My girlfriend is amazing:
After a long uphill battle trying to finish a huge open source project I started months ago. She noticed I was getting a little deflated.
So she donated a small amount to the donation page to lift my spirits.
She wanted to do it secretly but didn't know that it wasnt anonymous.
The little things spur us on.40 -
My grandma saw me programming for one whole day and she started to rant.
Grandma: "She's been sitting all day infront of her computer doing computer stuff! Electricity bill's getting higher!"
Mum: "Well at least she's not out late at night getting drunk and partying!"
Grandma: "Computer girl"8 -
Was writing a first product for my best friend and my first company/startup. (that one is on hold now by the way).
Spent about a month doing a full-time internship and also programming after that the entire day. Weekends full of programming as well and after a few weeks I noticed that when turning around/walking quickly, I lost my balance.
Went to the doctor who immediately asked if I worked loads and loads to which I answered yes.
He took a look at my daily patterns in general and then told me that I was having a thing which you were only supposed to get at old age and that I was heading towards a burnout because my body was highly not used to/ready for this.
Continued for a little and people started asking why I looked so white (my face lost color) and unhealthy.
Started to take care of myself and voilà, within weeks I was getting better :)6 -
I wrote (or, ended up with a very much alpha but usable version) a monitoring system a while back and completely forgot about its existence.
But, it's still running and a few days ago I was building a docker imagine on a system with not that many resources and after about 5 minutes I started getting notifications about a high load!
Then, while I had forgotten about it again, yesterday, I suddenly started getting notifications about websites on my main application server going down.
Logged in and all was good again after restarting nginx.
Gotta say that it feels quite awesome to be notified of shit going wrong by something I wrote myself while I forgot about its existence 😊2 -
My girlfriend dumped me after I named my project after her and started getting attached to the Project. She thought I was double dating....😂3
-
So guys i really need your help. My girlfriend started getting phone calls at odd hours, so I got suspicious and started tracking her phone. Then I found out that she has been going to this guys house at wears hours, then once when I was tracking her my computer froze, so what could it be? How do I fix my computer14

Hi! After getting generally good responses to my videos, i decided to give something back to the community and make this video that briefly explains basically everything you need to get started as a programmer. If you or any friend or relative wanted to get into the field, send them this video.

Tanking World of Warcraft raids. I had severe depression and low self worth. I played the game all the time to cope. I decided to get good at tanking because I heard it was a challenge. I ended up getting fairly decent, started tanking raids and people would ask me on more and more raids saying I was a great tank.
This gave my self confidence a boost and I figured if I could do that (which everyone said was hard) I could get good at coding (which everyone also said was hard.)
Stopped playing wow, started coding all the time. Today I earn very, very decent money as a software dev. (and I don't have depression anymore)
Thanks World of Warcraft.12 -
I could be wrong, but I believe all devs love a clear section saying
"Getting Started" to any form of documentation5 -
Had an unannounced performance/progress review at work today.
I always get nervous when having those but I know my boss and lead support engineer by now so i got to relaxed mode quite fast.
Then i was getting very cold and started to shake (in combo with the slight nervousness).
That lead to extensive stuttering 😬
Apparently I put my chair right under a fucking ceiling fan thingy in my nervousness.
😅2 -
Started this machine for the first time after 18 years!!
IBM R51 (32 bit single core Pentium M), 1gb RAM, 40gb old mechanical hdd.
Installed Ubuntu 12 (32 bit from old iso) , installed some educational software to teach mouse n keyboard (my daughter is good in touchscreen on ipad), she is getting hang of mouse so quick, amazed how fast kids learn, wish I could be so fast too.14 -

2017 Recap + DEVBANNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
1. So, let's recap my 2017 first. It was awesome
Here is some list that I can remember
- finding my hobby (fsx, vatsim)
- finding computers aren't genius
- creating a new language
- major improvements in my unity skills
- found out i am friendly
- getting a job at google in a dream
- creating my banner in krita --> devbanner collab :D
- Logo creation fail
- CS class apply fail
- getting free stickers for the first time of my life
- getting death threats (lol)
- finishing my first ever big c# project
- got offensive words from a bot that i am a f***ing d***head.
- getting downvotes after creating such a shitty meme
- getting my rant featured in twitter
- finding that my friends love my game
- getting a sneak peak at the src of devrant
- coding with turbo c
- not using git cuz too lazy
- finds out msdn is god
- slowly hating unity, but likes it cuz it is using c#
- reaching level 2 in google foobar
- started 100+ projects this year and finished about 6 of them.
- devRant motivated me a lot
2. devBanner stuffs
So, how it all started is when I wanted to create my own logo. Some people will remember it. The one with arrows and cozyplales written on it. Then, I created my own banner with Krita (their text tool sucked). After that, due to some suggestions by the community, I decided to create a collab. From then, many people contributed to the devBanner project. Special thanks to @Kimmax for his awesome prototype of the frontend made during I was sleeping.
Now, before I talk more, I want to talk something. I don't post a rant about my collab cuz i want to get upvotes. I just want more people to use this simple creation software. You can literally use them anywhere, and it is FOSS.
Well....
If you want to create again, you can do so at https://devbanner.center
If you want to contribute, please do so by visiting https://github.com/devBanner
We are looking for a skilled frontend dev who can do the basic web stuffs. (we don't use frameworks currently for our frontend)
---------------------
Thanks everyone for making 2017 awesome. Can't wait to welcome 2018. Happy new year everyone, and I will drop my banner here.21 -
Just started learning python and here is my experience so far
I had started programming with C++ but since I wanted to venture into the fullstack domain (upto some extent, circumstances played a major role), I switched to java and boy was I in love with it.. Spring boot was my life and I had written several applications on it currently running on production.. One of them was crawling tweets and getting some insights out of them.. Today when I started with python, I found a tutorial (link at the end of the post) that almost did the same thing..
Within 2-3 hours and some very basic lines of codes I could achieve exactly what java would have taken at least a week to do.. Python for sure is a good thing..
Probably I am still in my very adolescent stage of learning, but python does seem a very good option worth considering.. Though for now, I would stick to java for writing useful code..

I once explained to my teacher that i had trouble getting started with programming after a longer break and wondered if he had any smart ways to get into programming again. He smiled and explained that:
"There are no great ways to get into programming, the trick is to never really get out of it".
Best tip I've ever gotten.1 -
Started my new internship for the summer.
"Hey, our client's prestashop is getting really slow, could you please do something about it ?"
I go poke around to see what i can do, and after some research i see the problem. The search bar was taking 20-60s to load what was sometimes 16 objects.
The client was using a prestashop with the default search engine. 175000 products were registered. NO WONDER IT'S FUCKIN SLOW.
So on my first day of internship i entirely re-coded prestashop's product search function. I feel like this is not internship level stuff.5 -
Junior dude in my team: Started working with the expectation to get dirty and go deep into technology (he was in fact a mathematician). The first two months he was happy like a little puppy playing around. Then suddenly he started talking about getting more responsibilities and beeing more a manager than a dev (because development is too stressful). Then on his last day of the probation period he quit out of nowhere because he got a job offer from a place he really wanted to go. He bought one beer per person in my team, but haven't invited my boss to that event. We suddenly realize why: He talked real shit about him!
What a dick!4 -
After working for 5 years after getting my bachelor's, I have moved country and started work on a Master's.
Nothing is more humbling in CompSci than realising the depth of what you /don't/ know. Imposter syndrome, anybody?2 -
Early in my database developer career, I started a new job at a mortgage company. I was poking around the code, just getting familiar with things.
One script identified properties in certain states/territories for special handling:
AND STATECD IN (‘PR’, ‘HI’, ‘AL’)
I thought “Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and ALABAMA?? One of these things is not like the other…”
Yeah, that was supposed to be Alaska (AK)… But they’ve been special-handling properties in Alabama for years. -
The day I discovered Schrödinger's lesser known paradox of simultaneously being fired and not fired.
This isn't really much of a dev story, but I figured I'd share it anyway.
About two minutes into signing into all my stuff, I suddenly was kicked out of everything. I tried logging in a few more times, and then suddenly started getting the error, "Your account has been disabled for security reasons." I couldn't sign into chat, and co-workers confirmed that I was missing from the company directory. My manager didn't come in for another two hours, and we couldn't get anyone else to answer what the hell was going on. So I was kinda panicking.
Eventually, we found out from one of our coordinators that someone else with the same name as me was leaving the company, and they had deactivated the wrong person.
It ended up getting a lot better. They told me that it could take up to 48 hours to restore my access (it took longer), so I found stuff to do so I could maintain my paycheck. One of those things was assisting someone with data collection and processing, where I eventually said, "Dude, I could totally automate this," and now that's what I'm getting paid to do.1 -
One year for Christmas, my dad got me an old tower and installed Windows 98 on it. He also got two old-school PCI WiFi cards so that my "new" computer could access the Internet via his.
I started learning basic web development. I would convince my mom (an English teacher) to buy me books on programming all the time when she was getting her own books at the store.
Eventually, I got a book on Blitz Basic and started making my own video games.
Then GameMaker, Java, C/C++, and more web development and design happened until all the sudden, out of nowhere, I'm a computer scientist 😁
It's crazy how much we owe to our parents. And neither us nor them even realized what they were doing at the time!1 -
HR meeting about flex time. They rounded up the entire engineering department for an all hands meeting.
Started off "we're not here to single anyone out, and no one's getting fired", and then proceeded to shower an employee, lets call them G with praise because they worked late the one day they brought in an investor.
The rest of the meeting was a guilt trip for the entire group. Great use of company time. /s1 -
I started a hobby software project producing TV graphics for eSports racing events.
At first it really only was a hobby without getting paid at all. After a few years we got our first customer for whom we build a fully functional TV graphics package for their broadcasting network for about 350€ for roughly 80-100 hours of work total.
This was the first time I was getting paid for my own software and since it was just a hobby, it was nice at that time.
After a few more years in the business, we are lucky enough that our software is used by the game developers themselves and big car companies for their eSports events and we are able to make a decent profit from our small hobby.
Took only about 5 years. So never give up, I guess. :)9 -
OMG ever since I started to love Haskell, all nonfunctional languages look ugly, I am getting worse at writing procedural code!3
-
Inappropriate experience at work? Here is another one:
The IS department manager 'John' bought a drone (when they first started getting popular, paid over $400 for it), flew it around the office, which was kinda fun, then he took it outside and started peeking in (and recording video) various VPs offices.
Needless to say, that behavior wasn't popular because several/most have their back to the window and never saw the drone and the drone was close enough to see/record their monitors (which John did). No one was doing anything wrong (no porn, no secret company plans, etc), but they were rightfully upset.
Later that day he decided to find out how high he could go and because of the technology at the time, it lost signal or battery power, fell from the sky, and before he could gain control, it crashed (styrofoam wings shattered). Can't say I felt sorry for him.5 -
I recently started working with CI/CD in gitlab. I don't know why I had such a hard time getting it to work. I left it hanging for another day. Yesterday, before I went to sleep, I merged to master branch. On waking up I can't explain my happiness when I saw my pipeline... 😀6

