You can't even make this shit up.
The British NCSC is stopping with the terms "blacklist" and "whitelist" because it would be racist...
Fucking oversensitive cocksuckers.24 -
terms can only be use in programming: -
Where friends have access to your private parts,
Where Parents may kill their child if required,
Where Bugs come in from open windows,
Where one image is worth 128K words,
Where 10 == 2,
Where Zombies are common and not dangerous *,
Where Daemons are always there somewhere
Where the slimmest of USB drives are considered FAT *,
Where comments are made and arguments are passed, **
Where forever alone nerds can also unzip, touch, mount and fsck ***,
Where root is top of the tree,
Where x = x + y is totally correct,
Where opening a jar requires Java,
Where Oct 31 = Dec 25,
Thanks to ASHISH KEDIA for writing these.

When I said make that text italic, I didn’t mean to make it green, white, and red. That’s Italian.2

Ah yes, progress...
Why do SJWs have to infiltrate everything and project their own racist views of the world onto non-problematic terms?
Slavery has existed for as long as humanity and abolishing the terms will definitely not solve slavery and opression.
I am not against Git changing the default name but I am against them doing it in the name of "inclusivity". The technical world exists by merit and not inclusivity. Why make everything about color, race or slavery level?86 -
Today I was 25 years old, asking for a raise or a opportunity to reach the next level of my career.
My department manager simply said:
"I'm sorry, but in terms of salary you have already reached the end of your career."
Bye then :)34 -
I know pretty much everyone here understands the importance of net neutrality, but here’s a nice chart you can share with all your non tech friends explaining the importance of it in terms they understand24

All Terms of Services agreement changes, etc. need to be in GitHub. I don't want to reread the whole thing, where's the diff?4
-
It's funny how every one says Google respects your privacy.
I remember a few months ago, one of my manuscripts was removed by Google because it "violated the terms and services."
First of all, it's just a psychological crime thriller about murder. I read the terms and services and it said nothing about murder, so I didn't violate anything.
Second of all, assuming they removed it for the reason it was all bloody and about murder, how would they know that? Did they start snooping and read my manuscript?
Fortunately, it was recovered the next day, but if Google cares so much about your privacy, why would they read my document?28 -
Linux you are just the perfect OS in all terms but please do something for gamers. I cant keep on switching laptops for work and playing dota. Hell even the keyboard layout is like way different in both.21

Overheard some guy talking about robotics on the phone, turns out it was all about MS excel macros.
people need to stop abusing terms like big data, AI etc. to make them sound 'smart' 🙄4 -

When there are no widely approved Swedish translations of big data terminology, such as "big data" itself. When discussing this kind of terms you have to resort to using the English words for them, which results in a horrible language mix, Swenglish.39

Let me explain a tiny corner of some awful code I read earlier today, in layman’s terms.
It’s a method to see if the user is in a secure session — not to set up the session, just to see if it exists. The method ends with a question mark, so it’s basically a question. It should look up the info (without changing anything) and should always give a clear yes/no answer. Makes sense, right?
Let’s say the question is “am I in school right now?”
The code… well.
If there isn’t a student, the answer it gives is null, not yes or no. Null is a fancy word for no, pretty much, so that’s kinda fine, but it really should be a simple no.
It then checks to see if the school is open today. If it is open, it then checks to see if I made my lunch, if I took my backpack, and if I rode the bus — and makes these things happen if they didn’t. Forgot my backpack? Just ask “am I in school today?” And poof! There’s my backpack! … but only if the school is open.
It then, finally, checks to see if I’m actually in the school, and gives that answer.
It could just see if I’m in the school — I mean, I could be in school without a backpack, or walked there on the weekend, right? Ha! You and your silly logic have no place here.
So, by asking if the user is in a secure session, we change the answer: they weren’t before, but the act of asking makes it so. This isn’t profound or anything: I don’t work with Schrödinger. My coworkers are just idiots.
And no, the rest of the code isn’t any better…7 -
Received a call from client complaining about stupidity of google analytics. He could not get pass Terms and Conditions page. Saying "I agree" button is faded away and can not be clicked.
He just needed to scroll the page down.
What happened to people nowdays?2 -
My boss...
With `Back-End` he understands `the Dashboard`. The system that is used only from company's employees.
`Front-End`, the software that is used by our customers.
I have explained him many times that he was wrong, but he seems to use this term. And now I have to use these terms like him.9 -
Remember the discussion of banning terms like "blacklist" or "blackhat" because some people started to associate the color black with racism for some reason? Well, today my company started to ban those terms.
The loud minority wins again.9 -
Devs in our country are people who will allways have a job. Because companies here need us more than we need them. That's why we have 2x(jr-mid), 3x, 4x (mid), 5x+ (sr) average earnings country-wide.
Job is good, perks are nice, hardware is awesome (idk when was the last time I worked with anything weaker than i7), internet is brilliant (one of the best in the world; I think we have recently lost the "best internet in the world" title recently to some other country). Companies are fighting over us, offering better salaries, better terms. I was even bold enough to list my terms in LinkedIn's summary section and still I am getting offers :D
Devs' life is awesome here :)8 -
With the recent mark zuckerberg hearing, a ton of websites have actually changed their privacy policies and terms of service, to be much more transparent, so it did have a good impact, but the thought that it took that, to implement those changes is infuriating4

