*at my study a year or longer ago*
Classmate: hey linuxxx, could you come take a look? What is this? *points at screen towards some code*
Me: you don't see it?!
Cm: no...?!
Me: you really don't see it?!
Cm: no!!?
Me: no for real, do you *REALLY* not see it?!
Cm: NO! TELL ME ALREADY!
Me: that's a screen 😊
Cm: 😑😠

I modeled layout of my living room in VR. Now I can take a seat on my couch without taking off my headset :D13

Jesus, this took so much work...
My university has started Swift lectures but my god their Mac minis are really crappy so I decided I would install Mac on my PC.
How can an operating system take so much fucking work to even boot!16 -
This made my day so much! (The stickers quality is awesome by the way, much better than I expected)14

Today I'm going to work on my side project that I haven't touched in weeks.
I want to utilize Angular 2 which means I'll need to learn TypeScript. I also want to use the new .Net Core and EF Core 1.0. Oh and I want to handle authentication using JWT!
Wow, that's gonna be a lot of effort to get things off the ground... maybe instead I'll use this time to learn some new concepts. Maybe watch this episode of Fun Fun Function, or maybe this video on writing Assembly code for an app on Raspberry Pi, that sounds cool!
Actually, you know I should really teach myself dependency injection and unit testing for once. I'm so behind the times.
Well, really I should finish this book on design patterns first. Ok, where did I leave off? Page 20 I think... ehh... maybe I'll just work on my side project.
Tomorrow... tomorrow, I'll work on my side project.9 -
So python, who knew it could automate a lot of crappy tasks 😎
Actually I did, but god it’s so quick and easy to implement than expected.
I have a new formed respect for python devs after my day of web crawling and ftp transfers and outlook mining 😘7 -
The company I work at have never used Git or any other version control system...
Today I'm working on making everything ready for Git and removing "backup", backup_old", "fileX.php" etc.
In the end, I'll be happy and the company will be happy for the better management and control.5 -
Android oreo made me change so much code and broke so much shit like background services that my latest branch in git is FuckAndroidOBranch6

MY SISTER (the LibrOffice OS one) GOT ME A MUDAFUCKING RASPBERRY PI 3 😍😍😍😍
Now what to do with it 🤔13 -
Today’s achievement: my phone didn’t autocorrect ‘fucking’ to ‘ducking’.
Clearly it’s as pissed off as I am about receiving shitty emails from the other team manager in my dept giving me and my team work to do and throwing us under the bus when he does jack shit all day except read BBC news and go on Facebook. On the odd occasion he does actually do work, it’s not good work, it’s riddled with bugs because he’s ‘too senior to need a code peer review’. Such a fucktard...
Oh, and the work he’s asked us to do technically sits in his team so I’ll be firing that straight back at him 😁
I’m all for being a team player and helping each other but I’m going to protect my team over helping someone. The gloves are about to come off....3 -
Some years ago I was in cyber security in the military being shown some new tech for our use. Was challenged to try and get past it after being explained it's basics. Took me one long line in Linux about 10 seconds.
Anomaly detection firewall with machine learning seemed like a good idea.
Setting it to aggressive response and then change the package header to the firewall's own address however made it kill itself.
We didn't deploy that firewall that I know of.5 -
SOMEONE PLEASE JUST TELL ME:
HOW DO I STOP BEING SO FUCKING AWKWARD!!!!!!!! Tell me please, i swear to you. My life would be so much better if i wasn’t so awkward and have social anxiety. Tell me what to do because i’m tired of it, i hate it so much.42 -
Don't you just love it when you're waiting on a team member in a different country to push code that you NEED to be able to finish your job, but you know they've already gone home for the night and you're stuck reading the same three doc pages for your entire day at work? Because I sure do
-
Kid brings me an ancient Chromebook with non-functioning "t" key.
I crack open the case and remove a bunch of screws trying to get to the keyboard.
No can do. This thing is built to basically self-destruct upon user tampering (Dammit, China!!!)
Put it all back together with the intent of trying to wipe it and recycle it.
The "t" key is suddenly working fine.3 -
Designer: "And you know what we could do? We could make all the information be available anywhere the client wants. It's all in the cloud!"
PM: "Yeah! That's brilliant!" (High fives all around)
That's one day after a visit to a client saying they cannot rely on their internet connection. -
Why must it be that school interferes with coding and coding interferes with school? I learn so much more outside school with computers these days, and it's so much more interesting!3

