Yesterday's JR web dev interview:
👨🏻💻: Experience?
👶: Well JS, pyhton, UX Design and bit of Sass.
👨🏻💻: Feel like you'll have a hard time learning PHP?
👶: Well if it needs to be PHP, I can learn it.. Are you using a certain CMS?
👨🏻💻: Cool, good. Yeah we're using WordPress and need to support our sites for IE8.
👶:... Well.. ehm.. *runs away and screams in panic 💨*20 -
2010: PHP, CSS, Vanilla JS, and a LAMP Server.
Ah, the simple life.
2016: Node.js, React, Vue, Angular, AngularJS, Polymer, Sass, Less, Gulp, Bower, Grunt.
I can't handle this, I'm shifting domains to Machine Learning.
2017: Numpy, Scipy, TensorFlow, Theano, Keras, Torch, CNNs, RNNs, GANs and LOTS AND LOTS OF MATH!
Okay, okay. Calm down there fella.
JavaScript doesn't seem that complicated now, does it? 🙈14 -
I'm converting some old stylesheets to sass and found this gem. How drunk I must have been to write something like this o.012

There is SAS (Language)!
There is SAAS (Software as a Service) !!!
There is SASS ( Css Coding )!!!

Hey man can you fix my tv, computer, toaster, phone, or hack this phone i found, can you hack me a wifi, can you make me a website/app i have a really good idea. (For free of course)
Hey man you only need a good idea for an app then become rich.
(Insert countless of other retarded requests here)
Someone kill me6 -
When you build a beautiful set of Sass files with grunt/gulp tasks, hand it off to another developer who makes all their changes in the compiled css.3

I'm looking for a new job.

I've been working on updates to a react app for a few hours today. Everything's been peachy except this shit job, this inane change demand list, my headache, my lack of quiet places to work, ... okay, so basically everything is terrible. But I've done lots of builds, and made lots of progress.
Then suddenly: my build script failed. 30 seconds after a successful build, with no (tooling) changes in between.
Reason? Incorrect version of Sass.
How? Fucking npm.
Isn't package-lock.json supposed to prevent this crap?

I have bank accounts with 5 different banks.
I HAVE TO use 4-5 different government websites.
Every fucking place: you cannot use these "~-/;^"(some others too) symbols in your password.
Are you freaking fucking kidding me!! And all of them have a limit of 12or15 characters.
If this wasn't mind numbingly stupid enough, they fucking go ahead and force you to change password every fucking month or two.
THIS IS NOT SECURITY. YOU SHOULDN'T FORCE SOMEONE TO LIMIT THERE PASSWORDS TO:
- CERTAIN CHARACTERS
- A 15 CHARACTER SIZE LIMIT
- THRN OVERTHAT, FORCE TO CHANGE PASSWPRDS PERIODICALLY.

at a recent interview:
🕴️ interviewer: are you familiar with PHP?
Jr Me 👶: well I'm currently studying it but I thought this was a front end position? I'm looking to work with js, sass and UI design.
🕴️: Well PHP is frontend and we are working with it in our CMS.
👶:... *Getting weird WordPress flashbacks*.. I think I'll continue looking but thanks for your offer.
Later that day I checked if their websites have wp-login.php and woop de fucking doo... It does.. as well as all their clients sites..
Dodging bullets like the freaking Choose one! Ps. Second time this happens.. gotta start checking this before going to the interview..6 -
I've always just done CSS on my own by hand for every project because I thought it would improve my skills over time but now I've discovered Bulma with it's sass variables and responsiveness and things are just so pretty now, I never want to go back9

When every time your coworker start a new project, they just use the template out of the box including the sass, less and other unused dependencies eventhough they don’t use it2

