So this happened last night...
Gf: my favorite bra is not fitting me anymore
Me: get a new one ?
Gf: but it is a C already.
Me: get a c++.
After 5 sec i bursted in laughter, she was confused.24 -
I accidentally washed my headphones along with my clothes last night. One side has lost all bass 😢
On the plus side, they smell amazing.17 -
The moment an other team couldn't deliver for a deadline. CEO came to me, gave me 50 bucks told me to get a pizza and some hash and just work the night and deliver the damn app. So I did. Got a week holiday for free in return. One of the best guys I worked for.42
-
Just heard someone bragging about his one night stand. Whatever mate, I've got two night stands. Either side of my bed.11
-
My grandma saw me programming for one whole day and she started to rant.
Grandma: "She's been sitting all day infront of her computer doing computer stuff! Electricity bill's getting higher!"
Mum: "Well at least she's not out late at night getting drunk and partying!"
Grandma: "Computer girl"8 -
(!Rant) My Programming cave.
A clean environment has always been one of my 'must have' tools for development.
Keeping it clean keeps you calm while busting down on some difficult problems.
And you better believe late night programming marathons are a treat.23 -
100 applications did not do the job. 1 night out did...
After approximately 3 months of endless applications, interviews and rejections i was feeling depressed. One of those nights i went drinking and ended up in a club at 3am...i was tired. I wanted to leave. My gf wanted to stay and tried hard to convince me. As part of that effort, she introduced me to a guy who she claimed to have similar interests with me.....
....4 hours later...I got the job. I am now writing this story from my office...11 -
Guy: you said you were a software developer right?
Me: Yes
Guy: Do you know how to reset my phone?
Me: You do know a reset will wipe out all contacts.
Guy: Yes
Me: What phone do you have?
Guy: iphone
Me: (looks it up on google and shows him it)
Guy: is that a special app?
Me: its google
Guy: oh
I swear this was tuesday night and i was the one out of us that was drinking11 -

When I was a kid I used to play on my old Pentium computer all night after my mother sleeps. One night she caught me playing, she pushed the cabin from the table and broke it 😵. After then I tried to fix it and succeeded. Since then started learning about computers and now a back end engineer..6
-
"alright, let's go to sleep"
*pulls out extension cord from monitors as I do every night*
*hears server buzzing disappearing*
😓
I entirely forgot that I connected my server which is running heavy and lengthy tasks, to that one, as well.
😧😥😬😰21 -
The only thing I hate about being the on call/standby server engineer is that I've got to stay up until midnight.
Right now I'm tired as fuck, just want to go to bed but I'm doing server stuffs because I've got to stay up for more than two more hours 😩
I don't even mind setting an alarm for 3AM to check if there've been any disruptions because I'll fall back asleep like it's nothing but the forcing to stay awake...
Just one more night!12 -
dev1: have you finished the task?
dev2: yep
dev1: why don't you open a PR?
dev2: I'll open one at 17:59. I want to sleep this night3 -
It's 3:30AM and I'm working.
If you work at night, no one can interrupt you.
If you sleep during the day, you can't attend any zoom meetings.
Also, at night you can work naked, and drink on the job without any judgement.
All problems solved.10 -
Goddamn I'm retarded to the next level.
Rebooted my phone a few days ago, some stuff didn't work well anymore and I'm looking for a new one which supports custom roms but I shouldn't spend too much right now so I thought I'd let it go for now.
Rebooted again last night and the network time wouldn't set properly so set it manually. Today I suddenly noticed that any app/page loading through a secure connection wasn't loading at all.
This to the goddamn point that my phone was becoming useless.
Started to search for a quick, cheap replacement supporting custom roms while debugging on and on.
I just (now) looked at the date and BAM, it hit me: I set it to one month earlier.
Mother of god I'm stupid. Brain fart to the max.14 -
Wanted to make a python script that makes a file, deletes it, make another one with incremented title, deletes it and so on.
Fucked something up and ended up with ~20k files before ending the script few seconds later.
Gotta love the ideas you get in the middle of the night4 -
Fuck stupid client.
Sorry:
Boss: client want to white label the solution.
Me: ok. They just need to create A record and send as SSL certificate and I will do it.
Client : here is your SSL certificate.
Me: spend whole night to make the transfer and setup server and check whole solutions one by one for reference to our company.
Next day wake around 2 pm to 100 whatsapp message, call from client and noss.
Turns out client IT team revoked the certificate without informing and the product stop working for all people.
Me: go to back to sleep.6 -
So I have been merging loads of branches lately for our final release and now it’s affecting my dreams.
I sleep with two pillows, judge me I don’t care. One night I woke up screaming “Why won’t this merge?”
Everyone woke up and it took sometime for me to come to my senses. When my family switched on the light I saw one of my pillows partially shoved into my other pillow’s case.
I need a vacation.5 -
Had to do a course on database design a couple of years ago. One exercise was about SQL queries and a bit of theory of databases.
On the night of the submission I got so drunk that I had to use both hands to control the mouse and instead of my solution I uploaded the exercise description.4 -
With the other members of the team refusing to learn git and making changes directly to the staging server i get to write the commit messages for everyone.
Log:
UPDATE: *informative details *
UPDATE: mark made some changes
UPDATE: colin made the same changes as mark but different
UPDATE: andrew undid all colins updates to change one link and I had to add them back in, thank gawd I commit the night before
BUGFIX: andrew keeps changing the database host to localhost and uploading it without changing it back
UPDATE: we all hate andrew15 -

!!rooting while drunk
I got drunk last night and painted my nails. I bought a really pretty shade of purple that should match one of my favorite shirts, and it's my last day at the office today (EVER; lease is up), so dressing up is a great idea, right? I'll feel better and more confident and it'll make everyone miss me.
Except. I was drunk.
And for some reason thought painting them in the dark was a great idea.
Oh, they look horrible!
and apparently I don't own any nail polish remover, so.
Today's going to be the best day ever!
😄😅😢☹22 -
This was during my 3rd semester when I was outside my dorm room finishing my Java assignment. Suddenly this kitty jumped from nowhere and sat near my laptop seeing those buggy Java codes. Then I started to pet him as he sat on my keypad. After this incident, he came outside my dorm room every other night waiting for me to pet him. He was one good friend that I got during that semester. I really miss him now.8

Wrote 800-1200 LOC
It went through code review which was apparently my first code being reviewed
Took me 1 month and more to fix most changes (per day more than 10-12 hrs of effort)..
That 1 month was a nightmare. Every day I thought of giving up programming. I shouted to myself every night why did I never considered these myself. How can I be so dumb.
Half of the reviews I didn't even know how to implement. Didn't even know what to Google.
I consider it as one of my toughest phase as a developer till date.
I still get goosebumps remembering those days.9 -
Just read this in LinkedIn:
XYZ is one of our top star developers, with #speed as maybe her strongest super skill. She develops and ships new features at a rapid pace, at any time of the day (and night)…
This sounds super toxic for some reason. I’m triggered10 -
A few years back we hired a new guy for our sales department. He worked with us for less than a week and seemed pretty normal.
Until one day he came into my office sat reeeeally close to me and actually whispered into my ear: "last night around midnight i was a bit hungry so i got up and fried some sausages".
Then he looked at me with the weirdest grin ever and just sat there for like 15 seconds not moving a muscle.

So I went for a movie last night in one the biggest malls in my city and this is what I found.

Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.
Is this what it's like to be smart?36 -
CHILD: But how can Santa deliver toys to every little boy and girl on his list in one night?
MEH: (laughs) It's quite simple. The items on Santa's list are called blocks, and each block in his "blockchain" typically contains a hash pointer, a timestamp, and transaction data...6 -
Will do a much-security.nl post with answering sent-in questions this weekend.
Please send them to concerns@much-security.nl 😊
Public GPG key can be found at either:
https://much-security.nl/concerns.a... or https://much-security.nl/concerns.h...
Oh and threats (including death threats) aren't much appreciated. They don't really keep me awake at night but if you're one of the people sending them, it's not much fun 😬)17 -
My boss last week backed me up with a client. I was working in a production enviorment and the client refused to test the changes made when I told them. So we things started to go wrong and they called to my boss complaning.
He said:
Well you are right. The things are broken but he (me) stayed last night waiting for your response and you didn't gave one. So he is going to work only in the afternoon and you will have to wait.
I must buy a beer for my boss.2 -
Friend: Hey can you check my code, can't seen to find this one error, and i have been trying for hours now.
Me: Just one error?
Friend: Ya, just one. And it i am not in a hurry, check it whenever you can.
Me: *understanding the pain of not finding that one fucking error*
Cool, just send me the code i ll check it tonight.
Later that night i check the code, debugg that error, shit ton of more error pop up.
Me: Well i have solved the one error, now i can just hand over the rest of the code to the guy so he can take care of the rest, its not like i am responsible or aything. HOWEVER, maybe i can solve few more, just for fun, i can't just let this code get the better of me.
*ends up clearing all the error after a lomg night*4 -

I played a prank on my coworkers. Covered the bottom sensor of the mouse with part of a post-it note. I went home for the night.
The following morning My boss was the only one in at first and spent an hour unplugging and plugging it back in. He was just about to go out to buy another mouse when someone else came in, immediately looked at the bottom, chuckled to himself and took it off.5 -
Had a random dream last night where different JavaScript Frameworks were different flavour ice creams. No matter which one I tried I kept coming back to vanilla...6

So I worked on getting a server ready for about 30 hours last week to be ready for a deploy on Monday Night (last night). Not only did I work on it for 30 hours, we had two other architects and a senior engineer working on it too. We got everything done Friday and it was ready to go with a simple cutover on Monday night.
The only thing left to do was deploy a link change Monday night on the existing landing page. My part was the backend servers and application that had the complicated SSO system and the other part was just a link to get to the SSO. I asked the person responsible for deploying the landing page's link if he was ready about a dozen times. He kept saying he was deploying X (the code name for the project deploy) and that is all he was doing.
Now jump to that night. They have decided that a single landing page wasn't enough and they were going to deploy a full CMS. Well no one knew what the hell was going on and they didn't realize that the landing page was hosted externally on another host. After arguing for two hours they delayed the deployment for multiple days. 24 hours later they are still trying to figure out the CMS on a host.
30 hours and four senior engineer's time wasted to get everything done for the deadline all to be canceled because of on jackass's lack of planning. WTF2 -

It's one of those nights again. It's so hot that I'm constantly sweating my fucking ass off and its near impossible to ventilate here. Fucking irritated for some fucking reason and questioning all my fucking life and work decisions yet again.
I don't fucking need this right now. Have to get up in 6 hours but oh boy is this going to be a long night.14 -
Am I the only one who occasionally gets up from the bed, in the middle of the night, to write down an idea that could potentially fix a bug next morning?4
-
I got a call at 12:30 one night a few months back. Apparently some back-end scripts I edited to fix an automated test setup crashed around 75 test pc's and halted somewhere around 2000 tests. I quickly jumped on, fixed the issue, and got everything back online.
I was up all night certain I would get fired. First thing in the morning the client says welcome to the club some, of the best have done the same thing.2 -
I want to cry.
To start, some of you know that I live in Reunion Island.
But there are a week ago, the SAFE cable is broken (one of the two cables that give us internet access), due to that, my ISP reduced a lot the connection speed.
Yesterday, I downloaded some packages in my Ubuntu computer. I left it download during the night.
So, today I was checking if it was done.
"6 926 kB downloaded in 5h 30m 9s (349 B/s)"
But it isn't the worst. I got a many "timed out" when downloading the dependencies.

It was about 10 at night I thought I was the only one at work. I had my favourite music playlist on, there I was singing and dancing to the music with my headphones on.
With me sitting in a position not seeing the door, my boss and a client walked in and was in hysterics laughing at me 😂2 -

Found this on /r/battlestation last night. I really like to have such neat and nice setup when I can afford in future (I hope). But have one question.
Is it suitable for non-gamers?
I'll be using it for coding, work, movies, etc. I don't think I'll play any game that seriously ever.26 -
While being self employed as a programmer may have its ups and downs, at least no one will judge you(except yourself maybe and your clients if they know) when you code drunk and it's Wednesday night/Thursday morning.6

I simply hope no one bashes my head against the wall for this for this...
I don't like coffee!
There, the words spilled out of my mouth! I simply don't like coffee.
I remember the first time I drank coffee, I was trying to study for finals. A few moments after my lips departed from the cup, I got a really bad headache and stomachache. How do you coffee lovers handle that?
Needless to say, that was simply not a pleasant night for me. I despise coffee and coffee despises me.25 -
A few years ago, we had a developer who would come in early and leave by four almost every day. I can't remember how exactly it started, but we would put up a picture of a different dragon on his cube wall almost every night.
He was a pretty laid back/passive guy, so we took bets on how many pictures there would be on his walls before he took one down.
3 dragon figurines on his cube walls and 11 full color pages later, we had a winner. -
Its such a elating feeling when you implement multithreading perfectly.
I had a task where I read data from one table, searched on it and added the searched data to another table. The table had 0.22 million records.
On single thread it took entire night to do half of the job.
I divided it into 8 thread jobs, and pushed my quadcore to 100% and voila, its done in 2.5Hrs.
Just like Hannibal would have said, "I love it when a plan comes together"5 -
This happened quite sometime ago.
I received a client, reputable university in my country. After all the paper work was done, I was emailed access to one of their AWS server, FTP where the username and password were both admin. I didn't say much to them at that moment.. Maybe they had some precautions?
Over night I received another email, around 3am,
"Hi Uzair, we've monitored a breach while leaving FTP access open."
Well, that was sorta expected.
I received SFTP access to the server the following day,
username: admin,
password: @dmin3 -
This one gave me an idea for a kind of a desktop app launcher that lets you place the applications for procrastination in such a way that they are behind the planet during the day so you are a lot less likely to see the shortcut and want to use them; and likewise for the applications, one uses for work to be hidden during the evening/night cuz no one wants to see that after work.
Not really a particularly strong idea and I'd probably not support it myself if someone else brought it to me but hey, just an opportunity to try coding something different and learn more stuff.8 -
That one client that owns a nightclub. One night of unlimited drinking and 2 days of trying to be alive again.6

