Get Visual Studio 2017 RC right now! It is much faster and uses less space, almost 5x less than 2015.10 -
After wasting most of the afternoon trying to fix Visual Studio, I can honestly say is is the worst IDE I have ever had the misfortune to use.
Seems the only way to "fix" it is to erase it and reinstall.

Yesterday I could reproduce the bug everything I ran the program, but I could not debug it. Visual Studio would not break at my breakpoints.
Today Visual Studio works fine but the bug cannot be reproduced at all.

Lesson of the day: If Visual Studio starts acting up (doing inexplicable and illogical shit that literally makes me question life), just delete the .vs folder. In fact, don't delete it. Fucking shred it with a file shredder. Or even better, write it to a CD and burn the CD.6

A Visual Studio solution that had 62 (SIXTY TWO) projects for a webpage that was like 8 user forms total was like going to a shop to buy 3 items and receiving 15 tickets for that.
PMs saying no to refactoring due to not having enough time for a months. The first task took me 2 days just by fixing cyclic dependencies among the libraries. Went home and merged all the projects to just 3, building instantly in just two hours. Fuck idiot PMs that do not know how to code, buys shit and don't listen to devs. Fuck all idiots.4 -

What the fuck Visual Studio? Last day my app was compiling succesfully. I DID NOT CHANGE ANY SINGLE FUCKING THING BEFORE I LEFT OFFICE. Today it refused to compile. It didn't even show the source of error, just says missing a reference.

- Close VS re-open project. Compile error.
- Restart computer. Compile error.

Hello everybody. First time ranter, so please be nice.
Starting off with a classic: text editors.
I'm mainly a .net developer, so I mostly use Visual Studio (with vim key bindings), and (g)vim for everything else. However, visual studio code is slowly winning me over. It's sleek, it's pretty, and does a lot of cool stuff. It doesn't do all that vim does though (or does it in ways I don't yet know), and is slightly less customizable. On the other hand, vim sometimes feels like too much overhead for what I use it for.
What do you guys think? What do you use, and what personal gripes do you have?10 -
Running Microsoft Visual studio and Android studio IDE simultaneously on an 8gb ram PC. It was an annoying experience until i "accidentally" clicked on Chrome... and my sorrows ended! Phewww.

I have been using Linux based system from so long but last week I was building outlook add-on using Visual studio. It was a nightmare to work on visual studio(Or any IDE in Windows) after working for a long time on Linux/UNIX based systems. So much of mouse clicks, worst console experience, etc. Windows is definitely not for developers.11

Ok, Microsoft just released Visual Studio for Mac. Now there's literally not a single reason why i would want to use Windows over Mac as a developer.

Pretty much anyone here knows Scratch. And most devs make fun of it (while most also know it's a real programming environment), yet what do you guys think about BLUEPRINTS or Visual Scripting?
Starting to learn Unreal, I have two choices. C++ or Blueprints. While some argue that Blueprints can't achieve and replace C++ in Unreal, I saw others ignoring the fact and making awesome stuff you didn't think was possible. I saw how powerful even this node-based programming environment is and started learning it. What do you think?

Just tried to install the english language pack for Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise (the thousands of bucks edition). Well... the setup displayed "DEU" for german and later tried to switch to "EN" resulting in "ENU". First WTF moment.
But what really killed me was the error message... please restart the PC BEFORE the installation? Just wow.

Visual Studio test adapter was failing out during the discover phase of the tests with a stack overflow exception, but that's all the information it gave me. The tests simply would not run.
Hunting through the code line by line, I eventually find this.

As a .NET dev I get questioned about using VS Code in favor of full-blown VS. My arguments are that it is faster, lightweight and overall more user-friendly.
I use it exclusively, for all types of files and projects (JSON, SQL, Angular projects, .NET Core, ...)
Do you guys like using VS Code as well? What do you use it for?
Also, if you ever want to annoy a colleague, try associating all file extensions with Visual Studio and watch him go bonkers.7 -

Wanted to move Visual Studio to a different hard drive
So I uninstalled it and went to install it anew, only to find out the installation location was set to read only.
I then found out I had to run the installer with the arguments /uninstall and /force to force a complete uninstall, thus allowing me to change the installation directory... What the fuck Microsoft?1 -

My mind just exploded. Visual Basic?!? Noooo.... Really? I don't want to learn that Microsoft shit.... But it's good paid work so I'm trying it right now.
To be honest? I'm suprised, it's not that bad and I think that problems are not in languages, it's about cooperation, flexibility and enthusiasm to solve problems.
So don't judge programming languages and solve problems with them.

