How not to give support..
Me: Creates ticket on support site, letting them know their webservice returns "maintenance" page.
Support: "It works on our end."
Support: *closes ticket*
Euhm.. excuse me?
Me: Creates another ticket with a screenshot and the curl response information..
Support: Sends screenshot back that it works on their end. "Maybe check your firewall"
Support: *closes ticket*
I ain't playing these games..
Me: Creates new ticket with more curl responses from 4 different servers to prove it's not "firewall" related.
Support: ..
2 days later
Me: Sends *friendly* reminder.
Support: ..
6 days later
Me: Creates ticket again saying I'm still having issues.
Support: "I'm forwarding this to our technical support"
Support: *closes ticket*
10 minutes later.
Technical Support: "Here's the manual for our integration .pdf."
Excuse me, you say what now? I KNOW HOW IT WORKS, I'VE WRITTEN THE INTEGRATION ALREADY. THE SERVICE JUST SEEMS TO BE DOWN FFS.. pls..
Me: Sends mail to their project manager who manages the clients dossier with support history and such.
Him: "I'll check it out and let you know."
1 day later.
Support: "We had some issues this and that, wasn't publically availble, works now, .."
What a nice way to waste your time..6 -
Tested on local work perfectly,
Push to production
Restart service
CPU went up to 100%, process alive but all services down.
Panic.
Try to think of what would be the cause.
With no hope, i restarted the service again.
Everything works as expected.
I still dont know what happened. :/7 -
Every time I hear a developer say "works for me", I'm gonna hide a service of mine that they use behind the VPN.
Dev: "oy mate, this server is down"
Me (with VPN connection): "sorry mate, works for me"
Dev: "but here, check this out, it's down!!"
Me: "mate, check your network connection. You must have a shitty network connection."
Dev: -_-
Me: "Maybe shitty hardware? Driver issues on your network card? 🤭"
Because you know, we sysadmins can do that too 😉26 -
We have a customer that runs an extremely strict security program, which disallows any type of outside connection to their servers.
In order to even correspond with them via email you must undergo background checks and be validated. Then you sign an NDA and another "secrecy level" contract.
Today they had a problem, I was the one assigned to fix it. I asked for a screenshot.
We already use an encrypted mail service, which runs via a special VPN that has enough layers of protection to slow down a photon to the speed of a snail.
The customer's sysadmin encrypted the screenshot and sent it to me.
I open the screenshot and....
He runs Windows 10, uses Google Chrome and has Facebook's WhatsApp desktop app flashing orange in the tray.

Worst dev team failure I've experienced?
One of several.
Around 2012, a team of devs were tasked to convert a ASPX service to WCF that had one responsibility, returning product data (description, price, availability, etc...simple stuff)
No complex searching, just pass the ID, you get the response.
I was the original developer of the ASPX service, which API was an XML request and returned an XML response. The 'powers-that-be' decided anything XML was evil and had to be purged from the planet. If this thought bubble popped up over your head "Wait a sec...doesn't WCF transmit everything via SOAP, which is XML?", yes, but in their minds SOAP wasn't XML. That's not the worst WTF of this story.
The team, 3 developers, 2 DBAs, network administrators, several web developers, worked on the conversion for about 9 months using the Waterfall method (3~5 months was mostly in meetings and very basic prototyping) and using a test-first approach (their own flavor of TDD). The 'go live' day was to occur at 3:00AM and mandatory that nearly the entire department be on-sight (including the department VP) and available to help troubleshoot any system issues.
3:00AM - Teams start their deployments
3:05AM - Thousands and thousands of errors from all kinds of sources (web exceptions, database exceptions, server exceptions, etc), site goes down, teams roll everything back.
3:30AM - The primary developer remembered he made a last minute change to a stored procedure parameter that hadn't been pushed to production, which caused a side-affect across several layers of their stack.
4:00AM - The developer found his bug, but the manager decided it would be better if everyone went home and get a fresh look at the problem at 8:00AM (yes, he expected everyone to be back in the office at 8:00AM).
About a month later, the team scheduled another 3:00AM deployment (VP was present again), confident that introducing mocking into their testing pipeline would fix any database related errors.
3:00AM - Team starts their deployments.
3:30AM - No major errors, things seem to be going well. High fives, cheers..manager tells everyone to head home.
3:35AM - Site crashes, like white page, no response from the servers kind of crash. Resetting IIS on the servers works, but only for around 10 minutes or so.
4:00AM - Team rolls back, manager is clearly pissed at this point, "Nobody is going fucking home until we figure this out!!"
6:00AM - Diagnostics found the WCF client was causing the server to run out of resources, with a mix of clogging up server bandwidth, and a sprinkle of N+1 scaling problem. Manager lets everyone go home, but be back in the office at 8:00AM to develop a plan so this *never* happens again.
About 2 months later, a 'real' development+integration environment (previously, any+all integration tests were on the developer's machine) and the team scheduled a 6:00AM deployment, but at a much, much smaller scale with just the 3 development team members.
Why? Because the manager 'froze' changes to the ASPX service, the web team still needed various enhancements, so they bypassed the service (not using the ASPX service at all) and wrote their own SQL scripts that hit the database directly and utilized AppFabric/Velocity caching to allow the site to scale. There were only a couple client application using the ASPX service that needed to be converted, so deploying at 6:00AM gave everyone a couple of hours before users got into the office. Service deployed, worked like a champ.
A week later the VP schedules a celebration for the successful migration to WCF. Pizza, cake, the works. The 3 team members received awards (and a envelope, which probably equaled some $$$) and the entire team received a custom Benchmade pocket knife to remember this project's success. Myself and several others just stared at each other, not knowing what to say.
Later, my manager pulls several of us into a conference room
Me: "What the hell? This is one of the biggest failures I've been apart of. We got rewarded for thousands and thousands of dollars of wasted time."
<others expressed the same and expletive sediments>
Mgr: "I know..I know...but that's the story we have to stick with. If the company realizes what a fucking mess this is, we could all be fired."
Me: "What?!! All of us?!"
Mgr: "Well, shit rolls downhill. Dept-Mgr-John is ready to fire anyone he felt could make him look bad, which is why I pulled you guys in here. The other sheep out there will go along with anything he says and more than happy to throw you under the bus. Keep your head down until this blows over. Say nothing."11 -
It's maddening how few people working with the internet don't know anything about the protocols that make it work. Web work, especially, I spend far too much time explaining how status codes, methods, content-types etc work, how they're used and basic fundamental shit about how to do the job of someone building internet applications and consumable services.
The following has played out at more than one company:
App: "Hey api, I need some data"
API: "200 (plain text response message, content-type application/json, 'internal server error')"
App: *blows the fuck up
*msg service team*
Me: "Getting a 200 with a plaintext response containing an internal server exception"
Team: "Yeah, what's the problem?"
Me: "...200 means success, the message suggests 500. Either way, it should be one of the error codes. We use the status code to determine how the application processes the request. What do the logs say?"
Team: "Log says that the user wasn't signed in. Can you not read the response message and make a decision?"
Me: "That status for that is 401. And no, that would require us to know every message you have verbatim, in this case, it doesn't even deserialize and causes an exception because it's not actually json."
Team: "Why 401?"
Me: "It's the code for unauthorized. It tells us to redirect the user to the sign in experience"
Team: "We can't authorize until the user signs in"
Me: *angermatopoeia* "Just, trust me. If a user isn't logged in, return 401, if they don't have permissions you send 403"
Team: *googles SO* "Internet says we can use 500"
Me: "That's server error, it says something blew up with an unhandled exception on your end. You've already established it was an auth issue in the logs."
Team: "But there's an error, why doesn't that work?"
Me: "It's generic. It's like me messaging you and saying, "your service is broken". It doesn't give us any insight into what went wrong or *how* we should attempt to troubleshoot the error or where it occurred. You already know what's wrong, so just tell me with the status code."
Team: "But it's ok, right, 500? It's an error?"
Me: "It puts all the troubleshooting responsibility on your consumer to investigate the error at every level. A precise error code could potentially prevent us from bothering you at all."
Team: "How so?"
Me: "Send 401, we know that it's a login issue, 403, something is wrong with the request, 404 we're hitting an endpoint that doesn't exist, 503 we know that the service can't be reached for some reason, 504 means the service exists, but timed out at the gateway or service. In the worst case we're able to triage who needs to be involved to solve the issue, make sense?"
Team: "Oh, sounds cool, so how do we do that?"
Me: "That's down to your technology, your team will need to implement it. Most frameworks handle it out of the box for many cases."
Team: "Ah, ok. We'll send a 500, that sound easiest"
Me: *..l.. -__- ..l..* "Ok, let's get into the other 5 problems with this situation..."
Moral of the story: If this is you: learn the protocol you're utilizing, provide metadata, and stop treating your customers like shit.21 -

Once we were going to present a web service to governmental firm. All is going well so far and my boss asks me to host the web application the day before the presentation.
I hosted it and all was good with demo production tests, but I had a bad feeling.
While it was running on our server, I also ran it locally with a reverse proxy just in case.
* Meeting starts *
* Ice broken and down to business *
"And now our developer will run the demo for you..."
* Run the demo from my laptop to double check --> 500 Internal Server Error *
Holy shit!!!
* Opens reverse proxy link on my laptop. Present demo during meeting. Demo works like a charm. *
Firm representative: "Great! Looking forward to go live."
*Our team walks out*
GM: "Good job guys"

> *Me being calm *: "Nope, we cannot it's the service provider error, there's nothing we can do"
> *MK.G*: "Alright then, switch to another ISP ASAP"
> *Me, Internal rage, a volcano erupts *: "Umm..so you want to spend more money on another hosting because this one has an outage of 48 hours?"
>*MK.G *: "Yes, because we cannot run Facebook ads, just because website is down"
>*Internal lmao*: "Alright, but by the time you purchase a new service provider and host, the website will be up and running plus since the database is down we cannot migrate"
>*MK.G*: "I don't care, just make it up and working"
>*Me chilling*: "Alright, give me few hours"

Today my manager asked me about my research into using RabbitMQ as a backup in case Azure Service Bus ever goes down.
Me: "Good. The way we designed the framework, all we have to do is drop the DLLs into the directory, update the config, and the services will start using RabbitMQ."
Mgr: "Excellent. Probably should be looking into using RabbitMQ as a permanent replacement for Azure"
Me: "What? The whole reason we moved to Azure was to eliminate the problems with having an on prem service bus. Since we've switched, there has been zero downtime."
Mgr: "That's what VP-Joe is afraid of. If Azure ever goes down, he won't know how to explain Azure to the president as to why we're not taking orders or can't ship packages."
Me: "That makes no sense. What did VP-Joe tell the president when a database goes down or a server mis-configuration?"
Mgr: "President understands internal outages, its just the whole 'cloud' thing he doesn't understand."
Me: "Um..then VP-Joe needs to explain it to him?"
Mgr: "The decision has already been made. Are you on board? Lets look at this move as a cost savings."
Me: "You mean the $10 a month? How much hardware will we need to support RabbitMQ?"
Mgr: "Yea, nobody probably thought of that."
Me: "I'm on board with whatever decision, but I'd like a little more than VP-Joe being afraid of the president."
Mgr: "I'm sure its not being afraid."
Me: "..."
Mgr: "OK, lets wait and see if VP-Joe forgets about this and moves on to something new."3 -
"I should really make better offsite backups"
"Right, this service doesn't do client side encryption"
"Oh this one doesn't have a Linux client"
"OK this one only sets up a single directory you can dump shit into"
"Wtf this one charges more than a high class escort girl"
Whatever... I'm sure my house won't burn down.15 -
Some fucker installed a keylogger on my Ubuntu laptop at home and registered it as a systemd service. From Wireshark, it's sending each keystroke to a server in France using irc. Tried accessing the server but the moron shut it down immediately. It's the last time am fucking installing code from prebuilt binaries. If I can't build it from source then fuck off your sniffing cunt. I was about to log in into a database from that machine.
UPDATE: I found the actual file sending the keystrokes but it's binary. Anyone know how I can decode a binary file?36 -
micromanager: "Quick and easy win! Please have this done in 2-3 days to start repairing your reputation"
ticket: "Scrap this gem, and implement your own external service wrapper using the new and vastly different Slack API!"
slack: "New API? Give me bearer tokens! Don't use that legacy url crap, wth"
prev dev: "Yeah idk what a bearer token is. Have the same url instead, and try writing it down so you don't forget it?"
Slack admin: "I can't give you access to the slack integration test app, even though it's for exactly this and three others have access already, including your (micro)manager."
Slack: "You can also <a>create a new slack app</a>!" -- link logs me into slack chat instead. After searching and finding a link elsewhere: doesn't let me.
Slack admin: "You want a new test slack app instead? Sure, build it the same as before so it isn't abuseable. No? Okay, plan a presentation for it and bring security along for a meeting on Friday and I'll think about it. I'm in some planning meetings until then."
asdfjkagel.
This job is endless delays, plus getting yelled at over the endless delays.
At least I can start on the code while I wait. Can't test anything for at least a week, though. =/15 -
Dev gets hold of me, says my service is down in QA. Works if he hits it locally, works via Postman, but via the QA app server it gives a 401.
I’m like, look, if it works everywhere else, there’s something wrong on your side in QA.
He insists, no, I must help him, and begins CCing all the managers telling them this system has been down for days.
So I eventually climb into his system, check the credentials they’re using in the QA environment, and sure enough, the password is wrong.6 -
more buzzword translations with a story (because the last one was pretty well liked):
"machine learning" -> an actual, smart thing, but you generally don't need any knowledge to use it as they're all libraries now
"a bitcoin" -> literally just a fucking number that everyone has
"powerful" -> it's umm… almost working (seriously i hate this word, it really has a meaning of null)
"hacking" -> watching a friend type in their facebook password with a black hoodie on, of course (courtesy of @GeaRSiX)
"cloud-based service" -> we have an extra commodore 64 and you can use it over the internet for an ever-increasing monthly fee
"analysis" -> two options: "it's not working" or "its close enough"
"stress-free workplace" -> working from home without pants
now for a short story:
a few days ago in code.org "apscp" class, we learnt about how to do "top down design" (of course, whatever works before for you was not in option in solving problems). we had to design a game, as the first "step" of "top down design," we had to identify three things we needed to do to make a game.
they were:
1. characters
2. "graphics"
3. "ai"
graphics is literally a png, but what the fuck do you expect for ai?
we have a game right? oh wait! its getting boring. let's just sprinkle some fucking artificial intelligence on it like i put salt on french fries.
this is complete bullshit.
also, one of my most hated commercials:

"iot data and ai from the cloud"
yeah please shut the fuck up

*tries to SSH into my laptop to see how that third kernel compilation attempt went*
… From my Windows box.
Windows: aah nope.
"Oh God maybe the bloody HP thing overheated again"
*takes laptop from beneath the desk indent*
… Logs in perfectly. What the hell... Maybe it's SSH service went down?
$ systemctl status sshd
> active (running)
Well.. okay. Can I log in from my phone?
*fires up Termux*
*logs in just fine*
What the fuck... Literally just now I added the laptop's ECDSA key into the WSL known_hosts by trying to log into it, so it can't be blocked by that shitty firewall (come to think of it, did I disable that featureful piece of junk yet? A NAT router * takes care of that shit just fine Redmond certified mofos).. so what is it again.. yet another one of those fucking WanBLowS features?!!
condor@desktop $ nc -vz 192.168.10.30 22
Connection to 192.168.10.30 22 port [tcp/ssh] succeeded!
ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL?!
Fucking Heisen-feature-infested piece of garbage!!! Good for gaming and that's fucking it!
Edit: (*) this assumes that your internal network doesn't have any untrusted hosts. Public networks or home networks from regular users that don't audit their hosts all the time might very well need a firewall to be present on the host itself as well.16 -
I think having the wrong job can really bring down the quality of life.
My friend has to drive two hours each way to get to and from work. That's four hours wasted commuting.. and his job is service desk agent.
What are the consequences, you ask? He never has a spare second to talk to me, he's quickly developing gray hairs and he has no time awareness.
Having the wrong job is unhealthy and results in a cascade of bad side effects.. When most of your day involves work-related things, that's just wrong. There is no Yin-Yang there. I know because my work life is somewhat balanced.12 -
Developer came to our area to rant a bit about a problem he was having with Xamarin. A particular android device was receiving a java runtime error trying to de-serialize data from a WCF contract. What he found was not to use WCF and use WebAPI (or a simple REST service that sent back/forth JSON).
When he proposed changing the service (since the data transport didn’t really matter, he could plug the assembly into a WebAPI project in less than an hour), the dev manager shot down the idea pointing him to our service standard that explicitly stated no WebAPI (it’s in bold letters).
I showed him the date on the “standard”, which was 5 years ago. We have versioning on our sharepoint server, so I also him my proposal notes on the change request document (almost two years before that) stating we should stop using WCF in favor of REST based web standards. Dev manager at the time had wrote in his comment “Will never use REST. Enterprise developers prefer RPC.”
He just about fell over laughing when I showed him this gif.