My older brother just moved out today. For 18 years I've shared a room with him, and now he's gone. I have a ~30x10 foot room all to myself (it's the entire second floor of my house).
I do love that now I'm able to play music anytime, and with his stuff gone, it'll be less space taken up in general, that type of thing.
I've been in this room with him for over 8 years now, after my oldest brother moved out, and I've always had this feeling that one portion of the room was mine and the other portion was his. Now it's just...weird. I have both portions now. I have this whole big room to maintain myself. I don't have to worry about my stuff conflicting with his for whatever reason.
The past few weeks, when he's talked about moving out, I've always told him that I was looking forward to it, to having the whole room to myself. Now that he's gone, I just...can't. I can't bring myself to move his stuff that he hasn't taken over to the new house yet, or clean his part of the room.
When we were kids we didn't really get along, and I HATED sharing a room with him. But over time, as we grew up, we started to get along better, and for the past couple years, we've always just talked in the middle of the night when we were both awake. And now he's gone (the new house is maybe a 10 minute drive away), and I know he's not coming back. I know that this whole space is mine now.
I'm gonna miss the talks in the middle of the night, and us keeping each other in check (whenever one of us isn't home in the middle of the night we tend to text each other like "bruh where the fuck you at"), and waking up in the middle of the night (when I'm able to actually fall asleep kinda early) to see him playing Skyrim or Fallout. Hell, even coming home from work or wherever to see him passed the fuck out.
I know that I'm gonna have to clean the whole room soon, and that I'll just have to get over it. I've always been the one in my family that doesn't really show emotion very often, unless I get angry, so when people were crying earlier, I just sat there with an emotionless look on my face. But that's also because I wasn't really feeling much at the time, it didn't really hit until I got home and came upstairs to my room. Hell, right now I'm sitting here just expecting to hear his car alarm as he locks his car like I normally hear every night.5 -
Currently in the middle of quarterly planning (its been fun so far). Needs to be signed off by business today.
- My team has ~25 man weeks available in terms of capacity.
- Looking at only priority 0 tasks, last night we calculated the ask from product stands at 64.
- Including P1's, P2's etc. its well over 100 man weeks.
- Email was sent around from business with a list of tasks, asking which can be dropped, de-scoped etc.
Product (non technical) response this morning:
- This one can't take 2 weeks, its not that complicated.
- This one needs to stay, It was originally a Q1 task.
- Can we make this one smaller? (currently only a 3 week task)
- 14 comments on other teams items.
<extreme-sarcasm>
... ah perfect, that cut down the items by less than half. We are now ready for the deadline in 4 hours to have all this signed off on. Great job everyone. Thanks for all the insightful discussions. Go team!

Late night rant
You've been coding until 2 am. The moment you're about to get into bed (one leg already under the duvet) you have an epiphany about the code. Huge interior dilemma revolving around the "what to do now?" question.3 -
Drunken neighbor: Did i piss you?
I: No.
Drunken neighbor: I know i do, but i want a girl. This is my problem.
I: Go find her.

I: It's not the reason.
Drunken neighbor: It is.
I: Reason si you are dirty, drunken pig.
Drunken neighbor: You are racist!
I: Och, sorry, i forgot. You are dirty, drunken, black pig. One more time you will wake us at 3am i'll call ku klux klan on you so my girlfriend can sleep at night. Now fuck off and let us sleep.

So I work in the service desk and the moment and one of our clients use Mac's.
One of the end users called up saying that it was being slow and sluggish.
End user: hi my Mac is being slow.
Me: when did you last reboot it?

Me: are you sure you rebooted it last night?
End user: yes I close the lid every night...

So
I wrote a song
About devRant
Don't judge me
To the tune of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"
dfox and trogus
Had a very good idea
They worked on it
And out popped devRant
Then one foggy Friday night
They published it
It was an instant hit
Devs everywhere rejoyced
Now the devs love them
As they type out their rants
dfox and trogus
You'll go down in dev history!

One night I asked question on SO first time. So next morning, really excited man, want to see my scores. But result was -3 rating! "F**k!" And urgently deleted my question. But SO gave me `Peer pressure` badge, badge for `Delete own post with score of -3 or lower.`... OMG!3 -
Company email sent around last night that 'for security' we need to use the latest software, fine. But we are also told only to develop in Edge as it's the newest and most secure browser, therefore is the only one we can use. There no way I'm using Edge to develop.
Fuck you, Mr Consultant, you've taken the company for a ride.

Night at my girlfriend family... to celebrate both her and her sister birthday...
Offensive comments, jokes and pure irrespect about being a dev, having a beard and being quiet, from the guests.

The only interesting person, her aunt, just left...
Back to stupid jokes and fake laughs.7 -
My study organises a hackathon (12 pm to the next 12 pm so 24 hours total) every year and doesn't allow to bring your own coffee machine. Last year, the teachers machine was used but it's so freaking slow (produces one pot an hour or so) that we could hardly get any. Then, at the early night, it broke down. Everyone was going pretty insane without caffeine for that timespan haha. (Loads of people didn't bring energy drink because 'coffee at location' xD)

So I'm a photocopier technician by day, alcoholic coder by night. Just spent 3 fucking hours trying to diagnose a black line on print outs, checked drums, dev units, toner cartridges, fusing unit, everything...
Called up one of the guys I work with and they said to come back with some samples to try and pin it down...
I turn around to leave and remember I didn't check the transfer belt and lo and behold it isn't cleaning and is smearing the paper...
3 fucking hours to work out such a simple error, I've had program breaking bugs diagnosed and fixed by then... ugh -.- -

One time in a job interview I got asked a very softball question.
"what is the difference between .net framework and .net core?"
"well not much these days. there's a few APIs that didn't get ported over. but even winforms and that are available now. essentially it's the same experience when you're writing c# or whatever"
"ok but like, what's the biggest difference?"
"well the config files are different..."
"yeah but like the main difference?"
"uh... well there's a cli for .net core. it's not tied to visual studio anymore"
"ok. moving on..."
GODDAMMIT JOSH ALL YOU HAD TO SAY WAS CROSS PLATFORM
This interaction still keeps me up at night.6 -
I was once using an app, made by my friend which could be used as a handy reference for programming topics. It crashed every time i clicked the last entry of the list. I told him that the app has a bug, probably some position mistake and he denied, saying that he doesn't need feedback from a guy who didn't code applications. I learned to code java and started android that night and knew I needed to give him a reply, a good one.3

I worked for months staying up till 3am almost every night in order to collaborate with a team on another time zone. No one ever praised me or thanked me or gave me a pat.
Yesterday two members of that team stayed up till 2am once for the first time in their lives to make a release. They got immediately labelled as the most dedicated employees.
Okay, sounds fair.7 -

How do u break production and a testing environment in one night?
One full month preping for same thing that revolves around one config file and assured us he was confident,

I like coding at night, nobody bothers you... Anyway, I'll never forget when I had to write a Huffman compressor(and decompressor) in C for a school project. It was New Year's Eve of 2016, as fireworks were blowing outside the window of my room, I was fixing bugs. Then, around 4am, I fixed all the bugs. I felt exhilarated as I started compressing and decompressing random images on the internet, comparing hashes.
One of the best New Year's Eve ever... Don't look at me like that... I like being weird.3 -
one of my kids has a sleep problem, night terrors.
she wakes up in the middle of the night and just screams and says nonsensical shit.
we live in an apartment and our understanding old pieces of shit neighbors have complained already in the past.
no matter what you do, she'll increase the intensity every minute. you can hug, you can sing, you can ignore, you can try to soothe. She'll still screamcry.
We also have a 8 month old that obviously reacts by crying.
So imagine that, you're there, calmly sleeping, well into your deep sleep, and suddenly a symphony of pain and suffering visits you, and destroys your emotions in a couple of minutes.
I'm not even fully conscious to adjust. It just strikes me really hard.
I think it's a 6 in the scale of mental pain for me.
Anyhow, other people have a higher threshold, this is my experience.6 -
I quit abusive relationship. I quit smoking. I quit vaping salt nicotine, yes, the one that vape bloggers tell you is impossible to quit. I overcame opioid drugs addiction that developed when I recovered after a surgery back in 2015.
My last addiction is sugar. Yesterday night was the night when I ate about 100 grams of it in one take, feeling like I need more and more to take that hunger away. It felt EXACTLY like when I was hitting my 50mg vape literally every 20 seconds no matter the headache and dizziness.
I’m already insulin-resistant. After I’ve eaten all that sugar I felt really thirsty and then it hit me. I don’t want diabetes. I don’t want to inject myself. And I’m already insulin-resistant. It’s not me who crave sugar, it’s my internal animal and it only understands the language of pain and fear of death.
After I quit it, I’m officially a superhuman. Addicted to nothing but self-expression. That’s what I like, that’s who I naturally am.12 -
I think the coolest all-nighter I can remember is when me and one of my best friends were still in school. We were up all night figuring out what to make. At the time we played a little browser click game, so we came up with the idea of creating a bot for it.
We're both PHP developers, but we figured that wouldn't be an appropriate language to write a bot in. So we went for C#. Both of us never worked with it.
At the end of the night we built a fully functioning bot, that could continue playing the game when we were at school. It could do all our manual tasks and could even decode Captchas with the Google OCR package.
That night was productive. -

