My last school used my SSN as the default account password.
Just to test, I used the “forgot password” functionality, and they sent me my SSN over clear text.
As a developer, I see that as 2 mortal sins 😡12 -

Useless notification..
Working on a Job Portal Application, i made notification functionality.
At least i caught this one before production5 -
Seriously, god bless Laravel and Taylor Otwell.
I've just had a customer foolishly delete all their user accounts. The customer was seriously stressed about this and as it usually goes, this stress was echoed in the call.
I explained how they can easily restore the deleted records in a single click as I have configured Laravel's "soft delete" functionality site wide. i.e. when they delete a record it isn't really deleted. Functionality to physically delete the record is hidden away outside the client's user level.
Customer was seriously grateful and paid for 2 hours of my time (even though the call took 15 mins) and generally gave me lots of kudos.
Laravel, awesome.6 -
Working on a data structure project for a university's course.
Made a dictionary and was testing it's search functionality. 😢4 -
I love writing and using my own apps!
Was just using 2 of them but found a new annoyance...
No problem! Open the source code, add the functionality, publish and install 😆
10 minutes after... All good and better 😁1 -
What I would define as a critical bug:
- System doesn't respond
- Functionality is broken
- Client data is all wrong
What QA defines as a critical bug:
- Typo on this page in the QA environment2 -
How to take being a programmer
"Haha Windows is bad"
"Php more like phpepsi"
"When you were 12 I was coding in basic"
"I'm not like other programmers"
"Stack overflow comes to me for help"
"I don't use an ide because word 2007 has all the functionality I need"6 -
Drivers across Operating Systems.
Windows: What the fuck is any of this? Here's something minimally functional.
Mac: That's not made by Apple, fuck off.
Linux: Here you go, have fun if you're missing functionality!3 -
Marketing once asked if we can add functionality to the site that would disable the back and close button on a browser...yeah7

We have a Miro collaborative whiteboard where product managers map functionality and user flows.

Writing all the major functionality of our app in a 10000 line class ( I shit you not) and then call it Utils.java.2
-
Client : This functionality doesn't seem to be working.
Me : What browser are you using?
Client : Internet Explorer. Do you know of a quick fix?
Me : Use a different browser... -
I just finish "rebuilding" a page that I have built last year. My Js file (jQuery) went from 1200+ lines to 600..
I rewrite everything, the functionality is the same but the code is mush more cleaner.
Soo bad and redundant code.
Although comments where very helpful.
Feels good. -
Client be like: I need a simple app. Should take only one week.
App: I need a Facebook clone will all functionality. :)
Estimated budget: 20$4 -
When a minor bug inspires clients to add a new functionality :|
Instead of 'video calling' icon to make video calls, I mistakenly displayed calendar icon in the App and now clients want me to add schedule video call feature :|6 -
On Windows: Use Tools and scripts to stop/uninstall/deactivate functionality so that the OS becomes useful for me.
On Debian: Use Tools and scripts to start/install/activate functionality so that the OS becomes useful for me.

When a programmer is in love,
He doesn't care about the UI, but cares about the algorithm and functionality.
In real life, he care about what is inside, not the physical appearance. :)5 -
PO: we want this new functionality, a new api call is needed in checkout process
Devs: okay, and what should happen in case of error?
PO: dont worry, it wont fail. Never.

Unfortunately it's same old same old.
Deadline approaching, changes keep coming in.
Deadline gets extended due to influx of change requests. Director says "ah the deadline is put back, that means we can add in even more functionality"
Anyone got a cyanide pill handy?4 -
Hardware of laptops today.
Displays: Glossy screens everywhere. "Hurr durr it has better colors". Idgaf what colors it has, when the only thing I can see is the wall behind me and my own reflection. Make it matte or get it out.
Touchpads: Bring back mechanical buttons. Haptic feedback dying with touchscreens/surfaces is a tragedy. "But we can have bigger touchpad area without buttons" ...why? the goal shouldn't be 1:1 touchpad vs. display ratio. It ain't a bloody tablet.
Docking stations: Some bright fucker figured out that they can utilize USB C. That thing keeps falling out with slightest laptop movement disconnecting all peripherals (guess why microUSB had those small hooks?). Also it doesn't have sufficient throughput, so the 5 years old dock can feed 3 full HD monitors just fine and the new one can't.
Keyboards: Personally I hate chiclet. And it's everywhere, because "apple has it so we must too". But the thing I hate even more is retardation of the arrow keys (up and down merged into size of one key), missing dedicated Home/End/PgDwn/PgUp buttons and somebody deciding the F keys are not needed and started replacing them with some multimedia bullshit.
My overall feeling is that this happens when you give the market to designers and customer demand. You end up with eye candy and useless fancy gadgets, with lowered ergonomy and worse features than previous generations of the same hardware. My laptop dying is my daily nightmare as I have no idea with what on the current market I would replace it.5 -
I took my old project and I was like "Why don't fix it and open source it?". So from 2785 lines of code in main class, I've cut it to 1662 lines of code while keeping same functionality plus some more...4
-
I guess some one saw the future at 1923
But didn't took the mute functionality into consideration🧐5 -
My coworker can't be bothered with learning git branching, so he comments out significant functionality during testing and then comments it back in before go-live. What could possibly go wrong?7

