the best way to learn programming is not by just reading books and coding basic examples. it is to take up a project which seems impossible and start doing it piece by piece, with the help of Google and stack overflow14

Clickbait will never change.
It's the most stable and constant source of mild annoyance.
2019 internet:
"These 3 programming languages will net you the highest salary"
"Ten home improvement tips using nothing but recycled underwear"
"How to cut onions like a real chef"
2020 internet:
"3 programming languages to learn while being bored in self-quarantine"

When someone says he's going to learn a programming language and people start saying
'you should learn x instead of y'
Fuck those people.
fuck 'em13 -
Programming as much as I can now because I've been behind on my school stuff so for the rest of the month no programming until I catch up and go ahead.
I can't wait till college so I can learn whatever I want.25 -
When I started to learn functional programming I asked myself: "What the hell is this?"
Fast forward a couple of years, I still wonder what 'this' is.7 -
A teacher who came to see if I'm programming correctly asked me to start my curly braces on a new line like
F()
{

because where the fuck did you learn the other version
F() {

" that's just wrong"28 -

How to start coding (for fucktards)
1: Choose desired programming language like python or java
2: Search on youtube or google: "<language> tutorial beginner"
3: if step 2 was to hard for you...
STOP learning how to program, you are hopeless
4: Instead of asking everyone on how to learn programming, just fucking DO IT already!
Seriously, if you don't even know how to use google and youtube to educate yourself programming is NOT FOR YOU!9 -
A business analyst turned to one dev and she asked him:
- Can you teach me programming?
- Yeah, sure. Do you have any idea which language do you want to learn?
- Nonono, I dont want to learn languages, I want to learn programming.4 -
Wikihow: how to start programming.

Created a Python Course chatbot over at LINE Messenger. At first I thought it wouldn’t even helped anyone learn programming but now I got over 230 active students learning each day. This is great!21

School: Do you want to learn programming?
Me: Yes.
School: Do you want to learn about operation systems and networks?
Me: Yeah, sounds cool.
School: Do you also want to learn basic electrophysics?
Me: But I will rarely need it if I become a SE.
School: Well too bad!8 -
My programming teacher at university is programming like this. I'd better not learn anything from him30

After interviewing 3 candidates for software today, I have officially decided its time to seriously pursue creating a YouTube channel with a complete set of series to learn programming MY WAY... not the short cut way... this will go all the way to beginning and start the person up with a solid foundation to build on... I’m going to pour my knowledge into these series.
The education system has failed too many in the real world... to many people I have interviewed they think they know have a degree but are clueless.. this is unacceptable and a waste... AND way too often I see online “learn programming in 30 days or learn programming in a day”... fuck off it’s all lies .. all wrong.. wrong methods wrong philosophy and I’m done with it...
I’m set on doing it this time, I’ve put it off too long, and longer I put it off the more I see shitty interviews! Time to fix it68 -
All these people talking about learning to code at school makes me feel old. There wasn't even an option to learn programming when I was at school. Had to teach myself!4
-
We are using this book for a subject
"Open Source Technologies"
No wonder how my classmates are gonna learn Android programming from this book.
I'm grateful to myself that I learned it online.8 -
How did I learn to program?
It's the funniest story actually.
I studied Computer Engineering where I took programming courses.4 -
Oh the ups and down of learning code. One day you feel like a programming prodigy, the next you hit a concept that makes you feel like you'll never become a professional programmer. So much to learn!!!! 😭😭7
-
Non-dev thing that made me a better dev?
Music, and trying to learn music theory. I was never very good at it, still am not, but the harder I try at this, the easier programming becomes...7 -
I really like programming in Haskell.
Everyone I know seems to hate it (or prefer to work with oo-languages)
Any friendly Haskeller here who wants to collab/teach/learn from each other? ._.'8 -
Python be like
"Yeah this is the absolute best beginner language to learn programming concepts"
Python also be like
"Yeah well we couldnt implement 70% of programming concepts because the ast is retarded but heres a library for drawing 3d cats with a printer"30 -
When u are new into programming.... Ur zeal is very high .... You wanna learn all programming languages at the same time...#haba1
-
Realizing no programming language or concept or theory is too hard to learn. My retinas may burn out staring at my screens but I will get there eventually.3
-
So I was very bored in IT class and I asked my teacher to give me some extra exercises. What did he gave me??? Scratch. A Tool for 8 year old kids to learn some programming basics.. fml7
-
Are programming related questions welcomed here? My stupid fucking questions always get downvoted at Stackoverflow and I feel discouraged and frustrated and just plain so stupid which don't really help me learn. . .15
-
Stack Overflow is the largest, most trusted online community for developers to learn, share their programming knowledge, and build their careers.
But don't worry, no one will ever answer you lol.2 -
so java thinks any jdk different from what the jre is targeting is "out-of-date", you should learn this in "how to not look like an idiot 101" programming class in elementary school. oracle.2

