Customer :Can you build a system that rates our product by XYZ standard?
Us: Sure!
*time passes*
Us: Ta-da!
Customer: Okay, here are some good and some bad products!
*products get rated shit to supershit*
Customer: No, that's wrong. Some of these are as good as we can, they should be rated best!
Us: okay, we offset the results.
*products get rated good to barely okay*
Customer: Great! Can you sign that the system rates by XYZ Standard?
Us: No.
Customer : But we paid you to rate by XYZ standard!
Us: By XYZ standard your products are bad, you can either have your products rated by standard or pass the test.
Customer: Unacceptable!
Us: Improve production?
Customer : Not possible, the job is done when you rate the products good by XYZ standard.8 -

Spent 2 hours helping some kid learn python, he ended up using it to make DDoS products. I feel used and ashamed (':

Apple, I usually enjoy your products, but REALLY?!?! Why didn’t you design a mouse to be used while it’s charging?!?

Wrote a python script to fetch details of amazon products to monitor price differences.

So I'm very much not a fan of apple and their products.
I bought an iPod Classic (160gb) today (second hand)

So we, new interns, are having breakfast together. One of the intern brought this nice milk and cornflakes. Another intern started to talk about how she's allergic to dairy products and her hands become itchy when she eats any dairy products.
Then I said: "Oh, your hands gets itchy? I shit myself whenever I have anything related to milk."
Both of them packed their food and left in the next minute.
I hate myself.10 -
I think we were one of the tens of companies to actually pay for one of Apple's most obscure products.

We have an API available for our customers to integrate our software with their Webshop.
A client and their developer complained because not all of the products came through. I checked the products, the validation, the parameters, the database .. everything looked fine and I was scratching my head why these articles wouldn't come through (but it did work at my end).
After some time, I checked the request logs..
Apparently it wasn't quite clear for them that a loop is required with the 'skip' and 'take' parameters to create an offset for pagination. They only synchronised the first 500 products.. everytime..
We have a limit of 500 products per batch (take) for performance reasons.
They asked if we could increase this limit, because they have "a large range of products" (not really, only 800 or so and we have clients with more than 2mil. products..) Oh pls.. I've sent them a link to the PHP manual for a basic 'while' loop..2 -

With every new Apple product it seems that Jony Ive's job is reading the dictionary and finding less and less understandable words to be used in the next commercial to make the production process seem more and more complex although the result is the same device over and over again.

I wonder so many devs hate Windows then why dont we stop creating products for it and start migrating all major projects (like games and software) to linux.7

OsCommerce is literally the most awful piece of software ever. Granted, I'm migrating a version from 2007, but even still.
The admin area has a screen to set related products to a target product.
The page takes an age to load, even longer to save and is god awful to use from a UI POV.
Why may you ask?
The OsCommerce devs decided to display a flat list, which check boxes of ALL products in the database.
So for the site in question, that's a single list of 167,000 products, without pagination. Some of the worst development/design on a single page I've seen since last week when I inherited a god awful butchered Wordpress site :|

Well I dont have any worst teacher, I have been the teacher more than the student but I have a related.
Had economics last year of the equivalent to college.
We should find the optimal volume of products between 2 products requiring the same parts in different amounts.
Simple crossing point of two straight lines.
He failed our solutions because we did not draw a diagram.
Turns out he did not know of the straight line equation and did not understand how we got the solution without measuring with a ruler!4 -
"yeah, we want bundled products in our store, but we don't want to fill them in like such. Instead, you have to look at the product attributes, their values added in which sub sub sub category they're stored to automagically make such combinations. Also: of these combinations (that have no actual entity in the database) we want to be able to save images, descriptions, related products, etc."
I managed to fix it, but more than 50% of the time spent on this project was to explain to the customer why their combination wasn't working (they misconfigured the products), and writing a whole testing interface that showed the inner working of the algorithm, so they could debug their own products...
The worst part: we advised from day 1 not to take this road, but they had one "developer" who insisted on this approach because it would "prevent pollution in the database". in the end, we had to add 50-100 product attributes/values just to get the damn thing to work. -

4 - Launch SASS products overseas to get more 5x income

all afternoon to understand that one piece is bent and the extruder is a lot lower it should have been...

