Search - "sd"
My dad found a phone a few weeks ago and asked me what he should do with it. Knowing how much it hurts to lose personal data, I said I could try to find the owner and send it back.
My first attempt was to search through the files on the SD card in order to find an identifying document (CV, bill, address...) but there were only family pictures.
My second attempt was to unlock the phone and check the information about the owner and the accounts linked to it. But for this to be possible adb has to be enabled. Good thing is that that particular brand shows an option for activating adb on the recovery menu.
But then, it's Android Oreo and I haven't found a way to lift the lock pattern. I thought I could bruteforce it over the shell (as I found there could be about 1300 possibilities for 2 to 5 point patterns), but there is the same attempt throttling as on the screen so that would take ages.
Finally, I found the owner in the most "social" way : The phone was displaying the weather for a particular place. It turns out that there are only 3K inhabitants in that city, si I thought that a big enough Facebook group might help me find the owner. So I posted a message on a 500 people FB group dedicated to this city with a selfie of the owner : someone identified her within 20 minutes.
Mission accomplished 😎42
Wanna try your luck?
OH HELL NO! xD
(don't try at home kids 😂😂😂)

The following meeting occurred at a client between a recently added client PM and our team, we'll call her Shrilldesi, previously from one of the main consulting vendors.
*Meeting begins after 15 minutes of bullshitting, waiting for people to file in*
Shrilldesi: "Ok everyone, let's get started
TeamMember: "We're still waiting for Z and W, not sure why they're late."
SD: "We can start there. It was decided had to lay off Z and W, because we didn't have enough work."
Moi: "Wait, what. Who made that decision? Why weren't we consulted on this? We have another project starting next week that they were needed for. They just delivered the entire public facing rewrite, why would we let them go?!"
SD: "It was decided by myself, pajeet, and venkata looking at the backlog. Not enough work, week gap."
Moi: "This is going to hurt our ability to deliver the next phase. When are we going to start interviewing new people, the project begins next week?"
SD: "We will interview new resources as needed."
Moi: "Who is we? And 'as needed' is yesterday, or realistically several weeks ago as the. project. starts. next. week. Also, we're obligated by federal law to bring back anyone we lay off before we hire anyone else for the same position."
SD: "Interviews will be done by myself, Mohd, and Pajeet."
Moi: "...can I point out that there's only one modestly technical person in that group, they're an admin, and none of them are from this team? How do you conduct an engineering interview without any engineers?"
SD: "That does not matter, I have watched enough to be able to ask your questions."
Moi: *anger intensifies* "I have to respectfully disagree. I don't feel it's appropriate to cut us out of the process of interviewing our own team members."
SD: "It is decided, we will take care of it, let us move on. Next, we need to find work for the Manasa, she doesn't have anything to do."
Moi: *sharpens baseball bat* "...shouldn't we just fire her then?"
SD: "Oh that is so mean, why would we fire her? We were thinking she might be able to do some of my project management work."
Moi: *sharpening intensifies* "You do realize it's a violation of H1-B statutes for someone to be employed in work other than what is stated on their contract, and Project Managers are specifically listed as not specialized skillsets per federal law."
SD: *ignores question* "We also need to find work for the offshore team, they don't have enough to do. Please find them work for the next period."
Moi: *checks how long the wait period is for ar-15s*
SD: "We also have a new person rolling onto our team, he comes from the xyz team, Dikshit *gestures to person we all figured was lost*. He will be handling our front end development."
Moi: *seething hatred* "WE JUST LET TWO EXCELLENT FRONT END DEVELOPERS GO. WE DO NOT NEED DIKSHIT."
SD: "Please calm down. We will be replacing the other two shortly, there is no problem."
Moi: "Have you heard nothing I've said? Did you even run this by legal and HR? Why did we let them go in the first place? Why do we even need Dikshit?!"
SD: "I said it before, please listen. There is not enough work for them. Dikshit will do front end. What is unclear?"
Note: There's not really any dramatization here. It's almost verbatim what happened. Eventually, the next project was cancelled, they incrementally rolled the rest of the local team off. They then had the cojones to express aghast anger when I notified them I would not be renewing my contract, and open hatred when I explained to them I was not a slave, and I refused to be a bag holder for the inevitable failure of a project without any chance of success. I don't really care what happened after that, they can all burn in their own little nepotistic shitshow of perpetual failure.4
Me: I'd like a new phone please.
Manufacturer: Okay, what do you look for in a phone?
Me: Well as long as the other specs are good, it's important to have a headphone port, SD card slot, and removable battery.
Manufacturer: Okay, fingerprint scanner. Got it.
Manufacturer: The only thing you want is a fingerprint scanner?
Me: No I don't care about that, what I want is-
Manufacturer: A fingerprint scanner, we know. Every device needs one.
Manufacturer: Shhh... Don't worry, we know our customers.29
This was typical for me:
Yesterday evening I was installing a webserver on my Raspberry Pi for experiments with WordPress. I began some days ago, but I had to stop because the downloads took at least to long.
So I started to logi in:
-> False Password
Wondering why it is not working a tried again. Same result. After some time I remembered that I changed my password.
-> false password
Tried again. Still false password. Then I remembered, that I used my another standard password.
-> false password
After that I felt a mix of angry and helplessness. After some other failed attempts I gave up.
I formatted the SD-Card and installed Raspian again.I started my Pi
-> false password
My thought: WTF, why does this not work!!
This was the moment when I got the brainwave that the Username wasn't Raspberry, it's Pi.
Then I hated myself.9
I flashed TWRP in my phone and it didn't boot anymore. I didn't have any image of any operating system in my sdcard and my pc hasn't a sd card slot.
So I started thinking, I googled for some solution, I tried the official tools, but nothing worked. So I started writing an adb script able to download the image from the server and install it in my phone.
While I was doing it I was also explaining my troubles to my no-tech friend. She's not confident with computers, she's able only to turn the pc on and go to Facebook.
She told me "why don't you put your sd card in another phone and download the operating system from it?"
She literally saved my day.
Sometimes we are so busy with our geek things and we forget trivial solutions4
A story about an Android TVbox which decided to become an iPad
Several years ago we've bought an android tv-box.
It served me and my family well for several years.
Specs are not that important in this story, but there they are:
Amlogic quadcore 1.4HGz
This device served us well - online TV, browsing, music, file sharing and so on. But recently cheap Chinese memory deciteed to take a break and damaged ROM. Because of that device won't boot. The only option was to take it apart and "short circuit" certain legs on memory chip and make it boot from SD card and install new firmware. After such operations tv-box worked well again.
Hoverer, memory glitched again and again and this algorithm was repeated for several months.
But that is not what is this story about.
One day memory went completely crazy and there was no way to install new firmware on it. It just hanged on install. (BTW, it was official firmware for this device)
But after countless attempts it finally worked! It installed the firmware and booted into launcher and connected to WiFi!
But now comes the most interesting part.
It was not android anymore.
It decided to became an iPad.
My dad logged in to his Google account via tv-box and got mail that someboby connected from our IP via iPad (we don't have an iPad) and using safari browser! Stock browser is not safari browser.....
"Ok, nvm, crazy glitch." - we thought.
But preinstalled play marked wont launch. Because he told us, that we're trying to connect from iPad.
And Google chrome page suggested to download chrome for iPad
And everything was acting like it is an iPad.
OK, downloaded iTunes, why not??? ._.
Tried to install elixir for android via apk from flash, but then memory glitched one more time, everything went black and tv-box had damaged ROM again...
After that we decided to not torment it anymore...
That's it. Poor Android TVbox that all his life dreamed to become an iPad. Rest in peace.2
Flashed an arch iso to my new raspberry pi 3, followed instructions for how to install yaourt from a decent site with good instructions...
...aaaaaand pacman is broken.
Reflashing the sd card now 😬12
*Me feeling productive on a day
Today I am going to start working on the complex part of my proect. Spends 1 hour deciding what all technologies to use , how to implement it, which design patterns to use .
Let's do it

Making some tiny css corrections
*3 hrs later

REALISED DIDN'T SET THE SIZE OF THE PARENT CONTAINER TO 100%
So much for thinking about being productive for today :(((5
Windows: Replace HDD with higher capacity.
MacBook Air: Start using SD card slot as external storage.10
Probably the most rage inducing data loss story...
When it comes to my cellphone I'm a data hoarder, I store each relevant meme, conversation, video, contact, nudes, etc. Had to replace my phone? Easy, change the SD.
I did this for about 4 years, had over 11GB of almost everything and anything in a 36GB SD, one afternoon my buddies and I went to a small tech convention and on our way to my car we got mugged by 5 armed men.
They took my brand new phone along with my wallet and all my cash, luckily I had GPS tracking enabled and we were able to pinpoint the exact location of my phone within 30min.
So far so good...
We called the cops and went with them, we found the car with illegal plates and weapons inside (knives, a bat, gun) so I tell the robbers were in there inside a closed cyber cafe and showed him the point on the map confirming this.
Cop: oh we can't do that we don't have an order...
Me: are you kidding me, here's the GPS, there's the car, there's the weapons, doesnt that count as at least probable cause or some shit?
Cop: we don't have that in this country, you can file a report and after 3 business days we can come here to inquire.
Me: (fucking lost it) do you fucking think they'll be here in 3 days?! I'll give you 500 bucks if you go bust their ass now.
Cop: (thinks about it) but what if they are armed? [4 patrols, 8 cops, 4 rifles and at least 6 guns plus vests] Maybe if you had contacts within the bureau we could have an order now...
I lost a lot that day, including respect to this fucked up system.
t(ಠ益ಠt) FUCK THE POLICE go eat a dick.10
Yesterday my my mother had problems with Office365 and called a servicedesk. They said her computer was slow and that an SD could improve the speed. My mother said that there already was an SSD in there to which he replied yes but that is for RAM, to make opening things faster you need an SD like in your phone...
Where is the world going?14
TLDR: First dinner with whole family, already 3 smartphones to "repair".
They buy cheap phones with just 8 GB of storage and then ask me to solve their issues with "insufficient space on the device" without removing pictures and videos because of course they are not aware of concepts like pc/cloud backup or using SD card as main saving location.
At least these phones are full of bloatware so I can easily disable something to gain enough storage to get rid of the notification (tricking them into believing that I solved all of their problems) while I set SD card as default and enlighten them about the wonders of Google Photo and its auto-clean function.
I'd really like to ignore them, but unfortunately that's the only kind of relationship I have with my relatives, I know that sucks but at least is something.
And I actually prefer to spend some minutes on someone else's phone than talk about politics or try to explain what exactly is my job and what I am studying 🙄6
Just trying to change a folder's name on the SD card on my phone... Whoops
I once got it to say "0 out of 100TB" or so. Jesus8
Boy: I want iphoneX
Me: buy it!
Boy: it's too expensive, my iphone616gb's memory is full!
Me: Take an android, maybe with an sd slot. There are many great cheap model.
Boy: Android sucks! I want an Iphone.
You know the code is in bad shape when you see variables starting with "get":
Me: ssl conn cannot be esrablished. Cert is not signed
Sr. Dev/architect: what url are you calling?
sd/a: yeah, I know that. But what is the url?
Me: *how the f... Did you get 'sr' and 'arch' titles, man???*
Me: why does it matter?
