BAM! It's official. The Dutch people have voted against the new surveillance law!
It's about 49 percent against vs 46 percent in favor and the other part voted blank.
I'm happy as fuck!25 -
Tips for people new to programming
1. Start counting from zero
2. Trees are upside down, root's probably at the top
3. Warnings are usual, go rogue!
What more? 😂34 -
'Normal' people when they get a new phone:
- install whatsapp
- install Facebook (or other social media)
- install regular email app
Me:
- Root phone
- Install app ops
- Install Signal
- Install encrypted email services' app
- Install firewall
- Install devRant

So I've got a Linux related job (or, starting at monday). When people ask me what my new position is called, I'll of course tell! Well, I stutter sometimes in my native language. Especially with the letter L.
"so what's your new position?"
"Lllllll-lllll-llllllllllllllllllll"
*mother of god*
"lllllllllllllllllllllll-llllllllllllll*
*OH FFS*
"Llllllllllll-llllllllllllllllllll-lllllllinux support engineer!"
*FUCKING FINALLY!*
"Hey man, you got a new job I heard, what's your new position?"
*please work*
"Lllllllllll-lllllllllllllllll-llllllllllllllllllllll*
*MOTHERFUCKER*
"Lllllllll-lllllllllllllllllllinux support engineer!"
"ey dude, what's your new position? Heard you got a new job!"
*alright let's do this better*
"gonna do stuff with servers and customer service!"
"Ah cool! What system do they run on their servers?"
No. 😡28 -
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for waiting for this new release of avatar items! We have new pets, new computers, new eye wear, some fun shirts and a special treat for our #1 ranter @linuxxx. The required ++ pts for these are a little higher than normal to reward the dedicated people who have helped support and build this community over the last few years. Thank you all!33

Apple just announced a new 6k monitor. The stand for it is NOT included and will cost $1000.
This snapshot of the presentation is meme-worthy.
...People will still buy it.31 -
I did get a raise but we also hired like 5 new people... But I still do the same amount of work... Which was already too much...11

We hired a new team lead. On his first day he wore green leather elf shoes. Yeah, the pointy kind.
He also ended up being one of my favorite people ever, but also one of the weirdest.3 -
Apple at WWDC 2018.

Saying yes to people who want a website for $100.
I've learned my lesson, all brand new websites now start at $1000.9 -
My new year's resolution:
- Learn more Java
- Build a web server with Java
- Make a 3D game with no frameworks in Java
- Make a simple Android app with java
- Try JavaOS
- Tell people I know Java14 -
Fuck yeah.
Last year our government voted out new mass surveillance law through like it was nothing AND with a huge amount of votes in favor and hardly any against. (remember that the government is *supposed* to represent the people of the country)
A few students made a referendum happen, 48 percent of our people came to vote for this.
The first exit poll results are about 50/50!
I'm happy as fuck, damn!
Sorry for this slightly political posts and if this entirely violates all terms, I'll remove it. I thought this fits, though, because of what this new law.15 -
Old people to new people -
"Welcome to devRant"
"Enjoy your stay"
🤔
I think, do some people plan to be a guest and leave devRant after sometime?
I'm here to stay.
Maybe, it should be
"Welcome to devRant, now you're stuck here..." 😈4 -
Sometimes when I meet new people and they ask "What is your job?" I want to answer "I'm a plumber" 😄
Because I'm so sick of reinstalling Windows on people's laptop's and other shit like that 😔10 -
I hate it when people say they want to "GET a new girlfriend"...
Shouldn't it be "FIND a new girlfriend"?
I mean you can't just go into the supermarket and get some butter, milk and a new girlfriend. You can't buy them. By saying that, you seem to me as if you're treating women as objects. I know it's technically possible to buy a girlfriend, but that's prostitution.
I think that "GET a new girlfriend" just doesn't sound right...
Your opinions?38 -
Real university assignment:
"Write an AI to win this 2player game, restrictions: you cannot save to a file and every turn is a new run of the program."
And then people ask me why do i keep saying university is useless.27 -
Hi, am new so i want to say hello!
Like this place and their people so i decide to create an account :D
Sorry for my english. Am on the way to improve it.33 -
Picked this up the other day. Hope it's as good as people have been telling me.
If so, then here begins a new journey for me to better code.11 -
Start a new job.
It is amazing.
What, you will not pay my JetBrains? Ugh... cheap boss.
Do you call this scrum?
Now I need to build this dumbass feature.
Wait, all the seasoned people are leaving?
Why did I choose this place at first?
Linkedin.
Interview.
This sounds awesome.
Good salary.
Bye guys.
Start a new job...8 -
Keeping up with new JS frameworks is like keeping up with celebrity gossip. It really isn't useful on it's own but you can talk to other people about it and be perceived as woke.9