I disagree with the hate on MS on buying GitHub. Could you imagine if facebook decided to do that? Or Google? At least MS is straight up about its business model: give me money I'll give you products10

I would really like to know why Google decided that it will only show me video ads for one specific brand of cereals and freaking feminine hygiene products. I have a freaking google home and a chromecast, there is more than enough info for them to know that I am NOT a woman. I never searched for feminine higiene products nor talked about them. Like wtf Google.16
-
The one thing every programmer should be taught in college
The products you adore are built in 'Product companies' and the almost equally featured cheaper products you compromise on and use are built in 'Service companies'
It always about the classes vs the masses 😎 -
I know this will most likely cause an uproar here but I actually prefer the products I use be profitable to the maker.
That's because if the maker of the product is making money on it (with a sustainable business plan) then there is a higher chance they'll keep developing it.
On the other hand, if the developer is working on it from his own free time with now monetary incentive then there is a high likelihood they'll stop when they run out of money or time or whatnot.
So all in all, a company developing a profitable product is the best bet for stability IMO4 -

Howdy DevRant. Back again, took a year away from social media..
Is this place still fucked? I.e hating on Apple Products and everyone is inferior unless you use Arch + i3.5 -
I get amazed almost every work day by how buggy the File Explorer is in Windows 11.
Actually, it's the whole Microsoft experience, that never worked for me. Most products are not at all intuitive (e.g. Google Sheet UX > Microsoft Excel UX), some other products shouldn't even be released (e.g. I've tried Loop, which is supposed to be a Notion clone, but it's more like a cheap demo).
I really need to start insisting about Linux, so my employer allows me an installation (or at least they could provide a Mac, if Linux doesn't cut it)4 -
That moment when you consider never attending a certain lecturer's lecture, after he openly tries to shove Apple products down student throats... If only it was a two sided conversation.

I just realized something. So my company's whole release process and code management now run on mainstream tech products: Atlassian, Jetbrains, IBM and not in house/vendor crap1

Great how I’ve just started a new job, haven’t been given all the licenses I need to run the software, there are multiple products with little to no documentation (and by none I mean the word “Architecture” is all there is in one of the main products ReadMe file) and I’ve a year of this! How is a company that’s this big not in any way documented like! This is gonna be long 😑2

I started out as a data entry guy. I learned VBA because dealing with thousands of products in excel by hand was a pain in the ass. Am doing an online shop for some client as a side project. The client never requested a module enabling an admin user to manipulate listed products. Now this cheap genius wants to be able to login as a seller and manipulate whatever products they've listed. So I told the client it's not possible to do that because passwords are stored as hashes. Now, can you Guess who's storing clear text passwords ?

Crying right now. Tldr, feature demanded, never used. 8 months ago, bosses demand two features. Disable sync of products they choose and set a reserve quantity on products they choose. Cooking products in a weekend.
Setting up and printing a shit ton of spreadsheets in a minute with a VBScript.
Yep, every time. -
Okay so, I’ve recently started going through our products’ security postures and their teams’ related practices and processes. I knew things were in a bad state, but I have to admit I’m a bit anxious at how bad things are… and it’s not like nobody cared or anything, quite the opposite; the teams are quite motivated about cyber sec. It’s just that they don’t know what the fuck to do and where to start even if they did.
Okay, that’s my job to figure out the roadmap to improving their security posture and processes and help them implement it. If it wasn’t bad enough that there’s half a dozen products whose cyber sec roadmaps I need to prioritise and manage somehow, I heard this week that due to some organisational rearrangements, the number of products under my stern guidance will nigh on double at some point very soon…
I need a team. Give me a team.2 -
I honestly don't know how people use Apple products. I feel like Apple is so limited. I don't know maybe I am wrong because I have used nothing but Android my whole life....5

Why is it such a pain when I have to install all my external modules of Python for PyCharm? JetBrains products are cool, but this,... literally had to remember all the modules from scratch.1

When someone says that a company is Java/Python/Ruby "shop", they are implying that company sells those programming languages instead of its products. Would you call macys/nordstorm a cottonshop? See how ridiculous that sounds!2

Well editor? nvim
Vim that just works.
But actual IDE? Most certainly the JetBrains products. The very best code completion, code generation, error checker, etc... all that even in the open source Community Edition :) -
If I wanted good feedback for my products (especially if they were geared towards developers) I would scrap devRant and do some data analysis on how our products are perceived in raw form. Would be very raw and informative insight indeed because you are at the heart of raging innovation (raging innovation: when a developer is so pissed at a flaw in a piece of software they highlight or fabricate an ingenious feature or solution) and will help not only iron the kinks out but make a better product all together. Also, of course the good aspects would be lauded.
-
love people who comment on shit (blog, website, saas product) when they have never built anything of the sort themselves

Devranters, you should make your products available on local stores in Asia, esp India. Like on Flipkart. I seriously need a 'stress ball' 🤔. I read it can help me stress more. Hence rant more! Not a coincidence

What you like in products is what other humans like, because you're a human. Corporate money-making strategies are inherently anti-human. Thus, sooner or later, they will remove every feature you liked and replace it with bs1

