Front end + back end = Project finished.
This is my first full stack application that I spent a month working on. It's a basic database that holds car information and saves it to a SQL db. I built this using Java Spring/Hibernate for my backend and Node.JS/REACT for my front end. Mariadb handles SQL requests. REACT handles token requests for secure login, that was the hardest part of this whole thing.
I was going to comment on how frequently I feel like garbage and an inadequate excuse of a human being, but today is my birthday and this is the best gift I could get, a finished project from scratch.
I'm 29 today devRant. And I work over the weekend before going back to school, but at least I fucking finished something that I started.
...thanks, for everything. 😄14 -

I met a senior node.js developer for the first time and had a talk with him, really, I did not know how junior I was until I talked with him, everything he told me about node was just amazing, I mean, I describe myself as a good developer but he has the knowledge I would like to have someday, I loved node since I met the runtime and I follow many node/js programmers that are really good at it and I admire them, but having the opportunity to have an hour and something talk with one of them was really amazing and gave me more reasons to succeed and how to take that place, well I have to say this as per what I've already write -> nohomo5 -

There's much I was working on the past weeks. First of all some of you may know I don't work in IT and therefore always am learning how to make things easier in my workspace with tech. And my boss once told me how annoyed he is converting stuff to PDF for easier sending via mail.
Then I started to build PDF converter with
PHP and the Laravel framework. My first steps into it succeeded and I could even deploy my Pdf-wizard website, but everything feels like a hustle and making this application bigger don't really seems like a enjoyable task for me.
I tried the same stuff with Node.js then. It was damn good. It was simple, because there are plenty of packages wich do this tasks on NPM. Afterwards I spent some time on doing research and ended up learning Express Framework.
This brought new inspiration to me and I wanted to share this with you guys.1 -
I started learning Node.js this morning. Wow, mind blown.
I can see how I could use this in an existing web development project.
What are the barriers to using Node.js instead of something else? Are there support/performance issues?24 -
Just start to use VSCode from sublime, and found out , I have wasted so much time on only using "console.log" as my main node.js debug weapon. ( Or I am still a dummy for Sublime )3

I just watched a talk given by Ryan Dahl, highlighting what he considers to be some early design mistakes with Node:
- Removed early version of Promises
- Not sandboxed by default
- GYP compiler
- package.json
- node_modules
- require() without extension
- index.js by default

Also, his new project Deno sounds like Node 2.0. Interesting!4 -
Godmotherfuckingshitpissballs fuck software development. Seriously wtf.
I learned c# and Unity for 4 fuckin years. Now I want to learn Electron and i just cant get it to fuckin work that motherfucker!
Installed node.js into a folder on my Desktop, git cloned the quick start app, copied the files, npm start and wow it starts.
ONCE.
It does not start anymore wtf? Also the stupid tutorials that I bought dont fuckin explain how to set it up properly wtf...
Doesnt help that im a windows noob and the guy in the tutorial is a macSnob.
Goddamnit I hate this phase of learning stuff. It fuckin sucks.
Also software development is around for like what? 30 years and electron is the best solution for GUI that people came up with? Fuck me.30 -

The JavaScript everywhere trend.
Sure it's possible and the language develops at a fast pace since ES6 but JS like any other language just is not suited for everything. I think JS will stay in server side automation and as scripting language for customisation but not how it is abused now in electron or even node.js.
There will be better solutions if they are not already there.10 -
It's so fucking frustrating to see new frameworks and languages come out every day that do the same old shit just in a much worse way with just a prettier paint job applied to them. I wish people focused on solving actual problem and getting expertise in the core tech rather than just promoting frameworks and languages and all that shit. The way I see it, software engineering hasn't changed much in last 30 years. Fundamentals are still the same. They just keep slapping new labels on old tech and just push developers to adopt them, which would have been fine if they had made our lives any easier. But what they actually end up doing is just going backwards and making things unnecessarily complicated and slow and tedious. The end result should be to build products and build them well and not care about what latest tech that's running the product. It's just so fucking frustrating to see companies asking for node js and react developers or machine learning or AI experts when most of them haven't even flushed out a plan for proper mvp yet. And they don't even know why they are asking for express over laravel or django over rails. Its5 just so fucking stupid and irritating. I am done learning new stuff anymore. And I am done giving interviews for these stupid roles.6

