When I just started web development, this stuff was so fucking easy! Why did it become so motherfucking complicated to include simple shit like this?!
All I want is to start programing this motherfucker, not spend 3 hours on compiling CSS and whatnot (because I'd have to learn this bullshit first).

Internal mail form CIO's office:
"Thank you for being part of the internal trial for NPMe, we have decided to remove this tool in favour of Artifactory because of its support for multiple platforms and tools. We are sorry for the inconvenience, here is a link to migration scripts ..."
Migration "script" readme, please clone this repo, create file A, and B, and install these 2 dependencies.
Dependency 1:
- "install via homebrew ..."
- .... homebrew needs to update, checking for updates
- 10 mins later = Update failed, please upgrade to Ruby version 2.3
- Installs ruby version manager
- GPG signature verification failed
- Install GPG v2 + accept keys
- Install ruby version manager
- "please execute this command before running rvm"
- execute command
- "rvm install ruby-2.3"
- Install failed, please see log file
- Opens log file
- "Xcode on its own is not sufficient, please install xcode cli tools"
- Install xcode tools
- 5 minutes later -> "rvm install ruby-2.3"
- 10 minutes later "brew install jq"
Ok back to read me, "login to Artifactory, go here and copy paste XXX."
- Login to Artifactory
- Eventually find repo
- Login again to actually see credentials for some reason
- Screen doesn't match instructions in readme
- Click around
- Back to readme
- Back to artifactory
- Login again
- Execute command auth / setup command
- Copy contents to npmrc file .... now all my scoped packages are going to point to 1 specific repo
Fuck the migration, Fuck these shitty instructions, i'll set them all up again manually. See tags below for further opinions on this matter.undefined fuck ruby fuck homebrew fuck this fuck shitty cli fuck artifactory fuck cli fuck jq fuck rvm2 -

Finally made my node production server stable enough that I could focus on writing tests*. I start by setting up docker, mocking cognito, preparing the database and everything. Reading up on Node test suites and following a short tut to set up my first unit test. Didn't go smoothly, but it's local and there are no deadlines so who cares. 4 days later, first assert.equal(1+1, 2) passes and I'm happy.
I start writing all sorts of tests, installing everything required into "devDependancies," and getting the joy of having some tests pass on first try with all asserts set up, feels good!
I decide to make a small update to production, so I add a test, run and see it fail, implement the feature, re-run and, it passes!
I push the feature to develop, test it, and it works as intended. Merge that to master and subsequently to one of my ec2 production servers**, and lo and behold, production server is on a bootloop claiming it "Cannot find module `graphql`". But how? I didn't change any production dependencies, and my package lock json is committed so wth?
I google the issue, but can't find anything relevant. The only thing that I could guess was that some dependencies (including graphql) were referenced*** in both, prod and dev, and were omitted when installed on a prod NODE_ENV, but googling that specific issue yielded no results, and I would have thought npm would be clever enough to see that and would always install those dependencies (spoiler: it didn't for me).
With reduced production capacity (having one server down) I decided to npm uninstall all dev dependencies anyway and see what happens. Aaaaand it works.....
So now I have a working production server, but broken local tests, and I'm not sure why npm is behaving like this...
* Yes I see the irony.
** No staging because $$$, also this is a personal project.
*** I am not directly referencing the same thing twice, it's probably a subdependency somewhere.2 -

I've been wondering about renting a new VPS to get all my websites sorted out again. I am tired of shared hosting and I am able to manage it as I've been in the past.
With so many great people here, I was trying to put together some of the best practices and resources on how to handle the setup and configuration of a new machine, and I hope this post may help someone while trying to gather the best know-how in the comments. Don't be scared by the lengthy post, please.
The following tips are mainly from @Condor, @Noob, @Linuxxx and some other were gathered in the webz. Thanks for @Linux for recommending me Vultr VPS. I would appreciate further feedback from the community on how to improve this and/or change anything that may seem incorrect or should be done in better way.
1. Clean install CentOS 7 or Ubuntu (I am used to both, do you recommend more? Why?)
2. Install existing updates
3. Disable root login
4. Disable password for ssh
5. RSA key login with strong passwords/passphrases
6. Set correct locale and correct timezone (if different from default)
7. Close all ports
8. Disable and delete unneeded services
9. Install CSF
10. Install knockd (is it worth it at all? Isn't it security through obscurity?)
11. Install Fail2Ban (worth to install side by side with CSF? If not, why?)
12. Install ufw firewall (or keep with CSF/Fail2Ban? Why?)
13. Install rkhunter
14. Install anti-rootkit software (side by side with rkhunter?) (SELinux or AppArmor? Why?)
15. Enable Nginx/CSF rate limiting against SYN attacks
16. For a server to be public, is an IDS / IPS recommended? If so, which and why?
17. Log Injection Attacks in Application Layer - I should keep an eye on them. Is there any tool to help scanning?
If I want to have a server that serves multiple websites, would you add/change anything to the following?
18. Install Docker and manage separate instances with a Dockerfile powered base image with the following? Or should I keep all the servers in one main installation?
19. Install Nginx
20. Install PHP-FPM
21. Install PHP7
22. Install Memcached
23. Install MariaDB
24. Install phpMyAdmin (On specific port? Any recommendations here?)
I am sorry if this is somewhat lengthy, but I hope it may get better and be a good starting guide for a new server setup (eventually become a repo). Feel free to contribute in the comments.24 -

