Our dev team got a new manager. On our first face 2 face meeting:
Manager: So, what technology are we using for web apps?
Me: TypeScript.
Manager: What is TypeScript?
Me: It's a superset of JavaScript.
Manager: Oh I know JavaScript, it's the latest version of Java, right?
Me thinking: He is joking. He tries to be the fun guy. Everyone knows the Java-JavaScript, ham-hamster joke.
Me later, also thinking: No he is not joking. Oh God, this is the end. We are all f*cked!8 -
FUCK!! It's been 3 days in the new office.

Please stop recommending arch. For real. Stop!
Let's back up. I'm an arch user. Have been for years. I love arch! Like hardcore! But for real, cut it out.
Either they didn't ask and you're being obnoxious or they probably asked "what's a good distro to learn?" Or "Ubuntu holds my hand too much, I want something more consoley" either way, arch is not the answer. Arch is a distro for us stuck up types who like spending all day fixing dependency errors, changing our WM every other week, debating the merits of X vs wayland, and acting better than everyone else.
But here's the thing: I found arch because I wanted something that I could compulsively configure and get really in the weeds. I think most arch users feel that way to some degree. You kinda have to if you want to not be miserable. But many Linux users aren't like that. And that's fine! Let them use mint, or Debian. So they never change their DE. Cinnamon is a great interface! Gnome 2 is totally fine! There's literally nothing wrong with being content with sane defaults and not manually installing every package, and having scheduled releases from a stable source.
Do you tell 7th graders "if you really want to get better at algebra, you should try calculus. You really gain a deep knowledge of math!" No! They will get there when they are good and ready! Or not. It's not a beginner distro. In fact (controversial opinion ahead) it's pretty shitty at being a distro. I have used arch for years! But I don't recommend it to anyone. Because if you want to configure a box for literally 100s of hours (it's never really over is it?), Then you aren't asking anyone about distro recommendations. You've tried them all. You've heard of arch. You been to /r/unixporn.
Stop acting better than everyone else and stop telling people it's better than <other distro here>. It's not. It's different. Very different. And it's not for everyone.27 -

In three years, I switched from i3 wm on arch to i3 wm on Ubuntu 16.04 and recently to gnome on Ubuntu 18.04. It sounds like a massive downgrade but I like the normie life for now, it let's me focus on more important things than writing my own scripts to reset the brightness.10

Why the fuck someone write "used linux to speed up development" in your resume. But when you have to use it, questions like "where to download git for linux?" appears?1

I was depressed doing a course I hated.
3 years in and I switched to Computer Science.
Best decision ever!3 -
My brother had been using my PC for watching movies and play games and I wanted to work, so I installed archlinux without any DE or WM, now if he tries to use it he might learn thing or too or leave my PC alone!!!!4

Now this is true. Devrant changed me and now, after one of the devranters post I'm finally searching for a new job. Most of the time I was using PHP, but here I've seen lot of rants about laravel. A million years ago I used and loved a WM called waimea. I used it extensively, and even used it on my work machine. It was abandoned by its author for whatever reason, in 2004. I used a derivative wm for a while, called kahakai and loved that too. Since that time, everything has gone from 32bit to 64, and waimea got buried in the past.
Fast forward to this past weekend, when I discovered, on a whim, that there is an AUR for waimea! There was not one for kahakai though-- that appears to have been genuinely abandoned.
So I installed waimea and started working on configuring it, with only a man page and the wayback machine as a reference. As of a couple days into the effort, I'm not quite there yet, but I love the results so far.2 -

Since everyone is swithcing to Linux I decided to switch to it myself. I chose Arch, as I have some experience with linux. After a couple of hours trying to get my PC to boot from USB (I forgot to turn secure boot of) I began installing. After about 2 hours of switching between install and chroot and the installed system to get Wi-Fi to work (fucking Wi-Fi!!) I was ready to install gui. I decided to go with i3, xfce terminal and zsh + oh-my-zsh. It took me about 5 hours to get the UI looking decent.
In the meantine I learned about AUR and yaourt and how to make a user that can use sudo.
After about 7-8 hours I can say that I actually love it!
What I love:
-yaourt: it can install any software you need. Not in official repo? No problem! It will find it in AUR.
-Pulse Audio: I can controll exactly how loud anything is.
-i3: just i3 in general. It was hard to get used to it at first (coming from windows and xfce), but after 10 minutes I didn't even use mouse.
What I didn't like:
-Getting Wi-Fi to work relyably. I had to switch between install media and live system many times just to install a package that is apparently needed for it, but it's not obvious on the wiki.
-Getting polish characters (like ę,ł,ś) to work took 2 hours and I got to the 4th page in google to find a working solution.
-lack of usefull documentation on what is needed to get a GUI working. There is just a paragraph that to run a DE or WM you need x11 server installed. After installing it and running startx nothing happened. After some googleing I learned that I also needed sddm or lightdm-gtk-greetet installed AND enabled by systemctl enable and NOT systemctl start.
-Systemd-boot. It can automatically detect that I have windows installed, but not the arch linux install I just did? What the fuck? Why?
Overall, if someone asked me if it was warth I would probably say yes. If I end up not liking it I still have my Windows install (for gaming) intact (I hope, I didn't check) I can return to.15 -
I was inspired by ADL to show off my first rice. Need to write some conky scripts to make it a little more interesting on the desktop.
Using i3 as the WM, with more or less vanilla i3status. Thinking of switching over to polybar at some point possibly. I used oomox to make my own theme, so nemo, firefox, and all other system applications are matching. Check her out!7 -

