You know you are a senior developer when you go to stackoverflow with only goal to answer questions.5

Yesterday, I had a meeting to prepare today's meeting, which goal is to prepare tomorrow's meeting... 😣7

Manager: How come the push to prod didn’t happen?
Dev: We told you at the scrum yesterday. To reiterate, our dev environment was crashing so it’s not safe to push to prod until that is fixed.
Manager: Ok well lets set a goal to fix that and push to prod happens today so that it guaranteed happens.
Dev: That was our goal yesterday and it definitely didn’t happen.
Manager: I AM AWARE OF THAT. The corrective action is that this time compliance with the goal is 100% ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY!!
Dev: We’ll do our best, can’t guarantee anything until we figure out what the nature of what is occurring on dev though.
Manager: NO. I AM THE BOSS. YOU WILL 100% ABSOLUTELY COMPLY WITH THIS. THAT IS AN ORDER. YOU WILL SUCCESSFULLY GET THIS UPDATE OUT TO PROD TODAY. ANYTHING LESS THAN THAT SHALL BE CONSIDERED INSUBORDINATION. I WANT STATUS UPDATES EVERY 15 MINUTES ON WHERE WE ARE AT WITH THIS.
Dev: …
Dev: Can I get you to send me that request in an email?
*Manager leaves the meeting*

Job search is ticking along. It’s tough going though because I currently make ~120k and the best offers I’ve received so far are all ~70k because “You only have 2 years experience so you couldn’t possibly have the skills to be worth 120k. You are are junior level developer and 70K is already overpaying for you. We can pay you more later™. No we will not give you that in writing”. Ah well, the hunt continues.17 -
That's it. I am going to learn HTML. Like really, really learn it.
And after that, I am going to learn CSS. Like fully, totally learn it.
Nah .. I am fine.8 -
Many have python learning as their 2018 goal, well theres a 15$ huge humble bundle for python machine learning, networking, rest, pen-testing and more, its a good deal, check it out.46

Goal for my dev career future?
I'll soon be 53, my career goal is to make it to retirement without fired for some random biz-talk excuse for being too old.11 -
The goal of one of my CS assignments was to learn about makefile, and during the last minute - literally while I was waiting for the professor to come over - I was just making everything presentable and getting rid of noise. I figured putting rm -r *.* in clean would be a good way to get rid of all the debug output.
To be fair, my project folder was indeed pretty clean afterwards.7 -
To paraphrase Jeff Atwood: everything you write sucks. The goal of programming is not to write great code, but to writes code that sucks less each time you write code.
-
New programming language alarm!
The V Language sets the goal to compete with Rust and Go. It's main advantage is appearantly it's efficiency and speed. You can build a basic web server with only 65kb file size.

Programming is a lot like playing video games. It challenges you to beat quests/tasks and hunt enemy bugs while providing boss levels in the form of large projects with tight deadlines and project managers who like to move the goal posts.4
-
What if the long term goal of @trogus and @dfox is to create a developer army, hell bent on the destruction of project managers and clients everywhere (except the cool ones).
I mean I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Just wanted to... You know.... Raise some attention.3 -
I'm just realizing recruiters are willing to buy you lunch. New goal: eat for free every Friday until the new year...5

2020 dev goal.
To build a 10 inch laptop using a RPi 4 (4GB), so far I've come to the conclusion that it will be self powered with a solar power battery pack, a HDMI screen and a full size 104 key keyboard with trackpad or just a mouse if it's to large.
The case I'm currently staring at a pile of lego going 🤔🤔🤔 this could probably work.1 -
The goal of 2018 is to contribute to at least 100 open source repositories at GitHub and maintain the track record.10

Hey guys I posted back in October that I was starting a hobby that I've always wanted to do making programming related videos and tutorials with a lofty goal of hitting 20 subs by end of the year and you all blew that goal in 24hrs! That sudden support really excited me to do more and I want to say thank you!
Now that it is released l really wanted to make a tutorial over the new Google Assistant API and it is now officially released this month. I'm hoping to make a multi-part series over developing for the assistant and Google home plat form. I'd really appreciate your support and feedback on how I can improve my channel and possible video topics you would might like to see.

Thank you for your support DevRanters as always!8 -
Ubutu's organization is so slow in the Code-in contest.
I mean, I've been waiting for 17 hours and they still didn't accept or decline my submission for the second task.
I can't claim another task until they accept this... Plus, my goal is to be one of the finalists, so if they don't hurry up then it won't happen.11 -
Super exited! Been thinking for a while now about getting back to software development (worked couple year as dev in my teens decade ago and since then have been in completely different field of work).
Finally made some effort towards my goal and applied for a position nearby.
After four rounds of interviews and tests, I got the job! Awesome!2 -
I'm starting my first real/big project! I'm going to program a discord bot for my senior project with Python and I'm gonna have to do it in 25 days. the goal is to get it done in 15 and polish it more from there.4
-
Just a reminder.
If you've been coding/studying/working/dealing with shit/stressed out/mentally broken/dead from the inside/fighting for your goal and not working out and so on all year long.
Take.