Is it only me who gets screwed up by such silly little things?
Last night I was working on an Android app. I connect it to a URL. It always threw exception. I scratched my head for one whole hour to find out that Cellular Data was not turned ON on the emulator. 😛1 -
Woke up from my sleep last night because the solution for a long running bug hit me. In a hurry I ran to my work-desk not too far from the bed and flipped open my laptop so hard I broke the screen.
I’ve sent the laptop for repair but my night was so long I didn’t want to get off because previously I only had one problem but then it doubled.2 -
Is it possible to be addicted to coding?
I said I wouldn't program today (or last night) but just spent 2+ hrs adding a function to one of my apps...2 -
We have a 15-machine cluster that went down last night because one machine in the cluster went down. Apparently having a cluster for redundancy is just a nice idea and doesnt actually work in practice.
Also I shouldnt have to go to a vendor's forums to find out the bug that is causing my cluster to go down is fixed in a future version. It should be in the goddamn patch notes!!! -

I just went to another local more expensive cafe (or bar or night club for those who are more pedantic than drunk - or sober for that matter - me). Mainly with the idea of getting a girl that I've caught my eye on home. Which of course miserably failed.
At least I've got her Facebook account. Maybe I'll be able to impress her with my about 600 followers there.. not that that really matters, but it's a number, right.
And I've asked to the bartender there for some dihydrogen monoxide (let that sink in for a minute.. 2 hydrogens, one oxide). The guy didn't know what I was asking for, and didn't quite appreciate it. If only he knew...
I bet he'd be one of those people who'd call the local radio station over the dangerous dihydrogen monoxide that's poisoning the water system 🙃6 -
Late one night I realize that Visual Studio has an update available.
> Might as well. Maybe they finally implemented that auto bug-fixer.
I download the update and it warns me that I must restart my computer. Fair enough, I was just about to shut down my computer anyways.
I turn off my computer for the night.
Boot up the next day, try to open Visual Studio.
It says to me: "No, I mean, you gotta RESTART. Not just re-start, or whatever shit you just did."
Ok. Restarted the machine.8 -
Just stumbled across this gem last night. You guys know how biggest online games site in my country (also backed up by largest ISP) handles reset password requests?
After clicking "Forgot password", it asks you to login to Gmail (cause everyone is assumed to have and use one, right?) and then opens "New Email" window prefilled with some template data which you're expected to finish (in screenshot below).
And I just wanted to play some Ludo with my friends.. 🙄🙈2 -

The British summer results in restless nights and broken sleep filled with nightmares.
One particular dream last night involved my friends messing around with a ouija board and they begin asking in questions. I remain sceptical and tell them to ask it to reveal the solution to the issues I'm having retrofitting a legacy web app with a new design.
The board disconnected itself. Hell had no answer. -
I had to make an account for my kid's school.
Last night I start. I put in a username, then it has a quality meter for the password. I put one in and it goes to like 90%. Ok, fine. I submit and...
Validation error on the username field. Message? [object Object].
Try all different kinds of username: no numbers, all caps, etc. But no luck so I give up.
Today I try again and get stuck again. Then I think... "Maybe the devs suck worse than I think..."
I change the password so that it's rated 100% and submit... Success.

So this phallus decided to make my day a night mare, I coded the Interface in separate class for each distinct services, He just told me to re write it to one class, before he don't understand it.
I wrote documentation, he said it is not professional. and now the fucking codes are containing redundancies.
For instance if he use my method, all he need is call my function once, and call it everywhere. But now the code is messy as fuck, calling the same thing over and over again which can be done by separate it to a function once, and reuse it.4 -
Here's me sitting in the exam thinking all about my code I wrote the previous night. Suddenly brain strikes that I forgot to pass one function somewhere in the code. So I submitted my paper and left to debug the code.

Yes, I have got one to tell. I went to a hackathon where they started the hackathon with a spiritual speech and prayer. They didn't provide any WiFi, food, etc.
There was a canteen in the campus, which got closed in the evening by 7 o clock. The timings were not announced before so we worked whole night with empty stomach. Did I mention one was not allow to go outside the campus during the hackathon? And yes one was not allowed to order food from outside.4 -

Chilled out with one of my non-programmer friends over the weekend. We were talking about various projects I had worked on, and he became interested. He started learning js that night, and I was proud.
Cut to today, he sends me a message complaining about some of the weird syntaxes in python. Super proud moment. -

I just became a supporter of devRant!
I fucking love this place, and feel I've spent enough time here already to make it worthwhile...don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon.
In unrelated news, Markey's CRA for net neutrality just needs one more vote to get started on the next hurdle. Am I the only one who gets extremely nervous the night before an interview as that technical test can encompass the entire academic field of CS. I'm just worried I'll forget the difference between a clustered and non-clustered index or fail to convey the difference between TDD and BDD.
I'm ten years in to my career now, so I 'should' know my stuff. I've produced the tests my self, hired other devs, but I still feel the nerves.8 -
Good morning DevRant community its been awhile since i have posted here, i truly hope everyone has been well :-), last weekend i have spent some time at the International boat show in Darling Harbour, Sydney.

What a day! yesterday i submited a new version of our mobile app and the shit began.
The app was validated during the night (AppStore), when i wake up this morning my inbox was full! Basically every users who updated the app was stuck i tried to figure out whats going on. After few hours our customer service called me to help one of our client who was very angry, the funniest part is that the client recognize me... i was his teacher few years ago...