Introducing a new javascript functionality:
Relation operators
These help you determine if object is related to other object and in which way (parent, child)

Spent an evening coding 100 line of JS front end functionality that I achieved in 5mins with 2 CSS selectors.

Another night of progress :) Finished the category page functionality on my cms project for now. Gotta keep at it!6 -
When you're asked to extend a functionality on a piece of code and the 2.5k lines in the view are a juicy mix of PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and the functionality relying on jQuery trasversing through the document tree and expecting things to be in their place. Oh did I mention html build with strings in JS? I'm going to love this day! WHY, JUST WHY?! *gasp*3

Next task list of an Adobe developer:
1. Fuck something up so that the user has to google for the simplest possible functionality.2 -
1)Get Project/idea
2)Look for the most suitable tech
3)Draw out all the functionality
4)Break into milestones
5)git init
6) git commit
7) Start
8) Test
9) Complete
10) Feel like a King7 -
Idea was to make a little helper utility to be used once (only for myself, not client). But, I've kept adding layers of functionality over layers of functionality ... Long story short - this monstrosity (UI is bad, code not that much) was used for 10+ years (again, only by myself).
Finally, personal embarrassment was too big, so I took wooden stake and monster passed away. All related files deleted (but not before one final screenshot).6 -
Client: The image upload functionality is broken!!
Me: just tested it, works fine.
Client: no I'm trying to upload this image and it says It cannot complete the request.
Me: hmmm...
Client: does the fact that the image is 36MB has something to do with it?
Me: -
One thing that will eat up your whole day is someone else's uncommented code and you are supposed to enhance its functionality.4
-
Just been browsing Awwwards about websites: https://www.awwwards.com/websites/
All of that is unusable crap and achieves "clean" design mostly by not having functionality. The trick seems to be a useless fat image and tucking away functionality as small as possible. This is design wankery.6 -
Do you ever have those weeks where you have to fix a bug, then uncover another bug then another then another. Then you realise some functionality is completely missing. You write tests to cover your bug fixes and new functionality. Then you realise tests are broken with your fixes and you have no idea why. Then you get so frustrated you start making silly mistakes. Then your debugger starts playing up.... Yeah that's been my week.5

When you look at a layout and consider the hour it will take to refactor and clean stuff out to remove built functionality.
Nah fuck it - display: none !important;1 -
WOOOO!!!!! I BUILT MY FIRST FULLY FUNCTIONAL REACT NATIVE APP! Including the release apk that needs to be signed. Took an entire day and more like an advanced HelloWorld.
But the core functionality works... Though not pretty...3 -
This is my implementation of devRant Android app. Currently, it can only display rants feed, search functionality and display profile. You are free to modify at as you like https://github.com/themohammeda/...7

my boss gives me a 15 page list of changes to a web app yesterday. this afternoon he tells me forget all the silly things I'm doing, which just happen to be core functionality, and work towards getting it live.
wtf do you think I am doing... -.- -

Fuckkkkkkkk youuuuuuuu CLIENT :/
Client asked why two weeks for refactoring.?? When you already know the functionality and he gave us two days.
After two days we successfully renamed everything!!! 😣5 -
When the client decides not to do a feature because he finds your estimate unreasonable, then tries to add the missing functionality as a "bug" to another feature that's already estimated.3

"You don't have to implement all that functionality, just X" - proceeds to describe how X entirely depends on *all that functionality*2

enough is enough
to all the fucker ass morons deploying mini js frameworks with ambiguous names and undocumented functionality all fucking minified and using at least 20-30 of them on each page

