Me: *Watching a movie*
Main Character: "Oh no, we have to hack the CIA to figure out how this machine works! Hacker girl, do the stuff"
Hacker Girl: "Consider it done!"
Hacker Girl: *Opens Linux bash*
Hacker Girl: *types 'mkdir Hack_CIA'
Hacker Girl: "They have two-factor authentication in place, this is going to be a hard one."
Hacker Girl: *Types 'cd Hack_CIA'*
Hacker Girl: "I'm in!"
Friend: "Wow, so well done, so realistic!"
Client: "Perfect! How did you do this so quickly?"
Me: "I used a library"
Me: "I'm still debugging. It will take some time"
Client: "Well, it has already taken too long...I can hear Mozart in the background. Maybe you need to go to a library to get some quiet and get it done fast. Visit the one you used yesterday."
Me: "Library?...Ah, I meant plugin...like, code...a library is a bunch of packaged code"6
Boss decided to limit Wi-Fi access only to company computers.
Ended up blocking everyone, including himself.10
Today I learned.

I'm impressed, well done4
Dev: this task is done, can I put it in review and do something else?
Me: sure, of course.
Dev: cool, just be aware I'll make some changes to it later.
Me: ... wait, then it's not done.
Dev: no it is, I just need to re-read it and make some changes.
Me: yeah, so it will be done when those changes are made.
Dev: but I don't know what those changes are.
Me: ... I get that ... but ... ok I'm extremely confused. Why do you think it's done.
Dev: because I've written everything I need to and I'm happy with it.
Me: ok so why do you want to make changes.
Dev: I don't.
Me: ... ... ... ... you ... you are really not being clear. If you don't want to make changes, and you are happy with it, why are you planning on making changes later ... after marking the task as done.
Dev: well if I re-read it and see something I don't like, I would like to change it.
Me: ok, so re-read it as many times as you like and make as many changes as you like. But don't mark it as done until it is done.
Dev: but it is done.
Me: no it's not.
Dev: it is, look.
Me: ... yeah looks ok at a quick glance.
Dev: ok so I can mark it as done?
Me: are you going to make more changes?
Me: then no.
Me: BECAUSE ITS NOT DONE.
Dev: ok maybe I'm not explaining it clearly.
Me: ... we can both agree on that. Ok so to summarise, we don't mark something as done until we have stopped touching it. We don't half finish something and say it's done and comeback to it later. We mark it as done when we are happy with i.....
Dev: but I am happ.....
Me: *raises hand* I repeat, if it's done, we lock it away and stop touching it. If someone reads it and complains, we can come back to it with a new ticket. But it's not done until we think we are ready to send it on.
Dev: I am ready to send it, I just may want to change it.
Me: ... ... ... ... ... due to a new policy implemented just now, we are only allowed to send 1 email to a person each week. So unfortunately we can only send on 1 copy. So when you have that 1 copy, let me know.
Dev: ok, let me re-read it a few more times then.
Me: there you go.32
Client: "Hi, there's a problem with this link"
Me: "How odd, I'll take a look right away"
-- 19 minutes later --
Client: "Has this been fixed?"
Me: "I'm working on it currently"
Client: "OK please let us know when it's done"
Me: "I will do"
-- 2 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, is this done?"
Me: "I've just told you I will let you know as soon as it's done"
-- 5 minutes later --
Client: "Hi, sorry to hassle, but is this done yet?"
Me: *starts twitching*
Me: "I am working on it and I will let you know when it's done"
Client: "OK, well don't worry about it, it doesn't really matter"
Designer: can we put the popup at the top of the screen?
Me: You mean op top of the navigation?
Me: I sure can. Would be stupid to block off the site navigation with a popup, but definately possible.
Designer: Cool, let me know when done!
Me: I am done.
Designer: Well now I can't click on the navigation anymore.
Me: That's correct. Let me know when you want to change it again.14
devRant/me are featured in a pretty cool new electronic developer magazine. There's some neat articles and it's pretty well done I think. You can check it out here: http://stackify.com/bb_emag/...10
FUCK HELL YEAH! I'm done with my FUCKING THESIS! I just handed it in - that filthy time eating piece of blood sucking papershit! God yes! I'm proud and relieved as fuck!
Got really sick as well! Fuck the stress! Fuck everything. I'm just gonna play Witcher 3 all day long with some nice cup of tea !28
President of my employer: how long do you thing it will take to complete x type of migration?
Me: I don't know. We've never done one.
President: well how long do you think it will take based on your experience?
Me: I don't know. I've never done one.10
Just saw a microsoft ad saying:
“Six reasons for switching to SQL Server on Linux“
Well done microsoft...7
I love coming home from classes to get some work done on my setup.
My thought is; if I'm going to be sitting here for hours at a time working, may as well make it a comfortable environment.45
00:00: Yeah I'll change that now, it'll only take 5 minutes.
00:05: well that's done, better do this too though before I forget.
02:20: well that escalated quickly.. Better grab 3 hours sleep while I can.
The moment that I finally understood OOP.
Several teachers had already given up explaining it over and over again but one classmate took a few hours to explain.
Suddenly, after a few hours, that AH-HA! moment was there!
I've done as much OOP programming as possible since then and have explained it to others who were struggling with it as well 😊35
Got to love when the client has no requirements, other than, they want a website and they need it done as soon as possible.
Well in that case.... Here's your website.
- We need an android app. Can you do this?
+ Never done that, but I can try.
- Do you even know Java?
+ Not really, but I'll learn fast!
- Any OOP experience?
+ Well...I know CPP.
- Will you give me a prototype tonight?
+ Don't know. How about tomorrow?
+ *makes a prototype in couple of hours, becomes a Java developer*
Just like that.9
Manager: "How long will this take?"
Me: "Er... it depends."
Manager: "Depends on what?"
Me: "Well, if the reactive hyperflux core's external dampeners are--"
Manager: "Yeah, yeah, whatever just get it done."
Me: "You got it boss."2
College placements, one of the leading tech companies comes to hire people on day 1, I miss the first round coz I overslept, woke up and realized the test started an hour ago, finally went in after the test was done. They still let me take the coding test but with reduced time, and kept talking to themselves that if this guy gets through, I'm fucking done with placements. Managed to do well in the test and then proceeded to the interviews, aced the interviews and was offered a job. People at work still call me "that guy who turned up late and still got the job"6
Fell like I can finally vent this now I've calmed down.
Me: You've fucked the tree again
Junior: No I haven't
Me: It says there "Fixing merge conflicts"
Junior: Well it wasn't me I wouldn't have done a merge
Me: It has your name next to it...
Junior: Well that commit wasn't there a second ago
Me: it's dated for Friday...
Junior: Well if you hadn't committed to master and blah blah blah
Me: We'll if you knew know to use git we wouldn't have this problem.12
Hate it when i spend hours upon hours implementing an algorithm/program (in C++ btw) and whenever I show it to someone... They r like
Them: Huh... Spent so much time to display JUST that?!
Well... Only programmers understand the amount of time required to get things done...9
tl;dr I need ideas on how to warn the next dev(s) that the company is a dumpster fire.
For the past week (actual time: three days) I've been writing documentation for work, since there isn't any. It's been okay, I guess. Certainly more interesting than anything else I've done at work in months.
I'm up to 10k words / 67kb of markdown, and I think I'm done. I could easily write another 30k words on everything, but I just can't care enough.
However, what I do care about is warning the next dev(s) about how terrible the place is to work, so I want to add little references or hints or other such things to my writing. To complicate that, there's a contractor dev who said he will edit the document to strip out my commentary and make it "friendly" for the next person. (I can kind of see why: I've been quite honest about the situation of everything, and it's pretty dire. If they read it as-is, they might just walk out the door. I certainly would have.) I'm also going to commit it to the repo, and afaik he doesn't have push rights, so he can't force-push and remove it. (and a force-push by someone else, adding my documentation immediately after I leave... that would be pretty fishy, too.)