Sd/a: certificates depend on a url. Our LB selects a cert according to a request url
me: *buddy, I like you but I no longer look at you with respect like I used to before today...*11
LONELINESS IS REAL
I am a freshman in a university ( about to complete my first year ) with a girl to boy ratio of around 1:10. During my first semester I was spending a lot of time with friends, chatting up with people and making connections. Due to this my productivity as a dev, if I am even capable of being called that decreased ( I was not a developer before joining , but I had an aim of being one , esp at least the best in my batch ) after 1st year. In retrospect I did nothing productive till 3 months out of 4 in my first sem and the guilt hit me hard . During the last month I had to catch up with my much neglected studies and all I had done was a little bit of html and css, and barely scratched the surface of js( please don't judge me for this :) , I had to start somewhere < although I learned a little bit of C++ > ). BUT I WAS A HAPPY CUNT, and had no sign of lonelines. Now during this sem , I had made progress ( learn js with es6 syntax and still learning, did c++ and extended my knowledge ) . Currently I am working on my Vue full stack app ( along with express and some websocket library , TBD ) < yeh I learnt some backend too > , and increasing my knowledge of dsa using clrs. Although my productivity has increased manifolds but I know feel the need of closure. I am kinda happy with the fact that I know a lot of people around here ( thanks to my extroverted 1st semester ) but sometimes it hits me hard at night when I don't have a monitor to drown my eyes and thoughts in. I have increased my academic performance too but I need someone to share and express my feelings with. I could have made a girlfriend earlier but now most of them are taken and I have lost touch. But believe me, all I want is a companion to spend these lonely days and night ( not talking about as a friend ). Staying away from home isnt easy you know...m :(
KUDOS TO DEVRANT FOR DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY WHERE PEOPLE LIKE ME CAN FEEL SAFE IN OUR NATURAL HABITAT. I COULDN'T HAVE EXPRESSED MY FEELINGS ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT IN A PERSONAL BLOG ( where no one would have read it )
PS1: I apologise if I sounded arrogant about any of my skill, I didn't mean that way. I ain't even that good, just kinda proud of myself a little for achieving something I couldn't have thought.
PS2: Any type of suggestions and help is much appreciated ( considering I am a college student who went into some serious development 4 months ago , I am pretty impressionable ;) )
PS3: Please don't confuse this with depression. I am HAPPY BUT LONELY
PS4: Is there a way so that I can change my username?16
Raspberry pi worked perfectly fine. Reinstalled the sd card for some reason (on purpose) and now, no matter what system I flash, it always crashes at stone point. That point is random every fucking time.
I just want this fucker to work 😥19
OCR (The exam board for my course) are fucking thick in the head when it comes to anything computing.
- I get a mark or two for saying open source software is worse than thier propritary counterparts
- ALL open source software forks must also be make open source. They spend so much time going over the legal stuff BUT HAVE NEVER HEARD OF OPEN SOURCE LICENCING!
- One exam paper had a not gate picture with 2 inputs...
- I have to differentiate between portable and handheld! YOU MEAN HANDHELD DEVICES ARE NOT PORTABLE!?!!?!?
- In level 2 education, OCR say 1 MB = 1024 KB - In level 3, they say 1 MB = 1000 KB, and 1 MiB = 1024 KiB, and expect you to differentiate. Why do you expect the wrong answer in level 2!?
- INFORMATION FORMATS AND STYLES ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! If you look up synonyms for "style", "form" is there, and if you look up synonyms for "format", "style" is there.
- When asked for storage devices, I have to say "smartphone", "tablet", "desktop PC" - I mean yeah they store data but when you ask me for storage devices I will say "hard disk drive", "solid state drive", "SD card", etc. >.>
I could probably go on an on about this...
I sure do love being asked to copy-paste existing HTML/JS/CSS and being asked to just tweak it here and there, and then wait for other people's incompetence in copy-pasting... I sure do love being stuck with this sort of "education" ._.4
TL;DR; I unfucked a micro sd used by a nintendo switch with one command: fsck
I had noticed that the nintendo switch displayed way more storage usage then it should. I didn't mind at first, but at some point I couldn't download any games. When I checked I saw some ridiculous storage usage.
According to the system, all games summed up ~20Gb, but >100Gb was in use? Sounds retarded, so I did the following:
* Plugged it into laptop
* Spend one our searching for a way to to access this seemingly unknown filesystem
* Find out this filesystem is actually exFAT
* Find out that 2/3 sd adapters suck
* check filesystem with dust (A visually more pleasing version of du)
* Find 20Gb of files, nothing hidden or whatever
* run fsck
* "File system contains some errors want me to fix then?"
* check usage
As for the reason why this happened in the first place, my guess is that the switch labels the whole segment of the card as used before downloading a game and it something goes wrong, it shits itself.
Anyways, fsck is a pretty useful command.1
20TB storage with a micro SD? does the phone have 19.48TB space or is there an SD card that size?
I hate it when your non dev friend uses top notch hardware and I am stuck with a piece of shit junk15
Does balding scare the shit out of anyone else here? I am 19 and have started showing signs of male pattern baldness *sigh*. Just hope to make it to 25 without balding completely.21
I don't know why quiting vim is such a challenge for new users.
While Quit starts with q , so q is very logical for quiting 😬4
NUKE IT FROM ORBIT. It was when i was doing an assignment with my roommate, i was compiling something on my pi and ran netstat afterwards for no reason. I had an ssh-connection from china (logged in too). The pi was shutdown ASAP, i salvaged everything i needed from the sd and dd'ed raspbian on the disk again.
Turns out you were able to login via root (i thought i disabled it) with the password i set (root...). I learned from this, now external logins are only allowed via private key and i have fail2ban set up3
So I'm installing Ubuntu 18.04 iso (downloaded via Mobile Data) from an SD card through a USB adapter, (on an HDD)
What are you guys doing with your lives?7
Tonight, my long-time friend died. He was living in the basement for years, always reliable, always at my service, keeping my files, watching for my git repos, being my private cloud, and so many things more.
He wrote his last syslog entry at 0:21 a.m., passed away and never woke up.
I found him cold and motionless this afternoon, but could not do anything. Any attempt of reanimation failed.
Goodbye, little BananaPi, fare thee well, and if for ever.
I promise you, your legacy on SD card will live on with a new board.1
Finished the hacktober fest yesterday.. fastest 5 PRs I've ever made on my repos, I actually forgot to sign up at the beginning of the month.. I pity those who are following me.9
Thanks to devrant , now I can be one those people trying to look social in one those so called meets with personal touch where everyone is scrolling their Facebook (still)
Today my raspberry pi media center bricked itself (at least it won't boot properly. Than I thought I just format the SD card and reinstall everything. But than my windows pc won't boot properly because it's still running on old hdd and I suck at building PCs. Than I tried my ThinkPad with antergos and remembered that it is also dead because the last update broke something. And now I'm trying to boot my windows at least into safe mode and my ThinkPad to boot from the live stick to chroot and fix it. Still waiting since 15min for any progress.
Now is my old Oneplus One with an outdated nightly of a custom Rom my only working connection to the web.
I'm starting to think that waiting for the last minute to fix problems might not the best way for me.10
When people listen to a complete story and then ask who the villian was..
I went to the tech department at my school to get some solder and a few offcuts of wire, but some generous person gave me 6 raspberry pi's that he didn't need anymore! But that's not all, he also gave me 5 rangefinder sensors, 4 motors, a 4 digit 7segment display, a couple of sd cards, a few other various sensors, and some wires
Oh, and I got my solder, too :)5
I do not like the direction laptop vendors are taking.
New laptops tend to feature fewer ports, making the user more dependent on adapters. Similarly to smartphones, this is a detrimental trend initiated by Apple and replicated by the rest of the pack.
As of 2022, many mid-range laptops feature just one USB-A port and one USB-C port, resembling Apple's toxic minimalism. In 2010, mid-class laptops commonly had three or four USB ports. I have even seen an MSi gaming laptop with six USB ports. Now, much of the edges is wasted "clean" space.
Sure, there are USB hubs, but those only work well with low-power devices. When attaching two external hard drives to transfer data between them, they might not be able to spin up due to insufficient power from the USB port or undervoltage caused by the impedance (resistance) of the USB cable between the laptop's USB port and hub. There are USB hubs which can be externally powered, but that means yet another wall adapter one has to carry.
Non-replaceable [shortest-lived component] mean difficult repairs and no more reserve batteries, as well as no extra-sized battery packs. When the battery expires, one might have to waste four hours on a repair shop for a replacement that would have taken a minute on a 2010 laptop.
The SD card slot is being replaced with inferior MicroSD or removed entirely. This is especially bad for photographers and videographers who would frequently plug memory cards into their laptop. SD cards are far more comfortable than MicroSD cards, and no, bulky external adapters that reserve the device's only USB port and protrude can not replace an integrated SD card slot.
Most mid-range laptops in the early 2010s also had a LAN port for immediate interference-free connection. That is now reserved for gaming-class / desknote laptops.
Obviously, components like RAM and storage are far more difficult to upgrade in more modern laptops, or not possible at all if soldered in.
Touch pads increasingly have the buttons underneath the touch surface rather than separate, meaning one has to be careful not to move the mouse while clicking. Otherwise, it could cause an unwanted drag-and-drop gesture. Some touch pads are smart enough to detect when a user intends to click, and lock the movement, but not all. A right-click drag-and-drop gesture might not be possible due to the finger on the button being registered as touch. Clicking with short tapping could be unreliable and sluggish. While one should have external peripherals anyway, one might not always have brought them with. The fallback input device is now even less comfortable.
Some laptop vendors include a sponge sheet that they want users to put between the keyboard and the screen before folding it, "to avoid damaging the screen", even though making it two millimetres thicker could do the same without relying on a sponge sheet. So they want me to carry that bulky thing everywhere around? How about no?
That's the irony. They wanted to make laptops lighter and slimmer, but that made them adapter- and sponge sheet-dependent, defeating the portability purpose.
Sure, the CPU performance has improved. Vendors proudly show off in their advertisements which generation of Intel Core they have this time. As if that is something users especially care about. Hoo-ray, generation 14 is now yet another 5% faster than the previous generation! But what is the benefit of that if I have to rely on annoying adapters to get the same work done that I could formerly do without those adapters?
Microsoft has also copied Apple in demanding internet connection before Windows 11 will set up. The setup screen says "You will need an Internet connection…" - no, technically I would not. What does technically stand in the way of Windows 11 setting up offline? After all, previous Windows versions like Windows 95 could do so 25 years earlier. But also far more recent versions. Thankfully, Linux distributions do not do that.
If "new" and "modern" mean more locked-in and less practical and difficult to repair, I would rather have "old" than "new".13
When you see what worked for someone else with a similar issue on GitHub and run it.
Trust me, I hope I know what I'm doing too.1
Look what arrived today. I'm so excited to start tinkering. I might install Kali Linux on another micro SD card6
Can i train myself to think like a computer?