Yesterday I got a pretty straight-forward task of fixing SASS linting errors from our project. I thought, "How many errors could there be?" Turns out there were just around 2000 errors across 109 files!
I was almost like, "Man, this is going to take a lot of my time!"
So, I started fixing the errors one-by-one with my headphones on and switching music genres after every 2 hours.
After almost 6 hours of continuous bug-fixing, my mind kind of became repellant to the possibility of the outer world and my fingers automatically fell on the right keys in almost no time. My brain was functioning like a computer itself.
And after the end of 7 hours, I reduced the number to less than 1000 errors.
Today, I continued the task and found out that there were some scoping errors I made yesterday (web developers would know this pain of '&').
And after working for almost 6 hours today, I got the number down to 500.
Not a rant, but I felt extremely content with what I did today.
I guess every day is not just about programming, sometimes, it's also about making your code better.
Thanks for reading! :)6 -
Last night I nearly finished my portfolio site. I was working on the perfect framework and workflow like forever. But in the end I accomplished a pretty pleasing solutions. For the back-end I choose Laravel with it's built in rest-api, the front-end is managed by Vue. I'm also proud of my assets-management which is handled by Gulp + Webpack (Laravel Mix). But here I decided to run Gulp on images, fonts and CSS and let Webpack bundle the JavaScript.
And what really crawls my balls is that I can write Sass and Jade, even use partials and organized the shit out of this website, and let Gulp just vomit some minified HTML and CSS on the other end.
Man that feels so good.20 -
have deleted the last rant as it was depressing and stuff and i don't want to depress you lovely people 🤗.

We are generating electricity out of thin air.
We are generating it through light.
We are generating it through flowing water.
We can generate it when humans freaking move.
We can freaking feel the virtual stuff(latest SmarterEveryday upload).
But we still have freaking powercuts 😤😖😠😭.
P.S. : I Love you, you beautiful devrant people😊. My headache disappeared after reading a few rants😁.7 -
When this year started I didn't have much knowledge of server side programming as web developer, only thing I knew was html/css. But this year I got started with:
- PHP
- Framework Phalcon (PHP)
- Javascript (jQuery, NodeJS, react)
- SASS (I can't without it anymore)
- Virtual Hosts (local development)
- Command Line stuff either in macOs and linux ubuntu
This is a huge deal for me because I always got laughed at I only wrote CSS and couldn't write anything else.
So knowledge-wise it was the most productive year ever.
Also, devRant helps me get through the day lately. Thank you for being a part of it!6 -

Breakup really kills the mood to work for a long time eh?
I have a multiplayer minesweeper project in the works. It's great, everything is super slick. Using SASS, Node.JS, MVC design, WebGL... It's a super great, modern project and I am very proud of it.
But I just can't continue it. I open my editor and I just ignore it. I play video games, go outside... Anything except code. It hurts to see myself do this.
I have some great designs for it. You're allowed to play anonymously or logged in. VS mode and everything.
I was going to share the discord link when I launched the alpha... But I think maybe I need to start building a community now so that I can gain my motivation back.
Before the breakup I worked on it daily. I was learning new technologies left and right (SASS being the largest, and WebGL is the next frontier)
It hurts to see. Today after I get off work maybe I will try harder.8 -
My best experience was going from static HTML and non-preprocessed CSS to having my mind blown by Sass & learning JavaScript and what "API" even means (and starting on ruby and basics in command line). I actually feel like I'm a developer in some sense of the word.
That was a ton of growth in a year where I transitioned from a purely graphic design role to having an influence over development processes and rolled out a number of projects to production that I spearheaded.2 -
Dear coworker,
We have a very nice SASS setup so WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU POLLUTING OUR HTML WITH INLINE STYLES!?!?!? It's not like it's even necessary to use inline in this case, I can achieve the same thing by just moving your styling to the scss files. So I ask again, WHY THE FUCK???
Sincerely,
A mildly pissed person who hates front-end dev work3 -

Linux used to be primarily for developers.
But with most software people use becoming browser based (mail, slack, chat, docs, drive etc.) and with Ubuntu UI becoming progressively more user friendly, most lay people can now comfortably switch over to Linux.
Especially for startups for whom Windows licenses feel expensive. Our startup did the same.8 -

Spent 4 hours debugging a “button” styling, worked fine locally but not on production.!
After striking out “cache” issues, “browser” versions, “fonts”, “sass errors” the error was with a stupid chrome extension that appended a css class attribute to the “HTML” tag 😡
And the other developer thought that was a part of what was written in the code !!