I have in my head parts of a game, I'd love to build. A top-down space colonization game. You control various spacecrafts and build spacestations etc. to expand your control.
The catch is that you have limited direct controls in-game. Most of the "gameplay" consists of having your own piece of software running somewhere, communicating with the API and controlling your colony.
Similar to Screeps, but I don't like the limitations of writing JavaScript and uploading it to the service. I'd love for the user to have free control of what language to use. They just need to be able to create a TCP socket and communicate with the API23 -
Worst hack/attack I had to deal with?
Worst, or funniest. A partnership with a Canadian company got turned upside down and our company decided to 'part ways' by simply not returning his phone calls/emails, etc. A big 'jerk move' IMO, but all I was responsible for was a web portal into our system (submitting orders, inventory, etc).
After the separation, I removed the login permissions, but the ex-partner system was set up to 'ping' our site for various updates and we were logging the failed login attempts, maybe 5 a day or so. Our network admin got tired of seeing that error in his logs and reached out to the VP (responsible for the 'break up') and requested he tell the partner their system is still trying to login and stop it. Couple of days later, we were getting random 300, 500, 1000 failed login attempts (causing automated emails to notify that there was a problem). The partner knew that we were likely getting alerted, and kept up the barage. When alerts get high enough, they are sent to the IT-VP, which gets a whole bunch of people involved.
VP-Marketing: "Why are you allowing them into our system?! Cut them off, NOW!"
Me: "I'm not letting them in, I'm stopping them, hence the login error."
VP-Marketing: "That jackass said he will keep trying to get into our system unless we pay him $10,000. Just turn those machines off!"
VP-IT : "We can't. They serve our other international partners."
<slams hand on table>
VP-Marketing: "I don't fucking believe this! How the fuck did you let this happen!?"
VP-IT: "Yes, you shouldn't have allowed the partner into our system to begin with. What are you going to do to fix this situation?"
Me: "Um, we've been testing for months already went live some time ago. I didn't know you defaulted on the contract until last week. 'Jake' is likely running a script. He'll get bored of doing that and in a couple of weeks, he'll stop. I say lets ignore him. This really a network problem, not a coding problem."
IT-MGR: "Now..now...lets not make excuses and point fingers. It's time to fix your code."
IT-VP: "I agree. We're not going to let anyone blackmail us. Make it happen."
So I figure out the partner's IP address, and hard-code the value in my service so it doesn't log the login failure (if IP = '10.50.etc and so on' major hack job). That worked for a couple of days, then (I suspect) the ISP re-assigned a new IP and the errors started up again.
After a few angry emails from the 'powers-that-be', our network admin stops by my desk.
D: "Dude, I'm sorry, I've been so busy. I just heard and I wished they had told me what was going on. I'm going to block his entire domain and send a request to the ISP to shut him down. This was my problem to fix, you should have never been involved."
After 'D' worked his mojo, the errors stopped.
Month later, 'D' gave me an update. He was still logging the traffic from the partner's system (the ISP wanted extensive logs to prove the customer was abusing their service) and like magic one day, it all stopped. ~2 weeks after the 'break up'.8 -
Every time management says "were now using SaaS product X, and they're giving a webinar so we can learn how to use their solutions to take our business to the next level!" — I can't help but associate it with Nigerian Prince scams.
The longer I'm a developer, the more I think vertical integration and inventing your own shitty wheels isn't such a bad idea.
Their generalized, overpriced seat-per-month service always boils down to "vendor lock-in, nothing can be customized or exported, integrations are a pain in the ass, and within a few months the bills will explode because of some overage fee".10 -
--- iOS-Jailbreak-AppStore "Cydia" shuts down ---
This Friday, Jay Freeman, the maintainer of the iOS-Jailbreak-AppStore "Cydia", announced that he will shut-down his services.
"Cydia" is a app store for people that jailbreaked their iPhones and allows them to buy and download apps. Apple's AppStore doesn't allow jailbreaked apps, that's the reason it was created in 2009.
Jay Freeman, also known as "Saurik", explained that he wanted to shut down the service at the end of 2018 anyways.
Now, a recent security issue, threatening the data of all users, caused that the store no longer existed with immediate effect.
In addition to the security issue, "Cydia" was said to be no more profitable.
To calm you breakers down: Previous purchases can still be downloaded!
The software itself will continue to exist, but without a back-end for payments and stuff like that. Users are still able to do payments through third-party repositories, which already happened anyway, so that lowers the impact of the shut-down.
Just like "Cydia", other services are shutting down too.
One of the three big Cydia-repositories, ModMyi, said they wont allow any new apps and archived all existing ones.
ZodTTD and MacCiti will also be discontinued.
"Bigboss" is the only repository remaining.
Jailbreaks just lost their popularity over the last years. There's still no jailbreak for iOS 11! This shows that Apple is getting better and better at preventing jailbreaks.
On the other hand, it shows that the need for jailbreaks is not quite as high anymore and therefore the developers don't spend too much energy for breaking up iOS anymore.
Did you use Cydia, or any of the other services? Write us in the comments!
Thanks for reading!

I helped a homeless man with a really bad foot condition down the stairs to get to the subway platform along with bringing down his wheelchair. Just his luck that the elevator was out of service. The man cried and said that he wished more people like me existed in the world but the world he knew was long gone from his grasp.
My problem with that situation was that people just ignored him and look disgusted at him....since when did we as humans lose faith in each other to the point that we ultimately care about differences, status, and appearance before anything else?
Such a sad fucking world we live in today and I had just learned that he used to be a programmer and worked at IBM back in the days (he had a really old decrepit badge too and we shared some programming woes before we got on separate trains).
Bless him and fuck everyone else who stood by and watched the poor man suffer. Those people are worse than shit, they are the scum of the Earth in my eyes.4 -
My department is focused solely on web development. Of course we are part of the major portion of I.T
The entire I.T department got acknowledged for a very important piece of software. That I wrote.
The ceremony in which we were being recognized did not listed MY department, no, they listed the ENTIRETY of I.T.
Thing is, if this product was not delivered, then I was told that the blame would be MINE (I am speaking as the head of my department) but apparently if it succeeded (which it did) it is to be attributed to people that were not even involved in the project.
My employees tried calming me down when I got upset, one of them stated that it was not even our department's effort, but mine alone. And yes, I was the one that developed the solution. By myself, with complete testing, staging, the whole works. Everything, developed by me. BUT my employees held the entire department down while I was behind close doors developing this solution.
I was fucking upset, more so because my director sent an email thanking the entire I.T department for this "win"
I asked him through or messaging service if he could point out to me who else was involved, since I did not know of anyone else that did absolutely anything in this process other than myself and my guys.
Maybe the output of my program was parsed by another I.T department and something happened from it, maybe the money generated by the application (obscene amounts of it btw) were used to add more to the infrastructure etc, who knows, but as far as I know, you cannot say "if this fails it is on you" just for them to later on thank people that were not involved in the project.
This is why I would gladly move on to a different field. I don't want to be patted on the back constantly, I know how fucking good I am at what I do. But if I do something amazing I do not want to see those efforts being given to someone else.
The dev world is usually a thankless industry, but if thanks are given, then I want the sole credit.
If I am winning or loosing I want the whole fucking credit and you can be any more gangstah than that.10 -
I need to make a confession about my terribly unprofessional project I made. Around two years ago I got thrown for the first time into back end development - I had to work on the project alone. As a very smart man I basically exposed our SMTP server as a nice and very flexible API.
Fortunately it was, by the design, a very short-lived project, taken down from the web completely and for good after around 2 months. I'm still happy I had more luck than brains and nobody used our server as a spam sending service in our name and I have learned a valuable and relatively cheap lesson in security this way.1 -
Worked with a European consulting company to integrate some shared business data (aka. calling a service).
VP of IT called an emergency meeting (IT managers, network admins) deeply concerned about the performance of the international web site since adding our services.
VP: “The partner’s site is much slower than ours. Only common piece that could cause that is your service.”
Me: “Um, their site is vastly different than ours. I don’t think we can compare their performance to ours.”
VP: “Performance is #1! I need your service fixed ASAP!”
Me: “OK, but what exactly is slow? How did you measure their site? The servers are in Germany”
VP: “I measured performance from my house last night.”
Me: “Did you use an application?”
VP: “<laughs> oh no, I was at home. When I opened the page, I counted one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi, then the page displayed.”
Me: “Wow…um…OK…uh…how long does our page take to load?”
VP: “Two Mississippi’s”
Me: “Um…wow…OK…wow…uh, no, we don’t measure performance like that, but I’ll work with our partners and develop a performance benchmark to determine if the shared service is behaving differently.”
VP: “Whatever it is, the service is slow. Bill, what do you think is slowing down the service?”
NetworkAdmin-Bill: “The Atlantic Ocean?”
VP got up and left the meeting.2 -
Fuck Optimizely.
Not because the software/service itself is inherently bad, or because I don't see any value in A/B testing.
It's because every company which starts using quantitative user research, stops using qualitative user research.
Suddenly it's all about being data driven.
Which means you end up with a website with bright red blinking BUY buttons, labels which tell you that you must convert to the brand cult within 30 seconds or someone else will steal away the limited supply, and email campaigns which promise free heroin with every order.
For long term brand loyalty you need a holistic, polished experience, which requires a vision based on aesthetics and gut feelings -- not hard data.
A/B testing, when used as some kind of holy grail, causes product fragmentation. There's a strong bias towards immediate conversions while long term churn is underrepresented.
The result of an A/B test is never "well, our sales increased since we started offering free heroin with every sale, but all of our clients die after 6 months so our yearly revenue is down -- so maybe we should offer free LSD instead"5 -
I resigned yesterday to focus on my business full time. After 5 years and 1 previous failed attempt to leave the company, its finally done.
My boss threw his toys out of the pram and was borderline abusive about the whole thing. "it's like a kick in the balls" "you've clearly been planning this (said in an accusatory tone)" "you've said you were leaving before which is why you have 3 months notice now (to which my response was, and that is why I am giving you 3 months notice?!)"
Along with many other comments and general angry tone.
Honestly, I couldn't sleep the night before as I was so nervous. We're a small company and to some degree, a kind of family so I didn't want to break that. The more he spoke though, the easier it got. It simply cemented by decision to leave. They made no attempt to keep me. Showed no support. No gratitude for my 5 years of service. Nothing.
Well, you will be down your only dev in 3 months so good luck, I suspect you'll need it more than I will.18 -
In a morning 'stand up'.. (SM = Scrum Master, PO = Product Owner)
SM: "Sprint item 42399 ... Did you work with Ken on getting the price service ready for deployment?"
Me: "No, I worked with Dave on the service bus queue changes. Its there in the notes"
SM: "Ha ha...no...right there...it reads working with Ken."
Me: "Those are your notes. You re-assigned the ticket to yourself yesterday."
SM: "Oh...um...you told me you were working with Ken when I asked."
Me: "I'm really sorry, I don't remember you asking or me saying anything about changes to the price service. All the documentation I have is for the service bus."
PO: "I'm so confused, Ken was pulled off another project to work on the Price service for you guys."
Me: "I never talked to Ken, I have no idea whats going on. Did you tell Ken he had to make changes to the Price service?"
SM: "No..I never...um...well....yea...this card was blocked and the service needed to be approved and deployed."
Me: "Ken's changes were for the purchasing service two weeks ago and already deployed. The card is already marked as Done"
<PO rubs his face>
PO: "Good god...do I still need to be here?"
Me:"Um...no? Sorry?"
<PO walks out>
Me: "What changes did you tell Ken to make?"
SM: "Whatever the card says...see the price service."
Me: "Scroll down...see..price related to the service bus, not price service."
SM:"Work with Dave on getting this card closed, OK?"
Good fracking grief. Your ego is so brittle and so eager to look like a boss.
I did my job, you fracking kiss ass. I'm fracking sure when you re-assigned the ticket you told my boss you "had to" because I was falling behind in the sprint.3 -
A personal memo to all developers on devRant:
* Assume every external line of code, (including every service you consume) is an unreliable crock of flaming shit. These services can and will fail in the most glorious ways. Write your code to be resilient, and ASSUME FAILURE of dependencies. Even if it's your own team writing the other service.
Heard in a meeting today: "Your team's service outage is going to cause my service to corrupt the database!"
Response I wanted to give: "No, you asshat, my service outage is a normal part of living with microservices. Your app should have been smart enough to recognize the failure."8 -
"I'm almost done, I'll just need to add tests!"
Booom! You did it, that was a nuke going off in my head.
No, you shouldn't just need to add tests. The tests should have been written from the get go! You most likely won't cover all the cases. You won't know if adding the tests will break your feature, as you had none, as you refactor your untested mess in order to make your code testable.
When reading your mess of a test case and the painful mocking process you went through, I silently cry out into the void: "Why oh why!? All of this suffering could have been avoided!"
Since most of the time, your mocking pain boils down to not understanding what your "unit" in your "unit test" should be.
So let it be said:
- If you want to build a parser for an XML file, then just write a function / class whose *only* purpose is: parse the XML file, return a value object. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.
- If you want to build a parser for an XML file, it MUST NOT: download a zip, extract that zip, merge all those files to one big file, parse that big file, talk to some other random APIs as a side-effect, and then return a value object.
Because then you suddenly have to mock away a http service and deal with zip files in your test cases.
The http util of your programming language will most likely work. Your unzip library will most likely work. So just assume it working. There are valid use cases where you want to make sure you acutally send a request and get a response, yet I am talking unit test here only.
In the scope of a class, keep the public methods to a reasonable minimum. As for each public method you shall at least create one test case. If you ever have the feeling "I want to test that private method" replace that statement in your head with: "I should extract that functionality to a new class where that method public. I then can create a unit test case a for that." That new service then becomes a dependency in your current service. Problem solved.
Also, mocking away dependencies should a simple process. If your mocking process fills half the screen, your test setup is overly complicated and your class is doing too much.
That's why I currently dig functional programming so much. When you build pure functions without side effects, unit tests are easy to write. Yet you can apply pure functions to OOP as well (to a degree). Embrace immutability.
Sidenote:
It's really not helpful that a lot of developers don't understand the difference between unit, functional acceptance, integration testing. Then they wonder why they can't test something easily, write overly complex test cases, until someone points out to them: No, in the scope of unit tests, we don't need to test our persistance layer. We just assume that it works. We should only test our businsess logic. You know: "Assuming that I get that response from the database, I expect that to happen." You don't need a test db, make a real query against that, in order to test that. (That still is a valid thing to do. Yet not in the scope of unit tests.)rant developer unit test test testing fp oop writing tests get your shit together unit testing unit tests8 -
I recently started my first job at a small place and on the first week they gave me access to the firewall server because they wanted me to implement a VPN service. It could have gone worse, the network was only down for 10 minutes.1

Long time ago, back in a day of Microsoft Office 95 and 97, I was contracted to integrate a simple API for a payment service provider.
They've sent me the spec, I read it, it was simple enough: 1. payment OK, 2. payment FAILED. Few hours later the test environment was up and happy crediting and debiting fake accounts. Then came the push to prod.
I worked with two other guys, we shut down the servers, made a backup, connected new provider. All looked perfectly fine. First customers were paying, first shops were sending their products... Until two days later it turned out the money isn't coming through even though all we are getting from the API is "1" after "1"! I shut it off. We had 7 conference calls, 2 meetings, 3 days of trying and failing. Finally, by a mere luck, I found out what's what.
You see, Microsoft, when you invent your own file format, it's really nice to make it consistent between versions... So that the punctuation made in Microsoft Word 97 that was supposed to start from "0" didn't start from "1" when you open the file in Microsoft Word 95.
Also, if you're a moron who edits documentation in Microsoft Word, at least export it to a fucking PDF before sending out. Please. -
Dear client,
Every email you send me slows me down.
So that piece of work you keep bugging me about that you want done sooner and then adding other problems on top and then asking about it everyday even though we have already discussed this, it's going to be delayed,... due to your incessant emailing!
And just because you have been busy all year and finally slowing down doesn't mean I'm slowing down!
Come on holidays to no reception or internet service!4 -
Interesting fact: Dogecoin is popular because of a Reddit bot that stole everyone's money.
DogeTipBot, a Reddit bot that was designed as a 3rd party resource for tipping Reddit users for good content was a bot that used Dogecoin as a micro-tipping service, giving many users their first crypto experience and popularizing the coin.
The creator of DogeTipBot went bankrupt, sold all of his coins, AND all of the coins of his users, and shut down the bot.
A currency born as a joke, made intentionally as backwards as possible, and popularized by a scam, is now worth $50 billion USD... now that's a meme.9 -
My ISP can suck the biggest, sweatiest pile of dicks.
First of all, our normal service is garbage (1mb down, 0.1 up).
On top of that, for some reason, the Internet access goes down for a few minutes every time the public IP changes (2-3 times a day) which is fucking annoying.
And THEY FUCKING BROUGHT FIBRE TO MY NEIGHBOUR (20 METRES DOWN THE STREET) WHO IS AN OLD COUPLE WHO HAVE 0 INTEREST IN THE INTERNET, BUT THEY REFUSE TO BRING IT TO ME.
Fucking Vodafone, get your shit together.9 -
Long but hilarious:
I was deeply concerned about how we have a single, non-paginated call to a backend service, returning hundreds of entries, which has to be enriched with constant data fetched from our db for each entry. FOR EACH ENTRY. AND FOR EACH REQUEST.
I voiced my concerns to my PM, who called me a "rage prophet" for it.
As expected, the call took 20-something seconds to complete.
Ten minutes before the CEO comes over to have a look, another dev changes his loosely-related service, and the entire super-heavy, sprawling abyss of enrichment pipeline returns in sub-second timing!!!
CEO: guys, this is too fast. You have to slow it down a bit. It doesn't seem reliable that we're able to get all this data immediately.
PM: you see, rage prophet, it all worked out in the end
Me: #$@%$&!!!!!2 -
Some websites are a disgrace to the internet and I wish there was a service that terminates them on a daily basis.
Really though, can you do some simple research about your users and see what will make their life easy?
You put the most important button of your website in a place where the I have to scroll down and looks for it. The beginning of your page has a stock picture that has no meaning or relevance to the topic of your page. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
And your button, it doesn't even look like a fucking button. It looks like a normal text, which doesn't even react to hovering. At least change the cursor to pointer so that I can understand that it's a button.
Fuck you, your button and your useless stock picture.3 -
Two years ago I started a small online business. It was not a long term investment and it literally ended up being a one man business. The idea was to provide a service to a small group of people who will benefit from my idea and to offer it to them at a very cheap price. (It being the cheapest helped its popularity a lot).
However, never once did it actually make any profit. (and i never wanted it to make a profit) I wanted it to be self sustaining business and it was.
This was a project for my University by the way, I started off in my first year because of my extensive knowledge in the particular matter, and I only sold to people on campus.
Now that its been 4 years, my batch is graduating, and so there aren't many people to spread the word about this project. It's finally the time to actually say goodbye to this project.
I leased a dedicated server two years ago, and I am finally saying goodbye to that too (can't afford to keep it live anymore). And seriously, it feels sad to shut this machine down haha, I've had so much fun playing around with the configurations (even though it was a production server).
It's clear that this downsizing will continue and I will be closing the service in the near future.4 -
5 years ago, I spent two days in a conference room championing a service oriented architecture, which we had started down the path a year before. The other guy wanted to undo what was done and take the monolith approach. Not making any progress, I walked away and decided to let him have his way. A year later I left the position and quit programming. That whole experience played a major role in the decision to just give it up.2