Write a piece of code that works just fine and it's fairly extensible in 20 minutes.
Then proceed to spend the rest of your night rethinking and replacing said piece of code numerous times, with slightly more elegant code.
7 hours later and I'm still not done. Although a fine way to improve your skills, I seriously need to stop doing that for every single thing I write and start managing my time better. Got lots of other stuff I need to be working on...
Surely I can't be the only one doing this4 -
In the first few months that I took coding seriously, I used to see a feature in some android apps that I really liked and wanted to do. One night in my sleep, I don't know how, but dreamed about it's solution and how to achieve it. So I snapped out of sleep at 2 am and started working on it. I finished it at around 5 am, but I was too exited and happy to go back to sleep, so I kept adding things to it and expanding it until 8 am, when I had to go to work. And at work I had to code until 5 pm, although we had one hour for food and resting. That was the longest I coded!1

Not at my current dev job, but I worked for a place that had us be On-call and if someone called we would all get an email telling us who was complaining, where the site was, the problem, etc.
This service was a 24/7 service.
Anyways one of my first times on call I definitely slept through like 12 emails throughout the night, and when I woke up the next morning I saw that the owner of the company had taken all 12 and resolved the issues.
I thought I was a goner for sure. -
Random story, I was working on a project a few years ago that had a very tight deadline and a lot of code to write. I had been working late in the office most evenings but one night myself and a colleague had stayed later than usual as we got carried away with supporting peripherals in the epos.
The cleaner came in on evenings and we had seen her that night, but had not heard anything for a while so when it came time to leave we figured we best lockup the 2 offices.
After making a quick pass through the building we couldn't see her so proceeded to lock up. Fortunately before setting the alarm we spotted her motorbike in the adjacent car park and decided to have another look.
I'm not quite sure why I decided to look in the tiny supply room/closet but fortunately I did as I found the cleaner standing in this tiny roomplaying games on her phone 😂2 -
Last night by accident I put my phone on coconut paste. (don't ask.)
Although it doesn't show signs of damage, and hopefully it hasn't been damaged, my heart is still not at rest. I had enough panic for one year.

So my school's wifi doesn't support my TV or something, all I know is the wifi doesn't appear as a potential connection for the TV. (Even then, when I plugged the TV into the Ethernet cable, it still gave me an error message.) Well I figured out a loophole Saturday night.
I plug the Ethernet cable into my laptop. Then activate the hotspot on my laptop. Connect to the TV through the laptop's connection. Problem solved.

Me and my friends are having a all nighter coding sesh, because the presention day was near, then my friend's mom ordered some pizza. Just spent an entire night eaning up my codebase...
I optimized some of the functions got rid of unnecessary global variables and changed up the whole file hirearchy so it would be easier to read. After spending all night doing this I went to run the program and for once it seemed everything worked right the first time! However a portion of my application that is supposed to happen at a certain date and time never would run. After spending all night comparing each and every line for what I changed versus my last commit I couldn't find the fallacy in my logic. Everything should still work like it did before. After spending more time looking for bugs I finally realized I didn't break anything when I switched over to this new structure it was the old code that was broken. I went through the old code and after some debugging eventually found the culprit an extra continue statement that prevented my loop from fully executing. Lesson learned sometimes the biggest bugs can spawn from one line of code.4 -
I still hang out with my friends that I have known since we're in elementary school. The whole gang just had dinner and beer at a pub last night. We usually hang out on Friday or Saturday night. Then sometimes on weekends at someone's place cooking meals, playing games etc.
I also hang out with my gf at least one day a week. The activities are *censored*.
Apart from that, the rest of my life is work life.
I won't say my life is very good but I can't say it's terrible. 🤔1 -
I was absolutely angry, my ego had been wounded. I had built the entire product from scratch, while my bosses just clinged onto one feature that i had not done.
It wasn't even going to be used i knew that and hence was slack. It also required a lot of algo writing.
Post the discussion i decided I'm gonna take out my hurt ego's anger on this algo. I drank whole night and coded. Damn fucking one of the most complex logics i had ever written. It was done and tested while the sun rose. And i slept, next day was a Sunday. I couldn't get hungover.

Had to make a change in an ugly codebase. For this I had to change a config value which was duplicated three times in the code base. So I wanted to refactor the code so that the config was in one place.
I worked on this for two days and it was starting to look good. On the third day when I started to work on this I realized that I couldn't start the server anymore. Looking through version control I figure out that my co-worker had stayed till 3am last night to work on the change I was supposed to make.
I had to spend all morning undoing his commits. Once I was done refactoring the actual change took me ten minutes.
Why the fuck would you stay until the middle of the night to work on someone else's task?!
Could have just asked how it was coming along if I wasn't working fast enough for him.2 -

This was a long time ago when I was a pizza delivery guy (summer job). One of my managers could barely handle any pressure. He would often lose it during the dinner rush. He was disorganized and never gave clear directions to his team. One night he totally blew up. He threw a large pizza shovel across the kitchen. It went crashing into the oven in a loud bang. This was in full view of customers on the other side of the counter and several of us workers, all in shock.
It was my last night there as I had handed in my resignation letter two weeks prior. Boy was I glad to get out of there8 -

Seriously I suspect something boiling in Germany... I may just be getting paranoid, but lately I have seen an unusual amount of helicopters above Hamburg even at night. And not rescue helicopters or TV or anything, dark ones with all lights off in the night. That one night I noticed a distant hum in the air and looked outside. I may just have been tired but I thought I saw helicopters with only red lights on in the distance above Hamburg. It sounds impossible, but I even heard gunfire (a rattling popping sound) and saw light stripes in the air which looked like legitimate shots to me (and I played Arma so I know what I am talking about👉). But it was too far away to be sure and honestly I cant believe myself because other people should have noticed. But no lie, there is something going on. Just saw a helicopter again.10 -
I must be getting old. I seem to be the only one confused about 20,000 people successfully paying $60 to buy a digital 3d object from star wars last night. Disney made over a million in 4 seconds.

Spent about six hours writing tests and coding a user log in system for a Rails app last night. Finally finished at around 2:00am. Commited, pushed and merged, then called it a night.
Woke up today and Postgres is refusing to play nice. Spent twenty mins or so fixing that and then ran rspec.... Two thirds of my tests are missing - everything I wrote last night. I check my code and sure enough, they aren't there.
Wild panic ensues for a solid 5 mins before I realise I didn't actually pull the updated master branch after deleting my feature branch last night.
Now I feel like an idiot, but a relieved one. -
I hate leaving work when in the middle of something, I tend to obsess over it all night lamenting that I didn't finish.
Today I was in a similar position but I needed input from our Finance directorate before I could finish. So I sent them an email which would mean that I'd done everything possible and could go home knowing there was nothing more I could do tonight as surely no one would be working this late.
However five minutes later they replied giving me the exact details I needed.
So yet again, I'm going home frustrated.
Why can't they be that useful the rest of the day?!3 -
This is how Scrum works:
Three coworkers are in a Scrum Team. One of them is also the Product Owner and the Scrum Master... I worked for a company that was in entertainment news. Specifically rock music.
On the terrible night of the Battaclan (spelling?) terror attacks in Paris. Few years ago our site was one of the first to run the story (the main attack happened at a rock concert). Anyway the tech debt that we’d been complaining about for months reared it’s head. The site got so much traffic that it was just fucked all night. Literally couldn’t get the databases back up for about 7 straight hours. -

I'm getting to the point where every time I encounter a new bug to fix I die a little inside. So tired of stuff not working and as soon as I get one thing fixed another blows up. Unresolved problems and open loops keep me awake all night. I sometimes want to switch careers but what else is there for me after more than 2 decades of this? I guess I could flip burgers and mow lawns. The burger flippers make about what I made in my last job and the guy who mows my lawn makes twice that much.4

Having a possible new client come in our office and they wanted to see our system. I ask the sales guy what he thin kthey wanted to see.
Day before:

At night is when my creativity starts flowing like a motherfucker. The moment when all the tasks are done for the day and you can start working on your own projects and just lay back and smoke (or drink, whichever you prefer) and zone the fuck out with some good music. Oh and if I've gotten a good work out in that day, then there's no stopping me.
I had no plans to even create an admin panel for my own small project but last night I made one just to make it look professional. After that, I got an idea for a separate project which I started working on. I usually write my ideas down so that I don't get into a complete project cluster fuck with 50 half completed projects, but sometimes you get that golden one that you have to start (currently those are the only two unfinished projects I got). -

Just compleeeetteellyy messed up a technical interview.. stupid theory.. I can apply all that stuff but when I get asked to explain then . Well.. I messed up.
And the coding part, I had the right approach but had one big brainfart in it making the whole thing useless (pseudo code so couldnt test it). I realized just after the interview was finished..
I hate the feeling of failure.
Was a really nice position which is why I applied. Ah well, tonight is whiskey night I guess.8 -
The application that was working fine on local host failed to do one task which is to read users data from excel and save it on mongo db, in some collection document's embedded document. After about a month and a half of lots of interviews with 2 different companys, BOTH of them offered me a job last night.
One is a big digital agency in my country (~2000 employees) the other one is a smaller development firm (~200 employees).
It feels sad to have to deny the smaller one but the bigger one is a dream job for me due to the fact that thet focus a lot more on new tech compared to the smaller one.
But i have never been happier in my life!

