Stories from Gary #000
Short background info:
So I'm working as a game dev for 3 years now and by now I can say that I've seen some shit. Mostly because of one of our game designers, let's call him Gary.
So Gary, from here on called GDG (Game Designer Gary), is a regular game designer (GD). His job is to come up with new game ideas, commission the assets, make sure that translations are done, etc. - simply put, he has to get a lot of shit together before we can start working on a new game.
Would be no problem at all if GDG wasn't lazy as shit and would work for once in his life. No dev really wants to work with him anymore, since he's known for calling a game or any issue "ready for development" even if half the assets or specs are still missing.
Let's move on to a particular situation that happened a couple of months ago.
I had an issue assigned to me, which was about implementing the translations for a new game. As I read the issue and checked if everything I needed was given, I noticed that the most important part was in fact missing - the keywords for the translations.
-.-
So, I called GDG and asked where I could find the keywords, to which he responded "Oh, I'm working on them right now... and by the way I got a weird bug with the translation program. Can you come check it out?". Sigh. I went over to his office, rambling about how I should be able to help him with a program I rarely use and which was written ages ago.
As soon as GDG saw me coming roundbthe corner, he started explaining how the keywords aren't ready yet, since the program to create translations and their keywords won't let him name a translation.
"I can create new translations, but I can't assign a keyword to them."
"Okay, show me what you did", I told him, eager to leave.
He started to type the keyword, which turned out to be huge ass long and immediately I noticed a little counter, like "x/50", directly beneath the text field started to count up with every new character GDG typed. See where I'm going with this? HE WASNT ABLE TO RENAME A TRANSLATION BECAUSE HE WAS TOO LAZY TO FUCKING READ AND CONCENTRATE FOR ONCE. Sorry for that, but even thinking about it gets me angry again.
To some this might sound like nothing, but it really got to me at this point. Maybe it will become more understandable as I post more GDG stories.
tl;dr: A 40 something year old man, who's been working in his job for over 10 years wasn't able to use a program which he daily uses and asks me for help, only to find out he's a complete dipshit.4 -

I’m doing an internship, this is worst experience. No structure whatsoever,I don’t think they care about our interests. They’re just giving us coding stuff without even knowing if we’re interested or not in that particular field or technology. They made me code in c#. I’ve never used that a day in my life. The backend is big and complex with no comments or proper documentation(no documentation at all), only thing they gave us are some flow charts. I’m stressed out tbh.12

-
Honestly, I think this one is yet to come for me.
I've had a few bad experiences, but the worst ones are the ones where I couldn't find the time or brain to get some work done properly and therefore did bare minimum, so I basically was driven to shame because my teammates did almost everything.
Second to that, are times where I had to go through drama because teammates were absolutely incompetent or power hungry or inflexible.
Otherwise, it's "live and let die".
Note: I use "teammate" in general sense, equaling "coworker", "colleague", "the guy who's supposed to give me details or access" and "those in on the project" in this rant.2 -

Why do Android apps not clear their own irrelevant notifications?
For example: If I mark all notifs as read within the devRant app, or archive an email in Gmail, or read a message in the Jira app, why does it not clear the status bar notification?
Is there a good reason, or is it just often overlooked by developers to perform a cleanup action like this?6 -
Fuck YouTube and their sponsored content!
You can clearly see they get paid to promote certain videos as they pop out of nowhere, regardless of your interests, and no matter how many time you click "I don't like this" or "don't recommend channel".
It can be simple stuff like Warthunder vids (which I don't play and never searched for),
Or complex like the Amber Heard trial - vids that make her look foolish. Feels like Depp dropped some serious cash on YouTube to make him look like a victim! (regardless if he really is or not)
Isn't there a law that sponsored content must be marked as such?14 -

There are two weeks left until the PhD application results are published. But I'm having such awful nervous breakdowns. I don't even know, if it's anxiety or if I'm literally dying inside from something else. From an almost-heart-attack today when I got a trivial and unrelated bad-news email, to keep having weird dreams about things like end of the world and post-apocalyptic life, or being jumpy all the time.
... And it's not like it's life or death, I know that. I know that I can do other things if this doesn't stick. I know things will workout the way they should; I know all of those. But there's just something destroying my physical and mental health right now, and I don't even know if it's just the anxiety for the next big step in my career, or something else, or how I should deal with it.
... Anyways, amannoyed.7 -
I have the feeling that the whole software industry is not making any real progress anymore. Or at least not at that speed like for 10-20 years or so. Now one company doing something somehow innovative and everybodys copying that shit and start a feature battle. Just to have more reasons to suck you into their ecosystem and grab your wallet.4

