idk why people keep saying Chrome hogs up all the memory
i have 16gb of RAM and it just takes 14gb11 -
Merch package signed by dfox himself :D
Maybe I should keep that part, should we ever blow up like Facebook hehehe26 -
We have a couple of magazines on the lunch table at work.
There was a paper cloth covering one magazine and one of the Linux engineers lifted it up. This is how it went:
LE: (Linux Engineer) hmm what's under here...? *picks up the cloth*
*a windows magazine appears*
LE: (while putting the cloth back) ew windows, let's keep you hidden!
*other engineers laughing*15 -
If you are a developer and the resume you send me says "Certified Web Ninja" on it. I will invite you to an interview. But keep in mind, if you don't show up wearing all black and carrying a Katana, I will throat punch you and send you on your way.10
-
Client called and a colleague picked up. Within 10 minutes his face went from happy to nearly eating himself in order to remain calm (veeery above average dumb/stupid person)
It was insanely entertaining to watch how he tried to keep himself together!
Yes, I've got sadistic tendencies sometimes 😊4 -
Just got a job description from a recruiter with this little gem:
"maintain internet using MS Visual Studio"
If I have to use VS to keep your internet up, your company has some serious technical challenges ahead.8 -
Trying to design a company logo and all I keep ending up with is the pringles guy after he loses his job and has a mental break down in a forest...16
-
When you try to explain someone how to set up their router over the phone and you try to keep it as simple as possible...1
-
This is for all the developers out there. Keep learning and keep going!
"No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying."1 -
I can finally play the role of my adversaries:
I will be that Client who makes unreasonable deadlines and unrealistic demands.
Let us see how the A.I. devs can keep up with me ;)2 -
Management:
"We're gonna make our own builder that sets up pre configured files.
So we are gonna get rid again of GIT, because with our system you shouldnt be working over each others files if you keep out of other peoples files."
So they basically are saying, we are going back to no version control because you should all keep to the honor system because our system is better.
I'm fucking leaving...
And possibly leaving a poison pill to boot12 -
Hey everyone - apologies for the downtime earlier today. Our host is having a lot of issues and we're working to keep everything up through it.
On that note- there might be a little more down time tonight as they are trying to fix something and we might need a few server restarts. I will keep everyone updated and thanks for bearing with us!16 -
Just woke up and had a shower. I can hardly keep my fucking eyes open.
Only three nights to go. Yay for being the on call/disruption engineer 😑7 -
When you've been too busy to keep up to date with the code and finally look at what the the junior dev has produced
-
Every. Commit. My Boss. Makes. Is 'cp'. I come in this morning to find 1882 insertions, 143 deletions to master, and this is the commit log for the entire weekend.
How. In the fuck. Am I supposed to effectively work on this project. If I can't keep up with changes.10 -
Start-up: hires 3 junior devs to save money.
Start-up: expects things to get done faster-- BUT-- Start-up keeps adding things to the TO-DO list and backlog-- i.e. it's all relative!!
Start-up: gets angry at 3 junior devs why they can't deliver when they keep adding tasks and ask we fall behind.
Dev team: "Seriously? You hire more devs to finish tasks faster, but you keep adding more than are being finiahed-- obviously it's gonna take longer now regardless"
Git --pull life together2 -
It’s actually pretty neat. I constantly suffer from impostor syndrome, so I always have keep learning to keep up the facade.5
-
When you get a client from real MOTHERFUCKING hell.
You just really FUCKING want to say this:
Scorched earth MOTHERFUCKER. I will massacre you. Now SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME DO MY JOB.
First, take a big step back and literally, FUCK YOUR OWN FACE.
I will rain down an ungodly FUCKING firestorm upon you.
You're gonna have to call the FUCKING United Nations and get a FUCKING BINDING RESOLUTION to keep me from FUCKING destroying you.
I am talking SCORCHED EARTH MOTHERFUCKER.
I will MASSACRE you.
I WILL FUCK YOU UP!
But for your own sake you keep it at this:
Yes sir/ma'am :).7 -
!dev
lol I keep getting in trouble over people taking secondhand-offense, and managers keep bringing up the same instances like I’m somehow at fault.
Look, if Alice says something to Bob, and Carol hears it and gets offended on Bob’s behalf, but Bob doesn’t? Carol should jump off a bridge.10 -
Me: I think you should keep your data in a proper database.
Client : Don't try to up sell your products to me. Excel works just fine! Been keeping data in it for years! Wonder why you ever need a database to begin with.
What would you say? Cause I'm speechless.6 -
Complains why the app is not done yet ...
Because you fucking keep coming up with new features and ask us to implement them immediately !!!??2 -
With regards to what @trogus writes here: https://www.devrant.io/rants/520228
I have now purchased double monitors for $8.99. Until @trogus and @dfox figures out how to monetize this wonderful place, may I suggest that everyone buys something for their avatar? The margin on those should be close to 100%.
On the subject of how much I would pay for using devRant, on one hand I use it more than Spotify which would mean I should happily pay $10/month, on the other hand I shouldn't be using devRant so much since my time is limited and devRant isn't exactly a productivity tool.
I'd personally be OK with every 10th or 20th rant being an ad though for instance. As long as they don't appear in comments.
I hope we all find a way to sustain this great place.13 -
Never underestimate the power of a decent chair!
Was staying at friend's for a couple weeks with a horrible chair - my back just spasmed so hard that I am physically unable to get up from bed. Thank god for devRant to keep me occupied throughout the night.
Stay safe kids3 -
Last follow up rant for now on the Linux job hunting. Recruiter called and said that the employer is no longer interested in me. Slightly sad but hey let's keep the chin up and continue job hunting!10
-
My psychiatrist has recently taken me off paroxotine which i was taking for anxiety. As a result, I'm wide awake unable to sleep cos my head is running at a million miles an hour. You know what I keep thinking?
1.) Sweet hairy balls of Mary Theresa I'm getting married in 3 months.
2.) Installing Arch sounds like fun. I wonder if I can do Unity3D and C# dev on it.
3.) @Gitpush, @Alice, @Linuxxx, @Bluenutterfly, @ThatDude, @AlexDeLarge Love your rants, keep up the good work!14 -
Things that never happen
Customer: I really am happy with the service. The 99.999% availability is great. I completely understand that downtimes are necessary to keep the system up to date....1 -
So I found out I'm only earning 50 cents higher than the minimum wage. Nice, very nice...
... And that's why the backlog of unfinished tasks keep piling up. You get what you pay for.12 -
You know scrum is working when the dev team are feeling that scrum isn't working because they have nothing to do because the product team can't keep up with the pace.4
-
@dfox & @trogus
Just finished reading your app update and I must say that I'm very impressed with the number of changes that have come out in the past six or so weeks. Good job guys and keep up the good work!
PS an autocomplete '@' mention feature would be really helpful.1 -
You know shared folder in Windows? My boss tell us web developers to work on an app inside that single shared folder (from one "powerful" pc, lol) to prevent conflict and keep the app up-to-date instead of git.2
-
Why the FUCK do people keep turning up the brightness on the monitors? Every single time I'm in programming class, some complete fucking idiot set the brightness blindingly high! I want to keep my eyes for a while, anything other than 0 just makes my eyes hurt on this monitor!12