Santa,
All I want for Christmas is to finally have the resources I need to actually make some progress on this project...5 -
I met you in High School. You were called Basic back then. You graduated and moved on to college and you became Visual Basic. Eventually when you became a professional after graduating you changed your name to Visual Studio cause you wanted to be cool. I still understood you then and now.
You were simple, straightforward, and I understood you more than some. But it wasn't enough for you, you wanted more. You started hanging around with others like Python, Ruby, Node.JS and M. That's when I started losing you.
Perhaps I grew old and tired, maybe that's why we drifted apart. I still don't know but I hope you never change again because then I will need to change. And sometimes change can be bad especially when we don't know who will last. We've been together for over 25 years. What's going to happen to us?
I hope to still be seeing you in some form in the future. Until then, Goodbye!4 -

The most frustrating error is logic error. You see no warning or error message. It's just your program doesn't work as expected.
You spend hours inspecting your code, putting var_dump, console.error, print, whatever... in order to figure out what's wrong.
Yet, you still can't find out what's wrong. You decide to take a sleep. And you are waking up while having this uncomfortable feeling in your mind.
And since this is devrant, I'll insert some swearing here:
F*cking dammit node.js... what's wrong with your f*cking logic flow.... non-blocking you said, rotten deep in callback hell damnation you said....1 -

I don't profess to know the whole story, but what is it with the (what seems to me to be) overly-fragile, cry-bully mentality of the Node.js community and its various branches? The current mess is not the first time strongly opinioned, overly zealous loud-mouths have driven the ship.
Throughout the history of time, teams/groups of people have been made up of different characters. Some are nice, some aren't really and everyone has varied characteristics. There seems to be a drive to completely flatten the behaviour, beliefs and attitudes of any sort of gathering, and it makes me so mad. Some people are so obsessed with their ideas of equality, diversity, inclusivity and safe spaces that they can't see how negative and discriminating those attitudes actually are.
I fully accept that certain behaviours should not be tolerated and should be called out. And communities and societies will organically decide what those are.
But when you raise an issue, approach it like grown up and thrash it out to a resolution - don't throw your toys out of the pram and put on a real public show, targeting and scapegoating other individuals when you don't get your way! This is childish and narcissistic. If this is your only course of action, you should realise you haven't a strong argument.
I've ranted here before about how the mainly social media discussions on any subject drive us all to extreme ends. And this is just another example. It's wrong and narrow minded and not remotely progressive - the opposite of what those who should loudest claim to be.3 -

I'm a backend developer and one day my team lead asked me to make a architecture diagram of our system, which he had to put in a PPT and demo it to a client. I did it for 15-20 minutes. Debugging ♡
Taking first steps in Express.js. It's in general the first web framework i've learned so the struggle was greater.
While I was creating a web app, i've noticed that suddenly all of the routes were redirecting to the 404 error page. I was looking for the cause of this issue for an hour just to find this:
route.get ('/ ', ...);
So it seems that just one space sign wasted 1 hour of my day.
Btw, it's my first rant there so 👋 to everyone :)4 -

Generator functions should be treated like sorting algorithms: Not worth your time if all you have is 4 or less async instructions.
Callback hell is actually kind of nice and warm when you're a just a few levels down. If you're really confused by your obfuscated code, you suck at node. -

Node.js, why!? I understand that websites are built on JavaScript so we've been fucked into having to use it without a choice. But why the hell would anyone choose to use JavaScript for backend development? I just finished an interview assessment that required me to use Node.js and it sucked. Granted, I'm not a JavaScript developer, but there was nothing that made me want to go back for more.11

I started this position as a full stack php developer with JavaScript/jquery experience. Within two months the entire platforms being rewritten in node.js with me at lead 😂 . that escalated so quickly but node really does knock a lot of concepts out of the park and has a remarkable community dedicated to making all kinds of things happening (except the meteor community, they can suck a dick).1

Wow, just have to share a story:
A photographer friend of mine asked me to make a program for him to manage shootings and models etc. and since I'm still a cs student and have the time I agreed. To spice things up I decided to learn something new and voilà I used JavaScript (that I never used before) and HTML (which I only know a liiiitle bit) and some CSS (also little experience) and with Electron.js and the help of YouTube and Udemy I created 40% of the program today!
That's exactly what amazes me about programming... You can learn the basic skills in no time and create working things!

