So, I needed a package installed on one of our Unix servers. The package manager--which is obsolete garbage--was failing with a message which can only be described as a variant of "Go fuck yourself". A quick Google search didn't help.
3 espressos and an eternity later, I have descended into a manic state. My hair has turned grey and I have started lactating. As a last-ditch effort, I try a new search query on Google, and the first link takes me to a forum with a thread discussing a similar issue. The last post in the thread has a solution which works for me. After fixing the issue, everything in the world feels right and I decide to thank the generous poster, who is like an angel to me at this point.
Guess what? The poster is none other than me. 8 months back, I had created a user account on the forum just to post the solution to a similar issue I had on another server.13 -
IF YOU WRITE IN A FORUM ABOUT A PROBLEM AND YOU SOLVED THE PROBLEM, TELL US THE FUCKING SOLUTION YOU MORRON! YOU TOOK THE EFFORT TO JUST WRITE "I SOLVED THE PROBLEM" WITHOUT WRITING A WORD ON HOW THE FUCK YOU DID IT. DO YOU THINK I READ THIS FUCKING TOPIC FOR FUN? I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN THE SOLUTION, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU SOLVED IT OR NOT!!!12

Thanks to some random guy on a forum at page 100000000000000 of duckduckgo I figured out that I need to change the USB mode of my laptoo-tablet in order to allow UEFI booting.
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO FUCKING PROPERLY DOCUMENT THAT?!12 -
*On a programming support forum*
Guy: My compiler keeps throwing null pointer exception at line 128.
Me: Ok. Can you post your code real quick so I could figure out what is null at line 128?
Guy: No I'm not going to show my code to someone on the internet. What if you want to steal my code?
My mind: "Dude wtf why would I steal someone's code on a support forum?"
Me: *Use the next 15 minutes explaining that showing the code is necessary so that others can actually help him, and that no one on a support forum is going to steal his code.*
Guy: "You know what I'm more convinced that you want to copy my code. I might as well just try to fix this on my own."
What?15 -
1. Search on google for an answer
2. Find someone asking the same question on some forum
3. See the question has an answer
4. The answer is "Please search yourself before asking. Thread locked."
This happens too often..4 -
If you ask a question in a forum and figure out the answer yourself, for the love of God, please post the fricking answer.
"Never mind" is not at all helpful. Ugh. Stop being selfish peasants.2 -
Applied for my first dev position last year. Interviewer asked for a code sample so I showed him some forum software I was working on at the time. I think my commit messages tanked the interview...5

Today I told a fellow dev to join devRant, and explained it was "like Reddit, but only for developers"

Spent nearly a day to get this tiny laptop-tablet to work.
I got myself a second hand Asus T100TAF but Linux compatibility was far to be found. Online resources said I'd be very lucky if I'd even get the touchscreen or the WiFi to work.
I've been installing distro's all day and I finally have a working version!
Lubuntu with Budgie as desktop environment. Touchscreen works out of the box and some random person on the Linux mint forum linked to a github thing. Lost all hope already but this made the fucking WiFi work.
Can dock and undock it and it works great.
Thanks to all open source devs for this!19 -
Dammit, I can't even describe how much I hate when I'm researching to fix a problem, find a forum/question and the guy answering it makes a post saying "Forget about it, solved it" but doesn't say how.3

Woman: IF you could make all the people in this forum brawl, I would go with you tonight.

Man: Hold! Not today! I must convince them all!joke/meme very looooooooooooooooooong i suppose joke hey how long can this tag be? php wow a new guy7 -

Can anyone relate to the fact that before you disturb your co-worker with an issue you should ATLEAST try fucking google?
Not to mention the documentation, stackoverflow, msdn, forums. Hell, once, I found the answer I needed on a freaking bakery forum.10 -
You know what? I'm starting to think Stack Overflow has an elitist attitude problem. I post an earnest question in meta and 3 out of 4 guys ridicule the idea and are rude. Only one person seemed willing to even consider my question. The other 3 just posted rebuttals of my idea. This is a Q&A forum, not the U.S. presidential debates, damnit!13

You write code.
A strange issue prevents you to proceed further.
Try one fix. Fails.
Try another Fix. Fails.
...
Try fix #28. Fails.
You decide to ask for help in the support forum.
You start writing your post, mentioning everything you've tried so far. You feel your social anxiety and fear the humiliation of being told "because you didn't try X, you idiot". Then you come up with an idea for fix #29.
(fix #29 normally involves Wireshark or similar low-level inspection tool)
Try fix #29. It succeeds :)6 -
A: There is not even a single forum for cyber security. Let's build one.

Just read a forum thread where someone uses an excel spreadsheet as their database for a PHP website. What makes it worse is they have done this for the past 12 years.

Earlier I signed up on this forum called NulledBB. Basically some hacker skiddie forum that had a dump of an archive I wanted, unfortunately behind a paywall which I didn't want to bother with.
On signup I noticed that I couldn't use my domain as an email address, as I usually do (the domain is a catch-all which means that mail addresses can be made up for each service I sign up to on the fly, super useful). They did expose the regex that they accepted email as however, which included something along the lines of "@live.*".
So I figured, why not register a subdomain live.nixmagic.com real quick and put that into the mail servers? Didn't take too long and that's what I eventually went with, and registered as somepissedoffsysop@live.nixmagic.com (which I have no trouble putting on a public forum as you'll see in a minute).
Still didn't manage to get that archive I wanted but I figured, fuck it. It's a throwaway account anyway. But eventually that email address started to receive spam. Stupid motherfucker of a forum operator with his Kali skidmachine probably leaked it.
Usually I just blacklist the email address in SpamAssassin by adding an additional spam score of 100 to email sent to such addresses. But in that case it didn't even sit on the main domain, thanks to that stupid regex block from earlier... 😏
*Logs into my domain admin panel*
*Le rm on the live.nixmagic.com record*
Null routed entirely.. nulled, if you will! 🙃3 -