Funny how I can go all day not being able to think of anyone that bad, but then when I remember THAT ONE GUY from a group project in college, I can't stop ranting.
highlights:
- He micromanaged our group without adding any value on his end
- Scheduled 2 hour meetings on Friday evenings to show us his work so we could "learn and take notes"
- when the group finally reached out and asked if we could work differently, he completely shut down. like stopped replying and working completely.
- last night we were putting together our presentation, he bailed because he had an 8-HOUR date with someone he just met....nevermind that we had our calendar set a month prior
- prior to that date, he submitted code to our final release that was riddled with bugs, so I stayed up all night debugging and rewriting his parts

There was once some webservice made by a junior over the course of a few months. He always said it's good to go and everything works fine - but nobody ever asked to see something of it.
Big mistake, the thing was a fucking mess. Major spaghetti, nothing _really_ worked. The whole application felt like walking on eggshells.
Fast forward: It's Wednesday at 3PM, and the product is to be presented and used on Thursday at 9AM by the customer. They brought me and another colleague into the project and we fixed it in time, but it was one hell of a night.1 -
Not joining the weekly rant.
But had a haunted dream last night and it was definitely weird.
Dreamed that I was at my childhood house and opened the door of my room. Found literally nothing. Just empty room. Got scared (for whatever reason) and run to my mom. Came back to the room with her. Opened the door. Everything was in it's place; bed, chair, table etc.
I didn't watch any scary movie for the past few months. There was one scary dream few months/weeks ago and I wrote about it. And now this. 🤔1 -
This was more than 15 years ago. We migrated a bunch if data (home to a new server and repurposed the old one, the same night. This was not the first task on that allweekender, so it was around 3am on Sunday, with very little sleep, when I had to copy the data. I did that by logging in as admin and copying with Total Commander. Obviously, even admin did not have the permissions to some folders, so a lot of financial data were lost, as the users found out on Monday morning. We had no backup. Old server was not only reformatted, but the disks were used to build a different raid set. Luckily, one of the users who had access to this data kept a backup on a flash drive. (If you're wondering, I should've used robocopy with backup mode)

Boy oh boy.. Reminds me of good ol college days. I was in my final sem when Amazon came to our university for campus hiring. I was very confident that I will get selected. Funnily enough I went till the final round and I had a feeling that it went well if not excellent. It was a Friday night and we had to wait two excruciating days for the final shortlisted result to come. On the evening of Monday my friend T called me and told me my name is not on the list. I was heartbroken. I asked him who all got selected and he said our friend A did. A was, and still is a good friend of ours and I was happy for him. That night we sat down for drinks and as the night progressed I anguished over my selection. I still remember solving a binary tree problem holding a glass of whiskey in my one hand. The next morning I woke up at 6, detoxed myself with fruit juices and sat in front of my laptop feeling full rage from last night. I sat till lunch and hacked a chrome extension in one sitting. Mind you I had no existing knowledge of extensions at that point of time. I sometimes look how my life has turned since that time and now I am one of the devs in a team which work on a product that itself is a browser extension. :)

Was on call last night. I get a phone call at 3 am that all of our clients projects (including one that was launching at 5 am) was missing libraries (thus causing the sites to not work). I was able to fix all of the errors but one (missing jQuery). Couldn’t figure out how to fix for the life of me. Had to call my boss and wake her up because I forgot I could just download it from the site. Feeling like a failure for something so small.2

Worked all weekend with a couple friends on a side project and it's finally done. A shame I had to pull all the weight and fix my friend's lazy coding.

I am a web developer and assigned in a project as Infrastructure Engineer AND Penetration Tester because no one is available. I survived that hellish experience, i learned clustering and other advance stuff on my own, studying even late at night, no training..just youtube videos. Mine: not listening to early warning sings that shit won't work. As a result we implemented the wrong technology and had to roll back after a month in production. Lost some customers data, though we had backups, so it was just a delta of a day or so. Still, not pretty, had a rough night writing scripts at 3am to check data validity after.
I will throw in another one from a colleague of mine. He was running some database migrations and ended up pointing the DB migration tool to production by accident. Oops. That one required a restore as well, if I remember correctly. -
!RANT
We all have that one colleague who asks for help with his code and when you try and talk about it, he acts like he's got everything figured out.
These guys are so frustrating,if you know it already why'd you call me in the middle of the night to fix an important bug.1 -
Had a bad dream one night that my bosses were going to run me through the ringer on some stuff that I needed to do better.
A day later, exactly that happened.
It would’ve been nice if my premonition could have had a few days gap between dream and reality so I’d have had some time to fix things first. -
Finally, I have a night free of work today. It is the first time this month. I'm so happy to have some time to read and rest.
Life can be insane.
Enjoy the little things in life, because one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.1 -
Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
Got my RC522 RFID reader for a school project last night, got it to work, tried to plug it into my breadboard this morning and shorted it... Double checked on 2 different arduinos and 1RPi 3 B didn't work on either one of them.

#wk6 coolest bug: it was first year CS and we were learning data structures. the assignment was a maze solver using stacks. I couldn't figure out the issue I had and went to sleep. my dream that night was in code (one of a few times it's happened) and I woke up mid-night and typed it in and it worked. slept like a baby after that.

Log 1:
Day 10 of crunch time. I have entered a sleepless zen state. Lord willing, I will be able to get 7 hours of sleep Saturday night. The building is terrifying at night, as there are a lot of noises. Security guards are nice, but curious to see me all alone. Must not show weakness in case they think numbers will give them an advantage over me.
Supplies are low. Only one type of energy drink left in the machine, and coffee gone for the night. My phone is out of fast data so Pandora is spotty at best. I have battery to get me through the night at least.
Tomorrow and Saturday decide the fate of the project. My team lead has not slept in at least 2 days. I feel guilty napping when I do, but she is driven like Ahab so I will let her obsession carry her.
If I am alive tomorrow I will report in.1 -
Worst: Realizing there were crippling and horrible bugs in software that got shipped to customers. Also realizing that we truly don't know the amount of technical debt that contributed to these bugs. My most terrifying comment from a colleague: That software was written on a weekend and the dev was getting 3 hours a sleep a night. One of the bugs I found I was fighting for almost a year to even find what was causing the bug.
Best: Finding those bugs and eradicating them. Having confidence that the bugs we know about are truly dead and gone. Til we meet again...next...3 -
Yesterday I told an intern that was supposed to be shadowing me that he'll need to download visual studios with apache Cordova plugin for multi platform app design. I gave this assignment to him first thing in the morning (around 9:30 am) and told him to head home for the day thinking I was giving the kid a break to download and make sure the build was proper and to play around with it maybe. I check my inbox this morning to find that, alongside numerous expletives, this intern has quit as of 3:40 AM last night. I... I didn't see that one coming.4

Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.
It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -

Last night I had a dream that knowing how to use Kali Linux was one of the requirements for a job I was looking at applying for.
So I was thinking to myself "hey, I know Kali, I should put that on my resume," but I was too lazy to do it right away, and when I did try to add it, my resume wouldn't compile (LaTeX) because one of the brackets was missing, but I couldn't find where the missing bracket was.

