lines of code we have done today or in the last <period of time>.
We have solved nothing.
Boring man is veeeeery bored.
Just sent a series of design visuals for the client to look at for his new website, expecting some feedback. A few hours later he sends an email saying, "my main competitor" with a web link and nothing else. What the fuck am i supposed to do with that? Id already studied all his competitors prior to commencing the design visuals, how am i supposed to respond without being condescending?3
I gues devrant android app got an update recently [last week?]? Notifications suddenly started to work. Yayy!
But in-app notifications broke. More often than not either tab in notifs [all, ++, comments, etc.] loads nothing and there's no way to re-fetch data manually. If _all_ breaks I have to browse each category manually to see what's new.
Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?
Galaxy s7 edge, stock everything.
P.S. I rarely get to rant about devrant :)
I was just watching a livestream YouTube video hoping to learn something new but the streamer clearly has no idea what he is doing. He was just looking things up all the time and failing miserable to find anything useful for the program he's trying to build.
Funny thing, the last statement he said was: "I give up, bye!" and that's it!! 1.5 hours of my life wasted for nothing.
Currently writing a long-ass new issue to the Docker/CLI repository, to tell them that their online documentation for the manifests is absolute garbage. I mean, a documentation is supposed to tell you how to run commands, not something like "Yeah you try it and maybe it'll work. No it's not the good format, you dumb fuck. Nice, bro, but if you check what changed... That's right, nothing changed. At all. For no reason. Keep trying, it's fun!"
For the past days i’ve mentioned that i need a backender to create me an extra page in the solution. No attention was given. Backenders where too busy. Today we started a new sprint and i got asked what i’m gonna do.
I told them for the fourth time, i need backend work done to continue.
I got pissed.
Backender got pissed.
And in the end nothing will be done for this cause.
Fuck my life.
Fuck these people.1
So...we just sent a design proposal for a new feature to our biggest client. Their response? -Hmmm, let s drop this feature for now...OMG have you guys seen the new airbnb design for ios, like it s soooo cooool, we want that, redesign the whole app like this. - Yeah sure, except our app has nothing in common with theirs...Isn't it great when clients make decisions like this based on checking a new app version in the toilet real quick? 😝 Needless to say, we're not redesigning...
So... Got upgraded to android 8.1
First impression... Dark theme ? (my dark background may help),
Everything got darker.
Second, folders are ugly as fuck (rounded, cutting half the icons) .
And third : fuck shit got fast.
If I tought my phone had no lag I was wrong... Now it starts apps instantly (plus the app launch time) it also got preetyer, looks like a hologram again the background.
Release info: https://xda-developers.com/android-...
Checking new features now but nothing really important1
First job out of school was for a company that did Cold Storage as its main gig and custom dev as a minor form of additional income. I worked with one of the owners and another guy as a three man agile team.
Except, the owner didn't trust source control, so we didn't use it. There was no organization, instead the owner would come in every morning, and assign something new. Randomly, the owner would come in and pitch a fit that something he had assigned 3 weeks before, immediately pulled us off of the next day, and ordered us to DELETE the code for, wasn't done. He treated the other guy on our team as his personal whipping boy. He would sometimes go 2 or 3 days without saying a word to me. No project to work, nothing. I would sit there all day with nothing to do. I stayed there a year.
There are just those days where nothing seems to work. I am now 8 hours on an issue that was estimated for 3 hours and new issues pop up every time where its not even my fault. In one instance, I get the correct value back, the next time with exactly the same parameters I get a COMPLETELY different Value back which keeps crashing my code. Who coded this thing that it is so inconsistent. Starts to get REALLY annoying. ._.1
A new year, a new job.
After a years hard graft learning front end code I finally landed my first dev job!
Even though the job is a while away, there will be nothing stopping me getting there and learning all I can in this industry.
Sometimes I genuinely wonder what the thought process of some people is...
git checks out feature-X branch
git creates new branch off of it to work on something that has absolutely nothing to do with feature X
then opens a PR back into feature-X
Me: this has nothing to do with feature X.. i think you meant to branch off of develop and PR back into develop, no?
Them: no it was intentional .. feature-X will eventually end up on develop so I thought we'd get both features on develop.
I'm not even mad and this isn't a rant, I'm just really confused 🙂4
Sooo, a follow up...
