I have a dual boot machine, logged into windows after a while(months) . Fucker 5 hours to update. Now that it's updated, I did the task I had to do and shifted back to Linux. Now all my other drives, which I didn't so much as touch with windows are fucking read only for some reason!

2 fucking hours spent on trying to find the problem, now I realize thag that after the fuckmaster's update, They reset all my settings and the dicklickin Fast Startup was on again!

During my final year at graduation,
I was helping a colleague dual booting Linux Mint with Win10.
Asked her to restart Win10; she didn't know how to.
Now, I've no idea how much more user friendly can Microsoft make it, and how much more dumb people can be.

Dual 27" Dell 4K HDR monitors, plus a Samsung 1080p and the retina display. My poor 2015 MacBook Pro with a Radeon R9 M370X 2GB can barely handle it. But there's just so much resolution that it's totally worth it!

I couldn't resist the built-in dual displayport connectors, so I brought my laptop into the office to see the dual 4k displays on it. I will never be this productive again.

Dual Boot Linux & Windows.

I hardly ever see anyone do it right. And there is just two tricks that make a completely new experience out of it. I am not sharing it with you to be nice, I am sharing because I am curious if you're already doing it.

1. Install on a second hard drive, not a different partition. Learn which button to hold on the boot screen to select the boot drive. You can still chain-load via Grub, but the major advantage, updates of neither OS will fuck up your boot loader. You can update it abso-fucking-lutely risk free. Second advantage, advice 2. becomes trivially easy.

2. Set up a virtual machine. Select as its hard drive the raw disk volume where you have installed your Windows. You can do this with VirtualBox, but QEMU with virtual machine manager make is far easier to set this up in. You can now start Windows under Linux as a virtual machine. You can always start a small application, but the big deal is installing. Start a Steam download, have it installed and ready without switching over. Running windows updates. And when you then have time to play the game, just reboot and you have it already installed.

I feel like many are not aware that you can start a virtual machine of a real hard drive. It's one of those things that improve usability of it enormously. It's something where many will just not think about it because they keep dual booting and virtual machines in two different categories in their brains, but immediately will think it is obvious as soon as they hear about it.

So, who already did this? Raise your hands!

Sometimes, I really fucking hate Windows.

Having trialled Linux for a week on a spare HDD, I wanted to move to a proper dual boot with Windows on my SSD, and I decided I may as well downgrade to Windows 7 at the same time (10 had started to really annoy me).

Booting into the initial USB yielded an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. Hmm, not a great start. Turns out the Windows install USB doesn't like the rear USB ports or the wireless mouse. Strange but plugged in a spare USB mouse into the front and could install Windows.

This install was very unhappy about not having SP1 - to the point where I couldn't even install the network drivers so I could download SP1. Fine, I just downloaded an ISO with SP1 on my Mac.

Then I discovered that you can only really make a Windows USB with Windows. But I've just removed both my Windows and Linux partitions so I can reinstall them ...

After hours of searching and trying to create a bootable USB on my Mac, I finally give up and install a trial of Parallels. So I ended up using the same ISO to install a VM of Windows on my Mac, so I can create a bootable USB, so I can install Windows on my desktop. Well done Microsoft ...

And then I needed to install various drivers for the install to be even remotely useable.

To top it all off: Linux just worked. The keyboard and wireless mouse worked when installing. I didn't need to do any additional set up to be able to use it all. It can even use all 3 monitors, rather than just the 2 that Windows recognises for some bizarre reason.

Thanks to Windows being special, I've lost a day of productivity 😡

Tried to dual boot Arch with Windows yesterday.

Everything was going smoothly. Shrunk the C: partition, ran the installer, installed the OS fine. But it was still booting straight to Windows.

So I edited the BCD to point to Grub instead of Wilndows. Then the plan was to boot into Arch, find Windows, and add it to Grub, problem solved.

Wrong. I had forgotten to disable secure boot. Arch and Grub were booting in BIOS mode, but Windows was UEFI. Grub couldn't boot or even see Windows.

So now I was stuck with just Arch. So I flashed a Windows drive, booted from that, automatic startup repair failed. Opened up the command prompt, tried to rebuild the BCD from there. Surely I can just rebuild it and forget about trying to dual boot right? I just want to get back to being able to use my PC.

Wrong again. Didn't find Windows. Had to get rid of the BCD file before I could rebuild it, but couldn't find it. Found out that I could use diskpart to mount the system partition and assign it a drive letter, renamed the BCD, rebuilt it, and finally was able to reboot into Windows.

Learn from my arrogance. First time Linux users should not attempt to install Arch, let alone do it alongside Windows on the same disk.

I think it's about time I Dual booted my Home PC with Windows 10 and Ubuntu GNOME. Been living the Windows exclusive life for to long.

Recently got around to dual booting my home machine with Ubuntu.

Now every time I log in, in my head i hear the kid from Jurassic Park exclaim "this is a unix system!"

I have an Acer dual GPU with Nvidia, guess what Gnome + Nvidia = bugs, yeah I probably should know that but I didn't, and I spend the last hour recovering my PC after installing Nvidia drivers. Why can't you guys (Gnome, Nvidia) agree on something?

For those who use Windows, have a desktop and notebook computer and want to use the same keyboard and mouse on both.
Windows has a program called "Mouse without Borders" that let you use the mouse and keyboard of one computer on another like a dual monitor setup. It's works via LAN and I have to say that I haven't any lag. You can copy text from one computer and paste into another and you can drag files too (that are copied to a special folder).

