1. The quality of the coffee and toilet paper you encounter during an interview tells you more than promises about table tennis or fruit baskets.

2. Try to determine who their primary client is: subscribers, app buyers, advertisers, etc. It's a major influence on the company dynamic.

3. Before an interview, you can just say: "I would like to sit down with a PO and run through one backlog feature and one bug, to get a feel for the type of tasks at the company". Such an activity immediately reveals team structure, whether they have product owners & scrum masters, what a sprint looks like, how they prioritize tasks, and how organized/chaotic your work experience will be.

This happened at my previous job where I worked for a dating app. It was at a time where the CEO was trying to turn the dating app into “more than a dating app” by adding tons of social features. We always had “interests” which allowed users to see what interests they had in common with another person, but he wanted to take the social component even further.

So with that, he decided we needed an “activity feed.” The activity feed would show what various Facebook connected users were liking on Facebook, posting on Facebook, etc. On a dating app. Where the majority of the audience was > 50 years old. The idea was absolutely ridiculous and everyone but the CEO knew it was destined for failure before we started building it.

But that’s not the best part. The best part was when we launched the activity feed component. We launched it late on day and went home shortly after. The next morning, we came in, and checked on the activity feed to see what was doing. It was literally all spammers liking porn/sex related stuff on Facebook. It was a complete disaster. All garbage but not just boring garbage - completely obscene garbage.

And just like that, the activity feature came and went in the course of a few days.

When you look back on your github activity and just think "Wow, we have really created something special. This is really going to help the world." It just... It gets me. That's why I do this day in and day out.

Got caught using linux terminal by school security. They took my laptop away and drove me across campus in their security carts to take me to the office.

Unfortunately earlier tonight some code was deployed with functionality only compatible with the new version of the devRant app that will be coming out early this week. It caused some weird issues where normal rants would be rendered as collabs causing them to not show up correctly.

This happened when going to rants from the feed (fixed earlier) and going to rants from push notifications (fixed a little while ago).

I found a cool project on GitHub. I forked it and added a simple dev server with the intent of making it more accessible which could lead to more activity = improved project. I created a PR with small concise commits with very informative messages.

The guy who owns the project comments and says "I don't want your dev server, I have an apache instance locally on my computer". I tell him "Ok sure, but wouldn't it be nice if everyone else also had a nice dev server which can be started with a single command?", and other people join the PR and agree with me that we should make it available for everyone.

But the fucking idiot doesn't care, "No, I prefer to use my apache server". YOU FUCKING ASS WIPE, why do you even put it up on GitHub if you don't want contributions to make your project better and more available? I saw other open PRs where he basically did the same thing, left a snarky comment without merging it. What a fucking tool. Worst spent time ever.

As a human being, you're multithreaded. You can type with multiple fingers, you can drive and hold a conversation at the same time. The only blocking function we have to deal with is sneezing, where all current activity must be suspended for the duration of the sneeze. Worst experience was my first job after study. They told me at the interview that the job has very low travel activity... "we are doing most of the projects in-house...just traveling to the customer now and then for kick offs or when the software has to be trained"

A half year later I had to travel every fucking week to the customer. Fixing shitty code from a freelancer who never worked in a team, in a language I've never used before (they told me the first day at the customer). Don't get me wrong, I love learning new stuff but this project and architecture was a totally fucked up mess. Flew every monday to the customer (had to get up at 4am monday morning to get the flight) and friday back. Quit the job after living 3 months from a fucking suitcase.

Fuck this impossible system with it's promises of finding a cure and it's high pay but high taxes and expensive rent for living in a shitty rented apartment with no friends around, nothing to do than watch YouTube and play video games and be depressed half the time, then die because of lack of phisical activity.

And when dfox comes up with algo v3 he can preference different rants according to categories.

Since memes have become an integral part of our community, I propose a way to handle them without affecting the actual Ranters.

Everyone adding a meme or a gag picture can do so under a particular tag, and the Algo can handle your meme needs by exposing you to that particular tag based on your activity with such posts.

Or you could just make the users search for memes if they wanted to see them.

This could also be done vice versa by ranters using a RANT tag, I would keep my RANT filter on so anything without that tag won't show up

How I solve complex problem during development.

1. I left my machine with all the thinking and start to think of another activity.

2. Start another activity I like specially a physical one like playing a game, jogging or just walking.

3. Then after I am fully involved with this activity I start to think of different scenarios of the problem I was trying to solve.

4. Eventually, different solutions came to my mind and I evaluate them one by one with respect to my problem.

5. I finalize a couple of solutions based on the evaluations.

6. Rush to my machine and start implementation to see if it work.

PS: During all these thinking I will be terrible at the activity I am doing.