Anyway, at someone's suggestion, I added a "three envelopes" reference in the access phrase generator section. I also wrote "Promises made outside of ES6 will not resolve" -- in the warning section of a document almost entirely about Rails. (because the boss has broken every single promise he has ever made me.)
What other hints and subtle warnings could I add?
(And hurry: tomorrow is my last day! ;3)16
> Get home for lunch, time to get some work done
> Fire up windows to program my keyboard
> WindowsUpdate, fine I can wait
> Reboot, grub rescue - no partition found
> Fire up a live CD, windows update nuked my linux partition (literally - now empty space instead of my previous ubuntu partition)
> Reinstall ubuntu
> Now stuck on «Loading operating system»
Oh well, I know what I'm doing tonight
> Pic related19
PM: Please get this done by tomorrow. It's just a small change.
Dev: No its not that simple.
PM: Why is it not simple? Please explain so I can understand.
Dev after a hard thought finally explains: blah blah blah
PM: Well, we have promised the client so please do this by tomorrow, thanks.
*opens a random website*
*chat pops up*
well done, going to make sure to never click your website again.4
Wow, well done Me, pretty successful robot here!
(In all fairness, the wheels don't fall off too much)12
Installing a new Debian VM/VPS.
Nearly done with all steps and decide to lay down.
Fall asleep and wake up half an hour later.
The grub option is on screen.
I am sleepy as fuck.
Accidently selected the manual option and just pressed enter at the screen where I have to enter the device name.
Well, let's install this fucker again.7
Product Owner: "Our definition of done is putting it on production. So you are only done if it's on production. Otherwise our sprint goal is failed."
So we put it on production.
After deploy, some content manager appears: "Why is the system doing things? I was told this should not happen today."
"Erm, we have put the feature on production as we are only done if it's on production."
"Well, yes. But it should not be live yet!"
Oh well. Communication, or the lack thereof, does never fail to amaze me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5
"I know you're busy with x, but could you help implement y? We need it done asap"
...a few days later
"Any update on x? No? What do you mean no? Well y can wait, lets finish x it shouldn't be taking this long"
Our working hours are from 9 to 6 which is the standard in Malaysia (I'm not malaysian )
Yesterday I came in around 10AM and my boss took me to his room as soon as I arrived.
Boss: If you were in school and you come late what do you expect to happen ?
Me: get punished, I'll compensate by working an extra hour today.
Boss: well our clients aren't available at your extra hour and I'm struggelling with a big client you're supposed to ship the rest of his site and golive today and he's freaking out
Me: yh well his site is done it just needs final QA before going live.
Boss: oh its done already?, cool cool. Anyway you shouldn't be late you're not Malaysian and being late doesn't run in your genes like them.
*ops manager (Malaysian) walks in*
*ops manager looks him in the eye*
*boss looks at the ground*
* me giggling while walking to my desk*2
My duck came in, along with his two capes, the stickers I forgot to ask for, and the note I requested.
In the special instructions box, I asked that they include a note that said something random, and they delivered.
"devRant ducks do dances directly downstairs daily"
Well done @dfox @trogus or whoever does the shipments, I'm thoroughly entertained :D8
So... an Italian government website published sensitive data of thousand of citizens, because they thought that it was enough to turn white the text color in order to anonymize the sensitive content of the files. Italy, 2019.
Source (in Italian):
Got the iPod and music synchronisation isn't working well with Linux (I've synced quite some iProducts and it always goes great so this is a new one for me).
Bought a windows pc a few days ago and haven't installed Linux onto it yet so booted it up, installed Firefox and then downloaded iTunes.
Nearly done with installing when an error message pops up and the entire fucker blue-screens. Now it doesn't boot anymore 😡
Go die in a fucking corner, windows.11
Me, Linux guy, who likes.. really likes..
Visual Studio Code.
👍Well done "Tiles Corp.".9
Requires windows 10 anniversary or later... So let use photo's that show it installing on vista...
Well done Adobe.9
I'm starting to fucking hate the word 'done'.
Boss: How's the spec coming along?
Manager: Oh, it's done.
Manager to me: Hey can you get it done?
Me: Why would you call it done? There's a days worth of work and it's only half done. Boss wasn't even rushing it yet.
Manager: Too late I've already committed it. I'm sure it's simple anyway. Just do it.
Manager: Hey is it done?
Noob dev: Yea it's done.
*Commits half assed incomplete sphagetti shit that breaks stuff*
Manager: Well done. Completed so quickly.
FUCK THIS SHIT.2
Fuck those clients which are surprised when they get an invoice when they ask you to do something for them.
I think it's as simple as:
- you know my hourly rate
- you ask me to do some work for you
- I give you an estimation
- you agree with the estimation
- I get the job done and show it to you
- you accept the edits/solutions
- I send you an invoice with less hours than estimated
- you agree with the invoice and pay
It seems that every step is going well, except the last one...
Well... fuck you too.13
"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...
Sales people... don't care *how* things work, as long as they get a tick against their name to show they've sold something...3
Client: How's our B2B data lookup platform coming along?
Me: All done, your clients can now search by first/last name as well.
Client: I just search "fuck" as first name and 5 results came up, our data is not cleaned up properly.
Laziest dev thing I've ever done.
An annoying "I-do-nothing-but-delegate-and-make-fuzz" manager proposed to create a new application with redundant functionalities, that would take me at least half a year to build.
Practically, the app would never be used and I didn't want to put effort in that monstrosity.
So, naturally I...
Pressure the right people, schedule numerous meetings, become the project manager for all internal applications and... I cancel the project.4
I'm doing code review. Unsure about the deadline, I ask my co-worker:
Me: "Guess I'm half through, when do I have to be done?"
Co-worker: "Well if you're half through, you are already half done."
Me: "No shit, Sherlock."
Why is it that people not in development seem to assume that we have infinite hours to get everything done?
I'm so fucking sick of being given 5,000,000,000 tasks and a day to do them in and when they're not done (even after saying there's no way they'll get done), I'm the one who gets it in the neck.
Fucking management bullshit. I can't be fucking project manager for 5 fucking projects as well as lead developer for them all AND manage office shit AND handle all the fucking tech shit in the office AND keep track of what every fucking other person is doing/wants!11
IPod didn't sync well on my Linux machines so decided to give windows - in a highly isolated environment disconnected from the Internet behind a firewall and sandbox - a shot with itunes.
- during the installation it wouldn't detect the fucking harddrive multiple times (genuine unlicensed copy) and after the 4-5th time it's random-fuckingly recognized out of fucking nowhere; I didn't change shit.
- crashes (blue screen and freezes) multiple times during the installation, multiple retries and suddenly it works(?!)
- it took about 10 minutes (!!!!!!!) to install 10+ drivers for an iPod and an external hdd:
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
Installing seagate drivers... Done
Installing Apple iPod drivers... Done
WHY INSTALL THOSE FUCKERS 5 FUCKING TIMES?!
- iTunes installation fails multiple times without error code (unknown error occured, restoring to original state...),just said fuck it and clicked the shortcut after the ***th fail and it works just like this, THANKS FOR NOTIFYING ME (NOT)!
- iTunes has to restore the entire ipod, this was done with iTunes in the store I bought it already, thanks for nothing.
-restore takes 30+ minutes?!
-syncs the iPod 3 times afterwards.
*clicks close button*
*are you sure you want to quit? Sync in progress*
*oh shit, cancels*
*tries to import media library*
*seagate hdd suddenly not detected*
I'm fucking tired of this bullshit, windows and iTunes can go die in a fucking corner after getting ass raped while their genitals are being scraped off layer by fucking layer and dipped into fucking acid.18
Well, i have a few stories i would like to share with you :)
My neighbour asked me to fix her webcam.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a repair service .
Next time my neighbour forgot her Skype password. Se asked me to hack it for her.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a hacker.