My one goal is to build something that lets me stay at home with my lil girl all day. Have been thinking about my own company for a while, there are 2 software companies in town with very weak tech stacks. I know I am better and can do better. So my goal is to build my own company and hire enough people to take care of it while I spend more time with my daughter. I get sad when I have to drop her off at the daycare while me and the wife have to go to work. All I want to do is be with my family.11

Supervisor: Work with this Image Processing Library to "RECOGNIZE" objects from the phones camera.
Me: Wuuuuuh....?
Supervisor: Also it should be in real time and can't use internet.
Me: But that's impossible....
Supervisor: Align your goals with the company's goal. Nothing is impossible......(gets all motivational)
Me: 😩🔫15 -
My biggest goal as a developer is to build a few services which provide enough passive income that I can spend more time with my family.4

Just a random thought.
If you are going to remove the headphone jack in phones because your goal is to make it slimmer, we'll why not put two USB c ports? One for charging and other actions, one for other actions only13 -
There's this insurance chain in the US that says its goal is to save America $500 million, so for their ads they ask a bunch of kids what they'd do with $500 million. What they neglect to mention...14

A new producer started to pick up where the previous guy had rage quit. He looked at our sprint plan and announced it.
"According to this schedule, by these estimates, to hit our goal we have to somehow all work 27 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the next month."2 -
My boyfriend and I just got home from a seminar and had a nice teachings and talks. As the speaker ended the talk, she asked each participants as to what is our ultimate goal.
G1: to be an able lawyer
B1: civil engineer!
B2: to pass the licensure examination
BF (God's Gift): businessman
Me (mind): Gray hat
Me (...): to have a start-up tech company
Since college, I really wanted to have a start-up company in due time. ^_^1 -
Make your dream as your wallpaper, so that it reminds you not to stop until you make that dream into reality.6

Did you know that talking about your goals actually decreases your chances of reaching them? It's a form of social validation. Talking about them and receiving praise from your peers in a sort of mini-goal which could replace the actual goal so you are less motivated to actually go for the real goal. Best of luck anyway! May the odds be ever in your favor when facing procrastination😂1
-
I have many stickers on my laptop, need some more to complete the selection. Would love to see devRant on here! Help me reach the goal? Suggestions as to what else to add?8
-
Articles 13 and 11 pass exactly during the world cup, so news channels won't report on it coz they're too busy showing Ronaldo's goal for the 376th time9

