bitchface micromanager keeps telling me i don't communicate enough, don't do enough, am not fast enough, etc.
So i've been sending her a weekly summary of ~50 bullet points of things I did during the week, issues encountered, workarounds found, research findings, who i talked to, etc. all organized by task with links to the tickets.
My work volume hasn't increased (probably decreased, actually) but it certainly looks like I'm doing a lot. probably because i am? but she doesn't listen during standup, so... victory by a hundred bullet points it is!29 -
Hey, Root? How do you test your slow query ticket, again? I didn't bother reading the giant green "Testing notes:" box on the ticket. Yeah, could you explain it while I don't bother to listen and talk over you? Thanks.
And later:
Hey Root. I'm the DBA. Could you explain exactly what you're doing in this ticket, because i can't understand it. What are these new columns? Where is the new query? What are you doing? And why? Oh, the ticket? Yeah, I didn't bother to read it. There was too much text filled with things like implementation details, query optimization findings, overall benchmarking results, the purpose of the new columns, and i just couldn't care enough to read any of that. Yeah, I also don't know how to find the query it's running now. Yep, have complete access to the console and DB and query log. Still can't figure it out.
And later:
Hey Root. We pulled your urgent fix ticket from the release. You know, the one that SysOps and Data and even execs have been demanding? The one you finished three months ago? Yep, the problem is still taking down production every week or so, but we just can't verify that your fix is good enough. Even though the changes are pretty minimal, you've said it's 8x faster, and provided benchmark findings, we just ... don't know how to get the query it's running out of the code. or how check the query logs to find it. So. we just don't know if it's good enough.
Also, we goofed up when deploying and the testing database is gone, so now we can't test it since there are no records. Nevermind that you provided snippets to remedy exactly scenario in the ticket description you wrote three months ago.
And later:
Hey Root: Why did you take so long on this ticket? It has sat for so long now that someone else filed a ticket for it, with investigation findings. You know it's bringing down production, and it's kind of urgent. Maybe you should have prioritized it more, or written up better notes. You really need to communicate better. This is why we can't trust you to get things out.
*twitchy smile*rant useless people you suck because we are incompetent what's a query log? it's all your fault this is super urgent let's defer it ticket notes too long; didn't read21 -

It’s one-on-one time yet again this week!
I have a 1:1 with my boss every Thursday from 11:30am to 12:00 noon. They often run 45 minutes instead of the planned 30.
Why do I have these? I complained that I have too many meetings, and that it’s hard to get my work done around them (especially while burned out). So as a remedy he scheduled a weekly meeting, every Thursday, so he can make sure I’m getting enough work done. Totally makes sense, right?
And every Thursday he’s 15-25 minutes late. And because they always run long, I lose a full hour or more of time I could have used to get my work done. See the problem?
Today he was 36 minutes late.
Seriously, how disrespectful can he be?24 -
Being told I’m not experienced enough to get a senior dev job I interviewed for.
Even though I aced the first 4 interview rounds, the tech test feedback was “the best solution they had ever seen”, and I’ve been a senior dev for 25 years.
Time wasting assholes.3 -
I’m a 25 year old female navigating into coding with no friends who are coders. I feel very alone in this journey and am reaching out on this website to make friends and get advice to become. A developer. I am currently doing an internship and don’t have a job and my mentor is very arrogant and mean and just tells me to google everything and won’t answer questions. It seems like the prospect of ever getting a job or being good enough is hopeless. My mentor is very intimidating and discouraging. I need some support.63

Someone on a Facebook group asking how they can make a video auto-play with sound at maximum when a visitor hits the home page.
Me: Here’s how: Log into your site via SSH and cd to the docroot. Type “rm -rf” and hit Enter. Then throw your laptop in the river and go work at McDonald’s. Because if you are stupid enough to ask this question, you are too stupid to be allowed to own a website.7 -
Manager: We will be building a new app. THIS TIME EVERYTHING MUST BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, ANYTHING LESS THAN TOP QUALITY WORK WILL BE REJECTED!!
*Not even 2 days into the new project*
Manager: Ok that’s good enough, we can fix it later. Can you go quicker on the next feature? Just sacrifice a bit of quality so we get these tickets closed as fast as possible. I said we can fix it later. Getting tickets closed asap is top priority.
Dev: …3 -
Root has standup.
Root: I had no ticket yesterday morning, so I followed up on <TicketA> with <PersonA> and updated it in Jira and linked its related tickets; talked with <PersonB> about <TicketB>, and reviewed code review comments on <TicketC>, and thought about those while looking into the CI spec failure on <TicketD>. I collapsed for 3 hours before fixing it. Halfway through the collapse, I talked with <PersonC> on <TicketC> CR comments and the spec issue in <TicketD>, then went to lay down again. Afterward, I solved the spec issue in <TicketD>, and started on the new ticket <TicketE> before calling it a day. Plans today are to <…>.
Manager, in private: I need you to proactively let me know if you’re taking long breaks and aren’t working as this impacts business flow.
—————
Yeah.
My update was four times longer than the others’ despite her not giving me a ticket to work on. I responded to slack while I was collapsed on the floor and discussed tickets. And, after I recovered, I went back to work to finish my 8h shift. But this isn’t good enough? And I need to let her know in advance when I’m going to collapse and be a bloody mental zombie for hours? It would be amazing if I knew. I barely have a few minutes notice, and that’s only if I’m really paying attention and looking for signs.
And (conjecture) she probably still thinks I’m not performing well enough. “Affecting our business flow” probably means she’s angry I didn’t talk to other people about low-priority <TicketE> yesterday while I was laying on the damned floor.
Goddamn I hate her.13 -
A female boss I worked for, pulled an employee retention tactic that still gives me the chills.
She paid dogshit salaries to all her employees. And yelled at them enough to keep them overworked and burnt out.
When one of them tried to resign, she said "fine you can leave us but I won't be giving you any salary slips, no experience/recommendation letter and neither acknowledge that you ever worked here.
You get to leave the company when I decide for you.
You have already stayed here so long that if you decide to disappear tomorrow it will leave a gap on your resume in your next interview."18 -
Manager: Messages not visible! bug ticket!!!!
Dev: oh fuck, there's an issue with our chat system, not good! _inspects ticket_ oh, it's just a display issue that actually is according to the previous spec, yawn...
Dev: please describe the bug better next time, I though we had a major outage, this is simply a small design issue...
Manager: ...
Dev: ...
I think I'm quitting soon guys. I literally do not get paid enough to deal with these incompetent idiots each day.
Meanwhile:
Management: forget your shitty salary, take one for the team, you get 3% of the shares in the company!!!!
Dev: what fucking shares, you haven't even converted to a corporation yet, THERE ARE NO SHARES
Management: ...

Recruiter: "Take this culture survey. It's not a test. There are no right or wrong answers."
Me, internal voice: Then why give me a list of words to choose from that I think describe me best and another list of words to choose from that describe how I ought to behave at work? Clearly, there's a matchup you're trying to do here. So clearly there's going to be a wrong answer if I don't choose enough of the former to match the latter.4 -
I lost my job 😅 tbh did me a favour. I was backend, this guy was frontend and was a typical opinionated JavaScript, magpie dev and I just did not give 2 fucks about what he thought was “amazballs” and we had a small tiff, we’ll he was arguing, I was trying to do my job and I just didn’t care enough about his feelings on the subject, forget what it was about but I think it was trivial. But anyway, I was let go soon after 😅15

So I got laid off because they told me I wasn't communicating enough.

My neighbors are absolute assholes.
I can't get enough sleep. This is driving me nuts. Worst of all, they're all students. I've called the cops on them once, but still the same behavior.
Am about to lose it, ngl.30 -
New HOE came. He “streamlined” the processes and “standardised” the policies. And in turn.. fucked up the whole startup feel of my company.
I saw it happening right in front of my eyes in a matter of only few months.
Earlier, things were flexible, work was fun, people were even ready to put in more hours because we were all having fun. Now, work feels like work, fun is gone, frustration has become normal, and the most frustrating part is that.. WFH is now a “privilege”.
Fuck this shit man! That fucker exhausted the whole company in just a few months. Given enough time, he will be the end of this company.8 -
Out of all the bugs, the most annoying are the ones that come out and make me say "WTF?!?!? WHY THE FUCK HAS IT BEEN WORKING FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS??!!?!!??? THERE"S NO WAY IT COULD HAVE!"
When the bug surfaces, you investigate and see that it indeed IS a bug and there's no way it would ever work w/o a fix. But then SOMEHOW it's been working just fine for years....
It's like server elves went on strike and said "no more, it's enough covering that bug - it's time you fix it, lazy-ass idiot!"11 -
Paraphrased conversation I saw in a space forum:
dude1: Our galaxy is moving toward a large cluster of galaxies and we don't know why.
dude2: Could it be gravity?
dude1: No gravity isn't strong enough for the distances involved.
dude3: Those galaxies are sexy as fuck. Our galaxy wants to hit that.
dude4: Is our galaxy old enough for a cluster fuck? -
I can't breathe good air anymore. Water is being wasted. Fossil fuels are being wasted. Unnecessarily high number of vehicles on roads and most them have fucking one person sitting in them. They take out a fucking vehicle for fucking 200m. People throw trash everywhere without any regard for cleanliness. Prices are going up. Inefficient shit pieces exist in the market and people buy that shit. The world is going to hell. I hope I die soon enough to not know that is has.26

Not a coworker, but this guy who I went to uni with and was a real life saver when I was really down. (we played minecraft together)
... So, he is a real genius. One of those guys who I legit couldn't keep up with. His brain works, he doesn't bullshit his way through, he's not pretentious, he is legit a down to earth rare genius. Yet, he doesn't use his talents enough, he likes to work or go home to play minecraft. And he doesn't politically care enough, so I am almost sure that he will end up getting stuck in the defence force.
We're still friends. And I try my hardest to not be nosy and nag at him that he can do better. I mean, he is happy the way he is, and he is not ambitious. But the memory of him is a reminder that not everyone who gets somewhere is the best and brightest.36 -
A personal memo to all developers on devRant:
* Assume every external line of code, (including every service you consume) is an unreliable crock of flaming shit. These services can and will fail in the most glorious ways. Write your code to be resilient, and ASSUME FAILURE of dependencies. Even if it's your own team writing the other service.
Heard in a meeting today: "Your team's service outage is going to cause my service to corrupt the database!"
Response I wanted to give: "No, you asshat, my service outage is a normal part of living with microservices. Your app should have been smart enough to recognize the failure."8 -
My level of frustration with Microsoft is growing to a point that I'm unable to contain it.
They buy Github, it was a great tool for developers because is FUCKING WORKED! New features were never beta tested on users unless they requested it.
Why in the absolute fuck am I getting all these new experimental bullshit features that literally make it harder for me to do my god damned job?
They provide me NOTHING but grief and sleepless weekends while I fix the god damned pipeline that's worked perfectly fine for YEARS.
Your business model is bad and your products are SHIT.
Fuck you Microsoft, I cannot even stress it enough. If I had a time machine that could go back 5 years and my options were: Tell the world about Covid, make sure Trump never became president, or stop the Github purchse. I would hunt down and brutally attack the team of executives that decided to buy Microsoft.
Words cannot adequately describe how much I want Microsoft to fuck off. If the company was a person and they died in a house fire it wouldn't be enough.
I just want a VCS that does what it's supposed to do. I don't need pipelines, I don't need image repos, I don't need static code analysis.
I JUST NEED A FUCKING VCS THAT CONTROLS VERSIONS OF SOFTWARE YOU IGNORANT FUCKS.20 -