My sister asked me to help her out in her program, because of some bug. Well, she is in the other part of the Country. But, i said, lets give it a try.
Well, it turned out to be some kind of mechanical remote scanner, with needed that exact same remote locally.
I told her: But I am a programmer, not a fictional remote signal scanner repairer.
My grandpa asked me, to copy his old gmail emails into his new laptop.
Well, i told him to log in. He logged in. Than i told him: It is done :D
Thanks for reading it :)4
You have to update Microsoft Visual Studio Installer 2017 in order to update Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Preview?!?! WTF!?! WELL DONE MICROSOFT!
Xamarin is 27GB, whaaaaaat?!?4
Boss just phoned me and told me of his great app idea. Says he wants the idea done and implemented by tomorrow 8AM. Meaning I have 8 hours to plan a project, design the app, and implement it.
Well, I'm boned.11
Well i this is the end.
Somebody implemented full raytracing in fucking excel.
Full movement and everything.
Im fucking done.
I cant even imagine how long did it take but oh well.
There is no turning back.
He did it already.
Link to the video in comments.
//This is not my video and i have no worked on this. Full credit goes to the guy.16
Today I left my job in which I spent these last 5 years.
My boss wasn't very pleased with me leaving the company today. But well, it had to be done
Now it's time to focus in freelancing and my own startup. Surely my work will be paid more accurately than these 5 years, one of the reasons I left.16
Robots done, for now! Well, the basics are done. Just fueling up at the moment :)
Tomorrow I'll put up a little gif of it moving around, but I wanted to get this out as soon as possible, because making physical things isn't my strong point, and I ran into a lot of problems
Shoutout to my school for having a free to use laser cutter2
Client: But why is it so expensive to host a website? I mean you could host Wordpress on a cheap like 10$/month webspace, right?
Inner me: Bitch, you have a fucked up Symfony 2.1 website that only runs on PHP 5.3 plus a Wordpress site, with a lot of updates not done, plus you have a huge traffic at peak times, like once a week
Me: Well you know, the services you are running require a lot of resources...4
Just started playing with Microsoft's Quantum Computing Kit and it's so amazing 😍!
Well done Microsoft!25
2nd interview today for a job. I thought it went well but I could tell one guy did not like me. They said they were done after 20 minutes. They told the recruiter I was not senior enough. I have been a dev since 2001. I answered all of their tech questions. Really frustrating.3
*based on a true story*
Co-worker: Let's release it
Me: Wait, I want to add just a little feature
Co-worker: Is it necessary?
Me: Trust me
*5 minutes later*
Co-worker: So, have you finished implementing your "little feature"?
Me: Yeah, well, it's done. Maybe.
Co-worker: What the hell have you done?
Me: MAYBE I've added 647 lines of codes to the file to implement my little feature, MAYBE it doesn't works and MAYBE the entire project is compromised
That's an impressive algorithm there, cdkeys. You found nothing in 2ms.
Success to me is silence. No phone calls, no emails, no "why doesn't this work?"
It's when you made something that works in the background, almost invisibly, that others could take for granted but that they also don't bother you with because it is still working as designed.1
It's sad that such a primitive thing as a DDoS attack can bring down a huge chunk of the internet. Well done Dyn for being so unprepared.7
I have just ported latest TWRP for 6 years old device.
Just need to make official support and well im done then,1
Android really gets on my goat. They are moving things so far that they are actually doing more damage than good.
Upgrade my build tools to v25? sure! Now all my BLE code is borked, thanks for nothing.
Go to the documentation? Lol, that's deprecated fool!
At least now it can all fail to function in Kotlin, a wrapper for Java 6. Instead of keeping your tools up to date you just create another layer of obfuscation. Well done, so proud.3
Manager comes to me:
Hey fool, when will you deploy your code in test environment?
Me: Yeah, there's this test which keeps on failing. I'll deploy as soon as I am done with it.
Manager: Well then just remove the test which is failing and deploy now.5
"Installing... We'll be done in just a moment."
Well, Microsoft, it seems that you and I have a very different understanding of the word "moment".3
I guess I'm taking the piss.
I just spend half an hour wondering why a unit test failed; turns out all calculations were done correctly, just that -5 + 3 was being calculated and the test expected the solution to be -1.
Well, -5 + 3 does not equal -1 and I'm too stupid to add.
Half an hour. (-_- )2
Android 8.1 on Nypon ?
They said i was crazy.
Im not crazy i just want it to run 8.1 no matter what.
Bootanim reached. Android part mostly done. NOW just binder kernel shit and im done.
To be honest i expected just kernel screen and reboot. Well it got bootanim and then crash due to missing binder stuff in kernel.
Now this is going to work.9
Well done, Google Chrome, you ate most of my 16 GB of RAM! >:v
P.D. I said "most of" because of the memory allocation table5
Just watched Snowden
to check if Edward had completed his assignment that is supposed to take 5 hours but Ed does it in 40 min, top CIA director guy types:
Into computer terminal.
Pats Ed on back. Well done super hacker.
Apparently by opening a folder and looking at what files are in said folder you can confirm the success of a CIA exam.3
So I was finally done with the project, every feature was implemented the way I wanted it be, every piece of code optimized and well written, I was completely satisfied with my code and didn't feel the urge to add a "last little feature/optimization"...
Then I woke up 😭😭😭2
So I just had to pick the lock on my own bike because I forgot the key... Well done dipshit, well done.10
The curse of people working "Agile"
Me: So how do you guys work?
Him: Well we work agile
Me: So like scrum? Or how do you guys work agile?
Him: Weeeell.. We meet once a week and show eachother what we've done.
Me: soooo can you get this done by next week?
Other dev: well who knows what rabbit hole I'll fall down. There's no way to tell.
Me: can you just avoid falling down a rabbit hole? We have a deadline.
Other dev: oh ya there's no way to know for sure.
Me: ....... Can you please try harder
Other dev: I'm trying I can't.
This is the face of NPM right now.
So, Devon Govett (Parcel creator, hella lot of GitHub stars) offered to kind of standardize package.json, but faced nothing but angry NPM-CLI creator telling him that he’s a “rando from internet” and “why the fuck are you even speccing something, and why would anyone care”. No real professionally ethical discussion, no invitation to discuss things together with team, no even polite “no”.
Definitely the friendliest behavior possible, well done!
Well done, T-Mobile!
They have an iOS app to handle contract stuff. That app integrates their shop system via an internal browser.
The shop notifies me, that the used browser is not supported by the shop...
Oh and the browser is an embedded safari on iOS 12.5
Well done Google, well done.
I think you should really work on your password checking algorithm, or it may look as though as you are **purposefully** are trying to make it as easy as possible to hack your users' accounts. Well done.
I just typed in one word. ONE FRACKING WORD. The word is, you're going to love it, Buddhism. Wow. Apparently no computer can guess an EIGHT LETTER WORD that starts with a capitol letter.23
Well done windows a zero day bug that escalates privilege. Google was so pissed about it they released the info before Microsoft could fix it 😂8
😸:oh hi, i came in early to checkout this game, but i was just about to get off and start work.
😎:I'm not your boss. I don't caire what you do.
👺:I am your boss, and as long as you get the work done, on time, and done well, I don't care if it looks lie you are doing nothing but being paid to play games. If anyone does bother you about playing games at work let me and I will let them know to leave you alone.3
Anyone an idea? Trying to install proxmox on my HP Proliang again but no matter what I do, it can't find a bootable disk. I've done this about 20 times before (and that worked well) and I did change the boot order but I already set that back again.
Anyone? Help 😥11
Google Chrome scans private files on the computer without mentioning the user and without the possibility do disable this "feature". Google never announced this anywhere.
Someone (Kelly Shortridge, @swagitda_ on Twitter) found this randomly and confronted Google. It answered that this was only an AV scan and wasn't done more than once a week.
