Storytime!
Manager: Hey fullstackchris, the maps widget on our app stopped working recently...
Dev: (Skeptical, little did he know) Sigh... probably didn't raise quota or something stupid... Logs on to google cloud console to check it out...
Google Dashboard: Your bill.... $5,197 (!!!!!!) Payment method declined (you think?!)
Dev: 😱 WTF!?!?!! (Calls managers) Uh, we have HUGE problem, charges for $5000+ in our google account, did you guys remove the quota limits or not see any limit reached warnings!?
Managers: Uh, we didn't even know that an API could cost money, besides, we never check that email account!
Dev: 🤦♂️ yeah obviously you get charged, especially when there have literally been millions of requests. Anyway, the bigger question is where or how our key got leaked. Somewhat started hammering one of the google APIs with one of our keys (Proceeds to hunt for usages of said API key in the codebase)
Dev: (sweating 😰) did I expose an API key somewhere? Man, I hope it's not my fault...
Terminal: grep results in, CMS codebase!
Dev: ah, what do we have here, app.config, seems fine.... wait, why did they expose it to a PUBLIC endpoint?!
Long story short:
The previous consulting goons put our Angular CMS JSON config on a publicly accessible endpoint.
WITH A GOOGLE MAPS API KEY.
JUST CHILLING IN PLAINTEXT.
Though I'm relieved it wasn't my fault, my faith in humanity is still somewhat diminished. 🤷♂️
Oh, and it's only Monday. 😎

Business: we need feature x in two
Days, highly urgent!
Me: fine, here’s a shitty implementation we can live with until you decide how to Actually make this work in the future.
2 days pass...
Me: where’s the content for feature x?
Business: awaiting approval
5 more days pass...
Me: I’m guessing this super urgent request wasn’t needed after all?
Business: it’s still awaiting approval
Me: so... I’ll just go and remove this feature, and revisit when its actually needed.
Business: no, it’s needed now, we are just waiting on approval
Me: 🤷♂️
Duck my life sometimes.
I could have built a full fledged system of this shitty hack job instead in the time taken to approve a useless piece of content.6 -
Dear Australian Government and National Authorities, you can go fuck the right away with this shit!
It’s bad enough we are a country of national data collection with flimsy laws of obtaining access to said data, but to then go that one step further and shove back doors into everything is going too far.
https://news.com.au/technology/...
Under the proposed new laws, Australian government agencies could compel companies to provide technical information such as design specifications to help in an investigation, remove electronic protections, assist in accessing material on a device subject to a warrant and even build or install software or equipment that could help authorities gather information.
What could possibly go wrong 🤷♂️2 -

Coworker: We you have to estimate these tasks.
Me (thinking): This task should take one day, but I'll add 4 hours in case something unexpected happens again.
* Estimates 12h
Coworker: Alright, the tasks for this sprint have been selected. Please start to work on them.
Me: * Starts working on certain task
* Sees time available for task
2d 4h (=20h)
* Writes coworker
Dude, that much time is overkill for that task!
Coworker: Yeah, the client said something similar.
Me: Then why did you estimate it that high?
Coworker: 🤷♂️
Me: Ok, what am I gonna do with all that extra time? 😑
Coworker: 🤷♂️
Thanks mate.
Around 4 hours in and almost done. What should I do with that extra time?
Task in question: Add a mutually exclusive field to a database table, add it to the form, test it and update the docs.

Fuck me in the ass, but do it harder then this api just so I can feel some love 😖
it's one of those days where you have to migrate from soap to rest, only the rest api doesn't have the same structure or search parameters as the soap api, so there's this entire fucking application sending requests at a brick wall, and expecting a purple throbbing 12 inch cock of xml to be pushed into an multi dimensional array and pushed through to the views to derange the mess, only you have to create that fucking 12 inch cock from several 2 inch dipsticks that have a different hierarchy, different field names, and merge the shit together with a glue gun...
good thing it's only an unexpected prod problem... right? 🤷♂️

Who's got time to be an imposter. 🤷♂️
I am out of my depth 90% of the time, always diving into areas that are foreign to me, you just need to enjoy the buzz of knowing you are coming out the other side more knowledgeable then you did going in.
But if you do get overwhelmed with this condition, step back, take a breather, and use that moment to think things through at the big picture level before moving forward again, sometimes the right solution is hard to think off when you're to focused and drowning your way through a bad one.4 -
Today while looking at the logs, I found an issue.