How did I learn programming ?
Because careers page on EA said: "Bachelor's degree in Computer Science"4 -
Making a Twitch chat bot withing four days after starting to learn programming and python.
The downside is that now that I look a it I feel a bit embarrassed with the mess I made. But hey, it works!1 -
Being under 1000 rep on stackoverflow is elo hell. All you get are downvotes for non-duplicate, sensible and well explained questions. I think most of SO community is pretty fucking toxic towards people trying to learn programming.11
-
What is your favourite thing about programming?
Mine is that there is always something new to learn11 -
Was anyone forced to learn an obscure programming language during college? If so what was it and have you used it since?
Mine was ADA95 and nope lol28 -
I saw an article saying, What Programming Language Should I Learn First? 2017
It suggested, JavaScript!
😏 hmmm....
What do you think, yes or no?
(And no this is not personal question, just an article I was reading 😃)22 -
I recently recognized voting buttons are (++) and (--), then shared my friend near me but he didn't get anything. I explained what do they mean.
Thanks devRant, a lawyer started to learn programming 😁2 -
While Google is developing breakthrough AI systems that might quite possibly pass the Turing tests in the near future, my university suggests I learn JQUERY and calls the course Advanced Web Programming4

Do some cool shit that I’ve always wanted to do.
- learn more about machine learning and computer vision

- learn embedded systems / programming
- learn more EE centered stuff3 -
As for programming: (will do a cyber one later)
Don't *ALWAYS* only study/learn programming solely for learning it as this can be demotivating at times, find a cool project to do and learn while developing that!
This is how I learned programming in a fun way :)5 -
If you can, attend programming contests, code retreats, and meetups, you'll learn a lot from that, experiences like have a fun talk with mate devs about this awesome environment while drinking some beers or eating some pizza is fantastic1
-
My friend in 2016 : I will learn how to program and quit this miserable job.
My friend in 2017: Wow programming is taking off I need to learn how to code
Just waiting for the same message in 2018 now...3 -
My classmates are wining, because they suck at programming-tests but don't even try to learn it.
Big AF facepalm!6 -
Programming should be like art, where you try and learn different skills and tools to get better over time.... Not a continuous game of whack-a-mole where your try to hit everything with a hammer...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯6 -
I am that person who'll try to do everything (web dev, games, apps etc) in one programming language coz I'm too lazy to learn another language. Maybe it's because I've never had a real dev job before.5
-
Intern : "Stackoverflow is the most friendly platform to learn coding. They provide a good certification for programming skill."
Me : " Stop this bullshit before I present you a smack-overflow across your face."
Since when Stackoverflow described as freecodecamp?6 -
-I'm gonna learn C for real
-I'm gonna configure Vim
-I'm gonna try November
-Emacs with Evil mode is a better Vim