My son is into playing Roblox. He asked me to help him find an auto clicker that doesn't have viruses/malware. We looked into cheatengine (which I have used in the past), but despite getting it from a legit source it is getting flagged as malware. So we started writing one with Python. I did check to see what their policy on bots is:
"Using bots that are programmed to run disruptive, large-scale tasks"
is the only text I can find about bots. It seems like they don't care if you make bots to automate tasks or play the game.
I plan on having some fun with this and including a little gui to control the bot while the game runs in the background (the goal). I had tried to get my son to have an interest in programming so this is a good intro.11 -
We work with about 7 developers at this company with 80 somewhat websites in production.
We edit changes directly trough FTP and we use ctrl+z as version control...
(yes since i started working here I've been demanding git, I'm spearheading it and we are getting there slowly)4 -
After working for this company for only a couple years, I was tasked with designing and implementing the entire system for credit card encryption and storage and token management. I got it done, got it working, spent all day Sunday updating our system and updating the encryption on our existing data, then released it.
It wasn't long into Monday before we started getting calls from our clients not being able to void or credit payments once they had processed. Looking through the logs, I found the problem was tokens were getting crossed between companies, resulting in the wrong companies getting the wrong tokens. I was terrified. Fortunately I had including safe guards tying each token to a specific company, so they were not able to process the wrong cards. We fixed it that night.1 -
Was office SharePoint bitch at one point. This guy wanted me to build a workflow for him that would enforce insane checks on his (peer) colleagues. Asked if his manager approved and obviously they hadn't. So this guy started telling me he would build his own application from scratch and host it on his home server if I didn't help him. Pointing out the business might object to their confidential data being put on his home server didn't put him off. Getting laid off a few months later for gross incompetence did however.3

Lads, this DDoS attack on DYN is must be getting pretty bad, the Department of Homeland security just launched an emergency investigation into the source and apparently Amazon has started being interrupted22

Today, I planned on getting started with something different.
I've been thinking of learning some new stuff in Java, which I'm totally unfamiliar with.
So, I thought of creating a widget for devRant.
It is basically a small web browser which only opens up devRant.8 -
Thank God the week 233 rants are over - was getting sick of elitist internet losers.
The worst security bug I saw was when I first started work as a dev in Angular almost year ago. Despite the code being a couple of years old, the links to the data on firebase had 0 rules concerning user access, all data basically publicly available, the API keys were uploaded on GitHub, and even the auth guard didn't work. A proper mess that still gives me the night spooks to this day.3 -

I'm a long time Unity3D C# programmer and i mostly build android games for fun. About half a year ago i dumped windows for Debian Linux(fucking love it) but I quickly started to miss my unity3d environment. Unity in a VM doesn't work and the outdated, beta, crash prone linux version doesn't support android so i started looking for an alternative.
I decided to give Godot a shot but moving from a statistically typed language to a dynamically typed one literally breaks my brain. The last couple of hours of reading the documentation pretty much consisted of: WHAT? YOU CAN'T DO THAT! NO. WHAT? WTF IS THAT SYNTAX? oh I think I'm getting it WHAT DO YOU MEAN POINTERS DON'T EXIST!?22 -
So I started getting email notifications telling me about transactions made using my credit card. But I DON'T have a credit card in the first place.
Instead of trying to call customer care and pressing an endless array of buttons, I drive to the bank. I tell them the situation and they check every database they have but they couldn't find any trace of a card connected to my account. Turns out their database somehow had cross-links in their database.
How does the one of the biggest banks in the country possibly have such an issue. Worst part is that it's been a day and they still haven't fixed it -_-7 -
While getting a pro in Kotlin, I started using
when(condition) {
true -> doOneThing()
false -> {
xyz = whatEver()
blaBla()
}
}
instead of simple if-else.
It looks nice but also distracting.
What is your opinion on that?
I guess most will be like:6 -
> My company started posting things on LinkedIn. That's cool.
> My company started asking us to like and share said LinkedIn posts. Okay.
> Since I'm already on I decided to update my LinkedIn profile following some advice I've seen and including some key words. Coolio.
>> Now I keep getting recruiters wanting to be added to my network 🙄 not cool.
I've seen so many posts about recruiters being annoying on LinkedIn and never understood until now. I think I'm going to go back to having a crappy profile so these people don't find me7 -
For the first time in my life windows 10 repair fixed the PC?
Was getting bluscreen regarding unmountable boot, memory management then try to open it now it started diagnosing your PC.
Started reading devrant it fixed the problem and it works now.5 -
At work the other day...
Guy: "Oh hey I was thinking if you could help me with an application to visualize some data."
Me: "Ooookay...what did you have in mind?"
Guy: "I think we have XML files that could be turned into graphs...oh and we could add some trend lines. (Getting more excited) And maybe we could supplement it with live data...oh hey and maybe we could add real time alerts via email..."
Me: *thinks to self...there is no way in hell I am starting to work on something that he is literally coming up with requirements as he's talking* "I need specifics...so go take some time, think it through and get back to me with concrete details and examples."
Guy: "Ok. That should be enough to get you started for now at least."
That would be a big fuck no, good sir. Haven't started and won't start it. He has never mentioned it to me again since then.4 -
Working on my Google Foo Bar level 4 challenge.
9 days past figuring out how to solve this problem..
And finally reached on a working solution. When started compiling my solution.
And then i Find out, the fucking Google tool is facing some bug and not allowing compilation. Tried hard to do everything but still getting errors...
And after searching on Google just found I'm fucked up.. It's on Google's end and they are not fixing it since so many days..
Just 5 days left to complete.. And i have no idea what should i do...
4 month work just fucked up9 -
So, I was getting started with express middlewares and installed Postman. I saw this. I literally cracked up laughing so hard at this.7
-
Thought I was getting a handle on this whole programming thing....started reading The Art of Computer Programming by Knuth....feel deeply ashamed of my knowledge (or lack of)...superiority complex increasing with every page.3
-
How is anyone supposed to compete with those kinds of numbers?
I thought the industry was struggling to find people?
Looked at a dozen other jobs just like it.
How are you supposed to stand out at all, if you're just getting started?17 -
Another chapter in the life of a novice programmer:
I work a lot with PHP and Laravel, but I feel I'm ready for different challenges. I spent all of last week searching online and getting advice on what language I should focus on next. My two first options were Java and C... So naturally I ended up choosing Python :P
At least I'm certain now and already started studying and wow, I think I made the right choice!3 -
Gonna make a pull request for Project!
"How to Project:
npm install
npm test
npm run start"
npm install: warning, warning, deprecation, warning
npm test: 30 tests, 15 failed
npm run start: error, C stack trace
Pull request status: on hold3 -
What I hate most about myself is getting a great idea for a project, getting started on it, becoming distracted by other things, forgetting about the project, and having no idea what was going on when I come back to it months later.2
-
In the pandemic era i have become allergic to delivery fees. Fucking $5 to get pizza delivered? Fuck you I'll take the 15 minutes it takes to go down to the damn restaurant! Pisses me off sometimes.
Maybe it's because i enjoy getting out more since I've started working from home, but tbh i don't even care, because paying $11 to have someone else bring your groceries to you just makes me irate.14 -
I started out learning Python. And before you "tsk, kids these days", it was before Python became the go to starter language for a lot of universities. No, I started learning around age 12.
My dad (a programmer himself), bought "Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner" and we went through it together. He started out holding my hand as I went through the exercises, but pretty quick I was getting through them mostly on my own.
It was really fun, and I'm absolutely going to do the same if/when I have children of my own. The books exercises were all games, which made it really fun. Instead of "hello world", the first program printed "game over". I was super proud of the hangman game I eventually wrote.
It gave me a leg up when I started taking actual classes, and really instilled a love of coding and puzzle solving in me that propelled me through two degrees.2 -
At the end of each day, work out exactly what you need to do next, and then...
...don't do it. Seriously. Make a note of it, save it, then walk away. Then you know *exactly* what you're getting started with the next day, and by the time you've done that you're in the swing of things. (Especially helpful if you're not a morning person like me. Much, much easier to get started if you know exactly what you're doing.) -
Started to clean up my projects and delete all my deprecated things and starting to shift focus to one - three projects at max...
Buying my first car (2005 VW golf 2L diesel)
Got a new job interview that they seem eager to meet me about...
Getting money under my belt and closer to buying a house....
Everythings coming up Alex :-D
(Knock on wood) -
Why is it that the internet is full of fucking "getting started" and "crashcourse" and "essentails" bullshit, but when you're looking for some truly deep stuff like all the ins & outs of MacOS native app devevlopment using SwiftUI, there's NOTHING!
For fuck's sake. People really only demand superficial fake knowledge and don't require depth at all?!!11 -
In a getting started tutorial about Haskell:
"You probably already have haskell installed because you tried to learn it once and failed"
He's so right...1 -
I have COVID. I started getting symptoms last Sunday.
I close on the house on the 5th of July.
We have a moving pod scheduled to arrive at our apartment on the 5th and were planning on leaving to start making the move the 7th.
I have no energy.
This timing sucks.17 -
UGHH AMANDA, I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PILATES SESSION OR WHETHER YOU HAD MORNING COFFEE.
CAN WE SKIP THE SMALL TALK AND FUCKING GET THIS MEETING STARTED ALREADY?
ok fine, I won't be getting much done today (as usual), but that doesn't mean I HAVE TIME TO DEDICATE LISTENING TO YOUR BULLSHIT.7 -
-Discovers new tech