Please post it as a comment (or in the google group).7 -
It's been posted by a child in a forum so I shouldn't be evil, but it made me laugh 😂
The question was "why so many errors?"5 -
I know this kid who goes around bragging about the fact that he leaches torrents (I think that's the right term) and he puts his "botnet " in the torrent so he can infect other computers.
Considering his computer skills look like he watches "how to hack a website with cmd" videos, I doubt he actually does this. In reality he probably watched a video about it once and thinks he is a pro.
Or maybe I completely underestimated this kid and he has a really powerful botnet that can take down Google.
(Ha also says that he runs a "dark web forum " and he doesn't use tor to connect to .onion sites)
</ random story>4 -
Throwback to when some teenager tried to pay me and my buddy $10 (total, not each) to develop a custom forum website for his ArmaIII video game server, then got mad at me when I told him that's unreasonable

My mother wanted to upload a Picture to an stupid online forum... she already had a screenshot... so i told her to open "Imgur.org" she opened it and i showed her how to upload a Picture, we then uploaded that picture and posted the link on that forum... we then opened the link... and she was like: "OMG! Other people can now do shit with my PC!!"
which i replied to: Its a Picture...
She again was like: BUT LOOK!
I again its a Picture, they cant do anything...
I got mad and walked out...3 -

my last job I got through sending a tweet to someone I knew from working on an open source project. I found the open source project through going to a conference. I found the conference through being an active user on a forum.

Twitch Developer Rig sucked hard and was cropping my extension down to 300px high no matter if it was “panel” which should be this high or everything else.
So I posted to their forum and they committed a fix MINUTES later.

Typical interaction in any XDA development thread:
User: How do I put these ROMs on my phone? Plz halp!
Me: ROOT -> flash RECOVERY -> enter recovery -> flash ROM -> flash Gapps -> profit.
User: How to get the roots? Can halp me?
Me: You're in a Nexus forum. There are directions on how to root everywhere.
User: I can't find. Plz halp.
Me: Fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery.img, flash SuperSU, flash ROM...
User: Where I can get fastboot?
Me: *link to Google developer's page*
User: Can you just tell me?
Me: No, you need to figure it out, so you know what you're doing.

User: HALP! I use toolkit for to get roots, and now phone won't come on! How to fix?! Halp, halp, halp!
*5 minutes later*
User: bump

I'm currently developing an integration to an API and I found out a bug.
So I asked the contact person for the API if this feature was intentional. I did this on their forum for the API and I sent it as a private message to him.
I got a response telling me that they dont have the "sufficient details" to answer my question and that they would investigate the feature "comprehensivley".
5 minutes later I see a post on the forum in the developer section from the contact dude and it was my fucking question.
So now he's asking the users of the API if his and his companys own bug is intentional.
What the actual fuck?!
Is this how you investigate things "comprehensivley"? -
Gotta love going to a support forum and going through three pages of literally nothing but "I'm having this issue too" with 0 input on fixing said issue.
Fucking lovely6 -
You know what I realized something. And im gonna brag about it. I taught myself laravel, vue, JavaScript, basic Unix server admin stuff and more all without every asking a single question on a forum.
Basically out of laziness, and impatience, though.
Still, go me.4 -
Haven't used stack exchange in a while - forgot how cancerous the community is. Posted a question today on the raspberry pi forum, and someone (within a few mins of posting) edited my post to replace a hyphen with a comma, and removed the word "basically".16

If you ever get a problem with your Linux,
DO NOT EVER try out an answer on any random forum without reading all the comments/replies.
The problem spreads like a freaking wildfire and you will end up reinstalling Linux and losing data what wasn't backed up. (If by God's grace, you do a regular back up)2 -
My favorite year as a dev + why?
It would have to be this year because ..
- The 'pointy hair' bosses I've ranted about on this forum have been fired or they quit. I almost kinda forgot what it felt like to talk to managers not feel like "Good Lord, how does this guy put on his shoes"
- I took over the position of my nemesis (his choice, not mine) who quit (he quit before he was fired) and deleted+replaced all remnants of his code/life's work. More out of spite than necessity.
- Reaping the benefits of properly logging/reporting errors and developers able to fix those errors, nearly eliminating those 3:00AM 'System is down' phone calls.
- Able to take time to learn new technologies (learning React right now) and not constantly running around putting out fires.
- Son just graduated college at age 21. -
Ok people. If you see a forum with an issue you're having, for the love of fuck, don't post "Omg I'm having that same issue!" Quite frankly, I don't give two shits if you have this issue or not. It's annoying as fuck to have to read through 3 pages of that bullshit to get to the answer for the problem.5

Fuck android studio updates, fuck OpenGL libraries, fuck nvidia graphics on Linux, fuck it all to hell.
These bullshit updates keep breaking stuff in apps, and then the emulator itself gets broken somehow, then I need to run a bullshit shell script I found on some esoteric Arch Linux forum to symlink OpenGL .so libraries on my Linux machine every time I update because fucking OpenGL and nvidia crappy drivers on Linux, which also broke my xrandr configs and segfaulted the xfce4-display app.
Seriously that's horseshit. Linux will never ever ever break through the glass ceiling and become idiot-proof non-tech user friendly like the botnets Winblows and macPrison.7 -

This is a follow up to my previous rant where I complained about Lenovo firmware update failing and bricking a relative’s computer.
We bought a chip programmer, got the bios from some forum and the thing fucking worked. I’m actually surprised it did, I’m not used to doing shit like this. I was pretty fucking scared of burning something.
The programmer also came with a clamp so we could hook it to the chip without desoldering it. Thank god.
I’m terribly depressed so good timing with that I guess.1 -
I found a post in the depths of the steam forum about borderlands 2,that if you open the steam-overlay's browser while in-game, go to youtube, start a video and paused it, you would get +10-15% FPS. Tried it and it worked.
I can't even start to imagine the causal chain that causes such a... bug? feature?4 -
In a forum far far away...
<user> I need help understanding something about this library.
<various users> This is how it works. This is something to consider. Here is a good way to learn all of this. etc Really helpful people.
<user> I would say more about what I want to do, but I don't want to receive any more "mouthful of unsolicited advises ".
Really? You fucking ask a question on a forum about what you want to learn. Everyone there takes it seriously and provides some really golden shit on how to learn the topic. Then you shit on them for daring to provide ways to learn the topic?
I don't know if this is a language barrier, or if they are using Google translate. I have no idea. But they come across as an asshole.6 -
Watching a piece (a Belgian TV series) about hackers
- Police IT dpt takes a burned down computer (literally burned down -- black from the smoke), plug it into the mains and remove a graphics card. To collect evidence from.
- A policeman from IT dpt is browsing some company's website (while at the police station), looking at their clients. Address bar says: 127.0.0.1.
- The police hacker is browsing some forum. She got the post author's IP and MAC addresses from that forum post metainfo.