This awesome experience from Apple highly encouraged me to read their 80,000,000 word terms and conditions.

Progress has been made
Full control from a webserver!
Very precarious though - motors are held in place by blue tack, but occasionally they break free and hit all the circuitry out of the way
Any thoughts on a better way of controlling it? (In terms of UI/UX)4 -
Photographer gave me a bigger discount (per his boss' orders) because I showed him free/inexpensive certificate options.
Thanks to all on here who have mentioned that; wouldn't have remembered about free options without others who think in terms of security. -

I fucking hate non-technical founders looking down on the tech team as if it we're dispensable, and as a result, undervalue us in terms of money and equity.8
-
I just thougt what could we do so the people start reading the terms and conditions. Finaly I have the solution we have to ask questions about the terms they just read. 😂3
-
I hate such sites. Such developers will be condemned to live with a 128Kbps dial-up connection forever. Assholes.12
-
It really grinds my gears if colleagues from non-technical departments attempt to use technical terms but use them wrong. It might be gatekeeping but please, use a technical term if you are confident you are using it correctly. Otherwise use layman's words. Using technical terms incorrectly sends our brains down the wrong road and we have to make a mental U turn. And you sound like a masterhacker from a TV show or movie.7

New project, sent a 7 page contract to the client. First day of work and client begins to ask things outside scope and terms.
I explained what is written in contract and he interrupted me saying "I READ THE CONTRACT".
One minute later, he starts asking the same things again.1 -
Anyone else got some funny terms in their office like:
Rocketsurgeolist: Guy that knows everything about everything but hardly manages to pull anything off.
Maffamagician: A person that battles with math and spreadsheets
Marketard: Marketer3 -
I've spent so much time writing terms and conditions, I'm tempted to list it as a feature of my app2

PayPal sucks. They canceled our ability to take ecommerce payments just because. No reason given. We had not violated any terms of service. Our customers are happy with our products. And we were making them lots of money. They just up and pulled the plug because they’re PayPal and screw anyone who asks why. Idiots.3
-
Our marketing just change the blacklist/whitelist terms to blocklist/allowlist to make it more "neutral" following change in github "master branch" to "main branch"
When will this end, people ?

So those of you who have seen some of my previous rants will know that the past 2 years, I've been "employementally" challenged. I am now very happy to report that I've gotten a contract renewal at my current job. The terms are exactly the same but 3 extra days of anual leave and a 7% raise!1

I think the reason I hate the terms "programming" and "program" (the verb) is because it's so commonly misused. Also I found people to less think of me as an hacker when saying that I am a coder rather than "I am a programmer".5

This popped up on Best Buy while I was looking around for ideas for my next chair. Somehow I don't think they are on speaking terms with their daughter anymore 🤣1

Master/Slave terms we're just removed from python. Why? Who needed / requested this? Do people not understand these terms to such a degree that they actually offend people?7

Why do some developers write the official documentation with low interpretability and a high number of technical terms? It does not look cool if it does not serve the purpose it was made for - Helping us understand your software!!!

