Our university syllabus is so outdated, we are forced to do C programs in TurboC.
So we install Dosbox on Windows 8 machines...

I was trying to fix my computer illiterate sisters computer, then I found out that there were two anti-virus programs that tried to delete each other.
When trying to delete the software I found out that the system admin does not have permission to use administrator rights at all. So in frustration I copied any valuable files, and reinstalled the entire OS.
Sometimes I wonder how people end up in these situations. She had 4 different anti-virus programs and still ended up getting multiple viruses! xD7 -
Uninstalling literally everything in my laptop including IDEs and tools. It summed up to 94 programs.
I then wrote a simple C# console app that automates the process.
It is running 28/94 currently.

Removes stubborn programs? Oh by 'stubborn' you mean the kind of programs where i click on the X on a window and the default button on the confirmation dialog isn't the one that closes the window but instead I have to click on 'cancel'? Yeah I fucking hate those programs too.

Programs are like humans. First you need to do baby steps and make it work like you want it, and teach it how to work. Then after the release the youth brings a lot of bugs and swearing. Finally it's grown up and can handle itself. Then it gets old and no one are so attracted to it anymore. It rests in peace on a old storage drive, and gets replaced by a new generation. 👶🏼👦🏽👨🏽👴🏽1

Do not change username in win10.
Messes up ownership.
Ex) You have set your username as Loren. Used computer for a while. Installed bunch of programs.
Then you change your u.c to Ipsum. Some installed programs adapt to new u.c. others dont. New programs set the installation folder to either c://Loren or c://Ipsum making chaos.
Then the computer gets messed up.

I always feel inspired by programming when I create some algorithms or programs which I can use when I need to.
Small utilities and command line programs r what I make at times... and I also enjoy trying to implement them awesome algorithms 😍
However, most inspiration I get is from looking at C code though ( especially the Linux kernel... that code is SO clean 😍😍 )2 -

- Played with and learned Scratch
- Learned some Python, made some weird little programs
- Learned C, using two good books: K&R C and Zed Shaw's "Learn C the Hard Way" (back when it was still in development and was free to read on the internet)
- Made LOTS of programs in C
- Came back to Python when I wanted to learn network programming
- Learned some Racket/Lisp, Bash scripting along the way
- Now I use all of the above, minus Scratch -

Who else hates Teams here? I really think it's one of the worst programs I have to use from time time. It's full of overly complicated features and bad UX design. Slack is soooo much better and more user-friendly.7

Here's my idea. In light of all the efforts to teach kids how to do programming, why not start with an introduction to discrete mathematics instead? From a lot of the programs I've seen, the kids are taught different structures such as if else, while, and for loops, but they don't attempt to start teaching them about recursive methods or even other structures such as linked lists, queues, dequeues, binary trees, heaps, different sorts, and other things. Am I just not looking deep enough into those programs? Or are the creators of these programs not wishing to cover those things because they feel like children wouldn't be able to comprehend such things?4

I had literally JUST learned to code, after completing an online course. I had played around making some tiny C# programs was looking for my first Junior job. A recruiter got in touch and to him I sounded like I knew what I was talking about. So he contacted the employer, called me back me later on and said that the employer wanted to see some sample code of mine.
"Sure!" I said eagerly and pasted my programs into an email. My two programs were probably about 20 lines of code in total - both Console apps. One was a stopwatch which I "hadn't quite got working yet", the other a Quadratic Equation solver.
The response came back that I was "too Junior for the position".
I know we all have to start somewhere, but I painfully cringe when I think about this employer and probably alll the devs there crowding around his monitor, pissing themselves at my tiny programs.3 -

A word of advice to any new Arch user: don't use lxdm for your display manager. It's utter shit. The package hijacks the symlink of any other DM when you install it, and it refocuses the DM on a 5 second loop while it's running, making it a pain in the ass to use a VT. LightDM was broken temporarily so I had to install it, but frankly, I don't ever want to touch thiis piece of software again.4