Finally decided to give Arch Linux a go on hardware.
I've never had so much fun installing a distro before.
I chose Deepin as the desktop environment, it's fucking beautiful.
(I somehow didn't really take to i3, I prefer a full blown environment like Deepin).
Since it's my first time using Arch and Deepin, do you guys have any advice? How you like to use and maintain Arch? Any tips? Productivity hacks? (Besides a tiling WM)3 -

tl;dr I lost my path, learned to a lot about linux and found true love.
So because of the recent news about wpa2, I thought about learning to do some things network penetration with kali. My roommate and I took an old 8gb usb and turned it into a bootable usb with persistent storage. Maybe not the best choice, but atleast we know how to do that now.
Anyway, we started with a kali.iso from 2015, because we thought it would be faster than downloading it with a 150kpbs connection. Learned a lot from that mistake while waiting apt-get update/upgrade.
Next day I got access to some faster connection, downloaded a new release build and put the 2015 version out it's misery. Finally some signs of progress. But that was not enough. We wanted more. We (well atleast I) wanted to try i3, because one of my friends showed me to /r/unixporn (btw, pornhub is deprecated now). So after researching what i3 is, what a wm is AND what a dm is, we replaced gdm3 with lightdm and set i3 as standard wm. With the user guide on an other screen we started playing with i3. Apparently heaven is written with two characters only. Now I want to free myself from windows and have linux (Maybe arch) as my main system, but for now we continue to use thus kali usb to learn about how to set uo a nice desktop environment. Wait, why did we choose to install kali? 😂
I feel kinda sorry for that, but I want to experiment on there before until I feel confident. (Please hit me up with tips about i3)
Still gotta use Windows as a subsystem for gaming. 😥3 -
I only just started learning Js. And it's going smoothly. In two weeks, I should have gone past the Beginner's level. Then what next?7

The document.getElementbyId function . It is so long.
Aldo this probably poes not count but the export function does not accespt whitespace before and after the = sign
So instead of
export PATH = "$PATH:/foo/bar/baz"
You need to write
export PATH="$PATH:/foo/bar/baz"8 -

Back to using WSL because I suck at installing windows apps on Wine (and that I can't seem to connect to a WiFi with PEAP on Linux that the network admin know how to except on Windows).
So can't exactly rice Windows. I know I can with raindock and all that but its not the same as Linux. So I'm on WSL, installed tmux and wouldn't you know it, I found plenty of dot tmux files on Github.
But alas, its not the same as i3wm but its close.8 -

To all you linux fans out there:
What DE/WM would you use for a 2 monitor desktop setup?
I’ve tried i3 and a couple major DEs (xfce, gnome, kde,...) and i don’t really have a strong preference for either.
I like the efficiency of i3 but also the ease of use of - say - xfce. I’d definitely use i3 on a laptop, but i dunno what i should go for on desktop... recommendations?6 -
What would you use for building the baclend of a moderately complex web application that probably will have a small userbase?
Ruby on Rails
Django
ASP.NET Core
Spring/Springboot
Node.js

