Search - "weekend work"
Boss emailed me that I need to work again on Saturday and Sunday.
I replied with a resignation letter.25
Sister called me on my way to work (she never calls me, we communicate through a family signal) to ask if I wanted to come over for dinner in the weekend because a new guy she knows will be there and also my parents.
Me: hmm idk I've got a lot to do in the weekend....
Sis: he saw my laptop by the way, he was highly impressed that its dual booted and asked how on earth I know about Linux! Then I told him about you and what you do and now he really wants to meet you!
Me: what time would I have to be there?
I hate how that stuff can make me change my mind just like this 😅25
Just my shaved pussy in the middle of the work weekend.
(At this point I really hope I'm attaching the right image)31
USER: I can't see any data in the page...!
ME: ok, I'll do a check
ME: API calls get no data back. Boss, did you change anything and put it in production?
BOSS: Absolutely not, I just modified the name of what was the "Family" parameter in "Type".
ME: Seems legit. Totally agree. I'm going to lunch. Can you check in the meanwhile why calling the API with "Family" does return nothing? Thanks.3
I may have received the best email ever all these years (and a year as a Lead).
A client acted as a boss telling me to "work this weekend to finish the project a little earlier"
Enjoying my cereal so far..15
Overheard a conversation in class today: This dude was talking about how "Linux was terrible and worthless" because he'd spent a few hours trying to install Ubuntu on his laptop over the weekend and couldn't get it to work. I don't know how to tell him Linux isn't the problem here.14
Working at home this Saturday. My wife made coffee, some toasted bread and is leaving me quiet in my corner. She's the best!11
Please tell me I'm not the only lazy bastard that spends all week dreaming of the weekend to finally work on some personal projects and when it finally arrives as soon as I launch the IDE my motivation goes down to -100 and I spend the rest of the day watching random videos on YouTube as always dreaming of the next weekend to finish that awesome idea I had 5 years ago...15
Experiencing it right now.
As I type this I am sat in hospital having lost power to my hands over the weekend.
I work a day job, I have my own startup that I’m working on and I’m also freelancing on another startup.
Just been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. It sucks. My hands feel about as a strong as a particularly weak 4 year old girl.14
Hello devRanters! A new update on the privacy website as I've had time to work on that last weekend.
For the picture: everything except for the images (although the URI's are in the database) is coming directly from the DB!
Also got a thingy working which can show one app on a single page including it's pro's/cons etc that you see on the main page but also (still have to write that part though and no screenshots yet as I've only done the backend!) sources (links to proof etc), a description and a guide on how to use that app/service!
I'm finally getting somewhere :)29
Mgmt: We will need you to work on Saturday
Me: I'm afraid I can't, I have plans that cannot be rescheduled.
Mgmt: Then please call your coleague out of vacation. Treat this as super urgent.
Me: I do not feel comfortable calling him out as, as you know, he is on leave (family emergencies) and it is a weekend. I do not think it would be ethical to do so either.
Mgmt: *crickets chirping in my mailbox*
Me: *Updating my LinkedIn*7
Using Mac at work and Ubuntu at home.
Every feckin weekend I spend 10min relearning keyboard shortcuts before I can get productive because all of a sudden cmd+c doesn't copy but instead deletes random shit.
The madness of life.10
Who else is coming down from a weekend personal projects high after realizing the work week starts tomorrow?
You can't imagine how many lines of pure and utter horseshit, seemingly written in PHP, I had to dig through this whole weekend. (relating to my 2 previous rants)
How is it even possible to write code this unbelievably ugly?
- includes within loops
- included files use variables from parent files
- start- and endtags separated to different files
- SQL queries generated by string concatenation, no safety measures at all (injection)
- repeating DB calls within loops
- multiple directories with the same code (~40 files), only different by ~8 lines, copied
- a mixture of <?php echo ... ?> and <?= ... ?>
- a LOT of array accesses and other stuff prefixed with "@" (suppress error messages)
- passwords in cleartext
- random non-RESTful page changes with a mixture of POST and GET
- GET parameters not URL-encoded
My boss told me it took this guy weeks and weeks of coding to write this tool (he's an "experienced dev", of course WITHOUT Git).
It took me only 20 hours and about 700 lines of code.
I must confess, since this task, I don't hate PHP anymore, I just simply hate this dev to death.
Addendum: It's Monday, 5:30am. Good night. 😉13
starts weekend with full mood to work on personal project.
End up watching youtube videos all day long.1
Don't work late/during the weekend because someone else committed to an impossible deadline. Trust me. It's not worth it.3
Every. Commit. My Boss. Makes. Is 'cp'. I come in this morning to find 1882 insertions, 143 deletions to master, and this is the commit log for the entire weekend.
How. In the fuck. Am I supposed to effectively work on this project. If I can't keep up with changes.10
Some days ago I finished "Ray tracing in a weekend" (Peter Shirley) and I'm learning a lot :D
In the new year I will start with "Ray tracing the next week", but there are still some things I want to tackle before that (improve code quality, optimize... it's my first project that is bigger than a codeforces problem solution, a part from the projects at work).
Any sources of wisdom and recommendations are welcome!!9
I didn't know any one of them, we just meet at the TADHack last week end. Because my team members apologies at the last moment, I joined one of them who forgot his laptop. The third came after five minutes asking "can I join"?
We established a team from three different backgrounds, and started the work. Each one built what he know, and we integrated all of it together.
Luckily, we won.... I enjoyed these weekend...5
Fuck today. Just fucking fuck today. Every fucking thing is going wrong.
A router reset might work for the Internet part buuuuuut there's 4 rooms on this router so i can't really do that until tonight - the end of the fucking weekend, exactly!9
I'm unbelievably angry. So please bear with my venting.
QA guy and I are stuck working the entire weekend. A few months ago our company decided to promote an account manager to a Product/Project management role with 0 experience and offering them 0 training. They have no experience working with devs and have been making our lives hell. I work easily 50-60hrs per week and they still budget projects according to 40hrs/week meaning they're stealing my time not to mention they're incorrectly setting the client's and company's expectations.
They now have complete control over roadmaps, client communications (this wouldn't normally be bad except that they're having technical discussions with the client with 0 tech experience), timelines, etc. and since their experience was in account management they are now working with devs but making decisions that exclusively put the client first at all costs, even if it means everyone else has to work weekends while they go on vacation!!!!
I've approached them several times to offer help on budgeting time or to propose that we do a Q4 planning so that we can improve the product instead of stay in a shitty position as we are. I'm responded with "You deal with what's in front of you. It's my job to look at the bigger picture."
They mismanaged a $500,000 project and our CEO got wind of it because the client called him while he was travelling. He in turn gave shit to our Directors who in turn chewed the QA guy and I out. "You need to be more meticulous when deploying. How could you let this happen? We're eating shit because of this. You need to work over the weekend to make up for this", etc.
I'm now directly responsible for having delivered something that wasn't up to standards even though I was already putting in the overtime.
This is honestly fucking ridiculous. How can I be blamed when I'm truly doing the best I can and putting as many hours as I can while edging toward burnout.
I love what I do but I hate feeling extremely pressured to turn down friends and family like this. Maybe I'm just too easy going and need to say no more. Who fucking knows. I know that I'm angry with the company right now.
What do you all think? If you read this rant, thank you. Feels better to write it out.13
Friend: I just love the adrenaline rush caused by bungee jumping
Me: I just love the adrenaline rush caused by deploying untested code to production server on a Friday night5
3 years going to the same coffee shop to work on various projects every weekend. Finally someone comes up to me for a chat about programming!!!8
Surprise surprise, that unrealistic deadline you set even when the engineering team told you that it wasn't going to work has backfired! Maybe you wouldn't be so stressed if you learnt to listen? It's a pretty basic skill, or at least I thought so.
Oh and when you say "we have two options, stay late or work weekends" you have a critical bug in your conditional. Your missing option 3, go the fuck home. Time to enjoy my weekend with friends and family.4
My friend introduced me to rick&morty.
My weekend mostly consisted of me getting schwifty®.
Instead of getting work done.4
Everyday single day I have to give time for family, personal work and office. Prioritized in that order.
End result : low quality family time, pending personal projects. Office work - well that one is OK I guess cos the time is dedicated.
Solution : made a deal with wife - one day on weekend dedicated for family (she can plan anything she wants) and I will not do any work. Other day dedicated for my personal work/time (no family plans).
Divide weekdays similarly. On family days I checkout at sharp 4pm from office and come home straight spend the rest of the day with family alone. On the other days I stay either at office or go somewhere to work or hangout with dev buddies.
End result: Quality family time. No interruption when coding (a dev would understand the importance of this). More productive work.6
when you wake up saturday noon just to see your phone having 10 missed calls from the same unrecognized number, dial back and find it to be a mad client,
complaining about some graphic issues on a site you have nothing to do with.
checking the site; there is nothing wrong so you tell him to clear his browser cache.
he gets mad shouting a silly programmer shall not tell him what to do with his computer and its the site, not his browser.
i ask him if there is the same issue with another browser or computer..
he giggles a little then turn silent..
2mins or so later, he says: i'm gonna let your boss know about this then hangs up..2
Two days ago I decided to fully upgrade my linux system. Everything used to work normally, but after the upgrade the os always freezes on boot. Apparently it's because of the graphic card (nvidia) and even after installing the driver and trying so many things it still doesnt work. It's been two days trying to fix it and no luck yet. What a lucky weekend 😂6
When you learn your project will be launched Monday in an email sent to the whole company, just before the weekend...
I'm not even kidding. No one on our team was consulted if the app was ready or not.
There was no infrastructure in place to even deploy the app. Everything had to be done in a hurry over the weekend to deploy something half baked, thanks to that idiot project manager who told his boss everything was ready.
Two colleagues ended up doing this work over the weekend, but looking back, if I was the one having to get something deployed over the weekend, I would have just refused and come back to work as usual on Monday and watch that idiot explain why it's not live.
