My girlfriend is amazing:
After a long uphill battle trying to finish a huge open source project I started months ago. She noticed I was getting a little deflated.
So she donated a small amount to the donation page to lift my spirits.
She wanted to do it secretly but didn't know that it wasnt anonymous.

I started working in 2014. In one of my first jobs they gave me a virtual machine running Windows 2000.
I had a conversation that went more or less this way:
Me: «Why a so old OS?»
Boss: «Because we rely on an old library which has been compiled on Windows 2000»
Me: «What library is it? Who wrote it?»
Boss: «We wrote it. It belongs to our company.»
Me: «Can we try to port it on a more recent OS?»
Boss: «Oh, we've lost the source code a long time ago...»

Unit tests, integrations tests, functional tests, all passing (users even happy).
Colleague of mine approached me.
C: "I finally fixed the program"
M: "Which program?"
C: "Product X"
M: "What was wrong with it?"

C: "Yeah, we lost a few features, but it's Python!"
M: "Aren't you busy with other things?"

Today I found out my math teacher used to program in C++
I'm finally not the only programmer in school.
But she said her skills are outdated since that was a long time ago, but it's better than nothing! :D
We have alot in common. We're both bookworms, we both like to write, we're both Ravenclaw, we're both Erudite, and we both like to program.
I can safely say, I no longer despise my math teacher. I don't hate her, but I get annoyed how she's always absent right before a test.
Hopefully I can have a programming related conversation with her, assuming she didn't forget anything.15 -

At least the issue doesn't exist.. anymore.

Today I needed the scroll lock key.
I was running a super long test suite, one which puts a green dot on the screen every 500ms, so you can't scroll up. I needed to view some output of an earlier command... in other words, I needed to lock the automatic scrolling of the terminal.
That is what the scroll lock key was made for.
A momentous occasion.
Then I found out that a while ago, I used the macro function of my keyboard to rebind the that key... to close the current terminal window. 😡7 -
Got my new phone a few weeks ago, it rocks a 11000 mAh battery.
Was sceptical as for how long it'd last anyways so charged it last Sunday to see how long it will last with my usage (few hours of devRanting, loads of signalling and quite some firefoxing plus Spotify a lot):

Long ago I worked for a contractor company who took over an asp.net site from another contractor company. The client said that everything ran slow and he had already updated the hardware per the 1st contractor. We checked the db calls and things ran fine; so I said "search the solution for "sleep"", it came back with Thread.Sleep(1) in several places with comments saying it was to allow the AJAX Spinner to show on the pages.
Turns out the client asked for the spinner but the hardware was so fast the 1st contractors added sleep so the client would see the spinner.12 -

Me (1h later): Sure! Let me know more details about this new project.

A long time ago on a project far far away, I didn't realize there was a src folder, and made my changes in the build folder instead... And to makes matters worse, I asked a co-worker -- an ex-Googler -- for help with the issue I was working on.

I copy a line from one spec (to create a user) and paste it in another spec. It works just dandy in the first, and throws MySQL missing column errors in the other.
Fucking what.
This codebase is full of shit like this. Things work in one place but not another, and it’s never obvious why. Tens of thousands of gotchas and quirks. The only way I can get an answer to things like these is to either beg my boss for an explanation, which I’m sure he’s long since tired of, or spend a full day (or more) wading through several rabbit holes filled with raw sewage.
I wasted two hours today trying to get a simple fucking factory to work. And you know what? I just gave up and used the existing admin user. Yeah it’s a bad idea, but it’s fucking good enough.
They can yell if they want.

It's 21:42. I had 1 month to write a report on my internship. Day after tomorrow is submission. I'm starting now.
I deleted Facebook Inc.'s products long time ago, deleted YouTube app, removed Quora account, put filters on suggestions for Stack Exchange networks, blocked Reddit, stopped Spotify, started Trello/Wunderlist/Evernote to organise thoughts, ForestApp and StayFocusd for controlled browsing, deleted Tumblr etc. All this just to focus on the report and get it done as soon as possible.
Now I FOUND devRant! What the fuck world! Why!? I'm now ranting about issue on devRant with this rant. <- this sentence is a meta, if you didn't realise.9 -
A long time ago I went to my first web developer interview intending to bluff my way in. A friend working there told me that they used (the infamous) Dreamweaver. So, in the interview, when they asked me what did I used to develop, with all the confidence I could gather I said: "Windriver".
Got the job 'cause the dude (interviewer) knew less than me.