My desktop computer has a big monitor and of course it's better than my notebook and I don't want to spend money in another monitor, so this is a life saver for those who are in the same situation.

My father had a very bulky laptop built by HP (I Do not remember any name of it).
It used to have sliding switch to open ,I used to put my whole power into open it.
It was running windows 98.

All I knew that time is
Start -> All program -> Accessories -> Games -> 3D Pinball !!

Then ,my father saw I was quite liking the games ,and he dual booted with fedora. I remember there was game tab with lots of flash games in fedora.
Like Tetris, games similar to candy crush, snake etc

BTW I got to know it was dual boot many years later.
I remember fedora because of that "f" logo.
I still remembered that After dual booting to Fedora, I was unable to start windows to play pinball (due to the boot option u get), I used to complain my mom that pinball opens if father starts the laptop, it doesn't open when I start!

Note to self, never try to install Ubuntu from the live usb when trying the "demo", prefer to install on boot, because this fucker encountered an error, forced me to reboot then decided to occupy the whole disk and wipe Windows out.

Things I mostly work on: Node frameworks, React Native and some Java and C++ (QT)

I know that even a dual core is enough for this but it takes a while even for a webpack build to complete in my current build.

I got this in the shop today: a fully-working XP POS AiO with an x86 processor. 2.2GHz Celeron dual-core, 2GB RAM, 150GB HDD. Y'all can have it for free, but no company will ship it, so you gotta come get it.

I could see myself buying the next generation of Surface Duo, looks promising than other dual screen devices I have seen.

So I locked my windows work computer before the lunch break, came back to Ubuntu's login screen... (I dual boot)

So windows just randomly restarted? Rip if I forgot to save something...

Keyboard in my laptop died, mobo issue. Work gave me an ex-lease Dell E6430s. First thing I did was dual boot with Ubuntu 16.10 - can't believe how smooth it was. When I put Debian on my Lenovo G570 I had a ton of issues. I love Linux.

So I didn't boot up my Windows 10 from more that a month now (dual boot).
I wonder how many eternities it will take to update when I shut it down to switch back to Linux. :/

I have a gaming laptop with a 125gb ssd and 1 TB secondary drive. Ssd has just 20 GB free.

I wanna dual boot windows 10 and arch. Most of the secondary drive is full of steam games. Win 10 for gaming and arch is for projects.

What's a good way to partition the drives for arch? I can't guess how much space either will need in the future. And what do I do with the other drive?

So I installed a Linux distro as my primary operating system for my laptop, I needed to use my windows installation... But idiot me did a full hard drive erase installation and not a dual boot didn't I...

*Sigh* now to download a windows 10 ISO!

I have dabbled with Linux quite a few times in the past (dual booting with Windows) and I'm looking to get into it again. Any recommendations? Any horror stories?

So far I've daily driven Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, and CrunchBang. KDE and Gnome are my go-to DEs.

Dual ported RAM is somethin i kinda theorised to exist. And since today i know it does.
For those unaware: Its RAM that can be acessed via two address and data lines combined and with hardware semaphores.

It's not an easy task to explain to your wife, why you need a new laptop... even if the current one has an 1.4 dual core amd APU (passmark rating: ~870) and only 4GB ram.

TIL: new M2 MacBooks officially support only single external screen. Not even the Pro class supports dual. It supports single 6K monitor, but I've failed to find any userfriendly ways to get good tiling which would be equivalent to multi-monitor. The only native tilling is left/right split. TB3 can handle 3x2K or 2x4K, but Apple said "fuck you and your multi-monitor setup".
I ain't mad tho. The guy upgrading to M2 sold me his dual monitors for a really good price.

My experience with Fedora:

1. Copy to thumb drive
2. Find out the thumb drive wasn't good enough
3.copied to another thumb drive
4.Successfully booted
5.start installation
6.Shit forgot to partition my NTFS drives
7.Back to Windows to do it
8.back to install again
9.Start installation, setup partitioning
10. Didnt notice that my EFI partition wasn't detected
11.Fedora tries to install its bootloader in God knows what place
12.bootloader install fail
13.reboot comp
14. Missing operating system
15. Spend my whole fucking night repairing the boot partition and the problem was a fuckin missing BOOT flag
16. No grub
17.spent another decade trying to fix it
18. Give up and get some sleep

Probably Fedora will have to wait for another day, tiring experience

Have been a Windows user since many years. But at college I do use ubuntu and am familiar with it. So now I have developed interest in using Linux due to its simplicity and ease of use.
But for some tasks I still need Windows. So thinking to Dual boot my laptop. Have heard dual boot harms the laptop, makes it slow, blah blah.

So Is it advisable to Dualboot on a same machine?

Ended up with 16.04 and 18.04 ubuntu in dual boot. (see last rant).
Fixed graphics issues on 18.04. The fix envolved setting stuff in grub. Ok.
Now we apparently need 16.04 again and can kich the 18.04.
np. Let me just boot my 16.04

It boiled down to the grub settings. so Depending on if I need 18.04 or 16.04 I need to fiddle with grub. great.
And now we don't neet 18.04 at all. So I tried to do something not in the last minute once, and it backfired completly. Wasted 5h on this shit this week. Fk this.

So I deleted all of my games, pron, and installers just to free up some space for testing dual boot in my laptop.

I will study all the basic commands in terminal and make use of my time to coding.

Tried for dual boot ubuntu first time ever, and it was not working because of legacy boot, got tired and just installed ubuntu without realizing that it will fomat the whole disk,