Just heard this on the news...
"The cyber security on my smart phone compared to the cyber security in medical equipment..."
Wtf did I just hear??? I mean, I get it...using terms the general public understands... But how about educating people instead. 😤1 -
Legitimate question, no argument intended: why do you use mac? What advantages does it have over the other operating systems in terms of coding?8

I've seen a lot of hate to Macbooks and Apple products in general, and although I agree that iphone could be dramatically improved in terms of hardware I think that OSX is the best platform to do Web development.
Which one would you pick and why? Windows, OSX or Linux.27 -

So I did make a few website, they kinda worked well, but they really were ugly as fuck in terms of UI and UX.

By far the biggest challenge is naming your classes and variables in your native language instead of using english. And obviously you end up with a hidious mix of english and native terms 😂2

Unlimited power to do anything with any electronic devices.

While parsing nodes in a graph.
In terms of readability and variable naming, how wrong (if at all) is to use:
1. broNode (for sibling nodes)
2. papaNode / mamaNode (for parent nodes)
3. babyNode (for child nodes)
I sincerely don't know how to review this PR7 -

The last one requires you to accept new Terms of Service.
So just don't accept the : no updates EVER.3 -
After 3.5 terms, I still see people running Linux in a vm && writing C code in nano.
Should I be concerned if that really freaks me out?
Usually I'd say use whatever floats your boat but I just don't get why they don't dual boot, they'll need Linux in pretty much every term...16 -
Company i work for just posted updated pay rates.
It's good. They went from lower end of spectrum to a little above the average in terms of pay, and benefits stay the same - solid. -
Full stack isn’t about knowing just a backend and little bit of JavaScript. Turns out a bunch of them who applied this week seem it have derived a new meaning for it!
Throwing around terms like “I am exploring MEAN” doesn’t make you sound cool unless you have some working examples that you have built with it.7 -
Google has flagged a document in my drive, saying that it is violating its terms of service.
The document is just a digital logic and computer design book.

I've been watching some documentaries about the Tech industry lately and after just finishing "Terms and Conditions May Apply" I feel deeply disturbed by the simply massive scale of surveillance that is deployed by the tech giants. I don't think this is something that we should all just let slide.6

I really don't get why creators of already-suspicious looking software (and the related suspicious looking website) put terms like "NO VIRUS" or "100% free of malware" next to the download area.
I mean, why would that help anything?
(I understand those typical virustotal scan widgets though, those are fine)1 -
So what's up with HR people pushing people to stop using terms like master/slave and blacklist/whitelist because it's offensive to people? I mean this is simply censorship out of context. It's not blatantly hating on someone.
Did they did even ask concerned people their opinion? Is this really gonna help professional inclusion? Censoring terms will not solve issues if you cannot talk about it in an honest manner.
Fuck sake some HR people are paid for doing bullshit.7 -
Is the CS field creating terms for the sake of creating terms?
Someone mentioned a "closure" in another post. I instinctively knew what they meant by that based upon the code I saw. I had heard the term thrown around before, but it had not yet connected in my mind. I wondered why I had not been exposed enough to care.
So I thought: What does C++ have as far as closures?
I found that C++ has lambdas. Those are definitions for function objects. They do not exist at runtime. But a closure does. The analog is you have classes. They are definitions and do not exist at runtime. But instances of classes do. So at runtime the instance is what you are working with. This is the same as lambdas vs closures in C++. The closure is the runtime counterpart. Why a separate term for what essentially is an instance? Is it because it captures data and code? As far as I know the closure is all data that gets passed around that calls a function. So it is essentially an instance of a lambda.
Another term: memoization. I have yet to see this added to any dictionary in online tools like a browser. Is the term so specific that nobody cares to add it? I mean these are tools programmers use all the time.
My guess is these terms originated a long time ago and I have just not been exposed to the contexts for these terms enough. It just seems like I feel like I have been in the field a long time. But a lot of terms seem alien to me. I also have never seen these terms used at work. Many of the devs I work with actively avoid CS specific terms to not confuse our electrical coworkers. My background started in electrical. So maybe I just didn't do enough CS in college.6 -
So I've just seen a post on Facebook looking for a website designer. Which need to use Vue.js and Laravel.
So what your looking for is a website developer and not a designer.
Why do agencies and employers/clients using the terms "website designer" for development now as well. Design and development are separate.8 -

