Boss insisted we all go home early because "holiday halfsies," so I semi-unhappily pack up and go home. At home, I write tests for a personal project instead.

Corporate proxies that block resources web developers can't work without are the worst, preventing npm and composer from working at all. Easier to work from home than at work.1

You can work from anywhere... anywhere in the world!
Hmmm... Yeah, right! But not when management likes warm bodies at the office.
I hate, hate, absolutely HATE having to travel to work, spending at least 45min to an hour in traffic just to get to work! 😤😡 And then rinse and repeat to get home... which means I'm up at 5:30 every morning to be at work by 7:30, only to get home past 18:00 - traffic permitting! *sigh* 😩12 -
Wake Up at 06:30 am
Go to work and be tired

Thanks to @C0D4 I rediscovered Folding@Home!
I've been running this on a very powerful server at home at full-speed for a few days now (quite some cores being used to the max right now, it's like I have a vacuum cleaner running full-time in my place 😄)
Then, last night it hit me that I have quite a few servers running close to idle (rented ones).....
I'm now running a total of 4 servers at full capacity with Folding@Home.
Can recommend!11 -
I will be working from home tomorrow.
*Today*
I am at office because fuck me! I forgot my laptop charger here. -
As a person who spends 99.99% of his time at home if not at school programming, reading, and watching netflix, what can I do to develop my social skills?36

Working from home routine (Lockdown edition):
1. Wakeup at 8am

3. Next 3 hours just focus on coding
4. Push code to source control
5. Focus on myself6 -
I use Windows at home. Linux at work.
The last couple of days I was "forced" to work in Windows due to the need of Microsoft Word for documentation.
I just noticed today, that when I rebooted and entered Gnome shell again, it felt like coming home.
:)6 -
I'm on my way to work and I forgot my headphones at home. It's horrible. I can hear people talk and stuff.
Luckily I got my trusty noise cancelling pair at work.1 -
I don’t know how it’s possible I use nearly 300 GB wifi on one day without being home.... This can’t be correct at all. Other days around 30/70 gb and not home 296...21