Dev at some point of the Interview.
Me: ...and how good do you consider yourself with vanilla JavaScript.
Him: erm... I think I'm very Good with Javascript but to be honest, never heard of that Vanilla framework. There are so many libs/frameworks that it's hard to keep up.
Me: ...7 -
Long time lurker. First time poster. Just wanted to say hi!
Half my workday is being spent on devRant so thought might as well join in on the fun!
Keep up the goodwork!7 -
When working in embedded, you basically write your program, compile it and flash it on some hardware.
Compiling and flashing usually require some black magic commands with lots of parameters so i set up two shortcuts in my terminal
yolo to compile
swag to flash
Understandably i keep it to myself1 -
Loving the ++ / -- buttons! I was happy to see that change rolled out this morning.
Keep up the great work guys!1 -
10 years in dev and can't seem to keep up with all these languages. I learn one forget the other. Mix up syntax. Features removed or added.
Still use cheat sheets which I update as the languages change.
Just me or everyone else?9 -
The wife is asleep. The two year old wrecking ball of a boy is asleep. Wanted to finish a library to run kafka/grpc for nodejs microservices with plug and play functionality.
Make some tea. Figured the caffeine will keep me up. Maybe work late night. It'll be fun.
Then diarrhea hits. Now, staying up late because apparently I ate something I shouldn't have. Don't you hate it when that happens?11 -
I realized some time ago that when people ask you to do something and it is too generic, if you keep pushing for an explanation they end up getting angry at you as if you are the stupid one.
So funny, I'm always doing it on meetings now and laughing inside :)2 -
I fucking love the DevRant community. The amount of honesty here and ranting is 🔥.
Let the rage flow through you and keep it up fam.7 -
Whenever I'm trying new tech at work I don't keep interrupting people ta help me with error messages because ITS A FUCKING NEW TECH AND NO ONE WORKS WITH THAT SHIT!
WHY THE FUCK YOU KEEP ASKING ME FOR HELP WITH YOUR FUCKED UP NODE SHIT AFTER I TOLD YOU THAT I DON'T LIKE IT? STOP IT!3 -
Today is the first time my pc fully crashed. I keep always everything updated and never had a problem. I didn't know what went wrong. After I opened my pc up I found out that a mouse family was living in my pc. Maybe I should clean the hardware more8
-
It's a satisfying moment when you actually get work done on a personal project. It's comforting knowing I am capable of not being a lazy shit all the time. Gotta keep this up.1
-
Hate Pair Programming. You either have an over smart sob who'll just keep blazin through things without giving a fuck whether the other person is able to catch up, or you get a lazy asshole who just keeps checking facebook on his phone!! Fuck pair programming!!7
-
I'm torn -- shiny new macbook pro, want to keep it pristine for as long as possible, but I've also got a burning desire to sticker it up.25
-
I'm beyond pissed as of now. hostgator, FUCK YOU.
YOUR GODDAMN PORTAL IS DOWN. PORTAL.HOSTGATOR.COM IS DOWN.
PLEASE HOSTGATOR, STOP BEING A BIGGER BITCH THAN MY LARGE FEMALE DOG.
end of rant, a hosting company should really be able to keep THEIR OWN FUCKING WEBSITE UP.5 -
You dense motherfuxker. There is a reason why we create a separate feature branch, put our code there, check the CI and THEN merge that to master. The whole reason of merge feature to master is that the CI DOES NOT GET FUCKED UP! You never keep committing your feature changes directly to master. THAT'S HOW YOU FUCK THE CI UP.9
-
Dear IT,
STOP FUCKING RESETTING SERVERS AT 9PM AT NIGHT, WHEN DEV PRODUCTIVITY IS AT IT'S EPITOME!!!!
DO YOU EVEN FUXKING UNDERSTAND THAT IT TAKES 20 MINUTES TO GET ALL THE SERVICES BACK FUCKING UP? ALL THE FOCUS BUILT UP, GONE IN A FLASH BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T KEEP IT IN YOUR PANTS TILL LATER.
sincerely,
mahaDev,
mind-fucked software engineer.4 -
I enjoy reading the rants. I also enjoy seeing how some rants end up with solutions from fellow developers who have had similar experiences. It's a huge reason I love our industry. Keep kicking ass everyone.
/non-rant -
I have to say that DevRant community is good. Read my previous posts, I have been facing office issues and mostly everyone responds positively.
Keep up the good work DevRant community!!!3 -
Man how do you skinny devs keep so skinny? I'm not even eating fat things and I'm nearing to light obesity... Is there a patch that I missed? apt update says it's up to date?20
-
I really hate designers who get worked up over a few pixels difference between their mockup and the end result.
I really, really, really, really, thoroughly despise designers who get worked up over a few pixels when they keep changing the mockup without notifying me, when we're already *weeks* past our intended launch date.
Shove those pixels up your ass, you fucking fuck7 -
Hurray! Finally the IOS devRant Supporter subscription link has been approved by Apple and works. I joined at 4 am today. Great way to start the day. Keep up the great work David and Tim.
-
Some people tape up inputs like camera and mic to keep gov and hackers out of their private lives.
Me, I'm an exhibitionist.1 -
Would people use a feature where they could swipe on a rant they've seen. This way newer stuff could be let through but old stuff wouldn't keep popping up every time you reopen devrant.8
-
I like how devs keep on shitposting Windows rants, but never switch to Linux.
Windows will never get better, you have to give it up :)9 -
1. Identify the problem
2. Come up with a clever solution
3. Refactor half of your code
4. Watch it fail horribly because you're such an idiot it's a bloody miracle you keep breathing on your own
5. Repeat2 -
Tried to do a startup for a year, did not make loss but did not get the funding to keep going. Now going back to previous company and taking up the old job. 😔11
-
That sinking feeling when you use ES6/Webpack/Vue on personal projects and have to work with ES5/jQuery/Angular (and no task runner) at your regular job...8
-
Giving up/panicking/talking myself down when shit gets difficult ;/.
I always want stuff to work immediately, and I hate it when I don't understand something.
But since this is such a big part of working in dev, I should learn to keep going!2 -
Do you ever wonder if you got promoted to senior developer too early? I keep making stupid mistakes that get picked up by more junior developers at code review I need to up my game10
-
New toy. However, I am at a dilemma. Do I keep its aesthetic nice and clean, or do I make it awesome with stickers. Also. Do I take off the intel and nvidia stickers to clean it up further. Decisions decisions.35
-
When older devs must keep all obsolete code in comments, "Just in case". No amount of begging can change their mind. Source control is a thing now in 2016, maybe you should read up on it.. 😑2
-
Technology evolves so fast and I see people who know plenty of languages and thousands of things. I always try to keep up, but there are day which I don't learn anything at all and when I go to bed I think about how I'm wasting my time and my existence5
-
take adderall and stay up coding all night extremely effectively, but then u keep going and by the end of it you're just optimizing your vim plugins and installing a new linter
-
I think this is both a blessing and a curse for me.
Whenever I'm developing something, I ALWAYS keep coming up with new (good) feature ideas WHILE programming. Now, this isn't as bad because they enrich the software/service mostly but goddamn, it's so fucking annoying when I'm working on a certain function/feature and I change stuff three motherfucking trillion times before finishing it because I keep coming up with fifteen billion new ideas.
In the end it's all worth it but at some moments it gets really fucking annoying.9 -
1. No more fucked up solutions like: React Native, Flutter, Xamarine, Phonegap, Ionic
2. Make XCode vanish and put a better IDE instead of it
3. Keep "the next bill gates" away from me, those who keep on saying: I have an idea its like Facebook but different8 -
Finally woke up 4:00 Am and started my daily timetable perfectly. Just hope I can keep it up and finish my C# project on time.
(The only tricky part is resisting against assassin's creed origins I've recently installed 😀)1 -
I don't really "keep" myself motivated. I wake up with certain amount of motivation every day and then I slowly die inside through out the day, every day.2
-
At a networking event. Tired. Not a people person, especially when tired.
Found a secluded empty booth, pretending to do some urgent work. Hoping no-one notices I'm not socialising.
How long can I keep this up is the question! :D7 -
Hit udemy, Google for any new technologies, attend large conferences, and simply spend 30 mins to an hour each day coding in anything new - and of interest.
I have to keep up with the young people, to keep my job/career alive, heh.1 -
As promised, here is an update photo! Just bought some nicer BenQ displays and a quad VESA mount to hold it all. My RX 460 can barely keep up, so that's the next thing on the upgrade list.
Full resolution: https://ibb.co/jP2Pue6 -
Do less development and more living. I’m tired of all of it. I need a career track change. I don’t know how anyone can keep up with all of it.1
-
That's it!
Trying to plan ahead for each day but i keep failing !
I go to bed early at night but still cant wake up as early as i hope to.
Anybody has a solution for this?8 -
v2.0.22 is now officially LIVE in GMT+2. Congrats and good job everybody!
Let's not fuck this one up, shall we? Let's keep our shit together this time.5 -
15 lbs down today. Getting back to fighting weight.
I'm at that part of the diet where I'm just starting to see real results in my body, but also have a massive urge to give up.
Just need a little kick in the bum to keep going.9 -
Very high number of quality rants lately. Trending up fast in my opinion. Even today - Saturday which used to be a lighter day.
Becoming a nice challenge to read them all. Way to go. Keep on ranting! What do you think about the rant volume and quality?2 -
Alot of youngster still give absolute Zero fuck though

