Favourite Programming Quote - Whats yours?
"A computer is a stupid machine with the ability to do incredibly smart things, while computer programmers are smart people with the ability to do incredibly stupid things." - Bill Bryson26 -
When you "fix" a bug not by actually fixing the bug but by disabling the user's ability to cause the bug.14
-
The ability to convince the compiler that there's no errors.
"Shhhhhh.. trust me, there's such things as a duoble. Now just tell me the build was successful"2 -
Clearly right now... Just spent 2 days writing a minesweeper clone because I wanted the ability to undo.
It's almost done... aka 10+ hrs...21 -
All of the questions I got from my co workers today could were solved by googling their error.
Now I question their ability to even use a computer.4 -
The ability to smack people everywhere around the world the second they think of creating another JS library2
-
Any idea why normal, intelligent people lose the ability to write coherent sentences as soon as they click into a bug ticket description text box?4
-
not even partition tables are safe from my near-supernatural ability to break shit through existing.10
-
An ability to port all Windows games to Linux without performance loss due to bad ports and bad drivers so I won't have to dual boot anymore.5
-
!dev
I never mix my personal and professional life. But I've totally lost that ability today.
She said no! 😶19 -
Best part of being a dev?
The perceived ability to fix ANY electronic device owned by friends and family.
"So you work with computers? Any idea what's wrong with my toaster?"7 -
If I had a dev superpower it would be the ability to generate 3D printed objects at will so I could have more cool shit on my desktop.11
-
"could you put me through to a colleague who has the ability to have an actual intellectual conversation?"
-
Somehow I finished the call but God damn it took some energy and self control not to completely lose my shit. His tone was also very denigrating (he just didn't agree on something which was his fucking problem)
Fuck him.6 -
Programming has taught me that time is a valuable and under appreciated resource.
if a task is repeated multiple times per week / month, you have at your finger tips the ability to automate the hell out of it and let your computer deal with the task instead.rant don't waste time dealing with mundane shit automate it wk202 repeated manual tasks let the computer do what it does best1 -
1.) Complete knowledge and understanding of C++.
2.) Fast and accurate typing skills.
3.) Ability to sleep peacefully all night.9 -
TROPHY WIFE!!!
Say all you want, the job requires tolerance and ability to stroke some ego. Really demanding hours and maintenance too. I just didn't fit the bill.22 -
if you ever feel bad or useless about your ability as a programmer, just remember that this is the kinda code i write when im tired13
-
Google has ruined my ability to retain information! I spent a few hours today failing to get my head around a problem, only to find I provided an answer to that very same problem several years ago on stackoverflow.2

Does anyone else suddenly loose the ability to type properly as soon as someone is watching/pairing?7