If what you would like to use something else that is not listed feel free to tell about it in the comments19 -
So my laptop broke recently, and I've been looking for a replacement, but everything is so expensive.
I was thinking of just buying something really lightweight for like 100 - 200 $, then putting linux on it (no gui) and running everything through the terminal. I basically want to be able to work on github projects with, maybe use minimal internet.
Vim + git is all i use for github projects anyways, and lynx would let me do the small amount of internet that i want.
My one concern is that itd be very nice to have a window manager (terminator, i3, etc), not sure exactly how that would work with no gui.
Any thoughts on this setup overall? Or specifically the wm part?12 -
I've gone through so many tiling wm this semester and can't figure out what I like best...
i3, bspwm, xmonad, windowchef, herbstuffwm, awesomewm, fvwm, etc.
I love the cleanliness and productivity aspect of them compared to something like Windows and it's floating/snap feature. Awesomewm looks like a good choice but the config scripting is quite verbose.
So many choices! Probably doesn't help I want to keep it consistent across my laptop and 3 monitor setup (1 21:9, 2 16:9).7 -
Hey, I asked a similar question some weeks ago and couldn't manage to find a solution to my problem.
I run Debian with i3-wm.
Some applications, e.g. file-roller, menulibre, need really long to start, up to half a minute.
Has anyone of you had something similar, or knows what may cause this ?2 -
After I finished the university, I felt like I didn't know anything. I'm learning everyday something new in my work (I'm working 8 years as a dev), but I can't say comfortably that I'm good at programming. After work I'm going home, where I learn and practice new things and deepen my understanding of the core concepts, but again, I feel like I don't know anything. Will I ever feel that I'm a good programmer?2

I'm considering switching to a tiling windows manager. The main thing drawing me back is that in my job we work a lot on each others computers (helping, debugging, pair programming...).
Will using a tiling WM make my workspace hard to use for somebody else ? It would be disqualifying7 -
Oh Lord, I forgot how bad windows and the proprietary applications made for it are... 10 years on Linux and it just keeps raising the bar, but I feel like Win is getting worse! Why do companies pay for this bs, if it has zero advantage over any os!? no reason devs need to have the same exact computers as everyone else in the company, it's just so... inefficient, maybe if we had something better, with yknow, less latency, less "not responding" when all I did was click minimize, Linux is free, I think one of the 200,000+ employees can figure it tf out, then maybe they wouldn't have to cut the per diem to $40 a day...
...This is my life without a tiling wm, just sucks 😭4 -
I just learned C and I have created some projects like Parking System and Library Management System. My problem is I don't know mathematics and I want to learn DataStructures & Algorithms and become pro in it. In the whole September I will still be focusing on C and create more projects. I have started learning Mathematics today from High School level to College level. I thik maths will take 1 year to complete. After September in the October I want to start learning C++ and finish C++ till the end of Dec 2019. I want to know that do I have to first finish my maths learning which will take 1 year then I should start learning Data Structures and Algorithms? As I said I want to become a professional in Algorithms. I think its not possible to learn DS&A yet I have to wait 1 year till I finish learning my Maths. I can't do more with C & C++ without knwoing DS&A? If I started learning DS&A with C++ in the future then I can't become good at algorithms? I want to do competitive programming and be at Top 1 of Hacker Rank and other sites like this.7

I am learning C and next I will learn C++, SQL,DS&A, Assembley, Lex&Yacc,Operating Systems, Computer Arcticture, Computer Networks because I think it's enough for my goal. The only reason I am learning this, to make my own C++ clone with my own knowledge. But I really don't know how can I create my own programming language like C++ from scratch. Like what are the first steps to began with. As I know that C, first step is Preprocessor then Compiler then Assembler then (Loader/Linker).
Anyone please give me a step by step guide like learn this language first then this then this. So I can finally reach that amount of knowledge which I can implement to create my own programming language like C++.7 -

I was a bit confused when my supervisor told me to use Windows VM through Vagrant for testing environment. AFAIK each VM should be treated as a single machine, so it requires a Win license.
There are several criterias for us to be able to use Win WM legally.
One of them is Qualified Multitenant Hoster (QMTH) Program from MS, it authorizes qualified 3rd-party hosting service providers to host customers’ Win VM. Other option is to check if we have on-premise dedicated use rights.
I don't know if we fulfill any of the criteria. I don't want to cause any trouble so I am not gonna ask my supervisor about it.6 -

Up until now, I never had any breaking updates on Linux on my laptop, Except for Nvidia drivers stopping. It would switch to noveau. Even my cobbled together hack of Broadcom Bluetooth solution worked without even having to touch it. Well, I still don't have problems with core Linux but add gnome to the issue mix today. Surprisingly, Nvidia drivers for the first time Nvidia drivers upgraded (to 340) and I didn't had to do anything for it to work. Gnome deprecated synaptics driver support and now uses libinput implementation for it. Well Ubuntu Gnome updater won't clean the configuration and I had to remove the driver and clean config myself. Nothing too much, i have to deal with these stuff on my arch installation but Ubuntu has been "it works fine. No need to interfere" thing for me. It works fine on Wayland (it always used libinput on Wayland a if I am correct) but nvidia drivers doesn't support Wayland. And then since the update gnome has been disabling some of my extensions at random. All on X. I have no problems with Wayland except for Nvidia fucking drivers. All that said, its still better than windows where I lost fucking network connectivity during something important. And the trackpad drivers on Linux are somehow much better than anything I have used on windows. (that or Sony made fucking great trackpads and nobody noticed). Here's to hoping Nvidia starts supporting drawing on Wayland and I can ditch X completely. I have seen visible improvements in performance under load and slight decrease in battery usage with Wayland.9

How long does it take to start writing codes without having to do “too much” looking up of some context?
I’m quite at the intermediate level and I fear I do a lot of cramming(and pouring) than actual coding.

