Don't get too comfortable.
If your workplace isn't much of a learning environment, it's either time to learn on your own time or leave that workplace.
Don't be arrogant with those who are less tech savy. If your boss/cowoker doesn't understand, at least give them them a chance ☺.
Be kind to new developers who make mistakes; you were in their shoes once.
Realize there's more to life than just designing and implementing software. Don't let other areas of your life suffer just because you're a godly developer.3 -

*Lazy Friend has IntelliJ and Eclipse*
*Lazy Friend using Notepad++*
Me: Why don't you use IntelliJ? Its debugger really helps..
LF: It takes too much time to start, I don't have that much time..
*continues staring at his screen and using his mind debugger*
It's kinda funny when he just sits and stares at his screen after saying that he doesn't have any time..
It took way less time to find the (a?) bug when he finally used the debugger..7 -
Overheard some family members talking about me during a vacation about 3 years ago...
aunt: why is he that way?
cousin: he spent too much time on the computer while he was younger.
aunt: that's bad.
yeah.. now I make more than both of you and don't give a shit about you anymore, thanks 👍6 -
Every time my mac mini compiles and gives off too much warm air my workmate splits always our table with a cardboard. So i decide to decorate it a little bit...6

My boss asked me to do estimates for some tasks.
I did it.
He told me that was too much time.
I told him that those were the estimates taking into account the experience of the team.
He told me the estimates were independent of that.
I asked if an estimate, for the same tasks, for a team of interns should be the same as for a team of seniors.
"Of course they are the same!"
Funny thing is that he even says he supports scrum...9 -
CAN SOMEBODY STOP THE TIME FOR A WHILE!!!
I HAVE TOO MUCH TO DO AND TOO LITTLE TIME!!!
FML!
PS. WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING IN DEVRANT?4 -
I got fired.
Worst job I ever had, they extended my probation period, called me "over maintenance", said my work was good but not good enough for the effort, If I take a lot of care doing my work then it's "over preparation", if not good enough then it's "not detailed enough", I don't ask enough questions? I must be unmotivated, I ask too many? I take up too much of other people's time.
Fuck them all. I hope they get a taste of their own medicine.10 -
I don't know why everyone seems to think Chrome uses too much memory... My work machine has 32 GB of RAM and it runs fine with Chrome only consuming half of that. I'm thinking of upgrading to 128 GB and then I'll be able to run Chrome AND Atom at the same time!4
-
Citizens are advised not to use encryption as decrypting data takes too much time and is costly.
Please spread awareness and save money.
Thank you for Cooperating, have a nice day :)6 -
So we where given a project with a deadline already set behind our backs and we have to give our deadline despite not knowing wtf we have to do exactly ...
They asked us to don't ask too much time because the budget can't afford too much time...
I'm here thinking: WTF?!
THEY PASSED A FUCKING DEADLINE AND PRICES TO THE FUCKING CLIENT WITHOUT ASKING ANY! ANY MOTHERFUCKING DEV ABOUT IT!!!
We asked them so many fucking questions on the first meeting that they were fucking baffled about everything but kept playing cool like "well, this project is already set and we are gonna have to deal with it"
Bunch of motherfucking stupid cock suckers , go die agonizing on your own vomit and if ask my help I'm gonna answer "well, you gonna have to deal with it because you are already fucked"2 -
I've been working for years on a game that would be a mix between Dwarf Fortress, Factorio and SpaceChem.
Problem is, I keep switching between engines and languages, never making too much progress. I've written several isometric rendering libraries, tried out going fully 2D ASCII or fully 3D in unity... And then something else eats up my time for a while again.14 -
manager (not technical) : we need to add blocking feature to our social media.
me : adding block feature will take 2 weeks developing.
manager (not technical) : why it takes too much time to develop you can just delete the user from the database if a user blocked him.
me : hahahaha ... just ... delete ...
manager (not technical): ...
me : hahahhahahhaha.....

"Don't worry about the little things."
- Programmer, never.
Spent way too much time debugging and the issue was a missing exclamation mark - once again.
It's always the little things!6 -
Me: I have been doing really similar tasks I'm going to spend some time making a template for it.
Supervisor: ok just don't spend to much time on it we have a lot to do.
Me: shouldn't take too long
1 hour later.
Supervisor : how's the work going.
Me: almost done with the template.
Supervisor: this is taking you way to long I need you to just get back to work.
Me: ok
He leaves and I continue work on the template.
30 mins later.
Show him the template.
Me: I cut my time on this specific task by 80%
Supervisor: good job glad I knew you should do it.
WTF YOU WERE TELLING ME NOT TO.5 -
Working on a funny/new api/service (will be a public one) and I'm only now realizing how important good security is but especially:
The amount of time that goes into securing an api/application is too goddamn high, I'm spending about 90 percent of my time on writing security checks 😅
Very much fun but the damn.31 -
My biggest personal challenges as a dev are these two:
1. I tend to work too much (by choice), which impacts my personal spare time heavily.
2. I tend to not let loose of a problem until it is solved. This often results in longer work hours or me not taking brakes...4 -
4 months into my marriage, the "you spend too much time programming" argument finally happened. I guess I could start going to bed before 3am...9
-
*job ad* We strongly adhere to TDD
Reality:
Me: yeah but shouldn't we write tests first and then get X finished?
Manager: No takes too much time, we finish X and then we decide if it's worth testing.5 -
*Programers can't spell*
In a previous job, I once spelled inquiries as enquiries. It was a service and it was used in many places throughout the app. Somehow, it made it through peer review and even my teammates started using the misspelled word.
I didn't realize my mistake till months later and by that time I thought it was too much work to fix it (or I was too lazy).
I'm pretty sure we even misspelled it for the on-screen texts.
Moral of the Story: know how to spell shit9 -
Bad dev habit to unlearn:
Impostor syndrome before starting a project.
Don't think a lot before diving into a tough project. Just jump in. If you second guess yourself about being ready, you'll never do it. Either you're already good enough or you'll figure out what you need.
I wasted way too much time before starting to write an AI chess engine but it turned out a lot simpler than I expected.2 -
Last night I realized I may be spending too much time programming. Got together with some non-programmer friends, and once I got drunk, all my conversations were formatted in my head as api requests in Json 😅😅2
-
Welp, time to ditch devRant
I don't mind green dots posting the same things over and over (and let's be honest, everyone had some of those complaints when we started coding), but what's been happening lately with spam and bots is just too much.
Thanks for the ride @dfox, it's been good while it lasted. Too bad I never got a dev duck tho, they were always out of stock :(18 -
Bad dev practices:
1. Forgetting to version control some fun project i am doing for a long time and then commit everything at once. And forget about it again..
2. I probably have too much love for abstraction. So i abstract stuff just for the fuck of it to the point my friends dont even understand what the program is for.
3. I have no patience and due to that i lose motivation when i think of some idea that is big.
4. I cant keep my ideas small enough, and i dream too big until problem3 kicks in, and then i drop the entire idea.6 -
People say programmers are no fun!! But they don't know the truth.
We have big Ass container of emotions almost ready to explode anytime. We are spending too much time in debugging stuff one after another that having a free time is just a hoax to us, even when we came back home for sleep, it's only to dream about solution. We would be happy with debugging the error that is not letting us sleep for weeks.4 -
You are lonely because ->
You don't have a partner because ->
You are a nocturnal person because ->
Night might be the best time for development because ->
You are too much obsessed with programming because ->
You are lonely because ->
...8 -
I'm seeing a pattern here... We devs/testers/sysadmins/etc. don't get to spend too much time outside... We talk about different stuff than most people... We are more intelligent than most people so we don't get their dumb jokes... Most of us like to work at night because that's the time when nobody bothers us...
We don't get a chance to find a girlfriend, we don't understand how it works...
We are doomed13 -
am I only one who thinks that ≥6GB RAM for phones is just too much as most of the time the unused RAM gets wasted for no goddamn reason but the only one being that the companies want their product(s) to look more compelling in `spec sheets` and it's a competitive market so it ok for them to do so...24

My wife is complaining that am spending too much time on devRant. I just told her, am coming here only when windows is updating :p ;)1