I realized this week that my CPU is almost 12 years old!
It's an AMD FX-8150 8core @3.6 (recently overclocked to 4ghz). It's still a good chip for my needs, but eep. I had no idea I bought it that long ago.
I really want to replace it, but that would require a new mobo, too. which I suppose wouldn't be a bad thing...

AMD was comparable to (and occasionally better than) Intel before, but now? Ever since they bought ATI, they've just spiraled: virtually everything they've produced has lagged behind.
However: the Ryzen seems to break this trend, so maybe there's hope yet?10 -
Hired three months ago.
Trying to implement a feature the heads were long waiting to have. It involves a part of codebase so messy and complex that even senior devs were afraid to touch.
Made a prototype, finalized related stuff, merged to develop. Got praises at the demo meeting.

Back in my sysadmin days we had an IT zoo to look after. And I mean it... Linux side was allright, but unix.... Most unices were no longer supported. Some of their vendors' companies were already long gone.
There was a distant corner in our estate known to like 2 people only, both have left the company long ago. And one server in that corner went down. It took 2 days to find any info about the device. And connecting to it looked like:

I never understood the appeal of Steve Jobs to other people, and had never bought an Apple product until about six years ago.
However, after buying a couple of Macbooks - including ones, circa 2012/2013, on eBay - it's very obvious that the quality has shrivelled into oblivion after his passing.
If I was to credit him with one thing, Jobs was the ultimate QA guru with long lasting products as his top priority.
Now, Apple sells glue machines and Steve Jobs would be clean slating the entire list of employees - from the top, down - if he was alive to notice how little the company seemed to care about what he had planted as the seed, many years ago.20 -
I was working with a guy 3 years ago, he was junior web developer. Lazy for work, watching YouTube and game streamers all day long at the office. Sometimes i was fixing his crappy code.
And ... one week ago I was surprised seeing this guy come to my current work office as senior web developer.
Im also new at this office and i had good impression i was working with professionals before this happened. Guess what... This guy hasnt changed much. Still writes crappy code , no idea of clean code at all.

Sooo I've been working on an ancient php 5.6 project that did not have any documentation and was a homemade "framework" created 7 years ago. The original creator is long gone and no one else knows a lot about this project.
When I first looked into it I almost immediately noticed the security flaws...

My trusty old Nexus 5 had a broken microphone for a long time (only worked on speaker phone) and a couple of weeks ago the display died as well. Yesterday, I decided that I can't afford a new one so I took it apart. After a while I had successfully repaired both the microphone and display with small pieces of tissue paper. I guess anything is possible when you're a stubborn problem solver!9

After i read about Arch Linux for the first time here about a few weeks ago, i thought i'd give Antergos a try on my Laptop which i use solely for working. Found out that Matlab is supported, so i don't even need a VM.
First time having a Linux distro. Still feels a bit odd for being a Win only user for a long time, but i love the look and with every hour it gets easier. :)

Programming helped me realise, that I'm growing.
Since I've learned git long time ago, all my projects are archived and I can get back to them. When I look at my old code, I can see, how much I've learned, and how much more of a developer I've become.
And it motivates me to keep going.4 -
Currently I'm working on 3D game engine and making a 3D minesweeper game with it.
I have started creating a compiler not long ago using my own implementation (no Lex no tools nothing just raw algorithms application) to hopefully some day I will be able to make a language that works on top of glsl inside my game engine. I have compilers design class this semester which haven't even started yet and made a lexical analyser generator. I also have another class about geographical information systems which I will be using my engine to create some demos for some 3D rendering techniques like level of details or maybe create something similar to arcgis which we will be using.
Oh man I have many stuff I want to do.