Lately, ALL social interaction at an office is awkward and filled with tension. NOBODY knows what is allowed to be said when EVERYONE seems to be “triggered” by everything. So conversation is riddled with mea culpas, walking on eggshells, and equivocations and very little of any interesting substance is discussed. I’m making it my goal to always be remote in any job, but even the Slack and Zoom interactions are stupid.20
-
I am currently in a bit of a (well-deserved) lull at work, both of my projects are finishing up/ finished, so tomorrow should be pretty light, as the latter half of today was.
And I have really gotten interested in the HTTP protocol. It's so interesting learning how it all works under the hood.
So I think I'm going to be researching/ messing around with creating a cpp project that essentially implements cURL from the ground up, creating sockets, reading from them, parsing the HTTP requests... all that. I don't expect to actually get it done, but it should be an immense learning experience. I have a clear goal: implement this function:
std::string get(const std::string&);
Once I'm able to just GET as simple as that, I know I have achieved my goal!3 -
C: “Look, I agree that these are likely leading practices, but we really don’t need all that.”
M: “These aren’t even leading practices, these are the bare minimum practices to help ensure secure login sessions and that account passwords aren’t trivially compromised.”
C: “How do I put this...? You’re trying to secure us against the hacker. That’s a noble goal. But my only concern is the auditor.”
M: “...”2 -
Just noticed:
In every programming language, your first goal usually is to write "Hello World".
Except for php. There "phpinfo();" is the equivalent of that.2 -
A free, open source, modular (plugin based) home automation control center.
Ultimate goal is to support the core / apis and other devs code the drivers for the 'IoT' devices.
Also integratable with all the speech assistants like Amazon Echo, Google Assistant, Cortana etc.
Not that money dependent but very time consuming project.
Im starting in a week tho!4 -
You came to me with a problem, and I have the solution. I'm working with you to achieve a goal not for you.
I don't need you, you need me.
I've been using the above statement for a little over two years. Has been working pretty well. Might not apply to or help everyone but it sure helps me.3 -
It has sated my hunger for never-ending knowledge.
It allows me to freely express myself.
It has given me the goal to surpass all these people who are better than me.
Also unlimited anger that can end me up behind bars. -
From a buddy:
A friend's comment on the latest merge conflict on the integration branch:
"O brachName! my branchName! our fearful sprint is done,
The build has failed with every merge, the goal we sought not won,
The release is near, the worst I fear, would Product be exulting?" -
Thank you all for helping me to my first real goal, 1k! Thank you all! Love this community so much! Let’s continue that.5
-
Crushed my first week at the new job. I'm not a software engineer yet, but it's a QA job with a fair amount of test automation, so lots of programming and another step toward my goal.1
-
2022 Dev Goal: Find a way to retire early so I never have to build another website or write another line of code again. It’s been over 25 years and I’m just done and over it.11
-
Ugggg FUCK YOU if you are one of these people who says “My goal is simple” and then you proceed to ramble on about some elaborate and poorly defined goal! Just go figure it out! FFS.4
-
Engineering managers will say things like -
- "I'll let the team decide what's best for them" & "code quality is our primary goal" -
but then they'll shoot down any & all requests to go back to some old piece of code and refactor/clean it, because of "deadlines".
Hypocrites, all of them.3 -
Dog barks. Then the other dog barks. Then the lady who owns the dog starts yelling at the dogs. She's yelling and they are barking - and they get louder and louder. What was the goal again? Oh yeah... this is just how agencies work. Go with it. The goals don't matter.2
-
Let's invent a new coding paradigm. Its goal is to make code as it naturally really should be: Ugly af
See the current list of rules in the description14 -
So I've realized how socially awkward I am. I've had a goal for a few weeks now to get a few new friends online a few in 2 different categories. Programming friends, and foreign language friends but it's so hard and I dont know how to initiate it on social media or on shit like discord and reddit8
-
My goal is simple:
Make a shit ton of money, buy companies, fire all the devs ruining our profession.5 -
Priorities:
1. Work
2. Eat
3. Save money
4. Do less of #1
5. Do more of #4
6. Sleep
7. Talk to people
7a. Nevermind - stretch goal4 -
I've never coded (for work) on vacation. I just turn off my work laptop and my work phone. So I can spend the first week of back to work for going through my email & messages.
I'm not irreplaceable and I work with competent people. (At least that's my goal at work.) -
Do you guys think that in terms of a design, we're in a refresh loop?
Like, I don't think the goal of a design is to be user friendly and optimal for all human eyes. There's a million ways sideways to achieve that.
I think the real thing most designers go for is to just make something look "new". And every few years that needs to be redone. Forever. In an infinite loop.
Fuck actual usability, thought-out layouts, contrast rules, what-the-fuck ever. 99% of the goal is to make it look "modern"10 -
I am going to start a new podcast next month. It will be called TechWiz, and the goal is to teach you how tech works inside and out. The first episode will be released sometime in January and come out each month.6

Lets all write one line of code without having a goal. Lets see what we will come up with in the end.
Use C++11.
The code has to be correct from a syntax standpoint. Also, no sigsevs, please :P
Ima start with the first line:
#include <iostream>34 -
Switch your tech stack or programming language or development framework to something that you enjoy more.
If it requires to switch the company, do it!
If it requires to learn something new and you think that you don‘t want to, then it‘s probably the wrong goal.4 -
Damn Google.
"hey my company I like diversity, and agree with our goal but think we are punishing people for voicing an opinion that we could accomplish our values of nondiscrimination using better methods"
Googles Response "we encourage diversity including diversity of opinions. All employees should be safe to talk about these things. Oh and FUCK you man you're fired we don't agree with you standing up and voicing a differing opinion"3 -
Can't say fuck off to all the guys saying good morning when you arrive in office. Nobody really means it. It gets irritating some times. :(14

Tonights goal, boot fuchsia on my old Pixel 2 XL... Wish me luck!
(Please prepare yourself for some very drunken posts about a bricked phone)6 -
My goal was to hack the game to increment a random byte of memory every frame if SELECT was pressed. Mission accomplished!
(Done with ASM hacks, not recompiling from the pokeblue disasm)1 -
My goal in life as an android man: convert every single person I can from Samsung or iPhone to either pixel or Nexus
Converted 3 so far and they all say they won't go back to modifed Android or iOS :-D14 -
I felt like being the cause for “that dreaded legacy code“ and wrote 250 lines of C preprocessor macros for generating bitfields in a large header file automatically, with the goal of simplifying and clarifying register access for all peripherals in the end. Then, I found out that SDCC's optimisation for bitfields is absolutely awful (if existent at all), and I don't really want to use these abstractions if they have a performance impact.
Did I deserve that?7 -
My family had no particular reaction. I wanted to be a programmer since school, and they knew it was my intended goal.
I guess, my uncle being a professional programmer was something that showed it is a good choice.4 -
My dev goal is to actually finish something this year, last year I started a load of projects but left them unfinished2

The biggest joke on mankind is that a computer program is asking human to prove that they're not robot.