Soooo it's Monday........ 🤯
@C0D4 started the day fixing current projects defects (4 tickets smashed before coffee 💪)
Then after coffee, run a test coverage report and see a significant decline over the past few months, so spends a couple hours adding more tests to get some areas filled in - meh, nothing like 50+ lines per test... to test a if() statement but whatever - complex scenarios will be complex to get too, but no my tests break and I'm missing data I didn't know about🤦♂️
So let's comment all that out, and go to lunch ... mmmm lunch.
Get back, start working on those again, and then get handed a new issue, so comment that all back out again, ( ok I know what you're thinking, but I'm working in an environment that does not use git for deployments - don't ask, real pain in the ass I haven't had time to invest into yet - but as code versioning only) anywho, starts to workout this new issue but don't figure it out, enter a 30 minute meeting.................. yea that was 2 hours later but was a very practical whiteboard session only to work out I have something like 16-20 weeks of work over 4-5 projects to get out in like 6 weeks... hahahahahahaha fml..... oh and that's excluding another project which had a 6 weeks of work in the pipeline to get to somehow.... I'm not seeing this one happening, and probably conflicting projects needed on top of that down the track... but we'll leave those out for now!
Whoot is fucking home time!!!
🤷♂️I'm starting to think I'm like a team of 5-10 devs right now, maybe I should start asking for 5-10x more 😏

I applied for a frontend dev position.
The HR sent me a mail with details for MERN developer position (Full-stack) and asked me do an assignment with frontend and backend 🤔
I requested to clarify if I'm supposed to do only frontend as that's the position I applied for.
No response on that. They got back and requested me to schedule an interview.
I have worked with NodeJS before but I primarily work on the frontend, still I went along with it anyway.
I aced the first two rounds, but for the final round they emphasized on the backend and then it went downhill. At the end they said I was really good on the frontend but for that position they needed someone particularly with expertise on the backend. 🤷♂️
Well, I didn't intend to work Full-stack anyway.
They wanted me do everything and also lead the team and mentor juniors and take ownership of multiple projects.
I mean, why would I want to work the job of two people (or more) and not get paid that much 🤨5 -
(As a freelancer I was asked to do a couple of tasks on legacy code)
Let’s check this code, how bad can it be?
- all of the following: unreadable mess, no auto linting
- tests: some are there cause there’s not enough automation, others are poorly named
- frontend: somehow a genius made a react component for every variable in the store which only passes the variable to the child (wtf)
- backend: death by best practices
- ci/cd: “we have it but it’s broken”
Let’s fucking goooo 😎
Diagnosis: my therapist is getting rich

you motherfucking cocksucking ass wipes.
How fucking hard is it for you JS cockheads to have STABLE fucking code?
So hear I am, thinking through a side project for data extraction and loading to automate some shitty part of my job, that could be used by the broader team... and decide to use electron.... I know it's a clusterfuck, but this wouldn't be a big application, so against my better judgement I run:
npm install electron
npm start
...
Error: unknown spawn
🤷♂️ you had 1 fucking job... 1 fucking lousy shit stain of a job, and you can't even have something run out of the god foresaken box without someone debugging your shit.
Now who has a WORKING alternative to electron?10 -

After noticing 4 operations in a single line, I comment a pr stating the line is not simple to read as there are many operations which can be, especially in the eyes of a junior, hard to read.
I proceed to suggest a better solution.
Colleague: “what??? How is this not readable??? Is it [op1], [op2], [op3] or [op4]? 🤷♂️”
I kindly explain this person that it’s not about the single operations, but the fact they are all on a line. Inside an object assignment.
Colleague: “you should learn stuff! (4 links to websites giving that snippet of code”
Ah yes, the oldie: “but other people are jumping off a cliff, why don’t WE do it???”5 -