Hmm internet connection is down. Check isp status page...no issues. Wait 50mins on phone to get to support, where they tell me there is a known issue, reported 4 hours ago. After call check isp status page...no issues
Is AWS selling status pages as a service now?5 -
NO. FUCKIN. THANKS. LIKE GOD.
I can't use a SINGLE google service without Google trying to push its shit down my throat.

I'm having a DAY.
it's like I'm trying to "2+2=4" and hitting "unknown operator =", figure that out, get "22" back, fix that, then math service is down, redeploy math service, wait 30 minutes, that's up, get "out of numbers" exception, turns out a dependency updated and now I have to register what "2" means, fix that, FINALLY get 2+2 to evaluate, I get 5. Figure that out, get 4! 4!!! FINALLY. Push it. Get 55 on the server. Gets 4 on my machine, getting some random 55 from the server.4 -
The Cloud Of Bullshit
Every day I wake, and I think of my one true mission in life. To mock and ridicule paint huffing idiots. Something recently that drew my ire, like the hemorrhoids on my ass is this idea of 'the cloud', THE CLOUD and the buzzword lingo-bingo bullshit that providers use to hype and sell it.
For example, airtable is an amazing service. I love that I can insert just about anything into a row, create any of my own row datatypes, that it's flexible as all hell.
I love it.
And I hate that I'm essentially locked in to the cloud.
I fucking hate how if my internet goes down (thanks you pie eating inbred dipshits at comcast) I have no access.
If the company is bought, they'll shut down like all the rest , to be "relaunched at a later time" (or never).
I hate that if the company doesn't make enough money, or it's investors change their mind, woopsie, service is shut down.
I hate that the cloud is synonymous with massive data leaks and IOT-levels of stupidity in security practices.
Every time someone says "but its in the cloud! Isn't it amazing!"
I always think 1. YEAH IF IM AN INVESTOR I GET TO MILK LOW BROW FINGER PAINTING FUCKWITS EVERY MONTH like Adobe sucking the blood from infants who are still in college.
2. Why? So I can get locked into their platform, have them segment off previously free features (fucking youtube and the 'subscribe so you can continue playing audio with your screen off' bullshit), and then have fees increase month over month?
3. Why, so every four years during the presidential selection, if I piss off some fuckstick braindead lemming literally sucking his girlfriends BFs cock, they can potentially shut me out from my own data completely?
The Cloud is built on shit-colored hype sold to knob gobbling idiots, controlling idiots, profiting at the expense of idiots, and later fucking them for buyout payola. The Cloud is a Cloud of Bullshit shat out by huckster messiahs straight into the lapping mouths of fanatics worshiping slavishly like toilet drinking scum at the porcelain alter of a neon god, invisible, untouchable, and like a spigot, easily shut off without anyone noticing. And when it happens, I'll be there, shouting "WHERE IS YOUR CLOUD NOW?"
Native any day. 100% native or I don't fucking want it
None of this node.js-gone-native bullshit either with notetaking apps taking up hundreds of megabytes of ram, where everything is bootstrap or react, in a browser, in a window container, because people are so fucking incompetent we have to hold their hand WHILE they give themselves a reach around.
Native or nothing.
For my favorite notetaking app, I use Microsoft OneNote. "OH god, a heathen, quick, stick his body up on a stake!"
But hear me out. I'll be the first one in a crowd to kick bill gates in the nuts (not because I particularly hate microsoft, just because I think hes kind of a cunt).
So when I say onenote is good, I really fucking mean it. Sure they did some cunty things like 'dumbed down' the interface, and cut out some options. But you know what they can't do?
Shut down the damn service (short of a system update completely removing the whole app, which, frankly, wouldn't surprise me).
It's so god damn good it waxed my balls, cured my cancer, fixed my relationship with my father, found my long lost brother, and replaced ALL my irl notebooks.
It's so good that if it was cocaine I'd be hospitalized for overusing it.
So god damn good it didn't just replace all my notebooks, it even replaced and sped up my mockup process three to five times. Want layers?
Built in. Just drag an image on to the notebook to import instantly.
Want to rearrange layers? Right click select "send forward/back/bring to front/send to back".
Everything snaps to grid by default and is easily resizeable.
I had all the elements for a UI sliced and diced. Wanted to try a bunch of layouts. Was gonna take me two damn days.
Did it in three hours with the notebook features of onenote.
After I started using onenote, me and my bodypillow finally conceived even.
Sweet marries mammaries I just fucking jizzed. Thank you onenote.
P.s. It really did speed up my UI design, allows annotated images, highlighted text. Shit, it can even do kanban.
And all I can think is "good job microsoft making an awesome product for free, being dumb as fuck for not charging for it, and then not marketing it at ALL."
It was sheer fucking luck that I discovered it while was I was looking for vendor STD bloatware to blast off my new install.
OneNote: Worth a try even for the kick-gates-in-the-nuts fan club.
The cloud can suck my balls.18 -
TL;DR: OMFG! Push the button already!
I've been away on paternity leave for quite some time now. Today is my first day at work since the end of July.
Just a couple of days after my paternity leave started, I was contacted by one of the managers because a tracking and analytics service I had made some months earlier had halted.
Now, I did warn them that the project was fragile and was running of an old box in my office. So they shouldn't be surprized if it came to a halt every now and then.
Well, so being on my paternity leave and all I didn't want to spend time fixing it. I had a child to look after. So I told the manager that the box probably just had shut down. I think there was a power outage the day before, so I probably thought it was the cause. So he probably just had to turn it back on. I also told him the admin u/p in case he needed to restart some services.
Today, the CEO enters my office telling me to get that thing fixed. Because that manager apparently couldn't find the power button.4 -
It seems Microsoft have taken my critique of Azure last week to heart. Last week, I insinuated that perhaps hometime on Friday was an inconvenient time of day for major downtime.
This week they've rectified their previous fault, and in their great mercy have decided to take down service at the busiest time of the day on Thursday instead.2 -
I call this one the tester than knew too much.
Note: The server the tester is running on has a hard drive that is breaking down...
Tester: Remember the error I talked to you about yesterday?
Me: Yeah, what about it?
Tester: Well the server hasn't recovered yet and I haven't restarted anything...
Me: Well the application itself hasn't crashed so our monitoring application doesn't seem to notice that the service is in a bad state. The error seems only to have brought down certain threads within the application.
Tester: No, I think there is a different issue here and has nothing to do with that error, the application is still doing things.
*tails the log*
Tester: See?
Me: As I said some things are still running and are unaffected by the error.
Tester: NO! It has to be caused by the other error I had a week ago where my file got corrupted. As we said I removed the file, restarted it and it worked again, but had the same problem a day later...
Note: The problem is not related, this time the application is running out of file descriptors
Me: Well... If the problem is the same it would have complained about the file descriptors then aswell, not an I/O error.
Tester: Nope, I think you are wrong!
Me: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
For AI, in particular Deep Learning developers, practitioners, hobbyists and otherwise people interested in the field.
If you go into the Pytorch website, click on resources and scroll down you will see a link to "Deep Learning with Pytorch" by Manning publications. This will give you access to the book, a book that if memory serves me well costs about 40+ in printing and the online book format is about 29 (again, if memory serves well)
The book is currently FREE and it does not ask you for an email address, you can just tell them why you want it for and they will give you the free pdf download.
I don't know how good the book is, but have found Manning to publish really good resources.
Do with this information what you want.
And yes, I am leaving the rant tag, so that more people can see this and take advantage of the opportunity in case of being interested and not having the money to purchase the book after the promotion is done and over with. Fuck you about tags and shit.9 -
A coworker told me this a little while ago and I cringed.
"Coworker installs windows partition o n a Mac, not sure what utility he used but he's handled every IT issue, people in our company for years but googling and researching ways to do things.
Steve comes along to do a service on the Macs (apparently) and sees what my coworker did and says "get rid of that it's a security risk", coworker had a legitimate reason to use Windows, plugin for Excel only works in Windows, so Steve could have totally done checks to ensure security wasn't a risk, but he's a Mac elitist, what can you do :/, lucky coworker though gets to use a windows PC and never looked back xD."
Honestly scared of Steve doing that so called service seeing I have tons of things I need to use (source tree, Android studio, some tools to test push notifications) and just down right deleting them because of his reasons, that and the whole he does services after hours without much warning (last time it was a leave password on desk for the next "week" and Steve will come in and fix the Macs) I can't defend my argument of why I use something like Android studio (to develop the app for the company LOL) -
I fucking give up, AWS is retarded. It's the worst piece of shit retarded fucking platform ever created and every fucking engineer that touched the code should have their fingers chopped off, shoved down their throats and then be beheaded.
I can't believe that this retarded shit is the "industry standard" for deploying anything ever. Every fucking page feels and uses as if it was fucking outsourced to a different part of india everytime. The fucking pagination behaves differently in every fucking service. Half of the new services just gave up and run on their own fucking thing, because presumably their own platform just couldn't even handle it anymore and fucking CloudFormation is the fucking kingpin of this entire retarded platform. Slapping and unslapping shit together unttil it fucking get's stuck in an unresolvable state because half the fucking services need 58 unrelated permissions to perform a simple delete.
Fuck AWS, Fuck Amazon, Fuck Bezos, Fuck the Cloud and Fuck this whole "Serverless" scam. I really truly wish everyone that had anything to do with making AWS a reality just drop dead on the spot right now so that we can forget that aws ever happened.9 -
Teaching my homeschooled son about prime numbers, which of course means we need to also teach prime number determination in Python (his coding language of choice), when leads to a discussion of processing power, and a newly rented cloud server over at digital ocean, and a search of prime number search optimizations, questioning if python is the right language, more performance optimizations, crap, the metrics I added are slowing this down, so feature flags to toggle off the metrics, crap, I actually have a real job I need to get back to. Oooh, I'm up to prime numbers in two millions, and , oh, I really should run that ssh session in screen so it keeps running if I close my laptop. I could make this a service and let it run in the background. I bet there's a library for this. He's only 9. We've already talked about encryption and the need to find large prime numbers.2

Inherited a simple marketplace website that matches job seekers and hospitals in healthcare. Typically, all you need for this sort of thing is a web server, a database with search
But the precious devs decided to go micro-services in a container and db per service fashion. They ended up with over 50 docker containers with 50ish databases. It was a nightmare to scale or maintain!
With 50 database for for a simple web application that clearly needs to share data, integration testing was impossible, data loss became common, very hard to pin down, debugging was a nightmare, and also dangerous to change a service’s schema as dependencies were all tangled up.
The obvious thing was to scale down the infrastructure, so we could scale up properly, in a resource driven manner, rather than following the trend.
We made plans, but the CTO seemed worried about yet another architectural changes, so he invested in more infrastructure services, kubernetes, zipkin, prometheus etc without any idea what problems those infra services would solve.2 -

I am working on a webservice that some other consultants upstairs are set to consume.
Last week, monday, the consultants send multiple emails and one of them comes downstairs to find out why the service isn't working correcrly. My manager tells them in email that it is still being developed and won't be ready for ten business days.
However in the meantime the service has some barebones functionality that they can try out.
And wouldn't you know it, I get emails and visits every other day along the way asking why the service is down or doesn't function.
When is the service going to be down? Why isn't this working? Hey you need to fix this

This was the best hack when I was 11. My computer had a too small fan that was always on max speed, and thus really loud. To overcome this issue I wrapped a thick blanket around the entire computer case. A week later it broke down due to the obvious heating problem, and when it came back from service the repair technician just looked at me saying "Someone has had this computer fucked up intentionally, everything is melted from within. What have you done to it?!" Me being the piece of shit that I was just denied and got a brand new PC for free, nobody ever knew..

It all started when I was driving and wasn’t paying attention to the road bc I was trying to think of a solution to a coding issue when all the sudden a deer jumps in front of my car! My car is smashed and I call road service. They send someone out and as I wait I decide to do a little coding while in the middle of the woods with my laptop. I sit down and the same deer (remarkably un phased) charges me and kicks my laptop like a football. I suffered not one but two impacts from coding...4

Today’s DevOps public service announcement... don’t test your server provisioning scripts locally. Especially when this gem is in there:

Today, I was so certain that all the functionalities were implemented to handle some webhook calls from a third-party service. It's a script I wrote that has been running for 2+ years uninterrupted or without any issues.
We got some "complaints/notices" today that some "special" actions weren't registered, so I thought that the third-party service just didn't send those actions via their webhook. After some research I found a part where they explained that those actions trigger the webhook like any other action etc. So..
First thought: "okay, maybe they implemented that at a later stage" (was not the case)
Second thought: "maybe this is not what the client meant" (it was)
Third thought: "Then it should have been implemented" (it wasn't)
Okay, time to look at the code to see where this could get handled but apparently isn't. All the actions look good, nice, clean handeling etc, nicely documented code (gave the 'past-me' mentally a high-five)..
I scroll further down to that specific action and it was quiet obvious why it didn't work.. I just see an empty function with the comment:
"//TODO: maybe handle this action one day. don't know what this does atm, probably unused.. Will take a look at it next week.."
.. :D
I took my 'high-five' back..I just needed to copy-paste some other code and change 1-2 parameters..1 -
My internet provider is a real thief, they doubled the price but the quality became catastrophic, today all the day the internet was down and tye signal quality is very poor..
When I decided to change the provider, I drove to his sales service, and it appears that he changed the location. so I came back to home and I was very angry. I drove very fast and I break the speed limit, received an SMS with money fuckening charge.
great !!