-Spends hours to get the example project working

Resigned from a job I got before my last semester of Masters where I worked almost two years. Boss started acting bad at the end and my work was really stressful.
Now I don't have a job and running out of money.
Have a job interview next week where I have a slight chance of getting it. Hope ai get it!4 -
Favourite API.
That's a hard one.
I guess it's a toss up between Salesforce APis and Cloudflare.
Both are straight forward and work within minutes of getting started, and both are well documented to the point, you only need a basic understanding of what you are doing or trying to manipulate to get it up and running.
If only AWS could do the same 😅1 -
A rant about people in general:
I am sick of people not caring, not giving a fuck, not valuing others.
Studying CS this is something I noticed the past year: people tend to not acknowledge that there are other human beings around them.
Some are just focused on getting their degree done and dusted as fast as possible, which is fine.
Some are working to pay the rent or student loans, which is fine.
Others just do their thing, code their stuff, criticize other's code... which is also fine.
But nobody's realizing they're interacting with other people! Other living, feeling human beings. For them it's just about getting it done.
And not just at university.
I've started seeing it everywhere.
At the job I'm working, people in the shops and on the streets.
I don't get it. We are all human on this rocky sphere in space. Why do so many not care for each other?
It makes me sad.3 -
Being smart but not applying yourself is the same as being stupid.
I've been having a rough semester , as I sat around and played video games for the first few weeks.
Ever since I stopped gaming I started doing more code stuff, and getting things done.
In hindsight, I probably shouldve stopped gaming when the semester started.
What are your guys experience with this? What stratergies do you use for time management?11 -
About starting your career at a medium-bigger company that's well-established, versus starting at a smaller company.
That's my point of view:
It's always wiser to begin at a company that's more established (you will also be sure that you will get paid on time). I started at a well-established company, and I managed to buy gear, travel, do stuff, and then I realised that I wanna do more, not only live to work 😎.
Smaller companies are kinda risky, think of it, their goal is to reach the level of a well-established company, which is some levels lower than that. On the other hand, if you do well at a smaller company, your next goal will be to work for a bigger company, which will surely be nicer, more professional and will pay better. So you will have managed to et there with all the skills in your pocket already, which will come in handy later!
Bigger companies are excellent if you have a family (wife and kids), they provide stability, that's the most important thing, but I believe that in order to get "settled" in a company like that, you should at least have tried something else first, like doing your own thing or get challenged in more complicated gigs that require you to up your skills.
In the end, it's all sun and fun, with you code editor by your side 😉. I'm interested to see your opinions.1 -
Hey guys, Been a while...
Quick status update
Moved out of my parent's house
Now a lead backend engineer at a crypto exchange.
Getting offers from startups without even applying, just referrals
Still underpaid by global standards but very comfortable locally.
1year+ of financial stability
Lots of motivation from the lovely people here when I started out, I'm grateful1 -
Analyzing code from stack overflow until i get it, before i use it.
that way you can pick up lots of useful features about a language or deepen your understanding for a topic, especially when you're just getting started.3 -
One of my colleagues tried upgrading his Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10... he had multiple issues getting the installer to run but got past it after a couple of hours troubleshooting.
He left for lunch when it got to 81% installed, and got back an hour later to find "Something Happened" proudly displaying on-screen.
He clicked 'okay' and it just started rolling back to Windows 7 with no explanation as to what happened, or even any error codes!
Thanks Windows!
As helpful as always!5 -
I was struggling to make advancements in my task because I was so oriented by the "more code means more work done"... I wasn't producing at all. Now that I grabbed a notebook and a pen and started to think things through, things are finally rolling. Sometimes it's 90% thinking and 10% coding. In addition to that, I can't even write spagetti code after getting a solid concept written in pen. I just hate that I spend so much time thinking until something good comes up. But hey now it's rollinnnnnn.undefined pen productivity less is more notebook efficient implementations mean more puzzles work smart not hard4

Dear game developers of mobile games,
Please stop making EVERY FUCKING GAME dependent on having coins AND gems that you have to pay REAL MONEY for to oftentimes even keep playing! Or worse still you are kept at a basic level if you refuse to spend!
It’s boring, annoying, and your game is not worth spending like $100 on before getting bored and moving on.
And don’t get me started on ads!!
FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!16 -
Literally painful dev learning experience: Do your damn stretches and invest in a good chair.
Spent a couple of months of WFH working eight hours a day in an awful chair and started getting back pain out of the blue. Part of my first paycheck after that went into a decent office chair, in hindsight I should've spent more on it but goddamn what a relief it was not having to spend an entire day in the tiny, back-breaking piece of shit my landlord calls a desk chair.1 -
I moved about a month ago, the new place has crap curtains (yay for renting 😔) so I was waking up at 5-6am as the sun comes up 😞.
I bought blinds a couple of weeks ago, they've just arrived and all screwed on. I was waking up and getting bored so I started going out running before work. My last job I was the absolute last one in the building every day, yet also the closest. Now, with the running I'm getting in at about the same time but one of the first in my new job.
My new blinds are remote controlled/programmable. It's a bit sad but totally worth it, I'll be able to sleep in, have sunlight waking me up and still get to work at a sensible time, kinda just gives me more time in the day! 😁1 -
Because I own http://grnail.co.uk and http://hotrnail.co.uk (which I bought to prevent scammers having access to them), I often get emails about peoples' accounts. I could do a password reset and own these accounts, but of course, I don't.
However, today I started getting passport scans and personal details from Syria...2 -
It feels like Friday.... but it's only Thursday..... Yep... long week.... and it's just getting started....4
-
I spent ALL of friday trying to get some code to work (some awful MS Analytic Server stuff). I usually finish at 6pm. I was getting very frustrated, as it's for a project that I've made some big promises on.
So at 5:30, I started throwing random ideas at it.
At 5:58, it worked.
My weekend has been a lot more relaxed than it otherwise might have been. Weirdly, this has been the second time in a month that I've got something working with minutes to spare on a Friday.1 -
Been trying to learn code for almost two years now, started with C++, took a break because I couldn't figure out what to do with the knowledge, started Python 'cause I thought I'd be inspired by scripting and automating stuff, same thing happened, switched to java, same problem, aaaaaand I'm back to C++ and still can't figure out what the fuck I can do, I don't code anything and I'm tired of following tutorial in the hope of getting something interesting done
Long rant I know but fuck I'm so depressed about that...8 -
TLDR I messed up my partitions!
I had on old netbook with Windows on it, it was getting painfully slow. So I thought, why not try dual boot?
Since I had never installed a GNU/Linux OS before, I messed up the partition. Like, really, really badly.
Somehow, i accidentally created like a 100 1kb partitions. Windows wouldn't boot, no other OS was present. Shit had started to hit the fan.
Turns out there was this easeUS partition manager, that you could make a bootable USB with it. So I did that, deleted all partitions, created new one, installed Linux Mint on it. I've done a lot of other shit like this, but this rant is getting too damn long. -
I was 33 and it was 1996 when I decided I was interested in programming. I really enjoyed it and made decent money. Things have been rough the last 3 years in regard to my career. I went from being a top performer to getting bad performance reviews and getting let go from jobs. I have started my own business but it is not making a profit yet. I write good reliable but I am slow because I test and try to write clean code. I have also tried to avoid working with a couple of hot js frameworks because I find javascript frameworks annoying. My husband says it is time to do something else like becoming a project manager. I might get my pmp but continue to work on my side project. I love programming but have some major disappointments lately.2

Ranting after many light years (oops that's a unit of distance)
Damn Damn Damn.
There is complex workflow engine, and the only thing I know is once you fix and get success response from method A(), call method B().
After 2 days and nights effort, method A() is fixed and I am getting success response.
Now, when I pass this response to B()
One data is missing and hence failing.
Where the hell is that data getting kicked out...
I am in a dead end. I don't even know where to look.
Pinged engineers for help but all in vain till now.
Working on one of world's largest system, and I am miserable in debugging with this system.
And the worst part is there is nothing that I can turn off and on so that it works.
(Don't blame me. I am not that dumb. I just started using it since 3 days)2 -
I started working for a startup around 2 years ago, I literally helped them survive in covid, I worked my ass off for them. (I was getting good money so no complain there) but now after 2 years I started looking for better opportunities and finally found one but now the old company guy is not letting me go they have froze my experience letter, not accepting resignation letter not even giving me my salary slips and since with all this frustration I stopped working 2 months ago and now I got blocked form every possible way to contact them.8

Just started getting LinkedIn messages from colleagues. I've just completed 6 years in the org that I joined as a fresher.. WHAT HAVE I DONE!??!
-
I start shaking and getting nervous when there is something I really, really want to say.
Today in school we started talking about Amazon Alexa and privacy.
This topic concerns me a lot and I started talking in front of the whole class about Google and things they do to spy on you. After about 30 seconds of me talking I started shaking because there was so much I wanted to say and with so much enthusiasm and also a bit of anger.13 -
Okay, can we just all agree to stop making YABSS? (Yet Another Bootstrap Standard Site)
Yes, Bootstrap can be used for nice things, if you actually dig into it and tweak it, but please don't just copy/paste a fucking getting started template!
FFS! Stop it!6 -
I’ve been out of steady work for almost 2 whole months now but things are starting to look up...
I’m super stoked for some potential client projects!!! I have one client that wants me to completely rebuild their businesses infrastructure, PC refresh, server upgrade, network overhaul for 3 sites, and more. This new client has a business partner with another side business and wants to discuss potential work/projects. And I’m going to be discussing a potential contract deal on Thursday to develop a custom software for another client.
Guys! My startup is starting woot!!!3 -
I started getting into .net core.
I am researching VB.NET as well as C# even though I already know C#.
And I am using a light theme.6 -
Today I am proud,
because I kept going.
I didn’t give up,
because I needed to reach it.
My finger moved fast,
tapped so fast and I felt it closing in.
So close… oh so close.
It was getting hot.
My vision started to blur,
and yet I could not stop.
I hit the key one more time,
and found my bloody command.5 -
Fuck Google Chrome cache.
For almost an hour, sat and tried to make changes to a react UI but unfortunately nothing's changing. Started to worry and doubt myself.
Even thought of getting myself the yellow duck! But fuck no , little did I realise that Chrome "intelligently" fetched my page from cache even though I was using incognito! Had to re-open the browser to realise that.
How did I find out you ask? I thought why not fucking open the same page in Mozilla . Why? Because why not?! But I still can't believe that I wasted a whole fucking hour due to that piece of shit called cache!19 -
I got a little jaded at work (the normal officer politics stuff), so I started doing less work, and reaching out to recruiters.
My boss noticed I was having a go, reached out and offered a raise and a new computer. I told him I'd have to research market value for the raise.
In the mean time I got an offer for 50% more than what I'm making now. I'm heading to him today with my research in writing. Either way I'm getting that raise!7 -
My colleague was once writing a test which deletes a file. And due to some fuck-up all the files in the C drive started getting deleted. By the time we found out half the files went missing and most programs stopped working. Had to secretly patch everything back up with me to ensure that he finishes his work and IT or management doesn't find out.
-
I haven't had a smart phone in a while now. So I just started using one again. I am getting upsold for an app to "protect me from dangerous calls/texts" on my service. Really? You want to charge me more money for overpriced bandwidth to protect me from YOUR service? This is like aftermarketing a seatbelt on a car.
At least Microsoft has the decency of providing basic security/virus protection for their flagship product. -
So I have been getting a lot of spam at work for various crap. Some conference attendee bullcrap, and other fake vendors, etc.
Someone pointed out to me that a lot of spam comes from China. So if you reply to the spam with topics the people of China are not supposed to see then they filter you out of the spam network.
Now I started replying to the most prolific spam with this as a link:
"1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I will let you know if this helps reduce or increase my spam.6 -
A rant from git,
Why do developers always PUSH and PULL me around. I mean they don't just do it once or twice. No they COMMIT to doing it over and over. I try to REBUILD myself, but it is hard getting pushed and pulled constantly. I don't know the ORIGIN of where it started, but gosh I wish the bullying never started! -
Y'all know when you first hear about interrupts? Maybe on an arduino or something when you're just getting started and learning?
Yea after suffering enough trying to get ISRs running on an x86 just to get keyboard input going, I can safely and securely confirm it's all going downhill.
I love you all.8 -
Spending hours trying to figure out why the stack just won't work with SSL. Nearly lost my mind as we started feeling dumber than ever. I really started to doubt my skills after it did not even work with the most minimal nginx site config I could imagine.
The next day I discovered that we missed the 443 port mapping in the docker-compose file...it only had port 80 mapped.
Yup, stepping back from a problem and getting some sleep is really worth it sometimes. -
Be me, get a consultant job, go to a supposedly great client that has fame of getting scouted by Google. (attn: I doubted all this shit before I started)
Learn the basics by a awesome mentor and trial/error stuff at the same time to get the hang of things, after that was done, I noticed there was no documentation whatsoever, code is spaghetti and your documentation, good luck!
Royal spaghetti, you can't make heads or tails of it, dev code in production, empty try/catch blocks, empty statements, if (true)... (incl. their core classes)
Keep in mind this is a multi milion dollar company...
Someone please understand my pain...6 -
Devs! Heard about this thing called going to sleep without dreaming about ways to fix a bug?
Whenever I force myself to sleep whenever I get stuck on a bug or confused about the implementation of a feature and started dreaming about the approaches I can take. Most of the time I wake up around 2 or 3 am to try out an idea I had and most of the time it works.
Now I fear this is becoming a habit. Is it something I worry about or ignore since my problem is getting solved?8 -
Could anyone link me to a good tutorial on getting started with bitcoin..? I would look myself, but there are a lot of different ways, and I'm not sure what's a good way, and what's a bad way.. Or, if anyone would like to give me a quick rundown, that would be great, too!
I'm looking to stockpile bitcoins overtime and let them sit, like a savings account. (Currentally have a little over $13 USD to spend (Paypal))
Process must not require a phone number!
Process must support Paypal~!
Thanks in advance,
April.2 -
Which language do you hate the most, and why?
Mine is Java, maybe because I've been learning about it since I started to learn programming on class.. getting tired and bored since I met Js and Python10 -
I commute to work on bike and it started raining right before the time I usually go home. I decided to wait for the weather to calm a bit. That was 4 hours ago. It's still raining, but it's also getting dark now..8