Ha ha ha ha. Fucking morons!
You brag about being a highly skilled company.
You tell me I don’t have enough experience despite three years of uninterrupted activity where I currently work
You’re willing to give me a chance (I just don’t know how to express my gratitude)

Thanks for wasting my time with three useless HR interviews you worthless DIPSHITS!2 -
Girlfriend: How much water did you drink today?
Me: About 3 litres.
Girlfriend: How much of that is coffee?
Me: 5 cups.
Girlfriend: How can you count coffee in that?
Me: Why not?
Girlfriend: It's diuretic.
Me: Yes, but it's still water that goes through my body.
Girlfriend: You're such a smart-ass, huh?
Me: Well, yes, I am.
Girlfriend: So why are you so tired if you think you're drinking enough water? Well?
Me: Never ask a question you don't want to know the answer to.
Girlfriend slammed the door.
So no, women don't want honest men. Guys, lie, lie, lie.
And now I can look at the error message.14 -
First, why didn't I know about this app sooner.
Second, a month into my new job as senior frontend and wonder am I good enough.
Third, I know I just need to get out of my head.
Lastly, glad to be here.7 -
Most tedious part of my day...
While meetings are boring and awful and all, it's probably spinup times for me. Each and every change requires a minimum of 35 seconds of spinup to test. If i'm testing something with mailers or other daemons, that increases to easily 90+ seconds (plus the worker thread pickup times).
It's not enough time to do anything useful, and more than enough time to lose my focus. It turns every task into boring, tedious struggle. It's awful.
Apart from my coworkers, this is the single worst part about my job. (Okay, the awful code quality totally pushes this to third place.)4 -
i kinda feel embarrassed all the time. i feel like it's never enough, i don't know enough, there's so much i don't know. i do enjoy my work and sometimes there are moments where i'm proud of what i've done, or these "i'm a fucking genious" moments when i solve a bug or a certain problem or when something finally works. but if i have to do something new, i tend to panic a bit, as long as i do not yet have a concrete solution in mind.
my perception contrasts with the feedback people give me, but even when i'm happy about the positive feedback, i tend to think to myself, "they're wrong, it's not that great"..4 -
I should just quit. I am not paid enough to deal with this pissing contest.
Reviewer:
Need to add instructions (on readme) for installing pnmp, or if possible, have the top-level npm i install it (lol).
Also, it looks like we are no longer using lerna? If that's right, let's remove the dependency; its dependencies give some security audit messages at install.
Me:
it's good enough for now. Added a new ticket to resolve package manager confusions. (Migrate to pnpm workspaces)
Reviewer:
I will probably be responsible for automating deployment of this (I deployed the webapp on cloudflare pages and there is no work that needs to be done. "automating deployment" literally means replacing npm with pnpm). I disagree that it's good enough for now.
Imagine all readmes on github document how to install yarn/pnpm.
Lesson learned:
If you think an OOP static site developer can't handle modern JS framework, you are probably right.2 -
Current lappy got about 4GB RAM and not enough cores. I can't even run krita without it slowing down more the more I work on a file.
It would be frustrating if only I wasn't so depressed.
So yeah, due to being broke and lack of nerves, I'm gonna completely stop working on the comic for now.23 -
My professor asked for some images of cool stuff I worked on for a presentation he is giving. So here is me moving fast enough to cause motion blur :) The code is using the camera to detect people, and then project the bounding box down in the lidar frame, and mask all the lidar points within that cone.
Anyway, if someone is familiar with super fast agglomerative clustering code in C++ (or even python, if it's efficient), please share it with me!7 -

Working in security for many years only granted me world-class paranoia about taking pictures of myself and my family. It even made it hard to keep in touch with my friends as we don’t live in the same country anymore.
The good side is that it pays well enough to grant me a platinum foil hat.8 -
Had a mental breakdown a few days ago. Crying like it's the end of the world when computer stopped working. I was a Picasso drawing of the hysteria, basically.
My exams are getting near, I'm really not ready; yet this chick keeps asking me about ten euros I borrowed from her a year and something back when we were going to a club they asked me to go to with them... Given her persistence that I should wire her the money (no PayPal tho) I assume she's up to something super shady. Why does she need my account info for?
Anyways, being annoyed by only ten euros (in our currency, it's not much, btw. It's less than two bags of expensive chips, or 5 dozen of the cheapest eggs on the market) and not studying enough, there is also my work. I feel so incompetent that I may just resign. Like... I'm not smart enough for this project. 😢 And I'm aware of it.
Put that on the side with this uni's project, which is very "Urghhhhh" because of too many people working on the same project, some of who need to be sent back to kindergarten to learn how to cooperate with others.
And in the middle of all of that, I'm trying to stay as zen as possible until the next mental breakdown. 😑😑😐
Thank you for reading this rant.7 -
“You’ll be working in a fast-paced environment…” ALWAYS means “We’re incompetent, we don’t realize it, we don’t hire enough people to spread out the workload, we don’t have a real process, and we’ll blame you, the new guy, the first time something goes wrong.”4
-
Monday morning: The last straw.
After talking about in a previous rant about how my client wants to fix bugs that keeps popping out after bug fix.
Today I discovered, that all C-levels, worked all Saturday to "fix my code" because it "didn't work" and we "needed bug fixes not pretty things".
The app version I was working on for the last week is gone. Without mentioning that their "CTO" wrote a fucking crappy code to disable features that I added, breaking the build step.
This shit is enough for me, I'm done!3 -
Hired a friend who is kindoff a spoiled brat. If me or the rest of the team tell him anything he answers with the team does not know enough to tell him what to do. The slightest words (why is it not done yer etc. seem to trigger his ego and threaten to resign). His skills are also not what i thought they were , they get the job done but thats pretty much it. Should i work to placate his ego or let him resign.10
-
At a previous company we hired an 18 year old guy and father from a minority and without a high school degree. He could write enough code to get the job. However, he took 3h long lunches, came in late to work and apparently had a problem taking orders from women. At one point all the juniors got an earful because of his attitude and he got let go, not long after. It still saddens me because he could have made a really good career if wasn't for his attitude.1

CEO: “Everyone has to come back to the office. No more COVID working from home nonsense. We need to work together in person to be truly effective.”
Everyone: “There aren’t enough offices and desks for everyone.”
CEO: “Oh, also, we’re laying off thousands.”
Everyone: “Well, ok, but there’s still not enough room for everyone to work together in the same spaces.”
CEO: “Ok, contractors can work from home to make room for the remaining full-time employees.”
Me, a contractor:3 -
My first contact with an actual computer was the Sinclair ZX80, a monster with 512 bytes of ram (as in 1/2 kbyte)
It had no storage so you had to enter every program every time and it was programmed in basic using key combinations, you could not just write the commands since it did not have memory enough to keep the full text in memory.
So you pressed the cmd key along with one of the letter keys and possibly shift to enter a command, like cmd+p for print and it stored s byte code.8 -
So I've got my first sort of proper gig. I'm tasked with writing...
A goddamn minecraft plugin in java.
Well, it's actually rather fun strangely enough. My ideas of payment were not declined but rather accepted, the other devs are nice and everything is going well for now.
Also: Do expect a mental breakdown post next week or so6 -
Fuck this completely abysmal CMS!!!!
Not even god damn Einstein would be smart enough to understand this stinky pile of legacy code!
No, it's not enough to write an HTML template in PHP with less than 500 lines of code, noooooo, every god damn template HAS TO BE AT LEAST 3000 FUCKING LINES OF CODE WITH RANDOM INCLUDES EVERYWHERE!!!
Every fucking thing I fix spawns at least 2 new bugs! I FUCKING CAN'T!!!
I swear, if I meet these fucking worms of developers... someone will eat fresh turds mixed with puke from a highway toilet!17 -
There are so many weird hacks in the quite legacy app I work with I could write a book about all them hacks…
But I must admit, the worst of them all is internal time. Yes, so some blockhead thought it’s a good idea to represent time in a manner completely removed from Datetime objects or timestamps or even string representations. Instead we deal with them as intervals represented by integers - and because this is not fucked up enough by itself, the internal time doesn’t start at midnight, yet the integer representations do. It’s a bloody mess. No wonder most of the bugs we face have to do with dates and time…5 -
Not goals. More like dream...
... To get into that one uni that I actually want for phd.
I have gotten so spoiled playing with robots and neural networks, that I can't even imagine falling that badly from grace to go back to... web development. Like I'm not looking down on it, it's just that I found my passion and there is not enough jobs available out there for me without going through phd or high-end research.
... And I honestly don't have a backup plan. There are choices, but I don't like any of them. So here goes hoping they accept me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯5 -
So our team is scaling and we've been handling increased workload and I've been wanting to hire two juniors ever since. Finally narrowed down the candidates to three, but I couldn't decide between them so after some careful considerations, I've decided to hire all three. Fingers crossed I have enough time to mentor and manage the three of them and I don't fuck them up.1
-
i was helping a friend who just started learning how to code and i realized that tutorials don't teach you how to read error messages and how to debug. that's stuff we learn from people, it's tacit knowledge. that's crazy to me, because those are such essential skills to a dev and i think just self learning is not enough. maybe coding is even more of a socially dependent skill than i ever thought. looking at it that way, stackoverflow is a good example of that, I can't really imagine being a dev without the dev community7
-
I hate backendphobia! It feels like so common nowadays. People scare other people with backend being too hard and stuff, and that feeling of scariness is something that infects lot of people. Please stop fearing the backend!
Yes, some backend stuff can be hard, but there's no good reason to fear it. I just hate it when I go to a new team and they all seem to be backendphobics idiots. I've build enough backends to not give in to the fear, pls stop scaring people.12 -

Fucking A.I. resume filter bots.
As if tech interviews weren't hard enough, I have to fill my resume with keywords to get past a bot! Every damn application and cover letter has to be unique.
And when I get past a bot, a hiring manager replies with "Sorry, you seem to have more experience with Typescript than JavaScript, and we can't take that risk."

