Interviewer: "I checked your Github, your side projects look very interesting! Tell me about your other hobbies."
Me: "other hobbies?"11 -
One time I was in a meeting and the UX Director fell asleep (like he had done before) but this time did a little quiet snoring. I was cracking up. A few other people noticed but he was off to the side so most just tried not to wake him and eventually he woke up.5

Was irritated and annoyed because of a client.
Someone called the support line and I was ready for some temper-holding practice.
A very sweet lady was at the other side and she couldn't figure something out and was overwhelmed by all the options she had in her new hosting package.
Very calmly helped her and guided her to the right place, step by step. She did exactly what I said instead of playing a smartass.
She finally found it and said that she appreciated it and a ton of thanks 😊.
Now that's a good way to end a work day!8 -

Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"36 -
A client called today because their email wasn't arriving at the receipants inbox but bouncing back with a 'poor MTA rating' error.
Checked about every blacklist I know and our server was definitely not blacklisted. Must be the receipants host which for some reason was blacklisting his specific email address.
Told the client that it wasn't a problem on our side and that he had to request a whitelist himself (we'd do it but it wasn't a specific server problem so we're not going to spend time on that).
Fair enough, he'd do that.
Calls back. "Well, the other party says that your server definitely has a poor rating, it's on your side!!"
Alright, this is getting annoying. Gave him a few blacklist checking sites links and told him to run his domain AND our server IP through it. Indeed came back completely clean.
"But the other party said it's poor rating on your side so I'd think tha........"
YEAH WHY DON'T YOU SHOVE THAT OTHER PARTY UP YOUR FUCKING ASS. I'VE SHOWN YOU PROOF THAT IT'S DEFINITELY NOT ON OUR FUCKING SIDE, EXPLAINED IT TO YOU AND SO ON. MAYBE, FOR ONE FUCKING SECOND, TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THE OTHER PARTY IS FUCKING LYING?!?!?

Dev stickers are for loosers.
No for real, just received the new computer i ordered . i hear my daughter scream something from the other side of the house.
I thought she said:“is this your new computer?”
But actuaylly she said: “can i put stickers on you new computer???”17 -
My boss's name is Skayo.
He's the best and the worst boss at the same time!
He does let me play video games during work hours, but he doesn't pay me :(
Also when I'm really unproductive, he doesn't even try to motivate me to do some actual work... It may not sound like it, but it sucks.
On the other side, I can just choose which project I'll be working on, which gives me a bit of freedom!
No coworkers tho...4 -
Our dear freelance web dev, you absolutely need to come to our office on the other side of the city during working hours when it's impossible to find parking space for an urgent meeting to discuss you copy/pasting to a web page a simple block of text we'll send you via email

External company HR: We are sorry to hear you've decided to turn down our offer. You made a great impression and we thought you'd be a good fit. If you change your mind please let us know.
Me: I too am sorry you didn't tell me you were moving to the other-side of the county in two weeks, making it impossible for me to travel to and from work. I too have feelings about having done all the interviews and this being the end result. Thank you8 -
Finals done.

Goodbye to programmers best friend. He was the best dog, the best listener, a great pair programmer, and someone to keep my lap warm while I work. And more than all of that, even though he was a dog...he was my friend. Goodnight buddy. I hope I see you on the other side.11

Interviewer: "I'll checked your GitHub, your side projects looks very interesting! Tell me about your other hobbies. "
Me:"Other hobbies? "8 -
A while ago I had all these ideas for side projects, and I really wanted to create something. However, every time I started to work on it I usually started the IDE, wrote a couple of lines, and quickly lost motivation. This kept going for a while. I just wasn't feeling it and when there is little or no (visible) progress it can be hard for me to continue working.
Then one day I wanted to push through it, and decided to set a rule: I have to make at least one commit per day, no matter how small.
So I (re)started work on a side project, and by the time I was satisfied with what I'd want to commit I've made enough progress to want to continue working on it. This quickly turned minutes of coding into (late) hours. Now I have a couple of side projects going which are progressing quite nicely, and I feel motivated to work on them again.
I don't know if there are any other people on here who've had this feeling, but if you did maybe this'll help you :) I'd love to hear from you how you keep yourself motivated!10 -
Put some kind of course into the studies which makes students get in touch with open source technology.
May it be arduino's, open source languages, frameworks, whatever.
But especially teach them what open source stands for. I mean we already teach them how to work with closed source technology explicitly so let's show them the other side as well!12 -
People who say something isn't working and ask us to investigate.
Alright, it's not on our side, go ask support at {differentcompany}.
*presents actual proof*
Client replies: oh but I asked the other side and they send over this proof *shows proof saying that its not on our side but very technical so the client doesn't understand* so it's definitely on your side!!!!!!
This annoys the living fucking hell out of me, FUCKING FUCK.
😡9 -
Went for a raise. Got more than I wanted (but negotiated so boss thinks he got himself a deal). Fells good 😀
On the other side, with that I just reached lower end of average developer's wage in Poland...14 -
When your professor tries to tell you no one uses git in industry and you feel bad for all the other students who believe him. Side note: he is convinced everyone uses subversion.8

"Can we build an app that works only in South Africa, for multiple clients, with no WiFi connection, each app contains an entire website and database to use offline, where any changes to one database synchronises every client's app, and also save those changes to our servers?"

Sleep time. If anyone else breaks their shit tonight, I'm going to be pissed. 2.5 more hours until my wonderful coworker on the other side of the country takes calls. I can survive this...1

As an introvert & junior dev, I'm so frustrated with video conferencing meetings:
1. People interrupt each other and change topics all the time.
2. People disregard the host's agenda.
3. Meetings are starting to be recorded or secretly screenshotted in the very moment I am frowning because my internet connection is getting bad.
4. The meeting chat turns into a side discussion if the host is not addressing things in the chat and setting the rules clearly.
5. There are lots of buttons missing in my company's VC tool that would display my current status to the other participators, e.g. a no "I agree", "I disagree", or "I have something to add". All I have available in my VC tool is a "thumbs up" or "applause" reaction that stays next to me in my picture for very long 10s...
6. Webinars via VC tools are super uninteractive. To make it worse, there is no pizza, no free drinks and also no side conversations and no walking to the station together with the other nerds.
7. There is no way to tell the person speaking that you haven't heard them clearly or you would like them to explain something further in a big group meeting. It's too embarrassing for me to interrupt or let everyone else know in the chat that I haven't got it.
Bottom line: I HATE video conferences without a good facilitator that involve more than 3 people and would like to write my own VC software but I'm already kinda feeling drained because all these chaotic meetings stress me so much :(3 -
My dev skills currently feel like England in the mid 1600's.
Everyone around me has already conquered some projects while I sit in the side fighting a civil war with myself while having very humble accomplishments.
But I'll show them. I'll show them all. While they grow weak and weary over the ages, I'm slowly but surely getting stronger.
In the end I will conquer and rule the waves like no other. I will build a dev empire that will be remembered for years to come.3 -

Today I got kicked out of a sports store in a city that I'm not from on Black Friday for *allegedly* walking onto the putting green and teeing off a little foamy practice ball with a 3 wood.
There were a lot of accusations(which was pretty ironic considering I *may* have).
My main defense is that I honestly didn't think I was talented enough for it to end up in hunting & fishing on the other side of the store.
On the plus side I may have found a new hobby outside of developing3 -
A meeting, non-technical PM to me:
"Could you borrow me your laptop? I haven't taken mine and want to make some notes."
"Yeah sure" I said, launched some text editor and turned the laptop to her side. During this motion other colleague had chance to glance at the screen. His eyes opened wide with mix of horror and WTF look:
"What the... That's really not good idea."
Turned out I was in complete autopilot mode and pressed Win key, entered "gvim", accepted by enter.
I've launched Vim.
To a non-technical person.7 -
Are there any other developers out there who find that people judge their skills based on the color scheme they use in an editor?
I started programming with software that only offered one color scheme and have never felt the need to move away from it since I'm used to it.
While I'm sitting in the office, co-workers often come up to me, take one look at the fact I'm using a light color scheme and feel the need to try and convert me to the dark side as if that will make me a better developer.
Does anybody else experience this?26 -
Father: What is this? *hands me a box*
Me: 😯 *opens box*
The contents of the box: a white cube about an inch on each side, with a speaker on one side, a button on the other and three small holes.
Comes with a manual (square inch piece of plastic with a drawing) that shows you what the button does (turn it on, duh) and some indications as to what the various holes do.
Me: 😶 I have no clue... Maybe it's for taking calls? (though speaker mode does exist peeps)
Father: 😑What do you mean you don't know... Don't you know about stuff like this?
I love when my family assumes I am all knowing when it comes to anything running on electricity... Guys, just because I program I am not a psychic and am not better suited to fix your printer or fix your phone screens.12 -
Recently I've been working on a side project and I've been working on it a lot over the last week, with lots of late nights.
My girlfriend said to me the other day, "do you not wanna give it a rest for a bit, you'll be starting your new job soon, you'll get fed up of it".
I then explained to her that, programming is on of those few careers where you'll continue to do programme and do side projects, even after a full day of it, and I couldn't imagine it any other way.
I can't wait to start work.. but then I also don't wanna lose out on project time 🙁4 -

