Get ready for the first ever devRant live stream event! @trogus and I will be making an exciting announcement/launch live on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/devrantapp) this Wednesday (October 4th) at 9pm EDT. After the announcement we will also take some questions from devRant users who are watching. The questions can be about the announcement or anything devRant-related in general. We hope to get some fun questions so feel free to ask anything you want.
We look forward to having some fun with our first live stream! If you can't make it, don't worry, the replay will be available on YouTube and we'll likely do some more streams in the future. Please let me know if you have any questions and we hope many of you can join us!
Edit: the stream will be available here once it begins tomorrow: https://youtube.com/watch/... I will also post another announcement rant when we go live!56
I wanted to post a note on devRant community etiquette and rule-breaking behavior we’ve been seeing lately to make clear it will not be tolerated. This is pretty much a rehash of this rant, https://devrant.com/rants/609739/... and also our official rules which I highly encourage people to read: https://devrant.com/rules
I’ve noticed an influx of a select group of members, mostly older users, expressing a distain towards other users or declaring content they dislike “shouldn’t be posted”, “please stop”, etc. If you find yourself about to post that, as per our rules, please don’t. It blatantly violates our rules and we are going to start cracking down on it much more. Whether you have 30k+ points or 10, we will apply the rules fairly to everyone and not give breaks to specific people, which admittedly I’ve done in the past.
If we see this behavior in rants/comments first we will give a warning (and the rant/comment will be deleted) and the next offense is a ban.
A valid question (even though I’ve answered it before) might be why does this need to be a rule? Simply put, it’s a rule for a number of reasons: posts like described try to inflict one’s will upon the entire community (even though we have a Democrat voting process...), they create confusion (almost every time they try to sound official, ex. “Stop doing this”), and beyond those two main reasons, they literally accomplish nothing because they offer no constructive methods of achieving what’s being requested, and only a fraction of the community will actually see it.
Here’s an example of what’s not allowed and what is allowed:
- Allowed: posting an issue on our GitHub issue tracker saying “I really dislike seeing this type of rant in my algo feed, here’s some ideas I have to improve the algo and add more personalization so I can see what I want.”
- Allowed: posting on GitHub issue tracker: “I found this awesome image similarly algo that I think can improve the ‘repost check feature’ - you guys should check it out and see if it might be good”
- Not allowed: “Omg stop shitposting windows update rants and Linux rants I hate them. Go post this type of rant because that’s what everyone really wants to see.”
One is constructive an the other is merely an opinion expressed as an enforcement of a self-made rule on the community and tries to tell other people how they should use devRant.
I cringe when people tell others how to use devRant because without fail when I see those posts, I go through that person’s rant/comment history and I nearly always see them using devRant in some kind of way I disagree with or isn’t exactly what I like to see. But that’s OK. I understand I’m not going to enjoy everything posted and I’m also not going to agree with everything posted. But I think it’s fair for those same people to then lecture on what isn’t appropriate to post on devRant, and it’s even more silly when their posts are sometimes irrelevant to development and the posts they are complaining about are relevant.
In the end, based on the large majority of feedback we get, we want to make devRant a place where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves and doesn’t have to think about possibly getting ridiculed every time they post and that don’t have people trying to dictate what kind of ideas they are allowed to post. We also realize there’s types of content people don’t enjoy, but telling others not to post it is not the solution. We will soon be launching post type filters that will make filtering rants by post type possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for reading.64
So i was playing around with terminal apps in node.js a few weeks ago and made a CLI version of devrant. Images get converted to ascii just for fun. This is about was far as it goes for me though - anyone want to take it over? (The code is shit - this was a midnight proof of concept). Currently there's pretty much just the rant listings, the login works too but I think @dfox would need to approve it's use.
Next script I'm writing is going to be a terminal rant posting tool so I can rant from my server 😉
$ rant -m "fml" -f ~/screenshot.jpg -t "lol"20
Reading devRant feed is so fucking hard nowadays. Every other rant is about Windows rebooting, Google being evil, Quantum beating Chrome, M$ users being cunts and all these fanboy shits.
Fucking hell. Write some actual code and rant about some solid problems rather than being a stupid fanboy.12
Found a post about a devrant waifu, so I decided to give my take on it based on @caramelCase's character33
I'm late to work
...Because I'm still eating breakfast
...Because I'm browsing devRant
... And writing a rant about being late to work
... Which remind me...2
So my girlfriend (non techie) just saw my rant about how I'd give her a baby if she knew how to close vim in a proper way (she saw me on devRant, asked me to show it and read my rants) and so I showed her vim so she'd get the joke.
I than told her, how it worked and such so she'd see how it's not a regular text editor and told her to try and quit it, and to my amazement, she did!
Guess she's a keeper :')12
Had lunch with my girlfriend today. After we had eaten I was just browsing Devrant and she (without looking at what I was doing) she said "Let's go, you can rant about coding somewhere else".7
Me: Hey Google, open devrant
Google: Results for dev brand
Me: open devrant
Google: Results for dev hand
Me: No! open "dev" "rant"
Google: Results of some dude named Dev Randhawa
Me: Dammit open devrant
Google: Dewa rent? Electricity bill paying sites of some town called dewa.
Me: Open d.e.v.r.a.n.t
Google: Opens Google play song from Kevin Durant.
Me: gives up and listens to Kevin Durant sing some shit about LeBron James.11
I'm stuck between 2 options:
1) Rant about my problems
2) Share DevRant with colleagues
Am I the only one with this problem? 😂16
Android : devRant is consuming too much power in background
Me : Say what ??
A : I said devRant is consuming too much pow.................
M : Who the fuck told you to rant about it
*Turns the phone off
No one speaks ill of devRant and lives long enough to tell about it.5
-"Okay dad, i saw your previous rant on devRant about android studio. So let Me show you how its done!"
Future dev (:2
This is how my day has gone so far:
1. In car, see advert about hackathon
2. Look it up, see tickets go on sale in 30mins
3. Read more about hackathon, apparently tickets go within minutes
4. Get tickets, print
5. Printer out of ink
6. Accidentally deleted ticket, can't reprint
7. No more tickets left so can't get another
8. Spend hours with data recovery tools
9. Remember recycle bin. Reprint ticket
11. Rant on devRant11
Wait, so you're telling me I have an avenue to rant about my career AND I can receive free stickers while doing so... Go DevRant!!!3
If I knew about the '++' before subscribing on devRant, I would have called myself 'C' so the text would be
C ++'d your rant!12
devRant is a place to rant. Not a journal of best practices.
Can I just rant without giving a long winded backstory?
Do I have to explain myself to prevent people from commenting that the problem must be me?
If you read a rant, and you can't relate to it sympathetically.
Move along! That rant is not for you!
When people are trying to vent no one wants to see your snippy little comment about how 'unprofessional' they are being.8
At the end of our first podcast (https://devrant.io/podcasts/...) we gave a hint about the featured guest on our second episode. Now, it's time to announce this guest!
For the next episode of The devRant Podcast, we're fortunate enough to welcome David Heinemeier Hansson, also commonly known as DHH!! (http://david.heinemeierhansson.com/) David is the creator of Ruby on Rails and founder/CTO of Basecamp/37signals (project management tool), and a best-selling author know for titles like "Rework." He also drives race cars. We're extremely excited that we'll have the change to interview him as our second featured guest.
Like last time, it's time to take questions from the devRant community! If you have a question you'd like us to ask David, please add it as a comment on this rant or you can email me (email@example.com). Thanks everyone!7
Best thing about devRant is that if I rant here, I don't need to look like a jaded sociopath on Facebook any more. 😉2
I had genuinely forgotten devRant had a light theme until I saw a rant about it. I went into settings and turned it on for about four seconds, screamed "MY EYES" and rejoined the dark side.4
Can we just talk about how generous the founders of devRant are? They gave us 5000 characters per post to rant. That's just absolutely insane.4
How do you politely tell someone that constant conversations about progress slow down progress?