Free breakfast before work starts
Overtime if working on weekend
New and fun challenges for every new project3
Sitting down for an entire weekend with a couple of friends, just to work on a side project.
No deadline, just fun. And beer, lots of beer 😅6
*Spends all weekend writing come cool autonomous code for a robot*
*Comes to school to test such code*
*Has high expectations, excited to see it work*
*Finally runs the code*
*Robot starts shaking*
And.... It draws too much power.. God dammit.5
Got this email from my manager today... a bit of a downer to my three day weekend!
I actually don't talk about work (in an indentifiable way), and I think most of the other points in their guide are utter BS (and unenforceable).
I am pretty open (about myself) on social media though, so feel sorry for HR if they've been combing through it! 🤣42
Manager: "We're gonna have to work over the weekend to add this shiny new feature!"
Me: "Peanuts and Incentives included?"
Manager: "No, but you get job satisfaction!"
- There are no stupid questions. Please feel free to ask.
- You don't have to memorize, but try to understand.
- Document so you never have to remember.
- Teach so you will master and never forget.
- Even if we have different responsibilities do not ping pong issues because overall the client only sees one company name so we work as one.
- Do not disturb while on vacation leave unless it's life or death.
- Relax, sleep and have a happy weekend.
Boss asked me to work the weekend today...
Told him I have to buy some shoes and do work around the house so I can't.
In reality I'll be doing a personal project and prettying up my CV ofcourse!
P.S. this is for a project he has had me rewrite 3 times so far.5
A true story.
"Ok you did a very good job during these 3 months, so we think you can go on with us."
"Thanks, so how about the final contract?"
"What? oh no eheh, you will do other 3 months as test because we want to see if you can do also other stuff not only as developer, we need that you act also like a secretary, a tester, a manager, and working again for home after work, and also during the weekend, but we can't pay extra work of course. So, what you think?"
The magic world of startups5
That moment when you had a good weekend and it is Monday again.
You log in to your work PC and see 15 emails... There goes my Monday again.
And 12 of those turn out to be congratulations on the recent release 😥3
Went back to KDE over the weekend from i3wm. I was getting tired of having to configure my setup manually everytime I wanted to change a setting, and having things break, and having to bug fix said breaks, while also trying to handle Java MVC and node.js dev work.
Nope. Too much. I want the macOS experience but with the control of Linux. Much happier with KDE. It does use about 720MB more RAM on an average session but when you have 8GB does it really matter?
Now to figure out how to get Firefox to play nice with Plasma, or give Konqueror a spin.15
When you discover this new amazing programming language and play with it the whole weekend and then realize it’s Monday again and you need to go back to the office to work with some legacy GOTO spaghetti... 🍝🌧9
The senior developer who's never had a smartphone in his life gave me a lecture on why my UI improvements to the mobile application were terrible and to revert them. He didn't want to hear squat from me, and was literally saying "You're not gonna win this" while I was trying to argue why these features were necessary.
1 month later, we get a Interaction Design expert to review the app. His recommendations were hardly surprising.
Except, now I have a tighter deadline and will work this weekend. Sigh.4
When I’m at work I can’t wait to get home to work on personal projects only to get home with no energy and just procrastinate and/or play games entire weekend/afternoon.
Think is i also feel extremely guilty if i try to relax and do nothing, but at the same time able to understand that i need time to chill, just can’t get in a positive mindset about it. Am i the only one?10
My coworker is sick so according to "Agile" I need to work on the weekend?
Literally go fuck yourself. This shit doesn't fly in literally any industry but this.19
We're 2 months away from going live.
This has repeated for several weeks now :
Monday : 17 issues (aka bugs, incomplete features)
Work work work.
Friday : 7 issues
Nice. Lets get a good weekend rest and finished this next week.
Next Monday : 17 issues.
QA found some new bugs or some already resolved issues came back with different details.
...and repeat. Exact numbers, plusminus 1 or 2.7
Client declined to allow billing over the weekend, demanded I work 20 hours. Task will be mysteriously blocked or delayed for the next two days as a result.6
Ok, I’m over windows. Done with it.
I have been a long time windows, I’ve used most versions since 3.11, and have used Linux for a few years on the side (not as a daily but have needed it for work and servers) but with yesterday’s update, not only have I lost audio for the countless time again, as far as Windows is concerned there’s nothing fucking wrong with it, besides the lack of sound and all.
Drivers are reinstalled, deleted and reinstalled, redownloaded from manufacturer, different drivers installed.
Ran a system restore back to before the update and just dropped the hdd into another laptop (it’s identical model) and still no fucking audio (to exclude the audio chip as failing)
So fuck it, I’m spending my weekend finding a distro that will work, I’m fucking done!10
Just signed the contract for renting my first ever place today, and tomorrow is my first day of work as a software developer at a large company... It's been a crazy weekend, and tomorrow is probably gonna be even crazier! Little bit nervous tho... We'll see how it goes4
He fails at managing his time and can't finish his tasks in work days ... suggests to work on the weekend and drags the whole team with him.
Sorry mate, but I ain't fucking working on weekend !
Team lead my ass 😡😡9
Guys, does anyone promise himself to work on a personal project on the weekend which he really is excited about working on. Then he ends up having done nothing but play a game or go out?
Like i have this idea that i really wanna make but i just cant get myself to sit down and actually do it. :/10
Client (on Tuesday): I was X features on my website before the weekend!
Me: Sure thing, I can do that. Just a reminder, my rates are $Y/hr and the changes won’t go up until I’ve been paid in full.
Me: Here’s the changes you’ve requested on the test environment, please review. Also here’s the invoice for my work, as soon as that’s paid I can upload the changes.
Annnnnddd silence since then... I’m glad that I don’t have to count on just one client’s payment, but if you wanted before the weekend and I have it all set up, please don’t ghost me.2
I tried writing this rant before, but I was (and still am) in too good of a mood so it was lengthy, meandering, and over-specific. so I'll summarize(ish).
* working weekends
* incompetence and/or screwy integrations
summary of the summary:
* I can't fix someone else's mess if you don't talk to me!
Summary^3: #TODO: learn telepathy
Bossman at work signed up a very lucrative client by promising them something he couldn't deliver because he misunderstood and miscommunicated scope -- anti-fraud, if you've been following my rants.
Their signup (all four...) are screwy and cause issues and nobody knows why. I didn't write the code, have barely even glanced through it, and it uses a third-party (Clover) that's rather screwy.
Bossman has been asking me to do various things concerning the merchant, but has never been around to provide specifics, so I'm left to guess. I've done my best, but due to the aforementioned screwiness, I really have no idea what's going on. I just sort of muddled my way through.
Bossman also asked me, super late on Friday night (after 8:30pm), to rename one of the merchants because there are two with the same name (with different Clover creds, etc.) and that's just confusing. I didn't see the message because late and tired, and he didn't follow up or text/call me until two days later (today, Sunday). I also thought these were strictly for diagnosing and were de-listed. I had no idea the merchant was live and people were actually purchasing things for it. Had I known this I would have freaked out and demanded specifics on Thursday/Friday because wtf? debugging in production? with broken merchants? selling things for real money? scary bad? hello?
Anyway, I didn't see his message until he texted me about it at like 5pm today while I was about 2 hours from my computer. He's understandably frustrated, and I totally don't blame him, but fuck, miscommunication is a serious problem in this company, and that's amazing because it's so freaking small.
But the short version is that I'm likely going to get blamed for all this, Clover screwiness included. Bossman and I set up a call for 10am tomorrow and I'm positive he's going to try pinning it on me. Totally not going to let him, but his social is lv16+ while mine's like. 2 or 3. 😕 I'll see how it goes.
Really though, I should read @rutee07's book and just roast these fuckers.3
12 days of work, 12 fucking days straight and I meet the Friday deadline for this ridiculous sprint of never ending tasks.
There’s no better feeling then bringing everything together at 5pm on Friday, pushing to Git and waking out that door knowing there’s nothing more to do until Monday’s testing!!!!
Now excuse me while I go sleep my weekend away!2
To client: "I will have the project ready in 4 weeks" - starts work on the last weekend before the deadline.
Why do I always do that?2
My week at glance:
Monday: Sunday night hangover
Tuesday:Prepare report for progress meeting.
Wednesday: Progress meeting
Thursday:work little bit for next week progress meeting.
Friday: weekend fever and hence not in mood to work.
#big #company #work #culture5
My weekend full of exhaustion and sleep is drawing to a close. Time to start a week full of exhaustion and struggling to stay awake at work.10
I genuinely love to write code. Sometimes on the weekend I write some code for work because I don’t have a hobby project. I should probably get a hobby project.3
Took a job during the summer vacation and was expected to sit through excel and click products and fill in info (mundane tasks). Overheard the boss talking to the coworkers "We need to translate 77,000 urls into images, how do we split this work up?" I jumped in and said "I can write that in code so you don't have to do it" They all looked at me like I was some sort of magician O_O. Had the program running during the weekend on three computers and all of the 77,000 urls are now a beautiful mess of pdfs and jpgs. Do you have a story that made you feel like a wizard?7
On this weekend, I wanted to work on a product design, I wanted to learn networking, I wanted to write my blog, I wanted to work on my current open source project.
What did I do?
Watched Mr. Robot
And no, I don't feel guilty.2
So, I was in the middle of a rant about how disorganized maintenance is this weekend, but husband said he might have to go to the ER for a headache that got worse after he passed out in formation and no one caught him.
Suddenly, I don't give a fuck about work. I want to be on a plane to him to be there in case the ibuprofen doesn't work and it's more serious than he thinks. He's less than a week from graduation. I just need him to come home so I can take care of him.3
When you finally wake up on a weekend excited to work on your projects but your family is comming over for lunch (that will take up the whole afternoon too)...4
Some free time at the weekend. My immediate thoughts are "Ooh, I could get some work done to get ahead on Monday"
The cons of your job as a hobby!