Well, THAT'S why I use Firefox. I don't trust Google, and again and again it gives more and more reasons for this mistrust.7
Well done firefox for not implementing some stuff from ES6, because you decided to do so. Isn't the releases of EcmaScript considered to be standards? I'm a Firefox fan, but damn, Chrome is so much more advanced.7
When a customer moans about a site not working in an old version IE. I bet they have their steak well done when ordering in a restaurant too.
Hey DevRant fam ❤️ hope everyone is doing well ! I just finally finished this extremely difficult semester and also my FINAL EXAM!!! no more exams but Projects!! honestly guys and gals this has been my toughest semester yet apart from the time I failed Discrete mathematics twice... and i feel as if i have done well 😁👏🏻.
Anyways guys i hope you’re all doing amazing Wherever you may be!
The Kind King himself
Co-Worker laughed at me for taking a task on their side project and only them have worked at it. FYI i've never worked as a Dev before and I have a really low knowledge of web developing. Well i finished the task in time and sent the pull request to one of them. Got a 'well done dude, high five'. Feels good man :)
well, i guess ill make some new years resolutions…
- finish dogecrypt. ive barely done squat and i dont even remember the name of the guy i was working with
- finish https://translationiteration.com (ITS UGLY!!!) if anyone wants to collab on some css, im open
- make an android game that’s FUN. something that’s addictive too.
- make something PROFITABLE. i want money.8
Lovely and thankful clients do exist!
Last week the client of our last project came to my desk to shake my hand and thank me for my well done work. Keeping in mind that I'm a junior dev and our company has around 3000 employees I was really flattered :)1
For the coming few months, refactoring my entire life. Everything will be redone with modularity in mind. So far it seems to be working well. Once the foundations are stable, I could start focusing further on the development of my Linux distribution. Hopefully that'll be done soon.6
I spent the last weeks rewriting a huge project which I had to hurriedly write a year ago. No comments, no documentation, spaghetti code. Part me was an asshole! But now I am done, all is new, everything is well commented, structured in classes with well defined tasks. Yay.2
them: "Is it done yet?"
wisecrack: "Not yet."
them: "How close do you think you are to being done?"
wisecrack:"Dunno. It's going smooth though."
them:"well do you think it'll be done in a few days?"
wisecrack:"Well I don't know. Depends on if you want to keep playing 20 questions instead of letting me work."
them:"Well I'm just excited."
Literal conversation I just had ten minutes ago.
Less excited each day I have to answer the same set of questions, sometimes multiple times a day as if I know the answer.
What do I look like, a professional developer?1
Well, here is another Intel CPU flaw.
I'm starting to think that all these were done on purpose...
After two weeks with Ubuntu - I'm done with this. I'm going back to Windows.
Why? Well, it fixes some Windows problems, but at the same time new ones are popping and they are even bloody worse.10
My colleague does not use git (well, not for much), hates all external frameworks, and when he sees my code he tells me "that's not how I would have done this", every single goddamn time. Aaand we are the only two developers in our company.4
Oh, it's finally done and works well!
Oh, let me just optimize that a little... And probably rename this...
5 minutes later:
Shit it does not work now.
10 hours of debugging later:
I'll fix it later
To all new devs:
Commit more regularly
Right now in a hotel room with really bad internet speed.
Well let's make the internet speed great again.
1mb/s ohhhh that's better then 100kbps as before.8
i remember how my father was angry at me, that i "only play games" on the computer. Cause what else can you do there? We had multiple wars about how much nobody will i be. Well I wasn't playing I was learning. Now i have my own family, got many life goals done. i dont consider me as nobody but my father still thinks of me as a young boy, at least he's sometimes proud. Sorry guys gad to lay it off. :-)3
Boss: I need to take a screenshot. How do I do that?
Me: ok just cmd+shift+3
Boss: I need it to roll with the page.
Me: I don't think that's how screenshots work.
Boss: I've done it before using a program.
Me: umm ok well if you have done it before then can't you do it again?
Boss: I don't know how.
Today my boss told me to work more properly, because the massive feature I'm working is only halfway done.
Well thank you very much, obviously it's only halfway done yet. I'm responsible for the backend and the development for the frontend started today, by another guy who was working on another stuff until now. And I'm pretty sure we agreed that I will only do the backend...
Thanks for the uncalled critique. Great way to make me feel like my work is not appreciated. This motivated me very much to work the whole on the integration.2
You ever have these days where you're just bored out of your mind at work and can't get anything done so you start bothering others?
Well today... [read more]5
Haxk20 starts a LineageOS build without applying most of the patches he should just to build most of the shit and then add them to build the rest.
Build goes without issues to 60%.
Wooooh NO NO NO NO NO.
This is not how this is supposed to go.
You are supposed to fail at 40% then error out and make me stuck on that error for a week or so.
Short version: The port is going suprisingly well and im scared of how well it goes. Im not used to this kind of shit when stuff goes that easy. But i suppose i should thank SONY for device trees and most of the porting done. I just have to edit it a lot to make it compatible with LineageOS.
And BTW LineageOS 17 when you are done and i get working build of AOSP 10 then im coming for you. Be scared.3
I mean, I really, really like Linux, don't get me wrong but I don't know if it's my Pi or something I've done but I've always gotten issues with it after a few weeks/months.
Everything will flow smoothly until it crashes, and it won't start the x server, and pretty much everything tells me there is a segmentation fault. A fresh install fixes the issue but I also loose all the stuff I've done with my previous install. Really annoying and I haven't found a definitive answer as to why this happens.
Well I feel accomplished today :) Got a lot done on my little devrant-widget project. I'm gonna try and make it open source soon, just trying to fix all this spaghetti code I created xD
Went into an ikea store. For a photobox. Also got one of their remote controlled light bulbs which can change light temperature I didn't know I needed before.
2€ photobox, 30€ for the bulb and its remote.
Well done ikea.5
I really appreciate the idea of unlocking items for avatars with a raising amount of ++s!
It's an awesomely elegant way to motivate devs without pushing them and keep them in the regular user base of devrant.
Dear sirs @dfox and @trogus.
You done a very fine job :)3
HP server BIOS update process.
Please insert here the BIOS file.
Please do not reload this page or turn off the server.
OK can do that.
Fucking site reloads on its own.
Firmware starts flashing after 2 minutes cause well i didnt want to risk it.
This is crazy.7
Legacy code huh?
Well i'd say it would be when i was workng on an old java app that was apparently written by a retard.
He had used strings to represent booleans for no apparent reason. As if that wasn't bad enough he would use different strings too:
Y N true false 1 0
He used them randomly too , y and 0
N and true
I sense it was done on purpose
Perhaps he knew he was leaving soon2
I've had a personal project (commercial idea) I've been meaning to get started on for a while, and today I started...
Kudos to the team at Microsoft, they've really gotten .net core and asp.net core to a fantastic place.
And the team at JetBrains have done an amazing job on Rider.
I've been able to get a docker container running SQL Server on linux, as well as Web API projects for an API and an identity server all running with local HTTPS and communicating quite happily, with barely an issue in sight.
Bodes well for the future I hope.
Now I just have to commit to the project and actually finish it 😂1
Well fuck me i thought working for a company was 1) i do work 2)company pays me. Not fucking spending 3 whole days running between government offices trying to get my taxes done because half of the documents can only be sent online and the other half can only be sent in person.1
Learning to code but must do website.
Must learn illustrator....
Can`t even select a fucking circle without it becoming a splatterod non sensical shapes.
Been at it for 2 weeks.
Boss/friend like. Hey i know its the holidays but lets catch up to see what youve done....
Me. Well... I can fuck up circles ;)9
Oh so day continued....
My boss just asked me before I left... You know that report we wanted automated, you said you'd get it done by today, is it done yet?