Means I wont to the best thing i can do in each second without even thinking ! Just like what a computer does13
Turns out I had some conversion issues and timing issues in the SD card file parser that I wrote... wtf it worked before I swear
It fully works now!!! I can now finally load presets from an SD card and apply them to the screen at my leisure.5
I'm the only one working on this anymore and every toolchain supporting the system (remember, we're using an ARM9 [initial strap CPU] AND an ARM11 (give or take an ARM7 slaved to the ARM9 that we don't have support for yet), all in tandem, and the only toolchain that remotely works is for ARM6 for some reason) hates the Linux kernel. Current goals: SD R/W support (currently RO), X, GNUTools, maybe a better fucking softkey driver (i'll have to find whoever made this one and fucking beat him), and a working joy2mouse/touch2mouse driver. Oh, and figure out if Swap would work either with the New 2DS/3DS' Bonus Drive (unused 64MB partition on NAND) without killing the NAND as the SD access is max. 1.2 MB/s read/write speed or so, which isn't fast enough for swap AND other things.
Read-only SD support
Weston (term only, can't click)
Standard 3DS/Standard 2DS/New 3DS (Models before 2017, the non-foldables, rebranded standard 2DSes) features only, not yet New 3DS/New 2DS-enhanced
Currently failing final compile because toolchain:
Preliminary custom R/W SD support4
Full HD 27' monitor 😍😍😍 when you can divide your screen into two halves easily and there's no need to do Alt+tab3
Arduino has a FLASH memory that stores data even without power. FUCK why did nobody tell me that sooner. 6$ to hell on that fucking SD module and 12$ on fucking SD. Well gotta rewrite that code.16
"Intense coding. A day passes. Wait, how the fuck did my code work? It doesn't make any sense!"
It happens so, so often, God why 😐1
When you are trying to be supportive to a colleague but he sees your act as condescension on your part. BITCH I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOU, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE TO WORK WITH YOU SO PLEASE KNOW THE BARE MINIMUMS TO DO THE TASK. Also he complained to others that he was offended . He was tryna learn react before knowing es6 and nodejs , doesn't know asynchronous and was strongly suggesting that our whole fucking team move to React and I just suggested some topics to look to. I carried his ass once , and seems like now will have to carry it once more :(
After a few hours of trying to get Antergos installed on a SD card I decided to give up and try Ubuntu instead as it usually have better out-of-the-box compatibility. And just like that, I've got it up and running on my School computer. (bios locked, can't boot from USB but SD works for some reason).
So, I'm going to run Ubuntu from a 32GB SD Card, should I upgrade to something bigger?
Edit: I survived grub update. Phew..7
Y'know, I'm an audiophile. I want perfect sound, and that's why I want high quality headphones and audio files. I dislike speakers because the sound changes from room to room quite a lot, while it doesn't with headphones, and that would also be distracting when I'm coding. Anyway, that's not what I'm complaining about.
I really don't get it when I download music that has been given out to download for free by the author or recording label, it sometimes comes as a WAV or FLAC. I have enough space on my phone/SD card anyway so gimme lol. Sometimes, I like a song so much, I buy it but often, I never get a WAV or FLAC or anything similar to that. Only MP3 320kbps, WHICH SIMPLY ISN'T ENOUGH FOR MY AUDIOPHILE NEEDS SINCE I CAN CLEARLY HEAR THE FUCKING FREQUENCY CUTOFFS. AAC 320kbps would sound way better (WITH LESS FUCKING FILESIZE, MIND YOU) and its compatibility is also good enough to distribute it as such, but that's something that, again, only fucking free downloads sometimes use. IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE! GIVE US PROPER FILES IF WE PAY FOR YOUR GODDAMN MUSIC!23
Gotta love Linux!
Wanted to install Arch on my Rasperry PI yesterday, but don't have a cardreader on my PC. Still had an SD with a different distro (RasPlex) lying around. Popped that in, connected power and ethernet only, looked up the default SSH credentials and got to a blinking terminal on my desktop PC.
Well, how am I gonna format my microSD? Rasplex comes without fdisk, and I booted it from the only microSD slot.
Well, here we go - Extracted arch to a usb thumb drive, chrooted into it, switched microSD cards, partitioned and formatted it from the USB-Arch, installed Arch on it, chrooted from Arch to Arch (😁), set up drivers, network and ssh access, rebooted to my why-the-hell-not distro.
Was interested to learn about OpenGL and WebGL. Just found out no fucking drivers exist for my graphics card on Ubuntu.
WTF AMD !!! Atleast provide some compatibility for your product if I am purchasing it !!!8
Name a more iconic duo than web developers on help sites and having pissing contests over which modules they use instead of actually answering the question!
I've been a web dev/server admin for all of about a month now, and only known PHP for about a week of that, and the one thing really that grates on me isn't PHP's odd function naming inconsistencies or at times outright trash documentation, it's the other developers who, when asked a fairly straightforward question about why a mysqli function won't return something, demand you use PDO instead.
Please. I'm running a LEMP stack on a Raspberry Pi here, I'm trying to keep dependencies to an absolute minimum because the SD card is tiny, the Pi will catch on fire if it runs any hotter, and more dependencies are more potential points of failure. Just answer the damn question. I'm not going to install PDO for something I know I can do anyway just because it makes my code look slightly prettier.
Honourable mention to all you Node.js developers out there too, with your thousands of useless npm dependencies. I salute you.8
I think I finally found a reason to have a phone with 8GB of RAM.
So that when TWRP craps out on data decryption and decides not even to ask for a password, at least I can push a whole fucking ROM into RAM to unfuck the phone. Because why not?! Why on Earth would software work properly when you can just throw more hardware at it?
Long live FBE, TWRP what craps out on it, and you remember those things.. SD cards for data storage? I could've used an unencrypted SD card so fucking badly right now, you know... Long live soldered in storage that's encrypted, "for security". Except for when the person who owns said data actually wants to use the bloody data.
There is a possibility that I might maybe hopefully get a laptop if I help my dad with one of his own long-term projects.
If this actually happens, I don't have to run Linux of a SD card anymore :D2
In fact I'm a sinful dev, so that I can't easily decide which one is worst. From indenting with tabs, or using nano instead of vim/emacs, to hardcoding database credentials on server, to many hacks and workarounds I use as actual "fixes" when the deadline is upon me and I've tried all I could. But it always led only to my own regret. For instance, my latest sin was that I prefered Debian over Arch and used proprietary graphic drivers to speed up my new setup. But ended up with a curse from St. Ignucius. (check my last rant)
But my worst sin probably goes to when I was "printf-debugging" some issue for a GSM controller on a raspberry pi. I forgot to remove one little print line and deployed the new "fixed" version. I didn't follow that project after that for like a month or so, when the client posted back the device and said that "it just doesn't work anymore". It seemed that raspbian didn't boot beacause the sd card was curroptted. I dd'ed through the card and I noticed that there are billions of lines of "DEBUG:: reading stream from 192.some.shitty.ip", took almost all over the 32G sdcard. Just as I suddenly remembered the cursed line I just added a month ago, I declared the sd card dead with no hesitation, dunce-commented the line (so the history would remember), implemented a time out for the thread containing it, setup a journald unit for my service and removed the redirection of process output to a log file, found a new sd card and installed everything again, and finally posted back the new "fix" to the client.
Moral: Never comfort yourself for the sins you have commited in the past kids, they certainly will come back to you. And also not to do any io especially write to a file on an SD card with ext fs, in a potentially infinite loop with no timeout.
P.S: I'd posted my last rant just before the new week rant last nigh. I really liked the St. Ignucius meme so decided to create a new one. He's very adorable :)1
For the past month my phone has been unlocking really slow. I thought it was just software or the hardware starting to fail.
I finally decided to put my Professional Googling (read: Computer Science) degree to work and instantly found out it was because I had a slow 128gb SD card in it.
Removed it and everything is tip top now.1
I was trying to understand the source code of aircrack-ng which is written in C today.
Suddenly I saw sth strange !
WTF !! what is #ifdef ??? I've never seen that before !
So I told myself : hey ! You have to download a complete C programming course!
so I did , but when I skimmed through the titles , again:
WTF ! I know all of them! So why the fuck I could not fully understand the code ? Where can I find anything I missed ?
So... I'm asking U :)14

Personal project: I design and build single-board computers with old processors like Z80, 6502 etc when I'm not being too lazy. A few run CP/M. One that's been more interesting in terms of digging deeper has been an 80C188, for which I've written a BIOS (despite the chip's built-in peripherals and interrupts being at non-standard addresses) mostly in C, which it can use to boot DOS from an image file on an SD card (bit-banged off the UART chip with FatFs). (Yes it's slow, but so is a 5.25" floppy.)
Work: My first project at my current job. Not particularly exciting compared to some stuff on here, but it got me into making useful contributions to the open-source CRM we used at the time. Was building a basic extension to deal with duplicated organisation names. So learned CiviCRM fairly deeply, a bit of Drupal, a bit of PHP. It's a shame we don't use that system any more, the community was cool.7
I was wondering all day:
Can machine learning really teach a machine how to think?
I mean in a real unexpected situation that even a human may be confused , how a trained bot would react?17
I got my micro sd card stuck in the reader of my computer somehow, so now I need to essentially take apart the computer to get it back.9
In the worls of coding what matters is the algo and it's optimization
Any recommandation for proving my skills?
Thank a LOT. 😊4
My new HTC smartphone hates me.
First it started to shut down all of the sudden yesterday night, when I was solving quadratic equations on my laptop.
I thought that it might be due to low battery. So I have restarted it. After putting itself into a bootloop for 4 start sequences, it was able to fully start to the page where it told me to enter the security pin to decrypt my files. I also had 30 attempts left. Like a ransomware.
I was like "tf I didn't set anything up".
So I decided to use my first attempt as I had 30 attempts left.
I entered the pin (I can swear that it's correct) and it told me that it has to wipe the /data partition.
I did that. I pressed that button. After waiting for 30 minutes I gave up and rebooted into the bootloader.
Bootloader -> Download Mode -> wipe /data (stock rom + stock recovery btw.)
Some error with "e: mount /cache failed[...]e: mount /data failed"
So, I tried using the adb sideload - no success.
Fastbooted into RUU Mode - HTC keeps rebooting itself into the RUU Mode - no success
Tried to flash the firmware and twrp recovery from Download mode - no success
Then I tried to flash all these things from the sd card - no success
Searched for revolutionary (I know this from my old HTC sensation device).
It wasn't big of any help.
Then someone on xda recommended htcDev (htc's <b>developer-friendly</b> lol site)
I followed every step. Everything seemed to be okay.
I got to the last step.
I needed to get my encrypted token by entering "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" to be able to submit it to HTC, and after they would send me an e-Mail with an .bin file that would let me unlock the bootloader to be able to flash my way through all this headache giving fucking piece of dog shit!
But since I can't back to the phone settings to select the bootloader activation box that would let me get my token... but nah.

I wish i 48h or even more but wishing won't change anything :(9

I don’t know why, but I can literally call another Arduino and tell it to load sata from a fucking SD card but can’t show the word “MEM” on my SPI-controlled screen... what the fuck5
Seriously what's wrong with the market right now, this is basically what some job ads said. They were even from the same company
Frontend job ad: are you a rainbow rockstar developer who just loves to code OwO(unpaid overtime) [buzzwords...]
Embedded systems job ad:
Serious job description
Required experience in c/c++
Other non bs stuff8
I just tried to install Linux mint on a SD card from a live system for a friend.
I managed to break his windows partition to the point that neither Mint nor the Windows recovery tool could read it and the SD card still won't boot.
I feel like a useless piece of shit and a bad friend.
