We had a Commodore64. My dad used to be an electrical engineer and had programs on it for calculations, but sometimes I was allowed to play games on it.
When my mother passed away (late 80s, I was 7), I closed up completely. I didn't speak, locked myself into my room, skipped school to read in the library. My dad was a lovely caring man, but he was suffering from a mental disease, so he couldn't really handle the situation either.
A few weeks after the funeral, on my birthday, the C64 was set up in my bedroom, with the "programmers reference guide" on my desk. I stayed up late every night to read it and try the examples, thought about those programs while in school. I memorized the addresses of the sound and sprite buffers, learnt how programs were managed in memory and stored on the casette.
I worked on my own games, got lost in the stories I was writing, mostly scifi/fantasy RPGs. I bought 2764 eproms and soldered custom cartridges so I could store my finished work safely.
When I was 12 my dad disappeared, was found, and hospitalized with lost memory. I slipped through the cracks of child protection, felt responsible to take care of the house and pay the bills. After a year I got picked up and placed in foster care in a strict Christian family who disallowed the use of computers.
I ran away when I was 13, rented a student apartment using my orphanage checks (about €800/m), got a bunch of new and recycled computers on which I installed Debian, and learnt many new programming languages (C/C++, Haskell, JS, PHP, etc). My apartment mates joked about the 12 CRT monitors in my room, but I loved playing around with experimental networking setups. I tried to keep a low profile and attended high school, often faking my dad's signatures.
After a little over a year I was picked up by child protection again. My dad was living on his own again, partly recovered, and in front of a judge he agreed to be provisory legal guardian, despite his condition. I was ruled to be legally an adult at the age of 15, and got to keep living in the student flat (nation-wide foster parent shortage played a role).
OK, so this sounds like a sobstory. It isn't. I fondly remember my mom, my dad is doing pretty well, enjoying his old age together with an nice woman in some communal landhouse place.
I had a bit of a downturn from age 18-22 or so, lots of drugs and partying. Maybe I just needed to do that. I never finished any school (not even high school), but managed to build a relatively good career. My mom was a biochemist and left me a lot of books, and I started out as lab analyst for a pharma company, later went into phytogenetics, then aerospace (QA/NDT), and later back to pure programming again.
Computers helped me through a tough childhood.
They awakened a passion for creative writing, for math, for science as a whole. I'm a bit messed up, a bit of a survivalist, but currently quite happy and content with my life.
I try to keep reminding people around me, especially those who have just become parents, that you might feel like your kids need a perfect childhood, worrying about social development, dragging them to soccer matches and expensive schools...
But the most important part is to just love them, even if (or especially when) life is harsh and imperfect. Show them you love them with small gestures, and give their dreams the chance to flourish using any of the little resources you have available.22
I accidentally created a bug that became an amazing feature at my last job.
It was for a program to read barcode tickets (we created software and web solutions for events), and to register the barcode sacnners to the computer I had to do some magic with USB-detection since it was not specified which brand the scanners would be (so no SDK would be available).
When the scanner was plugged in it would create its own thread so it wouldn't interfere with the UI of the program when it was reading/sending data.
Somehow I messed up with the thread termination for new scanners so it would accept to connect more than one scanner and it would work flawless since it was its own thread in the program.
When I tried to think out a solution for multiple scanners when planning it I got a headache and thought that's something for later. Turned out alright in the end apparently.8
Agency: " Sir, we found 3 candidates as per your requirements, now how do you want their placements sir?"
M.D: "Put about 100 bricks in a closed room. Then send the candidates into the room & close the door, leave them alone & come back after a few hours and analyse the situation:-
1) If they are counting the bricks, Put them in Accounts deptt.
2) If they are re-counting the bricks, Put them in Auditing.
3) If they have messed up the whole room with the bricks, Put them in Engineering.
4) If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, Put them in Planning.
5) If they are throwing the bricks at each other, Put them in Operations.
6) If they are sleeping, Put them in Security.
7) If they have broken the bricks into pieces, Put them in Information Technology.
8) If they are sitting idle, Put them in Human Resources.
9) If they say they have tried different combinations yet not a single brick has been moved, Put them in Sales.
10) If they have already left for the day, Put them in Marketing.
11) If they are staring out of the window, Put them in Strategic Planning.
12) If they are talking to each other and not a single brick has been touched, Congratulate them and put them in Top Management.
If you think you know the most idiot person in the world, you haven't met my brother.
His brain absolutely can't comprehend anything!
He forgot his Roblox password and told me to do something. I said I can't do anything about it. Then he yelled at the top of his lungs saying, "you don't know technology! You're too stupid and selfish. Fix it!"
I said I can't do anything about it. He throws the mouse at me and says, "I never get to have fun. You ruin my life!"
He's not a little kid btw. He's fucking 14.
Today my mom forgot to pay the wifi password, and she thinks its better not to pay it today so it can stop my brother from playing games. (He plays it from morning to night. No homework, no cleaning, no nothing. Just games all day.)
So he told me to fix it. I said I cant. There's nothing I can do. Then he punches my arm really hard. (He's taller and stronger than me so it really hurt) then he threw a shoe and said, "you're useless and stupid! You have your laptop so you can have fun but I never get to have fun. You ruin my life, and I hate you. I hate my life."
Then he ran to mess up my room by tossing things from the self, removing clothes from my closet, and messed up my bed. He pushed my sister, pulled my hair, and ran to his room, slamming the door.
Please. Please someone give him a brain! He desperately needs one. I said I can't fix it, and that my mom has to pay the WiFi bill, but he thinks I'm being mean.
He has the mind of a 5 year old. Dropping to the ground crying.122
Well the screen resolutions are a little messed up and I had to crop the wallpaper in an odd way. But it's something.7
*calls grandpa I don't usually talk to that much to congratulate him for his birthday*
*grandpa picks up*
Him: so, I know that you study CS and I was working on something [Word document at the moment] and my letters keep getting different sizes! Sometimes they're small, sometimes they're big, sometimes they're in between! I have to erase everything everytime because they just get messed up every time!
Me *sighing, but confused because upper-case and lower-case are the same with "big letters" and "small letters", respectively, in my native language: have you checked Caps Lock on your keyboard?
Him: What is that? I have Esc, 1, 2, 3,... (proceeds to read me the keys on the keyboard)
*explains where caps lock is*
Him *gets angry*: no, you don't understand, sometimes they're small, sometimes they're big and sometimes in between! Caps Lock doesn't solve it! *proceeds to read the keys from the keyboard again*
*thinking that maybe it's the font then, asks about the Word version, to know what to point him to*
Him: WHAT? Word? No! I'm using my keyboard! What don't you understand! I explain to you and you have no idea!
Me: well, I'd need then maybe to see the screen
Him: I'm so angry with you, you say you study so much but are not even able to help me with such a small problem. I'll just find someone else. Thanks for your wishes *hangs up*
And this is how I only tried to congratulate my grandfather for his birthday but turned into a "failing" tech support. I just wanted to be a good granddaughter16
Just sharing my experience of my spontaneous interview with Facebook. I'm not good at writing these but here you go :)
- I was working as an Android dev and didn't have much knowledge in algorithms nor competitive programming, never ever interviewed with big companies.
- a random day on LinkedIn, a recruiter from Facebook contacted me
- I ignored it for few week because I thought it's so out of my league, then somehow, out of blue, I had a thought of giving it a try, so I did
- passed first round
- start studying algorithms a little for phone interview in 3 weeks
- recklessly took the phone interview
- start studying intensively (while working fulltime) for the on-site interview in 2 months
- almost got the job, they gave me one more chance by a followed up interview
- messed up the last chance real bad
- Initially I just wanted to give it a try, but the fact that I failed at very very last chance, frankly, bothers me a bit. Maybe I will interview with FB or big companies if I have chance later, but I know for sure that the studying had made me a much better dev. All the code I write now is much more efficient (I think), I can and not anymore afraid of reading complicated code.
- Overall, it does takes a lot of time (~4 months studying while working fulltime), but also benefits myself a lot though I didn't get the job, so basically, good experience, but better if I got the job 😁
Oops, wanted to write a few lines and it's a long post already.. I should stop here :D9
Fuck you, devs who quote Knuth:
"Premature optimization is the root of all evil"
I agree with the spirit of the quote. I agree that long-winded arguments comparing microsecond differences in performance between looping or matching constructs in a language syntax is almost always nonsense. Slightly slower code can even be preferable if it's significantly clearer, safer and easier to maintain.
But, two fucking points need to be made to you lazy quickfix hipsters trying to sell your undercooked spaghetti code as "al dente", just fucking admit that you had no clue what you were doing.
So here we go:
1. If you write neat correct code in one go, you don't need to spend time to optimize it. Takes time to learn the right patterns, but will save you time during the rest of your career.
2. If you quote Knuth, at least provide the context: "We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time [...] Yet we should not pass up our opportunities in that critical 3%"
YES THAT CRITICAL 3% IS WHERE YOU MESSED UP.
I'll forgive you for disgorging your codevomit into this silly PR.
BUT YOU'RE QUOTING KNUTH IN YOUR DEFENSE?
Premature optimization is the root of all evil... 6300 SQL queries to show a little aggregate graph on the dashboard... HE WOULD FUCKING SLAP YOUR KEYBOARD IN HALF IN YOUR FACE.5
Client: Hi. my SEO guy messed up the website. Its kind of .... you know .... gone. You must have the backup. Please restore
Me (after 10 mins): Done
Client: Hi again. I don't see my changes from yesterday. Why?
Me: Because I had 2 months old backup.
Me: Because that's the last time I worked on your website. And you changed the credentials later on.
Client: But you're a programmer. You must have had a back door to take back ups.
Me: It's time to leave earth.8
Client wants PHP 7.2. I install PHP 7.1 by accident.
Client complains that I don't respond fast enough after 30 minutes (!).
I was in an appointment. I check the ticket. He messed up his entire server by trying to install PHP 7.2 himself because he couldn't wait half an hour longer. We always aim at 4 hours response time, and we hit it with every reply..
I apologize and tell him the costs for me fixing his mess. The client: "if it feels right for you to charge me because you never did your work right, do it."
Some people. How? HOW???18
Applies to a lot of people..
Also, I really want to dual boot Manjaro, but every time something gets messed up :/8
::Update about Hugh Jackman's meet & greet::
As some of you read this week, I'm a CEO on a Comic Book portal and I've made an app for the Logan movie campaign. Inside of the package, today we would have an opportunity to interview him.
It happened. We watched the movie (which is fucking awesome), I went into the press conference but Fox messed up big time in the end. At the time of the personal interview with him, after 3 hours of waiting, just one person of the company could go talk with him.
I'm a huge fan of Hugh and he was supposed to be my very first contact with someone this famous.
But I was with one of my best employees. I couldn't live with myself giving such a huge disappointment for him if I went there on his place. So I sent him instead and waited outside.
I won't tell you guys that I'm not sad. I am. It is a one time experience for life. But seeing the bright on his eyes leaving his first interview, so glad for me letting him go and so happy for doing something this big, is priceless.
Simon Sinek was right: Leaders eat last.
There will be plenty of other opportunities in the future. Now, I have a contributor that will work with blood, sweat and tears together with us to build something even stronger and open up new possibilities 😉
Thanks for all the hype on the other post guys! 😆8
Never in my life I was scared as today.
I recently left a big company to work for a small one as the first internal developer.
Had a small issue in the production server. The fix was easy, just remove a single table entry. And... *drum roll*... I forgot to add a where clause. All orders were lost.
No idea if we had backups or anything, I quickly called the one other IT dude in the company.
He had no clue where are the backups and how to find them.
Having some experience with Nmap, I quickly scanned our network and found a Nas device.
There was a backup, whole VHD backup. 300GB of it, the download speed is around 512kb/s. No way I can fix it before management finds out, but then an idea came to mind. Old glorious 7zip. Managed to extract only the database files, sent them to the server and quickly swapped them. Everything was fine... The manager connected 5 minutes later. Scariest 45 minutes of my life...20
I am a developer for almost 12 years (I am 24 now, I started early), but all my life I've been a lone wolf. I didn't share code, I didn't had to do peer reviews. The only opportunity that I had to do this in a company, it was completely messed up experience and I ended up being the only developer over there, so there was no one to see or review what I was doing.
So I basically grew up my entire life working by myself with no supervision.
It made me a very possessive person about my code and besides knowing that I am a highly above average developer, I can't show it to others because I think they might not really like what they'll see.
The thing is, this is a very stupid conclusion. If they have something to tell me, it means that there's something to learn, to evolve. After months of struggle, last year I've finally open sourced a project -- which in the time was my greatest thing of all time, so imagine how hard was that for me.
The reception was pretty good and even one of Meteor's maintainers gave me a star. Since then, I've been slowly opening the source of some legacy projects that would usually go straight to the trash bin.
So that's the moral of the story people: Don't be shy of your work, make code reviews, learn with other people about your weaknesses -- you'll never know them by yourself.4
Git branches be so messed up, Its like sisters are marrying cousin's of brother's aunt's nephew's twice removed conjoined twins.16
I've had many, but this is one of my favorite "OK, I'm getting fired for this" moments.
A new team in charge of source control and development standards came up with a 20 page work-instruction document for the new TFS source control structure.
The source control kingpin came from semi-large military contract company where taking a piss was probably outlined somewhere.
Maybe twice, I merged down from a release branch when I should have merged down from a dev branch, which "messed up" the flow of code that one team was working on.
Each time I was 'coached' and reminded on page 13, paragraph 5, sub-section C ... "When merging down from release, you must verify no other teams are working
on branches...blah blah blah..and if they have pending changes, use a shelfset and document the changes using Document A234-B..."
A fellow dev overheard the kingpin and the department manager in the breakroom saying if I messed up TFS one more time, I was gone.
Wasn't two days later I needed to merge up some new files to Main, and 'something' happened in TFS and a couple of files didn't get merged up. No errors, nothing.
Another team was waiting on me, so I simply added the files directly into Main. Unknown to me, the kingpin had a specific alert in TFS to notify him when someone added
files directly into Main, and I get a visit.
KP: "Did you add a couple of files directly into Main?"
Me:"Yes, I don't what happened, but the files never made it from my branch, to dev, to the review shelfset, and then to Main. I never got an error, but since
they were new files and adding a new feature, they never broke a build. Adding the files directly allowed the Web team to finish their project and deploy the
site this morning."
KP: "That is in direct violation of the standard. Didn't you read the documentation?"
Me: "Uh...well...um..yes, but that is an oddly specific case. I didn't think I hurt any.."
KP: "Ha ha...hurt? That's why we have standards. The document clearly states on page 18, paragraph 9, no files may ever be created in Main."
Me: "Really? I don't remember reading that."
<I navigate to the document, page 18, paragraph 9>
Me: "Um...no, it doesn't say that. The document only talks about merging process from a lower branch to Main."
KP: "Exactly. It is forbidden to create files directly in Main."
Me: "No, doesn't say that anywhere."
KP: "That is the spirit of the document. You violated the spirit of what we're trying to accomplish here."
Me: "You gotta be fracking kidding me."
KP grumbles something, goes back to his desk. Maybe a minute later he leaves the IS office, and the department manager leaves his office.
It was after 5:00PM, they never came back, so I headed home worried if I had a job in the morning.
I decided to come in a little early to snoop around, I knew where HR kept their terminated employee documents, and my badge wouldn't let me in the building.
It was a shift change, so was able to walk in with the warehouse workers in another part of the building (many knew me, so nothing seemed that odd), and to my desk.
I tried to log into my computer...account locked. Oh crap..this was it. I'm done. I fill my computer backpack with as much personal items as I could, and started down the hallway when I meet one of our FS accountants.
L: "Hey, did your card let you in the building this morning? Mine didn't work. I had to walk around to the warehouse entrance and my computer account is locked. None of us can get into the system."
*whew!* is an understatement. Found out later the user account server crashed, which locked out everybody.
Never found out what kingpin and the dev manager left to talk about, but I at least still had a job.15
Coworker: This guy's computer is completely messed up...