I talked to HoIT last week and he could see the issues, both on how my boss manages his team, but also a clear lack of resources.
He promised that I would be promoted in a some months.
Today, we had a talk with a broader audience. And everyone agrees that the current situation is unsustainable and we should do something now.
I expected HoIT to present his vision, with me as the lead of a new team. But... Nothing...
I tried to suggest the model, using his own words so he might remember.
Sooo anybody in need of a Team Lead/Architect around Frankfurt, Germany??
Been working on an Android app for some time. Silly me too lazy to use VCS. Anyway, one day android studio just could not build my project and errors that should not be errors popped up everywhere and nothing I did fixed the problem. Somehow my project got corrupted. 3 hours later of googling and trying to recover my project I had to resort to creating a new project and manually port the old files in one by one :( but all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK ANDROID STUDIO3
Ok... Can someone explain me this?
Happen a few weeks ago.
My pc would crach on any 3D program or game.
Did some tests, was the graphic card.
Send it to repair (amd, Asus made)
Placed my old Nvidia, installed drivers all good.
My new card came, nothing repaired, nothing found, passed all stress tests.
Placed the card back ok, no OS.
Bios detects both ssds but don't start (windows 10.... Ya tryed Linux but doesn't work for my main past time in pc, Arma 3).
Loaded the USB with the windows instalation, used command line drive C is completely empty but has 160gb used.
Ended ip formating.
GC works perfectly.
So... Wtf happen?12
Starting my first tech internship as an IT intern at my dads work. I’m super excited even though I know nothing about IT lol. I’m excited to learn and be exposed to some new stuff tho2
Fuck MS, why couldn't you update the NuGet API URL when NuGet updated? The warning on nuget.org states,
"This package will only be available to download with SemVer 2.0.0 compatible NuGet clients, such as Visual Studio 2017 (version 15.3) and above or NuGet client 4.3.0 and above"
It says nothing about using the V3 endpoint, so if you''re like me and updated NuGet to 4.5 and still got nothing but
"NU1101: Unable to find package Foo.Bar. No packages exist with this id in source(s): https://www.nuget.org/api/v2/"
...then you'll be very confused until it strikes you that there might be a new API version. Even if MS doesn't want to deprecate the V2 API just yet, it would be awfully nice to just state on the frickin' site that not only do you need NuGet >= 4.3.x, but also the correct feed URL.
$_DEITY knows how many dev-hours have been lost to this shit.
Today I'm going to put in my two weeks because of my move and new job, really nervous, I hate this part even though I did nothing wrong lol.
There's nothing like that feeling on your face...
When you get a new project...and you've been writing project requirements & scope docs for 20 hours...
As you somber towards bed...what is that tickle on my cheek? Oh. Just eye blood.
That's a morning-me problem.3
I love it!
So I want to understand an new library, to get rid of some functions that are expected to cause some trouble in our main product. Luckily someone did a great job on github, providing a programm that can do what I want in a slightly different, more complicated way. But it is good and we need it anyway.
But instead of understanding the things I wanted to learn, somehow my test programm just didnt work. It just didnt want to. I DID EVERYTHING THE SAME I ALWAYS DID. Without implementing anything new. And it didnt throw any error, debugging showed me what i already knew, BUT NOTHING HAPPEND.
Wasted the day, tried everything, learned nothing.
BTW its written in C, so my error is definitely some tiny dumb shit, that i was too stupid to see...
"I say that flat is the new black; that 2D is the new avant-garde; that a surface doesn’t have to be ashamed of being a surface. Technology users of the world, unite: you have nothing to lose but your bas-relief buttons. Let us march forwards together, spurning chrome, into a cleaner, lighter future." - Steven Poole2
Nothing beats when you move into a new team and your old team message you all the time for those little things they could Google... Did people really think I was that smart??? Maybe some people are better at googling than others...
Faith in humanity restored (for now anyway)
I forgot my jacket containing everything I had with me (money, id, credit cards, etc) in a cafeteria this noon. Now, at 6pm I remembered and stormed over with vivid pictures about the hassle of replacing the cards, getting a new Id, and trying to survive on no money during that time, just to find it as I have left it. Nothing missing! People seem to be nice sometimes.