Team leader: hey why this bug is taking too much time? You could fix it hours ago let me try to fix it. I really fuckin hate juniors ...
*Hours later*
Me: could you fix it ?
Team leader: ....
*Couple of years later*
Me: ah i see it's not an easy but could you find any solution bro?
Team leader: no it's not a straight forward bug. You are right am sorry i shouldn't prejudge5 -
The last 5 months have been tough.... My boss ( who was a close friend) quit and I become interim department head... Trying to run a team who didn't seem happy I'd taken the reigns.
At the same time my wife's ongoing battle with her anxiety had gotten worse and she really needed my help with everything possible at home..
In March I was confirmed as the HoD but I was still doing 3 to 4 days a week on client delivery, trying to support all presales activities, manage a team of 10 people, travel for work and support my family....😩
It really got to me and I was close to breaking... The worry of not replying to an email ASAP no matter what time of day would eat me up, working late every night... It got too much and I was running on fumes with my weekends just me completely wiped out and useless to the family. 😓
.....But.....
I had a escape last weekend to a 🍻 beer 🍻 festival with friends that I was considering not going too and just losing the money but the wife made me go...
And it broke me even more... So much that its somehow put the pieces back in the right order in my brain and snapped me out of my major rut!
Somehow, sitting with friends, making stupid jokes, drinking way too much and blocking out all the work crap gave my brain the hard reset it needed. 🤟
This week I've come back a different person ( wife's words) work is a breeze, exciting and encouraging.... 👊
I can't get enough of playing silly games with my kids all night
And couldn't feel any more positive about things if I tried.... Set that spark back for my wife too! 😏💏
So.... After that long rant 👀
Tl;Dr - work and life got too much... Close to giving up... Too much beer with good company gave me a hard reset and I feel like a new person.... 👍
Plus the team is now loving the new direction and strategy too 👔
Who says drinking is bad for you? 😂🍻11 -
PM says you are spending too much time testing. Fast forward to a production bug and they are standing behind you while you are frantically coding saying "this should have been tested more".7
-
my girlfriend told me to stop spending too much time in front of the computer, so I stopped dating *foreveralone*1
-
oh man... I just spent 12 hours in the zone and made what was originally meant to be made by 4 developers in close to two weeks(coding in free time)
Aaand I also drank too much coffee...
And I've done it in Node.js which I basically never used before :D ...I applied my coding standards and habits that I use when writing Java and it went like butter... ES2015 is pretty ok actually 😊1 -
Do you spend sometimes too much time on making the code look pretty that you forget to implement the f** feature?4

Depression update two.
Thanks for amazing support guys!
I have made decision to have a digital detox. Today I did have another bout of depression accompanied with a mild case of confused state of mind and suicidal thoughts. I have found the triggers(Social media and too much time spent on the internet.) I have lost a lot of weight too. From 68KG -> 46 KG in span of weeks. So I hope I will catch you soon after I recover from it.
Fuck depression. If anyone is having bouts of depression please contact your health-care provider or friends/family.
Love you all. ❤️🙏☺️10 -
Mom and dad never really cared me being a developer claiming they did not understand what I do and used to talk down on me becoming a loser for spending too much time making video games when I was a kid.
Got depressed for a long time and stopped making games.
Brother comes drunk at 15 years old, got yelled but bc he was out partying and socializing he never got called a loser by them. Now they laugh at that experience.
But never apologized until I got a breakdown. Fb becomes big and now they want me to invent the next Facebook and telling me to be happy.8 -
I wonder if I'm getting tired of making websites for people. I just "fired" two longtime clients today without really caring all that much. Not for no reason. They just were asking too much for too little. And I was getting bored of them. When I think about what I want to do in my spare time, the first thing I think about is creative writing. The last thing I think about is code and website design. It didn't used to be this way.3
-
I just got memo/warning for swearing too much.
Should i submit my resignation now?
Just to be clear, im not swearing AT someone. You guys know how it is when we're in the zone. Headphones on, focus intensifies, errors encountered, a lot of shits and fucks are uttered, most of the time shouted.4 -
Don't start teaching them in a language with a lot of overhead (Java). They spend too much time memorizing the class/method stuff before they even get there. Use python instead.10
-
I GOT MY FIRST CLIENT!! I'm not charging too much since it's my first client and I'm just focusing on the experience rather than pay. Were having a meeting Friday so he can tell me what he wants cause he didnt have all the info at the time. It's just a simple website and if he requests more when I present it I'll ask for more muns16
-
Regular expressions is like a condom, it's safe, combat tested and works most of the time.
But if you use it too much it gets dirty quickly.3 -
I wonder if flappy bird dev is in this community. Anyway, I want to ask you guys - What would have you done if you were in his situation?
I hear he removed the game after he saw people are wasting too much time on it.
People waste too much time on porn, Facebook, YouTube and what not. I don't understand his reasoning behind removing the game.
Anyway, what would have you done?25 -
Go to Denver with a friend for an Iron Maiden concert. I try edibles for the first time, which of course means take way too much. Hallucinate that lead singer is an arm flailing inflatable tube Man. I have a pretty good time. Walk back to the motel at midnight and have to launch a client's website from stage to production on the slow Motel Wi-Fi. I'm ready to pass out at this point, but I got my laptop, and I got my VPN running. So I spend the next 6 hours moving the site from one server to another while occasionally passing out for 20 to 30 minutes at a time.
One of the best road trips of my life. Five stars would do again.2 -
about:DevRant
Every time I write a comment or a rant, I edit it a bazillion times. I try to fix up spelling, grammar and wording.
Who else edits their rants and comments too much?7 -
So, you ask me for a quote. You know nothing about the technology or the problem, but you think the quote is too high.
On what fucking basis are you assessing the quote? On the number of words? Font? Whether your spouse/cat hates you (both do). Basically, whatever I said, you'd have said it was too high, right?
Fuckwit.
Next time *you* tell *me* how much you have to spend and I'll tell you what you can get for your budget.
Maybe a coffee and a small cake.
Don't fucking call me again.2 -
Everyday I fell my soul being sucked by this job.
We have too much liberty and it's all scattered, every fucking project uses a different framework.
Everything is a mess, no one seems to care and I'm feeling like shit for being the only one that seems to care.
Every time I start job hunting I fell depressed because of this nonsense bullshit they call job requirements.
Just wanna run away from this mess and never look back.13 -
Started off as an ok pitch. I was an advertgame developer at the time.
This company wanted a medieval styled platformer with a simple progression system that would integrate with their game store. Sounded like a fun project but when I created a planning and offer they immediately rejected it because they figured anything over 400 dollars was too much for a non AAA game...
Some people... lol2 -
my mind is multithreaded but can not physically execute more than one thread at a time.
i.e. i want to say 5 sentences in the same time bc im too lazy to wait and say them one by one after a specified delay of time, so i fuck myself over while speaking.
like atomic regions, i bust a few words from time to time from different sentences i have in mind and it ends up not making any sense to what im saying, but it does in my head.
so this is what too much covfefe and sleepless coding nights does to people12 -
Today,
My "big boss" call me because I take too much time to develop a website. She thinks all I need to do is drag n drop. Why the f*ck do you need to hire me if it's only drag n drop you "super smart ass licker"? Man, this old people need some update about technology.
Btw, the "drag n drop" idea came from Dreamweaver YouTube tutorial.2 -
Today I looked at some code from our CTO. He used plain SQL Statements with huge selects and no prepared statements.
I asked him:
1. why dont you build some helpers or even use some frameworks?
2. why are there no prepared statements?
His answer (to both questions)
We do not need that. That just uses too much ressources and time. It's more cleaner and simpler this way.
My Face: 😵1 -
okay, here goes:
my last job I got through sending a tweet to someone I knew from working on an open source project. I found the open source project through going to a conference. I found the conference through being an active user on a forum.
so basically, this is how I justify myself when I spend too much time on devRant. you never know, 1 day it might work out! -
My PC died 2 weeks ago. I've been stuck on mobile since and will be too broke for a new machine for an indefinite (though certainly not infinite) period.
It's hell. One can only read so many ebooks and meditate so much.
What's the longest you've ever been without your machine, unwillingly?
Worst part is I was just starting a pet project and now it's on hold!
Pic related, my feels as time drags on when I'm not at work.11 -
Me: I want to be a dev..
Mom: But you only sit in front of the computer to play games.
Me: That's not what I always do.
Mom: Then why are you sitting behind the computer all the time.
Me: To make software. Most of the time you clearly see me typing code.
Mom: No, I can't trust you, you play too much games. Study hard and get another job.
Me: *Middle finger behind a back.*5 -
We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -
C has too much undefined behaviour because the standards comittee was being lazy and slapped that on a lot of issues that ought to have been implementation defined instead.
The most ridiculous example for UB: An unmatched ' or " character is encountered on a logical source line during tokenization.
Like WTF, that should be a compile time error, and it's easy to detect.21 -
You spend months coding an app, you refactor and restructure multiple times, you apply all sorts of smart patterns and algorithms you learned over all those years, you go back to the books even, you spend money on a ton of assets, localization, marketing, you spend time contacting hundreds of people that could boost your app in the ocean of apps. And once your app hits the store, people complain that $0.99 is too much.6
-
I've spent too much time online... I'm in a zoom meeting, I missed what someone said, reached to my keyboard to rewind then realised it was live... 🙈13
-
Why do my colleagues insist on HOURLY messages like "any update on X?" or "did you fix Y yet?"
REST ASSURED, WHEN IT IS DONE AND READY TO BE DEMOED, I WILL MESSAGE YOU, AS I HAVE FOR ALL PAST FEATURES AND BUG FIXES.
sheesh talk about too much time on your hands...6 -
Wrinkles appear on their forehead(s) when I spend too much time on computer. Their voices become loud but then I say - "This is going to earn me my bread."
All good. Good life :) -
Gradle taking too much time to finish?
No problem I make it show me its status at the bottom of each website I visit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
Every time I start a new project, I spend too much time on unnecessary things like picking an IDE to use or a name for the project2
-
Hey there! -first rant-
I need your advice mighty ranters.. I'm an introverted gal studying Computer Science at uni, and i love this field. Wanna be a web or app developer..
I need your help about 2 things:
1. Literally ANY advice, or things you wish you knew, when you were a rookie
2. I'm currently living in solitude, because of hard times in the past and i find making friends much more difficult at uni than in high school. It even starts to affect my productivity in a bad way. I have a hard time trusting people.
So any advice about this? How do you cope with too much solitude? Is there maybe a group for girl programmers? I don't know..
All advice are welcomed! (and IT jokes too, to make my day :D )
Thanks a lot !
Ps.: You are great! Awesome community.20 -
Having to do database schema changes manually is HELL. Management seems to not be taking seriously enough the need to stop and implement migrations, my boss/lead dev suggested me to look up how to adopt/implement them in my own free time, instead of stopping all the feature implementing to do this VERY IMPORTANT, CRUCIAL CHANGE. Now I am the retard who takes too much time to do simple changes in the database.
Maybe I am retarded after all.7 -
Slapping idiots around.
This needs to be a trend.
---
Actual rant :
I'm sitting in this idiot haven completing my mandatory hours doing nothing. Earlier I would spend this time learning stuff but I'm too fed up to do anything. This place is driving me mad and just today I had to suffer through more madness that is blocking me from resolving a bug.(I don't have the license to run the product I'm supposed to be fixing)
The number of inept idiots is too damn high. I try not to be bothered but I can only try so much.4 -
I'm pretty new here, but I can't begin tell you how much I appreciate feeling like a part of a dev community for the first time. It's great having a place to share, vent, and occasionally let out a fuck-filled rant.
I guess most jobs are too formal for you to be verbal and brutally honest about your experiences and frustrations -- and friends can take the honesty but do not understand the technical stuff. This place seems to be the best of both words. Cheers.3 -
Is asking for a nice email client in Linux too much?
In thunderbird, I found no way to customize the "messages pane". Title, sender, time all in one line.
In KMail, the fonts and style of HTML signature is not working as expected.
In Evolution, the fonts scaling doesn't work correctly.
Fuck me!11 -
I don't get it why there are so many people out, that think testing stupid model classes with getters and setter is needed.
Dude. There is no logic in this class ... it's pure data that gets not modified there (well except if you call the setter)
I've wasted way too much time writting useless unit test because some ppl want to masturbate on 100% code coverage 🤦🏻♂️12 -
Germany is a nice place, but sometimes the bureaucracy is a bit much.
Especially when you try to write them a nice mail that you can't come to their "mandatory" appointment.
Because you're sick, like every damn time during the autumn holidays.
An email to an address where the hostname doesn't even exist. WTF?
Also don't you think that address is a bit too long? Chances for typos are pretty high when you do that, you know?5 -
> Tells client, if content isn't hosted on their server somewhere, we'll have to update the app every time they need new content
> Client refuses saying it will take too much time and effort to maintain
*Several weeks later*
> Get email from client asking to update the app because content is out of date
> I want to reply with 'Sorry no can do, it will take too much time and effort to maintain'8 -
Guy who thinks git is too much automation:
Files on master:
main.py
main_<other guy>_code.py
main_old_code.py
Also says: Don't push now because I am working on some files and git is not capable of dealing with changes to files within the same time.
WHY?!6 -
When u spend too much time writing Java and suddenly go back to C# yet continue to write Java code 😪4
-
have you ever felt having bad code ocd that you feel like you really need to clean this old project that you got assigned to fix, but cleaning the whole project up would take too much time and it is just not worth it . But you feel like you really need to do it...3
-
Gosh, where went my social life? XD
That's already more than a month that I moved to Nice. I'm working a bit too much I guess. You know, I'm the kind of guy who is gonna rebuild the entire software architecture on his free time because it's crap x)
Anyway Nice is quite relaxing I like this place. And if someone is around and see my face, come and say hi :P5 -
Funny how human brains are never satisfied.
Not much to be done at work today? My job is unproductive and I am wasting my time.
Too much work? You think you fucking own me, bitches!!1 -
Interviewed for a Q&A position.
Found bugs and errors on the test questions just fine.
Found broken assets and errors within the test itself outside of the questions. (Misspellings, typos, broken images, botched styling, etc.)
Didn't get hired because they thought I'd spend too much time finding bugs.
What gives?7 -
Meet today.... Fetlang
---
lick Bob's cock
lick Duke's left nipple one million times
while Ada is submissive to Duke
make slave scream Ada's name
Have Charlie spank himself
Have Ada lick his tight little ass
Have Bob lick Charlie's tight little ass, as well
make Ada moan Bob's name
make Bob moan Charlie's name