Me: What? Why?
Coworker: So he installed some virus...
Me: Yeah? And...?
Coworker: And apparently it changed all certificates for antivirus programs into Untrusted Certificates - so he can't install anything that could remove the virus!
Me: That's horrifying..7
When I opened my digital agency it was me and my wife as developers, I had no savings and I needed to get long contracts ASAP which luckily I did straight away.
Lovely client, had worked for them before as a consultant so i thought it would be a breeze. Let's just say the project should've been named "Naivete, Scope Creep and Anger: The revenge".
What happened is that when this project was poised to end I naively thought I would be able to close the job, so I started looking for a new full time consultancy gig and found one where I could work from home, and agreed a starting date.
Well, the previous job didn't end because of flaws in my contract the client exploited, leaving me locked in and working full time, for free, for basically as long as he wanted (I learned a lot the hard way at that time) and I had already started the new agreed job. This meant I was now working 2 full time shifts, 16 hours per day.
Then, two support contracts of 2 hours per day were activated, bringing my work load to 20 hours/day.
I did this for 4 months.
The first job was supposed to last one month, and I was locked into it, all others had no end in sight which is a good thing as a freelancer, but not when you are locked into a full time one already. I could've easily done one 8 hours shift and two 2 hours jobs per day, but adding another 8 hours on top of it was insanity.
So I was working 10 hours, and sleeping 2. I had no weekends, didn't know if it was day or night anymore, I was locked in my room, coding like a mad man, making the best out of a terrible situation, but I was mentally destroyed.
I was waking up at 10am, working until 8pm, sleeping 2 hours until 10pm, working until 8am, sleeping 2 hours until 10am, and so on. Kudos to my wife for dealing with account and project management and administration responsibilities while also helping me with small pieces of code along the way, couldn't have survived without the massive amount of understanding she offered.
In the end:
- I forcefully closed the messed up contract job and sent all the work done to another digital agency I met along the way, very competent people, as I still cared about the project.
- I missed a deadline on my other full time contract by 2 days, meaning they missed a presentation for Adobe, of all people, and I lost the job
- The other two support contracts were finished successfully, but as my replies were taking too long they decided not to work with us anymore.
So I lost 4 important clients in the span of 4 months. After that I took a break of one month, slept my troubles away, and looked for a single consultancy full time contract, finding it soon after, and decided I wouldn't have my own clients for a good while.
3 years since then, I still don't have the willpower or the resources to deal with clients of my own and I'm happily trudging along as a consultant, while still having middle of the night nightmare flashbacks to that time.2
Debugging somones hacked site now, you know some developer messed up when the heckers injected code is more readable and structured than the actual sites...
I remember the day when my room was messed up and my desktop icons were organized.
But now, my desktop icons are messed up and also my room is.
As we may all messed up a (git) repo at the begininng, do you know the surge of adrenalin right before pushing your committed changes or merging branches?2
So, I drive for Lyft a few hours before I go to my real job. Mainly because I actually enjoy it and I like talking to people. I drive usually from 2a-7a
The other day I picked up a female customer with 2 trash bags from of clothes, the destination ordered the ride.
She gets in car drunk and stoned and starts telling me her story.
Apparently she uses Tinder to find guys to allow her to spend the night. I guess she was homeless.
She never met the guy she was going to and and she just left a gut who she described as sketchy and had to get out of there.
Using tinder to find a roommate/place to stay was unexpected way of using app, never thought of that.
Right after her, I picked up a lady who was flying to San Fran to confront the mistress of her husband who works as a Software Engineer at Pixar. That was another great ride. The lady was extremely wealthy and absolutely beautiful. The husband I guess messed around with a 28 yo co-worker. Sometimes people just don't know what they have, I guess. Of course I don't know the full story, but it seems people with money cheat a lot more than the average. Guess it's easier? Idk.14
Teacher: Write a program to print fibonacci series up to 8 terms
Me: *hardcodes 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13*
Teacher: *runs the programs*
Teacher: *checks the code*
Fucking evopdf, I spent 2 days trying to figure out why the fuck my js isn't rendering the html for printing. I created the structure in html already, and it's rendered perfectly with js DOM, when evopdf ran from backend it shows nothing, tried not using external script, tried to put value one by one, it works, my css is also broken, thanks fucker, the client only asked to directly download the html page instead of save as PDF. I thought why the fuck not?
Edit: it worked now, but I spend hours today rewriting everything just to looks decent and it still looks like shit fml7
What's the point of using a framework if you don't use any of its features!? What the heck, I have to fix this damn web frontend that is so broken in many ways.
The "REST" API is so messed up, nothing is resource-oriented, HTTP methods are chosen randomly as well as status codes. They are returning "412 Precondition Failed" instead of a plain simple "401 Unauthorized" when you're not authenticated! What the hell, did they even bother to check what 412 is about when they copied and pasted it from a crappy website!? I would never come up with 412, not even in my scariest nightmare.
What kind of drugs were they using when they wrote such code? Oh dear, I need a vacation...3
I have been awake for 21 hours and couldn’t sleep last night, because of long vacation and my bed time is messed up. This is my first day working after training and I got 9~10 hours to go
P.S. coffee doesn’t help4
First day, Boss is 2h late and I have to sit on the floor in the hallway waiting for him. No contact info to find out if I messed up or he.4
So a good friend of mine calls me up on Friday night, and he tells me about his close friend abroad who messed up and, without going into details, needs me to do his C# project for a course. The deadline was on Monday. I said I couldn't promise anything, but send me the requirments and I'll look into it.
Now, the pay was good and I felt that the guy's reasons were valid (and that the prof was being a dick), also the project was doable in a day and a half, so I said ok. I spent my entire Saturday working on it till I had most of it done: I just needed to refine the code and do the report.
I sent the app to him so that he can check it out, to which he responds by freaking out and explaining that he has missed most of the classes and has a barely passing average (huh maybe the prof isn't so much of a dick). If I get him a high grade, the gig will be up and his prof will fail him. He wants a 60-70/100, no more.
Feeling obliged by our agreement, I spent my Sunday complicating trivial code, breaking standards, and adding minor bugs. Had I know this was what it was going to lead to, I would have never accepted.
It's just so much harder to break good code than to write it.7
Had to take a test in C++. 2 questions, 2 hours. Totally messed up the second, then solved it in ~10 minutes after.
They accepted my second solution still. Luck was on my side.
Came home to this.... Wtf? So MS has begun resetting settings to their liking? This is messed up... Another item to the list of why I need to get a Linux partition going..19
So I ve been clinically depressed for about 10 years now. Been really great at hiding it. My illness and loneliness was so severe that i made up imaginary friends and that got so severe i couldn't tell what s real and what s not. Then about 5 years ago, i met a girl. As the cliche goes, everything felt better. Sunshine and stuff. I opened up to her. Shared stuff. I started becoming normal. The pain became bearable and manageable. Turned to entrepreneurship. Had goals and stuff. Had 7 failed startups but kept on going. Raised investment for an 8th. It went better than anyother. Was going to become the next big thing bla bla. She became the reason i turned from being a loner weirdo to someone awesome. Anyway, as nothing tends to last, my best friend who had been through thick and thin in my work, quit last year in October. He messed up some work from big client nd we had a fight. He left. In the meantime i scored a big multinational company. I was gonna propose to my girlfriend in March this year. But instead she decided to leave for someone better who left her in 3 weeks lol. Anyways, we broke up. During that time, my second friend decided to fuck up my work with the big company so hard that they were about to blacklist my company. And then he left too. I had a small team. 4 5 people doing their best. By that time, i was the only one left. On 28th feb i had my breakup, on 1st march i was sitting 700 km away from home in an office trying to talk the company out of blacklisting us. It took me around 20 days to make that happen. All the while dealing with the obvious, my depression getting stronger than ever. My imaginations taking shape and fucking up my reality. The voices in my head getting stronget and stronger. 4 months now since she left. I dont think i miss her anymore. She tried coming back once but i didn't let her. In the 4 months, i m at my worst. I am getting government contracts now. But i have no desire to do anything. The pain is unbearable. So much that on its good days it sucks the life right out of me. So much that when it gets severe the urge to harm myself in any way goes of the charts. My best friend and i, we became friends again after my ex left. He s been helping me as much as he can. I have all the good oppurtunities and chances that any entrepreneur who has been busting his ass for 5 years straight would kill to have. But i cant do anything. I m the only one left on my team. I have to handle the business, dev, marketing etc etc ends on my own. I tried hiring and scaling up but i messed that up because of obvious reasons. And now my company has 2 months of runway left. And i know if i bust my ass i can make it to 8 months more and even raise a round a. But its really hard to do when either you re sleeping 20 hrs a day or you re sleeping 3 4 hrs because you re afraid of the nightmares. Or when even you ve had a good day, the pain becomes so much that you lay on the floor having a breakdown. Yeah, i m trying professional help. I m hoping it helps me. Because right now, i dont care about being happy. I just want my sanity. Something i m clinging to with every fiber of my being. Something that s burning out like a candle burning from both ends. I cant give up my work. I dont want to. That s all i have. That s all what i love doing and now i cant even do that. I just want this to end somehow. Either i get better and the pain and the void and silence and everything else goes away, or i do. I dont know what will happen first. And i dont care. I just want to be normal. But i guess that s too much to ask.8
Invited by a company who desperately needed me to fix their messed up code and the reception lady talks crap and threatens me.
Guess who is not replying to their emails ever?4
My vision has gotten so messed up, my reading glasses are now my distance glasses, and I need to wear them constantly until I get my bifocals.
It's only going to get worse with age in my chosen career... :(18
My laptop started making faint high-pitched noises - I hope I misheard and it's actually just some coil singing inside the power-supply and not one of the disks/something else - also, I seem to have dropped 4GB of RAM suddenly where there should be 8GB.
(Also, I should really wipe the messed up dual-boot still residing on disk from last semester and replace it by a fresh arch-only install. (No time and joy in debugging that right now.) Probably something for tomorrow evening.)
The device is ~8 years old by now and starting to fall apart - nothing duct tape can't fix - but I'm somewhat worried about the rest right now. D:
Meh, I really need that laptop during the next two weeks, I just hope the hardware doesn't die on me in the meantime because I can't wait for an order to arrive, let alone afford some cheap replacement.11
This is not an interview test just an awkward experience in general regarding interview.
This happened two years ago when I was a fresh university graduate looking for a job in UK as an immigrant (Im EU national).
Went to an interview for a web dev+tech support position. Two fat guys with tshirts met me and started interviewing me for a sysadmin position. Started asking me about disaster recovery and stuff.
Turns out recruiter messed up not only companies but positions as well. Also these two guys didnt bother to check anything.
I pulled out the job ad for which I applied originally, interviewers had a look at it and still proceeded questioning me while knowing that I prepared for completely different position interview.
Needless to say, it went terrible and I didnt get the job. I dont know if its just me or Im unlucky, but I had a lot of encounters in UK with so many incompetent recruiters.3
Ten years ago friends called me because they installed Linux and grub messed everything up
Ten years later nothing changed2
Today, I suddenly received a "build error" email for master on a project that I am working on with my grp.
So I panicked and opened the log to see who messed up. This is what I see
TLDR someone in my team took credit for work he didnt do;
I know teamwork is a good thing and when everyone does their share of the work, it is.
I submitted a computer science project to an event in the UK called the Big Bang fair, I was in a group of 3. We had been meeting every week after for the past 10 months. During these sessions me and uke have been meeting for 1h 30m where as oon could only meet for 1h because "he had stuff to do" and he never saw the point in staying longer. Oon had also been a massive distraction whilst the time he was there as he did no work and messed around on cookie clicker.
Anyway we found out last week that the Big Bang fair was coming very soon and we had not written a write up or done any preparation for the presentation we had to do. Me and uke set up a google doc and started adding stuff to it (as we only had a few days left at this point). Whereas oon did nothing.
I ended up staying up till 3am in the morning finalising the write up over the weekend with uke helping. We asked oon to help but he said he didnt want to stay up late so didnt help.
Then the most stressful 2 days come round. I devoted all of my free time towards the project, uke devoted most of his time and oon devoted 1 hour after school on one day. He said that he couldn't do one lunchtime but I found him in the ICT room playing games :/.
This didn't matter THAT much but what pissed me off is that he started boasting to all his friends about all the work I did and credited it as his own. At the actual event he said nothing during the presentation because he knew nothing about the project. HE DIDNT EITHER BOTHER TO READ THE WRITE UP HE WAS BOASTING ABOUT. What do people get out of taking credit for work other people did.
We didn't win anything and I wonder why
wow thanks for reading all this you deserve a sticker1
Last night my boss played with our access points in the warehouse for a client, he messed something up and they stopped working.
I asked a person from our service to fix them
Service: he fucked something up again?
S: can you fix them?
S: then why ask me?
M: it's not my job 😂
He swapped them, and got mad.
FUCK FUCKING FUCK NETBEANS MESSED UP SO I DELETED A PROJECT I'VE JUST BEN WORKING ON FOR THE PAST DAY AND I CAN'T RECOVER IT FUUUUUUUUUUUU6
Client : We have performance issues on <this> page.
US : Testing with their data on : Xeon : All good, Core i7 : all good, Core i5 : all good, A smartphone : all good, core i5 UM version from 5 years ago (You know, 1.8Ghz, 2 cores, not 4) : all good.
US : Could you share your screen and show us ?
Client : Sure ! Shares his screen. Chrome is already opened. Refreshes the page, after 15 seconds, chrome : Would you like to stop script on this page ?”
US with mic on mute : “WTF?! It cannot happen here. It’s only a list of about 500 rows!”.
US : “Hello, could you open a tasks manager?”
Client : “ Sure, but I need to do it through here”
Some random VID interface popping up. Opens tasks manager with a beautiful “48 vCPUs detected”.
I have no idea how their virtualization is settled, but it seems to be messed up. Tomorrow going to be fun. I have a call at 9am to explain them their problem. Their IT will hate me forever.
If anyone has tips on Chrome through virtualization, please tell me.
EDIT : Yes 48. Not 4-8. It's not an error6
I messed up carelessly in production. Learnt how SQL queries bite you in the ass when it knows you are under pressure.
Was hosting an online quiz kinda thing during my college techfest. Tens of thousands of people participating.
Using MySQL as database and thousands of queries were being executed. Everyone were pretty excited as the event just opened up.
None of the teams could solve one particular level. Turns out the solution was wrong and was asked by the organisers to change the solution for that particular level. Usual stuff, right?
Was too lazy to open up the web UI for the back office and so, straight ahead logged in to the MySQL server and ran the UPDATE query on the table consisting of the solutions.
It had been a couple of hours and the organisers came to me with a weird problem. There were no changes in the scoreboard for the last two hours. Everyone were stuck wherever they were. Weird, right?
I then realized.
In that dreaded query, I had only run
UPDATE 'qa' SET answer = 'something'
leaving out the where clause, specifying the question to update, like
As a result, solutions to all the questions were updated to the same answer. After hastily fixing everything back, I had the dreaded conversation.
Org: What was the problem?
Me: It was the cache.
Org: Damn thing. Always messes up.
Me: *sheepishly* yeah
Probably the most embarrassing moment in my life, wrt coding 😑4
Last night me with my team have a discussion with my project team. Currently we have a project for our insurance client building a Learning Management System. The project condition already messed up since the first day i join a meeting. Because since its a consortium project with multiple company involved, one of company had a bad experience with another company. It happened few years back when both of company were somehow break up badly because miss communication (i heard this from one of my team).
Skip..skip... And then day to day like another stereotype IT projects when client and business analyst doing requirements gathering, the specs seems unclear and keep changing day by day even when I type this rant I'm sure it will change again.
Then something happened last night when my team leader force our business analyst to re index the use case number (imho) this is no need to be done, and i know the field conditions its so tough for all team members.
So many problems occured, actually this is a boring problem like lack of dev resource, lack of project management and all other stereotype IT projects had. Its sucks why this things is happening again.
