A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -

Due to inspiration of giving up with windows being slow (performance wise) always connecting to MS severs (I have slow internet) so it’s noticeable when I can download quicker on a raspberry pi then on a laptop - both over wifi 🤷♂️
And burning a fucking boot DVD for Ubuntu takes 3 fucking DVDs at 2.4x speed - before getting a successful boot disk 😞

I saw a quote maybe 2 weeks after I signed up in this Heaven, I can't (read "I'm too lazy to") find the quote but some guy was lowkey panicking about the fact that all his friends were "currently building X, almost finishing to dev Y", while all he ever did was a small project like "yeeey, I can do something with my 10 fingers"
This rant was interesting, but the top comment kind of marked me, if I remember well, it said something like "All I read is 'doing' and 'almost finished', while you 'did'. I would trust you over these guys".
From this day, while I worked on two side projects, there was always a moment where I thought about this sentence.
Today, I finished one of my side projects. I DID it.

Quarantine and unemployment gave me opportunities to do side projects, here is another one I’ve done recently and I think you guys will like it
It is an image mosaic that preserves features based on color gradient, and tries to use as many photos as possible instead of just repeatedly using same picture over and over.

Working on a side gig - an online clothing store - just finished implementing the cart logic, need to set up both PayPal and mobile money payments plus make sure the whole UI is responsive - fucking images! This is all needed by tomorrow... Bit of a shameless plug but...
I've been making Crypton.sh as my side project for the past couple of months and it's now ready for public consumption. Crypton.sh is a secure and encrypted SMS messaging solution in the cloud, with its original purpose to be a 2FA mobile number that cannot be stolen like a SIM card can be, the idea came about when someone I knew has their SIM card stolen via a SIM card swap scam (https://bbc.co.uk/news/...).
Originally it came about as that idea but grew into something bigger, now everything is encrypted and you can also have conversations with other people, but I'm testing things from time to time and more can follow. Crypton.sh makes sure that you can no longer worry about your SIM card being stolen by malicious hackers, or having a second account on Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, Google and others.

I started a side project: a small app for my gf and me.
In the end it should consist of different features I call modules. Right now there is only one module that suggests a movie to watch from our watchlist.

How do you deal with a problem that feels completely over your head? I want to develop side projects but sometimes I have trouble starting/continuing when I feel like I can’t find a solution after hours of research.

Currently, I'm working around 8 hours a day and afterwards I can't really think about getting on the PC as I know that I will burn out eventually and end up messing up the following work day.

Calling all bored js devs...
So I just noticed that rantBlock is the most ++'ed collab on devRant! This was totally unexpected since it was just another proof of concept of a random idea I had while bored.
The problem is I do not have time in the next few months to develop it further. I would love to see it ported to uBlock and officially released on the chrome/mozilla/microsoft stores so I am posting an open invitation for devRanters to take it over.
Realistically though while the collab is popular on devRant the repo was not cloned enough times to even show - it only had one watcher and 7 stars so I am not sure if it will get much usage once released, but I promise to download it.
Even with that in mind it's a pretty fun side project if your into ad blocking (ad how it works) and browser extensions for the holidays and you have a community of devs to get feedback from.

I'm a developer, but also a father of 2 kids. I love spending time with them, but sometimes I also like to work on my side projects. And besides that, after a long day of work, even if I have spare time, I also like to lay down on the couch and watch Netflix.

One of the online education tools my high school used had client-side validation for test answers
As if that wasn't bad enough, the correct answers were literally marked by the CSS class 'correct', meaning that any idiot who could figure out how to open the devtools could see the correct answers
Thankfully, this program was ditched before it was used for anything major2 -

In june 2018 I am going to get my software developer diploma! I am very excited about it. But for now the workload is just getting higher and higher.

Here's a peek at the current state of the service that I'm developing as a side project(plenty of time meanwhile searching for job).
It's a renting service, more automated and with more(and better, imo) search criterias. By automated I mean that I don't have to scroll through search results half backed with poor filters. You create a search, the search will iterate as soon as there is process power in the queue of the searches, and when it's done it will notify you(in different ways(communication channels) and different times, all setup by the user)
.NET Core 2 is the reference framework for the backend; HTML5,Razor, SCSS,JS for front-end.