Me: well uh who dragged me into a PROD issue because no one else knows how to investigate... EVEN THOUGH I BUILT AND SHOWED U HOW TO USE THEM... SEVERAL TIMES. (no i didn't say this last but that's what went on in my head).
Oh and I figured out what the issue was...
Bought a new 1TB ssd from Intel for my laptop. The installation of the drive itself went perfectly, it works like a charm. But then I had to do a clean install of windows and ubuntu, and that's where things went wrong. The drive still works perfectly, but everything else has fallen apart. I've been fighting with them the whole working day and haven't got anything work related done. Well, a few more hours and I can head home and continue the installation with a few cold beers, that should help getting it done ;)1
I'm so fucking done today.
The VB project I ranted about earlier was apparently just the top of the iceberg of madness that is my workplace.
So the same ninjacoder who managed to code himself as a dependency in the VB project apparently had his greasy little fingers in a bunch of other projects around here.
A script for automating new workstation installs that went haywire last week had traces from this Omnipotent mastermind all over it. He got us this time with static urls and zero errorhandling.
Well played sir.
Getting so done with undocumented projects that I have to dig through several hours just to find and fix.1
I am well done, burnt and carcinogenic. The constant pressure to always produce, always post a profit, always increase, always commit, always stand-up and succeed is fucking exhausting and ultimately and totally unsustainable.
There are never any fallow years anymore, or days of rest...our dirt is dying...and the earth is weary and worn out. Antartica is getting green...grrrr, and my head is melting too.
Why the fuck can't we slow down a little bit?
I worked at a startup that indulged in pair programming thing. Where as a junior, you'd be partnered with a senior developer.
My mentor, always insisted on having shortest variable names possible, so that the "size of codebase" will be very small.
It was a nightmare going through his code and understanding what's he's done. Best part, no comments as well.
In a way it has primed me to go through any codebase possible.5
Having a hard time in an internal test of our app. I thought all okay, but there is some bug, every time. Internal test team, well done.
Well, this'll sound like my first rant but my boss did it again. working on implementing a new feature. but I got sick last week and took some time to recoup. well come into the office todat, tell him I'm going to finish it. he says okay. 3pm comes around and I go and ask him for some help on finishing it. he says "check out the repository, I already did it."
okay. I'm sick. you want it done. fine. that's cool. but you made me waste literally my entire workday doing something you knew was already completed? WTF?5
My Senior posts on LinkedIn about fostering a good work environment, but nobody in our office talks to each other and every time he comes in I get 45 trello cards about what I’ve not done right. Not a single time have I got a ‘well done, you’ve really taken initiative, you’ve managed to do something new without any guidance’
What’s the point in being on a juniors salary if I’m not being taught anything?6
GNOME-dev packages for Arch are 1/4 done.
Suprisingly they work quite well actually.
Settings getting new sound menu finally and it looks pretty sweet. Isnt merged yet but hey i wanted to try it out when i had the chance.
I will get it done in few hours most likely. At least the basic gnome package group.
No fucking way im doing gnome-extra.
I would make it into an repo but well i dont have a spare server i could use sadly. And i dont have money to mantain a server sadly.
It will be AUR most likely.2
we just created a new web dev team (3 months) and boss came to us, looked what frontend guy has done already (one guy who joined us month ago) and said "this is not how i imagined our platform. It should be working next month". Well how about providing anything to let us know what do you want? Well Im fighting now to get some brief at least ;)
If you compliment my code, there's a 50% chance I'll lose control of my speaking volume and a 200% chance I'll act like a giddy schoolgirl for a solid 10 minutes. Nothing quite makes your day like a job well done notice.
My over promising boss is upset that something that used to work doesn't work now because support decided it had to be changed. We took it apart to rebuild it and it's only partially finished right now. Says he can't show it to clients like this. Well no we told you it wouldn't be ready for the deadline you forced upon us, even before the requested changes, but instead of listening you tell us not to argue and just get it done.3
Smalltalk looks like an OO language done right. History rarely seems to be kind to well designed languages.2
Well Argos, you now know what bad developers + Java can bring you. An out of bounds on an empty array -.^
Good job guys. Really, well done!
Does anyone have experience in turning a website idea into a working business? I had a website idea so me and friend decided to make it happen. So far the development is going well, but we don't really know what's next after we're done. Does anyone know any resources regarding what's next? However to reach audience, investors and staff like that?11
ML Dude: “Hey see what I did with this python code. It is so clean and dope”
Business Boss: “Well Done.”
ML Dude: “It is a nice approach don’t you think.”
Business Boss: “How does this put a money in my business account?”
ML Dude: “Ehmmmm”2
Saturday morning. 10am.
Me: happily sleeping on the sofa in a friend's apartment.
Boss calls: 'oh did I wake you up? Can you please develop this mockup over the weekend?'
Being half asleep I agreed.
Well. After 7h without any break it is done. But one Saturday is lost and I'll never get it back :(6
Well, it's 5:53am. I have successfully stayed up all night making about 20% of an entire Django site for a client meeting this morning that I'm not going to.
I'm not sure how much he wants to be able to see but I think I'm done for now. I need sleep and coffee and food all at once preferably.
I keep nodding off and scaring myself...10
-Had low battery so I put the phone on power saver mode (decreases brightness) and manually lowered it to minimum as well
-Couldn't see shit
-Thought something is wrong with my phone
-Reset it completely
-Now the screen is fine
-The light blinked in my brain and I realized I'm an idiot
WHAT ANDROID PENDEJA MADE THIS EVEN POSSIBLE TO BE DONE YOU SON OF A BITCH1
So you know those motivating moments, when you are asked by a junior dev 'cause his task is impossible to solve and you take 3 minutes to say it's done?
Well. Juniors are still learning.
BUT WHY CANT YOU USE DOCS AND GOOGLE?????2
They are getting better..
Got a message on LinkedIn from a very beautiful recruiter lady asking me to have a coffee to discuss job possibilities.
She actually had a look at my skills.
- my native language is important
- Technologies and roles are a good fit
- she wrote that they also have an office here in Dublin (I mentioned in my profile that I’ll never take a job back home again)
„They also have a gaming room if you’re into that“..
The probably best message I’ve ever gotten from a recruiter.
If I wouldn’t really like my current job I’d definitely meet up with her..
Hypothetical question.. would it be okay to hit on a recruiter on LinkedIn although you’re not interested in the job?😍8
i suddenly understand people ranting about programming languages. sure, it gets the job well done but vba syntax just makes me feel uncomfortable2
... I really truly hate with a passion..
when you've agreed on one solution and when it's done, but not approved and deployed..
suddenly decides "oh it needs, x-y-z that I said it won't need"..
Mind you, that x-y-z things mean rewriting a lot of it...
Oh well, at least I get paid for the extra hours to be spent.1
I like to code as a hobby as well as do it as a day job so it surprises me quite alot when people get all funny about me coding outside of work/uni. It's just funny because half of these brain dead students know nothing about anything other than what they're taught in education. Most students are so fucking stupid nowadays and they don't like to read or research or learn. But I'm the anomaly. Ok guys. Well done, go get pissed; it's the best you can do with your braindead selves.3
So just opened Twitter at work to see Dark souls remastered is a thing... Instantly though "here we go, a $100 rerelease capped at 30FPS on console, oh well still getting it", went to EB games and read the description for the Xbox edition, running at 60FPS and for $60 AUD.... Dear all AAA developers...
THIS IS HOW YOU DO A REMASTER!!!!
Up the frame rate to 60 if previously capped at 30, upgrade textures and charge a reasonable amount for it!
Well done Bandai!3
It seems being your own boss (on side projects) isn't much better... keep telling myself to "add just one more feature" , "make a slight improvement"
Well there goes the whole morning... which I was supposed to spend doing other stuff....
In fact I told myself and everyone I was done a few days ago... but it keeps coming back...2
Well, it happened. They ripped me off...
They promissed the world and they delivered nothing.