Not only do I have to stop for 30mins to explain what things I've changed, but now I have to rant about it on devrant.3
I'm proud to announce a new project made by myself and @thejohnhoffer, that started on devrant.
We started collaborating after I made a rant about machine learning and, since then we've been working hard on a plain language blog that simplifies machine learning concepts.
We call it learn-blog.
Check it out at ironman5366.github.io/learn-blog15
Tons of people rant about how bad PHP is on devRant.
devRant's is built using PHP.
Funnny thing happened today, my gf took my phone and started scrolling through recent apps, suddenly she sees devRant app and says, "What is this app? Is it the place your rant about me?"
All because her pet name is Dev! #DevRant15
After the backlash I received from some devRant users about my text formatting, here is a properly formatted, and properly punctuated rant.
You see... It's boring.12
I am on DevRant for quite a while now and I really enjoy it here. The overall atmosphere is great, as well as the community. (Yes, that includes you!)
Since I came here I've learned some very valuable lessons regarding work (conditions), annoying coworkers and programming itself. I like to think of DevRant as a huge ball of experience by very talented people, as well as a great place for discussions about a topic we all love: code. But lately I am seeing more and more memes on here, with titles like "I think everybody know this", "I think everybody can relate" and "Soo true". Those posts have no value at all and are (most of the time) reposted from 9gag or similar networks. Sometimes those "rants" don't even have anything to do with devs anymore, but are only here to farm ++'es. In the beginning I really enjoyed funny "rants", but now the majority of them just annoy me. It becomes especially annoying when you see the same meme three times in 15 minutes.
I'd be in for some kind of DevFun section, where everybody is able to post his or hers jokes/memes/etc, but the current situation just really gets on my nerves.
I hope that I am not the only one who thinks like that, because I really feel uncomfortable ranting about something I actually love.
How do people just go about deleting databases when they don't mean to?
"Ah, a database!"
*Flaps hands at the keyboard until something happens*
"Oops, I deleted the database :/"
(*Posts a rant about accidentally deleting the database on devRant*)
- devRant TOR rant! -
There is a recent post that just basically says 'fuck TOR' and it catches unfortunate amount of attention in the wrong way and many people seem to aggree with that, so it's about time I rant about a rant!
First of all, TOR never promised encryption. It's just used as an anonymizer tool which will get your request through its nodes and to the original destination it's supposed to arrive at.
Let's assume you're logging in over an unencrypted connection over TOR and your login information was stolen because of a bad exit node. Is your privacy now under threat? Even then, no! Unless of course you had decided to use your personal information for that login data!
And what does that even have to do with the US government having funded this project even if it's 100%? Are we all conspiracy theorists now?
Let's please stop the spread of bs and fear mongering so that we can talk about actual threats and attack vectors on the TOR network. Because we really don't have any other reliable means to stop a widely implemented censorship.12
I envy the developers of devrant.
They can use actual technical terms for the features without giving a damn if the user gets it or not.4
As most of you already know, the mentioned users in a rant don't receive a notification so you have to mention them again in a comment.
After a suggestion of @Cozyplanes I decided to implement a feature that make this automatic.
Just check the box and forget about it.
It will be available soon in the next update of devRant unofficial UWP!7
So if @dfox and @trogus are the devs who make devRant... And if they want to rant about dev stuff... Does that mean they could then rant about devRant on devRant?6
I love how DevRant is evolving!
It started only to rant.
Now people can make questions, celebrate accomplishments, talk about their problems, memes, etc...
Deamn! I'm loving DevRant more and more! 🤗7
:: *joins devRant to rant about everything*
:: *everything I want to complain about is on the front page*
:: *sighs in relief*1
!dev !rant but a whole lotta devRant
After talking to a friend about joining devRant++ he said it was a path he could not follow. This is him soon2
Sadly to say, but devrant is slowly moving away from dev part of its name, even rant part.
More I see posts about this tech sucks vs that tech sucks. That being annoying, would be fine, not for me, but fine.
The worse part are the memes. Repost memes, not funny, though, maybe funny to some, still no effort reposts.
Even worse are posts that have nothing to do with dev. Like recent post about soldiers and gay people (maybe you saw it). Why the hell post it here?
Going down are the ++ beggers, sadly I see even more of them.
Yes I understand I can just leave this platform.
I just wanted to express these mixed feelings I have been getting for my once favorite place to read about other devs experience.17
I'm torn between telling my co-workers about devRant or not telling them so I can rant about work.4
DEVRANT CRASHED AND MY RANT IS GONE! I'M NOT A HAPPY MISH.
To be brief, I just remembered how my father used to smash my phone to the ground when he was angry about it.
Everytime he sees me using it. Smash!
I once made a Facebook to make more friends since I didn't have much, and still don't. (I didn't use the app btw.) He saw my search history and was furious. (My parents don't permit me to have social media. They think devRant is a school thing.)
He smashed it to the ground saying I can never use Facebook again.
He did that to 3 phones.
Fortunately, he doesn't do that anymore. Mainly because I'm the one who helps him with computer stuff and searches for the emails he needs.16
just thought about it...
why not devrant rubber duckies?
(this might be proposed in some other comment/rant already, didnt check for it)6
I just travelled roughly 10 years back in time. How? By crossing the border from the Netherlands to Germany. My mobile connection jumped from constant 4G to H / Edge / no connection at all, The wifi, where present is slow af. And I can't pay by card anymore as I'm used to. And most of all: The loading speed of DevRant is so slow with this data connection that I wanna rant about it itself, but I can't, since I don't have any goddamn connection >_<48
I'M SO PROUD, I WROTE A FULLY-FUNCTIONAL JSON PARSER!
I used some data from the devRant API to test it :D
(There's a lot of useful tests in the devRant API like empty arrays, mixed arrays and objects, and nested objects)
Here's the devRant feed with one rant, parsed by Lua!
You can see the type of data (automatically parsed) before the name of the data, and you can see nested data represented by indentation.
The whole thing is about 200 lines of code, and as far as I can tell, is fully-featured.27
devRant rant pages are indexed by search engines. When I started using devRant, my username had my actual name. So when I searched myself on search engines, a couple of my rants/comments came up in the later pages in the search results. Some companies (ahem Google ahem) use this data to build your profile. I DO NOT like websites collecting my data and building my profile. But for some reason, I don't care about all that when I rant on devRant even though some of the information I post here can tell more about me than most of my other online information. I don't know why. Maybe at a later time, I can get myself to delete the info here.4
When you just saw a devrant, and remember you have a perfect picture to add to it that you've been holding onto for years, for just this very moment to post it, so you quickly look for the picture, and then you can't find the rant again !
The rant I saw was about excessive warning signs..
Reminded me of my then local library that was relocated and the architect didn't notice the floor level between two rooms was different so when they knocked two into one, this was the result..
I did suggest they simply put a ramp in, instead of spending a small fortune on signs!
But no, they went with the signs and I heard, had regular accidents involving people falling off the step still..6
DevRant is such a small world. I posted a story about someone I know in real life and she posted a rant about me too.
And it's good to be back here.9
Hello devRanters! A little while ago some ranters and I who are all passionate about FOSS/Linux decided to get together in a chatroom. Slowly more people are coming in but just wanted to post this in case any foss/linux liking people would like to join! I am not even sure if this is allowed on devRant (posting something like this) so if not, my apologies and I will remove the rant!
Keep in mind that the chat exists for people who are very keen on FOSS/Linux/security/privacy so no offense but it probably isn't the best place for people who don't like/care about that stuff :).53
<rant about devRant>
Can people please stop posting images stolen from someone else trying to get some points. I'm here to read rants and other interesting things you encounter while working with software development, not look at memes. Thank you.