No one:
Absolutely no one:
Microsoft: "What about if our camera app stops recording as soon as its window is minimized because there is no such thing as people filming themselves reading from screen?"
You have to be impressed by the ability of these fucking morons to make common use cases artificially hard to do with their software.3 -
Best advice for dev job hunting is work on your soft skills. Don't be a fucking hero, prove your teamwork ability.
Remember all the rules of all religions and social communities can be summed up in one line: "Don't be a dick!"1 -
MFW someone compliments my coding ability but I secretly have a w3schools tab open in the background at all times9
-
"Why not adding fancy buttons when you could fix serious issues" - Android devs everyday
Oh, yeah, and the battery issue without having the ability to change the behavior of app, background apps and whatnot. Cuz battery is the forbidden apple that Android loves to feed on so muchhhh1 -
Ability to complaining about "Gradle is too slow in my laptop!" to my dad to get a better one.
Saying thanks to Google.3 -
A computer is a stupid machine with the ability to do incredibly smart things, while computer programmers are smart people with the ability to do incredibly stupid things.2
-
My superpower:
The ability to work on huge, complex projects/features without ever getting burned out.
In lieu of that, foregoing the need to sleep! -
1. Ability to freeze time... (except for internet & computer speed). Too many ideas, not enough hours in a day. Sleep should be declared optional as well.
2. Ability to not eat/drink at all, or eat/drink in copious quantities without negative effects. I enjoy a cognac, pizza & chocolate binge more than nausea, upwards BMI creep and hangovers.
3. True Virtual Reality. None of this headset crap, but immersiveness rivaling reality itself, with voice-controlled AI-assisted interfaces to "program" anything by simply describing it, iterating over details to add increasing complexities. Not even for porn reasons... my head just overflows with creative ideas for "holonovels" and interactive worldbuilding, but I don't have the patience nor artistic skills for game development.3 -
The Hyperloop
I am so amazed about the ability of the human race to fall for this bullshit.
Companies and governments are wasting their money.18 -
The best part about being a teaching assistant in programming is the ability to bitch about bad code.
The worst part is all the bad code...2 -
When discussing how me nearly dying impacted my ability to do my job, I was told I was expected to deal with that in my own time. Expected to take holiday for hospital appointments. No flexi time for fatigue.
I threatened to sue. They changed their tune...2 -
Damn, how have I only just discovered localstack?
The ability to spin up and use SQS queues, S3 buckets, lambdas, Kinesis streams etc. for development without worrying about bankrupting myself if I screw something up is really quite liberating.4 -
So y'all listen to me.
No Software Development methodology or technique is a silver bullet. None!
Every engineer must acquire the ability to know when and where to use different approaches, appropriately.
Well, you wanna read that again.9 -
The only thing I'm getting better at with experience is my ability to say upfront that I'm not able to do the requested task.7
-
If I could, I would ask the genie to give me the ability to completely disconnect from programming when my work hours are over.4
-
my best use of Linux's ability to pipe together commands
git | cowsay | lolcats
I also have a custom bash script written that if the message is longer than 50 lines it writes cuts it off with a '...more' and outputs to a file where I can read the full details if needs be.7 -

The lack of ability to think logically in some peoples brain is astonishing. And annoying, when you have to work with them. Fuck me.6
-
Just finished signing my first ever professional contract. Shortly after I was given a conpany sheet where I had to give part of my personal info and answer some fun questions, one of which was what super power would you want to have?
My answer was obviously: The ability to always find the missing ';' 😂😂😂6 -
The year is 2020, we have:
- Self-driving cars
- graphene batteries
- graphene nanotubes to combat cardiovascular disease
- the ability to fly around the world for very little money (not taking the pandeming into account)
yet we still don't have a simple fucking way to use EXT4 drives in w10 without relying on 3rd party tools...10 -
@dfox
Only 2 rants an hour.
Ok
How about the ability to save and manually post later feature?
I had an idea for a rant. It was gold i tells ya... if only I could remember what it was. 😥8 -
The ability to recognize previously solved problems and integrate a known solution is crucial to programming (and problem solving in general). Us programmers, we call that "Copy and Pasting."
-
It’s a pretty good feeling when you’ve been sweating deadlines, stay in late, worrying about users, testing, maintaining a list of projects as long as your arm but your boss comes to you and low key asks you to be CTO of the company. It’s a small company so we don’t officially have that title but that’s the role I’ll be filling!3
-
Give everyone the ability to intuitively grasp the concept of unix timestamps.
No more timezones or DST, no more confusion about formats.7 -
Just got my first callback for a technical interview in JS tomorrow morning.
WOOOOO
*Brain*
"That's cool fam, but you just lost any ability to write anything in it."
...8 -
PayPal sucks. They canceled our ability to take ecommerce payments just because. No reason given. We had not violated any terms of service. Our customers are happy with our products. And we were making them lots of money. They just up and pulled the plug because they’re PayPal and screw anyone who asks why. Idiots.3
-
A guy walks into tech interview. Solid 6 years of programming and teaching others. Proceeds to stumble on basic questions and fails to demonstrate even junior level of ability yet keeps alluding on how valued he is in his current position. How do people become so detached from reality?2
-
When your CS professor doesn't have a single IDE or text editor in their dock/taskbar you really start to doubt their ability to program.11
-
Today I had a programming exam
We had to read a request, write uml, use case etc...
I think "it's going to be easy!"
Than I remember that for some unholy reason we use java7
Than I remember that the keyword to automatically add getters and setters was added in java10
Had to write getters and setters by hand, on a piece of paper, for 5 classes...
I hate my university, we are Information Engineering that is the closest thing we have to Software Engineering in my city and we still do our programming exams on paper, that doesn't test your ability to program, but your ability to learn a load of information by memory9 -
This takes me back 14 years to the past when I first started learning VB.Net and Console Apps.
Learning F# to get my self into functional programming let's hope I don't get carried away with the ability to mix C# with F# :\ -
"Ability to work under pressure and work with cross functional teams to meet tight deadlines."
Nope. Nope.
Fuck the managers of whatever shithole you want to drag me to. Nope.1 -
would love the ability to export the profile pictures! would make a cool profile picture for things like github too i think4
-
Why, the best superpower of them all... The ability to materialize coffee based drinks from thin air.2
-
dates are just an index of time
practicing is just offsetting your initial, natural ability in a positive direction
do you guys ever just think of things in an abstract sense?
what are other examples?16 -
Found this on Twitter.
how people think AI will destroy the world:
going rogue and killing all humans
how AI will actually destroy the world:
strangling us with convenience, replacing our ability to function without it until our lives are entirely controlled by a wealthy few7 -
The trick to balancing social and dev life life is training a deep learning algorithm to the point it gains sentience and the ability to feel real human emotions and becomes your best bud until it ultimately decides it would rather catalog images of mustard bottles.