I'm considering getting to learn to use Linux, however, I have No idea what distribution I should start out with, any recommendations? If you know a good tutorial to getting started, feel free to post :)23

Started with some inspiration for making a 2d MMORPG.
These are how i make the world generator:
Decide you want to generate paths/roads.
Realize you need pathfinding function.
Realize you totally forgot how astar pathfinding works.
Search for implementation.
End up getting bored and implement other cool feature instead.
I literally made a bunch of stuff before writing a 20 or so lines long astar cause its boring. -
I would like to have more time to work on the old, lonely, dust gathering site I started to build. There was a lot of new skills I wanted to test and train. But my personal life is getting stressful in the last time. Wife broke her leg and my son started in kindergarten.
I'm starting a new job in Dec, so I quit my current job. I had to reduce my work hours to collect my son from kindergarten. Sounds like I have much time now? Nope, there somehow is few time for programming. I enjoy bouldering (thats where the leg thing happend 🙄) and that's where even more of my time goes.
I see my project become ugly in the meantime, because there are even more new things I read about and would like to use... -
At 11 pm tonight, someone from my friends group made a sudden plan of travelling 60 kms away from the city at 12 midnight. They were getting hyped up so I matched their energy and said Yes I'll go.
They all said they're going to their house and get ready and meet up in half hour at 11:30 pm.
I didn't go to my home since I was already good to go so I stayed in my building's lobby.
At 11:30 pm my head started spinning and I canceled on them and came back home, because in that half hour break they were all at their homes, I got some rest and my body took that as an indicator of being ready to go to sleep.
I can't even pull a half-nighter now, I'm getting old......sigh.2 -
PC just crashed midgame amd started to bootloop afterwards... i guess my 1070 is not so stable :/ not even getting video signal anymore..3

Good news: I've finally started learning Golang! I've wanted to do it for a while, and now I am!
Bad news: I'm getting screwed by a GTK messagedialog that when open for the second time, simply panics! The dialog is in Glade because I've got no patience to master the art of giving 5 different flags (maybe that's just 'cause it's 3 AM). Plus, I'm have a similar issue with my about dialog! COME ON!!!!
P.s. just wanna say hi again, haven't been around in a long while, so: Hi!6 -
Taking over development of a system from some other guy who just straight up dropped it with zero documentation. The code looks like he wrote it after watching some getting started tutorial. There is no structure. Some methods and statements are just empty. And he spelt 'connection' three different ways in the same file.
God help me...1 -
There have been many occasions over the years.
The first was playing with a Sinqlair zx80 and getting it to print 0 instrad if syntax error ;)
The latest probably was when I started to understand react.js. -
Tldr: what are some tips you wish you got when you started programming?
Hey so. I got added to a facebook group with absolute beginners to programming. Been tryna answer their questions but its getting overwhelming and i thought id make a definitive guide to beginners or something like that. I have a buncha topics and tips but the more the better, so please if you got some advice you wish you got x years ago, post it down here.5 -
Im off of 3 hours sleep right now after getting lost down the rabbit hole of debugging.
I was just putting stock on the shelves at my job and a customer came up to me and asked me where something was. I thought of two places it could be so i said:
"if item == aisle4
{print("You've found it"); }
else if item == aisle6
{print("You've found it"); }
else
{print ("Im unsure where it is sorry"); }"
She just looked at me and my coworker told her where the item was, once she left my coworker started laughing at me and called me the biggest nerd he knew.1 -
WTF is going on with twitter?!
- Yesterday I've Installed the app and tried to signup
- I've entered my birthday
- Entered phone number
- Wait for SMS...no SMS
- Tap resend...no SMS
- Wait half an hour...no SMS
- Tried few times...Started getting error: This number cannot be registered..
- Today I've tried again
- Phone number accepted
- Wait for SMS...no SMS
- Tried adding my number to a friend's twitter account...Received SMS code..
- Tried again signing up with my phone number, got error: This number cannot be registered..
- Tried from web, getting error: You reached your SMS limit try again in 24h...
How can I reach my f***** limit when I haven't even received a mail!
I've been trying to signup to twitter for 2 f**** days now with no luck, wtf is happening? it's a major social network for f*** sake.
And what's worse there is no way to send support mail, their "Contact US" page only has options for existing users..8 -
My friend started giving me advice without me even asking. She didn't listen why I chose to do something but kept on saying it's a wrong decision and why I will regret.
I asked to some people in my network and they agreed with me.
During the conversation with my friend, I felt very furious ans once tried to stop her calmly but she didn't listen, in the end I hung up by saying that I'll talk to her later and ended the conversation without getting into shitty conversation.8 -
Started getting into drawing to get it all out, thought some of you might find this humorous, given our strange nature.
Same rules apply as other social media. If this upsets you, insert a tampon and jog on.14 -
If you want a really awesome overview of Vue
(I got fucking sucked into using it for my current work)
then theres no better starter article than this one:

Really solid material, take a look if you're just getting started.8 -
I started getting more into the product management side of the business lately, which involved being invited to what feels like 80 meetings per week.
My schedule today consisted of 5:30 of meetings, three of which were a single API design kickoff…
I’m starting to get why people are so damn mad at meetings all the time. Should’ve been a fucking email chain3 -
Someone please kill me.
I'm sick of myself.
A few days ago in the prize distribution for a past coding contest, I denied my prize and eventually accepted after fucking around a bit.
Now since two days, I'm straight forward wasting my time. My grades are going down exponentially and I'm involving neither in CUDA (which a started just a while ago) nor I'm getting into studies and even getting in competitive coding.... Fuck me!!!!!! -
I'm trying to learn Dart and Flutter, so I started with the Getting Started materials.
1) Downloaded JetBeans
2) JetBeans refused to use my existing Android SDK so it downloads its own
3) JetBeans still doesn't work so I switched to Android Studio
4) Android Studio can't find an SDK and it crashes while downloading the SDK
5) Now Unity can't find an Android SDK
-,- come on.1 -
Yesterday my friend called me programming Jesus for getting her code to work properly
She's started learning python. All I did was fix the indentation issues and explain that whitespace is finicky in python and send her a couple of article links about it. pretty boring of an issue
I'm kinda bored I wish someone had a more substantial issue for me to look at and have to actually learn something new to fix it
Considering finding a project on github to try and contribute to as a side project when I need a brake from my projects. But as a worse-than-mediocre college coder I'm intimidated to even try5 -
Yay finally summer started
Ye no fuck that
After being "migrated" into a newer smaller office and getting another team member we are now three people on about 5 square meters of space.
Another good thing is that we don't have an air conditioning unit in the new room and gained a few more PCs.
Oh and did I mention that we are on the sunny side of the building now.
Basically we are working in Satan's Asshole now. Good thing is that I am working on a thermometer now.
35 degrees Celsius is still alright isn't it?
Oh and our fan broke today.3 -
Started my summer internship at a company working on their codebase about two weeks ago. I expected a lot of differences from school, but not this much. I still have no clue what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I'm getting stuff done, and it's helping out, but I still have no idea what is going on.
Oh, also, we use outdated Javascript frameworks... I don't actually know Javascript yet but we're just gonna roll with it2 -
Prediction:
Windows 11 will be forced on Windows 10 users through similar tactics as Windows 10 was forced on users.
I started looking at how to prevent this. The wording from some tech support people seemed to indicate this.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...
The response seems like, "oh yeah, some will be forced, like home users."
Don't trust these MS assholes at all.
I am thinking of getting a third drive and installing SteamOS. See if it is "really" an option for some games.27 -
So.... My mom became a victim of cyber bullying. And i just feel sad for her. She is an old but smart lady in her 50s and not very used to modern tech and cyber crime.
We follow a (now dead) philosopher (say 'X') as religion, some random stranger came in their local fb group and started shit posting about X like " he is not a god , he is a thief, follow me , bla bla bla" stuff like that..
I don't give 1 qbit to that shitposter or that fight. I am just concerned that my mom (and many others) got so disturbed that she left the work and came home.
Internet is great , free and all, but as long as everyone is allowed to speak everything without caring for a consequence, simpleminded people will keep on getting hurt, evil shitposters will keep on getting fame and people with an unsure mind will keep on making wrong decisions
I can give you numerous examples where a person got the power and fame just because he keep on getting famous for his negetive posts, religious or otherwise. This has to stop, but am not sure how.15 -
It's been 5 years this month since I started learning programming, getting interested after learning about Linux, wanting to do operating systems and games.
I started with C++, went on to C and assembly language for about 2 years and gave up on it for the most part.
Afterward did Java for two years and hated every second of it! Switched to Python instead (been using it since 2.7.5).
Now I do Haskell and JavaScript and those languages do everything so much easier I can never see myself ever going back!2 -
Docker.
Even the getting started tutorial didn't worked correctly. It basicly ask you to run commands and fails to execute. I also banged my head to wall few times while trying to connect my dockerized application to database container.12 -
I started using dvorak ~2 months ago and I’m getting better and better, but I was still using qwerty for french. But today, I discovered bépo... bye bye short term productivity2