I was working for a project with one of the project managers. Despite several discussions, he was not ready to have provisioned for procurement of couple of extra drives for database backups. Also because it's always how they worked, developers were allowed to make changes to the production databases directly.
Since I knew it was going to be burning some day, despite his negligence, I ran a script to take full database backups every night, compress, and remove old backups all to do in the drives we had on server. Sat it automated using scheduler.
One day it happened that one of the junior developers deleted one major table taking whole production down. Next thing you know everyone went crazy. Since I felt bad for the managers and users, I was able to restore database using backup from last night.
You know who jumped in first before senior management to take credit of all this and got some nice kudos..that project manager. Also, you know who got burned..it would not be a rant if I did not got schooled for not following on the wisdom of project manager.
Anyways, we are still not taking database backups (as per project manager) -
Went out for a night of food and drinks and came across one of those little screens/kiosks with what I assume is Windows 10 and TeamViewer running o.o and the credentials open to the public. What makes it even worse is that all the screens in the area I live are connected to the same account. D:

I teach one night a week at a local college. It makes my company look real good having a a developer who also teaches.
Tell me why they would implement a new policy barring me from using my skills outside of work? This only hurts them. Like, do they think I can walk up to the dean and drop the class as if I am a student? Uh, I will literally have to be in violation of this policy for the rest of the semester.

my good idea always get rejected first so badly.
Someday ,i proposed a good idea. after meeting with client he said "yeah we actually working on that by using this and this idea" like he's the one who found it, then he said do that idea of yours.
Then someday, i do split the repository to make things clean in approval of my other boss which is more weird. Then after split it up i got bashed from him infront of other team.
But after critical phase that make me night work. He says "we need to split it up to make this easier". Fuck. If we do it first. We dont need to take night work.

It feels like having awful group project experiences in college is a rite of passage.
I once worked with two other students that had no idea what git was, and outright refused to learn/use it when they could just "email the code." I begrudgingly worked with this, and the night before the assignment was due they both emailed me their work.

- 3 more beers ahora mismo!

Was having problems on a VPN where my URL was constantly redirecting to https, after https was disabled, spent ages reconfiguring nginx, removing and adding nginx again with no luck. We use MDD!! I coined this term one night after getting frustrated and having a lot of drinks. What's that, you ask?
MAGIC DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
It's when you're working on a not-so-recent code base and are afraid to make any changes in fear of breaking things up. You've touched some modules, and now you restrict yourself to work only on those treating all others as a blackbox. Even if something can be achieved by a small change in one of the blackboxes, you still go for multiple changes in the modules you're familiar with! Such is the horror. You start saying that those modules work by some dark magic that nobody understands! -

-Charles M. Schulz
Just found this in a book that's like the analog version of devRant! ^^ -
Today gonna be one of those woozy days.
Could only fall asleep at like 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning. Had serious allergic reaction or itchy disease starting from two palms. No med at home. Could only scratch and endure. And the fucking itch was moving from one body part to another throughout the night.
Went to the morning appointment and now heading office. One cup of coffee and one can of energy drink in me. Might add more juice in me later at office.5 -
Shit!!!!
Worst question I have seen around here.
I only had, at the moment, 3:
The first one was... unsignificant. Never learn anything important/relevant from him.
The second one didn't payed me for three months. I had to quit.
Still waiting for him to pay....... just being ironic his not going to pay.
The third one is bipolar and... well I already had stories shared here...so you can have a look.
I could say that I had another one. Is was my Father... best man in the world. My hereo. Learn the best things with him: Honesty, loyalty and Hardwork.
Sorry from any kind of mistakes on my writting. Long day and long night. -
There is this work from home job, where they recruited me in one day, want a client project ready by next night. Asked for offer letter many times, but not recieved till now. Too many red flags? Or is it just me?8

So there was this project in second year of uni, I was in a team with 2 friends, we had to do a small project to learn programming. I was the most experimented one but still very bad.
One night, I took a few beers and started coding.
I wrote almost all the thing that night, the main functionalities plus the input/output.
But as I was drunk I made some weird decisions:
-naming all the classes in french and all the variables in English
-no tests (who does tests?)
-comments in Spanish
The next morning, when I send the code to my friends (we didn't know about git yet), they started hallucinating. We spent a lot of time refactoring and cleaning.
In the end, as most of the logic was there, we ended up the project a few days before due date and celebrated with more beers 🍺2 -
What kind of stupid hackathon gives solutions in problem statements fucking app dev, web dev solutions one can build in a night....boring
-
So i'm a laravel dev and i love it. However one thing that only seems to happen late at night is when working with Eloquent i always end up putting () when working with relationships.
Last night i spent about 2 hours messing with
public function members(){
return $this->hasManyThrough(
'App\Member', 'App\ConversationMember',
'conversation_id', 'id', 'id'
);
}
only to find out i was calling it via
$conversation->members() instead of $conversation->members
This morning when i opened up the IDE i immediately figured out what i was doing wrong.... sometimes burning the late night oil is counter productive i guess you could say -
Yesterday, I performed an experiment on myself.
I have heard pretty much that a cup of strong black coffee at night keeps you awake the entire night. Newbie here when it comes to staying up all night ( I mean I stay up late but never all night) so I decided to give it a go.
I'm unsure about the results though.
First off, how strong is a strong coffee? One teaspoon coffee per cup? Am I allowed to add a teaspoon of sugar?
Next, I think it kinda also have to do with me. I mean, I have heard it doesn't give me sleep so my personal bias affected it. I wanted it to be true. To be a life hack for that huge ass paper due by tomorrow.
Maybe it does work. At around 4 in the morning I was too tired with the shit I was doing so I decided to finally lay down. I recall this brief moment when I was in my bed all ready to sleep and the sleep wouldn't come. Maybe that's the coffee working. But again, it could just be normal.
Does it not work? If it does, how do I make it work? 😣9 -
Thanks o2 for upgrading my Internet access to your fucking bought in shitty VDSL Solution, only supporting one PPP tunnel at time, you just made my night a bit shorter😠
-
That random moment when you want to just fix that one fucking bug and those issues you've been having on a project but you also want to be a responsible young adult and get an adequate amount of sleep at night for internship tomorrow
-
effin management always commiting something they didnt think through and now the team suffers the consequences of their stupid actions, one of them is that they fucking commited a night of development phase for a major code revision fuck that shit cause that major revision also came for their fucking lack of analysis and mediocre mindset during the requirements gathering phase fuck that