I've started my business in amazon with dropshipping. And I'm using the dropshipping tool extension which simply makes .csv file with computed prices and things from the product search I've made in amazon. But still I have to check all the products one by one and delete the ones which are not eligible for selling. And it takes like 1 hours for 100-150 products and after that I only have 3 or 4 products left.
So I've made a program to automate this by taking the csv file and checking the products itself and deleting not eligible products . And now I'm thinking of selling it. Is it better to sell it with monthly plan like $4/month or to sell it for $50?2 -

I finally got the clarity on my relationship.
Atleast I think I did.
I am officially done with Microsoft. I mean the only useful and sensible products left are Outlook and Excel.
Funnily both the products have hit their maturity stage and now MS is trying to bloat them. But still to a reasonable extent.
What other MS products are worth touching? Wait.. I legit can't think of any now.
Next on tagret, Google and Apple. Lol
Perhaps only Apple product I ever want to interact with will be (future tense) Apple Music (well because lossless and the fact that that the product is the reason for existence of the company).
NGL Steve had the right vision on Music. They tagged things right in their iTunes catalogue. But then MTV happened.
And now Spotify is the new MTV. Fuck me in ass someone.
So only Google? Well I have already sold my soul to them. What's more remaining?8 -
What is it with companies putting me on their half assed legacy products that are critical but they won't commit enough staff and resources to improve them properly?1
-
Sent products a list of everything wrong with their requirements and why it would take an army to build (there are only 2 of us backend ninjas). Suddenly its crickets. No-one is replying me now. Suckers..

VP: We need to build a new platform for flexibility!
Architect: Let's do micro services!
One year later...
Now we have "micro services" in Elixir, Go, Node.js and PHP.
Not to mention our prehistorical products in Erlang and PHP...1 -
Aws' Lambda. Brilliantly done, easy to use, especially in conjunction with their other products. Except for the cost it's great!

does anyone else find it wild that there are hundreds or even thousands of products you've never heard of with over $1M+ ARR? this is just mind boggling to me4

Trying to come up with a name for a dev services/software products company. Fkin frustrating. Ideal name that I wanted was appmedium.com but it was taken as well as appsolution.com :/7

company restructuring is pain

After working on three separate products for a day I've realised I developed a new thing end to end development!

I finally wrote my exemption test for computer literacy(covers ms office products and basic computing theory ).never have to go to anything concerning that course ever again and got 93%+ for all the tests required to get exempted

The first company I developed software for had no coding conventions and it was visible in the codebase of almost all of our products. This is why I follow the coding conventions for every language I use.

I work at a corporation with dozens of different products and different legal units and teams working with different products. As many of the products are business acquisitions and not internally developed, they've retained whatever (cloud) architecture they had to begin with... some hosted on AWS, others on Azure and yet others on GCP.... Yet the core products are all on the same provider's platform, so all the documentation for some unexplainable reason assumes every other product is on that platform, too, and does not take into account interprovider communication problems, so integration becomes a major pain in the arse when the product you're working on (like mine) is not hosted on that one cloud provider's platform... Whole week I've felt like banging my head repeatedly to the wall.1

Do you think Microsoft buying GitHub would make a big impact on the Microsoft competitors who've integrated GitHub in their products?
-
Google is known for frequently removing features from its products and services. So much that they have been given the nickname "Gookill".
If only they removed the one feature that deserves to be removed.
Pull-to-refresh.3 -
I feel more excited creating my own products and an ecommerce store. No more jerky bosses. Of course now I have to do everything myself. Here's another iPhone case.

When grafic designer design a list of products where on top of the page is header with title, category description, big fucking image, big fucking category navigation and on second screen list of the products.
Just why? Why put the important stuff (products) on second screen? Just why? You have three asses of space, you fucker. You can put category list on fucking SIDE. How many time you did this shit?
What about multilevel categories when menu just show current category children? I need to go fucking back or what? FUCK YOU! Stick this stupid boxes into your ass and design real navigation.
What is so fucking great to having big ass monitors and design more and more one column websites, just why you fucking retard?4 -

Has any of you tried to launch their own e-commerce business and if so, was it successful ? Was it hard to find the products, the marketing, the ads ?2
-
Release team was recently disbanded, they handed off release management to the Dev scrum masters. The other day we had a weekly release for a product that uses a network service that is shared with other products. The devs didn’t know how to set up the build correctly. They had a purge setting on that removed the network service for products that weren’t being touched in the release. The end result was that the other products were inaccessible for an hour and a half! They eventually found their mistake, but we were lucky that it was outside of core business hours.
These devs need to learn how to work the build tools! Or maybe we should rethink getting rid of the release team. -
Thinking on selling products online. In the long run, Would you rather use wordpress+woocommerce or develop the whole thing from the ground up?2

At first i thought it was ok that Microsoft bought github.
But after using other MS products i an afraid.