I'm getting started on web development again. But I want to get the right tools for the job. I don't hate Dreamweaver. But I know there's got to be something better out there for me to use.15

How do you ask a co worker about their salary? Heard from one of our new hires that he asked for considerably more than what I started at, but I'm not sure if he was referring to his base salary or total value of compensation. It would boost my confidence considerably if I knew what I could be asking for. Hell even getting that as a starting would be quite a step up.18

alert("Really bad english here");
I need to study.
I want to study.
But I can't.
I am 16 year old and I am in school. When I'm not studying for tests, I am programming something. I'm not finding time to do anything else. Just getting stressed.
Anyone in here started coding early too?
How do you separate time for school and for coding?8 -
I'd probably get laughed at for even mentioning "php"..
But what is the best framwork for getting started with PHP to build some complex site?
I have seen some here talking good about either codeignitor or laravel. Not sure.17 -
Went through a lot of GitHub repositories and other people's codes to try to understand how the "magic" happens. Slowly started getting a hang of it. Good thing being, I picked up good coding practices along the way
-
I've used ngrok since it's earlier days when it was free to use. Now it's hard to use ngrok for certain use cases. And it is very slow for parallel calls. So I started working on my own ngrok implementation from scratch using QUIC as the communication protocol between the exposed server and the tunneling client. The project is very new as the QUIC library I'm using is not that mature, yet I'm getting good results. It is very easy to setup. Would love to know if you guys had any thoughts. https://github.com/aki237/qxpose1

I’m running 1.5km every day for two weeks already. Anxiety still strikes sometimes. Depression is measurably better, but it was getting better months ago when I started taking fluvoxamine, so I can’t attribute this to running alone.
Running will help me in another way though: my mental health will definitely be going through the roof when I look in the mirror and see the beautiful, albeit scarred, slender body I posessed before it all started.8 -
Yesterday, I started taking the new programming classes in my school. I am utterly disappointed, before even teaching my classmates who are new to programming some basic python or javascript, the teacher started the class with teaching arduino and C and because of that many of my friends have since dropped the class and we are only 3 left out of an original 20.
Although some of you might say that arduino is a good introduction to programming, I believe you should teach a kid basic python or java before getting into arduino or raspi..etc11 -
Because of my personal life my career life is failing. My Girlfriend getting married to a "null pointer" by next month and I can't concentrate on any of my stuff. I have started a startup recently I am scared of losing it.2

I have homework for tomorrow, so when i get home i say to myself "right, let's get this homework bs over with". What really happens is i sit down at my pc, power on my VM and keep on tweaking and improving my simple python browser. A few hours later it's already 9PM and i havn't started with my homework. So, it's now 10:30PM and I'm writing a pressentation about traveling and browsing devRant at the same time.
Not getting a lot done. I guess homework isn't my thing....2 -
I'm getting started with Go (so cool so far!) and I'm trying to interact with Tumblr API using their Go Client...

What IDE to use on Ubuntu?
Hey guys, just recently started getting into Ubuntu & Linux, and I need some recommendations for a good IDE (or just an editor). I want to program C, C++ as main priorities, but want an IDE that isn't locked to only one language :) Been looking at Sublime Text, and while it looks cool and easy to use, I'd prefer something that didn't require a license..
Hope you guys can help out, any help is appreciated :)20 -
Our company got bought over from a global private entity 3 months back (advent international) and the reciew process started and it turns out, im part of the bunch that may be getting retrenched as per the meeting we just had, our positions being redundant and just last week had a over the top performance review.. Now i need to figure out what to tell the family when i get home. This Fucking sucks im not going to lie2

Now i think Microsoft just want to use the win 10 users as testers.
After getting anniversary update windows started showing application not responding message for the FUCKING WINDOWS itself .
like if The OS itself is not responding shouldn't it just show BSOD rather than freezing?
Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to go into recovery mode without the shift+restart , it just wasted a WHOLE DAY .
And my laptop(lenovo Z50-70) has pretty common hardware.
I learned my lesson and deferred Updates But for Some versions of windows That's not even an option.6 -
When I first started getting interest in server side programming, I remember I felt like god with all those possibilities!

Getting started with MEAN stack(finally) after lot of thinking (and a year of android dev). Wish me luck and provide your inputs about my decision.8

After disliking all the region based ads YouTube has been providing, I have now started getting ads of French products.
I fee like I've been played.4 -

Customer: I literally don't want to do anything make it work.
Support: here is a good video tutorial to get you started
Customer: I don't want to invest anytime in getting anything to work, just make it work.
Arrrrrggggg just use another service2 -
Going to be taking my first certification test soon! It's the HTML5 Web Application development fundamentals MTA if you were wondering and im getting it for free so I've started refreshing and studying! Next I'm going for the Software development fundamentals C# and VB!2

As a fan of C#, I'll be entering the world of web development with ASP.NET, but there are so many things to learn before getting started! Javascript, bootstrap, css grid stuff, angular vs react things, docker, microservices, http and REST stuff, accessing some remote thing through ssh. I feel so intimated and don't know where to start!14
-
I keep getting interest for my freelance services and then people totally ghost me. This time I got all the way to “Send me your contract to sign and we’ll get started.” Several followup emails later and no response. I wish there were a way to know this outcome before I ever waste time on the back and forth.5

Ended friday on a really good note. Started monday on a complete shit note. Why does team communication have to be so fucking difficult? Oh so you want this like this even though you told me this and now I've spent 3 hours getting drained doing this? Fuck this. Also FUCK SAP, any company who uses that shit should be taxed as if they were established in a ultra communist hell (or utopia depending on your beliefs) until they implement something decent.2
-
I just started on a Laravel project for a customer. Damn I’ve got a hate/love relationship with that thing.
I fucking love how fucking fast development is it in, even for fairly complex tasks, amazing.
I fucking hate how goddamn fucking slow development is when you get an error, as that shit is near impossible to debug, and you keep getting weird exceptions that you just need to know what means. -
Rant against me:
I am a fucking moron for not getting to docker soon enough. Should have started udied it and built dev environments (at the least) for years.
I think it was another user here is that recommend some tutorials heyheni...I should have listened to you sooner bro13 -
I think instead of being lazy today and sleeping in until 3, I'm gonna spend my Sunday morning early afternoon learning something new or building something short and sweet. Not sure what I wanna go after though! I started getting into openCV but I'm not good enough quite yet for it to be somewhat enjoyable. I am a swiss army knife so I work a lot of stuff but I'm open to anything.6

Omg I loath path separators. Been working on windows most of the time (bought a surface pro for some reason) and my colleagues work on Linux. We just do standard web dev stuff nothing special but. I started having issues with my windows build getting weird function.prototype.bind.apply is not a constructor issue. Which is valid because apparently my colleagues started using the fat arrow function everywhere and on places where not needed.......
But on Linux they never had an issue because babel fixed it to the old function during the transpileee. So why the fuck am I getting this problem. After some tedious debugging and asking my colleagues. (colleagues only responded with just use Linux) I found the the issue to lie in the webpack loader for the Javascript in which the path regex used a single / :(. So I changed that to a group to be / or // and bam the whole bloody project works on windows now.
....... My colleagues still don't understand that they over use the fat arrow in the wrong places unfortunately3 -
A few years back I was still using a CRT screen and I used to degauss it quite often as a result of having my speakers right next to it. Nowadays I use an LED screen but now I started getting this kind of "degaussing" effect where my vision shakes and waves and I get it quite randomly when looking at lights of different frequencies. (Like the Sun and my phone's screen) It only lasts like 2 seconds at most but I'm wondering if someone has the same problem as me and I would be quite interested to know if this has been caused by the CRT screen or something else.3
-
So I bought a new phone, I was super excited getting it, I even got to open it at work with my colleagues watching. It was really nice, the S8 is an attractive phone... Until it started crashing very very regularly. I want to go back to my old phone, that's how bad it is. Turns out this is a common experience, how can this be at the top of all the review lists if it has this problem? Is the assumption that you are going to install stock android as soon as you get it? Or is someone paying for reviews?4

I’ve been ill and injured a lot over the last 8 months or so, and i also quit smoking 2 months ago so I’ve put on a bit of extra padding.
I need to loose weight as I’m getting married in August and I want my suit to fit.
Anyway I’ve started eating a little bit healthier, and I’m gradually getting back into exercise (taking it slowly as don’t want to re-injur myself, and need to get my body used to it again)
This has presented 2 problems, the first is that after a run I smell like a tramps ball bag, and the second is I’m impatient and can’t do the sort of training that I used to do.
But, onwards and upwards, and even with no exercise I can still run 2 miles non stop in less than 20 minutes, not going to win any awards but not too bad all things considered.1 -
I work as android dev for the past year and a half, this week in my startup I started doing some backend (it consists of microservices, codebase is written in python. were using rabbitmq for queuing and for http our framework is falcon).
At first I was very adamant to learn new stuff but now that Im getting deeeper into backend I started to really enjoy it!
Its still lots of new information but at the same time it feels soo refreshing to have two experienced mentors who can guide you, since Ive spent last year and half working on android completely by myself and relying only on myself. Also im very lucky that codebase is clean. -
Back in my classic asp days, I used to average 12 hour work days with a few 16 hour days as the deadline drew near. No pills, just caffeine, junk food and cigarettes.
I'm sure the way I behaved in my 20's has cost me a decade of my life.
The worst was an 19 hour stretch, but I started getting confused and puking so I slept for 3 hours before finishing and then presenting.
I'm just glad those days are behind me.
I think I'm way more productive and healthy now at just 8 hours a day. -
So I decided to have some funzies over the weekend. Started XCOM 2. Built a team for a mission, spent an hour customising. Then I spent 3 hours going through and not failing miserably even once. The last fucking part of the mission, my favourite sniper dies after getting hammered in the face with a fucking laser beam. Then I lose control of the battlefield and everyone dies. Start again because I'm NOT gonna lose my awesome sniper!
This game is like designing software, planning deployment strategies, and disaster recovery at the same time. Recommended for all devs!6 -
Writing simple driver for AT24C256 eeprom on pico (RP2040)
It turned out it was FT24C256A, which should follow same protocol.
After literally over month of coming back to it, getting stuck again, rewriting things (including some functions of pico-sdk), i almost gave up a d started just yolo trying random shit.
Afterall the documentation on addressing the chip fucking missled me -_- (1st bit is r/w flag and 2-7 bits are address, counted from MSB->LSB)
I made it work yesterday.
In meantime Ive rewritten Wire library, Ive modified someone's else rewrite, extended sdk to allow getting i2c registers, tried to use tiny go just to learn it doesnt support i2c slave mode, resoldered entire thing few times, measured connections few too many times etc.
Frustrated I doubted I will ever manage to finish putting this project together because it looked like Im just too noob.1 -
I have never been this serious with my life as a whole as I have since I started learning computer programming. I struggled to read one book a year (I mean non programming book like self improvement books e.t.c). Now I have finished two books in a little over a month and started reading a third book this month all while still studying programming. I started out with python and was honestly terrified of Java because of the semicolons, curly braces, parenthesis in front of if/else if/else statements but one day I decided to take a peek into a few Java programming books and found one "Learn Java the Easy Way" by Bryson Payne and it changed my life, quite literally. I read more now, I look forward to getting out of bed and any day I don't read, I just don't feel right. I need to read something and learn at least one new thing a day. If I feel awful at night, I just remind myself of the one new thing I learnt that day and that puts a smile on my face.
Side note, I am self-taught and started studying programming last year around November/December. Spent about two months on python and in January or February, I started Java. Been on Java since. Almost done with the Java book and looking forward to reading a more advanced book when I'm done.3 -
Not a productive day. I wanted to restore part of database from test server but downloading data using reat api was getting timeouts.
I made simple app that dumps data and I launched process in screen and started watching Dragon ball
I like those old first series with young Songo looking for his grandpa.
After about 2 hours and partial backup still not finished I started to cut crap data from backup script will finish it tomorrow.
Looks like my ux is still ok and views got almost all approved.
Need to fix some shit on backend but I need those backups to work for more complicated customers.
Luckily frontend developer is back so he will handle visual parts.
Maybe we will release new features on the beginning of February.3 -
Am I the only one wondering when the IT bubble is going to burst? I mean, I'm getting paid ridiculous money for things that could be done by trained monkey, I barely work more than 4h per contract and every year I either get a raise or swap job for one that gives it to me. How long can this go on? When the big tech layoffs started I though that's it, but nope. How the hell does this function12
-
So I have been tethering my internet at home for about a month. It did okay for what I needed, but I was getting maybe 2Mbps. Not great. I started looking for other solutions because I was only getting 20GB/month. I finally searched on a company someone suggested. I didn't want to because their service was DSL. Finally checked them out. For my location they offer fiber at 1Gbps at $65/month. I was floored. Free equipment, free install, no contract. Installed in 3 days from now. I finally feel like I have entered the decade of 2020. I can host stuff if I want. It will be glorious. Thank you technology advancement.14