A local television station on the other side of the country has been running my software for about two years now and today I finally went to see them. (and deploy a completely rehauled version)
It was so awesome to see these people in real life for the first time. They were nice and hospitable. I'm really glad my software is contributing to what they are doing :D12 -
Today, I reached a new level of laziness.
I lied down to watch a movie and I was too lazy to copy the movie from my external hard drive which was in the other side of the bed.
What did I do? I've downloaded the movie once again and watched.3 -
My first work was a paid internship.
My first couple weeks on the job I was supposed to be working on the same machine with another dev to get the gist of the process and everything. Kind of pair programming mixed with mentorship. Sounds cool?
Yeah... Problem is my fellow dev was more interested in spending around 80% of her time chatting around with her boyfriend and friends on Microsoft Chat.
Anyway, I soon got bored of having to look to the other side all the time, and went to our boss and asked for some other stuff to do "because I'm better learning by doing than by example".
Almost 20 years later, I'm still in touch with this dev... But she soon left the job and pursued a career as a translator and interpreter. She was always more interested in talking than programming 😃1 -
A man starts choking in restaurant, the waiter yells out "is anyone a doctor?"
On the other side of the room a man jumps up and yells "I'm a vim user".1 -
To the people talking about boats on the other side of the cubical wall, FUCK YOU! YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING FOR 45 MINUTES! DO YOU WORK? I HOPE YOUR BOATS ALL GET RUST. I worked 12 hours on Sunday, got 4 hours of sleep, pulling a full day, then depending on how much work I get done work all night again. RESPECT MY QUIET ZONE!!! Uncouth peasants!undefined 3 years of friends repeats wife has the show on repeat boats rust no sleep i know it all friends reference rust is boat cancer pissed off13

Due to inspiration of giving up with windows being slow (performance wise) always connecting to MS severs (I have slow internet) so it’s noticeable when I can download quicker on a raspberry pi then on a laptop - both over wifi 🤷♂️
And burning a fucking boot DVD for Ubuntu takes 3 fucking DVDs at 2.4x speed - before getting a successful boot disk 😞
I think it’s time to swap out this hdd and go to the dark side!12 -
I FUCKING HATE IT when you have a free day and you are so happy about it, because you can work on your projects, study things you want
BUT NOO
you sleep a little bit longer, wake up
And suddenly you find out that you need to go to the other fucking side of the city in 3 hours and spend there half of the day.
FUCK
There goes my free day...5 -
Did not expect this from Google. Seems like you're hiring real linguistic pros.
Now this is not the only thing I didn't like, they're very disorganized & the interviewer got sick & two of three interviewers were so cocky.. bad bad vibes
On the other side, a small local company is giving warm & good vibes, seems more accommodating even with lower pay.. their website sucks & the tech director was honest & smiling.
So yeah, Fuck You Google

- Recruiters are as bad as car sellers
- They are not your friends
- They're not on your side
- The less you ask for a job the more they're gonna get
- Keep your cards on your side
- Don't tell them how much you make (they love to know that)
- Set a salary expectation for yourself and push it
- Expect a few-months long job hunting
- If you know you deserve the salary you are asking for keep pushing.
- Be patient.
- Don't give your 2 weeks notice until you signed already for the other company
- Medical insurance makes a big dent on salary
- Keep applying for jobs even if you are advanced in a hiring process.
So far this is what I've been learning through my current job seeking experience.
I hate job recruiters, if you can, avoid them at all costs10 -
Just logged in to my old Bitbucket account.
It's a huge cemetery of side projects..
Some of them are unknown now..
Some others were glorious..
And some of them were killed by other projects, loosing the war of side projects..
RIP my old projects.. RIP2 -
Worst one I’ve seen so far is when I was working for my previous community another developer joined to help me, without the permission of me or the other lead developer he pushed a client-side update. We didn’t think it was a big deal, but once we began reviewing the code it became a big deal... he had placed our SQL credentials into that file that every client downloads. All the person had to do was open the file and could connect to our SQL which contained 50k+ players info, primarily all in-game stuff except IPs which we want to protect at all costs.
Issue becomes, what he was trying to do required the games local database on the client-side, but instead he tried connecting to it as an external database so he decided to copy server-side code and used on the client.
Anyways, the database had a firewall that blocked all connections except the server and the other lead dev and myself. We managed to change the credentials and pull the file away before any harm was done to it, about 300 people had downloaded the file within an hours period, but nothing happened luckily. IP to the DB, username, password, etc, were all changed just to keep it protected.
So far this is the worst, hopefully it doesn’t get worse than this :/1 -
Fuck Coronavirus and fuck the person, responsible for the outbreak.
The local commiccon, linux-days and my working-period at a location on the other side of Germany got canceled.
My complete weekend just got annihilated.11 -
DevRant setting says "Join the Dark Side?"
No no no...It's 2017, shouldn't it be called the "Other Side"? Apparently a bunch of monkeys get offended by every single damn thing.
Grow TF up, ya Monkeys.5 -
A popular social media website in my country (which my friends and I were working on it's new design) was hacked and everyone on the dev side of the website was invited to the ministry of communications, believing we were going to discuss security of user data. The other guys (working on the back-end) were friends with the CEO (if you want to call it that) and naturally came to the meeting. They started to talk about the girls of their city. Meanwhile about 1.2 million user data encrypted with MD5 was out there.6

!rant, but whatever... At least it brightened my day.
So, I was walking to my school, when I saw a visibly "tired" guy (you know, a lot must've happened yesterday evening / night) walking on the other side of the road in the opposite direction. He crossed the street with the wobble of uncalibrated drone and at that point I knew what is going to happen. Or so I thought.
So we're walking towards each other. At one point he looks at me.
Me: *thinking* "Yep, he saw me. I'm going to be asked for money, am I not? Ugh, I have to think about excuse. Again..."
He: "dude..."
Me: *thinking* "Mmkey, here we go again"
He: "dude, don't do drugs... 'cuz they're bad"
And he walks away.
So, I guess today's lesson is you'll never know when you're going to get friendly advice from random people.4 -
Slack culture.
Yes, the chat application.
Fuck it, fuck mattermost, HipChat, Skype, and whatever other digital text medium for team communication.
These are great applications, but used for great evil. They feed cliques and passive aggressive "side" conversations. Every team I've been on has something like this, and it allows people to cultivate hate for one another even though they're sitting in the same room.
Texting allows you to complain about a coworker to your clique. Each clique can have it's own thread. This empowers people to silently rip into other team members. It prevents rational adult conversations and builds stupid little secret societies.7 -
Who's got time to be an imposter. 🤷♂️
I am out of my depth 90% of the time, always diving into areas that are foreign to me, you just need to enjoy the buzz of knowing you are coming out the other side more knowledgeable then you did going in.
But if you do get overwhelmed with this condition, step back, take a breather, and use that moment to think things through at the big picture level before moving forward again, sometimes the right solution is hard to think off when you're to focused and drowning your way through a bad one.4 -
Nothing like staying late at work to finish other people's work that they can't get done in time because they were doing side projects. Nevermind that I have two huge deadlines myself. Getting really tired of cleaning up other people's messes.4
-
You probably know the "marshmellow experiment": have one marshmellow now, or delay the gratification by some time, then get two. What the experiment is supposed to measure is something like intelligence or impulse control.
Hot take: what it also measures, and much more so when it comes to reality, is trust. If I don't trust the other side to be both able and willing to deliver on the promise later, I will rather secure the smaller reward right now.8 -
Two of them, both are not very extrem.
Positive one first:
Meetings were usually not dead serious (unless there was a problem), everyone just joked around a little, made their actual points and got back to work.
Now the other one:
A client's QA staff commented "this bug is still occuring" on 5 tickets, without checking if they ever deployed the new release candidate.
They didn't deploy the new RC, so of course, the bugs couldn't have been fixed on their side.2 -
The JavaScript everywhere trend.
Sure it's possible and the language develops at a fast pace since ES6 but JS like any other language just is not suited for everything. I think JS will stay in server side automation and as scripting language for customisation but not how it is abused now in electron or even node.js.
There will be better solutions if they are not already there.10 -
How often do women bring up their own gender in tech interviews? I've never done it, and I've never interviewed anyone, but I'm curious about whether it's ever explicitly mentioned (beyond a, "I'm in a women in tech group" or "I mentor young girls in my free time").
I don't want to start any debates. Just curious about what people on the Other Side of the Table see.20 -
So I had this conversation with my boss yesterday...
Me: Hey, I found this bug in the other team's code that has a major impact on what we're trying to do. Can you ask them to look into it?
Boss: No, I don't want to be the one who has to tell them there's a major bug in their code. Find a workaround.
M: But... It isn't really a major bug, it just has a big impact on our side of things.
B: Workaround!
Fuck bosses who value how they think they look to other devs over a day of my time. Fuck.4 -
Trying to buy a house in another state. First time moving out of state, first time trying to buy a house. Making first offer this weekend. Which is terrifying, and exciting. But it’s also lonely because my other half is in the other state looking at houses and I’m stuck here working and taking care of the cats.
Had a poor mental health day yesterday. Got a call today that my mama (gran on my mum’s side) took a tumble and has been in hospital and they don’t think she’ll pull through. I don’t have many memories of her, but the memories I do have are happy ones. She was always full of life and love and kindness.