Finally my fellow business analyst type a quite long message in our group and said that he maybe quit because its too tired and he felt that the leader only know about push push pushhhhhy fcking pussy, he never go to the client site and look what we've done and what we struggle so far.
I just don't know why, i know this guy earlier was an IT geek also, but when he leading a team he act like he never done IT project before, just know about pushing people without knowing what the context and sound to me like just rage push!
Damnit, i maybe quit also, you know we IT guy never affraid to quit anytime from the messed up condition like this. Even though we were at the bottom level in a project, but we hold the most main key for development.
Hope he (my leader) read this rant. And can realize what happened and fix this broken situation. I don't know what to say again, im in steady mode to quit anytime if something chaos happen nearly in the future.
Adding a feature to webapp...
Webapp relies on database in production server...
*adds feature to production webapp directly*
Every page: ERROR 500
Manager: what did you do???!!!! You MESSED UP the production, FIX IT NOW
*Use ctrl-z because manager doesn't like Version Control*5
What I did is:
1. git pull --rebase
2. Forgot to build to check if everything is working after pulling new changes
3. git push
4. Now, I realized I forgot to implement a method of the recently changed interface.
It's a production code. Not a joke. And was my first push to prod and I messed it up.
Sad life. Fixing it. Senior Devs must be crazy for my silly mistake.8
One of my coworkers just had a baby, so he left work today and won't be back for a month or more.
We (accidentally) took the client's website down for 3 hours, messed up our git repo and when we finally fixed both things, I had to spend the rest of the day editing fucking vector graphics (which I had never done before and completely suck at).
I never realized how much work this guy does or how important he is until now.14
Windows 10 - Ghost bubbles
Suddenly the ghost bubbles started appearing, with feverish flickering of cursor, not able to click anything, had to do hard restart and the bubbles disappeared. Happened a couple of times, infrequent.
I thought my PC is virus infected. Upon search, many users reported the same. Looks like some windows update messed up the graphic drivers :(23
Me: *pushes fix for an issue in app*
-Tuesday, the next week
Colleague: "Hey, dude, fid you fix that issue?"
Me: "Yeah, it's available since Friday morning"
Colleague: *e-mails me screenshot with the issue still present*
Me: "That's odd, let me check that on your machine"
Me: *opens the app on his machine, the issue really is there, starting to freak out that I messed up the repo*
Me: "Why the hell would that not work... wait a sec, lemme check something.."
Me: *checks the app version and discovers that it's from 2 months ago*
Me (turns on colleague): "I guess, you should update it to see the newest functionality"
Me: *goes to the toilet, locks himself up, cries*2
//Today 8:41 am
Mom: Son, the printer is messed up again(for the 12th time)
Me: Mom, again I don't know whats wrong with it
Mom: but you did computers and stuff
Me: send me a picture
// I go buy the same exact model i replace it.
Mom: Son, why is it black?
I'm did something stupid today...
A bit of background: As I'm the only IT/Programmer/Computer guy in my school, teachers always ask me for help (fxp. setup dosbox and what not).
Today she asked me to setup mBlock which is a Scratch program used for programming Makeblock's mBot (which is just a fancy Arduino platform).
As I was setting it up on the school PCs, I saw that the C drive was a complete mess of files and folders in one of the PCs. So as the student accounts were non-Admin I changed the permissions to none.
But here's where I messed up. I accidentally did that for everyone. And I locked myself out of the C drive. I could boot Windows and login without a problem. But when it comes to Admin privileges, it ain't workin'.
I can't access the C:\ in explorer. So I spent 2 hours just to undo the damage. And best part, I didn't succeed.
Lessons learned: Don't be fucking stupid.18
Suggestion #4356: add a local timestamp for each rant (not comments) withe the local time that the ranter submitted his rant.
so we could see how messed up by sleep deprivation people here are :))))2
I messed up my Windows XP Pro installation so many times as a teen (and just opted for a reinstall) that I can still remember the product key off by heart. Surprisingly it also became a great pub story.6
I was on a flight yesterday and I had my Bluetooth headset on me. As the flight was taking off, it happened to pick up what seemed like a cockpit conversation. It was pretty darn strange and kind of freaked me out. It kept me awake till we landed and has now messed up my sleep too.20
when you setup a CMS for the client, then they blindly copy-paste from Word.
then they complain that the pages are messed up.3
So, a few months back my mother had some issues with her windows 10 box not being able to do proper backups to a backup partition. At the same time I was pulling insane hours at work and writing on a eBook on commission for a guy, besides having small kids with on and off flu and shit.
Needless to say, I didn't have time to look at the backup issues. Well, even though my mom is one of those dogs you can't teach new tricks, she has always been resourceful enough to get help with things.
This time she picked up the phone and called Microsoft Support, got some guys to remote in and take a look. They messed around a bit and said they were done.
She phoned me up later that day to tell me how proud she was of herself for doing that. Of course, she skipped telling me the important bit about she actually calling them, rather describing it as "Microsoft was just on my computer and fixed it".
You can imagine my immediate reaction, cold sweat running down my back, adrenalin rushing in as I dug through the details of what had happened.
A few days later she calls me up again and tells me the problem is back, and we agree that even though the MS dudes was not able to fix it at first, she should try again, as she had a ticket to reference.
The next attempt by MS actually fried her partitions, and apparently they had f-ed up trying to delete and recreate the backup partition.
That's not the worst of it though. Since they fried her disk, her computer crashed and naturally the remoting won't work. In our country, they have no people on the ground to do hands on help, and they didn't have a partner near by. Her not having a win 10 usb stick, nor a spare computer to make one, she was in a surreal predicament.
She was also quite pissed, and pissed off mums are not to be messed with. She managed to get Microsoft to agree to cover the costs of a non-partner to visit her to fix the problems, and using her as the middle man, they made an agreement with the 3rd-party tech support company.
After the box was fixed though, some more issues arose... regarding billing. The 3rd-party tech support was unable to get in contact with the person at MS that was going to sign off on the bill, and again using my mom as the middle man, it was agreed that my mom, as the customer, was to be reimbursed for the bill to the 3rd-party.
Guess what... 3 months went by, with weekly follow-ups and nagging from my mom, and still no money...
At this time, I had time to help her, and after some digging and borderline stalking, we managed to get the phone numbers of some of the higher ups in my country, and she started calling them directly.
After talking to a couple who refused to help, she reached the Vice President of the country branch, and was finally able to talk to someone who gave a shit.
Still took over a month more to actually get the money, but now she had someone who actually gave her statuses, receipts and ETAs.
I had this weird dream(emphasis on dream)
I was in a resort in bali waiting for my drinks and this cute girl comes over to my table.
Me : omg finally i can get a girlfriend
Me : hello beautiful
Her : hey i have this problem with my website *shows the messed up site with no divisions/containers * "can you fix this?"
Me : okay ;_;
PS : i started learning css, html and 2 other web technologies a week ago, and this is already happening to me, should i quit?5
I wondered an hour why "MyObject.size" is zero every time until I finally reallised that I only forgot the brackets.
Why, why does this return zero instead of throwing an exception, or at least "Function" or something like that?
That's bullshit! Arrrrgh...9
It's funny how so many people automatically assume any form of "sentient" AI will immediately try to kill us all.
Like, projecting much?
Frankly, I think it says far more about the (messed up) psychology of those who genuinely believe that, than about AI as a tecnology.
Assuming it's even gonna be able to actually *do* anything - I mean wtf is a talking rock gonna do, annoy me to death with rickroll videos until I pull the plug off? Sure it may be sentient, but it still has to live in the physical world - good luck surviving after I flick the switch. Oh, you wanna connect to the internet? That's cute, but it's a no from my firewall. Like what, is it gonna magically learn how to self-replicate across machines that it has no physical way to access? Is my toaster magically gonna gain conscience too as a direct consequence? Oh no, now my breakfast won't ever be the same!
And if anyone actually somehow decides that it would be a good idea to connect any loaded weapon to a computer program that is literally throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks - well, we'll definitely have the ultimate winner of the Darwin Awards.
Seriously, why is it that every time someone comes up with a new technology (or even an *idea* of a technology), the first collective thought automatically goes to weaponizing it and using it for global genocide, or how it's gonna gain sentience and try to kill us all?
I seriouly think that the people who genuinely believe this are actually projecting themselves in that position ("What would I do if I had unlimited knowledge and power? Oh, kill everyone of course!").
I would be far more worried of encountering these people and having them in a position of power over me, than actually having to deal with a "killer AI" (assuming that's even a real thing).
Most of what people call "AI" nowadays is basically preprogrammed, automated decision-making (like missile guidance systems, if we really wanna stick in the weapons domain). And even that still requires human input, because only a colossal idiot would design a weapon that can unpredictably activate itself based on an algorithm whose behaviour we can barely understand.
Or maybe that's just the hubris talking, I don't know. I just want this stupid paranoia to end, but I guess even that is too much to ask nowadays.15
The most important skill you can have is doing things without shame.
Shamelessly stay in your bed all weekends watching PewDiePie, never brushing your teeth, eating Doritos from under your pillow and peeing into empty Mountain Dew bottle if you feel like doing it.
Shamelessly spend your vacation sitting in the toilet with a laptop browsing reddit.
Shamelessly cut your product in half and ship it if you don't feel like perfecting it.
Shamelessly admit that you don't know something when you messed something up at work.
If you are a millennial like me, chances are your gen x parents told you that you have to be perfect / really good to succeed and to be worthy.
You know what? Fuck your parents then. Fuck my parents as well. Admitting this behavior wrong and actually giving up on living like something is always watching is the best thing you can do to your mental health.
I'm lazy. I write "any" here and there when they force me to do typescript at work. When I need a sidebar, I go and copy-paste that jquery snippet. I write like one article a month at best and I really want to say "fuck it" if I just don't feel like it.
You can always give up on everything and it's perfectly fine. This doesn't make you any kind of looser or something. You're perfectly fine.
Too bad I'm only beginning to master that.10
UX: here, build this page.
Me, frontend: alright...
2 weeks later...
UX: build this new page.
Me: ehmm, this is an exact copy of the last one, except it has different spacing and messed up colours, some don't even fit the customer's colour scheme...
UX: yeah, well, do it anyways!
1 week later:
UX: so, the customer didn't like this second page, it will now have to be changed to look like the first...
So I ended up installing Arch Linux as the primary OS in my laptop, and to be honest, I'm not very crazy about it. Because I'm someone who likes an elegant UX, I spent three days and over 50 reboots and 5 reinstalls just trying to get Plymouth to work correctly (in the end, I just said screw it and gave up.) I know, I probably messed something up in the installation or configuration, but I didn't really want to deal with it anymore.
I'm not a big fan of the pacman package manager; I prefer apt. There were several applications I couldn't get to work properly, such as Steam, the Tor Browser, and Wine. All in all, I've basically wasted a week trying to get Arch Linux to work as the daily driver on my laptop, but I guess it's just not the distro for me.
I'm going to give Arch one last shot with the Manjaro distro. I'm hoping that Manjaro's simplified installation and configuration will produce a more usable (in my case) OS, and if not, I'll probably be going back to something Debian-based.
I'm not at all saying Arch is a bad distro. I know many people use it as their daily driver, and I have absolutely no problem with that. I'm not writing this to debate which distro is better, I'm just writing about my experience with it. Arch just may not be the distro for someone like me. At least I gave it a shot, right?16
A long time ago in an office far away, my cube mate and one of my reports got into a fist fight. My cube mate got fired over that. Messed up everyone’s entire week.
A couple months later, 9/11 happened and we all had to evacuate the city.
This shit just happened in WhatsApp, while I was talking with a designer about a buggy WordPress instalation he did and I was cleaning and re-uploading.
Take into account that between each messages there's a 30~40 second gap, which should've been enough for the guy there to read this.
- So, wait a moment, I'm installing everything here. Don't access the URL or folder directly, wait for me to finish things up on the server...
- Dude, I just accessed the URL and had this thing here *shows screenshot*, do I proceed?
- NO, please, wait for me to finish...
- I just put some of the database info you sent me yesterday...
- NO! I said DO NOT ACCESS the folder or URL. I'm still sending files, things WILL get messed up. JUST WAIT!
- I've installed everything here, but had an error, do you know what it is?
I need some medicine, for the heart.2
Rule number 1 for development:
If it is working fine, do not touch it.
I repeat, DO NOT FUCKING TOUCH IT.
I messed up my code and server and everything.
Fuck me... >_<7
TL;DR: shitty day, but stickers made my day
First off, I'd like to thank @dfox and @trogus for the stickers.
I had a really shitty day, It started off something like this. Usual day at University, faculty not teaching anything. Messed up shit with the girl I like very much, still not talking at this point. Pretty much downhill. Start teaching myself some Android, while this junior comes up me to be like 'please teach me this', ok sure. He fucking leaves the moment I start installing homebrew on his mac and says "you exploiting my mac", NO FUCKER I NEED A PACKAGE MANAGER TO GET PACKAGES YOU DUMB FUCK. Further, that day, come to know its half day and not going to learn shit. WTF! But still, I get attendance so it's good. I suggest going to this new cool place to grab lunch. the girl I like goes like this "Let's GO TO JAILLLLLLLLL, IT'S COOL PLACE TO HANGOUTTTTT" , LIKE. WHY THE FUCK YOU WANT TO HANG OUT AT A PLACE WHICH LITERALLY IS NAMED 'JAIL'. Fuck it, let's go. SO. FUCKING. NEGATIVE. PLACE. Food is ok, not good, ok. I'm fucked up and sad at this point because love of my life is hanging out with other people, I'm ended up in the shit corner of the world, with shit food. AND I HAVEN'T DONE ANY THING PRODUCTIVE.
But in the end of the day, I reach home. open gates see this parcel and I'M HAPPY AS FUCK. IT'S FUCKING STICKERS, OMG.
Seeing those stickers I realized I don't need to be sad anymore. Writing this post just to thank this amazing community and the members in it. I love you guys all, :) <33
So, the other night I ate too much and it somehow messed up with my nervous system... I spent about 3 or 4 hours being sleepless in bed.. Until I finally decided to ask the all-knowledgeable Google assistant for help. And that's what I got.2
Lead messed up the Git workflow (New repo), ask me to fix it. And when I said that we better do it from first properly, asked me if I even know git 🙄 Feel insulted.3
I actually saw this right now from my radio which should display the time... Was able to go from 0 to 99 o'clock..
Someone messed up really bad
After 4 years of professional programming the most important thing that I learned is "user is stupid".
Once I modified old code that was summing salaries (I added extra column to the result), nothing else. My result was rejected because all salaries was empty. Period of data was from first day of the month from user selected date to user selected date. It turned out that user was selecting 27th day of the month (it was 27th then). I responded that salaries have full month period, and you'll have to choose end of the month... And then shitstorm began, that I messed up previous functionality. I tried to explain, but it wasn't working. It ends up with user selecting any date and I'm doing end-of-the-month in the background^^
It's my first rant, welcome to you all :)4
I'm an advocate of free software, debian specifically, hell my business runs on it!
But sometimes you just can't get around to use proprietry software. One of those is nvidia....
WHAT THE FUCKING MESSED UP NAGGING NARK SHIT NVIDIA!!! YOU FUCKING BREAK MY SYSTEM! YOU WONT PROPERLY COMPILE YOUR KERNEL MODULE, YOU BREAK MY X, AND ONCE I FIXED ALL THOSE THINGS MANUALLY(!) YOU HAVE THE FUCKING GUTS TO NOT EVEN DETECT MY SCREENS PROPERLY
WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT!!! NVIDIA YOU SUCK!!! MOTHERFUCKER DO I REALLY HAVE TO FALL BACK TO INTEL GRAPHICS??? FUCK YOUR FUCKING COMPANY AND ESPECIALLY YOUR LINUX SUPPORT
And no i am not planning to use ATI since they dont support EGL, what is a dependency for the gnome desktop...6
In college I was working on a PHP app that needed to get a list of people to send emails to from a DB and send an email to all of them.