Since my last update, I got a new screen. We reorganised the office, so I got a new spot in the office (corner with no one behind me). Got a monitor stand.
I’m costing the Norwegian people so much. All this stuff I request, is financed by the tax kroner.15 -
Was working in small startup with great people on new projects, but for very low salary and shitty conditions.
Changed job to big company with nice salary and great conditions, but people are assholes and have to work on legacy stuff mostly.
Guess you can't have everything.1 -
First day at new job yesterday, and it was really enjoyable, it's nice to be at a place that is actually competent at software development. I actually have people I can turn to who are tons more experienced than me.
Aside from the usual orienteering, I spent my time examining their existing systems and wrapping my head around the project I'll be working on for my trial period.
People seem friendly, coffee is good, they know what they're doing, willing to experiment and try new things, and I will get a free mac book pro as an employee.
Hope I get this.3 -

Based on how many people are violently upset at Apple for removing a 60 year old piece of technology from their phones I'm guessing this is the ideal types of ports for some people. Because why try something new when you can stick to legacy technology?40

Manager: We have a new equity survey from HR that is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY. Anyone who doesn’t fill it out will be severely reprimanded for being against diversity in the workplace. We need this data in order to ensure we have the ABSOLUTELY EXACT ratio of EVERY minority so that we can show the people that we do not discriminate against ANYBODY for ANYTHING. One of the problems with hiring new people is that most people we want to hire turn out to be white and we are absolutely not allowed to hire any more white people because we are over the quota for white people. Now there’s a loophole to this, if that white person belongs to some sub-minority like they are muslim or gay or something like that it’s totally cool and we can show people we don’t discriminate on these things when making employment decisions!
Dev: That’s…not wh—

Ah the wonders of working with non-technical people. 😤
I had a logistical problem. The SSD on my laptop crashed.
Me: No biggie just request new one.
Them: Sorry we don't have any on stock.
Me:Okey then give me a new laptop.
Them:Ok fine here you go.
Me:I specifically required 16 GB of RAM.
Them: ok here is an extra 8gb
Me: I need DDR 4 not DDR3
Them: don't have any. We will restock shortly.
A couple a days later a colleague requested 8gb DDR3 and got DDR 4.
The fuck is wrong with people. Can you not read?🤔🙄1 -

Hello there! I’m back from the /dev/null to rant about how my teacher marked the “the new C# syntax” as a mistake.
I’m really sorry, but this “new feature” is a thing since 2015 - back then, iPhone 6s got released, Barack Obama was still the US president and the only Corona people cared about was the beer.8 -
I don't know if it's the new generation of programmers or what but it irritates me how people recommend JavaScript/Node for solving almost any type of problem these days. JavaScript is nice, but come on...12

A lot of people woke up "early" today (7:30am) just to preorder the new Xbox and brag about it...

People know that things are getting serious when you open up a new twitter account for your personal project.4

As you start managing people, you understand why you read job listings requiring attributes like "Passionate about creating things" or anything like that.
When you see people not proactive and just lazy in a group, and you let them in, it's really disappointing. It makes you feel like you have to put everyone out, do it all again with new people, and pay attention to what gave them away the first time but you didn't know yet.
Next time I'm gonna look for people "passionate" about what they do and "interested in making great projects".7 -
I maintain a service that people are billed yearly for. A bunch of users just requested a new feature that will require me to build a completely new backend and change a bunch of things that will require a full rewrite of a couple different aspects of the service. I'm both excited and scared. Wish me luck.5

The year is 2030. Apple have attached cameras to their new glasses models.