Do you guys live a healthy life? Or are some of us here like the stereotypical dev who sits behind a desk eating bad gaining the pounds while stressing the fuck over code lmao
Personally I use to be quite active but now I'm getting back into bad habits and have started to notice that I'm stress eating <.< and choosing dev work over exercise...7 -
My DEV Story
After reading it, make a favor by ++d
Thought to be a software engineer in future
Learnt Python's basic modules, AI, and some ML
After getting intermediate in python, I started learning Java as my second language but could not do it because of JDK 8. Now don't ask me why.
Then, just stepped into game development with unity and C#, having a basic knowledge of C# with no experience in making a game myself. This is called ignorant.
After getting no success, I started learning PHP and got the chance to make a website having no content ;)
But it cannot meet my requirements
Soon I got content that AdSense regards as no content, no problem
I started learning Flask, a module in python for making web applications.
It took me 1 month to complete my website, which can convert file formats.
The idea for deploying it to the server
Sign Up to DigitalOcean
Domain Name from GoDaddy (I know NameCheap is better but got some offer from it)
Made a VPS for what I have to pay $5/month
Deploy my Flask App using WSGI server
This is the worst dev experience
.
.
.
.
Why in all the tutorial, they only deploy a flask app which displays Hello World only and not anything else
WSGI or UWSGI Server does not give us permission to save any file or make any directory in it
Every time........ERROR
Totally Fucked Up
Finally, it works on localhost with port 80
I know this is not the professional way to host a website but this option was only left.
What can I do
Now, I cannot issue a free SSL certificate through Let's Encrypt because **Error 98 Address Already In Used**
The address was port 80 on which my Flask App was running
Check it out now - www.fileconvertex.com8 -
I used to be hungry of learning, studying in university, watching premium video lessons online, being curious and deepening all the least known argument of a technology and getting started with a lot of personal projects.
Now I'm looking for a job and I discovered that working 1 year in daddy's company, without motivation and doing always the same stuff, worth more than all this -
So I started my frontend framework learning by getting to learn Vue. Now, like, a year later, and after I've got a ton of experience with Vue, having written numerous apps with it and earned some $$$$, I'm learning React. Just because of, yeah, react-native. I feel like a caveman just by writing all that annoying overhead. :/8
-
It's been a while since I started my first python course on Udemy.
I feel the urge to rant because as I'm leaning more and more and getting increasingly more interested in the subject, the instructor's tone is getting sloppier and sloppier and the quality of the videos is increasingly worse. Really, the videos are so blurred that I cannot read what the guy writes, so I have to turn the captions on hoping that he says out loud everything he types.
Fuck.6 -
Getting settled on a new team. They are using this custom built Dependency manager/Build tool. I’ve now wasted 2 weeks trying to get it up and I haven’t started my actual issue item yet.... sigh I wish I was on the team that uses Gradle.1

feathers js is pretty fucking garbage. All of typescripts types are junk, and the fact that it's "Getting started" example is a mother-fucking chat service drives me god-damn nuts.
Just show me how to return some fucking text first, yeah? Maybe some json? Is that so fucking hard!?
Fucking Garbage!3 -
Not a rant, just to mention, if someone is interested in getting started with k8s ( like me ) there is the summer of k8s - https://getambassador.io/summer-of-... if you want to give it a try

So finally I am getting started with Android apps. Ubuntu make claims they install the whole Dev stack for you in one operation. Except you need another jdk. Then know how to tell Android Studio where to find it. Oh, and there's an issue with IBus. And some stuff with LibGL. And X.

just started trying to master Emmet. I discovered it through https://vscodecandothat.com (thanks to whoever was the first person to post that link on here). any tips/tricks/tools for getting used to Emmet?

Ups and downs in devLand.
Day started with a meeting with one client. Guys, getting told "thank you" and "I appreciate your help" feels so good. Nothing could bring me down.
Then I get an asshole making the same request that we already went over -__-
Seriously, how many emails do I have to send. Sigh. -
Was trying getting started with javascript(actually web dev) by creating a simple app.
All i saw in tutorials were dozens of *JS and *CSS frameworks. What are the web guys upto?7 -
First go through any getting started guides or introductory tutorials. Then depending on comfort level and available time, either start exploring further on your own or search for more advanced tutorials.
Try to make use of what you learned, either at work or in hobby projects or small proof of concept programs, as the case may be. -
When I started branching out from frontend development and took an Intro to OOP course. I still do web, but getting more into the giant world of programming was really inspiring!
-
Not university. I hate the whole stigma behind university and that the only way to have a successful career is by getting a degree. I started learning myself by just googling stuff when i was 11 and was more interested in it when i grew older and was about 15 when i started watching a lot of YouTube tutorials, reading online articles and made a GitHub account. The best way to learn is by having passion for it, knowledge will come itself as long as you're determined to achieve.
-
So we had a service provider which would provide climate info. The service is paid for. Then suddenly we started getting irrational or no data. When asking the provider, he said their job is to provide the api and they're not responsible for the quality of the data which apparently comes from other places. So we basically pay for an api which we could have done ourself....2

My rant yesterday or whenever it was.
Dumbass tier 2 support staff told me i didn't know what i was doing and i had to do it his way while my way is pretty much the standard -
Hey everyone my name is nixon. I'm very new to programming. I jUst started learning go, because I'm planning on becoming a blockchain developer. It's been a little tough learning go. Do you guys have any advice or suggestions for me? I feel like I'm not getting it as fast.5

Does anyone have a good 'getting started documentation' for react redux with typescript. youtube videos and official documentation are mostly ES5.4

I've been playing with code for years, but only finally started trying to make it profitable by working through making websites for cash. A friend of mine is just getting into it brand new and is really dedicated. He is going to learn fast and I'm going to be able to walk him through a lot of my mistakes to move much faster than I did.
Is it bad that my favorite part of this relationship is that I will have someone that understands me when I make fun of jQuery? -
My apologies, Mistaken WK177 for "Last Successful project"
Now my least Successful project:
It was in the summer of many years ago.
I created a social network site for a camp site where I used to go. People were able to upload their own profile picture and adding some text to their profile page... with google analytics I was able to see what pages were used the most:
the webpage about: the opening and closing hours of facilities
after a year we shut it down because it was not being used.
And of course facebook started getting popular. -
Just started working at a new (very different) software engineering job after moving back home. The two hardest things in my training were: getting used to the French keyboard (azerty instead of qwerty) and Windows 10 after using macs exclusively for the past 5 years.
Why Windows why?3 -
Its 6 in the morning. I've been unmotivated to program since my highschool graduation. And I just felt some inspiration flow to me but at the same time crippling self doubt followed. I have projects planned but my lack of skill stops me and its passing me off because I'm already wasting my life. And I'm thinking of getting an IT job to start off since I have the experience from school but I'm deathly afraid I'll lose the touch I've started to get. Idk thanks if anyone bothered clicking and reading this rant.. theres no one else I can talk to about this stuff..9

Question Is there anything Linux doesn't support
I feel like it's too perfect lol
I just started getting into Linux a few months ago learning in my in my free time (on break now so yay:D more time) so I apologize if this is a stupid question3 -
Last position has me paranoid. Kept my cube mate in the conference room after the staff meeting. That's how me getting fired off my last project started.

3 weeks into getting dragged into another MS-stack project, I have already been repeatedly reminded why I decided to invest so much energy in moving my career as far away from Microsoft dependency as possible. Even something as simple as reviewing settings on Azure App Service is a hit-or-miss affair, being completely unavailable for hours at a time at least once a week. Azure Functions are consistently unavailable for at least a few minutes every day. Don't even get me started on "Azure DevOps".
Why the fuck do people still place their trust (and critical infrastructure) in the hands of Microsoft?4 -
I'm going to talk about ancient history. When I was getting started with computers, my dad got me a Radio Shack Tandy computer (yes, the ones you had to use a TV as a monitor). The damn thing was broken from the start, I'm not from the US, so returning it and getting a new one wasn't easy.
He managed to find some place to get it fixed, got me started with Basic, and here I am. -
Any tips to stop getting pissed at your designer's design?
I was given a frontend task after so long (I'm a backend developer who has frontend experience) and the design is very good except architecture wise it's very difficult to build. It's not impossible, but it's very tricky to implement.
Our client has already approved the design, so I guess there's nothing I can do about it
But I am getting constantly annoyed when implementing the design. Whenever I look at the design, I feel like swearing all the time. I feel the designer is very inconsiderate. The design looks very good at big desktop screen, but some part looks dumb in responsive or tablet.
Does anyone ever feel the same? And maybe have tips for me to get by?
My managers have started telling me to stop saying "it's difficult" or "it's too hard". But it is difficult! And I am getting more annoyed when they tell me that.
Whenever I tell the designer that certain part is not gonna work (because we try to make things general so we can reuse), he will argue and somehow ended up saying "come on, just think how prideful you will be after implementing this".3 -
Elementary OS provided a really nice getting started guide for indie app developers. Something which lacked in Linux world. Only thing I don't like that they presents GTK+ and Vala as their own technology.1