More work-related than dev-related:
- Saying "yes" to extra work more often than necessary.
- Wanting to do everything myself and not delegating enough.
- Getting too stressed out.
- Avoiding conflicts and confrontations (even necessary ones!) and not being assertive enough.
- Overthinking everything.1 -
now that i paused the project with mr turdface PM and started working on other topics, i was hoping that finally i could get a bit more peace of mind. but now i'm down with headaches for several days and just feeling terribly sad.
i feel like i've torn out my own heart for this job and handed it on a silver platter, and now i feel like i've lost too much blood and there's not enough left for myself.5 -
How to run a productive meeting?
Have a written agenda (provided before the meeting, of course)
No "Lets talk about the service architecture" nonsense. Provide the exact details of what the outcome of the meeting should be. Even been lucky enough to cancel meetings when the agenda points are answered in a reply email. Its awesome.
As conditioned as we are about agendas, a few mgrs still skip the agenda and it ends up as you would imagine. At the end, everyone is like "Why are we here? What did we decide? Looks like we need another meeting..."4 -
My first job seems nice enough to stay.
Teammates are nice, work schedule is flexible, and free meals.
I think I am super lucky.6 -
Simulation doesn't provide enough framerate?
Easy. Change gravity, weights, and steps in the simulation.
Welcome to your real world.

About 3 years at a job I worked at, management moved my work desk right next to the toilet.
I had enough. I got up, packed my things and left the office without saying anything to anyone and got another job a week later.
Have you ever quit on the spot? If so, what was your breaking point?8 -

YouTube constantly shows me ads for marriage and dating apps for muslims.
... I just want to know the logic behind that. Neither am I a Muslim nor am I into marriage. If anything, I'm considered an abomination in Islam. (I know enough about main religions, ThankYouVeryMuch) You see, my conspiracy theory is that YouTube is trying to make me racist (or rather, religionist?) by showing me irrelevant ads on a constant basis to make me angry.
I'm onto you YouTube!!! 👀47 -
Does the entire project count? A startup got quite a lot of funds, decided to outsource. They did release a project to production, but then they decided to make a "new and improved" version that was supposed to do three times as much as the first one.
Problem was, the first product didn't have any customers. I'm not talking "not enough to pay for hosting". I mean exactly 0 customers. For half a year.
Needless to say, the money ran out. The v2 got scrapped first, then v1 got shut down
So in a sense the whole project was pointless. Or it was a money laundering scheme. Who knows at this point -
WTF is going on with marketers in LinkedIn?! I’m an engineer why the fuck are you trying to make me sell your product to a company I only code for, fucking spammy cunts contact sales and do your job I have enough with mine.7

That's it, YouTube. I am turning my ad blocker on again.
After this Lion King movie advertisement https://youtube.com/watch/... SCREAMED into my ear, I have had enough. Out of generousity, I turned off my ad blocker to let ad breaks play to support creators, and also out of slight curiousity which advertisements would be served to me. But after this aural abuse, I am turning it on again for the foreseeable future.9 -
PM: I don't like the number of meetings we have
Me: Oh I agree. We have too..
PM: We don't have enough of them.
Me: (oh... I was going to say that we need to cut back... But ok)
PM: I need better visibility into what everyone is doing.
Me: (so you wanna micromanage. Got it...)
Me: ... Gotcha, yup... Writing that down.3 -

I really despise solving competitive programming problems.
I truly believe it's okay to struggle with them and that people have different abilities. But these kind of problems are an easy way to make you hate yourself and think of yourself less.
I can't solve this problem --> I'm not a good programmer --> I'm not smart enough --> I'm not good enough like my peers who work at FA*G companies, ...
I know these interview problems are a filter and that recruiting is hard and the demand is always high and that they are nothing like the real work but, the reality is, you need to prepare if you want to get into one of the big companies with better perks and maybe better projects.3 -
That time when I ranted about wanting to commit suicide but not having enough energy to go and buy a gun.
That day in the evening, I asked my GF: "I think that the whole life is a humongous rationalization on top of biological avoidance of death".
She has an untreatable neurological disease. She told me "I found out it's a consensus among different philosophers. It absolutely is. I just prefer not to think about it".7 -
I’ve got the cold from hell and my last years performance review to write.
These things are fucking terrible and every time I read a cheesy corporate competency that I have to prove, I feel slightly sick.
Just got to find a way of saying ‘I spent the last year doing just enough not to get fired’ and make it sound like I’ve reinvented the wheel.
Think I might be looking for a new job soon.1 -
I think I’m going to lose my mind. This stupid website I’m working on keeps going down and at the worst times possible. Nothing we do seems to help. I’m again awakened in the middle of the night to attend to it and still have no good answers why. My anxiety is through the roof because I can’t get back to sleep after tonight’s outage. The client is beyond pissed even though a ton of problems would be solved if they would just get off of some legacy software and onto something more modern. But they insisted it be this way and the budget is already blown and then some even if they changed their minds. If it’s going to be that I continue losing so much sleep and sanity, I may just have to quit this job. I hate the thought of that because I always want to see things through to a happy conclusion. And I like my teammates and don’t want to let them down. But I’m too old for that kind of no-sleep development lifestyle now. Nobody’s shitty website is worth my physical and mental health.3

Linux nerds, here is a question,
I have a machine with 32 GB Ram, currently it is using 12.5 G and at the same time I see swap is used 1.55G/2.00G
why swap is used if i have enough Ram ?21 -
If you want to make a startup but don't because there is a similar product or "every niche is already occupied", quit thinking this way.
Yahoo could once easily buy Google. They even received the offer but rejected it. But as for now, Yahoo is nothing.
Tumblr was once a top social network, but they crumbled. Foursquare once was preinstalled to smartphones, and now it pretty much doesn't exist.
Blackberry was a giant, the number one smartphone manufacturer. Where are they now? It wasn't betrayal like it was with Nokia and Stephen Elop.
Matter of fact, I'm now working for the company that entered a heavily occupied niche and over the course of three years pushed every competitor out.
Sometimes giants crumble. Small products crumble way more often, just because there are more of them.
There is always enough room in every niche of every industry. Just enough for your startup. Now, as you can't hide under "it's already occupied, and I can do nothing about it" mindset, the only reason your startup won't make it is that you don't work on it. Yes, accepting it is way less comfortable than hiding, but now you're able to change things. You _can_ do something about it.
Evaluate your goals, ask yourself whether making this startup would be just wasted time in case it never takes off, and if you think it's still worth doing, do it.
There is always enough room for your masterpiece.3 -
I hate the entire ecosystem of dot net
I just got assigned to a project that uses dot net tech stack.

now I'm learning what dot net has to offer, and well
everything is just crapy as hell, It's the shittest learning experience in my professional carrier. I dun wanna get into the specifics, I'm sure you guys had enough.

I have a dev job and I earn good. More than enough at this age when I'm single.
My brother lost his business and has been sitting idle for more than 3 months now. Family gets cash but brother has nothing to do. He's into business and I don't even know what's going on in his life. 2021 was really rough, saw friends going over the deep end with burnout, significant incidents to handle and a shitty manager to deal with.
It wasn't about blood and tears, it was about commuting 4 hours/day mid-pandemic to be present in the office and respond to an incident whilst having to deal with a bunch of heroes thinking they were part of a CSI: Cyber episode.
All of that just to be said that my raise "would be enough to keep me from looking elsewhere" as my manager said they were very happy with my performance.
This week I found out exactly how much this appreciation is worth: 2%. And I should consider myself lucky with this number as my performance wasn't good enough to grant me any raise whatsoever.

However pathetic it may sound, I haven't. I've made good acquaitances, yes. But friends...
Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -

I'm so done with all the covid talk.
Its all that's ever talked about and you don't get a break.
As if it wasn't bad enough to have that one friend who constantly has to remind everyone how politically educated he is, and how much he hates the neo[whatever the fuck], now he has to remind everyone about his opinions on the vaccine.
No one fucking asked, shut the fuck up.
Your opinions do not matter.3 -
Features of any software product development: there is a catastrophic lack of time to get rid of bugs, but always enough time to make them even more. 🤦♂️

I hate web dev because I know enough to know how it "should" be done, know that it's not done that way, but also don't know enough to do it that way quickly.
Or why I spent the last 2 days scripting deployment of a website that costs 9$ a year to run, when I couldn't find a deployment script anywhere else.3 -
Am going through documents and found an old review on a paper I wrote in semester 1. Now, I wouldn't say my paper was either good or bad. There was not enough guidance provided in the unit and I was unfamiliar to the scientific asshole community so I tried my best.
But in particular, fuck reviewer 2. He doesn't understand basics in English and he has the audacity to make judgement. Like, I am not "misspelling" you moronic asshole who doesn't even know the difference between American and English spelling.
He wrote three fucking pages. This moron wrote about half the length of my paper about why my paper is shit. I hope he chokes on shit.
He goes on to why every figure was useless or wrong; How no section is related to another; How everything is either not explained enough, or explained too much. The audacity is what he suffers from throughout the review.
In conclusion, and given the contrast between reviewer 1 and 2, I'd recommend reviewer 2 goes on to fuck himself. Moronic bastard.
It's a pity that I know this will happen again in future. God this makes me so angry. Gah.6 -
Latex, can you for once be nice and not fuck up my images, please?
Can you stop pushing this image which you clearly have enough space for to the next page and leave the previous page completely empty??9 -
Macbook keyboard is shit
Especially european variant.
I want to see any person in the world that is braindead enough to think that making short left shift if favour of having abolutely useless button there is good.
This is the most stupid decision that could be ever made.
Not only the symbols used by that button are seldom used, they also are duplicated on they other keyboard keys. But shift is used all the time and must be big enough instead of that shit.9 -
Windows OS..
24Gb RAM
Is 24Gb enough, no worries, we got virtual memory too on disk haven't we, it will use that if we run out of real memory, won't it..
Well, no..
Get up to 23Gb in use, and things start to break..
Today, oh it just shut off the main video card, no biggie..
I've another 3 monitors to work with, and tidy things up before I reboot and make everything work again..
And there was me thinking, oh I won't need 48Gb, 24 will be fine..
CP/M was never like this..2 -
Waiting for the floors I just mopped to dry, and I'm still thinking about migrating and if, for example, the swiss give me a good job offer, I would most likely stick around. I don't hate to stick around Europe, but it defo doesn't have any of the elements I like. (megacity, snows, English speaking, multicultural, non-torturous migration laws)
Like, I'm at that point where I'm not making enough money and want to leave (also, gaining the freedom to leave from degree soon enough) but I absolutely hate my home place (personal reasons) but they pay a crapton better, plus I can get social security benefits.
... And I want to do a phd. 😐
Someone beat some sense into me please.13 -