</rant about devRant>12
@dfox How about a Devrant t-shirt feature?
Where you can enter the id of your favorite rant. Then it just prints the t-shirt with the Devrant logo and the text from the rant.
Would be awesome!4
It's 21:42. I had 1 month to write a report on my internship. Day after tomorrow is submission. I'm starting now.
I deleted Facebook Inc.'s products long time ago, deleted YouTube app, removed Quora account, put filters on suggestions for Stack Exchange networks, blocked Reddit, stopped Spotify, started Trello/Wunderlist/Evernote to organise thoughts, ForestApp and StayFocusd for controlled browsing, deleted Tumblr etc. All this just to focus on the report and get it done as soon as possible.
Now I FOUND devRant! What the fuck world! Why!? I'm now ranting about issue on devRant with this rant. <- this sentence is a meta, if you didn't realise.9
So i just wanted to say thank you. Everyone on devrant.
It became a safe place for me to rant about stuff, getting feedback from awesome people and so much more. Also i learned some things on dR that making my (dev)life better!
Most important devrant is making me feel way better, when you read about people having the same struggles.
But not only the rants are making this awesome. Its every single one of you.
Thank you, stay awesome!3
How devrant changes me #1:
I'm a little bit more active on devrant since about a week. Improvement so far:
1. I spent only 20% of the time on Facebook i usually do
2. I really enjoy the nice community
3. I even more enjoy that i notice there are more "dudes like me" :D i mean.. I'm tired of telling my "normal" friends how happy i am because i wrote some awesome code and just get a "eeeh.. Nice." back because they dont understand and often dont even try to understand whats so special for me.
4. Even if my english is still kinda bad, i notice that i get better with every rant i post. I mean.. That post cost me about 3 min. I swear 7 days ago it would have cost me minimum 7 minutes to get this lines down :)
Thanks devrant :)5
I hate how people complain when someone posts a !rant, but then also complain about legitimate rants. "wow, you were angry in that one! Why the all caps?" WHY THE FUCK NOT? This is devRant, where we rant about things. If someone is genuinely pissed off about something, then they should be able to come here and express their anger! If we use all caps, then we're extremely pissed! There's nothing wrong with that! If windows started an update in the middle of a project, you have all rights to complain about it here. Let us rant in peace!2
after using devRant for about 4 days... i absolutely love it!
bye reddit, on mobile.
Rant about devRant.
I hate to see two types of posts:
1. “Haha, i added a WordPress existing theme and charged customer XXXX EUR”, “Idiot customer, I had cross platform app and I charged for each platform”, “lol, they wanted to negotiate the payment, I connected to backdoor and shutdown down their servers”
2. “Why does customer not trust our estimates?” “I told him he does not need to worry about this comparability”, “they are asking about security of the hardened server, are they nuts?
First you treat customers dishonestly and then expect them to trust you and rely on your expertise. Before you constantly complain about the customers - look at yourself guys.10
Hi guys, this is my first rant so bear with me..
Stupid Indian fucking institutes doesn't give a shit about the things we learn in the institute. This curriculum is like from the 90's. I learnt NodeJS recently and I thought wow a new concept, not even my professor knows about it. I must be on top of the world or at least any way near it and then I see these video tutorials on the internet which are posted 2 years ago. OH MY GOD!! The thing is that my department's HOD doesn't know about that and the funny thing is that I'm doing a project under him "SECURITY OF WEB APPLICATIONS" and the only thing he knows is PHP. And FYI I'm not studying in an institute which is oblivious to the outside world. It's called an NIT, an institute of national fucking importance. At the end, I blame myself though. I should have been on myself not being completely dependent on the professors for knowledge.
I could fill the entire text area with the rant.
But then people will start ranting about the rant.
I will be posting more Indian-devRant soon so.. peace till then.
( I bet they don't know about Git/Github too)24
I don't want no sticker and no stressball, i just want to read some dev rants and design my devRant avatar3
!rant (maybe somewhat drunk)
I'm a moderate gamer, and I like online gaming (battlefront, rocket league, that kind of stuff). And I can say that from all online communities i've seen, devRant is by far the less toxic one, being actually extremely nice.
Most dev communities i've been part of are extremely competitive, but devRant is all about sharing and caring.
A big bravo to you all, and thanks!6
I've come on here three times to rant about an issue, only to figure out the solution whilst typing. Thanks, devRant!4
Back in the days DevRant used to be a small community. A rant would be seen by all, with a higher chance of marking the stress ball incentive target.
Now, those upvotes are distributed among many more users who have the privilege of upvoting to what they find more interesting.
However, this is not a rant about who has a better chance of winning a stress ball; it's about feeling proud how this community grew so healthy, and tailor made for developers!! :)
Kudos! I love this community7
A wild Devrant bot has appeared!
Tired of forgetting about a rant? Don't worry, RemindMe is here!
How to use it?
RemindMe will remind you about the rant you mentioned it on after the time you specified
@dfox created devrant to rant and after creating it he felt so satisfied by the appreciation and community , that he left with nothing to rant about.3
I am still working on the devrant toolbox extension (for firefox and chrome).
This is how it looks in my browser (firefox). The colorset is "solarized light", but there will be dark modes also.
What do you think about the dual frame layout with the feed on the left and the rant on the right? Would you use that?11
I feel strange, because I don't have nothing to rant about... I work with awesome people, and my life is not so terrible... What the fuck I'm doing on devRant?
Uhm... maybe I'm the boss who everyone is ranting about...9
*sees a rant about how hot it is in Spa*
"OK Google, what's the current temperature in Spa?"
> devRant has crashed
Seems to happen a lot in Android 8.1 in particular by the way 🤔6
Since I joined DevRant my productivity went down...
Well... Im not sure if I should be happy or sad about it.7
public void NoRant()
I have a small hobby.. T-Shirts.. I make them for myself sometimes, when I'm bored.. so.. I thought to myself.. If I don't get a T-shirt from devRant.. I'll make one myself))) I found myself making several designs.. Here's one example:
Hi, I'm new to devRant. That's perfect because I love to rant about everything.
So, let this be my first rant:
Apache Velocity + last minute rush + heatwave - climatisation = Hello Migraine my old friend...10
Wanted to ++ rant about that clicking devrant logo refreshes page. Now thanks to algo I can not find it... Sorry mate, no ++ for you4
today i show my new classmates devRant they were like whaaaaats thaaat ? ofcourse pretty cool site where is good colective and you can type rant and nobody will hate you like on FB
I dont think they will use it but at least i sayd them about it ;)2
Opened Devrant to say...
"Office is so hopeless that I am not even in mood to rant about all those stuff"
But saw a post that I had typed last time but never posted it....
Everyday, I am amazed at developers like those here on devRant. I look up at you in awe and admiration, always thinking about how awesome your life probably is, even though you rant about it sometimes. I want to be like many of you in the future.
Thank you for improving our lives with whatever you are doing. I feel like this doesn't get said enough.
Meanwhile, University sucks (failed exams), but I am expected to graduate with good grades. Sigh. I also feel like I'm not learning enough of those things that I need to become a good dev and rather overly complicated math which I'll never need in my later life.24
When you can't rant about the stupid shit at work because your fucking idiot coworkers are on devRant and you can't afford to lose the job quite yet...2
I used a devRant-themed presentation I had to give about myself to get my job. This was one of the slides3
Ranting about the fear that some of your colleagues may discover the existence of devRant and can discover your rant about him/her.5
I am currently working on my Master's thesis in the R&D department of a company that builds&sells mechanical appliances. Obviously a part of the thesis is outlining the various approaches.
Me: * Headphones on, browsing competitor's website for citeable content*
*Le boss approaches, starts looking at my screen*
B: Are you honestly preferring their approach over ours?!
M: *sets down headphones* What dou you mean?