Finally I want to mention that I months ago saw someone here at devrant making a voronoi diagrams variant of this which inspired me to make this.

I'm nearly crying today. 1 and half year ago I started my own business (gaming and android app dev company). Today I own an office and hired another person to help me. Why it took me 1,5 goddamn year to realize that working alone from my bedroom on 4-5 projects at the same time is not healthy nor productive in the long run? It seems that this shit took some self growth to realize that I can actually trust other human beings.7

Some years ago our company site was hosted by a prick who knew nothing and started to pretend the server got a virus or whatever.
I tested their server and figured out they did not have any firewall policies going on like mitigation of ssh brute force.
It was at this time I learned about SYN flood, and boy I flooded that port 80 of them.
The company site went down for as long as I wanted.
It was great because now we manage it in house and never had a problem anymore. -

I have to accomplish some knowledge during the training period or the company won't let me stay, when I told the coworker that is sitting beside me, he told me don't worry, as long as you want this job, we will help you learn everything in order to get what you want. -
At my previous employer my boss asked me how long a project would take. Told him about a week maybe two. He then informed me it was due that day. Apparently the client gave it to him months ago. I worked a 35 hour weekend to make it happen. Then he complained that my weekly time sheet was higher than normal. He didn't think it was accurate and underpaid me. So glad I got out of agency work.6

A while ago I found one of my old notes. It was from around two years ago. I had written down my programming long term goals and what I wanted to learn (more like a wishlist). While I was reading it, I realised that throughout these two years, without me being actually aware, I had learned all of it. It had been a slow progress but eventually not only had I reached it, but I had also surpassed it. It made me feel pretty good about myself. 😊

A long time ago in an office far away, my cube mate and one of my reports got into a fist fight. My cube mate got fired over that. Messed up everyone’s entire week.
A couple months later, 9/11 happened and we all had to evacuate the city. -
I had my last day today, after signing an severance package deal some weeks ago. It has been eight long years in this news media company as a sole web developer.
Leaving it behind feels awesome.
There was cake. There was a greeting written with a marker on the cardboard box the cake was delivered in. There were no speeches.
But my by now X coworkers seemed happy to get cake.
I am so excited to start fresh next year as a developer in a small design firm where there is a lot of care and love and nerdiness.1 -

Long time ago i was moving to linux, had troubles with realtek kernel module and a friend of me told me to use "sudo rm -rf /*" and when i got it was not too late, half of my files was gone2

Long time ago had a really painful client. Everyone had an attempt at training the said client. However, the client just didn't get the system at all and kept asking lots of questions.
It got to the point where one poor developer had to make a set of screencasts of him using the system and performing basic operations.
I recall how absolutely insane it was that in addition to the hours of trading time we had provided we were sending him links to video files we'd created.
It was literally face palms all around and so bad it was sort of funny.2 -

I just wanted to shutdown a laptop to replace the SSD and a wifi card. Prepared everything, clicked on the [start] and there were only "Update and *" options. Wha the hell I thought, I could spare a few minutes. It's just a software update - should not take long!
Little did I know...
That was 45 minutes ago and It's still shutting down. And I'm just sitting with that screwdrived in my hand, looking at that blue screen and waiting. I feel stupid
UPDATE: I gave up. Long-pressed the POWER button. que sera, sera, right?
Lights go out. I press POWER again to boot it back up (forgot to save smth else). And it boots up back to the "SHUTTING fucking DOWN" AGAIN!!!

The story of how I stumbled onto devrant:
Not long ago I was struggling with visual studio and did not know what to think, do or say. The only thing I wanted to do was scream while I banged my laptop against the wall. Just before doing that I googled "fuck Vs fuck Microsoft" and I was introduced to devrant. Something about reading the rqnts of frustrated developers made me calm (It also made me laugh). So what I really want to say is: thank you devrant for saving my money.3 -

I've been so motivated like I was pretty much never. I learned C#. I've completed my projects that sat around for way to long.