Why does node-sass have such garbage documentation?!
I've now spent over an hour trying to get a clear and concise answer to how that shit works, and what do I get? This: (see picture)
I don't know what any of that means, nor do they care to tell me.
I don't want to render this shit at runtime, I want it to compile the sass code when I make changes to it so my app doesn't get boggled down by unnecessary background processes.
But nooo of course not.
To top it off, the "easy" electron-compile solution doesn't even fucking compile because all its dependencies are either outdated or 404 on me. 😡
It's shit like this that makes me hate web-style development. Lacking documentation and people who just assume everything is logical and clear from the start. It's fucking not.4 -

So, my crush told me how she lost her 800+ bookmarks related to her very crucial project (She isn't into computers). I told her she could recover them and I'll help her with the steps. She was so paranoid about losing the rest of the project if something were to go wrong while recovering.
Bookmarks got recovered. She's happy.( I just took the bookmarks.bak file from the chrome folder and converted it to an html doc.)
4 days later-
Her: dude, what the fuck did you do. The whole system has been reset. The whole project is gone. Fucking know-it-all. She thinks I'm responsible for the system restore.

Bit of a bitch to get set up, but I made a SASS auto-recompiler with file watching. Windows was being a total ASS and sends the change event up to 4 times in my testing for a single file save action. It also renders the file unwritable for that time, throwing errors.
I literally had to add debouncing to make this work, but it's kinda nice now.6 -
Blisk, a browser with multiple device testing for developers, went from free to subscription model.. Time blocking features that they offered before, for free.

I tried to change permissions on files but then it broke the git-bash implementation 😭.
Fuck it !! 😭😭9 -
My new co-worker is extremely stressing. I have to give small tasks so he won't forget to do anything. I also have to explain what he has to do in detail, give him the full solution, and show him exactly how he has to do it.
And he has no idea how to use git. He makes a feature branch and pushes all his various, half-finished features into it and makes a pull request.
And then I still have to refactor his crappy code everytime cause he uses variables like $data, $accA, $accB, $accZ and forgets to use the definied color variables in sass.
I literally have to do my work and his as well -_-6 -

The amount of sass I give people from other departments at work that think that they can just walk all over my guys is something to write books about.
Someone already tried pulling some shit with me and the hod, so what did I do? I fuckd her app up and moved her dumbass down to the bottom of the queue, now she gets to do manual paperwork for here till I get tired of it. Again, that is what your dumbass gets for harrasing my guys ...1 -

What To Learn?
I'm a beginner in web development and have knowledge about html, css, JavaScript, jQuery, Sass, NodeJS, Express, MongoDB, Passport. You can consider me to be a beginner full stack developer, but I'm confused about what to learn further. There are so many front end frameworks that one can spend his entire life learning them. React, Vue, Angular, Backbone, etc. But I always want to learn backend properly, then there's Rails, PHP, SQL, Python. Can anyone atleast tell me what to learn and why exactly? This thing's making me mad and anxious.24 -
Shows client site in progress on demo server. I tell them not all of the responsive styles on a chunk of the pages are done yet.
Client: Everything looks wrong. If it's not working it should say 'coming soon'
Me: This is a demo server, it will be finished before the production server for sure
Client: Put coming soon up please1 -
- get better at nodejs(and a bad ass front-end dev)
- rewrite the sass to bem for my club website
- put the website for my brother and sister online
- build a new 2018 portfolio website for myself
- finish my dashboard to run on a pi
- get a permanent position1 -
I hate Sass.
When installing all NPM dependencies with npm i, it's always quick, but not with sass. Ooooh myy goood. It starts compiling. It always misses something. Your node version is always not what sass needs. It pulls out gyp which requires some native shit. The build is never reproducible, it always fails with some horrible two mile long poorly-formatted stacktrace that is just gibberish.
More than that, sass is just poorly designed tool used by frontend fuckboys to write imperative, nonstandard, non-maintainable styles. If you know shit about css, you don't need sass.
I'm so happy it's going to die along with gulp. Webpack and css modules are here.
Yes, css-in-js that has a runtime penalty is also shit. If you like its syntax but dislike everything else, use Linaria. It has no runtime penalty and looks just like other css-in-js solutions.14 -
Yesterday I had another job interview. This time from home via Skype. Today I was blown off. I was not technical enough according to the company.
This company was working with an ancient cms nobody ever heard of and made Sass sound difficult and new.
Good luck in the Stone Age fellow devs. Make sure you upgrade your pc to Windows 7.5 -
Pirated MS office was so much better than the paid one. I never once had a banner pop-up and tell me that i didn't have a license 😖
Now, that i do have the license, the banner has made it a habit to pop-up whenever i work on something important 🤦6 -