At least his data is backed up but some of his licenses (Win, Office, ...) might be lost.9

I'll give you a few reasons to walk away from a dev's chair:
1. if you want your life to be simple and not challenging, if you just want to go with the flow - choose something else. Dev's life will definitely bring some challenges to your day (and sometimes night, and sometimes - your weekends). Especially if you feel you are a perfectionist, dev life could turn your life into a living hell if not handled with care.
2. If you like to see people smiling, if you love that feeling when you help someone and that someone has a better day thanks to you - choose something else. 1st line SD would probably do, but the further from technology you go - the more smiles (and human faces overall) you'll see.
3. If you prefer person-to-person interaction over to talking to machines - definitely don't be a dev. Go to management, administration or smth else, but development. >90% of the human interaction in this field is arguments and conflicts; ~8% are requests for assistance, and the remaining 2% are shared by saying "hi" to the office administrator and your (semi|)annual reviews with your manager. Not kidding.
4. If you have a personality where you find it difficult to stand your ground and not budge to the pressure/blame game/your managers asking you to stay in late. Like it or not, it happens quite often. Many devs have spoiled the management by budging to their requests/demands to stay for OT/unpaid OT to "fix the mess they have made". That's a blame game right there. And these people stay in and do what the slaves do - work for free because they are yelled at. And then management sees this technique work and (ab|)uses it on other devs. If you can say NO and stick to it, prolly wave with some printed paragraphs of labour law in front that manager's nose - it won't be a problem. But if your consciousness is too troubling - stay away from this field of engineering.
5. If you want to easily "disconnect" from work and go do something else - dev's career might be a problem. Yes, your computer might be shut down/hibernated/suspended after 5pm until 9m the next morning, but your brain will most likely keep trying to solve the problems you were facing. You'll prolly use your own computer to do some research, check some forums, docs, etc. - this is all your free time, this is all your family time donated to your manager (and to your personal knowledge base). Not to mention, all these things you learn will soon enough become obsolete, as new technologies will replace them. So if you'd like to easily "disconnect" after 5pm, doing that as a dev might be too challenging.1
Does anyone here just wake up and feel shitty for absolutely no reason why ? When I say absolutely no reason means none whatseover from previous day etc . I wanna know if it's just me 😅4
What do you do with your billions of SD card adapters?
Is there any brand that ships micro SD cards without them?8
Not sure how to handle this one. My new company gave me a surface laptop to do dev ops work.
16 gigs of Ram but only a 256 SSD?
Nothing is installed so far except for MS office and acrobat and I am already running into memory issues.
My last work machine had 1TB HDD and 128 gigs of RAM (i know overkill but I could have several VM’s up and running at once).
What the fuck? Apparently the CTO ordered this piece of shit.
Also no mirco SD card like other models so I have no idea how this is going to fucking work.15
The display on my new RPi4 doesn't work properly. Plugged the SD card into a model 3 and everything is fine. RPi4 boots and I can SSH into it but any display I connect it to detects nothing.
Fuckin piece of shit.10
Everyone and their dog says to me, "Try Linux!"
I'm now going to give it a really good try, since I got myself some Raspberry Pi's to play with.
So, lets see, just download this file, stick it on an SD card and boot with it..
It gets so far and then stops with an error..
And there was me expecting it to 'just work' :-)57
Just in case any other devranters are in China, here is this morning's updated chart if you have wechat you can follow this account, stay safe and wash your hands5
Working at least 12 hr a day is in my daily routine.
Each minute must have an exact purpose and should not be wasted
(That is just a theory and does not mean that I actually manage to do it everyday)
not sure if this totally classifies as a rant, but here goes:
so my Pi is giving a lot of problems. can't install software, keep getting weird error messages. so I try DD a new image onto the card. does not work at all. tried on three different machines :D
next I try run rm -rf /
it's obviously totally fucked. nothing works. pull the plug and plug it in again to see what happens.... it boots up again :D all the commands are back. no files are gone.
and that's when I was like fuck this and I returned the sd card :D2
Samsung has a bug in their galaxy software that essentially makes you unable to store anything that's not in the root folder on an additional sd card. After 2 years, they still have the bug. Additionally some phones will shit themselves if you try to format an sd card with it
How the fuck can they just leave significant bugs. The whole just get a new phone every other year mentality/industry style is both wasteful and seems to contribute to garbage software7
If you have clumsy people around you, your belongings are never safe.
I left the laptop on the table for just a few hours, and this is what I returned to. Someone carelessly moved the laptop to the right without paying attention to the USB stick, so it bent from the table to the right with a higher position.
Indeed, lack of protrusion is the main reason SD cards are better than USB sticks, and why laptops should have full-sized SD card slots, and why external SD card readers are no valid replacement for built-in SD card slots. Relying on an external SD card reader outright defeats the primary benefit of SD cards, lack of protrusion.
One can be careful with ones belongings every day and have them last a long time, but then someone else comes and ruins it for you. Years of effort with being careful have been wasted. Clumsy people will certainly find new creative ways to break your stuff.10
//Another 3D printer rant
So as many know im student.
And i have been 3D printing for years now.
And like 2 months ago i have decided to buy 3D touch (BLTouch shit clone).
BLTouch is like 40-50$
and 3D touch is 15$.
Yes its a clone but from what i heard the accuracy is not that bad really.
I plug it in and try the accuracy test in marlin.
Standard deviation of 0.25mm
That is 1 freaking fucking layer.
Heck 0.05mm more then 1 layer.
So i read how it works.
OK its not that complicated.
Basically a hall sensor.
So i unscrewed the sensor and magnetized the screw and probe.
I put it together again but now with only 0.6mm gap between the screw and the top of the sensor. (Before it was really deep in there).
I try the accuracy test again. (Yes i have run the tests multiple times and got an average of them in the past tests and future tests too).
Still horrible but better.
So i go around internet and i find one guy saying turn on debugging in marlin.
OK i mean i might just as well.
That is better then some old original BLTouch probes.
I hope to get BLTouch v3.1 in future but this will do for now i guess.
So would i recommed the shit cheap clones ?
They are unrealible pieces of shit and you have to spend hours upon hours to make them work properly and even then they wont get to the accuracy of new BLTouch.
Yes there is also the point that Z motor isnt really perfect either and 1/16 micro stepping is also shit and you cant go that precise.
Oh and while typing this the fucking shit probe decided it would be a great idea to fail and failed.
Resoulting in a deep hole in my printing bed.
So if you think the 15$ is a great value NO.
DONT BUY THE CLONE.
I have learnt my lesson.9
systemd is like: this service/process is throwing warning during boot, so let's wait 120 million seconds and hope the warning magically goes away because fuck you user who wants to get to his desktop. what's why!3
So, uh... Linux 3DS is going well. It finally boots, turns out it's the SD/MMC driver's issue, not my 3DS dying (phew), but now I have to actually FIX the driver. I thought I fixed it, but no, no, I just entirely broke it so now it doesn't even attempt to load. Fuck me... (These changes are local for now.)
Anyone wanna help?
So I was trying to root my Xperia Z2, starting by unlocking the bootloader. I rushed through the confirmation boxes to get the code, I entered it on fastboot... And realized I haven't made a backup. Phone restored to factory state. At least I had saved my photos on the SD card, but all the files, settings, configs and apps were gone along with my IM conversation database that I hadn't backed up for a month.
And I still haven't finished rooting that device.1
tfw 256MB isn't enough RAM to load a zImage from SD, decompress it elsewhere, then boot Linux on a 3DS. OOM panic when trying to init a null wlan driver.
so close yet so very fucking far2
> 1 year into project in React.js with a 10+ members in team
> PM panics over last Apache statement
> PM: "fuck, rewrite it in Angular 4 : /"1
Well... I recorded my boss's talk at a small tech conference. Everything went just fine until I tried downloading the video from my camera.
It turns out under-priced 32 GB SD cards from eBay may actually only contain 256 MB worth of memory, while quite happily accepting recordings that are far larger than that.4
1.Working on a repo's 20 day old version without pulling the changes first
2. Then blaming me to not tell him
3. Ultimately sending me a see screenshot of his code to incorporate in my code ( which he himself didn't write, but asked a coworker to do it)
WTF DUDE. Atleast you could have realised your mistake and not blamed me for it
While sorting through my downloads folder, I noticed the file size for the Atom setup program: 138MB. For a text editor, that's pretty ridiculous and makes its name quite ironic.
I have similar disdain for Piskel (pixel graphics editor) and Etcher (USB/SD card image writer). Though these are all useful programs, none of these ought to be anywhere near the sizes they are.
Meanwhile, Notepad++ weighs 3MB which is a lot more reasonable.
What the hell is WRONG with Windows 10. Why does it need so much storage space? I get to only use 219+38.6+13.8 GiB and Windows gets to use 564 GiB of data to piggyback on data and storage space to push nonsense updates to user who do not want them. Use your own fucking servers, MS. I wish this fucking OS burns in hell.10
Google's attempts to follow the iPhone just make me think, "Might as well get an iPhone."
I wish Google would create a high-end phone with grippy, durable case, replaceable two-day battery and SD card slot. Vanilla Android with latest updates. Bring it in at a reasonable price (which I'd hope would be possible if not trying to squeeze everything).
Given me a real alternative here. Don't try and lead with design. It's letting Apple choose the battlefield.7
Didn't even ask for 2 sets, the devRant team is just awesome! Thanks!
On and @localhost, it seems like people are sending their setup, so here's my student one :)1
I was wondering !
As a computer geek I would like to know everything from mathematics to programming , robotics and machine learning but as I go , new technologies appear and it's
just like an endless while loop!
I don't mean I wanna stop learning new things but just looking for a more effitient way for doing this!
Any idea about this?1
it would help if i had time to learn even a little more C, as I'm bumbling my way through the Linux kernel and GodMode9 (an amazingly powerful 3DS manip tool for everything from the SD card to the NAND to literally raw FIRM0/FIRM1 bootloader access) to try amd patch some code from GM9 into the kernel to handle the SD card *properly* so Linux 3DS doesn't constantly hang when reading/writing to the SD card, to enable Wi-Fi access (same bus location and similar bus structure as SD/NAND access, different processor,) enable NAND decryption and access (yes, really, NAND is encrypted via software, which is... ...fun...) and more.
tl;dr: the 3DS hardware, C, and others' code collectively make me wanna slit my fucking wrists. Hopefully my sacrifice allows higher-level programming languages to be visble for low-level jobs in the future.4
When you know your product sucks and even you won't support it. Too bad for those two windows phone users left in the world.
Working on a Project. Forced to use xaml I hate xaml. C# is so much more efficient/ easier. Now at least I have an excuse
After 4 - 5 months of learning webD, I am trying to build my first fullstack web application (simple chat one ).
My stack :
Vue.js + Materialize
Express ( handling routes )
Mongoose/MongoDB ( Database )
Socket.io ( web sockets for real time connection )
Had dreamt of this 2 months ago where I built a basic front end using html and css, and now porting it to Vue is like a breeze.
Wish me luck and let's hope it doesnot become one of the unfinished projects. ( My university semester exams are coming up , would have to complete this as fast as possible ). I am also learning DSA + STL and aim to learn basic python syntax before holidays so that I can focus my time on ML during them. It's so fucking overloaded that I have my doubts ::((4
Now... I understand 2FA is to make things more secure, and I do appreciate it. BUT can we please work out a damn solution for people who work in an agency for other corporates which only have one shared account across the agency that bundles one phone number or mobile app.