There's a guy who uses a small electric scooter to speed across the office. It's less than 30 meters to the other side of the office.
Guy is going to hurt someone at some point. I don't even know the guy but I can already tell he's a dick.3 -
Sat on the train to my girlfriend's house 1.5 hours away, and I'm letting a friendly stranger charge his phone from my laptop (THIS INTERCITY TURBOSTAR TRAIN HAS NO MOFO'ING SOCKETS BUT PAID WIFI) and now my computer is out I want to code.
Problem is, if I bring up vim or the terminal, I may as well bring up hackertyper and put on a ski mask, and quietly mutter 'I'm in'.
On the other side, maybe he's using his beaten up Samsung to sneakysneak into my laptop? Who knowwwssss.6 -
In order to reduce support costs, manager instructed his team to remove all logging/reporting of errors in the company’s CRM application.
Team’s support tickets went down 80%, manager received an award for his efforts, but mysteriously, DBA/support workload increased, bad/missing data,
increased support tickets in other areas of the business (shipping, etc. that relied on correct data from the CRM) and other side-affectual behavior.
Even after pointing this out this correlation, showing before/after code, no one believed the two were related and I was accused of not being a ‘team player’.
“You and the other teams need to learn from his example!”. As ‘punishment’ was I was moved to the team managing the CRM application.1 -
Is it just me or do others also question their decisions regularly during a project?
Is this the best framework to accomplish this task? Should really I name the function like this?...
Currently thinking about whether Qt is the right framework for (cross platform) app development. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side...7 -
I officially got a call that i start a job from 15th december
That's my first job after graduating with a computer science degree, and it took exactly 421 days later.
This is depressing and sad. Im not even interested in starting a job. I hoped they will reject me just like the other 10,468 jobs. Im not used to getting accepted.
I have to finish my side project within these two weeks asap rn7 -
The other side of the gun: are you allowed to write proper documentation? Most of the time, I'm not.4

A bug which takes 6 days to be found/fixed. Screw you financial data. 👹
🏀on the good side: whole class was de-constructed and re-factored + no other bugs were found! 😀🔥1 -
Me: Can you tell me how to do X?
ChatGPT: yes, you can do xwz!
Me: I researched your suggestion and every source I find mentions that you should not do it because it would mess with the UI thread, amongst other side effects.
ChatGPT: Yes, you should not do xwz.
I’m kinda liking this thing, it’s full of noob traps.4 -
I'm so tired yo... I'm on 2 startups, one is mine the other some dude I'm working with. Both sites built in PHP. Another side gig slack bot thing in Node JS. And then 2 day time jobs in which I'm deciding which one to quit out of... 🫠😵💀5

I've been toying with the idea of making a change to my working life for a while now. Its a big decision, and could affect something thats been working well.
But today I've made that decision ... and i'm going for it ... i'm going to leave my headphones in the office and stop carrying them in / out everyday.
Its a scary thought, but i'm ready for it. Wish me luck, see you on the other side!1 -
You know that figurative bonner you have when working on new/exciting projects?
I used to be like that here...
Today I realized that I lost it a long time ago...
That sucks hard, every little script I do on the side I feel excited , every functionality I develop on the job is a fucking mirror of some other shit that no one uses on another mirror project that brings nothing new to the table.5 -
I've just found workplace stack exchange, feel like it's the compliment to devRant. Some posts from managers with stupid attitudes, getting told off. Nice to see.

Me at BestBuy today: Oh man, you got the got the Pixel 2 XL? This is looks good and feels good in hand. Last time I stopped by, the other guy had just the Pixel 2. Blah blah blah.. so is this running the 8.1 or 8.0?
Verizon associate at BestBuy: The 8.1
Me: oohh, you got that preview huh? *goes into system to check.. dude it's running 8.0
Verizon associate: oh really? Dang, I forgot. I'll side-load the APK.
Me: 😕😒😂 I hear you.
*At that point I lost hope in humanity*3 -
There are multiple degrees of security. On one side is a perfect unpenetrable system. On the other side is Windows XP7

I am sitting at Starbucks trying to focus and finish some posts for my side project. The lady at the next table has been loudly 😁talking about her Disney trip in excruciating detail. Do we really have to know she will store her bagel and tuna fish in the hotel room fridge - really!
30 minutes in and she is just getting to the hotel - yikes 😫
No other seats open. I am trapped. Project deliverable delay - reason loud lady.
I was going to do this as a speech to text post but too nice to do that. HELP!2 -
I was pair programming today with one of the seniors in VS. He thought it was weird that I had docked solution explorer to the left side instead of the default right. This makes me wonder, why is solution explorer docked to the right side by default when in almost every other editor (even VS Code), the "document overview" is always on the left?5

What the hell is wrong with bus drivers?! Our bus was just stopping, and the bus on the other side of the road couldn't care to wait 20 more seconds, so he drives away, fucking waving to our driver. What the hell man? Literally everyone coming with this bus takes it just to switch to your fucking bus you cunt!4 -
When all your friends (which there ain't much of them) are out doing their own stuff, gf and family at the other side of the country, I'm glad devRant is here keeping me occupied and sane... and of course Steam too (but it'll always be 2nd)...2

1. Plan your work
2. Plan new skills to learn every year
3. Stackoverflow is your best friend
4. Don't be afraid to ask stupid questions...
5. ... but make sure not to ask too many of them
6. Don't get burned on one single topic, find other projects to work in parallel or even better work on side projects in your spare time -

what fucking system has a coprocessor after 2002? (My laptop is a 2008 HP something or other)2 -
The tons of undefined behaviour in C that ought to have been implementation defined instead, and increasingly sadistic compiler writers on the other side.
Like signed integer overflow that should just do what the underlying machine does, i.e. in practice, wrap around two's complement.
But the wierdest UB is when a C source code line has a non-matching ' or ". WTF, this should have been a compile time error!2 -
Google Maps put me on the other side of the freeway, so rushing to get there I was stopped by a security guard who told me to slow down and directed me to a spot. I hit the car next to me, I then interviewed and exchanged insurance information with the other car's owner. I went to school to defend my capstone and got the offer. A year later I sat next to the guy whose car I hit.

The worst thing that could actually happen: I was working with a designer on a side project which wanted to build and see it grow. Everything went good until... He stops the communication without any reason!
and because of us working remote from each other there was no way of finding out why...
The project died :(7 -
On one side I fucking hate waiting for the internet technician. I would've liked to go to work (especially as there is an event right now) and not sit here during "That-5-hour-window-because-scheduling-isn't-a-thing-the-german-Telekom-will-tell-you-about" and nurse my impatience.
On the other side, I have idle time and I like programming when everything's quiet in the house and only the heating and my PC cooling system are whirring quietly, so I've got that going for me which is nice.
Only too bad there's no internet right now.4 -
Docker is awesome for minimizing environment problems.
Current side project needed a database, a web server with php and a transpiler server running. Before, other people developed using XAMPP on windows. I dockerized the project and have now just one build script setting up everything the app needs, regardless of the underlying operating system.1 -
Cool to see how we as developers try to create nice things to make the world a bit better while there are others on the other side trying to make enough money for themselves and will let the world burn if needed and try to destroy things.
It's kinda interesting, isn't it?3 -
Why are such many people afraid of dying instead being happy for being still alive?
I mean - if you die, it happens within some seconds ... done.
But on the other side, every other minute of your life, you just don't die.
So dying is statistically negligible.18 -
I'm a developer, but also a father of 2 kids. I love spending time with them, but sometimes I also like to work on my side projects. And besides that, after a long day of work, even if I have spare time, I also like to lay down on the couch and watch Netflix.
How do you other full time developer / parents out there cope with your own personal projects?9 -
I'm trying out blazor at the moment, building a couple of prototypes. I really need to brush up on my html/css for the view stuff, and of course there are a few gotchas. But other than that, I really think Microsoft has nailed browser apps with this!
Client side, server side, a mix of both, runs in all major browsers + as PWA or Electron.
Wow.
All logic and view manipulation in C#, no JS. And the performance is great.
Just.
Wow.1 -
Rant: i have a software firm, recently got a new project, found a freelancer to work on the project.
He is a very good developer but he works on the project only when he wishes to work and I am left to answer the clients about project delays.
It's so frustrating that I can't get angry on him otherwise he will leave the project and on the other side I have to answer clients. I am stuck with all the tensions in the world.21 -
Xiaomi's bootloader unlock procedure is So. Fucking. Tedious. I have no words... oh wait, I do. HIDING THE PERMISSION BEHIND A HUNDRED DEVICE-SIDE SWITCHES WON'T MAKE IT ANY SAFER, IT WILL ONLY MAKE MODDERS ANGRY. Why do you need a third switch besides OEM unlock and USB debugging anyway? If I toggled OEM unlock it's obvious what I'm trying to do and every other option should change to comply with that intent. Don't roll your own Android if you know fuckall about UX.9

Not really Dev advice, but I appreciated it.
"Do your best to take responsibility for everything that happens to you. Even if it's not your fault."
"On the flip side, never apologize for something that isn't your fault. That includes other people's feelings. You're not in control of their emotions." -
It’s funny being on the other side of interviews. People say how complicated it is to get a job, and it is. But then they show up to a third round Senior Software Engineer technical interview and is unable to write a function on the white board in any language or even pseudo code to reverse a string. That isn’t complicated stuff...
Argh, very frustrating.2 -
Beginning my Angular journey. I'll meet you all on the other side of the rabbit hole.
TourOfHeroes, here I come1 -
Is anyone making more money than what they're spending, saving up and having time to spend on a side project/hobby?
I really like programming, but I also want to be able to do other things. It appears that it can be a job that can make one comfortable financially to be able to afford to do other things. Way better than working for McDonald's or some other job.
Is anyone doing this now? Or is everyone working all the time and always stressed??3 -
So hanging out with my in-laws tonight. It apparently is super bowl Sunday. I don't know a damn thing about football and could care less about it.
Them: who do you think is going to win?
Me: I guess the better team?
Them: yes but who are you rooting for?
Me: don't know who's playing?
Ahhhhhhhggg I can't stand sports people.
And there they are yelling at a TV like someone on the other side will actually hear them.
Does anyone else have a similar situation?15 -
love helping users that can describe their problem and then we have the "other" side of users, the life sucking golems of collective stupidity.
You get "software does not work!" and asks for error message or description of what doesn't work and get same response "it does not work".
After a few rounds in the "what is wrong support circle" it ends with user has changed PC to one were the software is not installed...
"it does not work" no effing shit sherlock you want me to install some IQ with it?2 -
Today's first day at my internship has been wasted by IntelliJ IDEA not importing a project properly.
On the bright side, other devs told me that it took them three days in order for all configuration to be set up.
Man, this sure feels unproductive.3 -
I hate my tablet...
It is a giveaway from my sister and it is a bit damaged. It's unresponsive on a straight line from the one side on the middle of the screen to the other.
It's an old tablet, so it has not much memory and it lags a lot, especially during app updates.
To "work" with it, I have to switch from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa, because many apps put dialogs exactly in the middle of the screen, on the unresponsive part.
But what I hate most about this situation is that there are apps that are locked on portrait mode and I can't access them... It wouldn't hurt much if all apps could rotate from one mode to the other!!!
I'm on limited funds for quite a while, so I'm stuck with it for now. Meh... ☹4 -
I just got a bit into OpenCV and I am completely exited. I built a little ball tracker (Yes I know that the cross is on the other side, it's inverted so the cross is at the same position as the ball in front of the camera) and although it is not the most advanced project I think it's kinda cool.9
-
Oh yeah 🙌🏼 So here is the other thing! Many of us work on side projects where we build awesome stuff in our spare time. We don't get much publicity, userbase or conversions as we are not marketing people. So go ahead and write short desc about your product along with website link if you have any. Product screenshot is most welcome 😜 Don't forget to tag post with "mystartup" 🙌🏼 Looking forward to see awesome projects.4