MoFo normal beings. Don't know what it takes to write good code.
Lots of coffee
Lots of pizza
Lots of knowledge
And ability to say no to every stranger or friend who has an app idea and is willing to pay in shares 😤😤5 -
Note to self: if you have a tight deadline and need to rush a website / web app, use SASS because you're going to end up with 800+ lines of CSS because you suck at your job and you keep telling yourself you'll refactor everything but never get around it.
-
You can compile sass straight to c on a Mac instead of going to ruby first... I've wasted so much time. 11 seconds to compile --> .4 now 😑3
-
Why, for the love of all that is good, does anyone still code for absolute placements in css?!
I've spent 90%+ of my time lately making some changes, which is about 20x harder than it needed to be because this app (written in the last 1-3 years) has all of the styling set explicitly. How does anyone justify that?8 -
So... My boss is "hard working", meaning that she'd rather edit and upload a html file every morning at 5am for the last 5 years and manually send a push notification notifying the user that the new file is up than learning a little bit about automation (cron? IFTTT?) and even after letting her know about those options she has "no time"
She'd rather keep source code (pug, sass), manually build on local computer and upload to live servers instead of learning git and letting me setup once and for all CI/CD
SERIOUSLY!?!? NO TIME!?!? But there's time to do things at a turtle pace like in the 90s... 🤦♂️5 -

Who said CSS/Sass is not worth commenting? I'm fed up with those devs not commenting a single thing in their code. CSS/Sass might seem simple but there's many cases where a single line of comments would save you 10mins, or more... FFS!4

Front end web development :

Im trying to fix a sass build in my current project and it’s just hell. I got 65k lines of output and 2 errors. Where those errors are coming from is impossible to find out since the terminal only displays 10k lines. Aaargh i’ve tried everything!14

So, i use this bulk messaging service and they decided to make logins OTP only ("for security reasons", they say), sent to your email.
So instead of entering a password quickly,
- enter the password for your email account,
- click about 10 times on Resend OTP
- wait for OTP
- copy OTP and paste in the box.
So basically relying on the person's email provider's security than deploying their own. -
Currently working on two site builds in two different CMSes, one using Bootstrap 3 (LESS) and the other Bootstrap 4 (SASS). Great way to confuse yourself 😂1

Have I told you that I love Sass? Yes? Well, that's fucking true! Like today I decided to host the used font myself and just include all font-awesome SCSS into my main.sass and saved one <link>. That boosted loading time and user don't have to see those ugly squares while page is loading. I'm truly in love.7
-
I love CSS, but don't like preprocessors (like SASS, Less, or Stylus) :/ There's nothing more beautiful than vanilla CSS with zero workflow :)10

Someone around here once said that they believe that Rust compiler errors are generated by first sending the compiler noise to some dude in India and then they parse the errors and send them back to the compiler.
This was not a nod against our friends from the land of India, but instead, I think, a praise.
Thus I would like to add a request to the rust devs to see if they could include more "trademark Indian" sassy remarks in the messages that the compiler generates. But I am afraid that they think I am being racist or something.
For reference: My Indian friends are all beyond sassy in the way they clap back at mfkers when having friendly arguments, I have been left with a "well, damn" in multiple occasions because I am incapable of reaching that level of sass myself.12 -
I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.