I think I've reached some kind of job nirvana. My coworkers and I all complain about our work. We're overworked, underappreciated, underpaid, and and have to deal with all sorts of bullshit all the time. Pretty much everyone who has been on the team longer than a year is talking about quitting.
But I started at this company as a level 1 tech support phone technician before I transferred into the DevOps side of things, and that tech support job was SO much worse. Way more stressful, way less pay, mandatory overtime, horrible scheduling, being forced to remain calm while people hurl insults at you over the phone, and it was a dead-end job with a high turnover rate and almost no opportunities for advancement of any kind.
And every time I think back on that job, I realize that what I have now is actually pretty great. I'm paid well (still underpaid for the job I do, but catching up really fast due to my current boss giving me several big raises to keep me from quitting lol). I deal only with other tech people like developers and data scientists so no more listening to salesmen insult me on the phone. I'm not in any sort of customer service role so I can call people on their bullshit as long as I'm professional about it. I'm salaried so they can't make me work horrible shifts. 99% of my days are a normal 9-5 workday. I actually have a reliable schedule to plan around.
People treat me like the adult that I am.
I'd get a similar experience at other, better-paying companies, for sure, but what I have now is still pretty great.
I'm sure I'll be back in a few days to rant about more nonsensical bullshit and stress, but for now I'm feeling the zen. -

Can github (not google) copilot be run on a company server? Or some scaled down version?

Money or growth?
I'm mid level SE, looking to get promoted to Senior Level in January 2023.
(context: there are 4 levels before Engineering Manager or Software Architect in our company - 1 (or junior), 2 (or mid), 3 (or senior), 4 (or lead)...
But my total pay (way too good for my age at my place, but Software Engineers specially in FAANG and FAANG-like companies are overpaid here compared to the rest of the market.
My company, an Amazon's competitor in local market, earlier used to pay almost same as Amazon (or slightly higher to attract talent).
Recently, due to splurge of remote jobs, the MNCs started opening more offices (likes of Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman, Morgan etc) hence the salaries increased even more.
Amazon for example, recently gave 33% increment on base pay recently.
Taking their base salary equal to my total pay (including stocks, bonus).
Should I switch for money or stay for growth?3 -

So, the reason the world sucks, is they look at restoring everything to a livable situation as going backwards.
Back to a better time
Back before a person knew something
would have saved us all a lot more youth life and hardship if they'd pulled their heads out of their asses and realized the generalized TRENDS are not hard and fast rules like they try to make them.
Easier for nothing to be forever most especially if they didn't lie so much. Like saying someone is dead who is not, or someone is alive who is not, or messing with someones finances or stress levels or pretending that a person isn't able to return to a profession after a hiatus or that hardship that makes a person blameless for unemployment etc is a life ender because some younger idiot is always on the way.
or how about just the dynamic of losing everything due to losing/leaving a job, being incarcerated, or having a health problem. these things are ALL exploitable concepts that are taken advantage of every day when they should be insulated against so society can thrive and be safeguarded against the most warped members of the human race.
if we wrote code the way they govern or live everytime someone kicked their box something would work, and everytime they hit enter more than once their machine would overheat and turn off.
hell or if you waited a few seconds it would delete your whole database. -
So Im planning to build a pc, which i will mainly use it for dev and gaming in free time, my main components will be:

getting mogged by people with less experience and/or spending less effort
it's almost a talent for me to be this bad at being a code monkey -
Was always wondering how different programmers perceive their IDEs: for front-enders it's simple lightweight cool-looking notepad when majority of back-enders uses heavy tank-looking shit like intellij or eclipse with guns, rifles and much more shit6
-
I’ve been very unlucky, undertalented, or underfunded with scaling issues. Can’t think of a time I ever successfully scaled a website or application to a faster performance because of any or all of those three factors.1

Hi!
I wonder what do you do when you are waiting for docker image gets built or github jobs get done?15 -
Limitation as a way to force creativity. What do you think about this?
Platforms such as Vine or Twitter limits you somehow, but people still found a way to build their creativity around and grow a following. At the same rate, most Game Jams give you a theme and sometimes some kind of limitations and the result is in almost every jam at least a few interesting games.
Now, looking specifically at dev work, some frameworks or languages limit you somehow. Lets think about Rust safety or Node single threadness.
Do you think those work as limitation to enhance creativity as well? Not necessary by design.6 -
So... This month I will start a new role in a new company as a Tech Lead. This is my first time in this position. Any suggestions or tips from you guys are appreciated.16
-
when a senior likes to kick up a fuss on PR reviews, you'll do whatever dumbass shit they want in most cases, assuming it works
but its a relief when a tech lead or architect tells them to fuck off -
Does any one know how Containers (?) like Zip or exe files work? I mean when you open it with a texteditor you can't see much?!15

I'm planning to switch from ownCloud to Nextcloud in the next weeks. Does anyone have experience with that or maybe some advice? Aside from creating Backups.7

17,000 USD a year?! That's outrageously high (for a Philippino)!! This dev must either be a god or they're ripping us off!

In the midst of considering to be an AI engineer, data science or embedded programmer.
Plan to retire from mobile dev, backend dev and webdev. -
Take a walk, or focus on something else for a while, then after I've had a break I can return to whatever the problem is.

