If i die, please commit my code before calling an ambulance.16 -
Today I figured out how to remotely control my student's computers and how to send them messages when they're not doing the right thing11

My company just fired 20 people, and the next day instuted a program so salaried employees have to clock in and out. Of course not to effect our pay, just to keep their paranoid asses breathing down our necks. Also, no clocking in remotely so all the work I do from home won't be taken into account. Fucking micromanaging, ball-licking, scum-fuck, MBA, morons couldn't run a company if their lives depended on it. When will these soul-less, suit-wearing, shit-scarffers learn that treating your employees with respect and valueing actual work over bullshit metrics, is a better business strategy than treating them like fucking sheep to the slaughter. Fml, I gotta find a new job...33

Large corporation. CEO tells everyone to attend this mandatory meeting via the internet.
I work remotely. I can't log in, meeting is full. But our colleagues have made a parallel meeting just for us in the meantime, where I could hear them make fun of the meeting, which is basically the CEO showing some Powerpoint slides to a room with 10 people. Nobody can either see the slides (bad camera or connection) or hear the CEO (crap microphone). 1000+ people watching this "mandatory" meeting that lasted for an hour. Nobody had any idea what it was about in the end. Just slides and muffled voices. -
I noticed that urban dictionary didn't have a definition for devRant.
So I posted one.
And it got rejected ):
*Bawls like a baby*
To the four people who will read this, if you're remotely close to being interested, let me know, I'll post it here.28 -
I work remotely. This means that sometimes I work with no pants on.
...ok I work with no pants on all the time.7 -
The bloke that I share my office with is asleep on the job. Ffs, can I get any support around here?
This working remotely from home thing, just isn’t panning out13 -
Fuck you devrant, pseudo funny remotely devrelated things get more upvotes than juicy outbursts of rage16

Recruiter: This is a 100% remote position
Dev: Good! That’s what I’m looking for.
Recruiter: But the company does require you to come into the office “on occasion”
Dev: I live 5 hours away from your office so that would be not a good fit
Recruiter: And once covid is over the ability to work remotely will be getting reconsidered. You’ll likely need to move cities in order to continue your employment with them.
Dev: Yeah I’m looking for 100% remote work
Recruit: This is 100% remote! Just with the need to come into the office sometimes now and potentially more later.
Dev: …15 -
I'm beginning to get burned out on coding in general due to work-related stresses.
Is anyone hiring remotely?
Please?
Will code in Ruby/Node/React for food ☹27 -
The best part of being a dev?
You can be a nerd, you can dress lousy, you got all those fancy tech you can work with, it's diverse, it's fun. And on top of that, it's not even remotely hard to find a job and get payed well.8 -
I love coding
But I hate coding
But I love coding
But I hate my buggy IDE
But I love coding
But my back hurts from all that sitting
But I want to work on my side project
But at times, it's frustration.MaxValue
But anything remotely related to coding I find interesting
But it's so hard to abide by good practices
But I love coding
But progress is so fizzlingly slow
But I love that elegant solution of the other day
But it took me 57 attempts to arrive at that elegant solution
But the shit I'm building is so cool

so I'm married to a developer. he works at horrible boring forever projects he is trying to make me apreachiate. well fine. I can do that. sure. but for fucks sake, why on earth does a web developer need to work weekends?! and why can't he get time off? why is it even remotely important if the shop is up a today or a week later? who the fuck cares if people have to wait a week longer to buy fucking pumpkin oil online?! who buys fucking pumpkin oil online anyway?32

TL;DR they blocked github
I work remotely, that means every once in a while I take my laptop and travel somewhere, work and have fun. This week I am visiting Turkey, they just blocked github 2 days ago... Freaking github... who does that?! and why?!7 -
Spent more than an hour on client's computer trying to figure out why it was rendering a font in bold, while every other device I tried (even with same browser/OS/screen DPI) rendered it in normal weight. Google Fonts were loading fine. After banging my head into TeamViewer window for the Nth time, I found the problem. The font was installed on client's computer locally, so it was overriding remotely loaded Google Fonts. What's the problem then? The local version only had bold version.
Deleting the local font fixed it.7 -
I am a back-end developer, never suggested otherwise. My company is a firm of 50 people and owner hired a web designer to code our website. And it got hacked. Badly. So boss tells me to check if I can fix it. I take a look at the PHP and boy, written in PHP3, copy paste code from all over the place, hell the admin panel is a clone from a 2012 tutorial, nothing that remotely stares at the DB is checked for SQL, and now he wants me to design a new website, rewrite everything in PHP7 and had the balls to say "I know it's not your job, but it's a job, so do it"5

I taught my 9yo sister to SSH from my Arch Linux system to an Ubuntu system, she was amazed to see terminal and Firefox launching remotely. Next I taught her to murder and eat all the memory (I love Linux, as Batman, one should also know the weaknesses). Now she can rm rf / --no-preserve-root and the forkbomb. She's amazed at the power of one liners. Will be teaching her python as she grew fond of my Raspberry Pi zero w with blinkt and phat DAC, making rainbows and playing songs via mpg123.
I made her use play with Makey Makey when it first came out but it isn't as interesting. Drop your suggestions which could be good for her learning phase?13 -
Apple at its finest. Sold the iPhone I used to own. Wanted to remove from iCloud. Open chrome on my Android device and was greeted with unsupported browser. Funny thing is it works if I tick open as desktop website.
Ffs apple. Your safari browser is the new IE of browsers. Yes my device is supported. Yes for Christ sake it can render stuff. It's not an old Nokia... Who even thought it was remotely a good idea to restrict mobile access...5 -
How I imagine everyone sees a rant about Google that says anything remotely good towards Google itself...6

The problem with working on a debugger for a living is that you can end up debugging a debugger debugging a debugger that is remotely debugging a debugger which is debugging a program...

Home office / lockdown story
Last year, when the first lockdown happened, everyone in my office started working from home. Including myself of course.
I decided to use x11vnc for remotely accessing my PC cause it is super convenient.
A few days into the home office and suddenly the remote keyboard acts weird, with random keypresses that I didn't do, and then the letter L was written over and over like it was stuck.
Assuming a bug in x11vnc, I restart it several times, but no luck. Whenever I open a terminal it is full of "L"s within a matter of seconds.
So I restart my PC remotely and reconnect the x11vnc, which is a huge pain in the arse if you have ever done it. And can you believe it... Still the same problem!
So, finally I gave up and went to the office to see what the hell was going on with my PC. I entered my office room and could not believe my eyes.
What had happened? The room cleaner had wet-wiped my desk. To create enough free space for that, she had first cleaned up the mess, putting the scattered paper nicely on the side, but then also *putting the bloody mouse on the bloody keyboard*.8 -
My dad only cares about how much I make... And whether I have an office. I have been working remotely lately, and to him it seems like I am lying about having a job2

That awful realisation that your job could so easily be done remotely from your desk at home while wearing nothing but underpants and eating pop tarts.2

Got rejected by a company in Italy because in order to work for them remotely apparently I need to have Italian VISA. Tried to reason with them that I'm an EU citizen and I don't need a VISA but they wouldn't budge. Its either VISA or ASTALAVISTA16