...i realized i can actually pattern-match like this (as in, sequence of elements (including "whatever") instead of just head::rest in F#...
...from watching a talk about prolog.
like "wait... prolog can do this when pattern-matching? that seems very useful. i think i tried to do that in F# but it didn't work, which seems stupid... I'm gonna go try it again".
and sure enough =D
i think i really am gonna like F# if i find the time and resolve to break through how its different mode of thinking stretches my brain in ways it hasn't been stretched for a long time =D6 -
This new job has more work than I can possibly complete in a day, week, or month. Deadlines pile up and I’m thoroughly exhausted all weekend. My mind feels lethargic and dull. People around me seem to be getting stuff done and I feel like I’m making too many mistakes and holding everyone back. Not sure I can stick with this job for the long haul to retirement. But freelancing absolutely sucks because nobody wants to pay you enough to feed yourself and it doesn’t scale to a full time salary for me. I simply don’t have the mental capacity to do the equivalent of four peoples’ jobs to design, code, QA, launch, and do all the digital marketing, advertising, writing, and maintenance for enough sites to make up my salary.3
-
I told you it'll never work. If one .50BMG bullet is enough to destroy the entire tube thing, we have a deal-breaker. Not to mention large vacuum chambers are a bitch to maintain.9

What game engine would you recommend to an indie developer? The type who can't afford a fucking server to run the bloated and buggy unity editor but is actually a developer so isn't afraid of typing.
I've had enough of the improper sandboxing (will crash bc of game scripts), tempfile-based crash-unaware instance tracking (won't restart afterwards) and lack of UI scaling (seriously, that's like accessibility/retina support basics) that is the unity editor. If they had command line tools I'd use them happily.11 -
I wish I were lazy and had the guts to tell people what to do. I'd make a decent manager, taking fat paychecks for taking my risks. And risks would be minimal as I'm from the tech background and I know what is what.
Now I'm neither lazy enough [I still prefer doing things myself] nor do I have the mentality to treat others as minions.
I wish I could change that about me. I really do. Maybe someday...3 -
I finally did it! I met my goal! After 6 months and a ton of interviews I finally found a new job! Good pay, good culture and actual options for career paths!

So apparantly at the company i work at someone was able to use the remote monitoring a comptetitor set up for their automation stuff they had on the same site as we did. Apparantly they use just as shitty passwords as we do and rely on the network being secured enough by the IT guys. And since our stuff is in the same network as theirs. Well...2

If you put “up to” in front of “proposed salary”, which ofc is a very high number, I put your job offer in the trash. Just put the range or fuck off.

They write shit like we weren’t smart enough to see it.5 -
Fuck me, I lost my motivation AGAIN!
I mean, yea, this is a big project and I alone am obviously not enough workforce to do it, but I at least hoped for a prototype. And instead of writing anything like that, I end up writing all sorts of unnecessary modules and wrappers for game engine functions. Grrr.3 -

Can AI recognize fake smiles?
Context:
So, my good-for-nothing brother-in-law comes with his toddler. I'm pissed at him for reasons, but gentlemen are always polite IRL and look at each other for greetings.
His toddler has always loved me and runs towards me. But see my fake-ass smile and suddenly she is shy and nervous.
She has noticed the stealth-fake smile that fooled her mother and grandmother.
Can AI do that? are there enough markers to differentiate a fake smile from a real one? Or is it waaay to personal?
If is it trivial, can someone please make a fake-smile coach app?10 -
!dev Job hunting is so exhausting. Nowadays it's not enough to have two degrees and some certificates. No, you have to 'prove' your worth by also showing really complex, enterprise-level projects you made on GitHub. Yes, why don't you make it more difficult to find a job. lol3

Not sure if I found a red flag or a green flag…
“The candidate needs to know react well. No, using npx create-react-app is not enough!”
On a first sight one may think: “oh cool they search someone with in depth knowledge”
On a second thought, tho…
- Am I going to need to start many react projects in the role? Don’t think so.
- if I am… am I forbidden to use cra? Why? 🤔
- how is not using a bootstrapper a sign of “deep knowledge”?
Sounded interesting at first, but the more I think about it, the more I think this request is a red flag.9 -
"Hey can you make this excel report for me real quick? Here are the columns, you gotta get them from this table in the database. Shouldn't take long."
Alright, sounds easy enough wait where is the data. I have to join how many tables? What is this bullshit data? I want to strangle the guy who modeled this piece of garbage.5 -
An iterative process of "plan, do, test, improve" shouldn't leave an engineer's head. If we outsource "plan" to a manager, "test" to another blabbering idiot with a corporately purchased donut hanging off his mouth, the cycle becomes too long to actually work. Multiplied by an engineer's despair because he's obviously clever enough to see the whole picture, this is a recipe for disaster.
Throwing man-hours in there won't solve anything.5 -
How to avoid death from Covid 19 and vaccines, a hypothesis to explain my near death experience and what to expect for the future, by a concerned citizen.
The important variables at play:
My weight = 220lb, overweight by 50lb say.
My muscle mass = very low, I can lift 25lb.
My age = 50+
Blood pressure = High, but not quite high enough to need treatment, on the edge.
Diabetic condition = Not.
Now lets introduce 3 Covid 19 vaccinations.
1st, no real effects to worry us.
2nd, no real effects to worry us.
3rd... bad effects..
I ponder, was the 3rd shot, maybe from a more potent batch, hadn't deteriorated in transit as much as the previous 2 ?
Did I also catch another version of Covid 19 at the same time ?
Was my fairly rare variables the result of which I now appear to have diabetic symptoms..
Has this damaged me enough that it won't just get better on its own, and my options are to, lose weight, gain muscle mass, and perhaps try a fasting diet ( Shown to work in mice.. ) in an effort to regrow my insulin-producing cells ?
So for those of you out there like me, suggestions:
Lose weight.
Gain muscle mass.
Self isolate 4 weeks before vaccine, and 4 weeks afterwards.
Try to be at the back of the queue for vaccines so yours has aged a bit and isn't quite so potent.
Thoughts ?45 -

5 years of leetcode with no progress. I'm giving up.
First some background, I have an undergraduate degree in computer science and one and a half years of professional coding experience which ended when I got fired for performance issues. I have worked diligently at Leetcode for those 5 years (exceptions occurred when I got ill). I have been personally coached by a google software engineer for months. I have done and given 100s of mock interviews and paid for some to be done by professionals. I have spent 100s if not thousands of hours on Leetcoding and algorithms trying to improve in any way I can imagine. I'm still not good enough.
This all came to a head yesterday when someone on Leetcode made a post about being able to solve every single Leetcode problem in a year within a year while managing a post doc degree and having almost no programming background (link at bottom of post). It made it clear that Leetcode is a game of talent not hard work. The difference between someone like her and someone like me must be noted by the programming community. The majority of people would not ever be able to accomplish that. I dedicated myself for 5 years to Leetcoding almost exclusively and still am no where near what that person has accomplished. I have put in much more work than that person and have gotten much less from it.
I believe the programming community can learn from this contrast. The culture of always trying harder and thinking success stories apply to everyone that is pervasive in programming circles is toxic. The is reality not everyone is lucky enough to be intellectually gifted to succeed and not all hard work pays off. I am proof of that and this is the type of story that needs to be shared and heard too.
I am quitting programming out of humility and recognition of my limitations. It’s ok to give up and wise to do so when you aren't good enough for something.12 -
Q: Your biggest dev career dream?
A: To finish my thesis, get a job, where I can peacefully code. And to earn enough money (does not mean rich) to just live a comfortable live without worrying about money too much.
Am I asking for too much?
Whats with you? What is your biggest career dream?6 -
Do you ever get this soul-crushing feeling inside you that says you haven't achieved enough or you don't make enough money?
For context, I've been a dev for 6 years now and make a lot more money than when I started, which was $1000 USD annually. (Third world country).
I used to think that making more money as I grew with experience would drive this feeling away but it hasn't.47 -
can't believe it but things actually have started to fall into place on their own, career-wise. feels unreal. need to work enough to afford a cottage with a cobblestone path & my life will be complete2

Must be great to be a giant fucking dumbass company raking in more than enough money, that you can't add 40-50 more characters on why your API doesn't like our call.
"Here's an API call with 3 different ways to make a call, we will show you an example for only the easiest method, AND if you get the more complex ways wrong, we'll just respond with an error code 422 with the error message "validation failed".

Probably everyone at least once had situation when they receive a meaningless screenshot with 500 page, a message "Application doesn't work fix it" and 0 info whatsoever.
Here is my tip that saved me a lot of trouble.
I display error id in the center of the screen, large enough so no matter how small and blurry the image is (yes users, send us photos of theirs displays) , It is always easy to ready it so we can start investigation without talking to those monkeys.3 -
We are not interested in your skills right now, but is it ok if we keep your details to maybe contact you in the future?

Learning Java Spring, their official documentation is a fucking mess. Can't get any useful information other than got dumped with loads of confusing terms/packages references/libraries.

I am just saying that many successful biotechs were built on shoddy Unix scripts.
We don’t have to go that far anymore, but if your programmers are swearing at you in five years about your terrible code, that’s a win! You lasted five years and grew enough to hire judgmental programmers! Congratulations!