Years ago we hired a new employee in our department, her first week was kind of slow, she had training materials to get through but otherwise didn't have much newby work for her. I noticed she was missing one day, she wasn't at her desk or in the area training, I found her hiding behind a door playing a video game and texting on her phone. She didn't last long there. She should have asked for something to do, or asked what she could be doing, instead of sneaking off and playing on her phone.3

Many years ago I was told by a senior dev that caching is one of the hardest things I'll ever come across. At the time I didn't know what he meant, but these past few days I'm starting to understand what he meant. It's not using the cache itself, it's the cache management that is hard. Determining what needs to be cached, when a cache should be invalidated, how long should something be cached etc. It's pretty insane when you start having to compare it with the requirements.1

The person in charge of the it department freaked out and thought some kind of a massive virus infected everything.

The best part about being a junior developer is meeting veteran developers.
For example, my friend's father is an old world Linux guru. I've known him for a really long time, but never understood why he lived in a mansion.
Every time I see him now I make a point to bring up some small Linux thought. He always responds with some ridiculous history lesson about the origin of a command or how he still uses a regex alias he wrote 15 years ago.2 -
So not too long ago I made a rant about this time I told my superiors of a problem and it got shot down because "We don't want to save developer time".
I warned them that the CPU was going to reach it's limit because the issue involves exponential growth on CPU usage the more we develop.
As it turned out, despite my thoughts that we wouldn't reach that limit for over a year, a new development led to it blowing up in their face today.
I am now treated as the expert on the topic and they're rushing to plan my suggested implementation in the next release.
I'm mildly amused.5 -

I made a New Year's Resolution to take more of an interest in my Internet privacy. Feel like it's something I should have done a long time ago. I've stopped using Google search (DuckDuckGo instead), moved away from my Gmail account (Tutanota instead) and stopped using Chrome (Firefox/Firefox Focus instead). I've had my Gmail account since they first announced it and you could only sign up if someone invited you. It felt good to delete 7000 emails and what I estimate must have been 13-14 years of Google/YouTube searches. Currently experimenting with VPNs, considering paying for ProtonVPN soon.9

Biggest regret is not what I have done, but what I haven't. A long long time ago, in the early 90s, I had a great idea for a game, but somehow I never made it come true. A few years later, Maxis launched a game very similar to my idea, and it was called The Sims.4

Doing browser detection the wrong way, probably dictated by Google marketing policy: any Chromium browser is supported by Google Docs - unless the user agent string contains the "Vivaldi" keyword.
"Issues" like this made the Vivaldi team remove their brand from their default user agent string long ago, effectively hiding the browser's market share in stats, as it will be counted as Google Chrome adding to Chrome's market share.10 -

computers are really expensive around here, so I've been using the same laptop for 6 years. a couple months ago it perished (rip).
me and my bf got all new parts and made a reasonably priced pc. it's been the first in a really long time that i enjoyed using a computer lol. it's a huge difference in my mindset knowing things won't take 3 min to load and that it won't crash every 2 secs11 -
When i was younger, lesser experienced and more naive than now; i got away with a lot of things. By lot of things i mean security flaws in my applications and overall architecture. I realise now i could've so easily been pawned.
Not that i claim to be totally secure even now, or would ever. It is a process, slow and painful one - Learning.
What i wish to point out is the role of favorable probability (non believers would call it luck). Security is so much about it. You get away with so many things for so long. And bang one day the roll of dice is unfavorable. On such rare occasions, just look back and wonder - damn i should've been breached long ago.2 -

I started to learn this language for fun two days ago and so far I find it absolutely amazing and really different to OOP languages. Most of the time the solutions make so much sense, but actually coding them requires really abstract thinking of the problem. How fast did you learn Haskell? How long it took you do code it comfortably? Any advises you can give me? I work mainly through a uni exercise sheet from a friend from a different uni, and the rest is hoogle and google :P10 -

My friend that I worked with long ago just dug it out of a drawer and sent me a photo so we could remember the days when trying to figure out why Mavis couldn't get on the network anymore could be resolved by our faithful friend "TRLFLTWKW". I miss you buddy. You made life so much better.