So I decided to switch over to Ubuntu to get used to it and have fun with it along with trying to use Vim just as a side thing for experience (I'm still studying anyways and its semester break).
So I setup Linux in an external disk, booted Ubuntu, setup everything and then loaded a side project coded in C++ and Allegro into Ubuntu.
A few hours of googling and trying to setup Allegro to be properly installed and understanding how to use GCC with Allegro, it finally found the library and one of the cpp files gave an error that is not "cannot find allegro.h". That's great!
Added all the other additional cpp files into the command and added all the includes and there goes the terminal lit up with errors ;_; I'm so tempted to ditch everything and go back to Visual Studios7 -
A couple months ago I started working at a company as a student backend developer.
Last week there was an intenship conference at my school in which I got to represent my company, and talk to my classmates about their possible internships. They were amazed to see me on the other side of the table.
Feels good to be able to start a career at an early age in the developer world! -
Me: I wanna learn Go by writing a side project that might get me a few stars on Github.
Also me: But I don't have any original ideas. Would be nice if I could just take advantage of some other project's popularity.
End result => https://github.com/palash25/...4 -
I've realized that I was acting like an annoying asshole in the past on devRant and I apologize for that behavior.
Some people deserved it and some didn't. Some companies deserved it and some didn't.
I guess the time for a change has come. I will be more careful from now on.
On a side note: I have a different username now.
It was a very depressing experience with you, -ANGRY-CLIENT-. Have fun on the other side. :)8 -
Don’t you hate it when you realize that although your latest websites loads fine from your laptop; it takes more than a full second to load it from some location on the other side of the planet?2
-
Software engineering isn't a great side-career if your aspiration is to do other things.
It takes way too much of your time to let you do anything else.5 -
What got you into programming?
For me, it were the games. I was and still am amazed by how games work, from one side of the planet to the other side, how good the visual effects are...2 -
Working on Django as a server side programming, and having a little bit work with htmls and JavaScript.
What I am called then ?

B. Backend software developer
C. Web developer

* Developing a new "My pages" NBV offer/order solution for customer
_Thursday
Customer: Are we ready for testing?
Me: Almost, we need to receive the SSL cert and then do a full test run to see if your sales services get the orders correctly. At this point, all orders made via this flow are tagged so they will not be sent to the Sales services. We also still need to implement the tracking to see who has been exposed to what in My Pages.
Customer: Ok, great!
_Friday
Customer: My web team needs these customers to have fake offers on them, to validate the layout and content
Me: Ok, my colleague can fix this by Tuesday - he has all the other things with higher prio from you to complete first
Customer: Ok! Good!
_Sunday
Me: Good news, got the SSL cert installed and have verified the flow from my side. Now you need to verify the full flow from your side.
Customer: Ok! Great! Will do.
_Monday
*quiet*
_Tuesday
Customer: Can you see how things are going? Any good news?
Me: ???
*looks into the system*
WTF!?!
- Have you set this into production on your side? We are not finished with the implementation on our side!
Customer: Oh, sorry - well, it looked fine when we tested with the test links you sent (3 weeks ago)
Me: But did you make a complete test run, and make sure that Sales services got the order?
Customer: Oh, no they didn't receive anything - but we thought that was just because of it being a test link
Me: Seriously - you didn't read what i wrote last Thursday?
Customer: ...
Me: Ok, so what happens if something goes wrong - who get's blamed?
Customer: ...
Me: FML!!!2 -
I got such a bad employer… oh, pardon me: committent-but-actually-employer-minus-the-responsabilities that I developed bruxism, rage bursts and chest pains due to anxiety.
Bright side 1: i quitted by saying them in their face “you don’t even fucking know what docker is and you claim to be an expert, get a fucking update”
Bright side 2: They failed a while… Oh wow much surprise, very unexpected considering that they fired the only dev with experience on the product and that they re-made the interface every other day making everyone’s job a miserable joke. Smart move, 10/10 would invest in them.
The “bright side” in this is mostly that I’m forced to accept I was a very valuable asset and shut up any imposter syndrome related to that bs work.
Bright side 3: It forced me to see someone which in turn forced me face some piled up shit, so I recently feel better and hate myself less!1 -
Agreed to help out these 2 guys on a minecraft mod pack idea they had... stipulated this is a side project for me and I'm not going to dedicate too much time to it. They were fine with that
Fast forward a few months main 'idea guy' loses his job so spends more time on the pack and starts hounding me for progress and updates and throwing more and more things for me to do. He's also getting progressively angrier at my lack of substantial progress
Like fuck dude i told you this is s fucking side project to me. I'll work on it when I fucking want to. Hell I'm one more shouting match away from telling him to fuck off and find some other dumbass to be the only programmer in this group and get ignored when it comes to fucking anything else
Their idea of 'source control' is a fucking multi Mc instance that gets shared by the main guy every time HE changes anything. Any scripts or configuration edits I do I need to walk him through so he can update that instance
No clue why I put up with it so long. Maybe because other guy was a cool friend back in college. But at this point they both can fuck off6 -
Today was my first time being on the other side of the table during an interview! Still felt a bit nervous, to be honest lol. It was the second round, and I got to present our stack and talk about what we're working on etc. Long story short, the candidate left a great impression and received an offer. I hope it works out! 😊2
-
I have an idea but no time to build it. So I'll throw it out there and see if anyone does it.
How many times have you had an idea that just couldn't get off the ground without a little assistance. Where do you go? How to "pay" them for their work? Etc.
The development community needs a place where you can volunteer to help with side projects and get paid in karma... which you can then later use to "pay" other developers to assist on a side project of your own.
We are already a community that loves to give back, and collecting fake internet points. Why not put those to good use?9 -
Public transport is slowly getting quieter and quieter. One side of my enjoys the silence and space, but the other side wishes I had the option to not take it either.
Everyone WFH, I envy you...2 -
I checked out this new hybrid app that was released by some local senior developers.
Turns out that on my user profile, my user ID is set as the value of a hidden field and changing it to any other user ID and saving the form will update the profile of that user. Including changing the password.
The password reset form also allows me to change the user ID to reset that user's password.
Speaking of passwords, the value of the password field on the profile is my actual password in plain text.
Yes, I said this app was released by a couple of "senior developers". One has over 15 years of experience and the other works at an IT company that builds online banking systems. They appear to have outsourced this side project to some other development team but... Come on. At least take one quick look at the source code before releasing it, why don't you?
I don't even...1 -
Am I the only one who finds single page website designs too boring and generic? Frameworks, on one side, increase our overall productivity but on the other side kill all our creativity.7
-
I'm seriously burned out "CTO" (small company 20 people, 4 developers).
Should I tell my CEO/CFO exactly that?
Should I tell them, I can't take it anymore, please help me.
Next month we'll have a fund raising opportunity.
I'm afraid it will sound like a blackmail.
I'm afraid they will think, ok, he's burned out, let find somebody else.
On the other side, if I take the risk myself, without telling anyone, I could explode and I'll be on my own.
What do you think it's the best approach?15 -
It seems being your own boss (on side projects) isn't much better... keep telling myself to "add just one more feature" , "make a slight improvement"
Well there goes the whole morning... which I was supposed to spend doing other stuff....
In fact I told myself and everyone I was done a few days ago... but it keeps coming back...2 -
Went to make progress on a small side project I started and ended up just building a brand new animation system for all my other projects...
This is why I never finish anything.. -
Are you planning on entering politics?
Because your documentation is dishonest, doesn't mention side effects and is not meant to be read humans workout a law degree.
Your code on the other hand makes me question whether you try to troll us or whether you are actually unable to understand what you were supposed to do. -
My little brother and his friends had a lan party the other day! It took me years but now he and all his friends are proper PC gamers. I hand built my little bros rig, feelsgoodman.
Side note, I think I've converted my siblings and cousins into techies by accident. I'm the oldest so they always asked what I was doing and I taught them what I knew. Now I'm the one learning stuff from them!1 -
Grass is always greener on the other side.