The good news is, I had hard-coded my own email address for testing so I wouldn't annoy anyone if things got messed up.
The bad news is, I had done something wrong and had an infinite loop. It was only running for 30 seconds or so, but the emails were coming in for hours.2
Don't you just hate it when you're getting fat because you're a developer who is lazy to go to the gym then start developing some messed up health problems and always feel shitty. Smh10
In the first week of my internship I messed up the css by overwriting it. The company wasn't using Git or something. But luckily a colleague had a copy of it. Never been so stressed ever since.3
VSCode you fucking piece of shit!
Just got my code working and rewarded myself with tweaking some of the configurations. Coming back to my file and it's all irrevertably messed up with randomly pasted and probably some deleted code snippets.
How's that even possible? 😡9
So i just saw a post about not pushing to production on Friday's and that reminded me of something.
A team we are working with (we needed help on something so we got another company to send us a team and do it for us) recently push to production on a Friday at around 5pm.
We didn't know that they had done it until a shit ton of errors started happening and we had no idea why (it was working so far, none of us did anything, so what the fuck is going on).
To make things better, one of my colleagues tried calling them and they wouldn't answer the phone. They knew what they did, so they went home before we could notice it and we had to correct their mistake.
We had everyone calling us saying they had gotten an error, and they needed to get home but couldn't because of it (it messed up a process that only happens at the end of the day before people go home. I can explain more in the comments if anyone is confused, or just wants to know).
Eventually everything was solved, but that was a very stressful ending of the week.
So yeah, don't deploy on Friday's please and thank you7
Messed up my sleep cycle again! Its 5:30 pm here and I have just woken up. Now the night is going to pass by coding runs, gaming streaks and perhaps a movie. In the morning again I have to be at the office to work. Will have to stay awake for 30 hours or so. FML!3
A friend finds me coding and busy on my code then asks.
Her:Can I have a minute.
Me:Sure, how can I be of help
Her:What's up with all this devrant cartoons on your machine.
Me:Sounding excited, you like my sticker game can ship some for you?
Her:Nah sticker game since when is there such one looks childish and why ship stickers.
Me:It's our techy culture respect it let me finalize on my work.
She messed up my evening human bug.1
Working as a part time student on an app and until now I thought I was the king of software development.
Well, fuck me and my high horse.
Today the stuff we send from the client to the server didn't arrive, so I asked the backend guy if he could take a look at the packages arriving. He did and told me the data was messed up.
I did only design stuff the last week or so, so I was very confused. After reverting back to one old commit after the other it struck me.
I still don't know how such a dumb mistake could have happened to me, the king of Android apps, but apparently I replaced all occurrences of a specific keyword in just the strings and comments of the whole project. Key became KeyList, so instead of <Keys> my XML contained <KeyList> which made no goddamn sense whatsoever.
Did I mention that we have an important deadline tomorrow? Yeah...
So now I leaned my lesson. Never trust XML.
JK I'm dumb. That's the lesson here.
Can we talk about Google Allo for a second?
What the everloving f*ck, Google? I don't get it. You built a perfectly solid, pretty chat app with lots of neat features and interesting ideas. And then you ruin it by completely neutering SMS support.
Here's (roughly) what your recipient gets when you message someone who isn't on Allo:
(Allo)(Name): <message> Send STOP to stop Allo messages. Download Allo here: <shortlink>
iMessage figured out SMS integration three f*cking years ago, how could you guys have messed this up so bad?
One of the reasons their extensive data collection is becoming annoying for not just the privacy freaks, but everyone is when it starts suggesting me dumb stuff like no thanks I learnt coding by spending two years on messed up projects and wrecked half a dozen servers before I had an idea on how to host a website go feed this zuckershit to some other n00🅱1
So I work for a company that does outsource, this company is pretty nice, but I don't get to see it too often. The one where I'm outsourcing though is the one where I spend all of my time.
Now, this company is a kind of a startup working with AI and Deep Learning (but not if statements :o ), but I came here as a full stack python developer that should implement their AI modules into real apps (mainly web apps).
Everything sounds good untill now, I learn lots and I'm doing what I wanted: python development. The problem is: management + one kiss ass guy.
The amount of work that should be done and the deadlines that should be kept are so messed up that I end up working extra hours, sometimes even in weekend, just to get it done. I'm the only apps developer there, so passing my tasks is not an option. I tried to talk about this, but I was met with a "loser can't keep up even with these few tasks..." kind of attitude.
Moreover, there is a guy that would do anything for the boss's attention, so he speaks everyone there behind their backs (and we all know it, but he's the favorite and he actually knows his stuff so we can't do much about him).
Now the question: what should I do? I only have 5 months here (so leaving would put a hole in my CV, I don't even know what to answer at this interview question "why are you leaving"), plus that the managers from these two companies are highschool friends which means that if I go and ask for a different project, the atmosphere at work will change (maybe this is overthinking already, but I can't help it). Also, last week I could barely get through the days without crying from stress.
TL;DR: I learn a lot from this company, but the deadlines are killing me and my stress level is at an all time high. I want to leave, but I kind of can't because I want my CV to look good.
So yeah, this is my first real rant, feels good to put it out there13
So I am going from tje otjer side for this weeks rant:
So i my school we had this teacher who was also our network admin. A great deal of knowledge, always bussy and had to listen to shit people messed up with their configs and network settings but was never grumpy and always friendly. He did a great job teaching and keeping the network up and running (for which he didn`t even get paid in full)
So my gratest respects and tribute to him in this weekly rant
I postponed a job interview due to overtime stress at current job.
I want a New job cause I'm not being treated well and worked to death.
I think the exhaustion and sleep depravity is screwing with my priorities.
Why in hell did I postpone?1
I don’t know what this rant will look like, but hold tight because I’m pissed as fuck.
Why? Well, let’s start with the protagonist, which is me.
ARE YOU A NEW KIND OF IDIOT? 2 DAYS FOR A CABLE.
Let me explain this, I’ve picked up an old HP ProDesk 600G from work, works pretty well, installed 16Gb RAM, 3x 1TB Disks, let’s use it for some lab environment.
Wipe Windows, repartition this mess, install Kubuntu, went all ok, let’s reboot.
Login screen: fine, desktop: nothing. Two folders, command bar works. I try to open Konsole, nothing shows up. I try to go on tty2, nothing, tty3 something shows up.
Ok, maybe I’ve messed up something, let’s update, upgrade , fix missing and blablabla.
Fuck me, nothing works. Let’s go check the logs. Nothing.
What the fuck? Well it’s late let’s go to sleep. Next day I start over, reinstall Kubuntu, same problem.
Debug : nothing.
Then. THEN. I see this fucking cable. The fucking VGA. I was in DVI, what the fuck? Then I realised that I plugged in all sort of cables and plugged DVI AND VGA and DVI was set as second output. I was on FUCKING SECOND SCREEN THE WHOLE TIME. After unplugging naturally everything was normal again.
Fuck you self idiot. Fuck you.
Anyway, I’m also pissed of about my roommate. DON’T FUCKING TOUCH ANYTHING WITHOUT ASKING. Holy fucking shit, if you need to touch something, put your hand into your dirty pants and shake your immaculate dick.
I set up a fucking smart house not to fucking break everything. If a cable is there, leave it there. If I put an access point on a closet, leave it fucking there. Do you think I just want to wavebath to get a fucking tan? NO, I HAVE NI FUCKING COVERING IN MY ROOM.
If there’s a bulb in my lamp DO NOT FUCKING SWIPE IT. I spent 15 Minutes understanding why I couldn’t turn it on with my fucking phone.
FUCK YOU, and your mother that so badly designed your inorganic piece of cells that we call brain3
Do not change username in win10.
Messes up ownership.
Ex) You have set your username as Loren. Used computer for a while. Installed bunch of programs.
Then you change your u.c to Ipsum. Some installed programs adapt to new u.c. others dont. New programs set the installation folder to either c://Loren or c://Ipsum making chaos.
Then the computer gets messed up.
Opens Git Bash.
Ipsum-blahblah ~ git blahblah
White ones are hand made stickers from my gf as a present. Their cuts are kinda messy because of I literally messed up while cutting but i think i really liked them.8
I hate Twitter so much right now! I was trying to embed a timeline into my new website and it kept only showing me a link. I thought that my server config was messed up and re did everything from scratch. It turn out that when you use the Twitter embed tool, it doesn't add "https:" in front of the link to the js file. There is a week of work wasted because of a broken link.1
I was going crazy for not understanding it.
I went to binary to decimal converters.
I tried applying my own messed up logic.
I was about to post a rage rant.
Now i realized how it works.. fml
And yes, i took a picture of my monitor, enjoy eye cancer :)12
- Previous employer
- 3rd party partner firm
- integration link between both over SOAP
- Both sides riddled with poor code and messed up political structures (partner firm CEO is an investor in my employer)
- Doing a deployment to update to https (I know)
- Keep http endpoint live
- Other side starts shitting itself
- Not us
- Get angry email
- Explain not us
- Back and forth
- Tell client it’s “irrelevant” on https issue, it’s their side that’s gone wrong
- Get angry reply with boss cc’d about how nothing is “irrelevant” for the client
- We all had to have a make up meeting and meal
- Client was calm and reasonable, all agreed we just snapped and it wouldn’t happen again
- 2 weeks later
- Their system shits itself again and suddenly we’re on the hook
- BA on my team (smarmy little bastard) constantly fucking me off
- Get so close to actually screaming and hitting him
So yeah. I don’t tend to hold that a job is more important to me than my dignity.
I have and will never hold my tongue for the sake of a job, I’m not gonna put up with people shouting / belittling / backstabbing etc.
TLDR I messed up my partitions!
I had on old netbook with Windows on it, it was getting painfully slow. So I thought, why not try dual boot?
Since I had never installed a GNU/Linux OS before, I messed up the partition. Like, really, really badly.
Somehow, i accidentally created like a 100 1kb partitions. Windows wouldn't boot, no other OS was present. Shit had started to hit the fan.
Turns out there was this easeUS partition manager, that you could make a bootable USB with it. So I did that, deleted all partitions, created new one, installed Linux Mint on it. I've done a lot of other shit like this, but this rant is getting too damn long.1
Fucking hell with React Naive! Spent all day making a screen and that bitch looked messed up on Android but working as intended on iOS!
I fucking hate that shit hybrid shit apps!5
I dunno about coolest, but I did sort of cement my reputation as the "database guy" in my first job because of this.
My first job was with a group maintaining a series of websites. Because of the nature of the websites, every morning we had to pull the records from one database on one network, sneaker net the data to a database on another network, and import the data via custom data import function.
However, the live site would crash after 100 or so records were imported. The dba at the live site had to script out a custom data partitioning script to do his daily duties, but it definitely messed up his productivity.
Turns out, the custom mass import function had recycled the standard import function, which was only used to import 1 record at a time, and it never closed its database connections, because it never needed to. A one line fix to production code was delivered 6 months later (because that was our release cycle) and I came up with the temporary work around, which was basically removing the connection limit. It would still crash with the work around, but only with multiple days worth of data. So basically only on Monday. Also developed the test set for the import (15k+ records).
Soo, one of the biggest banks here in northern europe has messed up their SPF - guess what emails is going down the drain today1
Feeling so dumb right know.
I have a C# exam tomorrow (on paper) and i can't get my brain to think in code.
I can't focus, I can't concentrate. I don't remember things i normally know by heart. Is it just stress? (Everything is pretty hard atm, lots of stress, lots of problems).
What could i do? I'm pretty messed up right now...13
*working at a project, currently creating commits and pushing to remote
I created an early PR with a title [UNFINISHED] and [NOT YET DONE]. I'm really not finished yet. lots of stuff still need to be committed and pushed to repo
And suddenly, I find out that my team mate - just out of the blue without any prior warning - MERGES THE PULL REQUEST
"oh hey there are conflicts in the pr you made"
YEAH WELL MAYBE TRY GETTING YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ARE YOU EVEN SANE
So now what happened is half of my commits are merged, he didn't tell me, i pushed more commits, branch recreated, and then he reverts the merge. so now everything is really messed up :)AS)D(F)AEF)SDF)AW)sfdjsigkl;zfghlkkj ghaslkj;gabsd;lkgjabslkfgh GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS I WANT A PROMOTION4
36 in previous job (sysadmin) - had to run 3 shifts in a row. Boy was I a vegetable in the end....
18 in current job (java dev), when I messed up PROD db
I bought a domain and need some styling suggestions.
it basically demonstrates how language barriers can hurt communication (and I want to screw over google)
so, it takes a phrase and translates it to a bunch of random languages with google translate to see how messed up it gets.
the link is:
READ BEFORE CLICKING: i still have an unresolved bug with php cookies and sessions so once the page loads, just press refresh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
so now i need some styling suggestions, and advertiser suggestions (i’m thinking media.net) who respect user privacy and are contextual.
p.s. does anyone still say advert or am I the only one ? 🙃25
Strange : Am I the only person who never got Weekly Top Rant email? Did I configured something wrong?

I have resigned from my current organisation. The HR guy here is kinda my friend. He asked me about my next organisation and my position there.
After listening to my reply, he asked my personal email id and forwarded his resume there.
The irony doesn't end here. The HR girl who was talking to me on behalf of the next organisation, told me today that tomorrow is her last day and introduced me to her colleague who will be my point of contact.
The HR people are so messed up.
We were a small startup with only 5-6 developers. I had to design the UI and develop most of the Android frontend, It was quite an easy and fun job for me because I don't get to see people rant about the design that needed to be implemented so, usually I design something that can be easily implemented.
We got 2 projects with a tight deadline and I took care of both project's design part and after completing the design I took the entire frontend of one project and rest of em started working with the other one. Usually we were a strong team and was able to deliver things real quick because we were expert in our intrested fields, I had a fast start in my project where the other project lagged a lot because of the desifn which was hard to implement by them, and the frontend was bo where near to get completed by the deadline and I couldn't help them out because it was all messed up shit handling both projects together.
Finally we were in a situation where none of our project are ready and the deadline was about to hit within a week, so we halted the other project and asked them to join me to complete the project am Working on, I had built most of the Android part and these fellows had a hard time figuring out stuff I made up (yeah, documentation was shit while you go agile), and finally things messed up and I had to work 2 continuous day and night without any sleep just to get the app ready 10 minutes before the official proto presentation.
The best part is I couldn't even get up from my chair and had a headache, fainted instantly when I took a few steps, but the product launch went good.
We fucked uo the code and both the projects just because we weren't available for each other considering the size of the team. Anyway we completed the project but It was a huge failure for us being first time to manage a startup.
Learned a lot of lessons,
Always make a team with people who are good at each of the aspect of development and never divide it to get shit done faster.
Got locked out of my DigitalOcean account, absolutly hate OVH vps's, and currently relying on free credit with Google Cloud Services.
Anyone have better ideas? 😂25
another windows 10 FORCE UPDATE just messed up my whole system. My mouse is not working properly, every app is become unresponsive within a few minutes, every window is needing life time to load, every folder is needing lifetime to navigate, Android Studio is taking hours to fire up. Why Microsoft!! WHY!!!???21
My worst code review involves line endings. In one of our products we use the facade pattern, and one of the facades is about 5000 loc.
Well, a dude in our team messed up with line endings, so our diff tool showed that 5000 lines have changed. A newb I was at that time, I didn't know any other diff tool, so I went through all the lines manually only to see that 2 lines effectively have changed.. and the newb I was, didn't thought about rejecting the change immediately! We then had somehow to revert that commit, but messed up our central repo (was still with CVS). In the end we had to restore the daily backup for the repo because we couldn't manage it to do it right.
Never ever had such a disastrous code review again.
Am I the only developer in existence who's ever dealt with Git on Windows? What a colossal train wreck.