This guy asked for help in msdn forum before he shoots himself out of frustration. A lot of people tried to help him with the linker errors.

Once again, answered my own question in stack overflow. That my problems are so unique, it makes me lonely even in a dev forum.2

Curious did any of you have a specific reason to learn how to program?

I started programming when I was 14, because I was deeply enrooted in MMORPG hacking communities. It gave me an escape from real life, and I felt empowered by the skill to create something from nothing. My first language was Lazarus FPC, followed by VB.NET, C#, C++ ( managed and unmanaged non CLR ). As time went on, I found more ways to turn my "hacks" into software, and finally I began selling subscriptions which required me writing an authentication system.
After weeks of research, I began writing my own REST API in PHP using MySQL as my database. At this point I had an IPB forum up and running for a year, but with my newly acquired knowledge I was able to couple my API with my forum software. To properly distribute my API i had to learn NGINX to route my API to a subdomain.
Soon after I began writing my own portal for my authentication system, at which point I had become entirely enveloped in Web Development. I was 17 when I dropped my forum, I'm now 21 and freelancing web app consulting, day job as a QA automation developer. -
I was setting up a small home server running CentOS to my closet and was fighting with a USB Wifi adapter that wouldn't stay "awake". Googled the error messages and nothing...
Decided to about it on the CentOS forums and mentioned (MENTIONED, WASNT THE POINT) CWP (CentOS WebPanel) in my question, an admin came, COMMENTED A LINK TO A FORUM POST THAT TOLD "CWP IS NO WAY LINKED TO CENTOS" AND CLOSED THE QUESTION!
FUUUCKKKKK, i wanted to hit something sooo hard. The admin basically turned my point from A to X.4 -
Did you ever had issues with non working usb devices on Linux? I had today and after some search I probably found the solution. But I at first couldn't believe it. Then all the guys in the comments went Batman.2
-
Dammit Peter, just make a damn decision and *stick with it*. This is explicitly your choice - I don't care whether we go with framework x, framework y, or framework z. I'm comfortable with each of them. So's everyone else on the team.
But for the love of Dijkstra, please do the research, cement it in place & stop changing your mind in every bloody standup because of another forum post you've seen where someone had an unrelated issue with x framework 2 years ago. -
Do you guys ever feel like you lose the ability to be objective about your own work. I've looked at my website for so long now, I don't know if I think it's good or not...5
-
I know this is the second rant on a row about this, but I really need to hear someone saying that IBM enterprise software sucks. Nothing works, everything heavy and slow as fuck, documentation doesn't exist, official developer's forum gives me an error on login, many IBM official pages give me a 500 internal error. And, in the end, this costed as hundreds of thousands of euro. Seriously?7

That one time I answered a question on a forum and another guy was like: "Damn son, I wish I had thought of that! Wanna hang at this code-LAN next weekend?" 😅

if you're gonna shitpost in devrant, make sure to tag as shitpost.
I like shitposts as long as they are acknowledged as such. The problem ones are unironical shitposts.
These lazy ass posts that seem to be written by someone bored in a commute are liquefying my shit.
I'm referring to 2 line posts like "it's hot in here" or "x broke today" with no development whatsoever.
Like people think this is Shitter or something and they can just spam shit about every mundane detail of their day to day.
That's chit chat, nothing wrong with that, but you don't chit chat in a forum, you dm your buddies.5 -

Where I am, we have one per 4,700 people..
So, how many more do we need..
I would ask elsewhere, but it appears every medical forum I ask such questions in, is infected with assholes who are just abusive and refuse to answer the question, even though they are highly medically qualified and experienced.
It's almost as if, they don't want us to know how shit the situation really is !
Being how here is full of logical, intelligent folk, who are good at looking at the numbers, what answers might you give for this ?14 -
!rant (all ranters should read)
Today I was at university, doing some C low-level stuff. Then I looked my Professor.
Holy fucking shit, this man (and obviously the others) learned programming without google, stackoverflow, youtube and online doc/forum/examples/explanation.
I also believe that some of them could not compile and run at home their software.
MASSIVE RESPECT FOR YOU ALL !1 -
I found this question on EmguCV's forum that matches my exact issue.
First answer: Never mind - all. I answered it myself.
Welp. Thanks for nothing. How fucking difficult can it be to post your solution to the issue? -
Was tired of all the bullshit on Facebook and quora. Accidentally discovered this forum. Hoping to like it !6

Apparently someone posted on Apple's developer forum 2 weeks ago about this root privilege escalation vulenerability in macOS but it took a viral tweet to get any action. 😐1

I worked at a computer repair shop about ten years ago and had a coworker who seemed like a pretty cool guy, very smart, and a few years after I left that job I tried to look him up online to reconnect - I thought there was a potential friendship there. But the weird thing was, for all of his technical savvy, his online presence was almost non-existent. I found him tucked away in some old posts on some weird forum site, so I registered on it just to send him a PM. Unfortunately he never responded.9

I changed my default search engine to DDG for some weeks to try something new. Sadly I must say that it isn't for me. At least not in the company I work. Reason is: we use a German CMS with most Forum posts written in German and I noticed really fast that Google just gives me much better results on specific issues.
Are you guys happy with DDG?9 -
My dream project is to continue and improve my gaming website. It's a blog & community that's supportive of (but not limited to) female gamers. It's a positive place for gamers of any type to go, judgement free.
I have so many big ideas for the site, a forum, possibly user profiles, gaming quizzes and trivia, lots more ways to interact. I would love to do like a "find the right game for you" type of thing and have more time to blog..but I just simply don't have the time right now. :(
Baby steps for now. 🎮4 -
Typical, someone asks in a technical forum for advice about Alexa can do to help their mum and mentions she is going blind.
I post a link to an experimental treatment, and its deleted by the admin !
Well, excuse me for trying to help someone not go blind !28 -
Fucking mobile single player online games.
So there I am, sitting on the tube, being passed around London like a unit of sweet corn taking a ride on the mud salad that decorates the interior of the common worm.