In the office, sometimes we order food for lunch.
Me: *goes outside the office to make the call*
*Coding partner arrives while I'm on phone*
Me: *realize that I forgot to ask him if he wanted food* Hey dude, do you want to order something?
Him: *thinks* Nah, I'm fine, I brought my own lunch
Another Guy: That's good because we already called!
Me: Yeah, but it doesn't matter, I can call and tell them "Order++"
Him: Nah dude, tell him "++order", because maybe he'll bring the orders then go back and realize that he missed one

I don't know, it was funny for me 🤷♂️1 -
Not at all.
I’m a dropout. 🤷♂️
My dropping out was due to mental health from a bad relationship and also the realisation that I was failing the math-based portions of the course.
I’ve no doubt had I been better with maths and finished, the course would have been useful, but not the degree itself.
Not having it has never been a real barrier to my finding work, though it did raise eyebrows and require explanation to begin with... now my CV kinda speaks for itself in a way a degree simply doesn’t.
Throw in the fact that most grads can’t code (https://blog.codinghorror.com/why-c...) and employers are starting to wake up to the pointlessness of the degrees.
Real world learning, experience and intuition are *far* more valuable.
I will counterbalance this with the caveat that, if you’re doing things on the very bleeding edge, then a compsci degree beyond undergrad is likely the course you want to forge, I assume there’s no decent substitute for access to the knowledge of experts and the tech / equipment they bring to bear.... just avoid becoming an ivory tower type and you’ll be fine.4 -
It took me 5!!!! fucking hours to do it but I did.
I got linux to work with my RTX 2070 oh my god
Most of that time was spent figuring out what exactly was wrong because the problem is hella common but the cause doesn’t seem to be so i was sent off in the completely wrong direction a bunch of times
Apparently Nouveau doesn’t support my GPU yet and installing the binary driver from nvidia seemed impossible but i pulled it off thanks to some random stranger on askubuntu.com
Unfortunately i got it working on elementary os instead of ubuntu so now i have to go install ubuntu 🤷♂️13 -

I went to uni for CompSci with knowing no prior knowledge.
In my first year of uni I created a DigitalOcean droplet to host an SQL server. I didn't change the root password or disable password login out of convenience and as I didn't think anyone would be able to find the IP address to be able to hack it.
Within 3 hours DigitalOcean had locked my account for using my droplet to send DDoS attacks. Support contacted me to ask what was going on. I knew nothing at the time so I was a bit 🤷♂️.
And that's when I learned the importance of changing your root password. -

dev : calling api on every product scroll is a stupid idea. we shouldn't do it. what if user has 100s of products bought?
mgmt : it isn't a practical scenario. in prod, we checked the data and we rarely have customers with more than 20 products
dev : 😮🤷♂️
dev : this is a rare issue that only happens for very old devices from this specific manufacturer. even manufacturers have acknowledged this.
mgmt : we don't care. fix it, as per data this error has been logged for more than 12 times (from 1 user only)

Talking to a second year student about what they've learnt so far, and what they should learn next:
"Cool, so what general topics would you say you know really thoroughly at the moment?"
"Oh, I've now learnt Java, C#, C, C++, Rust, Javascript, node.js, HTML, CSS, Angular, Vue, Erlang and probably a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten. What do you think I should concentrate on next?"
"Hmm. Probably best to take just one of those and learn it really thoroughly."
"...but I already know them all really thoroughly."
"Ok. Can you explain what an abstract class is in say Java, C# or C++?"
"Sure, I can create a new class called abstract and then use it for abstraction. I do that loads."

So my IT teacher wrote his own web server framework for NodeJS and he forces us to use it for assignments. Would be fine if:
1. It worked properly.
2. It had any kind of documentation.
3. He knew how it worked.
But no, we have to debug his shit and edit the js files in node_modules to get shit working.
Is he open to suggestions? Not really. If you have a fix, you have to create a gitlab account and send a pr. Even if you tell him what exactly is wrong. He won't do anything about it.
Why use express when we can learn something we'll never use again?
At this point I think we're using it only so that he gets downloads on npm.
Oh ya, he also copies package.json from project to project instead of creating a new one with up to date dependencies.