Guess what came in the mail today!
Thanks @dfox and @trogus
Now all I've got to do is purchase some hipster glasses and develop the ability to grow a mustache!9 -
Idea for Weekly Rant - What have you developed that you're most proud of?😁
Idea for Dev Rant in General - Ability to add and message friends. Groups or Communities to join and chat. 👫5 -
a) when i wanted to write a twitter client for the console
b) when i automated my job that i had at a school event
just the ability to do such stuff is very exciting to me. -
Just got a rejection email from the only interview I’ve gotten.... I know it’s normal but I feel so dejected and imposter-syndromey. When I get rejected from a non dev job it doesn’t make me question my ability, but because this is the first time sending out dev resumes it’s so daunting and I feel useless😞5
-
@dfox @trogus can the notifications area be split between +1'd comments and rants and new comments? Or the ability to remove selected comment thread notifications? Cheers. Great app btw5
-
I am driven by my love for this industry and wanting to do everything to the best of my ability.
Being a strong advocate for quality i am always on the look put for new practices and finding new ways to improve my code.
If you consider a project 'done' then you gave up on it.1 -
The ability to look at uncommented legacy code and read the thoughts of the developer when he wrote it
(seriously, comment your shit!) -
"Top Neural Network Projects for Beginners 2020"
1. Selfdriving Car with Ability to Transform and Fly To Mars in 6 Days4 -
@dfox @trogus I work in a dept with hundreds of developers. I’m sure a lot of people on here do too.
Why isn’t there an “refer a friend” option on here? You know like the ability to invite someone to the community from within the app.7 -
when you have one of those days where your mind constantly blanks out and your ability to focus is null...
-
The people. I find devs to be (obvious generalization) prone to: not take criticism, not understand the difference between fact and opinion, not understanding that it is perfectly acceptable to change your point of view when presented with new information that will conflict with what you currently believe in. It is a sausage fest brought to you by eons of very fragile male ego in the making, and many other qualities that were very much diluted in a lot of the other fields I have worked on: from retail (shitfest) to import/export all the way to military (another shitfest, for different and rather dangerous reasons).
I have met some amazing people in the field, don't get me wrong, but the quirkiest of mfkers i have met make me believe that maybe I AM the one that does not belong in the field (top kek).
On a more technical side, basic stuff like reading comprehension, attention to detail, the ability to translate complex problemd to pieces and that interconnect among the themselves, the ability to understand the grand mathematical scheme of things, the ability to be patient and despite what the above generalization would have you believe...the ability to communicate with other humans with tact and understanding as well as a spirit of collaboration, etc etc, are definitive traits to consider if you want a career in software development that leads above just being a code monkey.
Shit like that.8 -
Why would someone block the ability to inspect a website? Like I just found one but he forgot to block ctrl + u. He also blocked ctrl + shift + i.13
-
The ability to remember exactly where I was in the code and what I was thinking when I come back to it.2
-
Is it so much to ask for ability to do my job remotely. I work on a fucking computer, I can do this shit at home. I don't need to drive 50 miles there and back to do my job.
Flexibility is a thing.5 -
"Work hard and be nice to people. No one is born with the ability, and no one owes you anything. If you want to do something, start small and build it up. Then keep doing it!" - Jon Hicks1
-
How do you judge the ability of the candidates during the interview?
Sometimes I find it hard to score their ability. I have seen some candidates with x years on paper yet does not know git more than push and pull.
Also there are few who didnt do very well at the interview, however we hired and doing quite well at work.
(As I also had a hard time getting a job before, I sometimes feel bad to reject some who seems to have good personality but didnt do well at work)5 -
I have an uncanny ability to--in the middle of coding--open a tab on the browser and type just about anything on the search bar and go on to what I am starting to call a "link binge".
I pretty much bounce around the internet reading about random (not even useful, always) shit and end up wasting hours. -
Sure go ahead throw me off a bridge into a task thats completely out of my ability in an area I have no experience or understanding almost completely unrelated to the role in which I applied for.2
-
I'm mainly a Java guy but JS ability to pass a function has a parameter to another function makes me feel like god.5