Time to get a new job! -
It’s time for me to be on the other side of the table. Any suggestions on how to be a great interviewer?12

I hate this so much! I clicked the link because I wanted to see what was on the other side! I know I'm leaving YouTube, and if you want me to stay so that I spend more time on your shitty platform, just make it target="_blank".2

The time that we dedicate to the things and people that we love/like, when it's enough?
The question is generic and for good reason.
Yesterday, semi-seriously, my gf asked me when we'll have a baby, I answered, seriously, that it's gonna be when I'll feel ready to share the daily time with someone as demanding as another family member growing up.
Now, between job time, hobbies time and girlfriend (gonna marry soon) time the time is already tight and because I'm self sufficient about happiness and kind of a loner I don't share really much time with her most of the days, and from this realisation from her side she broke into crying.
From that experience I understood that there might be need some adjustment on my side.
But on another side I'm puzzled of how other families deal with this, because though my life I've seen couples/married-people that had not really much interactions with each other on a daily basis and seemed fine with living like that.
So knowing this context, what's your experience about this phenomenon through your life time?4 -
The person who invented powerpoint and those who use it/love it should be skinned alive.
FUCKING SHIT OF A PRODUCT.
On the other side, instead of torturing someone to death, force them to use Power point for 2 hours a day and that will be enough for the person to beg you to kill them.
Join me in this journey against power point.20 -
My employer found out that I used to do WordPress development. Now I have to setup and maintain the company blog, including custom theme and plugin development. And I don't get paid extra to do this shit.
On the plus side, it might give me better visibility within the office as the blog would be written by VP, directors and other senior folks. I'll have more interaction with them.
I'm curious to see how this goes.1 -
Happy Holidays everyone!!
Stay safe, pamper yourself and don't forget to remember you are loved :))
Will see you on the other side 🤘1 -
I spent about 45 mins this morning going through memes and gaming videos till my workstation finished doing updates.
On one side: fuck updates, what in the holy fuck.
On the other side: fuck yeah, down time to do bs.
I ain't even gonna bitch about Microsoft. It is what it is. Legit no complaints.
Just wish the process was maybe a lil bit similar to Debian updates maybe. Just maybe.11 -
Just reached my office.
Roads were flooded so, I pull my motorbike to other lane and drive while traffic coming from another side.
Felt like fast and furious. Now, I am smiling like Budha and my co-worker giving me strange looks, like I got enlightenment.1 -
2nd part to https://devrant.com/rants/1986137/...
The story goes on...
After I found more bugs that seem to be related to the communication break, and took a closer look, I sent detailed logs of my research and today we had a conference call.
"We have 2,5 million user, our system is widely-used and there is no plan to change it" they said.
And "We cannot reproduce the issue, but even if there is one, you will have to work around the problem, because we cannot make changes on our side" was one answer
As well as "If we would make changes, we will have to re-certify everything"
So I said we told 'em about the issue to let them improve their system. And I can work around it, I already figured out a solution for my side, but if there is a bug, they'd better fix it for future releases.
And with my additional research I have a bad vibe of some kind of memory leak involved on their "certified" implementation, and that could trigger various other problems.
But it is as always, if I try to be nice, I just get kicked in the ass. I should really be more of an asshole. -
Since i am successfully make my employee join devrant, they are started arguing the best editor, 3 choose neovim and 2 other join VScode side.
I choose to use Joe's Own Editor.
And also i am converted to Pink Religion.12 -
Do other OP owners have this close all button in the center?
Don't remember if this is there by default or some mod...
I want to move it to the side as I've pressed it a few times by accident....6 -
Visiting a webshop and ordering what you need? Wack.
Visiting a webshop, seeing that what you need has to be ordered, assuming it costs extra money (it doesnt), calling your son on the other fucking side of the country, telling him to buy the exact same thing there and when he checks the local webshop what says he has to order it too, saying 'no it has to be available there'? Woke.
Thanks mom very cool.1 -
Thinking about an amazing app.
Me: "I will start doing it tomorrow"
Brain: "yeah cool... LET'S DO IT!!"
tomorrow arrives.
Me : "I will this other app...it's fantastic!"
Brain:" oh my god...I can't wait!!!!"
a month passes.
Brain: "weren't you supposed to do your 46 side project apps??"
Me: "I remembered I already work 12 h/day......"2 -
"The value used to compute the x position of either side of the rectangle."
and
"The value used to compute the x position of the other side of the rectangle."
I get it ... but man documentation if you don't already get it ... like nobody is gonna get that.4 -
Just merged the stuff that the other intern and I have been working on for the past couple weeks together. He didn't comment a single function; not the couple thousand lines of c# functions on the server side, nor the hundreds of lines of JavaScript on the client side. It's a mess of formatting... Ugh.4

I committed a sin for which I can never forgive myself.
At work, we were using some react plugin but it was lacking some functionality.
In the end, I forked the repo and released plugin on npm -_-
FML, I contributed to this stupid shit while I was happy with despising over this stupid framework fad from other side.
Ps: It was friday. -
"=$B1*INDEX(A:A,ROW())"
See this absolute bullshit right here?
This fucking cunt of a problem designed by some dippity-do finger-painting fucking jackass at google doesn't work why?
Because for some *god damn reason* they decided it would be a good idea to setup it up in a way that when you use absolute cell references in a formula, you can't use functions in the formula too. No the other side has to be a literal or cell reference apparently.
Motherfuckers.3 -
Can't sleep, thinking about this side project I'm going to start tomorrow.
Which is probably going to last for about 2 days or 3 days, after that it will be a inactive repository, like every other side project.
FML3 -
I just put my side project working with friends to Gitlab.com. Start to wondering why I was choosing between github and bitbucket while gitlab provides free private repo, free CI runners, and all other useful collaboration tools.6

We're completely redoing our bathroom. Apparently i accidentally damaged a pipe on the other side of the wall yesterday, and now we've had a water leak! 😁 Should've written tests before I went home yesterday2

The days of ngrok are over.
I cant believe theres a tool that lets you host both your backend + frontend or any other server side shit to be publicly accessible over the internet using just 1 terminal line

Is it good or bad that the rest of my team is working on the large (shoddilly built) apps but I'm on the side building analytics, reporting, and other tools? (basically telling people why there are so many problems with their app).1

Unable to access cpanel/whm due to IP changed error.
called HR
me : please connect me to networking team (out sourced)
hr : why ?
me : I have some issue to access cpanel. I contacted to hosting comapny but it is not their fault so may be it's our network issue.
hr : explain me in details.
me : ok
from morning I am trying to access whm because our website is out of bandwidth limit and showing 509 error ,I contacted to hosting comapny but they explained me problem from our side. SO i wanted to talk with network team about this issue because I am not using any proxy or vpn even my tor browser is off too still ip chaged error giving frustation. second reason I am frusted that my public IP and private IP is not chaged.
one more your windows pc freeze 3 times from morning.
do you need in detailed technical reason why I want to talk with them.
hr : no no no *hang up*
after 2 minute *my landline ring*
hr : network engineer on other side.
fair enough2 -
Fixing a bug under Drupal 8 has a bright and an other bad side
The bad sight is that you slowly get insane trying to fix a bug.
The bright side is that you get to see the lead the lead dev, who assigned you this bug, to get insane too 😁 -
Mini-rant
Dear HR people, if you don't provide enough info about the positions that you have at hand forget about me wasting time on call-first acknowledgements to later on realize what kind of waste of time it was!
Sure, making business connections is important but without taking into consideration the other side time is all but respectful, in a professional context.
So, balance your shit and make the call worth the time of all the parties.
Fucking thanks.1 -
I’m not suicidal. But It’s scary how much I envy people I know who recently died. They have zero problems. No need to look for a job, like I have to right now. No sense of fear or anxiety about screwing up relationships. No worry about health or wealth or any of that. Just done. Like I said, I’m not suicidal. Too scared to hurt myself and too afraid that on the other side I would regret it (yes, i happen to actually know it’s not just blackness and non-existence). When you're done with your side of a project but you're waiting on other people.... Then you're the one that still gets bitched at by Mr. CEO man. Piss off, I've done my part. No I can't just upload it the way it is, no I won't upload it the way it is. Go tell the other spit fucks to get me their shit so I can finish the project.1

Really hate the dumb feelin I have getting used to new frameworks/languages or whatever....but on the other side is a smarter me... PUSH THROUGH DUMB DUMB!!1

Monitoring goes does in one of our server racks, one I had just been working in (other side of the building). Hmm, odd. Oh wait its back online again. Better go take a quick peek to see whats up, just in case. Walks over to rack. Everything seems fine. Walks back to desk. About 15sec later. Fqdn.plsfckof is offline again. -_-

Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.
It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -
I'm working in a company that still use Flash for softs/websites... On the other side, il be working on m'y free time on a cultural app3

I have a question on the Signal app.
Two family members have an extensive chat history. One of them accidentally deleted the data. The backup function was not active. However, the other side still has all the data. Both are using Android smartphones.
How to transfer the data? Re-sending works only five messages at a time, which is not practical with some thousand messages.
Is it possible to export the data from one smartphone e.g. via USB to a PC, then import that via USB on the other?10 -
I'm refactoring one of our react apps. And want to kill people so much !!!! Why the hell do you write if true return true else return false ?!?!!! Decomposing coupled classes in independant on es doesn't work if they are still coupled !!!!! Reducers must be done in functional !!!!!!
If you can't write in english then don't FUCKING WRITE IN ENGLISH YOUR FUCKING COMMENTS !!!!!!!! Comments are there to help other to understand YOUR code, other need to be able to réas it !!!!!
WHY ?!?!?!
On the bright side it means some dojos....1 -
Worst argument/fight was on a game I was working on.
One of the other devs was waiting for me to write some server Code before calling the endpoints on the client.
After writing the server Code I added the client side Code and committed it to our repo.
They had a massive go at me for doing work for them and threatened to remove my Code and replace it with their own code. -
Sometimes I like to see how the other side live and just watch people in a computer store.
There are the nervous tip-toers who don't want to attract attention. The point and lookers, who read the sign and nod and show they understood.
There are the ones who just wander aimlessly trying to look like they know what they want.
Finally there are the 'expert helpers' who know enough 'techie' words to convince anyone around that they know what they're talking about.
It's like a people zoo.1 -
It's a tradition, I guess (and these travelled here from the other side of the globe so it's something special ;) )