Finally got my stickers! :D thanks DevRant, for being an awesome community. Keep up the good work!4
-
Is anyone here familiar with generating PNG files from MBTiles files?
I've tried multiple libraries but keep ending up with black, non readable, PNG files which is starting to get really fucking annoying.
(Platform is Linux, obviously)5 -
Why thank you! 😁
Much appreciated! And let me just say while I'm thinking about it, devRant is hands down the best community I've been apart of in a very long time. Keep up the rants!4 -
Guy at school
"I could do that... OR I could do it... in C#HNNNNNNNNGH"
Yeah, we get it. You like C#. Hooray for you. Please stop cumming every time it's mentioned.10 -
Always keep trying, never give up on the bugs you have.even if you have to start over again.
Someone once asked me:
Why do we fall?
I answered him:
To rise up again even stronger.4 -
Just a little poll for you guys :)
Do you comment your code during the development or when it's done?
Do you keep track of the documentation during the development or after?
Do you use Git only for source control or also to work from multiple places and keep the code up to date?
Do you sh*tcode on purpose (or don't make any effort to clean it) when it's not for yourself, or not for something you value much?
If you have any other strange habit, feel free to mention it :)16 -
You have a JavaScript application. You have to keep up with stupid devs that don't know TypeScript because you don't have the time to let them study it and they get demotivated when they can't do stuff so fine, you keep it JS. You use JSDoc to write the documentation. You miss using TypeScript so you start doing some @typedef's. Oh your linter gets it and starts behaving as a substitute of TypeScript. You get excited and write more and more @typedef's! ... until they get so complicated that you start documenting *that*...3
-
Being a developer is a fucking struggle and no one fucking understands it.
Trying to keep up with new technologies and working with Project Managers that wants stuff to be delivered in no time is what makes you regret your career sometimes..
Maaan I FUCKING HATE THIS JOB!!!8 -
"Work hard and be nice to people. No one is born with the ability, and no one owes you anything. If you want to do something, start small and build it up. Then keep doing it!" - Jon Hicks1
-
I only take gaming breaks to heat up my computer to keep my coffee on my computer warm in order to code more its not a distraction it's efficiency
-
Worst part of being a dev is that feeling that you're walking up the down escalator. Can't get ahead and if you stop, you're back where you started.
Oh and some punk kids keep passing you on the way! Lol -
As a developer it is so hard to keep up with all of the emerging technologies, especially all the freaking Javascript frameworks and fad libraries. As if that wasn't enough, they have to give these things weird ass names. Ffs.4
-
I keep spreading myself too thin. I pick up too many projects and find myself not working as much as I want on my main projects. I've been getting better about realizing this, and I caught myself after less than a month. But shit. I need to stop it.
-
Learn nodejs, love it, abandon it coz most jobs in the country want php and none heard about the new js frameworks.
1 year later, decide to change job, look at posting to find senior php position, all companies want node, angular, react & vue...4 -
Note to self: if you have a tight deadline and need to rush a website / web app, use SASS because you're going to end up with 800+ lines of CSS because you suck at your job and you keep telling yourself you'll refactor everything but never get around it.
-
One of the biggest challenges for me learning to program is my memory.
Some people can pick up concepts easily and have a field day. I have to keep practicing until I memorize it properly, and even then I have the tendency to struggle.
Does this mean I give up? Helllll no. I'm far from giving up with all the progress I've made.4 -
Other Team: "our builds don't clean up properly"