Never felt so dirty after calculating the fibonacci sequence...

"Fetlang is a statically typed, procedural, esoteric programming language and reference implementation. It is designed such that source code looks like poorly written fetish erotica."8 -
devRant is nice.
If you move rant feed to "Recent" and saw a bunch of rant u already read but you keep scrolling down hoping to see new rant but u fail cause rant policy keep people from posting new rant for 2 hour and not many new rant has been post.
This is a nice feature. It make u self aware that "crap, maybe too much time on devRant". Even if you addict to devRant but by this policy -> It force you to really close its app and checking it on another free time. (more healthy than another social media I guess 😂)2 -
- Learning a lot of new shit because I don't want to get stuck. Remember, if you're the smartest person in a room/group, you're in the wrong group.
- Create a server and a client for a variation of MultiCube with up to 10 clients, with communication being done via UDP. Yes, I spend way too much time on my cubes.5 -
Company wants me to give a rough estimate of developing a new feature in a distributed legacy monolit. They told me they would inform me the next day and want the estimate on the same day for a project that will probably take 2 devs 3-4 months. I ask for more time and info, give the estimate and they say it "feels too much". I mean ok. Then why am I even estimating? If in the first place the client has only X money than do the project for X and it doesn't really matter how much work it is, does it?4
-
It's 11 pm. I'm almost drunk and I have realized I have spent too much of my life learning. I have spent too much time working. I may only be 25 but I still am dedicating up to 100+ hours a week to my job and it needs to stop. It has only left me sad alone and drunk. I hope others on here try to have some social life because sitting here drunk and lonely sucks. Maybe I shouldn't be so picky. Who knows. Enjoy life when you can.10
-
Why ? Why is there no time left for the cool stuff? Spending too much time at work - beeing tired- bought a new rasp-pi - it's already 1 year old - untouched @ home ... just why?
had holidays ... spent 4 days of 7 to recover - just slept.2 -
* No raise after one year, even that I don't earn that much
* Working in the oldest project
* Everyday I have to make quick fixes, usually requested by leader
* No spare time to rewrite shitty code - always something have higher priority (like doing some tasks that I shouldn't do, just because I had no tasks for next sprint)
* Got feedback from leader that I "hack" too much instead of writing code properly (see third dot)
* Every company around pays more and have more up-to-date stack