-init.el is 400 lines long
int main() {printf("Hello World!");}
Success! 🤦♂️1 -
As time goes on.. I see my friends, whom I studied programming with, just stop learning new things.
They think, or just behave, like they know everything worth knowing.
You can't talk to them about programming outside of work anymore. They just say that programming is "something you do at work".
I used to look-up to those people, and learn a lot from them. Now, they don't care enough to Google "what's this Rust thing people talk about?".
That really saddens me.2 -
People refusing to learn an improved programming language or technology, because it might contradict to what they "already know" and you're just there mastering it and appreciating its advantages that you will never learn if you had a closed mindset.4
-
For those of you iOS Swift developers, how long did it take to learn and have a decent app with database functionality, coming from a different programming language background?8
-
When someone asks you what programming language they should learn, don't tell them the one you prefer.
Instead, ask them what area they plan to focus on, like,
Web frontend: javascript
Web backend: javascript
Mobile apps: javascript
Games: javascript
AI: javascript6 -
Should I try to learn functional programming or focus on a lower level language?
My strongest language is C#.
I'm looking at F# or Rust atm.
Thoughts?19 -
A lot of things dev say are true, but this one I don't believe as much:
Many devs say that it's important for everybody to learn a bit of a basic programming language, to learn about computers and how programs are made. I disagree, I think that instead people should learn *how* things work. Ex, in my school people always use a VPN to get around the proxy. I don't care if they know basic statements, I think it's more important to learn how a VPN works. Most of them don't even know what VPN stands for. Am I the only one?3 -
how did people here learn programming? interested in hearing your journey from discovery of programming to now.22
-
Random question that apparently screwed up even Google...
how does an IDE evaluate (and format) code and errors so quickly?
Was thinking maybe building a compiler/programming language would be the best way to learn/practice algorithm... Is it?19 -
If you're currently in college and wish to get placed in a major tech giant like Amazon or Facebook:
Don't learn React.js, instead learn Linked lists.
Don't learn Flutter, instead learn Binary search trees.
Don't learn how to perform secure Authorization with JWTs, instead learn how to recursively reverse a singly linked list.
Don't learn how to build scalable and fault tolerant web servers, instead learn how to optimally inverse a binary search tree.
These big tech companies don't really care what real world development technologies you've mastered. Your competence in competitive programming and data structures is all that matters.
The system is screwed. Or atleast I am.18 -
Sololearn has probably the dumbest community I've ever seen...
I know that there are lot of beginners who just started learning programming, but if you can't even use the app, I don't think they will be able to learn programming.
Also all these little kiddies who want to get some badass hackers but don't even know how to do a fucking course (There are lots of questions like "Where can I learn HTML" while they are right in the fucking app, like holy sheeet).
Sometimes I browse the Q&A just because there so funny and dumb questions. Really amusing!8 -
Hey, does anyone have some tips to learn programming faster? I have the problem that I often forget little things; /15
-
If number of people using Pokemon Go tries to learn programming go the world would be much better place to code.
-
Stop sucking at competitive programming
Learn Android development with kotlin
Learn machine learning and apply it -
I'm in a programming school that gives only projects in C and a method to learn quickly.
Then we don't have official web classes or anything so we have "Labs" or "Clubs" and last time I was at a web programming club, leaded by students (because it gives me some more credits).
I was very surprised because they began to try to learn us the Javascript without talking about DOM.
And their explications about server-side and client-side codes were not clear (and obviously not exhaustive).
I have some (not a lot neither) experience in web programming so I helped him to make his course more understandable but I can't believe that these courses are given by students who don't have any idea of what's web programming...3 -
My dad got us a a home computer on ~1995 without video games. But he brought a software where we can program our own games. So, we learn programming.4
-
Happy New Year!
This year I am going to learn new programming languages and they are: Python, Java/JavaScript, C/C#/C++ and the Linux Terminal.
I can't wait!11 -
Many articles about the best languages to learn, here's one about the worst
Source: https://uk.dice.com/technews/...6 -
Learn how to shoot yourself in the foot in various programming languages 😃
http://toodarkpark.org/computers/...4 -
I read books on programming. The thing I most like about programming books is that they allow you to learn about topics that you would have never have thought to explore. When people look things up online, they tend to search very specific things, most times actual code. The internet is an incredible source for developers, don't get me wrong. But books allow you to learn about programming in a conceptual way which in turn will make learning new languages easier and allow your understanding of the languages you already know to be deeper.
-
Which language do you hate the most, and why?
Mine is Java, maybe because I've been learning about it since I started to learn programming on class.. getting tired and bored since I met Js and Python10 -
Today’s frontend bitches appropriating functional programming like “ancient programming secrets” is exactly like eighties con artist bitches appropriating yoga and ayurveda like “ancient well-being secrets”
Just plain wrong and laughable
Go learn cs11 -