-
Anyone wanting to improve OpenSSL fulltime?
Understanding of Cryptography or ability to write secure code are not required...
https://openssl.org/blog/blog/...4 -
I fucking hate Dockers for windows because you have to run hyper- v for Dockers to work and that kills the ability to use 64 bit vm's in virtual box.
WTF !!!!6 -
Any computer assemblers not giving to their consumers the ability to choose what OS they want on their machine.2
-
Me: If humans lose the ability to hear high frequency volumes as they get older, can my 4 week old son hear a dog whistle?
Doctor: No, humans can never hear that high of a frequency no matter what age they are.
Me: Trick question... dogs can't whistle.3 -
Dear [not so senior] software engineer:
Your strong opinions do NOT directly correlate nor contribute to your ability to influence and inspire others.
Be a mediating and conciliating force in your team.8 -
"Here is one of the few effective keys to the design problem — the ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraints as possible — his willingness and enthusiasm for working within these constraints. Constraints of price, of size, of strength, of balance, of surface, of time and so forth." - Charles Eames
-
Ability to ask the right question the first time.
Sometimes the hardest part of development work is first understanding the question that’s needed.. the answer isn’t typically hard to formulate from there. -
I've got it! truly successful developers have the ability to give generic ambiguous answers for every issue ever raised.2
-
Do you guys ever feel like you lose the ability to be objective about your own work. I've looked at my website for so long now, I don't know if I think it's good or not...5
-
Sometimes I feel like my motivation to learn and expand my knowledge is in direct conflict with my actual ability to learn.1
-
Ability to handle context switching (jumping between tasks and interruptions) like it didn't even happen.2
-
That moment during your internship when you work on a project using a framework you're not familiar with, with no doc, and absolutely no comments, and you find a file with 1.3k lines of code without the ability to contact the previous dev4
-
An alternative OS for phones able to be installed super simply without flashing or unlocking the bootloader, similar to how easy it was to jailbreak am iPhone years ago. It would also have a focus on privacy and the ability to turn off and on as much functionality as the user wants1
-
How do you teach non-technical coworkers to trust you're doing your work to the best of your ability? You know the type, they're used to having everything measured by simple numbers. Number big = good work. Number small = bad work or slacking off. The moment they run into something that doesn't work like this, their heads explode.4
-
the ability to recognize when someone is better at something than you might be the most valuable skill of all
no glass ceilings, just exponential growth at every opportunity10 -
I didn't realise that so many people in a dev social space cannot differentiate SE from CS...
Also, lecturers should have some mandatory teaching training, just because you have an area of expertise, doesn't inherently imply an ability to teach the material to the students. Powerpoints, and endless incoherent monologues are the bane of my existence2 -
"I find that when someone’s taking time to do something right in the present, they’re a perfectionist with no ability to prioritize, whereas when someone took time to do something right in the past, they’re a master artisan of great foresight." - Randall Munroe
-
The ability to start my projects and finish them.
Like for real I have a bazillion ideas yet none was even started, and the few exceptions that were started are unfinished...1 -
Every now and then the front end guys try to slip in some backend code. When I notice it weeks/months later I start questioning my ability only to realise it was their shit hacks and not mine
-
I stopped using keyboard predictions/suggestions because I started to lose the ability to type on my phone and even the ability to spell some words.
The less you have to think about something the more you'll forget.1 -
Height of my career would be ability to travel and work from anywhere in the world without having to worry about finances or restrictions.
My IRL backgrounds will be better than Zoom backgrounds.5 -
"Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."
This is good to remember this one once in a while...3 -
1. power - ability to decide about other people future
2. religion - ability to promise life after death
3. entertainment - ability to make people feel something
4. money - ability to enslave people
power + religion + entertainment + money = life
Probably I got no life.6 -
Been working on a small collab with my 3 mates
It's just one guy who's doing all the heavy lifting
I chime in with a 3-4 line modification every day or so
The other two are afk
It's chugging along just fine..