This was in my first semester in college. Some dude installed Teamviewer on any PC he got the chance to. There were people (idiots) who saw him remotely access PC and thought he was some crazy hacker!....
Damn. The amount of idiots I've come across with shitconceptions on hacking.4 -
When my former boss let me go, he asked "you devs do not plant some secret code into your software so you can destroy it remotely, do you?".
I smiled and walked away.
Needless to say I got some money on top on my last day at that job.2 -
What the hell @Apple
I know autocorrect / suggestions is getting worse every day but this doesn’t even remotely come close ☠️2 -
Fuck you gas company for back billing me 1500...I don't need you...built my own heating system...and with my managed pdu I can switch on remotely so its warm when I get home...so you can shove your heating app up your arse as well11

Rant.
So I work in the service desk and the moment and one of our clients use Mac's.
One of the end users called up saying that it was being slow and sluggish.
End user: hi my Mac is being slow.
Me: when did you last reboot it?
End user: last night
*Remotely connects*
*Runs uptime in terminal*
Me: are you sure you rebooted it last night?
End user: yes I close the lid every night...
The up time was 68 days...9 -
So my ISP decided it was ok for them to log into my router remotely and re enable the wifi.
I turned it off for a reason and no your excuse that it will improve my upload speed is bullshit you stupid patronising fucking shithead.
I'm now seriously looking into cancelling my service with you because you don't respect your customers or their wishes.
Also I'm guessing there's a default backdoor password into the router as I changed all the passwords I could find. Meaning the whole thing is horribly insecure.11 -
~ 10yrs ago, Dad: I'm a dev, your mom's a dev. I paid for you to go-to business school... But you still became a dev. And your brother also wants to be a dev
Now after me and bro moved back with then bc of COVID. The house is basically WeWork on weekdays.
Good thing we're all devs so can with remotely.9 -
When you work remotely and communication from your boss or coworkers sucks and you're paranoid that they think you arent doing anything since they dont check in with you.1
-
* Go to sleep at reasonable times
* Watch some of those anime I never quite finished
* Read more books
* Become more proficient with rust
* Replace go with rust at work
* Setup a weeb media center I can remotely
* Finally make a personal webpage/blog without overthinking things, to actually get it done
* Find or make a storage solution for all the memes I sto- I mean collected, where I can add tags to find them more quickly. Would love to have them have the tagging be done automatically with machine learning, but I don't think we're quite there yet.2 -
My coworkers are all working remotely because they're hungover, and all shocked I'm in the office today.
You think a night of drinking and 4 hours of sleep is enough to hold me down? Please. If I'm hungover enough to not go to work it means I'm probably in the hospital lol.
That being said, I have discovered that scotch does not agree with my stomach, so I'm not having the best time. At least I'm here though!9 -
Me: Boss, i am not qualified for this. This is something totally different that what i do.
Boss: Just do what you can.
* Me does something which seems to work*
-- A few months or even years later:
Boss: Our distributed systems don't longer work. What happened?
Me, after checking different system: Oh, there is a key that expired. I didn't know this key had an expire date. So they can no longer connect.
Turns out we have to visit every remote system (driving distance of a few 100's km) and set a new key. We couldn't do it remotely since we lost access.
Maybe, just maybe, when your employee says he isn't qualified for a task, listen and search someone that know what he is doing.2 -
*Anything remotely technology related has an issue
Wife : I thought you were really good at computers?
Last time this came up our coffee maker wouldn't turn on.
🤷♂️4 -
Do not assume that the current codebase is perfect, or even remotely close to an example of acceptable style/structure.8

Nothing makes me cringe more that some dumb fuck jabbing their finger at any computer screen to show me what they’re talking about. DON’T. FUCKING. DO. THAT. What makes you think it’s even remotely good for the displace? Do you see it freak out the way it does, that’s not a good thing. Stop fucking doing that!3

We work remotely, the only way I can collaborate with other Devs, team lead, product owner is slack. Respond to my f***ing messages people!3

Birthday rant !dev
>Be me. Buy 20 doughnuts for everyone in company, two more than there are people working in the office, just to be safe.
>Be one of 5 other people that came to work today. Everyone else either are sick, are working remotely or went on a delegation.
>Watch as 14 doughnuts slowly decay in the kitchen.
Well... At least I've got my package from devRant. Thanks for quick shipping! I only got it today because there was tracking. Fucking post in Poland is shit, they "tried to deliver it yesterday but there weren't anyone at home" even though I was and I haven't even got notice in the mailbox.4 -
Im working on a big project with a coworker that is working remotely. Basically we chat and call every day.
Today he is in the office.
Comes in, doesn’t even look or say hi.
Nice working with you pal.2 -
Wrote a vbscript(yeah for Real) that opened the CD tray...and execute it remotely to random guys pcs
-
I was part of a on-call rotation. We had ~800 microsites with decent traffic on this one box, because that's a good idea...
One day the box was experiencing kernel panics and causing core dumps. After exhausting every possiblity I decided it was time to restart the box:
sudo shutdown now
Missed the -r and the box was not accessible remotely. Had to wait for someone at the data center to terminal in.
Downtime was ~2 hours.
This was caused by a crontab that automatically ran apt-get update & apt-get upgrade... Also made by me... None of this should have worked or allowed to be done! -
Dream Project?
A script that remotely destroys all fax machines used by my clients so that they are forced to use vFax/fax2email/emailing their fucking PDF, etc.1 -
I hate doing estimates, but I had to adapt. Since I work remotely and under contract, I'm used to track my time and estimate by hours.
I did a lot of mistakes before, which means I worked for free to wrap up fixed price projects.
Today, the method that is working best for me is:
1) positive estimate
2) most likely estimate
3) worst case estimate
Sum up and divide by 3.
I do this for every task.
Also, for Web projects, I like to divide tasks in categories like: HTML / CSS, UX, programming, testing.4 -
Psst, tech world, fuck you and your so called April fucking Fools jokes. They are anticipated, way too obvious and are not even remotely funny.7