I've been creating a new website layout for a small theatre group. I am like how it's coming together :)
It is designed with user interaction in mind because the layout they are using now is... Well, thrown together. It uses images as buttons and I had a few friends of mine ask "Where do I get tickets" and it is not updated regularly.
I plan to automate a few things like for shows, if the show date has passed, it will remove itself from the home page. I also plan to web scrape, if the site permits, some information to be displayed on the show page.
I got to lots to do before I can show them what I've made.3 -

Hey guys.
So, got tired of trying to learn on top of the knee (Portuguese expression) and decided to do some courses to get the basics.
Where do you recommend I go?
1. Course must be free
2. Not over 100 hours per course (I'll have 1 to 2 hours a day if I really focus on it)
What I need:
Language (lvl of knowledge)
- Python (know the basics) + kivy (basics)
- Html (good) + css (basics) + javascript (basics)
- node.js (0)
- Jquery ( 0 ) + Django (0)
I know there's lots of good courses out there and lots of dumb stupid ones, care to give your opinion? Thank you5 -
The only thing that I think works great in Node.js ecosystem is Socket.io
Otherwise anything JavaScript related is too bad for me. So many frameworks releasing each month. First it was React then people said that vue is better... Now hearing Svelte is the best. This shit is going crazy.
Personally I prefer to keep back end in a different language such as PHP or Python. Separation of concerns was a thing some years ago now everything is JS.
Are there other alternatives to Socket.io in other languages which are easy to setup just like Socket.io? XMPP is there but I feel it is overly complicated to get started.8 -
My uncle wants a website for his company. Should I do it in Wordpress, or do you know any other, better CMS? Node.js would be awesome :)15

Its sad to see the original creator of Node.js killing it for good.
Ryan Dahl had the guts to agree what he did wrong while building Node.js and some of the decisions which stays even today as irreversible. Hats off for him for bring everything to light and working again towards a solution using deno!
Which uses typescript and with a lot more optimized features, still in development tho.
Alot of people still loves node, including me, but do you guys really think it will last longer?

@ everyone who keeps pushing Vue via node
Vue via npm:
- shit
- bundling so you can save 15% on car insurance
- webpack/etc to condense your 50TB node_modules folder
- have to deploy, if you're in the US then it'll probably be in the middle East or maybe North Korea if that falls out
Vue via script tag:
- works awesome
- pretty feckin fast
- can be deployed purely static
- easy debugging from dev console
- easy templating for frontend
- can use existing html/css
- easy to work in teams with people without having everyone install npm
- if you have a designer they will love you for making it easy to style things
- you can cache it and make it offline without any of the new bullshit vuex
- you can use vanilla libraries without a mixin, polyfill, bundler, or etc anus -

TLDR: I'm switching between many webstacks and its starting to hinder my progress. What is the best stack to use with bootstrap?
Ok, guys I really need your help with this.
Currently, I'm working on a bootstrap page and it requires more dynamic pieces to work. It has become frustrating to continue moving on from where I'm standing and thus I would like to switch it up a little. I'm not used to dealing with several languages at once. Right now, I'm pulling data from the server with PHP, and I'm trying to quickly pick up AJAX to update data asynchronously in the page. However, the problem I'm running into now is how do I connect everything within my page in a coherent way that doesn't become a disjointed mess?
My question is in order to start building a dynamic bootstrap website --that communicates with a server to get data-- what can I do to keep myself sane and make everything a little more organized?5 -

So I am making a real time chat app using MERN and socket.io but I was disappointed to discover that the newer version of socket.io ie 2.2.0 fails overtime on Chrome.

I have never really used node.js, only on windows to help develop a chrome plugin, but trying to do the same thing on Linux, omfg, how is it this bad?
On Windows I just ran the alias "npm start" and is figured out that it needed to install a bunch of stuff, did it and continued compiling.
On Linux I just got one missing dependencie after another... How is it that different?9 -
2 o clock (night) and i need to hand in a deliverable tomorrow, all small extras are implemented only the main feature not. I was so focused on perfecting everything i forgot functionality. At least it looks fantastic

I wrote a few related libraries for our app that literally every single one of the several hundred requests a second we receive goes through, and everytime there is a bug I always blame those libraries first... even though they are excellently unit and integration tested. Today i started the third "re-write" to cleanup the code and get some piece of mind. Will be pissed / relieved when the bug is somewhere else.