So I have figured out that Microsoft loves Dungeons & Dragons.
Because there must be some mechanism in visual studio that uses some botched up version of the D&D rule set.
"user clicks a button, computer rolls dice, gets a 6, 6 means you are lucky".
"user clicks another button, Computer rolls dice again, gets a 10, now I crash".

Our new project is a responsive mobile-first web system coded with HTML, CSS, jQuery and AJAX that connects to MySQL, but the main tasks runs trough a huge application written in Visual FoxPro, per client request...the web version could manage the whole business but no, it has to be Fox.

It takes ages to get visual studio with all required tools to generate windows build of an ionic project. Windows for dev(atleast for mobile web) is not at all smooth.

I'm a 17 year old boy and I have a couple of years of experience with coding. At school we had to choose between a couple of things to do 2 hours every week. One of them was about computers and programming. Sounds fun, right?
The teacher is letting us code in Visual Basic in MS Excel. I tried to explain him that I know how to code, but he still wants me to listen to him.
He doesn't even use any indentation! I can't look at it and I don't want to use VB it sucks just let me use js or anything else but not VB! Why won't you just accept I'm 10 times better than you! Just let me do my thing!
Now he thinks he can challenge me with a password strength checker. I want to use js, some regex to make it very short and efficient and a nicely styled web page. But now I'll be forced to use a horrible programming language (VB) I never used before!24 -
Debugging an elusive database query problem. Attached to server process about 10 steps into the call stack trying to figure out why a a column value is not being properly cast. In comes Windows. You picked the most inappropriate time to restart for updates without asking me. Restart VM, authenticate with VPN, wait for 2FA, start up Visual Studio, enter credentials for the millionth time to authenticate with version control since the remember me checkbox doesn't work, open solution. Now where was I? Then Windows pops up a notification to inform me the updates couldn't be installed. The following comic strip comes to mind.

I spent 2 hours googling and scratching my head trying to implement asyc Tast<ActionResult> on asp.net MVC. I even copy and paste the exact sample code and still didn't work. It turns out that "Visual studio for Mac" doesn't support asynchronous calls.

I just quit my job at a big market research company. It was disturbing how much processes there depended on excel and obscure visual basic scripts.
They load data from a database, do typical database tasks with excel and upload it back into the database.
PhDs run complex statical computations through an excel interface that passes the request to R.
Instead of an hour Python they execute stupid tasks with excel by hand. Day after day, month after month.
WHY? My colleagues were not dumb but instead of learning SQL and some python they build insane excel tables.
Maybe it's time pressure. But this excel insanity costs much more time in the end.5 -
I've been working on a shader for the past few days. Lots of doing math on paper and switching to code to implement it. Yesterday after 3 or 4 hours of trying to figure out why nothing is rendering, I realized that I wrote all my * for multiplication as x. Visual Studio never let me know its a syntax error, and my fried brain saw no issue. Needless to saw my shader is still bugged to hell, but at least my multiplication works.3

I need a bigger SSD. I launched Visual Studio (which I rarely use so it only had the default extensions installed) to clone and build the new Windows Terminal to see what it's like. Had to download over 10GB of extensions and features first, and then compiling the project ate up every last byte of remaining space.

I just used Visual studio c++ for the first time. In comparison to intellij it just sucks, so many features are missing, im fighting with the editor all the time.. For example Code completion, visual studio suggests me the method name, i press enter, new line inserted, wtf? Apparently only tab is working here, next try, visual studio suggests method, I click tab, method name inserted but whithout brackets, omg. The standard shortcut for commenting out code is CTRL+K followed by CTRL+C, if you want to use the code again you need to use CTRL+K followed by CTRL+U. HOW STUPID IS THIS? Refactoring of code, e.g. Method names also sucks...5

Visual Studio Code + Mac = not lightweight, really not that good performance
I mean the battery is burning. Literally, i plug my mac out and after a hour the battery is dead10 -
I know better to open a solution in Visual Studio on a network share over a VPN on crappy WiFi.

They say it's designed to be macOS styled yet it is literally the same visual style and element location to mono-develop for linux and mac, piss poor effort when even creating new project uses the same form layout.2 -

Damn it, Visual Studio 2017! :( It crashed without reason and then upon restart ate up all my RAM. Killing all processes in Task Manager helped a little, but something was still using up a little too much of the CPU and RAM.3

Someone is having the same problem with VBCSCompiler on Visual Studio???? Every time I need to rebuild solution I must kill the VBCSCompiler.exe task before that.