Peoples opinion of ASP?
Any hints for learning/using/I got assigned a big project and have no idea what I'm doing?
I said that I know Java. That's half of the word JavaScript. Which you can use while making a web page along side of PHP. PHP kinda sounds like ASP if you say it a bunch of times really fast. That's probably why I have this project...? I can't think of any other reasons?!?!10 -
Sometimes, "a different error, yes progress" is an illusion. It's like pushing a car that has broken down up a hill, after you finally reach the top, it starts rolling down nicely, only to meet another larger hill on the other side.3
-
We have hand sanitizers that are usually empty and spray way too much leaving your hands drenched in liquid
Also, one side has gates which means you have to touch your security card to get in and on the other side there are the elevators so you have to touch the buttons outside and inside to get away, or do it with your elbow
Point is, could be better :p -
Most of the mockery and derisive talk at lunch was directed towards: middle management. - even if they were present at the table.
I too, have struggles with our PO: he was developer but is totally out of our development, what he kinda accepts and lets us do our stuff... BUT from time to time he wants to meddle with our architecture even though he is not even capable of writing more than a sentence into our ticket description, and his only "vision" is the KISS principle. Totally triggers me.
On the other hand I am also part time working as a scrum master and thus get to know the shit show from the other side: sitting between all parties with their particular, contradicting interests - all that shitty "politics" you don't have have to care about if you just code.2 -
Any good recommendations for creating PDFs with Python? ReportLab seems powerful, but a steep learning curve. Looked at a couple other options quickly.
Side note...for as popular as PDFs are...it is surprisingly difficult to create them.3 -
The more I work on the backend forms validation side of my .NET Core project the more I understand how to fuck up web forms in general... 😈
Never underestimate the necessity of a backend validation other then the frontend one. 👿4 -
On one side, I don't want devs in my firm to know about devRant //Coz they know my %Username%
But on the other side, the more, the merrier.. I could rant about stuff with all those I work with..3 -
After the long haul of designing, structuring and finally implementing, my side project is done. The only challenge I faced was to not lose interest or get distracted :p
I made this to get a hang of haskell. It adds haskell functionality to your shell and lets you apply functions to outputs of other programs(ls,ps,df etc)

1. Reading eBook “Beginners in vb6”
2. Made a calculator with vb6 to help me in Math homework
3. Made few other desktop apps on vb6 for fun
4. Got interested in Websites so started with WYSIWYG Microsoft FrontPage
5. Started learning frontend and backend coding from WYSIWYG Dreamweaver (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
6. Then custom coding on Sublime. Made around 6 side projects (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
7. Started learning core JavaScript and followed by other programming languages
8. Interest came in making Android and iOS apps. I learnt Java and Swift for it
9. Now I span between Web and Mobile Apps -

Anyone expirienced wit MQTT or thingstream.io
P.s. there support also can go and choke on some dicks!5 -
So I resigned from work 6 months ago and they counter offered with a sweet pay deal as they were totally fubar without me
That 6 month deal expired today and they are totally surprised that Im not going back to full time (so I can work on my start-up side project)
I've offered to go back part time on a more reasonable salary and they are totally pissed. Surely the writing was on the wall!!
Here is an idea. When your bus factor is 1... Hire some other people! -
You know the point where you should stop coding and think back about what the hell are you doing because the shit is getting crazy?
I just passed it whooshing at the speed of light, leaving behind me moments where removing readme.md changes the error being thrown and using `${someStringVariable}` gives different results from just using the variable - and I do not intend to stop.
I want to see the fiery hell of JavaScript and emerge on the other side victorious or a broken man. No other option.1 -
CTO: I want you to take up a side project and push it to production. Atleast 1 per quarter. Also, you have to keep making tiny enhancements to the website on weekends. And it would be great if you can mentor and help the other team with architecture. And, don't you feel itchy that the app you made in that hackathon is not used by any user? Productionize it. Don't forget to update me on your primary task at the end of biweekly sprint, that goes without said.

I built an api to sync data between two systems. It is simple, if I have new data to send, I call their api with data. If success, get Json response back or error if not.
Today the guy from other side asked me for "acknowledgement" endpoint. I was literally WTF?
He explained me very clear, when I call their api, it can be either success or fail, so for those success or fail, he will send the response to my "ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ENDPOINT" to tell me if success or not.

Do you usually spend some of your time learning new programming language/pattern/technology? I mean, I am not the type of person who does same thing over and over again, also like learning new things (I spend a lot of time per month studying new things), trying to get experience and trying new technics, but other side of me thinks that I need to be the best in one of them... My mind flashes blue screen of death sometimes when I am thinking about this...2
-
The biggest things I’ve probably learned working on side projects are patience and planning. Side projects are a great place to hone your skills of negotiation with other people, but I’ve personally learned a great deal about the process of architecture, simply by doing side projects where I’ve experienced scoping and tooling problems later on. Being patient lends itself to getting better at planning. Working with others on side projects has given me insight into “when to hold em and when to fold em”...and again, this patience education has often helped me be a better planner for a multitude of tasks.

I have two jobs, one is developing a web site with a CMS and the other one is the back-end of a web platform. I like both, but the first one is on front-end phase, which I hate, and I closed all the pending tickets on the second one. So I don't want to work on the first one but I have to because of the due date, and tomorrow I leave on vacations which means side projects,
Please fellow devs and ranters what should I do? (Quitting is not an option)1 -

How are we feeling about the new Ryzen lineup for workstations that can do a bit of gaming on the side?
I'm so looking to go back to team red, but I don't know how beneficial the no of cores Ryzen provides is for compiling, static analysis and other dev tasks.
Anyone have experience with Ryzen for dev'ing?4 -

I write a quick prompt thinking nothing of it, just trying to generate an image to illustrate the next baddie in the dungeon, but I nail it on the first try and the resulting image PHYSICALLY affects me.
What the fuck, now I cannot unsee. I didn't think this was possible. I assumed the whole "cursed photo" thing was just kids being easily disturbed, turns I was wrong. is pre-debugging a good thing?
I have a habit of implementing a project(for e.g. a mobile app) like this: See the project, break the tasks to be done into small parts(Like UI layouts- setting, listeners to implement , graphics involved, background threads required, databases necessary, etc.)and then code each of them step by step , while simultaneously testing their working (For all possible test cases I could think of ) side - by side. this results in my project getting developed in far more time than other people, but I always have something good and working all times to show to my bosses. But I really feel stupid when I spend 2 hours handling the animations and ui while I have yet to look into databases and other more important stuff
I guess that's a habit from my good old python days(its IDLE was a playstation for me) but I wish to know better approaches,if any?4 -
TMW you realise the only projects that got me somewhere were my side ones. Everything else I've built for other people is either defunct or never came to life in the first place.2

You just have to fucking love it... Trying to get a pull request merged into our master, but because we *must* use fast-forward-only a single change on the master forces a rebase on my side, and an other complete build which takes some 15 minutes.
And of course the entire dev team is in goddamn overdrive and working their ass off, so here I'm sitting hoping to chance on a 'calm' 15 minute slot on the master without any other merges... Let's try attempt number 5 to merge this sucker. -
JavaScript has made my mind a battlefield of positive and negative thoughts. One side is telling me I'm not good enough, I cant do anything on my own, I dont understand how to do anything and it's always going to be like that. And the other side is telling me I'm fine it's a whole new side of programming (compared to python) and I just have to get used to it and its behavior, and I have to practice more and find good resources (which I have now thanks to a lot of you) idk I'm just struggling cause I realize how far behind I am and I wont be able to get and hold a job if I'm this shit at everything1

So I am in a dilemma right now... I have like two lifes right now: One the one side I am a student in applied computer science and on the other side I am already working in a Dev company and as a freelancer. Compared to my work, university is boring as hell. I would love to just skip university and start my own company with my other freelancer friend! We already have some clients so we would have a good start. But many people, like my parents for example, told me that need at least degree to achieve something in life. I told them that I would try do earn some certificates (like Cisco) but they are still not happy with this idea. So I would love to hear your opinion guys... Do you think that a degree is absolutely necessary? Thanks in advance!5

funny how linkedin lunatics compare "not taking job due to multiple offers" to "not giving a job after giving a job offer"
this may seem similar, but on one side there's a company, with running operations and having multiple employees to take up on the work load of the leaving employee. even if some guy backed out on an offer, they still have employees and can continue their search.
but on other side their is an employee serving 60-90 days notice period. he/she have put a notice period due to a job guarantee and is out of livelihood if offer is rescinded2 -
why argue when you can just change it to your opinion and make the impression that no other opinion exists and then go find new people to groom so they get used to your way while being none the wiser and then eventually overwhelm the other side of the argument with numbers1