Goal for my dev career future?
Start my own company that hopefully makes enough money to make me financially independent and lets me live the life I want.4 -

The mysterious life of developers
CLICHE DEVELOPER - which can be spotted by the conference t-shirt and the pale skin. Main source nutrition black carbonated liquid.
HIPSTER DEVELOPER - this species only drinks warm liquids based on expensive spices and beans, and his only tool is a so called Macintosh.
for many individuals in the herd it's considered prestigious to not utilize the mouse at all.
The herd works towards a common goal, a goal set by the project owner. When the project owner arrives the developers often hide digital image of cats from their screens........

I will reiterate my goal of 2020 and 2021:
Finish my personal project and bring it to market!
It will happen this year, I swear! 🤣2 -

We just got a new web dev with 10+ years experience with the goal of helping out our rather inexperienced small team.
His first PR was for a rather large form with 30+ fields.
He. used. a. <table/>......To layout the entire thing! With inline floats no less!
How the f do you spend the last 10 years not bothering to pickup any modern css?6 -
Got an interview call from one company yesterday. They wanted to know how much active are mine GitHub and Stackoverflow accounts. When I asked how much time they give to employees to promote open source and community work, they didn't had any answer. Seriously? Wtf. At least don't ask if you don't promote open source and community contribution.2
-
I was in a good mood until I read this weeks dev-question. I'm now having an existential crisis. Why do I do this? What's the end goal here? I don't know what my biggest dev career dream is. Maybe I should get a dog and live in the mountains. I think, I need another moment...7

"Your goal should always be, working on building things so tomorrow you don't have to worry about them... If you are being repetitive its time to reevaluate"

Now my only goal is to obtain enough points on this app that I might trick out my profile picture and get it printed to the custom sticker.1

One of my girlfriend's goal is to learn whatever web development languages I know and help me work on projects. I can't express how happy I am, I just hope this doesn't go badly though. :/3

2018 goal:
Learn to write code, and make a lot of money, and live a happy life, and hopefully my mom will love me again, and...3 -
My goal before week 200 is to get people to agree that we need some nice polo shirts with devrants graphics on it.2
-
Definitely to finish my thesis. I now force myself to do at least a small part per day. At some day it will be such a natural part of my day that it will just write itself (hopefully).
But wk200 is a little late goal, I want to finish it this year ~wk130
Never give up, people. -
My goal for 2019 is to write an efficient neural network library with streams and make it very very very customizable. I'll write in C#, cause fuck python script kids. My idea is to make a cool platform for new ideas8

He he he!
Matching software version and vulnerabilities in NIST then exploiting it is not HACKING !
I wanna find new zero day vulnerabilities that no one ever noticed before!!5 -
A lot of people posting their goal is a higher salary. So my goal will be to: create a program of value that enables me to collect a percentage of your higher salary.
Why thank you very much!2 -
Im sitting here in a train and a guy two seats in front of me is carefully examining a ReSharper cheatsheet with shortcuts etc...
Do one of you ever print a cheatsheet with as goal to learn it from the top of your head while you are not behind a PC?11 -

Got my stickers earlier than expected, need to find a way to use 'em. Thank you David and Tim.
Next goal: 200++'s to get the stressball.1 -
- Be me, developing mobile game
- Make the following goal, coz project is very important.
- plug phone to laptop for testing.
- phone gets charged
- phone doesn't die for 2 days, fuck you ain't getting any entertainment forever1 -
Dev goal: finishing my lightweight webserver in c++ so there's no need for apache or nginx and I can finally add logic to my webpages without php.
And finishing all my other personal projects obviously :D1 -
Definitely not a rant.
After the OpenGL ranting (here and by myself), I wanted to share with you my joy to have achieved a little goal:

My TARDIS is spinning and moving into space!1 -
My goal for 2019 is to finally get into game development and release my first game on itch.io!
Also I want to finish a few side-projects, as always...1 -
My goal as a intern achieved, my dream of being able to understand 113,000 lines of code for their website priceless.2
-
My goal is to find the motivation to make a MVP for a company idea I have. The chances are low but not non-existent....1
-
I want to stop for a while, leave the city and go live somewhere quiet. Grow my own food and raise some cute chickies. Then I'll probably miss coding, but definitely not the corporate hellholes I worked and still work for. This is obviously not a goal for this year but my wish for before I turn 40.
-
Guess you guys don't care about goals like "losing weight" and that stuff. So my code-related goal is MASTER VUE.JS ONCE AND FOR ALL. Seriously, I need to start using it in production or I will keep wasting my time.2
-
Optimizing JS is such a pain. like, the total runtime of the rest of the code is not measurable compared to DOM operations, so the goal would be to optimize DOM access, but there are zero resources online on the relative cost of certain operations, and I get the feeling that they don't have much in common across browsers.2