Getting started with Python's asyncio is probably the worst experience I've had with the language in 2+ years I've been using it.2

I am currently in the hunt for a job post college. However with the 300+ jobs I have applied to, I think I have also got that many phone calls from spammers. However, some of them are getting good. They use a CallerID (that isn't even the name or company they are) most of the calls are from stupid insurance companies. So I have started to play with them by pretending to be different food companies (PizzaHut, Papa Johns, ect.). I think this is more fun. What have your experiences been lately?2
-
Seriously Pope Gregory you couldn't make a more consistent calendar? We have extra days why does February have 28 still. Making my calendars program repeat events infinitely more complicated. (Do not get me started on date format inconsistencies). Thats it I'm staying single getting too afraid of the word 'date'.2

Have private dependencies anywhere and the `getting started` becomes 2/3 steps longer, and gives twice the headaches9

Hardware classes for software dev student?
Hey guys. Currently getting into second year of a 5 year curriculum to get an 'Integrated Master of Computer Engineering & Informatics' Degree here in Greece.
I'm already into software, I'm fooling around with java, go and php, making some games, web services and anything I find interesting in general. Recently, with the logic design class, I started liking hardware stuff (I didn't really like them before).
We're getting to a point where we might have to decide between picking hardware-centered or software centered subjects. I'm thinking that I can probably learn whatever is taught on the software side by myself (with a bit more studying of course), whereas hardware would be more difficult to study alone.
That said, I'm considering picking hardware, but I am skeptical. What do you think? I'll certainly miss out on the concurrent processing, data structure and how-a-compiler-works classes.
What do you think?
P.S. University here is free2 -
I got my first proper start in programming through a side business operated by the same guy that was running a local makerspace. He had me learn basic git syntax and change some values in ionic.
From there I decided the best way to learn how to do this was write my own project in angular. From there I branched of with React and Vue.2 -
- load tests via web
- load tests via api
- figure out why the fuck hibernate started proxying Blob.class after migration rather than using jdbc implementation, like before
- fix ^^
- reconfigure tomcat to ditch random for urandom completely [still getting econnreset]
- continue conversation with sysadmin, tester, analyst, 2 PMs, infra architect, junior dev
- provide immediate support for analyst and tester as soon as they need it
- provide support to another dev on another project
and that's my today's todo list. I think I need more personalities [more threads] to keep going -
Some Coworker - developing about 20 years with WinForms and very ugly code.
Me - Junior Dev about 4 years now started with WPF and not long ago with MVVM.
Me trying to teach him some MVVM... Just frustrating. Like talking against a Wall..
Getting a headache now. I need a stressball -.-1 -
I'm bored.
Waiting on people to answer and on software to finish running ... again.
What do?
I've started viewing CMake tutorials on YT, played that interactive git 'game', read some SO topics and archWiki entries.
Just struggling with concentration and getting myself to wanting to concentrate.
Oh and I'm almost finished with XKCD
Any tips how to spend waiting time useful but interesting/catching?7 -
So, my simulations started to take about a week to complete.
Productively invested the time in getting into Python!
I'm really liking its syntax and relative simplicity (coming from c++) and I'm kinda digging it at a sort of proof-of-concept producer: instead of talking in pseudocode I can just put down a python script to show what I mean. -
Started adding new MVC project to main solution at work. Started getting assembly reference errors across the projects during testing. Figured I might as while update the few assemblies that are complaining instead of trying to downgrade to maintain the current state of things. Shouldn't take too long right?....8 hours of staring at configs and running and rerunning nuget commands to get all the versions lined up across 120 projects....thank God we have extensive unit and integration tests...

Yesterday Ibdid buy an iPhone. I did it to learn swift development and people started to tell me that it was stupid.
I know I could have just used my emulator on my Mac but I just do not want to, testings apps is better in their real envieonment
I hope you guys understand my point, I am getting tired of all this "you stupid iPhone owner" shit
PD: I regret nothing3 -
Full time internship started, and I'm a week through. It's my first time in the industry and it's awesome!
Going a bit slow right now but I'm looking forwards to the future.
I didn't expect this, but the hardest thing so far has been getting used to the existing codebase.
Also, for anyone going into the industry, be humble about what you don't know. Ask lots of questions.2 -
Anyone else sorta kinda getting tired of jsx? I mean React is definitely really wonderful and all and I was all aboard the jsx train but now having my “markup” and js (sometimes css too) mixed completely together is kinda getting annoying. Sometimes I look at it and think its a mangled mess.
Started looking into Vue and really dig the way they separate the layers at the code level. You can have templates in your html or use the really awesome SPC format. Don’t know a lot about Vue yet but the structuring definitely feels right.2 -
After working for about a year and a half at a rather small web company, I've found that poor choices by management frequently result in me getting in trouble. (Adding new requirements to scope, moving up deadlines, etc) So I think my career goals are starting to move more in the direction of freelancing, at least part time.
Does anyone have any experience freelancing? Do you like it? How did you get started? -
Started messing around a bit with @LucaScorpion JavaRant API thinking I might make a command line app. Well I have about 50 lines of code later and it's working to get a random rant and all the comments. The trouble is now instead of working on it I'm just back to reading rants... No way I'll ever be able to work on this without getting distracted.2

So I'm doing angular 2 and I've started to notice that the time it takes to setup my website with al it's dependencies is becoming quite long. I know that longer load times are expected the bigger the site gets, but this is getting ridiculous.
Are there any general methods to reduce load times?1 -
So, we should be done with the redesign project for this site and a while back we got feedback from the client.
Now getting feedback isn't a bad thing, until you get 6 pages of feedback.
6 pages of feedback. It took me several hours to plow through it and check everything.
That was three weeks ago. They now want me to check the entire fucking list again, and then some more.
SERIOUSLY?!
When i started hete i was told that this was one of the easiest clients the company had. Because they see us as the experts. Haha.
Appearently not anymore.2 -
What a buggy mess suse 42.2 leap, since i started to use it, my love for mint is getting bigger and bigger2

Recently I've been getting sucked further and further into functional programming. Started with learning Java 8, and when toying with Streams I was looking into different features (dropWhile and takeWhile) which lead me to Java 9. Now I find myself fluent in Scala and learning Haskell. When does it end 😵5

Find top N values with MaxHeap in JS
Didn’t get it right in 1st try. Something wrong with the replace function. Then started getting busy...
At the end of the day, still didnt have a chance to fix it.
God damn it! It’s me. A frontend developer can’t write MaxHeap in JavaScript 🤦♂️ -
I started reading this rant ( https://devrant.com/rants/2449971/... ) by @ddit because when I started reading it I could relate to it, but the further he explained, the lesser relatable it got.
( I started typing this as a comment and now I'm posting this as a rant because I have a very big opinion that wouldn't fit into the character limit for a comment )
I've been thinking about the same problem myself recently but I have very different opinion from yours.
I'm a hard-core linux fan boy - GUI or no GUI ( my opinion might be biased to some extent ). Windows is just shit! It's useless for anything. It's for n00bs. And it's only recently that it even started getting close to power usage.
Windows is good at gaming only because it was the first platform to support gaming outside of video game consoles. Just like it got all of the share of 'computer' viruses ( seesh, you have to be explicit about viruses these days ) because it was the most widely used OS. I think if MacOS invested enough in it, it could easily outperform Windows in terms of gaming performance. They've got both the hardware and the software under their control. It's just that they prefer to focus on 'professionals' rather than gamers.
I agree that the linux GUI world is not that great ( but I think it's slowly getting better ). The non-GUI world compensates for that limitation.
I'm a terminal freak. I use the TTY ( console mode, not a VTE ) even when I have a GUI running ( only for web browsing because TUI browsers can't handle javascript well and we all know what the web is made of today - no more hacking with CSS to do your bidding )
I've been thinking of getting a Mac to do all the basic things that you'd want to do on the internet.
My list :
linux - everything ( hacking power user style )
macOS - normal use ( browsing, streaming, social media, etc )
windows - none actually, but I'll give in for gaming because most games are only supported on Windows.
Phew, I needed another 750-1500 characters to finish my reply.16 -
Don't spend your time trying to learn everything you need to know by reading books or watching videos. Anything you don't use immediately you'll forget and it'll go to waste. Instead, learn the bare minimum required for getting started and make stuff! After writing some buggy spaghetti code that somehow works, you're ready to read/watch some more. Then rinse and repeat.
-
I just started maintaining a few AUR packages, and I got to say it's rather fun and rewarding, just to know that your responsible for making sure that something is up to date, and that no one using the package is getting anything bad.2

Jfzktdlhdlhxsdlgzmh 😡😡😡
Started getting crashes constantly on all browsers, games and whatever.
Seems to be related to gen 14 Intel CPUs and Asus motherboards but my BIOS didn't have the settings I was told to change.
Anyone knows about this and has any pointers? They would be much appreciated.7 -
i had built up a great addiction to working out daily last year until i went on a trip to village on new gear and came back coughing hard. my cough thenlasted for a month followed by another trip followed by again coming back home and getting sick.
now its 3 months down this year, i am again healthy but haven't started hitting the gym nor do i feel motivated to :(
i mean, what is even the point of keeping your body in pain when it is as fragile and prone to diseases as it was when you were young :/ fucing shitty fragile body11 -
MySpace 😂 lol but no for real back when I was a Psych major people started asking me to make them a site after seeing some random sites I dinked with in my spare time for personal endeavors. I then realized it could be a career, so I switched schools and majors. I enjoy getting lost in the code and doing solitary work. I don't like talking to clients or providing customer support so, yeah lol 😂🤓2

just finished a prototype for my android app, when i all of the sudden find out about flutter and dart, and i have the fucking urge to rework EVERYTHING just because i fucking hate android studio and java for it verbosity
android studio is good in basically helping you limp along with java, but when i saw how smooth dart code works, i just started getting frustrated at every little complication the android API makes at doing android things in a java way
fuck that, i'm learning dart now -
So I just started working on a site for a new client who has been working on getting their startup off the ground. Their CTO has built the site so far but I've never seen so much styling and js online in a RoR app... FML.1

i am a B.Tech 3rd year student.Last month i started learning Php web development,also learnt HTML &CSS.
i struggled during the starting days but became quite comfortable with back-end development using Php,MySQLi, and JS.
But my concern is my Placements. I have seen students getting hired by top IT companies on the basis of their ranking in COMPETITIVE PROGRAMMING like codechef, hakerrank etc.
My question is that should i continue doing Web Development or should i invest time in competitive programming and stop doing web development?5 -
My parents bought a C64 when I was about 8. After getting bored of Flimbo's Quest and Klax, I started looking at the manual and discovered a world of creativity.
I remember slavishly copying dozens of lines of Basic code. After what seemed like hours I was rewarded with a tiny sprite of a balloon floating across the screen.
My sister thought I was crazy; I thought it was the best thing ever.
We never had a tape or floppy drive, so I copied the same code out at least half a dozen times! -
6 weeks of doing nothing except dealing with nightmares from the past in my mind I think I left all that crap behind and I am ready to jump back.
I don’t feel much anger and disappointment anymore, even some excitement for new crap to come by on my desk.
I started to write some code and practice puzzles for getting some decent job or project (again)
Puzzles are usually not a problem but I fail with HR.
When they’re asking me stupid questions I answer with stupid answers to piss them off.
But now time to get some money so I’d try to be gentle. -
when I started to code getting compilation problem showed some error. now after 3 years when I get no errors I always feel.."this should have some error"