For all things, for all men, that a man compliments a thing does not imply that this man at least attempts to understand this thing. However, for all men, that a man criticises a thing implies that this man at least attempts to understand this thing.
For all computer programs, that a computer program is terrible implies that scrapping the current implementation of this computer program and beginning anew may be the best method of fixing this computer program.
With few exceptions, for all programming languages $l$, given sufficient effort, $l$ source code can be human-readable.
The UNIX philosophy never became outdated.
For all computer programs $p$, $p$ should be written sufficiently well that the author of $p$ can be prideful of $p$.
For all computer programs $p$, a specification for $p$ should be written before $p$ is created.
For all good computer programs, a good computer program can run on terrible hardware.
Every clock cycle is valuable.8 -

Hi I just joined this great Community and here is my thoughts about programming tap "++" if you agree if not then change your mind.
For me programming is like becoming wizard of next generation. Like wizard you can control or create anything because in future you will find electronics containing programs written by a wizard (programmer). We are not people who can repair computer but greater then that because a pc is just a box without programs (software)
You are reading this article because you loves challenges and you are hard working too.1 -
To some of us, writing computer programs is a fascinating game. A program is a building of thought. It is cost less to build, it is weightless, and it grows easily under our typing hands.

*Overheard at the train station*
"So... if you make programs you're a programmer. But if you make computers you're a computerer?" -
Not really a rant, but an observation. As programmers we get to create realities for computers through programs. There are some fundamentals, like IO, memory, disk...but the creative power is enormous.2

me: you know you don't have to install all those common programs manually every time you get a new computer from IT, use Ninite.
college: oh I'll definitely check that out
*continues installing manually*1 -
Doing MCA from a distance learning university(like IGNOU) in India is a joke. In my first sem I wrote some programs in C for considerably less number of lines as I had some experience with newer techniques.
I almost failed!1 -
When your Chromebook/Crouton starts complaining about lack of available memory and uninstalling programs isn't helping and the "shadow vault" has consumed everything, so you just say "fuck it" and Powerwash the whole thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
My browser tabs in firefox and chrome crashes frequently in ubuntu? Is there any issue with the memory module, because other programs also show segmentation fault in the crash logs?3
-
Today i try to Reprogram something from 1995 because my grandma got an pc update from Xp to win10 and one of her main programs don't work there
Wish me luck6 -
Worst documentation I have ever dealt with is my own. I have gone back to programs, looked at it, and went, what the heck is even this. I've broken business critical programs just because I didn't know the extent of what I was changing. I've gotten better, because of events like that. OMG!!!!
-
In school, our c++ teacher gave an list of programs we had to do in lab that annual session,i was excited about learning programming so i strtrd reading my c++ book & completed all those programs in less than a month......
-
So looking to start learning C++ again. Anyone have any simple programs for me to look at? (The simpler the better, I don't remember anything.)1
-
Reinstalled my computer, installed needed programs, made a system image.
I feel sooooo good right now. -
developing some programs for a new client to generate fractal images. any suggestions on programming languages I should use? my first instinct was Python.4
-
Anyone hit the pitfall of not following K.I.S.S.? I have found that programs that are really simple, I make complicated.
And then that mindset goes to the complicated programs no problem. But I stare at the program for a while, because I just know it can't be that simple, but it is.2 -
My worst common practice:
I do almost everything as root. Even programs which tell me not to run as root, I do run them as root.
What are yours?1 -
Recovering a Raid 1 EXT4 disk to a ZFS disk. Thank god for Adobe programs and their multi million file-based caching files.
recovery_time.add(4.hours) -
I make programs for a client and ask for what he wants in it specifically. I make the programs how he tells me and when I get to something I have to decide on I just come up with a nice way of doing it(in my opinion). I finish the project and show it to the client and he gets all pissy saying to change how I did something. Of course that something was something I had to decide on and he didn't tell me how to do. 😐

And so begins week 3 of 5 without full computer access. I'm able to do some research needed but I'm still very limited. The only programs I can use are IE11, and the three basic MS Office programs. Oh well... at least I'm still getting paid by the hour1
-
Fucking hell, using Android studio and chrome Dev tools at the same time is a pain. You'd think Google would have their shit sorted when it came to sharing adb with their own programs.
-
Any program or app that let's you see how powerful a computer you need based on the programs you want to run?8
-
I am very excited about new Debian 9 so i decide to move definitely on linux from windows. What programs do you recommend? ( i am preparing for a sysadmin career). Any recommandation is welcome. Thank you!3
-
The concept of personal assistant programs is really starting to take off, and I'm super excited to see what is going to happen in the future3
-
Somebody write more and more ugly / incomprehensible lines of code for 1-2 beautiful line.
But the bug is always in ugly code.
I hate these programmers, I hate these programs!1 -
I am not a fan of programs that want to store their libraries in your home directory. It's alright if they store it in a hidden folder at least. I like my home directory to be nice and clean~~3