Anyone else working from home today? Love that my current workplace has this option.
My previous workplace would have laughed in your face if you even suggested of working at home! Only our bosses were allowed to work from home (surprise surprise?)4 -
Upgraded my phone at the weekend. New phone turned up a day early, and Vodafone also sent me a surprise Google Home Hub4
-
My biggest distraction: Working at home. I have a student job at my university and work at home. Just visit my boss every other week to show him the results.
So I always thought it's amazing to work at home. No need to travel to the work space, I can arrange my time as I like, noone's constantly watching what I'm doing.
Sounds great, right? Yeah it is, but is it productive? Lol no.
I'm getting distracted by everything. New mail about some kickstarter stuff, one hour wasted. "Can you help me with that computer problem?" Yeah sure. "Wanna play some League of Legends with us?" Sure, but just one round, I need to work. Ten rounds later I wrote like three lines of code.
I could ignore all that stuff, but I'm at home and can do whatever I want, right?
Results in me working through all night, because then there's noone to distract me.2 -
Both kids and my wife are home today.
Up until COVID working at home was great.
Today I work in the Palace of Pandemonium.7 -
Don't panic and break up your big problem into smaller problems and solve them in a logical cadence.
Also, when you go home at night...turn off man. If you take your work home with you, you will go mental.1 -
Germans get made fun of for being focused on work and not wanting to have fun (at work).
But it's exactly what I like about them. I would join and work at a German company in a split second.
Fuck all the small talks and fun Fridays, let's just get the work done, get paid and go home and have fun at home.22 -
Have to work from home for at least a few weeks..
i hate working from home..
my team Is all the social life i have. Already miss them after 1 day.5 -
A 27" monitor with a 1080p resolution is a match made in hell. Oh the eye bleach. (At home I got 30" with 2k or 1440p resolution. Much better viewing experience.)
I'm having my first day in the office in the new job after two week of remote work. I think I will prefer working from home office definitly (even though the office coffee machine is nice).
It doesn't help that the internet connection in the office is 100 Mbit and at home I have 1 Gbit.9 -
Went into home office today.
Forgot the laptop charger.
Half the days over and I'm at 16% battery.
Fuck.10 -
Brought my Mac to holidays so I can code... while at it, I realized that I left the charger at home ..Now I'll have to go home with a depressed state of mind2
-
I stayed at work till 8:30 last night writing tests. It was awesome!
Got home and told Mom: "sorry, got carried away".3 -
I use a MacBook Pro at home and a Windows laptop at work. The trackpad on the Windows laptop is flaky, so I prefer to use it with an external mouse.
However, my desk at home is kind of glossy/reflective, so if I’m working at home on the Windows laptop and trying to use the mouse, it doesn’t work well at all.
Since I don’t actually have a mousepad (I only ever use the trackpad on the MacBook Pro), I started looking around the house for something I could use instead that would make the mouse work better. I needed something large, rectangular, non-reflective, heavy enough that it wouldn’t slide around the desk as I moved the mouse...5 -
I really start to lose motivation to work when working from home..
I find myself watching YouTube videos for 4-5h a day instead of working..
Still get my sprint work done but man, it’s so boring after a year at home..8 -
Rant!
A colleague bought a mechanical keyboard to the office today.
Pro: if you miss a deadline you can blame that colleague.
Con: schizophrenia.7 -
Needs tidying and I’m not exactly using it for work at the moment... but this is my home office / bedroom setup.
There’s an Alienware Alpha hiding behind the MacBook, but it hasn’t actually been on more than once since the MacBook came home... 😂2 -
@devrant can I have a shirtless avatar please? Because that's how I work most of the time at home.3
-
Stupid fucking MySQL.
I thought I have fixed your fucking issue.
I'm hungry and I wanna go home. It's 19:38 now.
I was up since 05:00 and started coding at like 06:00.
Grrrrrrrrr fucking piece of shit.
// Or was it the laptop at home that I fixed this issue? I don't know anymore. I'll try to fix you at other day.6 -
Spends 5 days working from home at my desk.... Stressful week...
Spends weekend playing diablo 3 with son at same desk.... Relaxing...
Wife says I need to get out more.... *looks outside* raining...3 -
My setup at work and at home. I'm using Ubuntu on both.
I hardly use my desk at Home. Most of the time I'm using the notebook while I'm watching TV.3 -
I've spent my entire day at work planning my next home project. Probably the most productive day I've had at this company!

In 2 weeks FOSDEM will be held in Brussels. I'll be going with some friends. Are you coming as well? Perhaps we could do a little meetup at the event?
Poettering will be speaking at the event as well btw. Presenting.. systemd-homed, a new systemd component. I shit you not. The "outdated" home directories are to be replaced by a service. Home directories as a service, the next big thing?

What I Like about Home Office?
My squeaky clean toilet. No colleagues who Block the toilet, no colleagues who seem to forget their bathroom cleanliness at home -
Have you tried to listen to a programming conference at 6:00 while driving home after the night shift?

Now that most people at our company is working remotely at home, the worst thing is that everyone thinks I can somehow magically fix their home network..3

5 steps to make your coworkers go nuts.
Step 1: Get on their computer while they're not around.
Step 2: Choose a bit of their code and make it so it's in one long line.
Step 3: Comment out the line.
Step 4: Change the text color to the color of the editor's background.
Step 5: Watch them going nuts.9 -
Finally got around to rewarding my geekiness at the office with some geekiness at home.