When you're stuck on the same error for so long, you try so many different things and by the time you get it to work, it feels like you've made so much progress. But once you take a step back you realize you really haven't done much.4
-
My head hurts so much right now...
So there's a beautiful hilarious woman next door and we're getting really close (friend close), but she's 26 and she's just messing with my head so much, wtf is going off???77 -
Have I ever mentioned how much TypeScript compensates for JavaScript's Lack of being statically typed?
It's. So. Much. Better.8 -
Facebook has changed so much.
There was a time when we were so connected and had so much fun there with friends. Now it’s mostly about videos and ads. That’s all I see when I scroll. I hate it now.7 -
Who here is programming with React Native and is crying about it?
It's so volatile. Shit it has done so far:
- Randomly changed my IP location that it serves to and npm start that shows the welcome information keeps the old IP address, so I spent way too long trying to figure out why it wasn't working.
- Constantly having to rm -rf the node modules and npm i them because Expo randomly starts loading so slowly that you want to scream.
- Downgrading my react-native-scripts version in the package.json because it hangs forever on the starting packager.
- I also had to downgrade my expo dependencies because during one of my node module reinstalls, it would update the version and apparently Expo is incompatible with its own updated version.
And now I'm randomly getting an error that's apparently a known bug in one of the react dependencies and now I have to downgrade that as well.
Just. Why.9 -
Turning my 27" monitor vertically was the smartest thing I did all year.
There's so much space now that just using it makes me happy!
That only drawback is the 1080p horizontal resolution which is not enough for many sites to fit without zooming out.
I feel like I will soon persuade myself to buy a 4K monitor...4 -
When you realize you had sharpening enabled in your monitor settings and you turn it off and shit just looks so much better...
I mean this is a necessary setting when using VGA but this monitor is connected via DVI!
Also some people just do not seem to notice this and leave this enabled on their screens.4 -
I am good to the programs I use.
I give the all the needed ram.
Except Android Studio, I don’t have a fucking server.7 -
*right click on image*
[nothing happens]
*spams right click, thinking about getting a new mouse*
[small modal shows up: "this content is protected!"]
*laughs in developer's console*
I never thought I'd get to see a website that "protects" its content by disabling right click, I'm moved :')3 -
Why is flutter so unbelievably awesome?
It makes development soooo much quicker and easier compared to native java/kotlin/swift...so much simpler on so many levels, that it still feels somehow ..*wrong*...to me....10 -
"Stop spending so much time on the computer, there so much more to life than just a screen." ok mum.1

I bought a new laptop yesterday and just fell like superheroes at the end on movies when they find out exactly how powerful they are and what real power tastes like :D
Moving from 4gb to 8gb of RAM and a to a working battery i just bliss :)4 -
Joined as an Intern at an MNC, There was an issue with creating the account so a ticket was raised. Now to view the ticket, I have to log in the account :)1

Aaaaaw fuck yea. I'm finally at my mother's, for my first holidays since late December 2017, and I FINALLY can sleep as much as I want without being bothered. I just slept 30+ hours in 3 days, which is close to what I sleep in a week. Still tired though, but I feel so much more relaxed than the evening I arrived at my mom's place 3 days ago *.*

Does time tracking makes you anxious? I just had a small project for a fixed price(no time tracking) and I felt so much less anxiety while working. This one ticking clock makes my work so much stressful.8

My Anxiety: 📈4 -
Not sure if this should be a proper rant about the reasons behind this, or a simple 'so much win' situation..
CTO asked how I'm doing with task xy.. my answer: mostly should be fixed, but I'm trying to figure out this zz thing.. It is so fucked up, I can't make sense of it.. before I could really finish the sentence CTO was like: shut up, don't tell me about it, we know, just please fix it..can you fix it? Please say yes..and don't talk about this anymore.. 😂😂😂6 -
I deleted over a petabyte worth of snapshots from AWS today.
As a data hoarder this feels like genocide.5 -
So at work, there is this class/model thing that's for storing translated strings. It also supports n-level nested macros, cascading lookup (e->d->c->b->a->blank), and I've added transforms too. The code is a bloody mess and very inefficient (legendary dev's code), but it's useful.
You call methods with a symbol representing one of the strings, and it does... whatever you ask, like return text, booleans, expand macros and submacros, pass in data to interpolate, etc.
But I just learned something today.
Its `.html` method... doesn't support html. In fact, calling it strips out all html, takes whatever is left, and attempts to convert that back into html. Because that makes so much sense. So, if you have an html string? Don't call html on it.
Also, macros use the same <angle brackets> as html tags, and macro expansion eats unknown macros, so... you can't mix html and macros, meaning you cannot inject values into your markup. That's a freaking joy to work around. (You end up writing a parser every time.)
So no, if you have an html string, you need to get the raw data out and handle it yourself. Don't reach for that shiny .html method; it'll just ruin your day.
It's the little things that make my day so terribly long.rant it really isn't so bad principle of most surprise poor design but it could be ever so much better8 -
Update to https://devrant.com/rants/1415880/...
After numerous emails back and forth my colleague finally came to the conclusion that the customers WSUS is responsible (i might accidentally forgot to mention that in my original mail, oops :) ) but also blamed one of my other colleagues for enabling deduplication on the servers so he can't reliably tell wherever a hard drive is full. (??!?)
But anyway, no beeing sorry for him beeing wrong and impulsively blaming and disabling my scripts, because of course he's not.
I really god damn hate this guy. Were it not for this beeing devRant with a focus on devs i'd have a lot more stories of this special snowflake.1 -
Class about to end, instructor announces quiz. Looks at friend, sees him opening up algo app on his phone playing all algorithms in simulation mode 😂
-
I'm trying to work on my first full stack project and been looking a lot up for it.
Dear god there's so many options and everyone says theirs is the best so I look it up and so many of them have absolute trash documentation.
Honestly at this point I've spent more time finding different peices to make the service than actually developing my service or ideas.
I really need to convince a couple friends to help me with this... -
Aggravated after having pointed a remote coworker at documentation that would speed along some development he was assigned to do, only to find weeks later, and several "talking past each other" conversations later, that he had disregarded it or severely misunderstood it and went his own route. Showed him today how something was done under what I supposed he had been doing and he reveals he "didn't know" it was to be done that way.1