I'm finally learning to incorporate multiple desktops into my workflow. So far, I like how it segregates my social programs from my web browsers from my code applications.1 -
Where can I upload some of my projects on internet (just want to show my codes in public and get some valuable advise)?
I am not that old in programming to make really complex programs but I had build some projects so, i want to upload them ;-)5 -
i was thinking i should kill myself if AI can design websites and write programs in the future.
so i dont have much time, what is the best way to commit suicide?5 -
“A computer language is not just a way of getting a computer to perform operations but rather that it is a novel formal medium for expressing ideas about methodology. Thus, programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines [including the human] to execute.” (The Structure and Interpretation of a Computer Programs, 1985)
“If you try to make something beautiful, it is often ugly. If you try to make something useful, it is often beautiful.” -Mr. OSCAR WILDE -
Hello everyone!I need to see some opinion you guys might have.
I'm a self-taught everything about Computer, I've been trying to learn to develop software and games for a while now, was able to gather some information in a bunch of directions, but never was able be able to ACTUALLY develop anything by myself without the help of a step by step guide. Which stop me from program things and not copy pasta. I know that i seem to like how C works, since it have less features that confuse me (IMO of course)
So my question is: What kind of small projects would you recommend me to do other than calculators to help me figure out how we actually program something?
PS: I know python, C, a little bit of C++ and C#.11 -
How do you guys monitor programs on your servers?
For example, I have a raspberry pi zero w running raspbian (headless). On this pi, I have a bunch of discord bots and web scrapers running at the same time. My solution was to run them all from a bash file:
Python3 discordbot1.py &
Python3 discordbot2.py &
Python3 webscraper1.py &
Node webscraper2.js & etc.
Is there a better way I could be running these services? How is stuff like this usually done?7 -
Finally got Proton to run arbitrary programs with some tinkering. Works fairly well for running nigh anything I throw at it, even some random non-game programs. Might do this more often. (Next up: DXVK)10
-
It baffles me that although all they're doing is shuffling numbers around based on abstract descriptions of the target architecture and platform-specific behavior is completely out of the question, compilers are some of the least portable programs in active development.
-
Not writing enough utility programs for those occasions where you have no option but directly modify database tables in production.
-
So I have been recruited to do some IT ish work for a local business. I have been offered a couple of hundred bucks to take a set list of programs off of about 40 pcs. All windows. Sounds like the perfect job for a script, not my specialty. So what might be the best method? Using a batch script to CD to the respective directories and just DEL the folders for the target programs?5
-
I don't think that "code" should be used as a verb. A programmer 'writes' code or 'programs' something. I'd rather not be called a "coder." Unless it's Halloween and I'm dressed up as a brogrammer.3
-
Grr! Why is my new iMac taking forever to start up programs and load websites? I feel like it should be faster than this!9
-
What’s your guys thoughts on people calling Scratch and other block coding programs coding and calling themselves coders or programmers for just knowing scratch.7
-
I hate Lucky Patcher. Also Game Guardians. People are using these programs to hack my mobile game, turn off ads and get all inapp purchases for free :(13
-
Why do so many different programs have so many different dependencies...I mean can't everything coexist everywhere.
Spent 2 days on aws only to realize the solution is to switch to GCP. I mean what?1 -
Which moron had the idea to name the register containing the address of the current instruction PROGRAM COUNTER? It fucking doesn't count programs, it points to an instruction.6
-
Hi everyone,
Writing code is exercise in precision. Since there are programs like sublime text3 / emmet
Do you recommend to use those as they they generate the code?3 -
I keep getting emails from my programming teacher to "do more challenge programs!" Outside of the homework where I already have to do this shit
I think I'm gonna take this weekend to do the whole workbook they provided and see what they say then. Probably that I'm not learning properly.
I don't dislike this form of practical learning. I'm sure it's very representative of work programming, because the biggest challenge of these programs is mainly the bugs VB Net provides.. -
There's a IT company I know that uses low level languages to develop, mainly to increase the efficiency of their programs. But it's rumor.
But would it be actually true? running algo or something on a ultra-modern pc? -
If you put a million jokes at a million keyboards, one of them will eventually write a java program.
The rest of them will write Perl programs. -
Man, programs were fascinating, one day when I was (I think) seven years old, I googled how to make a program, I found something called neobook (anyone else?), and the rest was history.
-
Trying to run the examples of Boost networking in two programs with QtCreator. Same Qmake file, one program compile, the other has a linker error. Why?????2
-
I was installing the .NET framework so I could run DSIII, but after installing it, it would still complain and not run. So I got a different version and... still nothing. Then I tried to fucking uninstall it, but it wasn't it the installed programs, so I got an utility that was supposed to uninstall it, but then the installer said it was already installed. So I deleted to actual files manually and even then it wouldn't bloody reinstall. Except that programs that were working before, just stopped working.
At which point I just reinstalled fucking windows.3 -
i had this crazy dream that there's a code ghost that erases the blocks of code i wrote and produces bugs to my programs... damn this is the first time i got really scared.
-
I was adding/removing some programs on os x, and accidentally did sudo rm -rf /usr/local ... now guess who is staying all night formating and reinstalling everything? OS X should really ask in such cases..3
-
Ok I know this is stupid question and not rant, but I just finished school and need to go to the high school and want do build some projects. So I'm pretty good with HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQLI, and in high school I want to learn python. I already know some stuff with python I built programs for 'hacking' but I don't know what programs do I need to learn to build if I want to work somewhere... Sorry if my English is bad.. :)9