It took me way too long to understood what I wrote few weeks ago. After looking at the code for few minutes and looking at my db structure, I finally realized. I also instantly remembered that I wrote that "user is shown as ad" comment hoping I will not confuse myself in future. Apparently I failed.
Temporarily added next line of comment to help the future me.
Deep down I know that I should change function name itself to become clearer, more meaningful and easier to understand.
But writing that comment, making those screenshots, combining the 2 images in Pinta and writing this rant is faster than thinking the new name.

Last I had friends was in my first uni years. Long, long ago. After that - they went on their path and I - on mine. Work, family, personal projects and sometimes moto rides - that's my life now. Not really much time for friends. Not really much time to make any. Not enough time in a day to think/worry about it, not to mention reconsider my priorities/choices.5 -

A question here reminded me of how websites were made long ago. Frames! Remember those little jewels? <frameset> and <iframe>, I still remember them. Man, even then it felt terribly wrong to use them. I remember using them to create web pages with header and side bar.
The only alternative was using <tables>, which, well, we know how they ended up. Frames today have been silently forgotten, but tables have been loudly hated for many years!
Ahhh, those were the times. So much has happened since then.

So, I got an iFixIt toolkit with a gift card from xmas. Was excited to tear into my iPhone6 given that it had lasted me a long time, and not that long ago, I had the screen repaired given I didn't know how to at the time and was working stupid long hours. I haven't used the phone in about 6 months now.
Wtf.
I open the device, and immediately 2 screws and a bracket fall out of the device. The inside is filthy, and appears to have corrosion (despite the fact I've never gotten water on it, I was kinda anal with that phone).
Whoever the guy was who "fixed" my screen apparently did so in a way that involved spilling something on my phone, over torquing a screw, breaking a bracket, and the entire thing looks sketch.
All while charging over $100. I can see why he insisted on having an otterbox on the phone now, he fucked up and was worried the one screw pin wouldn't hold the screen on. Motherfucking asshole.1 -

to make a long story short, i wanted a wrapper for a api (https://esi.evetech.net), but there were none that were updated or actively maintained, so i built my own. the first version had all the non-authed endpoints, and 2 days ago i finally got all the authed endpoints, plus added in features like a config file (for storing the token and project name) :D

Went from designing new creative solutions and finding challenging problems to working on small stupid tasks and obeying a fucking idiotic company culture, that is nothing but words that are not applied in reality. Just got my laptop back from the store, after having sent it in over 6 weeks ago due to a faulty keyboard. I had made a system image of the hard drive before I sent it in, so I could just restore it and have it ready to go. So I get the backup restoring, and at around 75%, the laptop died. I forgot to plug it in.
I am now currently downloading windows. This is going to be a long night.3 -
Since I've started writing in clojurescript a 1.5 yrs ago, I can barely look at JavaScript.
I started to realise how ugly it is.
Seriously waiting to the day browsers will work with clojurescript out of the box, without the need to compile.
The language is so clean, clear, easy and data oriented, I find it hard to go back to js.
Also, the docs are much better.

Boooooy symfony has changed a lot since laaaaaaaaast time I used it a long time ago.
Some days ago I finished a little project I built using express and mongo. I want to port it into symfony to see how the newest version (which is 4) fares and I must say. I am really impressed and happy with what I am seeing :D
This sucks because I am going to be dying to use this at work and I know that I am not going to be able to use it unless i act all sneaky and shit4 -

Two years in, even the marketing department, who are all using iMacs for digital media creation, inbound marketing, and website development, and alsohave more common sense than the lowly Excel minions, are still blocked from using Dropbox.

Ran into a problem, that I recalled also having a few years ago. Couldn't recall how I fixed it, but remembered that I struggled finding a solution back then. Got a good forumhit on Google straight away this time, exact same problem. It had one reply, by the initial poster a few days later, saying he found the solution and posting how he fixed it. Great! Love that some people actually post the solution when they find it themselves! Tried registering to post a big "thank you!", but got an "email already registered"-error. Hmm... Were able to login, then realized that the poster was...me, 3 years ago! So I guess "thank me!", then...?