B: *Begins rant about unfair competitors, how I dare consider defecting to a competitor*
M: Uhm.. I was just looking for sources so that i coukd write about different approaches...
B: Oh. Carry on then. *leaves*
M: *scratches head, opens devRant, begins typing*1
Hello DevRant! Time for my first rant. As the saying goes: Everyone should put his own house in order first. So why not rant about myself before i rant about others...
Dear past self next time be less an idiot and enter a database into the persistence.xml wich actually exisist so i don't waste a fucking hour or something like that, for looking what's wrong with my JDBC driver....
Learning something new can suck sometimes if you realize that you made a dumb mistake which prevents you from progress.
Just saw a thread about Global Reddit Meetup Day. Do we have one in devrant? If not, is it possible to have one? I know the user base is not comparable with reddit, but it would be fun meeting other local developers who rant too 😛8
Rant about social media in general, including devRant.
I enjoy interacting with like minded people. What I do not enjoy is the whole degradation of the conversation at hand. Sooner or later, someone takes something the wrong way, addresses something this social network was not meant to address (it's devRant not Facebook), and the audience has a multitude of English as a #(rd/th/whatever) language human beings.
Accept that as the premise, and I think we could get along a lot better.
However commonly this fact is ignored. Understand the sentiment behind statements, not the statement itself. If any part of it is unclear, then request clarification.
Agree, disagree, civil debates one thing, but degrading the conversation to name calling or similar emotions only results in poor communication, useless emotions running high, and nothing gained.
I just saw an article on Fossbytes about devrant! Great to see it get recognition!
Not having anything to rant about because the job is great
Is this a devrant equivalent to first world problems?2
Wow! Amazing article today about our beloved devRant community on Forbes.com http://forbes.com/sites/...1
Guys if somebody here use Firefox(I know there are lot of you guys !!!) And you wanna to check devRant often but you hate to always open it close it and so on. Or you may wanna to get notified about new rant posts well why not give: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/... A try ? its awesome and i have posted about it long time ago so new comers may not know about this awesome addon so check it out . Also its developed by me !4
One thing I like about DevRant is , even when a rant fails miserably, dev's will find some creative way to make it funny or useful.3
Yay devRant stickers!! I suppose I could rant about how they took almost 2 months to get here, but I have a policy against complaining about free things so I won't! And because, well... DevRant is awesome!2
read some rants about a devRant meetup?
how do I know they are not from my manager trying to catch me rant-handed?3
When you're on DevRant reading a rant, have to Google what their talking about and then come back to upvote it like you knew.
So I'm getting closer to finishing my devrant-widget project but ran into an issue because some people use emojis in their about, skills, website, etc *cough @alice.. cough* and well.. it creates internal server errors because emojis dont magically convert themselves xD But I think I found a fix. On to the next bug.8
Well, this is a rant about devRant! Sorry.
I like devRant, especially when my internet connection is fast. But when it is not, it is very annoying to wait for a rant to load whenever I click [read more]. I found myself skipping interesting rants that I want to read just coz I don't wanna be waiting doing nothing during the loading screen!
Suggestions for how to improve this:
- Just like facebook and devRant web app, Increase the limit of the text that loaded when loading the rants feed. Not all of it has to be visible in the feed, but when clicking read more, show the rest so I can continue reading the rant while the comments are loaded.
- If not, then like youtube, load the whole rant first from the server when clicking read more before loading the comments.
- (Even for short rants) when clicking on a rant, show the loaded text while fetching the rest of the rant. This way I can at least click the rant, and continue reading till the rest of it (or comments) is loaded.7
I just realized that devrant is the *only* community I can resort to lol. I can't rant to any of my coworkers about work. can't rant to any of my colleagues in college because they are fucking idiots. I tried to help them improve time and time again but they just blatantly refuse and I just gave up and said fuck you guys. can't rant to my family or friends cause they can't understand shit about code.don't know if any other platform that has a community that's as amazing as this one. so I would've been practically alone if it wasn't for devrant. thank you guys for enduring my bullshit over the past year. and thank you for the developers for creating this awesome community. I don't really know what I'm talking about but I guess I had to rant a little. if you've read this far. Thank you.
guess this turned into a rant of it's own. lol. will write the actual rant in another post. XD3
So other project members joined devRant now. So now we can rant about the project together <3 Let's hope our supervisors aren't here also... that would be awkward, right?6
Relating to @mksana 's rant:
Here is how you add emoji's to a rant when using Windows:22
>About to finish large-ish GUI program in Java
>Finish coding program
>Be happy that you finally finished
>Go to test the program
> Doesn't start
>Debug the code for hours on end to find out why it isn't working
>Find that you were missing a semi-colon the whole time
>Yell into a pillow
>Go to devRant to rant about it11
I was having my after lunch coffee +reading devRant. I saw a rant about MySQL ("MySQL server has gone away" error).
It's spreading and no one can stop it!3
Hey, first post!
Just wanted to say hi to everyone, been reading through Devrant past couple of hours and found it both insightful and hilarious.
It'll be nice to finally have a place to rant about shit my friends would normally not have a clue about.
I'd put a lengthy intro about myself here however I'm not really about that.
Anyway, Hope to rant soon!4
P.S: I seem to have developed now a third sense, when the devrant post cooldown is down, so I can rant more lol, because whenever I feel like posting the thought or rant, the cooldown is just about to expire
Reads horrible code
Opens DevRant to rant about it
Reads some stories
Ok, better mood, I can continue working now.
What was my planned rant about again? Ah, it can't be that bad.
Goes back to the code: Oh no, it is that bad...1
!rant I just put my phone in my pocket with the devrant app open.
I take my phone out again about 10 minutes later and i'm in the process of making a new devrant account....
So somehow while the phone was in my pocket, it must have clicked the logout button and sign up button and had entered random letters for the email name and password section.
Boy, i'd like to know what my pocket (or Ass) wants to rant about....2
I would like to add a new word to the devrant glossary, next to !rant
Recursive rant - rant about another rant
Any one interested in building a devrant glossary with me? Comment the words you like to add 😅20
Hey guys! We have started working on the cross platform desktop app for devRant for a while.
Here's the Collab link: https://devrant.io/collabs/420025/
Here's the GitHub link: https://github.com/tahnik/devRantFX
Here's more information about what we are using for developing the project:
1. Java 8
3. IntelliJ IDEA
6. Travis CI
7. JavaRant API (created by LucaScorpion)
Right now we have 4 collaborators: allanx2000, sirwindfield, LucaScorpion and me.
If you are interested in the project, you can always let me know and I will do something about it.5
> be me
> started using greentext on devrant a while ago
> semi successful rants
> people start using greentext too
> be happy
> no one knows I started it
> maybe it wasn't even me
> sit in shower
> try not to cry
> cry a lot
Shit. That's not a rant about coding
> fuck microsoft2
/*Why this website does not use slashes to the front of all the comments on a rant is beyond me!*/4
That irksome moment when you want to rant and vent about a particular workplace incident but wonder if your coworkers are on devrant too.
And they certainly might figure out no matter how cryptic you are.
*puts mask back on*2
Public feature request: If we tap at "devRant", the feed refreshes. Can we have the same thing for rants? My shitty internet at home is fast, but choppy so when I check my notifications and it doesn't load the rant, I have pretty much no idea what that notification was about.2
Hmmmm its almost new year im having finally holiday from school and all that stuff but still working on ROMs but well another story and i dont have a thing to rant about which i think is kinda good but sad at the same time.
So all i wanted to say to you guys that 2017 was an amazing year full of learning new stuff and trying, meeting some cool people.
I have done a lot of work this year.
Created a sort algo which well was already created but i didnt know that sadly.
Working on encryption algo (Still)
And lot more but thats not what the rant is about.
It was as i said above an amazing year and im sure we had a loooooooot of fun at devRant.