Always amazes me how as soon as someone is given the "tech lead" hat, they tend to argue for an alternative implementation for the sake of having last say instead of listening to those with more domain knowledge.
🤷♂️3 -
I've got tens of thousands of lines (maybe hundreds 🤷♂️) in open source bits and pieces. Much of it my own, but also other projects.
Not seen a penny, but never expected to. That's not why I do it.1 -
The office below us they do tax consulting ... One of the guys there was drinking beer as I walked past their reception... It's 9:39 for fucks sake 🤷♂️1

Recently had to start developing on a PLC for a new project and didn’t realize how much these companies fuck their developers.
For example, I’m using CODESYS to write structured text to run on the PLC. CODESYS is free to download. However, in the free tier, they take all your .st files and ur config files and combine them into a SINGLE FUCKING BINARY which completely defeats the purpose of version control.
However, if you BUY their pro license, you can install a git module.
There’s other things that make developing in them suck. For example, the only IDE you can use is the one built into CODESYS and it fucking sucks. Another one is that their builtin IDE has a “dark mode” that only works on certain files. If you open a function file, it uses dark mode. But if you open a struct file, it uses light mode.
Also, having no other runtime than the one built into CODESYS fucking sucks.
Maybe I’ve been spoiled with VSCode and python 🤷♂️5 -

Anyone here experienced with Route53?
I have a small issue I'm trying to think through on how to achieve with minimum effort and maintenance, essentially set once and walk away and never care about it again solution.
Basically what I have is:
sub.domain.com
and I need to get it to redirect over to
otherdomain.com/folderToGetTo/
Using a 301 would be ideal but how for the life of me do I go about serving a 301 redirect over a dns entry - short answer is I can't unless I'm missing something!
Both domains are owned by the same company so no issue in hijacking a subdomain... well besides internal politics but that's just another day 😏
First thoughts include setting up a S3 bucket with hosting and forcing the dns to that and then, redirect out of the bucket... seems overkill but will work.
Hoping to find a smaller solution that I don't have to justify a S3 bucket being used for a single file - audits suck alright🤷♂️
Oh and setting up a redirect at the originating domain will take longer then it's worth to setup and get approvals for so not worth the effort internally.
Yes I will accept "fuck off @C0D4" as an answer.question popcorn supplied c0d4 has a question redirect why can't we do it like normal people route5310 -
Can we just for a moment recognize how absolutely fucked Windows update is?
I have done everything, EVERYTHING, outside of booting from a live Linux OS and permanently deleting the windows update executables. All this to stop windows from force updating and rebooting my system while it's locked.
I've killed services, schedules, edited the registry, changed group policy. I even set my wireless connection as metered. Fun fact about that, if MS deems the update to be "priority" they'll download it anyway and reboot, so fuck your data-cap.
I wouldn't have a problem with it IF they would put everything back the way it was before, but those fucking cucks can't even be bothered with doing that. But you bet your fucking sassy ass they start up all the bullshit services I disabled last update are all running.
I don't even know WHY I even try.
Doesn't matter anyway, in a few months I won't even be able to use half the tools I use on Windows for work due to licensing issues 🤷♂️
At that point I will give a big fucking finger to Windows 🖕 and use a VM for all the fucking work related bullshit.
Fuck you Microsoft, I would say it's been fun but you're a god damned disaster. I wish that I could send a message to the entire MS board on how much they have failed, but unfortunately I rather like my freedom and it's frowned upon sending rotting roadkill in the mail.23 -
It’s always fun when you are asked to push to production on a friday afternoon...Because the project managers and owners won’t have be the ones who have to fix something on a friday night or weekend 🤷♂️

Mandatory training ... Coarse introduction video crashes 20 secs before end, can only proceed with the coarse by finishing the introduction video ... 🤦♂️🙈🤷♂️

30 years ago several people said they saw UFOs, poor videos of black dots in the sky appeared all the time. Today, 3B people with great cameras in their pockets but still no new material. 🤷♂️5

Anyone else celebrating new years alone at home? My "friends" are having a party somewhere but didn't invite me cause why would they? 🤷♂️
Anyway, happy new year. Hope you're having a better time than I have.1 -

You know morons are in control when they block you, and you can just browse in private mode to see all their shit & them backstabbing you after the fact...