I have a feature suggestion for devrant: some kind of polling system.
This idea came into my mind with the survey a few days ago.
Since almost all of us are devs, aspiring or experienced, we can expect (somewhat) professional opinions, e.g. on how to tackle a specific problem.
Maybe it's even possible to make this a paid service somehow. I thought about this:
Open a poll for all registered users: $0
Add requirements for a user to have to be able to vote on the poll: +0.99$ each:
- has ranted at least X times
- has at least X ++s
- has a StackOverflow account connected
...
This way, the OP can narrow down the target audience to a specific group.
Maybe...? I don't know if something like this already exists somewhere else.3 -
Got moved to higher prio project
- disastrous security
- Built with Knockout.js in 2016
- entire folders of business logic duplicated 3 times to allow for the business requirements of separate regional branches to evolve independently
- Application server in ASP.NET Core MVC but the *real* backend is a WCF service
- there is an outstanding ticket for a list view that fails to load because the API response exceeds the .NET serializer's maximum length. The proposed solution is to stream it down to the client which then collects it into a JS array and renders a DOM node for all 6k rows
- mgmt wants to scale up to the entire European region, not with a single installation but still with a single codebase
- the Germans want interactivity with Relay
- prod database copied around and cleaned to establish new environments, migrations lost to time
- read-only queries have a tendency to deadlock16 -
I want to switch to an encrypted email service. My question, what if the service provider suddenly decides to close down the email service.
I feel like it's too risky to move all my emails to them.5 -
Hey Spectrum! It'd be pretty wicked if you could email me or shoot me a text the next time you decide to do maintenance that will result in service outages!
It's not that hard to shoot a text that says "Hey Stuxnet! We gonna be doing some maintenance, so ya internet's probably gonna be down for a bit. We'll get that shit up and running asap tho my man."2 -
Get a "Covid-19" email from an online service I last used 4 years ago. The email boils down to 2 sentences of "we are working remotely as we have always done, there is no impact".
3 paragraphs of "here are the services we offer you should check out".
Fuck off1 -
Internet at home down.
Internet at office also down.
Two different service providers but they use the same backbone or whatever you call it shit which is broken and the repair needs hours.
And I still don't wanna rant about it.
Maybe I need to check myself with a doctor.1 -
The company I work for used to be hosted on 3dcart. One day the site went down and their support couldn't tell us why. After over 24 hours of downtime they restored service but left 5 days of all records and customizations across the entire store, from the DB to the damn templates. Their support apologized for the outage blaming the disaster on a combination of hard disk failure and a bad update to their backup script. They were not willing to assist us in any way. We were forced to manually enter 5 days of orders (which gave them new order numbers and caused more problems), products and template changes, with order data coming from an internal email which was luckily CC'd on the order confirmation email. Thank God for whoever setup that CC, it saved our asses. In the end it cost our company thousands of dollars and 3dcart never composited us in any way.2

Look here Mr Senior Tech if you don’t know 100% what you’re doing, don’t fucking touch the goddamn firewall with your fucking sausage fingers and you overblown call center team lead. I mean you need to have the confidence you would have if you were eating a banana and some one told you it was a poisonous berry, you’d laugh and eat it anyway, cause it’s obviously a banana. That’s the kind of confidence you need to have when fucking with the entire goddamn network configurations. I just went thru a 7 hour shit show because you THOUGHT you knew what you were doing. Not a damn thing was broken there. One service needed a hole in the firewall and you fucked all this beyond an easy fix. Now I’ll admit I don’t have that much confidence working with the firewall, that’s why I would fucking cal one of the companies that set it up even though we don’t necessarily have a support contract, it would have cost a lot damn less to have them work on it than for the whole company to be down and for me to have to stress over every fucking thing going (or not going) on.

I had the oppertunity to join a non profit organization to help them automate stuff instead of serving the army. One of their core applications got rewritten like a year ago from a terrible and very old Symfony stack to Laravel / React.
The guys who were in charge for the rewrite didn't really adapt the mindset of either MVC for Laravel nor the component idea behind React. There are a few controllers in the backend, but they sometimes have functions defined which would clearly belong in a model or service class. They rarely defined relationships on models, instead they're joining the tables together for the same effect. The frontend rendering mostly happens in for loops over the returned array from the API instead of breaking things down into little components. This ends in components which have sometimes over 1000 lines with super-nested logic in it.
But I did find my favorite piece of code today in of the controllers. Some many questions ...

Why do companies feel its ok to put dumb crap like this when their services go down? Shit like "oopsies" or "Oh no" doesn't make your users feel better about your shitty service.
Btw this is from Mixpanel, who I wish we hadn't chosen as our analytics platform.

I was one of the early adapters to devrant. And I qualified for my free stickers ages ago. But thanks to the useless South African postal service, I still havent received my stickers over a month down the line :( I have so much sadness in me because I NEED these stickers!4

Today,
I tried setting up XAMPP for running my friends code.. it took 5hrs and faced atleast one issue in every step from installation to running.
First
1) XAMPP Did not download itself, found that internet was down.
2) downloaded finally, installation phase went till 98% fatal error, windows collecting info for diagnosis
5)after 3 tries , suddenly it installed successfully
6)Apache force shut, every time I started it
7)1.5 hours later found VM had occupied the port 80, making it shut.
Changed the port
8)PHPmyadmin was recent ,that SQL 5.1 support was not There.
9)Now after setting up new instance of MySql 5.6 , created conflict.
Project referred one instance and PHPmyadmin referred other
10) Changed port numbers and added service entry in windows to make it work
At last the struggle ended up with happy ending.
My installation story precisely
Iam new to PHP development and XAMPP.6 -
I explained last week in great detail to a new team member of a dev team (yeah hire or fire part 2) why it is an extremely bad idea to do proactive error handling somewhere down in the stack...
Example
Controller -> Business/Application Logic -> Infrastructure Layer
(shortened)
Now in the infrastructure layer we have a cache that caches an http rest call to another service.
One should not implement retry or some other proactive error handling down in the cache / infra stack, instead propagate the error to the upper layer(s) like application / business logic.
Let them decide what's the course of action, so ...
1) no error is swallowed
2) no unintended side effects like latency spikes / hickups due to retries or similar techniques happens
3) one can actually understand what the services do - behaviour should either be configured explicitly or passed down as a programmed choice from the upper layer... Not randomly implemented in some services.
The explanation was long and I thought ... Well let's call the recruit like the Gremlin he is... Gizmo got the message.
Today Gizmo presented a new solution.
The solution was to log and swallow all exceptions and just return null everywhere.
Yay... Gizmo. You won the Oscar for bad choices TM.
Thx for not asking whether that brain fart made any sense and wasting 5 days with implementing the worst of it all.5 -
So we use SAP for this little thing.
Booking your work times in a self service. And guess what?!
That shitty piece of software cant handle such an easy task. I mean seriously what the heck?!
They load everything from the slowest server the world has ever seen.
It litterally takes 2 seconds to click a button and something happens.
I need at least 1 minute for one entry! ONE!!!!!
Not to forget to mention it is down like all the time. Hey there are more than 4 users?!
Lets burn the instance down to the ground. Yeah thanks SAP cloud. Great job!

My tech debt meltdown is happening right now. We are releasing our huge micro service based product next week with no automated testing of any sort. Our front end clients are relatively DRY. No tests and dry = can't change anything = hacks on top of hacks.
Why? Team lead won't listen to me and has beaten me down so I don't care anymore. If it's broken fuck it.2 -
Wish we can shut down every tech product and service and start all over again. All the million dollar ideas are already realized and the only thing to do is be a rich guys employee now.9

Fuck stupid managers.
My current agency tried to create a bundle of generic Microservices with the hope of save time and money on future projects. That was two years ago (i was working here from 4 months ago).
What they have now? well, a sort of distributed monolyth were if one service goes down, everything else fails, infinite technical debt, no security policies (yeah, all the apis are open!!!) Business rules on the frontend . . .
And what the stupid manager say? "Everything must be ok because i designed it very well, i research a lot for this"
Stupid boomer.
PD: Yeah, despite the fact he is judt a manager, he take the responsibility to design the full architecture, idk why no one srops him.4 -
This is irritating. Fuck you stitchfix. If I were convicted of a felony and did time, my odds of finding a job are basically zero. But for some reason (I can only surmise weaponized wokeness, or has an executives sex tape) they want to keep this fuck on who maliciously deletes half of Cisco's AWS service infra, pleads guilty and is looking at 5 years and $250k in fines.
https://theregister.com/2020/08/...
This isn't even the first time their sourcing of resources has become a problem. Deloitte nailed them just last year with an audit that said their outsourcing had led to effectively no way for them to control their financials or secure customer data. And their response is apparently, double down.

Rant about IT teacher
(This happened a few months ago)
I go to highschool and in ninth grade you learn about Excel and databases in general. In the first half of the year we learned how to use excel and in the second part of the year we learned about SQL databases.
So we learned SQL and how to set up a database using LibreOffice Base. At the end of the year we had to do one final project which was setting up a database and writing some queries.
We had to do it in groups of two and we had to choose for what we wanted to make a database.
We had like 5 minutes time to discuss it in the groups and me and my friend decided to do something like GitHub, so a database with tables for all the users, repositories, etc.
Then we had to tell our teacher what we wanted to do. Others made databases for hospitals, shops, netflix, app stores. The teacher asked the other groups, they told him what they wanted to do and he wrote it down. Here is how it went down with my group:
Teacher: So what do you want to do?
Me: A database for something like GitHub
Teacher: For what?
Me: GitHub
Teacher: what?
Me (very slowly): G I T H U B
Teacher: what is github?
Me: ...
(I was very surprised that he didn't know GitHub)
Me: well, you can upload files and work on them together with other people. There are also things like branches...
Teacher: Ah ok, so a cloud service
(I was done and wanted to end the conversation)
Me: Yes... it's a cloud service...
(Me in my mind: why do i have to be here)
We named our project 'GitGud', a little bit passiv aggresive.
Yeah so apparently my IT teacher doesn't know GitHub, however he installed Ubuntu on some of the school computers so I guess that's nice
We got an A so that's good.9 -
I am now sitting in my apartment lobby after rushing home this morning because of a FedEx Delivery.
They said they can't get access to the building then how the fuck did this FedEx package get in between when I got back and when I came down?
Now they said there are different trucks... And my service could come later today.
It wasn't even supposed to come today but I guess maybe that's good since I took today off anyway...
Now I'm just stake out here all day and if it's not here..... Im going to aim to make FedEx the next Facebook or Panama Paper PR crisis

So I quit after 10 years of service to start my own company. Never had the resources or tools to put the full documentation effort in unfortunately. Trying my best for a handover. The board have started to treat me like shit, no respect after a decade of propping these assholes up. I have offered my services post employment but they are being difficult.
Just got an email and call from our data centre... they are shutting down the site and can't relocate our boxes physically due to the ip ranges in use. Only option is to migrate the sites and code to new boxes. Which means patching of db and code for newer versions.
Do I leave them with this mess since they are being assholes or try to sort it properly in my last few weeks while I also document..3 -
Amazing how a giant cloud service like AWS can go down. It feels like the whole cloud is so fragile. All of a sudden it will rain and everything we know of will vanish.2

Last year I was asked to optimize a code in our legacy portal (yet to be replaced with the new portal). The legacy system didn't have a design phase. Straight away went to development by whatever developer available at that time.
It was seriously fucked up.
So I went and had a look at the vanilla PHP code that served data for a datatable.
** I nearly fainted **
A query was done to get data from a table without any joins.
Then for loop to display those data.
Then inside for loop, for every single column that gets data from a related table there's a fucking query.
Eg: select * from users where.... to display username. Then again select * from users where..... to display user's email, then another query for his phone number. Then another query to get service providers name, then another to get their phone number.
I think the guy who did it wrote his first hello world app with a bunch of queries and sent it to production. No one bothered to check until 4 years later when it slowed down like a friggin snail.
I'm surprised it even survived that long. -
I hate having to deal with our IT service desk. Every time it takes enormous energy to get to the right people and make them understand that no, you are not an idiot, but you actually have a technical issue.
Sure thing they do have a few competent nice folks there too I've gotten to know over time and they indeed have to deal with a ton of dumb non-tech savvy idiots on a daily basis. However, if my job title mentions "software" and "engineer" they should at least assume I'm an idiot in tech. Or something. Every single time I need to open a ticket, even for the simplest "add x to env y", I need to quadruple check that the subject line is moron-friendly because otherwise they would take every chance to respond "nah we can't do that", "that's not us", or "sry that's not allowed". And then I would need to respond, "yes you do:) your slightly more competent colleague just did this for us 2 weeks ago".
Now you might imagine this is on even another level when the problem is complex.
One of our internal apps has been failing because one of the internal APIs managed by a service desk team responds a 500 status code randomly but only when called with a specific internal account managed by another service desk team.
(when I say "managed by", that doesn't mean they maintain it, it just mean they are the only ones who would have access to change something)
Yesterday I spent over a fucking hour writing a super precise essay detailing the issue, proving a million times it's not on our end and that they need to fix it. Now here is an insight to what beautiful "IT service" our service desk provides:
1) ticket gets assigned to a "Connectivity Engineer" lady
2) few hours later she responds and asks me to give her the app and environment IDs and grant her access to those
(naturally everything in my email was ignored including these two IDs)
3) since the app needs to be in prod for the issue, I make a copy isolating the failing part and grant her access to the original "for reference" and the copy to play with
4) few hours later I get an email from the env that some guy called P made changes to the actual app, no changes to the copy
(maybe they immediately fixed the app even though I asked them to only touch the copy)
I also check the env and the live app had been shared with another 2 people giving them editing rights:)
5) another few hours pass and the lady responds that she had been chatting with P (no mention of who tf that guy is) and that P has a suggestion that might work and I should test it, "please see screen shot" for details:
These motherfuckers sent me a fucking screenshot of the env config file where "P has edited a few parameters" that might help. The screenshot had a 16 line part of the config json with a bunch of IDs and Base64 params which HE EDITED LOCALLY.
Again, because I needed a few iterations to realise what I've just witnessed:
These idiots modified some things in the main app (not the copy) for hours. Then came to the conclusion that the config needs some IDs and params updated. They downloaded the config json. Edited it locally. Did not fucking upload it back to the main or test app. Did not test it live. Did not CC in or direct the guy with changes to me. Did not send me the modified config file. Did not even paste the new IDs into the email. But TOOK A FUCKING SCREENSHOT OF THE MODIFIED FILE AND SENT THAT SHIT TO ME. And then had the audacity to ask me to test it when they had access to it and that's literally their fucking job.
I had to compare the fucking screenshot to the live config file and manually type in the changes.
And no, it still doesn't work. And Now I have to get back to them showing it still fails the same way but I just can't deal with these people. Fuck. Was hoping by the time I write it all down it'd be better, and it does feel a bit better, but I still need to get this app fixed. And I can only do it through these... monkeys. I just can't. Talking to these people drains my life energy... I'm just sad. -
So I suck at scripts, windows scripts namely. I need a script to monitor a program on machine and send an email if it goes down. There are eight instances running on the machine and they can be determined to be working if a specific port is open, one port per instance. I have no clue where to start and I thought it could be done with some existing service or script. Suggestions?10

Three days ago my focus was shifted from a development role to a support role. I was shifted to replace another support guy who had used fraud to get the position. I have no experience with this role but there was decent KT and I'm catching on fine. During onboarding and KT I'm serving as the first contact for new tickets and whatnot...
Today I got a ticket with an error on our production instance that no one had ever seen before. It prevented the guy from using our service entirely. I tried to reproduce it and... I couldn't use the service either. No one could. Everything was down. I could see the sweat building on my manager's forehead.
Thankfully another member on my team has done a bit of support before, so we collaborated with each other and other teams throughout the day to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it. I'm listening to them chat remotely as we speak - so far I've been working on it 9 hours straight.
This service is used by everyone - it's a business critical service with due dates on actions and escalations to managers... Imagine if the support ticketing service for your company crashed. That means a lot of people are asking what's wrong, requiring extensions, etc. I've been answering to managers and seniors in the business throughout the day.
The best part? We figured out why the server went down, and the reason is fantastic: someone updated the server's code without telling anyone, and all they had done was remove critical parsing code. Just took it right out, pushed, redeployed. We don't know who did it or who even has access to do that. I guess I have some detective work cut out for me after we've fixed everything that was broken by that.
I miss coding already.1 -
A random story that just popped back into my head while reading another rant:
Long ago, we developed our own webmail platform at the request of clients. After it was finished, it was never updated and eventually turned into an outdated insecure steaming pile of crap. Up until ~2015, it looked like the first iteration of AOL Mail from the 1990s (and it functioned as such too.) Years, we decided to sunset the platform, and allotted 6-months or so to transition all the active users off the platform and over to an alternative email provider. We had to call each client multiple times and send multiple emails with a deadline detailing when the service would be shut down, and we'd explain that if they didn't transition over to a new service and transfer all their emails before that date, then the emails would be lost forever. Lo and behold, a handful of clients ignored our repeated contact attempts, and we shut down their email service (as we told them that we would.) Of course, they called screaming and panicking "OUR EMAIL IS DOWN OUR EMAIL IS DOWN WE'RE LOSING MONEY FIX IT NOW!!!!," and we told them "We attempted to contact you multiple times, and you neglected to return our numerous calls or emails. We're happy to help you transition your old email addresses to this new provider, but because you neglected to follow the cushy deadline we provided you, all of your emails are gone."
Of course, they denied having ever received our calls/emails, and we'd have to provide them with our outgoing call recordings to prove that we did in fact contact them multiple times. Then they'd blame the mishap on their secretary, who would blame it on the intern, who would blame it on the IT guy, who would blame it on the janitor, and so on and so forth.
Moral of the story: always keep outgoing call recordings when you're sunsetting a product.1 -
So, I've been reading all this complaints about micro services which started to be loud thanks to the mad CEO of Twitter.
Keep reading but I am curious about your opinion as well
To me all the point of micro services has never been about improving the speed, in fact it might have a negative impact on the performances of an application. I think that given the calculation power we have nowdays, it's not a big deal
However on the other side, it makes all the rest so much easier.
When there's a problem on one service, I can just debug the given service without spending hours starting a huge slow turtle
If something goes down, it doesn't make unhealthy the whole app, and if I am lucky it's not gonna be a critical service (so very few people will be pissed).
I have documentation for each of them so it's easier to find what I am looking for.
If I have to work on that particular service, I don't have to go through thousands of tangled lines of code unrelated to each other but instead work on an isolated, one-purpose service.
Releasing takes minutes, not hours, and without risk of crashing everything.
So I understand the complaint about the fact that it's making the app run slower but all the rest is just making it easier.
Before biting my ass, I am not working at Twitter, I don't know the state of their application (which seems to be extremely complicated for an app deigned to post a bit of text and a few pictures), but in a company with skilled people, and a well designed architecture.12 -
Banned from travel
I was going to go to France this month to meet with the people of my company and have physical training and ended up finding out that I have military service when I went to renew my passport.
Since I found out I have become extremely devastated, I either have to serve for 1 year or wait 2 years after I turn 30 in order to pay a fine and be able to get out of this fucking prison, the worst thing is I had planned this trip with my manager in December and had no idea about this shit, I also contacted my friends in europe to plan a meetup and then it all went down the drain.12 -
So i was working on an android app that communicate with restfull web service. I setup everything , started the web service api at localhost and launched the app on genymotion (virtual machine android) .Nothing seems to work . I checked the code , debugged some stuff and it turns out i couldn't communicate with the api server. I tested the api on my browser and nothing is wrong ,I tried to test on the phone vm browser and voila 404 not found . How the hell it's working on my windows and not on the vm (with localhost url :/ ) .I kept debugging for more then 3 hours with no solution to be found .
The moment I realised wtf I'm doing and how stupid I was => shut down my laptop went to coffee shop and bought a lifeless dark espresso .
In case you didn't understand what the issue is, I was running the api on my windows localhost and testing it with same url on my android vm (I should've changed localhost with my machine IP )1 -
Just upgraded my internet service from a WISP, that could only get 1mb down and 1 up on a good day with lots of packet loss, (hack job company no improving infrastructure) ... for reference in live out in woods in northern Michigan.. sooo there arnt many options... DSL, don’t cross the river to me, neither does cable or fiber. Cell signal doesn’t work either as you can see.
So I had to try out satellite... went with viasat... got put on viasat-2 and holy shit first time in 4 years since living here have I been able to stream, and download and upload to my servers without having to take a nap. But the experience of dealing with what I did for 4 years definitely caused me to be more creative in what I do, and how I process data, and transmit data. Definitely an experience that taught me lot and gave me a lot of knowledge.
But now I’m in what I will consider “phase 2” there will be faster internet to come... Ariel fiber is being ran by the power company... but they are min 2 years out.. and Elon’s sats will also be next sooo good times to come..
Yeah yeah I know the ping rate sucks.. but guess what... I don’t play games so I don’t care... and as far as voip or web conferencing goes yeah there’s a slight delay/lag.. but I just tell them.. when you call me or conference with me pretend I’m not on earth.. boom the latency is explained then hahah.