At my previous employer my boss asked me how long a project would take. Told him about a week maybe two. He then informed me it was due that day. Apparently the client gave it to him months ago. I worked a 35 hour weekend to make it happen. Then he complained that my weekly time sheet was higher than normal. He didn't think it was accurate and underpaid me. So glad I got out of agency work.6
So we have Oncall system. Every month I get one working weekend.
Now senior engineers and lead are assholes. They think they can bully us. They are putting their Oncall work on our heads.
I refused to do it. But my partner in Oncall agreed to take up their weekend Oncall and in return they would do our weekday. I don't see how that is fair enough.
I refused to do it still. My partner apparently ended up doing it alone this weekend.
I don't FUCKING need to lick anyone's ass here! I don't FUCKING need to do these things to be in their good books! Waiting for the time when I saw GOODBYE TO THESE FUCKING ASSHOLEZZZZ5
PM: Yes, so, could you please do those changes on this page tomorrow by 3 pm and push to prod?
Me: Yeah sure! Noted :) (task is to "untick" a checkbox in a page's settings on our CMS)
* the next day -- 11 am *
PM: erm yes so please can you do the changes I told you about, it's getting urgent and you didn't start it already and it stresses the hell out of me because today is friday and it needs to be up and running fine for Monday 12pm and you don't work on weekend so I'd like yo-
my boss sent us an email saying that we have to send him a summary of our work everyday and how much time we invested on the job because sometimes we work at home and he won't know if we really worked.
me: *sleeps for 4 hrs*
me: *configures apache in amazon linux real quick*
me: i worked for 4 hours blah blah and i fixed the apache configurations blah and i coded in js and php for the datatables thing blah blah *sends email*
boss: nice work! have a great weekend.
now thats how you do it when u procrastinate a lot!9
Life of a developer. Wake up in the middle of the night on a weekend and have the solution for the problem at work.3
2 days ago I made an image crawler with a web interface that scrapes whatever url you put in and returns a list of images that it found on that website, right now it's only limited to img elements
It was pretty fun to work on it during the weekend :310
I am always looking forward to the weekend to have some time to work on my side projects, and then I can't get my ass up to do it.1
Got a nice blackmail email sent to my work email during the weekend. Too bad when I got back to work on Monday he already sent the pics. JK this is a work email he doesn't have shit on me.
He did send the email from my email but the password he said hasn't been since I started working here. I just feel insulted. Come on guys let's donate so he doesn't share how hard I work.
Here's the email: https://text-share.com/view/...9
My wife is sick, my infant daughter is teething, and my toddler son won't stop begging for fruit snacks. I haven't slept more than 4 hours in the last 48 hours.
And now, I have to work on my weekend, since our division refuses to say "No, that wasn't in the scope of work" to another business unit and put them in their place. They're lucky they're getting the feature they requested 6 weeks from launch _at all_, let alone with the extras that they requested 4 weeks from launch. Now it's on my shoulders to fix this bullshit because they won't pony up extra budget to pay the external dev shop we used (who failed to implement said features in a timely fashion) to fix this shit.
I really need to get my business shit together and start consulting on my terms. Working for other people can suck a fuck.4
Monday, at the weekend I will start working on that thing I wanted.
Friday, tomorrow I can finally start working on that thing I wanted
Sunday night, damn, I wanted to work on that thing I wanted2
Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2
!rant I’ve been with the same company for 6 years, but the past few years things have been continually declining. Nothing has been awful, I just feel like there is very little room for promotion, or even worse, knowledge gains (we do a lot of win forms, c# mvc, vb6, sql stored procs). I’ve been so desperate to learn “new stuff” that I’ve been picking up contract work where I can find it (for nights and weekend projects). I’m excited to say that the company I’ve been doing most of my contract work with has offered me a full time remote position! It’s a 30% increase in pay, all new tech (mostly React Native, ReactJS, GraphQL, Nodejs, python, and integration with existing .Net applications)!
Feel honored DevRant, I’m telling all of you before I even share the news with my family (with the exception of my wife)!1
I dont work weekends ever. And I dont bring my work home with me, once I finish for the day, Im finished. Even if there is a deadline looming or something is due for a weekend release. I will only work when Im in the office. And I wont work extra unpaid hours. All that does is create unrealistic expectations from your employer and clients. I did it once and learned that there was no point and I could have just gone home and it would have been fine. Im never doing it again.3
Trying to decide how to spend my weekend, continue to learn node.js and angular.js OR learn vim OR work on side project...to many choices not enough time7
I was hoping to work on my project this weekend. Turns out, the kindergarten gave all the parents a task - to make a Christmas-y house with their child.
Well, I didn't work on my project, no doubt about that. But I found some other place to overengineer the shit out of it. And, frankly, I LOVED it.
2 days wasted. Not even sorry.
EDIT: all the materials are from the trash bin. That makes it even more fun!
EDIT2: Paint job is my wife's :) I'm too sloppy for it.13
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb couldn't get their shit together for 3 months, but their bit is in order now. Will you work the weekend for free to make up the the schedule?
- root DB access on production
- git commit -am "Stuff" (message)
- Not doing backups
- Using personal licensed software for company work
- 1 commit per day or weekend
- Taking work to home1
Dat moment when your contact person phones you and ask If you delete the whole Release Folder...
YEAH SURE I WAS IT BECAUSE I LIKE TO WORK ON WEEKEND
Fyi: FTP with one user for everyone - harhar stupid bricks
Damn maintenance windows. I mean, I get that the SaaS product my boyfriend works on can't go out in the middle of the day. But he just spent weeks on a business trip, with an absolutely mad sleep schedule because he's redesigning their data center (or something. Don't ask me, it's a hardware problem...) and now he's finally coming home today and I'm super excited but all he's going to want to do this weekend is sleep. Even though I'd love to spend Sunday going to this yearly event, or finally getting another round of DnD in (everyone else in the group is available). But nope. Bloody all-hours work is taking away his (and thus my) weekend too.2
Find out this week if the internship I've been doing will be turned in to a permanent position... Tanking myself! Doing some work this weekend to make sure I've done the best I can do prove myself.2
Ok, so I basically spent my weekend trying to work out why the fuck my python docker container would not connect to my mariadb docker container. Tried fucking everything, bridged network, host network, links (even though theyre deprecated), you name it. It would NOT WORK!
In my despair I finally turned to StackOverflow. There I was told 5min after posting the question that the reason was probably that mysql is a quite heavy service, which takes a bit to start up.
I thought to myself "Oh, get the fuck outta here, that can't be it, shit's way too easy to work!"
I tried it nevertheless by adding a 10sec delay before querying the database AND THE MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT ACTUALLY WORKS!! So, I essentially just lost a weekend because I was too impatient... I think I'm gonna punch some trees now.4
I took two days off work alongside the weekend for a mini vacation.
I have one full day left but I already miss work :-/4
Spending all weekend on research and testing for a new feature, finding the perfect framework for it, going trough the API just to come Monday to work and get told by Project Lead: we can't use it, it is not in our stack.
How can it be in our stack!? We've never done anything like that before!2
New boss gets us to work overtime, all weekend and till 9pm. Promising that we will get that time back.
We get the project through the door. His KPI looks great to his boss. He then slithers his way around hints about this time back. Someone confronted him today and he says he can't officially recognise the over time due to company policy. The fucker.9
Working on photo contest site, no design, no specification. 2 weeks until deadline.
CEO: Deadline is one week earlier, and client wants to have video uploads and automatic facebook share too.
Me: We don't even have a contract and design to work with yet.
CEO: No worries, the contract will be signed by the time you finished the website.
Site done in 1 week, including weekend days and overtime. Production on client's server as asked by CEO.
3 weeks later...
Me: So van you pay the overtime I worked?
CEO: Sorry client not payed and says they don't like the end product. I can't afford to pay you overtime.
2 days later.
CEO: The online department is lossy so you have to work harder in the next month, we have 3 sites to be done.
Me: Do we have the contracts?
CEO: No worries...5
You guys work from home because of coronavirus?
Me on the other hand, have to work on weekend on my desk to finish an urgent project, it’s for the ministry of education (who closed all schools and launched an online courses) to monitor the effectiveness of the new platform and fix some bugs on it.2
When your new team-members don't commit their code end of day Friday and you end up working the whole holiday weekend to fix their shitty work while they're away for the week....
Joys of being a team-lead..1
Welp, got the weekend off and since computer doesn't work anymore, me has no entertainment.
Me is sad. 😞
Me is in a financial clasp.
If the phone gives in too (which, let's be honest, it's nearing it's natural death time) I'm majorly fucked. Let's hope it doesn't give in for a few more months at least. (until I finish thesis, at the very least)
... I think I'm gonna spend this weekend just being sad. 😞 And PMS, ofc. 😐 🔻31
i am actually exciting to go to work tommorow.
Over the weekend the gf was away and it was quite boring, gaming didnt do the thing so i relaxed quite a lot but i am somewhat excited to continue to work tomorrow, to further my project. I was able to stop to do nothing at home, but still..its a bit weird3
I started the weekend saying i wanna code some personal projects. Its sunday and u know what, fuck no. Sure we love to code but we are still human gonna go sit in a jakuzi and swim a little tonight. We need to relax every now and then. So if ur feeling theres a lot of shit u need to do... take a break. Seriously everyone needs it3
Working in a company on boring projects but can't quit because I need money.
Luckily, during weekends, I am working on my own project and getting so much satisfaction on making my thing work...
Money and constant job is one thing but doing something I love means so much for me. I hope there will come day I could combine both of those.
Have a nice weekend, guys!2
My first hackathon when I was in my university. I never used to work on any side projects apart from assignments and academic projects. I was so shocked when I saw that people were so dedicated in developing a working product in a weekend sacrificing sleep and food. I got so depressed that I wasn't doing anything and people around me were doing so much!!!!! That's when I was motivated to learn more, do more, work more. After this, I never missed a single hackathon while I was studying :) I'm so much better at what I do now because of hackathons.