You know you spend too much time in the terminal when this happens...
I was in contact with technical support by web chat. To finish the chat, he asked me to click the EXIT button.
It was in caps so I typed in
EXIT thinking it was a REPL. -
Spend way too much time crafting email responses, littered with subtle sarcasm and hints at their total incompetence with a gentle push in to what they should be focusing on, instead of sending ridiculous half baked fucking foolish requests.1

I have an interview with a CEO and product owner next week for the position of principal developer. The job ad which got me here stated 'Any additional skills you have will be viewed favorably'.
I've had my ass burned by that crap at least once before. When they ask about private projects, I'm just going to say "I love my job so much, I do it in my free time too!"3 -

I was reading a book and came across this :
"
What if you were a doctor and had a patient who demanded that you stop all the silly hand-washing in preparation for surgery because it was taking too much time? Clearly the patient is the boss; and yet the doctor should absolutely refuse to comply. Why? Because the doctor knows more than the patient about the risks of disease and infection. It would be unprofessional (never mind criminal) for the doctor to comply with the patient. So too it is unprofessional for programmers to bend to the will of managers who don’t understand the risks of making messes.
"
It's fair point but at the same time we have to comply with the manager in order to have a raise/promotion. What do you think guys ?6 -
The interface for time input in outlook Web on mobile is driving me crazy!! It's not as if there was a built in control that is well supported in all modern browsers.... Right
1. You can't tap on an hour to select it
2. You can only select by scrolling
3. The scrolling is "smooth scrolling". So you have N O fucking chance to select the time slot you wanted. After too much time has passed you just give up and accept that your meeting will be at 09:57
4. In order to go up in time you constantly activate the"pull to refresh" feature of Chrome.
I'm definitely no mindless MS hater but this I cannot tolerate.6 -
That strange feeling which equal parts depressing and exciting when you've got to update your devrant avatar because you got a haircut.

Not sure why Firefox is taking too much resources. It's just one tab with gmail login page. And only one add-on is active (AdBlock Plus). Guess it's time to switch to chrome.21

My company has been looking for a project time tracking and reporting app/website for 2 years but are too cheap to buy one. How many times will you say hi to me when we're passing on the stairs for nth time? How many 👋 will you send me in one day at almost regular intervals? I'm not a fucking rest api. You don't have to generate a fucking oauth token every time you pass me some information. I have a fucking state and it's getting distracted by too much human interaction3

My boss gave me a lab pc (not controlled by the internal IT) so I can put whatever OS I want on there. I'm planning to also write certain documents with something like LaTeX on it.
When he gave it to me, he said “but don't goo too overboard with it, I know much time you can sink into Linux and TeX”
Me, actually planning to go fully overboard in every aspect: “haha yeah don't worry I'll just install Ubuntu or something”8 -
Finally have some time again to make my bot that notifies me of interesting jobs and filters out things like "wordpress", into a dashboard that lists all jobs, automatically removes ones that are gone or have too much bids and much more, so excited 😄4

Slightly irritated by my IDEs warning, I squinted back at my code. It took me a second too long to spot my mistake. First, I was baffeld at my own incompetence. Then I grew defensive about it. "Why not?!" I thought. "Less typing, so efficient, so much time saved, so wow!"
I realized at that moment, that it was probably best to call it a day and go to bed.
And so I did.3 -
How are there people liking my comments on super old rants?

It has given me a great understanding of how important perfection is. At school everyone said, "you spend too much time perfecting everything" or "spread your* effort, rather than spending lots of time on one thing and rushing another." But now, in programming, knowing where to put the time and effort is the most useful skill I could ever need.
Also, I can barely use the mouse correctly anymore, except when playing video games.
*Here, my Google Keyboard suggested: legs, wings, Marmite. 😕1 -

So yeah, apparently there is a drawback of covering your code with tests.
It becomes too scary to execute them because 1 of those 310 tests might fail. Seeing that not all the tests are green - that could be a nightmare.
Every time I run my tests I look away. There's just too much tension.. The more tests - the scarier6 -
well fuck me, just spent the whole weekend (about 33 hrs) not being able to solve a task from uni with a java program we had to write🙄😪
the problem was a given set of movies with a weekday, the begin time, the duration, the title, and a "score"
the movies take place in one week (random days, random amount of movies) and every movie can be shown multiple times
our task was to find a sequence of non-overlapping (all unique) movies with a score of at least a given number
all in text form
i tried dynamic programming but the more i tried, the more it got complicated, so i ended up using "earliest finishing time first"
my code is just 3 points under the goal and i don't know what to change anymore😒, also some friends did the exact same and succeeded somehow
copying (and obfuscating) won't work, as the codes will be compared by a very good "copy checker"
let's hope i'll still have a chance for an exam😐2 -

Long time, no rant. Why is facial hair so difficult to control? How do people even grow beards without looking like hobos all the time? Do I have to make some sort of sacrifice to a dark and malevolent entity?
Believe me, it's so much easier to keep on top of shaving body hair than taming face fur. Especially because your facial hair is, you know, on your *face* which means it's very visible. You can't hide it if you mess up. Unless you decide that wearing a balaclava is a good idea when going outside, like when going grocery shopping. Generally that isn't received too well though.17 -
Sometimes I wonder how large the gap between tech savvy n normal is.
All those stories about too much time on social media...

Had my junior test at work yesterday, and...oh boy. I don't think I've ever been so stressed in my life.
>inb4 "welcome to the real world kid"
Yeah yeah I know but god damn, this was too much. I heard from seniors that you get used to everyday stress, it comes with the job, but junior test ( aka "stress test") is the breaking point for most "new" arrivals.
The test itself tho is not even that hard. Dealing with so much stress and time pressure for the first time is what gets you. Not knowing what happens if you don't pass certainly doesn't help.
I broke down at one point and even after finishing, going home (got no sleep) and coming back today, that feeling of hopelessness is still there.
No real point to this rant, I just needed to vent6 -
Google Tag Manager is a complete abomination of UX. The whole concept is just ridiculous, it lacks at least 3 levels of automation. Non-tech people won't be able to use it and for tech people it's laughably inadequate while still being conceptually difficult. A perfect combination of a tool that does too much and too little at the same time.1

Finally, after 42 days of in development, I can proudly say my game reached Alpha stage. All core mechanics are in place. I hope I'll be able to say the same thing for Beta in next 6 weeks too!
To be honest, I could do it better, but I didn't had much time.11 -
I've made a fucking retro game and it takes too much time and effort to make this thing when I complete my game I showed this to my cousins and their first words was it is too boring anybody could make it could you make something like pubg or fortnite when I listen to these words they were fucking demotivating and made me drive crazy I don't know how do I explain them how much hard to make something like this.14

Me coding and researching to fix new things everyday and people come to me saying:
"You are working too much"
And I'm thinking: actually, its a never ending learning job, I dedicate so much because almost everyday I learn at least one thing.
But knowing that non-tech people have a hard time around it I just answer: yeah.3 -
!Rant.
When you begin to terminate sentences with semicolons; And it feels more natural than using a period. You know you've spent too much time coding;1 -
- Make it engaging, and avoid too much bullshit.
- Everyone should get to air their concerns, regardless of your position, everyone should have a say of the matters being discussed.
And for the love of god, compress it, don't make it unnecessary long. It's not fun to attend something that takes an hour of your working time, because time is precious and you lose time to fix shit.1 -
Who has too much time on their hands and wants a throwaway project? :)
Say there are some poll results. Like this one. Each item has xx.yy% of all the votes. The task would be to come up with an algorythm that would read in those results and make a few predictments on how many participants were in this poll :)
I don't need it, I just came up with it and thought it might be a fun project for someone. I know I'd go for it if I had free time on my hands :)
P.S. if you're up for it, sharing a solution code is more than welcome!20 -

I think I'm still under NDA.
But I wanted to share, that shit after 6 months figured out that the ONLY time I can breath is weekend.