So I was working on a web scraper to basically download all listings with detailed info from a e-shop to my database for some analysis.
And I completely forgot throttling which is quite important when writing such things in node.js.
It's funny how in other languages you try to figure out how to make your application faster and in node you're trying to make it slower 😄
Anyhow, I apparently hit the poor site with 5000+ simultaneous requests, all of which hit their database (to gather product info). Suffice to say, the site got visibly slow 🤣
Thankfully I print out where each request is made so I quickly realised my mistake and killed the process.
Now I hope no-one comes knocking on my door lol

Could somebody please help me understand why the fucking hell does JS (I am talking about node.js, so backend) use 32bit integers in setTimeout and setInterval? I mean, I understand most of the choices regarding the language (I have chosen programming languages design and principles for my studies) and I am happily using it for almost 4 years. But I came across an occasion that I had to use big numbers in those functions and it took me a lot of time to figure out why the fuck my code was not working as it was supposed to.
If anyone has a good reason please elaborate. In the meantime I'll go punch some shit to calm down.10 -
Looking into the source code of safe-eval. So, despite of it's name, safe-eval doesn't use eval at all.
vm.runInNewContext
And it's gonna be funny to see some people start to think, "oh it's not eval, it's not evil then" :D :D17 -
Quick disclaimer, it is easily googlable, but no matter where I search, I can't find a solution. This is why I'm trying here.
Okay, so the other day, I was trying to install the node package sqlite3, and it spat out errors all day long from the node-pre-gyp native module and from the node-gyp native module. I am using the latest LTS (as of 5/10/2018), and I can't get any answers on HOW TO FIX IT...! Please HALP ASAP!12 -

Mother of dev. This story is from my beginning with Node.js, some months ago.
WHY THE FUCK EVERY TUTORIAL AND GUIDE PASTES CODE WITHOUT FUCKING EXPLAINING IT?
Ended out literally parsing github to understand simple concepts.
Fuck you, I didn’t pay online classes to copy/pastes. -
I am SO lazy I can spend the full day looking for a specific tiny npm module that solves a specific problem like concatenating two files.
While doing it by hand would take me 30 minutes and 20 lines of code.1 -
Hey guys passport authentication seems so cool in node, its a little bit hard to learn though...i will work on it today and try to create a demo project on it :) , traversy media has this great tutorial on it2

Even though I'm learning Node.js, I'm still a little confused about the distinction between Node and frontend JavaScript.
Where does frontend JavaScript end, and Node begin? What are the practical distinctions between the two?5 -
So I moved my full-stack in-progress web application to a docker container to ease development, and it's certainly accomplished that. I can simultaneously run a SQL database, node.js, java, and a Linux server all within my Linux operating system. It's like a mini vm. And when I need to deploy I just deploy it directly with Heroku, no configuring a host manually.
In a way I'm happy with this because it makes both development and deployment much easier, but I'm also sad because I'm basically admitting that I don't have the resources to both learn full-stack and be a linux server wiz.
Has IT gotten so big and complex that you have to compromise how much you can learn at a given time? It seems my limit is at learning 2 languages and 2 frameworks at a time. 😵1 -
Accepting to work at a place that requires "extra hours worked as required" with any form of overtime being unpaid.
Thankfully I enjoy the people I work with so it's not all doom and gloom.

i know im nerding out but this alone is one of the reasons i think node is byfar the greatest platform to write an app on. In one line, it checks how many cpus your machine has, makes sure your running currently on a master process and not a child spawn, forks child processes for each core you have so that your now running a cluster of node.js servers (one per cpu sharing the same port) and then spins up the server. Its brilliant! And even though your writing simple javascript thats easy to understand, your also thinking about low level mechanics of server functionalityrant brilliant underestimated it would take 7 more classes in c# node.js javascript try this in php try this in c#5 -
I often get posed the option of using Go or Node, personally I think they’re both good languages and that they both have different purposes. But I was just wondering, what’s the sentiment on DevRant?9

Why do people use express router? They can just fucking use app.get and app.post, why fucking add an additional variable and use router.get and router.post?
Can someone explain this to me? I don't fucking get it.1 -
Was using node for a side project, but then I was like ehhh I could finish this but using js on the backend is kinda sad, and ive worked with Django before so I figured oh maybe, python would be a step above js, but still not satisfied. I started following a guide for PHP and doing research and I almost vomited. Then I start following a guide for Ruby on Rails, which I am now wondering where the fuck ive been ignoring it for years. Now I'm "on rails" and typing this on a train teeheeehee6

What are you suggestion/ advice for a newbie to TDD and testing in general?

So been doing a freelance project for the past week, small backend API with a front-end, thought I'll give react.js a shot and actually learn it (know a bit of the basics) so using MERN including tailwindcss.
Built the API in a few days, quick and easy. Down to react, not going to lie. Once you dive into it, it's really nice to use. Just tackled a contact form and a few dynamic pages using props, state etc today. Now onto the rest of the site including the the Dashboard to CRUD records.
Still have a lot to learn. But given what I've learned so far. Don't see it taking too much longer.
Famous last words though 😅 -
I am now one with strapi as it is one with me. On a text to feature basis with cofounder. Doesn’t get any sweeter then that. Headless node cms for the win!