I just recently started working on a product that uses MaterialUI.
I’m not saying it is bad, but it is frustrating me. As a person with a very strong understanding of CSS (SASS mostly), it is frustrating to see the framework try to make things easier while making them entirely more hard.
It would take one or two classes do a thing in SASS but instead it is accessing a bunch of sub classes already built in and modifying some aspects. And then having to add custom css-in-js for other layout needs.
It feels wrong for 1 element to have 2 different methods and areas to house it’s own styles.
I’m sure I’m going to get used to it soon enough. But it is frustrating now. -
Building a new machine for NodeJS. Installing Gulp-sass has a dependency on node-sass - which has a dependency on node-gyp - which has a dependency ON PYTHON!!!

Spent like 5 hours today installing, configuring, and playing with phpstorm. first time I've used a real ide type program and wow, I replaced 5 programs with this I would use at the same time.

Spend an hour talking to junior dev about not nesting multiple #ID selectors in sass. He is still convinced it's better for 'rendering performance' and refuses to change it. Should I ask him to add 200 elements with the same style on one page to illustrate the problem?4

When I met her she was just plain html, I took my time and styled her with love, I never loved intruders so I kicked bootstrapCss outta the way,
made my custom queries, and with some vanilla JS she looked like the DOM of my dreams, but now our relationship has grown through the users(years) and things are becoming more object oriented and it feels like I'm no longer in control, first it started with jQuery and some Sass and maybe I thought we could get along, but then came React and his Routers and though they said they'll be partners, 😅😅

At first I was like "meh.. SASS is not really that different from css really.. maybe this wont even help any.."
But now I'm like "dude holy shit please never let me work without SASS/SCSS again!" :D -

How competent I feel today experiencing the WebDev world?
I've nearly gone insane editing my CSS code, not noticing any changes at all on my website whilst spamming F5.
Luckily, before I was beginning to plan my suicide, I realized that I was editing SCSS the entire time, having my auto-compiler turned off.5 -
More tales from University Tech Support:
Haven't been able to get ahold of this staff member for weeks to do required maintenance. Emails, VMs, surprise office visits, she's never anywhere to be found.

Yeah, she responded in minutes...2 -
I feel like I know what I shouldn't know. I know a little about using jQ and JS (mainly little plugins) but I can't code js from scratch.
I use vanilla html and css and my environment is notepad++.
I feel like I should know SASS, Pug and use Webstorms or some other professional IDE. And learn js.
Which preprocessors do you prefer? Which IDEs and which point to start learning js from scratch?8 -
I just hate it when people dont know tools of their profession!
You are a dev..... Learn git goddamnit!
You are a frontend dev.... Know SASS and various other tools that will make your and people around you's life easier.
You are a backend dev.... Know how to use linux and know which tool to use to make the app faster.....
Or else dont talk to me and leave me alone.5 -
Does anyone else fall into the 'TODO' trap? I just finished my website (using jekyll) and I've got a stable build that I like and I should probably start writing content for it but at the same time, it would be cool to set up a better color scheme and refactoring the css into sass. Anyone else get caught in the trap?3

MaterialUI? Is it shit?
A brand new code base. Old codebase (old employees) used MaterialUI, locking in a lot of the styling and layout in their grids.
I'm trying to identify the pros/cons that can come from experience using the framework.
Some questions to spark discussion:
Anyone used this in production for a period of time?
Did it hold up? Did the designers hate it?
How was mixing this with SASS etc.
Cheers8 -
The web dev front-end world is insane!!
webpack, babel, node, npm, sass, css, postcss, javascript, cypress etc etc.

First job as a web dev (promoted within my company from helpdesk!!!!). I made it explicitly clear that my php experience is rudimentary and that I was still learning and our CIO was fine with that, just said I need to fast track learning.
In my first website support meeting today they dropped all kinds of fun stuff about Wordpress development that I only know the basics on and is now my responsibility to learn, so:
How the hell do I learn php/scss/sass/docker for Wordpress really fucking fast? Lol4 -
He was my senior and we were the only developers in our startup company. He doesn't liked flex or sass, so he never allowed me to use them which could make my life easier.