I feel like a garbage can in front of this guy's coding ability1 -
"In the field of psychology, the Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in w/c people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability."
Sounds like my coworker to me. If it doesn't work, he blames others. WOW1 -
No need for sleep or food, fluent knowledge of all languages, no code errors, and ability to socialize with other humans.
-
If I can’t find software I’m looking for it I don’t like the options I can just make it, it gives me the ability to automate tasks, it’s fun and it gives me a logical outlet.2
-
I have a feeling that one of the most valuable skills I have yet to learn is the ability to drink coffee.
-
I dont understand the Log4j vulnerability.
Isnt the ability to execute code a feature they added so that you can add dynamic data to the logs?
If it is a feature then isnt it written in the documentation?
Is the problem that a lot of companies forgot to sanitize the input before logging it?23 -
“Computer programming is like the ability or skill to see what Picasso saw from all the different angles at once” - Erik Naggum
-
Everyone I know chilling and shit.
As a developer and having the ability to work from home I am being pushed more than usual and I think it is because of no commute time I am working more now a days.5 -
University switched to Office 365. Just realized they implemented "Focused" inbox mode that auto filters messages microsoft deems less important. It filtered 3 important emails from last week. Just give us back the ability to make our own rules and filters again!!2
-
When the „Senior“ of your colleague only stands for this
- knowledge of ancient technologies and practices
- Speed of a pensioner
- ability to learn like a dementia
- John snow knows more about coding the he does
This is not the senior you are looking for3 -
The ability to automate my day, create my own apps and modify open source ones to fit with my conditions :)
-
Oh boy, please don't fuck a girl in public place! Her scream really violated my hearing ability!
Anyway I'm inside my room. The sound is fascinating loud.3 -
A language with the ability to write in two different syntaxes is nice until you start mixing the two..
Yuck1 -
This was meant to happen eventually with this lock-down and WFH thing. In the beginning everything was fine but then my brain has completely lost the ability to distinguish between work place and home.
I am neither able to work properly or rest/sleep and productivity is out of the window.3 -
I feel so overwhelmed. I feel like I'm never going to actually learn everything about programming. I feel like I'm just going to learn some new API every time I want to do some thing. I feel like I'll lose the ability to do basic programming. I feel like I need a cup of coffee.3
-
I wish I had the ability to survive on as little sleep as the people on here. I cannot function without at least 5 hours of sleep. And yet, I constantly get only around 3.5.
It's not even that I'm doing something interesting so late at night.1 -
After a while of functioning as a dev, I've learned one of many lessons:
The amount of experience you have does not correlate with your expertise, but it in fact correlates with the amount of absolutely broken shit you've seen and your ability deal with it. -
I lost my faith in my dev career after 3 months of graduating college and into a full time job as a backend developer.
I learned nothing in college that was beneficial for me at work. and I felt like I was pushed into a sea with sharks and tsunami and without the ability to swim.5 -
Repair printers... Somehow writing code translates to the ability to fix any printer problem in their minds.2
-
I'm slowly realizing that my ability to build apps does me know good when I can't design and figure out what to build :/
How do you even learn the creativity I see on places like behance?!10 -
To be able to actually write useful tests BEFORE starting to code, which I guess is really asking for the ability to have a clear set of requirements and a complete mental model of the problem at hand3
-
a few ideas for the future:
1) When you have just unlocked the ability to use a new item for your avatar send a notification i.e.
"XXXXXX just +1 Your comment, you can now get a pet tiger!"
or
"XXXXXX just +1 Your comment, you can now choose a new t-shirt"
2) Rant categories, i.e. Clients, colleagues, OS, jokes, !rant etc...
3) the ability to view more then the last 30 rants of a users profile1 -
The ability to find a cushy job with comfortable pay, benefits, and security. I don't want much, I just want to not have to need much ever again.
-
Wishing their was an ability to save images and gifs for sharing later....
I know we can share rants but sometimes sharing things as images are easier then a dev link -
Put down another developer because of not using the dark theme or for not using the “latest and greatest” IDE! Like it makes a difference to anyone’s ability to develop 🙄1
-
Thank fuck for the ability to decompile java .class files. Tried to use tar and overwrote the source file :0