You know that coding - a primarily digital activity, is getting serious when you get out your pencil and paper IDE.

As an introvert, this is a big challenge. A few years ago, I buried my social life to be focused on my work. But after some years, I realized this was doing more harm than good to me.
Since then I try to dedicate more time to friends, social events, and family. It's not easy to keep in touch, invite to a coffee, joining a class/activity and meet new people. Everyone's life is so busy today. But it's worth.
I always feel so much better after have a good conversation, sharing experiences and ideas.

My PM wants to take the current website, which really sucks on mobile (one of the worst mobile viewports I have seen) and put in an iOS/Android app.

So basically he wants an iOS/Android app which contains only 1 activity/viewcontroller which contains a webview...

Tried to talk him out of it, but I can't even get him to consider using a hybrid framework.

He doesn't appear to care very much about performance of the app neither does the PM care much about UX.

What the PM does care about is this thing called : ONE CODEBASE.

I will go first , once I worked with a Dev who used dashes for naming variables (eg _ = 'a' , __ = 'b', ___='c'), placing every everything in the main class . We were working on android (java) project back then. He decided to place everytime in the main activity, rewriting redundant functions. And he never use git, he literally use hard-disk and Google drive to back up his code which made us difficult to know which part of code he wrote. I quit working there because he was the Senior Project Manager.

Definitely music production. Especially when using real instruments and capture their audio, so everything is quantized (i.e. fixed to time grid) and very tightly recorded. I make metal, 'tis a precise genre. For one riff it sometimes take 20 takes, since I record 4 times my guitar.

I've learned for the past 10 years how to compose, mix, masterize, but also learned how to sing, learned how to play the guitar, learned how to compose drums and using my keyboard to play drums (people are often surprised I can play double kicks @ 230 bpm) so that I can have a basic drum layer to further edit

Curious interview process for a job I was denied for. I was told to create an app for a "case study" I was given a week it was supposed to be a single activity sports app written in MVVM with a specific API. I turned in a single activity, 3 fragment application, that made queries and displayed results from that specific API as well as told the weather and in quirky quotes told you whether or not it was a good idea to go tailgating. When I got to the interview after turning it in a day early they said they loved the application, hounded me on code (all questions in which I answered) and they told me that I would get word on next steps within the next few days. Obviously I didn't get that job as earlier stated however, does this not seem weird?

It had been too long that I had a nightmare that I wished I never had. I had one this early morning.

I was in a foreign metropolitan city with public transport trains, skyscrapers and everything. I had no phone, no cash, no card. Arch has a great default package manager, and it's the basis for why I love Arch as much as I do.

A completed install is pretty minimal, and as a user who knows what apps I want, that's perfect for me. When I've used any other major distro of late, my post-install activity mostly consisted of removing software, changing defaults, and otherwise swimming upstream against the intent of the distro's maintainers.

With Arch, I start with a more or less blank slate, and then add the components I want to it. It's so intensely satisfying to have a system that is composed almost entirely of software I explicitly wanted to have.

The result is a system that behaves pretty much exactly the way I want.

Why is the text in the appbar black, but all other icons (including the lock inside the textview) white. It would make sense, if the lock would be black too (as the textview is abit lighter than the appbar).

Maps was way easier to use, before they invented MD Refresh. When you tap on a point on the map you get that info view at the bottom of the screen. Before it was a draggable window, which could be maximized with a swipe. Now you have to tap it, the box goes away and a new window appears, which is just the same as before MD-Refresh.

In "Google Tasks" the activity title is not centered for some reason.

Once upon a time there used to be a ViewPager who was not able to load a Fragment UI.
All the ViewPagers in town can properly load the Fragrant UI but this one was little different.

He wanted to be more then just a ViewPager. He used to see an Activity that can load anything. He was inspired from the Activity and wanted to be like the Activity but his destiny made him just a ViewPager.

So he refused to cooperate. He started to protest silently, No log, nothing.

Everyone assumed this ViewPager have a bug in it. but he was planning something really big that will left everyone in shock and awe moment.

He was planning to rise against the evil 😈 developers who continuously making him to load Fragrant UI

He assembled the biggest army of the bugs that humanity ever seen to counter the developers.

He distributed these bugs in all over the developer's code to make them fire from their work.

Even he taught bugs to not caught in QA testing but appear in production randomly.
So they silently started going into production

And then chaos is erupted all around the world, bugs started to surface and interrupted the daily life of humanity.

In this chaos the ViewPager RAISED!
And took over all the base classes.

ViewPager was unaware of few facts. this unnecessary rise in his power made whole system unstable

Without the base classes the system finally collapsed and then ViewPager as well with the system.