Every time I updated API document, I ask you to comment
You said it looks fine
And when we start integration, you said this need to change
🤷♂️ -
Programming Paradigm Convergence.
I can already see it in JS and C#. Both have functional/OO aspects and keep growing more similar in terms of language features.
I'd rather see OOP die a fast and horrible death though 🤷♂️6 -
I remembered in my previous job, I was a frontend Dev and there is a backend developer. There's a task where computations are needed before presenting data in the frontend. Backend Dev asked me to do the computations in the frontend instead. Well well 🤷♂️
Have you experienced this before?6 -
I think there’s a correlation between my code quality and listening to A Tribe Called Quest. It’s weird. Everything time I put them on I make great code 🤷♂️
-
For me coding is a huge part of my mindset. I could be having a conversation with a gf and be debugging an issue in my head. I could wake up in the middle of the night and start coding an idea I had just thought of. Especially if I'm working on something I'm too excited about, I will work hours, days straight and not make time for much else. So I've phased through quite a few relationships this way (especially with normies) 🤷♂️ I almost feel like I'd have to be with someone as obsessed as I am for things to work out lol
-
So the app is live and there is an issue on one of the clients environment. Manager wants to roll back new version 🤷♂️ instead of fixing the actual issue on the environment.
Fuck that, its friday 😂1 -

Just started a side project, helping a friend make his Android app more stable and add a couple more features. We'll release the sources sometime later.
Gotta say, his code is just terrible. And it runs on top of some code written by someone else, and that's even worse.
But I don't know how I got the motivation to spend the whole Saturday cleaning it up, fixing warnings, making abstractions, extracting features to separate classes, converting some stuff to Kotlin, even adding a couple coroutines. It felt good fixing bad code.
Maybe because I have some coding freedom I kinda miss at work.
Maybe because the project is not that big.
Maybe because I know the guy has many skills, coding is just not one of them.
Maybe because that project has some cool in it I can't even describe.
Maybe because that's entirely within my skills but challenging enough to have fun working on it.
Or maybe is just the mood of the moment, and in a week or so I'll lose all the motivation, as it happened too many times.

A “do not disturb” timer in devRant would be nice, wouldn’t it?
At night it’s not a problem but I’m checking devRant 100x a day during business hours🤷♂️
Just a random thought..11 -

Since Friday whenever I come home my mates are partying, started drinking on Friday and didn’t really stop since.
Still made it to work today but now we’re having pints again.
I should take a break but it’s so much fun.. how bad can it be.. it’s just Guinness.. or how we call it by now „black gold“..
I’m too old to die young anyway🤷♂️🥳
Have a good week guys..1 -
My favourite laptop sticker has to be GatsbyJS's Watson floating around - Other favourites are my Nasa sticker and the stickermule donkey pixel art 😁
I am not going to lie and say my laptop hardshell looks great with the stickers as I stuck them on as I went along so it's all over the place 🤷♂️ -
To stay a dev (can do the role with my eyes closed) or take on the architecture role for this company that is sinking like the titanic.
Don’t bother with the hassle (don’t need more money tbh & don’t even know what the money is)?
Take the opportunity while it’s there and get it on my cv?
🤷♂️
#question4 -
A PM just asked me if i can change a display text on our webapp project.
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Isn't that what we have been doing the whole time ??

I got more interested about the technical side of bugs in video games.
Really didn't understand the Pokémon hype as a kid, few months ago watched an entire YouTube series explaining the Old Man Glitch and ACE exploits in the game. 🤷♂️1 -
I feel like I'm making friends here but then sometimes its like gaps of hours without activity ... 🤔 ... Then ... I realize I have been lurking along too much and make some posts and comments and there it is! 🤗🔥
Activity 🤷♂️
Thank you for that :/ us devs need eachother -
something id like to yell at my company:
if u only cant afford to take a certain team to team lunches because its getting too big, stop recruiting for fucks sake. it was literally the coolest perk🤷♂️ -
So why does the devrant list stays the same all the time 🤷♂️ I read those rants since monday wtf ...3

Building your e-commerce looks easy for a dev. Just build a webapp and cry over it not getting hits 🤷♂️.