I had a 4 day weekend and haven't programmed at all. 😅 Been playing games and hanging out with friends 😋.4
Pending issues : 5. Deadline is nearing.
Tweaking around, I found some bugs on functionalities that for some reasons have magically passed QA. The bug was quite simple to be found.
Created 5 issues for 5 different bugs. Pending issues is now 10.
Manager : I am not happy. Last week we have 6 and we're going to weekend this week at 10?? Wtf you guys have been doing?? Why isn't there any progress?? Are you guys not doing any work?? You guys been lazy??!
Yeah, we been here sitting around play computer games all day.
Being a Dev has its perks.
Started working a couple hours ago (yep, on a Saturday night) to get some code working for a demonstration of a system prototype on Monday.
The code in question was some recursive directory traversal tied in with some file generation in NodeJS. 2 hours later I nailed it, and the feeling of satisfaction of having that code working on all of your tests is overwhelming.
It's a different kind of excitement compared to sitting behind your desk at the office.1
Me: oh boy i have so much fun stuff planned for this weekend, better get my work done before it
My immune system: here have this flu with some pink eye on top2
Weeeeeeeek - END🤽♂️🤽♂️🏖🏝
I am authorized to say FUCK WORK. I don't wanna hear anything else but PARTY PARTY PARTY for these two HOLY DAY.
Long week of work, going to enjoy beach tomorrow.🚣♂️🚣♂️🚣♂️🚿⛱⛱4
Here's a weird gripe: sometimes I wish I loved my job less. It stresses me out but I didn't work at all this weekend and sitting down at my desk early Monday morning I realized I missed it.2
Finally had a weekend to myself to work on some projects. I got my hands on a Sonoff switch. Did a manual flash of some new firmware and got it setup on my crappy old washer to do a little DIY smart home upgrade.
Always nice to get to do a personal project 😊 Just wish I had time to tinker more.3
That late night sunday before sleep feeling, when your are almost eager to know what crap the next day is going to bring you.3
Is it just me who looks forward to long weekend but when it's actually here, gets bored after 2 days and now looks forward to get back to work?
Or have I lost it?3
everyone is here like "yes the weekend I can finally work on personal code projects" and I'm just like "yes the weekend I can finally work on stuff the project manager promised the client for Monday morning" # whatstheweekend1
I spent ALL of friday trying to get some code to work (some awful MS Analytic Server stuff). I usually finish at 6pm. I was getting very frustrated, as it's for a project that I've made some big promises on.
So at 5:30, I started throwing random ideas at it.
At 5:58, it worked.
My weekend has been a lot more relaxed than it otherwise might have been. Weirdly, this has been the second time in a month that I've got something working with minutes to spare on a Friday.1
One of the devs didn't show up to stand yesterday, remote or in person. Turns out he was in the hospital for seizures.
They asked me this morning to work Sunday and I said no. It's not worth the money and I'd rather have the weekend. I don't need to be prone to seizures to know that this level of work is deeply unhealthy.1
Trying to work on the same project all week, but every other project decided to come in and take priority.
Thank goodness it's the weekend
My lead always steal my work and showcase it has his work to the manager. I always look for a chance to trap him in front of Manager.
One fine day, He gave me an work which has to completed on Monday, I sit over the weekend and finished it’s but partially committed it.
He is a blind thief, As always he says that he himself completed over the weekend.
While running in front of the manager they face huge issues because it’s a half cooked product. Manager purposely sent an email to our team without mentioning the name of my lead.
After few days my lead silently put paper and left the team.3
I always confuse sunday night as a weekend night and go to work on mondays with severe sleep depravation
All week I was too tired to work on my projects in the nights.
Now it's weekend and I'm still tired.2
My company have become fucking douche bag! I have been working overtime everyday day till late nights for 2 weeks including one weekend and I got a notice for slow work just because I was not able to work on the second weekend because of health issues. Fuck this insensitive shit company treating employees as a piece of shit!10
Why can't I just enjoy my weekend like a normal person for once? Instead I can't help but work on a side project because I know I won't sleep tonight if I don't!2
*1 hour passes*
Me: adds new code
*1 day passes*
Me: Why did it work?
*some random weekend*
On call developer: Who fucking wrote this code!4
tell my boss on Friday that I'll work through the weekend to get done work done on some python code.
he doesn't give out vpn access so I can't use our company git so I put the project on a flash drive to work on.
come into work and I have an email. on Sunday he did everything I said I was doing (and had done) and then refactors the entire repo so even if he hadn't done the work, all of what I did became useless.
His way is the only way. but good luck getting him to tell you how he wants it. you just have to do a bunch of work only for him to tell you he doesn't like the way you did things and then he does it himself.
makes me realize why their other programmers didn't stick around. because they had to work so closely with this guy.
glad I started looking for other jobs sooner then later.1
I mean, impossible for who? For someone working 9-5 without procrastination, sure there are.
I have been a student and a procrastinator most of my life, so yeah, a 40 hour week's work is possible in two days with minimum sleep.
Also done massive projects in a week's time. If you know what you're doing, it's not that impossible.
Although, I find working with others almost impossible in some occasions, specially where you don't see eye to eye despite however much you try. (time-wise, speaking)9
So we have a long weekend here (4 days) due to a national holiday, and I already spend 2.5/4 days coding for work, doing tasks for a sprint that didn't even start yet, just so when I go back to work, I can feel like I do nothing and still earn money1
Blizzard coming this weekend. I get to spend the night at work because our disaster recovery plan isn’t in full swing (Yes it’s paid, but I am going to lose my mind). Awesome. Suck my ass, winter.2
Went to work pretty excited this morning, and found out that my neural network that has been training all weekend was still dumb as fuck...
No need to fear artificial intelligence (at least not mine)
When the project lead gave a half hour speech for why our shitty web page was similar to Elon Musk’s rocket and how we needed to work extra to get it off the ground, to justify an extra 3 months of unpaid weekend work at 10 hours a day, after already getting 6 months of unpaid weekend work when I was a junior dev.1
Frustration at its peak !!
So the CTO of the company I recently joined, whom I considered to be cool personality of all the open culture in the office and open communication, seems to be all wrong.
Few days back he suddenly dropped a mail to all the tech team members mentioning that we need more streamlined process in the company and many more blah blah stuffs... to which all of us agreed.
But. But. But. The last line(small font size) mentioning that from now onwards we need to come on Saturdays too until further notice. I mean WTF !!? Seriously.
But today in stand-up when one of the guy asked the agenda, he just tossed the question saying that we need to be more active attending "client tickets". Goddammit. We are devs, not tech support.
To this one of the other dev, said the exact same thing that was going in everyone's mind. Call the team that are required on Saturdays. To which his reply was, " Come on Saturday, we will speak then".
I was like 👏👏👏
P.S. Not that we are not ready to come on Saturdays, but at least take consent of all the members in the team, if you all babble so much about open culture and shit. We have friends and family too to have fun with, and need to take little rest on weekends.
And most importantly, tell us some firm reasons to be there on weekends, not just "You have to come, because we said so!"
Back from long weekend... Already want another...
Perhaps I've finally realized the team cannot be saved, work isn't fun anymore, it sucks being the linchpin, and I'm just not having fun anymore...
And for one I think I've even take a pay cut to get onto a new but better managed and 100% senior team
Looking at Slack, it seems like several people were working past 8pm last night. I refuse to feel guilty for only working 40 hours a week. That's all on them.1
Going on vacation for a couple of days next week. So, apparently, the people scheduling the on-call rotation think it's a great idea to assign me on-call duty next week.
ME: ...you know I'm going on vacation, right?
THEM: Oh don't worry, nothing ever happens, and 95% of the time it's just this easy stuff that can be dealt with quickly.
ME (internally): ...I was taking this vacation time to get *away* from having to think about work. Now I'm going to have to keep this in the back of my mind the entire time I'm away, checking for alerts, and potentially interrupt my flow to deal with work, defeating the point of why I'm taking the down time.
Fuck this. If I'd known earlier I'd have tried to get the time rescheduled, but of course this happens on the weekend, the day before.4
Shout out to the storm that left me with a spotty internet connection since the weekend... Fuck this...
Also shout out to my ISP who can still get this fixed within the week despite the weather conditions in this whole country...
And now, even public transit is down and I can't ride to work with my damn bike because of the fucking weather... Some construction job that fucked things up... Well, shout out to that guy too for smoking Crack or whatever on the job. 😠
Fuck, if this day gets any worse I will probably end up in the hospital, jail or the morgue.2
Resolve to leave laptop at home on a long weekend vacation away to force yourself to relax and not work on anything. Spend parts of weekend thinking: "this would be the perfect spot/cafe to work on the snail simulation!"
Sunday guilt: Do I ssh in and finish the testing I didnt mange Friday? Pro-Tip: never set up your work VPN.3
My boss is going to merge a huge new feature I've wrote today after the break.
Against all my advices to not do these kind of things on fridays
I will leave no for the weekend
I'm going on vacation tomorrow morning
No one will be able to reach me and I won't be back till thursday
wish him luck
and wish me luck to for not getting a shitful of work on thursday
Week started of great.... :/
I always leave my laptop at work, except this weekend. Guess what I forgot to bring to work today....
My friends do it for me, so does my wife.
It helps that my coworkers are my friends and they are devs, so there is that.
Other than that my phone would usually rang during the weekend nonstop with shit to do. I normally tend to stick to being at home with my wife and child.
My city is strange in that everyone and their mothers parties every weekend and people are usually friendly enough to involve everyone with anyone during the weekends. I like and dislike that (loud shit annoys me)
My dear boss is a weekend alcoholic, so there are null chances of making us go to work and if they do they let us chill during the work week.