How are redhat docs SO EXTENSIVE yet SO USELESS if you need to use it as actual user documentation? I thought they had their shit together, but after two days struggling to find any useful information I found a golden stackoverflow answer (sorry, but it's true) which - in my opinion - should have been the official "getting started" documentation entry for firewalld...
Everybody expects that you have your basic set of ports open (ssh for example), but nobody ever covers the configuration for that very important port 22 before you are locked out of your device. Thanks harperville if you're on here <33 -
That moment when you get started as a junior frontend and end up having to design a couple databases. I dont know shit about that. 😱 also in between I happen to become sort of unofficial IT staff in this music school. I'm confused. Not a proper rant, but just wtf? At least I'm getting money... someday. Maybe. 😲
At least I'll have my voice and piano lessons covered. 🌟2 -
Here's how my day's been going:
- decided to learn a quite popular JS framework
- installed with official installer
- used official tool to create an empty project
- ERROR! 20mins of debugging fixed it
- followed the getting started guide
- ANOTHER ERROR!
- "I must be doing something wrong"
- pulled the *official* demo project
- A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ERROR!
- "Fuck it! I'm making this from scratch"
(the framework is Meteor, btw. fuck Meteor)9 -
So I started learning html, css and javascript this year... After getting stuck in understanding a few concepts I started learning a little of sql and Java...
Now after a few begginer tutorials I have no idea where to go or what to dedicate my studies...
Most companies around my city use Java, but I'm already 29 years old and I feel like this will be a problem... Should I focus on learning frameworks and try big companies internships, or go for web development and start working on my own?5 -

Any advice for getting more from upwork? I just started and got my first job and want to hear experienced advices. Detailed answers are appreciated. -
So my government is proposing a new National ID scheme. This will be used to identify s citizen as well as keep track of property, taxes etc.
Parliament just started the debate on how it would work today. It’s set to be implemented by December 2019. My government tends not think things through so as to prevent s disaster like what’s happening in the Netherlands as per @linuxxx musings, I’m trying to gather insight from the industry to compose a document of considerations then getting a law firm to draft the laws it would need to compliment it9 -
So i started writing a long ass rant and then i got busy followed by getting lazy and i feel the rant has lost its meaning now :/

Eye problems
I've barely entered the field (10 months) and I've already started getting eye problems (headaches, eye tearing, etc.). what do you do to prevent such things?7 -

I'm thinking about getting into Android dev soon, can anyone recommend a simple (if possible video) tutorial series to get started?
I will be watching 'TheNewBoston' but I'd be interested in your suggested sources.
Thanks2 -
Instead of using MySQL, I zipped a bunch of json files... It's fast, but definitely not reliable, I was young and stupid, I should finally getting started with mySQL, srsly.2

And why this is happening only today and only these computers. Wtf7

All I want from Instagram reels is cringe creators dancing around producing more cringe,
But no, it has started to show me videos of people getting killed/slaughtered/slashed/shot these days.
I'm not even kidding, everyday it shows me a video of someone getting killed in a car crash, gang wars where someone gets shot in the head, someone splattering their head on the ground falling from a good height.
That too in full 4K quality, no pixelation or censorship.11 -
Reading through these horror coworker stories and getting anxious what my colleagues would say about me actually. I only started working part time 6 months ago and I definitely have a lot of moments when my questions are plain dumb. The recurring theme I see in these rants is the stubbornness to learn so to everyone reading these stories and getting self conscious stick to it :) having questions and facing problems the only way to learn something and get better. Thanks for the stories everyone.

Since I can't get my user stories today, I started on trying getting my angular frontend to communicate with my symfony backend. I now feel like I need a lot of climbing gear, because I get the feeling I went too deep into the rabbit hole.
getting quite confused with Observables and promises.1 -
I started coding after getting into college and was overwhelmed with so many people around me who were already pretty good at it. Slowly I started learning things on my own, getting few internships to apply those skills and built few small projects. Managed to get a dev full time job, spent the last few months learning Spring MVC and Spring Boot. When I now look back, I definitely feel I've walked few miles, although there's still a lot to learn. I once doubted whether I can be any good in the dev world as my peers were bagging good jobs/internships but now it certainly feels that I can move ahead in this path which I liked so much. Yes, programming is stressful and painful sometimes. The learning curve is steep but if this is what excites you, go for it! Spend few months training yourself and then applying what you have learnt. Just, never give up! You can do wonders!
Oops, was I supposed to rant here? That is of course necessary. You can't imagine a dev life without rants but let that be for another post. -
Started by jail breaking an ipod gen 2,which turned into getting homebrew to run on my Wii. Soon that turned into rooting my first android device and quickly snowballed into compiling themes for android and then building apps for Android. I was actually in school for xray tech but hit a wall in that waiting on a spot into the program. Decided I needed to proceed with my education and changed to a programming degree.2

Guy regularly comes off as woke in his shows. Been getting worse over time and it started really rubbing me the wrong way.
And in typical woke fashion, still has ass backwards stereotypes on women.2 -
Can anyone give me a good free resource for react for an intermediate level developer? I trying the react getting started documentation. its too early to formulate an opinion but it seems like very entry level.1

Few years ago, I started my journey on Ethereum development. I discovered an amazing and very promising ecosystem that is placing the foundation stones of the future of the internet as we know it.
So today, I decided to write a 'getting started' article as an introduction to some of the more obscure concepts.

Trying to build something that makes me rich by learning. Started ReactJS Going through events, state and props again. Really beginning to make progress. Will continue with tutorial tomorrow, and see how it goes. Still a bit unsure about the multiple levels of props, but getting there :) Also please suggest me more to learn today so it would be helpful tomorrow.

Getting started with my dissertation project for my degree. Using Java and Dropwizard for a backend service with a nice iOS client in Swift. Will make such a refreshing change from hacking crappy eForms together with jQuery and an Objective-C native bridge.1

The Sprint started and this Stupid Lady did not finish her work yet and I am stuck till that. Funniest part is figuring out what to tell in the Daily Stand Up. ' Going through the Code and getting Familiar' :P

Made some basic static sites in early 2010’s, started getting bootcamp ads frequently.
Eventually joined one & saw what I’ve been missing out on...actually tried in bootcamp and now I’m almost a real deal dev guy 👌🏿
...actually extremely happy but don’t wanna be that guy -
I wanted my MySpace and Xanga to look better and function better than everyone else's.
I created a very basic directory on my xanga linking people's real names to their respective xanga for my group of friends. I started getting requests to add people to my directory. All my friends would go to my xanga first so they could easily find our friend's xangas.
I created social networking.
lol jk.
But it felt good knowing that I made the Internet a bit easier to use. -
Since its summer I started a new project and decided to make a Linux app. I started to learn Gtk and when it comes to language there was bunch of options. The most supported one was C but I don't prefer C on GUI apps because of you don't have classes and other things related to OOP(I know there are workarounds for OOP in C but I don't prefer). Then there was Python. Python is great for little sized projects and writing Python is full of pleasure. However when things getting bigger, a language that is more verbose and more declarative is my preference. So I found Vala language. Its syntax is very close to C# and that was a good thing for me since I like C# syntax. Their documentation was also good enough so I started to use it and I enjoyed so much. I have found the language that has good and scalable syntax and furthermore, enjoying to write. But I see Vala is not so popular language besides there is no exact replacement for this language on open source community. I heard that it has a lot of bugs itself and that was the main reason of it but I think this language deserves to be more popular.

If anyone is looking for a great tutorial on getting started with a docker cluster check out https://dockerswarm.rocks/
I had a 4 node cluster up on Digital Ocean with Traefik + Lets Encrypt, Prometheus, Portainer, Grafana all that good stuff in under 2 hours. Not much longer to test a basic WP and Next Cloud container with full SSL. Neat stuff. Just burning through $100 credit for testing but it's been fun5 -
Hey Devs !! Recently I met with a girl and apparently started dating. But lately I found that I aint getting back the efforts I’m putting into it. And I am getting strong feelings that I won’t be able to stay with it as it will be nothing but toxic over the time.
This is also effecting my productivity and work which is eating me up.
Now I am planning to move on from this but attachments are holding me.
Ik it’s just about time and the decision I take but I want some suggestions from you guys so that I can think better and leave this situation with a good mind.14 -
It is incredibly frustrating to work with SDK with no proper documentation and less community support.
I have been struggling with errors and there's no Post online by someone getting a similar layer.
FUCKING HELL SNAPDRAGON NEURAL ENGINE WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO BE SUCH A CUNT. WHY ARE YOU THE WAY YOU ARE.
DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE DOCUMENTATION AND EXAMPLE.
I FEEL LIKE CRYING. FROM 1 WEEK IM GETTING NEW FUCKING ERRORS AND RESOLVE THEM, GET ANOTHER UNIQUE ASS FUCKING ERROR.

I started learning programming in community college, starting with Visual Basic, Java, and C++. Because of life stuff getting in the way, though, my learning progress has been very sporadic. Fast forward to today, it's like I'm learning all over again, but this time, with more support from meetup groups and resources on the Internet.

Hey! It's been a while that I've been searching about projects documentation in order to develop a template for the company's projects.
My goal at the moment is technical documentation, like getting started (for new developers), the project's dependencies, conventions, etc.
Does anyone have suggestions of articles, books, or any resources about that topic?
Edit: I'm planning to build this template, discuss it with the seniors and then present it to the managers.1 -
I started out self-taught and had little support or guidance in early positions, so I'd say being able to correctly understand what was being asked of me, or getting across my answers in a way that was easily understood.
I wouldn't know the right terminology, or wouldn't know the industry best practices. -
I like to design websites from scratch , I know basic languages. (average coder) where do I start? Comment below.9

I'm just getting into the developing scene. I'm looking for learning sources and outlets to get started with.7

Had an internship interview earlier this morning, it's a newer company just getting started says they don't have any technical aspects or employees yet so any programming interns would build the tech side up from scratch. They pay would start at $15 an hour with a guaranteed job at the end. Location is easier to get to than school.
I got an offer 20 minutes ago, I like the opportunity but I'm worried about them having college interns build the initial tech setup and work flow without supervision of a more experienced IT person2 -
September : started programming in xamarin Android. Slow, buggy and undocumented as hell.

So I want to start with rest API development in Spring Boot. Where's a great place for 'all-you-need-to-know' related to Spring? I already built other REST API's so I just need a quick getting started and know how to organise, configure etc. my java project.