So I was setting up my friend's NAS. Got everything worked in minutes (dns, port forwarding etc.). Enabled ftp connection tried it locally, working. Tried remotely, timed out...
After half an hour I was about to tear my hair out one by one when he suddenly said to wait a sec he knows what's the problem. Tapped two on his phone and suddenly, it's working.
THE FUCKING PHOTO UPLOADING FROM HIS PHONE TO THE CLOUD BLOCKED ALL INCOMING CONNECTIONS AND HE WAS AWARE OF THAT ALL ALONG. WHAT THE FUCK MAN, DO YOU ENJOY SEEING ME STRUGGLE?? That was literally an "I'm out" moment. -
Me: Hello! Welcome to {Company} tech support. How can I help?
Caller: I'll just run through the situation. I got locked out of my apartment and my friend is still inside. I tried calling him but his phone is either off, Do Not Disturb, or something. Anyway, I've tried remotely SSHing our desktop computer from my laptop and using the say command to get the computer to tell him to unlock the door. Unfortunately the volume is too low. I tried Googling how to increase it via command line. But I found nothing. Is there a way to do that?
M: I suppose the doorbell doesn't work?
C: *click*2 -
Recruiter e-mail:
„Hope this InMail finds you in the best of your health.
I was going through your profile and found your Scala experience pretty attractive. Infact your experience matches one of the job requirements that I'm working on.”
Sure, but I don’t have anything even remotely mentioning Scala on my profile.2 -
One of my biggest annoyances: people say 8bit to describe anything remotely pixellated. These morons could look at a black and white computer image and say 8 bit6
-
Not a rant but I've been wanting to do this for a while now. Added some rgb mood lighting to my desk that's connected to a Raspberry Pi. Making a web interface next to change colors/set modes remotely :D3
-
Pushed code remotely and told a teammate to run it on the target hardware. He then told me he might of blown up $6000 worth of equipment. Then he says "Never mind everything works."
World record for biggest heart attack?1 -
Someone had the bright idea of going 100% on premise then only having the VPN on the server in the office building with no backup to another server. Well the power went out and no no one can work or work remotely. What a plan.2
-
I wanted to be able to physically start a home computer remotely.
- raspberry pi
- power relay to simulate the button
- a messenger chatbot linked to my account only
Now my local server is startable from anywhere7 -
You know the worst thing about being a freelancer? You're expected to wear every fucking hat and you don't get normal hours.
Over the past few days I have been working with a client of a client attampting to fix his server. He's running CentOS on VMWare and somehow ended up breaking the system.
Upon inspection there was no way to fix his system remotely. It wouldn't even boot in recovery mode. So we've been attempting to recover his data so that we can reinstall CentOS and not have to start completely from scratch.
So for the past 3 days straight I have been remotely logging in to a Debian Live CD and manually sending folders to a FTP server of his. He has somewhere close to 30 sites on this server, and upwards of 1 million files in total.
Yesterday either the system freaked out or he did something, but the entire fucking system stopped responding which forced me to reboot it, reinsert the live CD, reinstall evertything, and re-mount his broken systems drives.
Here we are 3 days in, we're still not done, and I'm getting slightly pissy because if you don't know Linux well enough to fix this shit yourself, you shouldn't be acting as your own sysadmin for 30+ sites.
Also, backups are a thing right? VMWare also has snapshots. I know the extra storage isn't cheap, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying soemone like me $35/hr to go and fix all of your shitty mistakes.2 -
I was fired by a client about a month back. I had spent about a year building a web application using angular.js for said client. Of course, it was my fault because it took about 8 months longer than I had forecasted but I believe what I was shooting for was something solid. I went as far as giving a full refund of the initial deposit on the project. My take away was I learned something new, going in I wasn't remotely aware of such things as CI/CD. Sad thing though they are trying to rebuild the app using wix.5
-
Nooooo !
I fucked up !
Please tell me what is going to happen if a pentester fucks up ?
I was just curious about the codes the developer was typing remotely while they were containing important datas :/
Fuck me ! I thought it would be nice if i take some pictures of that amazing code so the other employees misunderstood !!
They think I was stealing data ! 😭
What should I do ?
What can I tell them ?21 -
Me : "Hey, your class is internal, I can't call it remotely"
Other team : "Oh okay, wait *change it to public* Done, you can call it now"
*some days later*
Other team : "*switch back*"
Okay then, I guess it's a way to say "Fuck you" with commits2 -
Why the fuck is this site blocked. How the fuck is it remotely adult content? ITS A GODDAMN WEBGL GAME. And you blocked is as being EDUCATIONAL. WHY THE FUCK WOULD MY SCOOL BAN A GODDAMN EDUCATIONAL WEBSITE?
P.S. for all those that know me, i made a website a year ago, during english class, and it got blocked at school (my goal was to get it blocked). Or so I thought. It turns out it didn't get blocked at my school, it was blocked across the whole county! I feel accomplished.12 -
I became a programmer so that I could have the privilege of working remotely. So I am at home, my mom's place that is. I can never get in the "concentration zone" first thing in the morning, because before I know it, my mother and sister are having some stupid heated up argument about clothes and shit, and it bothers me anyway through my headphones -.-
Now I think I'd rather work in an office.8 -
Just started as a remote dev and I found that it's IMPOSSIBLE to work from home.
Get annoyed from something not compiling/errors? Go play some video games two feet away. Nothing going your way? Go lie down on the bed behind you.
But for some reason I can work from home way better at night.
Any other tips for working remotely?9 -
I don't like marketing people (nothing personal).
Most of those I had to communicate with, do lack anything that would remotely come close to brain activity.
A handful of days before the start of a huge event, for which we made a VR game over 2 months, they have the ovaries to tell us that the spectator TV doesn't fit the event's design and thus the VR game will not be shown at the event.
Wow.
Thankfully, half a day later, their CEO directly wrote us and told us to ignore them and to proceed with the preparations for the game.1 -
Yes, my Python scripts are not remotely pretty. But then, neither was my nonexistent formal training in scientific computing. And no, I will not 'write two lines of comments for every line of code'. Physics major programmer problems.1
-
Our main server that stores everything and that everyone uses has been down for about an hour now. It's okay though I get paid by the hour. Plus, I'm working remotely today.
Probably doesn't help that we let other people other than the IT department mess with what we put on the server.1 -
My business partners: "it's so fucking cloud!!" Whenever I do something remotely "techy"... so cringeworthy2
-
Unpopular opinion:
I currently work remotely, but as it's my first job I would love to work locally with other devs in a room... Motivating can be quite hard sometimes when you're alone.
(And I know this attitude will probably change once I worked locally some time)3 -
A coworker during scrum today: "Last week, I worked on the new feature. Also, I have an announcement for everyone: I'm going through a divorce so I moved in with my parents and will be working remotely for a while. I have no blockers...except for the divorce."1
-
If the project goes overbudget it's because you fucking gave away the custom made software for too fucking cheap.
Not because of the amount of hours building this piece of shit site which btw I was never consulted on the estimates and not even mentioned about the 2 different designs for the same fucking site or even how it needed to be architected.
As a contractor you depend on your time, not on a fixed salary. No perks, nor fucking swag.
My advice is if the company thinks that working remotely is a perk, then fucking run away. -
My classmate asked me to remotely download and install Java jdk for him via teamviewer. He's in 3rd year Computer Engineering...

Fucking shitty ad popping up every time I watch anything even remotely related to tech or science.13 -
As a software engineer, I’ve only *ever* worked remotely. I honestly have no idea what it’s like working in an office as a dev/engineer. Probably makes me weird. 😅
What did you like about working in an office, if you’ve had that experience? Was mentoring different? What did you dislike about it?29 -
I work remotely and have to attend a 'scrum' call everyday which I fucking hate. It gives me anxiety as I already dont like extensive phone calls.11

Our (new job) dress code policy is "that's what the CEO wears, so you have to wear a shirt too", but not enforced while working remotely.
So, I'll never be in the office.8 -
This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.15
-
When your wife doesn't understand the concept of working remotely and keeps asking you to put up flat pack that has been in the corner for a few days because you really don't want to put it up. Just because I am sat on the sofa with my laptop on my lap watch the whole series of west world does not mean I am not working. Working from your own house makes you lose your alpha male role pretty quickly when they realise what you really do. Perhaps I should put up the flat pack knock down a wall or something have a break from socket.io!8