This was the end of everything for the ViewPager but he was satisfied as he lived the life he always wanted

I was able to break it 😆

After reading about its syntax for over 2 weeks , i finally sat down to write a simple parsing app completely in kotlin. And now i don't know how, but i am able to store a null in a "val x:String" (i.e a non null variable)

I am not going to claim it as some miracle or discovery as some other ranters, it might be a mistake. I am just a 21 yo Android/java dev trying to re write my old ,tested java code to kotlin by myself, without any auto convert, in the middle of night when i am 99% asleep by brain.

I will try to raise an SO question with details, but all i used was a simple volley request returning heterogeneous data, a gson convertor and a single activity,

I got my new(to me) MacBook Pro last week, provided by work. I've got all my setup and config done, for the most part, and I've noticed something.

Performance is shit. Has anyone else noticed this about the 2017 and later models? The 2015 model I had before was much, much smoother. Just zooming windows, a previously butter-smooth experience, is noticeably choppy. I/O performance is garbage too. I have a small iotest script that just writes a string a couple hundred times to disk, deletes it, and repeats this activity 100,000 times. On my Linux machine at home with six year old hardware, this takes about three seconds. On my new system76 laptop it takes just over a second. On the 2017 MacBook Pro, it takes about forty seconds.

The 2017 and 2018 models are a direct downgrade in performance. Why isn't anyone talking about this?

So we develop several apps for Android.
And since the whole company is full of .Net developers we´re using Xamarin.
That piece of software alone is worth more than one rant.

But today someone called and said he updated to the latest version he got from our server.
But now one of the menu points in the settings menu is opening the wrong mask.

I´m like ... what? Who fucked that one up now. Ok...
I look at the code and, I didn´t expect it to be honest, but it looks alright.
The menu point has the correct id. The function "OnOptionsItemSelected" looks for the correct id and opens the correct activity.
Just to be sure I also check the activity.
Everything good.

So I start up an emulator. Deploy the app in debug. Works correctly.
Create a self signed apk and install it on the emulator. Works.
Repeat the same with a tablet and my personal phone. It works.

Then I install the apk from the server and would you look at that.
It opens the wrong mask.

So it seems only if the app is compiled on the release server it shows that strange behaviour.

And for the love of my 1080ti I can´t figure out what causes it...

I've waited for more than two weeks on acceptance on my PR, the maintainers hasn't been active and I've even notified them of my worries.. But so far no activity.

So, i decided to Start making an Android App (quite a big Project to me), so i we're Reading books und Programming Yesterday for 12, today for 10 hours, everything worked Out perfectly, i fehlt great.
(But, Thats the rule, never feel too confident)

So i wanted to Put the Last Activity in my App, chanhed the XML etc.
At the end i thought i should run it one Last Time before i shutdown my PC.
Well, Error in my XML, tried to fix it for 1 hour (quiet a Long Time for 8 lines of Code), didnt Work.
I pressed Ctrl+z until it reached the Point where it Last Time worked... Still doesnt Work.

So, i am quiet pissed Off, and sleepy.
My Dilemma, eat and sleep? Or try to fix everything...

Todays "WTF Bitbucket?"

You can mark a PR with "Requesting changes" even if it was already merged but you haven't refreshed your page.

The whole PR page is loaded with a dozen independent requests but you cannot reload a single "widget" (e.g. Activity) without refreshing the page.
And then you do an API request "mark PR with request for changes" and the server accepts that, even if the PR is merged. Why? Nobody looks at a merged PR with Requested changes. You would expect a warning "cannot mark request changes, PR already merged" but no, Atlassian fucked up here again.

The new "PR experience" is shit. Just loading everything in a separate request does help nothing if I still have to reload the page to get an updated PR view.

Each room has a topic as it's title, and this room acts like a group chat. Individuals can join public rooms and rant about the specified topic. Or, private rooms can be created and the creator can invite people to this room.

like comparing with the most basic ui framework : html/css/js, why android is so different? we got activities, fragments and views. the worst thing in android is lifecycles, that each of these ui components have.

The view lifecycle is simple to get over with : whatever is the lifecycle of its parent, is the lifecycle of view.

a view's parent is another view, whose parent is another view, whose parent is... and so on until we reach the root view which is stored by either a fragment or activity

till here its very clear. the fuckup is simply in the next part:
WTAF is activity ?WTAF is fragment? why are their various functions called in the sequence they are called? oncreate, on start, onstartview, ondestroy... why?
activity is still somewhat okay, but fragment is completey weird af : it can be a part of activity: basically it can cover your complete screen and behave as an activity itself (so you don't get to say that activity === screen and fragment === view) AND IT HAS ITS OWN FUCKING LIFECYCLES! So does that mean fragment's fucntions cna also be called by OS?