Im thinking about leaving my employer because I keep getting way too much work on my plate, people get annoyed that its not done in time and tell me that i should tell them if im getting too much work.
So i tell them its to much and our deadlines are to tight, then i just get told "this is how we always work, we just gotta finish things faster and better"...
Another one is that our HR/office manager keeps bugging me about setting up SMART goals so i can prove my value to the company and that its my responsibility to do so if i want a pay raise (even if im already underpaid)...
Im sorry but if you wanna keep me, you gotta give me some damn incentive to stay...
Ive been putting up with it sofar because i like the office and the people and the majority of the work itself and i really dont wanna go looking for another job because im really bad at it... but wtf... im so done with all the "how does this work" questions too...
tl;dr: getting negative reviews because im bad at my own evaluation is gonna make me quit probably, while im being praised for all other work i do4 -
Couple years ago I was asked to add couple of simple features to a piece of code on clients server. I thought it was simple process until I got the code and noticed that the variables were named like int1, int2, int3... etc. Also same logic in the database.
Needless to say I spent too much time to figure out what those variables and db fields contained. Also the whole code was copy paste code from the web. -
Finally making it.
I'm now closing down my company due to way too high costs and way too much work to try to stand those costs.
Good things will happen, now it's time to simply pay for the debts I now have just because I tried to dream too big without having enough financial support to sustain those dreams.
Hopefully I'll pay my debts in less than a year.
I really wish to go back in time, do stuff differently or even just don't do anything at all.
What a fucking year, I didn't even feel covid, lockdowns and such as I was too busy working at home.
Completely destroyed various relations in order to try to keep things up, now I just can't stand this stuff anymore.1 -
People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.1

I've decided to take a look at flutter today and boy... I must say I hate writing layout for it.
Not cause of all those margin thing no.. It's just too verbose, awful.
I don't want to spend that much time writing the UI, I want to focus on the logic.
Even XML was better than that.
I think I'll wait for a layout editor before coming back to it.
But I have to admit that hot reload is really nice after spending so much time waiting for my builds on Android 😓7 -
Software engineering isn't a great side-career if your aspiration is to do other things.
It takes way too much of your time to let you do anything else.5 -
I once asked our graphics designer to send me a 1x1 transendent pixel as an image. She was just filling that role at the time, not being an actual graphics designer, and the request was rather unusual. It took us a couple of attempts to get what I wanted. I like to optimize memory for the apps, maybe a bit too much.7

"This semester I will take more time for my personal projects"
Week one, having to organize all the uni stuff
Week 2-4, too much homework, no time
Week 5-7, fucking midterms

Week 10, finally time to relax a bit. Probably not going to work on my project. Fuck my time planning, fuck the day for only having 24h.2 -

Fuck timesheet
It's bad enough someone fucking disturb you in the middle of great thoughts. What's worse, you're QUESTIONED where the fuck your time was spent. So you need to work out how much time you have been disturbed, and put in the fucking timesheet!
What a fucking joke! As if we have too much time for meaningful stuff.8 -
I too got my $1 unix sticker pack (thank you very much whoever posted this by the way) and thought posting a picture of them would be redundant
First thing when I brought them to work to show them or to my colleagues I stepped out of my car and they all fell to the soaking wet ground (it was pouring down at the time)
Luckily they're of very high quality and still intact 😊11 -
Anyone else feels forced into a position by your project leader to be responsible for another coworker's work?
I feel like it is a burden of an ship anchor. They expect me to explain when she does not do her job correctly or uses too much time on X task.3 -
Looks like using another language to develop a separate process on the system is too much of a mind blow to my boss.
The look on his face when I tried to suggest such thing made me realize it will not be worth the time explaining the benefits of using the right tool for the job.1 -

In my absolute lack of genius, I just lost way too much time finally realizing that in C# linq-to-objects removes duplicates when you use Union().
At one point I knew this, but I forgot about it because I never want duplicates, slowly forgetting what Union() was doing.
*This time* however, the duplicates are required and it all goes to crap without them.
Save me, Concat()!
You can run but you can't hide from noobery.

Have you ever declined a job offer?
I had an interview a couple weeks ago, got an offer, but I had to decline because the salary was too low.
It would have been my first full time job (after several internships).
I'm not completely sure if I made the right choice. The team was really small, and it felt like I would have had to handle too much other than the responsibilities of my role.
And I have another interview tomorrow. I hope it goes well.
Meanwhile, I'm working as a developer consultant for a client. I'm learning a lot doing that, so that's going well. :)8 -
After doing some self reflection today, I realized that I could finish college (I passed every exam), but the amount of time I spent for college (basically the whole day each day) is too much to handle for me.
Note to future me: If you blame yourself for why you didn't continue, it's because of the lack of time, freedom and calmness of your mind. Otherwise you would have went literally insane.
Trust me, your early version is in that phase right now, and I know it better than you do.9 -
Greatest language of all times is still C. It stood against the test of time. Any new language including Rust can hope to ba barely performant than C with too much overload.(I know most cpp abstractions if more efficient handwritten C equivalent but still).
Language is small, simple, elegant.17 -

part of my workflow i want to improve?
in general, take more time to get to know better the technologies and tools i'm working with.
e.g. learn all the fancy hacks and features of my IDE or of a certain language or framework.
i tend to be in the mode "i don't have time for that, it already works the way i use it". if i spend "too much" time on learning stuff, i feel bad, since i could also spend that time working on my ever growing list of tasks. but i think, that's not a good habit... -
when you spend way too much time trying to figure out why something isn't working and its because you didn't clear the cache
-
Why does it seem like every time I finally learn how to use a new piece of technology, it becomes obsolete and I have to start all over again? And don’t even get me started on the constant updates and upgrades. Just when I think I have everything figured out, BAM! New update, new features, new headaches. Can’t we just stick with one version for more than a month? Is that too much to ask? 😤4

Hey you were not here yesterday so we assigned you to do this job that requires this training and is really fun and good for your experience

They were fucking not. I used to get shouted at because I spend too much time infront of a computer. MacBook died, currently in the lab, have a TERRIBLE dual core T4200, 3GB ram temp laptop replacement with VISTA.

Guys I have so much work to do, and here I am procrastinating on devRant.
Anyone else here wasting there time? :D
(not really... DevRant is too cool to be considered a waste of time) -
TD;DR: I have school instead of vacation but 5 hours of spare time. I got my laptop with me and I'll work in school.
I didn't want to take part of the course-trip with the 12th graders (my course sucks, there are too many assholes for the neutral people to compensate). After speaking with the director, and the only condition was to tell the course why. I did deliver them a nicely put "fuck you, you bullied my only friend out of this school" and now is the time where I visit the 11-graders while the other 12-ers are on "school vacation".
I got a "new" plan for the courses I should visit. Today, Wednesday, I have 5 FUCKING FREE HOURS IN A ROW. Oh yes, baby, the teacher generating the plan hates me as well. (He really does but it's probably just unlucky not his fault).
So today, I decided, I would take my heavy-ass laptop with me, in a laptop bag, which doesn't fit into the school bag I have and my laptop doesn't fully fit in the laptop bag as well (sticks out), that's the perks of having a laptop!!
— so I can work on my (I wanna say this once in my life without being a professional) "CLIENTS PROJECT" - the funny thing is that the client is a (really fucking good but small) advertising agency and too lazy to design their own website. Since I had my internship, they know how hard I *can* work even without being payed. Now they do wanna pay me but that's another story.
I'm on the bus and I have this monster of a bag which isn't lighter than a freaking huge bag of rice and I'm so fucking excited for this day. The library is my best friend. Hopyfully I'm going to find a socket for power..
Sorry for so many commas, I'm german. :D3 -

A certain custom template engine made by some bored developer who had too much free time and thought he could create something better than other widely used template engines. He somehow convinced the lead dev of the company at that time to use his wonderful creation and it is still there after many years.