All bets are off. From now on, I am not responsible for my actions.7
My productivity today:
- [11:05] Decided to get something done to be able to enjoy the evening even more (an important deadline draws near).
- [11:06] Ran out of coffee apparently. Well, that sucks.
- [11:25] Trouble with the environment on my machine at home.
- [14:00] Trouble continues, tried using tools to fix trouble, ran into trouble with said tools, ended up fixing trouble with tools before fixing trouble with environment with tools.
- [15:30] Fixed environment, finally ready to get something done.
- [16:30] Spent an hour browsing the web.
- [16:31] Decided this was enough work for a saturday.
Well I figured out why my delete button wasn't working...
I'm so burnt out and ready for school and this capstone project to be done.1
IONICS DOCUMENTATION SUCKS A FUCKING BIG ONE!! Well done on a shit welcome to ionic experience cunts7
It's getting cold now over here and all I want to do is sleep... I have no motivation to do anything useful (dev, useful reading) either, just binge watch TV...
So wondering how do you actually get shit done (stuff you should do but don't have to do)? Maybe it's the food related as well?7
Just subscribed to this. My first subscription or even purchase, from the store. That should tell the developers something about their work. Well done.1
Received a new HP Probook 640 G2 laptop for work, everyone else has theirs as 64bit machines. Yet the idiots who handle hardware and software installs installed windows for a 32bit machine. Well at least I get waste half a day and do nothing while they redo everything and then I have to still get shit done later.
Love the new web app for devRant!
Would love to see it as a PWA in the future but it's currently an amazing web app, well done guys!
We are 1 week from first system demo of a down well seismic system. All the SW to run on the sensor nodes inside the well pipe has been developed with driver mockups since the FPGA team hasn't finished their part yet. So, integration, integration testing, system test and bug fix must be done in a hurry! Does this scenario sound familiar?3
So I started at a new company about two months ago. I was hired as a Senior .net developer, which I am well qualified. I also told them that I did MVC but haven’t done react or angular.
So my first project with this company is building a react-native app. (Never done a native app either) The craziest thing is I am the most senior on this project too.
What is even crazier, I still work for my old company on the side, and the only .net I am doing is for them. And even funnier, my old company thought the reason I was leaving was to do more .net development.2
When someone over complicates everything. Turns what could be a three paragraph billeted system launch email into four dense pages that no one will finish reading. First page tooting their horn for a job not well done. Usually 'less is more'2
Saturday and a new VSCode Insiders release?
Normally there is no new release on the weekend. Well done Microsoft, except for the fact that I now have the following message in the terminal: "your 131072x1 screen size is bogus. expect trouble" :)
Otherwise, the performance of the current release (code-insiders_1.17.0-1506717283) is way better than the previous one.4
Just spent 10 minutes debugging why my game is launching with the console presets and UI only to see that I set my configuration to Console...
Yet another tool to "empower" management into thinking they are able to do in days what takes engineers years to accomplish.
All this is going to do is create technical debt for developers to consume when management is promoted for a "job well done".
Well! Interview at Amazon done! Really nice people with a good mentality. Nothing left but to cross fingers!2
This lead is an asshole, I'm the only who gets shit. Even if other people have the same issue.
To me: "The purpose was to have it done now."
To others: "Well, at least you have it mostly done."5
Thank you, company forced windows update! My 60 minutes reconfiguring rabbitmq and postgres were well invested instead of investigating the memory leak fucking hibernate causes.
*Creates a random .NET core console application on windows*
Alright, I've created this in Dropbox til I get some traction with it..
*Edits a few things, saves project and syncs files then open's project on mac later that night*
And some more progress, brilliant, save and done..
*Turns on pc next day and see's dropbox taking 80% CPU usage and %20 disk usage*
What the fuck! Ok ctrl alt delete to the rescue!
*Notification pops up saying Dropbox deleted over 20, 000 files*
Well... Aren't we off to a fucking great start .NET Core...
(Yes I know I can get all files back, done and done and can't actually 100% pin it down to .NET Core..)
Who else loves programming with interface pattern for small home projects. It's like half an hour in it and your program is practically done. Well, you still have to spend two days implementing those interfaces, but technically, you're done.1
Host: The 'sessions' folder is too full, we moved the website in a quarantine server.
Me: Well, someone forgot to cleanup sessions when they're done.
Boss: Just delete the folder contents every 3 days!
I'm in Europe and searched for a few spots along my route with Google maps app, the search results contained USA
well done Google.. maybe you need 10 000 new devs to fix that1
I handed a technical story to my dev to work on, including an example of how it has been done elsewhere in the system. He comes back and told me it does not look that simple. Well yeah, that's your job to solve the problem.
Ok let's see. Who tha he'll created this code... Well well let's rewrite it. 8 hours later. OK now it is done. Let's see who to blaim... :@
O no!! it's me :(
Well i see those as two separate problems. To focus get a pot of coffee, put headphones on loud enough to tune out any outside noise, and lock the door. As for procrastination lean into the damn skid, go find something you like to do and come back later. The longer you fight it the more unproductive time you're going to have, and in my experience i get more done in 3 productive hours than i do in 8 unproductive hours1
Our computer science GCSE exams are so flawed in so many ways. They're awfully vague or just completely wrong. In the last exam I did, I got a question that was basically:
"There is a server in a network. Name 3 of its functions"
If you did not provide an answer within the 5 "correct answers", it was considered incorrect as it was beyond the curriculum hence irrelevant.
That's like penalising people for not correctly guessing the contents of an opaque box...
I've genuinely lost more marks to the flaws in the marking scheme than genuine error.
Valve, pls fix4
When your senior says he may as well stops working as I'm always refactoring his code...
Same sentence says I copy what you've done in other places so I don't see why it isn't good enough. By copy he leaves redundant code in there too.
Am I a being a douche is he just being over the top?
- He writes code and expects it to live for a long time.
- I write code and will go home and refactor my own code.2
I've had this idea for some time now. How about a website that gathers some of the most well written open-source code and allows you to easily read it for educational purposes? Everyone says that reading source code can be a great learning tool but directly jumping into github is not very friendly to newcomers. I saw what underscore.js has done with the annotated code link and I think it's great. What do you think?6
Been getting some fiverr requests recently. Had one to migrate two websites and email migration. Simple enough, accepted. Contract signed. Got sent the files and the SQL exports, the website is from the 90s. So I might as well ask if they need a website update after the migrations are done haha as the company is still pretty active.
Our teacher has assigned us a project that should be well documented, well built, written in a language that he has no freaking idea how it works and the project should be Facebook rich with features, we are three members in a team and the project should be done in less than two months. How the hell should we deal with this freak?5
Just spent hours trying find why my game was so janky looking in movement only to realise I dropped the max frame rate to 30 instead of its max 240... Well done Alex!2
Nice. I can't update my alarm app because I don't want Galaxy Apps to access my contacts. Well done. Whatever these two have in common...2
Fucking Chrome. I wish him cancer to die soon. Yeah, please fucking give me as event target svg element! Well done!2
You know your night is off to a great start when it takes you 30 minutes to remember VM's exist and can be really good for testing out display scaling... Well done Alex... Well done1
How do you manage switching between different languages and the tools and frameworks that are used for each?
Or frontend server and APIs are in JS and use mocha for testing.
But backend is in Java which uses Mockito.
Every time I need writes tests and well anything that is language specifics, I basically have to relearn rather than just getting it done.2
Totally forgot that protonmail released an android app. Now that I've tried it, I have to say that it's absolutely fantastic! Really well done protonmail team :-)
I need cyclic data structures but algebraic data types are my first love and tying the knot is impossible with the eagerness F# has. The interfaces and classes I abandoned C# for are the ones I am now writing in F#. What a job well done on my part in avoiding mutability :(6
Well been working on my game engines CLI data tools for a while now, got sprite packing working but completely forgot I had to work out a packing method for JSON, XML and a few other files into 1 package... Fuck...