Got a senior dev at work.
The guy is good at his job, no doubt, but his insecurity drives me up the wall.
- Constantly double checks work done by non-seniors.
- Setup a policy where only seniors can code review.
- Tells non-seniors not to give out advice as they don't know what they're talking about.
- Edits pull requests for you.
- Demands unobtainable quality for insignificant pieces of work.
- Patronising teams messages on the regular.
We're all just trying to get work done and he's always acting like we haven't got enough stripes on the badge.5 -
I will never rant enough about Windows. It is so aged. I have 6TB of storage, 2 SSD of 1To and 1 HDD of 6TB
But windows doesn’t care, it will pack everything in the same disk in this damned AppData no matter where you install your softwares, making main disk full.
Wanted to build a rather big docker image, but yeah, because I guess that the guys from Docker have other things to do than caring of a 90s OS with a fancy UI, they use an emulated ext4 file system, it filled my disk, Docker is crashing because of that, letting me no other choice than removing the emulated disk.9 -
Today, I Had this wild idea of doing a career 360 into cancer research after earning enough (money and suffering) to leave programming in some years. Can't tell how feasible that'll be, seeing as I have no degree in the field. But it's pretty surprising that none of the bright minds throughout history have given it their best shot without hacking it for good8

The person who invented powerpoint and those who use it/love it should be skinned alive.
FUCKING SHIT OF A PRODUCT.
On the other side, instead of torturing someone to death, force them to use Power point for 2 hours a day and that will be enough for the person to beg you to kill them.
Join me in this journey against power point.21 -
One of my bad dev habits is that I tend to take up too much work because a lot of devs I had to work with seemed not competent enough. It's a bad habit because I get way overworked which influences code quality and deadlines.
I have to learn to trust more in others and give up some responsibility... it's hard though.
I think a big influence on my mindset has been that I never worked in a team bigger than 4 developers and I had way more experience in web dev than the others.
I sometimes may appear as an arrogant prick, but it's not intentional.9 -
I ran out of milk halfway a chocolate milk.
With no options left, I skeptically decided to add some water.
I had half a cup of milk, added 1/4 of water. Y'know, enough to look filled, not enough to ruin it in case it goes wrong.
Microwave it.
No, freaking, difference. Loved it.
I added some more water to see how much it changes, and it's just slightly less thick and 70% milk flavour. Sure it's a change but now I know the limit.

Today I want to put an age-old question to rest. What is art and what is not? What's the difference? In art world, there is actually a consensus that was reached in the second half of 20th century.
First, the audience has no merit to decide what's art and what's not, as art has inherent characteristics. So whether a piece is art or not is left for the artist to decide.
But the artist too cannot just call anything they make art. There is just one criterion — if only the art piece itself is enough to justify its making, and the artist sees it as the only award they need for making it, it's art. Otherwise, it's not.
"But wait, that's not entirely correct, this is incomplete", you say. Well, it's in fact complete, but because our society progressed way faster than our languages, we're having a hard time to describe novel complex things with words. Language can't keep up with rising complexity.
We use "horseless carriages" instead of "cars" when we describe anything complex enough. The good explanation of how language works and why do we act like this is outlined beautifully in Benjamin Bratton's "The New Normal". A small book of forty-something pages, but I never spent that much time on every page in my life. The best book investment for me after "The Code Complete".22 -
I just want to say it annoys the shit out of me that my B.Sc. Bachelor's degree in CompSci isn't enough for (ignorant) employers.
Now I have to waste time getting certs in fad languages (even though I did projects in them in college) just so I'm 'marketable' again. Man, f*** this bs.
Ridiculous requirements nowadays!9 -
Is the CS field creating terms for the sake of creating terms?
Someone mentioned a "closure" in another post. I instinctively knew what they meant by that based upon the code I saw. I had heard the term thrown around before, but it had not yet connected in my mind. I wondered why I had not been exposed enough to care.
So I thought: What does C++ have as far as closures?
I found that C++ has lambdas. Those are definitions for function objects. They do not exist at runtime. But a closure does. The analog is you have classes. They are definitions and do not exist at runtime. But instances of classes do. So at runtime the instance is what you are working with. This is the same as lambdas vs closures in C++. The closure is the runtime counterpart. Why a separate term for what essentially is an instance? Is it because it captures data and code? As far as I know the closure is all data that gets passed around that calls a function. So it is essentially an instance of a lambda.
Another term: memoization. I have yet to see this added to any dictionary in online tools like a browser. Is the term so specific that nobody cares to add it? I mean these are tools programmers use all the time.
My guess is these terms originated a long time ago and I have just not been exposed to the contexts for these terms enough. It just seems like I feel like I have been in the field a long time. But a lot of terms seem alien to me. I also have never seen these terms used at work. Many of the devs I work with actively avoid CS specific terms to not confuse our electrical coworkers. My background started in electrical. So maybe I just didn't do enough CS in college.6 -

How did we normalize Project Managers (non-technical scumbags who literally just make excel sheets and track work items) yelling at Developers (they literally get everything done).
Imagine having PMs yelling at surgeons for not removing a tumor fast enough or something.5 -
Until today, I had assumed deploying stuff to prod would NOT be one of my responsabilities in this company. Apparently that's not the case.
Had to deploy my code and pray it didn't break anything. Why is this a big deal at all?
Well you see, there is no repository. At all. No git, no svn, not even duplicate folders. No tests, no pipeline. Just a bunch of CPanels.
Had to manually copy files and folders from the development site to the production site and partially copy a database. "Just drag and drop" were the instructions I was given.
As if using CakePHP2, PHP5 and having to parse fucking Excel files wasn't bad enough, now I have to deal with one of the worst ways to deploy code.
Fuck it, I'm switching on the looking-for-job flag on linkedin.5 -
My entire bachelor's degree studies.
I did two senior projects solo because I couldn't tolerate the absolute mediocrity of my peers to be satisfied with a C+ or B "good enough!"4 -
Today i saw someone complaining that you have to edit a config file on ubuntu to change the behaviour of the laptop when you close the lid, which in my opinion is simple enough.
But what triggered me was another argument saying that how it would be if cars will require a mechanics degree to drive them.
Well maybe then there won't be so many fucking idiots on the road blocking the traffic in almost every fucking city bigger than a peanut plantation.
I swear, people believe they deserve to use the best things without a single clue about how they work.5 -
If you ask any sane person "hey, do you want to get some disease with fever, headache and potential risk of dying?", I doubt anyone will say "yes".
But if there exist a way to prevent it with a proven efficacy from both evidence-based medicine and science, why not get it today? I'm not even talking about covid. Why people are not getting their flu shots? How's that logic works? You mean you don't want disease, but you also don't want to take any measures to prevent it?
Every time in late autumn people get cold. For a sane person, one such case with themselves is enough to say "hey, I don't want this to happen again the next autumn". Yet people do nothing.
I can't understand this.
And this is only a flu. Hepatitis will destroy your liver and potentially will destroy your whole life, so why avoid vaccination?10 -
My plan was to potato today.
... But given anxiety, might as well have a minor heart attack and a few panic attacks on the side.
Plus, second day of no proper food seems to be helping that cause greatly too.
At this rate, I'll die of dehydration first. Lol. My greatest regret is missing out on the robot's uprising. Ain't got nobody I love deeply, so at least I don't feel regrets for people I leave behind. Tiz a short meh life I've lived.
Aight. Ms NoRegrets is out.
P.S.
In case you're stupid, let me clarify: I was being a drama queen. Shall fetch water... soon, hopefully.2 -
Senior dev on our team is concerned that we are raising standards above and beyond what we need to deliver the project.
For 6m+ this project has delivered little, but what there is is full of bugs that got through testing, and no standards (coding or otherwise) in place at all.
I hate dealing with people who preach “good enough” is fine but won’t accept they aren’t even close to doing “good enough”7 -
It was making me anxious that I was the only one doing a PhD among my close friends. I actually was feeling like I'm not good enough for it, because those around me didn't feel like they're good enough for it. (ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is)
And then, one of my bestfriends went for her PhD. Her situation is complicated, so she actually didn't have much of a choice. But now I am motivated and feel like I might actually be able to do it. 🙂 Mainly because now I can at least ask someone close when I have stupid questions. 😁
It is starting to feel like less of an strange idea, and more like proper work. 😁2 -
Yesterday, the Project Manager forwarded an email from a staff member who worked on a donations campaign. Staff member was confused about a Cloudflare challenge that appeared before the user was sent to the donation page. It’s a less than 5 second JavaScript check. He thought it looked fishy.
I had to explain that it’s a security measure that’s been up for almost a month. PM knows this but left it to me to explain because ownership of the site is on me. The donations page and api gets hit by a lot of bots because it’s a public api and there are no security measures like captchas to deter the bots. I’m inheriting this website and I didn’t build it.
Staff member says other staff want to know if the Cloudflare page can be customized so it looks more legit. Um, Cloudflare is a widely known legit service. Google it.
A few thoughts pop into my head:
1. Engineering communicated to stakeholders about the Cloudflare messaging a month ago.
2. Wow, stakeholders don’t share relevant info with their staff who aren’t on these emails.
3. Woooow, stakeholders and staff don’t look at the website that often.2 -

To you, who use Windows 11. Is there at least one feature that makes you glad you switched from 10 to 11? Or maybe not necessarily glad, but it would make you appreciate the new OS? One thing that would make the upgrade worth it... I myself can not think of a single fucking thing. (Please don't say better HDR support, that's the one most often mentioned feature. Definitely not good enough reason to have a new OS)11

"Please integrate the Facebook Conversion API into our website".
Is that enough information for a dev to act on? I've been reading up on how FB's Conversion API works but the more I read the less I understand what my clients wants. Or what I am supposed to do.5 -