Waiting for another prank by the dR team in April 1st.
Maybe they will like remotely wipe our data with parnership with the NSA.4 -
I live in a small town and work remotely. When I tell people, (even young ones) I'm a programmer/web developer they think I install programs or make simple sites. I try to explain to them that I make the things but it perplexes them. Maybe because they think all apps are made by hi tech wizards and not average joes like myself working for average companies. Any of you other countryfolk have similar experiences?2
-
Companies that create APIs and then update them but fail to update the documentation, to a point where the syntax doesn't even remotely resemble how it originally was, or even give the location of where the new endpoint is.
WHY MUST YOU MAKE MY LIFE HELL2 -
Computers are allowed to work remotely from their server rooms in the cloud but people are enforced to go to office.
Computers are superior to humans2 -
Looking for some advice....
So I'm a web dev that works remotely full time from home which I love, I'm expecting my first child in late march which is really exciting but I'm starting to think about how it's all going to work with the missus home for at least 12 months and of course a baby that (without sounding horrible) is going to be a big distraction to me when I'm trying to work.
So just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there in a similar position or that has gone through the same thing and how you did it? Is there any advice you can give me?
Appreciate any thoughts.13 -
FYI if you have ES file explorer get rid of it cause it has a major vuln that lets other extract files from your phone

Samsung apparently thinks they are doing us users a favour with their "genius" TV block feature.
Let the following be clear: I will never get a television which can be remotely disabled by ANY one, even if allegedly for my benefit.
In fact, I'd be happier with 768p "HD ready" garbage from 2005 that at least works reliably than a shiny "QLED+" Samsung TV that can fail without warning at the press of a button at some giant corporation's headquarters.
Remember the May 2019 Firefox incident?
"We can remotely disable your TV, but it's just for your protec...." Get lost.10 -
Is it so much to ask for ability to do my job remotely. I work on a fucking computer, I can do this shit at home. I don't need to drive 50 miles there and back to do my job.

People who assign vague tasks to you, without any context or anything remotely resembling a brief, for a project you know almost nothing about. Devrant is the only platform I'm considered to be even remotely funny.

DevRanters,
What's your take on your employer mandating keystroke monitoring software installed on your machine when you want to work remotely?15 -
Kay! Why people think remote job is less then a onsite job? Excuse me? I also work remotely. Okay I get it that onsite you have to go onsite through bus or blah blah , but your hours are not counting by a tracker and not getting SS every 2 min. FUUUUUUUUUUCK FUCK FUCK FUUUUUUUUUUCK ! Sorry I needed to let this out. I make extra hours since a few weeks and this only because 1. I'm the only dev of the team (will seriously need more people). 2. I have to manage people remotely which, as a 3 years old experienced dev, is not what I expect of my job. 3. I need to finish the job of an intern (not even her fault but de was asked to make powerpoints and stuffs instead of working on the module we need).
And today we just asked me if I can work on saturday. NO. I love (or used to?) my job but this can't last for ever.2 -
Get a "Covid-19" email from an online service I last used 4 years ago. The email boils down to 2 sentences of "we are working remotely as we have always done, there is no impact".
3 paragraphs of "here are the services we offer you should check out".
Fuck off1 -
A few months back, my Dad's friend (mother of a 10th grade student) asked me for help on her daughter video editing school assignment because I study 'computers'.
Me on the outside: 'I am sorry, I wouldn't be of much help here as I have zero experience with video editing'
Me on the inside: 'I am sorry, I design and develop software. I am not an all-knowing genius that knows everything even remotely connected to computers.'1 -
Remote work sucks! Honestly almost everyone that doesn't work remotely thinks it'll be nice to work remotely. Though there are advantages like doing whatever the fuck you want to and working however the fuck you want to work. (only thing is you just can't attend meetings without a shirt on). But nope, it gets boring and lonely. When you lose motivation there's no one to fire you up. Burnouts will hit you more than it should if you work onsite. My first and second jobs are fully remote, and I'm sick and tired of this shit. Hopefully the third would be onsite.8

I've been working remotely for more than 6 months, but today it's the first time I'm coding wearing only underpants

My company is 8 days late to pay my salary.
The government (uae) recommended a 4.5 work week and my company hinted they wont abide by it
My company promised us bonuses and shares a year ago that we still didnt get
Altho we have been working remotely for 2 years due to covid, they are also trying to enforce going to the office...
Everything about the company is way too toxic
I want to leave ...
but all my applications get ghosted so i feel like a slave, its like i need this company otherwise im jobless. I haye this6 -
Suicide Linux:
You know how sometimes if you mistype a filename in Bash, it corrects your spelling and runs the command anyway? Such as when changing directory, or opening a file.
I have invented Suicide Linux. Any time - any time - you type any remotely incorrect command, the interpreter creatively resolves it into rm -rf / and wipes your hard drive.
It's a game. Like walking a tightrope. You have to see how long you can continue to use the operating system before losing all your data.
Please install: https://qntm.org/suicide9 -
The person who claims we should be "in control" of our stack and not use any of this pre-made, one size fits all, BaaS bullshit.
Even though none of our projects are even remotely close to needing scaling and whatnot.
Then proceeds to argue all we need is a step by step guide on how to deploy things very easily using Cloud Formation.
Spends the next two weeks trying to figure out why config files and scripts don't work.
And now that we have that "recipe", we're fully capable of deploying our own pre-made, one size fits all backend.1 -
Decided to swap ISP.
Arranged that my new ISP started today and my old one would end next week so I had some wiggle room for issues.
Today my old ISP just disconnected my house in the middle of the day.
Then my new ISP failed to connect me and _might_ have it fixed tomorrow.
Looking forward to working remotely over 5G...5 -
Why do marketers always tarnish the name of new concepts by turning them into buzzwords?
For example, "Cloud" is one of the most misused and overused words on the internet. If something has anything to do with the internet, it's likely to be plastered with the word "Cloud".
It's like "App" all over again. Anything remotely related to technology is called an "App" by it's marketing team and layman users.2 -
I've passed recrutment for a remonte position for a dev gig in one company. I've agreed to terms etc and then the problems started. First of all the company asked me to work on site for two weeks. I've asked if they would cover the living costs there and they replied with the question if I could stay with any relatives there(wtf???). According to the rep there, they don't cover the costs because the company is doing me a favor for hiring me remotely. I got pissed and resigned from the position. I can't work for someone that thanks he is doing me a favour by hiring...3

Curiosity killed Ben the cat.
I work in Android Dev. I use scrcpy to control devices remotely. I realized some phones have chrome remote desktop on them...I thought, what if... I open my computer screen on the devices while these devices cast their screen to my computer. Classic mirror loop effect, align to the pixel, staring down the abyss of infinity mirroring... until i took off my earphones to go check this effect on one of the devices.... my computer audio was being played on all devices running chrome remote. :( I feel so stupid1 -
Who the fuck comes to the idea of printing the local IP address on the Fucking screen?
Yes, I know that it is not remotely accessable (only when there is no port forwarding set for that ip), but think of that this way: Someone manages to get in that network. Without scanning the network, you would have your first victim. You could analyzer the traffic of that victim and find more victims. And so on8 -
You want me to work in-loco, even thought my job can be done remotely? That's fine.
Your company's offices are located in a expensive district of a expensive European capital? That's fine too.
You want to pay me a salary so low, that I can only afford to live 2 hours away from work? Fuck That!!!
If your company is in a expensive location, either offer me a high salary or stop bothering me with bad job offers. -
So my father asked me what I think about filemaker. I researched, while we were waiting for the food (restaurant) bs holy fuck, I've never gotten this bad vibes from a from something I believe to be a scripting language.
> proprietary (Apple)
> only articles I found about it were related to LinkedIn or at least written like they were
> not a single text based tutorial on the first pages of the search result, only videos (didn't watch them, because my mobile data is too scared for that)
> I can't find anything remotely explaining what this shit is about.
wikipedia was the most best resource I could find