The following paper combines recurrent neural nets for vision with methods from reinforcement learning research:
https://proceedings.neurips.cc/pape...
Apparently an agent learned to catch a ball 85% of the time, without being explicitly told to track the ball. The RL algorithm rewarded the agent *only* for successfully catching the ball. The system itself used this reward signal to set its *own* policy/goal, which was used to guide it toward the goal of tracking the ball itself--all on its own.
Behold, the very infancy of the paperclip maximizer problem.3 -
Get a better job and move out to Austin, TX; the next step towards my goal of one day starting my own company!1

Dev Goal : Fix the bugs you said you will solve in 2015, but are still open,
Because you know what fix to do,
And you are too lazy to do it.
And too busy, creating half baked, hacky fixes for new exciting problems.
:D -
Not strictly a dev-goal, but anyway:
Now that I am responsible for a few people in the company I work for, my goal is to find a balance between managing and dev, and to help them develop their skills, be productive, and enjoy their work. -
Personal Opinion:
If you/your company's goal is to achieve micro-services, kubernetes or any new shiny technology, then you are thinking it wrong.
These tools are a means to an end. They should be a solution to an issue you are facing/will certainly face. They should not be your end goal.5 -
10 Signs You Picked the Wrong ISP !!
10. Their company logo: two tin cans and a length of string.
9. You check out their address, and it's a phone booth containing a Compaq portable and an acoustic coupler.
8. Their chief technical officer lives in a 10-foot-by-7-foot shack in the woods.
7. Their proud boast: "We've been on the Internet since it was CB radio."
6. Their promo materials use the words "information" and "superhighway" in the same sentence.
5. You order an SLIP/PPP connection, e-mail, and 2MB of server space for your personal Web site, and the voice on the other end of the phone asks, "Would you like fries with that?"
4. "As seen in Better Business Bureau special reports."
3. "Access speeds up to 9,600 bps in most areas."
2. They hawk both domain names and Rolexes on street corners.
1. They charge by the word.2 -
My goal for the rest of the year and into the new year is to not procrastinate learning/practicing front-end and back-end development.1

Every layout goal must take hours of frustrating intuition-destroying trial and error, followed by documentation cross-examination, MRE building, upstream bug-filing, and workaround pursuits.
https://jsfiddle.net/uz5dr8h4/21/
But no, CSS doesn't suck, you're just bad at it.6 -
the usual: suffer in the name of curiosity.
all jokes aside, my goal is to finish several projects and take a long-ass break from it all to fix this burnout, and maybe even find a job somewhere in there too? hopefully? stretch goals? -
Sad to say, but StackOverflow became a worse place after the *everyone is welcomed* goal. I see way more stupid questions and 2010-like questions getting +3 votes. Wth2
-
88 hours on the clock
Take one more, pass it around
89 hours on the clock
Maybe my goal next week should be to clear 100 😂5 -
Python async is a total, unapologetic shitshow. It’s as if the design goal was explicitly to invalidate the maximum number of thoughtful stackoverflow QAs possible. Pro tip: make you sure to memorize the release dates of every minor version of python from 3.5-3.10, so that you know which stackoverflow answers are not relevant in any way to your codebase.2

LFS Update: Well I fixed my perl issue last night and today my goal is to do a bit of level grinding so to speak on LFS by trying to finish ch 6. I'm a little over halfway through so I only got about 40 more packages to compile from source 😄
-
So I just read the Blink to "Poke the Box" and one question it raised was.
If you had no obstacles and unlimited resources (I guess like if you could retire right now and do anything you want), what would you do?
For myself I couldn't really think of something/a goal/big project that would keep me interested...
(I vaguely remember maybe there was a Weekly Rant about this...)4 -
So I'm gonna finish my interpreter. No matter how much fucking work it is to implement a proper cross platform terminal library, because all the existing ones suck. I'm gonna write a debugger for it.
And then I'm gonna learn to play the ukulele.
And I'm going to start a new project that may actually make me a good sum of money.
This is the plan. If I don't do this then literally fuck my life, I might aswell jump off a bridge because I can't fucking do anything12 -
So I found a course that shows how to make purely procedural animation for characters. The demo on youtube was pretty amazing. It is like 9 hours of coursework. I am expecting some good information from this. The course is for Unreal 5. I intend on extrapolating the relevant data to use with Godot.
I started watching the videos and everything is being done in blueprints. Not sure what I was expecting. The goal is to do procedural animation in Godot. The logical place to start is to install Unreal 5 so I can learn the blueprints and transfer that knowledge to Godot. Kinda funny. Yet another launcher I "get" to install.
The goal is reduce the artwork pipeline. If I can rig characters correctly I am hoping I can share animation procedures and not have to spend hours keyframing animations. Also, code that moves stuff is cool. I genuinely want to know how to make that work. No idea if the goal is achievable.