Not only that, but the entire IT dpmnt is really friendly towards one another. We are one big happy family(we never fight with one another, not even the sys admins/network dudes.1
I cannot work on my personal project this weekend.. because the fucking IT team gave me a fucking mac charger yesterday and it fuckin stopped working today.. FUCKING waste of a weekend!!!!
I guess I will be gaming for the next 48 hours.. on my windows PC..
(And please don't say Linux Rocks in the comments coz I had to work on an iOS app..)12
Got through an entire day at work with just a "good morning" and "have a good weekend". Team was focused today - it was a good day!
So, idk if I told you guys yet but I'm a web dev intern.
Recently the company I work at doubled in size and so this was the result...
Here's what my weekend looked like:
0830: Math exam at school
1005: Get on the public transportation
1100: Arrived at internship
1130: Get started on setting up 8 new PC's
/*realize I have to do them one by one, clean window installation, office, updates, and some random software. Internet connection sucks, so one PC at a time it is.*/
2130: bus ride home.
0900: Get on public transportation to work
1000: Arrive and start finishing up PC's
1600: Start moving old pc's to new room and install new pc's
2130: Get on bus ride home
0830: Get call from second job asking me to do some stuff.
1100: be done with second job
1400: Get on public transport to work
1500: start cleaning up old pc's for reuse
2130: Go home
And today we finished installing everything.
I've spend 17 hours of my weekend at internship. Guess who's taking Wednesday and Friday off?
Fuck I am so screwed... Spent an hour + trying to implement a Trie except I didn't know it was called a Trie... and don't remember how to implement one...
I am so fcked for my technical interview/test i m planning to take this weekend...
It's like I know i've seen this problem before and the brute-force way probably won't work... but after an hour trying to implement the right way... i just go fck it...
and lo and behold... it doesnt work..
Google the solution and the code is like less than 100 lines... and probably took the guy 10 minutes to write...6
When you bring work home at the weekend with the hope of getting loads done and then you have a brain freeze and can't remember what you need to do first ....... 😡
CEO: so how long would this take?
Me: Me plus another engineer... probably 4 weeks.
CEO: What if I give you XYZ(principal engineers from infra team)
Me: Wait... no i need a full stack engineer.
CEO: okay fine. I'll give you 3 engineers, can you get it done in 2 weeks instead?
Me: No... some of the work cannot be parallelized.
....a week later
CEO: I thought about it, what if you work days and night, and also the weekend, can you get it done?
CK's nike deal
Eminem's diss shit and MGK killing it with Rap Devil
Wife free from work this weekend
Made a rather large project with Pharo and Seaside to see if I dig it(i did, but it ain't replacing my other tools anytime soon, shit requires reading far too much code and digging around dark corners of the net for it)
Finished 2 projects for work and got ahead of 2 others for this week.
Shit b, this is one interesting weekend indeed.
This weekend, I have been grinding a lot on leetcode. Even though I am grinding part of me believe that the interview process is broken for relying too much on those questions. I know it's a way to filter but I still think it's broken. But I guess I have no choice since that's how the interviews work .
I guess from now to next 1-2 months I will be busy with leetcode. I also have to read some system design questions.
Fuck, so many things to prepare4
Spend all week waiting on my VM to be setup so I can actually work and get caught up... Crash it in 5 minutes... On a holiday weekend 😓
I'm doing work during the weekend. Just to parse this line of json.
Argh, what drive me nuts is after discovering that json response wasn't proper.
*sample - from what i seen*
This is my first time seeing json response with =. Since my assignment is to retrieve the response.
I cheated by calling replace over and over to correct the string of response to correct json format.
That is actually production stuff. Knowing that makes me sick to the stomach.7
After a long week, bringing work home this weekend, this made me open the most satisfying smile. Thanks @dfox and @trogus, from a pt-BR dev2
I pretty much leave important tough and challenging dev work for the weekend, I start my weekend days around 9AM and interact with no one until 4PM, after that I just go back to life lol
During the week if I'm not doing anything I play around with my projects else I go out with friends.
I want to cry... Fuck it.. shiit. .. :( :( ;(
Wasted half of the Weekend to Setup MySQL on my vServer which uses ssl encryption, have specific User and so on.
Thought: well, the User mysql is not so good as a Name. Drop it, you don't need it.
What did I? Instead of Drop User mysql , I typed Drop Database mysql.
Fuck that fucking Shit. I'm so sad right now. Broked the complete MySQL Database. Nothing is working anymore. And the server is new, I've Just made One Backup. Deleted this a few hours ago.. also accidently.
Help me :( Shit :( so sad :( Now, I don't have Motivation anymore to work with the vServer :(3
Some <super smart> person ran DHCP in production lab (without disconnecting from main network and/or using firewall)
, now the admin turned all the ports off and went home.
Traffic gens are also unavailable now so are upgrade servers.
Result: I can't run my work over the weekend and the reports are expected on Monday.
Not so bad : I'll run on Monday.
Bad part : This fucking shit takes 2 days to do everything on the rack.3
So no decent internet for me the whole damn weekend and I have no more podcasts left to listen to while working. FUUUUU ...
The internet "technician" that was supposed to connect the house to VDSL really fucked my connection up - I escalated through support and I can't fix it.
(I hate it when I can't fix things myself! Especially electronic ones! Especially simple electronic ones! Damn it!)
Einmal mit Profis arbeiten!*
*[Translation, angry German to angry English:
I'd very much like to work with professionals. One. Fucking. Time.]6
This weekend was supposed to be a productive one, I was going to start with a little project that I want to do and replenish some hours of work, sadly I decided to install VS code and configure it, 5 hours invested already, fuck a me and my stupid ideas1
I know it's a weekend, but there are a few lifeless developers who work even on Sundays. Stackoverflow.com is down :/6
Its been so long since I had a weekend in which I wanted to be productive and also was as productive as I wanted to.
This weekend everything turned around. Last week I learned to use blender to make basic models while I was traveling to and from work.
Today I was really productive and started working on my VR wooden toy block building game.
I now have an infinite blocks box, with randomly colored blocks which you can color yourself as well.
Gonna do performance and textures tomorrow.
Cant wait until Ive finally made a playable game, its been 4 years now.
14 years of age, couldnt go with to the beach with my sister the weekend (all older friends and they wanted to have fun) spent the weekend:
1. Waking up
2. Cleaning yard and garage
3. Finding old pc of my fathers
4. Him telling me he will tell me how to install windows 95 (we were not that up to speed with the latests trends at the time)
5. Running in and out installing and asking for commands on how to install things and run things
Fast faward a few years, im now a web developer working from home (recently retrenched) and my sister asking me to get a job where i work.
Couple of years ago when I was leading small team that was aiming to deliver new application for company I worked in we were fighting for bonus during weekend. I told my coworkers that I am at work this weekend and try to meet this impossible deadline and get bonus for it cause I need this money. I don’t expect them to come since I can’t provide them nothing more then free time during work week.
Well they appeared at work.
One of directors tested application on Friday and sent email to ceo that it’s not working pointing around 20 bugs in long message so we won’t get bonus.
We closed around 50-100 bugs during weekend and I responded to email on Monday ( deadline day ) that all of those bugs he mentioned are not present on test environment version and he must tested some very old version.
Ceo called me and we clicked trough first 5 from list in his office and everything worked. I told him that deadline is Today but he refused to give us bonus to not discredit his director but proposed double bonus for squashing couple of minor remaining bugs in next two weeks.
We got this bonus and had a great laugh about it.
I also herd that this director called his qa to tell them it’s impossible of what we did.
Well those were funny times. I was young, earning shitty money and had nothing to lose.
Been struggling with an issue all weekend (it had to go to client today) with no solution and without understanding why it was returning the wrong values.
Arrive this morning to the office and team leader asks me about the issue and gives me a new one with higher priority, so I decide to pass my issue to a junior I work with.
While doing so and explaining everything he should look into, by some magic powers I found the reason for the issue
Thank the rubber ducking god!!!
And another weekend full of work, because I don‘t get shit done in the office.
Being kind if the lead dev in my team, everyone is coming to me for nearly everything and I rarely have time to work on my current ‚fulltime‘ project.
It‘s really frustrating. I just want to code .__. FML
(Maybe I should learn other programming languages and switch jobs? I always wanted to learn Haskell)2
I take a look on Dart, which used by Flutter, a "React Native inspired" framework.
Very similar to Typescript and Java, so whatever you write, probably gonna work.
But I feel lack confidence on any language Google promoted. Eg kotlin and Go
Google hired too many PhDs who have nothing to do, so they spend 1 day per week draw some doodles...
Hope this is not another weekend warrior project.🙄9
When your colleagues says "have a nice weekend" but you might need to work 48 hours over the weekend
Anyone just have like a weekend where they stay up really late doing nerdy things or work on their personal projects? I sometimes find myself on certain weekends that I just work on a bunch of personal code, websites, or even if it is changing my accounts around.5
So... This is the deal... I'm currently working part time (15 hours a week) while studying. We have a pretty hectic week at school and my boss is in the states. He told me I could take the week off. Great!
I now have a mailbox close to exploding and 20+ hours of work that has to be done this week. Bye bye weekend
Just got inspired/pissed off enough to write another app... For work....
Guess my dry periods end either tonight or this weekend5
Friday: Expectations vs Reality
Expectation: Work on work for half the day then work on side projects for the rest of the day. Consider it a good day.
Reality: Work on work for whole day. Then have your boss set the expectation to have a project completed by Monday morning that you know will take 3 more days. Hence making you work the weekend to try to get it done in time. -.-4
The feeling you get when a customer is happy and wishes you a happy weekend and tells you to drink a beer for them :) Don't think there is a better feeling work wise :)
I like fridays because I convince myself that this is the weekend I will do some hardcore programming. Instead it is usually the weekend I spend more time finding a new series to watch than actually coding.