Am I the only one who gets intimidated when shit its roof?
Yesterday, during crucial business hours, one of the major OMS db column type got overflowed. Caused around 30 mins downtime and then later, pool of all connections with high concurrent requests flushed down stream which caused thunder herd.
One by one.. all services went down; Fucking java service couldn't even start because of load..
This is the moment I fell in love with GoLang. We shard request using GoLang service, it just started and picked up the load beautifully..
At the end, it is around 6 millions business loss, but a good lesson learned :) -
so now they even have a name for not being an idiot...
its called a "composible" architecture as apposed to a "monolith"
what if i told you it's all the same?
(i'll even throw in a bonus and say that a "microservice" architecture is still a monolith - because you need all your damn microservices working together for the full product or service anyway!!! and thats a monolith!!!!)
wow, you've "decoupled" your frontend from your backend? with this fancy thing called an "API"? well, what the hell else was anyone doing in the past decade? ITS THE SAME THING YOU DUMBASS
god i swear its 🤡 all the way down, just inventing new words for the same thing over and over again. idiots. idiots everywhere
i'm just so happy we have "composible" architectures now ❤️ thank god for that6 -
I ended today a meeting.
Was annoyed.
Did it bastard administrator of hell style.
I shut down the necessary staging machine for presentation after disabling the network service.
Of course the machine died unexpectedly and sadly we had to postpone this important meeting.
In reality this meeting was as important as hay rolling down a street.
I hate everything at the moment.1 -
One of the projects started a year ago was to replace our tech/status dashboard. Two of our new people were even dedicated to developing it full time for 6 ~ 8 months. I found out today the entire board is gone, and it's been replaced to a link to Service Now.
Nearly a year of work, completely flushed down the tubes. Glad I wasn't on that project.2 -
Our approach is to get a loose feel for what the client wants, lift some visuals from Theme Forest then spend the next few weeks persuading the client to use our crappy server rather than their preferred AWS solution. Then once the project is behind schedule we break the work down into disparate tasks each of which gets a single line brief from the PM (such as 'create admin' or 'do css'). These then get assigned to different devs with no consideration of their skillset. The PM is available for 10 mins every day to answer queries, the rest of the time our devs are expected to work autonomously. Meanwhile we'll tell the client that we're back on schedule and arrange a demo for an impossibly short deadline. We have the mantra ”dont worry about it” which the PM uses to quash any dev's concerns up until the day before the deadline at which point we'll swap some devs on to unrelated work whilst others concentrate on getting "just the pages the client wants to see looking right" (we have a policy of making it look like it works before it actually does.) Following the demo we will announce all the missing features we had forgotten about from the initial undocumented agreement and set the project aside whilst we service another client.2

In an IT management class, the professor wanted us to estimate the operation costs for a small IT company, breaking them down by service offered. I remember creating a markdown file, multiple times executing the line `echo $RANDOM >> estimations.md`. We rounded the numbers slightly, pimped the document a bit and submitted a nice PDF. When we had to present our work, the professor asked us how we had proceeded to calculate those results. We told him a story about an Excel file we worked on, but did not submit, because we thought he'd be interested in the end result and not care about those details. He asked us to submit that Excel calculation, because he wanted to comprehend our method. So we got together, created an Excel sheet, copied our "estimations" into column C and called it "service cost". For column B, we used the same "cost per man hour" value (scientifically estimated using the RAND() function) for every row. Finally, we divided the "service cost" by the "cost per man hour" for every row, put the result in column A and called it "effort (in man hours)". The professor, being able to "reproduce" our estimation, accepted our solution.2

No I don't want your updates every single day, Windows 10. Maybe I don't want to be so edgy with your updates. May be I like it XP style when updates didn't used to bug me with every single boot up and power down. It has become even worse. Who thought defering updates to the next boot up was a good option? It fucking interferes with the flow of work. They were like -
"You know what, let's update till 35% and then fucking update the remaining 65% at next boot"
"But users will be frustated"
"We'll show the update screen with clean font and a nice background. It will calm them down"
"Okay, so let users choose when to download the updates"
"That's not a fucking option, mate"
And if you are going to force updates down our throats please fucking mention what is being changed as a short description instead of showing a 'KBxxxxxxx' update number! If not that, at least hyperlink the thing to your update docs page! OR Mention a version buff if not it! I HATE seeing 'Update for Windows 10 Version xxxx for x64-based Systems' EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I see an update ready to be downloaded.
And no I don't play Candy Crush, or other games that are pre-installed as soon as I re-install fresh Windows or go on Xbox App. I hate to do this ritual of turning off auto download from Windows Store every time. So please don't pre-configure anything for me. Keep it fucking raw. That's why Linux distros win.
I'm just saying, Service Packs were a great thing with a need of little improvements. You guys ruined the whole experience, Microsoft.2 -
When Icriticize a paid service for taking away or not providing functionality for all users equally but then a user comes back defending them with some BS reason...
Ok... I'll just continue helping myself only...
@nnee
Me:
1. Can you put the New books tab with back in the bottom, scrolling down into the New section in the front page is annoying. At least make it a setting?
2. Where's the # of books read stat in Android?
Blinkist: Hi thanks for your message! The best way to view the newest titles on Android is to do just as you mention – scroll down to reveal the New section. As for BiB stats on Android, we're working on releasing this feature (it's only live on iOS at the moment).
Me: Hm... I liked the older way better. Faster and can tell when it was added. The problem is sometimes still new books don't refresh and I need to login out to get it to update. Also I notice sometimes the list changes randomly I think. One day a new book is there. The next day it's gone.
BiB stats have been in iOS for a year now? How hard is it to put it in Android. Personally it only took me a day to find out what my total is as I can write a program to do it so to me I don't understand how this could be taking so
Some user: Priorities and often it’s strategy for future features...
Me: you take away useful functionality and and can't release a feature that's been on the iOS version for a year already... fine,,, I'll just take it as a challenge... that I've mostly solved... for myself...

rant == false && help == true
I usually don't like posting non rant stuff here but I need help.
How do you usually design your service communication class?
I am working on a mobile app which contains talking to a REST service, I usually put all network calls in one class. Down side if it becomes a big class it becomes a pain to maintain. Any thoughts?
For a backend service I usually go with Repository design and it is working out well for me. But for mobile Apps I'd like to see if there is a better approach4 -
So I just saw a post on Facebook about a "Serverless Function as a Service on Kubernetes". Could someone give me eye bleach please?
I really can't wait after Scoped Storage and how goddamn slow it is, to have a "glorified microservice" take 5 minutes to spin up a container, just to do something silly like printing a hello world. In the post it was apparently showing a QR code.. that's it. A fucking QR code, because remember it's just a function.
A whole fucking operating system that goes up and back down, just to run a goddamn fucking function!!!8 -
GOD why am I CONTINUALLY RESUBSCRIBED to garbo random newsletters!
we need to start a new internet altogether
and I know what's happening, these idiotic "tech influencers" pay some shady service to "bOosT YoUr FoLloWiNg bY 100X!!!" and they're blatantly just breaking the law, breaking GDPR, etc. etc., its bots all the way down, cant wait for clowns with 2 braincells to use a chatGPT integration with the web, content will just get SO much better fuck7 -
Since I can't make many posts, I'll try squeeze them all in one:
1. Phone recruitment interview went "well", I even spoke french at some point! 😃
I have to brush up my knowledge again for the technical test (I hate them). Somehow I got excited, which I shouldn't, but only time will tell...
2. My brain is stuck with opening a Twitter account, mainly for following people/companies news. I don't know if it's worth it, so I would your feedback on this.
3. I've finally come down to listening to synthwave while coding and I was wondering if there's any good free service (I'm still poor, so I don't want neither Deezer nor Spotify), preferably with a UWP app on Windows 10 (that is not Soundcloud).4 -
So, I produce a monthly report for our customer service department each month, and this report includes various statistics related to our company's support performance. Two of the included statistics are the "Average Speed of Answer" (ASA for short) and the "Abandoned Call percentage" (ABD % for short) that are derived from client calls to support.
The formulae for these values are:
- ASA = time in seconds all calls that were answered spent waiting to be answered divided by the number of answered calls - displayed as hh:mm:ss
- ABD % = number of abandoned calls minus those that were abandoned in under 10 seconds (referred to as "short abandoned") divided by the sum of total calls that were offered minus the sum of short abandons & transfers
These statistics are also included in a daily version of the same report that all Customer Service leadership personnel have access to.
Now, every single fucking month the same Sr. Manager always has some kind of "discrepancy" with the monthly report that ALWAYS boils down to his dumbass trying to average shit on the daily Excel reports for that month and it being different than what the monthly report is showing. Now, these reports ONLY display the calculated value for any calculated fields mind you - not the raw values of the DB fields used in said calculations.
This month I have to tell this shit-for-brains that you can't just take an average of ASA & ABD % from the Daily's and compare them to the Monthly numbers because their calculated fucking fields!!!
Come to think of it, this has been his issue for like the past 5 months, and I seriously can't fix stupid!
Sometimes I just wanna reply to his snarky ass, corporate bullshit emails like, "BRUH!, The only motherfucking discrepancy I can locate is your IQ and your fucking title - that shit don't correlate homie! Need to take that ass back to High School statistics or something!"
But I digress...
TL;DR
I have to deal with a Sr. Manager who doesn't fucking realize you can't average a calculated field from a daily report and think it's gonna match up with the monthly report. I believe he is borderline retarded, and I often wonder how he got the "Sr." In his title let alone "Manager".
Oh wait, this is corporate America - you just gotta kiss the most ass... never mind.4 -
Fuck you Mobike!! Stop polling your applog.mobike.com server literally every 10 fucking seconds when your app is not even running! And why the fuck did it suddenly start last night, of all things? It's fucking creepy and invasive.
Related question: does anyone know how to permanently shut down a background app service on an unrooted android 7? Even if I kill the background process (not the app itself - that one has not even been opened), it still restarts a minute later3 -
In about 12 hours I have to make, which would currently be, the biggest decision of my life (so far).
Either I shut down my company. Or I closer new signups to my service until further notice.
I can't believe I'll be dropping the bomb on my partner soon.5 -
That moment when you have to file your hours worked, but the service we use to do so *exclusively* runs on *Internet Explorer* so you have to shut down your Linux distro with all the stuff you have running, boot up your Windows pro partition and log into your service, just to punch in a couple numbers.
Seriously. A website that runs *exclusively* on IE?? What the fuck.3 -
So the EU plans to make an "upload-filter"-law.
Actually this means that every service, every provider literally everyone has to check everything which is going to be uploaded on a webpage if there is an copyright violation and so on.
Thanks to my european government for slowing down the digital evolution in a absolutely shit way.2 -
Worst part of being a dev?
Explaining the issue simply enough for the business while not looking like im purposely dumbing down what i do.
"The thing failed to connect due to an issue on the service side. Think of trying to order taco bell while its closed for cleaning."1 -
So we're doing this contract work for this other company and the project is just an overcomplicated piece of garbage where they shoved every buzzword technology into it just because. I managed to get the code just about organized and functional on our side of the contract and it was looking up when suddenly the management decides "we had a rough start, lets start over, learning from our mistakes"
So I was thinking "cool, there were a lot of problems with this overcomplicated pre-optimized stack, surely we can only do better".. oh boy how naive I was. See Im not the guy in charge of the infrastructure (unfortunately) and really the project structure across this huge multi service project is a free-for-all kind of management.. so we had a call on friday where they explained how the new structure should be built... 3 new technologies, more micro services and even worse dependency tree later I was contemplating suicide on the spot.
I tried to make this shit usable and efficient and all my fucking work went down the drain in a single day of these fuckers throwing more buzzwords at the problem... I can't even get a new empty project started without browsing our huge 100+ repo project git for which dependency Im still missing to even run it...
I fucking hate this retarded piece of crap project and I hope every "manager" and "developer" with an exception of very few chokes on a cock...2 -
So I was looking into phone app development again (as you do) and I'm working on a simple QoL app for me and my SO that will help us automate some home management and finances stuff. Naturally I delved down the rabbit hole deep and wanted to have push notifications so we don't have to check the app periodically to know when certain things happen... Oh boy... Why is mobile development so convoluted, especially if you don't want to rely on Google Services...
It seems that the most accepted way of doing this is Firebase (FCM). Well me being me, I refuse to use google services for this and I prefer self hosted solutions (for data privacy reasons) which eliminates most products out there.
It also didn't help that my framework of choice is Flutter/Dart, because fuck Android Studio and the insane buggy XML stuff and fuck Android and it's constantly changing APIs...
Well In the end I decided on a rather simple solution and self hosted an AMQP service (RabbitMQ in my case, as I have some experience with it already) and implemented a foreground service in android platform specific code on top of my flutter project to kickstart it and made my phone a queue listener... This now means I can push notifications from my server to the Messaging Queue and it will be pushed into my App automatically!
One thing I found out on this journey was that Android now kills most background services and enforces foreground services to have a visible notification in the status drawer... which I actually approve of. It's a bit annoying that you can start a reliable background service, but I'm absolutely on-board with long running processes started by my apps are constantly visible...
Long story short, I love reinventing all the wheels, especially if it's for free and private... And I also went to sleep at 2AM again because this took longer that I'd like to tune... but it works, and it's google free...
I'm thinking of trying to package this up as a flutter module later, but first I want to do testing on battery life and the general life cycle of the service. RabbitMQ says they have the client library optimized for long-lasting connections and it should be just using a tcp socket, which should pretty much be what all the push notification services are doing anyway. I'm also not completely satisfied with how the permanent notification looks.. it isn't collapsible like some of the other ones from other apps and it's about 2 lines high instead of single line... which is something quite annoying and I'm struggling to find any relevant docs on how this is done other than possible making a custom Notification Style... but I just can't believe that everyone is doing that.. there must be a built-in somewhere -_-... Ugh Android is hell...
Anyway, if any android devs here have some hints, tips and tricks on how to handle this type of background/foreground process stuff and I'm doing something wrong let me know, cause googling this shit is a nightmare too!6 -
Found a nice house I want to buy. It is at the moment in foreclosure. So, we need the documents for it, to see if it worth it.
Documents are held by an agency. They want 360 € as an annual subscription service to share it with us. Sure.. No issue, let's contact the court.
Oh, the court says they cannot give us a copy, we can just look at it. After making an appointment in person and driving down there. How is the agency getting it, then? After all, the agency promises access to all foreclosure documents Germany wide. They can give me a fucking copy. Court states on its website, there won't be any answer via email. I need to call them and go down in person.
Well, this is why the game is rigged. I have nothing against a service that accumulates all these information from around the country. That's a fair business model. But then the enshittification started and everyone else gets worse service so I have little choice but to use their service.4 -
Today I had the pleasure of adding a feature to our intranet service written by two of my colleagues since they suffer from severe unix dyslexia. One of them was sick so I sat down with the other one and somehow he didn't know how to interpret the output, how to correctly call it from the terminal or even which parameters are needed for it to work so I had to try and decipher their code.
How can one work on something for a month and not know anything about it?1 -
Dear AWS, your Elasticsearch service is a bogus pile of shit-engorged horse fly larvae. Not only do you give no useful visibility into what's happening with the cluster (making diagnosis a sadistic guessing game), you lock down the fucking settings API, making it impossible to debug!! But your excellent support is on it! I wonder if I'll hear back from them this week with another inane suggestion like "increase the node count". Meanwhile the rest of my system is limping along, sometimes getting data where it's supposed to be while I keep fake-smiling and reassuring management and customers that "I'm working on it". If you're going to offer a service either make sure it works or get the fuck out of my way. I'll be moving my cluster back to EC2 and you can go do a back flip off a skyscraper. I need a drink2