I'm no longer qualified for my old job despite being more experienced and still learning. -
Not too long ago during the 90s we only had 33 or 56k modems and the internet worked fine. Nowadays when the data tariff is depleted for the rest of the month and there is only a laughable 64k left speedwise NOTHING in this fucking shit internet loads anymore. I don't wanna watch YouTube. Hey guys, i joined a new company a week ago. In the offer letter they mentioned the working hours from 9:30pm to 6:30pm but today an HR told me to be online till 7:30pm. I refused. Guys i really cant sit for so long in front of the computer. 9:30 to 6:30 is a good time, but i cant sit for more than that. Also after 6:30 i meet my friends everyday. I dont know what to say to them the next time they ask me to sit for so long. If they want employees to sit for so long then why dont they mention it on offer letter?8

I'm really pissed. The kitchen builder doesn't trust my measurements, which is fine. Appointment with their specialist was an hour ago. Architect is on vacation and it was discussed last week that we can enter the construction side and the kitchen. No builder wanted to open the door for us! Even after talking to them. Long time ago I worked with a few developers on some relatively simple web project. We were using php and smarty and we used svn for versioning. At one point some dude joined the project as a php developer (with a few years of experience).
After a few days without any commits, we found out that he doesn't know what a SVN is or how to use it. After he learned how to use it we found out in our repo bunch of files with a following naming scheme:

Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)
In retrospective not a big deal, but it made me really happy for the rest of the day when I saw that address in pmap :)1 -

I am working on a script that is supposed to rename some files in sub folders of the current folder.
I used ChatGPT to help me out with the last part of finding all sub folders. Copied the code into VS code. Changed the path from “/path/to/folder/“ to just “/“, ran the code. It took a bit too long time to finish. Then VS Code asked for permissions to my reminders… “Why?” I asked before I realized that I confused “.” With “/“ for current folder…3 -

A big part of my frustration as a programmer is that I don't have a lot of friends that are on a similar level that are willing to let me bounce ideas off of them. The last few years I've been flying blind with no external frame of reference except for the few really beginner dev friends that I have.
Where do you people socialize? IRC has long been... well, kinda dead compared to how it was 15 years ago or before. I have ideas that I'd love to discuss with others in the same sphere of interests but simply cannot find them.

Helped a colleague today with finding the reason why everything was lowercase after a release. Turns out another colleague made a SQL upgrade script two months ago the did REPLACE(lower(value)... Found it in 10 minutes, saved a lot of time on debugging and still got scolded for working to long on another ticket...

This story was related to me while I was in university.
So a long time ago, (in a galaxy far far away). This student was working as an intern at some tech company. He was running some queries, everything was fine. He decides that's good enough and heads for lunch.
When he comes back the query does not work. He notices the others around him start to stand up asking if anyone has a connection.
Turns out that an intern, at another building, basically deleted everything. I'm guessing they did not add this internship to their resume. -

A long time ago, I used AIDE (Android IDE) to write a simple application to output random numbers for the lottery. I test it out and head to the gas station. I pulled out my phone to generate numbers, and received something like 36892789, 3, 78921593, 5.
After hours of staring at my code, I transferred and compiled with Eclipse and the problem disappeared.4 -
Trying out Gnome 3 again just to see how things have evolved. How can something crash and freeze so often combined with strange slowness. I like GTK+ and other DE's using that, and a long time ago Gnome was a nice thing. Now it might look good in some aspect but in other aspects it is just strange how they have decided to do things and how often they change things between each release. And then, stop freezing and being so damn slow.1

Turns out that stuff you commit and remove in later commits stays in git history and is searchable.
That, kids, is why you either squash your commits or just don't put swears in your debug code.
Especially if you have literally dozens of colleagues on the same codebase.
And you work in a large organisation where this sort of thing is frowned upon.
The crime was months ago, I wonder what the statute of limitations is on that.
And yes, in the years-long history of the codebase it's JUST me that's used any of the big three.3 -

The position in the company i started working for not long ago was for a dotnet developer. But it ended being heavy sharepoint focused and mostly front end javascript (that i am not very good at, that's why i wanted backend), doing stuff like hide this button, css that input etc. Really confused now and wondering how much il learn from this job considering its my first job as a developer and that i really want to do mvc with dotnet core. 😐😐 Does this have any value or i shouldn't be so picky for a first developer job?1

I don't hate ubuntu but I really feel that deepin is what ubuntu should have been.
When I was new to the linux world (maybe I am a new still), whenever I used to ask someone about linux Os, they used to tell me to install ubuntu.
But the ui was not that appealing. Deepin is what I should have installed and I would have ditched windows long ago. I know there are many distros, maybe better than deepin but deepin looks and feels good and is easy to use. The deepin store is awesome.

