Clients can such cheapskates, client asks me for hosting options, I suggest Webfaction ($10/m), decent service, storage etc. Client goes and buys ($20/year) hosting, storage space 2GB. Client has 2.9GB worth of emails. Now am charging said client ($110) for migration.

A vendor gave us what is turning out to be a very stable storage appliance/software, so we're happy for that. But even so, disks fail. So we need an automated way to identify, troubleshoot, isolate, and begin ticketing against disk failures. Vendor promised us a nice REST API. That was six months ago. The temporary process of SSHing(as root) to every single appliance(60-200 per site, dozens of sites) to run vendor storage audit commands remains our go-to means of automation.

I get uneasy walking away/turning off my computer without committing my code to a server. Zero faith in local storage.

Made a backup script today that backs up our site files and database (total size 34gb, we have 70gb storage)

the script takes 1:10 hours to far the website files and backups up the database and somehow when running in a detached terminal because my boss wanted me to run it at 4:20pm when I'm leave at 5:05pm( what could go wrong) it went in a infinite loop and filed our storage.

I became storage addicted… started with a 240 GB SSD + a 2 TB HDD... two years later added a new 1 TB SSD, a few months later when the HDD died changed it with a 4 TB one… a few days later I bought a 10 TB NAS (80% off on Amazon, too cheap not to buy).

Now I have 15.24 TB and still thinking about changing that 240 GB SSD with a 2 TB one.

I need help.

I've reinstalled android studio five timed… today. on a chromebook, 4gb, ram. but 16gb ssd. it has no regard for storage whatsoever.

My project just went from "we can use one of those arduino boards, they are cheap and easy to use" to "we need a mass storage solution for that, maybe we can buy a shipping container and put it down on a nearby field as an on site storage". I love the things I would do if I had the resources for this kind of project!

Why does the 'save image' feature in 'DevRant' Android App take so long? I mean it's just saving the image from ram to storage right.... also the image sizes are pretty small.

I have a Yahoo app on my phone for some legacy purposes. I just allowed the storage access permissions when it was asking for it during the installation or something, cause like, who doesn't? I checked my Yahoo Mail on the browser tonight and saw copies of my mobile photos in it! It's through the Attach Icon > Insert animated GIF. WTF? So that's how you can easily get hacked from apps?

Sat at my desk this morning, computer incredibly slow, lots of error windows saying files could not be found.

I decide to reboot. Post is slow. And that's a HDD failure. I lost half of my storage. Luckily, almost everything is for projects so it's all in the git repo.

For state management, we use:

Redux state

Session storage

MTP is complete garbage. I want mass storage back.

The media transfer protocol (MTP) occasionally discovers new creative ways of failure. Frequently, directory listings take minutes to load or fail to load at all, and it freezes up infinitely (until disconnected) when renaming an item, and I can not even do two things simultaneously.

While files are being moved, I can not browse pictures or watch videos from the smartphone.

Sometimes, files are listed with the date 1970-01-01 (Unix epoch) instead of their correct date. Sometimes, files do not appear at all, which makes it unsafe to move directories from the device.

MTP lacks random access. If I want to play a two-gigabyte 4K 2160p video and seek in the video, guess what: I need to copy it to my computer's local mass storage first because MTP lacks random access.

When transferring high numbers of files, MTP has to slooooowly enumerate (or "prepare" or "calculate the time of") them all, which might even take longer than mass storage would need for the entire process. This means MTP might start copying or moving the actual files when mass storage is already finished.

Today, the "preparing to move" process was especially slow: five minutes for around 150 files! How am I supposed to find out what caused this random malfunction?

MTP sometimes drives me insane. I want mass storage back, at least for the MicroSD memory card, which uses a widely supported file system.

Imagine a 2010 $100 Android phone is better at file transfer than a 2022 $1000 Android phone (or iPhone, for that matter).

Around 7 months ago,me and my friend started working for a startup as interns. it was work from home internship. they first told us to research about CDN and study about RESTapi. when we finished with that they told us to make a personal storage portal ( ) using CDNs which we did. By far the stupidest thing I've done while drunk is setting up a layered LVM-over-RAID1 + striped LVM storage system *and* managing not to lose any data.