One day some psychopath who sees what they're up to is going to find out where they live and then there will be no where that they live.
On another note. This is devrant. Vent, be angry, let it out.
It's turning into some pathetic joke.
Stop pussy footing around you bunch of pussyholes.

I think that would be config tool for F1 Challenge ‘99-‘02 game which was called VMT Engine. It introduced me to modding community, the VMT Engine project taught me A LOT about software development.
The origin of this tool was I posted on F1 2014 VMT development forum thread “Hey! Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a tool that let you change tires type?”, so the VMT leader said “Why don’t you do it?”...So I did it 😐
I’m actually still updating the source code to this day1 -

11/13 questions..
If I create a product, lets say a new toaster.
Naturally I have a .com website for that..
So far so good..
Next I create a support forum for the site.
From my limited understanding, no one would be allowed to do the following:
Post a URL to say, a website about a competitors toaster with a picture of said toaster.
Upload a picture of a competing brand of toaster from another site.
Say anything that was copyrighted such as, a christmas poem, or a famous quote from history.
Upload quotes from posted content anywhere else on the internet, or from a book, newspaper, written diary..
But forum users could do the the following ?
They would be allowed to upload a picture of themselves holding a competitors toaster..
Or upload their own words.
So, some questions:
How do you check uploaded content against the zillion TB of copyright data out there ?
Will every message/picture have to be moderator approved before being allowed to be posted ?
Possible loopholes...
Could you have your forum hosted in another country without that law, or would you still be liable ?
I guess one could just do telephone support like the shit companies do already..
"New computer game out"
*support only available via phone between the hours of 1pm and 2pm on a Tuesday..*
But if I put my support forums on say, a site like Facebook, then its entirely their problem to deal with ?
Or will the moderator of a group have any legal responsibility ?
Does this only apply to open public groups that anyone can join, or will this also effect private member only clubs ? (eg. closed non-public viewing forums.)
Suddenly I feel less and less like making and trying to sell anything if I can't support my customers easily and cheaply. (Read affordable..)26 -

Man I fucking love debugging Windows applications... OpenVPN dun shit the bed because the management interface is locked (on the Windows client I presume?) - so poke that error message into the Gargler along with "openvpn windows"... First result, OpenVPN forums. Excellent. ... Some dickhead in the forums: "this is the wrong forum, this is for Access-Server users, and you the user MUST have terminated the process".
Come fucking on! If only I could replace this fucking device with a proper OS already (and no I can't). Windows itself being a clusterfuck is one thing but the goddamn support around it. Atrocious!4 -

Newer PC, works fine if you unplug it, and plug it back in again, then when you reboot, it forgets its there..

I have this colleague that who is nice, but if you mention anything about (not complete) java, sun, vmware, windows, daus(dumbest possible user), car manufacturer your ears bleed with is rants about it.
For example:
We talked about BMW which published that the energy generated from recuperation of one of their cars is around 60%. Immediatly he rants that it its not possible and the calculated number of an forum user of the newssite who calculated that 90% of the kinetic energy is regenerated has no idea about the problems.
Sometimes its hard to endure the hate, but i can relate with him in some things.2 -
The first 30 minutes of a working day often consist of me saying, "who broke this then?" Then a liberal use of git blame.

Anyone else here getting annoyed of those people on forums that always have to start a "forum game"? We don't browse forums because we would like to play a game. At least I don't.

About 2/3 weeks ago had to deliver a college project where we were supposed to create a snake multilayer game on win32 API.

So apparently south korean maps are top secret and do not allow for styling in google maps:
"Yes , Korea does not support some features offered by Google Map due to national law. Google Map Korea can not be export map data for data centers abroad or including the ability to dynamically change the map image. Many South Korea Maps and services are limited to the domestic uses and Google is striving to make this a better service."

Ran into a problem, that I recalled also having a few years ago. Couldn't recall how I fixed it, but remembered that I struggled finding a solution back then. Got a good forumhit on Google straight away this time, exact same problem. It had one reply, by the initial poster a few days later, saying he found the solution and posting how he fixed it. Great! Love that some people actually post the solution when they find it themselves! Tried registering to post a big "thank you!", but got an "email already registered"-error. Hmm... Were able to login, then realized that the poster was...me, 3 years ago! So I guess "thank me!", then...?
TL;DR:
I almost thanked myself on a 3 year old forum post I didn't realize I had posted myself... -
Domain Drive Design question:
I am working on a simple case to teach how to apply DDD, my case is as follows:
Simple forum with Author, Moderator and Users.
I am using Dotnet core for this. I am not sure how and where I should implement authorization:
1. Author can edit his posts only
2. Moderator edits any post
In dotnet core, we handle roles, policies in the api layer, and its per endpoint, I have an identity layer which handles accounts, registering roles and policies in database.
But I'm not sure if I should or how to handle authorization based on permissions in application layer.26 -

I wanted to go full team red, but it turns out that the RX 5700 XT has a lot of driver issues.
I watched a hell lot of YouTube videos, benchmarks, forum posts, reddit, ...
Everyone is complaining about driver issues that haven't been fixed since the launch of the product.
That makes me want to go to team green and buy the NVIDIA 2070 SUPER GPU.
I post this as some sort of rant, but also as some sort of advice seeking post to double check my decision before I buy the 2070 SUPER.17 -

This might solve the issue..

updateorchestrator - Backup Scan
Was ticked to turn on my PC to do its thing..
Following advice here to install PSTools, I was able to untick the turn on bit, I didn't change anything else.

psexec.exe -i -s %windir%\system32\mmc.exe /s taskschd.msc
Will that fix it ?
And what does 'backup scan' do ?