Other Team: "our builds keep filling up machines"
*docker rmi $(docker images -q)*
Random Team Member: "My builds keep failing on service foo randomly exiting"
Other Random Team Member: "Why is there no caching on our builds"

team panics thinking it's their fault as our main job still passes, as it's on another machine.

So i came up with indoor plant debugging
1. Keep a plant near your code
2. if you are writing a shitty code plant starts dying
☠️6 -
December 3 2018 - > present
I stopped making websites and therefore am no longer required to keep up with all the fancy trendy js frameworks3 -
Companies try to find young devs, less experienced but more openminded and flexible.. do you think we will still find some cool sobs when we're > 40 || > 50 years old, even if we keep up with new technologies and stuff?
Never thought about it until now..3 -
Time for late night coding, debugging, thinking..been busy since I woke up, work, college, exams, work..work while waiting for an exam..
Coffee - check
Cigarettes - check
Music to keep me motivated - check
Laptop still not lagging - check
Will probably want to sleep in couple of hours - check -
Really need to find a small project to work on, every other small project I start turn's itself up to 11 in scope and ends up getting shelved -.-
Why can't i just keep things small!
Plus any other project that stays small ends up requiring something complicated that I've never done, why do I do this to myself...4 -
"Flatpak is the best package manager because it doesn't use your local fs and it does all sorts of lib-sharing and the more you use it the less space things take up and..."
it hosed /usr when installing one (1) program from the official repo

Client visits to Indian IT companies are extravagant affairs. It's Suit Up time, flowers and lights, decorations everywhere, Lavish Lunch and Dinners. While this happens I keep wondering, what goes in the mind of these clients. Are they excited, surprised, or they enjoy the hospitality.3

Anyone else thinks the internet is outdated and doesn't suit the needs of today? We can't keep patching it up forever.4

Developer problems:
6 different package managers to keep up to date.

Life is a continuance...
Of falling and breaking apart...
Of Breaking your heart and losing it...
Of gathering yourself back again...
Of getting up on your feet again...
As long as you gather yourself...
and keep getting up again...

Yeah sure, drown me in administrative work and then plan to hire another dev to help because I can't keep up.
Are you kidding me?
F*cking hire someone for the KPI and that stuff!2 -

When you inherit some code from the job student and you notice how well written and commented it is. I'm glad he is soon returning as a fulltime employee. Hope he will keep this up. -
First pro dev job, and I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. Yet I have been pushing features, but I got this feeling I ain’t going to be able to keep it up!2