I hope there's a special kind of hell for project leaders / execs that make the decision to take down the documentation for older versions of a software.
I know we should have upgraded a long time ago, but come on. I have no clue what's going on now, and not much to go on either! All the documentation links in the configurations just redirect to the project's github repo, and I sure as hell am not going to read the whole source code just to find the possible logic behind the issue!

I just finished one of my house projects this weekend, I had the initial "concept" more than a year ago, then had to look around for wood that could actually be used, as many projects it also stayed dormant for weeks, so when I had the will and time I'll would go back to it. Yeah I know it could have been done in 2 or 3 weeks probably, but I like to do those things nice and slow, as someone in a movie said: - Slow, long moves. :)
In the next days I'll write an instructable with all the steps, if anyone is interested.

Mhm my windows just went full retard on me and I was such a mastermind that before I installed win10 I installed a kali linux so that when the windows would fail to boot then and only then would kali boot up to save my arse...then again , apparently , grub dislikes windows over it so...I'm just sitting here...in my kali cave , with kali only booting when my phone is connected via usb (?) searching like mad for a usb stick...I made this whole failsafe thing so long ago I barely remember how I did it...

Sometime ago I had to debug a override to a Joomla component made by the trainne.
So the component work just fine on development but not in production. I made the transition myself so I knew the code was the same.
This is my first rant, quite long, hope you like it.
So I thought something went wrong in the database, I searched and didn't find a thing.
Then I decided to check the code... hold yourself now
The component had to support internalization ..so instead of using the proper function to see what the current language is, he made a if with the URL hard coded..

Be vary of entering commands from history (Arrow Up), especially if you did a destructive command not long ago.
Did this in a database for a game. I cleaned the clan tables not long before release. Then a short while after the release I searched for a clan related query and ended up clearing one of the tables again (ofc on autocommit). :|
So had to delete the related tables and notified people they had to claim their clan name yet again really quick.

Never had the issue on linux yet, but I'm usually vary when doing a generic destructive command (like "rm -r *"). The problem rarely happens with zsh (you can arrow up based on what you already typed) but I'm often still vary and prefix the command with a space to prevent it showing up in my history.6 -

IT WAS DREADFUL PLACE.
To give a context that company has ~80 written negative feedbacks with 12 years on the market and never exceeding 50-60 employees, while other companies I worked for with ~5k employees, more then 20 years on the market have roughly ~100 written negative feedbacks each. -

This was a few years ago in my 2nd year of college. my very first foray into web dev for a team project. long story short, I wrote over 16,000 lines of code. teammate #2 wrote barely 1,000 lines. teammate #3 wrote around 250 lines, around 200 of which I had to rewrite anyway because it was such complete trash. and yet, still, it was this class that showed me I wanted to go into web dev. A very satisfactory debugging happened to me not long ago, when I discovered that assignement in C++ and Python doesn't work exactly the same.. I never took courses in Python so I had no way of knowing. I'm a self taught programmer, so I also always feel a bit insecure about my skills.
What made it really satisfying was that when I finally googled it, it was only to confirm the "diagnosis" that I had already made. I felt like years of struggles got me somewhere, now I feel a bit less insecure about my knowledge and skills in programming. :) -