-
Back in the days, i was on my way back home, after visiting my wife who brought our little son to life, it once blew my mind.
The terminology "inherit" is complete bullshit.
Why is that?
Because, a child isn't able to do anything the parents can, immediately.
It has to learn every single ability from it's parents or who knows else.
Maybe a kid won't be able to learn a specific ability from it's parents at all.
Furthermore, a child doesn't have a single parent.
There are always mom and dad.
Ok. Besides that, there is the option of a solo parentship, if a woman decides to breed based on frozen code ;) -
There should be a dev superhero. Like DevFace or Dr. Debug! And his special ability would be sth. like RealWorldInjection.
time.stop ()
car.engine.speed += 500
food.make ('Cheeseburger')
So many possibilities 😆😃 I would buy a ticket for the movie!2 -
"The best predictor for a software engineer's career trajectory is grit, the ability to handle discomfort, and operate in a perpetual state of uncertainty." -- Gunnar Kudrjavets.7
-
Fuck you MATLAB and your shitty inefficient for loops. Now I have to rewrite most of my code to use matrices instead of structures cause you take so long. Fuck you and your stupid ability to scale my neural network.....who needed sleep anyway6
-
I'm quite self conscious about my programming ability. I think I'm sub-par and I always find myself out of the loop when my peers start talking about projects. What should I do to improve?7
-
I've spent 6 hours on a discord bot using a language I have no experience in and I have got it to a good foundation. Gotta say im pretty impressed at my ability to google..1
-
What skills? 😂 Jokes aside, a few situations cause me to question myself, one is reading rants on devRant.
I always start questioning myself when I see others code, it inspires me but sometimes also makes me question my ability.
Last thing that often makes me question myself is reviewing all these requirements for jobs. -
The client has been working with MySQL his whole life, wants me to make a front end for a site but insists on making what he calls the backend in my terms the database himself. So he wants the ability to drop and add rows, tables from the database itself somehow implemented, any ideas?6
-
The ability to sudo kill all the idiots that point a deprecated function to another deprecated funtion that points to a deprecated function. Smh.
-
Xcode: took away the ability to manage multiple windows as documents; everything is a half-assed safari browser window that neither works like Mail nor like Safari.
Xcode: took away the ability to have variables in the debugger in separate displays, now it is a single basket of eye-bleeding variable/data spew.
Xcode: took away the ability to modify variable values in the debugger, it's just broken and lets you think you can but reverts the value.
Xcode: took away the debugger's ability to modify the execution pointer. You can't move the current line of execution to the previous line, the line past the current line, nothing.
The same internal human virus that manages the Alzheimers 'upgrades' of macOS Server seems to be managing the Xcode debugger, more aptly named now "Xcode stepper" cuz it makes a lot of motion but goes nowhere fast.1 -
I seem to have this impressive ability, where I can manage to absolutely nothing for hours, and still be fine with it... I believe I need to be more productive, but I can't seem to find any reason to1
-
This aint a rant but can you guys recommend me a game to pass time?
Id like to have a
Strategy game
Realistic, but not europa universalis realistic
Fun to play
Around 30min/match or ability to save
Windows is ok
Not neccessarily multiplayer, i travel quite often3 -
I am new to programming. I know the syntax very well in Java. How can I improve my logical thinking , problem solving ability that can land me in a decent job ?8
-
I'd like the ability to convince my teammates to gradually work on a project rather than working obsessively on it the day before it's due. I don't like waiting for the last minute to get things done, I like finishing things early so I'm not stressing myself out.
-
Ability to stop time, it would give me enough time to finish my extra projects, catch up on my sleep, and always be finished ahead of schedule.
-
The ability to create something, something useful. Software is the intersection of artistry and invention. Honestly, why do anything else?
-
The ability to vertically align in css correctly. On my first try.
That would save me a world of headaches... 😒5 -
I see bad data and thought to myself, "I'll be able to fix this with a simple regex." A month later, I'm still finding new data patterns. Never give users the ability to store all of their data in a huge textarea box where they can make stuff up.2
-
What if life was on git? Where you can simply create new branches of it, stash shit, remove dumb people with dependencies and finally the ability to turn back time with this version control.5