How do you guys do it? How do I become ‘pro’?6 -
Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -
Protip: If you're using a tiling window manager, you can detach the file browser on the left of any Jetbrians IDE.
This way you can switch to it using the shortcuts you're used to from the WM, as well as resize it very easily.
Also this way if you are not using the integrated terminal of the IDE, you can have the file browser span the full height of your screen, while the terminal and the IDE share the hight on the right.
Disclaimer: I don't know if this is common knowledge, I'm sorry if it is, but I was completely shocked that I missed this feature for years.6 -

Is there a way to compile a game for Windows from Linux in Unreal engine? I did google some posts but the answer was either use a Virtual machine which will not be done or use the the theoretical method of using mingw but the forum posts state that it will be tricky business or use a windows machine. I have dual booted windows with linux on my machine.
However since the machine has a 512 gb ssd most of the storage space is devoted to unreal engine which takes 47 gigs in itself and have a lot of programs installed I have a usable 20 gigs left out of 145 gig partition. Windows has around 318 gigs of storage to it but I have 100 gigs free at most. So after installing the windows sdk, visual studio with extensions, unreal engine and some other stuff I don't have much space left for myself. I need that much space since I install a lot of games to my ssd. So now I cant load my bigger projects for playing on my windows. I could use my hdd which is mostly used for backups and 100+ gig stuff. Though the hdd's are of course far slower than ssd's which shouldn't be a problem however last time I used visual studio it ate more than 2 gigs of ram for a solution meaning that the compiler has very low memory for itself to actually compile so for any large files the hdd has more of a bottleneck.
Oh and I can't upgrade my ssd's or ram because I don't have enough money.
Thanks for the answers in advance5 -
Sorry for posting a non dev goal
1. Check every social media ultra often and the first thing in the morning. I was late or sometimes completely missed something because I did not check my social media. Today I missed school because study leve was kinda cancelled. But guess what did not check my social media for the announcement and checked it in rhe afternoon when school was long over. No nwed to check email because nearly nothing important comes there except my report card which is resent on whatsapp 4 times a year4 -
Got rid in Windows completely because I realised I could never mine without the i3-wm. I can't help but remember when my Pokémon leveled up way back in the day and think
"Congratulations! Your polaroidkidd has evolved! 😅 -
Update on the ACPI booting error - i attempted to install antergos onto the SWAP partition (to try to rescue my files and then reinstall antergos) which was 8gb, which is too small to install antergos, a DE, and the bootloader. i wiped everything. Impatience is a bitch. why am i like this.
i also decided on using xfce rather than kde - i feel like it runs faster. I can get the kde WM right? i miss my wobbly windows -
I like the look and feel of gnome, but its extension system is SO FUCKING BROKEN. Like ho-ly-shit... You need a fucking browser extension to install or update them! Since not too long you can also do that via 'tweaks', but guess what: IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK.
...
Now that I think about it, if I need all these extensions to make gnome nicer, maybe gnome isn't all that good. Any suggestions for other wm's?1 -
Do you use i3 (dynamic tiling windows manager) on your *nix system?
What are your favourite tips/hacks for optimisation?8 -
What should i use for making a app which needs to learn on both android and windows and maybe ios. It is pretty simple. Mainly needs notification, network and file acccess, does not cost an arm and a leg, uses less than 1 gb of memory at a time and being able to be used as to make a backend is a plus. Being able to be used commercially is a plus too. Also please suggest somehing that does not have a steep learning curve3

Hey look! I just finished configuring my window manager, better change it to a new one and start configuring it...1

Any tips to speed up wordpress site. I have googled and tried as many solutions I can except adding cdn. I have minified images, html, css and js. I have used caching on the server with litespeed cache. There are not many plugins on the site.
The plugins installed are elementor, litespeed, orbit fox, wp-optimize, updraft plus and wpforms lite. The site takes around 4 to 5 seconds to fully load. I am doing this for a releative(don't worry he is sane and I am doing pretty simple stuff for him which is simply not worth charging). I cannot use cloudflare cdn since they need nameserver access and the hosting service used is hostinger which have put a lot of dns records which I don't understand and don't wanna mess with unless it is the last option.12 -
I was using ubuntu mate 16.04 and recently installed i3 wm and I am using it regularly. Any suggestions for me?2