At least the easy part is done, just need to work out a proper and efficient way to store everything...
- never push to prod on friday or before lunch time
- doublecheck fucking everything
- test your code before and also after you push it
- you remember yesterday your colleague/boss/pm told you his part will be done by now? well guess what, its not! it never will be...
!Rant (but for those few who keep on giving me upvotes)
First workout done today. How did it go? Really well. In fact, it went so well that I couldn't open the repurposed fire door (thick, heavy metal).
I published my first game, Rain. Everything seems to be going well, but I don't know what to do next. I've done some self promotion on social media. Should I spend some money on advertising?
Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...8
Create something "revolutionary", become recognized worldwide and respected for what I've done. Maybe becoming BDFL of my own language or give my name to an algorithm, something like that. Not necessarily rich or famous, I just want to leave a mark on the face of the earth. Do you know Federico Faggin? Well someone like him.
During a stand up meeting, boss turns up to us and says: "Who can stay later today?" Many hands rise. Turns up to new dude, who isn't performing that well: "that performance report automation, it is due tomorrow now. Fuck it. Get it done." Left at 21:30 from the office with an MVP but I usually arrive at 7:00 so I was fucking exhausted. Now, my question is: who am I supposed to be pissed off? The boss who went apeshit on the new dude or the new dude that isn't getting shit done?4
Friday me: writes a few hundred lines of code.
Saturday me: I know exactly what to do.
Sunday me: *thinks of new ideas for said code*
Monday me: *feels like death* what is this shit on my screen?! *realizes this is mine* what the fuck was I thinking?!?! *deletes everything but one line*
Monday me (later in the day): *one line still there* well...time to go home I've done my work for the day!
Well i fucking hate my life right now.. I had a running arch linux installation with i3 as my windows manager.. dont need a desktop environment.. i don't know what i've done but it doesnt boot anymore..
Guess i will reinstall it8
Well done Samsung! There is nothing better than wake up in the morning just to find out that fucking VR Service ate 15% of the battery overnight.
The most important thing my mentor taught me was “ in an audit if the auditor asks ‘do you have the time?’ And you do simply respond ‘yes’” it done me well so far!2
I swear web frameworks are popping up faster than I can catch up, I mean I'm not even done learning react 😭 usually made projects in ASP.NET MVC with just jquery and it just feels like a lot of work to create more layers on the front end as well. Advice needed if you work on both front and back end what js frameworks do you use, and from experience which would you prefer?3
Unbelievable. 14 out of 16 runs of integration tests errors unexpectedly with no error message, port was already used (not released from last cycle) or timed-out in the before all hook. Well done whoever wrote this suite!
> You have found an even better place to make the code changes than I had indicated in the FR. Well done!2
Am I weird or is working in bars awesome?!
I mean I can never get any serious work done, but if I'm just routing PCBs; no better place to work than noisy bar at half capacity.
P.S. : Wouldn't have thought it, but KiCAD is a hit with the ladies!
P.P.S. : Well, the kind of ladies I'd like to talk to.1
"In a well-made book, where designer, compositor and printer have all done their jobs, no matter how many thousands of lines and pages they must occupy, the letters are alive. They dance in their seats. Sometimes they rise and dance in the margins and aisles." - Robert Bringhurst1
Since most of the people around here can code decently well and also have the capacity and knowledge(imo) to trade stocks regularly, I'd like to know if anyone really does it?
Since I'm currently jobless, I have dabbled a bit in the share market and have been quite successful while following very specific rules, so I was curious if anyone has done/is doing this regularly as an alternative job/source for additional money!2
I'm not sure if anyone besides me has ever done this. But I'm using git locally on my machine as a system restore of sorts for one of my programs. As well as a means to see what files are changing as i continue to use the program.
Why so many people complain about Vim? Just drink Nuka Cola.
Anyway, my first scripts were done with edit, in MS-Dos...
Anyone who can't learn how to use a tool... Well there are so many IDEs...
Just use something else1
Losing faith in Netflix and their awesome open source projects.
Had a hard time trying to install Security Monkey : poor quality quickstart Ubuntu-only, almost no documentation, same instructions for latest (aka dev) and stable (aka prod) version, no depencies list ... oh and the UI display well only on Chrome ..
Then you surrender and just want to check the dockerized version they provide : it doesn't work neither (build fail or back end process just shut down) !!
I'm done ...
Perfectionism... I often refactor my code because I always see something that could be "done better" in my own work, which can slow me down if I'm not paying attention to my main task.
If I could stop time I would perfect my code all day, but that isn't realistic. 😂
Doesn't apply to dev work only, I've had to learn the art of not giving a shit about every single detail in many other disciplines. I just love getting things done really well.
Automating installation and configuration of an automation tool would actually save some time, which itself is supposed to save time. Puppeteering 2000 nodes of F5 loadbalancer and BIG-IP configuration spiderweb is actually fucking with me, oh well btw, that is the smallest task of whole project and none in my team are able enough to write a decent puppet class.
Deadline today, hoping to finish it up soon, getting back to you soon when I am done with it, cheerio devRanters!
Laravel Excel is shit and has shit documentation as well. PHPExcel may not be as pretty as a bunch of callbacks but it's more efficient and actually gets the job done.6
I saw this headline today: "Trending Technology - Google's new AI tool could help decode the mysterious algorithms that decide everything"
Basically, an AI tool to decode how other AI algorithms work...
Congratulations humanity... you done well.2
I just want to give a quick shout-out to the advertisers who were so quick to monetize a pandemic and pull on the heart strings for some PR value.
Well done, lads.2
!rant about Codecademy:
It turned out to be one of the best courses I've done. It didn't cover everything in detail. It is free so I wasn't expecting that.
Still, the topics it covered, it covered pretty well, and the hand-holding approach really helped give me a much better grasp of these concepts and models.
Well worth the time!6
I just had a flashback to the good ole days of using HTML tables for website layouts. Tables within tables within tables were pretty ridiculous, but they really got the job done pretty well back then. It makes me think about how technology changes and a principle that was once so widely used is now almost completely obsolete.5
Had to fix some stuff in the documentation for my internship... boot up Windows in a VM to use Word, virtual machine crashes *twice* for no apparent reason, making me lose some unsaved progress and somehow all the pictures in the document got a read error.
Ah well, should be done with it now (:1
Everybody is bussy!
So let's going to give this mess to the one who never worked with mongo, does not know the objects in the DDBB, add to it some weird way to build queries in java to it and hope for everithing end well!
End well = need to be done today.
Guess what? Not for today! I have no clue of how to clean this shit.1
That time when you are taking about personal projects with other developers and their past frustrations come into the project discussion all of the sudden. Like, I just wanted to communicate about this great idea I got with other developers, not about how it cannot be done, or how someone else thinks I cannot get it done. I can stand this happening the first 1000 times, but not the next 10000 times.
I feel that this happens to other people as well, but there is just no talk about it anywhere.3
Just spent 30 minutes trying to work out how to do my dev terminals rendering in it's main for loop...
Only now just realised I should probably use 2 seperate for loops and rendering layers for the background and text... Well done dickhead
The longer I go at this job, the more I feel unqualified to be doing it!
My boss is giving all these really fascinating ideas and things to get done... but he's not really describing it well on how to do it... just to do it. My creativity is being tested...2
So reinstalled to learn React Native... and React as well while I'm at it. Can that be done or I would learn React and build a webapp with it first? (I don't want to build a webapp though...)
Also I want to target Android but seems all books target iOS... Are there any books for Android?
I'm just following the Facebook GitHub now.14
Estimate how long it will take you then double it. After that split the project into milestones and add the days you give a client to accept the milestone. If you have a good client you will get done early and refund them the difference. Otherwise you get paid well for dealing with a dumbass.
Anyone here do much nativescript? I have never done any mobile dev but know angular quite well.