The ultimate goal of every developer:
You are so good that the bug of your app is seen as a feature by users 😎6 -

Hey everyone. I am a freshman in college studying Cyber Security. I have been practicing various programming languages such as httml, css, java script and SQL. Does anyone have any recommendations for resources to study? My end goal is to be blue teaming for my schools Cyber Defense team in the fall.5

I spent the majority of my afternoon trying to find a good site to help me improve on my coding but they all seem the same. I'm tired of switching sites and going all through the basics that I already know again and again. I need a project! Some sort of goal or maybe just switch languages.7

Every time I read something on computer (which I haven't previously come across), I can't figure out whether it's a l ( small case letter L) or a I (capital case letter l). Worst case is working with passwords. :(4

Just had a meeting about what our product's vision was going to be. Without actually talking about what that vision was. It was a statement of the business goal amd some nonsense about how we were going to pick tickets based on reaching said business goal.
Like, yeah. That's what we have been doing. You are not new here so why are you acting like it. And yet these people are the ones who make more money than me. I need to start saying more obvious things. Maybe I'll be made a director.4 -
Just updated the app to use the avatar builder, now I have a goal in life, get enough upvotes so I can get my avatar some slippers, I love coding in slippers or bare feet

I was working for a project with one of the project managers. Despite several discussions, he was not ready to have provisioned for procurement of couple of extra drives for database backups. Also because it's always how they worked, developers were allowed to make changes to the production databases directly.
Since I knew it was going to be burning some day, despite his negligence, I ran a script to take full database backups every night, compress, and remove old backups all to do in the drives we had on server. Sat it automated using scheduler.
One day it happened that one of the junior developers deleted one major table taking whole production down. Next thing you know everyone went crazy. Since I felt bad for the managers and users, I was able to restore database using backup from last night.
You know who jumped in first before senior management to take credit of all this and got some nice kudos..that project manager. Also, you know who got burned..it would not be a rant if I did not got schooled for not following on the wisdom of project manager.
Anyways, we are still not taking database backups (as per project manager) -
Incoming 5G-network's coverage is being resolved with natural ways
Finnish communication agency is figuring out ways to install mobile mini cell towers to moose and deer. The goal is to enhance network coverage in low density living areas. Safety of the network would be ensured with injections and deworming. Prototypes have been tested with voluntary public servants, and the results have been promising.4 -
Spend about half the day fixing a bug. Whilst reporting it complete on our ticket system, QA change the ticket's expected outcome. Ffs.

So I have been setting goals for my interaction with people on devrant. I had the goal of getting someone to spray liquid out of their mouth in response to something I posted. I believe I had one person self report on this (maybe two). My next goal was getting someone to shit their pants in response to a post. I figured with @b2plane here my chances were a lot higher. As of Nov, 2024 nobody has reported on this. That goal still stands.
Maybe some new goals for this next upcoming year should be:
1. get someone to rage quit (not sure this in a good goal)
2. get someone to "dad splain" to me
3. triggered downvotes (I have had some in the past, so this is a recurring goal)
4. inspire anti-posts (some of you are natural inspirers it seems, respect)
5. actually create funny memes (maybe not possible, shitposting will continue though)
Does anyone have ideas for some good edge lording goals?10 -
I started building a voxel engine with openGL and Clojure during December, so my goal is to make a game out of it. Long way to go but seems fun.1

Why? Well that's my goal...3 -
My goal for 2020: actually finish a personal project.
Last year, I built 25% of a website, 10% of a companion app for a video game, and half of a command-line utility. I would really like to finish an entire project this year, but considering that I just started a new project that promises to be huge and unwieldy, that will probably have to wait for whatever project I try next after burning out on this one.1 -
What was the path like to get to your current position?

I clearly define the day's goal, get beverages/snacks ready, get my hair out of my face, take my glasses off, answer any remaining email, take a deep breath, and dive in.
Sometimes I'll listen to music, but it depends on the ambient noise level. -
Watching YouTube and reading the documentation.
Preferably with a practical goal (e.g. a software that does something). -
When the project manager complained about how you are late for the deadline, but the keep on adding on new requirements unrelated to the initial goal. OTL

My goal is to study for 300 hours (coding problems, behavioral, and system design combined) before I start applying for companies.
Is this overkill? Is it enough?
I put a "stop" on my studying since I know there will always be a question that's a "got-ya" or some extremely hard Leetcode question that require some obscure algorithm from college that had 1 figure about it.5 -
Introducing Jungla.
Jungla is an alternative to GraphQL with some unique features.
The goal of Jungla is to have the freedom to structure your results the way you truely want, on the fly.
Rather than defining your schemas before the requests like in GraphQL... Jungla can be entirely defined in your request, or implemented server side for quicker request times.