Okay, so there's one guy in my class, which offends me for no reason (I don't give a f about that), and then few minutes later he comes to me and asks "can you make forum/launcher/website". So I say no, because I'm not gonna waste my time for free... So he offends me even more.
When I was telling "Sure, but that will cost you X PLN (Polish Nominals)" - he laughed.
This is really annoying.7 -
Sadly, I’m not a good enough developer to have clever and hacky solutions to anything. In college I did once use Visual Basic to spoof a Novell login screen and steal other students’ passwords and write them to a diskette, which I’d recover after they walked away from the machine. The worst I did to them was log into their messaging and send them messages from themselves. Oh, and I also set up an “underground” web site that the campus sysadmins didn’t discover for a while. I used it to set up a forum where students could sell their used textbooks for better prices than the buy back program at the campus bookstore.

For the fucks sake why doesn't githubs mobile version show the stars/forks on a repo? 😠
If I'm on github on a phone it means I clicked a fucking link so I want to see how many stars the repo has or star it myself for later.
Without the star rating I might as well search a forum for libraries because the main reason I use github is so that I can see how many people are using the code so I know it's going to be maintained in the future.
It's such a big oversight on a otherwise fucking awesome service3 -
My life has not been changed by coding ; technically, it has changed with an anime series I loved, Code Lyoko. While it was still airing, I joined some fan forum and met someone who's now my best friend. He helped me writing my "epic games" in Batch and taught me VB.NET.
Now, I think about most stuff in my life with more rationality and people sometimes ask me how they could optimize their time (I should try to tell them to bubblesort their shelves just to see their reactions).4 -
Fuck Love2d.
It has all these cutesy owo catgirl images and a forum that fits it too. When trying to fucking use it, I have to
1. import the image which isn't that big of a deal
2. create quads in a way that scans over the whole image in increments of x
3. create a thousand fucking spritebatches and store them all in a table so I can later alter them
4. somehow get that all right before I can even think of making a game that doesn't run like ass
Seriously fuck love2d and all its "Hi there! LÖVE is an *awesome* framework you can use to make 2D games in Lua" cutesy bullshit. Gamemaker 8.1, a more than decade old program at this point, is easier to use than this. If only it supported Lua. If only I wasn't fucking retarded and actually knew how to do this shit.12 -
Last night I was up until 3am because the fucking unity and the fucking Android SDK can't put together an structure without mi intervention.
It appears that since SDK 23 Google decided to move some libraries from tools to build-tools, but unity keeps trying to find that library in tools, obviously this error doesn't have any specific documentation and i spend around 5 hours downloading SDKs and trying to figure out what happen, till I found one tiny post in unity forum with only one answer.
I mean, on one side, this has changed since android 23 and the folks in unity can't change his fucking compiler yet, and on the other side, why the fuck Google change libraries from one place to another
Also, as a note to Google, your new system for SDK-only download its super shitty and full of problems, I don't know why you change it.1 -

Hey guys, could use some opinions. So I live in a country with a pretty small economy. I've been working at a big company out here for about a year now. Initially my plan was to work here for a year then apply for grad school in the states, try and use that leverage for one of those big us dollar jobs and potentially one of those magic green cards I've been reading about. I work about the equivalent of 35k/yr in my current position. It may sound pretty ordinary to some of you guys, but here it's a pretty huge salary. It's pretty hard to walk away from it. It's now becoming difficult to make the decision of giving up such a high salary, to make the time and money investment in school. Running the risk of spending a year or 2 in school and then not being able to work in the states. Putting the money aside i know that there'll be greater oppurtunity for learning and growth in the states, so it may be worth it for the experience alone. What do you guys think ? Take the risk? Stay safe in my job? look at other countries maybe ? I'm all ears.6