Dumb question
What are some good companies for consumer networking equipment. I need a unmanaged switch and might buy a router from them. There will be 7 cables run though it. I have heard praises for ubiquiti but mostly from U.S. youtubers and I live in India so service might defer. Being cheap is a plus point.3 -
I’m very disappointed in PowerToys.
Especially the “FancyZones”.
I was hype when they first starting to work on their window manager.
But then....after a lot of feedback from community (which want something like an i3wm, fully keyboard driven) They come up with this??
I feels waste more time to manage window with FancyZones than not using anything at all.
I’ll stick with my custom hack window manager for now....
(Despite the limitation of win32api, it got a fully keyboard driven + auto tiling)

Easiest transition from xubuntu into a tiling WM like i3?. Is there a more forgiving solution for a mouse addict such as myself? should I master vim/emacs first?1

Newbie question
Any good free resources for full stack web development. Also if a resource teaches mainly frontend but also teaches some backend it is a full stack web development resource in my eyes. I was looking at freecodecamp but it is a bit too vast for me. I am also looking at the cokplete intro to web development v2 course by Brian holt for free on frontend masters but it is 2 years old and has not been updated. Also it does not teach that much bakcend hust node and express.
Also another question is frontend masters good for web development. I did not find many threads about it. I got a discount for it which gives me a one year subscription for 195 dollars18 -
Sorry for asking this question again but I got no replies or releated replies.
Is app academy open good for learning fullstack web development for a newbie or somewhat new to web development. There are barely any reviews on the internet about it. I did kinda ask about them in one of my previous rants but was recommended fullstackopen by @100110111
. I started fullstackopen pretty recently. App academy seems good too but it is a 1000+ hours soo I wanted to know if I am learning anything useful there.
Also thanks @100110111 fullstackopen is pretty good5 -
Has anyone here used app academy open. Is it good and does it teach useful and up to date stuff? I was thinking of doing it but there are barely any reviews online. There is a reddit thread about why it is handicapped but it is old and a user clarified it was misinformation. https://reddit.com/r/...
Their curriculum seems to be pretty good except that I will need to learn ruby on rails which I need to forget after the MERN stack part and that they teach docker compose instead of kubernetes -
I want to learn c# to build a mobile app with xamarin and a website with asp.net core. I have some programing experience and have build some meh apps. What should I use
Head First C#, 4th Edition
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition
C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight
C# 9 and .NET 5 - Modern Cross-Platform Development - Fifth Edition teaches what I want to learn but the Xamarin section seems a bit short. C# Fundamentals by Scott Allen on Pluralsight was recommended a lot to beginners online and I can always learn Xamarin from Microsoft Learn12 -
Should I go for freecodecamp or app academy open or some other free resource to learn full stack web development. Freecodecamp's explanations are starting to get over my head. App academy open seems great except they teach ruby on rails before teaching MERN stack and there are only three reviews on the internet I could find12

On devrant I sometimes see a good amount of posts saying angular is garbage but nearly none about react. Why is angular so hated.3

Is huwaei insane for saying that 1 line of their harmonyos code can do 100 lines of android code. I watched this in a coldfusion video. Link :- https://youtube.com/watch/... , The line I mentioned is at 11:556

Should I write my app as a pwa or in electron. The app needs to be on mobile devices too but I wont mind rewriting the app for another platform since the app is pretty small. It only needs notifications, network access and basic read and write access to write some pretty small configs. Most of the code will be for the ui anyways1

Not exactly a rant but some annoyances
Whenever I copy paste code from kindle it does not space the code. Stack overflow says that kindle is using characters for space which are not present in UTF-8 which causes the issue and the find and replace option coes not work in vs code which the author is using. And if you copy from kindle whether you use the button or Ctrl + C it will add the book title and the author at the end. Who the fuck though this was a good idea.
Oh a table does not fit on the screen render whatever fits even if it is the top line of the table. This is probably not an issue and they cannot fix it and I shoild just deal with it.
The author introduces me to the language compiler and lists a command to what versions are available. I get an error which says the command is not found on windows. I dont find any solutions on google, so I go the next place and author says that he knows about it and shows a link to fix it and tells to folloe the instructions. But the link does not have any instructions and just has instructions to configure the compiler itself. The only releveant information was the path to the compiler which the author could have included there or said that was the only relevant information. The path was correct but I needed to install some stuff through Visual Studio2 -