So, 2 weeks ago I started my new job at a company I had my eye on for almost a year, feeling super blessed because after leaving my previous job with such a toxic work environment, it is so refreshing to be around new people who actually value you. I’m so excited to learn new skills and push myself towards the role I was dreaming of since university. :-)3

Hit udemy, Google for any new technologies, attend large conferences, and simply spend 30 mins to an hour each day coding in anything new - and of interest.
I have to keep up with the young people, to keep my job/career alive, heh.1 -
Stay curious and open-minded. If you hear something new take some 5-10 min and Google it. You will surprise much people even if you know just basics.
And if you're a fast learner, be aware, some people will be intimidated and try to oust you. But stay positive! -
I hate backendphobia! It feels like so common nowadays. People scare other people with backend being too hard and stuff, and that feeling of scariness is something that infects lot of people. Please stop fearing the backend!
Yes, some backend stuff can be hard, but there's no good reason to fear it. I just hate it when I go to a new team and they all seem to be backendphobics idiots. I've build enough backends to not give in to the fear, pls stop scaring people.11 -
An online community I've been part of for years has seen a lot of popularity/hate overnight due to a new policy. The influx of new people who want nothing to do with us but just drop by to troll and be cunts is impressive. Also, a significant amount of bots. I want my online home back :( I'm for the new policy and very much against these new clowns who don't really have any reason to be on our page. Before anyone yells gatekeeping, it's a site about knitting and crochet. Why would you go there if you don't know either craft and have no desire to learn or talk about those? So disappointed. I hope it brought new crafters in and that the trolls will go away soon. It's been such a nice place for so long with barely any idiots because it was reasonably small.. And now look at this mess. I logged in to 20 friend requests from people I don't know and am almost certain aren't real people.
Why is it so hard for humans to accept that some people may disagree with them and that's okay?16 -
What happened to the warm welcome that new users received back in the day? Now when someone posts their first rant people bash on details and give them no chance. I remember posting half-dumb rants, but no one gave me shit for that. It takes time to grow into a community, you can't just expect people to behave identically to the rest. Makes me a bit disappointed to be fair.9
-
When your new team-members don't commit their code end of day Friday and you end up working the whole holiday weekend to fix their shitty work while they're away for the week....
Joys of being a team-lead..1 -
!rant, but some kind of story
I work as a lead dev on a gmod server of a pretty big german community. With the fun stuff, there come the duty‘s to help Jr. Devs or even help people get into Developing. The part, where you help junior devs is always fun, but what I find interesting is the part where you help people learn coding. It’s not easy work, but you learn more every “lesson”. I catch myself exploring and learning something new, even if I know the topic. For me it’s a new journey every time.
Not sure if there are many people who can relate but I just wanted to tell my side on it.1 -
I kinda feel like people trying to call Facebook "Meta" is just as awkward as people trying to use correct pronouns when a person announces that now their pronouns changed.
A person, however, deserves to be understood.
Meanwhile, Meta is just Facebook. A new name won't solve that shit pile of ethical problems and sketchy business practices that just keeps growing.6 -
The most common mistake people do is trying to learn some complex cutting-edge technology from scratch. Cutting-edge technology is just combining old technology in new ways to solve new problems. To learn it, first learn existing technology. Existing technology is here to stay, it's well-explained, and it's usually much simpler to understand. Then the rest will just click.7

I still can't get it why people looks at IT people as lowlife. If you need a new computer in your office I can get the right spec and help you to buy it. But moving the computer table is not my job 😠1

I honestly do not understand why people speak so badly about PHP(that's the general vibe I am getting from all these different platforms) or maybe it's because I am still new at it I am yet to find out the reason.27

Been stuck with a fucking 13mbit internet connection shared between three people for the past seven years. Lived cheap in a nice location, so it was worth it, still frustrating af. Finally moved, new city, new place, new internet. Currently sitting on 300mbit at home. Downloaded update for car nav, 25gb, took about 15 minutes, where it would previously have taken all day. Random rant: You should always look for a new job, even after landing a good(seemingly) one. It keeps you on edge and synchronized with the market.
Employers also should not shun people who are looking for new job, if they somehow find out. A developer who looks for a job, gets offer but decide to stay is better than who lost his/her/xir fire.3 -
Tell people you know how to code - they always have nice ideas for "new and innovative" apps and want you to code for them ;D3
-
1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.
That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.
2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.
That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.
3. Trust nothing that you see.
Bugs are everywhere
4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.
When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.
Good luck -
So this is what I understand from reading about Deno:
"We couldn't improve the Node.js platform because so many people already use it, so we made a new platform that no one will use so we could keep improving it forever!"3 -
Me coding and researching to fix new things everyday and people come to me saying:

Why people are saying Python is an easy language? I mean yes, if you write c/java code with python it may seem easy, but writing proper python code, in a pythonic way is not so easy.
SO DON'T TELL PEOPLE THAT'S IT EASY LANGUAGE because new commers later they come with absurd code and ask people to fix it.7 -
Recently thanks to Whatsapp I've discovered a new pet peeve:
People pressing "send" after finishing a sentence (at best) instead of making new lines, resulting in around 5 new messages received at lightning speed.
Not to mention, they keep on going while I am trying to reply, losing my concentration in the process! 😡5 -

The above link is an article about a new Amazon service allowing for purchased products to be placed inside your home. How does this work? With a "smart" lock.
When will people learn that the more technology they have, the more hackable they are? It'll only be a matter of time before people learn how to break these locks, leaving your house left unprotected.2 -
Have you ever gotten so frustrated with coding and dealing with constant churn and issues and stupid people that you just wanna burn it all down and start a whole new career in a completely different field?7

Hacktoberfest has started today.

My new team mates type in the date and time of commit on their commit messages and maintain code only on master branch. Some people deserve have their write access revoked.2

Hey devRanters 😁
I've recently done a Cerebro extension that allow people to search on devRant.
It's really new and not yet fully optimized. (also not on NPM yet)
But if some people want to use it before its "published" version, it's here:

Love how people are getting excited about the new Samsung devices and I'm here excited for the Nokia 8.1 and considering selling my pixel 2 XL and downgrading to it...

For shit's sake, data stream processing really is only for people with high throughput looking to do transformations on their data; not for people aggregating <10Gb/day of data.
Fuck me DSP is going to be the new buzzword of 2020 and I'm not looking forward to it. I've already got stakeholders wondering if we can integrate it when we dont have the need, nor the resources or funds.10 -

Started a new job at a big firm (previously came from a startup). Both do "scrum". Still have my mind blown because at the new job, we have people join the standup of which NOBODY in the team knows what their role is on the product...
Does this happen often in big corporates?5 -
Developers are the only people that knock off for work at 8pm, and at 7am your project manager wants to see something new on where you left off. What happened to fairness?

Wow!!!! After a very short period of time (since March), the startup I am at is finally finalizing an acquisition. I got my offer letter today from the new, much bigger company.

@dfox just listened to episode 1 of podcast. It was great, so good to listen to passionate people like DHH.

I've actually really enjoyed getting to interview people. Mostly because I'm given the freedom to ask reasonable questions. At this point, my favorite is asking fresh grads to come up with requirements to make their favorite portfolio bit production-ready.
I want a list of things you need to fix because they're duct tape and bubblegum, but a lot of people sit there with passwords in plaintext and suggest new features. -
Problem with people asking us to repair things is that sometimes we don t know how to do it.
It's always closed source or you need to be aquainted with a weird new app/social network you never used. -
*opens up any form of internet page*
Oh look... Another group of people using memojis as their profile picture complaining about slacks new logo and touting their own design...
*Opens up another page*
Oh look same fucking thing
*Closes browser and opens letter to reveal random slack logo*
Can everyone just shit the fuck up about the new logo... Please...3 -
got a new macbookpro with my new job. awesome. but no usb port so i need a dongle to use my good mouse.
my solution: pickup the dongle myself from down the street and expense it
company solution: order it through complicated website, wait for 3 people to approve it, and wait 4+ weeks for it to come in (still waiting) -
Starting off with my internship today with a very passionate bunch of people! Relatively new but experienced startup. Wish me luck! 🙂

Apple denies jelly scroll problem on new iPads: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/...
This is nothing new: Steve Jobs himself told people to “just avoid holding iPhone 4 that way” in response to people being mad because iPhone 4 lost connection.
Apple is the WORST in handling user feedback, on par of Microsoft sponsoring concentration camps for immigrants (https://github.com/drop-ice). Though I still stand by my words of Apple products being engineering marvels.28 -
What does Linux and web development have in common. New distros and framework popping up everyday.
What is wrong with people, creating distros and web framework for dumb reason. When they can contribute to to existing distro/framework to make it better.8 -
Heard someone say they don't celebrate their birthday nor new years the traditional way. It made me curious, i asked and she said.

Very interesting and i can respect that :) soo mamy people with beautiful minds.3 -

Seeing CAT5 Cables sold as CAT8 cables makes me think how many non techies have been scammed and don't even know it.
Like when apple marketed the 3rd gen PoS iPad as the new iPad and people starting for years after selling new ipads that were anything but.