Never thought calculas is going to be required in programming.2 -
No brain. Half 11 at night is not a good time to learn a new programming language. Please be quiet so I can get some sleep and go back to working on really boring things tomorrow without being grumpy about it
-
Little brother wants learn programming and asked me if I could help him learn it.
"Sure, I'll show you how I learned it."
Gave him a book for starters to go through it. To have a slightly better time, I'll read his code and recommend some ways to go.
In my opinion it's important to learn to learn by yourself and learn to help yourself. Therefore I think this is kinda a good way to start with a bit of supervision from me.
What do u think of it, or how would you have done it?
I mean sure I could be some kind of teacher, but with a fulltime job + uni I don't really have time for that.4 -
I am 17 years old, and I am trying to learn programming. I am currently trying to learn something in BASH. I have also used some JavaScript and Python to get a grasp of some concepts.
It is very satisfying when I am in the mood, but I often find it hard to find motivation to learn. Does anyone have any advice for studying techniques? General advice would also make me very grateful! :-)
I hope this is OK to post here..5 -
Hi friends.
I'm 19 years old programmer and working already. My father is 47 years old. He don't know anything about programming yet. When he was young he was good in math.
Today when I came home he said that he would like to learn programming too and help me to do some projects in the future. I know it's kind of late for him to start learning something new, but what do you think, what can I do to help him start programming? What's the startpoint for 47 years old man in the world of programming.
P.S. He tried to learn Java watching online tutorials but couldn't understand anything.10 -
---12.018 HE----
I want to
- finish my A-Levels
- play less & do more
- work on side project
- learn lots of new programming stuff
- have a great time (making my gf happy <3)1 -
I hate programming tutorials for a complicated language like c++ that are dedicated to absolute beginners of programming. If you've never coded before, why are you trying to learn c++?5
-
So guys, do you think I should learn one functional programming language and if so should it be haskell?2

I would like to get a little bit into functional programming.
Do you have any language suggestions to learn?14 -

I hate mostly all of my inability to focus and the fact that I like programming. Surprisingly, they aren't a good match. Im trying to actually learn Java and react native. Anyone have any solutions for quick and effective ways to learn?10
-
Want to know again how it felt like when programming for the first time? Learn Prolog, it fucking twists your brain inside out. It's pretty cool tho, very very challenging.3
-
Question here - what do you guys think of Kotlin?
Do you also think it'll be sufficient to learn Kotlin and not java to programm for Android?
I just began the transition, it's fun playing around with it, but a friend of mine wants to learn Kotlin to learn Android programming (and not java, he only has java basics).
What's your opinion on all this?12 -
Learn JavaScript.!!
Everybody talk about functional programming, I was thinking why php json_encode is not working on large array.
Javascript is Awesome.2 -
What if I’m dumb as hell in reality and I don’t recognize it. I keep holding on to this false belief that I can learn programming, but going nowhere in reality. What if I don’t have any talent at all?10
-
I was 17 and the class was tasked with programming a calculator in machine code! I was hooked went on to learn Java first, then C and C++. Now finished Uni having studied AI and Robotics and in my first job! I call myself a developer but I know there is still so much to learn in our ever changing industry!
-
"The only way to learn a new programming language is by writing programs in it." - Dennis Ritchie
So, how are you learning - By writing programs or by Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V? 😛3 -
Want to learn a new programming language. My main language is JavaScript and I spent most of my team learning to create full stack applications with it, but I would like to learn a second language to focus on. (I already have some experience in Java and Python and JavaScript wasn't my first language but I like JS)
Are there any languages that you could suggest me?8 -
What are the things in computer science do I need to learn?
So yeah, I'm still in high school and will be entering IT in a few years, but I am willing to learn now. I already have a good grasp of programming and can create good desktop apps and basic web apps, so teaching basic concepts such as variables, loops, functions is done for me.. But what computer science concepts should I learn next?18 -
question:I just learnt c++ programming language and i really cant find a use of this language except iot and really simple programs, how can i make gui programs, or should i learn more languages??10