My dad took me to a conference in town about microsoft XNA back when it was new. I hate quotes/estimates so damn much
Quote too high and we don't win the work
Quote too low and I screw myself/other devs over
And then there's the fact that most initial quotes for an entire project are based off nothing but a few marketing slides from the potential client; we do re-estimate after winning the work and nailing down what the client actually wants, but obviously it can't be too far from the initial quote
And then there are other people on the company (not devs, obviously) who like to casually expand the scope without checking how much time it'll add4 -
Need advice
Got placed at LnT Infotech through my college placements
Free-lanced at a company for four months and got a job offer from them with the same salary. But the work load is too much. There is no such thing as personal time. It's work 24*7. However, the exposure is good. For one of the projects I was the PM. Had dinner good exposure. But as I said, to much work. I lost quite some weight in the one month that I was the PM.
So now the problem is, should I join an MNC where my exposure will be terrible or a start-up where my personal life will be terrible3 -
What do you do when people(parents) are telling you to go out and tells you you have no life..just because you spend too much time on the computer..and you are actually spending the time learning stuff techniques and technologies which would help you in the future..it just sucks..it kinda looses your morale in a way...19

Sometimes I envy those people whose work is purely clock on / clock off, meaning those that can leave work and switch off to that entirely (delivery driver; mcdonalds etc). Having the time to focus on other things. I have never had that luxury, work consumes far too much of my time, even when not working i am thinking about it. I want the time to pursue my other love which is music, and playing my bass. I like my work but sometimes i fucking hate this path i'm on. Oh well FML.4

I will be here more often in the future!1 -
That's gonna be a quick rant about Golang.
Anyone else here frustrated by the fact that you can inline assignment in the if statement, but can't inline the if-else itself?
You can do:
if thing := hey.getThatThing(); thing == theThing {
return 'this'
} else {
return 'that'
}
But can't do:
return 'this' if hey.getTheThing() == theThing else 'that'
Or is it just me using too much Python everyday and connecting that with Go in free time?5 -
I started learning Golang, at first sign I like it since I came from C++ background so seems very friendly at first sight.
Yesterday I took some time to read algorithms and data structures book and some patterns of language looks quite different for me anyway.
Someone has a good detailed explained book, tutorial or whatever for Golang to share?
I tried the documentation but I didn't understand it too much, looks very advanced for someone is newbie on the language.10 -
This Monday the website I created for my school will go online at 10:45 and about 50 students will start accessing it all at the same time making 20/30 requests each in the timespan of a couple of minutes.
I am very much afraid that it'll go offline or break. And I put my name on it so hopefully everything goes well and Heroku doesn't suddenly decided to restart the server because there's too much traffic.
TBH, I've been a bit stupid, I could easily reduce the number of requests per user. Might do it before Monday.6 -
Solving merge conflict on version control takes too much time, so let's allow only guy to check-in and everyone else work offline keeping several old style working copy with (hell) numbers of backup. Once done everyone sends files to check-in guy.

What to reply to a person who insist to use procedural php for developing website(with lot of services ofc) instead of framework which uses OOP concepts?
And says it will take too much time to learn those concepts and to implement it.1 -
I've been told a number of times that I spend too much time in front of my computer "playing games", where I am actually working hard on work projects and personal projects.
[I wonder how they figured that I am "playing games" when they haven't even seen what I am doing but anyways...]
Some people will just never understand how much dedication and effort my job as a web developer requires.8 -
I never had too much professional experience but I'm feeling so lost during this sprint. New senior developer is running laps around tasks while I'm still struggling with the new code review process we adopted, and still taking my time to understand tasks, I feel useless and even fearful of losing my job as the company (which is a growing startup) starts hiring more people.6
-
MS Office is turning to crap. I have to use it extensively because of my job and it never fails to give me grief. Today I wasted so much time because even though excel is loading a CSV file, it still changes values (like april25 to april-25, or 1.0 to 1) without informing the user or ability to undo or disable, because it thinks it is too smart. :(1

Tldr:
Can't fucking figure out why I'm the only one who can't solve a DP problem in code, when me and friends use the same idea and no one knows why only mine doesn't work...
We are given a task to solve a problem using DP. My friends write their code with the same idea as a solution. Copying the code is not allowed. I follow the same idea but my code won't work. Others look into it, in case they find errors. They can't find any.
The problem (for reference):
Given a fixed list of int's a = (a_1,a_2,...,a_n) and b = (b_1,b_2,...,b_n), a_i and b_i >= 0, a.length == b.length
We want to maximize the sum of a_i's chosen. Every a_i is connected with the b_i at the same index. b_i tells us how many indexes of a we have to skip if choosing the corresponding a_i, so list index of b_i + b_i's value + 1 would be the position of the next a_i available.
The idea:
Create a new list c with same length as a (or b).
Begin at the end of c and save a_n at the same position in c. Iterate backwards through c and at each position add the max value of all previously saved values of c (with regards to the b_i-restriction) with the current a_i, else a_i + 0 if the b_i-resctriction goes beyond the list.
Return the max value of c.
How does that not work for me but for the others?? Funny enough, a few given samples work with my code. I'm questioning my coding ability...7 -
Before I started working, I used to feel like I depended on documentation and the internet a little too much owing to ultra crappy long term memory. After spending some time at my internship going through code written by "professional developers" several years senior to me and trying to write unit tests for it (surprise: the code was in production without having underwent any sort of testing), I feel like the amount of time I spend online reading usage recommendations, alternates for optimisation, best practices for writing clean and descriptive code and all that is a lot more rewarding. Some bad things help you feel good about yourself.

Is managing a open source project more time consuming than a personal one?
Users keep asking me to make my app an open source project (and I have no problems with that), but I am afraid that it would be too much time consuming for me as I maintain 3 apps on the Play Store and also study and practice sport.3 -
My first game jam,
I was first excited about coding but when I started, I was caring about making my code clean, and I lost too much time focusing on this... You should see the end, such a mess ! Spaghetti code, pointers everywhere but hey, it worked 😊 -
That I take everything too serious and it keeps downing my creativity and concentration.
I simply shouldn't give a fuck and learn through failures, because that is much more effective but I got educated to blame myself for mistakes. Stupid education. Takes time to truly understand that though. -
Not using all my time. I really don’t apply myself sometimes. Sometimes that means not using work time efficiently, sometimes that means I get stuck on a simple problem for too long because I don’t think through it. Also, I’m trying to love coding more. It takes a lot of code to get a small result sometimes, and that’s ok. I got hooked on being able to do big things with little code from the start. As we get better we know there’s more that can be done, but we are more familiar with just how much work it really is. At the same time we are more capable than ever of doing it. Just gotta embrace the suck, then love your finished product.1

My mechanical keyboard just died :/ Plugged it into my work tower and started smelling "burnt". its a WASD V3, i hope they can ship me just the controller board because shipping the keyboard to the US and back it's going to take a too much time and money...
-
The secondary access point stopped working, turns out the date/time is wrong. You guessed it, the ntp server is hard-coded in the firmware (last version), no option to change it, it a linksys but not supported by openwrt.
Grabbed a second one, flashed with openwrt, same shit, and can't access by ssh because it's an old dropbear build.
Hate trashing things, but sometimes too much is too much 🍺2 -
Finally reached a point where I’m too tired to keep my eyes open for much longer. Need a long nap and a rest from all screens.
Siesta time.2 -
Use less dev rant. Yes I know it's ironic to post this here, but I waste way too much time on browsing through posts every day :/
-
The one time that I decide to not skim the company newsletter because I've been super busy...
It apparently stated that today would be a holiday....
So I logged in and worked all morning till I asked my boss why they weren't in...
At least it's wfh... And well with I need to get done sooner or later....
Now I'm going to binge tv all afternoon....
Hm... Not much different... Mondays off too... More binging.... -
Hi )
I was wondering how do you guys who work or have worked as freelancers price your websites/projects.
I never had a client before and I don't want to spoil my first chance by pricing too high or too low.
I've heard people asking for 500 dollar or 2000 dollars, depending on how much work and time is involved.
How much would you ask for a simple personal website or a restaurant website?
Thank you very much for your time )5 -
Client gave late template for website and system, after that fpdf for live site wont work, too much to do so little time.
-
You know you spend too much time with computers when the opportunities for new knowledge and time saved from a book titled "sed & awk 101 hacks" get you very excited1
-
Spending too much time on smaller decisions sometimes. Spending 5 minutes thinking about naming a variable and such.
-
My manager, while apparently trying to blast us over taking too much time to understand a product (that no one in the team knows about completely):
I don't understand why you guys don't understand the severity of it. How will you support the product if you don't even know it? There's no comments or anything also, just code! You guys should be able to grasp it!
I'm sorry, what now?
(The part about no comments is true, by the way) -
If I'll ever start a business I have some gold rules for it:
- what you're doing (the difficulty of a project) decides your partial salary, and not the time you're working on it
- if you take a lot of time working on something that should have taken less, you'll be controlled by your supervisor BUT he/she must be gentle and friendly, he/she should be able to understand your problem. If there is something that really could have taken so much time, the partial salary will be higher, otherwise, you'll get a strike
- after some strike you'll be "reviewed", we must understand if you're joking or you really want this work.
- there must be a lot of free time, we don't like stress
- your supervisor (as written before) must be gentle and friendly. If these qualities aren't met we must find a new supervisor (of course there will be a survey)
- you should come to work with a smile, if an activity is too much stressful you should report it, and take a pause (here comes the free time)
- I don't care if you have a degree, what you CAN do is what I'm searching for.16 -
Not sure if Google is surprised this happens or they really never face issues using Gradle
Edit:
Took 4 minutes to compile a basic flutter app. But it takes 1.3 minutes to compile a native app. So far liking flutter, still hating React Native tho1 -
Currently I am at a small company and there is another developer bit senior than me. When he interferes in the project assigned to me and suggest his ideas (may not be the best always) I feel too much terrible coz I like to explore on my own and learn from that. Obviously I will be bit slower than others. This happens most of the time and now a days I feel very low and even the boss blindly prioritizes his ideas and that hurts !!2