For me side projects have been things I'll make to do something that others will use. Some people call it innovation, some call it side business. But that's how i look at side projects. So the points below are more to do with entrepreneurial experiences.
1. If there are more people involved, ensure that there is work for everybody (also level of commitment is tested by how much they put in). Also have as varied set of skills as possible. So that areas are well defined in terms of scope of work and areas of expertise.
2. Put in some money. Money is super glue. It will ensure that you're committed to the thing. Things change when decent amount of money is involved. You're invested, as may be others.
3. Learn something as an intention. This has nothing to do with the learnings you'll get on the way. This one seems obvious, but nevertheless needs to be said.
4. Set timelines and deadlines. Ask someone else to check on whether you're keeping on to your deadlines or not.
5. Don't go live without proper testing.
6. Make something you feel strongly about. The path will be exciting and clear.
7. Talk to people to get their feedback on everything. You may not like what's told to you. Listen dispassionately. Absorb everything. Feel miserable. But listen and think about it after sleeping over it.
8. Continuation of above point. Talk to varied set of people in terms of backgrounds. You would be surprised as to how differently people think.
9. Ask for help when stuck. Kill your ego and be vulnerable.
10. Check out what's already available. What value are you adding. And make it! -

I actually feel accomplished because I'm starting to turn one of my side projects into a real project, even if it isn't popular.
I have a discord bot (exclusive to one server, so more of a discord server) that I have been working on for a while with a couple minigames, like connect 4, crossword, blackjack, etc.
It started off very small, but now I see the project really exploding in size. I have a bona fide testing environment, website with domain and HTTPS with sitemap and everything submitted to google, unit tests, and the scope keeps expanding.
I am continuing to only add value, but have legitimate plans to try and make some income from it if things go smoothly.
Now I just need more than 10 users.2 -

TLDR, i am not performing as I used to in my job before i made my side hussle and idk if i should do anything about it.
every since covid started and companies started laying off people, I started realizing im in danger when no company was able to match my current salary, and the ones that do would, make me do a hunger games hackerrank competition with thousands of other people which I don't really wanna take part of..
My company even laid off a lot of people due to budget cuts a while back and i didn't feel secure at all, and knowing that i might end up with less salary should i get fired and settle for the next company that accepts me, kinda made me lose any trust i had for the whole being an employee thing... I have financial goals i want to meet and depending on this one company to not fire me is scary...
I registered a tech company and hoped I could take on some high budget projects, got nothing the first year but slowly i started getting some projects and now im hiring contractors to help with projects and its going great and im really happy and excited about it.
But i often need to manage said contractors, have calls with clients and even do some coding myself. Some of that i end up having to do in secret in my company time... we work in a big co-working space so i get to sneak into a meeting booth and do all that.
my manager lives in another country and basically im in a situation where i can get away with it without anyone noticing.
However, I used to be one of the top contributors in the company. I used to finish a butt load of tasks every day and i ended up being promoted to manager, but i still get some coding tasks. But generally, if it weren't for my side hussle i would still be a top contributor and shine like i used to, but now i mostly do what is expected on me, and im afraid someone would ask me at some point why im not as productive as I used to be.
nobody asked me anything but i just feel kinda guilty and miss having the one job to focus on and taking credit for a lot of things and helping everyone, but at the same time i dont trust that the company cares about me enough to give me any guarantees or stocks or bonuses so i feel i need to keep growing my side hussle to have a safety net..

In a real-time multiplayer competitive game where you control a vehicle, is it feasible to simulate the whole thing on server side, such that the client only sends controls and receives sensor results? I mean like the client doesn't even know its own precise rotation, just the readings of a gyroscope and an accelerometer which are both susceptible to errors, and deduces the "down" direction from those two and approximate control forces. This would both solve hacking (writing a good robot is just as challenging) and lead to fun results like an attitude indicator going crazy from a gust of wind.14

I feel I need to write some side project summary somewhere.
So here it is about 3 months later:
- deleted 90% of code I created during last 3 months
- rewrote backed 5 times
- 200 lines POC still waiting to put in any meaningful architecture on frontend
- frontend part after aurelia, next, gatsby, react I think it would be vue powered by nuxtjs
- forced myself to buy food for whole week and don’t go out (except go running ) before I finish at least what I wrote on whiteboard
Now some positive news:
- there is not much left to be fucked up, removed or unnecessary added
- I think I got a plan
- this is probably first side project that makes me happy for such long time
- there is some probability it would help people and this is what I want to do in my life
Most important is that I know it would take at least half a year to do basic version of it and I don’t care.

Why isn't it enough to develop a tool that even the end user likes? So many challenges to get it through to the right people.
I launched this project in January. Didn't have anything to do for the year before when I got back home from my internship. So made this lol.

Just finished my first microservice project. I'm so happy that I was able to do that hardest thing I ever did. It's just a side project but I think it will do well on my cv as I will be finishing university next year.
Just wanted to share this with you guys as all the rants really helped me to calm down when I was wrecking my head over some weird bugs.4 -
I'm having the dawning realization, reading the utf specification and thinking "parsing the data files isn't too hard..." that the little side project on a side project on a side project isn't going to be finished until like, Christmas.

Been thinking about taking up server-side programming (I'm mobile).
Any tips?
Should I go with something like node.js, which I'm a bit familiar with and is quite popular or should I try another language/platform? Maybe Rust (given it's similar to Swift) or even Swift itself.
Any good resources (tutorials, guides, etc.) would be much appreciated, especially if they focus on security.