Let's increase my ram in my acer laptop. 1. It took me a week online to find out how many slots there are. 2. Then finding a manual with pictures for how to do it. No such thing. Technical manual from Acer? No such thing. I had to find a forum with one comment about my model.
There is no access to the location of ramslots. I had to completely unscrew everything because it's located at the bottom of the motherboard.4 -
I had a project partner that was clueless at programming even though she wanted to specialise in programming. So when I suggested that she use the internet to get suggestions for a game UI, she ended up copying everything off a forum.
The code wasn't even working, it had a different set of lib from ours and she spent 2 hours on that code wondering what was wrong.
I almost killed her for having a higher gpa than mine4 -
Fuck IIS
The documentation is crap. Most useful information is from forum posts from 2009. I just want a bit of customizable logging for fuck sake.5 -
I am on a forum that is mainly professional developers. The forum is specific to one library that is owned by the company that runs the forum. The participants are mainly volunteers as the project is open source. Most of the time it is great place to exchange experiences and help new comers to the library. However lately there has been a rash of shit posts about needing help with shit unrelated to the library.
I get it on some level, but come on people try to understand what the forum is about first. Don't bring your OS and hardware issues that have nothing to do with the library. Also, go fucking read the GPL/LGPL and any other license you have questions about. Seriously, if you want to be a developer you need to at least have an idea of what you can and cannot do. Software is an IP field. Learn what IP is and the rules to follow.
I was feeling like a jerk yesterday and started giving bogus answers to obviously unrelated questions. I know, not very pro like, but come on people! The guy was asking about monitor resolutions and changes since he updated his window manager. It was his first post on the forum. He was kind of sassy too. At least my state of mind at the time interpreted it that way...1 -
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THIS SHIT.
In my opinion, companies attention to detail is one of the main things that I use to determine how good they are and if I should use them. This kind of thing where the FUCKING ENGINEERS IGNORE THE ISSUE AND REFUSED TO FIX IT is what really pisses me off. At least companies like apple ship working products while Microsoft is sitting here on their asses trying to make the most money with minimal effort by screwing over their users and repurposing their Windows phone OS for use on laptops. Read: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...undefined fuck microsoft actual rant dumb interns engineers my ass fuck up windows attention to detail4 -
I seriously don't get what's with everybody trying to copy each other now so much and release something under a different name or description (e.g. chats were yesterday, we do high velocity communcation now) and or adding almost no features, doist (company behind todoist) released "twist", which is literally just slack or a forum, just worse...?
https://blog.todoist.com/2017/06/...
edit: they even show slack as the go to tool in the past, but didn't discover actual channels..? I am missing the point here completely2 -
I do not understand why you guys complains about Stackoverflow or even Arch linux forum. (There's a plenty of rant about those topic)
Those are just amazing, and of course, they will send you to the doc or downvote if you don't even do your job properly. I mean docs, google, other answer, wiki, tutorial, idk. There a plenty of resources where you actually can understand where's your problem. If after this you still don't have your answer, then ok ask it to the community because that why they exist.
But they aren't here just for repeating the answer that already exist and create double post, etc. Stackoverflow is one of the best source when you search on google because it's actually moderated nicely and guys won't hesitate to downvote you.
So if you got downvoted (Like I got sometime) then just think why was yours question/answer bad instead of just being angry against the community.
Ps: It's my first rant, but I was reading you guys since 1 year.3 -
That feeling when you realize that the REST API you were trying to consume apparently does not provide a query flag to get for a more detailed response making you think you'll need to fetch one list of items and then fire almost 1,000 requests really does not compare to that feeling when a colleague points out that the REST API in question does in fact support the flag AFTER you implemented the roundabout way.
FUCKING HELL!
I just didn't realize that I could click on GET and POST blocks for the metronome API documentation opening up a frigging pop-up. (See screenshot.)
Why couldn't the information have been more upfront? Only a cursor change on hovering the area could make one thing to click there.
Oh how I blame their lack of a user interface for my blindness.
I thought that it was just a basic documentation that only told you which endpoints exist and expects you to learn by trial of fire. So I searched the interwebs and on their support forum I found an old issue making me think that my round-about way was the way to go m(
Even worse, on the support forum I cannot even leave a comment warning the poor souls comming after me that they should not do the roundabout way as that issue has been long closed.

Ah, the joys of using a bleeding edge web framework! After updating a bunch of NuGet packages, I get the TypeInitializationException from hell. Googling the error message turns up void, because seems to be me and about a dozen other devs using this framework.
2-3 new threads per week in the support forum and mentioned in a total of 288 StackOverflow questions. It feels lonely using this framework, but the design is so darn promising...5 -

What is good practice for giving recognition to some ones tutorial/project when using elements in your own project?
F.i. I would like to demonstrate I gained certain skills, hence created a github project based on some vids/forum/else. I tailored the code to my own preferences, but the foundation is based on someone elses project. I am now listing these inspirational sources in the readme or comments. But is there a general practice for this?1 -
Doing the Full Stack Nanodegree from Udacity
Using Google's oAuth Sign in in my Flask App, I realized that no matter what browser I use, I was unable to logout, Google always threw an error my way. I figured something must be wrong with my code..
Searched on Google, couldn't find anything relevant, gave up on first 4 results(not pages, yeah I'm that lazy!)
Spent 3 hours Debugging at different points, removing all the abstraction I've put in using various libraries (Bad move)
Finally it dawned on to me to check Udacity forum as well. It's a frickin cache/cookie thing. Tried the app in an incognito window, worked like a charm. Reverted code back with all the libraries, worked like a charm again!
FUCK YOU GOOGLE! In your attempts to track users, you're even making our work difficult!

Now I've seen them all. Ticketing through OneNote. Each email was manually categorized by priority. They got around 20 emails per day. The responses, both from them and from the customers were one below the other, in sort of a forum model. Cool, not taking any more freelance jobs anymore. The money definitely doesn't make up for the amount of stupidity you come across with some people.

Fuck you mesa
I installed arch again due to some other mess up (another rant 😂) and this time I was facing problem with sleep.
The system froze every time I tried to wake it up from suspend state.
This is how I wasted past 2 days:
- Wifi device sleep issue, disabling wifi
- Probably sddm issue, let me try lightdm
- Last time I installed gdm, might try that as well
- Had to remove all the bloatware then I suspected plasma
- Checked system logs and found amdgpu error
- Tried disabling graphics using nomodeset, system failed to boot
- glx IP block hung!, it's the graphics driver
- Checked another arch forum, a guy was having a same problem after upgrade
- Downgraded mesa to 18.3.4-1
Worked like a charm though hibernate is still not working4 -

4) create analysis document with actual code changes without seeing the code (wait for step 8), post it on forum (no jira)
5) receive review on analysis document, fix it and post (no jira, redmine etc from now till the end of rant)
6) after analysis is approved make a checkout request
7) source code manager checkouts files from svn and posts them on forum along with the files list
8) you make actual changes to the code, post changed sources on forum
9) source code manager makes a review to check that amendment commet is present in source code and is properly tagged, and every line of code chnged is properly tagged (you are not allowed to delete anything, not even one space, you need to comment it (and put an appropriate tag))
10) after you passed review you fill in standard compilation request form
11) you code is compiled and elf is put on testing stand
12) you fill in "actual behaviour" and "expected behaviour" columns near description of changed function in template of unit test plan document (yeah we have unit testing) and post it on forum
13) if testing ok changed sources and compiled elfs along with its versions (cksum) commited to svn (not by you, there is a source code manager for that)
14) if someone developed function in same source file as you "commited" he is warned by source code manager and fills checkout request form again

I knew I wanted to be a Dev ever since I discovered that the Apollo missions, used a flight computer less powerful than a average mobile phone.
If they could put a man on the moon with that, imagine what I could do now... -

Is there a service, or forum, where you can ask people to try to break into your software for free?
Stupid as that is, I kind of want a beginner security guy to pen test my server. Eventually I'll shell out cash for a real review, but I'd like a lite one now. 😔15 -
Dreading the end of this bank holiday weekend, tomorrow I must wake up and return to working with legacy code.