I'm amazed so many people have "one" favourite editor. I have a whole bunch depending on the situation:
- IntelliJ whenever dealing with Java files
- VS whenever dealing with .NET
- VS code whenever dealing with Salesforce
- Notepad++ when just opening "any old file" to do some quick editing (never been won over to Sublime)
- vim when needing to edit files in a console environment
- nano as the second choice in the above situation when vim isn't available
- Emeditor when needing to open / work with very large files
I've never even remotely found a "one size fits all" solution.2 -

I feel like 75% of stories here are about high schools. Maybe it’s because of the younger user base but also I think school security is beyond woeful.
I can’t even tell if my school just botched the setup or if the vendor thought it’d be a sick joke but we had software that the teacher would use to remotely look at everyone doing work but we found that if you press the help button it opens the same window where you see everyone’s desktops and can mess with them (how trivial, I know).4 -

So been working with Linux for almost 10 years now, so am not new with this. But yesterday, a friend had difficulties accessing Wikipedia and their sister sites so I tried to help him out, you know, the usual way. Ping, Direct IP, DNS, and proxies/VPN, checking his /etc/hosts, but to no avail. Decided to download TeamViewer and install it so that I can help him out remotely. Went afk for 30min for dinner and when I came back, TeamViewer installation .Deb installer literally uninstalled every single software from my Kubuntu machine, from Spotify and slowly even my file manager and terminal was uninstalled. When it was over, even my grub was uninstalled.
Had anyone faced the same issue before?8 -
Let's say you have a business that is 100% gonna get canceled from lots of internet infrastructure services because reasons. Let's say you decided "Screw it. I'm gonna build all my own infrastructure and services from the ground up and deliver all my digital content to millions, including broadband video, apps, gaming, devices, etc."
A) Is that even remotely possible?
B) If money were no object and time were not of the essence, how would you do it?
C) How could that even scale at all if thousands of other businesses did the exact same thing?13 -
Bloody superglue. Every time I think I'm remotely skilled enouh to make a "quick repair" using the stuff, it always goes beyond horribly wrong and ends up with blobs of superglue all over the desk, one hand stuck to the thing I'm meant to be repairing, and the other stuck to some random nearby object. Dahh. Seems so simple.
I'm sure there's a dev analogy there with your least favourite language too.6 -
I'm considering to build a powerful, small/semi-portable mini-ITX PC. Just small box you can easily travel with, kinda like a laptop but a lot cheaper and without a screen, keyboard and battery - I can't really work on laptops anyway (ergonomics!). Stuffed with something like a 4400G when Renoir (mainstream Zen2) comes out, so lots of processing power. Add 32GB+ RAM and one or two SSDs.
I'd say the reason is that I might work from abroad (remotely) next year, but honestly, it just gives me an excuse to break my piggy bank!
What do you think?11 -

Verify with your coworkers about how you plan to attack a certain feature if you’re unsure, especially since you work remotely. If not, you’ll have to fucking redo a feature three times -

Google acquired two interesting products companies last week.
One is making customizable phone apps from spreadsheets the other is gathering sales data from local shops.
appsheet and pointy
At this point I think they’re still missing code editor. Microsoft have visual studio and amazon as always was first and acquired c9.io when vscode was one year old.
How the fuck they missed the code that would run remotely on multiple machines should have ability to connect to one node with debugger after they fucked docker with their k8s.6 -
KDE Connect is really a blessing. The fact that I can do everything and more with Android plus Linux combo than iOS plus Mac is superb. I mean, I can remotely send power off command, start Spotify and control it, remotely start apt upgrade, or turn off the screen is so useful. Plus I can reply to the any message from any messaging app, get notifications and transfer files quickly from PC to smartphone and the other way is just great.3

I REMOVED every single thing that EVEN REMOTELY looked like it's handling redirections, I REMOVED ALL PLUGINS, and I STILL GET FUCKING REDIRECTIONS and THERE IS NO WAY TO DEBUG IT BECAUSE I GET REDIRECTED AND I DON'T GET A RESPONSE FROM THE CODE I WRITE and OF FUCKING COURSE it does not in any form LOG THIS SHIT ANYWHERE because fuck me that's why.

I think I joined the wrong crowd. After the recent Hackathon, I proposed that the team that I was working with, form a company in which we continue building apps, launch and try to profit. Y'know, the whole build fast and die slow kind of thing. Granted, I proposed it late November and we're all gearing up for the holidays. Now its January and everyone has this mindset of "if we don't meet, we don't get anything done" or "discuss face to face only". Guess they don't like the idea of working remotely.
I think I might just quit this venture after a couple of meetings with them before I lose my mind.4 -
Casting Netflix on the latest Chromecast devices forces you to re-log in to your account on the TV every time you click that Cast button on your mobile. A minor problem for people with a small family and no friends. A big pain for those who cast from different accounts.
And a massive problem for me and one of our hardware solutions which remotely streams mutliple chromecast devices via a UDP directly in to different rooms in a hotel.
F*ck you Google TV, you insistent piece of crap, I'm going back to Chromecast Ultra.3 -

Update from the hackathon:
We decided to create a co-op game where you there is an agent on the field who has to reach an objective, while the operator guides him toward the exit on each level and opens/closes the remotely controlled doors for the agent. We want to add enemies that somehow will try to kill the agent, but we'll see what we manage to do. 🙄

I worked on a project that used an archaic homegrown library written by a consultant that had zero documentation, tons of reflection and here is the kicker... the consultant refused to give us the source code as it was "his intellectual property" so we couldn't make any sense of how to actually use it. Moreover, he worked remotely so the timezone difference between us meant that any questions we had took ages to get answered. Glad to be away from that project now.4

If you're looking to buy IoT stuff, you should try Xiaomi. Not only their stuff works, even when you block Xiaomi servers, but it can still be controlled remotely from an independent server. Why the fuck is Seagate's official bootable HDD/SSD toolkit 32-bit??? It's bad enough that it's TinyCore, but it's 32-bit, so even while booting it tells you to fuck off if a drive has >2TB worth of LBAs, but it's meant for ALL their drives! Their Twitter support was predictably useless, too, and was just "we don't support running the bootable disc off of anything larger than 32GB" and "we don't officially support Linux formatted disks in our tools" (neither of which were even remotely close. The first one I can understand, it was an untrained knee-jerk reaction to a number they recognize, but the other one...)6

Daily stand-ups might seem like a joke when done remotely, but I believe they help unite the team, and they play a key role for project managers, even if they're brief. The bigger issue might be just some of the dev's attitude towards it, and the lack of communication through out the project development.4

Hello
This is my situation:
Junior
Data Scientist
No working experience
From Latam
From Venezuela
Only allowed to work remotely
No work visa for USA or EU
Weeks looking for job, no luck, obviously.
Everything seems to be against me for land a job, at least a decent one. The other option is try to work in Upwork for 100 bucks implementing full pipelines, that is a joke.
Just sad.13 -

So is it just a standard thing, now, where interviewers get you to do a coding problem remotely on a shared notepad while they watch you over video chat? For me at least, it is the most uncomfortable style of interview I've experienced. I don't think I'll ever get through one :(4

If these aren't great mentors I don't know what is. They first took me into their company with no prior experience as an intern for six months working remotely a paying internship at that and they paid for my internet. Six months ends and they offer me a junior web developer position in the company, buy me a mac and and a second screen and still paying for my internet with an increased salary. And the team works like clock work all the time with everyone giving a hand to whoever is struggling with whatever not to mention they're very patient... I love this company FUCK!!!