Any Spacemacs users here? I'm debating a switcheroo from sublime. I know my way around vim, so general usage shouldn't be a problem.
I'm more interested in the long term use. I guess since its just some kind of emacs layer, it should be pretty fucking stable for the foreseeable future, but how is the plugin support?
I'm currently doing React at work, and a couple of other Node side projects. Syntax highlight should be sorted out for me. I would like to tailor it somewhat for productivity, like a good file explorer, integrated terminal and other auto tidbits like auto brackets, auto close tags and whatever else. Any good tips on plugins for me?
Also, looking for a nice color theme.3 -
Today marks the end of my first week as a full-time employee in this company (been here a month as a part-time before being hired).
I joined as a QA agent, but they put me in localization duty (in addition to QA) about two weeks in. This week, they told me I'd be responsible for the whole translation process, from choosing the tools to implementing them.
On one side, I'm excited as hell to have some responsibility. On the other, afraid I'll fuck it up and wreck my shiny new position.
Any tips on not fucking up you new job? 😅3 -
Sometimes, switching coding languages can be bad if they are the same "kind".
Found myself trying to use C# concept, keywords and syntax while doing Java.
That can be kinda frustrating when one is your main language at work and the other is just for side personnal project1 -
We needed to decide which JS library to integrate in a project. I investigated two libs both os and commercial and made a nice table to compare the pros and cons side by side. Important to note that both fullfilled nearly all of my technical requests and there are zero other comparable projects or products.
Now our Boss needed to make the final decision. He shortly looked at the Excel File and said:
I don't like opensource software because they will abandon the project if they earn no money. Also I don't like the other one. It's too expensive and it's developed by only a small company! I'll let you know which risk i'll take!
You guessed it: Still no decision after a few weeks. I'd say he will go for the os lib...
Idiot2 -
So I've been in a new job(in a nearshore company) for roughly 2 months, and has been a marvelous experience. They hire constantly and for me that's a good sign but welp.
Today I got a message in linkedin from an unknown guy who applied to a mobile job offer, asking me if I could recommend him for the opening. From one side I feel awkward, I don't know the guy, his skills, his drive for learning and from other side I know how hard can be to land a job, but asking a stranger to get a recommendation... First time that happened to me, I don't know if the guy is at the end of the rope or is just trying to get the easy path.
PS: at this very moment in the company, I barely know the hiring and management people at the company 🤷♀️1 -
Making distributed scheduler that queue and run tasks on containers or other executors in future and also pulls new tasks from defined git repositories.
Tasks are added based on simple yaml configuration.
Need that for my side projects that gather data from multiple sources from time to time.
k8s looks to heavy for that and airflow can’t be configured like I want it to be so I started writing my own on Monday.
Nearly finished poc version.2 -
For experienced developer I don't see the point of doing simple take home test in interview. The test is too small and can't cover many things, why don't the hiring manager look at my github and believe I can deliver the simple test and pass it without doing it? Screw crud test that's for junior.
I think company want to hook you and make you spend time and prevent you to interview other companies to avoid competition. That's the only reason I can think of from their side.
What do you think?12 -
- Get comfortable with Angular 10, at least to the point where it's not too far skill-wise from Vue 3.
- Getting better at using Terraform, AWS and GitLab, and possibly picking up another cloud provider (like DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr).
- Being used to the C4 model and being less uncertain about how I can model software systems even if I end up switching from (C4-)PlantUML to Structurizr.
- Progressing on some OSS projects, namely like All Contributors and other side projects I've put on hold.
- Getting a new laptop (when I know which one would suit me more). -
So being in ops, I have certifications in networking and Linux, and am currently working on my Certified Kubernetes Administrator exam.
I've been talking to a few "professional" (they have jobs) devs that I personally know, and with the exception of 1, it seems like version control, automation, networking, and server related tasks are beyond them.
As I want to get into the dev side of things (devops preferably), I feel somewhat overwhelmed at some of the requirements of the job, especially knowing that I cannot take too much of a pay hit as I have a family to support.
My question is this, based on real world experiences with hiring, how much weight do you think knowing your way around networks, cloud, virtualization, servers, and all of the other things ops does when it comes to getting your foot in the door for a dev job?
I've casually looked around, and it seems that getting the foot in from this side is almost impossible.2 -
Some very friendly neighbor bought new wifi probably yesterday and it literally fucked up my wifi speed. I easily got like 30Mbits in the toilet, now it is only 2-5 megs dropping to 300kbits sometimes... Very fucked up. All channels are full and what is worse, if some channel is good on one side of the apartment, it is flooded on the other...
The only solution seems to be 5GHz, but it sucks, because its range is soooo small between these concrete walls, I would need at least 2 extenders lol.8 -
Thinking could configure the server while being productive and fixing a bug. But noooo selenium has to be intrusive and take over the entire screen while it does it's shit, I move the window I'm working in to the other screen and selenium decides to open up another window on that screen...

So i was trying to learn php from a udemy course. The guy there mixes a hell lot of php with html, like all the pages are .php with html content and mini <?php ... ?> Scripts in between everywhere: titles, swl queries running and displaying outputs as html with echo php variables, etc..
Now am not much versed with client server data model, but isn't there supposed to be clear distinction between the server side and the client side? He puts a form there using echo "html string" , rrcieves the form input in the string's action , runs an sql query and generates another set of html strings. All in one file.
Is it how major php websites work? On the other hand My web dev friend om who works a lot with js usually runs 2 seperate aws instances for frontend and backend and makes them communicate via apis9 -

Just experienced the other side of "but it works on my machine"
Had problems with some code, stopped by professor office asking for help, downloaded the .sh from our git and it magically works -
Have some questions to testing.
Right now we are at the production end for first version. So far it was said to use Selenium IDE for Browser side testing, which was barely possible for the size of the website...
Is there other software or are there concepts I can read and inform myself to get into that point to teach myself properly?

Fix github for Android. On the main repository screen there's no way to copy dem URL. You have to navigate to a file first. I get annoyed by this so often.

Also focus more on how to deal with the business side of product development, how to 'deal' with sales/operations in a professional environment.
During my education the focus was mainly on the pure software engineering side, not so much on the 'real world environments'.
Personally I have no problems dealing with other departments, but some of my colleagues do struggle with the daily 'confrontations' between product development and operations. -
Sometimes I just have a crazy idea for an amazing feature I could add to a side project.
Then my brain goes into a fight with itself over this feature, one side saying "that's a lot of work, not worth it" and the other side "but then we could also do this and that and hey maybe we could even simplify other stuff a little bit" and in the process getting really fond of that feature. After some time, the idea is really optimized because the lazy side of my brain hates unnecessary work.
Anyway, I just came home, created a new branch and deleted a quarter of my code base which is now obsolete. -
I never had a lot of faith in my dev competence to begin with.
It gets even worse on my current (and also first) job. So far I have been handed solo projects that I need to deliver in a small amount of time using tools I have no experience with. I have two other colleagues I can ask my questions, but they are too busy working on other projects they got handed. Which leaves me 80% of the time on my own.
The bright side of it is if I make it alive somehow, my resume will be diverse.4 -

Today I'm gonna interview a guy that's may take my place at the current location\client, it's my time being at the other side of the table x3
Though, I'm gonna do both an interview and if capable a home assignment.
Anything else I need to take into consideration? -
Friday, when you're wrapping up you're solving all the bugs there is and Monday the hello from the other side asking you to come again.
-
There better be a special place for the frontend dev I just replaced. All this absurd html, angular and css obsolete code everywhere 😩
Who other than none-devs uses bootstrap? And who makes a layout, using only 11 columns and shifting it 1 to the side? Whyyyy5 -
Yes, the bug is always on our side. Other teams are immaculate and they write the purest, most perfect code possible.

Living abroad during corona times is shit. Trying to visit the family back home...
2019: it's too risky, I won't chance it
2020: still too risky, I won't chance it, even though technically I can now
2021 - Jan to Oct: I can go now, but I can end up getting stuck at the other side. I'll wait just a bit longer
2021 - November - right, quick, I'll book just THREE short days to say hi to the family...
BOOKED
2021 - days later: LOCKDOWN AGAIN MOTHERFUCKER! Your flights are GONE! Try again next time fool!2 -

I am building a side project to build a recommendation system for research papers. Since it's my first attempt, any tips? Also, my plan is to get it in the cloud, build a separate webpage to summon data from it. Honestly, most of it is three-fourths imagination, one-fourth google queries. The cloud idea is solely to provide it means to train real time.
I plan on using Python for this, other than the html/css frontend.
As someone who is very new to such a project, what should I know before I start?
Thanks,

Well... mmc.exe got blocked today after an update...
Microsoft management console that is... And a bunch of other stuff with it... Like device manager....
Eventually resorted to gpedit and even so I still can't print (🙃🙃).
Getting a fucking Mac with the idiotic touchbar and the ridiculously low ram tomorrow (for real).
Love having an Alienware with a 6700hq and a 950 pro that I can't take advantage of because of the OS fucking up all the time...
P.S. Yes I also have Linux on it but you can't really enjoy the.... 👽 side of things with it!2 -
What is today's standard of server-side rendered pages, today's replacement of php since everyone seems to hate it? Is it Vue/react/angular SSR? Or is it some other technology I haven't heard of?13
-
Commons sense/ best practice:
Is It ok ti initialize (angular) variabile as {id:" ", name:" ", ..} to avoid errors in the browser console such as "can't get ID of undefined"?
My concern is code readability and debugging, is not ok for the ones looking at the browser console to have such useless errors, on the other side you have to initialize some variables with object that have a lot of keys(id name ecc...) Whith empty fields...useless.
The apps work both cases, whit or whitouth initialization.
By the way we are getting such data by api calls later on.3 -
I have to stay awake for a long ass meeting in a timezone on the other side of the planet. Most of which I'll spend staring at a meeting window doing nothing. I got pizza. How should I spend the night?3

Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side, of course! I mean, what did you expect? Some kind of deep, philosophical answer? It's a chicken, not Socrates. Let's move on.8 -
Working along side another consultant house for a client, we have our shit ready weeks ago for integration testing (as was the deadline) against the other guys. We tell them we are ready, but we need them to be ready too, there are some tricky format things and we basically let them spec it out since they integrate further down the line.
They come _NOW_ way over deadline with change requests in message formats, like MOTHERFUCKER, IM ON MY WEEKEND NOW. We KNEW the client wanted it ready next week, thats why we were ready in time. You are not gonna cost me my weekend.
(is what i wanted to say, the devs on the other team are super nice and just absolutely overloaded with work which i cannot help them with)
One thing is certain, tonight my internet access mysteriously dissappears and wont open until monday morning. Such a shame -

Does anyone know of any websites that have project ideas with requirements/user stories. I generally get side tracked if I sit down and just build something. There are a few full stack projects on freecodecamp with user stories which made me wonder if there are any other similar sites.2 -
Hello from the other side.
I just finish my first open source project on Github, feel free to fork and improve it. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so I am extending some functionalities from zend components such as zend-mail and zend-view.