Why does a developer carry so much intense pressure on his shoulders?
And why does the client make so much alterations 😥😥😥4 -
Why is it so hard to find backend Java developers?
So much work to do... so few people to do it with... -_-11 -
It's so refreshing to find a place with so much discourse that hasn't been overrun with memes...#$%&!1
-
So on top of having way too many hats at work and starting my master’s studies in a few weeks, I just had an idea for a game that’s too good to not start working on. I am drowning myself in shit to do. Again.

Feeling the need to know everything about web dev (frontend for now) already yesterday, though not having a clue, what to look at first, as it's its own universe. Everything has a million ways of implementation, combination and features worth looking at.
Already have worked with basic HTML, CSS and JS, had a short look a Typescript, being confronted with React Typescript + Redux + thunk, SASS, learned some basics of all.
Feeling lack of motivation to build smth to learn, yet I want to explore. Afraid to get stuck in tutorial hell, although I know, changing smth here and there in the projects is a must for learning. Feeling the lack of understanding the bits and pieces of what can be styled with CSS in which way. Understanding how npm, webpack, the strange parts of JS, ES6, work.
So ... freaking ... much ....2 -
I'm in my first year of college, it's so much work and I just feel so tired but I'm really loving it (I just get bothered by how my classmates talk so much BS on our whatsapp group). nothing like some dig dug to relax2
-
Why is there so much hatred for people who use spaces instead of tabs?
I use tabs out of habit but I don't understand why people have to fucking hate the ones who use spaces so much13 -
I was just thinking about life and stuff and damn I play too much minesweeper, IDK why I like it so much -_-4
-
Had a lab for class that asked for something super simple in Java. All you had to do was submit your source code when it was done, go through some test conditions, and if it passed you were free to go. I finished the work in 10 minutes, yet spent the next 40 trying in vain to submit it. The work was fine, I knew it was right, but no matter what I changed, the damn thing wouldn't accept my work. After countless attempts and changes, getting the professor herself over there looking at it, I finally figured it out.
I was submitting the class file by mistake.
Some errors are harder than others, I guess. -
So I am wondering. Am I the only one who finds IBM to be a piece of crap that has slow services? I hate them so much, in that they have added so much time to my work!1
-
I don’t get why ARM assembly is so much clunkier than it should be. It could’ve been so much more readable and easy to write in if more dev-friendliness was built into the syntax.14
-
Why is there so much hate towards Manjaro Linux and so much love towards Antergos ? I mean, it's still Arch, right ?
It's just that Manjaro has its own repos but you can still use AUR.3 -
I've seen a lot a of rate regards WordPress. I understand that if the client doesn't need a CMS WordPress is not relevant, but is there any overall better CMS then?13
-
I hate so much all those sprint related meetings. They literally take one day totalled (every 2 weeks).
Review, dry run demo, actual demo, planning, daily hourly meetings.... so much talking.8 -
So much to read, so much to learn.. !!! Then by the time I actually get it down and have a job interview, I'll be ******** bricks. Lol.
-
Not too long ago I bought 3 monitors. Now I have my IDE on the center, console and debugger (and devrant) on the left, git and music on the right. Still figuring out the best arrangement for all windows but this already feels awesome!3
-
Wow old MS, just wow. Why running ASP.NET with VS in W7 on my potato laptop absolutely annihilates it, but running ASP.NET Core with VSCode (in UNIX) is blazingly fast?
-
on one hand - softlayer is way less intuitive than aws...
on the other hand - when your boss tells you you can bring up up to $1000 monthly valued servers, you can forget about the first hand1 -
There's so much money in technology right now and so much easy success ... and so much poor quality code that is good enough ... that people can not only "function" in rolls they aren't qualified for ... but can excel and even be promoted through the ranks without ever becoming actually functional.
-
Spent the day figuring out how to maintain injected dependencies in scope when they're requested asynchronously later in the pipeline and then be able to clean it up later without having any lifecycle hooks to use.
Seriously considered switching DI frameworks before I just added an event when it's OK to dispose of the scope and I think it's finally working (without the memory leaks it had before).
Who else has to try something every possible way before you can be satisfied? -
A tangible result to my code gives me so much satisfaction - this and probl solving is probably the reason I love it so much
-
I dont know where to start learning aws. I dont know what is enough to be learned here. Theres SO much shit to learn. SO much stuff going on. Where do i start to learn aws for dev?3