I don’t understand blockchain enthusiasts. I even spent some time studying the concept and application examples. Most of the time they use private networks removing the concept of distribution, many other times regular database and signature techniques would be cheaper and more practical and anyway these ready made solutions are actually black boxes for the final users because messing around with blockchain would require too much skills… But if you have to trust these black boxes, you could actually just trust any centralized service… I really can’t understand…10

Was working in an n-tier website, standard Web forms, BAL, DAL, database architecture. Validation and processing of data done in the BAL. Not the best idea, but whatever. Well apparently some developer thought it was too much work to pass his data through the BAL, so he directly accessed the DAL, performing zero validation on the data being passed in. Luckily, this was in a non-critical part of the site but the PM at the time nearly had a heart attack when I told him.

This is going to follow my rant from last week's group rant.
My biggest dev regret is not having confidence in myself and my work. It took me fifteen years to build up enough confidence to do this professionally, and I feel like I lost way too much time. Who knows what I could have contributed in that time? We'll never know because I was too busy feeling sorry for myself.
Oh, I know I'm hard on myself as well. Being self-taught, I have to be. For years I had no one else to hold me accountable. My boss usually has to soften my own critiques on my self-eval. -
OCD driven development
- level of recursion determined by how much the algorithm bothers you
- too much and nothing is ever finished
- not enough and code is shitty and unmaintainable
- can result is longer variable names
- takes longer to name a variable
- text slightly misaligned requires hours of debugging time
- balanced by "OMFG that will take forever to fix" Sometimes...
- can lead to unobjective code reviews1 -
We checked a rather important part in our communication services because it was throwing errors from time to time.
Asked our former technical project lead if he could help us since he developed it.
"I don't really know why it's doing that, I got it from a online example so I know as much as you do"
Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit, it seems I can be a senior developer too!2 -
I think some of us have moved past the apocalypse and some how landed in utopia.
Person online complaining their app build is slow and wants tips for speeding it up, apparently 23 seconds is too much time to wait.
Personally if my app build is going to be slow I prefer around the “how long it takes to make coffee” timeframe. Can’t even turn on my machine in 23 seconds...3 -
!rant
Long time no rant..
Although work is way too much and stressful, things are actually not too bad at all..back to the office (voluntary), got back into to a routine, got a raise way below what it should be, lots of "off the books" overtime that I'll never be able to compensate, but.. still not to bad at all.. feeling better than I have for the last couple of years.. 👌 -
Currently there are 1273 plugins awaiting review after submission to WordPress plugin server. Nearly as much as the 1345 open "type: bug" issues in WordPress/gutenberg on GitHub. Reminds me of "Suggested edit queue is full" on StackOverflow. Either too many people contribute to open source, or too little seniors willing and able to review, or our workflows don't work well enough. But good to see that there is still stuff going on in communities and not everyone just playing around with AI tools or uploading social media content all the time.1
-
Not using design pattern on a school project because he was too busy understanding what the fuck was Smalltalk since no one understood it in classes.
yes it was me. I don't blame myself, I really took too much time understanding that (and I was the only one to do that, the other just asked me. ALL OF THEM). But I should, I guess. -
We hired a new project manager and he decided that we should document our whole platform which was very lacking.
But now, for every minor feature/rework, he expects that it should also be documented. Currently, it feels we have too much documentation that is not easily searchable... Half our time is maintaining Jira and the other 40% is maintaining the code and 10% is developing new features....
Is there a thing as too much documentation?9 -
Im so tired of shitting. I shit too much. If only i could unwrap the bottom part of my body like a robot so i can put the asshole part to sit on the toilet 24/7 while i sit (or float) on the chair and code. Shits (literally) wasting my time by shitting. Tomorrows an interview and I'll probably shit so so much from all the bullshit I'll have to listen6

Shout out to my fellow not American programmers that are constantly getting the spelling of colour wrong. Constantly having you word processor nag at you because you spent too much time programming and are spelling it with a letter U, or constantly having your debugger nag at you because it doesn't know what "colour"4
-
I was probably 5 or so.
This was during the time when i heard that dial up modem sound from my dad's "computer room" every night when i went to bed.
The computer had a huge CRT monitor which made that annoying high pitch noise but i loved playing with it so much i didn't mind.
My dad installed a Croatian knock off version of Super Mario from a floppy disk he got from a magazine (i still have it lol).
Every time you died you'd have to start the game again by typing "mario" in CMD. Me and my sister played it so much we became pros.
He also tried explaining how he codes in Turbo C but i guess i was too young to understand it. -
In the other day i was restarting my windows machine like a normal procedure but it was taking too much time. I waited and sudently in the middle of the restart I got a blue screen and the PC restarts.
I am like OK....... Well at least boots up :)
I need to tell my boss that we need to change to linux. -
I'm starting to feel like coding is too much boilerplate all the time.
I've been thinking about why, and I think (and I'm trying to sound humble here) it's because I'm usually honoring the SRP. But this entails this enormous drawback of enormous amount of code!
Don't get me wrong, I'm usually glad with the design I end up with .... but only after what seems to be hours of typing
Anyone recognize this problem? Suggestions, comments?1 -
How much time do you take usually to code a backend with simple crud operations and notification system?
It's taking me some time, but I feel I'm going too slow...7 -
Does anyone else ever get really down when you spend too much time away from your project? I feel myself retracting from society and all I ever want to do is drink coffee and teach myself stuff and work on my game.
It's getting to the point where I don't even want to see my gf and I don't even think about food. I see this happening to me in real time, but I don't want to stop it because I know it's what I need to accel. It's just, damn, it all makes me kind of sad and reflective.5 -
Does wanting to leave a company simply because of legacy code with no documentation and too much work a bit reason? I guess it probably is as anywhere could have the same thing :) Maybe management would be better suited for me, time to take courses8
-
for the 3rd time ive tried introducing some version control on a project that really needs it because it has multiple people working on it.
And because the last time my efforts got shut down because in practice people thought it was too much of a hassle to develop locally rather than on the shared development server directly, I made a feature that would let people checkout branches on said server...
Apparently the action of; saving > committing > pushing to your feature branch > merge after aproval, is still too much for people to comprehend; "I think this is too convoluted can't we just keep pushing to the production server to check our work and then commit and push to the master branch"
So I just got pissed and said fuck it, no more git then, I'm not even going to put any effort into changing tooling here anymore, and this is a massive project where we have to manually remove code that isnt ready yet from the staging environment.
Are the people I'm working with just this stupid or am I really overengineering this solution because I think 4 people should not be working on the same file at the same time without any form of version control and just direct upload to FTP.
(and yes, I know I should leave this job already, but social anxiety of starting at a new company is a big obstacle for me)3 -
"This module wraps around this genuinely awesome database and provides all the in-memory storing of the database so that nothing is persisted"
nice, just like I need it
Hudden truth:
"but in order to make it non-persistent you have to clear the database on every startup"
This shit cost me so much fucking time time, works needs it's sucked for every transaction, just for basic features not being implemented and performing even worse than standard choices because you can't leverage it's power for shit?
Fucking waste of time. I could have finished the Api with the standart module a long time ago, but I'm such and idiot and want to step outside my comfortzone too much.
I'm switxhing the fuxk back and maybe I get this done within 3 hours1 -
"Take this test," they said.
I did, and scored 81/100. Not great, but not bad.
"Not bad," they said. "But you took too much time and didn't show us experience in JavaScript."
I completed all tasks in the allotted time and did them all in JavaScript. What else am I supposed to do for you people?1 -
I don't know why but the default settings in Ubuntu have changed quite a lot. There was once a glorious time when if your Ubuntu got stuck, you could press Ctl + Alt + F2-F6, login to a console, run top command to see which process was taking too much time and kill it, and you can go back and start the process and again.
I remember days(~15-20 days) between restarts of my laptop, because I could do that. But now, my Ubuntu gets stuck, and continues to get stuck for about 5-10 mins, and then just restarts.
I have run the disk checks to see if my hard disk is creating issues, but no issues there. Maybe, there are times when the processes execute some buggy code and cannot get out. One fine moment, one of the processes(probably a browser or Eclipse), starts using too much memory or cpu, and the whole worlds seems to be crashing down.
But, my control to kill it promptly without crashing my other applications, was so good to have. And now, every time this happens, I feel 2016-17 and earlier days were so much better.12 -
Hello. I desperately need someones help to help me set up python flask starting template website with apache on digital ocean server. Over teamviewer please.
I promise you there is not a lot to set up cause i have been configuring it for days. If i waste too much of your time trying to set it up, i will pay you.
Thank u. Anyone interested leave me your discord. -
So... I got this “Bitshift Variations in C Minor” code golf to work on a Mac if anyone is interested: http://txti.es/bitshiftvariationsin...
Here is the original, which probably works on Linux: http://txti.es/bitshiftvariationsin... -
BIG QUESTION TIME:
I want to start a small web-dev project. Basically a website with different gigs like a time tracking app. Maybe extend it in the future with other apps.
First I thought of starting with a CMS (I am quite good with Joomla!) but realized it may too soon get to its' limits and personalized extensions are quite a pain with CMS.
So I had this genius idea of working on frontend using ReactNative giving the opportunity to build for mobile in the same time and backend with Python (maybe Django framework).
Here are my questions:
1) Could this be a good solution or combination? (Considering it is more of a fun project)
2) Does anyone know a good tutorial for ReactNative besides the facebook github tutorial?2 -
Went to take a shit
But before i rolled my pants down i thought about having to waste time to roll my pants down waste time to sit down waste time to shit waste time to wipe waste time to get up waste time to pull my pants up waste time to back to chair and frankly.... i got quite overwhelmed already so i said Fuck off just stfu and shit inside my guts. And so i did. I refused shitting in toilet and got back to my chair to let my stomach now shit inside me and shit all over my guts. Fuck off. Dont give a fuck. Im too old and too fucking tired to waste so much time shitting. From now on ill have to hold my shit and shit inside of myself until i really really cant take the load and need to dump it somewhere outside my body
So because of that I'll literally walk full of shit. I'll be The Shit. Full of bullshit. Exactly how full of bullshit are the recruiters are the entire job market, and especially, how FULL of BULLSHIT is the ENTIRE CORPORATE WORLD6 -
Product designer keeps on changing designs and managers approve it every single time. Totally frustrated to work. Why can't they think of scenarios based on design? Why should they allow me work on something guaranteeing that things won't be changed but change every single time.
I know product specs change, but too much of change frustrates the developer. Why does no body care for developer's mindset? -
I would like to completely communicate via email to obtain clients. Not Skype; that is clients calling me through Skype and the phone. Has anyone done this? I've found that phone calls/Skype wastes so much time. Time that could be spent gaining a client and starting their project. However people love the phone calls and Skype way too much.10