I'm generally new to front end development, couldn't keep up with the eco system even if I wanted to.
But what the fuck am I supposed to do when UX gives me mock ups in absolute units of pixels?
I thought best practice was for development was like vw viewport units of em units, because of the wrinkle of supporting different screen sizes and devices.
Is the general industry practice I'm supposed to use their general ratios and just get close enough? Like I don't want to dick around for diminishing returns trying to get shit pixel perfect, I don't have an eye for this shit to begin with.6 -
Question for those that worked alone with a project manager, and were you covered multiple parts, frontend, backend, mobile and you basically have good friendship with the project owner/manager but the job got bored or wanted to switch jobs because you wanted to change environment.
What was the period you informed your employer/project manager in advance about your resignation and leaving? 2 weeks, a month? more? And was it enough time for the manager to find replacement? Did you leave in good terms?3 -
Im in a tough place now. Received 1 offer from a company and on Monday afternoon I did the last tech interview with the second company.
Now by Monday I have to respond to the first offer while I dont know about the decision from the second company.
Tried to speed them up a bit with an email on Thursday afternoon by emailing the guy who interviewed me and also CCed both of the recruiters who were involved in the process. Basically told them that I have another offer but Im still interested in them and I would like to hear their decision. No answer yet.
Its sad bcs the guy from company no2 who interviewed me seemed really cool to work with and I think I did good enough to get an offer. But apparently Im not that good enough that 5 working days would be enough to respond to me with a decision given my current situation.
It sucks because now Im gonna spend the weekend wondering what should I do next.5 -
I need an opinion.
I want to learn something new. I consider myself a non-stupid person, and I am quite embarassed by the fact that the only tool I know well is Js+friends.
My options are:
- Java because money
- C/C++ because smartass
- Rust because yes
- some new shiny obscure shit like nim/zig/hare because lol
Currebtly I need money tbh. Java would seem a reasonable option, yet I'm scared by its huge ecosystem and I'm afraid that it would seriously take too long (like MANY years) to be confident enough to get a job.
Also, despite the common memes and crap, I fucking like Java.32 -
Not imposter syndrome but definitely a moment of self doubt.
Am I good enough?
Been applying for jobs and couldn't get through.
Most of my applications are in neighbouring continent and visa is the primary filter to get rejected. Thanks to COVID-19, it is even more difficult than ever.
And for those applications where I land interviews, I am being ghosted in final rounds.
Quite strange that teams don't even care to reject anymore. Just leave me hanging to assume the worst, the truth, the reality which I don't want to face.
And self doubt creeps in where I see people with average/below average capabilities and skillset are able to find better jobs.
I am not comparing myself, undermining their struggles, or playing the blame game.
All I am saying that luck plays a huge role in how things work out.
You can still fail even after doing everything right. Or am I just dumb enough to not know where I am going wrong to improve?
At this point, if I reflect on past, seems like all the offers I have got in past were purely based on luck.
I am aware that this is temporary and things shall change for good but boy, this feeling sucks.11 -
I had a tight deadline so what I did to finish the feature was to cut corners by not writing optimized code and not doing enough dev testing to ensure the feature works.
End of today, I've moved the ticket to QA.4 -
Let me tell you a story about an independent contractor who was just told the reason I don’t have enough information to build, deploy, access, or test the software I was brought on to maintain…
is that the previous developer is holding all documentation essentially “hostage” in an attempt to squeeze more payment out of the client. What the tap-dancing shit have I gotten myself in to.3 -
Corporate hackathons are bullshit. I've swore them off. There is no way I'm going to be put in additional hours for so little gain ever again.
Companies have boatloads of money, and they think they can get away giving people $100 Amazon gift cards. SERIOUSLY? You pay for execs in millions of dollars for flapping their mouths.
Make it so that you pay out at least 20k+ to winners and give people something for participating - a nice 1k bonus.
You guys have enough money.5 -
At first i was told to go to college BY PEOPLE WITH NO COLLEGE because i wouldnt be able to find a job without degree
Like a sucker i fell for it and believed in those LIES so i sacrificed my life for school
Then later i found out PEOPLE WHO FINISHED COLLEGE told me i just need knowledge in order to be hired, and turns out degree is unimportant
Like a sucker i fell for it and believed in those LIES so i studied and worked on practical projects and gained knowledge
Now when I try to get hired, they admitted that i am able to complete complex projects and i know how to solve the problems even if i see them for the first time. But they rejected me because "im not sure why the car leaks oil".
I have to understand and know what the whole framework is doing under the hood, how everything works, how dependency injection works under the hood, SOLID principles under the hood, decorators how they work under the hood etc.
So now it turns out
- sacrificing life for school is not enough
- sacrificing life for degree is not enough
- sacrificing life for learning and gaining knowledge is not enough
- now the new trend is i have to know not only how to drive a car like a professional formula F1 driver, i also have to be a mechanic and know how to fix the car if it breaks.
MATRIX IS A BIG FAT BULLSHIT AND A LIE.
I feel like they're looking for a senior developer knowledge to pay him junior developer salary
WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT?
I sacrificed 10 days of my life for their bullshit to build this project from scratch as a technical interview. They never said congrats on all the parts that were built right, but only complained about the small portion of bugs i didnt have time to fix.
ALL OF THIS FOR A SALARY OF $1500/MONTH THAT I ASKED. THATS LESS THAN 20,000$ A YEAR. THEY EITHER GAVE ME AN OPTION TO WORK FOR WAY LESS (500-600$/month) OR CALL THEM BACK IN A FEW MONTHS.
I JUST FINISHED COLLEGE AND THEY EXPECT ME TO HAVE 20 YEARS OF SENIOR DEVELOPER EXPERIENCE.
WTF IS THIS SLAVERY BULLSHIT?
HAVING A 500$/MONTH AS ENGINEERING SALARY WITH A DEGREE IS BELITTLING OF THIS JOB.
NO I DONT LIVE IN INDIA I LIVE IN SERBIA. MY DOG IS SICK AND IT COSTS 100$ A DAY JUST FOR HIS TREATMENT. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE WITH A SLAVE SALARY IN THIS ECONOMIC CRISIS.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND2 -
@zlice I am going to ...subtweet you? (Screenshot included)
Basically, so much what you said. 100%.
You stumble your way around different companies until you find something that sits right with you.
There are so many contributing factors to the "good company" and as many definitions as everyone will value different aspects of work. Good management? Tech stack to your liking? Kick ass colleagues? Interesting product? Good work life balance? Company contributing to world's welfare?
I can go on. Each of you will decide what is good, good enough, or decent and what sacrifices and tradeoffs are acceptable.2 -
Thanks I hate it, I hate the fact that typescript will still transpile this. Not an exact copy of the code I'm working with, but close enough. Also this code targets es3, but we generate tsconfigs that say es5 (which don't actually get used) which leads me to believe that we generate them soley for the benefit of ides, and because if they said es3 the ide would show even more errors7

The thing with youtube videos and online programming courses is that they don't show you the production way of doing stuff, this is one of the reasons why new developers think they aren't good enough or that they just don't know what they're doing. If I someday become an educator, when I'm teaching I'll be sure to make my students know how to build solid production applications and not some lousy side project that can't even handle considerable traffic.3

I've had a lot of jobs, and they've all employed some form of single sign-on. But all of them have required enough individual logins for various services that I had to maintain a full category for that employer in my keepass. Until now.
This company has, by far, the most comprehensive SSO I have ever seen. Perhaps it should not be surprising that it works so well, as it is 100% made in-house. But for a company of this size, that's an amazing achievement. It speaks to excellent planning, it seems to me.
Anybody else ever worked for a large company that had a truly unified SSO?2 -
In my working floor there is a large bottle of water for waterstation. It usually ran out during the middle of the month. So I curious about the ran out situation, I got the answer from the housekeeper.
"The was not enough budget to allocate water bottle for our floor, we need to share all of them for the whole building. We only received 4 bottles for a half-month."
(It ran out 4 days from the beginning of the month)

Completely forgot to update what was going on with my potential role shift. Long story short, it was approved by the damagement. That’s nice.
I only have to get to a major milestone in my current giant of an IaC project and transfer enough knowledge to leave it in my current team mates’ hands. Looks like we’ll be there pretty much next week and I can switch at the start of 2023. Life’s good.1 -
The bygone clowns have started their new project. I look at the FAQ page. It's literally lies, because I know what they've done so far.
"We've had thousands of clients!" no they haven't, lie.
"We estimate approximately % of customers..." they don't have enough data to support that, lie.
Since when did marketing become lying?
God I hate this planet.7 -

[CSS]
I'd like to create a fixed aspect ratio box that remains centered in its parent such that two of its sides are always touching the parent. I know about the padding-top hack, the problem is that that won't make the box narrower if the parent isn't tall enough.
Is this even possible in CSS?
I like riddles and I don't expect a solution, but I'd like to know if it's even possible before I spend days researching.18 -

If you ever need a good example for bad API design, just use IndexedDB. While it might still be far above absolute zero, it should definitely be low enough for any practical purpose.
And as a bonus, it wouldn't actually have been needed if the SQLite status quo would just have been adopted as the standard back then. We could have a complete RDBMS with almost full SQL support in the browser... -
I got a very low power Netbook lately for basically no money.
I thought about using it for some server monitoring / server access via ssh console.
Which Linux distros would you recommend for such a use case. Tried Something like core-os and Debian(lxde) yet but wasn't very satisfied with both options. Both could not display the battery capacity and Debian didn't detect the Intel WiFi.
The Netbook has 512mb of ram which should be fine for a lightweight gui and more than enough for a ssh connection 😅
Thanks a lot for the recommendations :)12 -
Can PMs still reasonably require web apps to be compatible with Internet Explorer? Does the "you gotta to tailor to everyone’s needs" argument still stand nowadays? I ask this because I’ve been working on a client project for about two years now and last time they asked for IE compatibility was about a year ago. I’m preparing for the next time it absolutely stops functioning with IE to debunk their desire to remain stuck in the year 2003.
I know Microsoft simply isn’t supporting it anymore and are discouraging anyone from using it. I feel like it should be enough of an argument. However, often times enough isn’t enough. Anybody have any arguments or examples of why it’s a terrible idea to stick with it?12 -

tl;dr: crop-rotating projects
I have 3 concurrent projects because I can only remember how I felt about two of them, so this way when I've had enough of pygame's bullshit I can happily continue working on php without my hatred towards asp.net stopping me in any way. By the time I start hating php I will have forgotten why I hate asp and be ready to continue on that. -
Guys cover your eyes I'm gonna say two bad words inside a paragraph
Fuck JavaScript and asynchronous programming - I'm not skilled enough for this so I have to insult it periodically until I'm skilled enough to know partially more than now what the fuck I'm doing (therefore the times I use bad words when referring to js and async programming will decrease - or maybe at the increase of knowledge, my usage of bad words will augment. Only time will tell).15 -

I recently graduated and got a full time job at a startup I really like. The software team is fairly small (less than 10 people) and they are all significantly older than me (8+ years). Definitely feels weird being a young-whipper snapper
Also kind of feels like I shouldnt be here. Not enough experience to contribute effectively you know4 -
This happened during the early months of WFH in the covid pandemic. I had a paired programming video interview and my interviewer had some strange behavior. IDK if he had a weird tick, but his head kept dropping to the side like he was falling asleep and he’d jerk back up again. His eyes weren’t drooping though. It kept happening throughout the interview and I was afraid he’d fall out of his chair. I wondered if he was crashing from an all nighter or his body was shutting down in some way. It was jarring enough that I wondered if I should ask the recruiter to check on my interviewer.1

That might seem a bit random, but I started off this year with a nightmare (a literal dream) where I've fallen victim to remote code execution, because I cloned someone's git repo.
Is such a thing even possible? The closest thing I've found was this blog
https://blog.blazeinfosec.com/attac...
(and the info on it was already worrying enough), but that shouldn't have affected my dream computer.
Some details I more or less remember:
* The execution happened right after git clone
* The uri to the repo was a custom domain (no github, gitlab or anything)
* no submodules
* GNU/Linux3 -
Went on a Hackathon with two friends. They didn't do shit. This week, they told me that they only knew c#, so we should switch to that. (I use Linux so I shouldn't have accepted that) Just learned that they are going to a maths camp this week and the deadline is next Sunday. Dotnet core CANNOT PARSE FUCKING JSON. I'll rewrite it in node.js, and hope that I can type fast enough to finish in time. Fuck me, fuck my lazy friends and especially fuck Microsoft for saying that they support Linux while providing a dotnet for Linux published in 200-fucking-56

I thought the issue was mostly with people in tech. But I now believe, tech people are mostly misled to believing woke bullshit, world is all nice and clean, and made of unicorns.
I mean all these does make them smart enough to run/code the machines, be obedient mofo, but dumb enough not to ask questions.
Toughen up you mofos, harden up. Build and sell your own bullshit, than working for someone else. And being comfy and then being on the way to your death bed.