Last Windows update corrupted all system UWP (or how to name "updated" settings) applications and start menu does not work at all, awesome.
Reverted to a safe point, installed update again, same result 🤷♂️2 -
Usually, the best approach to get a quick answer is by sending a DM.
To my surprise, the person mentioned that he will check it (then typical radio silence).
Next step, post in a channel that is dedicated to that topic, nothing.
Let's try an experience, I posted the same thing in a channel that the project manager has access to it. He just added an emoji and within 5 mn everyone was adding his input to the thread.
It seems that's the way how things work here 🤷♂️7 -
Some people, when confronted with a problem, think “I know, I’ll use regular expressions!”
…and now they have two problems. 🤦♂️🤷♂️6 -
I had an interview for a position with an initial part-time duration of 2 months.
It was a team lead role with full-time work only after two months. After some discussion about the role and the compensation, they asked me to get back with my expected salary for the part-time duration (they had a low number in mind from what I could understand as they were comparing it with my previous salary).
So considering what they were going to offer me for the full-time position, the part-time duration (3 hrs/day for two months), and the lead role, I followed up with a higher number (with some reasoning behind it) than they mentioned during the call.
I did not hear back from them after this. -
to lazy to open atom, open git, to commit and push to add/test some features on my website, just used the chrome console to add and test new stuff 🤷♂️
-
So you need babel to run es6+ on node js because node js can't handle es6 yet. 🤔
Why can't the node guys work with the babel guys to integrate babel with node and save me the extra stress of having to figure out if my es6 code is not working because of a syntax error or because I didn't transpile properly🤷♂️17 -
What's worse?
1. Toxic workplace but great boss or
2. Toxic boss but great workplace or
3. Toxic parents but great workplace and boss
Confession I've had all 3 for a long time at different times. Just that 3rd is permanent.🤷♂️8 -
Terraform: Tried to fetch your module .zip file but failed. No route to host. 🤷♂️
Curl: Got it, what you want me to do with it now boss?
What the literal fuck Terraform? Chrome and Curl have no problem seeing it.4 -
Gotta love the Phone guys. Mislabeled their Drops 😩. Had a follow up ticket for junction box replacement. A 2 min jobs took an extra 20 mins all due to phone guys putting the incorrect connector on their wires. Why put a Data Connector on a Phone wire. No wonder the printer wasn't getting the correct IP🤷♂️🤦♂️3

Everything from https://devrant.com/rants/4289918 but on the side of projects I happen to work with and dependencies. Applying this scope of change on one human is a bit cheap, don't you think? 🤷♂️

How do you go about finding work in the tech industry, to me it seems far harder sell then anything else?
Right now I’m struggling to get new business in since I do websites and apps
It seems because it’s niche and it’s a lot of money to put down it’s a risky sell to someone you don’t really know.
I believe my sites are quite good and I get decent feedback from customers telling me they get good results from their new site
🤷♂️ so I’m a bit at a loss -
How does someone with. A+ certs and a Network + and Cyber Security certifications and still only getting Help Desk jobs calling them 🤷♂️2

Have any devs done bar work before..?
I've always enjoyed doing things outside of work, and I work 3-4 days a week in my main job to create time for this. It's great for my mental health, and means I can optimise the main job for pay/good benefits and fulfil my "other needs" (stimulation/challenge/enjoyment) in other places.
The main things for me are dev contracting on the side or acting/singing, to a lesser extent travel, a bit of activism and law study. Just because 🤷♂️
Especially re: my last rant with *that* email from HR on Friday, I'm tempted to be a bit more strict about only doing three days and picking up something else.
Although I know the pay is awful, I really want to try bar work on the side just to do something different.
Has anyone else done bar work before?9 -
Graveyard shift sucks. I'm a morning person. My body clock is broken. I still can't sleep. Damn. Perks of being a high paid slave living in a rat race 🤷♂️
I just read that snickers can make you fall asleep. Will eat one now. Wish me luck guys.1 -
I’m sorry girls but I can’t trust y’all 🤷♂️. Periodt.
Also, who wants to get a hot dog with me rn. Im fucking starving my goober gabb off, I feel like a sage fasting for the sake of personal holyness, but like fuck that I’m zooted and I need a dog.2