Some big changes happened this year at devRant mostly the web UI and livestream which was totally amazing.
Also a lot of thing happened here looooot of awesome things and i finally updated my fucking firefox extension for 57 standard (Yeah i was late on that one).
I surely would have said more but nothing comes up in my mind now only some quantum mechanics stuff but well thats not what the rant is about neither.
So Happy New Year to all of you guys and let the 2018 be more awesome then 2017;5
I am a pretty well of dev with a nice job and a nice salary. Yet I still suffer from imposter syndrome. It's nice to get on here and read rants about shit I've also has issues with or just feel better about myself because I wasn't the one the person that rant was about. Cheers to you devrant1
Now the following might shock you, read on with caution.
FUCK YOU DEVRANT.
I was writing a beautiful comment, i wrote an eassay you do not find anywhere else, i was about to spread more wisdom than the fucken bible.
Decided to search some stuff to put in some references, change back to devrant anD THE FUCKING APP RESTARTED LIKE IT'S NORMAL TO DO SO. RANT GONE, COMMENT GONE, WILL TO LIVE GONE.
THANKS FOR FUCKING NOTHING.
but in all honesty, who cares. Not a big deal.7
Loving the community here I wish more people I know personally knew about DevRant hence why I just bought myself a stress ball. Hoping that someone at work might notice it!5
Lots of questions going on about devRant. Just want to make devRant better.
1. Please tell the update intervals of upvotes and downvotes. Is there a delay? Doesnt really matter but i see many times i got a upvote notif but my score didnt increased...
2. Duplicate image algo is so poor. I know it is only in beta, but i see so many reposts which has the same pic but only with the resolution different or the image with the devrant watermark.
3. Minor, tags should be also saved when exitting the post rant activity.
4. Feature request : go to top, bottom in rant
5. Please make web app accessible in mobile. I think you check the user agent for the web app, but can you make it available to mobile users who cant download the app?
6. When accessing the web app in mobile, i type devrant.io/feed
Then, by the wonderful intent you made, it opens the app automatically. I was writing a rant, but it was all deleted.
7. Any new podcasts and cartoons planned?
8. Still bug not fixed.
Write a comment in a long rant.
Delete the comment you just wrote.
You cant reply to the last person comment.
I saw a devrant user posting something about "the cockroach" that survives in the company no matter what so I knew I had to rant about something similar. I worked with a guy and his ability to talk shit is in direct proportion to his salary. The guy watches youtube all day, searches for things to buy, goes to vacations and no one knows what he does. :)) plot twist: he just forwards ( not sends ) emails from the business to a software provider. Did I mention that he has the highest salary( don't ask how I found out ).
Anyhow, the guy is winning at life, no one gives two shits about him, he is always hiding and running from work. While writing this I'm actually amazed by his skill, how do you end up like this? He reminds me of Wally from Dilbert!2
I think i joined devRant back in October and since then it has become my most used app. Its so great to be under the same of its kind! And even though I don't have something to rant about at the moment, I am gonna support all those ranters with my ++'s! I already ++'t over a thousand rants and won't stop!5
Some days ago I have posted a rant about my first python based script for ubuntu that shows push notification which tells a user about their routine. I am happy that I posted about it here on devrant. I found some people were helping me other than criticizing me of re-inventing the weel. I guess supporting each other and having fun is the spirit of devrant. Visit https://github.com/rabingaire/...
To see my simple python based script :)
And thank you devrant and Community :)2
Can you rant about yourself?
I was reading about the AWS outage, with little to no interest. I didn't know what it was and thus figured it wouldn't affect me.
Some time goes by and I come up with this 300++ vote post. I'm witty, I'm smart, but when I want to upload a photo it doesn't work.
Must be the app right? I restart, nope nothing. Whatever..
Sometime later I have a dashing new photo for tinder. Surely to give me all the matches. Nope, can't upload it.
Must be my phone or Internet then.
Restart everything, nothing is working. Complete madness, no devRant upvotes and I'm still single.
I surrender, give up. Which is one of the worst things to do for me as a dev.
Today. Which is the cherry on the cake. I finally see my connection to the incident. I feel stupid and annoyed by myself.
God dammit Julian, pay attention.
Just wrote a rant/story about my school day, seriously spend 10 - 15 min writing it and I was just about to post it, but boom - "Unfortunately devRant has stopped"
Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.
P.S. if you think devRant would have saved my rant, don't worry I thought that too but when I checked it, it was empty just like my devRant notifs!!2
The biggest national televison channel (governmental) is doing a report about our company tomorrow, so i will be om TV
I'm a little nervous tbh
Do you have any cool ideas for some small eastereggs when they film my screen/the office?
A devRant logo somewhere is already planned ;)8
Opened firefox twice infront of boss and had devRant as the active tab, I hope he didn't notice, but I doubt T_T
I will only know if I saw a rant about me, other than that I think I'm good :313
I've been away from devRant (and other social media) for a few days because I thought i needed to concentrate on a project that I'm currently working on.
I just realized that I need this, I really need to rant! There is just too much to rant about. Like how fuckin annoying tomcat is, (don't ask me, someone is paying for me to use it), or how eclipse is happily hugging over 1gb of my ram, ( again don't ask), meanwhile vscode is doing just the same thing (debugging a tomcat server) with less than 300mb! There's so much to be annoyed about that I truly don't know how I was getting along before devRant.2
The fact that my boss knows I'm on devRant means, that I can't rant about anything, that can be linked to my workplace or current assignments.12
Literally the first rant I made when I joined devRant was about this very piece of advice.
Me: "The build in testing is broken, this is how we fix it"
PM: "They haven't noticed yet, work on the feature request"
(Hopefully this is the meta rant to kill meta rants)
I'm fucking sick of devrant.
New users posting shit memes with the wrong tags.
But worse are old users complaining about said new users, or just beginner devs from other sites
Yes, some people need stack overflow every 5 minutes.
Not everyone has the capacity to understand every documentation.
Not every documentation is updated or entirely correct.
Not everyone has more than a year or two of experience.
Don't be part of the dumb circlejerk. Just complain about your bullshit boss, coworker or tech.11
Guide to dev rant:
Job interview fails
Rants about js
Posts complaining about devrant
Devrant probe finished: no other content4
I finally quit my day job at the place I was working to finally go full time with my business, TerraNimbus. I was able to secure a small loan to cover business and personal expenses until I can drum up enough business to keep things a float.
I’m super fucking stoked because I’ve been wanting to branch out and do this for about 4 years now and finally feel like I have the right pieces in play to make it work. I’m as nervous as hell but so fucking excited too!
I just needed to share this here cause the DevRant community is world class and you guys/gals are fucking killing it everyday being AWESOME!!! And you all feel like extended family members to me all going through the motions in each of your lives and keeping ‘in touch’ through devRant on a daily basis. So I wanted to share my story with everyone here.5
When you are waiting for something to screw up the whole day so you can rant about it on devRant, but everything goes well. :(
Typical experience on devRant: I posted a tongue-in-cheek rant about something that I could easily fix if only I really wanted to, and I received unrequested advice after 5 seconds 😂
Then I realized that this is probably what women experience on Twitter all the time 🤔12
I've written a rant that was too long to devRant, so I made it into a medium article instead. You can read it here:
In short, it's about Apple's weird legal practices when it comes to Apple Developer accounts.
- Apple has "obvious" security reasons that requires a copy of a photo id, and you aren't allowed to conceal sensitive information
- Apple's favorite form of communication is fax and snail mail
- Apple needs multiple signatures and court documents to just change your account name.