Me: "Would you mind going through the intended functionality of this design on mobile?"
Client: "Sure. We were hoping that the content would expand to the largest box when you hover over it"
Me: "Hover?"
Client: "Yes"
Me: "On mobile"
Client: "Yes? Fingers can hover right?"
Me: "No"3 -
When project is finished, everything is according specs, and on final review the client says: "everything looks nice! But I would like to change just a few small details. I would like a different design and functionality".
Seriously?!1 -
Me: Which option would you like?
Option 1: £x.xx
Option 2: £x.xx
Client: Can we have all the functionality of option 2 but at option 1 price!1 -
Director: hey, we need this new functionality that I saw somewhere else... Easy right? Just copy & paste!!!
Copy & paste... It works every time... Right? No!2 -
So it seems Google got intimidated by WhatsApp's payment feature.
Guess what Google did, they integrated chat functionality to their payment app. 😂

What is the point of a CMS if you are gonna do every page custom with no common functionality or styling? FML

Fucking lazy customer support that files bugs with "<some functionality> is not working" with no steps to reproduce or any other description of the issue, deserve to die in the same hell as it is figuring out the rest of the details.

New rule for coworkers: Stupid questions get stupid answers.
"What does this deactivate button do?" It deactivates the object. //They wrote the functionality.
"What does x do?" RTFM. Did you check the file with common questions and answers? No? Do that.
Sigh1 -
Worst project would have to be a code igniter website that reinvented most of the wheel and used very little of the built in functionality of the framework.

My Boss, another employee and me were having discussion on a functionality on the website "How we will do it". After talking to us, my boss called his former employee and asked him the same question "How we will do this functionality".
After talking with the former employee, he comes back and tells us the same that we told him on "How we going to do it". Which pissed me off and I am angry on him, why the fuck does he has to call the former employee about this.
What do you guys think, should I be angry?3 -
fucking hate how some sites deliberately break their own scroll functionality if you haven't logged in/accepted gdpr nonsense/signed up for a newsletter.
It's such an easy fix (most of them just slap style="overflow:hidden;" to their <html> tag) but I still think it's very loathsome1 -
I know I'm only an intern. But what in the actual sideways fuck. Are clients really this stupid?! They want to push the app into the app stores a week earlier AND add MORE functionality? FUUUUUCK ME.2
-
A lesson I learned. Clients can't separate design from functionality. They will piss and main about a feature not working right when what they really mean is the aesthetic is not to their liking.

For those of you iOS Swift developers, how long did it take to learn and have a decent app with database functionality, coming from a different programming language background?8

So you remember the old, not so good days, when your app worked in all the browsers besides stupid Internet Explorer?
So I through those days were long gone, and today ticket that functionality doesn't work in Edge.
Good part of the story? Ticket number is 666.2 -
The shortcut to search solution explorer in Visual Studio is probably a choise made by PM after exceeding the project budget for the functionality.3

Ticket: We were able to get the site launch, but we lost some functionality on x. Can you fix ASAP?
Not a single url, didn't even know they were going to launch, or where. There must be an achievement for this. 🤡4 -
Noticed a rant on here about transactions not redirecting the user back to the previously visited page, on certain sites. Just implemented the functionality to my shitty little project and I currently feel better than the big players.1

That awkward moment when you convert JS functionality into pure HTML CSS just to find out it's not working on IE.1

An Apple Watch on a girl's wrist.
A smartwatch is a computerized wristwatch with functionality that goes beyond timekeeping. While early models can perform basic tasks, such as calculations, translations, and game-playing, 2010s smartwatches are effectively wearable computers.3 -
Why is it that when I ask you if functionality is needed you tell me it isn't. So why was it in the requirements doc? 🤔
Can I have the past 2 hours of my life back in which I attempted to work out the solution please.

Why can't managers understand that functionality changes and UX changes should be two separate epics? There's a huge fucking difference between composing an UI from existing components vs. having to figure out new components while at the same time paying attention to 12234234 new scenarios while at the same time duplicating existing components because existing portion of the app has to keep old UX.
And then they say bullshit like "we need solutions, not problems". Fuck you. Solution is to keep existing UX and focus on functionality, and do complex UX changes when functionality is well-defined and STABLE. But no, you fuckers won't listen even when the fucking lead dev tells you to.2 -

I have a meeting today with our UX designer to explain why we can't provide a Photoshop resizing functionality to a block level element inside a content editable div. That will be hard.2