Should probably docker-compose down and stop kidding myself since constantly thinking you will do some work next takes away from actually relaxing and you end up worse off.6
A new project kicked off, where a new feature will be added to our app. The mythical creature called "Project Manager" asked us to take OT's and weekend work to rush and finish it. Aaaare you f*ckin' kiddin' meeee??!2
When you are planning to do a great amount of work during the weekend but you get stuck on one thing and there goes working on that one thing the WHOLE weekend.
There goes my project plan.
*Frustration at its best * 😣😣
Can't wait to get back to work tomorrow, long weekend of family has got me antsy for a jira ticket1
I have a son, so my social life pretty much revolves around him. That said, we just had a great weekend. We reserve weekend afternoons (after his nap) for adventures, and I think we do well with it.
I make it very clear to my employer that outside a certain scope, I am simply not available for work. They understand and accept this, but it took a lot of years to get to this point. I've been doing what I do, in some form, for almost twenty years.
God damnit, I'm 20 and already got a burn out due to work (fast food job) and school.
I go to school 5 days a week 8 hours a day and I work every weekend 8 hours a day only so I can afford my study better and to be able to afford my internship to Japan next year.
The worst thing is I'm in a endless loop because if I stop with school I need to work full time to pay off my school loan and if I stop my work I can't pay for part of my school and my internship.
If anyone has any tips for me what to do before this ends badly I will gladly hear them2
Trying to get my SPI SD card reader to work with hwlib...
I can't get the fucking library to do what I want...
(I have to use it, it's a requirement for the project)
There goes my fucking weekend...
Just wanted to work on some of the weekend ideas... I thought let's just install vs 2017... While installing I found out that I can't open any other vs... Not to worry, I thought, vs code may save the day...opened vs code... "Hey... There's new update... since it's normally very quick to update vs code lemme just install the update while vs 2017 is getting installed".. BAM!!! ... Vs Code update process got stuck for 20 mins..."Can I cancel the update? ".. BAM AGAIN!!! now vs code won't open.3
2 years ago, I was working and studying at the same time.
I decided to drop my degree 2nd year because I would not work with all those subjects, being that I was just doing web dev.
Also, I had already lost 4 years doing nothing before starting to work.
Now I'm working on an app for a networking company, as a backend developer, which is basically based on graphs and other complex data structures.
Guess what I'll be start studying this weekend!4
Starting my work day:
* fire up the build script wrapper script wrapping the Docker compose scripts, which starts I dunno 20 different microservices, frontend build processes, watchers, blah, blah, blah, chews my laptop's battery like a muthafukka, wait for 15 minutes, for maybe a 40% chance that maybe it'll work, or maybe I'll have to fix some random thing that's wrong out of the 20 million things that could possibly go wrong and then restart... and if I'm lucky at the end of all this, I get to work on, I dunno, adding some field to a modal?
Firing up my weekend side project:
* php -S and immediately start working productively every time
Fuck the "modern web"4
Friday: I have done a lot of work this week... Should take rest in the weekend
Saturday: Who needs rest? Let's learn new hobbies, watch movies, play games and have fun🤩
Sunday: I think I will take some rest today...But that series is so cool...
Monday Morning: Why did not I take sufficient rest the whole weekend 🥱🤦🏽♂️
Monday Afternoon: Slept for two hours in the office time😑2
Come into work after a 3-day weekend, see a file isn't saved, think it's probably just a random space or something I accidentally added after modifying the crap out of the file and saved for the weekend so I compare the file from the disk to the file in memory. Turns out, I didn't save a single time since I started working on it.
I guess Friday me likes to live dangerously.4
This weekend, I bought a mechanical keyboard to use at work. I'm worried the clicking sound will bother my co-workers around me. Does anybody know if bringing the keyboard to work will make people hate me?
It's a Logitech G610 with Cherry MX Red switches. I ordered some rubber o-rings on Amazon to dampen the keys. They should be coming in tomorrow. Should I risk bringing the keyboard into work before I dampen the keys?7
I wanted to work on my new project this weekend, Friday I started good with a case of beer, chips and... fell asleep. Saturday I started good as well then breakfast happened and evening ended with shots. Today is sunday and I started fresh with deleting and fixing the drunk code from previous days. 2 screens made and 20 lines of code, pretty good weekend.2
when someone promises to complete a project over the weekend that will take several hours, and it's Sunday afternoon with no progress. if they don't do it then it'll be you having to do it scrambling Monday morning to complete for the client. why promise work over the weekend if you aren't going to do it!!!1
I hate mondays. Everyone in the company is in a bad mood, nobody wants to work and the clients are annoying. Mondays should be abolished.
No one asks us developers about our mood and that we spent the weekend working instead of lazing around and having a party.
I have decided to avoid contact with clients and companies on Monday.1
Ohhh update on the LineageOS16. Everything works. So this weekend im doing full port of LineageOS17. Sure its a dirty port since im just basically taking SODP (Sony Open-Source Device Project) sources and using them in LineageOS sources so it has to work kind of but its still a port of custom ROM thats usable. And well since LineageOS17 is getting to the stage that more and more roms are getting out on XDA then well i will do the same.3
So I discovered WAMP this weekend, it's so nice to not have to work on my prod server when making changes and testing out new projects :)
Coordinate with hosting to create a backup and a snapshot for a week prior to crazy intrusive data cleanup we will be doing this weekend.
Saturday comes, here I sit waiting for confirmation of the backup for two hours now.... Dicks.
I took 9 days off. Two 3-days long-weekends included.
First long-weekend went in Holi celeberations.
Weekdays went in planning and executing trip to Vaishno Devi.
Second long-weekend went in resting because Vaishno Devi is a hiking pilgrimage of a total of 30+ kms and 650+ kms away from my house. Totally loved the trip, though. Always a pleasure.
After 9 days of leaves, I come back feeling somewhat mentally fresh and rested.
The very next day, I catch cold and fever. Whole body fucked up. Skull paining from sneezing and blowing nose too much. Body paining from weakness and little fever.
Now.. I don’t want to work at all. Even little work gives me stress. Even though I have time to complete it.
I mean 😪
What an unnecessary hell after 9 days of heaven.2
I casually solved a problem in some private code at work today that I didn't manage to fix the previous two evenings.
Then I forget to push the changes and remembered at home that I turned off my work computer which normally I never turn off so that I could TeamViewer into it (I don't have VPN
Wanted to work on that code this weekend 😒
(Well, we were in a "progession session" meeting right before leaving the office so I kind of forgot about it because of that)
I write a lot of custom code for a program my company sells and there is no good way to run tests on it. I just spent a bunch of time wondering why the change I made didn't work only to find I accidentally clicked paste shortcut instead of paste when copying the file. I really need to take some time to write a program to copy all my code for me instead of relying on a manual process. I guess a new night and weekend project.
That moment when you realize you've basically been having a protracted anxiety attack for two months. Should uh...build character or something, right?
What do you do when your family time conflicts with your work time? What can I do to rotate my work schedule forward so I can get some fucking sleep without giving up on either work or my family?
This sucks, I get like 5 hours of sleep at night and my job wants me to be here no later than 9 for whatever reason.
Not to mention my commute is about 45-60 minutes both ways
Not to mention I'm making just enough money to cover my bases. Going to Costa Rica for a vacation is no where near my ability.. hell even driving across the state for a weekend trip would be wildly out of budget.
I've tried asking for a flexible schedule and ability to work from home as needed but its just become a circular debate.
I'm getting burned out and always feel tired, have no energy to stay motivated or give a shit7
FUCK NVIDIA FUCK FUCKFUJCK FMUJCKFU IKC JCF THFUCKJ TEUFKCJ TUFKC TUCFKFD TFUCJ RUF FCUKC FUCK THEM ALL TO HELL
I'M WASTING MY GODDAMN FUCKIJJNG WEEKEND TRYING TO GET THE STUPID SHITTYAS SS GTX 1050 LAPTOP GPU TO FUCKING WORK on MANJARO AND IT SEEMS LIKE THERE'S NO FUCKING WAY IN HELL I'LL BE ABLE TO DO IT
FUCK THIS GODDAMN COMPANY
HEY, NVDA STOCK IS GOING DOWN SOON, YOU SHOULD ALL FUCKING SELL IT RIGHT NOW AND WARN OTHERS TO DO THE SAME10
Been way too long since I did something that wasn't WordPress, so I decided to take some spare time this weekend to scratch-build something and get around to finally learning how to transition from Foundation 5 to 6 while I'm at it (since jQuery compatibility requirements mandate I finally make that jump going forward...).
Started off with a plan for a custom-designed CMS built around a personal research project I've been doing. Worked it all out mentally. Then got started and realized I probably want to start by securing the system and provisioning for user accounts, so I've been working on that all weekend so far...
On the plus side, I've written a pretty nice user management module for any future personal projects, and have *finally* gotten around to learning how to do prepared statements in MySQLi.
On the neutral side, I still haven't gotten around to building any of the substantive stuff I set out to work on this weekend because I've been helping a friend out IRL with some non-programming stuff.
Such is the way it goes, eh? Hoping tonight I'll finally finish up with the administrative items and be able to get down to building the actual meat of the project.
Had an awesome time coding a tool for work over the weekend. Now I'm writing the documentation and wish I was dead :'(
It's just Tuesday and I'm fed up of the week already.
Weekend can you come quickly? You are the closest thing to an illusion that I actually get a break off work but in actual life, I just get to work remote.
Someone broke our Microsoft deployment toolkit at work and won't own up to it. The whole thing needs nuked and rebuilt. So, I'm stuck with 7 laptops at home to manually build over the weekend.
Get to work
Ci went crazy
Slack is on fire
Some npm modules deprecated approach
Rewrite docker files
Some other npm modules disappeared.
I hate you web technologies, I hate you developers who make releases Friday night.
I hate everything.
Ffs on the weekend just build Ikea fornitures instead of fiddling with my stack!
Running on energy drinks and coffee from one emergency to the other finding solutions to problems noone thought of.