Just spent 1 week following the upgrade tutorial from one framework to the next. Using their upgrade tool and following the documentation.
Finally finish the work, most things are working it just doesn't seem to work quite right. Must have missed something.
After some digging it turns out they completely removed a function that I rely heavily upon. No mention in the upgrade document, no possible work around. Every forum post about it either has no replies or it says "it's a new feature".
Well fuck you.
The whole project is now useless.

Back when I was at uni, we had this group project based on data security.
At the first sit down meeting we had as a team, this one guy sat down and said "to be honest guys I'd be happy with a pass (40-50%) for this module"...
Well great.2 -

Minecraft server, I was searching for a developer to build custom plugins so I wrote on a forum and he, Adam, replied saying he knew Java and he'd like to work with me.
I've chatted a lot with him, it's a really good friend!
In the same time I've started learning Java so I could help him, we're a team since 2015 :) -
Some wait for their codebto compile, others wait for their simulation to run... and then there's me... who just waits for an answer on his forum question....

Just got a bottle of baileys as a gift for acing my "end of high school" exams. I never had my own bottle before. How do you store these things? It has milk in it so I might want to put it in the fridge, but only if otherwise it's good for less than a week, because everyone else in the family also loves it so in the fridge it'll be empty within a week.8 -
DEVIANTS!! NEED ADVICE...
I have been focusing on learning and implementing data structures and algorithms through participating in competitive programming sites...
Whenever I face an issue and struggle to find an answer (which is more often than not), I ask the forum about the fundamental principles involved in the question...
I avoid looking at the solution, as much as possible.. And, when I do look at them, I still question the author of the code about the reasoning behind a particular section of code which I don't understand...
I don't wish to copy and paste code, but sometimes, I wait for days on end, but I don't use the code until I receive an answer...
Is this the right way or are there any other way which I could implement to strengthen my algorithmic thinking??10 -
!Rant, I have finally found a custom Android ROM that works on my phone. Thank you Rohan Purohit, You are a legend.

Just came across this on a forum while researching something:
"
Hello, sorry that I didn't check the TOS myself. I just had this thought and figured it'd be easier to parse for someone with the mental model already stored. I'm sorry if this is lazy, but promise I'll pay it forward.
"
As a dev, who frequently has to build FAQ's, Support forums, make sure T&C's get displayed again when changed etc etc. The above offends me to my very core.
So much so, I have been unable to continue researching, and now fixated on finding some way to make him regret his actions. -
What's wrong with reviving/bumping an old thread on a forum? It seems way more efficient to me to continue on one central thread. I hate common rules like "don't post in a thread that's a year old, start a new one". Why not keep the conversation in one place? What am I missing?
Isn't this already how we (properly) do email threads? I always go back to find the last email when I send a follow up to avoid breaking into two different threads with two different sets of replies.5 -
Discourse is a overly complicated software, could have been so much simpler without losing any of its feature. Installation sucks, development sucks and ofcourse their choice of using Rails sucks big time. Hoping Flarum will fix the issue of pathetic forum softwares.

I hate this modern fad of "composed" , "modular" extension/plug-in development. ALL I want to do is add two dropdowns to a phpBB forum, one for users and one for a single admin setting.
Guess what? I need TEN fucking files to make this extension work. Fuck your fucked dependency injection, fuck learning your whole bloody "ecosystem" (kill me already), fuck having a "tutorial" that doesn't explain what half the settings are...
It really drives me nuts that I have to spread my code over so many files to make this work.
That said, I don't really hate phpBB, but maaaaaaaan, making the simplest, dumbest thing is unnecessarily complicated.

What do you use for your side-projects regarding Anti-DDoS protection?
I have a community with 1-2k daily users hosted in Siteground. Currently, I am not experiencing any DDoS issues (mainly L4) but I used to when I was using another service provider. The trade-off is that the machine and the service I'm paying here is way more expensive.
I don't care about managing the server, but I was looking for a cheaper option to get my project with.
The stack is LAMP and it is an Invision Power Board forum.
What do you recommend? Which service(s) do you use for your projects and how do you prevent DDoS on your side?12 -
Do you think that is a good idea use the MEAN stack to create a forum/blog like if it were a REST API? Are there some libraries/frameworks that simplify this process that you consider useful?1

Rough start to the morning. Working with a partner in a Power BI scenario. He uses forums, over research, to find how to map IP to latitude/longitude. Naturally our mangager wants this done as short as possible so I stay back a few hours and get it done.
Show him this morning all the effort I put in to get it to work... He denies it's good enough and proceeds to tell me 'his way' of getting a forum 'genius' is easier and will work better, and refuses to hand in what we have done... Help 😰 -

Please ask your question on the forum , Stack Overflow or on gitter and are happy to help you out there.

guess what that dude did?
he post "PHP is the best language ever" on a dev forum
he got 10K reply in 10min, the gf said ok so be it let's do it.

at last he win the war but lost the sex1 -
AWS SDK is open source, but it is not actually open source. Found an improvement and proposed it on GitHub, but they have to change it in all SDKs and, by the way, it needs to change the API, which is not open source, of course. They suggested to post on AWS forum and I didn't get answer until now. Sad. :/

Any tips on how to promote a niche app?
From what I have heard, an effective way is to post it on a subreddit or some specific forum (like this). But since I hate it when other people do that and the chances are high to get banned for that, I am looking for other ways.8 -
I just wanted to say that most rants I saw today were great. Loads of original pics and good stories. This, while others think devRant is becoming more and more of just a repost forum. Any thoughts?1

Hey guys, ran into some thermal throttling issues with my i7-7700k (100c basically all the time, 800-2000mhz speeds) so I'm looking for a new cpu, anyone down to help?
I'm looking to run 1440p 144hz eventually so I don't mind laying down an average sum of cash for one, just need some suggestions.
Is it worth the switch to AMD? Every forum I look at online has someone buying AMD nowadays
I've tried fixing this i7-7700k by remounting the cooler, reapplying thermal paste, changing BIOS settings, making sure the pump is working, but nothing seems to help.82 -
Metatrader and its forum. I have asked a question 2 weeks ago, simple one. Just want to know how it calculates loss in backtest because it does not match my calculation. And nobody is answering. Then I go add comment to support thread, and my comment was deleted twice! wtf. And I cannot find in documention or in other forums my answer. Need to try stackoverflow maybe. In official forum they should know best. And it looks like it is active forum.6

This is a dev forum. If I find any competitive programmer ranting about timeouts. Imma knock him out.