I recently graduated from university and landed a job as a junior devops engineer.
There’s so much tech stacks to learn and I’m in the process of converting a legacy CI system composed of only bash scripts to Python and I feel that 8 hours a day isn’t enough and I often feel that after working hours, I should be reviewing more so that the next day I can be more productive.
I am given tasks to do but I keep feeling the pressure that I need to prove myself.
Is this normal? I’m not used to this learning pace.3 -

The shaking animation of FilePond when an upload has failed is not "aesthetic". It just rubs the error into my face. I am already frustrated enough that the upload faaaaaaiiiled (each time when I read "failed" on a computer screen, it sounds like whining to me. Computer/Website: "I FAAAILLED😭😭😭😭😭" OH, CRY ME A _______ RIVER, YOU UTTER LOSER!!!! You are made to WORK, not to 😭F😭A😭I😭L😭. ).
FilePond is nice, but do you think your stupid "oh-so-aesthetic" shaking animation when an upload 😭😭😭FAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIILED😭😭😭 makes me happier? The red gradient at the top and the "Error during upload" text is enough. Two indicators of 😭f😭a😭i😭l😭u😭r😭e😭 already. But this shaking animation is one "straw too much on the camel's back".
Sorry for insincere language. I just had to get this off my chest unfiltered.2 -
I have a ton of nostalgia for ROBLOX, but everything seems to get broken over time. As ROBLOX updates, something changes about the way the code works. Enough to the point where things that usually work stop working. I mean, look at literally all of the old gear; Many of them are completely broken. I've seen many old, fun games completely die because the devs stopped fixing the problems the ROBLOX devs were causing by constantly revising the engine. I'm afraid to make something too big and complicated because then it'll eventually stop working, and it will be a nightmare to figure out what I need to revise.

Hi guys, this is my first post, I am currently doing an internship as a backend intern and I'm constantly anxious if I'm good enough I come from a no name college and everybody here is from a top tier college and I constantly worry that I am not on an equal footing as other interns.
Make no mistake I work hard, yet I start to feel insecure. I hope this feeling goes away when I get more experience.13 -
I have got ton of great colleagues that I have worked it and consider myself very fortunate that they were hunble and patience enough to deal with me.
Having said that, it would be evident that I have gotten some great advice too. In fact those minor comments here and there made me who I am today (a much better version of my past self).
One advice that I got from my South Korean colleague, who was based in Singapore and used to collaborate with team in Pacific time (US west coast) at odd hours uptil of 12 AM almost everyday.
When I was new, she kept telling me to get enough rest and not burn myself out. In early days I was very excited about the new stuff.
She said, 'Floyd make sure you set yourself up for a marathon and not a sprint.'
Damn! That hit me hard. Not just from a professional stand point, but also from a personal perspective, I realised that I need to slow down, enjoy the details, live those moments, and let shit go.
She is one of my favourites.3 -
Someone in the #us slack channel posted about how, if other Americas were dealing with roe v wade, they could come to the mental health channel.
I really want to respond about how Americans are a diverse group, and some are thankful for a judgement that preserves what some consider life, and to keep our diverse opinions in mind.
But I'm not going to. I'm not stupid. It's not worth starting a fight or potentially losing a job over. So I remain silent, like a coward.
I earn a lot of money, enough to ignore ideology I don't agree with, and messages that would have been considered totally inappropriate at one time.21 -
1. Having a bsc degree is not enough
2. The new standard is master degree
3. What's next a phd degree as the new standard?
4. Then what? I have to be a millionaire first so i can be hired to work a job?9 -
So much AI everywhere, I use Warp as terminal on macOS and today they introduced AI assistant and now at least if I sudo rm -rf / I can have someone to ask for help fast enough to know how bad I messed up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯9

Do you ever feel like no matter how much money you earn it just.. doesn't seem enough because you see certain people around you who earn even more? Whenever i hear my in-laws say 'oh that guy earns this much, this guy earns this much', i feel kinda low...20

usually when I don't get enough sleep, I feel sleepy, all day.
for some reason today was different.
slept for less than 4 hours
no coffee, etc

Recently helped someone with a Spark project and encountered “reactive JS” for the first and hopefully last time. Never minded using JS but happy to admit that it’s a dumpster fire design-wise…one that Spark engineers apparently decided didn’t have quite enough petrol on it.2

I tried to post a comment to someone's post and without UI feedback I get the API response in the HTTP request: "Comment not valid". This isn't enough information for me to troubleshoot what is a valid comment.4

Those of you who were fortunate enough to solve their mental health problems and anger issues, remember: the word “mompreneur” doesn't exist. It never did. It's a hoax. It was just a bad dream all along.5

Code is poetry. Customer support is rap battle
You caps locking, hell knows what trying to compensate, little arrogant person who volunteers in Wordpress plugin review team, - learn some manners how to communicate with fellow human beings.
If you don't have patience for help - quit what you are doing and spend the rest of your life not dealing with people.
At least be professional enough to have email signature, and not look like some teenager wrote us back in a bus stop.
I hope your emails gave you confidence to keep such manners in real life and someone punches you in the face this Friday.1 -
first job after uni some months in... had just about enough today at work, it should not take me a whole day to almost figure out 1 bug cause nothing is documented or the code for 1 thing is mixed with 17 other things, we have no docs, no comments, we have no requirements... boss just says what he wants and everyone goes to write code, no planning , no design, next day boss changes his mind and so on ...what a day.... getting depressed

So I was browsing the https://travis-ci.com website and was bothered by the weird gradiants, familiar layout and awkwardly timed animations (normally I only use https://app.travis-ci.com).
I navigated to all their top-level pages and paid attention to the incoherent/ sluggish design (see screenshot). So I got this feeling that it was a cheap-ass Wordpress template purchased from Themeforest and implemented by a webmaster with little to no dev-skills.
Sure enough, I checked the Wappalyzer extension and it is using Wordpress. Compare that to the old https://travis-ci.org which was custom-built on Ember and looks professional.
I'm aware of the negative PR they have generated over the past year but gave them the benefit of doubt and they have been good in their support and credit allotments, but man... that WP site looks so amateurish and marketed to the wrong target group. I don't know maybe I'll be forced to reconsider4 -

Fuck ticketing systems man.. jumped from a good job that i previously thought was going to be a deadend and jobhopped to a new one with a significant salary increase. Problem is that The stress levels increased 5x, and there’s significant rush to complete tasks that have sub optimal descriptions to put it nicely. The problem with that is that the lead doesn’t have enough time to properly write them and catching him during work hours for him to explain them is sometimes impossible. Sitting in limbo with 4-5 tickets open, all of them with high priority and stresing the fuck out.7

A good conversation must be like a mini skirt. Short enough to cover the subject, long enough to retain the interest.2 -
Just an idea...
Fuck scam calls and texts. I feel like wrapping their phone cords around their necks and beating them with the handset.
So short story long, I'm looking at developing a website that has a list of websites and endpoints for text and call subscriptions. The stupider the better. Enter the annoying phone number or email address, subscribe them to every damn service on the list, and let the fun begin.
Has anyone got any such websites they'd like included?6 -
Wouldn't say it was upsetting so much as mind-bending...
Attended an interview with a mid-size web development agency in 2017. The recruiter fed back from this agency that the interviewers didn't think I'd had enough experience of an agency environment. I'd spent six years in the industry at this point, and five and a half of those years were in agencies. The recruiter was as mystified as I was over that one. -
My first rant but wanted to get it out!
New job - simple enough I think - it's a website with a login and profile that serves videos and shows your progression and asks you questions when you finish one.
Wrong - Kubernates microservice madness - functions and cosmos instances galore!
There is a full aspnetcore stack microservice with a restful API that stores..... drum roll please - a person's gender against a profile id....

Rocket League is the most ruthless program you run on Windows 10.
It hangs sometimes, so bad that the task manager can't be put on top of the window for me to be able to kill the program.
I unplugged my earphones mid game and that action was enough to set off the atom bomb that this game is.
Tried creating a new desktop and starting Task manager there. It resulted in my laptop screen resembling a horror movie. It became so scrambled.
No other option than to force restart my laptop.2 -
I want to be able to look at a program and immediately know whether it halts. Partly because that would be proof that I cannot be a very elaborate computer program, and partly because it could be used to answer any yes/no question that I understand well enough to write a program for.13

You know what, fuck this. I want a functionality that is supported on browser versions back to 2016 of the major browsers... Besides IE, where it isn't supported.
But honestly fuck IE users, they can have invisible characters. Certainly no other people above me in the management structure will be using old computers enough to lose it, or at least the head honcho should be able to overrule, as from past experience if it works on my machine and my boss' boss' machine, my boss' machine doesn't matter.1 -
Any heuristics on using new JS/CSS features?
I thought of waiting 2 years, but I just saw an article that recommended waiting 6 months.
Another factor could be covered percentage, based on caniuse. 98%+ is the coverage of things we can all agree we can use, so is 95%+ enough for new features? 90%+ (so 1 in 10 people wouldn't get the expected experience)?5 -
Depends. If the schedule is busy enough, i try to carry on and focus on simpler, low-effort high-reward tasks so i don't stagnate.
If there is nothing getting burned in the oven i just call it the day and go out or relax with some game/show ^_^
I feel like all this "keep calm and carry on" mindset to solves crisis is just the result of bad micro-management of the society as a whole, but maybe i just get filosophical and anarhist when i'm low on motivation 🤔 -
Programming at a job to me is no longer creating something fun and valuable; it's more like figuring out why shit doesn't work, con-stant-ly.
It' s like coming in to your desk every morning, dreading the day because there's yesterday's shit to fix. "Hmm, what shall today be like? Oh yes, troubleshooting why my database model doesn't work, redesign it completely and break my mind over db details. The next day? Having to redesign my classes to implement new patterns because apparently the current design isn't good enough." Even if you work on new deliverables, that's just new problems in disguise anyway.
Pleasant? Not really.
lol.3 -
Has anyone read any research papers looking into the application of differential cryptanalysis to blockchains and mining, and if so, could you point me in the right direction?
I'm bored and looking for something interesting to read on my day off. More importantly I'm ignorant enough of the subject to entertain the possibility that there might be some possible (if not plausible) cross-pollination of ideas between the two domains. -