Just thought the other day of something: AI devs are developing what will make their job useless, as AIs will be able to do programming. AIs will probably take over each and every job and we won’t have to work anymore.
They’ll eradicate diseases and we’ll live for quite a long time. When the basics needs will be completely fulfilled, their goal will be to make of the world a human paradise, with the goal in mind of making us happy and have no worries.
Then they’ll make it to the next level and plug us to a virtual world. It’ll be a paradise, an utopia and it will probably be like the 1st Matrix...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or it may just not happen, but can we be sure of that… I’ve always laughed at people saying technology will end humanity, but now I realize that killing all of us is not the only way to end the humanity …7 -
Goal for 2019
- finish project I started in Q4 2018 and launch website with it
- maybe find some non invasive way to monetize this and earn some money
If I got time and power left :
- learn more autodesk fusion,
- design robotic arm using above tool
- print it in 3d
- program it with ROS arduino/rpi
- put it on some wheels
- make it driving around my flat
- make it pick up stuff for me -
Not sure if it still counts as a 'dev' goal but for 2o19 I'd like to finally stop being a 'ooh, this is a mess, I can fix this..just one more thing and I'm done for today' person. Even my bosses tell me to go home already, so I hope this year I will be able to do just that: turn my head off and go home, do other things in life I also love.2
After a big part of the day spending in Angular i decided to do something else. I went studying a bit on how to increase conversion. Partially because this was the main goal of the webdev team in the coming months. The UX designer saw it and told me if he where me he would study more code and scripting.
Like dude. Wtf. Im doing this for 1 in the 8 working hours. Get off my back asshole.1 -
I'm developing a game for about 3 months, and currently looking for partners.
After a 3 hour fight with a custom Ajax request I have won the fight of getting a limiter run on the output. My goal was to only display x amount of result from a Json response and I finally got it working by putting everything in a if statement. Might not be the cleanest way but it works.
I believe that in 2018 I have learned a lot but haven't used that knowledge to the maximum. So my 2019's main goal is to use things that I've learned or currently going to learn. Along with that I want to see people grow together, so mentoring people is another goal that I have in my mind. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or idea regarding this, that would be very much helpful.
Very Happy New Year to all. -
Currently working on a distributional semantics database or something like that. The goal is to read natural language texts and construct a graph of words, with directed edges containing the relative distances between them. Then I want to enter one or more words and find all of the possible words which could be used before, after or in between those words, simply based on the previously learned texts. Then I want to find words which are used in similar contexts and build a kind of dictionary that way.
The end goal is to use this to define software or other states and procedures, using natural language.
What do you think of this idea? Can you imagine it being feasable for its purpose? What are your thoughts?3 -
So, my goal for 2023 was to survive it without a burnout. I spent 8 months on sick leave with nearly constant migraines (approximately 25 days a month, episodes lasting the whole day). I guess I'm kinda wondering did I succeed in my goal or not...?3
Client demo today..
Did lots of configuration stuff in this sprint and when talking through it I confuse even myself.. so many things that were done for one specific goal..
They will be confused during the whole demo, only in the last 2 min it will start to make any sense - when all the pieces come together.
It’ll be fun..4 -
On a past project, every sprint planning was the most unproductive meeting. We were expected to fix all open bugs each sprint, so there was literally nothing to plan. How do you prioritize when the goal is “do everything”? 😂
Am I the only one who loves documenting their work? I mean I just absolutely love making Github gists, man!
It helps in the backend-frontend integration and in communication between teams that is necessary for frictionless progress towards our common goal.6 -
So i keep thinking why don't people make reminders of a goal they want to follow.I mean i use it all the time it helps me be more organised.
** Do remember i am a NOOB in web Dev and would like to get better**
++// Any suggestions are greatly appreciated //++
So i came up with a Web App where
" we enter something we want to set a goal based on and the time duration we want it to run it for."
What's the best part " reminder is displayed in terms of a calendar with some animation (where we click on the date to show that we have lived up to that goal for that day)"
The page would also have a counter like a clock which would tell the user who has logged in if or not they are Procrastinating or actually following their set goal. -
My new goal is to get a great af job but still appear as open and looking online so it'll be turn to fuck with recruiters and waste their time3
Afraid of setting a new goal because as soon as I do I probably wont work towards it. I have this rebellious habit of not doing what I set out to some times. It really stunts my progress and is just flat out irritating.5
Why is it that whenever I have a goal, everybody comes out of the woodwork to tell me I'm stupid and am not capable of achieving it, but whenever I do achieve something on my own they expect thanks and recognition for all the "support and guidance" they gave along the way?
Surely this can't be just me experiencing this?2 -
Which is a good platform for dedicated servers, privacy-wise, and if possible (but it's not my primary goal) not too heavy on my wallet? I had a splash of inspiration. I would like to develop a method for analyzing unknown bitstreams of data. The method would involve determining the format of the data by trial and error machine learning algorithms. This would allow determining data types and byte formats and meanings of streams of data. Could be useful in data forensics. I would call the method: heuristic translation machine learning. I am currently developing code that does this. It will be fun to learn about reinforcement algorithms.5