Weekend really can't come fast enough.
So I can get work done.....
I've been coding for just about 2 months now! I literally dont wanna do anything else!! Its all I can think about... I know im not qualified to work a dev job yet lol but I wish i could nab a junior dev position so I can practice 9-5 not just after business hours and on the weekend...
Portfolio websites...are they good, bad, or meh?
As I’m already contemplating making a move from my current (first) dev job due to the fact I’m a glorified data entry clerk, I got thinking about creating a personal/portfolio website.
I already have a domain name, I registered it years ago and just keep renewing it. So I’ve pointed that to my GitHub pages site, and will do some work on this over the weekend.
My question is, are they worth the effort? Would a prospective employer bother to take a look if it was on my cv or linked in?
What pitfalls should I avoid?4
Gotta love the client forced deployments, making the team work all weekend. Having the push to live at 9pm at night and then with 10 minutes left cancelling the whole thing. With a lovely "good job but we are not ready yet"
Me and my coworkers are going to have a weekend "gamejam"/hackathon starting tonight but we can't think of any good challenges to try and code - can you guys come up with something we can try and tackle in a weekend?3
I just finished a hackathon that actually turned out to have been a pitch contest. They invited me to work my ass off for the whole weekend and didn't even bother to ask for the finished project.
When you have been trying to understand what your Hindi client wants from you for half a day, then been implementing it for the other half, and then it is 15:45 and based on result you have send him half hour earlier, he decides that no, it has to work differently and want new result, before weekend.
I spent all day at work writing new features and even fixing a few bugs on our ticketing system. I just pulled out the computer at home to continue working and realized I never pushed any of the code. 6 hours of work sitting in limbo all weekend now. I wanted to finish testing that code before starting on the next feature.
Do I start the next features and finish debugging everything on Monday or do I take the weekend off?
I'm working in two projects at same time, but only one is paying, apparently the free one wanted me to work at the weekend without telling me to do.
What you guys gonna work over weekend? I am planning to build very simple editor to open CSV's. 🙌🏼3
Damn I left work on Friday afternoon with an unsolved problem. I actually solved it on my way home but forgot to make a note so this is now the only thing I can think of. What a beautiful weekend.
Who the twattrumpet invented friday deploy was a good idea? What not who the horsedesecrating dickbadger tought I will have overdue work because this disgraceful human rudiment who has embryonic fluid inside his puffball head instead of brain thinks it is okay tell me sorry man but I forgot to tell you about the bugs you requested for last week. You know what? I will do it but if you dare to disturb me on weekend becausebyou didn't test whenbI told you I will stick your carcass up your ass!!!
Weekend of our big re-platforming finally comes. I'm not invited for overtime work during this transition. Boss emails on Sunday wanting me to test some code.
What the actual fuck? HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Nope. Office could be on fire - not being paid? Not working. 🍺🍺🍺
Got an interview at a financial tech firm. I asked them what I should wear:
Engineering is a casual environment, so we encourage you to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. We are focused on your knowledge and skillset, not your outfit, so please come as you are.
Not a suit, OK... but not sure if I should wear weekend casual or my usual business casual/work clothes...5
Gotta work this entire weekend, including tomorrow... and then the iOS code starts acting up. Haven’t even implemented Android communications yet.
Please have mercy upon me. This is so Kirby—sucks and blows.
One of our corporate clients insists that we push changes and updates to production on either Saturday or Sunday. I've worked weekends for longer than I care to admit now.
A major update that completely changes both the data model and UI is scheduled for deployment this Sunday.
Monday is going to be hell with support requests.
Two currently, one that spends all day cussing and smashing his keyboard, and someone else who keeps sending me random work related shit on Facebook and Whatsapp the entire weekend!1
Probably either writing the occasional lazy commit message, or skipping a few testing scenarios when testing dev work locally. Although to be honest, its rarely out of laziness that I do these things. Its often trying to urgently finish something for a weekend release/hotfix.
Our manager is in tons of meetings all the time. He sees himself as our architect, and he has read and approved code reviews. Yet when he does get time to code and submits his own massive weekend coding binge pull requests, they're often entirely different from everything we've written to this point.
Instead of trying to be consistent with the work we've currently done, he continually argues any comments we make in the code review. I want to be like, "If you wanted it this way you should have designed it this way instead of giving us a bunch of empty class files an interfaces with terrible names."
Oh, I've pulled a lot of all-nighters. I love doing hackathons. I find myself most productive when I work on something in a single stretch. I have ADD that way. If I leave a project mid-way, that's probably the last time I'll be working on it; unless someone comes to me and reminds me about it.
Other than attending organized hackathons, I go on personal hackathons. When I'm in the mood to code something up in my free time, I just find some stupid, random idea to code and code it up overnight. (Oh, I have a very long list of projects that I can complete over the weekend)
Other times, I'll just be in the mood as I'm working on something and then lose track of time (and other bodily calls like hunger) as I finish it.
If my weekend looks very peaceful without any distractions, I put my hand in my project bowl and pull something up to finish it off over the weekend.1
How I try to stay productive:
I seem to be slightly less distracted if there are other people around me. Probably because I have to make an effort to focus, which stops a part of me secretly searching for distractions when there are parts of work that I would rather avoid (like googling error messages). So I used to spend some time of the day in a café or in our family kitchen.
Taking breaks an going for a walk, preferably in the forest (when I work from home).
Prioritization of tasks also helps to focus and do one thing after the other. That said, sometimes it inspires me to do more than one task at a time.
Writing down what I did and want to do (in an actual note book on paper) helps me start a new work day, especially after a weekend off.
Around 24 hours. Over 48 hours!
It's was in high school, I had a job in grocery store stucking up shelfs. I had two shifts that weekend. it's was Saturday I had just finished working a 13 hours shifts and my mates was pressuring me to join for video games and drinking.
Ofc I went there, got super drunk (beer pong and drinking league of legends).
It got really late(around 4am) and I knew I was supposed to be at work at 6 pm, so I call dad told him to drive me home and then to work! He did as awesome as he is!
Had to work 12 hours, I did 11 hours then my boss send me home.I was basically til at bit drink then I arrived I work for 4 hours I had the worst hangover the last 7 hours of work.
When I came we had guest and I had to be present!
Poor life decision, no regrets!
So, what do I have here?
A cross platform mobile app with NO unit tests.
I have to write a big new feature from scratch. (Things can't go wrong, right?)
Started working on it, pointed out problems with the UI/UX designs. The design changed multiple times, still I thought I could finish it by the expected date. And, so I did.
The feature went through testing, and they found bugs. (Surprise...?)
It's already kinda scary to touch someone's code that has no unit tests and no comments. And I think, it's all the more difficult to not introduce bugs.
Also, had to work on the weekend to fix the bugs.
I had some good learnings here, but I'm not sure how I can prevent bugs without unit tests and proper feedback cycle. :/4
When you finally prepare some tea and cookies and want to watch Conan, but you receive FIVE different emails requesting and "urgent" fix 😑.2
PO writes a story. We groom it. Point it. Do the work. Finish the work. Dev test it. Push it to test. Tester find a weird edge case. Talks to me. I agree it’s weird. I talk to PO and the PM in the standup. PO realizes the whole business flow doesn’t make any sense. Changes the AC. Asks us to change/redo shit. 2 days until the end of the sprint.
I guess I’m working this weekend. Not that I have to go anywhere 🤷🏽♂️4
So here it is. Apple release, second round.
This time, uploads to AppStoreConnect took 3 hours and 40 minutes. Submission of the app was at 0.04, just after the planned launch day. Android submission tomorrow.
Tomorrow, and Friday are public holidays.
I'll have to work those, at best being able to not work on the weekend. The client has already told me he's calling me tomorrow morning to talk about things.
I don't want praise, but I'd like him to respect that while I may just be a lowly developer, I would like to have a life.
When are the happy times coming?
How do you train someone to be a programmer fast? (No not like a 'learn to code in a weekend' thing.) Books? Throw them in the deep end? Work with them side by side for a while?
We will be hiring a guy as a programmer. He is very tech/computer savvy, but literally 0 school or work experience programming. I've known him for a little while and honestly trust he'll try to learn but I feel with as little as he knows he is going to get overwhelmed fast. He is not technically under me but it's going to be my responsibility to train him.
I'm worried he's going to get completely overwhelmed and burn out quickly.18
I need to get an office outside home to work in. I was supposed to finish a project this weekend and i didn’t because i just chilled in the comfort of my room all day.6
FYI Free weekend at CodeSchool! https://codeschool.com/free-weekend...
I don't work there I just like their classes.1
Applied to 4 companies last weekend. One of them didnt even have proper working contact forms (they all gave somekind of 503 error).
I even took the effort to just mail them my resumé, do i receive an answer that they are looking for someone with React experience.
I looked over the function a second time, no mention of React anywhere.
To whoever is working over there or ever going to work over there; i already feel sorry for you.
Coming back to work after 3 days long weekend is absolute tiring, why did work start, I was happy doing my side projects in the weekend kind-ish feeling...1
Then you have shit storm of work all week and friday night is for heavy drinking to feel f-ed up all weekend to reset yourself for next week...
Have you ever loved someone so badly that you cant forget about it even though she/he is retarded AF also no time to cringe anymore because you gotta complete this project at work before end of this weekend?2
I'm just off for a long weekend and hope I now find the time to read all the rants instead of just skimming them while I work.
My arms are dead, between a LAN party weekend and work + fun Python stuff on the side. I don't know it I can even type right now
When you boss makes a product decision in a meeting and never tells the team or me the lead dev. Then when it comes to an overview day he gets angry that I didn't know about these changes cause he never told us or put it in the sprint. So I have to spend my weekend refactoring the whole website so make it work the way he wants.....5
Have I said this before? The Google - everything and the Facebook - everything... is SO FUCKED. Seriously... why would anyone ever want to work somewhere with weekend-bootcamp- hackathon quality user interface? You have to be an "expert" in their exact interface of the month just to give them money.1
When your weekend starts with: ahh just gonna chill and test my apps background-fetch mode and realizing it dont work with async requests and silent push-notifications, spending the weekend adding syncronious requests for silent push. Why does apple hate developers??