Well, it wouldn't have hurt anyone,if they'd put some money in it for starters.5
Fucked up my old phone (picked up an overheating phone with super cold hands and the screen exploded) and my new one is way faster despite having almost exactly 1/2 the CPU power (8-core 2.13GHz in old, 4-core 1.4GHz in this one) due entirely to the Android build not being dogshit. They both only have 2GB of RAM, so i'm still sitting at like 300MB of free RAM with nothing running, but it's a start.7
You know it's here. You know it's coming. You wait patiently in hopes you don't have to update. But it will happen. One moment you look away from your phone, the alarm goes off, and now, there's nothing you can still do.
WELCOME TO IOS 10.3 BETA 4 HOPE YOU LIKE THE NEW EMOJIS!!2
man f*** ecom jobs. it's boring, the same shit all day. Nothing new. All they care about is how money they can work out of you.
Talk about giving me a headache..
Mmh k, so i want to move my current domain to cloudflare.
Go to current provider, their site report a previous provider has the record but that provider says they have nothing left.
Contact current provider and they tell me to contact cloudflare, cloudflare tells me to resolve that issue with my previous provider....
Starting to feel like just dropping it and getting a new ...
Somewhat new to Linux and tried to install it on my usb so I don't affect my computer. Installed and an error saying could not install bootloader and booting from that usb just shows a blinking cursor and trying to boot back to Windows shows grub rescue as it doesn't recognise something. Might have to experiment with changing from legacy BIOS to UEFI. But I just hope nothing has happened to my windows4
Writing my master thesis at my company, theoretical computer science, doing fancy shit with scheduling rules. but am just a "working student".
Realized, that all my project member, also other colleagues, standing right behind me at a Whiteboard, discussing that part of the project I am the expert of, as this exactly is my topic.
They were asking very new team member about my topic, but they know nothing, just guessing how this could be.
Nobody did even think about asking me.
So I continued working on what they thought "nobody has knowledge about at all".
University : you know with remote working no-body know if you really work at home. For that reason you cannot remote work on shiti snowy dangerous day.
Covid-19 joined the conversation
University : look how its fun to remote working ! Is the new technology of the century... Now everybody in quarantine can work at home and the business lose nothing.
Me: yeah you bet mother fucker
University: don't take it like that is a gift.
Me: i will take it like a gift if you give it to me before the apocalypse fucker ...2
So. I began college this year. I will be majoring in Computer Science. There first thing as a new student I did was signed up for the Computer Science Club and excited for the new adventure I asked, "What are we going to do?
President: "Nothing. We don't have any programmers or budget. But you can do whatever you want."
I don't know what I felt: maybe lost? a little dead inside?
What a disappointment.6
3 or 4 weeks ago me and management had a talk about new features in our product...
So we implemented the new features and then we released the app...
Today I got a really long bug report that summarizes into the following sentence -> BUG: Everything works exactly as we talked 4 weeks ago.... And apparently that is bad 😣
Like c'mon dudes if now it is a bug then why the fuck I needed to code that feature?! Time totally wasted for nothing! 😤
Fix My Lighthouse!1
How can people stand this bitten apple? With this mojave update I now feel in the most unfriendly desert for developers.
Not only did your update render all my VM's unusable, but the new AppStore seems a joke. This new icon there if a piece is downloading or installing or whatever. I cannot tell what it should tell me. That an alien took a crap on my display? There's no percentage, nothing indicating what's actually happening. Is this your understanding of user experience through obscurity? - shunning the user from any useful information, hiding everything behind some nice looking vapourware?4
So I decided to buy a new graphic card to fully enjoy my PC games. Once I set it up it sounded like the fans were working too hard,so I decided to open the computer case and clean inside.
And now it doesn't boot anymore. Nothing at all on the screens.
I don't know what I did, only the fans are turning when I press the power button. Even the led on the front of the case is not blinking anymore.
I have enjoyed my new graphic card during one hour all in all. Frustration is high.9
nothing is better than starting the new year while working on a project,
first git commit of the year 2018
happy new year ranters1
Has anyone ever used Endless OS before?
I know it's a Linux based OS but other than than I know next to nothing about. I got a new laptop coming in that has it preinstalled.
I'm wondering whether it's worth trying it out for a while or just wiping it.