PM wrote a really high-level requirement doc and asked me about estimates.
Me: Well, functionality-wise it will take 4-5 days provided the design is ready.
PM: Our designers are really full on schedule; Just do it! Expand your creativity. I believe in your taste of UX
Me: Listen, the implemented design will take much more time to change if we go back and forth. It's better to revise on the designer's screen.
PM: Oh don't be so modest! I trust you already. Just focus on the functionality, get it done first. For the design we'll talk about it later. Move fast and break things!
Me: ..Sigh. This is gonna end up badly.6 -
I hate that clients think the most important thing for a demo is UI. Working Application > Nice looking application with no functionality1

There are few developer who name their functions all wrong, but the functionality is fine. Then there comes those who name their functions right but the functionality is nothing close to what it says. There is this function I debugged. It's name is optimizeQuery. It does not optimize the query at all. Rather dismantles it. Also it made it's way to the production. 😅 Now I have to correct and optimize the optimizeQuery.4

A cool new CLI framework I saw trending on Github. It's mainly for TypeScript/JavaScript Node.js developers. I like the Quiz functionality a lot. Could be quite useful + it is super fast, took 0.4 ms to download.

It's ironing that being developer I have to explain client that bug he has reported is actually functionality. How can someone forget what they ask for??1

Last year, my company has added the functionality for users to reset their passwords.
The company was then 5y old and already had to reset thousands of passwords. Oh well...1 -
I spent an hour to debug spaghetti trying to find out why this damn functionality doesn't work. Then I was told that close button actually saves your progress. I was always using close tab button in browser to close that page. Great UX GG

IBM Notes. Ultimate example of developers each working on their own bits of functionality with zero thought to how the whole thing fits together. Just need to look at the preferences page see what a mess it is.

Nothing I fucking hate more than working without any sort of specification then being asked to change something multiple times because no one has any defined functionality.1

Client approved a design 2 months ago. I follow the design and build functionality based on the design and on budget.
What does client do... Doesn't want the site built says it doesn't follow their paper catalog. What paper catalog? I never got a paper catalog from design to follow. Three additional weeks later rebuilt the core of the site's functionality. And the final cost is 2.5 times over budget. Screw you Unnamed attorney search engine.2 -

A friend of mine removed a paywall deleting the DOM element that covered the page and all functionality from the site was intact.9

Why the hell does enterprise software get away with not having basic, logical, functionality?!
A hierarchical page structure should allow you to name multiple pages the same as long as they're under different parents.
Every FREE documentation platform understands this, yet atlassian fucking confluence can't figure it out.2 -
Alright, fellow coders. If I am required to spend 6-8 hours documenting your steaming pile of shit, MAKE SURE IT FUCKING COMPILES SO I CAN CHECK THE FUNCTIONALITY AND GET SCREENSHOTS! IT IS ALMOST NOON! I DONT WANT TO STAY LATE! Bitches.4

Estimated 12 hrs for a landing page that looks more like a home page design. Coded it and flipped it into WordPress in 6 hours, full functionality. Client says design still isn't approved because of text changes...that were already applied in development 😑

I don’t understand how Microsoft can continue to ship functionality in modern versions of SharePoint that only work on IE11 (open in Explorer, open in InfoPath, Skype presence integration). The only reason my company has to make web apps compatible with that browser is because of the hot garbage that is IE11. Just kill the functionality and kill the browser. Please.
Yes I know *why* they only work in IE11, it’s because activex is a massive security hole, but just kill the functionality if you can’t recreate it in modern browsers.1 -

Today I had to restart a VM that should contain only an apache server, after a period of time some clients complained that there a functionality in the system is not working. I checked the code and I found that this functionality is depends on local server in deferent port, so I back to VM log and found there was a node server was working on this port.
Every thing was fine till now, I check folders but there is no FUCKIN js files for node server.
After hours of searching I found 5 files in the public/assets/dist/js path that named with the same functionality name and a number 1 to 4 and the 5th one is a TEST.js. After checking all files I discovered that the server file is the TEST.js !!!!! seriously WTF ...2 -

UGH! Wasting time explaining to the client why you are not adding information/functionality to a page since a separate software will do it all (and better than what you would do).