I don't understand why people are so preoccupied with new languages and scared to try them out. At least half of the language features are a rehash of the same ideas and the other half are 2-3 ideas. Seriously. I find it distasteful that people in my co are so scared of learning new shit. NEED To GTFO.3

Suggestions @dfox :
What about profile achievements?
10/100/1000 total +1s
Invent a new metric unit: rants/week
Can @localhost get a gold star or something on his profile for first to 1000?
Silver stars for people who gave an idea that was impliemented
Bronze star for people who have gotten a stress ball

Finally! The most incompetent C-level has decided to leave the company. He did fire most of the old dev team & a lot of other people and employed people he already knew.
I think he did fire around 20-25 people and hired new people or people he know. Our company cosists of 40 employees :D1 -

Thankfully I've been lucky enough to work with many brilliant people. The best being the ones who are enthusiastic about sharing tips, tricks and helpful advice to new people. Little pieces of advice from old colleagues have followed me throughout my career, for sure.
By contrast, people who sit in a dark corner, bemoaning everything and being completely unwilling to help can have enough negative impact to cause talented people to leave. -

Migrating our application to a new environment with a new database to meet company's new standards, spend weeks getting everything around. Someone not submitting the DNS change request they said they submitted a week ago is preventing us from being done, 15 hours and counting waiting for other people. smh, we desperately need to move to DevOps.

So people are getting new jobs left and right, and there are several others looking for new jobs including me...
Well... now the CIO is following people around the office and watching them walk to their car and stuff. To me this just makes the situation worse.
If he's so worries about people leaving then why doesn't he hire people instead of trying drive everyone out? -
Some people chase likes, shares, or comments on social media... I just chase those little GitHub squares that turn green with new activity.1

someone asks me : What do people not tell you about being a software engineer?
So the thing is , No one actually knows what they’re talking about.
See, the thing about building software is that usually you are inventing something.
Not in a pretentious way. I don’t mean “inventing something” as in inventing the light bulb, but I mean making something new that someone else hasn’t built before (well, hopefully — if you’re building something someone else already built, then you might be doing it wrong).
Because of this, people are usually just coming up with solutions based on what they think will work.
And that’s about the best you can do. Sure, the more experience you have, the more you can recognize certain patterns, or lay certain architectural foundations, but you’re mostly just coming up with something new. Maybe not 100% new, maybe some sort of slightly different thing than another thing that exists, but it’s still new.
So yeah, no one knows what they’re talking about. You’ll sit in meetings, with people talking about all kinds of smart-sounding stuff. Most people are trying their best to understand and play catch-up. No one wants to be the dumb one. People try to make it a science as much as possible, but if you really wanna be honest, people are just trying stuff and seeing if it works.
It’s not a bad thing. That’s just the nature of software development.6 -

I just moved into a new house that I share with some people and these people have a cat. I was quietly watching videos when the cat decided she wanted to be petted, so, logically, she stepped into my keyboard and trackpad and somehow managed to mute the video, restart it and exit full screen.
I must remember to close the door when I'm doing anything important.1 -
Hey, fellow devranters!

Any heuristics on using new JS/CSS features?
I thought of waiting 2 years, but I just saw an article that recommended waiting 6 months.
Another factor could be covered percentage, based on caniuse. 98%+ is the coverage of things we can all agree we can use, so is 95%+ enough for new features? 90%+ (so 1 in 10 people wouldn't get the expected experience)?5 -
About #wk97, many trends aren't new things for example IoT is a evolution of Ubiquitous computing, NoSQL remember me xml database and oo database; but de good part is that are people improving this things and it's amazing :)

So if people could just stop point out there are all these JavaScript frameworks out there. And yes, we know there are new JavaScript frameworks released every day. The feeling you get when the people in charge of packaging and installation of the product can't give you an answer to the question: "How is the product packaged, so I can include the new features?"

You should not think of yourself as a person as much as a concept.
For example, I think I grew out of my antigermanist phase. German people are fine.
My new concept is "let's do anal", a line of t-shirt.

How is your experience using twitter to follow tech community ? i'm tired of seeing tech influencers trying to promote tech stacks to attract sponsors and get some pocket money + people sharing garbage tweets so they can grow their followers base + people/companies trying to overengineering even small things so they appear cool, twitter become the new instagram for developers1