I was just listening to a podcast and they mentioned patreon. Not sure if you two, @dfox and @trogus, thought about creating a patreon page. I would definitely support you guys for the work and time you two put into devrant. Would be awesome to have some method to tip you guys some dollar for a tea ;)2
So, there is alexa skill for devrant, and it just read out lout a rant by @AlexDeLarge
(The one about him saving a business and nit getting even a single thank you)
It seems thatd alexa automatically sensors the word *Fuck*,4
Coding has brought me into new communities and is the reason I have some new friends. I have to say, the best part is knowing how things work. I love knowing how this rant is sent to a remote devRant server thru a socket. How my rant gets divided up into an array of characters, each just a string of 0’s and 1’s. How my rant is stored in a database. How the devRant server connects everyone, and how everyone can (if they have to) use a VPN if it’s blocked, etc. And of course, how it’s all done securely. It’s great having that confidence going into the future knowing that you’ll be relevant and you have technological security. I love talking with people and explaining how things work. How when people say “stop acting so smart, you don’t know anything about X,” which to I reply “do you know how many fucking Xs I made.” Coding is great.
I'll tell all my dev employees to use devrant. Why? Because I'll definitely rant about him/her, so he should do the same about me.1
This is actually a question about the devRant app.
I’ve noticed this a few times. When I click a rant repeatedly (say x times), from the front page or from the notifications pane, multiple layers of that rant open up. And I have to hit the back button x amount of times to go back to where I initially was (again, front page or notification pane).
Now, I understand an app capturing multiple user inputs on the same object but shouldn’t it also account for this by only considering those taps as one input, especially if the object is lagging and hadn’t been loaded? Why is devRant implemented this way?
I would consider it undesirable to have Gmail open the same email in multiple layers when you click the same email repeatedly. So, is devRant’s a feature or a bug?
I’m not a web (app) developer. I’d just like some knowledge on how user input might be captured and why repeated inputs aren’t screened out?
If anyone could page the two awesome doods who work on devRant, that would be awesome! I hope I didn’t just wrongly assume their genders.5
Not my rant, but this person can probably use some devRant in his/her life. Go read the full tweet and his/her replies here.
Buck up for a very very long read.
There was quite the argument storm in (a) similar rant(s) here, so hope peeps don’t mind how this is just adding to the pile. The tweet uses a lot of web examples and bashed really hard on them.
PS: I do web dev myself, but I have to agree to certain nasty things about it.10
Is it polite to rant about devRant in devRant?
It could be great to have body structure option in avatar creation. (like skinny, chubby, fatass etc).10
What's your new year resolution(s) for 2018?
What do you like about devRant?
Which area do you think devRant can be improved?
// I got asked those questions last night at one of the project dinner.
// So now I am asking you guys here.
// I have replaced the project name to devRant for us.
// My answers in comment.3
🤔 What if my co-workers see my rant on devRant and recognize that I'm ranting about the project that we're building together? Might be awkward *thinking5
The riskiest thing I ever did was rant about windows 10 updates on devRant. I got shut down hard! :'D2
Goes for a tea break and wanted to rant about something. Opens devrant:
Ranter1 posted a new rant
Ranter2 posted a new rant
Ranter5 posted a new rant
"Ooh let's go through these first."
"Shit what was it that I wanted to rant about?"
Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.10
Me: Browsing DevRant
Me: seeing recent post of @Phlisg
Why didn't I rant about this?
I literally called myself Json because my name is Jason and there is JSON.
Btw @EaZyCode made fun of me because of this years ago1
I have been lurking around here for about a month. Finally decided to write about how devRant motivates me. Whenever I read stuff I don't understand it makes me realize I've got so much more to learn. Happy new year :)1
Sooo not so long ago, i was saying something about my recent first interview. I passed it and it felt so good and that kind of made me proud. But now it is even better! I just got my first peanuts as a developer and i must say "boy, it felt good" !
Thank you all, members of the devRant community for always giving me not only courage to try, ideas to research and reasons to laugh, but the most importantly: some insights of how things are out there. For a introvert like me it is really great to not simply step into the darkness, blindfolded 😁
Cheers to you all! 😘
A non-dev friend just complained to me about work and without second thought I recommended her to rant on DevRant. Now I am wondering if that would expose this sanctuary too much?1
I met a super interesting developer guy today in London in Starbucks and we talked a lot about programming and the Full Stack conference, he also has devRant, I hope he sees this post and adds me!4
I feel my first rant shall be about DevRant and not being able to access cool features (avatar) due to not having enough points.5
New to devRant!
Dayum, how did I not know that there's a dedicated place to rant? Y'all be careful, because there's so much I want to rant about every single day.
Have you ever wished something frustrating or disgusting may happen to you so that you can quickly rant about it on devrant?1
AAAARRRGH!!! I wanted to rant! I wrote a huge text! I got really furious about it! Then drove through some area without Internet, looked something up in the browser, returned to devrant app - and THE FUCKING FUCK TEXT WAS GONE!!!
That makes me even MORE ANGRY!!2
This February, I posted a !rant here ( https://devrant.com/rants/1999689/... ) about getting a NLP internship with the help of the community.
In the past few months, I have gone up, and now I have a job offer from a small organisation (StrataVAR) as their Python dev.
I received the offer letter today. Since I am in the third year of graduation, then want me to work parallel to the university classes, they pay way above Indian freshers' average, and they have put me in a team that works on things I like.
It would not have been this way without the help and support of the communities I'm a part of, such as DevRant and StackOverflow (obviously). I just wanted to thank all who cared and helped. It means a lot.8
So I was just about to tell you all how happy I am that it's my birthday, until I stumbled upon @DarkMelchiah s last rant, and suddenly I just felt like I couldn't write it any longer. It simply felt wrong. So to you @DarkMelchiah, I wish I could export some of my happiness to all of your classes and functions.
And also, hey, it's always okay to tell us about the sad things that happen! That's the wonder of DevRant! We're not just here to rant with you, we're here for support as well.
Btw Dark, my cat died last year, though I knew she would over a year before it happened. I totally get how you feal, but at the same time I guess I don't. All the goodynessieness to you!5
Why didn't I know about devrant when I was working on my motion detecting security system for school... Would have had lots to rant about2
Can devRant become a place where I rant about other non-tech related things? I used to use tumblr for this but here, there's a better audience, I guess! or here, there's an audience at least...
Anyway, I'm very angry and depressed right now4
Opening my IDE 3 (!) hours after getting to the office.
Then instead of writing some code I go to devRant to rant about it ;)1
So Apple did make iTunes connect better but why the hell would they disable the tab button to move to next text box? I hope its just something wrong on my end or that would be a dumbass move -_-
On a side note, devRant need to have a category for Apple so it makes it easier for at least me to rant about them -_____-3
Sometimes I feel like, if anybody would have told me, the real use of GitHub, bitbucket or any other version control systems. Then life would have been much easier.
I remember in my college days, I use to keep the code backup in several different places on my system as well as Google drive and Dropbox..
For working parallely with the team-mate in college means...sharing of changed code..every now and then..via mail😫
Git, bitbucket you're the real MVP. Period.2
To anyone who was asking about my github and the devrant tampermonkey filter - I finally linked it now on devrant (most browsing the devrant github issues, probably guessed it anyway) and I am now going to finally again start trying to give back to the github community - which is basically what I had planned to do in 2018! really excited to start fresh again! 😊4
Hmm... so I was thinking...
What if devRant implemented a feature that lets you get rants into some kind of list, accessible via your profile? Kind of like the "Watch later" list on YouTube, or playlists. I know we have a "Favourites" list of rants, already, on devRant, but being organized about this might be a good idea.
What do you think?3
Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.
ADHD Self:"Coding is love, coding is life. Plus I'm getting paid."
Responsible self: "Wait no, go home sleep, spend time with your wife"
Remembering self:" she's out with friends"
Responsible self: "ah, carry on, she's probably spending more money than you're making"
!rant && type=="idea"
So lately I've been seeing a lot more posts about Devranters organising meetups, having some drinks together and loads of fun like that, absolutely amazing!