Got an interview with Amazon in a week. I’m at the interview loop stage where I do 5x 1 hour interviews. Anyone work at Amazon and got any recommendations on what I should study or how I should prepare?3

Open question:
Do you and your dev team openly embrace using a formatter for your projects, or do you not? And why?
My senior dev is trying to argue that it creates too much noise for commits, especially on older files and it's driving me nuts because I religiously use it (default TS formatter in VSCode btw, nothing crazy or super opinionated!)15 -
So in PEP 594 of Python, some standard library modules are getting deprecated. Sorry for anyone who still uses aifc or crypt.
-
I'm in love with F#, the tooling can be a little buggy if you're used to TypeScript or Java but before learning it I've never been able to solve a real life problem with less than 10 lines of code7

In Africa,
To get a private company job, you need skills, not books.
To get a government job, you Connections to big people, not books or skills .
To get a scholarship for higher studies, you need books.2 -
create large PR and annotate points of interest on the PR
still get told to walk through it for people as they won't be arsed to read it, or even look at the points of interests themselves1 -
About to tell the boss I can spend more time tracking my time and moving tasks around in the latest of the project management softwares I’ve had to use here, or I can do the actual work. Not both.
-
Every fucking time I start a new project I always forget the basics of using the same operation names, either CRUD(I) or BREAD.. Then I have functions that start with fetch or get and some are list some are browse.. Then I spend an hour refactoring all those to use a standardized naming convention! FFS! I'm so stupid!4

I think I'll clearn and update my Server this weekend (since it's still on Debian 8).Wish me luck or dig my grave.
P.s.: Tips/suggestions/experiences are also very appreciated3 -

how good is our devops out of 10?3 -
i do nothing special or different
gradle & eclipse: those dependencies which were literally just working are now fucked up, please fix me6 -
Imagine that I have written 1000 lines of code and imported many libraries. Sometimes I get confused when trying to use a name I defined earlier. In my mind is this name a class or a method, is it a local or global variable, is this a constant. So I came up with a way and it totally works, although my ide complains, but who cares, I use it anyway.
I use PascalCase for class.
camelCase for methods.
snake_case or lowercase for global variables.
kebab-case I don't use this
UPPER_CASE for constants
snake_caseL or lowercaseL with a capital letter L at the ending for local variable.
I hope this is helpful 😊🤔11 -
When looking for technological answers or missing documentation, I often find my own questions and work-in-progress repositories on top of the search results. Either my problems are so unique (quite unlikely when following an official tutorial) or it's my way to describe the issues? Or maybe nobody else bothers to share their problems and knowledge publicly anymore?

From a few days I have just been unable to make myself work and am so behind on my hours it seems overwhelming now
I don't know if it's burn out or lack of motivation or transition or what but I am just unable to comprehend anything work related.
does it happen to someone else as well? what's the cure? -
Yo guys any advice or tips for product dev/product management (internship) and all would be awesome1
-
senior: i need to waste your time on a completed task instead of distilling or teaching the learnings from it

As someone who doesn't know coding or the stuff everyone deals with I feel confused. Aye the insights good tho.2

Is ± read from left to right or right to left?
So if I write 1m ± 1% ± 1% does that mean 1m ± 2.01% (1% applied twice) or 1m ± 1.01% (1% applied to 1%)?8 -
Should I just be a silly stupid evil selfish reckless bastard who is engages in wholesale rapine and doesn’t care about anything or make any rational or reasonable commentary on our system or any intelligent reasoning ?
Just remain curious
Seems to work for the garbage who should be getting punished and do everything to encourage their own punishment
Just saying
And wtf is that about ?
How can people who deserve it profit by this ?

Question for devs:
How are y’all handling copy changes in your app? What’s ur process? Do you put up a PR for every small copy change or do you use a special tool or something?4 -
People are like programming environments, in basics all people are the same like all programming environments are the same, every programming language have a loop and conditions, numbers, strings and dates. The problem starts with syntax to write code or can you call it communicate with person. There are syntax errors, someone use functions and classes and that’s ok but someone is writing everything in one file and then it’s hard to communicate or change something. But the real problem are libraries or you can call it believes. Everyone is believing something but when you start using it and want some advanced functions there’s always something missing. When you want to contribute to fix that stuff you often can’t cause it’s closed source or maintainers are pricks. You end up writing wrappers and decorators, ignore malfunctions to somehow live with that problem. That’s called social skills.
We’re just programming environments. That’s all.1 -
How many of you ever developed (Or partially) "Stockholm syndrome" with your boss / project manager?

What are the differences between a religion and a conspiracy theory? is the question I was just asking myself.
Maybe the spiritual element is what conspiracy theories (or, actually, any kinds of theories) lack?7 -

To what order of magnitude would be sufficient to step time based functions for physics applications ? Since direct solutions off multivariant co dependent problems usually cant be found until you update things like position velocity and or energy over a very short tike period first. Example being gravitation or electrostatics
Like nano seconds ?12 -

What is gonna happen in 8/16, 2048?

Is there anyone in the whole of devRant working with VR, AR, speech or motion detection?
I keep thinking that those were just fads that disappeared, because I'm still to see a single lasting-success product.
It might be temporary, someone might invent motion control that actually works or an Alexa that does not suck (unless you speak English with an toothpaste-commercial accent), or a non-goofy AR set.
But if not a single dev in devRant is working with it, it does not seem likely.7 -