I have found a DVD with a Windows XP backup file with my late mother's photos on it. However, nothing seems to open the file. I, of course, did a lot of Google searches on how to do this and what it seems to come down to is a need to run the restore on an XP, Windows 7, or Server 2008 machine. There are several legacy ntbackup restore programs out there, and Microsoft seems to still have a page for downloading that, but it relies on the long-deprecated Removable Storage Service that no longer exists on Windows 10. So, a) Microsoft are a bunch of jerks for not supporting restores of legacy backups and b) does anyone have a successful method you've used to get a BKF file to restore? All the things I've tried say the BKF file is corrupted, but how to know for sure when Removable Storage Service isn't present?1

I would like to config a service on Windows to make it rerun a .exe and I ended deleting and adding keys to the Windows registry...
Now everything is broken ans I'm here looking at my computer burning down.
If anyone ever wanted to create a session with a unique application available on it (since this session would be used in a public area) please let me know you've been at this point too, when you wanted to break a wall ! -
Name two production service, metrics and logging included, after a famous woman and an armored vehicle.
Dude, no. When those services go down in the middle of the night some poor soul on call duty will have to handle it without the faintest idea wtf is going on.1 -
Oddly enough, i have simultaneously been less busy and more productive since working 66% remotely.
I find myself with more time that feels "wasted" or not busy, but my metrics show that I have more production, better results, and far nicer documentation. A bunch of us also sat down and did a bunch of coursework on really putting together a domain script library for one click onboarding of new servers or new client setups. We spun up a bunch of new virtual environments that literally solved headaches that had existed for years that never got dealt with because of too many other tickets.
Some of our web clients freaked out at us because the business is moving away from doing maintenance of legacy web work (small to midsize businesses). But it didn't matter. Rather than respond with a "make them happy," the response was "well, we will get rid of them as clients. We need to focus our energy on the essential service sectors we support."
Hell, we even got an automated test that has been broken apparently since 2018 to work again.
Granted, the incoming workload has slowed down. But it's still interesting to me to see that despite the slowdown, there isn't any concern; its still paying the bills and we are getting rid of technical debt everywhere. Tbh, this has really been a good reality check.1 -
A very long rant.. but I'm looking to share some experiences, maybe a different perspective.. huge changes at the company.
So my company is starting our microservices journey (we have a 359 retail websites at this moment)
First question was: What to build first?
The first thing we had to do was to decide what we wanted to build as our first microservice. We went looking for a microservice that can be used read only, consumers could easily implement without overhauling production software and is isolated from other processes.
We’ve ended up with building a catalog service as our first microservice. That catalog service provides consumers of the microservice information of our catalog and its most essential information about items in the catalog.
By starting with building the catalog service the team could focus on building the microservice without any time pressure. The initial functionalities of the catalog service were being created to replace existing functionality which were working fine.
Because we choose such an isolated functionality we were able to introduce the new catalog service into production step by step. Instead of replacing the search functionality of the webshops using a big-bang approach, we choose A/B split testing to measure our changes and gradually increase the load of the microservice.
Next step: Choosing a datastore
The search engine that was in production when we started this project was making user of Solr. Due to the use of Lucene it was performing very well as a search engine, but from engineering perspective it lacked some functionalities. It came short if you wanted to run it in a cluster environment, configuring it was hard and not user friendly and last but not least, development of Solr seemed to be grinded to a halt.
Elasticsearch started entering the scene as a competitor for Solr and brought interesting features. Still using Lucene, which we were happy with, it was build with clustering in mind and being provided out of the box. Managing Elasticsearch was easy since there are REST APIs for configuration and as a fallback there are YAML configurations available.
We decided to use Elasticsearch since it provides us the strengths and capabilities of Lucene with the added joy of easy configuration, clustering and a lively community driving the project.
Even bigger challenge? Which programming language will we use
The team responsible for developing this first microservice consists out of a group web developers. So when looking for a programming language for the microservice, we went searching for a language close to their hearts and expertise. At that time a typical web developer at least had knowledge of PHP and Javascript.
What we’ve noticed during researching various languages is that almost all actions done by the catalog service will boil down to the following paradigm:
- Execute a HTTP call to fetch some JSON
- Transform JSON to a desired output
- Respond with the transformed JSON
Actions that easily can be done in a parallel and asynchronous manner and mainly consists out of transforming JSON from the source to a desired output. The programming language used for the catalog service should hold strong qualifications for those kind of actions.
Another thing to notice is that some functionalities that will be built using the catalog service will result into a high level of concurrent requests. For example the type-ahead functionality will trigger several requests to the catalog service per usage of a user.
To us, PHP and .NET at that time weren’t sufficient enough to us for building the catalog service based on the requirements we’ve set. Eventually we’ve decided to use Node.js which is better suited for the things we are looking for as described earlier. Node.js provides a non-blocking I/O model and being event driven helps us developing a high performance microservice.
The leap to start programming Node.js is relatively small since it basically is Javascript. A language that is familiar for the developers around that time. While Node.js is displaying some new concepts it is relatively easy for a developer to start using it.
The beauty of microservices and the isolation it provides, is that you can choose the best tool for that particular microservice. Not all microservices will be developed using Node.js and Elasticsearch. All kinds of combinations might arise and this is what makes the microservices architecture so flexible.
Even when Node.js or Elasticsearch turns out to be a bad choice for the catalog service it is relatively easy to switch that choice for magic ‘X’ or component ‘Z’. By focussing on creating a solid API the components that are driving that API don’t matter that much. It should do what you ask of it and when it is lacking you just replace it.
Many more headaches to come later this year ;)3 -
Two working days lost because of windows update: pc takes a lot of time to shut down .. lot of time to open .. when it opens it is very laggy because the windows update service is consuming my disk usage .. what is the hell is microsoft doing?
Is anyone else facing the same problem? Serious question here3 -
Screw AIX! More importantly screw the IBM designer that though cache batteries were a good way to monitize their platform to help validate the service contracts. I guess it "works", but at what cost?
Just lost the last 4 business days going down this rabbit hole with a customer's server.
Edit: Quick note, yes, the customer is on track for a migration soon.8 -
Question.. architecting a large system. I’ve broken it down to microservices for the DB and rest API / gateway
I want there to be some some processes that run continuously not event driven via rest. Say analytics for example what is the best way todo that? Just another service running on on a server? And said service has its own API? That when the other rest APIs are called could then hop and call the new service?
Or say we had a PDF upload via rest should that service then do the parsing before uploading to DB .. or should the rest api that does the uploading then call another rest api to another service dedicated todo the parsing and uploading to the db?
I think the bigger way to explain the question is the encapsulation between DAL.. data access layer which I have existing.. but then there’s the BLL .. buisness logic layer which I don’t know if it should have its own APIs via own microservices running in the background.10 -

## Learning k8s
Interesting. So sometimes k8s network goes down. Apparently it's a pitfall that has been logged with vendor but not yet fixed. If on either of the nodes networking service is restarted (i.e. you connect to VPN, plug in an USB wifi dongle, etc..) -- you will lose the flannel.1 interface. As a result you will NOT be able to use kube-dns (because it's unreachable) not will you access ClusterIPs on other nodes. Deleting flannel and allowing it to restart on control place brings it back to operational.
And yet another note.. If you're making a k8s cluster at home and you are planning to control it via your lappy -- DO NOT set up control plane on your lappy :) If you are away from home you'll have a hard time connecting back to your cluster.
A raspberry pi ir perfectly enough for a control place. And when you are away with your lappy, ssh'ing home and setting up a few iptables DNATs will do the trick
netikras@netikras-xps:~/skriptai/bin$ cat fw_kubeadm
#!/bin/bash
FW_LOCAL_IP=127.0.0.15
FW_PORT=6443
FW_PORT_INTERMED=16443
MASTER_IP=192.168.1.15
MASTER_USER=pi
FW_RULE="OUTPUT -d ${MASTER_IP} -p tcp -j DNAT --to-destination ${FW_LOCAL_IP}"
sudo iptables -t nat -A ${FW_RULE}
ssh home -p 4522 -l netikras -tt \
-L ${FW_LOCAL_IP}:${FW_PORT}:${FW_LOCAL_IP}:${FW_PORT_INTERMED} \
ssh ${MASTER_IP} -l ${MASTER_USER} -tt \
-L ${FW_LOCAL_IP}:${FW_PORT_INTERMED}:${FW_LOCAL_IP}:${FW_PORT} \
/bin/bash
# 'echo "Tunnel is open. Disconnect from this SSH session to close the tunnel and remove NAT rules" ; bash'
sudo iptables -t nat -D ${FW_RULE}
And ofc copy control plane's ~/.kube to your lappy :)3 -
It has to be Keybase.
It is exactly what I need - A secure yet practical cloud storage, where only you own the crypto key, with the added bonus of maintaining a blockchain-based identity online, with proof system and all.
Also has a secure PKI-Based E2E chat when I want to talk to someone about something I don't want the general government to necessarily know.
Definitely recommend the service! Even with the odd decision to include an option of a Lumen crypto wallet or whatever, you can just ignore that feature if you're not into it and it doesn't slow you down.2 -
Thanks a phooking zillion for *not* telling me in advance that the test service was taken down! *grunting* It feels like the more available means of communication, the less people actually communicate.2

Now that the whole generative AI debacle is finally dying down, I gotta ask the same question again:
WHY THE FUCK CORPORATIONS INSIST ON FALLIG FOR THE HYPE CYCLE EVERY FUCKING TIME?
I mean, I know why. It's because BigTech,Inc. always convinces companies like "Bob's tech wannabe car windows or something" to pay $$$ for this year's software fashion trends using arguments like "all the cool entrepreneurs are doing it! You don't wanna end up like those communist losers, do you?"
Then BigTech sells some shit that the muggles can't really afford (much less use), then shit hits the fan, then BigTech pretends that they never heard of it (hey, Blockchain IoT self-service BI wereable augmented reality 3D NFT eletric scooters from big data industry 4.0!) then the news cycle moves on. Rinse and repeat.
But, fuck, can't the muggles ever learn fucking ANYTHING? Tech industry is the fast fashion of industries. Do not try to imitate Facebook Google Apple Amazon, let them run their own course towards the cliff.
Instead, do your own thing.
Silicon Valley is not a good example for furniture companies to follow. So stop IKEA chatbots.5 -
So Comcast is down at my place 6 days now. No tv no reliable internet and no phone. A couple days ago the "technician" came in and could not figure it out. For two days before his arrival Comcast was calling me day and night requesting I reset the modem - they are completely opposed to sending someone out. Anyhow, technician decides that we need an external technician. He calls in and gets us the earliest appointment of next Tuesday. So all in all we will be out of service for 12 days if the technician manages to fix it. And here we are in massive city in the USA in the 21st century without internet service. Google Fiber has announced their prices in my area - adios Comcast!6

When the backend service you use religiously decides its going to shut down, and the only other real alternative for you is Firebase... But doesn't have a Xamarin/C# API... fml...3

Hello, i have this problem. Can u read the image and figure out what this corps deal is, and what to do about it. They shut down my account because i use vpn, and they wont turn it back on. I need this service to do my job. My managers are going to be mad.

Hello world. Just found out about this nice community today then saw a thread talking about how the service and apps are inactively maintained for some time lol. Let me see how far I can rant down the road.3

ELSTER, Germany's federal tax office online service seemed to be one of the few examples of successful digitization. But don't wait until the last minute for tax declarations online when everybody else has the same idea and federal ELSTER server slows down and throws a lot of exceptions turning into a federal point of failure today.1

Companies that pose to be successful and you come across awesome reviews about them, until you try their services out only to find that they have been scamming others. This is a company called Host4Geeks, I was truly impressed by the company until I dug deeper.
It saddens me that companies like these who have huge potential work on providing an awful service while they could earn a lot more if they just provide a better service.
My personal experience was a little different and partially my fault. Someone introduced me to their service and I liked their Reseller service, I tried it out for some of my clients, it was only until I decided to move on that H4G locked down my account and content barring me from attempting any sort of content transfer.
This is Host4Geeks. Beware. -
Coolest project.... SharePoint sucks, so I wrote an app to extend it into something that is useful.
The app consists of:
- a custom SharePoint event receiver to maintain a custom retention setup
- a custom feature to enable users to tag documents as related to each other
- a custom search experience with custom views and previews
- a .Net windows service to sync the data into a SQL database
- a .Net MVC application to manage the reporting and notifications system
- a notifications system in .Net
- custom SharePoint approval workflow
- a PHP site that maintains a full backup of every document in the event that SharePoint goes down
I was the only developer on the entire project and while I asked for backup they never provided it. So if anything happens to me... And since I am a good dev, my code is self documenting and someone will need to telepathically link to me to find out the multiple places that all of this is running (like five different servers including both windows and Linux).
The whole thing, I have about 18 months invested into it ;) -
Recently, Apple rolled out Push Notifications for PWA websites as a beta feature on iOS 16.4 devices. And let me tell you, it's a game-changer! But, when a client asked me to implement push notifications for their iOS users via web and service worker, I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park.
Why, you ask? Well, their backend code base was written in Plain F*cking Vanilla PHP, which felt like I had time-traveled back to the 1980s! Plus, since the ios web push feature is still in its early stages, there were hardly any resources to guide me through the process of sending push notifications to Apple WebPush API using plain php.
Despite the obstacles, I managed to successfully send notifications to Mozilla and Google Chrome users. But Safari? Not so much. The client needed the task done within 24 hours, but due to delays, it ended up taking me three days to figure out the kinks. In the end, I had to refund the client, but I'm not one to give up easily.
In fact, I've created a public GitHub repo for a Quotes App in Flutter (https://github.com/GiddyNaya/...) that can send PN to iOS users via web. I'm diving down the rabbit hole to figure out how to make it work seamlessly, and I won't stop until I've cracked the code. Wish me luck!15 -
My task for today: RDP into a vm of windows server 2008, use winSCP to ftp into the client's server, pull down approx 900 images, renaming the 200 or so duplicate filenames then upload them to a file sharing service...
THEN I have to pull them down onto my machine, optimise them, and then reverse the entire process, again manually renaming the duplicates. -
im trying to cut down on my digital ocean bill and have a few small freelance websites, im paying 15$ a month for a mysql db and kinda feel ripped off
i know mongodb atlas offers mongo for free, does any service offer mysql for free and would you recommend using it for a clients website?2 -
When I build something new for the first time.
A year ago I discovered PWA (progressive web apps), web workers and service workers, wanted to build something cool, I sat down at 10AM and started digesting every resource I could find, test, make mistakes, try again, then my eyes started to itch I looked at the clock it's already midnight ! -
My answer to their survey -->
What, if anything, do you most _dislike_ about Firebase In-App Messaging?
Come on, have you sit a normal dev, completely new to this push notification thing and ask him to make run a simple app like the flutter firebase_messaging plugin example? For sure you did not oh dear brain dead moron that found his college degree in a Linux magazine 'Ruby special edition'.
Every-f**kin thing about that Firebase is loose end. I read all Medium articles, your utterly soporific documentation that never ends, I am actually running the flutter plugin example firebase_messaging. Nothing works or is referenced correctly: nothing. You really go blind eyes in life... you guys; right? Oh, there is a flimsy workaround in the 100th post under the Github issue number 10 thousand... lets close the crash report. If I did not change 50 meaningless lines in gradle-what-not files to make your brick-of-puke to work, I did not changed a single one.
I dream of you, looking at all those nonsense config files, with cross side eyes and some small but constant sweat, sweat that stinks piss btw, leaving your eyes because you see the end, the absolute total fuckup coming. The day where all that thick stinky shit will become beyond salvation; blurred by infinite uncontrolled and skewed complexity; your creation, your pathetic brain exposed for us all.
For sure I am not the first one to complain... your whole thing, from the first to last quark that constitute it, is irrelevant; a never ending pile of non sense. Someone with all the world contained sabotage determination would not have done lower. Thank you for making me loose hours down deep your shit show. So appreciated.
The setup is: servers, your crap-as-a-service and some mobile devices. For Christ sake, sending 100 bytes as a little [ beep beep + 'hello kitty' ] is not fucking rocket science. Yet you fuckin push it to be a grinding task ... for eternity!!!
You know what, you should invent and require another, new, useless key-value called 'Registration API Key Plugin ID Service' that we have to generate and sync on two machines, everyday, using something obscure shit like a 'Gradle terminal'. Maybe also you could deprecate another key, rename another one to make things worst and I propose to choose a new hash function that we have to compile ourselves. A good candidate would be a C buggy source code from some random Github hacker... who has injected some platform dependent SIMD code (he works on PowerPC and have not test on x64); you know, the guy you admire because he is so much more lowlife that you and has all the Pokemon on his desk. Well that guy just finished a really really rapid hash function... over GPU in a server less fashion... we have an API for it. Every new user will gain 3ms for every new key. WOW, Imagine the gain over millions of users!!! Push that in the official pipe fucktard!.. What are you waiting for? Wait, no, change the whole service name and infrastructure. Move everything to CLSG (cloud lambda service ... by Google); that is it, brilliant!
And Oh, yeah, to secure the whole void, bury the doc for the new hash under 3000 words, lost between v2, v1 and some other deprecated doc that also have 3000 and are still first result on Google. Finally I think about it, let go the doc, fuck it... a tutorial, for 'weak ass' right.
One last thing, rewrite all your tech in the latest new in house language, split everything in 'femto services' => ( one assembly operation by OS process ) and finally cramp all those in containers... Agile, for sure it has to be Agile. Users will really appreciate the improvements of your mandatory service. -
An existing project I've been working on for a about a year now.
It's a music/radio service with a customizable UI, and integrates many other services into one place. I have a good portion of it completed, just don't have the time to really buckle down and complete the rest. -
!! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!
So my Xbox one broke down and I want it to be replaced, since it is out of warranty , I don’t mind paying for a replacement(I heard somewhere they have an offer where you pay a small amount for a new one)
But those fuckers aren’t human, not metaphorically, I mean literally , you can’t call/chat with a human , the only time you can contact a human is after 7:30 fucking PM.
Royal fuck in the nuts witha hammer, you’re Microsoft , not some porn company which is only in one country ,please have a “working” customer service, recommend you guys, before going to buy a Microsoft product , just try to connect to microsoft , you’ll probably end up buying something else
P.S. the image below shows how the only time I can connect to a human is after 7:30PM - 7:00 AM, and no emails too don’t work