Should I learn Haskell? Would it help me with other coding languages as well?
My main language is JavaScript, also I would like to learn functional programming.2 -
It has been always so annoying me to learn git !! Why I feel it so difficult than a programming language ??!!6
-
Studying human languages.
They are so much more complex than a programming language and full of irregularities and stuff you can't really learn but have to 'feel'. This helped me a lot developing methods to learn new things quite easily and knowing foreign languages are kinda useful when I have to communicate with people too.3 -
I've been trying to diversify programming languages I know.
It's been rough; I just don't like a lot of the high level programming languages and low level ones are often tough to learn to for someone without formal CS background.
Then I tried Go, and you should too!9 -
Hi, sorry to bother anyone but I'm a high school junior looking for advice on learning computer programming and related topics
I just want to ask what kind of resources I should look for and some things I should try to learn before I graduate high school (a school with no programming courses. :( sadly)
Any advice or help is appreciated. Thank you for your time15 -
Why the fuck do everyone want to teach "web development ", "programming ", "software engineer"...."coding". Everywhere I visit - I am hunted with "learn coding".8
-
I've been programming for 5 years now and every single day I find stuff I have to learn like trending frameworks or git stuff. Otherwise I'm considered nothing.
-
What technology/concept/programming language did you learn that made you feel way way more brilliant?
Me: Shell scripting, feel like god 😌18 -
Do you agree with me that once you understand and mastered one programming language, when you want to learn other languages or library is very easy. At least you know what to Google search.10
-
Hello guys. Im new to programming I know some basic c and c++ . I was hoping if someone could help me with some sites to learn new programming languages. Thank you.7
-
I feel so overwhelmed. I feel like I'm never going to actually learn everything about programming. I feel like I'm just going to learn some new API every time I want to do some thing. I feel like I'll lose the ability to do basic programming. I feel like I need a cup of coffee.3
-
What the heck!
Are kids these days that smart?! I can't imagine a 3 yr old being able to communicate properly or let alone sit still to learn something properly.
I was dumb af and playing all the time till my 6th age.
Thoughts?4 -
C# or c++. Hi im starting to learn programming and i have to decide between c# or c++. I use linux as my os. What do you think?17