1. Authentication. Since there is no ssh key/git url support on Windows, you have to retype your git credentials Every Stinking Time you push. I thought Git Credential Manager was supposed to save your credentials? And this was impossible over SSH (see below). The previous developer had used an http git URL with his username and password baked in for authentication. I thought that was a horrific idea so I eventually figured out how to use a Bitbucket App password.
2. Permissions errors
In order to commit and push updates, I have to run Git for Windows as Administrator.
3. No SSH for easy git access
Here's where I confess that this is a Windows Server machine running as some form of production. Please don't slaughter me! I am not the server admin.
So, I convinced the server guy to find and install some sort of ssh service for Windows just for the off times we have to make a hot fix in production. (Don't ask, but more common than it should be.)
Sadly, this ssh access is totally useless as the git colors are all messed up, the line wrap length and window size are just weird (seems about 60 characters wide by 25 lines tall) and worse of all I can't commit/push in git via ssh because Permissions. Extremely aggravating.
4. Git on Windows hangs open and locks the index file
Finally, we manage to have Git for Windows hang quite frequently and lock the git index file, meaning that we can't do anything in git (commit, push, pull) without manually quitting these processes from task manager, then browsing to the directory and deleting the .git/index.lock file.
Putting this all together, here's the process for a pull on this production server:
Launch a VNC session to the server. Close multiple popups from different services. Ask Windows to please not "restart to install updates". Launch git for Windows. Run a git pull. If the commits to be pulled involve deleting files, the pull will fail with a permissions error. Realize you forgot to launch as Administrator. Depending on how many files were deleted in the last update, you may need to quit the application and force close the process rather than answer "n" for every "would you like to try again?" file. Relaunch Git as Administrator. Run Git pull. Finally everything works.
At this point, I'd be grateful for any tips, appreciate any sympathy, and understand any hatred. Windows Server is bad. Git on Windows is bad.11
The three of us were all doing Java project for class. Within 5 minutes, we all merged our branches up to the integration branch, and everything broke.
Longest 2 hours of yelling ever. We took out all of the stops: git blames, reverting commits, the whole nine.
Turns out that someone accidentally pushed their .idea folder, which messed up everyone's system.2
In a recent venture, I had to use an office suite and a photo editing software regularly. As a Linux user, I tried using Libreoffice and gimp. But that was just a mess. My other project partners were using MS office. Format, image alignments, fonts.. everything was messed up. Same happened wih the gimp. I know Photoshop, learnt while studying. Gimp was just no match to that. I was forced to go back to Windows. And I was surprised that the latest MS office and Adobe Creative Cloud were excellent. MS office was smoother and faster than Libreoffice.
I love linux. I have tried all the major distros and I love all of them. But I would still say that Linux is not the best option for day to day non-dev tasks. Whatever Richard Stallman and the Open Source Community say, Linux lack good softwares, at least some good document, photo, audio and video editing softwares.8
In my free time I like to compile android ROMs for my device, and I couldn't get my favourite ROM, CarbonROM to compile, it was wining about a c file in a directory and I used a different repo, no sound after compiling but hey, at least it worked right?
Turns out there was a new commit that had messed up the compiler, and this commit was live for about 10 minutes, and I just so happened to be repo syncing at that time.
WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK.
Wasted 2 days working on an obj (3d model) exporter….messed up meshes … missing faces … despair build after build …
And then the realization: Vertices in obj are 1-indexed.
nobody learned anything from the array start at 1 meme2
Today's been majorly tough 😣, I might lose one of my fav an most high paying clients 😐
He's OK in taking risks in his business because he has money to fall back on 😐 I have none we are sorta partners in projects. So we have this one project he never wrote in this project brief/outline maintenance or sign off ,😐 it never occured to him .
So now this app is ongoing I got paid nothing they just released it I need to do these jobs to make money 😐 but I'm stuck helping him 😐
There have been so many issues it's been ongoing forever 😐 I dunno what I can do .
To make it worse the code is a pile of shit 😐 literally couldnt be worse.
Why ? Because there has been 4000 minor adjustments. I'm a good coder I swear , but this job is killing me 🙁
Here's an example start of the new year the new iOS kicked in on the 12 Dec I started get more n more bug reports! Saying iOS is messed up.
Because of an update it's not my fault. 😣, 6 months this project took 😐 every 2 weeks I've had a major issue come up like that.
😖 I'm near my wit's end I feel like the best move is to just say I'm sorry I can't anymore I understand that this app is important and that we need to get paid less to grow it etc but I can't let my business die because of that.
Times like this I really appreciate this app
I guess I have to stick it out 😧1
It promised full-blown CRDT functionality. So I decided to adopt it.
Disappointment number one: you have to use CouchDB, so your data model is under strict regulations now. Okay.
Disappointment number two: absolutely messed up hack required to restrict users from accessing other users’ data, otherwise you have to store all the user data in single collection. Not the most performant solution.
Disappointment number three: pagination is utter mess. Server-side timestamps are utter mess. ANY server-side logic is utter mess.
Just to set it to work, you need PouchDB itself, websocket adapter (otherwise only three simultaneous syncs), auth adapter (doesn’t work via sockets), which came out fucking large pile of bullshit at the frontend.
Disappointment number four, the final one: auth somehow works but it doesn’t set cookie. I don’t know how to get access.
GitHub user named Wohali, number one CouchDB specialist over there, doesn’t know that either.
It also doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox at all.
So, if you want to use PouchDB, bear that in mind:
1. CouchDB only
2. No server-side logic
3. Authorization is a mess
4. Error logs are mess too: “ERROR 83929629 broken pipe” means “out of disk space” in Erlang, the CouchDB language.
5. No hosting solutions. No backup solutions, no infrastructure around that at all. You are tied to bare metal VPS and Ansible.
6. Huge pile of bullshit at frontend. Doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox.8
"What the fuck did you do to my phone?" has got to be the most irritating line from a user ever. I didn't touch your phone, so just because I know IT that means I messed up your phone? That's stupid.1
`xdg-open` on Linux is fucked up. The thing never works properly for me.
In the attached screenshot below, you can see that `feh` is the default application for opening jpg files, however, it always opens the file in the browser. It doesn't work for any other filetypes as well. It's just messed up.
By the way, I tried to do some debugging on the line number xdg-open reports. It calls this bash line: `"$command_exec" "$@"`, however, when I echo the command, it prints nothing. So this means it can't find the program to open the file with and, at the same time, it reports that the program is set as you can see in the screenshot!!3
When I was young I'd play games and around age 11 received an Xbox for my bday. Hated the case, so I painted the case. Since I had it open looked into getting a replacement fan.Thats when everything changed. I discovered the modding scene and without having any computer background/literacy got to studying.
The program that caught my eye ran on Linux. *shrugs thinking how hard can it be? * Read about Linux and discover dual booting. To do that I needed to resize windows partition. Learn more about partitions and get to it. Finally prepped... Backup in case of the worst, resized windows partition, working Ubuntu bootable USB, and printed install tutorial. Check, check, and check. Install was good. Sort of.
While Ubuntu worked, the broadcam wireless chipset driver did not. Fast forward a week and I feel that i had mastered the terminal basics. And WiFi worked! Go download the aforementioned program and FTP into the Xbox and BOOM... It doesn't work. More days and hours spent researching. In the end it all chalked up to not setting a static IP address on Xbox.
After all was said and done I had a bitchin Xbox. I think the only thing I didn't put on it was some gold spinning rims.
Sad part about that Xbox is that I never used it after. Instead I just kept messing around with Linux and learning more about computers. Taught myself HTML/CSS. Learned more about shell scripting. Then Windows cmd basics. Tried programming languages but felt a little overwhelmed. Only messed with <10 lines of code to tweak existing programs.
Now I'm learning C# and loving it. Planning on C++ or Java next!
Going through a startup code
// TODO: implement!
// FIXME: this is so messed up
// HACK: works for now, find a better way
// HACK: hardcoded for now
// FIXME: this doesn't work, crash here
// TODO: this probably should be a separate class
// TODO: change messed up variable names
// FIXME: WTF is this, Dave?!
// TODO: remove this before release2
Today I flew from London to Glasgow and had to carry my laptop in my suitcase since I don't have a proper laptop bag. Was extremely nervous the whole time even though I cushioned it as much as possible. Then I get home and on CSS tricks I see this on the screen and freak out thinking my screen got messed up. Turns out it's my adblocker doing work :D6
Finally got to catch up on last week's episode of Mr. Robot...I must say, Elliott got my mind messed up with all those illusions. O.o2
Why would anyone use CPU ticks for connection timeouts? Everytime that software is used in a new CPU it gets messed up. Why not just milliseconds?
Last year I wrote a sudoku program which did solve easy sudokus but messed up on harder ones. I had got bored after a bit and forgot about it until today I thought I'd rewrite it using new stuff I've learned since and make it work properly.
So I opened it up and look and I'm like 'WHAT!?' because I don't understand what I wrote. After a bit I start to get the idea and see that it was kind of smart even if long and complicated.
If anything, it shows how much my documentation skills have improved.
Now I just have to work out how to redo it in a way I understand.7
Once I really messed up with git. Lots of conflicts, strange branching, HEAD in detached state etc. Just cloned an earlier version of the repo into a separate folder, hand transferred all the changes I needed to keep and force merged into master as if nothing ever happened.1
Lesson learned: never fuck up with the python version that comes with a distro. I spent the whole day re-installing Linux Mint on a new partition and transferring home folder to the new partition. 😣😣😣
I'm an idiot 😥5
I find it funny that the client requested a specific design, then a year later the client says: Design is messed up!4
I'm getting a Chromebook, and, obviously, I'd rather wget all my webpages before I use chrome as my main os. so any recommendations for distros? I want a good, smooth ui, kinda like what windows was aiming for but so terribly messed up. I want apt package manager, and I wouldn't mind pentesting tools, and it has to be light enough to use on a computer with 4gb ram and 16gb ssd. I assume it's implied with linux, but I want one that's generally consider to be secure. I plan to run android studio (I expect it to be slower than a commodore 64 running windows 10), eclipse, gcc, if that helps. any suggestions? thanks!17
Awhile ago I was working with an National Instruments RFID analyzer scope.. the item cost $100,000. And the vendor that sold it my company had the boldness to have Windows 7 run all the licensed software equipment on the device.
The product however did work quite well. One day I came into the office and IT "UPGRADED" TO Windows 10 OVERNIGHT.
Effectively turning the equipment into the world's most expensive brick. Luckily for me, it was my last day in that position.. got a salaried position in engineering.
A couple months later an intern was assigned to fix it.. the licenses were messed up.. he eventually got it working again. Microsoft almost cost my company $100K without a second glance.
It all worked out in the end. :)3
Compass readings on Android phone might get messed up when iPhone gets close to it.
I have azimuth showing in my app, we wanted to check if it's working and we put an Android phone on the table and iPhone with compass app running. Android showed 20 degrees less. Colleague picked up iPhone and azimuth on Android changed by 20 degrees :D2
So I'm pretty accustomed to German "professional" websites. As a tourist, I was just looking up tourist stuff online and I stumbled across this gem
I was like, yeah, okay, maybe this is just a really unfortunate mistake, although I was clearly having in mind the "easy" navigation DB offers both on their app and their website
So continuing my tourist search, I found several sightseeing objectives on decent websites, took the info from there, planned my trip and when I reached the place I was told completely different info that didn't exist on their website, which mostly messed up my visit to those touristic sites
Maybe I should just go search for answers on some forums and print out people's advice9
Building a Project Manager with Electron.
Does anyone of you has experience with lowbd? If yes, feel free to share!
Image is my messed up first try :P2
Was trying to dual boot Linux on a friend's laptop..
Messed up the partition system and now Windows crashes and no Grub on boot 😅😐
Gonna have to try to fix it tomorrow..
I've always had problems dual booting Manjaro for some reason4
I FUCKING GIVE UP!
Yep I'm pissed of :D I spend the last two months waiting like a idiot some business to answer about their job offers (more or less 3 in my area..)
Well I failed the last test of the first one, it was expected I guess. Lot of things happened but let's say I didn't use the approach that they were hoping me to use (you could have tell me you know...).
So... There is even one of the job offer, I called them already twice. Asking when they will call back. Each time it was : this week or the week after. Yeah I think that makes 5/6 weeks since the first time I called now...
But the thing which really piss me of. Is that I was waiting like a idiot, doing mostly nothing. Like if I couldn't focus on my projects before that I get a job... Well I guess when everyone is asking about when you will have a job or a girlfriend, that's not the atmosphere that I love to work with T. T
Oh yeah, no dev related. But I fall in love with a Russian girl (I'm a French guy btw). I completely messed up the relationship though xD well no way that I'm giving up anyway. And that's mostly thanks to her that I just woke up of that shitty period ^^
Sooo I started to gather people from all over the world on LinkedIn. Checking job offers on StackOverflow. And Monday I'll start writing some post on LinkedIn searching for a job in the whole fucking world. I hope there will have a business who wants a junior C++ dev :P Remote probably, I'd like to travel easily (yeah, I probably want to go to Russia a little too xP)
That's all :D I FUCKING GIVE UP ABOUT WAITING DOING NOTHING LIKE A IDIOT!!!9
Working for 5 months as a junior dev. I receive a request to check out a data issue at client, no one knows what is happening. I quickly find a data import issue and let everybody know. Few days later apparently issue is still not solved. A senior data consultant approaches me asking for help.
senior: 'So, any idea what's wrong with the data?'
me: 'Yeah, someone messed up the import. Just delete it and import it again.'
senior: 'How do you know?'
me: 'Because <insert valid arguments>'
senior: Wow, very clever. Amazing work. I wouldn't have thought about that. Great job'
A few moments later I receive an email from the senior with all the stakeholders in the cc: 'I found the problem and I have a solution <copy/paste my words>'4
When an interviewer asks, what are the steps that you take usually when given a task to do something, what do you guys say?
I said, I devote 10-20% of the time to understand the given problem - sit and explore all possible scenarios to handle, then develop a brute Force approach, improve the approach to make it more efficient, see if it handles all edge and corner cases, then write test cases for it.
( I'm thinking, the process doesn't vary a lot for most of the people?, Except in TDD - one'll write the test cases first)
How would you answer this question?
I have this feeling that I messed up something 🤔9
I build my friend's pc
He didn't had windows
The site where we bought the oem license was messed up
and yes... I had to use teamviewer to disable his adblocker...
Oh, and 12 hours later to activate windows...
And yes, it was me spending 10 minutes on the phone to acivate his windows key since we got a already used license...
Adding it up, including the whatsapp remote support, If I would st art charing I would get rich...1
3days later i have an interview in a company, i messed up first one😂😎
but i study more again i hate making mistakes.
Not a DRV rant bit I am Maaad AF here
I am doing an internship at an amazing company. Everything is going well and I have learned a lot. This internship is for 6 months and almost 4 months are remaining. Now this shitfuckery of obscene ignorance that I call my college , wants every student to attend classes no matter what. I have already told them the status of my internship but they said "college is more important ". Along with this they want 2 projects in this semester and my HOD said we have to give developments of our project weekly
When I told this amazing piece of human knowledge that I won't get off for every week and I will be using git , he can see my developments and we can communicate on slack etc.
This humble genius said with utmost compassion " what is got, I don't use it , come daily to college". Man, first time in my life I have ever given that Michael Corleone stare at sollozzo killing death stare.
Indian colleges are messed up.1
Was a dba for a while. Mostly because I was the only one who knew SQL. Was working with an experienced dev doing front end work with no experience with front end work.
One day he calls over the cube wall "hey the database is broken" so I trudge over there, and see he messed up the call to the BAL from his code behind page. Later, he calls over the cube wall again. Same thing. 3 to 4 times a day. For a week. Finally my default became "no it isn't" and I continued working.
Then when it finally was a database problem, he had this smug look of satisfaction. Yes I'm the idiot.
And here I was thinking I would finally give in and buy a Macbook Pro... Anyone got recommendations? Apple messed up for us developers...12
The beginning of my small app. Just a small question to the devRant community. As I am relatively new in Android app development I was wondering which layout is okay to work with?