What if people are on leave or sick? I need stupid 2FA to be able to login/work. uhhhhhhh.....10
And this is how it starts. I bought a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, quite some time ago. Plain board, just the board and a case. Why? Well, I have no idea. I always wanted one for some reason... and finally got one.
I got a good sd card for it, and flashed raspbian and... now what? What should I do with this?
*Looks up "Cool RPi projects"*
*Nah, I already have a NAS... No, wouldn't really use a media center... play games?*
*Well, let me just install sshd and come back to it later.*
Today, I run pi-hole, jekyll, node, gitd, a ton of other things that ends with d... I am even considering buying an extra one (maybe two).
Now I'm really afraid of what would happen if I give in to the urge of buying sensors and add-on boards.2
Damn MacBook can't read my SD card... Damn work notebook can't read my SD card... Private notebook also couldn't read the fucking SD card and additionally the fucking microSD-to-SD adapter is molten now... I guess this is mnot my day... *aaargh*5
Learning rust with a very tight deadline. Not something I'd recommend since you will be likely to spend more time trying to get your project to compile than getting on with your project.
In my case the project was a compiler(in hindsight I'd have picked ocaml or scala instead).4
Besides firefox and emacs there is also Linux, the library emacs uses to interact with the computer hardware
Suggestion for a cheap, leightweight Laptop?
As I want to code outside, the screen should be bright, SD Card Slot would also be nice.
I actually wanted to buy a MacBook, but the prices are...8
My personal top 4:
time with gf,
time with friends,
Just clears my head, but doing any of my other hobbies can really help because it just gets me in a different headspace
!rant :) FUUUUUUUUDGE YEAAAAH!
it's so satisfying when you've been working on a huge ass thing(when maybe you should have tested individual parts) and it just fucking works as intended amazing, I love it!
It's so beautiful to see your own compiler(jk just scanner+parser atm) compile code successfully
Any Windows Sysadmins here? I have a question for you - How do you do it?
I only very rarely have to do something that would fall under "Windows System Administration", but when I do... I usually find something either completely baffling, or something that makes me want to tear our my hair.
This time, I had a simple issue - Sis brought me her tablet laptop (You know, the kind of tablets that come with a bluetooth keyboard and so can "technically" be called a laptop) and an SD card stating that it doesn't work.
Plugging it in, it did work, only issue was that the card contained file from a different machine, and so all the ACLs were wrong.
I... Dealt with Windows ACLs before, so I went right to the usual combination of takeown and icacls to give the new system's user rights to work with the files already present. Takeown worked fine... But icacls? It got stuck on the first error it encountered and didn't go any further - very annoying.
The issue was a found.000 folder (Something like lost+found folder from linux?) that was hidden by default, so I didn't spot it in the explorer.
Trying to take ownership of that folder... Worked for for files in there, safe for one - found.000\dir0000.chk$Txf; no idea what it is, and frankly neither do I care really.
Now... Me, coming from the Linux ecosystem, bang my head hard against the table whenever I get "Permission denied" as an administrator on the machine.
Most of the times... While doing something not very typical like... Rooting around (Hah... rooting... Get it?! I... Carry on) the Windows folder or system folders elsewhere. I can so-so understand why even administrators don't have access to those files.
But here, it was what I would consider a "common" situation, yet I was still told that my permissions were not high enough.
Seeing that it was my sister's PC, I didn't want to install anything that would let me gain system level permissions... So I got to writing a little forloop to skip the one hidden folder alltogether... That solved the problem.
My question is - Wtf? Why? How do you guys do this sort of stuff daily? I am so used to working as root and seeing no permission denied that situations like these make me loose my cool too fast too often...
Also - What would be the "optimal" way to go about this issue, aside for the forloop method?
The exact two commands I used and expected to work were:
takeown /F * /U user /S machine-name /R
icacls * /grant machine-name\user:F /T7
After working with a coworker on some odd issues, I finally decided to check on the actual ticket he needed assistance with.
From now on, we will optimize our HTML for aesthetic appeal in Chrome's dev tools. display:none is verboten.
Sometimes I wonder if I've had a stroke or if I've died and am in purgatory.
>Raspberry Pi on 16GB SD card
>Plugs in 2 flash drives for space, one 8GB and one 32GB
>8GB is allocated entirely for swap
>32GB is separated into 3 partitions and /etc/fstab edited to mount them on /home, /opt and /usr
>Moves files to the proper partitions on stick
>Kernel panic on boot before keyboard is enabled, kernel panic data taller than screen
>No R/W FS for kernel to dump to
fuck my life4
I fucking love my SD card reader driver fucking up my whole system. How did that driver even pass BayHub's fucking QA, causing a bluescreen of death right during reboot of Windows? Anyways thanks Microsoft for that nice new bluescreen not telling me anything about the fucking problem why Windows just crashed. But at least it looks nice, so that it's more fun working all night and half a day to find the fucking problem myself. Fuck this.1
I just got my third 128GB MicroSD card off Amazon, this time SanDisk. Yet again, trying to do anything not involving the OEM full-disk exFAT partition staying intact (which, fuck that, all that uses that is Windows and Linux, i'm looking for splitting this thicc bih up) shifts EVERYTHING, including MBR+PT/GPT down the disk by 16MB exactly inserting data from... the atmosphere? whatever's using it? ...do SD cards have that secure key/DRM store space thing still?
(EDIT: I do verify that they ARE genuinely the right size after purchasing before reformatting or repartitioning, by the way.)
First it was a Silicon Power card, then a Samsung card, now a SanDisk.
(Also, why all S?)
Luckily, this time it wasn't a pain in the ass to get it to read as anything but "Bad Card" or a 0-byte/empty/non-existent device in Windows/Linux (respectively) so I was able to see that it was indeed the same issue without taking 3 days to jump through device hoops to finally get it to do it again but in such a way that it shifts out and back in all zeroes.2
Emacs, once you gotten familiar it's just the best and there's lots of packages to make everything easy to do from emacs. Also it's very configurable1
Okay so for all of you who think that you can't do shit without stackoverflow. I'll tell you this, fuck SO. There's this ancient technique of programmers of old probably just about 20-25 years ago called RTFM. Why bother copy pasting some one else's spaghetti(that you might not fully understand) when you can write your own better code! (said in good faith). When something is behaving strange or you don't know what something requires just hit the docs or manual and read about the api because it is describes not only what it wants and needs but also what it does. So try this because it might have more information that you need than stack overflow might tell you12
Just fixed my broken htc one m9 (boot loop after legitimate update) by powering it up month after putting in back to box for future repair. Who to blame? NSA? Android 7? SD Card?
Is this question still really that important?
Even when I update my Pis that have 32GB SD cards, I can spare the 12kb update.10
Jesus fucking christ.
I posted two rants today, both about trying to get my SD card reader to work on my arduino due...
After spending my whole day debugging, rewriting my code multiple times, cutting off anything that wasn't strictly necessary, writing my code procedurally, I finally decided to go and see what the library I HAVE to use is doing under the hood.
uint_fast8_t is NOT 8 bits wide on my due...
The bitshifts were "overflowing" (not really, just taking more space, which it had access to) meaning that my data was getting corrupt.
FUCK YOU FOR TAKING A DAY OFF MY LIFE3
For the love of fuck, my sd card had a ridiculously large amount of space, but I can't just download apps to it, the best I can do is download to my space-limited phone and then "move to sd card" which doesn't help if the app is bigger than the space I have on my phone and because it doesn't move the while app, just a couple files, stupid fucking fuck1
Yo, so does anyone here have any experience about using Windows or mac printer drivers on GNU+Linux? So far my strategy has been to try to extract a ppd file from the Windows/mac drivers. It's an epilog fusion laser printer/engraver5
More network/hardware than dev but anyway: I use OPNsense as a firewall at home on an embedded system. Had everything set up nicely and appearing to be working fine, quite a lot of things set up (static leases, VLANs with various firewall rules etc. - a fair bit of stuff involved). I noticed my remote system was failing to back up to my local one. Turned out port forwarding wasn't fully working (initial packet got through but nothing else). I noticed this at midnight.
Ran an update to see if that helped - nope. Reboot time then! It made its shutdown noises and I waited 15 minutes before giving up (no noises, no ping response). Took SD card out. Copied a fresh install onto it, thus wiping all settings. Booted up fine, set up my internet connection, all good. Proceeded to configure it. Noticed I couldn't access the internet from my PC, but could from the firewall itself. Rebooted the firewall. It didn't come back up. Argh!
Reinstalled AGAIN. Attached a serial cable and it was complaining about something which sounded like it couldn't read the SD card. Tried another. Nope. Looked online (using phone): known issue to do with boot delays.
Gave up and went to bed at this point (4am).
Next day: Installed it in a VM instead. Still no internet from my PC! Another known issue to do with default gateway not being the PPPoE interface. Got into shell, manually changed the default route. Was then able to update to the latest version which fixes the gateway issue. Rebooted the VM. All good.
Put all my settings back in, this time taking a backup afterward.
Only to discover....
....port forwarding wasn't working properly. Back to square 1.
Poked around with some NAT settings (outbound ones), made no difference, undid those changes and suddenly it started working.
WTF? /waves arms in the air
OPNsense folk were very helpful, producing a new build for me to try within a couple of hours of me asking about the problem.
But days like that, I start to question whether I really enjoy technology as much as I thought I did...
While addressing a Senior Dev's (SD) query from another team.
SD: why is this field mandatory? Can't it be just optional? Any other work around?
Me: Is your code changes already pushed in Devo? In that case, we provide a value which will work since you are not concerned about it.
SD: Yes. It's pushed till production. And, I want to test changes in Prod.
Me: (shared some codes) and explained that this feature for testing is only available in Devo.
SD: I know that. (Shared me a ticket) I want this field to be optional. That's it.
Me: (read the entire ticket. Didn't find anything related their) Told him, I will discuss with team. And meanwhile, for Devo, you can use this value.
Next morning, I accidentally came over some other ticket raised by him only which had the correct doubts regarding request to support this field in production
Now, I don't know why did he share a wrong ticket with me.
And, how will it even help him if that field was even optional.
THAT JUST WONT WORK IN PRODUCTION.
I will discuss with my team and see what can happen.
FUCK MY LIFE WHY CANT A RASPI BOOT FROM USB??! I'VE BEEN WORKING ON A PROJECT FOR IT FOR THE LAST WEEK, SPENT NIGHTS LEARNING ELECTRONIC BASICS AND GUESS WHAT? THAT FUCKING RASPIAN ON MY MICRO SD CARD IS NOT BOOTING. AND I CANT REINSTALL IT BECAUSE I HAVENT GOT AN FUCKING ADAPTER FOR THIS SHIT. I HAVENT BEEN USING A MICRO SD FOR YEARS.
AND NOW I CANT TEST MY PROGRAM BECAUSE I NEED THE RASPIS GPIO PINS :(6
Blindly copy pasted and executed commands from tutorial.