Is there any extension for visual studio code that allows markdown to be exported as proper linked TOC PDF? I have tried now atleast 5 different combinations, pandoc, convert markdown etc. and they all produce either really non matching content (pandoc) or don't link the table of contents right. (but atleast show the content 1:1 of what the preview is..)2

Why the fuck does microsoft feel the need to be different?
One small example is VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).
When calling a function iw does not allow you to use brackets.
Example: Funct (arg1, arg2) is not valid but Funct arg1, arg2 is.
If you want the damed brackets you'll have to use call.
Call Funct ( arg1, arg2)
because after the first function is called, functions within that as arguments need to have the brackets...9 -
I feel like working in Visual Studio is gonna lead to me developing really bad habits. Whenever I save, VS locks up for about 15 seconds, completely killing my momentum when I'm used to habitually saving all the time. I'm starting to consider not saving my work as often, despite knowing it'll come to bite me in the ass eventually.9

Typescript integration in Visual Studio SUCKS!! I waste so much time fucking trying to set up Angular 2 boilerplate that would take almost no time in VS Code or another editor because this bloated piece of garbage has to try and hack everything into MS build tasks and "Virtual Projects".
You would think that the company that created Typescript could figure out how to integrate it properly into their flagship IDE!!!

What the holy fuck! Resharper is fucking dog shit! I've never used it before and just had to install for a new job. Visual studio was running great on my machine with 32GB ram and i7 processor. Installed resharper and it just doesn't work. How the fuck does anyone get any work done when it takes literally seconds to register a click! I get it's features are impressive but it means fuck all if it stops me working3

So I’m a huge fan of visual studio, but it let me down today.
“Find all references” just straight up fails to find all references of a member in this big F# solution I’m documenting.
I need to be able to reliably find what I’m looking for.
Reshaper for visual studio appears to not be that maintained for F#. FML.
Download Rider evaluation on the off chance, it works flawlessly.
One begrudging commercial license purchase later (despite being the only employee) and I now have software that actually fucking works.
What a wonderful time when Microsoft’s official IDE fails in analysis of its own language. -

Just to auto format code. So I'm now thinking of speeding up my workflow by using AutoHotKey which by the way is the best thing ever invented.
If anyone uses VS and is interested in me sharing the ahk script then let me know. I just feel like pressing 4 keys for simple tasks is just a waste of time and easy to forget.3 -
Visual Studio Freaking 2017 and still no freaking XAML intellisense for freaking Xamarin.
Freaking spent more than one hour searching for a freaking fix in vain. Might as well have used that freaking hour and learn the whole freaking Xamarin.Forms XAML vocabulary. This shit sucks.

Microsoft has released Visual Studio 2019 version 16.6 with a new IntelliSense Linter to help C++ developers efficiently clean up code.
The tool IntelliSense checks code on the go, using squiggly lines to highlight problems and Lightbulb actions for suggested fixes.
The feature can be enabled in Visual Studio 2019 version 16.6 from the Preview Features within the Tools > Options menu.

I was assigned to maintain a legacy project today. I downloaded the source code, configured the database server and imported the project in visual Studio. For a tiny, blissful fraction of a second, I expected everything to work on the first try.

Just Installed visual studio 2017 haven't used it yet but am already impressed by the installation time for the first time I have visual studio install at less than 30 minutes considering I was installing the whole xamarin package too.

Visual Studio and its compatibility with Linux applications.
I don't know if I'm the only one, but this is my setup:
- Visual Studio 2017 on Windows 10
- Ubuntu 18.04 subsystem on Windows
I just can't do any Linux coding in Visual Studio... it is using my subsystem as a Remote Compiler and debugger, and a simple Hello World program does build and run successfully, but EVERY SINGLE LINE HAS ERRORS! It can't find stdio.h! Not a single include file works! They get auto-completed so it knows where the files are, but apparently opening them to see all the methods is too much for Visual Studio! I'd say the problem has something to do with IntelliSense since only inside the IDE my code has errors, compiling (which happens on the subsystem) works like a charm.2 -
The service hooks at Visual Studio Team Service are a mess. A new subscription for every single event. Really?
Is it that hard to add an "everything" field? Instead I can now add 25 events one by one - for every project. -

Visual Studio is the worst. Ever. I was about a half hour digging into debugging my code, and I was about 8 layers deep into the API, with breakpoints to anchor me to each level. With no warning, Visual Studio crashed and I lost all my breakpoints, and I didn't know which file I left off in. I had to completely restart the debugging process. Visual Studio deserves to burn...4