Where do computer fans go...
Inside... ?
No, outside !
Why.. ?
Easier to get to and regrease !
I blame SATA connectors myself, so fragile !
I just spent ages teasing old fans out of my PC without taking it apart much for fear of disturbing the cabling and breaking a connector. ( Again.. )
This involved unscrewing the PSU and moving it just enough to get the fans out of the gap between it and the case..
Now to figure out how to mount the fans outside firmly..
Suggestions welcomed !
Baling wire is probably a good thing, if I had any..27 -
Once the WebExtensions process of Firefox crashes, one must restart each extension individually.
This means one has to open the add-on manager and double-click these small toggles with the cursor. When one does not double-click fast enough, the listed extension moves from the "enabled" down to the "disabled" section, and the add-on manager lacks a search feature, (Ctrl+F just actuates the "Search addons.mozilla.org" search bar), meaning one has to manually scroll and find it.
It almost seems like it is deliberately designed to annoy users.6 -

Theory should be minimal courses, just something to think about and not something that expands through the entire curriculum as if anyone was to use it. Theory and fundamentals are enough, after that have career paths over what students want to focus on depending on a class that takes them through each different field: web development, db development, micro controller programming, os programming networking programming etc etc etc.
Basically, not :hey! here are some shitty basic programming classes, ok now let us move into calculus 1, 2, 3 etc etc. Most people come out of schools with no knowledge of what happens in the real world.3 -

We should begin refusing to work for companies who enforce using MS products. Need to buy actual desktop office license because their software doesn't accept web-edited elements? Pass.
Seeing a "are you still there" message in MS teams, or figuring out what other browser to use since you already have several MS accounts? Pass.
Azure devops and no way to expand the code during review?
Yup, pass!
Enough of this BS. People who opt for using MS software don't care about their users nor contractors' experience. We shouldn't care about those people.24 -
Is it just me that would prefer to work with Senior Engineers rather than mid level engineers?
Some mid level engineers are just pain in the ass. This one guy insist on getting perfection in all of the requirements. The problem is that if you work with software/lib for so long, you realize that most if not all software are buggy or have limitations. You can't expect everything to be perfect. Sometimes something just works/don't work and nobody knows why. Need lots of shortcuts/hacks just to make it work. I would say that 80% completion is good enough, especially since we're running out of time and manpower.
I noticed that Senior Engineers tend to be less strict. If it works then it's good enough, if we found some bugs later then we'll fix it. I like this practicality so we can tackle more important issues at hand.
I hope that I don't have to work in the same project with this guy again.2 -
is it a wrong assumption that start ups don't provide enough design problems to back end developers?4

Can I please keep my damn linux system and source repos ? sigh.
can we pleeeeasssee just jump forward with everything intact.
god knows I spent enough time messing with these things.
I doubt they're going to stop developing Fedora and boo hoo hoo so I'm using my comp more than I was the first x number of times.
you fucking people also have more fucked up diseased people running around I want nothing to do with and everythings dirty and ugly and people are more messed up and creepy and there is no reason to socialize with such people fuck off.2 -
My boss tells sets the tasks, and supervisor assigns them to the dev team. It should be as smooth as that simple sentence, but it just isn't. Boss sucks at communicating his ideas clear enough, so we're left scrambling on ourselves trying to guess and develop what he needs, and when we deliver it, boss says it's not what he asked! It's my first job as a self-taught frontend developer, but the lack of structure and clear objectives of the project got me so stressed out that I'm thinking about looking for another job.

Jsx + Components + state management + optional ssr/ssg should be enough for frontend devs. What do you think?5

How do people make well organized js backends? I've been using express for a long time for simple backends and messing about with APIs but I can't seem to organize it in a way that feels efficient enough for my standards. I'm wondering if other people with lots more experience than me have either resources or rules that help them keeps these kinda projects organized.8

In the previous company I've worked, we've had about one customer every 1-2 months that had his WorstPress website hacked.
It's a horrible CMS and there is no argument that could convince me otherwise, not even bribery.
Luckily enough for WP, it's not the worst CMS I've encountered... that award goes by far to "The CMS Of Doom™" (name changed to not dox the incompetent company that created it). Fucking bastards. -
Learn enough math to solve the problem Chat GPT (and two university math professors) have been unable to solve :(

People worried about AI replacing programmers when it was the math people software has been replacing.6 -
I really want to know the thought process behind this PMA error simply saying "Failed to import file".
It's bad enough when user-facing software hides error details to seem less threatening, but PMA is literally designed exclusively to be used by technical people, who know how to handle an error message. -
Not really an impressive one, but I think it's blasphemous enough to be mentioned:
Creating an embedded application, it was not supported to print a float using optimized libraries (understandable since they're not really supposed to be used anyways), but I was too lazy to convert clocks to a time unit by hand while running benchmarks. So I just printed the float as two integers, splitting it to one for the whole and one for the thousands. -
As if dealing with an unstable infrastructure and being unable to properly test microservices I work on Isn't enraging enough now developers at my workplace have to double as Ops too and have to configure themselves the K8s pods and containers in which our code runs. That would be ok for me if it isn't for the fact which we should do that trough company's shitty documented and totally leaky abstractions.2

Guys I am having a question for a long time....
Say you want to work while traveling. How do you handle monitors? I ideally want two big (not the small ones) monitors while working, however it's impossible to bring two monitors, one is heavy enough...
If one day some company invents some very very thin and foldable monitors I'll be very very happy.17 -
Any1 to suggest a company looking for remote developers
Nothing too big just good enough

Python
NodeJs
C#

Thank you4 -
Man, I love having a software factory. Every day something different. Today I'm developing with Laravel, and it's an honest framework. It doesn't do anything too much or anything less. Just enough.

You know when you want to log into something and your authenticator battery is flat..
No problem, just follow the online instructions about how to get it removed, except you get an error when trying that route..
Maybe we can put in another battery, since the banking ones you can just unscrew the back and pop in the new batteries..
How hard can it be..

Luckily in my case, the battery did last long enough to do that, but it wasn't just a one time thing !2 -
1. Create informative videos on YouTube about coding and grow my audience.
2. Quit my job and get one that pays better.
3. Learn NestJS/MongoDB stack good enough to finally add a new skill on my resume, hopefully resulting in a new job. -
I still enjoy developing . The part I'm finding difficult these days is that, if I'm under deadline pressure and need to work overtime; instead of being supported by my family, my wife moans and blames me for doing this job; saying I just want the money (which isn't true) and guilt trips me for not spending time with the kids. So, I get it from both sides. As if life isn't hard enough.1

It’s been a while since I have posted here but I felt like I want to rant without any thought of being judged.
I had take a break from work and it was working well for me. I had my ups and downs. I was always working on something but on the outside everyone just assumed that I did nothing.
I had other personal incidents that affected me. I started to get trigger with my environment and how much ever effort I made to make it lower it was still triggering.
For that reason I thought to pick up course in a different country and work on myself w/o these triggers existing.
Even though I have a plan to get started to work on things. There is this huge heaviness in my head that doesn’t seem to go away. It makes me doubt wether I am good enough to be a developer.
The previous two companies that I worked for keep reaching out to me to join them back but it still doesn’t feel like enough.
I think I am just scared to fail at this point.
Plus with everyone constantly asking me about the recession it’s adding up to my cloudy head.
I know this cloudy feeling is temporary but it’s this that stops me from being an optimal person and that mildly infuriates me. -
senior: it should only take 30 seconds to replace multiple display strings across our code base
well it would be nice if they'd do it then, and somehow i don't think that 30 seconds included checking your work and making sure you don't fuck up other instances of those strings (e.g. in variable names, etc)
maybe you got a clever enough regex to only hit exactly what you want :shrug:1 -

Udemy for example is stacked with courses from the one's i bought Wich is more than a few 🙂 only one is really zgood.
What is good?
As All courses i bought having all the information needed, lots of them are not interesting ,not enough hands on project etc.
Regarding user review , as my ampiric experience it's not saying much.
So asking you guys for the courses impacted you the most. Any subject will do 👍2 -

How the fuck would u be so fucking stupid enough to create a site with EPiServer/Optimizely and it’s piece of shit organization, community, developers, etc… is this some sort of fresh hell I have been banished to? I'm the only one here who cares little about hardware?
I hear people (even non IT ones) spending months in comparing computers and reading any technical spec (cache size, RAM frequency...) before buying one while I just give a glance to the main specs (CPU, RAM, GPU) and if they're decent enough and I like the price I buy, once I even bought a laptop while half drunk and I haven't regretted the purchase.2 -

You know @otokolo reminded me of a gripe of mine regarding a doomsday fallback
Why has no one taken advantage of the considerable reduction in physical space required for storage and put a copy of Linux on ROM on a motherboard loaded with compilers and an ide ? Also why are these people so weird and cyclic? Was not originally that way and I don't remember enough up front to avoid it.11 -
Screw clients man, request multiple complicated changes to the payment and authorization model for month on end, not enough time to test and no QA team and then act all surprised when we can't consider 20 possible scenarios for every code change. Suck a dick while you're at it, we have other projects and clients that value quality over money milking customers with bullshit.3

I don't understand why finding media that holds differences of personality type is supposed to mark me one way or another I didn't study psychology because I found people disinteresting.
And a decent enough story is a decent enough story.
Problem is.
In all cultures and subcultures some people are less appealing than others
Course these people are all unappealing at their core but sometimes the rather slow insidious and obvious attempts to sneak their weirdness Into storylines to make themselves seem almost pitiable or believable leads to alright productions
Where are we right now ?
A long way back it seems.
Why ? -