What I think is sad is that a day or two after those meetups, I see comments passing by saying "I wish I knew about this earlier" and "Oh man, would've loved to come if I knew!"
Perhaps it's an idea to make a subsection for (un)official devrant meetups/events on devrant so everyone who's interested in meeting fellow ranters can find these posts in one location, or maybe even a calendar with these meetups/events
How do you guys and galls feel about this?1
Rant about devrant!
Did you know that whatever we post on devrant is available on Google search. Why the hell would you do that devrant. Why can't you keep it private. One of my client caught me ranting about them on devrant. Please keep the posts private as we don't want the entire world to read it.6
The thing I really wish for is devrant posts not to be visible when i look up things on ddg, because i wanna rant about stuff but they are so exact that it would take 2 nanoseconds to find my user here.4
If employers see my devRant profile, I hope they don’t think too hard about this rant: https://devrant.io/rants/705145/...
Just dropping by to tell you guys about my unofficial app for DevRant: https://github.com/and3rson/iorant (alpha).
Anybody willing to contribute is very welcome!6
This is crazy I actually bough a phone just for devrant total worth it, this morning I read a rant from someone thinking about wearing a tin foil to avoid NSA from spying on H ,your not alone, FYI this is how it looks like
Came to devRant to Rant about react, And then rant about devRant. Is it just me or getting to ‘my rant collection page ‘seems like extra steps than needed? Other than that, i really like this app though :D1
rant or !rant
Hey ranters have you checked podcast of devRant on Youtube. It's great.
All dev of this great community please subscribe to devRantApp on YouTube and increase it's views. While I'm ranting about it has only 1.2k views and 51 likes. Please check that out.
@dfox and @trogus Just listened to a podcast of devRant featuring Andy Hunt "Author of the Pragmatic Programmer".
My favorite line he said is " In effort to evaluate betn mediocre programmer from great programmer certification available is pathetic, this is why Alien don't come to visit us anymore".
He also talks about RubberDuck and many more.
Every time I write a rant or a comment from my phone, and I want to temporarily switch to another app to search or copy something, it's a fucking Russian roulette.
Will there be enough RAM, or will Android stop devRant thus losing all my content forever? Let's find out! The gun is loaded.
(What about handling the full activity lifecycle like Android requires?)
Now, I would like to attach a picture of the feared "task switch button", but I'm too afraid to lose everything, so fuck it3
I am quiet these days although I had few materials to write about. Like my journey of devdesk. I bought a proper chair. New mouse and got a mechanical keyboard. Work is fine but it is definitely not lack of rant-worthy moments. I had deactivated my Facebook and I wasn't that active on any other social network from the start. So all the more reason for me to be active here.
But turn out I'm not. I was thinking about it and this is my outcomes.
1) I'm focusing more on my tasks after adoption and practicing pomodoros technique. Hence using devrant lesser.
2) My right hand was literally unusable and unmovable for two times in past 5 weeks. Hence using phone lesser.
3) There was that notifications bug period and I thought people were just quiet like me. Hence more reasons to be less active.
4) devRant algo is good but not smart. It knows that I have a relation with PHP. But it doesn't know that I don't hate PHP. >>> How many times a week can you listen/ignore to people saying "Hey your wife is a silicone doll?" Fuck you. I know. But I'm married to my silicone doll. So fuck off. <<< PHP is just an example. I literally close devrant whenever I see "(noun) is (something negative)" posts.
My hand will fully recover soon. (I do hope so). My tasks will not always be super overwhelming. The app's bugs are getting fixed.
However I have a doubt about the last point.
Dear @dfox and @trogus
I'm writing this here because reporting such issue to GitHub doesn't seem to do it's justice.
It's been happening for like HALF A YEAR.
AND IT'S YET TO BE PATCHED.
WHY. WHEN I CLICK THE BACK BUTTON ON MY PIXEL 2 XL (ANDROID 9). ALWAYS CLOSES THE APP?!?!?
Yes, this is a rant about DevRant, I have no complaints other than this exact one.
It's been happening for way way WAY too long, and never been patched.
Please don't reply to me "why don't you report it on GitHub?" ITS BEEN REPORTED OK?!
I've always loved DevRant since I first joined, but this issue is preventing me from browsing it every time. It's jus irritating.
Please, @dfox and @trogus, try and for once take the time to try and fix it.
Stupid useless humanities courses, because, really, who cares about humans? Besides that, silly Excel questions at work, my boss talking of his non-work projects and devrant (because it is not a #wk51 rant without saying it)
I want to suggest a feature that can help/encourage people to post rants more openly on devRant.
How about anonymous posts, like on Quora?
Pardon me if this feature request is already raised.2
I was going to rant today about lack of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in some developers, this rant was based on the interviews I have seen flop over the years.
But then, as I am typing it, people in my office start having this exact conversation. We get together and discuss it and in the end we come to the same conclusion as my rant.
Now it feels like a waste to rant about something on the internet when I got to have a real in-person discussion about it.
It’s like devRant in real life!
The outcome of the offline chat...
- Have a cultural policy that is strictly NO ASSHOLES
- Watch for people who are nasty on the internet, especially LinkedIn
- Be careful with people who have a lot of questions for you but answer your questions with “we are in stealth mode” or something similar
- There is no point in wasting your time on these folks in an interview, just politely conclude it as fast as you can and move on
Devrant bug report:
Every 5th or so time I open the app it opens on this one rant from last week. Really strange.
(if it helps: this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/960649/...)3
OK, I kind of liked this devRant thing, when I clicked to register for a new account, I got a stupid popup about free stickers, clicked it, the title says "get free stickers ...", to catch users attention but then you read "you have to reach 30 ++'s on a single rant"
OK, fuck off, I don't want these stupid stickers and stop doing this shit again.5
Been meaning to rant about this for awhile. Currently in college and in this class we have to write BASH scripts which isn't ever that hard. Except for the fact that everything is checked against a pre-written script. FUCK I just wrote a complex script that does work but because it's not EXACT its coming back failed even tho it prints everything correct and works.
So now instead of fixing the script I'm back on DevRant wasting more time.1
YOU wouldn't believe how ridiculously easy to make OriginalContent for devRant! 100% WORKING
TL;DR; - Clickbait for my rant about not working youtube search...
which fucked me up, so i wrote this rant for about 1,5 hours... this maybe shows how fucked up i'm
Anyways...I'm missing old rants, and i hate the "new wave" with the 9gag CTRL+C, CTRL+V...
So who else loves the 'old times devRants', can join and tell THEIR rants ;)
We need to create a Rant AI! After see the IO17 I feed the need for a AI for devrant... An AI who makes Rant about devs
there's gotta be another drunk post of me now sores
What I love about devRant aren't only the rants but really the comments. In almost every rant the comet section is at least as funny ass the rant it self. This shows how awesome this community isch.
Don't drunk as much as me and I really do.enjoy being part of this aesome part of the interwebs.1
So far, devRant has severely damaged the 'I need to pay someone to rant too about my work' industry and caused a boom in the 'these guys have an awesome set up; I want a new monitor' industry. Social media guys! Powerful stuff1
I gues devrant android app got an update recently [last week?]? Notifications suddenly started to work. Yayy!
But in-app notifications broke. More often than not either tab in notifs [all, ++, comments, etc.] loads nothing and there's no way to re-fetch data manually. If _all_ breaks I have to browse each category manually to see what's new.
Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing this?
Galaxy s7 edge, stock everything.
P.S. I rarely get to rant about devrant :)
advice && !rant
I'd love some advice from you iOS devs on devRant:
- Is it a solid career choice for a new grad? Does it limit your skillset early on?
- How open/active is the ecosystem and the open source scene?
- Storyboards? Yay or nay?
- What do you like the most about your job?
- What do you dislike the most about your job?