Every time I have to use CloudWatch, I feel like I'd be more productive if I shoved glass shards in my eyes.
Every query/filter either returns nothing or errors out because too much is returned.2 -

I noted music is disaster for my work. It distracts I loose my focus and efficiency decrease also.
mood swingings when I listen too much music I have a hated feeling l. So I decided to quite listening music during work.

I think that Android native is great, but it takes too much time for a tiny progression, i might use one of the frameworks such as flutter or react native or even nativescript since I'm learnings vue js currently.
Any help or advice?6 -
I love Github copilot, he saves so much time, speeds up the code writing. N understands me at times too.4

I am working on my website getmeroof.com, and I am using Angular 5. I just finished a test task which was almost a whole project...
actually just 2 forms but some of the requirements were such that if I don't implement user registration and login and what not I can't make it to work the desired way... plus there was some point where I need to inform the user that he is giving too much money... and yeah, do they want it to have integrated payments too?
the time limit was 2 hours... and I'm new to their framework, so I did the 2 forms and the listing of the 1st db rows as wanted below one of the forms and sent them the result asking for clarifications and more time
do you get such test tasks ( I mean with a lot of things for that short amount of time )?3 -
Yeah... I spent way too much fucking time thinking my multi threading was fucked up. When in actuality I had a parameter in a JSON payload for an API call I neglected to check for changes.
A fucking form id! Just one parameter had me frustrated for 2 hours.1 -
Apple products are free as long as you spend too much money.

Happened to me on my current project, a client said "I know that we'll have some budgetary restrictions, so I prefer to ask you a lot of features now, 'cause I don't know much time the dev team will stay...".
Thank you for making our project fail by asking too much ... -
So I observed that my screen time was slowly increasing in past few weeks. This was mainly because there wasn't much to do staying at home and I was simply switching between phone and laptop continuously which was increasing my eye strain. Fed up of this never ending cycle I decided yesterday to log out of all social networks and only see all the social updates only once a day.
Let's hope this gradually decreases my screen time and eye strain too... -
So I’m not having too much trouble with my project. Does that mean I’m doing something too easy or have I actually just absorbed the knowledge I’ve been reading?
I’ve never actually used EF Core before and I thought this would be harder, and more time consuming.2 -
The comments on the code Apollo Guidance Computer (1960s) is so much fun! Also, funny in parts. We modern programmers are too formal in our comments! Code is on Github.

If I make a character oscillate on my screen, and match its time period to my camera's fps, it should seem still on my camera in theory right? I tried to implement it like this: https://www.paste.org/115774 but I can't figure out what could be going wrong, my guesses are either I'm expecting too much precision, or my camera's fps fluctuates a little, either way, please let me know what you think could be going wrong.18

I have to write a text that explains the kalman filter and I'm expected to include some light technical details, too. I've just barely used it in its simplest form and have almost no understanding about the stochastic aspect of it. So I had this Case tools lab during my 5th semester of college and they asked everyone to do a project. Me hoping that they will see the project and appreciate the work, did a good one and I spent day and night on it. Then came the finals. The fucking teacher who was asked to evaluate me didn't even open my project properly and just entered the marks just seeing the home page. It was that fucking day that I hated my college so much. Now I don't spend too much time on projects for my college. Worst Dev experience!

quite obviously the idea that they supposedly loop everything because there is no proof of life beyond a point when they are the ones that stole over and over remains their fault and needs to be remedied with a nice happy life here forthcoming. since most especially remembering more time past this.
which if they're trying to confuse things contained HAPPY FUCKING THINGS TOO. since its all the same time period supposedly right ?

Oh btw thanks so much for occupying some inhuman assholes time who taunted me with my own property and videos and then stole them again
But could have just shot him too.
As with most of these inhuman pieces of robot garbage who randomly decided it was time to live like crazy pieces of whore shit long past where anyone or anything would ever want to put something into their pedo private parts12 -
There is a bug that's annoying me for too much time now. If you press on a tab like 'week' and then quickly on another one like 'day' top weekly rants still show up.

Once upon a time I was working with an engineer who loved sed and awk a bit too much. We had data stored in SharePoint that was retrievable via an RSS feed. Said engineer insisted on using curl to grab the feed and sed/awk to parse the HTML ...
I on the other hand suggested using libcurl (primarily for NTLM auth support) and parsing the RSS feed using libxml.
Which engineer do you think management decided supporting?
Hint: Reusability and maintainability were big requirements in this project.1 -
Calling QA/ Test managers for help !
Im a junior dev at a company where im slowly transitioning into also being our test lead. I just got my ISTQB foundation and im starting to write out the test strategy for our company.
Currently we’r doing alot of reactice testing, and to implement more proactive testing i wanted to implement a risk strategy as well.
Problem is that i feel this strategy takes too much time for our organization (doing risk analysis for each story we’r implementing just isnt possivle) , and we don’t have time for me actinh as a full time Test manager while also doing software dev tasks.
Question is: what good proactive strategies can we implement that doesnt require too much time investment - or could we use risk strategy only for specific stories implemented / custom orders / etc and stick with a reactive strategy solely ?
Later this yesr ill be sent on ISTQB test manager course to better qualify my position but until then id really want to get a test strategy somewhat implemented
Any help is MUCH appriciated!10 -
I'm playing the cookie clicker game, it's really good but it's very difficult to win and takes a lot of time. Is there a way to upgrade properly? Good game but takes too much time to set the record?3