Working at a client and I don't have permission to freely install software on my own machine. Takes a whole day just to install anything. Ffs1

Just wanted to make a clean install on my iMac. What could possibly go wrong?!
Cleaning the hard disk was interrupted by a process running (kextcache). Catalina wouldn't install ("Incomplete systen on target device". Dropping the terminal I could somehow force unmounting and wipe the disk. Had a BSOD in between. Catalina would still not install ("Failed to install pre boot volume"). Later erasing the disk got blocked by the kernel itself. Felt like trouble and it was: Next time I was greeted with a blinking folder containing a questionmark instead of the bitten Apple.
Last resort: Internet recovery. Installing El Capitan was said to take 7 hours so I took a USB time machine backup of latest Catalina. Installed it, but on reboot it get's stuck when progress bar is at 100%. But at least I've a working recovery again. Yeah, progress!5 -

I've finally setup a dedicated Docker box with RancherOS and Rancher... Shipyard looked nice as well (the simplicity like beautiful) but the cloud management with Rancher is amazing!
It took me minutes to install the OS, minutes to install Rancher, then on my phone it took minutes to install Jenkins with swarm support!
I'm loving this! -
I'm pissed
Why the fuck do I need to install brew to have AWS' SAM CLI? Couldn't you provide me with an install script or an apt package? Now I have to install linuxbrew (never used it) and pollute my os with crap I'll never use just to have this fucking cli so I can create a fucking lambda function project on intellij idea.
Oh, I can install it with pip. Well yes but actually no. They fucking deprecated the pip package and just gave me a link with instructions on how to install it with brew.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I was praising AWS for their good docs yesterday, now I'm pissed at those lazy fucks >:(11 -
When you import a project into a fresh install of Android Studio and the bitch has a gazillion things to install.
You might as well take a good nap if you've got shit internet 😒 -
Clean install of Ubuntu 18.04 on my work desktop, rbenv won't install a ruby version saying i need to install libssl-dev (that i've installed, ofc) and the mysql install did not prompt me for the root password, so i can't login on it.
Yay3 -
Fucking Matlab ><'
I can't get the fucking thing running on my Linux install. Took me 3hrs to install it, and now the fucking fonts won't show
i3 and Matlab do NOT go well together... -
had a blast helping a pal install arch (and setting up the necessities, like i3-gaps, neofetch, wal, etc...). tonight was awesome.
PS: i can recite any basic arch install by memory now, EFI or BIOS, and i'm slightly better at navigating vim now5 -

Yarn install. It’s simple enough and I understand why it’s used but it’s just annoying having to install 150MB of stuff to be able to produce a 200KB output is file. There must be a better way?1

We are not allowed to install anything on our school PC's, not even fonts. I need suggestions for some nice MS office fonts.1

Trying to install Manjaro for the first time. Keeps failing to install GRUB and giving a blank error message.
Been at it for 6 hours in a row already.
And they say Arch is the best...
Edit: I've even tried manually installing GRUB from the live boot usb, but that fails in a similar fashion :/4 -
There was a time where Nvidia drivers took few minutes to install. Looks like I missed that time, eh?
Have been waiting here for at least 30 minutes and it is still "Preparing to install". Thanks Nvidia. -
I have Ubuntu 16.10 installed on my laptop...guess how painful is it to install new packages :/ I should really add reinstall to newer version to my to-do list.4

4th day at work, I configured some of my enterprise software until it broke the install entirely. 5th day: fresh install and config of all the shit I did for the last 4 days. GOD DAMMIT.

Here's a fucking brilliant idea:
apt-get install nodejs should download and install node latest version. This would be instead of having 18 fucking tabs open and reading through masses of stackoverflow answers for 18 months and typing thousands of instructions in the terminal and learning to fucking HATE node to install the latest version of node. Radical, I know.15 -
OK Guys I need your advice. I got an (I think it's about 8 years old) Aspire from Acer. Windows 10 is installed after upgrading from Windows 7, which was the worst decision because now it runs at speeds below good. I want to clean install a new OS. But which route to take?
Windows or Linux?
What distribution? I have my knowledge in Debian. Or could I go with RemixOS because it's most user-friendly and best for work abroad? But is there an IDE for Android based distributions?
You see what my dilemma is don't you? ^^
May some of you could help me
Specs: 4GB of DDR3, 500GB HDD, a shitty battery and an AMD Dual core with something about 2.5GHz11 -
Angular cli was installed globally with some "more up-to-date" version and locally for a project with a slightly older version. On a local machine. No problem.
The same thing on a VM: nope, module not found error. node trying to run a node_modules install script from within windows directory, in which nothing node-related exists ... ?? -
FFS. Why can't I install anything the simple way ? Every time I want to install something, I've got unknown weird errors. This shit just make me want to quit1

perl -MCPAN -e 'shell;'
install DateTime
Proceeds to install a shit ton of dependencies, takes two hours to install.
WHY? Does math functions related to date/times require all those deps?4 -
My university's IT department can't even install debuggers on the computers, so if we're on linux and need to debug something, we need to save the code to an usb stick, reboot to windows, boot a VM and install valgrind there (or manually install the needed .deb files, which ends up being even more of a hassle than just rebooting)1
-