I’ve developed a love/hate relationship with wkhtmltopdf.
I’ve also apparently lost the ability to sleep properly.
These may be related things.11 -
How has weed affected your ability to code short term and long term? And is there anyone who codes while high? What about CBD?7

So my client wants us to build a Photoshop/Illustrator-like canvas, with features such as ability to drag and drop multiple elements, resize them, etc. The project is web-based.
Any idea how to implement that? Are there any existing libraries that I can use?4 -
My dev area of focus? Frontend web, and always trying to lean more towards CSS and UI/UX than to javascript.
Why? Because I discovered that I'm a designer with zero ability to design, so with CSS I can at least implement other people's beautiful designs. -
Has anyone tried Flutter? The kind of UI you can develop with it looks cool and functionality like the ability to hot reload makes it tempting.
I had it set up since a couple of months but never got the time to learn more about it.1 -

Learning Philosophy.
It is the most important thing for anyone to do to.
Everyone has one either implicit or explicit.
Learning metaphysics, and then more specifically epistemology has greatly increased my ability to process new information and build better models of the world around me. -
The ability to track all deliveries in real time using gps of the exact location is sort of creepy. Just spend about 10mins watching my dasher seemingly lost and trying to locate the restaurant...
But sorta feels like being an overlord watching his serf do his bidding...1 -
Ooooh man, I wanted to tell this to someone but never got the chance.
If I could choose, I would get the ability to comprehend something just from seeing it one only time and never forget about it for the rest of my life. Instant learning anything and never forgetting? I can't think in something better than that.1 -
Really starting to reconsider being a game developer, I can never seem to get anything past engine prototyping. So many idea's, so many concepts, I have the ability to build it but I can't get past the first hurdle and it's really bringing me down...