"Hey, this developer does some good work, I think I'll follow them to keep up... Oh, their online presence is consumed in identity politics? Damn."1
-
My golden rule of debugging - Isolate issues by changing one unit of code at a time. Keep everything else constant.
Second most helpful rule - pick up the habit of fixing things by reviewing code, instead of relying on debuggers. Make you so much more aware of possible pitfalls while coding itself.1 -
the biggest challenge i've faced is to keep up the motivation and lower my frustration where a project enters the AMS phase.
It's so stressful, you stop improving your dev skills and you have to deal with shitty and boring problems everyday. -
I’ve tried to think about it and all I can come up with is that I think my biggest insecurities are my procrastination and lack of faith in my abilities to get and keep a job as a dev.
-
The work is not going so great. How to keep up w the constant rejection and negativity I have no idea at this point. Why have I become such a negative person in every aspect of life 🥹1
-
Lets make sure that we are always using the latest software! Keep things up to date#
..... (new version of bulma.io comes out)
..... (Updating libraries...)
.....
Why is the website all fucked up looking?
Shit they changed the padding level on like everything?!
..... Reverting back to older version, fuck that idea.2 -

After a couple of depressing weeks with no progress on my projects and seeing reject emails one after the other, it feels cathartic to see some real momentum on my projects and finally scheduling telephonic interviews with multiple recruiters.
When it rains, it pours, but when it shines, you also get rainbows. :)
Fall is coming, the colors are changing. -
Would you rather make every software you want but give up coding, or keep coding but always for somebody else's project?5

I love the people on github who puts one line text and a gif of their project. So easy to understand and not having to read some large text. Keep up the good work people.2 -
Several JavaScript Frameworks / Libraries keep springing up everyday! After learning Angular, everyone is saying it's fading and React has taken over.
What's fucking wrong with Front end?!!15 -
November is coming up. That means no mental illness month. Absolutely no front end or JS shit all month. Because it is going to be officially:
"No Nutjob November"
So keep your AOK ass to yourself in November!
(AOK, if you see this, we miss you!)4 -
I used to have time to read up on new web development tools and techniques and it helped me get a better job.
Now I have a better job I'm always busy, which I love, but it's harder to keep up to date.
I do some reading in my own time but it's more difficult to focus.
Thinking about it, I suppose I do keep learning just by being at work and solving new problems.1 -
"You should never be working under someone who's not smarter than you. Unless one day you surpass me, then keep it up and don't tell anyone."

3am and I have more bugs than I started with, but at least if I press this button it comes up with "Youre doing great keep it up"1

Have a friend who wants to enrich his coding portfolio but is scared of people copying his more serious code if he puts it up on github.
Told him it's all about open source and he could just keep the more casual code up there while giving access to serious projects on request from a company, but it's not very ideal, is it?
What would you tell him?7 -
How do people work in coffee shops for the day but not lose their seat when they inevitably need the toilet?!
Keep buying coffee to stay in the shop causing me to pack up at least 3 times today and move to a different corner....3 -
Thank you so much guys! They're here and now the hardest decision is where to place them 😂
Keep up the awesome work! @dfox -
Hey devRanters, how do you charge your phone?
1) Let ist almost drop to about 1-5%, and then let it charge fully up over night, and keep it plugged in till morning.
2) Just let it drop about 10-20% and charge it immediately up, and unplug it, when it reaches full charge15 -
How do you force yourself to work at night?
No matter how much I try my body is stronger than my brain. I can't keep my eyes focused after 00:00 and I have to sleep. I know people who stay up and keep developing in all-nighter.
How do you this?12 -
1. Reduce the number of web development technologies so that I can actually keep up.
2. Master Android development.
3. No more "Please hack a Facebook account for me". -
Never stop learning, and don't get frustrated when you can't keep up at times. Technology is changing faster than most people can learn. The point is to keep on learning. Those who stop learning are well equipped for yesterday, so the saying goes.

Once I really messed up with git. Lots of conflicts, strange branching, HEAD in detached state etc. Just cloned an earlier version of the repo into a separate folder, hand transferred all the changes I needed to keep and force merged into master as if nothing ever happened.1

Would it be plagiarism to convert a video tutorial to a text version write-up for others like myself who prefer not interpreting my music to learn
Or would the resulting documents be something to keep to myself for when I inevitably search the same things3 -
Be interested. Try to do whatever you're doing the best way possible. Do research, keep up, roll with the punches, and don't take things personally. If you like being a dev, it should be easy to find the fun in it.

Torn between buying a new pc now and waiting till a time when a new version doesn’t drop every fucking week 😡1
-
My best friends from university. Somehow I ended up with friends who are all better than me in computer science. Thus, I am basically forced to work hard to keep up.
-
Windows 10 is just a bad joke at this point. First it doesn't show any text in the menus, now it fucks up all the drivers. I really need to scrap it and install literally ANY other os in order to improove my experience but I keep telling myself that it doesn't really make sense until I have a new harddrive and I keep wondering if the Evo850 is worth it. Fuck the saturday night struggle.5