Hi everyone,
I have a question, what should learn if I want to make products for example like headphones or laptops and stuff like that. Till now ive only been programming and making pc games. And where could I learn it? Thanks!9 -
i wish i had no university classes (or at least, only programming classes) so that i could learn more about different technologies and had more time to code :(3
-
I think, in a few years programming will be like driving. It will be so easy to learn that almost everyone would be a programmer.3
-
Trying to learn Spanish for last 10 years and in the time, I have used at least 20 programming languages.
Nothing is as easy as it is.15 -
I like programming but too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing 🤔 I dunno
Me programming year 1️⃣: I want to learn as much as I can
Me programming year 2️⃣: I want to solve this complicated problem and surpass the expectations
Me programming year 3️⃣: I want to solve this complicated problem and get paid
Me programming year 4️⃣: I want to solve this complicated problem even if it is difficult & stressful
....
Me programming year 8️⃣: I aint want nothing no more..4 -
I am looking for new programming language to learn and I found D language. It looks interesting but I think that community is weak and there is lack of some usefull libraries.
For example I can not find secure PRNG.
So my questions are:
> Have you any experience with this language?
> It is worth to learn?3 -
beginner: what is the best way to learn programming in one day?
Dev: take your laptop pack your bags and go to one of earths polls and do programming from sunrise to next sunrise. you will definitely learn programming.😎2 -
In the programming aspect of CS, you should have to debug and fix a previous student's project for your final grade.
You don't really learn to appreciate the value of clean code until you've had to fix shitty code. -
Work hard. Seriously. If its your first job, prepare yourself for 1 year in front. Learn programming, repeat, repeat more, fail, gain expertise. Surprise them with everything you do, blow the others out of the water with your knowledge.
-
Does anyone know good resources to learn Arduino Programming?
I have a basic understanding of C, I am looking for a series (of articles preferably) that walks you through the available libraries and the electrical engineering side of things.5 -
who believes that the best way to learn something is practicing it even without a huge knowledge ?
I do the same with english
and I'll do the same while learning Agentspeak
an agent-oriented programming language3 -
I was bored so I learned HTML/CSS, I was like "eh, programming is easy!".
So I learned C next and I was like "eh, programming is kinda hard actually".
So I learned to program rather than learn a language, got back to C until I was comfortable with it.
Nothing is hard now :D2 -
So my friend and I have been casually talking about developing some indie games. I, being the one who knows programming, tried convincing him to learn some code.
Me: Hey, did you read the books?
Him: What books?
Me internally: ‘ok, maybe he just used some of the online guides’
Me: How’s [code learning app]
Him: Oh! I downloaded that the other day!
Me: Oh cool! What’s your account name?
Him: oh, I downloaded it but never actually opened it
Me internally:’fuuuuuuuuu-‘
Me: Did you learn any programming?
Him: nope
Me: WELL THEN FUCKING LEARN IT!!!!!
We don’t really talk to much anymore.1 -
That's why I'm always tired:
I go to learn some framework, I bump into a term that ends up being a whole other programming language that uses a tool that needs 2 months to learn... and there's just so much stuff to learn!!! -
I am a programming teacher in Colombia and the week's topic is very useful for me, thanks to all for writing your ideas, but in the other hand I think that some points have not been understood, for example in my college we use in the beginning of the course notepad so that the students learn the sintaxis and good practices and they no dependent of a especific tool or Ide (an advantage of this practice is that the student learn to use command tools easily). We want that que student learn programming and not a language or software . This because in our experience the students learn to use a tool but not to resolve a problem and this is bad in a long term.2
-
Things nobody told you when starting to learn a new programming language:
Congratulations! You became a collector. From now on you will collect websites, books and a ton of related software.4 -
Finish my only pet project;
Learn a new compiled language;
Get better at functional programming;
Read more books about networks and software engineering;3 -
Gonna start to learn everything I can about Networking Programming. I’ve always wanted to do stuff that requires it so I’m gonna do it. **Also foreshadowing my next project**7
-
I want to hack central bank website.so I asked my teacher and he told me , go and learn q basic . then I bought programming with qbasic in 21 days....
Fuck that motherfucker teacher -
Did a programming contest today. Can't say I did horrible, but I didn't do very well either.
One thing I did learn though: I prefer contests where I directly compete against other people's code (bot programming contests) over "who can comprehend and type this the fastest" -
Goals for 2018
- Add E2E test or unit tests to my projects
- learn a new (programming language) perhaps Go, or Rust
Better have a few than too many2 -
Angular - object oriented programming
React - functional programming