@linuxxx maybe you have any knowledge worth sharing?6
So after my webhost told me the reason my ssl was broke was due to an issue I had no control over i threw a fit any 12 year old would be proud of (im 22) bought a new domain name and ssl certificate. Created an account on digital ocean for the cheapest tier and got to work learning about nginx (just to learn my new thing for the day nothing against apache) real quick
Few hours later https://jessiejfoley.dev is working
No content yet. But no server side errors I cant fucking fix through a limited dashboard
Don't know if that counts as petty but I feel better now7
It finally happened. They just kept pushing, and pushing, and pushing. Asking for more and more features in an app that was a hard-coded demo from the beginning. Well it's all coming down now.
That database that was added in, missing half the API.
New features, broken.
Old features, broken.
Drivers, need updating.
I tried to tell them, I really did. That maybe we should stop asking the client what they want, and instead sell them what we have. Well, now we have nothing.3
So I just failed my maths exam.
Nothing more to say except all other courses have way way better grades than my course.
So my teach's got two courses and both of them massively fucked up, course average (both) 4.5-5.6 (d- - f).
All other courses are just Soo way better that I just can't believe that fault is only on the student side here.
And to top it off, this scenario is not new at all.
Had the same shit with our courses failing unlike the others anothet time too.
FUCK YOU FR. NIELEN4
Got a weird bug today...
A new feature I just implemented works but outputs nothing.
So I start printing its inputs early in the code, fine no problem here. Then I print out the supposed results a little bit later, fine too. But now the full program work perfectly.
I find out that if I remove one of those two prints then suddenly my function start outputing empty arrays! WTF?
I think I find a quantum bug, you can observe the bug or the internal values but not both!5
I have a couple of small ones, but one that stands out is actually fairly recent.
It was an independent project, more for practice than anything, but it involved fetching daily horoscopes from an RSS feed and showing it to the user upon request. I first just made it as a command line program, using some new modules I hadn't used before, and seeing everything work smoothly and neatly printed out made me super excited.
Not too long ago I even made a proper GUI for it using Tkinter, which also works nicely. :) Nothing so far has beaten that first excitement upon finishing the command line one, though.
That feeling when you go back to a project you haven’t touched in months, upgrade one of the dependencies to a new major version (come on how many breaking changes will actually affect this tiny project), and find nothing is compiling because the library maintainers renamed everything and introduced a lot of breaking changes that are actually relevant2
So I got hired by a new client as a front end dev and I’m supposed to start a project from scratch. I asked (since it’s a new project) if it makes a difference if I use Angular or React and he said “technically not” but then in the following days he said he wants to use Angular with some lame reasons that’s it’s a full framework etc etc. I used both but obviously prefer React because well I’m not an idiot. Come to figure out he knows nothing about React but has used Angular before. What a FUCKING surprise 👏 👏 👏
Why can’t people decide objectively instead of just sticking with what they know.
Today was a little better, we discussed a bit about design with client and agreed to add two new screens inside application. Need to organize some backend logic for this.
Nothing difficult but there might be some problems as we progress trough this data during first implementation.
Don’t have a graphic designer in a team anymore so lots of freedom and mistakes.
Our client changed the project 3 times in 2 days!
Sometimes I wish to have a rocket launcher!
"Now we need to add a new rule in the mechanics... "
Thank you! We spent 2 days creating this shit for nothing.
Aaaargh fuck youuu!2
"Designers tend to overvalue differentiation and originality. We are taught this in design school. The best solutions are created ex nihilo, break new ground, resemble nothing else in the world. Everyone wants to stand out, or else what’s the point? But this isn’t true. Most people don’t want to stand out. They want to fit in. More precisely, they want to fit in with the people they like, or want to be like." - Michael Bierut
Nothing makes me - on a regular basis - doubt myself more than when I'm reading documentation and finding the arguments and variables I need, but not for the life of me finding the syntax or which context I should be using it in.
It's as if it's assumed to be common knowledge and I dread being "that guy" to ask someone about it. I feel like such a chump opening a new tab and googling for examples.
Had to send my new, shit Nokia phone in for repair as the forced update fucked half the built-in apps. My dad tells me "use my old phone for now, it's terrible." He hands me an LG V20.