I seriously doubt I can program anything remotely useful without having a language/library documentation on one cheek and stackoverflow on the other.2

Not sure it's so much about my vacation, but my boss' one. I look forward to uninterrupted days in the office where I can work without much small talk or having to explain my logic in great detail to a non-technical boss. Whoah there, not so fast. Turn up at work on Monday morning to find my boss online on Slack waiting to chat with me. He's on the other side of the world. It's the middle of the night for him. And he says I'm not allowed to work remotely... -

I have one full stack dev, who claims to know Python and Webpack, but the funny thing is that he is complete shit in anything he does
As he is working in office and I work remotely, CEO and CTO give all his doings a priority
The most fucking part was when he left a project for 2 weeks and when came back he told that nothing had changed.
... he didn't even look to the code, or running website, he just told thst nothing was done
I was so insane, that I told him almost everything I think about him
Fortunately, I am still on this job and he in not working on this project =D -

To have a professional job that lets you work remotely from the comfort of your home in your own office; which pays you well enough but doesn't pressurize you into unachievable deadlines. One that gives you ample time to relax and do some part-time projects for yourself. One that lets you spend time and contribute to the communities you're part of and help you grow both professionally and within the community.
Oh, and best of all, work in the open - open source, open culture and transparency. -
I saw similar question on reddit, so I decided to ask it here.
What purchase has improved your quality of life and work? Especially those working remotely.11 -
Who else finds its hard working from home/remotely? since I've been working remotely full time, I feel like I've been working harder and longer hours, I think its because I'm being evaluated solely by outcomes that I feel the need to put in more effort. Not like the days where I could rock up to the office for 8 hours and that was good enough, no matter how much work got done.1

Guess what i just did. I shorted the entire fucking building. And all I was gonna do was install a couple of lamps. Fuuck. I'm never ever again going to do anything even remotely electrical at work without consulting a technician first ever again. Fuck fuck fuck. I'm so fucking unlucky.

Am I the only one who when studying for an exam has the urge to copy all the slides by hand? And I mean not typing, good old handwriting. Then scrible in them and add own notes, write a summary and then try to recall it all.
It doesn't seem very efficient but I do not feel complete or even remotely prepared if I haven't done this. Although I did pass exams in the past without doing all of this...2 -
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.

2013 I guess. It's the year I jumped on the IT train. As a unix/linux sysadmin in a worldwide bank, been there for over 3 years. It was an amazing experience. Used a lot of my knowledge and learned even more. Got a chance to play around with enterprise software and hardware [remotely], deal with various vendors, have business with folks from all around the globe, learn enterprise processes, incident handling, be the initiator of automation of our processes,...
Boy it was an amazing year. In both professional and personal lives :) -
Got a question guys!
I want to capture screenshots from a live video stream being broadcast over HTTPS, such as the one on this link:
https://open.ivideon.com/embed/v2/...=
I can do it locally using the chrome webdriver in selenium, but cannot reproduce the same in a server I'm accessing remotely. I tried using headless browsers like phantomJS, but apparently it doesn't support video players -_-
I'm confused because I don't even know what to search for anymore, I've been stuck with this one thing for the last 17 hours. Any help would be greatly appreciated!5 -
Just curious, how do remote workers onboard with their company?
And I guess basically now all offices are closed, what happens after your hired, your first day of work?
At my company to work remotely, you would need a token card and access permissions.1 -
Friendly reminder to trim your services list with msconfig if using Windows. Services that are STOPPED are not DISABLED, and they can be brought back up when just stopped, sometimes remotely.
(This reduces chances of being bitten by malware that uses the Fax service or similar, as there are a few that have in past used often-unused services to propagate. It also reclaims a small bit of memory, and the more real memory you have, the less you page out when compiling or similar, which is slow as fuck.)
also for the love of god stop using RDP and use something that's more penetration-proof than a paper plate...11 -
My company has 3 core partners but one works remotely nearly every day of the week and the other has his own business to run (attorney). It's funny being the one in the middle hearing about how each of them never knows what the other is working on for the company in an exasperated fashion, when all it would take is for them to talk to one another. I literally schedule meetings on their behalf just so we can all get on the same page. "Oh, you don't know what he's putting into that business proposal? We could just ask him and find out."

What do people feel about remote work?
I got into my current work about 8 months and we all were remote working.
In 8 months, we met in person several times and worked together at one place for a week or two.
We have never overcome the feeling of a disconnect when we work remotely. There's less focus and less clarity on things to do.
Is this common? How do people be focused and productive in remote work?
Also how do people communicate effectively?2 -

Add-on signing is censorship in disguise.
Imagine Google could remotely delete YouTube videos you downloaded, to "keep you safe" from the "bad content". Well, Google and Mozilla can remotely disable extensions you installed using their pre-installed trojan horse called "add-on signing".
Always remember, whenever a corporation cites "for your protection", consider it synonymous with "so we can control you more".12 -
Websites requiring recent browser versions indirectly puts control into the hands of browser vendors.
If users are forced to update, they are at the mercy of browser makers Google and Mozilla. Google and Mozilla can deliver whichever malicious feature they feel like, like mandatory add-on signing with updates.
Add-on signing is the thing that caused all extensions to be remotely disabled on May 3, 2019.
Also, Microsoft can disable your computer through an update if they wanted to.

Rant:
My jupyter notebook has outgrown itself on some real world trading data analysis and its becoming a pain to add to (further) and share.
Need to find better alternatives, web apps where are you?
But i know nothing about it. Learning curve ahead!
Requirements:
I've 7 interactive dashboard plots (from some data) in jupyter-notebook.
- It'd be nicer to have a web app to use them without running notebook from a different location.
- Or running notebooks remotely (running as daemons on host machine).
Any suggestions for a starter ?