Last weekend I started a project with a Angular front end and a WordPress backend.
The front end is for me so I can do the work faster. The backend is for the client that is slow at learning new technology. It's easiest to keep her WordPress setup
It's been a lot of fun setting up the jwt authentication but creating users has been a pain. I'm determined to work through it though.
Has anyone here else tried this? Any tips?4
Just spend the entire weekend preparing for, execution and cleaning up after a live stream.
When we'll, but holy shitfuck was it a stressful experience.
The guy in charge and with the vision pulled this one out of his ass, 12 hours before going live:
By the way, that system I talked about, where a moderator can pick comments from the YouTube chat, so that the hosts can look at the useful ones and choose to have them shown on the stream. Yeah, it doesn't work and you are better at programming than me, so you fix it.
Good bye sleep 😔
I just started Silicon Valley over the weekend, and now I’m hooked!
Now that Today is Monday, and I have to go back to work, I’m tempted to take 30 minute bathroom breaks so I can watch a few episodes!3
I need to implement a video hosting app in android. The work has to be completed till end of weekend. Need help guys. I am good at Java, but don't know much about android. I have been going through tutorials today, but didnt end up doing much. I don't know how to approach this problem, where you are unfamiliar with a tech and have to complete it in 3 days, 2 of them are holidays. What I need to do to complete it. Please help!3
Spent the entire weekend getting nothing done because my xorg won't work properly with my UK keyboard.
Turns out that the keymap was "gb" and not "uk", and because of the annoying utility used to set keymaps I didn't know...3
Ive gotten pretty good at web dev that most projects seem easy so i just tell myself i could probably finish the whole thing over next weekend if i spent the entire day coding.
I end up procrastinating my way till last minute, sometimes screw over deadlines, i just cant get myself to want to work on it. and i keep accepting projects for the money and throw myself in this guilt tripping loop every time.
what can i do to get myself to work on freelancing? (in my actual full time job im very productive coz mostly the project i work on is my passion but freelance is just too much of a drag!)9
Have to work over the weekend because the marketing department 4 weeks behind schedule on a task I need in order to finish mine. They just finished today (Friday). My deadline is on Monday. 😭 No sleep for me.
The weekend overtime pays pretty good though 🤔
Am a developer am never coming to work a weekend. My dog will be sick if I have been sick for the last 12 weeks.
On friday -
I got a feeling🎶
Tonights gonna be the last night for coding.
Fuck no, its a universal law there will be monday.
Life is good when you can't resist to continue doing work at home in the weekend, and are looking forward to when it's monday!1
Stupid Adobe Experience Manager only works in IE11.
I develop on MacBook pro.
I setup remote desktop on a windows computer at office to remote in so I can work on my MacBook remotely and deploy (manually via copy and paste into a text area called “HTML code”).
Everything is setup for the weekend.
Boom, it restarted itself and went to sleep after a Windows update...1
I keep getting emails from my programming teacher to "do more challenge programs!" Outside of the homework where I already have to do this shit
I think I'm gonna take this weekend to do the whole workbook they provided and see what they say then. Probably that I'm not learning properly.
I don't dislike this form of practical learning. I'm sure it's very representative of work programming, because the biggest challenge of these programs is mainly the bugs VB Net provides..
Just did some really satisfying refactoring. Much happier with my work now. Its a little cli app to poll M-bus devices and write the data to file if the user wants. Can scan the whole range, search for specific devices and VIFE codes, parse an input file for lots of the previous data and one or two other things.
How's everyone's else's weekend?
q1) if you had a weekend away from your work life, what would you do ?
q2) if you had 6 months away from your work life, what would you do?
for both questions , assume that you have a constant source of income, and usual incoming/outgoing cashflow(i e if you were earning $10/per month and spending $6/month , then its still happening the same) . everything is same except you have 8-9 free hours everyday
I just wanted to know/ get inspired by your thoughts on what are your wishes for a hypothetical free time and why9
When you feel like crap but your boss might make you work on the weekend, unpaid, if you take the day off. -_-4
One reason I hate working on hardware and prefer software. Spent all weekend trying to get this Canon photo printer to work with a raspberry pi for a photo booth project. Tried multiple cables, compiling the latest cups and gutenprint, etc. Only could get it to print via wifi. Finally, I go to the store and buy a new micro USB cable and it works right away. 😠2
THANKS UNITY FOR FUCKING CRASHING ON EVERY STARTUP!!
I have a big problem my Unity Engine Editor crashes on startup with an error never seen in the forum's! GOOD TO HAVE THANKS.... I really needed to work this weekend on my game but noooooo 😑😑😑 if the support can't help me I'm quit Unity and start working with C++ !
"Error: initializing license system"
OH FUCK OFF2
So last weekend I started digging into openhab2 and tried to integrate my Philips Hue lamps with the help of "Eclipse Smarthome Designer". But they refused to work. I checked the error log of openhab, I double checked my code then the tutorials then the official documentation. I did everything as described. After hours of try and error I tried to switch off the lamps with my openhab android app and bang it worked! Turns out: the integrated web browser of eclipse Smarthome Designer was sending broken data to openhab and the official apps did not...
Weekend is here ... Does it mean that work stops? By all means NO! And I'm cool with that ;-)
OS just crashed LOL.
For a while my social life was fuck all due to death marches and poorly managed projects. I’d be so exhausted by the time the weekend rolled around that I just didn’t want to do anything.
Sticking to a healthy work schedule and prioritising family and friends after an 8 hour workday did wonders.
On weekends I just tell me wife that I want to look at technology x for a couple of hours and we plan our day around that.
Also, finding social events I want to attend like DnD made a huge difference.
Finishing work on a Friday when cascade delete won't cascade delete in EF and throws foreign key issues. That's my weekend doomed to be spent obsessing over why.
PM needs experiments running this weekend. One set has a NullPointerException. Just told him to tell me when he's fixed it. He's been painful to work with, that at this point I have no empathy. Just cackling as it's not my problem until Monday! 😂
If I work at home this weekend to get some undersized stuff done by monday . Should I ask them to pay me extra?
Or we devs do not have those privileges?1
currently I'm feeling like a overheated gatling gun....
We'll finish at the weekend a year plus of work.
Should I be happy? Maybe.
But currently it's just frustration cause the whole week was satanic prep work.
Lots of fsicking boring shit, planning, migraine, connecting the dots.
I wish you'd get a nice dose of "fuck everything" medicine at the work for weeks like that.
Remember the chewing gum dispenser from your childhood?
Like that. ID card in. Fun pills out.
(If drugs were only without side effects and addiction.... )
A few weeks ago Vue 3 was released. I just started my first Vue 3 project, and while doing so I discovered Vite, which btw seems really nice. HRM is done before I've switched from my editor to the browser. I'm doing this on a three hour train taking me to Gothenburg where I'll meet up with a friend to work on our chess robot project all weekend. I'm so fucking stoked right now.1
So after a weekend where the first case in my city was discovered. So work has sent us all home to work. Been an interesting day so far.
We create home automation S/W and have it installed in the workplace.
For some reason the lights in the Help Desk/Testing department didn't turn on this morning. At the time our lead engineer was there too.
Rather then try sort it out themselves, they called R&D and got us to check the issue out. Turns out the lighting had been tripped over the weekend when the maintenance department was doing some work.
As we were investigating the issue they were just talking about their weekend so could of easily investigated it themselves!
Need to get some of your opinions about computer. I have always been using IBM/Lenovo or HP with Windows as operating system, due to work needs and policies. But, this weekend I purchased a new apple MacBook Air, and I want to know what you think about my choice. It is just for personal use, so I will continue to use my hp with win10 at work (needed for the erp system I'm consulting).
I choose MacBook Air as my personal computer because I think the hardware and chassi is a bit more premium to a pretty low cost, looking on hp or Lenovo with the same class of chassi and build is at least 150% more expensive. Let me know your comment :)2
Welp. I get into work to find there was a powercut at the weekend and 2 pc dead... I just moved the power plug on one and magically it starts. then when trying to boot the other one in safemode that suddenly starts working! There are times I just dont get computers or why they do the things they do....
good thing about working from home all weekend is that on Monday at work you don't have that shitty feeling "it's fucking Monday".
Plus, you meet some humans after 2 days in the cave2
Old co-worker from a help desk job messaged me asking if i could build him a program. Was gonna turn him down but decided to ask what it was before I did.
Actually like the idea of the project, seems like something I'd have done if I ever thought of it. It's not outside my skill level and I won't have to learn too much to pull it off how he wants. And it's something I can easily adapt for my own use cases later.
Also it's not for sole-ly him, it's for a TCG shop he volunteers at so technically I can list this as volunteer work (i think) if I ever need volunteer experience for anything
Alright guess I'm gonna work on the app this weekend and see what I can do.3
Mondays aren't the best time for me.
If it is a lazy weekend, this is the routine:
Sleep most of the morning in, wake up - do things, 10PM, think of some code to work on. 11PM, yeah, enough energy now - lets code!
The ransomware which has been affecting many places over the weekend is named perfectly for how I feel going into work this morning after being away for a week training wannacry.
For some reason properly starting an embedded tomcat and deploying a war is the fucking bane of my existence. Came back to work today from being off for the weekend and all of the sudden my webapp wont deploy. Tomcat just spinsup the app manager and intellij doesnt deploy the war...
Now that im typing this I bet that the context.xml is missing the docbase attr... gunna vpn in and check... literally ran the app fine friday night so not sure why this would have changed now. Will report back.1
Working from home stupidities...
It's last day before the weekend and I still felt like the weekend is already here. Totally forgot to start off for work while watching web series in the morning.