Nokia 3.1 A vs LG V20
RAM: 264MB free w/ nothing running vs 1342MB free w/ nothing running
CPU: 4-core 1.7GHz vs 4-core 2.1GHz
Onboard storage: 16GB/5GB user-accessible vs 64GB/51.5GB user-accessible
Battery life: 7 hours under load to 4 hours under load
I don't think he's getting this back.
(He doesn't use it as "it's so slow" but like... with proper care, the only issue is that switching apps sometimes doesn't fully clean the LCD of the old app and it burns in really fast, but minor annoyances for a WAY better device?)8
Digital transformation is pain in the ass, my customer migrated project management from self hosted jira to atlassian cloud.
I am finally able to login to this new amazing jira that looks completely different but still nothing is optimized to laptop screen so looks crap as before.
My issues are now assigned to not existing user.
At least I remember how to use basic JQL and reassign issues to me.
I feel bad to other team members.
Great waste of time.7
I have a weird problem ...
There’s an existing swift app, with Apple sign in implemented and working.
When I took over I had to revoke app certificates and create new one. Since then the Apple sign in stopped working.
I’ve tried clean rebuild etc , even tried renewing old profiles with the new cert but nothing is working.
When u do Apple sign in it says “sign up not completed” with no error msg.
Old dev says it happened last time when cert/profile was changed but fixed on proper rebuild. Not fixing for me.
Anybody else faced this?5
I was signing up for a new account on Magic. I wasn't paying attention so I accidentally didn't change my date of birth, so it didn't let me create an account because they thought I was just born today. I changed that field but nope, it remembered I had told it I was 1 day old and it didn't let me change my mind. Delete cookies, nothing. Reload page, nothing. So I go into Postman and re-create the request and BOOM! I even got an access token for their API. This is why I love being a dev.
Nothing to do. No fucking work here and im not hired for BE. Fucking BE doesn't do shit and im here like ZzZzZz. New job interview next thursday. Screw this shit!2
I would end up on top of any other trend thing needed by humanity.
- building better AI's, building better robots
- neural networking
- quantum computing
- robot dating service
- artificial life
- holodeck design and construction
- free energy (any kind)
- running a private space shipyard
- research into new and unknown technology
And last, if nothing works, I would open up a deli on Mars. The robots would make the food anyway, I would probably only program the menu and fix them when they malfunction.
What do you think about the new Youtube layout?
New Youtube, new bugs.
I reported a bug when it was opt-in and guess what, it's still here: in subscription feed's listed view, scrolling is laggy after loading more items with stepless scrolling (e.g. Chrome w/ touchpad). So many unnecessary animations.
It's just really frustrating when you try to info large company about a bug and they do nothing. The previous ones are also still there...
I guess it's time to reboot my Youtube Data API client project, which I started just for this reason.3
Ok why the FUCK is my angular app creating a new service when I reroute and throwing away all the state I just carefully put in there?! Does providedIn root mean nothing to you?!
I gave up and just used a global variable3
I'm about to set up a new pc (not for me, in our bureau, it'll do nothing special at all) elementary os or Ubuntu 17.10?
I'd do an update to Ubuntu 18.04 when its published, but I don't wanna use the "old" version with unity as of now...
Or elementary is because it's easy to use?
I'm currently working in a theater, so it should be usable for "non-techies".4
6 weeks of doing nothing except dealing with nightmares from the past in my mind I think I left all that crap behind and I am ready to jump back.
I don’t feel much anger and disappointment anymore, even some excitement for new crap to come by on my desk.
I started to write some code and practice puzzles for getting some decent job or project (again)
Puzzles are usually not a problem but I fail with HR.
When they’re asking me stupid questions I answer with stupid answers to piss them off.
But now time to get some money so I’d try to be gentle.
Starting a job. No computer for the whole week with no prospects for when will I even get one.
Doing nothing, still getting paid, but starting slowly and surely to loose my mind...