Working on 3 projects solo remotely and everyone wants their changes promptly. Also, I don't disclose to clients that I work for other people. (Being me)
Finished with 2 projects today so gonna Netflix and chill ( I really don't have a gf and idgaf), I need pack of smokes really bad and internet outage just in time when I finally finished, now waiting for more changes eagerly so that I can get paid finally2 -
Here's how my day went today:
1. Smoked weed after a 2 weeks break. Got high as shit.
2. Included cardio in my gym routine as an attempt to get over my exer-phobia.
3. Landed a client from the UK and negotiated a 15 GBP/hr contract working remotely in India.
How's yours going?2 -
Has anyone ever had success with getting a job oversea from where they originally are from (not working remotely) and any tips on taking a chance to go that path?2

Im looking forward change job, but i want to work remotely for an small startup where i can wear many hats (i have very diverse skills), but i cant see where to look for those startups.
Any recommendations about this? thanks!5 -
Sitting in the kitchen by myself, headphones in, eating my Kebab, fondling on my phone, minding my own business. Of course I want to talk about your project I'm not even remotely involved in

I currently don't have access to my good computer, so I installed a remote control software on it. I also made sure I could turn it on over the internet (Wake on LAN).
This worked well for some time: I powered it on remotely and after a few seconds I was able to connect to it.
Now what I didn't know was that WoL only works if the computer has been shut down completely. It does not work if it's in standby mode.
So I turned it on today, but didn't establish a connection immediately, and after a few minutes, it apparently fell asleep (standby). Now I can't reach it remotely, and I also can't wake it up again with WoL. And as I don't have physical access to it for about a month, so my only hope is that there is a power cut and it will be shut down the hard way.2 -
Having worked for this company for around 5 months remotely,I still don't understand how how things works here..when to consult and when not to.. everyone am supposed to work with seems bussy with other staffs and keeps on postponing the meeting to discuss issues..I barely cannot withstand4

Hey JS/Node combo. Get your shit together as I'm really pissed of when I see shit like this. This is why I keep myself distant from everything even remotely connected to you but this time I really want to do web extension.3

Why is it that people volunteer on behalf of developers!?? For anything remotely technical!
No we're not a "tool" for you to use! Or a "magic wand" to make your problems disappear! FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! -
I'm just dumping 10 GB of data remotely from a mysql db, because my el cheapo VPS run out of space
can you suggest a good book?
oh, actually I already found one, the title is "Prepare your fucking server/workspace properly if you want to play around with a lot of data"5 -
Spent two days setting up software remotely through windows rdp through teamviewer several hundred miles away. Today found a malware replacing some exe causing web app to fail. Local partner seems to be blaming us.

gulp started throwing premature close on useref:dist yesterday
said it was on a dependency
spent whole afternoon checking gulp issues and reviewing dependencies
as it turns out, it was nothing even remotely related to the error message
it was a spread operator used to merge objects
why must the Lord test me like that -

I wish i could just get fucking fired. Only 1 month in and im getting sick of this bullshit already. Havent even started the bullshit. I want to work remotely from HOME and i cant. $8.125 an hour wageslave in office. I FUCKING WASTE $200 MINIMUM A MONTH JUST ON GAS TO GET HERE TO OFFICE INSTEAD OF SAVING IT BY WORKING REMOTeLY. That means i get $200 (if I'm lucky) or less leftover every month. Just enough to buy a sandwich to survive and continue being a good slave.

I'm working on a project which monitors streaming videos from several Rasp Pi devices wirelessly. Should packet loss occur, the bitrate is reduced remotely by the central computer. (Packet loss is inevitable as wireless devices will compete for wireless bandwidth.)
To demonstrate my work I asked for a wireless WI-FI router rather than bringing one in from home. I wish I hadn't bothered... -
Our developer who normally deals with all the staff enquiries is going to be working remotely from now on.
I'm not complaining or anything, he's a great guy. But being able to focus on our projects is gonna go through the floor.
It effectively makes us 2 men down in a 3 man team -
Cable/Internet outage. Tried to contact ISP (Mediacom, who are awful)... Reported outage over an hour ago, but no update.
So, I figure it's time to call then...
In support app, selected "Call someone now." Selected sevices. Drop-down for "Tap down arrow for list"... contains the single placeholder "Tap down arrow for list". Plus, of course, you cannot submit the form without making a selection from the list.
Fuck your fucking support app right in the java-hole, Mediacom.
I did not need any more reasons to hate you - you are already at the top of my list, with no one else remotely close behind.3 -
What's a good book to learn ELK hands-on?
I have an instance set up and working but want to need some more advanced features? like mapping, index templates, querying remotely for aggregations.
The Elastic docs feel very high level and maybe assumes u can read their minds... A lot of snippets I just go "uhm.. where do I put this in the file, which file?"4 -
Back to my parent's home for the holiday, I need to work remotely. And holy Fuck wtf is this connection. I juste spent four jour straight installing Android studio and cloning a github repo. Fuck countryside let go back to the city with all the horrible building and a good internet connection10

Youtube got fucked up again. All suggestions suck now, I cant listen to music remotely revelant to something I was listening 2 minutes before. It feels like they are litterally trying to develop algo that gives you same category of content (music) but as irrevelant and random as possible...3 -

"Ultimate" success for a dev?
I don't know what that would be, so I'll be answering that around my experience.
Start really poor, so when you start making good money, you value and appreciate it.
Work for a company (Startup/MNC doesn't matter), and build your network with people/clients.
Work really hard in the beginning era and fail as much as possible.
Quit said company and build your own client-base, cutting the middle men out of the equation.
Work on your terms after that, remotely obviously.
Years down the line, come up with your own idea and start a company which makes enough money to retire with ease, not worrying about saving up for retirement. -
I've been to a meeting where I asked a question and the reply I got was not remotely related to the question.
He asked me ' Does my answer makes sense?'
I said yeah.
Inner me: I am so tired and I can't repeat the question once again. Aren't you even listening?.1 -
In the beginning, even those who are remotely involved with the task/project want to contribute to it. Over the time, as they realise that there is some serious work to do, one by one the turn quiet and drop out.
But as soon as you take action to make sure that the whole thing is going to work out in the end, they come back complaining because they feel that you went over their heads.
WTF?! -
I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like Led Zeppelin, and even less so anyone who thinks putting pineapple on a pizza is even remotely OK.10

Because you maintain a WooCommerce payment gateway plugin, a user contacts you to ask if it can do something that seriously extends the basic checkout functionality.
An e-mail conversation ensues to clarify the nature of the request and see if it is even remotely in scope for the plugin (it isn't).
Final e-mail from the user ends with, "It really isn't all that hard. I think you can probably knock it out in a day or two. ;)" -

Spend all day trying to connect to my online database remotely just to realise there is currently a bug with IP wildcards on MySQL and I gave to add every ip that needs to connect to it manually. What if it's a dynamic ip? Have to add the new one everytime it refreshes. Seriously?!1

> Get sent to local client that manages most services on prem themselves
> We just deliver the software and setup instructions, client is self-proclaimed "technical enough" to handle the rest
> Never had issues with them, client for about 1,5year, we assume they are indeed technical enough
> Local client needs me for some help with their "backup solution"
> Cron job that dd's entire disk every week to external ssd.
> External ssd finally caved in after what was most likely years of torture
> Has nothing even remotely to do with our software (which has built-in backups, which they apparently don't use)
> I get scolded and screamed at when I say not our problem

Two security researchers have published details about a vulnerability in the Windows Printing Service which impacts all Windows versions.
According to a Report of ZDNet : The vulnerability codenamed 'PrintDemon' which is located in Windows Print Spooler (Windows component responsible for managing print operations). The service sends data to be printed to a USB port for physically connected printers. In a report published, security researchers Alex Ionescu & Yarden Shafir said they found a bug in this old component that can be abused to hijack the Printer Spooler internal mechanism. The bug can not be used to break into a Windows client remotely over the internet, so it's not something that could be exploited to hack Windows systems over the internet.4 -
Did any of you managed to pull off 2 fulltime positions while working remotely? What was your experience? Im working in one job where I have standups late in the evening and in a given week I work maybe max 10 hours. Im thinking of finding another fulltime job.7