Thanks guys :)4
Looks like I'm now the oldest devRant supporter 🤔 Maybe I should get back on the app since it's been a while but honestly don't really have much to rant about1
On one side, I don't want devs in my firm to know about devRant //Coz they know my %Username%
But on the other side, the more, the merrier.. I could rant about stuff with all those I work with..3
I get frustrated about the shitty work I'm forced to do to meet useless deadlines or follow meaningless ever changing consultant ideas.
I write a rant.
People in devrant suggest me best practices, solutions, tools, even technical steps.
I write this meta-devrant.
Devrant refuse to add more than 1 rant every 2 hours.
I think I now see the value in Twitter... After ranting in devRant for so long, I now want to rant about other things....
Wonder if the username rantingLunatic is taken... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Maybe not the place to rant about this but I was unable to post on r/VPN nor r/NordVPN because I have insufficient karma (I have negative karma). I just want to ask some questions!!!! It's the same frustration as in Stackoverflow when I want to upvote something and tells me I don't have enough points (I only have 2 points). Thanks internet for reminding me every day that I am not enough important to say what I want and making me feel like less. Is devRant going to shut me? Wouldn't be surprised! Anyways TGIF and have a nice weekend 0/10
How about a rant about devrant?
Where the heck can you find info about how stuff works within a rant?
How do I embed a picture or a link properly?
How do I use the smileys?
Actually, the post-window itself should empower the user to do these things, but all you get is the attach image thingy.
I presume this all works out of the box when ranting with your mobile phone or something, but using the port rant thing on the site, I have no clue.
So, can someone please link me to the OBVIOUS location where this info can be found and that I missed? Thanks.22
Another day, another weird trend that's come up on devRant. Today it's Light Theme vs Dark Theme. Take your pick and place your bets! 'cause after setting Windows to dark theme, I ain't leavin' it! What about you guys?4
Do you take your devRant stuff to work?
Don't you ever wonder whether they think that you are ranting about them on here?
I know everything about you.
I've seen every rant on devRant.
And I know who are here for laughs and who are here to get rid of stress1
I am new here and don't know what is Rant & what is devRant all about ... Please tell me . I downloaded it from play store because of good rating. 😅😅5
I wanted to refer devrant to my teammates but then I realized I wouldn't be able to rant about them if ever. Better that they discover this themselves instead lol 😂2
Do you know any blind devs? How do they work?
And can devrant be used by blind people?
Thought about this when reading this rant :
My manager just rant on twitter .. I think it's time to introduce him this amazing place but I don't want him to listen my opinion about him...
Do we have some kind of block options in devrant??1
thank you devrant for giving me a forum to complain about developers who rant to change the route config file because they don't know how write a simple action link.
Ages ago I read on devRant about someone who set vim bindings for his entire Linux desktop.
Does anybody remember this rant or knows how to do it?2
Can anyone suggest me any site or place from where i can get questions to improve my programming skill
... Like practice questions9
Rant about other people ranting about people ranting about Microsoft/GitHub, you really need to stop telling people about what they're allowed to rant about, your rants about other people's rants are taking over devRant and it's annoying as hell!
We get it, you're against people ranting about certain topics, but at some point you've got to move on.
(How meta can we get?)5
How many people can say they've read just about every rant posted? I remember when I first started I didn't have much to do and read all the way back, now I feel as though I've committed myself to this and refuse to miss any rants!
Thanks so much DevRant!!!1
Ever since I stumbled upon devRant, I have learned so much about the developer community that I had no idea about before. I'm just a lowly undergrad with no real world experience, but this community has provided so much insight of what the real world is like. Thank you, devRant community, for this insight.1
I have a question about how to set up TensorFlow and use Node.JS for MongoDB CRUD. Help!
Cool, have that question on StackOverflow, because this isn't. If you have nothing to rant about you probably are still missing uncountable hours in training to get on a level where you can rant. Fuck off. Choke on a horse dildo. Get it through your thick idiot skull that devRant isn't your beginners bingo bongo chit chat.6
Fuck people when they are talking about their own problems instead of dealing with the purpose of the meeting!
Go take a coffee and talk to your friends if you just want to rant (or write in devrant)! Don't waste my time!1
I was writing a random rant about something that happened to me this morning, and the app decide to crash a second before I could post it.
I get it devRant, my stories aren't interesting, but you could at least have crash at the beginning and not after I have already spent half an hour writing the story :(
A friend wants to post a rant about that devRant doesnt sent him the email confirmation but he can't because his email is not confirmed. Hahaha1
I fucking hate when devrant refreshes the feed when I pull down but not release my finger. Especially most of the times I already start reading the second rant but it all goes away with a flick...
Happened many times I even started changing my screen touching habits in order not to fall into this pit but still sometimes it happens and arrrgh.
I like sorting by algo and rarely use recent. I’m on ios so I’m not sure if it also happens on android but damn so annoying.3
We should invent a codeword for saying that devRant is awesome--lots of rants seem to be about it. That way we can add it to the end of any rant to show our love.
I’ve seen so many rants on here about people wanting things for free for whatever reason.
While devrant is great, I think this is the best rant on the subject ever.
Advice wanted! !rant
Guys i started web dev about two years ago on windows but i want to switch to linux. I thought of using elementary os, ubuntu or arch. What would you recommend?
Also how do you do your setup then? Dualboot or in a vm? I want to use docker to set up my infrastructure if possible.
Also i mainly use InteliJ for dev.
Thanks in advance!
Also i love devRant!18
Is it possible to delete your devRant account? If then, what happens to the user's rants and comments?
I am asking these because in one of my rants there are several comments of mine point @ other user's comments (that @someprick thing), but the comments I referred to are just gone.
What about the comments being there even if the user deleted his account?7
Arg! I'm ranting about the unofficial devrant extension nuuuuu!!!!!
I can't attach images, every time I click attach image and select the image, the notification box disappears and upon reopening, it's refreshed! Why bother with the link if it's gonna do dat!
Haxk20 wherever you are, heed my words!
(I felt guilty writing this mini rant)3
Non-rant rant here..
Anyone living in Europe that got his/her devrant stickers? If so can you tell me about how much time approximately it took to ship, so I can calculate, as i need to be at another place at about a month..
So guys , there is no other place to ask this question.
I'm thinking about making a Python wrapper for the devrant API . There isn't much info on the web.
I'm really stuck guys , how do I go about doing it .
!rant As i posted, for my thesis I've been forced from my relator to statically and dinamically analyze some ransomware, infortunately a lot of these malwares detect the sendbox and they inibhit themselves. Are there someone experoenced who works or study these malwares and is so gentle to answeer, meybe privately, some questions of mine? Sorry for the !rant but I feel lost about these questions and I ever trust in devRant :)
Am I the only one who thinks those wk questions have to go away or should change since they have nothing to do with ranting? DevRant is growing and growing but since everyone is answering those questions only like 2/10 posts are proper rants.
Would be awesome if those questions are made so that people start rant about it.3
One day @dfox, a person is going to lose their job being on devrant all day. Then rant about how they lost their job being on devrant.
I feel a quick improvement to the UI could be if the Rant / Comment textarea had focus when it opens so you can start typing right away. Or is it just my setup (chrome / windows / pc / mouse / keyboard / screen)?2
Rant about DevRant on DevRant:
I don't know why DevRand is showing me the Login dialog even if I'm already logged in and the session is persistent?3
Ranting about devRant today:
I was writing this beautiful rant last night, but this morning it's gone. Why you no autosave??????
Is devrant developers using dark patterns in this app? I have set my notifications on only for direct mentions of me but there are tons of unrelated notifs;
1. Somebody ++ d your comment/rant
2. One or more comment on a rant...(can only be disabled manually)
I dont care about these notifs and I have minimum notif setting. What is the point providing settings that does not work.9
Rant about devRant on devRant:
The about user section just leaves the view when you scroll down and never comes back when you scroll up! Rant! rant! Rant!!