Tdd isn't very effective if the spec keeps change as you work.
I was trying to be good and write tests as I went, but it just ended up taking twice as long since I had to keep rewriting the code AND the tests.3 -
"Please stop importing the resources so fast, our servers can't keep up"
Please send the correct data in the first place, so we don't need to fetch all of it again under time pressure -
That moment when you find a function called with faulty arguments or a referece mistaken and fix it and code actually works now aaaaand you wake up.. i started to dream about the same code cause i keep rewriting it for different reasons.. what a life
-
The other day I fucked up. I coded a safety measure that saves a file on crash, to keep data safe.
I added two lines of code before loading the file, and they crashed. There goes all my data.
(At least got to fix that bug) -
Time to get going properly with ansible, consul and docker swarm.
Idea is first to convert tinc to a container, which automatically sets itself up based on previous consul announced tinc nodes.
Consul to keep track of all the nodes with prometheus too and hopefully auto attach to grafana.
Ansible to set up new nodes right with DO API, announce to consul, pull docker images and join the docker swarm master.2 -
I keep forgetting about Ctrl+space so I always end up trying all the letters on my keyboard to see a complete list of properties on a config DTO.
-
I keep forgetting to design for the failure path, so my product is an accurate depiction of society, where everybody has a convenient excuse to not handle issues and the slightest problem ends up collapsing everything.2
-
One of the great lessons I've learned in this career was to: "Stop rewriting up that code to perfection and start moving on to better things. Keep moving ahead. That code will be replaced and get messy again anyway."
But that doesn't mean you should write bad-designed or sloppy code.2 -
Due to non work related shit I'm struggling to focus, I can still wrap my head around programming (even if with significant struggle) but I cannot keep up with cloud/containers/microservices/cool new tech of the day2
-
Does anyone know of a good place for coding challenges? I want to keep practicing my coding, but I'm terrible at coming up with projects.3
-
Nothing gives me more satisfaction in backend development than encountering errors/exceptions. It brightens up my day to know that something is happening and i get to keep my job, too2
-
IE11 is my fucking enemy lately. We’re trying to keep up with the latest techniques here so we gave CSS Grid a try. Only works partially in IE11 but still important since our old users still use it and it’s responsibe for 5% of all income.2
-
So, apparently the female front-enders won't get fired even though they submit works that even doesn't meet up close to the requirements.
Management want to keep good PR.
Fuck GirlsCanCodeBullShit.16 -
Sure, you *could* set up identical VMs on your server and just have one config file for your java application. But why not just set up lots of users on the server, keep various configs in source control, and have a manual task to change the config you're pointing to when you build?
Idiots.2 -
I keep thinking that I need to set up my site for a portfolio or something, but then I remembered that I'm really bad at coming up with designs.
Have tried to look up some other sites for inspiration, but I always get these really impressive sites that me feel even more potato :c2 -
when CTO says we need to start writing exactly how long we worked on specific project and explain what exactly we did in that time.
I don't wanna keep track of my every minute spent..
I did not sign up for this sh!t...3 -
Just received my stickers and stress ball! A big thanks to the devRant Team. Keep up the awesome work!

I keep my desk at work uncluttered, and I haven't set up a workspace at home yet, but when I do, the pride of my desk will definitely be my namesake.

The problem with college is that it makes you feel like it's the be-all, end-all of learning. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you want to succeed, you must never, ever stop learning.
-
So in my experience, coding while I'm not sober actually helps out sometimes. I always end up documenting my code way more so that I can keep track of what I am doing, and the code I write is actually decent.
Ofcourse, I always re-test it once sober again2 -

First class mail for first class stickers! Thank you @dfox and @trogus, keep up the awesomeness4 -
Even while quite experienced, I do keep messing names up:
start_server
stop_server
And
server_start
server_stop
I do know that last example is better with autocomplete but my head thinks the other way. I find myself frequently renaming functions in the end.
What is your preference?30 -
Any advice to how to get back my motivation? I love coding, but now I can't keep up my motivation long enough :(5
-
Hi guys. jeez i have to say i mastered java and python those languages are easy if i keep this up i might be able to make my own api or get into java cryptography maybe show android app developers how to keep their source code safe from reverse engineers to be honest on android i started from python, to java to AIDE (android app), to android studio i even made my first lib file these aren't games im still learning i have like one project is like a clicker game lol6
-
How long do you guys tend to keep SQL migration scripts around?
Obviously they don't use up much disk space, but they do start to create clutter in a project4 -
You know when your one man project has come along so far that it suddenly is more fun to use it than develop it. How do you guys muster up the discipline to keep working towards the goal?5
-
Always hate asking these questions but Google is no help and SO is just filled with unhelpful answers...
Does anyone know of an up to date debian repo that has an up to date version of valac for arm?
It's a pain in the ass to keep rebuilding on my system everytime I reset my Chromebook and the official Gnome repo doesn't support ARM .-.2 -
I really feel lost in the world of freelancing, I mean I literally have three jobs on the go so barely any pressure and yet I'm cocking up my time estimations and mixing up code for each site, and giving incorrect predictions for completion, so basically I keep ending up working for free. Freelancers of the depths of devRant, please help! How do you manage to maintain a work life balance? Is accurate predictions and time management just something that comes with experience?
Also huge props to you for being able to keep your mentality!12 -
Update: now we are all home office for a while, and i had to set up signal (the dev team normally uses telegram) to keep in touch with everyone and wow what a fucking garbage app.11
-
Hello my fello devs, i am here in rant for about 20 days and i am very happy with this rant community.. much more than quora XD ( i am not making a compition between those 2 lol just saying ... :) )
Anyway good job rant.. keep it up.4 -

How do you guys keep track of IT news... Not financial or companies related news, but new frameworks worth looking for, new updates on know languages/frameworks?
For instance for me to keep up with flutter or firebase I do by following both the github and YouTube channel. But I learned about flutter (early on) for instance, by a random lucky search...
Am I missing on something big? A blog, YouTube channel... Because if I am not missing on something like that I know what to do in the next hackton :P8 -
I hate when programmers never want to go out their comfort zone. They should be relegated into a hell spinned inside a Virtualbox instance.
I have this *** angular setup. We want to try to keep the dev environment congruent between all the colleagues.
The decent programmer would use a node version manager, or try to keep up with everything. LOLNOPE THEY FUCKIN' SPUN A FRIGGIN' VAGRANT VIRTUAL MACHINE RUNNED WITH ADMIN PERMISSIONS which is slowing everyone down. A single "npm i" now requires half an hour.
I tried to use YARN that is faster and makes a mergeable lock, NOPE WE SHOULD KEEP USING THAT STUPID NPM INSTALL that is slow AF and sometimes messes up the versions.
I tried to make 'em use the peerDependencies correctly but LOLNOPE WE SHOULD RELY ONTO THE AUTOMATIC PEERDEP RESOLVER INSIDE NPM7, SO YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOUR VERY SAME LIBRARY IS INCLUDED OR NOT.
Thank god i'm changing job. -
I'm starting to get annoyed with Android Studio. I generally enjoy it as far as an ide goes, but why does it need to update so often??? Seriously it feels like every time I open it I get a notification saying to update something or other.
On a somewhat related note but not actually Android Studio's fault, I have decided that IdeaVim sucks. It's good sometimes, but it can't keep up with my keystrokes, so I end up with random characters in my code because even though I hit "jj" (remapped to ESC) then start typing other commands, I end up with the next command being read as still in insert mode, then it catches up with the escape and pops me back to normal mode. It drives me crazy because then I have to go back and undo the extra characters, then redo my command and it kills my flow. I'm not even that fast of a typist, it shouldn't be that hard to keep up... -
Could you guys suggest some really good blogs based on Technology and Programming that will keep me up to date with those 2 worlds.
Thank You.4 -
Sometimes we have setbacks, but the problems you face define who you are and what you are able to overcome. These include any issue with life. The challenges you once faced 5 years ago are nothing to the you that is now - keep up the good work :)2