According to many of the rant posts, I am not a programmer.
I wake up 8 in the morning, eat breakfast at home and then get to the office at 9. Work till noon and then enough 1 hour lunch, back from lunch work till like 6-7 pm, have dinner at office then head to the gym workout for an hour to an hour and half and then head home, shower and sleep at 11:59 pm.7 -
when everything you attempt to type in Monday morning is riddled with typos, because your keyboard at home is slightly different than your keyboard at work1

When you spend hours doing cross browser capability checks on your PC workstation at work and your web app looks like trash on Safari on your Mac at home.3

I only have one laptop monitor to myself at home, so I overcompensate at work.
Also, my phone has a potato camera.4 -
I kinda feel at home here in devRant because I'm someone who enjoys complaining just for the sake of complaining.1

At the age of 10 I got interest in ''changing computer'' things. I started to watch over the shoulder (I don't know if you can say that in English ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) of my dad. He programmed I2C and other microcontroller.
I started with little batch files and Visual Basic. I think we all know the ''Virus'' with shutdown 😂
At school in the computer lesson we learned a few other languages. I was the only one who learned these languages at home too. The biggest problem is that you think ''I learn at school and at home I can play games''.
Some day I started to learn PHP and Java at home. I came to Java with Minecraft. Yes, Minecraft. You can learn so many things (like the structure of a network packages from the server) and you can visualize everything with blocks.
Since the professional colleague we learn C# and Python which I use in some projects at home too, for example for the rasperrypi.
Now I'm 17 and I can C#, Visual Basic, PHP, JS, Python, JS and HTML1 -
Love working from home because I can literally scream at the stupid commentary that appears in my inbox.2

Back in office after 5 months of COVID work from home... Now my office screen feels positively tiny - and curved to the back, because I'm so used to my 33'' curved LCD at home... FML.

That feeling when you've been at home for 20 minutes and already want to go back to work. Wait, no. Reverse that.1

Was in the mood for distro hopping and installed Parrot (home edition, don't really care about pentesting but privacy features were a plus). Lovely distro. Already feel at home.1

Today is a funny Monday: all the people at office forgot their keys at home (me included, also boss included) Until we can enter the office, I'm going to code at public library. At least I'm happy to carry portable Notepad++ in my pendrive!!
-
90% of my time at work is spent debugging and fixing a horrible mess of years-old legacy spaghetti. The only "real" coding I do is my personal hobby projects at home.3
-
Making projects with C on a Windows Machine in College - Works Perfectly
Trying them on my Linux machine at home - errors on 20 lines6 -
Never! ever! EVER!!! run sudo rm -fr * inside your home directory! Hard lesson learned on a Monday :(
P.S it was not intentional at all!11 -
I'm a bit late I know (only 10 years or so), but I never use windows explorer and especially not the home directory with its ridiculous location... but why the heck is it not possible to access the home directory from windows explorer? There are bullshit categories like videos and music, but no direct link to the home directory. The small arrow at the "root" of the adress bar seems to be the only way to access users home. WTF?14
-
I'm learning Vue.js at home but I'm forced to learn Knockout.js at work because of legacy code. Makes me want to jump out a window.1

How NOT to cross compile code to Windows:

upcoming life choices :
- leave home( and a lifestyle where i live/eat rent free, save 90% of pay check, start work at 12pm and end at 4pm but still renowned for being the most productive engineer, workout and party) to live near office and wfo 3 days/week
- quit a relaxed job + look for a similar role in highly competitive/unstable economy + stay at home with parents who are very much controlling, and repeatedly quarrelling amongst themselves and/or with me/my choices
yepp, both points are true about my home life: its a physical paradise as well as an emotional hell1 -
As a dev (all kind of dev ) what is something you struggle with in a work environment? Or at home?8
-
I am trapped at Dave and Busters with a bunch of kids. I can't drink cause I have to drive them home.
-
Sat at home Giggling away to devRant. My partner asks what I'm laughing at and all I can say is: sorry my devRant to English transpiler is broken.2
-
We have been strongly adviced to be working from home until further notice. Schools are closed, so if employees have have who are now to stay at home rather than at school AND if WFH is going to be too much of a trouble, these employees can either take vacation days OR get a med cert from a doctor and stay at home w/o having to work (yes, considering the situation our govmt allows legal slacking for parents).
Normally I'd be excited to be told to WFH. But nowdays it just feels so.. normal... everyone's got that privilege.1 -
I have a 3 monitor setup at home. 2 are used for coding, 1 for playing Netflix/YouTube as "background entertainment".