So today i learn`t SASS and im impressed but here`s the damn question , What do ya recommend SASS or LESS10

Sass.
I'm using the @use directive to avoid bundling the same thing a hundred thousand times.
Sass doesn't give a flying fuck and bundles the same thing a hundred thousand times

That's gotta hurt dawg: Emotion(a CSS-in-JS library)'s 2nd most active maintainer ditches own solution for SASS + CSS modules: https://dev.to/srmagura/...

Please tell me the next big thing will be going back to basics & not go to even more insane lenghts for marginal DX improvements.2 -
Most the devs are yelling Linux is best and blah. But since I installed eOS on my new ideapad my productivity is zero.
I'm just solving problems with the OS or other software. It seems some of the drivers are missing, because sometimes this fucking piece of shit just don't boots or just hangs. Installing node and npm was definitely one of the worst experiences because I messed up sudo privileges... I had to change my workflow because node-sass wasn't able to compile because of this.
And still I kind of feel more comfortable with eOS. 😥17 -

Dear Web developers,
I'm looking to boost my skills and improve work flow. I was wondering what sort of tools, editors or platforms would you recommend? I currently use wordpress, php, jquery, sass, react, node and laravel.
I've heard about awesome ways where you can monitor project changes, something like github but with gui for design drafts and stuff.
Also I heard about good online platform for Web development, something like online sublime text where all your files are saved within cloud platform. I'm looking for something that will unify my work throughout different work places.
Lastly, are there any good sites or new technologies that are fairly popular and good to learn or research?12 -

Are there any norwegian devs out there that are looking for a new colleague (webdev)? :D
I'm going to be out of work in a few months time, and have started applying for jobs in the Oslo area, but most jobs I see listed require 3+ years of experience. I've worked with web for about 9 months and I'm keen to get more experience. Interested in a full time job or being a trainee.

Couple of weeks ago I received a negative response about a code test I did for a front and position. They only said I was not a good fit.
Today, I received another email from them, asking me to do a test. I asked for clarification, and they said they are giving me a chance to redo the test.
Sounds weird, but I'll redo the test anyway. The task is to code a responsive page that consume an api. I'm using vue, sass, git, modular and semantic code. What else should I focus?

Really hate working on front end sites where the designer has no idea how to use Twitter Bootstrap.
Instead of using SASS to customise the framework they have included the entire library and their owned CSS file titled "custom.css".
"custom.css" has 768 lines on plain css (not SASS) that simply overrides Twitter Bootstrap CSS.
Seriously :(1 -
I wonder why the css class inside the css file throws an angular compiler error at '{' ... shit, it was configured with sass, not scss 🤦

Just fucking hate how expensive and hard to find a cheap SMS gateway
And as in cheap, I mean cheap as send email
I found Cheap Global SMS and it doesn't have a professional website nor a good API but it is way more cheap
Downside? I must pay with a payment gateway made by the same company (coincidence?)
And NO WAY I'm sending my id to a payment gateway that no one uses
I'll try sending some random image to see if they accept it
But, still, no confidence to put my credit card in there2 -

currently I'm kinda lost in web dev, particularly WordPress themes. As I'm knew to this stuff, I feel I'm going to the wrong direction.
I don't know how to properly make a website, until know I've been doing it all by hand, but as I stated theming, I started using sass, auto prefixes, minify (js|css) and I'm wrapping all this with GNU make.
I'm certain this seems wrong, but what should I do??5 -
Rushing to get a feature completed for a client presentation tomorrow has turned my Sass sheets into a nightmarish hellhole of classes, nesting, and questionable specificity. This is taking a huge liberty with "if it works, ship it."