When ry finally speaks again for node, especially with all the rants he has to say to every single one in charge of the node foundation, I almost cried.
You have no idea how bad I hate Isaacs and the negative impact he made to the community and JavaScript as a language.
I like Fedor though. -
Considering using a node.js based library for a simple interface on an embedded ARM system. I have zero experience with node.js. At the very least I will use this as a test rig outside of the embedded system.
How much space will a minimal node.js server take?
Note: If its in the gigs my guess is this will be too large for our system.10 -

Is there any stable Node.js framework that is convention based? My problem is everytime I begin a new project I have to think of the folder structure, packages to use etc. I looked into AdonisJS which seems to be what I need but then there are so many opinions on the internet regarding how it uses custom require mechanism instead of going ES6 style modules and how it is small and this will be no future proof . Tried Next.js and there seems to be steep learning curve. Any advices?2

How do you guys concentrate for a long time? Do you use a timer or what do you do. I get a hard time concentrating more then 30 minutes. After that it's hard to get back into the flow.3

I work in a team that's predominately ASP.NET MVC when it comes to web development. We're merging with another government agency 's development and they're using Node.js.
So I figure that I should make an effort and learn Node.js as I've only had minimal exposure to it.
After five minutes discover that corporate proxy prevents access to npm. Oh well, never mind!4 -

Guys. I'm doing a fairly large scale which will need to serve a few thousands of customers. It's the first time I'm planning to deploy an express node.js to VPS. Want to ask you, shall I look for VPS which have support to MongoDB, or is it okay to use atlas - MongoDB cloud for the user database? I feel a bit weird about having the server on one cloud and the DB on another one. Or is it normal nowadays?7

Finally! Oderland supports node.js for all accounts. Huzza! If only I had time to give it a try. Well, soon enough. Unlike many other ranters, I have actually nothing against PHP. It's just that with node.js it's *one* language for the server and client alike :) I like a lot the idea of coding even the server side in javascript.

Paid brain.js for some time already because it is so awesome that I feel bad not to.
Then this is a random day that I want to know more about the back story of it, turns out the original author @harthur had such a bad experience on the open source world.
Double-downing on this is that she singlehandedly made 3 of my most favourite packages which is too cute to forget since Node.js has came about.
My gawd, what have people done?2 -

i had it written like this :
F.route('/admin_page', view_admin_page, ['authorize, @admin']); -

Question.
I have a java app to monitor and send aprox every 3seconds a json with data to a client who will present it on a single fancy display, there will not be other clients ever, only this single one. Shall I go websockets and push the data, and wait for it there or shall I go rest and ask for the data every 3 seconds? Im planning to use node on the client regardless of the solution. ?7 -
the questions not "how to make an express app" but "how to structure an express app". Here a whole bunch of cool plug and play utilities to build an api. Also heres a generator that generates 5 files and 2 directories for you. If you need help we have 5 pages of documentation.

The other day i made a rant saying that having an index.js as entry point is misleading, in my opinion. it could have been implemented in so many and better ways but that's what we have because that's what the nodejs creator decided to do.
My previous rant wasn't well seen because everybody was saying that index js it's actually a good thing.
So I started to do some research because I've an important experience in software architecture and i was trying to understand why people couldn't get my point. Fortunately i found that even the creator of node itself regrets his choice to use a file as an entry point for modules and imports. You can have a look at the video, that is also really interesting, here: https://youtu.be/M3BM9TB-8yA2 -

Kind of a silly question, but I never worked with SSR before. Isn't server-side rendering with JS frameworks like Next.js or Nuxt.js, like using a View in PHP (MVC for example), but instead of rendering that view directly you just return the HTML from your API and your front-end renders it? Feels awfully complicated to map styles to that HTML.2

luasocket decided to provide blocking network primitives to be used in single threaded lua environments. Sure I can overcome it with socket select polling, promises and coroutines. But WTF. It is 2016! Even node.js does it better.

I went to create an attributions page for my node.js app I am working on. I just had it parse the packages used. Ran out of memory trying to display them in a browser.
Man I included 1 (uno) package and the dependencies are crazy. First thing I did was install license-checker to make sure I wasn't shooting myself in the foot with some random GPL/LGPL package.
So, I guess I am learning about node.js a bit this week. -