Why does Alarmy app on Android occupy 360 MB of storage space? 🤔

i'm starting a project where i will have a large amount audio clips, anywhere from a few seconds to about an hour long, and i need to store them based on which user created them and what group they are created in (so they will be sorted based on two integers). i'll need to concatenate and/or merge the audio files frequently, and i may need to filter which audio i use based on users and time created.

how should i store the audio? i'm pretty sure a database is the best option, but should i consider using the file system? if i shant, should i use mysql or postgres? i know postgres has more types and supports complex queries.

does anyone have experience who can help?

I'd like to locally encrypt files before syncing it with the cloud; what's the "best" software available for this?

I'm currently switching to STACK as my cloud service (it's a file hosting service for Dutch people that offers 1TB of free storage).
But I don't feel fully comfortable with them having access to all my personal data.

So I came to the conclusion that it would be best to locally encrypt files before syncing it with STACK. I DuckDuckGo'd but there seems to be a lot of software available for this so I'm not sure which one to use.

Which one could you recommend me? I'd prefer a free software but I'm okay with paying as long as it isn't too expensive.

A personal peer-to-peer music streaming app that doesn't need cloud storage. It's like Spotify + Resilio Sync. So, i can access all of my song from the connected device.

The most difficult part about learning/working with new technology is the lack of online support and a really small community! So every time you're stuck with an error you got to open each and every configuration file to see which little value was throwing that page long error!!!!

The same happened with me while working with the new RedHat CEPH Storage while I was configuring my nodes using ceph-ansible. A new error pops up and it was like reaching milestones when I found the error halting up the execution of the playbook!

Insufficient storage

Webhost (that I basically only use for email) decided to get rid of all plans they had in favour of 1 big "unlimited" (with FUP ofc) plan...
I used to pay about 3,65 a year (incl. VAT) for my plan (which had about 1250MB of storage) which was totally fine...
Good enough storage for mails.

The new plan costs me 55 euro a year (incl. VAT) and has that "unlimited" storage...
Which I don't need for a fucking mail server...
And they don't allow me to go back to my old plan >.>

Literally the only reason why I went with them 7 years ago was because they were so cheap (back when they also still hosted my website) and perfectly fit my needs >.>

Would that be possible like Silicon Valley to create a decenteralized data storage system on pcs all around the world and the app would keep spreading itself and by time expand the storage

I ordered a new, speedy, 128gb patriot flash drive last week. I was so excited! I was going to partition it into a fat32 partition, and a bootable Ubuntu with persistence. I’m expanding my storage with 8x 20TB hard drives. With raid5 on it I would get approximately 126TB of storage space.

Fuck Android 11 Scoped Storage -.-

Today I will talk about Android OS being stupid.

Android lets u as a user move installed apps to external storage = microSD card.

However what is stupid about it is that only a small part of the app will be moved. For example, if you have an app taking 400 MB of storage, then "moving" it will move only about 100 MB of data to microSD card, while the remaining 300 MB of data will remain on the internal storage...

In Android 11 this is still not improved. Imagine having 11 versions of OS over 11 years and never making a crucial feature work properly. Meanwhile app sizes grow ever larger

Disappointing.

So I just installed Android 11 on my OnePlus 6T with the 18.0 release of LineageOS. Screen recorder built-in that can finally record system sound and play it too (there used to be a Magisk module but that couldn't play system sound while recording it, everything else is just through the mic) and some doodads like the selection for where to blast your music into has been moved more into view... Epic.

And then comes the Scoped Storage. Oh boy were the Android devs right to hate the guts out of it. It's so fucking slow. Seriously, on that exact device with Android 10, blazing fast. That storage is far from cooked. On Android 11.. have a directory with a thousand or so files, and it takes 5 goddamn seconds to open the directory with them in it. And even with external file managers that you give storage access like usual! Except when you root your device and use a root file manager, then it's fast again. Because that's using the shell instead.

I never thought I'd be able to say this to be honest. The shell is faster than the native tools. Let that sink in for a moment. The shell is faster than the native tools. How on Earth did Google think that this is tolerable?! For security, are you kidding me? Yeah I'll just use the root account for fucking everything in all that security, to have a functioning system!

Android 10 was also initially planned to have this terrible storage system, but due to developer backlash, Google waited a release and it was optional there. That wasn't just time for developers to adapt to Scoped Storage. That should've also been time for Google to actually make it usable.