Idk who tosensei and sid keep having fights with, but get the fuck out of here.
I'm tired of seeing your drama (+ new accounts and bitching) in my feed all the time.
Y'all some grown ass bitches, so grow up ffs.3 -
Here’s a joke I keep remembering on DevRant:
Someone asks about PHP in Great Britain being €.
Others responding saying to make it go faster you put the actual conversion rate €(0.88)
LOL
I still crack the fuck up thinking about it1 -
Yeah Elementary OS, you look cool and all of that but come on, you could've at least IMPROVED THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR WEBSITE SO I'D BE ABLE TO START DOWNLOADING YOU, anyway, keep up the good work.2

What are good resources to keep up with the latest developments on the field of computer security?1

I wouldn't want to run a company, but I keep hearing about incompetent bullshit and so I think I want to run a company and not fuck it up.

When you're writing your most beautiful module yet and realize that you need the new Jackson library, go to upgrade the dependency and all your old dependencies break because nobody ever took the time to keep packages up to date! #DependencyHell

Some days I completely lack the ability to focus on anything.. Much like a gold fish.
Other days, I keep going for hours and effortlessly picks right back up on my track..
So riding the wave & acknowledge when I should slack off and fake it when questioned is my method.. :p -
When coworkers/management can´t keep the password management up to date. EVEN WHEN REPEATEDLY BEING TOLD SO.

Are there peoppe here who also enjoy playing Tekkit/Technic/FTB? I've long lost my desire to play normal Minecraft but the amount of automation I can build and set up in Tekkit is so amazing that I keep coming back to it3

setting up cisco webex makes me want to commit die
it’s like they made a video calling platform but then wanted to be like slack and started throwing all sorts of stuff inside
and the recordings keep giving me .webex files instead of .wrf or .arf which is annoying asf5 -
I mean, seriously, people joke about this, but does a new version of angular get released every week or something? How is anyone supposed to keep up? Let alone find the right version of the documentation to reference?
I’m sure learning angular will be worth it in the end... maybe.2 -
Is there a minimum amount of months I need to work for a company I'm fed up with so it doesn't look too bad on my resume when I finally quit?
I swear I keep thinking of quitting more and more every passing week.4 -
It's pain in the ass, when you finally managed to free enough memory to keep your android os up-to-date and just a few minutes after update restart getting a message that there is an os update, which needs another 200mb.
It's a never-ending torture..4 -
How do I come up with ideas for side projects to practice new frameworks and skills I pick up?
I keep learning new languages and tools, but have no "worthy" project to show for as proof.
How do I come up with cool project ideas? Any sources? Any outright examples for cool ideas I could take inspiration from?1 -
Every freaking time I think I've fixed my bug and can continue, I see a secondary bug showing up making me revise the code that I previously fixed..
At least I keep myself busy I guess. -
How do you guys manage to keep interest up in your work? I seem to have fallen into a rut at work where it just doesn't keep my interest anymore. It's mainly bug fix stuff, and the requirements are given few and far between so there's a lot of down time to, even working across 3 programs...3

Shit my "Senior" Dev coworker days:
"Well, logically, lies are more important because it takes more effort to remember the lie, who you've told it to, and any extra stuff you made up to keep your story straight. Then, when you have more than one lie, you work even harder to keep them all in line".1 -
Job requirements, when they require a whole department fitted in one dev.
A single person cant keep up always with latest trends and tend to know them very well. -
Does anyone else's notifs glitch out on here? I keep clearing them but every time I load it back up my notifications are back - currently up to 16 and they won't go away10

Its hard to move forward, when everything is hung up on the past... Keep the mess of the past, or change for a better future... I don't care2

Job hunting again is so fucking hard, they should tell you right away if you did not pass , instead of keep your hopes up. I can take the rejection but the anticipation for nothing really hurts.2

I think studying engineering has really fucked up the way i learn new things...i find it nearly impossible to commit anything to memory that could easily be looked up. On its own it doesnt sound so bad but now I keep forgetting simple programming syntax and android design patterns because my brain just keeps saying
"You dont need to remember this, you can find it online is 2 mins"
Id rather just keep a bookmark of a great navigation drawer tutorial as opposed to learning it myself...i worry now what will happen in my technical interviews even though I consider myself a good programmer -
When you want to read as many rants as possible, you click open then fast enough but it Devrant can't keep up, opens very slowly... :(1
-
Should I just give up? I keep trying to learn Android and can never seem to memorize anything. Like how to do a recyclerview. I know that it needs a adapter a view holder. Yet I always have to look up how's it's done. Either though docs or from other projects. Is that common? Or should I give up since I can't seem to remember how to do it.5
-
Always heard programmers bashing on artists because they can't keep consistent naming conventions and keep screwing up this and that. Well, i found something worst: marketing people. At least keep the extension we request on the files you are giving us :(

I recently removed the PlayStore and other Google apps from my smartphone and got myself fdroid.
Since not all the apps that I'm using are on fdroid I wondered, how to keep those apps up-to-date?3 -
I am afraid if I will be able being always learning, never stopping, never stagnating, for dozens years of my career.
How long my brain will be able to keep up with new technologies?
How fast they would be gone and replaced by new ones?2 -

I think the CA DMV is under attack right now. Been here for a couple of hours and computers keep going up and down. And now they just announced that this is state wide across all DMVs, so going to another one nearby will not help.