I NEED TO SEE Code in order to live.1
Project manager, knows nothing/little about the project... Always sends new features to be added only to be removed 1hr later 😣😣, you have experienced nothing until you work under 1
So friday night, kids and wife asleep, no alarm for tomorrow, spotify works (VPN does what it should do), tasks went well this week (nothing is burning, nobody is pissed off), good time to learn something new... any suggestions? PARTY HARD!!!3
New device: "iPhone air"
There is nothing other than air. Yeah, you just assume that there is an iPhone. Or you don't, it's completely up to you.
we are ~Apple~
There are times when I'm too tired I forget what I changed in the code so I write just "regular" in the title and nothing at all in the description even though it's very obvious i refactored large chunks of the code and added new ones... Regular riight
Ok fuck everything, I will not work today nothing is fucking working, the feature that I implemented easily in the last app, is harder to implement now because of the new version of the library. Even the old and same version of the library I used in the previous app is not compatible with the new version of the framework. What a freaking horrible development experience we are getting into. Developing should become easier not harder mother fucking library developers, should I write my own library now? fuck you, and fml too.
What programming language do you guys recommend to learn?
Currently, I know Java, PHP and JS but I want to try something else...
I was thinking maybe C, C++ or C#, opinions? Also, many people seem to praise Python as the new god of programming languages which will solve all of our problems, but until now I ran into nothing but problems really with literally every python-application I have used (mostly incompatibility between certain packages which actually were the required version, I found it very annoying to fix every time). Is that just me or does that happen more often?16
I've been on a new project since last week.
After 3 days of knowledge transmission and really nothing else, the PM walked in and ask me when the project will be finished...
Really?! Jumping in a totally new project, with tools and functionals aspect I've never seen and then this.
:thumbs up: everything gonna be ok
My workflow pet peeve is the length of time my PRs get merged into master
I have to create new features, but sometimes I have to work off current HEAD, which is technically old since I need stuff off a new branch.
Ideally we merge into master, then create a new branch off that. It's nothing major and there's loads of ways to get around it, but I'm used to the flow!
So I’m trying to implement a new feature on a web platform.
Getting constantly a new error which is good cause that means that slowly I am progressing.
And then I refresh click the button to test and then the whole top bar of the app moves back and forth like its dancing macarena for like 5 seconds. I was legit confused what just happened that. Tried to repeat it and figure out how is there animations in my code, but there’s nothing. Either I’m burned out or I’m going crazy.
There is nothing better than hopping into a new language people have told you would be hard, and discovering it's just like one you already know. :/1
Okay so I need some help. I need a new laptop which will hopefully last at least through my 4 years of school but I'm not sure which one to get. Currently I'm between the Acer swift 3 and the Dell xps 13. I was wondering if anybody could offer some insight on their experiences with either. All I'd really be using it for would be day to day stuff and programming nothing too crazy5
We were redesigning our template apps into a single one and I repeatedly said to our pm "don't get someone to merge all the old backends into a single api get them to build it up with the new front end"
They ignored me now I have to spend goodness knows how long fixing it because the requirements for the new fe are completely different and it's all broken.
Not to mention it was rushed converted from js to typescript and nothing is typed.
Its going to be a fun Monday.4
this will take a while due to typescript but now i know nothing about web development and im learning one by one.
set aside the cringe because you will see a whole new person after a few months. bye :)2
Embedded programmer here, recently my job is nothing but android, web shit and webservices (no offense). i guess it's time to find a new job.
For Google coming up with a new OS is nothing more than producing a new brand of wine or perfume, Android, Chrome OS and now Andromeda? and what? also rumors for some freaking Fuchsia or whatever? really Google?
Since the new update I have many issues with loading oft rants.
When I click on a rant, the devRant Logo Smiley Shows up for several seconds, than it Just disappears. And then nothing Happens.
Have to Go Back again, and Back again and sometimes also Close the App before the rant is loading again.
Is it only me?7
Nothing can take the joy out of programming more, than having to redo and implement new features in uncommented legacy code, that takes 2x as long to understand than to actually code.
- Gonna be a long ass week.
I'm new here and I'm scared there is no "Night Mode", since I'm looking for that for minutes and i found nothing.4
So finished 2 weeks project for co-worker. Now she can register cargo waybills to database and not to excel(I have nothing against it, but to have centralised way to keep data is better practice). Anyway project was done with Cpp, wxwidgets(first time trying GUI in my project), postgressql. Now I can see a lot of things I can rework, fix or add something new. I guess you can't finish fully anything.
from the students point of view: my it-security module last semester which had nothing new for me because i was thrown into an internship with no work prepared and had to teach myself for the whole semester in it-security which has shown me that said path was the right one for me :)