This one night over Christmas break I was drinking with a few friends from the program when I decided to take out my laptop and learn Elixir. I kept saying I need to learn more or I wasn't gonna get a job 👌
-
It's fuckin midnight, after an exhausting day. Instead of working on a company, why don't each one of us just create a blog site, then add some ads, we share our url here and we'll gonna visit each shared url to generate traffic so we can generate revenue.
Oh if only it could work that way. These what if scenarios sometimes coming to my mind at night. Sorry for the interruption, keep scrolling.3 -
Taking a leave for 14 days from work, just to use my vacation days, really messes with my biorhythm :D My day/night cycle shifted about 12 hours.. Programming during the night for a freelance project, sleeping 1-2 hours during the day just to rest my eyes a bit..
I'm from Belgium, but the second developer, on the project, is from San Francisco.. It's quiet nice to have someone to talk to about the development process when every one else I know is asleep.
I'm not made for a dayjob at a desk, I need to be at home, in my bed or at my own desk, choosing my own hours, just.. Working on projects with some music, some snacks,.. Much more productive that way than, instead, being forced to work from 9am to 6pm.. You can't force creativity or inspiration
.
I slept 9 hours this week, spread over 4 days... I'm not the most healthy person, I know :D1 -
Yup
Happens all over the west
One fire they willfully set over and over again creates a predictable snowstorm in June by blotting out the sun causing the temperature at night to dip to freezing19 -
I asked the question already this night, but I suppose most of you didn't read it, so I'll repost it.
I want to learn a lisp-family-language, but since there are plenty of them, I can't decide which one.
Please give me some recommendations. -
Rabbits, who’d have em?
Came home and the wife told me one of the rabbits (Spencer) had been grumpy and unsociable.
Checked on him and he wasn’t being himself, not eating, not moving, repeatedly stretching his back legs etc.
Rabbits are very delicate and not eating is very serious, decided to bite the bullet and we took him to the out of hours vets.
He has high blood sugar, low temperature, and a distended tummy.
They’re keeping him in over night and estimated 7-800 for 12 hours in.2 -
one night I posted " function smoking() * at my office conversation group and everyone stated asking what's that?
And I replied ahh nothing I'm just high, ignore it.
I was dreaming1 -
Why i cannot find partners to form a team to write mvp's and products ? Everyone either look only his company job either is too not-disciplined. I try to find what i am doing wrong in that. I can provide more info about that. Why no one wants to be a free "wizard" negotiating with his own terms (e.g. i want to work at night) and everything now is fitting on companies culture etc.4

A bug on a chef script which stops the web server in case if it was unable to talk with the database. One night the database hits the maximum number of allowed connection and a good number of web servers went down at 3 am.
-
Reverts one file, ruins whole night. Don’t drink and revert. If your feeling sleepy it’s best to pull over and take a nap. Reverting while tired is irresponsible.2
-
Ugh, have an assignment due and just spend the last 2 hours looking for a bug that caused blocking code in one of socket threads.
Looks like it's going to be a long night -
Finally got some time on my holiday to do some side project work! Turns out it was a looong time since I started this computer.
So what I believed to be one lovely night of coding turned out to be one looong night of software updating...
I'm soon off to bed. Fingers crossed that I'll get some more time to do actual coding soon. -
I hate it when I fuck up an update and don't realize it until the next morning.
Did an update last night. Had a large amount of bugs that I had to fix. Some caused by me not testing all the way, some caused by some other guys doing maintenance last night and me not knowing about it.
Woke up to a text from my boss asking if I even tested the program last night. Yeah, I just made sure it loaded after the nightmare amount of bugs I had. I just missed a portion of the program. So I fixed the portion of the program and then he asked me to roll the program back and try again tonight.
What makes this even better is I was really hoping for this to go smoothly. I'm also doing another program release and its going really fucking badly too, security is fucking the shit out of me. My peer review is Monday. I haven't gotten a raise in a year and a half since I started at this company and I was going to ask for one. But this kind of dashes my confidence on the rocks.4 -
that moment when you got just one night to prepare app for arduino based robot with pattern recognition. No hardware component with me and whole thing goes on asumption
f**k competition -
I feel like i have changed after years of working as a dev.
Granted i have only worked at one place. But still, back in university i swear i could just code all night. Finishing a project to submit by the end of week out of joy. There wasnt even money as a reward, only a good grade which matters very little.
Now i can barely get up in the morning. Man, growing up sucks. Or maybe im at the wrong place. Idk. Too tired to even think of it.1 -
So I was out at night with some friends and one of them mentioned her fast ultrabook got slower with the windows updates (Win8->Win8.1). I asked what was her daily tasks to get a base usage.
Me: maybe you should try Linux.
Her: oh yeah, I've heard of that.4 -
Last night on uyouthe’s weird dreams:
- I gave an interview about my ex and why she died
- my other ex got involved in huge marketing campaign of a new laser surgery by receiving said surgery but they somehow completely evaporate her pelvic and hip bones with laser. I saw her body after that happened
- I somehow live in 2003 Netherlands and work for some scientific lab as a frontend developer. All that ie and ancient JavaScript shit but I like that, processes and culture are flawless
- many other weird shit regarding self-driving vehicles being a mainstream and me owning one, my grandma turning evil and send swat to take me down, also I met a lot of hipsters at defcon and I don’t know why are they there
All that in one dream. Amazing. -
Concurrency tip Nº 1
Hate your exes that know you too well but cherish the ones that didn't stay around enough for it. Most of all, favor one night stands2 -
Hah. I was cleaning my screenshot folder and saw the bitbucket dying one night. It was after midnight and was in 'the zone'.
But still i love them :)1 -
Whatever Windows 10 update that ran on my labtop last night has it slower than fuckety fucking fucked up glacial icebergs. Just a heads up to anybody who doesn't wish to wait for five minutes, go do some chores, only to return to the room to discover the connection timed out. If you can prevent this update from kicking in for a few days until they work the bugs out, do. I perish the thought of millions of devs weeping into their bevvies as projects stall, customers become stroppy, and whole nations crumble... and the fucking screen still hasn't defaulted to the next one!2

When you spend 16-20 hours a day in front of a computer you have to keep things fresh.
Got some of these
https://a.co/d/0u8FvIy
to go with this
https://a.co/d/6ludmps
after using this for 10 years
https://a.co/d/0PDxmxL
and the experience is night and day. Just having lit keys has improved my life drastically.
I also got one of these to mix up my day
https://a.co/d/icAfaET
and one of these to try to improve my 3d workflow
https://a.co/d/ebd9b5A
but I'm not convinced yet.16 -
Anyone tried those youtube subliminal sounds videos to achieve wealth/love/or whatever? Or any kind of hypnosis videos that put you in trance that changes your subconscious to make you think differently and according to those goals you want to achieve?
Im about to listen to hypnosis of falling out of love/getting detached from the person i love. hoping it will help me cut out all the bullshit and uncertainty i get from her so i can focus on training self improvement and work
So far i found this one https://youtu.be/OJHtMLGWq6o
Anyone tried this one? Or knows a better one that you tried and it worked? Send link
I'll listen to this one every single night and fall asleep with it and see what happens13 -
So I had this Case tools lab during my 5th semester of college and they asked everyone to do a project. Me hoping that they will see the project and appreciate the work, did a good one and I spent day and night on it. Then came the finals. The fucking teacher who was asked to evaluate me didn't even open my project properly and just entered the marks just seeing the home page. It was that fucking day that I hated my college so much. Now I don't spend too much time on projects for my college. Worst Dev experience!

SAD END😭😭
The world of cinema is in mourning as the actor Jason Statham, who plays Frank Martin in the film "the transporter" was shot in his home in New York by thieves who broke into his home.
He wanted to stand against them to protect his family but the thugs were right about him.
He was shot 4 bullets one in the head three in the chest 😭
This all happened around 2:18 am in a movie I watched last night.
SAD END🙄🤫8 -
What would be the one thing you can get it right or do it another way if you can go back to this morning. If its just morning there, last night?2