Just because it was faster to reformat sd card in the worst case ( raspberry pi ) than figure out what each one did.3
Please be gentle, first rant. :)
Can you please provide me with literature recommendations:
1. Books about software architeccture, design patterns and best practices in general.
2. "Relaxation" books related to developer's life experiences, something like "The Phoenix Project" (https://amazon.com/Phoenix-Project-...). I really enjoyed that. :)
I am aware that this is not best use of rants, but I would really like to hear this community recommendations. Thanks in advance. :)9
What programming language did you study in high school? In my country they teach us Pascal for what ever reason, me coming from c++ I can t support it17
I am that dumb, my linux wasn't able to show me the sd card in file manager so i can merge NOOBS .
I got mad so i asked my friend if i can use his windows laptop to put NOOBS on the sd
But guess what , my phone reads sd cards aswell 😂😂
I just downloaded from my phone, copy and pasted
Took me about 1 day to realize5
Yet another problem, ho ho ho.. :-)
Got myself some new Samsung EVO 32Gb microSDHC UH-1 cards.
But this Raspberry PI 3B+ doesn't boot with them..
I just get a blank screen and nothing else.
Take the SD card out and bung in the old card, it works fine..
What's up ?
Googling a bit so far I find others with the same problem, but no answers..
Someone suggested it could be the PSU.
As the old SD card is 8Gb and the newer one 32Gb, I guess it could need a lot more power..
After all, both PSU's are cheap ones..
So, buy a Raspberry PI official PSU and then if its still a blank screen come back here.. ?
Meanwhile, what else could it be ?
SD card works fine in PC via an adapter..
FX [ Times Passes . . . ]
Well, got it working now !
Not that google was any help on the matter !
What I did was:
Put the micro SD card into the larger SD adapter, plugged that into my old SD to USB adapter.
Then formatted the SD card.
Then wrote the Raspberry Pi OS image to the card.
That worked !
Why did it work ?
Was it because I formatted the card ?
Was it because I put it in the SD card adapter before putting it in the USB adapter ?
Was it both ?
A new $3 micro SD card reading USB adapter is on its way for me to find out perhaps..
What a complete pain to get working !
And on one else was any use I had to figure out the solution myself !
End of RANT..2
After 3 weekends of headaches I finally managed to get the SD card reader to work.
Now, to understand fat...
A whole different story.5
Trying to get my SPI SD card reader to work with hwlib...
I can't get the fucking library to do what I want...
(I have to use it, it's a requirement for the project)
There goes my fucking weekend...
What's that? You committed the tmp/dist/cache field for something only YOU run locally and asked me to review it. Just GET OUT.1
When you accidentally send a screenshot of a chat to the person him/herself. Lot of shitload to get out off .. FYI I blocked the person. Would have to deal with it 1.5 months later when I actually meet her after vacations. I need luck :(
And my server just arrived (Christmas present for myself)
And well first of all i would guess it would be louder but actually pretty quiet. I mean you can hear it but its not loud.
I mean you can probably guess what OS it is going to run since its me. (Yeah Arch) and will be used mainly for compiling.
Space is a little issue but i can figure that one out surely.
I dont have any drives for it yet (Still waiting for SSD to arrive) and one nice feature is internal SD card that you can actually boot from. Never saw this before but its nice to have. Arch fits just fine. Doing memtest now to see if memory is all fine since i got SQUASHFS errors when i tried to wipe the SD card inside arch.
Well wish me luck.24
Devrant works surprisingly well here in China, except for saving pictures everything else works(mostly) but it's still nice to be able to use it here
Anyone else have similar experience in their country?11
Second Rant incoming!
I have a Elephone p9000 (China Smartphone). Great Value for it's price if you don't mind a shit camera.
Also, this is actually my second model! I cracked my screen and tried to replace it. Somehow I managed ti puncture the battery and nearly set my house on fire but that is another story.
This rant is about how the sd/sim-card read is FAILING ME! Everytime I call someone, my sim-card ejects spontaneously, thus ending the call. It's so goddamn annoying having to recall the same person every two minutes...
I tried inserting the sim-card in the other slot because it has dual sim but nothing changed...guess I need a new Phone. FML3
So I have a semi big project ongoing:
Because my modem+router combo sucks dick and gets buttfucked to much I want to make my own Router with PPPoE.
So I ordered an 8 euro used switch, 24ports for management, but our IP TV provider is sucking cock too! He uses multicasting to send the fucking IP TV signal. So the switch is not VLan ready and so the network will be flodded.
But that's not the worst...
I don't know how to route VOIP over QoS correctly... So I just hope that part work's!
I also ordered another network switch Wich is manageable + an God damn networking closet. 80 bucks gone again! Wish me luck this works better...
BUT THATS NOT THE WORST BECAUSE NOW COMES THE HEAVY PART!
I wanted to use my old AMD Athlon X2 64bit and 4 gigs of RAM PC to be my powerhouse of the router. I plugged it into the wall, booted, screen error... Thought it might be the integrated graphics card... Unplugged my old one, inserted it.... AND IT WOR... NOPE NOPE IT DIDN'T NOW MY DAMN MOTHERBOARD IS FUCKING FRIED TO DUST BECAUSE OF THE GOD DAMN ... I DONT EVEN KNOW! AAAAA
So I thought I could temporarily use my raspberry pi one model b, a good fellow with multiple years of usage! I plugged in the sd card into my girls laptop, wasn't at home, and her God damn internet downloaded that shitty raspbian (sorry raspi but your servers sometimes are very slow) and after the download I realized her GOD DAMN SD READER DIDNT FUCKING WORK!!!
SO I GUESS I WILL WAIT!1
Have 4 GB micro SD card for my filesystem project.
Every search I do on the hex dump takes 5 minutes (literally)
Exported hex dump to text
Now have 2 9GB text files
Gonna try to import it into mysql for faster querying, wish me luck3
I just finished my second semester of computer programming. I then say to myself : "Let's use my new knowledge to make the program I worked on for fun two years ago better and more efficient!".
It was a bad idea.
After falling down the Manjaro hole for months I yesterday decided to leave Manjaro for Pop!_OS. I lose a bit of performance and battery life, I gain a ton of UI polish, I gain a lot of package support, and I lose some hard earned nerd points.
My NAS has an easy to install Debian tool for file sync. I can use Etcher for making bootable USB/SD for my raspberry pi. Firefox is the default browser and I can use all my plugins and password manager out of the box. Apt is easier to use than pacman. Easier Python development setup. Docs are more often written for Debian. (For some reason I spent hours trying to get powerline and oh-my-zsh working right in manjaro’s xfce terminal before giving up.)
either my DietPi setup (PAM in particular) got traumatized by me going away for a weekend and started lisping, or I need a new SD card.
I have to deploy our software onto multiple raspberry pi so I started cloning an SD card with DD....devRant time I guess
I've always been a strong critic of the mac operating system and apple in general for they're overpriced products. few months back my old laptop kicked the bucket and repairing it was not an option as i was sick of charging the laptop after every 3-4 hours and had to purchase a new laptop immediately. loooking at my options around 50k rs or 700$ all windows laptops available in indian markets sucked (except for lenovo 320s) so i made the shift to macbook air 2017.my daily work involves photoshop illustrator and a dash of premiere pro. I also work on nodeJS and python using the pycharm and atom IDEs. After using it for a month i feel in love with mac platform and macos. Its a wonderful experience. gone are the days of crashes and the windows updates (ugh). the boot of the laptop is like magic and softwares like wmware imovie and notes keynote are f**king awesome. Long hours of work have become fun rather than hell dealing with constant windows gimmicks and bad battery optimisation on linux.
An explanation why all developers (except for the ones who require high powered gpus) graphic designers should shift to macos rn.
Advantages of using mac
No forced updates update whenever now or a f'ing month later no probs.
better battery optimisation than linux
no more installing os again and again (ubuntu)
better vm than virtualbox (vmware)
terminal for running bash commands
trackpad is worlds better than the best windows trackpad
some softwares not available for macos
storage is generally less on macbooks
UI is simple (less elaborated than windows)
get a vm and install linux(vmware fusion 8)
ps. u may not need it though
wine and wine bottler for using windows apps
get a microsd to sd adapter for macbook and expand storage5
I'm looking at replacing my Moto 360 gen 2 because I've given up hope of the gen 3 (even if I know things that I'm not allowed to share) and I'm looking at the ticwatch c2 but can't find any CPU comparisons between the SD 400 and SDW 2100...
I know the 2100 is essentially the 400 on a smaller manufacturing process but still...3
Why the fuck do SD cards always land on the floor dark-side up?! It's so fucking frustrating to find them!!7
Is learning VIM worth it?
I have some (probably unjustified) prejudices to it - I find it rather visually unattractive. But it seems to me also that it boosts productivity.
So do you recommend it and what is least painful way to learn it?5
"feel free to choose which ever size pixel you prefer because you get the same great experience on both we don't set aside better features for the larger device"
Every time I check my old codes i start insulting my self..... How the fuck was i that stupid..... Still Stupid tho but i m progressing :D
I m learning to code by myself without any instructor :').... I wanna use unreal engine but i forgot how to code with cpp since i m only using C# now.. made winform apps and installing xamarin to learn about cross platform devloppment :)1
Rust is a nice language but the learning curve is quit steep so if you don't have time to pick it up I'd suggest using another language especially for assignments if they give you the choice. Otherwise you might like me and my classmates spend more time fighting the rust compiler than doing the assignment7
Complaints about how FE rendering is so slow when BE apis take forever to return. Working on performance projects and feel like you've done nothing at all at the end of each day.2
Could you please recommend me some (free if possible) sites for SW skill assessment (for example: sites with quizzes, problems, exams etc.)?
Anyone tried converting speech waveforms to some type of image and then using those as training data for a stable diffusion model?
Hypothetically it should generate "ultrarealistic" waveforms for phonemes, for any given style of voice. The training labels are naturally the words or phonemes themselves, in text format (well, embedding vectors fwiw)
After that it's a matter of testing text-to-image, which should generate the relevant phonemes as images of waveforms (or your given visual representation, however you choose to pack it)
I would have tried this myself but I only have 3gb vram.
Even rudimentary voice generation that produces recognizable words from text input, would be interesting to see implemented and maybe a first for SD.
In other news:
Implementing SQL for an identity explorer. Basically the system generates sets of values for given known identities, and stores the formulas as strings, along with the values.
For any given value test set we can then cross reference to look up equivalent identities. And then we can test if these same identities hold for other test sets of actual variable values. If not, the identity string cam be removed, or gophered elsewhere in the database for further exploration and experimentation.
I'm hoping by doing this, I can somewhat automate the process of finding identities, instead of relying on logs and using the OS built-in text search for test value (which I can then look up in the files that show up, and cross reference the logged equations that produced those values), which I use to find new identities.
I was even considering processing the logs of equations and identities as some form of training data perhaps for a ML system that generates plausible new identities but that's a little outside my reach I think.
Finally, now that I know the new modular function converts semiprimes into numbers with larger factor trees, I'm thinking of writing a visual browser that maps the connections from factor tree to factor tree, making them expandable and collapsible, andallowong adjusting the formula and regenerating trees on the fly.7
Why the fuck does a freaking SD card reader for arduino needs a 3v and a 5v pin...... I have no space in my project and no experience at all to handle this.... and no fucking place for batteries....
Why is every of my project like this ..... cry12
As if the day could not be worst.
I've a delay with an app for a school project, my stomach hurts like hell, I'm sleepy, my phone's SD card fucked up.