I'm trying to decide if it's worth jumping right into nativescript or taking my time to learn standard java and swift dev first to understand the underlying code... Then there's xamarin. Any advice?8
When u are at page 8 of promotions of pc components, click on "see 100 products" and go to the first page 🤦
We are supposed to make a portfolio in school explaining who we are and projects that we made. The only problem is that I have not done shit, the only thing that I've done that was only for the most part ripped from a tutorial (everything else might as well been copy pasted) was a calculator that barely works and looks like shit. So I just sat down for hours got nothing done and felt awful.
Well... best thing you could do is not limit yourself to one language and one area of programming. Experience and being better comes from exposing yourself to variety of programming areas and seeing how things are done there. :)
Email arrives, contains a list of deadlines AND descriptions of new features and changes to portal... all news to me, Really?! All for next month you say? Didn't we just assign a different project to the team? Did we replace the 50% who leave this week yet? no.... Well done project management... Slow clap for you guys.... It's so idiotic I'm not even mad...
I write a hello world and then start importing libs and packages on top. Then I adapt the hello world to test those libs and packages. The entire thing is one big sanity check. The logic is done in increments as well.
Is this bad?
Well...I can not post it here because I threatened him that I would post his non payment bullshit all over the internet and he would never get anything done by a freelancer again.
Enterprise Architect after morning requirements session: "Well that is actually more simple than I thought. I don't think we'll need the full four days we have scheduled for this. What do you think."
Me: "Yeah, I don't think it will take four days."
*** Hours later right before end of day***
EA: "So how's it going?"
Me: "Pretty good... [details]..."
EA: "So are we still on track to be done by end of day tomorrow?"
Me: "Wait, what?"
EA: "You agreed it would be done in two days, remember?"
Me: "No, I don't remember that."
EA: "Yeah I asked if it could be done in two days and you said yes. Anyway, I'm heading out, just make sure it's done by end of day tomorrow."1
A project on hive....
Well the server has some error....
So i need to install hive on windows....
For that i need hadoop on windows...
For that i need either vmware or cygwin...
What was my project again??
Decided to make code editor, with language I don't know well with no idea how basic Text Buffer is made. This gonna be long journey but hopefully I have something done. If someone could point me a guide or blog posts about simple text buffers, I would be happy, thank you!
Network Support is the worst place to work in especially when you done all your work in the first hour. Also, when managers are pain in the ass.
Might as well call it a call centre rather than Service Desk
A wonderful example of well-done software done with Java is IntelliJ IDEs family, I can't even look at them without feeling dizzy and disgusted, sometimes I cry in the night, thinking about what could be if they were written in C++.5
Virus scan is crippling my computer, can't deploy till it's done! Might as well be using ticker tape to deploy these reports to the server.
Junior said he has made the changes but doesn't appear in production. When we check back, and found he committed to the files of the target folder. Well done junior.
Is academia just a display of how well you can be a good cog in a system? I feel like I've done more admin work than development just to pass. Too far in to quit though.1
That feeling when you ask client something to make everything clear and just more questions appear...
Well here i thought i would have done work...and pooof its time to go home
All i did was refactor with and make PR...
I guess today was one of those days where little work was done
Why every time I come up with a nice idea for an electrical engineering project it turns out to be far more complex than I could imagine and impossible with my skill level. I have done hours of research and feel like I may as well not bother.1
I went home because I wasn't feeling well. Checked DevRant and apparently it was a good thing because I would have gotten nothing done without SO
I thought BFQ (Kernel 4.12) should be faster on good old hdds. In fact, it is. I'm amazed. Well done. Unfortunately my machine freezes randomly every few hours. 🤔
Well, this eleventh hour, during-the-holidays change to buggy code to make it do something it's not designed to do is going like just about every other project like it has ever gone. Still not done. None of the programmer talent is available to work on it because it's at a time when everyone is traveling. And the third-party data provider is unreachable.
Okay. Confession time:
I made a devRant account to "Join the Dark Side". Dark themes are so much better than light themes. They're easier on the eyes (at least for me), they have more aesthetic appeal, and I personally love the color combinations. So I just wanted the dang dark theme. What I got was an addiction to devRant. Well done you sly developers you just hooked another user.1
Mark my name well. Laban oyusu. You're kids n family will read about me when im done with school.😏4
Woke up at 6am today to do a little bit of work (code review and demo deployment) before I had to catch the train to go to Antwerp only to find out I misplaced the appointment on 24 instead of today.. 😒 slow clap for me, well done dude
On a brighter note, I am now actually on the train to go to TEDx Leuven, anyone else? 😀
2 hours after resolving compatibility issues:
The following specifications were found to be in conflict:
- opencv==3.2.0 -> *[track_features=blas_openblas]
- opencv==3.2.0 -> harfbuzz=1.3 -> freetype[version='2.7|2.7.*'] -> libpng[version='>=1.6.22,<1.6.31']
Well done for today. I'm going for a beer. Ah..almost forgot. Fuck you Anaconda and fuck you Python docs.1
Just something I've been thinking on for a while:
How could programming be done if we couldn't use ordinary if-statements (but functional set operations such as map, filter, with an if- in the lambda function etc. is alright).
Could it work? Also would it be possible to reduce the amount of while loops by using functions for most of the "loop situations" as well?4
So I take a business class that is offered at my school and currently the whole class is working together to make a business.
Well me being me I get assigned to lead the website part of the business but we have a bunch of extra people in the group so I sit down with them, and I ask them a few questions like “have you done any web development before?” Or “do any of you have experience with photoshop?” Well I’m the only one who knows how to do anything, I’m also the youngest.
This is go my to be a long year
"This is an easy task, call me when it's done"
5 months later
"well the test of senduser didn't pass"
Me: "this wasn't on the docu"
"oh, let me rewrite it"
Well, I haven't done almost anything not dev related for the last 6 years, but I think the thing that helped me the most is gaming1
well... Fuck you ackermann and your damn interesting function!
Spent three hours searching for an error in rasoning but well... Who'd have guessed...
FUCK! I need to get my stuff done... Fuck!
Just updated my OP2 to the 3.0.2 through the bootloader, because it wasn't capable of installing it through the OS... I guess that was because I was running the Beta.
When it was done I got the lovely option of "Reboot" or "Yes". I pressed Yes, which sent me to the menu.... ? Well then the reboot option in this menu might work? Got "Reboot" or "No"... I guess someone forgot the meaning of yes and no :P (forgot to take a picture :()
So i've not slept all night, come into work and my first mistake 1 hour in is migrating data from another project into a production database now i have redundant data and redundant tables, well done! fml
Windows update been 27% done for a veery long tim... Ah... Now it was don... No, just restarted... 30% now... Hrmf... Not just annoying, it taunts me as well!
I need to integrate ChargeBee in our product.
They have .Net lib……… Based on fucking static config. Well, I’ll add 1 week to due date for rewriting their lib….
How can they even publicly suggest use of static configuration?
I didn’t even start this project and I feel that it will be one of most painful integrations I’ve done.
I really like devRant's community. I just don't feel very well using the closed-source app, which is very well done and works nice, but I'd feel more comfortable using an open source app with a public repository that everyone can look at instead of a closed-source app with storage and location permissions access. Indeed I would be fine enough with a mobile version of the web app too, but it doesn't seem to be in devRant's developers plan. I've once seen someone creating its own devRant app. Is there any public APIs? Is someone already thinking about this?1
Once again I'm honestly impressed with Joas at joaoapps.com bringing his new Join service to the Xbox.
You can now reroute your incoming messages, such as SMS and Whatsapp, to your Xbox and reply.
Well done sir, well done
(please tell me what I should do to improve!)
So I got some info from devs around the community of DR and I did what they said! I have done a lot to it!
I added an @user system, the feed detects links (I'm about to make that cleaner), and it also detects hashtags in the posts as well but I'm thinking about just adding a hashtag bar in the post menu.2