My fav part working from home:
Sexually harass your co-worker at home.
and she cannot go to the manager about it.9 -
When you're new at a startup, never do overtime before you're regularized.
Enjoy going home early after work while it lasts. ;) -
How would you react if you got a dev job but had no technical stage at all? (coding/take home/quiz)4

Like most said, the home part 😂
I rejected the remote opportunity and decided to move to California in December, just to be locked at home for 2 months now8 -

Did you end up with a desktop setup at home or do you strictly stick with a laptop and dock it at home?8

Rant to myself: Don't try to be too smart, you dipshit!
3 weeks ago I packed 2 small changes in one commit, because I was sure (and obviuosly lazy) that no one will ever need these special changes separate.
Guess what happened today? Right, I had to make a change on an old version and needed the one half of this commit.
Cherry-picking ended up in changes I don't need and furthermore some nice collisions.
Thank you very much, past me, for saving 2 minutes 3 weeks ago, which now wastes half an hour. -
Why do people even need anything more than 100Mbps at home?
Are you guys running data centers at home?33 -
Dude how the hell are u even staying at home, I have been home for like a week now and IDK what to do, im bored as fuck.
Umm okay try writing my code in prolog, u would wish the inverse.6 -
Huh. I'm the only one here right now. I should have just worked from home. But I don't have A/C at home. ... I should buy a fan on the way home.
-
I am not a fan of programs that want to store their libraries in your home directory. It's alright if they store it in a hidden folder at least. I like my home directory to be nice and clean~~3

Types of horror
1. Gross-out: you come home, open the door, and a bathtub worth of corpse juice is dumped on you from the ceiling.
2. Horror: you come home, open the door, and see an ant the size of a horse staring at you.
3. Terror: you come home, open the door, and realize every single thing was replaced by an exact copy.6 -
When you're working on a project (directly on the FTP) from your computer at work and your computer at home and you didn't reload the code on your computer at home, so you just overwrite everything you just did during the day when saving a small edit... #FunTimes #FML #NoBackup5

Emacs.
I dunno why but I feel at home while using Emacs. It is like, it provides everything I need.1 -
At home, by night. Best combination ever, nights have some special connection with coding. Dunno what is it but it's deep.1

So I'm at my work computer, logged into my laptop two feet away using No Machine, trying to access my home computer using Teamviewer. Where will it end?!
The reason I can't just go from my work machine to my home machine is because we use an older version of Teamviewer than what I have installed at home - just thought I'd clarify before someone asked.undefined maybe a bit harder than it needs to be windows to linux to windows double remote login why do i do this to myself?3 -
Went out at 3pm, if public transport wouldn't have shit itself I would have arrived home at around 5.40pm.

Our working hours is 9 to 6, but it feels embarrassing to go home at 6 because you are expected to work overtime.5

Got a technical test coming up for a job. Had never been asked to do one before so I don't know what to expect 😅
(test at home and no time limit by the way so that's less pressure I guess) -
So I observed that my screen time was slowly increasing in past few weeks. This was mainly because there wasn't much to do staying at home and I was simply switching between phone and laptop continuously which was increasing my eye strain. Fed up of this never ending cycle I decided yesterday to log out of all social networks and only see all the social updates only once a day.
Let's hope this gradually decreases my screen time and eye strain too... -
Everytime there is something computer related to fix at home, my parents say: Thats why we send you to IT school.

When you have qwerty at work but you use azerty at home, sometimes your brain keeps switching layouts... lol.