Now i fucking understand why nextjs does not have any design patterns. No folder structure for it either. Every project is fucking random and you need to learn every fucking project from scratch cause people stuff shit into different folders and file names1 -
1. Finish/start to work on side projects
2. Learn Erlang or something similar
3. Read atleast one book per month (may or may not be related to programming) -
Started my first programming job in 2014 with experience in Linux and PHP. Employer asks shortly after hiring me to learn Oracle Forms 6i. What year is this again? 😂

I would like to learn how to better automate workflows. I find it fascinating that you can control one program with another. Especially GUI apps. I have automated apps before to reduce human error and boring data entry work. It would be amazing to take this to a new level. Perhaps even automate specific programming work.
Machines programming machines would be fascinating as well. -
My dream project is happening right now! Become the ultimate programmer and learn all the programming languages2
-
I have started to learn Python and have ventured to the usual places to try and learn. Udemy, YouTube, Mimo app, and Programming Hub app.
I'm familiar with programming languages like c#, and JavaScript but have never become proficient in any of them. I'm hoping I can change that with Python.
Im looking for anything I can get. Advice, links, books, not sure what else there is. If it will help me learn and hopefully retain the info than I'm all for it.
Cheers15 -
Hey rant. I want to learn new programming language. Now im working with php and js. Any suggestion for new language??4

Things I want to accomplish in 2023:
- learn rust
- learn a functional programming language (elixir probably)
- finish the O'Reilly book about microservices
- learn and contribute to gnunet
- read at least other 2 books about SE
Regarding the last point, I've always underestimated SE books.15 -
Learn more languages (programming and verbal wise), expand my knowledge beyond web technologies and build something with hardware, also get paid more.

Dynamic Programming vs Divide-and-Conquer
👉🏻 https://trekhleb.dev/blog/2018/...
In this article, I’m trying to figure out the difference/similarities between dynamic programming and divide and conquer approaches based on two examples - binary search and minimum edit distance (Levenshtein distance).
The DP concept is still a subject to learn for me, but I hope the article will be helpful for those who are also in the process of learning. -
What programming books do you all recommend?
Language wise any books on C, GoLang, Python, Rust, and LUA are welcome
And topic wise I’m interested in books about computer science theory, network programming, low level programming, and backend programming are welcome.
I know it’s a wide variety of topics but some are stuff Im currently doing, I’ve already messed with and just really want to learn more or focus on, or plan to do it when I get around to it6 -

Hello everyone. I'm new to programming and I would love some tips.
I have been told to learn C# and Java as a way to begin programming, what do you think of this?
If you have any better tips please explain it in a way an amateur can understand.
I hope that I explained my situation well.8 -
Lately I'm getting no motivation to study or learn anything or do anything programming . Idk what happened to me.
Trapped into listening music and thinking to get up and do something but can't.13 -

What fo you think, is it still a good idea to learn fortran in order to learn programming concepts?
I don't know what else would be nice...
I only had experience with shell scripting, which is rather functional.
Other languages i considered were dlang, c#, go and rust.
I have no explict application, which bothers me a lot.3 -

How can we go to a new world?
No need death.
Just read a fantasy book
Or learn new programming language.
For example, if you're a php Dev, learn c#, Java or c++.
Believe me, it's a new world.2 -
Trying to be a minimalist, I've always kept to learning a single programming language for each paradigm or type. Now my boredom (probably mild burnout) is making things get out of hand. I want to learn so many languages.
How many programming languages have you learned so far?16 -
How do you guys learn? As we all know, we have a lot of stuff to learn in our field and it's growing and growing and growing. Other than the programming itself, we also have to learn the other stuff like algorithm designs, programming paradigms, big o notations, git, etc. And if you are working, you also need to learn the business rules your clients might have. And if you're unlucky with your job, your boss might even assign you to tasks with a programming language you have zero knowledge about.
So I was wondering, how do you guys balance your life, your family, your studying and your job? And how do you keep your head from exploding with information?4 -
Finally enrolled in a c# programming course!
I've got somewhat of a knowledge in html and css and was wondering for a long time if I should go Javascript or Php, but got an advice that c# will give me a broader understanding of programming.
Can't wait to learn! :) -