So I have spent the entire morning trying to fix null values in the database, because they keep fucking up my code.
I hate the fucking person who made the database at the place I work, dude has not heard of a thing called NOT NULL!!! -
I've been doing stuff on my free time after school for about 3 years now. And i cant keep working on projects without losing motivation or getting stuck without a solution and then giving up, i've also tried working with a lot of teams and friends but it seems like everything i do or i work on ends up cancelled or full of issues and roadblocks. any advice?4

Fml trying to keep up with kibana's changes. That shit changes its half of its http calls to use different module in minor version upgrade. Not all but half! So suddenly some of your interceptors will be like huh I don't see this call anywhere.
-
Keep your stuff up to date. always!
It'll save you a lot of work & headaches and time. and we all know, time=€€ so it might even save money.
Besides that it is just cool and very nice to work with the newer things -
I keep having these ideas of a steam like interface for transfering money and buying virtual items, but I can't for the life of me figure out how i would go about it other then a basic flask mongo db set up which would be ripe for malicious attacks5

hey, how do you keep up with the migration files and git branches, i name them, how do you make sure the current branch has latest migration files so it does not break your application :)2

Anyone know any good PHP/LAMP/Node devs worth a grain of salt?
Someone that can keep up with me?
I’m tired of working alone and having no one to talk to about code and systems.
Looking for friends first and possible future employees later :P6 -
I'm not looking a job move at the moment but always keep an eye on the market. Sometimes you get companies looking for specific experience within a certain stack. How can any dev learn them all or get experience in all and keep up.
Surely their recruitment requirements have to be lenient in some respects as they won't always fine somebody who's willing to move and has the exact experience they need.1 -
nephews who had good childhood and loving families: hey, keep up!
me, pouring liquid lye into my super soaker: 🙂3 -
PHP is like the black sheep on every family tree. Lots of work revolves around him. It's prone to failure, break up easily, does things in an inefficient manner, and gets all kind of disease. So I'm using other family memebers, C++ and Go, to keep him on track.8

🤔 Question for Middle/Senior developers:
What news do you consume to keep up to date and improve skills?
What topics interest you most?3 -

Seems like working in a start up is more tougher than i thought it will be.
Damn it's is taking a lot to keep up now a days.
Need advice to balance out thing.
Before this startup thing I was a freelance developer.1 -
Should be noted these people have some things to make up for since their worthless asses are hogging up the housing yet again and this job is taking advantage of my situation and trying to keep me screwed over therefore collectively these people need to pay or spend several seasons in the street4

Github actions are so complicated, why they don't set up something like a simulator. I keep pushing my updates everytime I make changes to my yml file only to know it errors.1

What's up with the scrolling on Devrant? Or rather, the lack thereof. I keep being sent back to the top of the page.

I like to switch up my Google Meet and Zoom backgrounds. Keep people guessing where the heck I am. I’m a remote worker. It definitely messes with some people. Both the backgrounds and the permanent WFH thing.

I can't get a regular shedule. I mean I try to plan my days but I either do a lot of stuff a few days and after that a few days of barely anything because I'm exhausted from doing so much the days before, I never keep up to my plans.4

Most companies/managers never give you your KRA because they want to keep changing your responsibilities.
They will then make you answerable for the responsibilities which you didn't sign up for, but were forcefully given1 -
my favorite is to keep a cache of "gimmes"
the idea is to just keep a collection of tasks that need done bit are super easy and really low priority. the theory is the same as doing a mundane task - you simply mindlessly code through the some tasks allowing you to think through things in a new way and hopefully clearing up your block...
...plus you're still mildly productive -
Anybody here a UI designer that can help me with a HTML/CSS page for a kiosk? Just need someone to help me set up the initial template, shouldnt take more than an hour if anyone has time to spare. I've been trying to do it myself but I keep screwing up div alignment.27

Optics matter. You could be doing a shit job (as a developer), but if you keep up the good optics with the boss, agreeing to build a calculus app in the future, even though the multiplication api you are currently working on keeps throwing error, you'll look good.2

Always keep pushing your boundaries.
Don't stay too long on anyone thing
i.e. Keep learning new stuff once you are confident about the old stuff.
Don't worry about the language, pick up one and get started. -
I want to follow Ruby-related news/resources like Twitter, blogs, Medium etc so I can keep up with latest stuff or simply adding to my knowledge. The problem is I just don't have any idea who to follow and what good blogs or website are there. Anyone?1
-
What news sources or blogs do you guys use to keep up with your current stacks, or even use to get into other stacks? For example, I usually keep within the Microsoft world of things, so I spend some time periodically going through patch notes on .net or the latest version of vs. If I want to get out of my comfort zone Ill look at a blog like hanselman, or I used to look at spolsky's blog before he went pretty inactive.

What's it called when you count down to 0 for your versioning instead of up. Once you get to 0 your software updates freezes. I tried searching online but I keep getting counting for "for loops." This is eating at me lol.

The 6/30 LineageOS took ~4hrs to do the in place upgrade but ended up bricking my phone.
But this time I'm fully prepared! Side loaded from my dad's PC which I set up last week ago to try out TWRP and reflash Open GApps.
It only took 1hr, mostly from sideloading, and also reloaded a newer Open GApps.
And now my GPS location issue is fixed... Which is the main reason I keep updating...9