I, I don’t even know how to search this... when I run an app from Visual Studio in IE (cancer, I know it’s a long story and above my head) my kerning is a mess. When I publish the same app to the dev server, it’s fine. The kerning appears to be the only thing messed up.3

I enjoy Visual Studio, but the installer is GARBAGE.
My install of 2017 didn't come with a certain package, so I go to the installer to add it. Thing constantly fails with "could not find file" in the txt log. Decided I might as well update studio while I'm here. Turns out I had python packages for it too, since during this update python decided to have a fit in another project because modules and pylint suddenly disappeared.

I would consider myself a Jedi Knight when it comes to using Visual Studio, but has anybody done any work that sounds like this description? I don't think I've ever wrote code that integrated systems like this.. I'll certainly ask for more information but I'm always surprised by the experience this community has and wanted to see if someone can scare me away from this

Visual studio. The lockups are incredibly annoying, the codebase's dependency on its toolset is worrying, and the inability for me to customize it deeply conflicts with how I work as a developer. It costs so much and yet the man hour cost of moving our codebase out of it is way more, so we are trapped

A couple of months ago I bought a two year licence for PHPStorm but shortly after I started this new job as React Web developper and everyone in my new team has been using Visual Studio Code with a specific set of plugins and settings which make I my premium IDE useless.

I have been struggling with schema compare and editing anything SQL related in Visual Studio for a couple of weeks now. Cursor constantly flickering, can't click on anything, and actually running the compare results in Visual Studio disappearing in puff of smoke.
I'd put it down to an update, but then this week's update didn't fix it.
Turns out it is a "feature" that Microsoft has been refusing to fix for over a year now, where none of the SQL stuff in VS works properly on a 4k external monitor. And of course I only started trying to use that stuff on my 4k monitor since I have been working from home.
Dragging VS across to the laptop screen solves the problem (and is the Microsoft fix), but I think I now need to visit the optician to get new glasses to see WTF is going on. -
When you open an access db in visual studio so you can do sql querys with out the annoying access interface and then i realize visual studio uses the same interface as access except its worse *-*3

I came across an issue with Visual Studio 2017. I'm unable to collapse multiline comments, there is no - sign in front of it like with code blocks.
At home it is no issue and I can do this without problems.
Ive looked online and all I can find is people not being able to collapse comments in VS Code. And people who want to collapse everything but the comments, but the comments do get collapsed.
Is it a setting I cannot find?2 -

But when you try to use it under C++, it looks like complete garbage and then you notice the theme was last updated 8 years ago and didn't supported C++ from the start.

Visual Studio is a fucking shitheap of an IDE and everyone who worked on it should be fucking incinerated.
I've been trying to get Unity to build my game for about a fucking hour and a half now, only to realize that it was a warning from a script that was causing it to fall flat on it's face.
So I deleted the script because it was a shitty script anyways, not much was being lost here, and I started building the game, and lo and behold, it was actually fucking doing something.
I went to go get a drink, only to come back to see that this stupid fucking engine gave me yet ANOTHER error that wasn't even from a script anywhere in my game's files.
It was fucking Visual Studio. It didn't even give me that concise of a fucking error, just "this file doesn't exist" or whatever hypercomplex bullshit it spat out at me.
So, I took to google, and found that I should open the solution file hidden within the uncompleted build, and upon doing so Visual Studio told me it needed to install some more shit in order to do so.
I decided to let it do it's thing, and you wanna know what the real kicker is?
I started writing this rant when it was at 25%.
I had started talking to my friend about how absolutely fucking garbage and slow this IDE is at around the point where it started downloading. It took fifteen fucking minutes for it to get to 25%.
I could uninstall and reinstall both Destiny 2 and Killing Floor 2, twice, in the time takes for this shitty fucking program to install its tumor of an update onto my system.
FUCK Visual Studio.
Fuck the person who conceived the idea of it.
And fuck every single person who supports it.
Every single person that thinks this fucking anathema of an IDE was a good idea should be incinerated.12 -
So I'm repairing Visual Studio because it's behaving differently. Been waiting for it to complete for more than 5 hours now. Hope we'll have a better internet connection1

In Visual Studio 2017, when an error occurs and you hover your cursor over it, you cannot copy the fucking error to do a Google Search. Who was the idiot that didn't think this through?
The ONLY way is to go to the separate Error List in the bottom, and even then I can only copy all or nothing.