I got my first proper start in programming through a side business operated by the same guy that was running a local makerspace. He had me learn basic git syntax and change some values in ionic.
From there I decided the best way to learn how to do this was write my own project in angular. From there I branched of with React and Vue.2 -

Then I tried to learn Javascript.
F*** it.6 -
So I'm looking into Scala, can someone tell me a good reason to learn Scala? What is the main purpose of this programming language? I have done some research my self, I would like to know what the community thinks though!

I constantly run through situations where I know I've gone thru them before and that I know how to solve them but then... I start encountering issues and it is really frustrating because one minute ago I was convinced that I knew how to do it, that I had gone through the same thing and that it would take long to solve and then I have to spend a lot of precious time on it, and then, I feel like I learned nothing :(
Is it just me? -
any of you has experience with vs code + screen readers? we're trying to find tools for this kid to learn programming, but it's not easy. the screen reader reads punctuation but not {} and she's trying to learn C. also she's having a lot of trouble finding errors in the code, going back and forth, finding the right line.4

Where have you learned "the useful" programming ?
I mean, programming math challenges and this stuff is really fun and makes you think about things differently.
But it's not useful(It very much is, I just mean that the output programs aren't). Where did you learn useful programming ? Like creating GUI apps and stuff like that.3 -

What's the easiest functional programming language for someone with experience with imperative languages?
I would like to learn a functional language to broaden my horizons. I have knowledge of Python and C / C ++ and I want the language to be easy to learn from someone who comes from the imperative realm of languages. I don't care if the language is strong enough. I just need a language to learn the basics of a functional programming language, and then I'll try to find a more complex (and powerful) one.
thank11 -
I had a conversation with a friend.
I : since most modern programming languages handle most of the algorithms like sorting algorithms for arrays / dictionary or finding shortest path algorithms for path location. Do you think it is still important to learn to algorithms and design since most modern programming languages handle those for you.
Friend : Nope, since it’s already available for you why should you care of how they works since they are already embedded in the programming language itself. If you are a computer scientist yes, you must learn those stuff, but if you are an IT graduate or a mere developer you dont need to learn those stuff. That’s why I am confuse in my college days why did we need to learn algorithm and design.
What is your opinion guys? Quite disappointed with his answer.4 -
Is it a good idea to learn two programming languages at the same time? I have a learning schedule created like I learn 2 languages alternatively in a week. For example, Python on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Java on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Is this a right approach to learn a new programming language or practice already learnt programming language? Any suggestions or developers following similar pattern of learning, please share your sample schedule.14

I know this is a recurring question. What language to learn in 2018?
Kotlin, scala, elixir, rust, go, ...?
I need something practical and preferably a language that at least partially supports functional programming patterns. Oh and also I don't want to learn Haskell. Thanks.4 -
Okay, so basically.

My first programming teacher was from a payed course and he was a very good teacher but it just taught me the ABC of programming. How to be a developer and how to develop that's something acquired mainly by self teaching, practice and experience. So that the second course I followed I didn't learn anything new, the teachers were not so good and I they had to learn from me. It was shit. At least it was a free course.

good evening devs,
any suggestions/tips, on how to learn more efficiently, more effectively, more structured?
Recently, after school/work, my discipline to learn is lost a bit..
Because, watching tutorials or reading, while programming the shown, isn't the right thing for me.
I need definitely much more practice , to keep shit in my brain.
Maybe i need ideas? small projects and then make it bigger and bigger?
How do you learn?
Whats your way to practice?1 -

And apart from the high school course and uni it was mostly self-direction that got me to know how to program and code. -