At least I still have some soda left, though2
It's 2022 and people still believe USB sticks and external card readers are a replacement for memory card slots.
They're not. SD cards have a standardized form factor and do not protrude from memory card slots, but external card readers and USB sticks do.
Just like smartphones, laptops are increasingly ditching the SD card slot or replacing it with microSD, which has less capacity, lower life expectancy and data retention span due to smaller memory transistors, worse handling, and no write-protection switch.
Not only should full-sized SD cards be brought back to laptops, but also brought to smartphones. There might soon be 2 TB SD cards, meaning not one second of worrying about running out of space for years. That would be wonderful.22
My setup, seeing that people are posting theirs.
+ BenQ 22" monitor
+ Custom-built PC
+ Fried i7 motherboard :(
+ Working i3 motherboard
+ 2 Green fans (top, back)
+ 2 Red fans (front)

+ 2G WD hard drive (not SSD :( )
+ 4-port USB 3.0 hub
+ SD card reader (with 3 more storage devices it can read)
+ HP DeskJet Ink Advantage
+ Horrible mechanical keyboard
+ Special keys (music player, play/pause, next/prev, etc.)
+ Mouse that doesn't stop glowing
+ Awesome speakers

I've got Linux 3DS working now, but I have a size limit of 60MB for my zImage. Is there a way to mount a file via loop as, say, the root directory, so the image in RAM is unloaded and it executes from SD/NAND? If not, anything similar?1
Any tips for doing well on the technical interview?
It's my first time doing a technical interview so any tips are welcome. It is for a (paid) field application engineering internship. They said it would mostly be regarding electronics11
So I wasted about 20 minutes yesterday because I forgot to look where I was plugging in my SD card...
I use a mid-2011 model iMac (with the CD and SD ports on the side), so, thinking I knew where the correct slot was, I attempted to put my SD card into the computer. Oh the adrenaline rush when I realized that the SD card didn't normally go all the way in...
So then I spent the next 20 minutes finding and poking various tools into the CD drive in order to fish out my 32 gig SD. Eventually I just ended up using two bent paperclips, but man, was that an adventure.
So, I have a Raspberry Pi and I have no idea what to do with it. Any suggestions? I already have a SD Card with retropie.18
It really bugs me out when your co workers start working on a project without telling you. Makes me feel undervalued. I would not complete their sloppy seconds this time for sure
Started my very first (summer) job as an IT agent in customer service for my city less than two weeks ago and finally moving out from the formations to answer the phone alone.
I must've listened to around 30 calls and already there's stories I could make tales of.
I now understand the job of customer service.
How do you know that you are stuck in a job without longterm perspective (besides some undefined gut feeling)?
And what to do then? It seems to me, only possible action is to change job. Is there any, less extreme, alternative?
Yesterday was "but you are Russian" day. It was somehow decided by people in my office, that Russians are the fixers. Basically its the regular flow: Fix the wifi, install me a Windows, Fix VM image, fix my sd card coz its fucked up, I have issues with my hotspot, air conditioner is not cooling enough. But whats weird... Those people are fucking developers themselves!! Wtf?! I got a call from US team (I'm in Israel) and they wanted me to fix their laptop over the phone!!!!!! FUCK!!😕
Restarted my ZFS NAS today which last time corrupted one drive because of this changing /dev/sd? stuff. Now replaced them by IDs and rebooted. Enough adrenaline for today.
Can't download YouTube videos (disk read/write error) caused by another corrupted 1-year old SD card. Sucks when manufacturers/vendors don't include the chip's lifespan2
I hate Linux from the bottom of my heart.
I have a SLR camera. After a few shooting sessions I inserted my SD card into my Arch Linux machine. For some mysterious reason it wouldn't ever umount, saying target was busy (nothing opened on it btw). So I just removed my SD card and, alas: all of my photos are gone.
Anyone knows how to fix it?9
It's been a few months I became a freelancer, the cool thing is I still have no sleep but this time it's not for deadlines! ... XD
It's for ...
You complete the rant !2
Let's start from the beginning: I finally got my 3 odroid MC1 Solo's (XU4 equivalent, and they are way more powerful than a pi) and I was really excited to set them up. I decided to start with resinOS as I had heard about it and wanted to try it out. It didn't boot. I foashee every single SD card like five friggin times, and it didn't boot.
So I decided to try Ubuntu 18 minimal. It didn't boot, I was depressed. Then today I turned it on again, silly me forgot that I would need to reboot after expanding the file system. AND NOW I'M IN! DOCKER SWARM, HERE I COME!!!!!!3
Being a university student who is about to complete his first year, is being a google certified mobile web specialist worth it?? ( More about my background : I have been into front end developement for around 4 months and this has been my first exposure to " production level coding ". I have been improving my JS skills and am currently learning Vue. I have a fair understanding of backend and am trying to build a full stack app using express, Vue and sockets . I have an interest in algorithms , dsa and machine learning although I an not able to devote my full time on it but hopefully would be able to do it in 2 to 3 months. I also have an interest in Linux and all. ). Please suggest something . Thanks in advance.
PS : I know my interests are very random , but I am just exploring my options and being a freshman , I am confused A lot . So trying to figure out something that will help me in future too4
I just made the switch from Windows to MacOS.
After a couple of days working i couldnt believe how efficent ive become!
Even though i am pissed that there is no SD-Card reader.
My dad showed me vb.net when I was 13 or something and just went ahead to try to make different types of games with Windows forms, it was a lot of fun even if the games were garbage(I had a gazillion buttons on one because I couldn't figure out how to make the logic reusable with the hp bar); it is what put me on the programmer/engineering path1
I forget pendrive at uni with my data for master paper and there are two possibilities I put it in mg lab coat or throw to backpack which has fucking hole and I lost it on my way. It takes me 40min to get to uni so I don't want to risk spendindg extra 1,5 hour to come back to home take another mobile drive and go to uni (if it isnt in my coat). I don't have second pendrive so I use my phone's sd card and want to drop my copying script on it to collect data. Something goes wrong and I cant read sd card anymore (ask for format). I had pendrive in coat so I could copy everything but on my sd card was important photos for paper. No backup ofc. I hope I could get some back somehow...
I feel like I am cloent for myself and salesman in one
What's in your opinion the best way to back up/clone video files from an sd card on to 3 external usb harddisks, simultaneously?
I have to assist in a video shoot and I don't see doing this back up work manually.4
!rant very happy to see a development at my uni towards having programming(+related courses) being more and more examined throughout the course through assignments and seminars where you have to explain what you did and why. I think this is a much more suitable solution for some courses best done with practise than having a paper based exam.3
I spent the last 1.5 hours trying to optimize delivery of two 8.0KB JS files. It didn't work, at all tried like everything I could find. At the end I initialized it in angular json and made it load regardless. Made me realize that it is not made for optimization.1
How do you know ML and AI has gone too far? You rely on the algorithm instead of the obvious.
Google will translate comments, etc. At times when you click on an English video to language around your location. This is so obvious, if I didn't understand English if would not have clicked on the video!!
My non-tech cousin just asked me if he can use the second SIM slot in his phone as a slot for inserting a SD card since he doesn't have a second SIM and the phone does not have a memory card slot. I said yes 😂😝7
my phone is dying. Very slowly, i see the first signs of decay, i probably have months or even more than a year, but it will die on me. I knew it will happen.
I currently have an asus phone (ZE552KL), it is technically DualSim or SD-Card, has a camera that is..badish and sometimes the bluetooth wont start and then it reboots. Also the camera has a pure software bug where it isnt able to ever focus properly, but with tricks you can get it to work again. The asus forums constantly refer to sending it to a repair station (wherever one is in germoney). That annoys me.
Back to dying. For now its definetly the battery.
I remember when you could change the battery on a whim. Great times. My last phone died duo battery aswell (well, the gps module broke aswell so it wasnt all flowers besides the battery).
My current asus phone was something around 300 € and according to reviews 2 years ago it has a good bang for the buck ratio.
I havent looked into the market, just a cursory glance. But apparently if you want a phone that has a decent battery life, is not basically a tablet, has an sd card slot and a camera that is not total rubbish it gets hard. Its hard to balance those things, and if you want a swappeable battery all hope is lost.
Further i have started to misstrust chinese phones, the asus software support is wacky and some stuff is weird. I suspect its as bad with huwai and all the others. Also its apparently kinda hard to get any resemblance of quality in accessoires for non-mainstream brands (i mean cases and display protection)
So i dread the future, the future in which i need a new phone that is somewhere in the mid price segments and fits my needs. In the end i will take something suboptimal and be unhappy with it till it dies.
I despise the phone market.5
Thinking about upgrading a laptop, 4gb ram, i3, and an hdd. Should I upgrade the ram to 8b or the HDD to an SD? Mostly use it to web browsing, and occasional app development.6
Not strictly dev related...
I've been googling for minutes trying to find out the frigging sequential read speed for class 10 SD cards... I could only find the write speed and GAZILLIONS of SD ads.
It should be higher than write speed, right? I need this to give dd command the proper speed so I won't risk losing data (it's a backup) and I won't have to wait forever either. But I'm wasting more time looking up the frigging speed... I need dd cause it's a whole-disk backup (partition or file system seem damaged)
I can't rely on specs because I'm just not sure about the brand and model.
... Ah yes, fuck everything.4
If I manage to complete my current project as intended then it will be my most successful project so far
!dev but a parable
I worked at a Walmart Photo Lab with a Fujifilm photo processor. I had a guy ask for his pictures but they weren’t printed, I could see his order but there was no “payload” ( think PO header with no PO lines). He said he ordered 600+ pictures off his SD card, then blew them away because they were ordered.
As I had no physical pictures, there was nothing I could do but say “sorry”. He was mad, but there was nothing I could do.
Moral of the story, verify backups before wiping the system.
i need an adult. I know noone who would understand my worries, so you guys need to be it.
i have a nextcloud running on my raspberry pi. performance is horrible, dont ask, but it works.
i mostly use it to backup the photos of my phone sd card every night when my phone charges. Internally this works good. If i am elseplace it wont for obvious reasons.
In my youthful joy of doom i opened port 443 and forward it to my raspi. I get internet via cable and my ip is pretty much static (it was the same for 10 months). So external access is provided.
Now i thought, its stupid that i cannot sign an ssl certificate cause i dont have a domain. Lets buy domain. But before i do that i did some try runs with duckdns to test the principle.
Some back and forth, it works now. Pretty god, i could even make a cron job on the raspbi to renew (that should work right?). Only problem. randoname.duckdns.org doesnt work internally. Or should not at least.
So i googled a bit and it turns out that my router (a cable fritz!box i bought myself) can be a local network dns. Or cannot. Regardless what i try, it doesnt accept the changed config file.
Now the problem.
It works anyway. randoname.duckdns.org points to my external "static" ip and resolves to that from my internal network..so it works on my phone or laptop. if i traceroute the thing it goes via two hops out and finishes in less than 1ms.
Now to the problem:
I have no fokkin clue why. The expected behaviour would be that it shouldnt work. If i do what i intended todo on pc in the hosts file tracert works correctly, directly pointing to the internal ip.
What i cannot figure out, is it the fritz!box being smart? Is it my ISP being smart?