Starting at uni (Software) and moving to the other side of the country, in my new apartment in about 7 hours, so excited, but also so scared, any tips helpful comments?3 -
Right on my way to the city I'll be working in for the next 3 weeks.
I work for a medium sized company, belonging to a big AF, like in one of the world biggest players in their branch, company.
I got transferred to another location on the other side of the country for a few weeks, as part of my apprentice-ship.
I'm already thrilled to start work tomorrow. -
For my side project, I spend more time in thinking about other thinks like Hosting, Disk Space and RAM rather then actually building the application. Lol..fml

If you had to evacuate your office due to a fire without your laptop and the office was destroyed could you continue to work? Do you have offsite recovery laptops?
Developers usually have flexibility where they can work from but sometimes do not have backup machines available and configured.
As a side question - would your other critical processes - accounting, HR, sales be able to continue to keep your business going in a disaster - or would they be like deer in headlights?6 -
I wonder one day whether we will br able to take snapshots of the internet given the amount of bandwith vs the storage at out disposal... reason from my side will be to see the difference correlated over time especially with regards to the "legal crap". Also having the ability to see other people's "copy" overlayed with yours to see the actual organic nature of information.2

I wish I could be a quantum computing programmer! This way I can work on my side project while this other me attends all the boring meetings

Just a question about a generic social app. Using mongodb , 3 entities ,like comment and post . how do I display posts in feeds with comment count and like count . since its mongodb I can't do joins . the other way is to maintain a data structure on the server side . or yet another way would be making 2 extra queries to db for retrieving like and comments count . Any other way this is possible or is it possible to form a query in mongo db to retrieve all 3 at the same time???1

So I just failed my maths exam.
Nothing more to say except all other courses have way way better grades than my course.
So my teach's got two courses and both of them massively fucked up, course average (both) 4.5-5.6 (d- - f).
All other courses are just Soo way better that I just can't believe that fault is only on the student side here.
And to top it off, this scenario is not new at all.
Had the same shit with our courses failing unlike the others anothet time too.
FUCK YOU FR. NIELEN4 -
is it bad to put your jsx in useState for react?
const = handleClick = (sort) => {
if(sort.props.id == 'default'){
setSort(<ArrowUpward id='up'/>)
}
else if(sort.props.id == 'up'){
setSort(<ArrowDownward id='down'/>)
}
else if(sort.props.id == 'down'){
setSort(<LineAxis id='default'/>)
}
}
the other alternative is using template logic which i think looks uglier, someone told me i did server side rendering in the browser2 -
So, I've a side project for some sort of touristic blog, it will have some special graphic customization (interactive maps and other things) and I'm not sure if deploying a WordPress and creating some plugins for the customization or start a website from scratch, I've googled a little bit the pros and cons of WordPress because I've never used it but I'm still not really sure

Finally! Oderland supports node.js for all accounts. Huzza! If only I had time to give it a try. Well, soon enough. Unlike many other ranters, I have actually nothing against PHP. It's just that with node.js it's *one* language for the server and client alike :) I like a lot the idea of coding even the server side in javascript.

Recently had an issue where we forgot to deploy some API updates on live when we pushed an app version live (we test on dev/staging)
Does anyone have any experience in mitigating this risk? Can't do a final test on live since that has permanent side-effects (e.g. Automated emails getting sent to other users)2 -
Office prank I pulled: Halloween party, the office is decorated, and there is a fake spider that I use to scare unwary victims.
Office prank other pulled: a printout picture of the grudge ghost was place in places like, laptop, side of a wall, clinic curtain, etc. That even if Halloween is over there as still some victims.. -
My current "file/media server" is a crappy old falling apart windows box with a stupid mismash of internal and external drives with no redundancy. That sucks for a number of reasons, so planning on dropping around a grand or so (including drives) on doing it properly.
Space requirement would be around 20TB-ish of usable space, with 1 disk's worth of redundancy. That can include a newish 5TB drive I have lying around however. Would also run either Plex / Jellyfin, so some horsepower for transcoding would be nice (but no need for more than a single 1080 stream at once.) 24/7 operation, so don't want anything too power hungry.
Current (loose) thinking on the hardware side is an AM4 board and a reasonably low end CPU, 3x8TB WD golds. Software side, probably CentOS, then mergerfs + snapraid. Anyone got any insight as to other options? Hardware not my speciality in particular, so open to suggestions.14 -
when programming fails.
when I updated the firmware on this piece, something went wrong and the device broke.
Google'd and learned that the only way to unbrick is to break the other side open and remove a non-removable battery, to reset. else it will stay bricked forever -
Have any devs done bar work before..?
I've always enjoyed doing things outside of work, and I work 3-4 days a week in my main job to create time for this. It's great for my mental health, and means I can optimise the main job for pay/good benefits and fulfil my "other needs" (stimulation/challenge/enjoyment) in other places.
The main things for me are dev contracting on the side or acting/singing, to a lesser extent travel, a bit of activism and law study. Just because 🤷♂️
Especially re: my last rant with *that* email from HR on Friday, I'm tempted to be a bit more strict about only doing three days and picking up something else.
Although I know the pay is awful, I really want to try bar work on the side just to do something different.
Has anyone else done bar work before?9 -
I fucking hate math. Today tried to make 2 unequal rectangles align along 1 axis. This isn't that hard when they aren't rotated but it fucking when they are rotated. I know I have to use geometry to get them aligned and I got it somewat working but as the gap is bigger so is the drift in which it over compensates to the other side and I have no fucking clue how to fix this 😩.
The worst thing is tomorrow I have to be at this again1 -
No one gives a damn when you're alive and dead on the inside, they only care when moment that you die and you walking on to the other side.2

Have any of you windows 10 users spotted, that the x^2 button on the standard calculator is slightly bigger by a few px to the left side than the other ones?? 😁 Not sure whether this has been discussed before or not 🙂1

Hi everyone am a CS student.
Along with C/C++ taught in colleges, Am learning C# side by side and getting used to it.
So am learning it from internet PSA. I already did one C# course on udemy. And also practices a lot about the language features.
As it's very big language am really confuse what should I know more about that language. I mean which C#.NET classes are important in industry and which not and other stuff too.
So am just wanting answer from a specifically a C# developer which works in industry and uses it everyday.2 -
What do you think happens when enterprise software meets big data and user generated content? Idk, ask Github. These guys are sitting on a goldmine. The paradise of every big company. The only reason they're not faang is cos it's niche but they'll probably be influential (read, big bad) in the coming years
I predict the copilot thing is a benevolent side. Or maybe it still seems so since it's still in infancy and hasn't aggressively started snatching most developer jobs. What will become of us when that time comes? What other form of technology can computer still require our assistance to create?16 -
Side projects, also, when I read something interesting I make a small example using it myself to understand it, well some other things too like: attend meetups, pair programming, helping buddies with their issues (you don't have to know everything to give a hand), read blogs/books
-
I want to create a invitation system where a person send invitation link for a room to other person by entering there username, email and on the other side when invited user click on sender link he/she can join the room. Can somebody help me? I'm using Reactjs, Nodejs, mongoose1

Only just got around to listing to the devRant podcast #1 this morning. DHH is a little potty mouth 🙃
Excellent content none the less! I kind of agree on DHH's stance on project managers.
On a side note, what other podcasts do you guys listen to? I quite like most of the content from jupiter broadcasting. LAS and Coder Radio specifically. -
I think saying "This side <my_name>" to introduce myself during a call is very annoying to the person on the other side of the call.
Is this true for all?3 -
Ask the community who's hiring, visit user groups and other tech gatherings. Being an organizer really helps also, put that on your resume along with any highlighted side projects. When interviewed and asked something you don't know, say "I'm not sure, but I'm really eager to learn"
-
I'm getting laid off for a month.
Any tech related suggestions of what I should do in my excess free time? Got a book (Clean Code) I want to read. Some side projects I might tinker around with. But other than that no concrete ideas.11 -

Hello everyone, I'm looking for an advise, i just move to a new country and i was doing some side projects as a freelance to set my portfolio to start looking for a job here in the USA, can you tell what is the best way to apply for a dev job here? Any other advise is welcome -
Soo my workplace is shared with my wife and mine is located in the corner where only a size of a pedestal can fit in!! On the other side, I bought a good gaming chair nice and comfy but I cant use it!!

What's your way of arranging open code files in your IDE's window?
I usually have 2-3 code files open side by side and keep the lines at a maximum of 80-120 characters.
Other devs I know mostly have only one file open in full width at any given time... which I can't wrap my head around. -
Scrolling numbers in Spotify on a iPad while i was listening on the other side of the office while rebooting phone etc.
Best i can do is sticking a stickynote under a mouse. Fun for 0,5 sec -
He : Hey dude, my computer just said hello to me.
She : So what dude?
He : I think it's a Dell

Maybe I can paint myself up like I'm 80 and sneak aboard a bus of senior citizens and then wash the makeup off on the other side3