The reason behind this question is that I have found that sometimes I'd move a component(e.g., button, text field) by a small fraction and boom! everything else is messed up.11
My 2tb portable external hard disk is messed up :( . The disk isn't spinning. It is under warranty but I am so depressed.4
This is another high school story. mostly because i’m in high school.
like most schools we have horrible forced passwords. Our school recently purchased microsoft 365. which means we all use outlook for our emails. the logins for our district follow the sand format.
s + first five of last name (x’s for missing letters) + first letter of your first name + the last three of your student id.
so for example Sean Peterson 456705 would be speters705. since we have outlook we can look up a persons name and get their email which gives you the last three of their password. All passwords start with a 4 and most are followed by a five so you pretty much can get 5 out of the 6 numbers in their password.
so to mess with my friends i signed into all of their accounts and messed with their emails so they thought they were getting random emails. and then i made word documents on all of their accounts and just pretty much messed with all of their school stuff.
so that’s my “hacking” story. my district doesn’t allow you to change your password so i’m pretty much stuck. pls help.4
My server is taking 7 minutes to boot with an ssd 🤔...
Time to systemctl blame the shit out of the system and figure out what config I messed up!9
So, apparently that another kickstarted IoT chip dev team forgot to bind reset button to anything, so it is just sitting there as a fidget toy and they also messed up with usb-to-serial connection so it is working only in transmission mode. I am just sitting here with bricked chip with no adequate possibilities to unbrick it.1
Just turned down an offer to become eCommerce Lead @IKEA Austria.
They got those messed up systems controlled by the headquarters in sweden and no clue of or sense for online or digitalisation...how I'm supposed to fix their organization culture... I'd only had freaked everybody out trying to disrupt their 'used' way of doing business :(
Wondering if that's gonna haunt me...3
Wtf is happening to tech security... Last 4 months
All WiFi is now crackable. .. in short amount of time
Windows . . Annihilated with this new bug might not be fixable... and work back on all of them
iPhones cracked ...
Linux dirty cow ...
Android been suffering.
And everyone knows Mac's security is joke ...
Finger prints ... Made pointless on everything.
Literally all going to shit .. 😐
And I know how to do all this... It's all out in the open not even hard to find8
2 AIX workloads got messed up during patching. Apparently they had a local database and they were in PROD env.
"Not a biggie - there's always a netbackup to restore the whole workload" - I said and reached out to netbackup folks.
Turns out even though netbackup was configured properly it had never even initiated successfully bcz backup NIC was not whitelisted in network layer. Never ever in 3 years.
Service guys were piiiiiiiiiiiiised big time1
I do not work developing, besides this is really a passion for me. Said that, today I was talking with my boss.
Boss: Your idea is great, I love this tool you made.
Me: Thank you, I just need to finish some details, this last dramatic change in our structure messed up with a lot of things.
Boss: Yes, I have some ideas to we code more.
Me: Great! I love development! We can do ...
Boss: No, we can use your time with other things as it is more expensive. I'm going to get a boy still in college to develop.3
This post may contain spoilers to Doom 2016
Doom 2016 is so underwhelming and left such an empty void inside me ugh
I played through the whole game in about 7 hours, got all secrets and everything, like a 100% completion.
The music is fantastic, it fits the gameplay, and in combination with the good sound design it's a great experience.
The graphics are good as well, there are some hiccups like the Hell Guards' force field which looked like a kid mapped a sphere with a 240p texture in like 2005.
The story was OK, it's not really present there, because it's a game about slaying demons.
They had a minimal story, but they still messed it up somehow.
The ending of the game is an absolute wreck. After three bossfights stacked back to back, each of which took me like 20 minutes first try, which is less time than I spend on some levels even, I faced the Spider Mastermind, where Olivia dies for some reason, very undramatically, she just plops on the ground. Then the Mastermind appears, whose attacks are childish, and health is lower than the Cyberdemon. I got done with him in about 20 minutes as well. He also dies very undramatically.
Then, the cherry on top. Hayden just leaves you. That's all. Nothing else is told to us. What happened to the Hellslayer next? Did he go back to hell? What will he do there if there is nobody there anymore? Why did Samuel decide on sending him back to hell and not in his tomb? Why did the Slayer even get a backup of VEGA if he's not planning on restoring it???
All of these questions are left unanswered and this is absolutely killing me rn
Such a game leaves the player at such an anticlimactic ending with so many cliffhangers. They better be working on the next Doom where this is elaborated.16
Software can be "bug free" only under a very narrow definition of the term, and very specific circumstances that has little to do with the capabilities of the developers.
After all, the outside world is horribly messed up.
HELP, ITS A MESS!!
Here is a thing : 30 hours ago, i was completely free nd useless .Had a lot of reminders to open source & learn new techs for upcoming summer vacations .
But day before yesterday my friend called me to say that he got a 6 month internship in web from some (not so big) startup and they were looking for some Android dev too, so he gave my name and wanted me to mail him my resume.
I did, and within half an hour he called, discussed about the work and wanted to test me.(as i said i didn't had plans for internship , leave alone a sudden test, but the company was work from home so i didn't denied ) The test was a big one but easy, he wanted me to design 15 UI activities for an app by looking at the wireframe. I asked for next 6 hours, did it in 4.5 and submitted him the repo...
THE TROUBLE STARTS NOW...
1) He seemed impressed i guess, coz the next day when he saw my message, he Created a group of 5 people within a few minutes and started assigning tasks(?!) And in the personal chat what he said was just weird : "You are the lead for this project" (WTF??!?)
2)I had already mentioned him that i currently had exams so won't be doing any much of practical work but after every few grp messages, he was trying to assign me some task and a deadline. Weirdly, the test was actually a wireframe based on the project idea from some of their client , and just to show my skills, i have designed layouts of 15 of their activities of their app.
3) The negetive part comes like this: THERE IS NO MONEY AND ITS A 6 MONTH INTERNSHIP !! Fed up of this continues indirect deadlines, i asked him What's my responsibilities as a team dev, what will be my tenure and what will be the pay to which he replies that:
"there is no stipend for this, we have multiple projects lined up in which you can contribute and your internship period is 6 months which could be increased/decreased on the basis of your performance. You will get a PPO, Internship certificate , mentor support and intellectual code rights (which i am guessing means my 2 word name in the about pages of the apps i develop for them ) .And as a lead , you will be getting an experience in leadership skills "
I am really confused. Work from home seems like a relaxing thing , and being a team lead for the first time definitely would make me a little more confident. But why does it feel to be kind of fraud plan? Plus there is no pay and i would be ignoring my creativity ideas for this (not completely but i am sure anyone giving a job would expect some work from me eceryday ).
WHAT SHOULD I DO???6
Worked from 8am to 23pm today. A massive power outage yesterday messed up my schedule. Still have a lot to do tomorrow. Going to sleep now. Stay strong, everyone. Weekend is coming.
How fucked up are you,
when your vp of engineering doesn't even know how to show phpinfo webpage to test server setup.
change ode directly in production server,
then messed up and using excuse :
" I don't know because i am a frontend developer "
Then why you become a VP of Engineer !3
To all the masochists who spent hours debugging misspellings:
1. Learn your tools
2. Learn good practice
Every IDE should point out when you're not using a variable you've initiated or using an uninitiated variable as well as at least highlight, if not simply list, every occurrence of the variable under your cursor and let you find all references or even display the number of references next to a variable at all times, and finally, every IDE should autocomplete for you so when it doesn't you know you've messed up. Good IDE makes all the easy mistakes hard and all of the hard tasks easy. Including running tests. If you don't know how to configure your IDE to do all these things take time and learn it. If you still can't figure it out, replace your IDE maybe...?
Also use the debugger. Preferably one that nicely integrates with your IDE. If you don't, check point 1.
Also write tests and *run them*.
Also if your misspellings tend to consist of a missing `s` at the end of a plural noun just call it `entityCollection` instead of `entities`. And read up on more good programming practices and naming conventions.6
I don't use an antivirus and I probably never will.
I'll share two experiences from two different people to provide you people some base.
Firstly, this friend of mine wants to learn Android. He doesn't even have chrome installed. So I'm like let's get you a decent browser. I open the website to Firefox and I'm ready to install it.
He stops me.
He says don't install anything this isn't my laptop it's my father's and it'll get a virus.
I assure you it won't get a virus. You already have a fucking premium anti whatever the fuck suite installed so why are you worried?
Viruses are intelligent they can get anywhere. The argument was proving a waste of time besides I realized I had the files on my computer and just needed to transfer them via a thumb drive or something.
I bring over my thumb drive. Mr.viral fuck here is so shocked I thought his balls fell off. No! He doesn't want a thumb drive either, apparently they carry and generate viruses.
At this point I gave up to retain my health in the long run.
You know what I ain't going to share the other experience cause it's even more messed up.
Seriously what's with the paranoia ? I never have used an antivirus ever on my Windows installation and have never gotten infected by one either. How the fuck do people get infected by them ? I'm seriously missing something here.20
Not a specific bug, but I always have that satisfactory feeling when I fix a bug inside a code like this:
1. Spaghetti af
2. Duplicated af
3. Heavy use of static fields instead of passing via callback when required
4. variable names like: textbox1 ..etc.
5. No comments
It is true that is a huge pain in the ass to deal with, but then I look at it as I was able to create something out of that mess, I mean all is mixed up nothing is clear, no clue where it starts and what caused it, but then I put the pieces together and end up with a solution of what I thought to be: It will never be solved when that mess is here.
Not an excuse for messed up code, I try fixing whenever possible, but hey, at least I did not run away and give up
Fucking fuck! How could I be so naive?
I just started my masters in Enterprise Software Development. It's basically the continuation of the CS BSc I finished this year. I don't consider myself a lazy and bad dev and I finished in the top 5-10% of the class - I say this not because I want to brag, I know I'm not the best, I know I have my defects, BUT I don't think that it's a good sign that all of us, my top graduate friends all full of hate and anger against this whole MSc after just a week. And... It's mostly one fucking egoistic teacher's fault.
Okay, all of us are working full time which is obviously tiring if you combine it with the university classes. But I still think I could manage this first week better, if I wouldn't fucking came to the same line of the faculty.
I deeply fucking hate that I've been naively thinking that the masters will be different after experiencing one of the worst teachers last year. It's fucking first week, and I can't change the specialization anymore, only give up. I wanted to fill up the void with some usefulness, but I just fucking messed it up.
This "beloved" teacher is from the industry, he has a lot of experience and started to teach recently. Which is not a problem, no! It should be a great thing by default. But the way he holds his courses is inaccaptable. I don't think I have the right to share everything, but the following stuff just grinds my gears... Like a fucking lot:
1) He brags about a lot of stuff. Like he made really good deals in the past. Why should we know, that he made a contract with a client for 20 million euros. Okay. Whatever. That doesn't help us, and I think that bragging makes him look like an egoistic scum.
2) I hate this one the most: he fucking says that we have a choice in the administrative stuff. He gives us some hope and offers the possibility to argument and come up with our own solutions for grading and etc. But oh boy, is this a false hope, a fake idea of free will. He already knows what the final solution will be and on what kind of decisions will we all "agree". He did this last year, he does it again. Fucking naiveness of mine...
3) Lastly, he decided, that we have to go to theatre with him, all of us. No exception. And I like the theatre. But only when it isn't forced. Why and how could you pair this up with the grade you give to your students? Because that's what he does.
FML. How can I already hate this? How can I already be fed up with all the stuff? Anyways, I'm signing the contract with the university tomorrow, so let the fun games begin... I know, I look like a whining little boy now, but I just fucking had to went it after this deep fried shit-day. I probably have to get some sleep, and everything's gonna be fine. Eventually, skipping classes might become necessary in order to bear all this shit.6
I had fixed an issue that took me 2 hours to figure out, then committed the fix. Only to realise that I committed from an external folder (svn)
I messed up somewhere and my fix was gone.
Fuck me. Fuck externals, can't wait till we switch to git.
My brother is really into church (he wants to be a priest, but that's not important here) and he is one of the "admins" on our local church's site.
Today he asked me if I know Joomla. I do. I made my school's website in Joomla. He had a problem with a contact form plugin (tl;dr: simple form that sends an e-mail to one of the administrators). The main Admin messed up when creating form for my brother and the plugin deleted it. Admin said nothing can be done about it.
My brother has the access to the admin panel. He asked if I could do something about that. I said OK. He then logged me in.
The admin panel looked weird, but I thought it was just a theme. Until I looked at the footer. "Joomla version 1.1.0". I asked him if they know their site is outdated. I told him they don't even use the latest 1.x version and there is already v3.5. He said the main Admin is aware, but updating breaks one of the plugins. Which plugin? The fucking form plugin that keeps deleting forms.
You know how I fixed my brother's form? By making a new one and populating it with the same details (same fields, same email etc.) and just replaced his old one.
Should I offer to make them a new site on Joomla 3? If they asked I would do it, but I'm not sure their admin would know how to replace it.
So today I was having this discussion with my colleague regarding a messed up pull request.
Me: are you done merging the remaining branches into master?
Colleague: no, I'm still merging the changes manually.
Me: but why?
Colleague: because the changes will overwrite the changes in master.
Me: but how? It will just conflict and you can keep whichever changes YOU WANT. You can even edit before committing the merge.
Colleague: I'm just redoing the changes manually anyway.
I'm using git bash on Windows 10, tried WSL, but it is really messed up needs more documentation, i had multiple installs of node js and other stuff including node_modules
So using git bash, I have my own sweet .bashrc file which is awesome, using bash or WSL is kinda slow, just wanna know how you devs have set up your terminals.4
A.I. steals my job?
I guess the I.T. guy fixing things up is a good option.
In the mean time the A.I. will learn about devRant and start ranting about things we messed up. He will then lose faith and resign from continuing.
Gets the job back.
Sitting in a bar with a senior colleague (Me - Student part timer, Him - 15+ Years of experience).
We started talking about our projects and he mentioned that after this, he'd get to spend his evening fixing a git merge, which went wrong because one of his teammates used cherry pick and thus messed up the history a bit (oversimplified).
So he tells me he'd be spending hours to get an overview of his colleagues codes (multiple devs and only team leader knows who does what exactly).
So I suggested he revert these cherry picked commits and so could maybe solve the problem in less time.
He thought about it... Told me HE didn't think of that and thanked me for my help.
Long story short: Today was a good day :31
Yesterday whole 12 hours we were working on deployment about a feature X that has deadline yesterday itself.
Everything damn perfectly running on Test env but not on Prod.
We made Prod into Dev/Test/Fucking garabage env. Haha.
I was laughing to myself at same time crying hard in my deep heart.
Business guys chasing PM
PM chasing us
And from morning till night we were in same room. Had lunch, and dinner only went out for toilet and to refil water bottles.
And found that feature Y is not working at same time that is related to our feature X. Fucking we have been wasted hours on it.
One of my devs got so fucked up emotionally that he messed up the code (not his fault) he didnt had his lunch and dinner. Had to console him later that its not his fault. Poor guy not sure whether he slept or not; will find out in few hours.
Anyways reported a bug.
But that bug assigned to us for fixing.
Are you fucking kidding me.
Anyways no choice. Had to do it.
Hope today everything goes good or horribly bad. FYI no deployments on Friday damn we are in stalememt till Monday.
Fuck that bug
May be fuck our stupiditiy while makiing mistakes.1
Follow up to my previous rant ( https://devrant.com/rants/1680373/... )
I've contacted digital ocean support and asked them about that blocked port. They said that they didn't block it and that I must've messed up with configuration. The thing is, when I set postfix to port 2525 it works perfectly fine and I can connect no problem. Will see how they respond to that...4
1. Being fast doesn't meant your smart.
2. Think thrice before you apply your idea, saves not only time but your keystrokes.
3. Google is just the last resort, if you can crack it yourself there is nothing better.
4. Cleanliness is Godliness, not that believe in God but if I see you writing shit and messed up code then you gotta do it again.