So I really liked the movie Blindspotting from this summer. I originally watched it because the two main characters (and writers) are two of my favorite rappers, but it's a great fucking movie.
The way they're doing the soundtrack for the movie is basically releasing multiple EPs (honestly not 100% sure how long it's gonna go on). And I just found out that the second EP got released like a month ago. I've been listening to it and I fucking love it.
So nothing really important, I'm just really hype for this right now. -
I took over an application that consisted of 4 MSSQL (2005 at the time) databases, hundreds of tables, thousands of stored procedures, maybe a 1/4 of them actual still being used, external links to more than 20 other databases (MSSQL, Oracle and DB2) which all ran from a single "master" stored proc that was kicked off nightly by scheduled job.
The existing documentation consisted of a single word document, about three pages long, describing how to set up the application... on the Sql Server 6 server it had been originally created on two generations ago. -

A long time ago I used to use Tresorit with free plan, they had back then. But...I stopped as I started to use GIT more and there just wasn't enough storage (5GB) in the free plan to upload photos.

I "inherited" an A+ certification book from my older brother over 10 years ago after he saw me meddling with some old computers that still used SIMM's. I still lived in my native country at the time and got my A+ certification through my high school when I moved to the US. I knew before I got the book that my career would revolve around IT.
I learned HTML and CSS right after I finished high school and started working with JS and PHP because of WordPress a year later. To this day I still help family and friends with IT related stuff, but after digging into web development I made it my main focus. I am now working on my CS degree after failing at college years ago because of laziness and procrastination. I also work at an amazing startup as a software engineer for the web. That's it in a nutshell, questions are welcome.

Probably a veery long time ago, but being able to use what you use in if(...){} for e.g. booleans like "bool(ean) isX = a == x;".
And than reusing that value in if again and so on.
Even if it sounds trivial, there was a time where it was not and "==" was only associated with "you use that in if/while only" rather than "a == b" returns a bool(ean)/int.
Same goes for other arithmetic operators and && / || ofc.6 -
I have a couple of small ones, but one that stands out is actually fairly recent.
It was an independent project, more for practice than anything, but it involved fetching daily horoscopes from an RSS feed and showing it to the user upon request. I first just made it as a command line program,using some new modules I hadn't used before, and seeing everything work smoothly and neatly printed out made me super excited.
Not too long ago I even made a proper GUI for it using Tkinter, which also works nicely. :) Nothing so far has beaten that first excitement upon finishing the command line one, though. -

I'll stay using github or gitlab as long as it's free... I use VSTS att work and have no problem using Microsoft products as long as they do what they är suposed to...
But if youre reely upset. The community edition of gitlab is free so you can host youre own instance in youre basement or in a cloud... AWS, GCP, Azure... Then you own the data.1 -

Started by viewing the source of basic sites to learn html. Told the IT director of the company I was working at that I wanted to get into programming and he handed me a ColdFusion programming book. By the 4th chapter I was full time in the IT department and subsequently the last one to leave when the doors shut on that business.

Yeah so WordPress killed me 😅 I am still learning many things, and I was making a website for someone a year and a half ago. So it was my first full WordPress project, like from the beginning to the end, including theme and plugins. And it killed my love to programming for almost a year. I didn't finish, the job is abandoned, it was a pain in the ass, writing in PHP and especially integrating with WordPress was just too painful for me.
I came back to programming a few months ago, after a year-long break, decided to learn a new language, Go. I again enjoy writing code, but I think I am unable to touch PHP again.
Ah, and it all was parallel with when my psychic problems started. So it was even harder.1 -

I have realized that I need to redefine the meaning of the word "work" in my brain to mean "anything that needs to be done regardless of whether it's fun/interesting/engaging or not".

My PC fried a couple of weeks ago, and while handling that for awhile, I had to stay in an ICU. It's been too long and I think God or whatever may he be doesn't want me ricing my distro anymore...

I just had a long talk with Character.ai; and well what can I say. Holy crappy crapping crap...
Is it perfect? No.
Is it above the comprehensive speech level that I though would be ever possible in my lifetime if I got asked about it just 1 or 2 years ago? Yes
Either that, or it is fake and provides replies from actual humans -
I started working full-time almost a year ago and I make around Rs 3.5 lakh. A $100k dollar salary in US is equivalent to around Rs 10-12 Lakh in India. Realistically speaking, How long will it take before I can to get somewhere close to that number ?3