Are there any worthwhile jobs were you (remotely) can code part time on the weekend. Want to make some money on top of my daily job.
Maybe it would also be possible to contribute in the afternoon (since my timezone is utc+2).
Languages of choices would be Java (preferly spring boot stuff) >> Python / JS. Any idea if that is possible?4 -
Received a Slack message basically telling us not to panic and that it's not fatal (then saying it's less than 3%), and we'll have sanitizers in the office.
So, if we wash our hands and use the sanitizers often, we'll be just fine.
Didn't stop me, though, from getting WFH. So, got back to my home city and I'll be working remotely from here for at least a week (starting from Monday).
Will get to extend it to two weeks if it doesn't impede my work.6 -
Stupid Adobe Experience Manager only works in IE11.
I develop on MacBook pro.
I setup remote desktop on a windows computer at office to remote in so I can work on my MacBook remotely and deploy (manually via copy and paste into a text area called “HTML code”).
Everything is setup for the weekend.
Boom, it restarted itself and went to sleep after a Windows update...1 -
So I'm not sure what I should learn next. Developers love vue more than react. But I prefer to work remotely and I lost the count of how many job ads require React js experience. Every employer wants react. Would you still suggest to learn vuejs despite this? Right now I know javascript and I abuse jquery (front end developer here)2

I hate my internet provider.
I configure everything to work remotely and when I try to login to it I got "Http Status 502".
I thought I misconfigure something and recheck everything and still got "Http Status 502".
When I use the internet connection provided by different provider, it works!
Everything is hard to debug without you messing it up internet provider. It like trying to debug the code and find out the problem is in compiler.8 -
Fuck nrwl.
This stupid puddle of barf software that gets talked over like it's the shit. Nothing remotely useful works when using it. It always craps out some dumb exceptions that have nothing to do with your actual code but the dumb fuck, that didn't have the brain cells to think half a step ahead when doing his job.
It's just a buggy, mostly useless piece of shit that some guys in nice suits sell like it's jesus 2.0.
I hope you burn in hell.
I haven't been this mad since a looong time.2 -
Question.
If you're working remotely- like a whole other country/continent- do you have to give taxes for the country the company is in?
Context. Got a "job". Not sure if I'll take it full time but for now I will be getting some backpay so I want to know everything before deciding and planning
Right now in my country I don't have to pay taxes so I want to know if that still stands3 -

I moved to a foreign country, is it practical to try to freelance remotely when I've acquired the skills to build websites? I don't think I'd be ready soon, but I'm just curious of others opinions. (I've got a pretty good grasp at HTML, CSS, jQuery, and JavaScript.)

I only spend like 10-15 minutes to go to the office by motorcycle (that's the cool part, to avoid traffic).
In the past days, these 10-15 minutes are everlasting: like i start my engine and then i feels like an hour before i get home or to the office.
Man i really need a vacation from my life or to start working remotely (working on that)2 -
Best:

Worst:

Began working on an old project at work today. It has been about 6 months since I last touched it and 10 months since I began working here. No one that works here knew how to get the project running on anything other than one specific computer in the office...i work remotely. So instead of remoting in I finally figured out how to run it on my computer!
*crash*
Turns out it only runs on vista.... -
Hi everyone
I have a pretty old sansui tv in my room that I lost the remote for ages ago. I would like to remotely control the TV without having to buy the actual remote for the specific model (which is ~$28). Any ideas on how I can find the remote codes for the tv so I can program my own remote? Let me know if u guys have any ideas, thanks!!3 -
I really wish i can jump and be focussed like alot of the developers i have met. I tend to take long to get focused and long to get out of it. The reason why it was so hard to work with companies and easy to work remotely

Holy shit why does change management have to be such garbage? I've never worked anywhere with a formal change process that felt remotely like it adds value. It seems like it's even WORSE when there's a dedicated change/process team. They just get super edgy and jaded, likely because no one wants to follow their ridiculous requirements, and bitch at people whenever the real world happens and things have to happen "out of band".2

Ever used Camunda?
Their documentation feels like it was written with GPT-3 and they put random hyperlinks in there. And if they are remotely close to something useful in there they are like: "How about this article about something which sounds about right, but will just reference back to this article, because we want to be like Wikipedia and put hyperlinks everywhere".
Also you will get a brain stack overflow while trying to decipher the 50th layer of the documentation to something, some random guy on the internet could explain to you in two sentences.1 -
Any android devs freelancing/working anywhere in Europe?can you post your hourly rate (before tax), years of experience and country where you worked on? I have 2 years exp as android dev and worked in france remotely for 20eur/hour but that was 2 year ago. Wondering how much I should charge nowadays if I have 3 years experience? I guess i should go for atleast 25 euro/hour?8

No issues so far as we working remotely from our homes
all the things are going same and so the work -
Gotta love it when your untouched code worked just hours ago locally and now you have no idea why everything breaks, what has gone wrong and how to fix it ... but it's stable remotely on dev/test/live. Project runs on localhost + vpn on company servers. I can dynamically change the parts that shall be compiled locally and the rest will be loaded from the company servers.
Fucking great.6 -
I am starting as a full stack developer next month. This is my first serious job after college.
Do you think that the first three months used as probationary period are to figure out if you can handle the job?
The position includes some technologies I know very little about, but I'm hoping to figure them out fast as soon as I get my hands on the code (with no documentation). How do you learn once you start on a new job? Contact with co-workers will be reduced since I will start by working remotely. Any suggestions on how I can pick up speed and gain as much knowledge in a short amount of time without burning out?9 -
Okay, so debian is just fucked by default then.
Created a Debian 10 persistence stick, and I'm having the fucking xorg issues ("No screens detected", xrandr says the same) i've had every fucking time i've installed debian, except a simple round of dpkg-reconfigure isn't fixing it this time.
Suggestions?
Things tried:
- dpkg-reconfigure <every package even remotely related>
- X -configure
- installing all firmware from linux-firmware repo
- reinstalling everything remotely related (with both reinstall and purge/install)
- Wayland ("failed to create compositor backend")
- creating my own xorg configs and driver-radeon configs and all that shit with my screen explicitly defined
- remaking the stick with a redownloaded ISO
- actually installing it to a HDD first
- crying in frustration
- different monitors
- someone else's machine (both AMD GPUs, mine's an R9 380, his an RX 3-digit something-or-other)
- an NVIDIA card (other tester threw his old 1080TI in his PC, set up all the drivers and shit, and nothing fucking changed)
what is this, Fedora?3 -
got to love them assessment tests...
wondering will they figure based on my answers that I'm a psychopath who can burn to ashes their infrastructure ( remotely from other pc ) if they don't play cool
... or imagine after finishing one of those a msg apers on the screen : please remain calm and on spot, a swat team is dispatched to your location... -
Okay, so i always was like an anti corporate rebel, i moved to bigger city and ended in marketing agency working remotely and explaining to this guys that i can't create rest api on their server because they are allowing only get and post method and client wants delete put etc etc, normal thing. Is it normal or it's something wrong with me ? Maybe it's time to switch to C++ and go to some corporate company ?

I suspected my partner was cheating with her colleague at work, but was not 100% sure about it. I could not acees her mobile
phone because she had a lock on it. I reached out to this great hacker who remotely hacked her phone and i coukd read all her
text messages , whatsapp messages , call logs , photo gallery and i saw all her escapades with different guys.
I immediately filed for a divorce and moved on with my life. you can also spy on your partner if you send an email to