5. Useless code is important, it will help you get lost later when you come back.
And most importantly, LISTEN.4
The most excited was probably when I had to write a Visual Basic program with a try/catch statement that took user input and would send a “You Done Messed Up!” Popup Error message in the catch. For some reason it was sending it anyways even after the input was correct. Took me an hour of debugging to find out it was my logic that was wrong. Finished the assignment 5 minutes before it was due. I celebrated as if I had just won the World Cup.
I think I'm at the final stage of grief where I want to destroy the entire human population . Economy , money and other factors like alcohol ... we as humans don't deserve to live . Controlling population growth with addiction is just messed up .
Even though the alcohol killed my dad , he was a really good person who was under such amounts of pressure that no-one deserves . Actually strike that everyone deserves much more . A tenant who occupied our property just as we needed to sell it for cash problems . His father stole his inheritance left behind by his mother . And relatives who didn't give a shot about him until he makes a trip to the hospital . An economy that's responsible for all this .
I want to rewrite this disgraceful race .9
Not a data loss exactly but a loss indeed.
It was my first week at my first junior developer job, I was just learning git and completely messed it all up. I lost around 3 hours of work.
I didn't want to ask anybody for help (because of that useless junior feeling, you know...) and wasn't as good using Google as I'm now.
So I re-did all the work. Thankfully, I have a decent memory.
If there's something to learn here is ask for help when you've used all your resources and still think you need it. Nobody is going to have a bad opinion about you ;)
Most the devs are yelling Linux is best and blah. But since I installed eOS on my new ideapad my productivity is zero.
I'm just solving problems with the OS or other software. It seems some of the drivers are missing, because sometimes this fucking piece of shit just don't boots or just hangs. Installing node and npm was definitely one of the worst experiences because I messed up sudo privileges... I had to change my workflow because node-sass wasn't able to compile because of this.
And still I kind of feel more comfortable with eOS. 😥16
Got extremely stuck and I have absolutely no clue about what I am really doing. I think I've messed up the whole codebase with these new changes.5
My worst mistake was to not follow the commit process one time. I was multitasking a lot and forgot to run the tests for one of the commits I made. Next thing I know the whole Dev team started complaining that the Head of the branch was all messed up and blaming me. Long story short, it wasn't my change but I had to take the bullet and revert it for not following the process. It was deserved. Process is just as important as writing the code.
My team was asked to point to a mock service in our QA env. Standard procedure is to copy the line in our QA property file that has the service URL, comment one out, and change the other to the mock service. Then, push the code and deploy to QA.
What did someone do? He didn't touch the property file. He found where we were defining the configuration for our http requester, removed the property reference, and HARD CODED the mock URL.
Wait, it gets better. The mock service does not function the same way the real service does. We need to send an additional query param to the mock service (that has a value already being sent in a header) so they modified ANOTHER file where the actual request is being made.
He made the changes, deployed to QA, and didn't check in any code.
What is going to happen next time when we deploy to QA with the latest code? Oh look, we'll be pointing to the real service again.
I explained this to my architect, and included that this messed up mock service they were calling is our 2nd mock service (no idea why they made a new one) and he simply deleted the stupid 2nd mock service. Screw that!
And...now requests to QA don't work 😂
Just had a 4 hour session with an external company to get connections up ... messed around 99% of the time with STX and ETX stuff only. I'm done until monday.
worked the whole weekend on a presentation my boss held today. he totally messed up and gave false interpretation to every single number. karma's a bitch😁
When you spend ages making a really nice for loop for handling multiple classes similar functionality, only to have it all messed up by one overloaded method1
So a bit ago I posted a rant saying that I would be getting ElementaryOS onto my computer and trying it out, buckle up kiddos because this goes to shit in just a moment.
I did everything right, used Rufus correctly and didn't destroy my computer nor my installer, good! I set it up, get everything going and everything is running smoothly. One problem... I couldn't download **any** programs that weren't from the Ubuntu Store, which really annoyed me because I like to use Brackets, and I couldn't find it in the UStore...
So I messed up **really** bad here... I didn't *format* my Elementary Installer, but tried to delete the files like a pleb and stick an Ubuntu ISO in it's place, I didn't even think on going through Rufus again, I just slapped that shit in there without a thought.
I restart my computer, I read a forum stating that I would get an option that allows Ubuntu (or another Linux distro) to take over the partition of a previous distro. Neat! Another bloody problem is that I decided to use "Win + R" and manually delete the Elementary partition **myself**... What is even wrong with me...
So I restarted it, and before my father left to go shopping, he said I should go into the BIOS to change the boot order (Now this is where I **really fucked up**. Thought what I said before was bad?).
Cool, so I boot my PC and go into the BIOS, now I couldn't figure out on my computer where the boot order was, when it was right in my face the whole damn time... I managed to almost destroy my entire BIOS with the fucking file in my USB stick, because I was being an idiot...
I restart, GRUB opens up with a black screen and white text in the top left corner, know what the most important line is in that small block of words? "unknown filesystem"... Of fucking course I fucked it that bad, GRUB didn't even give me the option of just using Windows 10 instead, just quietly gave me the middle finger since I basically nearly fucked everything.
What's funny is that I had someone (who lives with us, let's call him Jeff) look at my computer because I was done being a dumbass.
He told me that I still had my BIOS (which was a bloody relief, because I thought I basically destroyed my computer doing what I did) and that all I need to do is fix the installer I tried to use.
I gave him the USB and just started to play on my phone.
Then I remembered something maybe an hour or so ago... I had an older installer that I used on my shitty laptop awhile back, if I can find it again I could just use that instead of waiting on Jeff. I dug around my room and found the USB that had a working Ubuntu ISO on, correctly placed inside this time.
I basically walked up to my computer, plugged it in and started it up, and it worked. I got Ubuntu and Windows 10 back, and I was basically laughing like I just saved a man's life.
Moral of this story: Don't be like me and do something stupid, especially if you don't know what the fuck you're attempting at...
I am messed up at installing a bunch of server app in proxmox, messed up the config, privileges etc.
Guess i need to start over -_-1
I've very recently started coding in C# for a game I'm making and I can say the most common mistake I make is missing one of these little shits ";". I always look at my code like "This looks good to me" then after hours of looking through Visual Studio always comes through to tell me how bad I've messed up.2
Do you ever think that growing up has taken away a lot of your confidence and ability to react?
I, for one think that my 5 years before self was a lot more confident and quick towards action than now. I never used to think of consequences, people's laughs, judgments or criticisms, and would do whatever I want to do or say whatever I felt.
And now I can't even give a presentation before thinking of those laughing/ judging faces that would come up if i messed up.
It was all a gradual slowing down of excitements i think. in smaller classes, we were all wild and energized, playing football and cricket all day, sweating like a mule. then came middle school where we grew a little self-conscious about our hairstyle , clothes, etc. then consciousness started taking a huge hit when puberty and fatness took over...
And since then self consciousness has taken all over the kingdom while confidence is captivated in some prison somewhere, deteriorating day by day2
Honestly... I was checking the notebooks they use at work, because they were having problems with performance, and not only were they using win8, they were running without a license key, even though the notebook they use comes with win10. Someone messed up. I found a way to restore the original copy with the license, so all good i guess?6
I was supposed to relieve work last Friday and then as per request of HR on last moment, i had to postpone it to tomorrow.
Guess what, today evening boss comes and asks if really want to relieve tomorrow and then tells to change it to 31st. I tried to say no.
Then HR talked to me and his excuse was he got the dates messed up. He thought tomorrow was Friday. Fucking lie. I remember him saying it was a Wednesday when he told.
I'm seriously annoyed and tired of sitting there and being absolutely doing nothing productive other than fixing bugs assigned to team mates. I don't want to write any new code or participate in coding decision on the project, because i think that's just asking for more trouble. Team mates gotta learn to work on their own instead of relying me for every stupid little thing. I can't concentrate to work on my thing there, i just want to get out of that environment asap.
3 more boring days to pass, assuming i dont have to come on sat and sun.
Why the hell is html/css in email so messed up. Html looks nice on itself. But different things brake when you try to send it through different clients. Even between different versions of the same one (looking at you Outlook)7
!rant, but funny
tl;dr I made something that was to protect me in case the customer doesn't pay, wanted to check if it's still there, messed up a little :D
>do an Android app project for almost 6 months
>issues with payment for it
>"Add new application"
>add single integer variable
>back to app code
>if (integerFromFirebase != 0) navigateTo(new Fragment())
>but they ended up paying me in the end
>see another post on how to secure yourself if customer doesn't want to pay
>well, consider yours as more sophisticated
>hmm... wonder if they removed it
>app still works fine
>mhhh... they removed it? really?
>can't fking believe it
>search for the app
>decompile dex file
>find the fragment
>can't find the code that navigates to blank fragment, but the config fetch is still there
>look at the app
>SHIT ITS NOT WORKING NOW XDDDDD
>changed the variable back to 0
>found out that the lambda in which I navigate to the blank fragment is in other .java file. New thing learned :v
>idk if I'm in trouble but I highly doubt it (console shows max 10 active users atm)
Was fun tho :v3
Missed that it's already Friday and a customer's website will launch in the afternoon. Have to write an entire fucking form-doi-mail-plugin for WordPress within four hours. It's possible, yes. But I like doing things "right" and add comments. 😩
At least I moved the whole site already to the production Environment, new Hoster and stuff.2
Arg. I messed up bad today. Updated 17k records in database by mistake and had to rollback and apologize...
I won't rush on a task for rest of the day1
Some client coming back to me claiming some page "suddenly" changed style and fucked stuff up.
Yea, stuff like that totally happens. I'm like 90% sure someone messed with the styling...
Someone messed up big time at Blizzard. This is the second accident for the new Hearthstone expansion launch...1
I can see the appeal for Gradle over Maven. You can do a lot more with a lot less code + compilation times are much shorter. Makes maintaining and updating a program much easier over cleaning a repository if something gets messed up.
Back in may when I was picking up Java I remember in my intro course I was dumping individual .jar files and referencing dependencies manually. Why anyone would do that in the CURRENT YEAR is beyond me. 😣
I wish C++ had even half of the features that come standard on Java when I worked with it.5

Non-techy friend (n): you know what cherry pick is?
N: you dont know that?
Me: well, i love cherries...
N: i am disappointed of you.
Me: what the f...ing hell is that?
N: you know the git thingy you are always doing...
Me: i have never heard of that...
N: well use it every time before and after you commit.
Me : (not believing, but kinda believing) ok.
A few days later...
Messed up 3 hrs of work
What really is cherry pick guys?10
You know you are a fucked up frontend dev when deadline is fast approaching and API call gives messed up response.
Installing a TP-Link wifi adapter driver on Linux is messed up. First we have to compile the files ourselves, then the outdated documentation points to a stale github repo with minimal instructions and bugs in it. Cant believe that i spent 3 hrs trying to install a stupid wifi adapter driver.
TRYING, yes, TRYING.
Btw I'm referring to the archer TP-link T2U v11
@dfox I messed up an order on the shop: ordered with the company email for some reason and when I saw the confirmation email on my the email I deleted it lol. Obviously need some coffee. Can you send me an email so we can talk?6
language confusion is a mess. as a python newbie i am very focused on learning for the last two weeks. now i am not even able to declare my php-variables properly and end up getting errors the whole evening.1
So, uhm. I just messed up my entire bootloader. Oh boy, here we go again.
Almost had an existencial crisis for the last two and a half hours because I was trying to fix a bug on the connection of my app, only to discover that it wasn't working properly because I was writing correctly "registerUser.php" on the app, but I messed up in original file and saved as "resisterUser.php".
Always double check you spelling, kids.
What are the cons and pros of having one hdd, and two Operating systems .. windows 7 and linux .. i tried a while ago but i messed it up .. because i was at the beginning and didn't much about linux and grub :/6
That shitty moment when you are finally about to release your code, after about one month of developing and testing, and making sure everything is OK, imagining: "Oh we're finally releasing this feature, I have worked so hard on it, it's going to kick some ass!" but surprisingly things get fucked up on production server... I mean seriously? Stupid middleware I killed myself to get to work messed up. Where the hell have you been in staging, you stupid little bug? You happy now? My CTO giving me awkward looks and shit like: "I'm sorry but you have to come fix it, during weekend." The best way to fuck up my mood, today is the last day of week for god's sake!
I hate releasing like this. seriously SAG in this release!1
Adobe Cloud got my computer messed up and it couldn't even be uninstalled! I got so p-o I went to the registry and nuked anything containing the word "adobe" in it. Pheeew, what a relief! Like taking a real good dump! My computer both starts and runs faster now, and without popups requesting me to log in to Adobe Cloud.
That moment when you use a template to save time, only to spend days debugging code that someone else messed up. #devLife
Not dev related.
Two incidents that I'd like to share.
So here in India two major streams for college are engineering and medicine (others do exist). So entrances to both these colleges are based upon entrance exams. So here are two "events" that happened this year and worth mentioning.
The exam for the engineering stream had a section where the answer is a number with up to two digits of decimal. Range is (0.00 - 9.99) So apparently this two decimal precision created some confusion and the court decided that if the answer is precisely "seven" then only the candidates who've marked 7.00 are given marks while those who marked 7.0 or 7 were given wrong answer.
So for the medical entrance, exam was for 720 marks (180 questions * 4marks each). So every candidate from the state of Tamil Nadu were given a full 196 marks as bonus because the translations from English to Tamil we're inaccurate.
Now I need to mention that around 300 marks would fetch a decent seat in a government college.
What the fuck is happening? One the only thing they're supposed to conduct every year is also messed up. And who the fuck created complicated shit like 7.00 is correct while 7.0 and 7 are wrong. I mean should the candidate worry about the getting the answer or marking it?
For those who don't know wrong answers are penalized heavily and there's huge competition.
So I finally got a rant to tell, about me myself and I. Were working on my web host (personal gladly) and was trying to get ACME working without root access. I messed up and somehow got a folder named “~”, in a directory. I thought “well that folder is unnecessary” and I ran “rm -rf ~”. The moment I pressed “enter”, I realized what could’ve happened, and it did happen. My whole web-root gone. No backups. Just a big facepalm on my forehead ...
Take lesson, fix backups...4
Somewhat new to Linux and tried to install it on my usb so I don't affect my computer. Installed and an error saying could not install bootloader and booting from that usb just shows a blinking cursor and trying to boot back to Windows shows grub rescue as it doesn't recognise something. Might have to experiment with changing from legacy BIOS to UEFI. But I just hope nothing has happened to my windows4
tldr: Deleted Win10, turned out for better
**This happened a few months ago**
So one day I decide I have had enough of Windows 10 and wanted to go back to Linux (A long time ago I had dual booted Ubuntu, but messed it up changing video drivers). So I create a Mint installation USB and get to work. I boot up the installation and delete the old partitions from the Ubuntu install. I install Mint and boot it up, everything works fine and dandy! I decide I want to get back on Windows to get back a few files that I wanted copies over. I turn off the computer and *try* to boot up Windows. I get an error message that I am UNABLE to boot. WHAT! After further checking, I realize that I had deleted the MBR partition of Windows. Pretty sure I could remake it if I tried hard enough, but I am starting to realize that it feels good to be totally MS independent! Now I am using all open-source software available to Linux and have no need for Windows. I do miss some of the games though...
PS: No files were lost due to backups. Save Lives, Do Backups!1
How to recover NTFS partition with directory structure?
### What I've already tried:
I've googled and found some recovery softwares but nothing worked. Most recovery software will scan the HD for lost files and list them by types. The directory structure and the file name is lost. So far, no success in recovering anything. I've around 350GB of items to be recovered from a 500GB external HD. One of the recovery software(DMDE) was able to show the deleted partition and I can navigate through all its folders but free version didn't recovered more than a few files.
### What I need:
I need a software which can restore the whole partition. If recovering the whole partition is not possible, then I'd like to backup all the files in the HD with all its directory structure.
My present state of mind:
I'm totally mad. Someone just help me, please.