Reason to rant: i have absolutly NOONE to ask, i know not a single person who would even understand what troubles me. I want to learn, i want to know WHY not just some mindless russian patchwork of "if it works its good enough".
Told my friends about this awesome app. It used to be my safe place earlier, but oh well... Kinda happy and sad about it at the same time. Hope they don't recognize my handle 😅1
Got the new Android 10 update last night. cool dark theme for OS now and changes apps to dark theme if available. :)1
I'm facing a strange problem, I have a 400GB microsd, it is formatted as exFAT
I tried formatting it again to either ntfs or ext4, on either Linux or macOS, but every tool says format complete then when scans again it still shows the files that storage had + that it's exFAT
I tried gparted, disk utilities (macOS), Disks (ubuntu), mkfs all show same result that it successfully formatted the card but after refresh still shows old filesystem + the contents of the memory already there no file was removed
Can anyone help?21
I finished my graduation project
We developed app for skin disease classification, we used Flutter & Python for training the model on a dataset called SD-198
We tried to use Transfer Learning to hit the highest accuracy but actually IT DIDN'T WORK SURPRISINGLY!!
After that's we tried build our CNN model with a few of layers, we scored %24
We couldn't improve it more, we are proud of ourself but we want to improve it moreee
Thank you for reading.2
[wk224 - stuff on my desk]
Cant post a picture because the office is closed again, but a ceramic cat chopstick holder from tokio, a harry potter mug, some 3d printed hex boxes for sd cards and usb sticks.
WINDOWS?! Why don't you fucking recognise more than one partition?! It's there! You know that! Why don't you display it then?! I did find a workaround but seriously? I only use windows for gaming, ubuntu for everything else, so it wasn't that important.5
Difference between security threat and programming bug ?
Found a cool paper about format string attacks which mentioned buffer Overflow is a security threat while format string is a programming bug.
Had no idea what that really meant.
I have most of my files including all my side projects stores on an SD card that is allways connected to my Mac. Today it stooped working. All gone. One summer of coding wasted. FML.7
my APAP's SD card died and I had a generic 2GB one kicking around unused
>formats as FAT16
>forgets to reformat
Formatting SD Card... done.
Space available: 1.8GB
Set as Primary Log Storage
Formatting SD Card... done.
Space available: 1.8GB
Set as Primary Log Storage
and that's the story of how i managed to not need to spend $200 on a proprietary SD card for my APAP2
When oracle employees decide to add new "feature":
How can we add feature X so it can be the user new most terrible nightmare?
When oracle employees decide to update an existed "feature":
We have discovered that the users of feature X have found a work-around to make it useful, we need to update that feature to make it the users most terrible nightmare ever, and we would like to make the upgrade/installation process break everything else installed on their machines without possible way of recovering, and if it worked by any chance we would like to make that process frustrating as fuck.7
I just want to know why would I find (all of the fucking sudden) tnsnames.ora and listener.ora localhost changed to local.docker.something?
WHY ORACLE? WHHHHYY?1
Installed ros and everything on NVidia board. Dd on to SD card and I have a bootable device.
Fiddle with boot config - fuck yeah.
I then just flash the new board.
Everything crashes FUCK. off and on again... Come on! phew
Ahhh but the flash should work, hmm choose another partition.
Everything is done YES I AM A HACKER. Unplug sd card, off and on again.
No response killed the bootloader, fuck me...
I have been coding exclusively in Python on competitive programming websites. So far I haven't faced any issues w.r.t timing. Is it worth switching to c/c++?5
TWENTY GIGABYTES!?!? I go to install Xamarin so I could work on a cross-platform project. My C drive is minimal in size and Windows doesn't let you install programs on the D drive. This is madd a billion times worse because Windows 10 treats secondary uard drives just like SD cards! Seriously? TWENTY for that framework?2
In recent time, I'm thinking about to start freelancing (or at least start preparing for it).
Problem is that I'm completely new to it. In following weeks, which steps should I take to successfully introduce myself to that market? Which mistakes to avoid? Which sites do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for contribution. :)
Fuck Oracle, fuck you oracle! The stupidest shittiest worst nightmare company with the most user-unfriendly, productivity-killing, illogical, stupid pile of software garbage products ever! And unfortunately I want to extends my worm-fucks to all Oracle employees and maintainers and to the whole fucking community of shit that made up oracle-community and to every conscious being who ever liked, enjoyed or have found the slightest genuine interest of any product tagged "oracle".
I installed the pile of shit a.k.a Oracle 18c and imported a dumb file locally, everything was working in the slightest amount of the word (fine) before it turns to nightmare. I created a C# client to call a stored procedure in that shit of a database engine. I kept getting error related to the parameter types, specifically one which is custom type of Table of numbers. It turns out that the only of doing this is through that shit they called (unmanaged driver), the "managed" doesn't support custom types. So I had to install another package of shit they call (odbc universal install) "universal my a$$ by the way", at that moment, where everything just crashed and stopped working. I spent 3 hours trying to connect to the fucking database to no avail. I shockingly found a folder in my desktop folder called (OracleInstallation) and all windows services related to oracle installation "suddenly" got somehow (re-routed) to that folder.
In conclusion, fuck oracle.3
Do you have a programmers union in your country?
In my country we have a general union for all different kinds of jobs and a engineers union. Maybe if developers had a dev union there would perhaps be less bs11
Those of you who wants the bleeding edge of technology, here's the one for YouTube:
This unlocks the sharing tab on YouTube's mobile app, like in the screenshot below. Make sure you are on your mobile device.
Enjoy sharing! :D
//Oh right, it's supposed to be a rant -
Gosh I hate when I ain't in the new technologic stuff already 'ghah 😡 😋1
I have multiple ones, my uni has for one several amazing professors that I admire. Then there's there's the classics Thompson, kernighan, djikstra et al. T.A.D, uncle Bob and last but not least Stallman
All of them has provided insights, knowledge and a better way to view code and software
I just got to college and can do web dev fairly well (Mern stack mostly). But tbh I am now more interested in being an app developer. Should I try to learn React Native/Flutter or Kotlin/Swift3
I keep getting emails from people I don't know that are like conversations, leading me to believe they aren't sent to the rightful owner. Most of the time, I see the email has uppercase at some places (when mine doesn't).
I just wish the companies could put a mark somewhere in their page when entering an uppercase email that mentions the fact that it doesn't change shit, getting really annoyed from receiving these mails not directed to me 😒
what is wrong with android storage access hierarchy? All i want to do is to make a file explorer app which could show user a list of all the files on their device and memory card(if available), but its been days and i cannot find a proper way for that.
I checked all the Environment class methods and context.getFileDir()/other methods of ContextCompat , but they either point to emulated storage or the app's folder, but not the sd card. I have scratched my head and pulled all my hairs out researching a lot deep into this area, but found nothing. The only thing that works sometime is the hardcoded paths( eg new File("/sdcard") ) , but that looks like a terrible hack and i know its not good.
I have also read briefly about Storage Access Framework, but i don't think that's what I want. From what i know, SAF works in the following manner : user opens my app>>clicks on a button>>my app fires an intent to SAF>> SAF opens its own UI>>user selects 1 or multiple file>> and my app recieves those file uris. THAT'S A FILE PICKER, AND I DON'T WANT THAT.
I want the user to see a list of his files in my app only. Because if not, then what's the point of my app with the title "File explorer"?7
So i'm currently working on my PiStation..
(look at my previous post if you're interested)
I'm imaging over RetroPie over to the SD card, screw back together the housing, and it boots up fine. As soon as i configured my XBOX-controller i got to the wifi-settings. And when i try to access my wifi, guess what, it doesn't connect to my f**kin wifi. So i double check my wifi-settings in the router i just bought to get over my roommates paranoia (that's a whole another story. Just in short, he's got no idea of IT-security and tries to be an admin, which results in a HUGE amount of bulls**t), confirm that the settings are alright, double check the PSK too, anything is fine. So i go through the whole process again, download the image (from their goddamn slow servers), open up the PiStation, image it over to the SD card, close it back up, anything boots up fine and works, except this f**king wifi. And the thing is, i COULD connect it with a patchcable, but i dont want cables going anywhere through my room. Currently imaging over recalbox OS, will keep you updated. I just want to play some old retro games ._.2
Not dev related, assuming that here is a lot of people interested in history , philosophy, books I would like to ask for recommendations for:
YouTube channels or site related to history, books reviews/recommendations (dev and non-dev related), philosophy.
So qq. I am trying to make a portable (low volume) web appliance with a Raspberry Pi...but it’s dog slow. It uses an embedded DB so I am assuming it is probably the SD card that is the bottle neck. Do you think an external drive would help?4
What container/virtualisation technology do you guys prefer?
Also I've been thinking of picking up either k8s or docker, mainly docker for ease of deployment or do you think it's wortb learning both perhaps? I do know they have a bit of different use cases6
I believe that there's some evil dark magic in the BEAM that detects if the user or developer is on a non *nix machine and then purposefully throws all kinds of strange errors or just fucking blows itself up for no reason. Take the shit to a *nix machine and it just works like magic and is easy to work with which is part of the reason why I love it and the ecosystem.
I truly believe that a back end needs to know about front end as much as a front end needs to know about back end.
And a more serious belief is that project managers / owners need to know about both. Thank you.3
Does Google's phone backup thing obey .nomedia or backup the SD card? It's useful to me just due to the /data backup, but I don't want it uploading and categorizing my porn folder for all to see.2
What do you think about Udemy?
And if you took it, which courses did you find most useful - not only related to programming/development but in general?
Thank you in advance. :)3
A few days ago, our latin teacher asked the ICT coördinator to borrow the poor camera of the school to record the lesson. She knows that I am the computerfreak of the class so she gives me the camera and she explanes me how to use it like I don’t fucking know how to use it. She said me that she didn’t know how much space there is left on the SD-Card and so the camera could stop filming. I started up the camera and the first thing that I saw: 27’22”, such a stupid bitch. We returned the camera and said: You could see on the display how many minutes there were left. She seemed pretty ashamed, she ignored us and walked further.7
Tried online assessment for position as SD. Gosh I suck on algorithms. I understand scenarios, but don't know how to write even basic sort. Anyway. This was good experience to open my eyes, what to taught myself.
Alright, I found the root of the issue from my last project post.
It’s the damn MEM indicator.
In my project, I want to be able to load presets from an SD card in order to let the user switch from preset values to values determined and calculated from a potentiometer.
So it’s pretty hard to discern when you’re using the memory and when you aren’t without some kind of indication.
Every fucking time I try to put on that indicator (a red “MEM” at the bottom of the screen) it completely fucks the entire display.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY!!!
Might be possible that there is a VRAM space issue... idk.
Will probably use a LED for indication instead.
Urgent bug, some values are not getting displayed!! Frontend developer is always asked to debug, but don't we always know for sure it's Backend service not sending the value without having to debug
I need some recommendation for Web UI components framework which could be relativity easily integrated/used on Play framework web application.
Something like Primefaces or old Richfaces (but those are for JSF).
Thanks in advance. :)2
Any Kotlin or Java developer that knows how to delete files from SD-card in mobile devices. I have been battling this for over a week now3
I need recommendation for site/community to improve my (clean) code style?
And, in more general, what are your ways to improve code style and programming way of thinking - more oriented towards bigger picture of application/systems (patterns, architecture, etc.)?3