1000 lines of css is still smaller then most images optimized for modern displays (aka everything that isn't a thumbnail). Either our designers don't come up with stuff complex enough to validate adding a compilation step to interpreted code or I'm missing something,
I've been looking into CSS preprocessors. Can anyone give me an example of why you'd use one that isn't some lame programming platitude like "pushing technology forward"? Like an actual design element that can't be done in straight up CSS?
As someone who compiled AS3 for the web back in the day the "new wave" of internet technology (with all it's compilation steps) seems super dodgy.4 -
Not following the front end "standards" of the company I work for ( Sass variables, Methods, CSS frameworks, mixins, etc.) even though we had a meeting talking about following standards to improve the workflow a day before.2

Recently came across Visual Studio Code. Seems amazing, and very close to jetbrains.

Don't recommend Sublime or Atom. Just don't. Or vim.
PS: should be free or close to free.3 -

Nested CSS declarations without using SASS or similar.

So what do you guys use now? Is Node SASS the way?3 -
I started learning to programming when my dad introduced me to it, I then just started teaching myself and learning via trial and error. Started in C#, went to web (learnt HTML, CSS, JS) then started on SASS and CoffeeScript, after that went to C and C++, then started looking at Angular, and now I'm on Ruby.
And every project from these languages has at least 10 errors -.-3 -

Guys, please be mindful of your dependencies. I just ran "npm install" and whole hell broke loose.
Imagine having to install 3.6GB of VS2017 C++ junk, just to make the damn node-sass compile.
Obviously the module needs to build on my machine, but one would expect that a nodejs module would not depend on msbuild. Funny how nature does that... -
The project structure is simple. To work with it you need to first build this undocumented ruby-based, severely outdated backed that requires an env file that nobody really knows where it is. Don't worry, setting it up should take no more than half a day. Then just run `docker-compose up`, after that `rails s`. Now in another repo you need to run a python server and a node sass. You need to figure out the name of the compiled file though. Perfect structure!2
-
Laravel use SASS,
SASS installed through NPM & compiled with Node-gyp,
Node-gyp need build tools each platform,
Build tools for Windows is Visual Studio.
So, I need to install Visual Studio to compile SASS?

I'm in middle of fucking moronic, most incomprehensible situation.
So primarily I work for a project which requires Node 6.11.5 precisely and now I've been assigned another developer's half asses'd work without any documentation about how to set up gulp, long story it took me a week to figure out it's an ant build with node dependencies oh and I nearly forgot this developer is using node 0.12.1, Can you fucking believe that?
Now when I'll need to compile/build for primary project i'll need to reinstall 6.11.5 and god knows what will happen when and if that half asses'd project comes back
This idiot has style.css / style.ie.css / style.min.css in .gitignore so every time I pull I'll need to re-build oh and the worst part I spend my weekend fixing this shit then sass compiled and shit is still crazy, CSS is written from SASS but not reflecting on server ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
While I'm writing this I'm waiting on my boss who is also trying to fix this. -
i feel like a fucking failure, I am so tired of programming, i dont even like it anymore, and all my coworkers are programmer gods. I feel like a burden. Part of it might be imposter syndrome but for the most part its true.10

I love how after updating my ubuntu I need to upgrade node-sass in every single project I need to work on.4

My project manager won't allow me to add webpack as a dependency but is okay with using SASS. Does this make sense?

Need some help!
How can I create a git release with only distribution files?
Let's say I have a Sass project and it compiles to a single CSS file. I want to provide just the CSS file in download as release and exclude all other source files. How can I do that and how should this be automated?
Thanks5 -
So I decided to learn sass today... Turns out you need to run that good old watch command every session to make your styling work...
It only took me 42 lifetimes to discover that one...1 -
I hadn't browsed devrant for about 24 hours and i kept feeling that I was missing something. The moment I read a few posts, it felt like I was complete again 😅. Am I sick?