To all devs who do side work here-
How do you deal with legal issues e.g ensuring that your apps and programs that you developed after working hours belong to you and not to your employer?5 -
class post
{
public string type = "question";
public string info =
"I made a Notification Drawer for pc. It checks a file every 0.01 second. If that file contains a specific line of code, the notification drawer shows a notification. This way I can make other programs to be able to send notifications.";
public string question = "Is there an easier / better way to make 2 or more programs communicate?"
}8 -
"I have a lot of experience with 'Programs'."

Aways wondered how developers are different from programmers. Developers write programs and combine them together to develop an application. It Isn’t true?13
-
Artsy friend asked me to make a program to auto add images from folder and layout in refBoard.
Spend time figuring out how the author scales images and setting the XML up. Post wip online and someone asked why not use pureRef... Does all that stuff and more built in...
Thankfully only spent a few hours on it heh... -
So since as programmers languages are nothing but notation why do we even bother, and why not just make lisp a unified notation for all programs?35

I've made an opensource project, some of you guys might find it useful. Simple, lightweight and fast tool/server that allows you to execute scripts/programs on incoming webhooks. Check it out at https://github.com/adnanh/webhook -
Has anyone heard about University of Essex and their part-time online programs - PGCert, PGDip and Masters degrees for Computer Science?7

So a the noob I am, I have never coupled my programs with a GUI and only doing console apps, so I wanted to ask you; when making programs, methods and whatever, how do I link these methods to areas in a GUI to make a "proper" application for let's say windows? Any good places to go for ideas and whag framework is recommended?9

Which app can i use to run cp in Android??
In many apps i cant make the programs like enter a number for input and all☹5 -
Protip: SSDs will help your PC boot up and run programs faster. If your computer doesnt have an SSD, you can always add one or two later.18

Open Ye Olde Dev Shoppe, where we hand-code artisian programs that AI could make, except slower, and for twice the price. And where we also serve coffee made by a human barista.

Where should i go to grad school? Im looking for software engineering or machine learning masters programs1

Plz give a suggestion
I want a laptop to develop programs with swift and Xcode.
I am considering MacBook Pro 13" 2012 non retina 4gb ram,500gb internal memory7 -
Recently noticed lots of people have just become interested in post-graduation CE programs and I can't believe how dumb they are. They think it's gonna do some magic in their career.2

Mobile apps. They're little programs that have to run in constricted environments. I find it challenging to write something that needs to perform well, and at the same time be as efficient as possible with its very limited resources.