It seems which the crazy enterprise microservice project which I'm doing (an awful distributed monolith splitted in 10+ microservices, hard to test and requiring continued context switching and running on an unreliable platform) has finally won over my brain.
It's so boring and frustrating to work with which I lost all my ability to focus, I used to be able to program well even under significant distress but more than two years of continued boredom, repetitive tasks and frustrations destroyed my motivation and with that my ability of focusing died. It doesn't matter if I'm at home or in the office, my brain is like a car stuck in neutral gear and I struggle to focus in every task.2 -
There was a small exhibition in our school. I made a retropie arcade with the ability to play them physically with gpio.

Having to work with requirement analysis, attending to worthless meetings, acting like a project leader from time to time and developing in two projects in parallel really fucks with your head. Feels like this is hurting my ability to progress in code a lot. Anyone having the same situation?1

1: be able to fulfill my wishes without needing a dev genie, nor be bound to its rules
2: get an infinite number of wishes
3: be able to read minds without the need to see the person (to make understanding client requirements easier)
4: get the ability to find a solution for any problem
5: get a brain that doesn't forget anything, and can process multiple tasks and thoughts at once
7: change societal opinion, so that working is bad, and staying home 24/7 playing games is good and deserves a reward
8: get the ability to convince people and be socially acceptable
9: understand women
I can go on but that's all I can think of for now4 -

Dear ranters,
Keep in mind that while ranting on a topic the human mind's ability to write a long sentence with perfect wording will decrease slightly, so my sincere request to Grammar NaZi's is Fuck off bro..

@dfox @trogus Thanks for the update. Can you look at adding the ability to view images in Landscape mode? That might allow one to view finer details especially on a small phone. The ability to zoom in could also be a bonus.1

What is the point of https://pusher.com/sessions ? It's just like youTube, but with no ability to comment. I think the conversation in the comments is half of the content for developer talks. :/

Best part of being a dev?
The ability to browser through the file system of online c/c++ compilers 😅 -
As free software I guess you have to not be pedantic, but still felt like this was unnecessary when I feel like I having nothing to do with this political change nor will I have the ability or inclination to actively do something about it.3

! Rant.
Lots of hate towards WordPress, which I understand as I avoided using it for years, but what is your preferred alternative.
To qualify, the alternative must have:
-An 'as good', simple post/page administration interface
- similar abilities regarding shop/blog and payment solutions
OR
have the ability to integrate these features for a reasonably proficient developer.8 -
Covid gave me the ability to be really productive from home - work on personal projects and collab on projects - from all the ideas I had for lock down fitness was the one that was let slip due to too many projects I wanna build.1

I've been a dev for more than half my life now and it still kind of surprises me the ability of typing fast and precise without looking at the keyboard.
I know it's silly but is a pretty neat self-taught-through-practice ability.
Good for you, everyone who types without looking at the keyboard. -

You know what grinds my gears?
When someone complains about an issue, then bypasses it and ruins your ability to test. Sure, you can recreate it to the best of your ability, but if the issue is very specific, you're screwed (browser, data in prod, etc). -

looking for suggestions for a self hosted CMS. I tried Ghost, and it looks real nice, but there's no option to have just 1 section be private, you can only make the whole thing private. I tried Drupal but honestly it's just way too complicated for what I need, and doesn't look very aesthetically pleasing.
basically, here's the features I'm looking for:
- ability to set privacy/access control on a per-page or per-section basis
- Markdown for content editing
- ability to use regular HTML when needed
- ability to upload content via an API (so that I can publish documentation via my gitlab CI)4 -

Just a thought. Writing a program then clicking run, and your code runs first time, should be something that becomes more common place as one improves their coding ability, now that we call development. To be always surprised when that happens, almost seems to say that such is a matter of luck.3

I fucking hate Lodash. You don't need a fucking library to access an object property you moron. It's a native ability in JavaScript. Not my fault you can't figure out how dot notation works.1

I’m really loving ChatGPT’s ability to take a natural language request and turn it into code. It’s not perfect but it speeds up the process so I can get down to tweaking and perfecting things. What have you made with it?4

I continue to firmly believe that psychological abuse can in the long run create incredibly strong and confident people, that those who become depressed as a result of being abused simply haven't developed the ability to use everything for the better, and that bullying can encourage the psychologically-abused to use everything for the better.1