If we don't count gaming there are 2 different categories of laptops; consumer and business.
Business laptops are better quality and more durable than consumer laptops. That's just a fact. Therefore the extra cost.
Now my question: Does Microsoft 'favor' business laptops in terms of Windows 10 and Windows 10 updates?
Because I have a business model laptop and since the beginning Windows 10 worked flawless and still does and I never had any problems despite running mutiple programs and services.
While some of my friends have consumer laptops and they are complaning day in day out about their Windows is always updating and programs always crashing.
So does Microsoft 'favor' business models in terms of Windows 10 updates and stability or am I just lucky?3 -

So.. wondering what people's thoughts are on this.
So I started working for a company late last year, so far I've done four projects (one was a test), the contract and hourly rate was sorted out and all happy. However, in the three months I've worked there the terms of payment has been changed two times (both times within 30 days).
First (originally) was being paid for x amount of hours any hours over that moves on to an hourly rate.
Second change moved over to a fixed rate per month.
And currently I'm now just on an hourly rate.
The justification for the change in terms was "the current terms isn't working out for us" - as far as I'm aware no-one elses terms have changed. However the quickness of the term changes here do concern me.
Now I do have some personal issues (disability for one) as well as other issues so I don't do things faster than other other devs, however, I get the job done and I stick to deadlines (and yes the company is aware of my personal issues).
In terms of current projects I'm only doing tweaks to current projects so my hours at the moment per week are slow (I have been asked about new projects) but I've heard nothing whatsoever on start dates etc.
Just an FYI the current work done, I've had no issues whatsoever.
So I would like some thoughts on what you'll do if you were in this situation as personally I can think of two reasons but I would rather see what other people think here.6 -
I have to implement DSP using Convolution, FFT. And for the past 2 days I have like a million tabs open in Chrome and half of the titles end with ".... for dummies" :D
At least I'm learning something new and when I understand what the math behind those terms does I feel awesome :D -
The best thing I made the last year was finally breaking away from my “framework addition”, the belief which compulsively learn anything new and cutting edge and making my curriculum a three page bullet point will eventually pay off in career terms. Now I’m focusing on fundamentals and I’ll learn shiny frameworks or DevOps tech only when needed.2

Wondering: What does define a BIG project for you?

Honestly, I've never even given a second thought to the use of the terms "whitelist", "blacklist" or "master". I mean, I'm not against this change in any way, but I'm also not sure if these terms are commonplace because they stem from racially charged meaning or not. Guess my privileged ass has never given it much thought.

Have a look at the attched image first and spot something fishy.
**(Spoilers)**
To make sure the user does not read the terms and conditions, I found two dirty tactics used by companies.(Specially on this one)
1. Use of **complex** legal words, to make it incomprehensible to the reader/user.
2. This one is special- They repeated the same words without changing para multiple times, to make it look like a big set of terms and conditions. Yes in the 11th line after [Jurisdiction]. The para is repeated, again multiple times.
Instead of focusing on spending thousands of dollars on making websites look more presentable, if the company really wants to stand out, they shall improve the way their terms and conditions page looks like. Atleast they can ditch the para system, use some less technically jarring words, and be concise and don't repeat the same things again. -
>the human mind cannot process non-Euclidean laws of physics and space
Yes it can. Non-Euclidean terms don't phase me. I've played too many games like Antichamber, removing laws of physics/the universe doesn't phase me.

All the abbreviations. People from Head quarters specifically, they start talking in lingo, in a global conference call, terms & language which is strictly internal to the group, and that too in abbreviated form. Some day i am going to get berserk on these folks. Fun starts when two different groups have same abbreviation for different things.

Ya'll on Signal yet? Now that they are on the rise, they'll need funds and a revenue model. You can't depend on donations unless you're Wikimedia.