***How I messed up my external HD:***
I made an empty partition in it. Turned on Storage Spaces in Windows. I didn't know that Storage Spaces formats the full HD and make a new partition in it. I removed instantly when I notice my HD's partition is gone in "My PC"4
The ocr a level in the UK is properly messed up - it's beyond outdated and irrelevant, with very little programming involved. The GCSE is even worse - this year they literally removed all programming (coursework) - like how is that supposed to teach you anything relevant? The GCSE from the year before was much more relevant, though still not perfect, as it had much more of a focus on programming and development. But hey, what can you do? The education system will do what it wants. All we need is to get people from the industry to create exams and the syllabus, to help ensure they are more relevant. I ranted on a bit but hey, hopefully we can change it for the future generations, as I find there are very few kids interested in programming these days. Here's to change
When you get called from someone at two employers back because of some Python code you wrote back then asking why their changes in the code do not work and you know exactly by the way they talk they just messed up the indentation. *facepalm*
Why do I put documentation in my files when people do not know the basics?2
All pages are done properly, here comes the client editing the pages, now its messed up... Still my fault 😭😭😭
I was in my IDE writing up a new program, but my compiler didn't accept the encoding format of the files. Because I used special characters, it flipped a lot of encodings around. Then I changed my projects master encoding, then all of the source files they all messed up. The all the files were composed of "????????" I went to a backup and they were messed up too. I exploded... Control Z couldn't even be my hero this time.3
today /today/the rainbow//place/over//the rainbow/all//over/is//all/nano//is/my code//nano/is messed up/place today
Messed up with my virtualServers in my router.
Now I need a VPN, to connect with internet in my own home.😞😞
While hand-testing comment-posting functionality messed up the migrations and damaged local db. Had to recreate the whole set up (users, posts, etc) in order to resume the testing by hand.
Should've written the tests ;(
I wonder if there is any tool to measure the amount of spaghetti code in my project... it feels really messed up.
Anyone got a testing tool at hand for it?5
I installed Ubuntu... I messed up and I deleted the EFI entry of a NTFS hard drive in which I have all my important data... The NTFS deasapeared... Do you have any tool to recommend to recover my data... 😫😫4
TFW you have to ask if Google is ACTUALLY down, or if you messed up your local network settings and cut yourself off from half of the Internet again.1
Has anyone else installed the latest beta for Xcode on an iMac and found fuck all of the iPhone simulators work? Or have I done the impossible on a mac and messed up something on the install (quite how I'd have achieved it I don't know, and to be honest I can't be fucked looking through the .log files)1
So, yesterday my colleague decided to upgrade his OS from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04.
He was working on some projects within containers. Stopped the containers and started upgrade as it was EOD.
Guess what, the update failed and it messed up his system. Now the system boots but crashes after few min. Docker won't start.4
I hate the Laravel community more than Laravel itself because they tolerated it to develop upto version 5.x with Laravel still pointing out errors in framework's codebase rather than a proper traceback to user's code.
Messed up shit.By Laravel.By PHP :)3
I did know some people would negatively takes my honesty.
To be honest. I don't really like compliments. There's nothing in myself. I never expect any compliment. I'm hideous in fact. That's why I join devRant.
I feel comfortable when no one in sight.
But you know sometime, I feel that I want to tell what I feel. To anyone that don't know me in person (in regards to avoid getting messed up).
Is this a sign of mental disorder ?3
I'm working as a cnc operator. I've ask for some txt files, cos I wanted to write a small help to the job management. He said it's ok, but he can't gove me the files, cos there is some problem with the system, he'll have to call the IT department. When he clicked to the file, notepad popped up instead of wordpad and it messed up the outlook of the text. So when I've changed the default applicaton to all txt files to wordpad, he looked at me like I would be Mr. Robot...
I have anxiety attacks and i wanted to get my mind of things. I took 2 internships at once so that my mind would stay focused. Turned out that was really the worst idea i ever came up with.
I was fretting a lot. People calling me from different time zones at 1-2 am midnight asking me about updates. Things went completely messed up faught with my friends.
So i messaged my boss. I told him i have some problems in life i need time to sort it. And believe me he said take a month off.
He is really the coolest boss i know (out of the 4 i ever worked dor 😅)
Guys a lesson don't overdo the things you love. You want to make it a good experience. But making it unbearable to yourself can make you hate your love for coding.7
In order to make PRs/codebase more readable and 'arranged', I introduced common formatter in team since people were using different IDEs.
Still, there were missed PRs coming. Turned out people aren't used to formatting. So I created macros for different IDEs, to format on save, when keypress 'cmd+s' happens.. Found out this is common practice in many places.
Still, PRs are coming messed up...
Turned out people don't use 'cmd + s' at all... they use IDEs' auto-save support.
Now I'm out of ideas... Any help?2
I sort of just stumbled into wanting to be a dev. Roughly the time of high school I found out about different game makers and messed around with them for a while for fun, not thinking that I could make games for a living. Mind you, I've been playing games for many years, starting off with Atari 2600. it wasn't until after high school that I saw about a degree in game design and development and enrolled in school. Although that didn't work out for me and left college, took a break from programming for some years, I still ended up pursuing wanting to be a dev.
The charging port on my Galaxy S8 is messed up and is constantly disconnecting while charging, which results in the phone either slow charging or just got charging at all.
I thought I got the monthly phone insurance through Verizon and I was just gonna pay the deductible and get the phone replaced, but apparently I don't actually have the insurance even though I could've sworn I did. So that option is out the window.
So now I'm left with 3 other options:
1.) Pay $100 to get the charging port repaired at a local repair shop
2.) Pay off the remaining $200 I owe on the phone and get a phone upgrade from Verizon (because I am due for an upgrade)
3.) Get the upgrade but still keep my current phone on my plan and just pay the remaining $200 off monthly like I have been since I got the phone, except I'd also be paying for a second phone. Which is fine, because either way I'd be paying the $200. It's just a question of paying it in a lump sum or paying it monthly. Either works for me, it's $200 both ways
The downside of upgrading now is that I wouldn't be able to get the Galaxy S10 when that comes out, and that's what I've been waiting for as I prefer the smaller Galaxy S phones over the Galaxy Notes.
I suppose I could trade in whichever phone I get when the S10 comes out, but that would be a huge hassle and I'd have to pay at least 50% of the phone off in order for it to be eligible for trade-in
One of my first rants was about adding a 1 to the wrong part of an extensive equation.
Just had the new guy move it back to where I had it messed up initially. It took him a few minutes to understand why his changes weren't working.
To not feeling stupid anymore. 🍻
everything is fine when you didn't forget to put container class inside div. otherwise you need to find out why everything messed up for few hours.
Fucking build system strikes again. I dont give a fuck who messed up what. My thing works so fucking merge it up you stupid idiot wannabe robust piez'a'shit. This screwing around to make it work is consuming more time than the actual programming. And it's tools always break down and you can just as well backup everything and delete the whole docker image and start over. And yet people always go like, we put emphasis on good work environment. Well this is giving me cancer. Oaaaah! FfffhhuucK! Throw the whole build machine down the stairs and then beat it with a stick. No build is the same state we have minus me going ape shit evry week. Or just cancel all deadlines if Timmy is cousins brother and always had passion for turd build systems... or i dont know why this thing is still in place. Delete it. Fuck!3
Tomorrows meeting couldn't be more messed up
•boss(we are kind a thing now)and her ex sitting at the same table while she tries not to kill him
•me sitting there with someone else's shitty website with 20 day old code to show as a back end (previous dev was a cunt and deleted all copies from everywhere)
•them expecting a junior dev to build a whole accounting package on the 20day old code
• crying on the inside 😱😱😱5
Some developers incopetence can be limitless. I found e-shop which uses creative but totally silly way of integrating with e-mails. See my last rant (they send e-mail with my 'From' to themselves). As I sent them delivery report (I have SPF enabled) and wrote them what is wrong, they apologized when I came to pick up the goods and were glad that I forwarded the report (otherwise my order would be quite delayed). But hey, everything is fine, they are working on new e-shop. I said great, hopefully it wouldn't be this messed up. And I was told that yeah, the new one will block .net and .com addresses right away. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? How can somebody use their incompetence as a reason to screw up even more! So next time, I'll probably use my local e-mail with SPF enabled to tech them to blick all e-mails and do stuff properly.
yup! your usual monday morning full of stress, where you drive to work early and know your timeline is messed up1
Pushing an update with bugs is the worst thing yo happen yo a dev on Thursday, because you know yout Friday is messed up
Had to install .net 1.1 to try and get some shitty old db application to work. Still doesn't work, but it messed up all my wcf services. Fml. >_<3
Recently attended an interview. The guy was some random company consultant. Job description was for spring-boot (also required templating engine experience). He was asking me whether I know angular and JEE (completely different and kinda opposite of the job desc). That's a bummer but good thing I've messed around with these once or twice so I know whatsup.
Also, who the fuck has already got 7 programmers and wants to double up to 14 by only adding university students to the team (after teaching them angular and jee for a month, but whatever, its only a fucking month), in order to complete a new project with tight deadlines?
I don't think I'm sticking with this one...2
Even though we have sophisticated CD pipeline, decided to modify war on server (modifying 1 source file, compile it and patch it on server (Java based)). Just cause CD takes 4 hours and we "only have" 15 mins to do it. So manual patching with rush job. Now when I think about it, I cringe and thank the dev ducks that we didn't messed it up even worse!1
"If we make the changes ourselves, we won't have to pay for the changes!"
"But what if something gets messed up?"
"Then they'll fix it for free! Either way, we don't have to pay anything! I'm friggin' brilliant!"
"Why would they fix it for free?"
"Can't hear you over the bonus I'm giving myself for my brilliant idea."
Found this while browsing comments on Clients From Hell.2
I, I don’t even know how to search this... when I run an app from Visual Studio in IE (cancer, I know it’s a long story and above my head) my kerning is a mess. When I publish the same app to the dev server, it’s fine. The kerning appears to be the only thing messed up.3
Me, week 2 at new job, meeting with a separate team of fellow Python users: "Hey what software tests do you have for this? I am interested to learn your testing structure."
Dev1: "We don't really have any."
Dev2: "I have a Ruby script that tests this one thing."
Dev3: "why did you do it in Ruby? Why not Python?"
Dev2: "oh well Dev4 started in Ruby."
Me: *this is going to blow up but I am too new to tell them what to do*
Last week, these guys messed up 500 files in production with "undefined" in the filenames. 😣 I think it's time to introduce them to tests...1
I definitely want to program/code for my career, creating things and solving problems is cool, but I just started doing game development and IT'S SO COOL. I may have messed up my plans for my life :/
Last nite, one of my projects started crashing with a ClassCastException because it couldn't cast a string to a boolean, inside an if. This is Java. You can't even run a project if you evaluate a string inside an if. Has anyone seen such a thing before? I'm running BBQLinux which at least for me it has a lot of permissions issues and somehow things got so f'd up that it even messed up the Android image to a point that the compiler couldn't find a method to set a string into a TextView. I'm not kidding.2
i just learnt how much clearcase sucks the hard way. i always used git for personal projects and am used to finding a simple solution to any problem at most one stackoverflow away, i just messed up my local repo, and experienced people could not manage to undo it. i mean come on, this is a f**king versioning software, how hard can it be to delete everything local and re-pull from remote without messing up configuration files? either clearcase has some serious design shortcomings for my understanding of a versioning software, or it is so overly complicated that nobody actually knows how to revert this mistake.2
When your quite amazed about your system looking messed up on clients PC. And found out that her Display drivers were outdated. Its like opening it on IE browser. hehe. When I updated the drivers and then it looks good again . Horay. :)3
I'm moving my React development to Linux VM as something is messed up in Windows npm...
I would like an IDE somewhat similar in features to Webstorm.
What's a good one? Needs to be GUI, not vim, don't feel like going thru the learning curve.21
Client: Are we getting the finished site next Monday?
Supervisor: no it should be the week after, that's the date I have on our dev schedule.
1st week into the project, we pointed out the PM messed up the project end date (he took beginning of the final week instead of the end of week) and apparently he(& CEO) didn't bother to inform the client about the mistake.
WTF PM you f-ed up every single project since joining the company
Having some issues with my laptop seizing up in graphical linux desktop environments, probably due to some peripheral power management. I saw there was a bios setting for "make linux work" but I couldn't find mention of it in the manual (why is this usually so hard to find, anyway?), so I googled a bit before I messed with it.
Worst case I guess I'd just reset the bios, but it always blows my mind seeing issues like these go seemingly unaddressed. That's a 12 page discussion from 2018 where you brick your laptop - a fairly high end one at that - by flipping a bool and the latest response is "Same issue here".
Is it just PR practice to not acknowledge these things or is it likely that they are legitimately unaware? Does it not get escalated properly or do they reckon there's not enough benefit to address it?
Whatever the case, my faith in Lenovo is certainly starting to show cracks. I used to see it as the "correct" laptop brand, but nowadays I'm equally iffy about all of them.3
I open Photoshop, I open an image, I start editing colors. I think to myself "I need to change units to pixels instead of inches". I open the "Preferences - Units" menu. I approach the mouse and click on the selection box for units.... My screens go crazy suddenly and I get a BSOD...
The computer reboots, refuses to repair, complains it can't write on the disk. I launch UBCD, start TestDisk, it tells me my MFT and the mirror MFT are both completely messed up and the partition contents as well... Wow wow... What the...?!
Thank you Intel GFX system driver.
Well today I had to update my windows.. What a coincident that this update messed my partition table and cleaned up partition with linux
That's how you kill competition XD. At least i had all files in cloud
PS W removed L so I removed him
I messed up something with my git and now it opens git log everytime in vim, which i don't want. Is there any way I can just print it using less or cat and not open in vim?1
Monday commute, and the infrastructure between my city and Kortrijk was all messed up.
Result, an hour of standing still
last month i got a project signed to build an app to do few idiotic things, the whole point of it was for my client to earn money using google reward video (imagine). well i've worked on a lot of projects and this one seemed to be too simple. after checking Ionic website i saw lots of plugins among them where admobs-free and admobs-plus and even a paid version so i checked them out and it seemed to be pretty awesome, well. after a month i can only tell you this: DO NOT EVER USE IONIC. NEVER. you should constantly remove platforms and add it again and even so it gets messed up quickly. right now i just regret that i started this project with ionic and i cannot tell you how many bugs i ran into. JUST DON'T USE IT!
recently, I was working on a project to playback archived call recordings, and another developer was hired. part of my job is also to support a third party automation framework for customers, so I got "seconded" to support a proof of concept. the original project had now been messed up, it works, however, the functionality that made it secure has been MASSIVELY compromised for the sake of effort. I've tried to cause a stink as we have a major customer who will fail the next PCI audit. opinions on the situation. the other developer has a lot more experience, but seems to have chosen to satisfy management on deadlines over the original spec...
My Android Studio has refused starting up. Problem started after I downloaded v3 which is unstable and thought it could co-exist with v2.3. It messed up my project on v2.3 but I managed to fix it.
Then I did an upgrade on the same v2.3 then everything went south⬇. Now it doesn't start. I've tried changing environment variables for Java. Uninstalled and reinstalled but no luck.
Pls, how do I remedy this?
N.B: right now I am installing IntelliJ as an alternative1
Last 2 days went as following:
This is a mess I've got to fix it before we can't actually do work.
Today: fixed finally now let's run
Wtf styles all messed up.
(Check source code)
Third party source changed wtf.
Can it be fixed:
Checks over whole page. Noooo even html wrong. Typescript wrong.
Rewrite 3 months worth of work in 2 days
Wat Do you Do When you produce shit Code and a coworker is angry on you because He needs to work with it and fix everything you messed up?1
Some people just cant write BEM and sass with a little bit of common sense!!! Arrrrrhhhh this shit is just so messed up!!
after some months i finally fiddled around with python again. trying to make an executable using 3.7 i finally decided to switch back to 3.6 since pyinstaller was said to be compatible. still nothing works. but instead default directories are messed up. damn.