So you're working on a product that basically the main thing it does is fire off http requests and parse their responses into a nice model. We've made some nice helper class that allows you to do this easily, but a simple piece of functionality is not in there yet.
You agree to add this one simple function and decide to:
- Not conform to coding standards set by the team
- Document its behavior which does NOT match the implementation
- Not write a single fucking unit test to prove it's functionality

After having witnessed developers use IntelliJ's built-in git functionality, I am persuaded that it should have never existed in the first place.
Asking you if you want to git add after every file you create, providing dangerous shortcuts that do pull, merge and push at once, but most importantly providing just enough comfort to keep their users ignorant about interactive git add or rebase, and other advanced git functionality.
The search for all the UI buttons + IntelliJ's baseline 5G RAM consumption is both slower and more error-prone than using the Git CLI15 -
Today a functional analyst said to me : The display need to be always the same, zoom or not. I think she don’t know how a web page work.
If you don’t know how a web page work, read on the subject before starting to argue with a web dev.1 -

I want to implement a functionality, I use framework X with cms Y.
40% of the libraries I find are outdated, 20% just don't work, 20% offer partial functionality but don't do what I want them to do and the rest just seem excruciatingly hard to implement
I'll try to put something together myself, not sure how it will work out3 -

Need to add a feature to an academic C/C++ QT project. I literally couldn't find a line of comment in the whole project, except for multiple // TODO: make this better.
Made a fast prototype of the new functionality with Python: 1 library, <100 LoC, about 30 minutes. Success!
Trying to get the same functionality to run in plain C/C++: after two hours the third library I tried finally compiles (and works cross-platform). ~250LoC and three hours later I have similar functionality as in the Python code. Can't wait to get this running in the QT application. See you on Monday... -

We have to deliver a new functionality in 2 weeks and the client hasn't share with as the specs of the flow and the business details yet.
So until today we had developed the half functionality believing that our system will communicate with Web services with a third - not the actual one.
We figured it almost by luck, when randomly, a colleague from the third system made a funny comment.....2 -

Coding gameserver emulators. It's always fun to code for a game which you don't have to do any of the artistic side and all of the functionality side.
Also network packet sniffing and trying to figure out what each this is is pretty fun. Love it.2 -

Generics look kinda cool. But it doesn't takes long before it becomes a giant mess. And then a manager asks for some new functionality and you end up changing every class that inherits from it. I hate and love it at the same time. A confusing relationship.3

Unfortunately, WordPress doesn't provide built-in functionality for exporting user data. The only way to do it is using an import and export user plugin.
But that's fine. Don't waste your time on essential functionality, just keep adding more features and gimmicks to your Gartenzwerg editor.

Some magic happened about situation talked in earlier rant at below link.
https://devrant.com/rants/2910513/...
Now magically even before I inform about this situation directly to the client, now after 8 years they used some proprietary static code analyzer on latest app source & found out around 200+ security issues which covers most pain points I told in the above rant.
I also found out that there is a list of 100+ vulnerabilities documented in client doc repo, which were pending since around 5-6 years.
Now I have to work along my junior to fix these both kind of issues.
Suddenly dull maintenance project became much challenging & interesting. :-) -

The time tracking app used at my company was created with Angular JS. Most functionality is quite fast so I can understand why they wanted to go this route. Unfortunately, the clock in section takes forever to load during peak traffic times... which is the only time that functionality is used. Someone found an older section of the site written with server side tech. Now everyone just bypasses the Angular clock in and uses the old one.
You shouldn't use tech for the sake of using it, it should also perform better than what it's replacing.1 -

God damn it, Gatling. Why didn't you put your fucking command line argument passing at the front of your docs instead of being buried under 'cookbook'? Keep languages simple and extensibility very restricted, domain functionality belongs in libraries.

Recently joined new Android app (product) based project & got source code of existing prod app version.
Product source code must be easy to understand so that it could be supported for long term. In contrast to that, existing source structure is much difficult to understand.
Package structure is flat only 3 packages ui, service, utils. No module based grouped classes.
No memory release is done. So on each screen launch new memory leaks keep going on & on.
Too much duplication of code. Some lazy developer in the past had not even made wrappers to avoid direct usage of core classes like Shared Preference etc. So at each place same 4-5 lines were written.
Too much if-else ladders (4-5 blocks) & unnecessary repetitions of outer if condition in inner if condition. It looks like the owner of this nested if block implementation has trust issues, like that person thought computer 'forgets' about outer if when inside inner if.
Too much misuse of broadcast receiver to track activities' state in the era of activity, apપ life cycle related Android library.
Sometimes I think why people waste soooo... much efforts in the wrong direction & why can't just use library?!!
These things are found without even deep diving into the code, I don't know how much horrific things may come out of the closet.
This same app is being used by many companies in many different fields like banking, finance, insurance, govt. agencies etc.
Sometimes I surprise how this source passed review & reached the production. -