I'm calling you out, Asus, fix your absolutely shitty piece of software or I'm never buying a motherboard from you again.
A little explanation: my PC woke up from sleep like this. On another occasion before I could take the screenshot, the CPU was sitting almost idle at 45 degrees C. The CPU fan senses that it has to spin up, but never actually does so.
I've had the opposite thing before - a case fan spinning up not wanting to spin down even if the temps are fine - which is preferable because it only causes a little bit of noise. But this here could potentially cause damage to the CPU if I put some load on it without looking at the temperature. I've partly remedied the issue by writing a batch script that kills and resets the fan control service and is triggered by Task Scheduler on resume from sleep - a thing every average Joe should do, right?
It's a shame for top-notch hardware to have to go together with such crappy piece of software. This is the X99 Sabertooth that cost me 450 EUR originally.

So Facebook is shutting down AccountKit.
I was using this service to enable signup / signin using mobile number.
Guess I'll be switching to Firebase phone authentication. -
Opinions
Hello, I’m considering building a web framework.
My ideal features would be:
Customizable authentication system(considering using a jwt lib)
Embedded DB(bolt db)
ORM( writing my own)
REST api to DB (via code generator)
Code generator(generation of models and views via cli)
GUI to db(some admin dashboard)
CORS(web service right?)
Why?
Ease of development
Fast prototyping of small-medium web services.
Fun.
My question is, do i have to many things on my platter? Should i narrow it down into less featured framework? What feature should I focus on? How should i benchmark it? Should i write tests for absolutely everything or just for exported methods? What should i take into consideration when developing ORM API, Auth API...
The language is Go
Thank you for your input10 -
Life of a web developer: Find a bug at the end of the app, fix a bug at the end of the app, time to test the bug? Sorry service is down for the rest of the day on the page right before the bug.

There is this local cloud service provider I used to like, since the promise was "it's from Africa" woi, they don't know shit. We tell then to open port 8888 ssh and 8899 since firewall is configured on their side, they close all ports then you can't ssh into the server. They take another 2 hours to fix that. Later on we change our ports and then tell them to change some ports, they open and close all ports (we discovered again because we were locked out again and had to d an nmap to see what was happening). Apparently the staff we we're talking to didn't know much about configuring servers only the senior management knew (I think to cut down costs), then we tell then to terminate services but they decide to bill us for another month (bullying) and gave us a warning letter from their lawyer for not paying for that month and since we are a small startup, we can't afford a court case which will drain us cash so we had to pay for shitty service and some month arr angry

Ranters, I need help
Does anyone know how can I run something as a systemd service and still have access to the "console" - the input and output of the program, when I need it?
(It is a minecraft forge server and there are multiple people managing the physical server and one of them managed to corrupt the map yesterday by rebooting the machine without stopping the minecraft server... so there comes the need for a service so it can shut down before the machine reboots... but I also need the access to the console of said minecraft server because sometimes when some modded items are misbehaving the rcon will stop responding while the console still works)
Edit: currently I am running the minecraft server in a detached screen (ddg "screen linux" if you don't know what I am talking about)5 -
At home. Phone and backup drives connected to the computer, nothing else (no external monitors, no mouse, no extra keyboard). I like it zen. One of the drives makes this turbine-like sound when on, which gives me the "ALL SYSTEMS GO" alert I need. Couple of albums lined up on [insert music streaming service here], boosting on the Bluetooth speakers.
I can work for 12 hours straight like that. (Twelve hours later, takes eyes off the screen, *blink blink blink*, is there any food in the house, oh, wow, my kidneys are killing me, when was the last time I took a piss?, also I should definitely take a shower, but while I'm doing that I can think about that class interfacing with that other one and making them... wait, I should write this down... sits down again)2 -
Sticking to the man... or facebook sorta.
Using Selenium so I can get all the group feeds in Chronological order rather than Recent Activity... Why the fuck is there still no way to set the default.
Now that I think about the better way is to create a Service app that checks for updates and loads them into a DB and the Client app that just reads from DB. So Updates come from Selenium/Chrome in the backgeround thread while UI doesnt need to lag/wait...
fck... all those Async code for nothing.... (yea i m thinking while i mwriting this... an epihpany moment...)
One thing and the original question is, is there an existing Facebook scraper. OpenGraph doesnt work for Group posts or public events which is what i want the feeds for....
The problem though the AJAX calls for more posts when you scroll down. I am not sure in Selenium how to make the Driver wait for new content in the DOM... rather than just sleeping the Thread for X seconds and checking after.4 -
Tech company/service you miss the most.
i.e. Stuff that got shut down, no longer alive, got taken over, or some other change.1 -
What service would you recommend for monitoring systemd services and notify me when one of them are down?6
-
I've been thinking about creating an Open Source functions-as-a-service Content Management System. Reason being is that this would allow the community to cut down on costs for content sites that they run by using something like AWS Lambda where you would only have to pay for what you use. Thoughts?1
-
Okay guys, after sleeping it over I decided that I didn't need to dump my entire stack of Java/mySQL and instead just slow the hell down on my development time. I'm going from Udemy to a book to help me be a better dev and this is a night and day difference as my book breaks every bit apart and explains it in a lot more depth than having a video walk me through it. What I wouldn't do without Amazon's Kindle service I tell ya...:)
The only major thing I'm changing in this project is committing to one Javascript tool, REACT, as I need a simple tool to ease myself into learning Javascript. Wish me luck. :P
Today I'm starting the project over, but this time breaking it down and going at better pace. Thanks for all the advice guys. :)
...I'm going to need a lot of Jack Daniels for this project aren't I?

I don't even know if the shitty rant gets through this unreliable service I pay for with my money. I want to fucking wrap my hand in that money, light it up and fucking beat your teeth out while shoving this fucking money down your greedy, second arseholes. Honestly, what am I paying you for. These last couple of days your service was less reliable than a drunkard behind the wheel trying to drive in a straight line. Exactly this fucking week where there's a fucking hackathon. This very fucking week l where I got to be the team leader, you make me look like a fucking unreliable internet twat who just talks big. This very fucking week I'm given a internet service that doesn't even let me communicate with my team mates. Why do you dare to display fucking 3g? Is the the force my fist should take? Is it the fucking amount of gallons of acid you want to be showered with? Well fucking pay that shit with the money you earned. Just let me fucking work, let me give my best, give me a fucking way to look at the docs, give me a fucking way to test my code (chat bot), give me a fucking way to tell you to go fuck yourself using your fucking antennas, maybe thst will help.
Kindly, a pissed of customer who's rage makes the heatwave look like a lesser evil.1 -
A long time ago I got an idea for an Internet concierge shopping service that would pair you up with a human to help you comparison shop anything. Obviously this was before AI or the kind of tech we’re used to now. The idea was that the help of a real live person to help you track down deals was better than some of the emerging product recommendation engines I was researching. I figured I’d at least make a short term business out of it until tech caught up. So I built the site, DB, and business logic and recruited my bargain-hunting wife to help people find good buys. It worked ok, but wasn’t easy to monetize because people wanted her help for free rather than pay any kind of fee. Their perception was they weren’t saving a substantial amount if they had to pay someone to help them. Of course, our pitch was that by paying someone to help them, they might avoid paying more by trying it on their own.
It was an interesting experiment anyways.1 -
Halp meh, plz... I have run across a problem and I have absolutely no idea how to go about solving it...
So basically I need to decrypt a TDES encrypted Azure service bus message. Can be done in a straightforward manner in .NET Framework solution with just your regular old System.Security.Cryptography namespace methods. As per MSDN docs you'd expect it to work in a .NET Core solution as well... No, no it doesn't. Getting an exception "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed". Narrowed the cause down to just something weird and undocumented happening due to Framework <> Core....
And before someone says 'just use .NET Framework then', let me clarify that it's not a possibility. While in production it could be viable, I'm not developing on a Windows machine...
How do I go about solving this issue? Any tips and pointers?10 -
Why are end users so braindead? "omg I deleted the whole db" turns out they wanted to delete one entry but pressed the wrong delete button.
Especially older people who are braindead. Same with self service systems that braindead people have problems using because they are not "user friendly" (read: n00bed down so a 1 year child can use it)7 -
TRUSTED IN REGAIN YOUR LOST CRYPT0|USDT|ETHEREUM WITH FOLKWIN EXPERT RECOVERY.
It all started with an irresistible promise: a guaranteed 110% return in just 14 days. The websites inversely com and copyread com were boasting about the incredible returns they could generate, claiming that if I invested $1,000, I would see $1,100 in return after only two weeks. As a novice investor, the idea of such rapid, high returns seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, I decided to take the plunge and invested $30,000 into each platform, hoping to cash in on these “guaranteed” profits. The first few days passed without incident, and I started to feel confident that I was on the right track. However, as the 14-day period came to a close, my excitement quickly turned into frustration. Despite logging in to check on my funds, I couldn’t access any of my money. It was like my account had disappeared. Emails to customer service went unanswered, and any attempts to withdraw my earnings were met with a series of vague error messages. What I thought was a smart investment began to feel more like a nightmare. I was left completely stuck, unable to withdraw a single penny. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I had likely fallen victim to an online scam. Desperate and unsure where to turn, I reached out to a friend I met on TikTok, who had mentioned being in a similar situation before. They recommended that I get in touch with Folkwin Expert Recovery—a service they had used to recover their own lost funds from another shady platform. Skeptical but desperate, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, the team at Folkwin Expert Recovery responded quickly and began to guide me through the process. They explained how common these types of scams were and assured me that they could help recover my money. After a financial commitment on my part, the team worked diligently to track down my lost funds. Within a few weeks, I had successfully recovered all of my $60,000.Thanks to ( FOLKWINEXPERTRECOVERY(@)TECH-CENTER. COM),Whatsapp/ +1 740-705-0711 I was not only able to get my money back but also received valuable advice on how to safely invest in cryptocurrency. They helped me understand which platforms are legitimate and how to avoid risky ventures in the future. The service they provided was truly invaluable, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their assistance. If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation caught up in a scam or unsure where to turn for help I highly recommend reaching out to Folkwin Expert Recovery the only solution, to recover lost or your stolen Crypto/Usd/Btc/Ethereum without falling victim to Scams....
Warm greetings,

BITCOIN RECOVERY EXPERT HIRE SLAYER COIN RECOVERY
As a former US Army chef, I dedicated years of service to my country, embracing the values of discipline, hard work, and the profound bonds forged through shared sacrifice. Each meal I prepared for my fellow soldiers transcended mere sustenance; it became a symbol of unity and a commitment to a greater cause. The kitchen was my battlefield, where I learned the importance of teamwork and resilience. After leaving the military, I carried these values into civilian life, determined to build a secure future for my family. My venture into cryptocurrency was a strategic move, a way to invest wisely and ensure that my children’s dreams could become a reality. However, disaster struck when I least expected it. One evening at home, after a long day, I let my guard down, feeling the weight of exhaustion. A single click on a seemingly harmless email link turned out to be a devastating phishing attack. In mere moments, scammers compromised my phone, and my Bitcoin wallet containing $200,000 of our family’s hard-earned savings vanished into thin air. The shock was paralyzing, akin to an ambush by an unseen enemy. It felt as though I had not only lost money but also the future I had worked tirelessly to protect. The weight of failure bore down on me, and I was left grappling with the question: how could I face my husband, knowing I had let our security slip away?Refusing to surrender to despair, I contacted a comrade from my military days and shared my predicament. He had faced a similar ordeal and urged me to reach out to SLAYER COIN RECOVERY. His unwavering confidence in their expertise rekindled a spark of hope within me. With nothing left to lose, I followed his advice and contacted them. To my amazement, they delivered on their promise. Their team worked tirelessly, navigating the complex digital battlefield to recover every last cent of my stolen Bitcoin. Thanks to SLAYER COIN RECOVERY, my 200,000 usd was restored. Recommending COREASSETINC RECOVERY FIRM "COREASSETINC @ gmail dot com or Telegram: @ COREASSETINC" to people for their recovery services was God led, I suffered in the hands of scammers loosing my crypto assets worth $380,000 to a binary option site online with so much debts on me. I can't thank them enough for their mind blowing recovery service in retrieving back my money from these heartless scammers, the moment I wasn't able to withdraw my funds for the first time of asking, it became clear I have been scammed off my livelihood investing in cryptocurrency. I was searching through the Internet seeking for possible solution to my predicament and I saw comments about COREASSETINC with recommendations to contact them, I wasn't sure at first but in my despair I seriously needed the help of a legitimate hacking firm to assist in my case. I had to trust the reviews and contacted them to inquire about their recovery services and what it takes to hire their services, they laid down their working terms and conditions which I accepted before they commenced with the recovery. It's a testament of their worthiness and dedication to combating fraud, I know what it means losing funds to online investment, but worry not because there's a solution with COREASSETINC.

I am so sick and tired of ChatGPT being down all the time! It's like the developers at OpenAI just don't care about the people who rely on this tool to get their work done. I mean, come on, it's not like we're asking for much here. We just need a stable, reliable language model that we can rely on to complete our tasks. But no, instead we have to deal with constant downtime, error messages, and other issues that make it impossible to get anything done.
And don't even get me started on the lack of support and communication from the OpenAI team. It's like they're completely oblivious to the fact that their product is causing major headaches for so many people. I mean, I understand that developing and maintaining a large language model is no small feat, but that's no excuse for the constant problems we're facing.
I'm honestly at my wit's end with this whole thing. It's just so frustrating and frustratingly frustrating to have something that should be so simple and straightforward be such a constant source of stress and frustration. If the OpenAI team can't get their act together and provide a reliable product, then they need to step aside and let someone who can do the job properly take over.
I just hope that they're listening and that they'll take the necessary steps to fix these issues and provide a service that we can all depend on. Because right now, it's just not cutting it.14 -

Hello Friends. Several months ago, I was lured into what seemed like a legitimate crypto investment opportunity, The platform had professional looking websites, active customer support, and what appeared to be real time profit dashboards. After a few small successful withdrawals, I became confident and invested a much larger sum over $200,000. Soon after, the platform stopped responding. My account was locked, and all communication ceased. I realized too late that I had fallen victim to a sophisticated crypto scam. Feeling helpless and devastated, I began researching recovery options and came across iCode Cyber Tech, a reputable cyber investigation and recovery service. Despite being down at first, I decided to reach out to them. What did I have to lose? From the very first contact, their team was incredibly professional and reassuring. They asked for all the details, including transaction records, wallet addresses, and communication history with the fake platform. Their team conducted a thorough blockchain analysis and began tracing the stolen assets. Their expertise, transparency, and dedication throughout the process were truly commendable. I never thought I’d see that money again, but thanks to iCode Cyber Tech, I did. Thank you, iCode Cyber Tech, for giving me a second chance.