I'm just a random student that didn't really accomplish something well-known or anything, but I'm very dedicated and always had a project in my spare time running. My goal for 2019 is finishing a playable version of a game I'm developing on my own for about a year now. It's all planned out and I just got to put more hours into it. Really looking forward to people seeing what I'm capable of!1
Soooooo last week was a long week, we have until the end of the month to achieve a big goal and this week was all about going to bed at 3 am or so and begin the day at 7 as usual, the weekend that I ussually take to rest and sleep was at the office too, if we dont get to the goal I will be more dissapointed than ever before
Went to bed at 23:40, slept at ~23:50 - goal accomplished
Woke up, asked that little spying bastard besides me (echo dot) about the time. Understood sth. in the neighbourhood of 0:30.
Booted the phone, realized I've slept a bit more.. It's 2:30.
By now it's 6:32 (CET) I havn't done anything productive but to get out of bed and get some food.
Let's see if my head will produce some working code.2 -
What do I need to know to transition from a frontend developer, to a full stack developer?
Right now I am using AngularJS (I know, very old) at my work and we are transitioning to either React or Angular. My goal is to pickup back end tasks so I can eventually become a full-stack developer. What do I need to do to get there?4 -
Missing the sprint goal because management booked an *entire day* of meetings about stuff going on *next* sprint, on the day before the demo when we're usually racing to complete. Going to look great when I demo incomplete functionality to the client tomorrow. Great consideration for the team there. Fucks sake.1
hi guys, i need your opinions on my life's issue,
i'm a full-stack web developer from Iran, studying master's degree of software engineering here and my goal is to get application for one of europe's universities. this is a three years goal. during this 3 years i have to study hard, do some journal papers, do programming, get IELTS degree, then sign up for application.
all this hardworks is for getting rid of my country, for bad economical problems, and having a better life at the end, start my own company, live my life to the fullest, grow my family and ... .
what's your advices? critics? ideas?3 -
My top goal is work more on my project https://github.com/RiderExMachina/... and get it up and going.
Well I will Program ai to do another job as long as possible.
When nothing else there is to do I will either find something to do or enjoy as our goal (automate things that far that we are not needed) is fulfilled.
Don't think it will ever happen but would be quite nice. -
Yesterday we had discussion on with developers about continuous deployment. When I asked one of the senior developers why they can't uncommit what commits you made to integration branch and which led to integration test failures. He said it's against the basic philosophy of git to uncommit... I don't know how git works...but seriously you can't use previous version of code or can't uncommit??6
What things do you keep in mind when learning a new language, when your main goal is to use it in building projects in a framework?
For eg i am beginning to learn flutter and i am finding a need to learn basic dart things like creating variables, loops, classes, functions, constructors, etc...
What are the most important "language concepts" if you may say it that?1 -
Imagine if you could anything you want to do right now other than working like play games, watch a film, or sleep. That's your goal.
Hi there !
Does anybody have a motivational story about starting as an intern and working towards your end goal ? (front end developer / back end developer or whatever it might be that you do now)2 -
Hey! It's been a while that I've been searching about projects documentation in order to develop a template for the company's projects.
My goal at the moment is technical documentation, like getting started (for new developers), the project's dependencies, conventions, etc.
Edit: I'm planning to build this template, discuss it with the seniors and then present it to the managers.1 -
I'm kind of lost guys 🤔(from the point of view of the career path).
Currently I'm unemployed and looking around for a new job inside and outside Italy, but most of them are quiet mediocre, from the point of view of salary(is hard to reach 40K pre-tax in Italy) or actual interesting work to do.
Leaving that aside, up to now I was always able to deal with any job that I had at hand, despite the industry, and this leaves me with an empty goal in the software development career because I feel capable to adapt to any technical environment.
The business side was always a second thought because it's quite boring most of the times(but I might change mind I think, given the chance).
And if you ask me what I like, I would say anything technically interesting/challenging, so no real preference here 😕
Have you ever had such period in your career?
Did you get the chance to find a way to move on?1 -
Hey there! So, I'm kind of stuck in my own thoughts right now. I've got this goal of becoming really good at DSA, Maths, and computer networks in just one year, while also finding time to do some web development and open-source projects. But here's the problem - I'm just an average person when it comes to those first three things. I don't even know where to start or what to do, and whenever I try to focus on one thing, I end up questioning myself and feeling frustrated. So, I was wondering if anyone could lend a hand and offer me some advice or support to help me reach my goal.13
If a job (swiss knife developer) is preventing you from reaching your goal (freelancing) and take all your time so you can't learn new things, you can't go to the gym, all the projects are boring (theme forest wordpress integration, prestashop hack into cpanel ...), make you sleepless at nights, and grumpier than grumpy cat ... will you quit ?1