what's more mind fucking, is the fact that android activity can destroy/pause or recreate fragments on its own, by some "views" like viewpager , or even hold multiple fragments as "alive" at the same time, using something called a "backstack" ??!??!

and each of these fragments in the stack can be called by system at any time? like wtf???

all these stuff is super confusing and i haven't even scratched the surface. the newer , more complicated stuff like viewmodel, livedata and again "lifecycles" has a complete seperate behavior and functionality of their own. plus the various "reality-check" scenarios like: when a user is streaming a video in picture-in-picture mode while keeping your app in split screen with maps in the second split, when a call comes and the video keeps running, and user rotates the device, let me know the clusterfuck situation for the 3rd fragment in your 5 icon navigation view currently at the payment page with 2 fragments and 1 activity in backstack!!!

god bless thy soul for this shitty framework isn't going anywhere , rather its super strong and getting more clusterfucked with new beautiful shit everyday.

I cannot understand the reasoning behind anyone using Gitlab instead of Github
I have to use it (gitlab) for a project, and these are my observations:
- clicking on one of the tabs on a project throws an internal server error
- under activity, the creation of the repo is listed under issues activity??
- cannot manage to push, even though I have the developer role (permissions broken?)

Ps: when choosing tabs, typing "gitlab is a" comes up with "gitlab is a joke" as autocompletion ;)

Launch modes in Android?

Standard: It creates a new instance of an activity in the task from which it was started. Multiple instances of the activity can be created and multiple instances can be added to the same or different tasks.
Eg: Suppose there is an activity stack of A -> B -> C.
Now if we launch B again with the launch mode is “standard”, the new stack will be A -> B -> C -> B.
singleton: It is the same as the standard, except if there is a previous instance of the activity that exists in the top of the stack, then it will not create a new instance but rather send the intent to the existing instance of the activity.
Eg: Suppose there is an activity stack of A -> B.
Now if we launch C with the launch mode as “singleton”, the new stack will be A -> B -> C as usual.
Now if there is an activity stack of A -> B -> C.
If we launch C again with the launch mode as “singleton”, the new stack will still be A -> B -> C.
SingleTask: A new task will always be created and a new instance will be pushed to the task as the root one. So if the activity is already in the task, the intent will be redirected to onNewIntent() else a new instance will be created. At a time only one instance of activity will exist.
Eg: Suppose there is an activity stack of A -> B -> C -> D.
Now if we launch D with the launch mode as “single-task”, the new stack will be A -> B -> C -> D as usual.
Now if there is an activity stack of A -> B -> C -> D.

So, in my second semester of CS I had a class about OS and the way they work. The professor made us do presentations every two weeks (we were basically giving the class...).

For full points we had to have the presentation, an example (video or pictures), and an activity.

My team was one of the last presentations of the first round (iirc there were 5 rounds). I was in charge of the activity, so I decided to create a program to make it fun (and leaned a new language in the way). Thanks to this the professor gave us extra credit because we were the first team that ever did that.

My classmates decided that it was a good idea to follow my idea and a couple of teams started to code their activities too. At the end of the semester almost every team had a program as their activity...
But the professor didn't gave them extra credit because it wasn't a novelty anymore. :D

For some reason I find reading tech books a repelling activity. I'd rather spend longer hours googling SO issues, GH/GL tickets, reading blogs than reading a well recommended book on the topic.

But then again.. What is the difference between a series of blog posts and a book...? Not much of it. At least I cannot come up with how blog posts would be superior to a structured and many times reviewed book :) Many posts are lame or just skim through the topic. The same holds true with books too. Be careful with scams. The last scam-looking thing I've seen pop up a lot is a mail from Paypal saying my account has been terminated due to a breaking a rule that encompasses a lot of different things (from scams to illegal activity).

most of the time, I get an idea, open vscode and start typing (maybe install some modules for like 10 minutes), not with this: Android studio took hours to download with all the needed SDKs and libraries, then I created a new empty(!) Activity, then fucking Gradle needs hours to get it fucking ready... On a fucking XPS 13 9370!

How do you guys cope with that waiting, does it scale that way to bigger projects?
I would call myself rather patient, but if I have an idea, I don't want to set up the most basic environment for 3 hours...

I hate the new Teams. It's showing a distracting red icon in the activity bar when someone's sent a chat. Then, when clicking the chat icon in Teams you'd expect it to take me there so I could reset the chat and make it stop showing that irritating red notification in the activity bar. But NO, nothing happens when clicking the chat icon. Useless UX to say the least! This is one of the main reasons why I never use Teams for chatting, and I only open the application for meetings and then immediately shut it down. How come Microsoft, that's been around for so fucking long, still haven't learnt to design consistent, user-friendly and distraction-free applications? I think the answer is: They don't give a shit.