Serving East Providence and surrounding areas, we are committed to delivering outstanding results that help enhance curb appeal, protect your investment, and improve the longevity of your property.
Exterior Cleaning: Transform the Look of Your Property
The exterior of your home or business is the first thing people see. Keeping it clean not only boosts the aesthetic appeal but also protects the structure from weather damage and deterioration. Our comprehensive exterior cleaning services cover a range of areas around your property, including the siding, windows, fences, and patios.
At Wash Pros LLC, we understand that different surfaces require different cleaning techniques. That's why we offer customized solutions, from gentle soft washing for delicate surfaces to more powerful pressure washing for tougher materials. No matter the scope or complexity of the job, we’ll leave your property looking fresh and well-maintained.
Gutter Cleaning: Protect Your Home from Water Damage
Your gutters play a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage by directing rainwater away from the roof and foundation. Over time, gutters can accumulate leaves, twigs, dirt, and debris, which can obstruct the flow of water. This buildup can lead to water overflow, which may cause significant damage to your roof, siding, and even your home’s foundation.
At Wash Pros LLC, our gutter cleaning service ensures that your gutters are clear, free of debris, and functioning properly. We use specialized tools to safely remove all debris and ensure that your gutters are flowing freely. Regular gutter cleaning helps prevent costly repairs down the line and keeps your home protected from the elements.
Solar Panel Cleaning: Maximize Your Solar Efficiency
Your solar panels are an investment in both your home’s energy efficiency and the environment. To ensure they work at their peak performance, it’s important to keep them clean and free of dirt, dust, and debris. Dirty panels can significantly reduce the amount of sunlight absorbed, ultimately decreasing their energy production.
At Wash Pros LLC, we offer professional solar panel cleaning services to help you maximize the efficiency of your solar system. Our team uses specialized cleaning techniques that are gentle on your panels but effective in removing dirt, grime, and other buildup. We ensure that your solar panels remain in excellent condition, providing you with optimal energy savings.
Driveway Cleaning: Enhance the First Impression
Your driveway is one of the most visible parts of your property, and over time, it can become stained and dirty from oil spills, tire marks, dirt, and weather exposure. Driveway cleaning is an essential service that restores the look of your driveway and boosts the overall appearance of your property.
At Wash Pros LLC, we use powerful pressure washing equipment to remove dirt, stains, and buildup from concrete, asphalt, and other driveway materials. Our experts know how to tackle tough stains while preserving the integrity of your driveway. A clean driveway not only adds curb appeal but also extends the life of the surface, helping you avoid costly repairs.

Expert Garage Door Service: Professional Garage Door Tune-Up in Scottsdale, AZ
Your garage door plays a crucial role in the safety and functionality of your home or business. It’s one of the most frequently used parts of your property, and over time, regular use can cause wear and tear on its components. To ensure that your garage door remains in top working condition, it’s essential to have it properly maintained with a garage door tune-up. At Expert Garage Door Service, we provide expert garage door tune-up services in Scottsdale, AZ, and the surrounding areas. Our goal is to keep your garage door operating smoothly, extend its lifespan, and prevent costly repairs down the road.
What Is a Garage Door Tune-Up?
A garage door tune-up is a comprehensive service that involves inspecting, cleaning, and adjusting various components of your garage door system. Regular tune-ups are essential for maintaining optimal performance and ensuring that all parts of your garage door are functioning correctly. Just like a car needs regular oil changes and maintenance, your garage door requires periodic inspections and adjustments to keep it running smoothly.
Why Is a Garage Door Tune-Up Important?
There are several key reasons why a garage door tune-up is an essential service for your home or business:
1. Prevent Unexpected Breakdowns
A garage door tune-up helps identify potential issues before they become major problems. By catching issues early, such as worn-out springs or misaligned tracks, you can avoid costly repairs or complete system failure. Regular maintenance ensures that your garage door operates smoothly and reliably for years to come.
2. Extend the Lifespan of Your Garage Door
With routine tune-ups, your garage door and its components will last longer. By keeping springs, cables, tracks, and openers in good condition, you can delay the need for replacements and save money on long-term repairs. A well-maintained garage door can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, depending on the quality of the system and how well it is cared for.
3. Enhance Safety and Security
A malfunctioning garage door can be a safety hazard. Worn-out springs or cables can lead to the door unexpectedly falling, which could cause injury or property damage. A garage door tune-up ensures that all safety features, such as auto-reverse functions and sensors, are working correctly, protecting both your family and your property.
4. Improve Performance
Regular maintenance ensures that your garage door operates efficiently. A well-tuned system runs more quietly, opens and closes more smoothly, and uses less energy. If your garage door is noisy or struggles to open, a tune-up can often resolve these issues, making your door work like new.
5. Increase Energy Efficiency
If your garage door isn’t sealed properly or its insulation is damaged, it can cause energy loss. A tune-up includes checking the seals and weather stripping around your door to ensure it’s properly insulated, helping you save on energy bills by keeping your home better protected from outdoor temperatures.
What Does a Garage Door Tune-Up Include?
At Expert Garage Door Service, we provide a thorough and detailed garage door tune-up that includes the following:
1. Visual Inspection
Our technicians will perform a complete visual inspection of your garage door system, looking for any signs of wear or damage. We check the tracks, springs, cables, rollers, and other components to identify any potential issues.
2. Lubrication of Moving Parts
We apply high-quality lubricants to the moving parts of your garage door, such as the rollers, hinges, and springs. Lubricating these components reduces friction, prevents premature wear, and ensures smoother operation.
3. Spring and Cable Tension Adjustment
Proper spring tension is essential for the safe operation of your garage door. We’ll inspect the springs and cables and make any necessary adjustments to ensure they’re properly tensioned. This helps maintain balanced operation and prevents unnecessary strain on your opener and other components.
4. Track Alignment and Adjustment
Misaligned tracks can cause your garage door to move unevenly or get stuck. We’ll inspect and adjust the tracks to ensure they’re properly aligned, which will keep your door moving smoothly without resistance.
5. Opener Adjustment
Your garage door opener is the heart of the system. During a tune-up, we’ll inspect the opener and adjust its settings to ensure it operates at peak performance. This includes checking the force settings, travel limits, and safety features.

Working as a parcel delivery driver at Amazon, I’m constantly focused on delivering packages efficiently and ensuring everything arrives on time. It’s a job that demands attention to detail, reliability, and clear communication. These are values that I hold dear, and they became especially important when I fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam. I had invested 3 BTC in what seemed like a lucrative opportunity, only to realize too late that it was a scam. The feeling of betrayal and loss was overwhelming. I didn’t know where to turn, and I feared my hard-earned Bitcoin was gone for good. I spent hours online trying to find a solution, but most recovery services seemed sketchy at best. Many promised instant results or asked for large upfront fees with little explanation. I was hesitant to trust anyone after being scammed, and I didn’t want to fall for another dubious service. Then, while scrolling through a cryptocurrency forum during one of my breaks, I came across a post from someone who had been in a similar situation. They shared how TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY had successfully helped them recover their stolen crypto. The reviewer spoke highly of their professionalism and how the service kept them informed every step of the way. What caught my attention most was that TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY was a government-approved service, which gave me confidence that they were legitimate. After reading the review, I decided to reach out and see if they could help me recover my funds. From the moment I contacted TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY, I felt reassured. Their team was professional, clear, and transparent about the entire recovery process. They explained how they would use advanced tools to trace my stolen BTC, and they gave me a realistic timeline for when I could expect updates. As someone who works in a demanding job where reliability is key, I truly appreciated their straightforward approach and the trustworthiness they exuded. There were no empty promises, just a clear and honest explanation of the steps involved. Over the following weeks, TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY worked tirelessly to track down my stolen funds. They kept me updated regularly, which I found very reassuring, given how anxious I had been about the situation. After several weeks of diligent work, I received the fantastic news that my 3 BTC had been successfully recovered. It was an incredible relief, and I couldn’t have been more grateful for their help. As someone who works at Amazon, I understand the importance of professionalism and delivering on promises. TECH CYBER FORCE RECOVERY displayed both of these qualities in abundance. If you’ve been a victim of a scam, I highly recommend their services. Their expertise, transparency, and dedication to their clients truly set them apart from the many other recovery services out there. They delivered on their promise and gave me back what I thought I had lost forever.5 -

HOW CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK FROM A CRYPTO SCAM? HIRE DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY
In late 2024, I came across Bitdollar. com and Cryptodev. com, two websites promising extraordinary returns of 220% in just 10 days. As a novice investor, the prospect of such rapid, high returns was incredibly enticing. The idea of quick wealth seemed like a golden opportunity, leading me to invest $80,000 in each platform, totaling $160,000, with high hopes for the “guaranteed” profits.
For the first few days, everything seemed promising. I logged into my accounts daily, watching the numbers grow, and my excitement built. I began imagining the possibilities—exotic vacations, new investments, a better lifestyle. But as the 10-day period neared its end, my excitement turned to frustration. When I tried to access my funds, I was locked out. My accounts seemed to have vanished. Emails to customer service went unanswered, and withdrawal attempts were met with vague error messages. What I thought was a smart investment started feeling like a nightmare. I was stranded, unable to access a single cent, and panic set in as I realized I might have been scammed. Desperate, I confided in an Instagram friend who had faced a similar situation. They recommended DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY, a service that had helped them recover funds from a shady platform. With little to lose, I contacted the team. They responded quickly, explaining how common these scams are and outlining their recovery process. After I made a financial commitment, they diligently tracked down my funds. Within weeks, DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY successfully recovered my entire $160,000. This experience was a harsh lesson in the risks of high-return investments. Now, I approach opportunities with caution, researching thoroughly before investing. I’m grateful to DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY for restoring my financial stability and teaching me the importance of due diligence.

HIRE A CRYPTO RECOVERY SERVICE — BEST BITCOIN RECOVERY SERVICE - GO TO DIGITAL TECH GUARD RECOVERY
The three ingredients of love, trust, and partnership are supposed to go into the building of a marriage. I thought my husband and I had all three: We had carved out a life together, supported each other's dreams, and even ventured into cryptocurrency investments side by side. I thought we were a team. What I didn't realize was that he was playing for the other side.
It was all because of some silly accusation. From nowhere, he got this conviction that I was having an affair. Without evidence, without rhyme or reason-just pure paranoia. I kept reassuring him, thinking that he would eventually come to his senses. Instead, he let the suspicion fester until it turned into something far uglier.
One day, I walked into an empty house. His clothes, his belongings—gone. And so was my Bitcoin wallet holding $450,000. My hands shook as I checked my accounts, praying it was a mistake. But the transaction history lied not. He had drained every last cent. The man I had trusted with my heart and my life had decided that revenge—for something I never even did—was worth more than our marriage.
I sat in stunned silence, trying to process the betrayal. My heartbreak was immediate, but as reality set in, so did the rage. I refused to let him get away with it. That's when I found Digital Tech Guard Recovery. Their team listened to my story with the kind of seriousness I desperately needed. They wasted no time tracking down the stolen funds, unraveling his clumsy attempts to launder them.
Days later, it came-the call that changed everything. The money was returned to me, every last penny of it. And as for my husband, he could have that little victory. It sure as hell wasn't going to last. I left him a message that simply said: Enjoy explaining this to the lawyers.

How do I write an essay?
If you're working within a time frame then you require tackling it in an organized way. I typically jot down quickly the central ideas I want the essay to deliver. I typically work a bit more on the introduction and the conclusion of the essay. I believe they tend to have a somewhat more lasting effect on the brain. Good use of vocabulary is icing on the cake and adding just a tad bit of your stylе can do wonders. I always choose a theme. In the first few minutes I decide whether I desire it to be monotonous or riveting or slightly sarcastic or just factual depending on the theme. The best of the essays I've come cross ways have very clear and lucid language and they now hit the nail in the head. Every writer has his own way. Try to expand one. Expressing ideas accurately is what keeps the readers absorbed. Don't miss to hit a chord with your readers. The best essay writing service [ https://buyessays.us/ ] should to clearly express the correspondence direct set up. Also, it ought to express the sufficiency of the channels as evaluate by clients.5 -
I used parse-server and services back when it was a web service at an internship, just loved the way it did things it did. Backend as a service was new to me as a mobile application developer. 5 years down the lane. My first go-to backend is Parse. I know firebase does XYZ things better. But I love the simplicity and openness of parse.
Community picked up parse as a self hosted open source service and its still going strong.
Just love the possibility of starting a mobile project and not having to worry about setting up a whole web service to cater to it. -
I have not been available on the internet for the past 7 years due to family and work reasons, coming back to the internet and experiencing a very serious investment scam is the worse occurrence of my whole existence. it all happened on a faithful Tuesday afternoon while i was smoking a cigarette & watching my dogs play around the yard.A call came in and it was a lady who claimed to know me from my former workplace, we spoke for about 5 minutes and started chatting online. She eventually introduced an investment platform to me and convinced me to invest with them, I contemplated after which i did invest. after a month it was time for withdrawal and thats where the issue started, they asked for money and they never stopped asking for more and more. Until it got to a point i had to sit back and reflect on where this all started, then i found out it was all one big scam and i was in the middle of it all. It was a devastating experience, not until i met Coin Reclaim Service through their Telgr^m: COINRECLAIMSERVICE . They took in my case and told me to chill out until they were done. It only took them 2 days and my funds were recovered and deposited back into my personal account. I want to thank Samantha of Coin Reclaim Service for really being patient with me while i was panicking over the situation, She calmed me down and assured me that my funds were going to be recovered for certain. This is their second contct below incase anyone finds themselves in such a situation. there is help out there COINRECLAIMSERVICE [AT] GMAIL . COM

On Facebook, I joined a crypto investment group called Capitalix FX. The manager annually selects the top 30 most active investors to reward with trading packages, including a multi-investor option promising 500% returns. Last year, I was selected despite being only 6 months in. Excited by the opportunity, I gathered funds and made a deposit, as per the company’s terms. A week later, the company website shut down. When I contacted the group admin, she ignored me and eventually removed me after I threatened to report her. Desperate, I sought help from a recovery company to save my family, as we had lost everything.
I discovered Asset Recover Net through a Twitter post and reached out via Email: assetrecovernet AT gmailcom. They reviewed my case, confirming that my funds were recoverable, and within 48 hours, they had anonymously retrieved my money and returned it to my wallet. I’m incredibly grateful to them and highly recommend their service to anyone who needs help. You can contact them via WhatsApp: +1 (504) 3 0 2 3 4 6 4 or Telegram: AssetRecoverNet -

Whether you're a consultant, contractor, healthcare provider, or any other type of service business, we are here to manage your financials and provide the reports you need to track your success.
Why Bookkeeping is Essential for Service Businesses
Service businesses face unique challenges when it comes to financial management. Unlike product-based businesses, service-based companies may deal with fluctuating revenues, project-based billing, and different client payment schedules. Keeping track of income and expenses accurately is vital to ensure profitability, tax compliance, and financial growth.
Bookkeeping for service businesses is essential for the following reasons:
Accurate Financial Tracking
Service businesses often operate on contracts or agreements with varying payment schedules. Proper bookkeeping ensures that all client invoices, payments, and expenses are accurately recorded, giving you a true picture of your business’s financial health.
Expense Management
Service businesses may incur expenses related to travel, supplies, marketing, and more. By tracking these expenses properly, we help ensure that your books remain organized and you can easily identify opportunities to cut costs or increase profits.
Tax Compliance
Bookkeeping is essential to staying compliant with tax regulations. We ensure that your financial records are accurate and complete so that you can file your taxes without any issues. This helps you avoid penalties and take advantage of all potential tax deductions.
Cash Flow Management
For service businesses, cash flow can fluctuate depending on the nature of contracts and billing cycles. We help you keep track of incoming payments and outgoing expenses, ensuring that you have enough working capital to operate smoothly.
How We Provide Comprehensive Bookkeeping Financial Reports
At Lighthouse Bookkeeping LLC, we understand that financial reports are the backbone of decision-making. Our bookkeeping financial reports provide a detailed view of your business’s financial performance, allowing you to assess profitability, track your financial goals, and make strategic business decisions.
Our bookkeeping financial reports include:
Profit and Loss (P&L) Statements
The P&L statement shows your business’s income and expenses over a specific period. It helps you understand your revenue, cost of goods sold, and operating expenses, giving you insights into whether your business is profitable.
Balance Sheet
The balance sheet provides a snapshot of your business’s financial position at a given point in time, listing your assets, liabilities, and equity. It helps you assess your business’s financial stability and ability to cover its debts.
Cash Flow Statement
The cash flow statement tracks the flow of cash in and out of your business. This report provides essential information for managing cash flow, helping you ensure that you have sufficient cash to cover day-to-day expenses.
Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Reports
These reports track outstanding payments from clients (accounts receivable) and amounts you owe to vendors (accounts payable). They are essential for maintaining healthy cash flow and ensuring you are on top of any outstanding financial obligations.
Job or Project-Based Reports
For service businesses that work on projects or contracts, we provide detailed reports that break down income and expenses related to specific jobs, helping you assess the profitability of individual projects or clients.
The Importance of Bookkeeping Monthly Reports
In addition to providing periodic financial statements, bookkeeping monthly reports offer a snapshot of your business’s financial status on a month-to-month basis. These reports allow business owners to track performance, analyze trends, and make timely adjustments to their strategies.
Here’s why bookkeeping monthly reports are critical for service businesses:7 -