I first started when I was about 7 or 8. I really wanted to become IT guy and a friend of my father recommended I started with Java. He lent me some books and a DVD. I had a pretty good understanding for variables and System.out.println(). But when it started to get complicated I got bored of it.
A few years later when I was 13 I got into ComputerCraft and started learning lua. I then attempted to make a game with lua + löve2d.
After a year I found on some forum that I could use Java to make games with Slick2D, so I learnt Java. Now, 5 years later I'm finishing high school with IT specialisation and I'm better at programming than some of my teachers. -

I hate those people that comment on threads saying shit like “just google it” or “oh fuck another [insert popular topic] thread we don’t need another one.” Fuck off. It’s an online discussion forum. If it’s shit content the mods will remove it, otherwise no one is forcing your sorry, lonely pathetic ass to stop scrolling, click the thread, and read the god damn post. Just fucking turn off your computer and read a book.2

Reading mp3 tags in python is not exactly easy. The code is only fifteen lines, but finding a module for the python version I'm using that's working on Windows (not using any modules, that are not Windows compatible) was pretty hard. It took me about 2 hours to get everything working. I used another module sometime before, but I couldn't even install it, don't know how I did that. And the forum posts that all suggested the same five modules, that didn't work for me, weren't that helpful either.

I had an issue with office 2016 add-ons crashing, apparently they use IE, so I looked online for this issue and landed on a Microsoft QA forum, where the issue was IE crashing. Some of the comments on that page were amaizing "IE keeps crashing, I really regret upgrading to Windows 10. I'm a really fustrated small business owner" <- that's just sad...

I always knew somehow, without realizing it. Since I was a kid I always was fascinated by technological stuff.
My parents are into humanistic fields so they couldn't give me any good input to understand what I liked exactly.
One day I learned I cpuld tinker with stupid batch scripts until I read on some forum the word "programming".
I was like "wtf is that" and googled the word.
In that moment I realized what I was going to do in my life. -
I think this is the best "forum" to meet people that is like u, I mean that has almost the same idea and that do the same thing. I love communities like this one!!!!!
And do u like my new avatar? -
Worst dev tech, it has to be MS Word. Apparently they follow the OOXML guidelines to create a Word doc but they have to put in their own shit-flavored ingredients to increase a developer's misery. Parsing that document is pure agony.
I was looking for a way to find the default font size of the document and found this gem https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/F... -
Dreamhost sucks. For a DECADE now people have posted the same issue on their community forum about how they cannot cannot send email from their iOS devices using the exact settings Dreamhost requires. Or they were able to intermittently but with no settings changes to explain why it stops working randomly. Yet Dreamhost continues to insist nothing is wrong on their end.
So I go to try and sign up to publish my own problem post. It says to check my email for an activation link. Nothing ever comes, not even to desktop Outlook even when it does work for other emails. -
Goddamn I've been fighting with unRAID lately, all to find out I've probably got a broken SSD. And to top it all off I've fucked up the other one so I had to reformat it. Sometimes when shit goes south, IT REALLY FUCKING GOES SOUTH. Fml.

Please Google fix my Chromebook's new tab screen as well as stop screwing up every single screenshot extension. I can't directly upload screenshots slowing down skype meetings. Why are you doing this to me? Your product forums (https://productforums.google.com/fo...) are treating me like I am an old lady who doesn't know what they are talking about. I do not understand what's so hard to comprehend. 1 Google Support Chat, 2 Feedbacks, 1 Debug Log Sent, Screenshots and everything yet you still fail. I have provided significant proof that there is an issue caused by you. Now please fix it because I can't since the Chromebook disables all code not signed by Google (unless you are in dev mode aka annoying screen + lose all security). You guys like hate me or something :(

Infineon infineon infineon...
Your aurix tricore is amazing for all safet systems... On paper.
Your support is abysmal. Tried forums, support line to verify a demo that only seems to work sometimes.
I just wanted to get ethernet communication using the demo. But hey one week gone and no success....
And the code seems to behave differently for each run :| the debugger works only on global variables and no printf statements. But hey just make a lot of globals right? So little footprint available so not possible :-\
Hoped that some forum could confirm the demo so I knew I was just making a fuck up, but cannot get that verified...
Embedded programming not for me... :/ -

Well, there is this one video online of some guy who made his own website out of PHP and MySQL (https://youtu.be/lomppRPkeFE) . Good old me didn't care about how we were both noobs that didn't care how cringey the site was. The site had so many vulnerabilities and looked so much like a 90s forum, I offered to help the guy out on a common quest to make an epic website. 2.5 years later and that quest is still in progress today. We actually remade the site too (https://www.novanius.com)1

You know, for the first time, I have had issues diagnosing an error (due to not having slept in about 75 hours due to the CEO slamming down on me to finish a project), and I posted on a forum. First time doing that, and they are fucking useless.
I may as well have delved into google and tries to diagnose the error. Done so, but you now what I find? People with the same fucking error, but no fucking resolution.
Stupid issue is a desktop support one, bloody Ubuntu won't install (gives me a shitty error and then loops back to installation post restart of my laptop. More than sure it has something to do with my graphics card).
Laptop decided to crash at the last moment, hence me installing Ubuntu again. Fucking errors, fucking help forums not helping, and fucking tiredness. On the plus side, coffee has kept me going longer than I thought. -