I just started a new job where in my onboarding, I’m supposed to learn typescript and react. I am also supposed to gain some knowledge of databases. Since I am so new, I don’t really have any meetings. I see my manager maybe 2x a day. I’ve been using my time at work to learn these technologies.
I learn best by doing projects. I recently built a bot that scrapes media off of one site and posts it on another site. I was thinking I could create a react front end in typescript for the bit. I would also add a database to my project (the model for the front end) which contains the post history of the bot.
Would that be appropriate for work? I thought it would be good project to help me learn react. However, I am new to the “corporate” world and I feel like my manager won’t want me to waste company time on my side project.
The only other responsibilities I have are reviewing the source code and watching some onboarding videos6 -

Just started a side project, helping a friend make his Android app more stable and add a couple more features. We'll release the sources sometime later.
Gotta say, his code is just terrible. And it runs on top of some code written by someone else, and that's even worse.
But I don't know how I got the motivation to spend the whole Saturday cleaning it up, fixing warnings, making abstractions, extracting features to separate classes, converting some stuff to Kotlin, even adding a couple coroutines. It felt good fixing bad code.
Maybe because I have some coding freedom I kinda miss at work.
Maybe because the project is not that big.
Maybe because I know the guy has many skills, coding is just not one of them.
Maybe because that project has some cool in it I can't even describe.
Maybe because that's entirely within my skills but challenging enough to have fun working on it.
Or maybe is just the mood of the moment, and in a week or so I'll lose all the motivation, as it happened too many times.

I currently develop an angular 5 frontend application as side project. The serverside JSON RESTful application is already finished.
So the bakcend (should) not be a problem...
But angular can be a real cunt. Sometimes the request work, sometimes not. Thank you OPTIONS HEADER ^^

Holidays are coming and I have a little time to spend on side projects that I left behind. The problem is that I have not enough time for all of them and I really can't choose one.

We're a grew guys developing an application that requires a server to orchestrate everything. We'd like to make everything within this project open source. Does anyone have any experience with open sourcing server side code which will interface with OAuth APIs and what not? How do you go about managing deploys? I'm mostly concerned with security here.8

If they started with tutorials but did something different is this okay? I also want to start something small, so I can stick with it, but I don't want it to be too small or lack complexity. When I bought something second hand, I had a small chat with them and got to know that they need a new website for their small business. They told me they paid 800€ to an agency that didn't deliver anything - I suppose there's some misunderstanding but I don't wanna get involved in that).
I told them I could do it, but it's not really my field and I'm not sure if I want the trouble. I made clear I'd expect to be paid, I'd need to think about the amount..
Requirements should simple enough, static website can do. Nothing fancy really. They might even be able to DIY with a shitty website builder.. Needs to be hosted and working email. One red flag is the current situation regarding domain ownership because the former maintainer died...
Anyway I suppose this could be a nice side gig for beer money, with the initial setup paid decently plus a yearly fee for maintenance/hosting.
I don't wanna rip them off but also I don't wanna work a second job for pennies.. idk something like 500€ once + 150€/year would probably be ok? (incl. costs for domain/hosting/email)13 -

Does anyone know of any websites that have project ideas with requirements/user stories. I generally get side tracked if I sit down and just build something. There are a few full stack projects on freecodecamp with user stories which made me wonder if there are any other similar sites.2 -
Where do you find inspiration for side projects?
Years ago I was full of ideas, and I've had the chance to explore a lot and build experience. I've even built a few successful projects.
But now, between work and university, it seems that my creative thinking is completely shut down.
The few ideas that come to my mind are useless or so trivial that someone else did them already.

I'm still trying, after many months to pick something to wrap my head around on in my free/boring time.
I wanted to learn some new language, or make a small app for my household, but as soon as I open a book, a doc page or just some tutorial I get nauseated by the code, the chapters, the effort I need to go through everything once again. It's just becoming boring and pointless unless I get paid for it.
I blame my last burnout, but it was more than 2 years ago ffs, I'm starting to think this is just an excuse.

For a side project I identified the need for RPC (originally over Websocket but can be extended to WebRTC/DTLS) that supports
- JSON-serializable values
- Promises
- MessagePorts (including shortcut detection for ports that are passed back on a different route)
- async functions
I have ideas for all of these and this is an exciting prospective library, but it's also major scope bloat that will prevent me from ever finishing the project that depends on it.
Would you be interested in such a library if it ever got built?3 -

I’ve been thinking of making a magic Mirror lately as a side project. I know that they are traditionally made with TVs or computer monitors but I don’t have the space to make a mirror that big. I have a bunch of old Amazon kindles and android phones that I thought would be good to use instead (even though they all have cracked screens). I want the reflective aspect and the touch screen aspect. I think the hardest part is figuring out how to get whatever device that is behind the glass to register touch events on the glass. Any ideas or recommendations? Anybody done anything similar?