Maybe it's hard to get CSS calc() right,
but to make it really complicated,
let SASS do its erratic magic on it2 -
How different should two different technologies be to consider putting both on your resume?
Like is it okay to put both CSS and Sass (https://sass-lang.com/dart-sass) or are they too similar to reasonably do so, what about javascript and 'Google App Script'
How do you determine if it's worth being on your resume orif you should only have the more known one on the resume unless the job requirements advertise the other?
And at what point do you 'know' enough to put it on your resume if i should? At what point can I say I 'know' sass or google script enough to advertise myself with it?1 -
I don’t know if they really don’t want Sass or if they’re just scared to try it.
Not all new techs are horrible.
Hope one day they will realize that using CSS preprocessors is way better. And it’s not that as complicated as it sounds. Jesus Christ.
@ pro-CSS frontends, any thoughts?5 -
Typescript , Covfefesript, Sass and all the other javascript, CSS mongrels suck. Let them die out please. No offense.7

Just wondering any of you has seen automated tests in a CI machine? Theyre not reliable enough to be running all the time because many times its just an empty error amd its tedious to investigate and wastes lots of time2

So i want to get into css preprocessors. Which one is a safe bet ? I thought less would be cool, but sass and scss seems to be becoming the industry standard ...4

Hi, in my latest project I'm stuck on the CSS part.
I've already an Grunt + Sass Asset Generator for bootstrap.
The project has several (> 70) subpages aka modules.
The theming is client based, currently 4 clients with different colors.
At first I thought it was easy...
Splitting bootstrap to variables per client + bootstrap, so:
client1_variables.scss
client1_bootstrap.scss (including client1_variables).
client2_variables.scss
client2_bootstrap.scss
. . .
But now I'm stuck.
Reaason: The css classes are the same between the clients, eg client-bg-primary is the class.
I wanted to prevent generating for each client a folder - as every folder would contain the same content:
module/news/client1.scss
module/news/client2.scss
module/news/client3.scss
module/dashboard/client1.scss
module/dashboard/client2.scss
module/dashboard/client3.scss
...
Each SCSS file would only differ in the variable import...
Is there a way to prevent a Global Module CSS file for each client (as there are @##* fucking classes duplicated and I really don't want to untangle that mess) but not ending up with writing the same Code over and over?
The IRC sass channel is moderated, not possible to ask there... And when I google I find mostly themes based on an class approach (border-light vs border-dark)… :(2 -
Why hasn't anyone made a mobile SASS app yet? Sometimes you need to code on the go, and you just can't drag around a laptop.
Or is there an app and I just can't find it?6 -
So, got my first ssd. It's so freaking light 😳. I hope it's not just the outer casing without the internal PCB 🤪.
No, i wasn't living without an ssd. It's just to revive my 5 year old laptop 😅 -
The fact that 2 devs complain about node-sass sequentially on my feed says a lot about node-sass.
Thank God for --insert-something-enjoyable- in the comments please.1 -

I'm just a beginner with CSS, nodejs, sass and whatsoever. Also I really enjoy writing my docs with Markdown, so I decided to make an effort and create a project that aims to create an easy-to-use and easy-to-apply Markdown themes, that can be customized.
I know that this may be horrible code, but If someone can point me in a good direction, I'd be glad to learn and apply it.

So, I was googling for cross platform javascript things.. every answer, there's only weex and nativescript, but both aren't ready for prod, so I tried weex, it's alright but the documentation is non existant, and the support is practically on dial up, and hardly anyone has used it. And nativescript isn't really an option cause it's only for mobile.
So I chose weex, web + mobile, and I can easily port my already written vue project, sweet, so I get to porting, run into a few issues but it's pretty easy, need to play with some of the root file path definitions, no "./"'s just "@/" (if you use @ as your root symbol).
great. Pug works, sass... seems to work, then I run into a pretty big issue with sass compilation/loading, can't find an answer for an hour.
So I go out. Then come home, no answer on my SO question.
So I google "jsfiddle weex" to get a jsfiddle template for debugging weex/vue projects.
A few results down. I see this: https://reddit.com/r/javascript/...
well I've heard of framework7, but it would require me rewriting most of my element tags and components, but what's quasar?
I have a look, totally cross platform, desktop, web, mobile... wtf..
read the docs, "uses vue single file components"
..what, holy fuck, the documentation is beautiful, it uses vuex, fucking fuck.
I just found it 10 minutes ago....
wish me luck......... -
